Editorial 2013 is indeed well underway.
Having now recovered from all of our excesses, we look forward to real life, with little or no interruptions. Well you can until February when the bank holiday season begins in earnest! I have published a full list of fiestas on page 6, so at least you have some warning for when the banks are going to be shut! The news that all European resident drivers are going to have to have Spanish driving licences
Tenerife Weekly - 11th January - 17th January 2013 will no doubt inflame some, but is it really a bad idea? To discover that some nationals have a licence that is valid until they are 100, stand up please Norway, has got to be ridiculous. So perhaps it is a good thing really. The medical test is a glorified eye test and they will test your driving skills on an arcade machine. Not that hard after all? Another horrifying story this week is the plight of the abandoned dog. Many of you have been talking about it on Facebook, it is dreadful that

the law is holding up what should really be an easy task. I have, however, been asked not to announce where the dog is housed, apparently people have been threatening to go and break in to rescue him. It is in the hands of the courts so we must wait. However hard it is. Please do not take the law into your own hands, even if it is in a good cause. See you all next week.

Terry Daniels is an English holidaymaker who was wrongfully accused of smuggling a million pounds worth of cocaine from Brazil to Spain.
Terry’s tale is one of remarkable misfortune. She started out like so many before her, visiting Tenerife on holidays and dreaming of starting a life here. She realized her dream in 1996, found a job and thought she was going to live happily ever after. Although she was no stranger to narcotics, she admits to recreational use in her younger years, they were the last thing that was going through her mind when her then boss asked her to accompany him on a holiday to Brazil in June 1997. What Terry didn’t know was that he had secreted d four kilos of cocaine, worth around one million pounds, into his suitcase. Despite the fact that there was no evidence whatsoever to link her to the haul, the Spanish authorities charged her with drug trafficking and transported her to Salto del Negro jail in Gran Canaria. She was eventually granted bail just days later, but shortly after she had been released, disaster struck. Terry suf-
fered a near-fatal brain hemorrhage and had to be rushed to the nearest hospital. During her recovery, she was found guilty and sentenced to ten years in prison. However whilst waiting to hear when she would considered well enough to be taken to jail, she received a document stating that she had been ‘released without further admissions’. From her local MP who had been campaigning on her behalf. She assumed that her ordeal was over, although in reality, it had only just begun. In 2000, years after her arrest in Spain, Terry moved to Northern Ireland to live with a boy that she had met while she was living in Tenerife. Although she was living in an area that was rife with paramilitary activity, she was still relatively naïve and gave one of her friends a spare key so they could look after her house while she attended her father’s funeral. This proved to be a major error of judgment, as she awoke one morning to the sound of the anti-terrorist police breaking down her door. Several firearms and a pipe bomb were discovered concealed in a cupboard beneath her stairs. Terry was arrested on suspicion of terrorist activity and placed on an all-Catholic
wing of Mughaberry Prison, despite the fact that she had been accused of being a member of a Protestant paramilitary group. Her mother provided her bail and she was eventually found not guilty, and moved back to England. However the Spanish authorities had been notified of her whereabouts and in 2003 Interpol arrived at her front door with an extradition
warrant. ‘Released without further admissions’ did not mean that she was off the hook for the drug trafficking charge. After unsuccessfully attempting to fight her extradition, taking her pleas to the House of Commons, she was eventually extradited to Spain to serve her sentence in 2005. During her time inside, she came into contact with Basque separatist terrorists, murderers and armed robbers; Terry was released in May 2007 and repatriated back to the U.K. to serve the remainder of her sentence in a prison there. She repeatedly pleaded her innocence and was eventually issued with a royal pardon by the king of Spain in December 2008 and finally released in January 2009.
Terry now gives talks at school assemblies to warn youngsters about the dangers of drugs. She says: “The kids today don’t realise the knock-on effects of drugs and being a criminal. It’s not all over when you are released from jail. “I have a criminal record that I will never lose and it’s hard getting a job even though I have an explanation for it.”
She also hopes the book highlights how people can get trapped in foreign legal systems, noting that ‘it wasn’t like I was arrested in a third world country, Spain is in the EU.” Terry’s incredible story “Passport to Hell” is available from Amazon both in print and Kindle versions visit: www.amazon.co.uk/Passport-To-Hell-Terry-Daniels
About going into prison: -
‘As the huge, mechanical gates opened up to let us through, I felt butterflies in my stomach. I was heading into the belly of the beast. Part of me was eager to get inside so that I could go to sleep but the more rational part of my brain was absolutely terrified. Prisons are scary buildings. When you go inside, you feel as if any sense of dignity or individuality that you might once have had is being stripped away from you. I now belonged to the jail.’
First night in prison: -
‘As I lay and tried to get to sleep, the reality of the situation began to hit home. I was in a foreign country, locked up in a place where nobody cared if I lived or died. I still hadn’t been given anything to drink and didn’t fancy drinking shower water. My throat felt like I had gargled a pint of sand and I couldn’t stop shivering from the cold. Was I going to come out of the other side of this a stronger person or would it leave me irreparably damaged? Only I had the power to determine the answer.’
Diary entry from her time in prison: -
‘I can’t talk to anyone about what’s going on. I feel so alone and useless. Please God, I hope someone outside of here is trying to help me because I feel like I’m going mad. I have no rights in here – none at all. Today I feel sick with nerves. I really don’t know how much more of this uncertainty I can take. I’m cold, tired, anxious, nervous, depressed, and worried about everything. It’s been fi ve days since I left England and still no contact with my family or the outside world.’
Before leaving one of the prisons: -
The guards usually turned a blind eye to inmates drinking alcohol because they had normally sold it to them in the first place, but this time they seemed to have had enough and dragged the culprits off the wing. Five minutes later, the two drunkards came back covered from head to toe in bruises and shaking uncontrollably. The screws had taken them to the medical wing, handcuffed them to a hospital bed and beaten them senseless. ‘God almighty,’ I thought to myself. ‘I’m glad I’m getting out of here.’

news On tHe ROCK
The number of unemployed people registered at the public employment offices in the Canary Islands last year increased by 7.28%, reaching a total of 284,915, 19,346 more than in 2011, according to data released by the Ministry of Employment and Social Security. There was a slight decrease during December 2011 in the Canaries, compared to the previous month of November, when unemployment dropped by 1.42%, 4,117 people. San Miguel Ayuntamiento is threatening the removal of municipal funds from those banks that evict those in mortgage arrears in San Miguel. The measure, presented by the mayor, was passed unanimously by the council. Mayor Valentín González said that with the explosion of the economic crisis and the increase in unemployment, it was essential to support families devastated by a situation in which they cannot afford even the most basic necessities. He called for the state to change the legal framework regulating the mortgage market to allow people who cannot pay their mortgages through no fault of their own not to be evicted from their homes. An 18-year-old man suffered severe injuries after being stabbed early Monday morning in the Candelaria plaza. A call from Civil Protection alerted the emergency services that a young boy had been attacked and stabbed in the chest. Ambulance service emergency Canario (SUC) and the Local police and national police corps attended immediately and medical staff stabilized and moved the victim to the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria. According to national police the weapon used was a bottle and that the victim was out of danger after undergoing an operation. The cause of the fight is as yet unknown and the victim has made no statement to police. The Canarian government and the Tenerife Cabildo have been freed from having to pay two and a half million euros to the owners of land over which the four lane access road to Los Cristianos was constructed over seven years ago. The Supreme Tribunal has just annulled a sentence made by the Canarian Superior Justice Tribunal, under which the administrations were obliged to pay the land owners. The road, which links Los Cristianos with the motorway, forms part of the plans for El Mojón, where parks, sports areas, and a shopping center are to be created. Rosa Millan, of El Rosario, has started a hunger strike and is camped outside the headquarters of the Ministry of Housing and Social Affairs of the Canary Islands Government demanding payment promised to her to fix her house after flooding damaged her home in February 2010. A neighbour said: “At first there was interest and a minister even visited the area, but when the media stopped coming, it’s all over.” The last failure, according to her version, occurred on December 22 from the Ministry when she was told to collect compensation for the furnishings of the house, when in fact the counsellor, Ines Rojas, left for vacation and had not signed the relevant Order. The minimum wage for 2013, as published in the Real Decreto 1717/2012, on 28th December 2012, has increased 0.6% from 2012. The new monthly minimum wage is 645.30 Euros, an equivalent of 21.51 Euros per day, and equating to 9,034.20 Euros p.a. For homeworkers or those paid by hourly rate, the minimum wage is 5.05 Euros per hour. Temporary workers will have a minimum wage of 30.57 Euros. The Tenerife based Group of Children and Family General of Police Corps, (GRUMEF), have confirmed that they have found five children who had been reported missing from their protection centres. Agents readmitted three children aged between 13 and 15 years, who had escaped about two weeks ago, they were found in Santa Cruz and Tacoronte, proceeding are underway to reinstatement them to their centres. A fourth child was located and, as he was subject to a search warrant was arrested by the Juvenile Court of Santa Cruz. The fifth child was also found in Santa Cruz. The family of the missing children had filed a missing persons complaint on December 29th to the National Police.

