Editorial If you are reading

this, then obviously the world didn’t end today! Big Surprise. How many times have we heard the trumpets of doom sounding that “The End Is Nigh?” So if you don’t buy presents or send cards solely because no-one was going to be around to open them, tough, think you might have missed the boat a bit, although you still have three more shopping days left! One of the perks I get being an

Tenerife Weekly - 21st December - 27th December 2012 editor is that I meet some very interesting people, this week I had a wonderful meeting with a cute, cuddly little bear. His name is Teide Bear, he lives right here in Tenerife and is a superhero that encourages people to reuse, recycle and rescue as well as be nice to each other. I have printed the first chapter of his book on page 8, so sit down with your kids and chill out for a little bit and read all about Teide Bear and his adventures! Christmas is nearly upon us,

3

the kids have all broken up from school, mums are completely frazzled and dads are probably all hiding in the nearest bar. As for me and mine, we got off really lightly this year… we get to spend our time at Vivo playing Santa to all our guests. And I don’t have to do the washing up!! Yay!! Wishing you all a really Merry Christmas and a very, very happy 2013.

Tenerife trip will forge stronger Hull KR for the Super League battles ahead

HULL KR winger Craig Hall believes the bonds being forged on their warmweather training camp will serve them well in this season’s on-field battles. Currently out training in Tenerife with the rest of his Robins team-mates, Hall is one of the more senior figures in the squad With double training sessions and temperatures of 25 degrees to contend with, Hall admits the camp has gone exactly to plan. And he hopes the off-field relationships being built up can serve his side well when the opening round arrives in two months. “The team spirit is very good and the new blokes all feel at home,” he told the Mail. “Because we are together all week with each other, it helps with the team bonding. When we train at home, we all go our separate ways at the end of the day and we don’t get as good a chance to bond with each other, not just the new players but with the rest of the squad. “We have a little coffee club going at dinner time and it’s

good to bond with people like Greg Eden and Travis Burns. “We have been down to the beach banana boating and things like that. That has been a great way to bring the new players closer.” It’s the second successive year Craig Sandercock has swapped the cold of Hull for the sunshine of Tenerife before Christmas. With plenty of drills and programmes to keep the players occupied, Rovers’ focus is already on preparing for the new Super League season and the arrival of Catalan Dragons at MS3 Craven

Park on February 3. “Training in the sun has been perfect for us and lets us train well with the ball,” added Hall. “It is the most important week of pre-season with the skill work we are doing. It’s been going very well. “The facilities where we train are great. The pitch is superb and is prepared after every training session we have. “We have a number of swimming pools to recover in afterwards at the hotel which is ideal for us.” Whilst Hall has helped make the

new recruits welcome, as a new father, Hall is finding this week’s camp tougher than some of his team-mates. He admits it has been hard leaving his new-born daughter Layla and fiancé Kayleigh for a full week, but is trying to stay in touch whenever he has a break. “I’ve been on Skype to speak to Kayleigh whenever I can, but Layla is missing me,” he added. “It has been very hard being away from them both. “I didn’t think I would miss them as much as I do but I’ll soon be back home with them.”

walK for life

A boat crash off the beach of Los Gigantes on the west coast of the Island of Tenerife left a Belgian national, a resident on the island, dead and up to three others injured. The boat had left Puerto Colon harbour in Playa de Las Americas and was travelling past the Los Gigantes coastline when the accident happened on Saturday. Reports state that a recreational boat crashed into a rock and then sank. The cause of the crash is reported to be bad weather due to high winds and waves. The passengers of the boat were assisted by another recreational boat before the emergency services arrived at the scene. One of the injured is in a serious condition and was flown by helicopter to hospital. national Parks in the Canary Islands are under threat. The Dirección General de Protección de la Naturaleza of the Consejería de Educación Universidad y Sostenibilidad is facing the loss of some 4,264,931 Euros, a 73.48 % reduction from 2012’s investment. This may well affect the regional Government’s ability to fight fires in the forests, something that will be very much in the minds of many in Tenerife and La Gomera in particular after last summer’s devastating blazes. National park tour guides themselves are calling on everyone who cares about this wonderful natural space to sign a petition against the proposed budget cuts. As part of more wide-ranging anti-fraud/black economy measures (which include the ban on business cash payments over 2,500 Euros), Madrid has amended its fiscal requirements on foreigners’ assets held outside Spain. The new legislation is Ley 7/2012 of 29 October 2012, and the rules came into force immediately. The Hacienda (Spanish Inland Revenue) now requires residents to report any and all assets totalling more than 50,000 Euros held outside Spain; after the first declaration, these assets will need to be declared again if they have increased by 20,000 Euros.

MAny, many congratulations to the walkers and organisers of this year’s walk for Like. 2,200 people took part to raise funds, totalling 16,000 Euros and still counting.

Every one made a supreme effort during the walk with outfits which included angel wings,

tiaras, dancer’s frocks, and that was only the men!!! Dogs were dressed in their pink finery and the ladies looked pretty good too! There was a sea of pink balloons, including a huge balloon tower two Canarian bands played during the walk, inspiring everyone to keep going. It was a sight for sore eyes; everyone at Tenerife Weekly congratulates you all.

the EU transport Commission has approved the inclusion of Tenerife’s airport and port infrastructure into the Basic Transeuropean Network, which means that the island will now have “priority” when presenting projects for finance. The decision was made after almost three hours of voting, and places Santa Cruz as the principal port, along TFS Reina Sofia. The final vote on the project will be taken by the European Parliament early in 2013. Tenerife President Ricardo Melchior expressed his gratitude and said the decision was a giant step forwards for Tenerife. A 49-year-old woman died and two others were injured in a crash in Las Chafiras on Saturday. The collision involved two vehicles on the TF65 San Miguel to Los Abrigos road, and the force of the impact overturned the woman’s car. Emergency services at the scene attempted to save her life but her injuries were so extensive that they were unable to help her. She was eventually cut out of her vehicle by the bomberos. The other vehicle was a taxi containing two men of 35 and 38, both of whom were transferred to Hospitén Sur in conditions said not to be life-threatening. An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale was recorded at 10am on Monday in the sea off the top north east spur of Tenerife at a depth of 40 km. IGN says that these are quite normal in that area and represent no danger.

Adeje Carol Concert

Just a reminder that as part of Adeje’s Christmas programme there’s a multi-lingual Christmas carol concert this Sunday at 7 pm in the mirador in Callao Salvaje. The organizers say they would also invite people to bring wrapped gifts for children in need (particularly 8-12 year olds) if they would like to. It’s open air, so don’t forget a jacket as well …

Readers Letters

BEWARE, BEWARE THE B’S ARE OUT THERE Just a small reminder to be aware when out and about. Last week I was shopping in La Chafiras. In one shop I purchased 2 plant pots, paid for them, put the change in my purse, the purse into my bag and zipped the top of my bag. Being a woman I then went on to a shoe shop, just a short distance away and didn’t see anything that I liked, so I went onto a dress/ shoe shop 2 doors away. As I was looking at some shoes a man approached me with a ladies shoe in his hand and asked if I could tell him the size. I turned over the shoe and said size 37, he proceeded to ask me if a 38 was larger than a 37, trying to be helpful I told him yes. This man was not Spanish I would say that he was of Eastern European origin or something like that. It’s good to think that you have helped someone, OR IS IT? I did not purchase anything in that shop and walked down to the frozen food place just a few yards away. I got several types of frozen fruit, went to the counter opened my bag and my purse had gone. At this time I never thought about my being helpful to the man in the previous shop. I was alone and upset but retraced my steps to the last purchase I’d made, the two pots and asked if I had left my purse or possibly dropped it. No I was told, I went back twice but the answer was still no. I retraced my steps to the other two shops and asked but to no avail. The purse was gone. Then, as I sat in my car, still a little shaken, I remem-

bered the man and the fact that there had been someone else behind me. The penny dropped I had been the victim of a distraction robbery. Now when this happens you think about what happens next. I went to the police by Mac Donald’s only to find it unmanned. I had to go to Las Americas. I speak little or no Spanish, but I have to say that I found the police most helpful. I raised the denuncia on the telephone, speaking to someone who spoke English and after approx 90 minutes (waiting with others having had similar experiences), I got the denuncia. There was quite a bit of money in the purse but that is the least of my problems. I had my British driving license, credit card, debit card and my British EHIC card in my purse. When I got home I had to cancel my cards and order new ones and then ring DVLA and pay to have a new driving license printed. I also had to order a new EHIC card, neither of which can be sent here to Tenerife so I’ve had to arrange for someone to post them on to me. It is supposed to be the season of goodwill but please be aware that there are people out there that will take advantage and the only thing that you are left with are the problems that they have caused. How sad is it that helpful honest people have to be aware of the bad people in this world. Don’t become a victim. I will not see my money, purse, cards etc. again but if I can stop this happening to anyone else I’ll be happy. Merry Christmas to you all and keep constantly vigilant of those around you. MM

Tenerife Sur Lions Christmas Party

At this time each year Tenerife Sur Lions invite over 100 children from various orphanages for a party day out at the Jungle Park. Saturday 15th of December saw two coach loads of children and their carers gathered from different parts of the Island brought together for the Tenerife Sur Lions Christmas Party. The venue this year was the Jungle Park, previously known as the Eagle Park above Chayofa which laid on their spectacular show of the birds flying freely, but tame enough to take food gently from a child’s hand. Discovering the different and exciting areas of the “Jungle” was thirsty and hungry work for the large group who had been able to split up and wander to discover the sights. Lunch however brought all together in a special area

next to where the white tigers were swimming. Roy’s Pizzas provided the delicious piping hot specialities and there was sufficient for seconds and in some cases thirds! The most popular person present was Father Christmas who greeted each child and gave them all a gift which had kindly been donated by the children at Wingate School and wrapped by the members of the 6th form. A great day was had by all and it was a fitting start to the holiday period. The 6th form at Wingate School donated, collected and wrapped the presents in school for Santa Claus to give to the children at the party on their day out. They also held raffles and fund raisers and presented Lions President, Norman Goodall, with a cash donation to spend on the party day.

Lions: Ellie Gipps, second from left on the back row, was the organiser along with the form teacher Alison Finney.

Spanish Lawyer Loro Murdered? Parque is 40

An inquest has been held for a Spanish Lawyer who died from an overdose after telling friends that her fiancé was trying to kill her. 32-year-old Ana Hernandez was found dead with a cocktail of drugs in her blood, at her home in Doncaster that she had shared with partner Darren Stott, 42. She was four months pregnant. Friends said that Hernandez had previously told them: “Darren is trying to kill me. He’s trying to kill me with these drugs.” Her brother Rafael, 42, described Stott as a ‘control freak’. Stott, is believed to have moved to the Canary Islands where the couple had met and was not present at the inquest and attempts to contact him by the coroner failed.