arona – feast of san antonio abad
ThERE is an assumption that to see the ‘real’ Tenerife visitors have to go north, but not so. January kicks off with several Romerias the first of which is the Feast of San Antonio Abad and anyone staying in Los Cristianos or Playa de las Americas is less than twenty minutes from the happenings, which take place in the narrow streets of Arona. “Romerías” are a tradition in Tenerife. In the past these were linked to Catholic saints’ days where the intention was to honour the saint by travelling a difficult route on foot. These pilgrimages were usually done in groups and became social occasions. Today, romerias are still popular social affairs or street parties; they keep religion, tradition, history and culture alive. Tradition is strong in Arona so celebrating is a serious business. The first celebration of the year, the Feast of San Antonio Abad is a rather grand affair with a week of events that end on the Sunday nearest to 17th January. Parking is almost impossible at any of these events, so as soon as you see others park, grab your space then follow the trail of animal droppings. That’s what I said animal droppings because San Antonio Abad is patron saint of animals and you will find more goats, horses, pigs, ferrets and family pets than you can shake a stick at. Many of the animals are dressed for the occasion with ribbons and hats. Their owners have brought them to receive the saints blessing but in all honesty the animals look suitable unimpressed. Residents wearing traditional dress and riding in beautifully decorated wooden carts pulled by oxen accompany the patron saint in a procession through the streets of the town and end up in the
plaza also suitably bedecked in bunting. Food plays an important role in these celebrations, which the local people are proud to share with visitors by tossing Canarian potatoes and eggs from the wagons into the thronging crowd. There is lots of singing and dancing to popular Canarian songs played by local folk groups, which will go on until the wee small hours accompanied by a good supply of beer and wine. Most towns and villages on the island hold a “Romería”, it sometimes feels these are on a weekly basis. Before the end of the month, San Sebastian, the patron saint of Adeje, will be the excuse for throwing another party. If you are in Tenerife, I recommend popping along to an event; ANY event will be great fun. Simply, they are an opportunity to experience Tenerife at its best. To mark the celebration of the Patron Saint and Pilgrimage of San Antonio Abad the following is the event schedule. Friday 11th 22:00 Wizards Dance (tra-
ditional costume/dress). Bring food to share. Venue College Oscar Dominguez, Arona. Saturday 12th 21:00 VI Festival involving Verodal. 23:00 Dance music from Atlantic Passion Orchestra and La Gomera. Venue Plaza del Cristo de la Salud. Sunday 13th 10:00 Crafts Festival Venue Plaza del Cristo de la Salud. 11:00 Mass. 12:30 Traditional procession through the streets of Arona and performances by local folk groups and guests. 16.00 Dance with entertainment from Wamampy Venue Plaza del Cristo de la Salud. Thursday 17th 18:30 Solemn Mass and Procession to the Cross. Accompanied by the band of the School of Music and Dance in Arona. Then spectacular fireworks and chocolates by the Cross of San Antonio. Los Reyes magos give out coal to banks
SEVERAL people affected by the foreclosures on Tenerife mortgages (PAhT) got their own back during the Three Kings parade in Santa Cruz on Sunday. As with tradition, if you have been good all year, the kings will bring you gifts. If, however, you have been naughty, you just get charcoal. So this year los Reyes Mayos made calls to the worst bank offenders and left piles of charcoal in their doorways. The action began at 11.30am outside Bankia in the street Valentin Sanz 9 where several people have set up camp in protest to mortgage foreclosures. The parade then moved onto the headquarters of the sita BBVA and again left them with small piles of coal. The route of the three king’s charcoal run continued towards the Office of Banco Santander, and finished their delivery at the headquarters of the former CajaCanarias, now CaixaBank. According to organizers, the banks with the worst foreclosure records are Santander, BBVA, Caixabank and Bankia. “This year they have been very bad, with more than 526 daily evictions in the country, hundreds of families have been made homeless by effects of the crisis and the banking abuses. It is for this reason Los Reyes Mayos have made a presentation of coal to banking.”
www.tenerife-weekly.com Changes in the law regarding driving licences in Spain are due to come into effect on January 19th this year. In Spain there are an estimated two million residents over the age of 16, who may hold a valid driving license, according to estimates by drivers’ automobile European partners (AEA). Of them, about half are driving with permits which have no expiration date, because in the countries of origin where they were obtained were either awarded for a lifetime or for so long that they are considered to be valid for life. This is especially true in the case of French and German drivers whose licences have no expiry date, for Norwegian drivers, their licences are valid until they reach the age of 100 and English drivers, until they are 70. Up until now, many foreign drivers paid little attention to the Spanish obligation to renew driving licences every 5 or 10 years. They also have to pass a medical examination. But recent changes to the law mean all drivers will have to renew their licences every 5 or

Driving Licence Law Changes ten years regardless of where it was issued. In accordance with the new directive, drivers from EU member countries will have to establish periods of validity to their licences, forcing holders to renew them under the same conditions as national drivers two years from the date in which they acquired residency in the territory. This measure is expected to affect more than one million drivers of Romanian, Bul-
garian, Italian, Portuguese, German, French and English descent, around 6% of the Canarian population. Procedures for foreign drivers will be identical to those of nationals. Every 10 or every 5 years, depending on whether you are above or below the age of 65, have to go to an authorised medical centre with a photograph and undergo a test in order to retain a driving licence. It will also be possible to voluntarily request before
the two years of residency ruling if required. This will ensure that you have a legal driving licence for Spain for 5 to 10 years, depending on your age, without the need for further medical examinations. The authorities are aware that there are thousands of foreign drivers living in Spain who may be unaware of the changes to the law, so AEA has started an information campaign especially for foreign resident foreign drivers in
Spain, www.aeaclub.org, in order for them to avoid having to pay the 200 Euros penalty
which will be imposed on any driver that fails to renew its licence in the specified time.

aged to slip food in to the medium sized cross breed dog via a torn grill at the back of the house but the situation is deteriorating by the day. “We now have a lawyer working on
the case but there seems to be a block in the system and the house is still sealed, all we want to do is to save this dog, the legal people can sort out the house and contents later.”

Dog Left To Rot With The Rubbish By Colin Kirby
The last of 15 dogs trapped in a hoarder’s house of horrors faces a slow painful death as an animal charity battles against bureaucracy. San Francisco de Los Animales sprung 14 of the dogs when their eccentric owner died but the final animal went to ground among rooms full of years of accumulated, decaying rubbish. An Arona court now holds the key to the Santiago del Teide home as the legal process drags on and neither the willing Santiago del Teide council or the 112 emergency services can get in to find and rescue the desperate dog. Judith Noble of San Francisco de Los Animales has seen the appalling conditions inside the home. “The day the Spanish owner died I went in with police wearing masks and protective clothing, the stench was over powering, we managed to remove 14 dogs but rubbish was piled waist high and the last dog had plenty of places to hide. Since then myself and other

Barranco del Infierno To “Open Soon” The natural reserve known as Barranco del Infierno, one of the most visited places on the island of Tenerife after Teide has been closed since 2009. However all indications are that this year it will reopen following an agreement, in principle, between the Cabildo de Tenerife and Adeje Town Council to develop specifications, in order for a company to manage the visits, as it has done previously. “The forecast is that this year it can reopen”, so says the municipal head of the environment in Adeje, Esther Rivero Vargas. She has insisted on the need that both administrations again facilitate the opening of the natural landscape, although she acknowledged the “difficulties” and “complexities” of having to establish competencies and responsibilities on the
abandoned trail in need an urgent regeneration. “I know that the Mayor, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, has an interest in this area but it need to comply with all the guarantees of security so that it can be enjoyed by visitors and tourists, but we will not risk it until the necessary conditions have been reached”, said a Councillor. Landslides close to the famous trail caused the death of a tourist in 2009 and stopped any public access; subsequently there has been an administrative silence that has lasted too long. The security of the Barranco has to correspond to the local administration, the management, regulation, conservation and other technical issues from the Cabildo. “All this entails, as we have already said on several occasions, a process that leads to the same point, to ensure the safety of users”, said the Mayor. An expert from the University of Zaragoza has set out the security measures that have to be met, includ-
ing correct signalling of each zone on the path. The Cabildo had already requested this option and commissioned the Adeje Town Hall to develop this specification. While there is a poster that warns of the danger of landslides at the entrance to the ravine, by Adeje town, many tourists and hikers are still putting themselves in danger

of a fairly steep zone, with increasingly vertical walls to that takes the walkers through the trail, lasting for approximately an hour and a half. “We are aware of the importance of tourism for this spot and we are working to open it as soon as we can,” concluded the Mayor environment in the Town Hall of Adeje.
Carnival Queens
The gala presentation of the candidates for Queen of the Carnaval of Santa Cruz de Tenerife will be with Tenerife actress and singer Silvia de Esteban, at a ceremony on Wednesday, January 16th. This year it will be held at the Plaza of Spain, moving from its home for the past few years in the García Sanabria Park. Juan Carlos Armas, artistic director of the Carnival, wants many of the original features of the festival reinstat-
ed, and going back home to the Plaza helps to represent that.
The festival will present 14 adult applicants, 25 children’s and seven for the across different categories, designated by lots. All participants will walk across a floating walkway installed over the Lake. The Organization promises surprises in the show for which entry is free of charge. The Academy Latin Salsa dancers will be responsible for opening the show with a choreography focused in Bollywood. These professionals, led by Juan González and Lucía Ruiz, opened the show to many plaudits last year, their spectacular per-
formance led to repeating it again for this year’s Gala. Also making an appearance will be some of the groups that won prizes during contests held in 2012. Among them the musical group Cane Sweet. In addition Ni peak Ni short will also have their space in the gala as this year they celebrate the 40th anniversary of the founding of the group in the neighbourhood of “El Toscal”. This will be followed by a music party a prelude of the street party after the contests that will start on Thursday 17th January and go on for about a month featuring various musical groups and Carnival characters.

ARONA LIONS CLUB – Las Galletas, Costa del Silencio We wish all our friends and supporters a Very Happy New Year. On Sunday 13th January we will be having our afternoons entertainment in CC Chaparral Costa del Silencio - opposite main bus stop and below Hiperdino . Times are 2pm to 6pm and our featured artists this month are Pat “Scotty” Wilson, Eddie Hastings, Hollie Bourne and Ged Bolton with Lions compere Derrick. Come along and have a great afternoon with Raffle. Food is available from bars in the area.
Live Arico On Saturday the 16th February we will be having a Fun Dog Show on the car park of the Xtreme Gym in Las Chafiras, from 2pm. As its Carnaval week there is a category for Best Fancy Dress, and after the success of the London 2012 Paralympics, we have a category for best disabled dog. Registration is 5 Euros and there are lots of prizes to be won. The show is in the planning stages but we will have more concrete information next week, or, check our Facebook page. See you there. Live Arico members were once again asked to pack bags in Iceland Las Chafiras for 3 days on Xmas week, which we were more than happy to do after previous years have proved lucrative. As we no longer have the refuge, we thought it fitting to share the wealth with other animal welfare Associations and from the total collected (a fantastic 1,181 Euros) we have already made a 400 Euros donation to SOS Peludos, and 100 Euros to both K9 and Cats Welfare. SOS Peludos are a small Association on the north of the island who help with rehoming as well providing support to refuges. In fact, they collected almost a month’s worth of food for Live Arico back in the summer, and this was just a small way of thanking them for that gesture. In the next few days we will also be making a donation to Esperanza del Sur. Big thanks to Iceland for giving us the opportunity to do this. Although the amount collected was fantastic, just as important to us were the lovely comments and words of support we received. This was heart-warming to say the least. Thanks to all of you for keeping the faith, we won’t let you down. We also sent food last month to the value of 2,887 Euros to our dogs in Fasnia, and we are happy to report that our vet Cesar Bertoldi is coordinating heart worm tests for the Fasnia dogs, which we will be happy to pay for. The 2013 calendars sold more than 220 copies, so many thanks to all who bought one. There is still a hand full left in the shops, if you’re quick, you might just be able to grab one before they are gone.

Sales Have A Disappointing Start The winter sales started officially on Monday but with a disappointing start. Most early risers at the sales are usually youngsters shopping at clothing stores and in sports of the commercial areas of Triana, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and calle del Castillo, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where some establishments had brought forward opening hours in an effort to avoid the queue. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the influx of clients was similar to that of a Saturday and very few locals were queuing before opening time. Several managers of clothes shops in the Triana zone tried to boost sales on a number of products with an increased reduction in price of up to 50%. The most demanded products are clothing, footwear and accessories, which are expected to record better sales than they experienced during the holiday season. The jewellery sector had a “very bad
time,” and compared it to the downfall of the building industry, it has been described as a meltdown situation. According to reports jewellery sales fell by 70% during the Christmas campaign compared to the same time last year. Only stores located in tourist areas have performed fairly well, but the fall in sales many businesses do not know how they will be able to pay their bills, run up during
the previous month or so. It is worrying that the sales period will not benefit business owners as many people do not have the money to spend; they have different priorities at the moment. It has also been pointed out that the removal of the extra pay to officials has been the “worst” measure taken by the central Government due to the on-going effect that it has had for the retail trade.
Tourists Tummys
and Tans!!
By Marc Craig This winter seems to be a particularly bad one for colds, viruses and general illnesses, although I’m normally quite naturally resilient, I myself was struck with a really nasty cold/flu which not only made me feel horrendous but attacked my throat, constantly drying it out for weeks ‘til I thought I needed to change career as I couldn’t see it ever getting better! Thankfully it’s finally on the mend and my voice gets stronger every night, but living on an island with tourists constantly bringing their diseases over with them like hand luggage-most of them leaking from every orifice as they exit the plane (sorry breakfast
readers!!) I thought I’d look into the most common holiday ailments and how to avoid them, (I must stress I’m not talking about Those kind of diseases, although I’m sure there are some younger workers who take customer relations Very seriously and have sent some tourists home with a little something extra they didn’t bargain for!) Let’s face it whether on holiday or resident, if it’s contagious, you’re gonna get it sooner or later!! 1 - Holiday tummy: Mention to someone that you’re thinking of going to India and witness the terror in their eyes as they whisper two dreaded words... “Delhi belly”! Here in Tenerife we have our own version-let’s call it “Paellibelly” or “The Tenerife
Trots”. Although some people are just sensitive to a change in diet, there are ways to avoid it, for example, if you’re a group of 3 who are PR’d into a “restaurant” by Stig of the Dump, you decide to share a roast “chiken “(spelt like this) and you ALL get a leg- you probably bought it on yourself! Although it’s wise to drink only bottled water and not the tap stuff. I love it when I overhear a bloke who’s been drinking local beer at 1 Euro a pint for 12 hours at a bar that last cleaned their pipes as Columbus sailed past, then decides to finish the night with a questionable kebab, and complains the following day that “it was the ice” !!! 2 - The Aeroplane Virus: You’ve probably had to get up at stupid o clock to get your flight, you’re tired, irritable and your immune system is low- then you’re locked in a metal cylinder for 5 hours with 300 disease carriers coughing, wheezing and parping all the way while you breath their second-hand oxygen!! Do what I do, wear a surgical mask, you can buy them for next to nothing at chemists (in some places, you can even get ones with facial expressions and designs etc.), although I’ll warn you,
if you take it off mid-flight for anything... Beware....People stink!! Oh and you may be mistaken for Michael Jackson who is not in fact dead but travelling economy to the Canary Islands!! Alternatively if you don’t like the idea of wearing a mask, put a few drops of tea tree oil, (a natural antibacterial) onto a handkerchief and inhale regularly. 3 - Sunburn: Ok, it’s not contagious but if you have friends and family over and you’ve had to stop watching that box-set of 24 and go to the beach, even long-term residents like me can get caught out. I still find it funny that “Mr McScottish” from freezing Dundee comes to Tenerife for a week and immediately believes he’s got Jamaican blood! “Och I’ll nae need any cream hen”- four hours later he looks like a lobster that’s had a chemical peel!! The sun here is intense, we’re close to Africa and even when cloudy you need to protect yourself from burning. Use the correct factor for your skin type, use after sun and if you do burn, Aloe Vera can ease any discomfort you may feel. Well I hope this has helped some of you enjoy your time on this beautiful island, happy holidays or of you live here....Well Done!!

eL niÑo imf chief Joins telefonica LotteRy
TELEFONICA has announced that it is to hire former IMF chief Rodrigo Rato as an adviser. Telefonica employed Rato, who is 63, will sit on the advisory boards for Latin America and Europe, for his “experience and career path”.
SOME regions of Spain had a spectacular start to 2013. The “El Niño” lottery traditionally held on the Feast of the Epiphany this year was worth 840m Euros. The top prize tickets were sold in Alicante, Leon, Ma-
drid, Murcia and Tenerife. The lottery’s name refers to the baby Jesus, who according to tradition was visited on 6 January by three kings from the Orient bearing gifts. Each lottery tickets cost 20 Euros and the top prize is worth 200,000 Euros. A crowd gathered at one tick-
et office in the Madrid suburb of Alcorcon, where 200 of the winning numbers were sold, and totalling 40m Euros in prize money. The lottery prize comes just days after the Spain’s biggest lottery; El Gordo gave out 2.5 billion Euros in prize money. It comes at a time when much of Spain works through a deep.
“He has no executive function and it is a job that does not require exclusivity,” a Telefonica spokesman said. “He will join in the coming days,” the spokesman added. It is thought that Rato would earn a salary but Telefonica refused to say how much.
Rato previously served as Spain’s economy minister between 1996 and 2004 and then, until 2007, as managing director of the International Monetary Fund. A prominent financial figure in Spain, and a hero of Spanish rights, he has become a target for anger since the col-
lapse of Bankia. In December, last year, he was questioned by a judge on fraud charges relating to the collapse.. He resigned as chairman of the bank in May 2012, days before it was bailed out. It has so far received 18 billion euros in aid from the European Union.

Mainland News In Brief Spanish banking unions say that Santander, (SAN.MC), will cut 3,000 jobs in 2013 following the planned merger with Banesto (BTO.MC). “The bank has not confirmed any numbers, but we think the final figure will be closer to 3,000,” said Jose Miguel Villa, secretary general of the services federation for Spain’s second-largest union (UGT). “This is going to be a tough year,” he added. In December 2012 Santander announced it would fully absorb its Banesto brand to cut longer-term costs Nationalised Spanish lender Banco de Valencia, bought for 1 euro by the country’s third-biggest bank, La Caixa , will cut more than half its workforce, according union UGT. Banco de Valencia plans to dismiss 890 employees.
A man has died from his burns after setting himself on fire, reportedly because of money problems, hospital sources said. The man, aged 57, set himself on fire in Malaga and died in the Virgen de Rocio hospital in Seville, where he had been taken for treatment. El Mundo newspaper cited a witness to the incident saying the 57-year-old man was unemployed and had money problems. A second man aged 63 was in the same hospital after also setting himself on fire in Malaga, in what police said appeared to be a suicide attempt. Police gave no details of the identity of the second man, whom police found near a burning car. Hundreds of thousands of Britons with holiday homes in Spain risk being the worst hit as property prices continue to plummet. Analysts RR de Acuna & Asociados, one of the country’s leading economic consultancies have warned values could slump by another 50%, with the biggest falls in coastal areas full of apartments and villas owned by U.K. residents. Swathes of half-built or unsold holiday homes along the Mediterranean coast will simply have to be demolished as developers cannot sell them, even at rock-bottom prices. Predictions indicate the crisis could stretch more than a decade – even up to 15 years – affecting up to 400,000 Britons who live or own homes there. Group vice-president Fernando Rodriguez de Acuna said: ‘The market is broken. In places like Castellon, near Valencia, where over-development was mad, banks are not financing anything and there is a high probability these properties will never be sold. They will have to be knocked down. ‘Banks are offering huge discounts and nobody is calling. Marbella has already fallen by 50 per cent and prices are going down and down Police in southern Spain are investigating the death of a six-year-old boy who was run over by a float during a traditional Three Kings Parade festive parade. Local reports said the boy had approached the float during in Malaga to gather sweets which are often thrown to crowds of children. The parade continued but the city has declared two days of mourning. Carrefour is investing in its Spanish operation with store openings and a re-launch of private label ranges planned for 2013. The France-based retailer will add 100 stores to its Carrefour Express store network, and with the planned addition of five Carrefour Market outlets. The group is expanding its Carrefour Express format, with recent openings of new stores in Soto del Real, Madrid, with 42 employees, and Pinares de Murcia, with 16 staff. Carrefour claimed sales increases in the country in the third quarter, despite the difficult economic climate, mostly due to relaxed Sunday opening hours. The two hundred and forty cleaning staff at Alicante’s general university hospital, completed their thirteenth day of strikes day, and on Tuesday they completed a twenty four hour sit in to back their protest, which the president of the company committee, Francisco Garcia, says will only end when they receive their salaries. Common areas in the hospital soon became dirty, and rubbish accumulated, while only minimum services were carried out. The conflict began two weeks ago, over problems with the late payment of salaries by the hospital’s cleaning company.