Loro Parque held a huge party to celebrate their fortieth year, bringing together over 2,000 people from different areas covering civil, religious authorities and even the military. The guests were treated to a spectacle of music, dance, light, sound and acrobatics as well as a new Killer Whale show. A video showing the history of the park was also shown covering the past forty years on the history of the Park, which has received over 43 million visitors. Canary Islands President, Paulino Rivero, presided over the proceedings and stressed in his speech the importance of this zoo to the Puerto de la Cruz, and congratulated the founder of Loro Parque, Wolfgang Kiessling who has been awarded the Golden Medal of Tenerife, for his services to the Island.

Tenerife has a new superhero… and his name is Teide bear

foRMER recycling worker, Michael Booth has written a book to encourage recycling and help bond communities together, all with the help of teide Bear who just happens to have incredible super powers. He can fly at the speed of light, travel though time, talk to humans as well as animals and serves only to ‘rescue, recycle and reuse’ and he lives right here in tenerife.

In the first book Teide Bear and the Pirates is inspired by Mount Teide, obviously, is an adventure story which introduces our hero and his best friend, Lizsy the Fairy, a story that was born from a dream. Booth who lives in Nottinghamshire said: “I went to sleep one night and I had a dream about a super hero named Teide Bear. The next morning I jotted all of it down and gradually told people about it who said it was a great and unusual idea.” It was after speaking to friends at a school reunion that his book idea became a reality. “Four of us got together, including an artist and a proof reader and they helped me to get the book into practice. We’ve published the book ourselves and the illustrations are great.” Booth, who previously lived in Tenerife, and hopes to return soon if he can persuade his partner Lisz: “I love Tenerife and I’ve visited Mount Teide many times. It’s not promoted in any way, shape or form as it should be. It’s fantastic.” The book is about Teide Bear who goes on his first adven-

Teide Bear, who incidentally speaks several languages teaches bad people to be good people and works with the parrots, Pilot whales, dolphins and all other sea animals around Tenerife in a family orientated, holiday based adventure story that appeals to adults and children alike. In keeping with the green theme, the Kindle book is available from Amazon and he even has his own website, www. Teideb e a r. c o m , so you can keep up with al his adventures. T h e book,

ture,” he said. “It involves some animals and pirates and, of course, it is set on the island of Tenerife. It’s modern and I thought it was a good way to help educate children about recycling.”

translated into Spanish, French, Italian and Russian is also coming out in book form very soon. A soft-toy version of Teide Bear has also been produced which will go on sale soon.

Chapter 1 - A difficult Journey

The parrots were racing from the hot beach in the direction of the highest snow covered mountain on their group of islands. They were on a mission to get an urgent message to Teide Bear. It was an exhausting task flying as hard as they could to reach the top of the mountain where they hoped to find the famous bear. Higher and higher the group of birds flew. “Come on, lads.” said Henry. Henry was the leader of the parrots and the strongest flier .The flock of birds gained speed and their brightly coloured feathers stood out against the dark rock of the volcanic mountain. The birds constantly swapped positions as they proceeded on this urgent quest, eager to keep up with Henry. They were only halfway to their destination when Henry could hear some of the birds grumbling amongst themselves that it was about time they had a rest. Henry directed them to a clearing which had a large rock right in the middle that would act as a platform from which he could speak to them. The parrots landed and rested for a few minutes while they got their breath back. Henry let a few more minutes pass before he spoke to the birds. He had taken his position on the rock to speak to his group. “Right, you lot, listen carefully,” Henry said in a loud and clear voice. “My plan is to reach the top of this mountain quickly. I’ll take two volunteers with me and the rest of you can wait here for our return.” A sigh of relief came from most of the group but there were two birds that raised their wings and wanted to continue on the full journey. These were Eric, who had never been to the top of the mountain, and Philip, who was the second fastest flier in the group. The parrots had been contacted earlier by Pilot Whales that lived in the seas surrounding their islands. The whales had been swimming around that day, enjoying their adventures as they usually do, when they discovered a pirate ship travelling through their waters with a very unusual cargo aboard. It had turned out that this strange cargo needed to be rescued urgently. Eric and Philip joined Henry on the rock and all three got ready to continue on their journey upward to the snow covered peak of the mountain. It still looked a very long distance away. Henry and his two companions took to the air while the rest of the group waved them off. He and his two volunteers could hear various conversations coming from the group of birds below them but one word was repeated again and again: “Pirates.” Little did the birds know that they were not alone on the mountain. It so happened that a shy mountain fairy had been hiding close

by listening to the group’s conversation. Her name was Liszy and she had been on the island for a long time, even before Teide Bear had arrived there. She had become a great personal friend of the Bear but because of her shyness was usually a very private person. She realised Henry and his two friends were heading to the top of the mountain. She decided to follow them but keep out of sight until she could find out exactly why they wanted to contact her good friend Teide Bear. Eventually Henry, Eric and Philip, three now very tired parrots, reached the top of the mountain. Their brightly coloured feathers stood out even more against the white snowcovered peak. Fairy got fairly close to them without being seen but close enough to hear them talk. She could make out that the birds wanted Teide Bear to help them rescue someone or something from some nasty pirates. She remembered that Teide Bear had gone away a few days earlier but could not remember exactly when he was to return. She felt that she must inform the three birds of this but needed to pluck up courage to overcome her shyness and introduce herself to them. Philip and Eric both looked at Henry, asking the same question. “How do we find the Bear?” Henry thought back to what the Pilot Whales had told him concerning Teide Bear, which was not a lot. “Well, I suppose we wait here right at the top of this mountain and Teide Bear should easily see us, especially as we have bright-coloured feathers.” “But what about when it gets dark?” the other two birds replied. “I don’t know” said Henry, “Let’s just hope the bear spots us before that.” All three birds were now silent, just sitting there thinking about what to do next, when out popped the fairy as if from nowhere. It made the three parrots jump in alarm. “You’re not Teide Bear, are you?” Henry said in a stern voice. “Oh no no no” said the fairy, hovering gently in front of them, trying to cover up the fact that she was shy. “Teide Bear’s gone away for a few days and I’m not sure when he’s due to get back.” Henry could see that the fairy was a little embarrassed by her now reddish face. Henry comforted her. “It’s OK, little fairy, we’ll wait here for Teide Bear to return.” He then asked the fairy her name and introduced himself and the other parrots to her.

Telefonica Price Cuts

Telefonica is cutting its prices for its paytelevision services in an effort to keep its declining customer base. It has lowered its price for its “Imagenio” pay-TV services and also launched an entertainment package which features TV series and films, for 12 euros a month. Telefonica had 760,000 payTV accesses in Spain at the end of September, a drop of 6% year-on-year. The business had been hit by the government’s decision to increase value added tax to 21% up from 8% on September 1st. Telefonica is Spain’s number two in the television market, previously launched a television, Internet, fixed line and mobile bundle on October 1st in an effort to attract cashstrapped customers who were looking for the best deals. Consumer confidence has fallen hugely in Spain, retail

sales have been dropping for more than two years. The unemployment rate stands at one in four, with the economy not expected to grow again until late 2013. The company interested 35,470 new broadband customers in the first month of the launch of the bundled package offer, Fusion, according to data from Spain’s telecoms regulator, the CMT, but it continued to lose mobile telephone clients. Telefonica, hopes to reduce its debt to of 56 billion euros down to 50 billion euros by the end of 2012 , has said it is considering listing its Latin American businesses to raise cash. The company transferred about half of the shares of its Peruvian unit to its Latin American holding company on Tuesday, in a step closer to an initial public offering. It also plans to invest $2 billion in its Argentine unit in 2013 and 2014. Telefonica’s Latin American businesses now account for more of its revenue than recessionhit Europe.

Nuclear Power Penelope Cruz Plant Fronts Loewe Closes The oldest nuclear power plant in Spain is due to shut down on Sunday. The plan comes as the addition of new taxes, part of a new government energy reform, makes the plant in Garona untenable The government has introduced higher taxes on electricity generation to repay a

deficit of 24 billion euro energy bill after years of selling power at a loss. The energy reform could cost the plant 153 million euros in taxes in 2013. Owner of the plant, Nuclenor issued a statement saying this would “increase current economic losses to the point of sending Nuclenor into bankruptcy.” The plant in Garona opened in 1970 and produced about 1.4% Spanish electricity out-

put every year Spain’s industry ministry had wanted to keep the plant open to keep energy options for the country open, but Nuclenor would need to spend 120 million euros to keep the plant running, and pay the higher taxes. Presently, Spain relies on imports to cover its energy requirements and nuclear energy provides 20% of domestic electric demands.

Oscar winning actress Penelope Cruz, aged 38, is the new face of fashion brand Loewe. Apparently she did not take much persuading to take on the campaign for the Madrid based luxury brand: “They approached me and I said yes very quickly because it’s a Spanish brand, and everyone involved is from Spain. Although the designer is British, all the work is done in Spain,” she said. “It’s such an old company. I have grown up looking at their wonderful things.” Creative director at Loewe, Stuart Vevers said the actress has a ‘strong, sensual beauty’ that has served as an ‘inspiration’. Cruz has been quoted as saying she wanted to work with more Spanish brands since she worked with fashion label Mango back in 2009.

spain diVorCe Crisis CoUPLES in Spain, desperate for a divorce, are having to continue living together to avoid the costs of a divorce. Esther was desperate for a divorce. She had fallen in love with another man, who was dying of cancer. Her husband, Gaby had lost his factory job. Selling their house in Barcelona was impossible. Neither of them could afford a second home. They were already struggling to pay their mortgage. A divorce was out of the question. So for two years Esther stuck it out, leaving early in the morning, hiding from Gaby who became so obsessed with his wife that he spied on her from his car. She had panic attacks. “I felt trapped,” she said. It was even worse for him. The situation pushed him to the brink of suicide. “Being forced to live with a woman I loved who had rejected me was psychological torture,” he said. They finally managed to get divorced in November, after moving into tiny apartments. If marriage is for better or worse, richer or poorer, then these are the worst of times. Couples are paying a huge emotional price when they cannot afford the price of divorce. Accounts from judges, divorce lawyers and therapists, as well as couples themselves, show that many couples are staying in troubled relation-

ships longer as a result of an economic crisis. Last year, the number of divorces in Spain dropped 17% compared with 2006, according to the Spanish Judicial Council, a national association that represents the country’s judges. The divorce rate jumped in 2006 after changes to the divorce law made it easier to split up in 2005, but it has fallen with the crisis in Spain’s economy, according to the council. “There is no doubt that the crisis is pushing people to stay together,”

said José María Redondo, the council’s spokesman. The crisis is not only slowing down divorces but also transforming the process, according to divorce lawyers. Judges are reducing alimony payments and arguing couple have moved from fighting over property to the issue of who assumes debts. Some couples are literally dividing their homes into two, by sticking tape across the floor, said Álvaro Cavia, a leading Barcelonabased divorce lawyer. Unable to afford a divorce, couples

live together even as they engage openly in other romantic relationships. Fights over the lack of money, are the biggest source of arguments among couples trying to repair broken relationships, according to Myka Pedrero, a family psychologist in a suburb of Barcelona, who counselled her sister Esther. It is worst for unemployed couples, not just because of the money strains, but because they can spend all day together at home, getting on each other’s’ nerves.

When fighting couples share the same home it is especially confusing for children unable to accept their parents’ break-ups, she said. “The crisis makes things worse as it adds huge pressures to marriages when you don’t have a job and can’t pay the bills,” she said. “When people who want to split are forced to stay together it pollutes the whole ecosystem that is the family and drives both the man and the woman crazy.” Until the crisis, divorce was accepted as the easiest way

out of a bad marriage after decades during which it was banned during the Franco dictatorship. Divorce was first legalized in Spain 1981 but the law required couples to legally separate first, a period of reflection aimed at safeguarding the family in a socially conservative, Catholic country. The change in the law in 2005 has allowed couples to get “quickie divorces” without any separation. Couples have to have been married for at least three months to qualify.

santander forces Job losses

Banco Santander, the biggest bank in Spain by market value in the 17-country eurozone, will absorb two of its subsidiaries, Banesto and Banif, leading to job cuts and closures. the move is part of the restructuring of Spain’s financial system, which has been hit by the collapse of the property market. the government is pushing for mergers and takeovers to create fewer, but stronger, banks. The absorption will save money through the integration of services and the closure of 700 branches, but Santander said it would reduce staff gradually but gave no indication of how many people would lose their jobs. Santander S.A. owns around 90% of Banesto. It acquired it in 1994, a year after it was taken over it had been taken over by the central bank after an audit revealed a shortfall of capital. Santander took over the private bank Banif after it merged with Banco Central Hispano in 1999.

Brain Damaged Briton Held In Prison Andrew Dmytruk, aged 51, from Nottingham is a brain-damaged Briton with a mental age of ten, has been jailed for four years in Spain after admitting to arson. His mother, who is dying of cancer, has said that he had only pleaded guilty to get a shorter sentence so he could see her before she died.

Dmytruk, was arrested in Benidorm in December 2010 after a fire at the hotel where he had been staying with his mother, celebrating his fiftieth birthday. The prosecution says that Dmytruck started a fire in the hotel, which had to be evacuated. Several guests required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation. Dmytruck was arrested and imprisoned in Alicante, where he has been ever since. He

has always protested his innocence, and accepted a plea bargain in exchange for a sentence of four years and four months rather than the nine years that the prosecution was demanding. His mother, Doris O’Brien says: “He had meningitis as a child and he had it bad so he is brain-damaged. He’s like a ten-year-old and has always lived with me. They had him over a barrel and they had made their mind up, so if he had pleaded not guilty they would have given him nine years.” She says that she has always believed her son is innocent, in bed when the fire started. “He was on the wrong floor at the wrong time.” The family had been holidaying in Benidorm for 33 years. “He loves the Spanish and he’s never been in trouble in all that time.” She also says that British consular officials were now examining the possibility of him being transferred to a British jail.

A British embassy spokesperson said that had given consular assistance to both Dmytruk and his mother since his arrest and have discussed his case with Spanish authorities several times. Dmytruk has had regular consular visits due to his physical and emotional state. The case had also raised concerns over the length of time that he has been in prison. Fair Trials International (FTI), who are campaigning on his behalf say he should have been released on bail. “The years that Andrew has spent in pre-trial detention, separated from the mother he has always relied on, has taken a massive toll on him,” said Jago Russell, chief executive of FTI. “Given his obvious vulnerability and his mother’s serious ill-health, we hope he can be transferred back to the UK as a matter of urgency.” Russell added that the issue of lengthy pre-trial detention was a major concern. “Over the past five

years, there have been hundreds of people in Andrew’s situation: people imprisoned far from home, and waiting months on end for the chance to clear their name.” Spain has a bad record, 20% of all FTI clients have reported pre-trial

delays, some lasting as long as four years. The FTI want a system of deferred extradition under European arrest warrants until a case is ready for trial as well as new EU laws setting minimum standards for the use of pre-trial detention.

No Mubarak Assets Pension Seized Increase Assets owned by Hosni Mubarak, the former Egyptian president, and people close to him have been seized by Spanish police. An international request made by Egypt to block beach properties and luxury cars in Marbella said to belong to Mubarak and 130 people associated with him.

Spain’s interior ministry said it had so far frozen EUR 28 million worth of the assets. Properties including two houses in La Moraleja, a wealthy section of Madrid, seven properties in the beach resort of Marbella, financial accounts in three banks and several luxury vehicles, have all been seized. “The assets could be the proceeds of crimes such as the embezzlement of public funds, corruption or the illegal enrichment committed during his mandate,” a Spanish government statement said. Hours later, Spain’s Ministry of the Interior released a statement, saying that it

The Spanish parliament has approved the Government’s decision not to revalue pensions in line with inflation for 2012. All opposition parties opposed the move.

had blocked EUR 18.4 million worth of the properties seized by the police. Egypt has asked other countries worldwide to locate any assets owned by Mubarak and his associates.

Switzerland has confirmed it has also frozen assets of up to $441m linked to the former president. Mubarak, who was forced out of power in February 2011, ruled Egypt for three

decades. In June, he was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the deaths of protesters during the uprising that led to his fall. Currently he is in a military hospital due to health problems.

The controversial decree, which was approved in November by Mariano Rajoy’s conservative government, was ratified solely with the support of the Popular Party, which has a majority in the Congress of Deputies. The decision meaning a decrease in purchasing power of retirees, received 178

votes in favour, 148 against and one abstention. All the opposition rejected the decision of the Moncloa Palace not to increase pensions and accused the Executive of taking away citizen’s rights. The parliamentary groups, including those who usually support Rajoy’s resolutions, called the measure unjust and unconstitutional. The forces represented in Congress agreed to sign a joint appeal to the Constitutional Court (TC) during the debate, on the grounds that the decision not to upgrade pension violates a bound duty to pensioners.

Amy Winehouse New Inquest

The coroner who oversaw the original inquest into the death of singer Amy Winehouse was not qualified to do so. At the time, Deputy Assistant Coroner Suzanne Greenaway recorded a verdict of misadventure after

Winehouse was found dead at her north London home aged just 27.

The St Pancras Coroner’s Court heard that she had died after going on a drinking binge following a long period of not drinking. Winehouse had a long history of drug and alcohol abuse and had turned to drink after

managing to kick her drug habit in 2008. She had been taking drugs to stop her from drinking but had refused therapy. At the time of her death, it was recorded that she had five times the drink-drive limit of alcohol in her blood. Dr Christina Romete told the inquest: “She was one of the most intelligent young women I’ve ever met. She

was very determined to do everything her way, including her therapy. She had very strict views on that.” Ms Greenaway was appointed coroner in July 2009 by her husband, Andrew Reid, who was the coroner for Inner North London. Greenaway had worked as a solicitor and barrister in Australia. She stepped down in November when it emerged she did not

have the requisite five years’ experience in the Law Society. Dr Reidalso resigned after investigators found he had not “thoroughly” checked his wife had the requisite qualifications for the position. Under British law, Ms Greenaway would have needed either five years with the Law Society or five years of experience as a qualified medical practitioner. She had

neither set. A spokesman for the Winehouse family said: “The family were happy with the way the original inquest was conducted and did not request it to be reheard. “This seems to be a matter of procedure and the verdict is not expected to change.” The new hearing is scheduled for January 8 at St Pancras Coroner’s Court.

Sandy Hook – Victims and Heroes

The parents of Dylan Hockley, sixyear-old British boy killed in the Sandy Hook shootings have said they will never regret moving to Connecticut. He was one of the 20 children and six adults shot dead by gunman Adam Lanza in what is being called America’s worst school shooting.

Little Dylan was born in Hampshire to a British father and American mother, Ian and Nicole Hockley, and the family moved to Newtown two years ago. They spoke through the British Foreign Office saying: “It was an impossible day for us, but even in our grief we cannot comprehend what other people may have experienced,” they said. The couple, who also have an older son called Jake, said they had chosen the Sandy Hook area because of its close community and Sandy Hook Elementary School, where the massacre took place. “Sandy Hook and Newtown have warmly welcomed us since we moved here two

years ago from England. We do not and shall never regret this choice. Our boys have flourished here and our family’s happiness has been limitless.” They praised the staff at the school including head teacher Dawn Hochsprung, who was killed as she confronted Lanza when entered the school, and teacher Vicki Soto, who has been hailed a hero as she tried to protect her pupils by hiding them in cupboards. “Though our hearts break for Dylan, they are also filled with love for these and the other beautiful women who all selflessly died trying to save our children. Everyone who met Dylan fell in love with him. His beaming smile would light up any room and his laugh was the sweetest music. He loved to cuddle, play tag every morning at the bus stop with our neighbours, bounce on the trampoline, play computer games, watch movies, the colour purple, seeing the moon and eating his favourite foods, especially chocolate. “He was learning to read and was so proud when he read us a new book every day. He adored his big brother Jake, his best friend and role model. There are no words that can express our

feeling of loss. We will always be a family of four, as though Dylan is no longer physically with us; he is forever in our hearts and minds. We love you Mister D, our special gorgeous angel.” Police released the names of all of the victims of the atrocity they were: Charlotte Bacon, age 6, Daniel Barden, 7, Olivia Engel, 6, Josephine Gay, 7, Ana M MarquezGreene, 6, Dylan Hockley, 6, Madeleine F Hsu, 6, Catherine V Hubbard, 6, Chase Kowalski , 7, Jesse Lewis, 6, James Mattioli, 6, Grace McDonnell, 7, Emilie Parker, 6, Jack Pinto, 6, Noah Pozner, 6, Caroline Previdi, 6, Jessica Rekos, 6, Avielle Richman, 6, Benjamin Wheeler, 6, Allison N Wyatt, 6, Rachel Davino, 29, Dawn Hochsprung, 47, Nancy Lanza, 52, Anne Marie Murphy, 52, Lauren Rousseau, 30, Mary Sherlach, 56, and Victoria Soto, 27. Head teacher Dawn Hochsprung and therapist Diane Day both went to the aid of their pupils after hearing gunshots. Diane said: “We were there for about five minutes chatting, and we heard Pop! Pop! Pop! I went under the table. They didn’t think twice about confronting or seeing what was going on.” Ms Hochsprung is believed to have switched on

a loudspeaker system in the school to alert students and staff to the danger. She was later shot dead by the gunman Fourth-grade teacher Theodore Varga said: “You could hear the hysteria that was going on.. Everyone in the school was listening to the terror that was transpiring.” “She was just an amazing woman ... the kids loved her. It’s a huge loss for our school and our town,” said assistant librarian Maryanne Jacobs. First-grade teacher Kaitlin Roig barricaded her 15 students inside a tiny bathroom with a bookshelf and told them to be “absolutely quiet”. She told ABC News: “I said, ‘there are bad guys out there now. We need to

wait for the good guys’. “They asked, ‘Can we go see if anyone is out there? I just want Christmas. I don’t want to die; I just want to have Christmas.’” Another hero was firstgrade teacher Vicki Leigh Soto, 27, described by police as someone who “put herself between the kids and the gunman’s bullets”. Her body was found huddled with the students outside a classroom cupboard. She had hidden the children and told the gunman that they had already gone. Six of the children ran away and were shot, but she managed to save the majority of her class, before being shot dead herself. Robert Licata, whose six-

year-old son was in one of the classrooms when the gunman burst in and opened fire, said he told him the gunman did not say anything. He said: “That’s when my son grabbed a bunch of his friends and ran out the door. “He was very brave. He waited for his friends.” A father paid an emotional tribute to his murdered sixyear-old daughter. Robbie Parker said his final conversation with Emilie was in Portuguese, he had been helping her to learn the language. “She told me ‘good morning’ and asked how I was doing, and I said that I was doing well,” he told reporters. “She said that she loved me, and I gave her a kiss and I was out the door.”