King’s 75th Birthday Speech
King Juan Carlos of Spain gave a rare television interview to mark his 75th birthday. He expressed his “hurt” at the number of young Spaniards forced to emigrate by economic difficulties. The interview came after what was a difficult year for the Spanish royal family.
King Juan Carlos had to apologise for elephant hunting in Botswana during the financial crisis, and while his son-in-law is still at the centre of a corruption investigation. “One of the things that is most concerning and is in the mind of many Spaniards is the lack of jobs that leads millions of families to be unable to live with dignity and forces young people to leave Spain to look for work,” he said, adding that the situation “pained him”. “It hurts me a lot,” he told Spanish national television station TVE. The interview comes at a time when the popularity of the royal family is in decline, the very fact that the king agreed to the interview shows that there is some
concern about the future of the royal family. Republicanism is still a strong force in Spain; it is only 40 years since the end of Francisco Franco’s dictatorship. The king reminded his audience how he had smoothed the transition to democracy and how far, during his 37year rule, the country had come. “I would like to be remembered as the king who has united Spaniards, that with him democracy and the monarchy have been
recovered,” he said, adding that “liberty” was a word for which he hoped he would be remembered. The king failed to make any mention of the corruption scandal in which his sonin-law, the Duke of Palma, is embroiled. He has been accused of misusing funds donated to a foundation he administered. He denies the allegations. The King did not speak about his highly criticised trip to Africa. Two weeks ago, King Juan
Carlos appealed to Spaniards to have confidence in themselves and their country in his annual Christmas speech. “We cannot ignore that there is pessimism, and that its effects are felt in the social climate we are living in,” he said, after a year of mass street demonstrations and two general strikes. Of all the measures to combat the crisis, he said “the main stimulus that will get us out of this crisis is called confidence”.
Pet Travel Safety Campaign
Animal Express, a pet courier business has joined forces with the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and Britain’s Road Haulage Association (RHA) to set up a trade association that will improve current legislation on moving pets around the world.
Calls for changes in current legislation have been made following the deaths of some pets during their transportation between Spain and the UK. One animal died whilst under the care of Pet Taxi, a company based in Torre del Mar-based. Seven other pets were handed over to the RSPCA upon arrival in the UK. Dan Coughlin, Animal Express owner, who has worked in the freight business for more than 20 years, said: “The ‘other species’ rule that currently cover dog and cat transport are wholly inadequate. Certain companies are actively ignoring legislation such as the five to one rule, which states there must be one person
present for every five animals. We need to make sure all companies are following the rules.”
DEFRA has warned expats in Spain to check all pet transport companies follow the correct procedures.

PRINCE Felipe was guest of honour along with the Catalan leader Artur Mas for the inauguration of Spain’s first high-speed rail link between Barcelona and Figueras.
Spain’s rail network ended its isolation from Europe three years ago but this express line marks a new frontier in international travel, reducing the journey time to less than one hour. Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said “This is something more than a sim-
ple railway. We are in front of one of the biggest and most ambitious infrastructure projects ever undertaken in our country. This is strategic infrastructure which is going to be a new hub of prosperity for Catalonia, the rest of Spain and the whole Europe.” Now it will soon be possible to take a fast train from London in the morning, connect in Paris then get to the Catalan capital in plenty of time for dinner. Further improvements are expected to cut journey times making it soon possible to travel from Britain to Madrid in a single day.

private health Demonstrations
ThOUSANDS of doctors and health workers staged a protest in Madrid to show their express discontent with plans by the regional government for the privatization of healthcare services and further austerity cuts. Demonstrators took to the streets in central Madrid carrying banners saying, “healthcare is up for sale so politicians can make money.” They were blowing horns and banging drums, while others were wearing white scrubs. The demonstration is the latest in a round of events described as a ‘white tide.’ The regional government in Madrid plans to privatize six hospitals and 27 of the 270 health centres, insisting that the sell-offs and cuts are necessary to secure health services during the recession. Healthcare managers in the Madrid region are resigning over the plans and On Tuesday
322 managers from more than half of the centres tendered their resignations, to take effect when the privatisation takes place. One of the protesters, Lucia Munoz said, “I don’t think it’s fair that the taxes we all pay are going to go to private companies to provide our health-
care. Those companies have to make a profit, so they are going to cut whatever they can” including jobs and budgets. That is going to affect the quality of healthcare.” On December 20, 2012, Spanish lawmakers voted for further cuts in the 2013 budget, which cut spending for health-
care and education and reduces pensions. The fourth largest eurozone economy, Spain must lower its deficit to 4.5% in 2013 and 2.8% in 2014. Economists say the targets will be difficult to meet with poor prospects for the country’s economic recovery.

Art + Architecture = Fine Jewellery
Using inspirations from Picasso and Braque, Gris, Dalí, and Miró, Madrid-based Artency blurs the lines between art and accessories, pop culture and luxury has created the first online-only art jewellery shop. Artency is the partnership of art deco jeweller Luis Feliú de la Peña and Silvio Dulinsky, who identifies himself as “a business guy who decided to start my own business and
the Internet is something that I like very much.” The pair decided to work in the luxury field, since, “all the luxury sector is pretty much offline,” Dulinsky says. The idea started as selling jewellery designed by contemporary artists and architects. “After a few months, we had this nice line-up of artists who love jewellery and design,” Dulinksy says. “We started only with artists, and we developed the jewellery with them. This process takes about four or five
months, especially for artists using these materials or working with jewellery for the first time. When we started investigating this area, we found some excellent jewellers who made exceptional art, one-of-akind jewellery,” including Karl Fritsch, whose Artency pieces can sell for more than four thousand euros. This high price comes with the facts that “he works only with pure gold,” and that he is “a reference in art jewellery.” With a line-up of jewellers’,
13
they have six designers from around the world, “I’m really trying to reach an international market,” says Dulinksky. Most of their customers come from the U.S., the U.K. and Germany, which is unusual for a Spainbased company. “We are not traditional luxury,” Dulinsky says. ” Most people in Russia and China, they are looking for traditional brands. Dolce and Gabbana and Gucci, or Spanish brands like Loewe. We are selling to a different market — those that don’t care about the brand so
much as the history of the product.” This is why the next phase, being released later this month, is to offer pieces
from jewellers that are known for their art jewellery, with both one-of-a kind and limited editions. Since the artists are more accustomed to their media, the time dedicated to the design and production process should decrease significantly. It also brings well-recognized names from the industry to their website with products from five more designers to be launched later this month, just in time for jewellery’s main holiday: Valentine’s Day. Dulinksy describes other online art and jewellery dealers as merely appendices to their much more focused offline businesses. However, for Artency, “This is our core business,” he says. “Our vision is to be the reference in art jewellery online. Not just in style, but in business, the jewellery imitates art. “The art sector used to be completely offline, and now there are several start-ups offering artwork over the Internet, and that’s what we are trying to do with art jewellery.” http://www.artency.com/

hotel reDunDAncies in luXury hotel chAin PARADORES de Turismo, which is responsible for running the iconic chain of 94 government-run luxury hotels, has confirmed that it would make 350 staff redundant and close 25 of its less-profitable hotels for between two and four months during low season. The Parador in Puerto Lumbreras in the Murcia region is to close permanently and 15 of the chain’s restaurants will be closed. The company’s first closure plans would have resulted in seven of their hotels closing permanently and more than 600 of its 4,400 staff being laid off but Paradores de Turismo reached a new agreement following a strike by it workers and negotiations with unions in
December. The company said the new plan was effective as of January and would help the company ‘face the immediate future from a perspective of change and recovery’. Some of the hotels are
located in some of Spain’s most beautiful and historical buildings, including former palaces, castles, monasteries and mansions, scattered across the country. The chain was established by the Spanish government to
help pay for the upkeep of the buildings and boost the economy of smaller towns and villages. But Paradores de Turismo announced a loss of over 100m Euros last year, after occupancy rates fell from 70% in 2007 to 52%
in 2012. Only a handful of the company’s hotels actually make a profit, including one in a restored 15th-century convent inside the walls of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, and is usually booked-up
months in advance. A spokesman for the union said: “Although the agreement reached is not what all the workers would have wanted, it will significantly reduce the trauma of job losses.’

UK Set for Russian Wintry Fortnight
The UK faces two weeks of seriously wintry weather as icy winds and snow make their way over from Russia. The unusual mild start to the year will give way to temperatures as low as minus 5C, down to an area of high pressure which is developing over Scandinavia. Cold air is moving in from the Baltic and western Russia and will clash with the milder air and Atlantic weather systems coming in from the west. The UK is directly underneath. Chief forecaster at the Met Office, Paul Gundersen, said: “All parts of the UK will see cold weather setting in over the weekend. We can expect sleet and snow showers to affect eastern areas at times, but with a battle developing between the cold air in the east and mild air pushing in from the west, no one should be surprised to see sleet or
15
snow over the weekend and next week.” Sky News weather forecaster Isobel Lang it was “too early to give details on how much snow will fall and where. This is complicated by the fact that we are in the zone between cold air to the east and milder air to the west and at times one will become more dominant than the other.” Snow is expected in the north before some snow showers reach southern and eastern areas this weekend. The Met Office said the wintry weather could last until around January 23 when the outlook is less certain. Ms Lang said: “As wet weather spreads east across England and Wales on Saturday, some snow is likely, especially over hills but perhaps down to low levels later as the front clears south eastern areas. A chill east wind will feed in further snow showers to eastern Britain during Sunday, although western parts should be dry and bright. A covering of snow is likely over higher ground but some may settle at low levels too. Temperatures on Sunday may only reach around 2C to 4C at best.”
Girl Guides Oath Changes
Girlguiding UK are considering removal any mention of God or the Queen from their oath. The Girl Guides, a voluntary organisation which has more than half a million members, has launched an online page to discuss changes to the pledge all Guides take when they join, known as the Promise. The organisation says that it is necessary due to an increasing number of girls and volunteers do not identify with the current oath. “The Promise is guiding’s beating heart - it is the core expression of values and the common standard that brings everyone in guiding together” says a statement “Over the past few years we have heard from more and more girls and leaders who struggle with the wording, particularly in interpreting what it really means to girls today. Girlguiding UK is committed to retaining a Promise that is in line with its original principles, but we know it is crucial that girls and young women understand and believe in the words they say.” Guides promise to “love my God” and “serve the Queen and coun-
Olave Baden-Powell centre try”, as well as do their best, help other people and keep the Guide law. The Online consultation asks readers to express their preferences for alternatives such as “do my duty to God”, “be true to a higher ideal” and “serve the highest truth
and love faithfully at all times”. Changes to the current mention of the Queen include “serve the Queen and my country”, “engage myself with responsibility in the community I live in” and “be true to my country”. Reports state that the move to-
wards a new oath is seen as an attempt to attract a new type of volunteers to lead the Guides. In 2012 over 50,000 girls were on waiting lists to join the 102-year-old organisation due to a lack of trained leaders. In December the Scout Associa-
tion announced it had launched a consultation to see if members would support an alternative Scout Promise for those who felt unable to pledge a “duty to God”. The Guides’ consultation, which is open to members and non-members, is due to close on March 3.