Obama Commissions Gun Report

Barack Obama has commissioned a panel have been tasked with developing proposals to curb gun violence, saying the country has a “deep obligation” to prevent any further events similar to the massacre in Connecticut. “If there is even one thing we can do to prevent any of these events, we have a deep obligation - all of us - to try,” Mr Obama said.

Vice President Joe Biden - a long time gun control advocate - will lead the panel, from which Mr Obama has said he expects “concrete proposals” no later than January. “This is not some Washington commission,” he said. “This is not something where folks are going to be studying the issue for six months and publishing a report that gets read then pushed aside. This is a team that has a very specific task to put together real reforms right now.” Mr Obama said he plans to push through the proposed reforms as soon as the panel completes its work. “I will use all the powers of this office to help prevent tragedies like this,” the president said at the White House on Wednesday, less than a week after 20-year-old Adam Lanza went the killing spree at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut.

Australian Customs Drug Ring smashed

A drug smuggling operation which is alleged to have involved members of Australian customs officials has been discovered at Sydney airport. Eight people have been detained, with more expected, after police descended on the airport following a two-year corruption probe. Large quantities of drugs were smuggled through the airport in backpacks and suitcases, corrupt officials used their knowledge of the security systems to allow the narcotics through the international terminal undetected. Australian Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said one customs officer, one quarantine officer and two members of the public were arrested this week. Another four were arrested in August and October. “There is no place for corruption in our law enforcement agencies,” he said. “Where

it exists we have to weed it out.” Mr Clare added that most law enforcement officers were good, honest, hardworking people. “But we can’t be naive,” he said, adding there would always be people who would be tempted. “There will always be the risk that our law enforcement officers could end up working for the crooks.” He said that thousands of customs officers heading to work after the arrests would be disgusted by the reports of corruption. “My message to them is this: you can expect more stings, you can expect more arrests and you can expect more reform,” he said. “If you’re corrupt we’ll hunt you down and lock you up.” Local media reported that customs officers at Sydney Airport had allegedly been working with organised crime figures to import drugs. Up to 20 officials are suspected as being involved in serious misconduct or corrupt dealings, the allegations range from criminal association to leaking information, drug

trafficking and bribery. They are suspected of importing pseudoephedrine, cocaine and steroids. Tony Negus, Australian Federal Police Commissioner said alleged couriers were sent

overseas to collect drugs before coming through customs with the aid of people in trusted positions. The Australian Government now plans to establish a Customs Reform Board providing

advice and recommendations to ministers on how to bolster integrity in the agency. Australian Customs and Border Protection Service acting chief, Michael Pezzullo, said his job now was to drive fur-

ther integrity reforms. “I’m not so naive as to think that criminal elements will not attempt to penetrate this service, its systems and its staff,” he said. “We’re going to root out these cells.”

I’m A Celebrity Ofcom Investigation

Ofcom, the media watchdog is launching an investigation into I’m A Celebrity.. Get Me Out Of Here won by Eastenders actress Charlie Brooks. Several viewers complained about a stunt involving Brooks’ 7-yearold daughter, Kiki. The actress was taking part in a trial which involved both her and darts player Eric Bristow choosing from various doors, which had treats behind them. Brooks did not realise that her daughter was behind one of the doors and later said it was “heartbreaking” when she was

told. Brooks, 31, had not seen her daughter for 18 days. “I signed up for this show, but Kiki didn’t. I didn’t want her to be so upset. I had no idea this was happening. It was my lowest point,” she said. My mum gave the green light for her to be there because it was an opportunity for Kiki to see me - and I think she thought she would.” A spokesman for the show said that “she was fine. Kiki and her grandma come to the jungle every day with the other friends and family, so the experience wasn’t as out of the ordinary as it might look.”

Ofcom received 66 complaints about the trial and will investigate whether ITV took due care to protect Kiki’s welfare and if the potential for offence caused by scenes of Brooks appearing distressed following the stunt were justified by the context. Under the broadcasting code, due care must be taken over the physical and emotional welfare of under 18s irrespective of any consent given by a parent or guardian. They must also not be caused unnecessary distress or anxiety from their involvement in programmes.

queen’s Historic number 10 Visit

tHE Queen has become the first monarch to visit Cabinet since the 18th century, while on a special visit to mark her diamond Jubilee. She was met by Prime Minister david Cameron on the steps of number 10, wearing a deep blue coat and matching dress by Stuart Parvin the Queen collected a present bought by the Secretaries of State to mark her 60-year reign. Cabinet members had clubbed together to buy her a set of 60 placemats, one for each year she has been on the throne.

The bespoke mats show traditional images of Buckingham Palace, had been suggested by the Queen’s aides and made by Gloucestershire Company Lady Clare Limited. Officials refused to announce the value of the gifts. An unspecified donation had also been made to the Diamond Jubilee Trust. Ministers each lined up during a meet and greet and shook hands with the monarch before they all went into the final Cabinet of the year. The Queen took her chance during the

meet-and-greet to question George Osborne about Britain’s gold reserves. She sat between Mr Cameron and Foreign Secretary William Hague for her halfhour session at the famous Cabinet table. She stayed for the first section before leaving ministers to their discussions and moved on to the Foreign Office. During the meeting, Mr Cameron offered her a “very warm welcome” and congratulated her “on a fantastic jubilee year”. It is though that The Queen is the first monarch to attend Cabinet since George III in 1781, despite claims Queen Victoria had also done so Mr Cameron said that Downing Street had researched the last monarch to visit Cabinet and believe it dates back to the 18th century. George VI, the Queen’s father, met with the Cabinet during World War II, but did not go to the standard meeting. “We think the last time a monarch came to the Cabinet was in 1781, during the American War of Independence, but I’m happy to report that relations have improved slightly since then,” Mr Cameron said. The Queen joked “gently and humorously” that the Cabinet could make the next Queen’s Speech on “the shorter rather than the longer side”. The only other moment she spoke was to wish ministers “hap-

py Christmas” as she left. Communities Secretary Eric Pickles said: “The Queen seemed very relaxed, in a very good mood and took an enormous interest in the Cabinet discussion,” he revealed. “I think people were perhaps more considered in what they say, but nevertheless it was a proper discussion on the general economic situation and the inflation figures and Afghanistan.” Pickles dismissed warnings that the Queen was crossing a constitutional line by

attending the Cabinet. “We are her Cabinet, we operate for her. She was sat in the seat where the Prime Minister traditionally sits and, given it’s her Cabinet, she can come any time she wants,” he said. The Foreign Office has also announced that the southern part of British Antarctic Territory is to be named “Queen Elizabeth Land” to mark her Diamond jubilee. It is a barren, ice and snowcovered area uninhabited by people and virtually devoid of animal life.

the Queen’s Christmas message is to be broadcast in 3d and Hd for the very first time. Her traditional broadcast will go hi-tech to allow viewers to see the Queen as never before, during her diamond Jubilee year. Viewers will still be able to see the monarch, now aged 86, in normal definition during the speech which will be shown, as usual, at 3pm on Christmas Day. This will be the first time any member of the royal family has been filmed in 3D. Buckingham Palace said the Queen thought it was “absolutely lovely” and was very keen on the idea. Her Majesty wanted to embrace something new to mark her 60th year on the throne. While it has not been revealed what her message will contain but it is thought likely there will be references to the Olympics and her Diamond Jubilee.

Charity Donations Down By 20%

Drops in donations and funding, means that as many as one in six charities could be forced to close next year. Public donations are down by 20% and many charities are using reserve funds to cover their outgoings and cut back on staff. This is according to figures released by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF). Midi Music Company was launched by Wozzy Brewster in London, 18 years ago to help children get into music. He has had to cut back on work with poorer families and young people in nearby

Lewisham and ask two members of staff to leave. “Small charities like ours, in the middle of areas where gang warfare is going on, are in need of far greater donations. At the moment, we are still short of £10,000 for this financial year. If we don’t achieve that it will just add to our accumulating deficit.” Lynne Featherstone, the Government’s aid minister caused outrage when she called for charities to be more self-sufficient and not rely on Government hand outs. But Rhodri Davies, policy manager at the CAF, said: “The majority of charities in the UK get no money from Government, never have done and will probably never look to. We’re realistic; mon-

ey from Government has been cut back, there have been public spending cuts across the board and charities have to bear their share of that. But what we’re say-

ing is that where Government and local authorities do make cuts to public spending, they shouldn’t just disproportionately load those onto charities.”

Charities minister Nick Hurd suggested that everyone should try to give 1% of their annual salary to charity to help stop the decline in donations. The CAF has also

launched its Back Britain’s Charities campaign, calling on the Government, businesses and individuals to get behind charitable organisations.

Elton Backs Cancer Charity Bid

Four-year-old LilyMae Morrison from County Galway, in Ireland suffers from Neuroblastoma, a rare and high risk form of childhood cancer. She has inspired none other than Elton John to back a campaign to make his charity version of hit song Tiny Dancer Ireland Christmas number one, to help raise funds. Sir Elton recorded a special message of support for Lily-Mae and urged fans to buy the song. Over 300 of some of Ireland’s top artists have sung or performed including Declan O’Rourke, Camille O’Sullivan and Paddy Casey. The single - Tiny Dancer- A Song for Lily-Mae - has already been at the top of the Irish charts for two weeks, beating off competition from Labrinth, Emeli Sande, Rihanna, Olly Murs and One Direction. It is now the fastest selling single in the Irish Republic in 2012.

All the money raised will go to the Sunni Mae Trust to help Lily-Mae and further research into Neuroblastoma, and to the Neuroblastoma Society. A blog on the Sunni Mae Trust website, gives updates on her progress, urges people to buy Tiny Dancer and beat the single from X Factor winner James Arthur to the Number One spot. It says: “The X Factor does not need another Christmas number one, Neuroblastoma does. It needs that number one spot so that it is no longer a disease that no one has ever heard of. So that it gets more research and funding, so that hopefully other families don’t have to go through what Lily-Mae and her family are going through.” A special Facebook page has been set up: Pray For LilyMae (the tiny dancer) says: “James Arthur will have an incredible future in the music industry, he already has had the best start of any X Factor winner; Lily-Mae, on the other hand, has an uncertain future, she gets one shot at this, he will have many. Please, give Lily-Mae the best possible Christmas present, short of curing her cancer,

Jude and Lily-Mae listen at the recording of Tiny Dancer give her the Christmas No.1!” Parents Judith and Leighton Morrison, both of whom are professional ballet dancers attended the recording of the single, and were

delighted at the choice of song. “Tiny Dancer is one of my partner Judy’s favourite songs so we were thrilled to hear that it was going to be released for us,” said Mr

Morrison. “We are both ballet dancers and Lily-Mae loves dancing, when she grows up she wants to be a ballet dancer as well. She is our tiny dancer.”

Tiny Lily-Mae has already undergone surgery to remove seven tumours, but faces more stem cell treatment, radiotherapy and immunotherapy.

Britain’s Hungry School Kids Teachers are putting their hands in their pockets to feed hungry schoolchildren with food hand outs and money to buy lunch, a recent survey has revealed. Thousands of pupils living on poverty line miss out on breakfast and lunch because their families cannot afford to feed them. A study by The Children’s Society reveals more than half of Britain’s teachers are seeing hungry pupils in their classes. Almost three in four teachers said they have seen children coming into school with no lunch and no money to buy anything. One teacher in South London was quoted as saying: “I’ve quite often put my hand in my pocket because I hate to see the children going hungry. I can’t see why I can’t put my hand in my pocket just to help them out

for that time.” The survey, conducted with the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) and the National Union of Teachers (NUT), showed twothirds (66%) of school staff say teachers are helping pupils with food or money for meals when they turn up for lessons hungry. One teacher, quoted in the report: ‘’Myself and many teachers in other schools feed children with bread or crackers in the morning from their own budget.’’ Another said: “It really does impact on the attention span of the children. They lose their concentration and make poor behaviour choices in class. It’s compounded if they have not had breakfast and lunch.” Although the Government states it is committed to providing free school meals for those that need them the most, campaigners say proposed benefit changes next year may see some families

Sheena Monnin’s a Miss USA contender who had claimed the beauty pageant was fixed has been ordered to pay the organisation £3.1m for defamation. An arbitrator found that her comments about billionaire businessman Donald Trump’s pageant were false, harmful and malicious. The £3.1m figure was the amount the arbitrator said the pageant had lost from a sponsor in 2013 following Monnin’s allegations on Facebook and on the NBC’s Today show. At the time, Ms Monnin was Miss Pennsylvania USA, but resigned after she failed to make it past the 2012 Miss USA contest’s preliminary rounds. In her Facebook post, she wrote:

“I witnessed another contestant who said she saw the list of the top 5 before the show ever started. I knew the show must be rigged. ... and from what I witnessed is dishonest.” The arbitrator ruled that there was no reasonable possibility the pageant’s judging was fixed. “Monnin claimed the pageant was rigged within minutes of being passed over as one of the sixteen semifinalists, and before she had any purported factual basis for her allegation of rigging,” arbitrator Theodore H. Katz wrote in his ruling. He also said Ms Monnin objected to the pageant’s decision to allow transgender contestants. Ms Monnin did not appear at the arbitration. Her lawyer’s office made no comment.

school meals available to all children living in poverty.” A third of the teachers also said they felt the size of the free school meal was small or inadequate, a view echoed by an unemployed mother whose 11-year-old

son eats school lunch. She said: “Free school meals are a necessity for people like me who are on benefits and on a budget but the amount they get to eat at school is a joke. It’s not worth putting down in front of them.

It’s not enough. It’s a joke. As soon as my son comes home he’s in the fridge saying, ‘I’m hungry’ but if he wasn’t on free school meals he’d be on packed lunches and that would cost £4 a day - which is a hell of a lot of money.”

us Hacker faces no further action

tHE director of Public Prosecutions has announced that computer hacker Gary McKinnon, who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome, will face no further criminal action. He could have served 60 years in prison if convicted in the US for alleged breaches of US military and nasa networks. this follows a review after the U.K. Government’s decision to block his extradition to the US in october on health grounds, after medical reports showed he was very likely to try to kill himself if he was extradited. Prosecutors had to decide whether Mr McKinnon should be tried in Britain regarding

the allegations but said it was appropriate for the trial to be in the US. That means no further charges will be levelled. Prime Minister David Cameron and his deputy, Nick Clegg, had condemned plans to send him to the US. However, the decision not to extradite has “disappointed” the US authorities. The Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer QC, said: “Following discussions between the US Department of Justice, the police and the Crown Prosecution Service in the autumn of 2002, a decision was taken that the appropriate place for Mr McKinnon to be tried was the United States.” The US then sought Mr McKinnon’s extradition for trial in the US. The decision that any trial should be held in the US was confirmed in 2009 and then challenged in the High Court, the challenge failed, Mr

Starmer said. “So far as the evidence is concerned, the position in 2012 is the same as it was in 2002.” Mr McKinnon’s lawyer Karen Todner said: “I have mixed feelings about this. I am pleased he is not going to be prosecuted because I wouldn’t want to think he would ever spend any time in prison given his mental situation. “But I am disappointed because the extradition warrant is still outstanding because he can’t travel anywhere outside of the UK and will have this hanging over him until it’s resolved. We have discussed approaching President Obama and asking for a pardon.” His mother, Janis Sharp, said the announcement was “just wonderful”. She added that she thought a pardon from the US was possible because Mr Obama “seems like a good person and so does his wife”.

Kim goes minnelli baCK sTage wilde on on in london The Tube

A refreshed Kim wilde, has become a youtube sensation after a video was posted by viralspiralgroup.com of the 1980’s pop star entertaining fellow passengers on the London underground to an impromptu concert.

Wilde, filmed wearing a pair of reindeer antlers, was accompanied on guitar by her brother Ricky sang Rocking Around The Christmas Tree, as they made their way home after a Christmas party. “Kim Wilde and Ricky Wilde serenade passengers on the

train home after the MagicFM Christmas Party,” Katherine Eames, who uploaded the six-minute video to YouTube, wrote on the website. The singer tweeted: “truly,i am overwhelmed and confused at such a huge reaction to my night out on the tiles. Making me giggle a LOT: )”

foRty years after her last appearance at the Royal festival Hall, Liza Minnelli is set to return as part of a celebration of Cabaretera Berlin next March.

She last appeared on stage at the south London venue in 1973 with her solo show Liza with a Z. She said: “I’m always so excited to perform in Lon-

don, I have so many friends and fans there I consider it my second home. And to be returning to the Royal Festival Hall after all this time is thrilling. I remember bringing Liza with a Z there in the early 70s and having such a swell time. So I can’t wait to see all you guys again.” The daughter of Judy Garland, Minnelli won Best Ac-

tress Oscar for her performance as Sally Bowles in the 1972 film Cabaret, set in Germany during the Nazis rise to power. She will perform songs from the hit musical as part of the Southbank Centre’s Berlin in the ‘20s and ‘30s weekend, which includes a screening of the film. Jude Kelly, artistic director of the Southbank Centre,

said: “We are delighted to welcome back Liza Minnelli to the Royal Festival Hall. Fosse’s Cabaret is one of the most iconic, intimate depictions of 1930s’ Berlin and we are thrilled that the artist who so brilliantly gave life to the complex character of Sally Bowles can take part as we look back at this particular moment in history.”

Lord Coe – Lifetime Achievement Award

Lord Sebastian Coe was presented with a Lifetime Achievement award during the BBC Sports Personality of the Year event. He was recognised not only for his remarkable career as an athlete and contribution to sport in the UK, but also for the huge role he played in the success of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In 2004, Lord Coe became chairman for the London 2012 bid team and transformed the city’s campaign to host the Games. His final speech securing London as the hosts is remembered as truly inspirational; he focused on the need to engage young people in sport to create the next generation of champions. Lord Coe also remembered as one of Britain’s greatest athletes, he became a double

Duchess Presents UK Tax Payer To Pay Awards Olympic champion and is a 12time world record-holder. He won gold in the 1500m and silver in the 800m at both the Moscow 1980 and Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games. He retired from athletics in 1990 and went on to become a Conservative MP for Fal-

mouth and Camborne, a Government Whip then Private Secretary to William Hague. He was made a peer on 2002, and he received his knighthood in the New Year’s Honours List in 2006. He is now the Chairman of the British Olympic Association helping

Team GB build on the success of London 2012. The Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates those who have made a significant contribution to sport and demonstrable success in their relevant sport throughout their careers.

For Comet Collapse

The British taxpayer may have to shell out £50m for the collapse of electrical retailer Comet. A report from administrators Deloitte says that indications show that insufficient funds have been raised from closing the company to be able to pay around £24m in redundancy payments to the 6,000 staff. The Government will probably have to step in to ensure workers receive their payments. Unsecured creditors, including HM Revenue and Customs, will receive nothing; this also includes ITV and Google, which are owed for unpaid advertising bills. Holders of £4.7m of unclaimed Comet gift cards and vouchers are also on the list of unsecured

creditors. The Tax Office is due £26.1m by the firm.

Secured creditors, such as the backers of Comet’s parent company Hailey Acquisitions, can expect to receive payments of just under £50m. But according to the

Sunday Telegraph, there is a shortfall of £95m on the amount owed at the time of the collapse of the 236 store chain in early November. The Comet chain reported losses of £95m in the year to April, with a further £31m in the subsequent five months

as credit insurers lost confidence and withdrew support for the business. Deloitte reports that the last 50 stores will close for the final time this week, prompting speculation that the brand will be sold to an online retailer.

The Duchess of Cambridge made her first public appearance since leaving hospital at the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year Awards. She was attending in her capacity as an official ambassador of Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic team, and presented Lord Coe with His Lifetime Achievement Award. She also presented the main prize to cyclist Bradley Wiggins. Wiggins picked up the most public votes after his triumph in the Tour de France and gold medal

in the Olympics time trial. Heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis was second while US Open winner and Olympic gold medallist Andy Murray came third. Kate met some of the award winners after the show including Sue and Jim Houghton, and Martine Wright, who won the Helen Rollason accolade. The Duchess admitted to Wright - a Paralympic athlete and July 7 bombings survivor - that her time on stage had been “well scary”. When asked how she was by show presenter Gary Lineker, she said she was now “very well”.

facebook privacy Changes

fACEBooK is fine-tuning its privacy controls in an effort to make them easier to understand. Several revisions have been made to make the social networking site more discreet. the changes are due to be introduced over the next few weeks and continue into the new year. the revamp is the most extensive

overhaul of facebook’s privacy controls for 15 months. facebook, now eight years old, has been criticised for not providing its users with easily accessible ways to organise their information and photos posted on the website.