Oscar Nominations Announced
Lincoln leads the way in Oscar nominations for the 85th Academy Awards, to be held in Los Angeles on Sunday February 24. Daniel Day-Lewis is the leading British hope to win. His ‘best actor’ nomination is just one of 12 gongs the historical drama about the former US president is in the frame for. The nominations were announced by MacFarlane and Spiderman star Emma Stone. Day-Lewis, 55, who has joint UK and Irish citizenship, was immediately named as favourite for what could be his third victory in the category. The shortlist also includes Les Miserables star Hugh Jackman, Denzel Washington, Joaquin Phoenix and Bradley Cooper. Brit Naomi Watts has also received a nomination, for her role in Impossible she is in the best actress category, alongside 85-year-old Emmanuelle Riva who could become the oldest ever winner, for Amour, and with nineyear-old Quvenzhane Wallis,
for Beasts Of The Southern Wild, potentially the youngest. Les Miserables, directed by The King’s Speech filmmaker Tom Hooper, is in the running for best picture but Hooper failed to get a nomination in for ‘best director’, which he won in 2010. Also nomi-
nated for best picture are Ben Affleck’s Argo, a film set during the Iran hostage crisis, Beasts Of The Southern Wild and Quentin Tarantino’s western Django Unchained. Life Of Pi, Amour, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty complete the shortlist.
New York Ferry Crash
Transport officials from New York will investigate a recent overhaul to see if it played any part in the ferry crash that injured around 70 passengers. The Seastreak catamaran crashed into the dockside in Lower Manhattan, full of commuters, on Wednesday during the morning rush hour. The vessel apparently landed hard as it was trying to dock. CCTV Images show a corner of the ferry ripped open. Last summer the ferry’s water-jet propulsion system was replaced with a new system of propellers and rudders to save fuel costs and cut CO2 emissions.
The hull was reworked, and the boat was made around 15 tons lighter. The ferry has a top speed of around 35 knots, or 40mph. Seastreak spokesman Bob Dorn, has asked whether the work had affected the ferry’s steering or caused pilots any problems. He said it would be up to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to determine if the new equipment played any part. One passenger, who had been waiting for the ferry saw the impact, she said that a Seastreak employee had told her that the boat’s captains had complained lately about its manoeuvrability. “He was telling me that none of these guys like this boat,” she said. “It was coming in a little wobbly. It hit the right side of the boat on the dock hard, like a
bomb.” A spokesman from the city’s Office of Emergency Management confirmed that there had been 326 passengers and crew on-board at the time of the crash. Many were taken off on backboards for medical evaluation, with their heads and necks immobilised. Two passengers were reported to be in a critical condition. The crew and the captain were all tested for alcohol and drug and will be interviewed by the NTSB. The route has a history of accidents. In 2003, 11 people were killed when a Staten Island Ferry crashed into a city pier after its pilot passed out at the wheel. Three people were badly hurt and about 40 injured when the same ferry hit the same pier in 2010 mechanical problem were blamed.
Adele’s nomination for best original song is up against Oscars host Seth MacFarlane, who is nominated for Everybody Needs A Best Friend from the film Ted. The nominees also include Suddenly from Les Miserables, which was co-written by London journalist Herbert Kretzmer.
Hollywood veterans Alan Arkin, Tommy Lee Jones and Robert De Niro have all been named in the supporting actor category with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Christoph Waltz. Anne Hathaway’s performance in Les Miserables saw her nominated for supporting actress along
with Amy Adams, Lincoln star Sally Field, Helen Hunt and Jacki Weaver. There was disappointment for Dame Judi Dench and Dame Helen Mirren. They missed out on nominations for their performances in Skyfall and Hitchcock respectively.

british businessman Jailed for iran Deal
BRITISh businessman Christopher Tappin, from Orpington in Kent, who was extradited to the US to be tried for trying to buy missile parts and resell them to Iran, has been jailed for 33 months US District Judge David Briones said he would recommend that the Department of Justice approve any request by Tappin to be transferred to the UK. he was also fined $11,357 (£7,089). The 65-year-old tried to buy missile batteries from undercover US agents with the intention of exporting them to Iran without obtaining a licence. “These batteries are used to make Hark missiles operational and Tappin admitted that he submitted false shipping documentation to circumvent US export control regulations,” said US attorney Robert Pitman. The batteries, a special component of the Hawk Air Defence Missile, are designated as a defence article on the US Munitions List and require a licence or written authorisation from the US
State Department for export from the US. Outside court, Tappin, said: “I have accepted the plea agreement offered by the US government and confirmed by the court today. As part of the agreement both the US government and the British government have offered to support my repatriation to Britain at the earliest opportunity. I look forward to returning home to be near my friends and family and especially my sick wife.” The former president of the Kent Golf Union had fought extradition for two years until being denied a petition to take the case to Britain’s Supreme Court. Tappin then reached a plea agreement that opened the door for him to serve part of his sentence in Britain. His wife, Elaine, said at the time she hoped he would have “the mental fortitude to cope with whatever lies before him in the months and years to come”. Tappin pleaded guilty to one count of aiding and abetting the illegal export of defence articles on November 1, 2012. He admitted that from December 2005 to January 2007, he knowingly aided and abetted others, including his Cyprus-based business asso-
ciate Robert Frederick Gibson and Robert Caldwell in an illegal attempt to export zinc/ silver oxide reserve batteries to Iran. Tappin’s extradition to the US in February 2012 touched a nerve in Britain, where many believe extradition ar-
rangements with the US are unfairly weighted against British citizens. Elaine, who suffers from chronic illness Churg-Strauss Syndrome, was unable to attend the court in Texas. Following the sentencing, she said: “Now I can begin to see light at the
end of this long dark tunnel - but remain frustrated that Chris’ extradition was granted in the first place “Being returned to a US prison will be dreadful for him. He is learning to live with the regrets it is a chastening experience after a 45-year unblemished
business career.” Gibson, a British national, pleaded guilty in April 2007 and was sentenced to 24 months in prison. Caldwell, from Oregon, was found guilty in July of that year and received a 20-month sentence.

Chas Hallett said: “The Audi A3 Sportback mixes excellent refinement and an accomplished driving experience with easily the finest cabin quality ever seen in a small family hatchback. It sets a new benchmark and it is keenly priced, a combination that makes it a worthy Car of the Year.” British-manufactured Ford vehicles collected four awards at the ceremony at the Grosvenor House on London’s Park Lane. The Fiesta won the Supermini category, the Mondeo was named as Best Family car, the estate model won a similar award, and the Focus ST-1 grabbed Best Hot Hatch. The Ford Focus was the best-selling car in the UK last year, with 109,265 registrations were lodged with the DVLA. Mr Hallett said: “Ford really is building great cars. Its cars look good, are great to drive, reliable and make great buys.” Ford has, however, has carried out a review
of production capacity, which has resulted in hundreds of job cuts in Europe and Britain. Analysts still say that European production facilities outstrip demand for its products. What Car? Awarded three trophies to BMW, for its X3 SUV, the 320d ED automatic for executive and the best open-top model was
won by the Mini Roadster Cooper S. Porsche won the Sports Car of the Year award with the Boxster 2.7, and the Seat Alhambra was given the MPV award for the 3rd year running. Audi’s TT again proved its success by winning best coupe for the 7th time. British-built Ranger Rover was announced as
the winner of the title of Luxury Car of the Year, while the Volkswagen Up held on to its title as City Car of the Year. Recent figures show car registrations in 2012 were at a four-year high, although around 50% below what they were before the recession.