The most obvious change will be new “privacy shortcuts” sections that show as a tiny lock on the right-hand

side of the screen at the top of news feeds. This feature has a drop-down box where users can get answers to common questions such as “Who can see my stuff?” and “How do I stop someone from bothering me?” There will also be a tool that enables people to review all the publicly available pictures identifying them on Facebook and information about how to request removal of embarrassing or unflattering photographs. Facebook has also scheduled a privacy education page at the top of users’ news feeds

to help manage their online identities. Facebook rarely removes a photo on its own, but new features help users ask a friend who posted the image to take it down. Critics have long accused Facebook of deliberately complicating its privacy controls and exposing as much personal information as possible to attract more advertisers. But Facebook director of product management, Samuel Lessin, says: “Our number one priority is to not surprise users with our controls.”

facebook smashes Criminal ring

tHE fBi, alongside several international agencies, has arrested 10 people it claims infected computers with “yahos” malicious software, and stole credit card, bank and other personal information. the criminal ring infected 11 million computers, causing more than £527m in total losses, was caught by a team led by the fBi and a facebook security team. “Yahos” targeted Facebook users from 2010 to Octo-

ber 2012 and the social network site helped identify the criminals and spot affected accounts. The FBI said Facebook’s security systems were “able to detect affected accounts and provide tools to remove these threats”. According to the agency, the hackers employed the “butterfly botnet”, - networks of compromised computers which are then used in cyberattacks on personal computers. Experts say cybercrime is on the increase as PC and mobile computing as more people are using them for financial transactions online.

Christmas Tree Syndrome

Your Christmas tree may be your centrepiece decoration, but it could be ruining your health. Researchers call it Christmas Tree Syndrome, but it is not only trees that can cause problems, nuts and berries on table decorations can also spark off reactions. Asthma can be triggered by mould and spores on trees that flourish when brought into homes. Health issues were initially documented by American allergy specialist Dr Lawrence Kurlandsky, who noticed how some specific illnesses surged at Christmas. Research by Upstate Medical University in New York found more than 50 different kinds of mould from bark and pine needles from Christmas trees that had been kept in homes, according to the results in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. By the time the tree has been up for the 12 days of Christmas the amount of spores found in an average home increased from 800 per cubic metres to 5,000, which is more than enough to cause a reaction, especially if you consider that only 50 pollen per cubic metres sets off hay fever.

Professor Jonathan Brostoff, an allergy expert at King’s College London, said: “The spores and moulds you find on trees can set off people’s asthma. It’s like them having late summer hay fever but in December because of the Christmas tree. It’s a problem for people who already have respiratory conditions. I would say it probably affects a very small percentage of the population but if you are one it can be quite uncomfortable. The only real solution if you are affected is to get a plastic one. It won’t take away from the effect there are some very nice plastic ones and if it looks the part then that’s fine.” Those are risk are advised to wash and dry their tree before bringing it inside and to get rid of the tree by Boxing Day if possible, or get a plastic one.

Barcode Inventor 10 Girls Killed By Landmine Dies The man who invented the barcode, Norman Joseph Woodland, has died aged 91. The graduate student teamed up with classmate Bernard Silver and they created the thick-and-thin line system in the 1940’s. Mr Woodland came up with the Morse codeinspired idea while he was sitting on a chair surrounded by sand. In 1999, he told Smithsonian magazine: “I poked my four fingers into the sand and for whatever reason - I didn’t know - I pulled my hand toward me and drew four lines. I said: ‘Golly! Now I have four lines, and they could be wide lines and narrow lines instead of dots and dashes’.” His idea was patented in the US 60 years ago and sold to battery storage company Philco for £9,300, worth around £80,000) in today’s money. The patent expired in the 1960s Mr woodland was working at IBM, they tweaked the design and made it into what we recognise now. The first item to be scanned was

a packet of chewing gum in a supermarket in Ohio in 1974. It is now printed on millions of items around the world and scanned billions of times every day. Mr Woodland and Mr Silver were inducted into the US National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2011 in recognition of their invention.

Ten children collecting firewood when one of them accidentally struck a landmine with an axe have been killed in eastern Afghanistan, according to Chapahar district governor Mohammad Seddiq Dawlatzai. The victims, all girls, were aged between nine and 13. Two other girls were critically injured and are being treated in hospital.

“An old mine left over from the time of the jihad (against Soviet troops in the 1980s) exploded, killing 10 girls and wounding two others,” Mr Dawlatzai said. However police chief General Abdullah Stanikzai said Taliban insurgents were to blame. When the Soviets withdrew after a 10-year military occupation in 1989, nearly 700,000 mines and more than 15m other explosives left over from the war have been destroyed, according to UN figures. But despite clearance efforts, more than three decades of war have

left Afghanistan one of the most heavily-mined countries in the world. The explosives were laid during three conflicts: in the 1980s war against the Russians, the civil war during the 1990s, and during fighting between the Northern Alliance and the Taliban before they were removed from power in 2001. In the first six months of 2012, 1,145 Afghan civilians were killed and around 2,000 wounded, mostly by roadside bombs. About 30% of these are women and children.

you got mail indiana Jones

tHE University of Chicago has received a package containing a notebook used by indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Received by the admissions department and addressed to Henry walton Jones Jr, officials are trying to find out who posted it as there is no-one of that name at the University. The package contained a replica of a journal by his mentor, university professor Abner Ravenwood, from the movie about the Ark of the Covenant, but without any explanation. The university said of the package’s contents: “The book itself is a bit dusty, and the cover is teal fabric with a red velvet spine.” It had “weathered inserts and many pictures and postcards of Marion Ravenwood, as well as some replica money. It’s clear that it is mostly, but not completely handmade, as although the included paper is weathered all of the ‘handwriting’ and calligraphy lacks the tell-tale pressure marks of actual handwriting.” Admissions counsellor Grace Chapin said it was possibly part of an “alternate reality” game where players plant clues for others. Another was that it could be part of an Indiana Jones promotion, but Ms

Chapin said Lucasfilm insisted it was not responsible for the package. Pictures posted on Tumbler prompted responses. Ms Chapin also said she had never received any kind of mail like this before.

The Chicago Tribune News quoted her as saying: “It’s been wild for us. We’re going to be posting a followup with all the explanations we’ve been getting and what we know later.”

ok, you must start to question your choices in life when legendary party monster Charlie Sheen is the one who helps you out of a mess, but that’s exactly what happened when wacko Lindsay Lohan couldn’t pay a rather large tax bill! The two Looney Tunes met on the set of “ Scary Movie 5” and got on like a madhouse on fire, so when Sheen heard LiLo was in trouble, the two and a half men star heard she owed two and a half (hundred thousand), so coughed up $100,000 to help her out, after all that’s probably what he used to spend on a night out on hookers and his namesake,(Charlie)! “She got shorted and I found out, so I said, ‘Here.’ I’m still waiting for a text to say ‘Thank you.’ Anything, you know?” Apparently Lohan had lost her phone (probably while drunk) and had lost Chucks number but has now expressed her gratitude with flowers, if Charlie’s reputation is anything to go by, I think he has more than flowers in mind!! Here are some of the party legend Charlie sheen’s most awesome quotes!!! 1. “I got tiger blood, man. My brain... fires in a way that is - I don’t know, maybe not from this particular terrestrial realm.” 2. “I am on a drug. It’s called Charlie Sheen. It’s not available because if you try it, you will die. Your face will melt off and your children will weep over

your exploded body.” 3. “I’m tired of pretending like I’m not special. I’m tired of pretending like I’m not bitchin’, a total freakin’ rock star from Mars.” 4. “I’m bi-winning. I win here and I win there. Now what? If I’m bi-polar, aren’t there moments where a guy like crashes in the corner like, ‘Oh my God, it’s all my mom’s fault!’ Shut up! Shut up! Stop! Move forward.” 5. I’m sorry, man, but I’ve got magic. I’ve got poetry in my fingertips. Most of the time — and this includes naps — I’m an F-18, bro. And I will destroy you in the air. I will deploy my ordinance to the ground.” Charlie, you are a god!! Well I’m off for a pint of tiger blood, See you next week for my end of year review!!

beiber: TV and Testicles!! is nowhere safe?? After infesting the charts, youtube and cinemas, pop hamster Justin Beiber will soon be on your prime-time tV screens!! American TV studio ABC are developing a sitcom, yes a sitcom based on Beiber’s childhood before he became famous. Maybe it’s not such a bad idea- he sure makes me laugh! The track, a cover of Barbadian singer Shontelles song “Impossible” is also the fastest selling single of 2012, however that doesn’t make it a dead cert for the Xmas number 1, as bookies are

Bitter and Twisted! Doctor Who (BBC 1, 6pm Christmas day) It wouldn’t be Christmas day without watching the latest Doctor’s Yuletide episode with a belly full of Christmas dinner! This year the 11th Doctor is dealing with a new companion, a spooky house and terrifying looking snowman monsters - I can’t wait!! 21st december- not The end of The world

the End of the world in not nigh, according to scientists at nASA. they have released a video which dismisses the theories that an apocalypse will end the world on december 21st, today! the film, called ‘why the world didn’t End yesterday’, debunks various apocalyptic theories linked to the ancient Mayan calendar. in fact, experts are so positive about the argument that they posted the video more than one week before the event was due and dated it december 22nd. The video says: “If you’re watching this video, it means one thing: the world didn’t end yesterday. According to media reports of an ancient Mayan prophecy, the world was supposed to be destroyed on December 21 2012. But look around you. The whole thing was a misconception from the very beginning.” Director for the Centre for Archaeoastronomy, Dr John Carlson, states that the Mayan calendar did not end

on that date and that the Mayans had never predicted the world would end then. He explained that their calendar simply “rolls over” on Decem-

ber 21 2012. Don Yeoman, head of Nasa’s near-earth comet programme, is also quoted on the video saying no known

asteroids or comets were on a collision course with earth. “Neither is a rogue planet coming to destroy us,” he said.

A Nasa astrobiologist “If there were anything out there like a planet heading for earth, it would already be one of the brightest ob-

jects in the sky. Everybody on earth (would be able) to see it. “You don’t need to ask the Government, just go out and look. It’s not there.”

Sharples in Session By John Sharples

Key To A Fortune

The piano that Sam played in the movie classic “Casablanca” was sold this week for 370 thousand pounds. It was just a normal piano, nothing special.

Casablanca wasn’t thought of as a classic when it was made. It was almost a B Movie. However, the film has forged a place in history as one of the golden classics of all time. I still find it a little bit ridiculous that a grotty old second hand piano can be worth so much money. I must get Elton John to play my stylophone for a few minutes so that I can auction it on ebay for a few grand! It’s a funny old world isn’t it?

Deeper Into The Woods

We all know that times are hard. They’ve been hard for some time. Spain is one of the countries that is suffering the most and cutbacks and tax rises are abundant. I heard recently that cuts have been made to the budget for the national parks in the Canary Islands. The Canarian government, in its wisdom, has decided to cut the budget for the forest areas by over 4,000,000 Euros. That is about three quarters of the budget that they had last year .... gone!

This must be one of the most ridiculous cutbacks in recent history. Just think about it! We had a horrendous year last year for forest fires. We lost a high proportion of our beautiful forests and the work is now on to rebuild those areas that were lost. Cutting the budget by such a high amount can only be very detrimental to the best parts of the island. There are petitions in force that have thousands of signatures and local people are angry about this new cutback. Time will tell, maybe the powers that be will relent ....... however, I think it is highly unlikely.

Boris Has Got It! What A State

They Are In

Have you noticed recently how Boris Johnson keeps pushing all the right buttons? He always seems to have something to say about the most up to date topics.. If anyone tells me that he doesn’t have his eye on David Cameron’s job, I just won’t believe them. The crisis will still be going on when the next election comes around and Boris will be the

only man that will be able to ensure a win for the Tories. He openly says that he is dedicated to his job as London mayor whilst he has a weekly comment on something big in the news. He will be the leader of the conservative party, He will stand for election and it will be a landslide victory and all will be well in the garden. Go on Boris.... you have my vote already!

Opinionated? Me’? Of Course I Am!

Guns seem to rule in the states. It is high time that they changed their laws. Those children and teachers died last week because it is all too easy to own a gun in North America.

We all know how many nutters there are on the Someone said to me this week that I was too opinionated. They were talking about my column in the Tenerife Weekly. My reply was simple. I said that there wasn’t much point in writing my thoughts in a newspaper if I didn’t have any opinion. I don’t report news

roads. Imagine if all those nutters owned a gun! When I saw the film of President Barack Obama speaking to the world as he held back the tears and choked his way through the speech, the true depth of what happened hit me in the face ... full on. The fact that he showed his feelings doesn’t make here, I give my view on things that have happened and I don’t expect everyone to like them. I make no excuse for my opinions and I make no apologies either. I’m sure that some people will avoid my page like the plague and the odd few will turn straight to

him special. What makes him special is the fact that he managed to compose himself as much as he did and make us all realise the intense grief that these kid’s families and friends were feeling. I have always liked Obama. Now, I like him a little more. A politician showing real feeling is a rare thing! it, to see what I’ve chosen to write about this week. (Aren’t mums wonderful). I feel sorry for anyone that doesn’t have an opinion. I feel even sorrier for those who have a problem with expressing their own opinions. As my dad used to say, it’s better out than in!

Weekly Horoscopes Aquarius 20 January - 18 February

Socially, you seem to be having the time of your life over this holiday week. There are opportunities to attend plenty of parties, get-togethers, and other celebrations at this time of year. A romantic relationship may blossom this week. You and your latest love interest could go out together a lot more and discover how much you enjoy each other’s company. At the same time, you may be eager to reflect on your priorities and goals for 2013.

Pisces 19 February - 20 March

Your career seems to be going great guns this week, with plenty of opportunities to get ahead. You may be offered a special deal, perhaps a promotion or an opportunity to renew a valuable contract. It’s also a good time to invite colleagues and professional friends back to your place for some festive fare and fun. They’ll appreciate it, and it could be mutually beneficial. Home and family affairs seem to be happy and fulfilling this week. Your social life is buzzing, too.

Aries 21 March - 19 April

It will be hard to pin you down this week. Your many interests could keep you busy. Your independence is very important to you, and with it comes a desire for adventure and a chance to go to places you’ve never been. Others seem attracted by your high spirits and fun approach to life. Your career zone moves into focus later in the week, so you might be busy hatching a few plans or working out a strategy to achieve an important goal.

Taurus 20 April - 20 May

Rework a financial plan and focus on one important area where you want to make progress. You might be willing to take a risk or gamble. There’s even a chance of a small windfall or an opportunity to close a lucrative deal. Listen to your intuition for the best results. Conflicts could cause trouble in romance. Do your best to deal with difficult or restless personalities. An upbeat outlook helps you keep your cool and come out smiling.

Gemini 21 May - 21 June

Perhaps you can be of help at a time when a friend’s plight, money concerns, or work issues bring anxiety. Schedule a chat, dinner, or party for a chance to talk things over and cheer up your pal. Relationships seem to be positive and upbeat with plenty of opportunities for fun events and good times this week. The focus later shifts to shared resources. The cosmos may be encouraging you to pay off credit cards and sort out debts.

Cancer 22 June - 22 July

Libra 23 September - 23 October

Friends and family may appreciate you getting in touch over this festive week. The focus is on communication, and it seems you have a lot to say, most of which is positive, upbeat, and often amusing. Being willing to send out invitations and get everyone together will kick-start the celebrations. It looks like you’re going to be doing a lot of organizing at home for other family members. Try to delegate some of the work so you can relax, too.

Scorpio 24 October - 21 November

A health issue might require attention. Because of the positive energy around your health sector, you should be able to sort this out in no time. Listen to the advice of your health professional and read about alternative ideas and other possible treatments. Being proactive about your health is a positive move this week. Make an effort to plan an exercise routine and diet that will give you a boost that lasts through the holiday season.

Unless you overindulge or jeopardize your health, this should be a fairly smooth-sailing week. A focus on your money zone suggests you’re in a very generous mood and might decide to splurge on friends and family. Your warm-hearted gesture will be repaid many times over. You may need to kick-start your social life, perhaps by inviting friends over for a get-together or party. It’s important that you get out and mingle.

If you feel generous, treat someone special to a good lunch. You’ll both be on the same page and enjoy each other’s company immensely. Romance is in the air. Over this holiday week you seem set to enjoy a lighthearted relationship - or perhaps more than one. You could be involved in organizing events, office parties, and get-togethers, something you love to do. You’ll also be busy at work, so pace yourself and perhaps get a relaxing massage.

You might want to guard against all forms of excess this week. It might be too easy to go over the top in just about everything, especially promises. Despite this, you seem to be the life and soul of the party and the one everyone wants to be around. Your relationship outlook is very positive. Success is assured concerning efforts to further ties with loved ones. A down-to-earth attitude about employment and physical health is important.

You’ll enjoy the positive, upbeat focus on your home zone over this holiday week, especially as you’re guaranteed to have plenty of fun. Your place seems to be a social centre for friends and family to drop by for a drink and chat. You may even decide to host your work party at your place or invite colleagues over to relax and chill. There’s also a focus on your romance zone, with the potential for one relationship to become intense and passionate.

Although there’s an emphasis on your social life, a desire to spend some time alone reflecting on your priorities may win out. You might also approach this holiday week with a desire to help others make their lives easier and more fun. Rather than attending parties, you might want to get involved in charitable efforts and spend your time making a difference. The focus then shifts to your sign to encourage you to rethink your image and perhaps get a makeover.

Last Minute Christmas Cake

Christmas is just around the corner, and for those of you who didn’t have time or simply forgot, here’s a fail-safe last minute Christmas cake recipe. So if you meant to make a Christmas Cake in early October, feed it weekly with brandy, let it mature, marzipan it two weeks before and ice it one week before the big day – and guess what, you didn’t!

All is not lost. It’s made with a jar of mincemeat, which gives it a beautifully moist texture, and topped with whole nuts which get nicely toasted during the baking (a great topping for those who don’t like it too sweet), but you can also top if with marzipan and icing if you wish! Ingredients For the pre-soaking: 150ml brandy 1 jar (approx 400g) mincemeat 110g prunes, roughly chopped 50g glace cherries, quartered 175g dried mixed fruits

50g chopped mixed peel For the cake: 225g self-raising flour 3 level teaspoons baking powder 150g softened butter 150g brown sugar Grated zest 1 small orange Grated zest 1 small lemon 50g Brazil nuts, roughly chopped 50g mixed chopped nuts 3 large eggs 1½ level teaspoons mixed spice For the Topping: Walnut halves, pecan halves, whole Brazils or any other mixture you like

Christmas Dinner Disasters

“A few years ago, I was having a little tipple before our family and friends arrived. Then I had a few more drinkies, and then a couple more whilst cooking. I was cooking in my Christmas under wear, as we hadn’t got dressed yet. My husband went for a quick snooze before getting ready for our guests. I accidently slipped over a bit of spilt gravy, and knocked myself out. My husband fast asleep didn’t realise, and when my guests started to show, my husband came running downstairs from his sleep let the guests in and then they found me in the kitchen, with my Christmas underwear on, lay flat on the floor, with everything on display -The embarrassment!”

Hazel Price – Adeje

“Being a single mum, cooking dinner, preparing the dinner table and supervising the kids with their new toys was a bit of a struggle

Method Begin the cake a few hours before you want to make it (or even the night before) and simply place all the pre-soaking ingredients into a bowl, mix them all together, then cover with a cloth and leave in a cool place. When you are ready to make the cake, take a big bowl put all the soaked ingredients and the rest of the cake ingredients in it, all in one go. Now, using an electric hand whisk (or a wooden spoon), beat everything together as thoroughly as pos-

sible, which will probably take about 1 minute. Then pour it into the prepared tin, level the top and arrange the whole nuts in rows across the surface – one row of Brazils, one of pecans, and so on. Finally, cover the top of the cake with a double square of silicone paper (baking parchment) with a hole the size of a 50p piece cut in the centre. Then place the cake on the centre shelf of the oven and bake it for about 2 hours or until the centre springs back when lightly touched.

in Christmas 2003. We did have a nice 3 bedroomed semi-detached house in Gloucester. With the turkey joint roasted and the roast potatoes in, I set the oven to high and put the Yorkshire puddings in. Little did I know that some fat had dripped over the oven and set alight? I was tidying up after the kids and helping them find places for their new toys. Suddenly there was a strong burning smell, and to my horror, the oven was in flames. It quickly spread up the rear vent of the oven and before I knew it was having a feast spreading over the kitchen. The fire brigade arrived and managed to contain the fire to just the kitchen and part of the utility room. It took a long time to clean the soot damage, and we had to stay with my parents for some time afterwards. “

Alison - San Miguel

Next week we will announce the winner of our Christmas dinner disasters. The winner will receive a 3 course Sunday Carvery for 2 people at Vivo

A Week in Vivo

39

This week was party week at Vivo!! Vivo Decades show celebrated its first Birthday, and we celebrated in style. This was the second “Special Night”, the first being a much anticipated re-run of the now famous Titanic Night. Special thanks have to go to some of our Bridge Club ladies who more fabulous frocks and even went to the trouble of digging out their tiaras! For our Anniversary Night our guests were amazing and made a supreme effort with black tie and some beautiful dresses. We had commissioned a cake from Sugar and Slice, as usual a spectacular creation was delivered, and the entertainment from Bitter & Twisted, the Decades Dancers and Marc Craig was second to none. Offering a brilliant mix of comedy, singing, music and magic and some great numbers from Marc, featuring John and Bambi our dancers, it was a show unlike any other we had done before, just as it should be. On my travels around the resort I was met by a lovely bunch of people from Poole in Dorset, stand up Steph, Patricia, Danielle and Kenzil. The ladies were enjoying Sangria on our beach and Kenzil was having a whole lot of fun in the pool. They also joined us on Sunday for their lunch at our Carvery; even leaving Aqualand early to make sure they didn’t miss out, lovely to meet you all. One of my favourite guests this week has to be 5-year-old Mason and his family from Darlington. I found Mason playing in our amusement arcade beating up our Coconuts and Monkeys game while he was encouraged by Nanny, Marie and Aunty Dee. We had the privilege of their company again at our anniversary show. I could hear Mason laughing while I was outside the restaurant! It has been a really good fun week, reaching our first anniversary was a real milestone for us all, onwards and upwards to the next year.