LILY Allen has become a mother for the second time after giving birth to a baby girl. Allen, real name Lily Cooper, and her husband Sam are reported to have named her Marnie Rose. She will be little sister to their first daughter, now aged just 14 months called Ethel. Friends and fans have been bombarding the star with congratulations. Cooper, who now works under her married name, replied: “Quite overwhelmed by all the well-wishing going on. Thank you everybody.”
TOKYO’S first auction of the year at the Tsukiji fish market featured a record breaking 222kg Bluefin Tuna which sold for the Japanese equivalent of £1.1m, nearly three times the previous record.
The fish meat is highly prized for use in sushi and sashimi. The best meat is the pink fatty Bluefin, called o-toro, which can sell for £15 apiece in Tokyo sushi. The Japanese eat 80% of all Blue-
fin tuna caught worldwide. Highest bidder Kiyoshi Kimura, president of Kiyomura Co. which owns the Sushi-Zanmai restaurant chain, said “the price was a bit high,” but that he wanted to “encourage Japan”. He served the fish to customers the next day. Environmentalists are warning that stocks of the fish are being quickly run down as the call for sushi increases. “Everything we’re hearing is that there’s no good news for the Pacific
Bluefin,” said Amanda Nickson, the director of the Washington-based Pew Environmental Group’s global tuna conservation campaign. “We’re seeing a very high value fish continue to be overfished.” Stocks of Bluefin caught in the Atlantic and Mediterranean have dropped by 60% between 1997 and 2007 due to overfishing and lax quotas. Although there has been some improvement recently, experts say the outlook for the tuna is still fragile.
Cooper had a string of chart hits including Smile and The Fear before announcing she was retiring from the music business. But after launching a career in the fashion business, she is said to be working on a new album. When she was asked if she was managing to have a rest after the birth, she responded on Twitter: “Yeah right. Can’t uncross my eyes. Unique mixture of tiredness
and strong painkillers.” She hinted that the birth was imminent with an online message earlier in the week in which she suggested she was eager to start the labour by tucking into spicy food. “Third curry this week .... Nothing,” she wrote. She also said her other half was helping with the preparations for the birth, tweeting: “My husband is currently making me a Pantera mix cd to take to the birthing suite.”

maLaLa Leaves hospitaL
15-YEAR-OLD Malala Yusufzai who was shot in the head by the Taliban in Pakistan last October and flown to Britain for specialist treatment, has been released from Queen Elizabeth hospital. Her doctors have said that she will continue her rehabilitation at her family’s temporary home in the West Midlands before having cranial reconstructive surgery in the next month. Dr Dave Rosser, medical director at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Malala is a strong young woman and has worked hard with the people caring for her to make excellent progress in her recovery. Following discussions with Malala and her medical team, we decided that she would benefit from being at home with her parents and two brothers. She will return to the hospital as an outpatient and our therapies team will continue
to work with her at home to supervise her onward care.” Malala has been leaving the hospital on a regular basis on “home leave” spending time with her father Ziauddin, mother Toorpekai and two younger brothers, Khushal and Atul. She was shot on a school bus in the Swat Valley area for campaigning for women’s rights and their right to an education. The bullet entered just above her left eye and ran along her jaw, “grazing” her brain. It was later removed by surgeons in Pakistan before she was flown to the UK. It is thought likely that her family will be granted permanent residence in the UK after her father got a job with the Pakistani consulate in Birmingham. Mr Yusufzai has been appointed education attaché for three years, with the option to extend for a further two years afterwards. Both he and his daughter have had threats made against their lives by the Taliban since the shooting.
neW “Flying Zorbing Death in Frog” DiscovereD Russia
A NEW species of flying frog which can glide from tree to tree using its webbed hands and feet as parachutes has been discovered. Despite living in a lowland forest only 90km from Vietnam’s largest city, ho Chi Minh, the bright green 10cm frog has hidden itself from the world until now. It lives high up in the trees and only comes down to the ground to breed in puddles. Dr Jodi Rowley, from the Australian Museum in Sydney who first spotted the frog sitting on a log, said: “To discover a previously unknown species of frog I typically have to climb rugged mountains, scale waterfalls and push my way through dense and prickly rainforest vegetation. She has named the frog Helen, after her own mother. “The discovery of a new species so close to a busy area
Father-of-two Denis Burakov, 27, broke his back and spine in a zorbing accident when the out-of-control ball, he was strapped into hurtled down a mountain and over a cliff edge at the Dombai ski resort in southern Russia. of human activity shows we really don’t know what’s out there still in this part of the world and demonstrates why threatened lowland forests need conservation.” The large frog was first found the biologist in 2009
but it has taken until now for scientists to confirm that it is a new species. The biologist has been exploring forests in southern Vietnam since 2006 and in 2008 discovered the so-called vampire flying frog, known for its fangs.
His friend, Vladimir Shcherbov, 33, who was also in the ball with him, escaped with minor cuts and bruises. The accident was filmed by friends of the pair. Footage shows them climbing into the ball, and one friend can be heard saying: “Denis, you’ll be like Jackie Chan in the Armour of God movie.” Two members of resort staff then pushed the orb down the piste, and another staff member
was on hand at the bottom to stop it. As it drew close to the watching crowd it suddenly veered left, and a man’s voice can be heard saying: “Oh ****, it’s gone in the wrong direction again.” He is he heard screaming to “hold it” but then said: “It’s OK, it’ll stop by itself.” But the ball sped out of control and disappeared over a cliff edge. It travelled for nearly a mile before stopping on a frozen lake. Russian crash investigators released a statement saying: “For unknown reasons the ball deviated from the route and fell into the Gonachkhir gorge, a slope of 70-80 degrees.” Authorities are interviewing eyewitnesses and relatives of the victims, as they decide whether to launch criminal proceedings. Zorbs have been adopted as a symbol for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Colleen’s Sister Dies At Home
The teenage sister of Coleen Rooney has died at home. 14-yearold Rosie McLoughlin had suffered from Rett syndrome, a rare genetic disorder and died at her home in Liverpool surrounded by her family, the spokesman said. A statement issued on behalf of Coleen, her husband, Wayne, and the rest of Rosie’s family, said they had been left heartbroken
by the teenager’s death. The family thanked everyone at Alder Hey Hospital and Claire House Children’s Hospice, including “the many doctors, consultants, nurses, helpers and friends who all worked so hard and tirelessly to help make Rosie’s life better. ”She was such a strong little girl and an inspiration to us all,” the statement said. “We shall cherish forever the memories we have shared and the love she showed us each and every day of her life.” Rosie’s illness inspired

Coleen and her Manchester United star husband to raise funds for sick, disadvantaged and disabled children. The couple asked guests at their wedding that instead of gifts they wanted donations to Claire House Children’s Hospice and Alder Hey. Rett syndrome is a neurological disorder that affects just one in 12,000 females, according to the NHS. It causes severe physical and mental disability that begins in early childhood.
McCririck Sues Lucky Chinese Channel 4 Wedding Day
The Mandarin for January 4th, 2013 sounds very similar to the phrase “I will love you all my life”. Thousands of couples chose the day to marry in registry offices across China, hoping that the auspicious date will bring them good luck in their relationships.
Racing pundit John McCririck is looking for £3m in damages from Channel 4 claiming he was sacked by the station because of his age.
The former presenter aged 72, was one of several of faces axed by the channel after it gave IMG Sports Media a production contract. The previous agreement was with Highflyer. McCririck complained at the time of the decision when it was announced last October, he blamed ageism.
He has issued a statement outlining his case: “Channel 4 and production company IMG Sports Media were yesterday each served a letter before action for age discrimination. After 29 years with Channel 4 Racing, on a rolling annual contract, I have been sacked without any consultation or cogent explanation. I am 72. For loss of future earnings, unfair career damaging, public humiliation, stress and mental anguish, I will be seeking £500,000. Ageism is illegal. For tens of thousands of employees it has become the feared scourge
of our society. This litigation should prove to be a watershed. There’s no upper limit to the amount of damages employment tribunals can award under the Equality Act 2010. I am seeking a further exemplary, punitive £2.5m, part of which will be donated to charitable organisations helping to prevent negative prejudice in the workplace.” McCririck is represented on a no-win no-fee basis by employment and sports law specialist solicitor Stephen Beverley, of the London West End Cavendish Legal Group.
A reported 10,000 couples tied the knot in Beijing, and many more turned up without an appointment. Extra government staff had to be drafted in to cope with the increased demand. In Hong Kong, the city’s five marriage registries had been fully booked since September last year, and 558 ceremonies took place. The South China Morning Post reported that while the date was popular, demand was eclipsed by December 12, 2012 when 680 couples married, and November 11 2011 when 1,002 couples married. Dates with matching days, months and years are thought to bring good fortune. More than 10 million weddings take place in China every year, and those numbers increase on dates seen as numerically important.

boWie: finaLLy a neW aLbum
AFTER waiting for ten years, David Bowie has finally released a new single and is bringing out a new album The single, Where Are We Now?, is available on iTunes, while his 30th studio recording, The Next Day, is available as a pre-order, the album’s release is scheduled for March. The single was released for Bowie’s 66th birthday, as his official website says, a “timely moment for such a treasure to appear as if out of no-
where”. Where Are We Now? produced by long-term collaborator Tony Visconti, was written by Bowie and was recorded in New York. The single is released alongside a video directed by Tony Oursler which harks back to Bowie’s time in Berlin. He lived there between 1976 and 1979 due to his interest in the burgeoning German music scene. Bowie worked with Brian Eno while sharing an apartment in Schoneberg with Iggy Pop. The new video shows Bowie watching footage of the car repair shop under the apartment he lived in along with
images of the city at the time and a lyric which raises the question Where Are We Now? Following the release of his last album, Reality, in 2003, fans were left wondering
when they would hear next from the British musician, actor, record producer and arranger. His website said: “In recent years radio silence has been broken only by end-
less speculation, rumour and wishful thinking. A new record. Who would have ever thought it, who’d have ever dreamed it! After all David is the kind of artist who writes

and performs what he wants when he wants, when he has something to say as opposed to something to sell. Today he definitely has something to say.”
nAomi kAte chArity boost cAmpbell in mugging Attempt
SUPERMODEL Naomi Campbell has been injured after an attempted mugging in Paris. her injuries have left her in a wheelchair with a brace on her left leg. She is understood to have torn a ligament during the mugging but refused to see a doctor when she reported the crime to police. A police source said: “On November 21, two people on a motorbike attempted to steal Ms Campbell’s handbag as she sat in a vehicle on Rue de Moussy.”She filed a complaint with police in the 4th arrondissement but she did not agree to a medical examination.” Campbell’s billionaire Russian
boyfriend, Vladimir Doronin, flew her by private jet to Colorado where it is believed she was treated by a leading orthopaedic surgeon. Mr Doronin is also believed to have increased security around her since the attempt. A spokesman for Campbell refused to comment on the affair and there have so far been no arrests in connection with the case. It is not the first time Campbell has had trouble on the road, it is, however, the first time she has been the victim. In 2010 she was accused of assaulting a driver from the back seat of a luxury 4x4. The man reported her to the police but later apologised saying the incident was “blown out of proportion”. He did not press charges.
ThE Treehouse, a children’s hospice in Ipswich has seen a surge in its profile since the Duchess of Cambridge became their Royal patron. Run by East Anglia’s Children’s hospices - EACh – is one of only four charities specially chosen by Kate to receive her special support. Chief executive Graham Butland, the impact has been huge. “It’s been tremendous, not only for EACh but also for palliative care nationally and internationally. her support has brought a whole new perspective to what we do.” Kate’s input has also helped the charity financially. “It’s difficult to know why people will give money,” said Mr Butland. “All I can say is our fundraising has held up very well at a time when most charities are seeing a dip in their income.” 13-year-old William loves his time at the Treehouse. He has a rare genetic condition and severe learning difficulties. The centre provides the chance for a much needed break for his parents. They met the Duchess during her visit last March. “She was just such a lovely, genuine, down to earth person,” said father Nick. “She came in and she got down with the kids and played with them and she spent far more time here than she was meant to. It gave the whole place a real lift and the whole town a real buzz.”
The Duchess of Cambridge was extremely careful when she chose which charities she intended to support. She
is also patron of Action on Addiction, another children’s charity called The Art Room and the National Portrait Gallery.