THE HOARDER NEXT DOOR CHRISTMAS SPECIAL Channel 4 - 21:00 - 22:00 The hit documentary series returns to Channel 4 with a festive special. Fifty-eight-year-old Pauline is a huge fan of Christmas and boasts a vast collection of inaccessible Christmas decorations; hundreds of tins of out-of-date food (with several freezers the same); and with even seven Christmas trees buried somewhere among the clutter. But this year she is determined to celebrate Christmas in her house with her grandchildren for the very first time. Helping Pauline in her ambition is psychotherapist Stelios Kiosses,

who has 16 years of experience working with hoarders. Stelios offers a ground-breaking approach in tackling compulsive hoarding with a six-week intensive therapy course. Together with straight talking de-clutterers Zoe Steel and Allyson Pritchard, Stelios helps Pauline tackle her hoards and reclaim her home. The Christmas special also features antiques dealer Greg, whose growing collection of ‘repair’ projects has taken over his girlfriend Judith’s house.

Spice Girls’ Story: Viva Forever! Editor Recommends ITV 1 - 20:30 - 22:00

The Spice Girls are undisputedly the biggest, best-selling all-female group ever and their mantra of Girl Power is currently taking London by storm all over again with the launch of new musical Viva Forever! This brand new feature-length documentary will celebrate the Spice Girls’ music and their story as Girl Power is introduced to a new generation through the musical. It will explore the band’s stratospheric rise to fame, featuring exclusive new interviews with all five girls, and with the people who know them best and worked with them along the way. Victoria Beckham says of the band’s success: “It was such a whirlwind, it was really quite overwhelming. And

we were so tired. We were working really, really hard. I mean the record company would have us at the airport sometimes at five o’clock in the morning. We’d fly somewhere, we’d be working all day, we’d get in super, super late, we’d have a couple of hours sleep and then we’d go off again the next day.” Melanie C says: “Everything we touched turned to gold. It was ridiculous.” More than 15 years since they took the pop world by storm, this documentary provides the definitive portrait of a band which sold more than 75 million records worldwide and examines the story of the five girls whose music, look, attitude and success had such a profound, era-defining impact on the 90s and whose influence in British pop culture is still felt.

good night, and thanks to Dos Hermanos even though they did say they should’ve brought their bikinis! Or should that be speedos............it’s not that cold at Tasca!

Pool Superleague this week saw the preliminary round of the cup, the target Bar scoring well over Bar 180 A, as did tasca B over dos Hermanos and the short odds team Hoops against Legends C. Summerland Elite 8 v 2 Bar 180C Elite were far too good on the night and might have won 9-1 but for Mark who probably played the worst shot of his life to miss an easy black in the middle!

of the evening saw Leones B losing out to Bar 180B in a decider. Barracuda Bandits scraped through against camping nauta´s A team. Leones B 5 v 6 Bar 180 B This thriller went right to the wire with Zac and Graham being the unfortunate pair chosen to settle the match, after a tense battle Graham eventually won the match for Bar 180. Bandits won both doubles to make it 4-2. Jack and Simon made it 4-4, Bandits Ray won back the lead 5-4. A last frame for Nauta would have taken it to the decider and after a nervy start by both players Dave found some rhythm, only to let Ray back in, however a foul gave Dave his chance, which he took to give the game to Bandits 6-4. A great night, some fantastic shots, and a Merry Christmas to everybody.

Raff said we were far too weak against this team with Shammy and Sergio as former 1st division players. But also Dave showed us he is more than good enough to promote to 1st. He played a brilliant game against myself. It was a great afternoon of darts. We all enjoyed it. Last Sunday it was again a loss for Belgian Beer Bar against Palms Bar (3 – 5). Maybe it was because I wasn’t there!?:))”Summerlands Shooters 2 – 6 Beesnees Hunnies: “Had a great curry and a great afternoon, thanks guys”. Raff the league president also added unfortunately I have something sad to announce. After 7 and half years playing in the Wild Bull Darts League Cosy Wanderers decided to pull out of the league. Each week they struggled to get a full team together due personal reasons. Tam and his team apologized themselves. They didn’t like to pull out but they said it was the only possibility. “Many thanks guys for all these years. You weren’t only a good team but everybody

liked playing you because you guys know what FUN darts means. I hope to see you back next season.”............If any new team would like to join the WILD BULL COAST FM DARTS LEAGUE and take Cosy Wanderers place, please let us know on 696 792 794. But, we also got good news. Because Sonic (Cosy Wanderers) resigned as committee member we had to find somebody else to replace him but instead of 1 person we asked 3 people to join the committee. From now on we will have a

committee of 7 people: Paul Chipeque, Rob Target, Bubbles Target, Andy La Central, Frank Beesnees, Gert Beesnees and Raf Belgian Beer Bar. With 7 we hope to run the league even better than before. This Saturday BAR ROOD is organizing a charity Darts Event for Marina. All the registration fees are going straight to her to help financially to pay the huge costs she has to pay from her own pocket to beat her cancer. Darts Event start at 4PM, registration fee 5 Euros.

THE SpORTS SCEnE By Colin Kirby

Ho Ho Ho and goal goal goal for Cd Tenerife

foLLowinG a run of poor results this 3-0 home win for Cd tenerife over SS Reyes was like a handful of Rennies after a turkey and christmas pud blow out. it was back to basics for the under fire defence, Las Galletas born Bruno returned to the centre renewing a partnership with tarantino that had been so unyielding early season. Suso led the early charge, he could have scored in the opening seconds but fired wide, a few minutes later visiting goalie Angel had to block another of his efforts. Even at this stage it was clear that

Reyes were a poor side, they struggled to put any good moves together and when they got forward the Tenerife rear guard looked cool and settled. Angel had to rescue his side again with a headed clearance and a diving save but after 40 minutes Chechu put in a quality cross, Bruno was ready with a well placed header for his first senior goal and a 1-0 lead. Javi Vicente had a rare Reyes chance as the break approached but flashed the ball across the home goalmouth. Aridane needed to recapture his form, Angel came between him and an early second half goal, Chechu appealed for a penalty after being upended, and Suso missed a headed chance. The midfield was also up for some re-

demption, Ros was hard working and Cristo had a smile in his boots again. Chechu was always looking for an opening, his ball through to Aridane produced the second goal after 63 minutes, just what the 7,464 crowd wanted. Coach Alvaro Cervera was now able to make some changes, Nico came on for Cristo and later Guillem for Chechu, and they conspired to round off the scoring in injury time, Nico beating the keeper at close range after Guillem had won the ball from Casta単era. Later in the day a shock home defeat for Real Aviles ensured that CD Tenerife returned to top spot, a good result tonight (Friday) at Alcala and they could be sitting pretty going into the festive break.

55 CD Marino Drowning Boxing Day Football At The Deep End With Vitolo And Friends

www.tenerife-weekly.com

Tenerife Weekly - 21st December - 27th December 2012

How to stem the flow of goals, that’s the biggest of several problems facing CD Marino after a 5-2 away loss at Real Madrid C left them cast adrift at the bottom of the table. The team is still creating chances but with the worst defensive record in their group Marino keep seeing games charge away over the horizon. Injuries and suspensions don’t help, on the plus side Raul Barcos returned after nearly two months out injured but Pablo began a five game ban for comments made to the ref in the last home game. De Tomas opened the scoring for Madrid after just three minutes but Marino were level soon after with a Maykel rebound from a penalty. The stalemate held until thee second half when the lethal De Tomas scored his second and within five minutes he completed a hat trick. The fourth goal was a blast from 35 metres, it provoked a swift reply from Marino as Balduino netted from a Dari-

Pedro of Barcelona and Spain, Jeffren from Sporting Club of Portugal, and Spain national coach Vicente del Bosque will be special guests at the annual charity football tournament Amigos de Vitolo on 26 December.

This year the football feast moves south to Adeje football ground (just off the TF 1 motorway going up towards Adeje town) with childrens games from 7 pm and the main triangular competition from 8 pm. Vitolo is a former favourite with CD Tenerife

It may not be their normal game night but CB Canarias love a Saturday evening in La Laguna, their fourth win of the season came with a 74-68 win over visiting team Valladolid.

The fans certainly like it this way, 3,688 of them turned out for an exciting tussle that went all the way to the final minutes. Once again the big guns were booming, Levi Rost with 19 points and Jakim Donaldson with 14 points. CB Canarias took the open-

who now plays for Panathinaikos and each year he gathers together a host of former team mates. Star names this time include former CD Tenerife players Omar (now with Valladolid), and Airam (Numancia). Entry is 5 euros for adults and 3 euros for children.

Another Saturday Special from CB Canarias as cross. Ramirez completed the home tally, the 35th conceded by Marino this season. This Saturday (22 Dec) Atletico Madrid B are the visitors for a noon kick off in Las Americas, then as the players take a break frantic moves will take place behind

the scenes to salvage the season. Coach Almeida will be looking to bring in new players in the January window and President Pepe Barrios will hope to make progress with two Russian brothers he has said are looking to invest in the club.

Future Stars Of Liverpool, Barcelona And Real Madrid In Arona Tournament

The International Blue BBVA Football 7’s is taking place at Estadio Olimpico in Las Americas from 27 to 29 December and features the under 12’s of Liverpool, Valencia, Real Betis, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Sevilla, Espanyol, Borussia Dortmund, Malaga, PSG - Paris St German. Now in its 17th year the tournament has been graced by Fabregas, Torres, and Iniesta in their formative years. Games will be played on special smaller pitches 60 m long and 40 m wide with goals and penalty areas shrinking as well. It’s all about

short, sharp, and skilful football, the opening matches last 12 minutes a half, the semi finals increase to 15 minutes each way, and the grand final becomes 20 minutes per half. Here’s the game times to look out for, several TV channels will be covering the matches, the Christmas generosity carries on with all games free to watch. 27 Dec – 10am to 12.30 and 4pm to 6.30pm, 28 Dec – 10am to 12.30 and 4pm to 5.30pm, 29 December at 11am and 12, grand finals 6pm and 7.30pm. It’s televised and FREE, Liverpool’s first game is on 27 December v Real Madrid at 10.30 am.

ing quarter 20-14 but after that Valladolid hung in close and going into the final minute the home lead was just 70-68. One last big push and that victory was ensured, underlying the steady progress being made in the ACB league after last seasons promotion.