Tax Cheats Shamed
In a move to shame tax cheats, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have published the details of 32 criminals sentenced to a combined 155 years and 10 months in prison. The names and photographs of last year’s top tax cheats were made public as part of the Government’s efforts to crack down on evasion. The Government invested £917m in tackling the crimes of tax evasion, avoidance and fraud in 2011-12, with an additional £77m to be invested over the next two years. “Most people play by the rules and pay what they owe, but HMRC is cracking down on those who don’t,” said Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury David Gauke. “We hope that publishing these pictures will help get across that it always makes sense to declare all your income, and tax dodgers are simply storing up trouble for the future.” The Government hopes
the crackdown will raise an additional £7bn each year by 2014-15. Amongst those whose details were published were members of a criminal gang that has been jailed for one of the biggest alcohol-smuggling frauds ever uncovered in the UK. The scam, worth £50m a year in unpaid duty and VAT, allowed the gang members
to spend vast amounts of money on luxury cars and properties throughout Europe. The Prime Minister has made tackling tax avoidance a key issue of the UK’s presidency of the G8 group, amid mounting concerns over the tax policies of big international firms in the country.
British Tourist Dies In Australia
A British tourist has died after falling over the edge of a waterfall in New South Wales, Australia. The
un-named 20-yearold man was walking with friends in the Blue Mountains near Sydney when he
slipped over the edge of Wentworth Falls, according to police.
Emergency services - including police, paramedics
and rescue teams - were called and the man was declared dead at the scene. The man’s body was recovered after a search by rescue crews and a police helicopter. A police spokeswoman said: “The location is extremely rugged and difficult to access, despite the rescue crew being very experienced.” Wentworth Falls is a threetiered waterfall in the Blue Mountains. The overall height of the falls is 187 metres. The man was with a group of friends who had travelled from Sydney’s Bondi area to the area for a picnic and walk along a marked trail through
the bush. It is not believed the group was part of an organised tour. One witness, who was at the bottom of the waterfall, said he saw a group of French and English people “mucking around” on the rocks. “It’s very slippery, then they went down to the next one. I knew something was going to happen and then we just saw panic and a 20-yearold boy fell over 100 metres down the waterfall.” Police said his family and the British Consulate in Australia have both been notified of the death and a report will be sent to the
coroner,. A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said: “We are aware of the death of a British national in New South Wales, Australia, on January 6, 2013, and we are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time.” The Blue Mountains national park is about 37 miles west of Sydney and covers about a million hectares. It is a World Heritage site, the landscape of huge cliffs, deep rainforest gullies, sandstone canyons and waterfalls form part of the original country belonging to the Aboriginal people.

space tweets
COMMANDER Chris hadfield, a Canadian astronaut has tweeted a series of photos while orbiting the Earth in the International Space Station. As word got round of his amazing photos, his Twitter follower count shot skyward, as of Sunday night he had more than 89,000 followers on his @ Cmdr_hadfield account.
The astronaut described looking at Earth as a work of art, describing part of Italy as a diamond and confessed to being enthralled by swirling patterns in the seas. “So much of the world’s beauty is simply art itself,” he tweeted. Cmdr Hadfield, a former Canadian Air Force fighter pilot has flown into orbit twice before on the space shuttle, as a mission specialist aboard STS-74 and STS-100, and was the first Canadian to walk in space, he arrived at the ISS on December 21 aboard a
Russian Soyuz rocket. He told his Twitter followers of a number of differences between Earth and his temporary home even hinting that it was a good place for heavy snorers. “In space we snore much less - with no weight on sinuses and airways it makes for a quieter night. Many subtle changes up here,” he tweeted. The ISS orbits the Earth every 92 minutes at a speed of 8km a second. He explained that the ISS is being used as a “testbed” for interplanetary travel, and water recycling and high temperature experiments are being undertaken in weightlessness. The Canadian also kept Star Trek fans happy by tweeting a picture of himself being held by Captain Kirk, played by actor William Shatner. Cmdr Hadfield is also being kept abreast of events on Earth while orbiting. On Sunday night he tweeted another photo, in support of the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team, after a players’ strike was resolved. He wrote a caption saying: “With the lockout finally ending and a 50-game NHL season about to begin, I am ready to cheer from orbit. Go Leafs!” Cmdr Hadfield received an email from a Canadian Sunday political television show, CTV Question Period, asking why he was tweeting the mission. He replied: “Because this is too good and won-

He replied: “It takes several days for the human body to adapt to as bizarre a new condition as weightlessness, with nausea, change in digestion, fluid shift from legs to head causing congestion and facial swelling. Useless Burglers
Two men making their third attempt to break into jewellery shop discovered the wall they had hacked through with an iron bar was a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant. Undeterred Peter Welsh, 32, and Dwayne Doolan, 31, shrugged off their mistake and staged a hold-up of the takeaway in Beaudesert, southwest of Brisbane in Australia instead, escaping with £1,700. The men were arrested and charged with the New Year’s Eve robbery after a police raid on Welsh’s home. Southport Magistrates Court was told the pair had smashed their way through a wall in a communal toilet block tunnel, in an effort to get into Wrights Jewellers. Police prosecutor Sergeant Damian Summerfield said the hapless pair had earlier thrown spark plugs at the store to try and smash the front
window. When that failed, they then tried to break in through the back door, but found themselves in the Animal Welfare League Opportunity Shop, next door Sgt Summerfield said the men stole a charity box from the front counter containing £33), before trying again to break into the jewellery store. Police claim the men broke into a toilet block attached to the back of the group of shops and hacked a hole in the wall, then
crawled through. Once inside, they threatened KFC staff with the bar and demanded cash. “One female staffer opened the safe and they grabbed lots of cash,” Sgt Summerfield said. He said Welsh made “full and frank” admissions when questioned by police. Welsh is charged with armed robbery, stealing, burglary and attempted burglary while Doolan is charged with robbery and stealing.

Feline Felon Caught
A feline felon who had banned items strapped to his body has been captured by prison officers after it tried to deliver a mobile phone and tunnel-digging tools to inmates at the Alagoas prison in Brazil.
The cat, which had been specifically trained to deliver items, was discovered with the evidence strapped to its stomach. “An agent saw the cat and went to look at it closely because something about it seemed wrong,” said head of prison guards’ union, Marcelo Avelino. “The officer found a bag tied to the animal filled with saw blades and parts for concrete drilling and digging tunnels. It also had a mobile phone with battery and charger. Officials confirmed the cat had of-
ten been seen entering and leaving the Alagoas jail before the arrest. Prison officer Luiz de Oliveira Souza said prisoners had looked after the cat, and relatives would often take it home after visiting hours. “We were very surprised by this new tactic of prisoners, who trained the animal so it returned to the prison and even managed to carry materials, he said. Cinthya Moreno, Alagoas state prisons spokeswoman confirmed that the cat was caught on New Year’s Eve at the prison. According to the O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper, all of the prison’s 263 inmates are suspects in the smuggling attempt. However a representative at the prison added: “It will be hard to discover who is responsible since the cat does not speak.”

“honest abe’s By Marc Craig
IT’S “Lincoln” all the way at this year’s BAFTAs after the nominations were announced from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts headquarters in London on Wednesday this week. The Spielberg directed biopic has picked up no less than 10 nominations including Best Film and Best actor for Daniel Day Lewis in the title role.
His star turn in this historical epic has been the talk of Tinseltown, with critics and viewers and indeed, everyone involved in the production applauding his incredible performance, which makes the fact that the actor initially turned the role down even more surprising. In a letter to Spielberg the star said as fascinated as I was by Abe,
“
it was the fascination of a grateful spectator who longed to see a story told, rather than that of a participant. That’s how I feel now in spite of myself, and though I can’t be sure that this won’t change, I couldn’t dream of encouraging you to keep it open on a mere possibility. I do hope this makes sense Steven, I’m glad you’re making the film, I wish you the strength for it, and I send both my very best wishes and my sincere gratitude to you for having considered me.
”
There are best supporting actor and actress nominations for Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field and Best music, the rest were mainly technical nods. One glaring omission was a Best director nomination for Steven Spielberg,
but he’s most likely prepared for this as his movies have often been snubbed by these kind of awards ceremonies in the past, in fact he has fared worse with the BAFTAs than he has with Oscar, receiving only one win as director for “Schindler’s List” (he won the Oscar for that movie and also for “Saving Private Ryan”). However, The BAFTAs are by no
means a one horse race, “Lincoln” faces strong competition from “Les Miserables” and “Life of Pi” both receiving nine nominations (“Life of Pi” director Ang Lee received a Best Director nod). “Skyfall” received 8, however it missed out on best film, having to settle with best British film, meaning the Bond movie franchise still won’t get that
elusive Best Motion Picture award, fingers crossed for the Oscars then! Up for 7 awards is “Argo”, Ben Affleck’s 3rd movie after “doing an Eastwood” and becoming a respected director, he’s come a long way since the critically mauled “Gigli” in which he starred with then girlfriend J-lo or “Bennifer” as they were known!! Other notable Brits nominated were
Dame Helen Mirren for “Hitchcock”, Dame Judi Dench for “Skyfall”, and of course, “Les Miserables” (a British “Working Title” production) 9 nominations but not one for British director Tom Hooper who was nominated in 2011 for “The King’s Speech” but lost out to David Fincher for “The Social Network”. tourists Rescued from concordia site
FIVE German cruise ship passengers who hired an inflatable boat to get a close-up look at the wreck of the doomed Costa Concordia liner have been criticised by coastguards. The group, which included two children, had to be rescued themselves after their boat was swamped by waves. All were suffering from the effects of the cold.
Officials said the party were tourists from the Costa Magica, a cruise liner from the same fleet as the ill-fated Concordia, which struck rocks off the Italian island of Giglio last year leaving 32 people dead. The Germans had arrived at Civitavecchia and made their way to Porto Santo Stefano where they hired the small boat so they could take a look at the wreck of the Concordia which is still lying on rocks just outside the entrance to Giglio harbour. Although they managed to sail the 10 miles from Porto Santo Stefano, on the returning the weather changed and the boat got into difficulties. It managed to stay afloat and they were rescued by a coastguard vessel which took them back to the mainland.
After receiving medical attention, and being given the all-clear by paramedics they were taken back to Civitavecchia where they resumed their cruise ship holiday. Coastguard spokesman in Porto Santo Stefano said: ‘’It was a pretty stupid thing to do. They were lucky that it ended as it did - they could have quite easily had sunk. The strong wind created high waves and they were having trouble controlling their inflatable boat. They were all cold and wet but grateful for the fact we were on hand. They suffered no lasting effects but we did tell them not to try anything similar in the future.’’ The remains of the Costa Concordia have turned into a grim tourist attraction
with hundreds of sightseers catching a ferry from Porto Santo Stefano to Giglio so they view the 300ft ship and take pictures. The ship was on a seven-day cruise with more than 4,000 passengers and crew on board when captain Francesco Schettino is alleged to have altered the ship’s course so he could carry out a sail-by salute of Giglio to show off to passengers and islanders. He now faces charges of multiple manslaughter and abandoning his ship while passengers and crew were still on board. The trial is expected to start later this year and the operation to remove the vessel is not expected to be completed until the summer - 18 months after the disaster.

the name’s Winner... oscar Winner!
2012 was a momentous year for the Bond franchise, not only did it celebrate its 50th birthday to become the longest running movie franchise ever, but “Skyfall”, the 23rd Bond movie became the 1st ever movie to take £100 million at the British box office. Well the trend looks set to continue into 2013 and Oscar season as the producers of the Academy awards issued a statement saying “We are very happy to include a special sequence on our show saluting the Bond films on their 50th birth-

gillian taylforth bb star gaga’s LaLa
Actress, soap star, presenter, Vivo regular and my celebrity pal Gillian Taylforth is now a Celebrity Big Brother housemate!
The TV beauty visits the island several times a year and has been a regular at Vivo since my very first summer when it was still Chasers, and myself and Mea were performing as the “Wildboyz” out on the front terrace, almost 4 years ago!! She has been coming to see me ever since and was last here with us in August when she celebrated her birthday by having a joint party (mine is the day after), she also watched the fantastic Decades dinner show with friends and family and loved every minute of it!! Gillian’s big break was the role of Kathy Beale in “Eastenders” but she is also
well known for her roles in “Footballers Wives” and “The Bill”, has presented “Loose Women” and was a celebrity contestant on “Strictly Come Dancing” in 2008. She arrived at the BB house last Thursday dressed to kill in a stunning, tight red dress and was soon the subject of millions of tweets by viewers admiring how great she looked, including DJ Chris Moyles who tweeted, “Kate Moss is going in... Oh hang on, it’s Gillian Taylforth!” Other housemates in the 11th series of “Celebrity Big Brother” include XFactorer, Rylan Clark, who’s one of the favourites to win, Steps singer Claire Richards, reality star Heidi Montag, and winner of over 3000 horse races ( although I think the horses may have helped), Frankie Detorri. Good luck Gillian, for all of
us at Vivo you’re already the winner!!

bus!!
Call me old-fashioned but I won’t be getting therapy from a woman who’s worn a meat dress and is “born” from an egg at the beginning of one of her live concerts- but that is exactly what Lady Gaga fans can ex-
pect from her upcoming tour- therapy on a bus!!!
Widely rumoured to be part of another publicity stunt to raise her profile, (she’s incredibly good at these and you’re reading about it so it’s working), after recent ticket sales proved disappointing, the
megastar has announced that ticket holders for the “Born This Way Ball” can visit her travelling therapy centre the “BornBrave Bus” which will be parked outside concert venues. She tweeted, “For those wondering about the ‘counselling’ at the BTWBall BornBrave pre-show, it will be a fun tailgating experience for monsters to unite,” The bus is covered in psychedelic flowers and hearts with inspirational words like “kindness” and “bravery” graffitied on the sides and will also have DJ’s and food and games on board. What’s next? “How to get the most from your hat” seminars from Olly Murs? Harry Styles Hair Salon? Marriage counselling from Katy Perry? Here’s an idea Gaga-Just Dance.
good times with old friends
On a personal note it’s been great catching up with one of my old singing partners John Francis, who’s over with his parents John Snr. and my adopted mum Mary! John and I go way back, he became my best friend when I moved to Newcastle to join the band Foxy and after a few years, when we decided to change the format of the band and became a Boy band known as FOXX, I managed to convince John to do an audition as I had a feeling he would be great, sure enough I was right
and he’s never looked back. He has been running his own hugely successful group ENVY for many years now and works alongside another former singing partner and “Wildboy” Mea Deen, performing the hits of Take That and Westlife amongst others. They are an amazing act, you can find out more at http://www.envyuk.com. Here for another week, I’m sure John will be up onstage with me most nights down at Vivo and if you can make it down to see us I’m sure you won’t great to see you bro x be disappointed!!

fa cup anthem sing off
FOOTBALL bosses are launching a musical contest to find the next official FA Cup anthem for this season. Acts such as Lethal Bizzle, Devlin and the Pigeon Detectives will take part in the competition; fans will to vote for the track which will welcome players as they enter the pitch at Wembley for the final.
A shortlist of six acts has already been drawn up, each one hoping to be the soundtrack of the 2013 final as the Football Association celebrates its 150th anniversary. The contest started on Saturday; Lethal Bizzle performed his track Not A Saint with Vato Gonzalez and Donae’o before the third round game at Upton Park between West Ham and Manchester United. Further gigs will take place during each successive round, and then one act will
play at each of the two semifinals, with fans then voting for their favourite. Bizzle, who is related to Arsenal player Emmanuel Frimpong said: “I’ve watched The FA Cup since I was a boy and always dreamed of playing in it. “It’s a special competition and I’m made up to be a part of it, and hopefully I
can become part of its history by producing the official FA Cup anthem. “To have my music open the FA Cup Final really would be a dream come true.” Videos of the songs will be added to the FA’s website - at TheFA.com/TheFACup after each round, before the final on May 11.

Sharples in Session By John Sharples
Another Buy Buy New Year
Here we are, in 2013. Keep your eye on it though. I am sure that last year went from January 15th to November 15th whilst I was asleep. I remember going to bed one night with nothing on my mind and waking up thinking about Christmas. Where the time goes is anybody’s business.
Mind you, if 2013 is going to be as much of a mess as 2012, it might be better if we all go back to bed and wait 12 months. It is definitely going to be a hard year many believe that it will be worse than the last. Heaven help us. Anyway, whatever happens, I wish you all a very happy and safe 2013. We can all keep our fingers crossed; at least we can’t be taxed for that!
Shopping Nonsense
I needed an ink cartridge for my printer, so I popped into Media Markt in Santa Cruz. It’s a fab electronic and electrical goods store. It’s in a shopping centre that must have been designed by someone who wants to confuse people.
If you park on the bottom floor, you can go up just one floor by a well hidden lift. When you get there, it’s anybody’s guess how you get up to the next floor where Media Markt is. I managed to find a fire exit stairway and so I climbed it, opened the door and found
myself outside on the street. I then walked around the building and into Media Markt. Once I had bought my ink cartridge, I decided that there must be a better way back. I was right; I took a different stairway down and ended up with the option of going
back out onto the street or going into a furniture shop. I walked through the furniture shop and went out of the front entrance and found the original lift that took me to my car. Next time I go there shopping, I will give Aneka Rice a call.
Celebrity Big Brother
Oh how I hate these dreary reality shows. I yearn for the days when we had real programmes on the television.
I haven’t heard of most of the people in the show this year, apart from the lovely Gillian Taylforth, who we met when she came to see the show at Vivo last year. I hope that the lady wins it. I won’t be watching the show but she is an absolute doll, a very attractive lady and so warm and friendly. I will vote for her even though I won’t be watching. Come on Gillian!
I went to Al Campo, the big supermarket in the north. All I wanted was some washing powder. The place was absolutely packed. People were falling over each other to buy things. There were children screaming and husbands moaning and the place was like bedlam. The queue of traffic out of the
shopping centre was painfully long and it took me 35 minutes to get out of the car park and onto a clear road.
I was trying to work out when the recession ended. It just didn’t equate that so many people are out of work and living on or underneath the breadline in the Canaries and yet the place was a sea of carrier bags full of junk that will end up in a bin in a few weeks’ time.
The sales had started early for many shops. One perfume shop was being besieged. They had an offer that was hard to ignore. Buy a bottle and get a second for 5 euros. All the top names and brands were included. It was like hell in there. I couldn’t be bothered to go in. I just stood at the entrance and laughed as the sales girls were run ragged by a bunch of crazy people sniffing bits of scented paper! The cloud of perfume was overwhelming!

iphone thief caught on ‘Date’ NEW Yorker Nadav Nirenberg, left his iphone in the back of a taxi while on his way to a concert in Brooklyn on New Year’s Eve. But after calling the phone and leaving countless messages offering a reward, he heard nothing. The 27-year-ol trombonist created a profile on an OKCupid dating account and arranged a ‘date’ with the thief. He discovered the person who had stolen his phone had logged in to his OKCupid dating account and was sending “weird” messages from his profile to girls: “Not only had he stolen my phone, he was creepy and disturbing,” said Mr Nirenberg. “So I created another OKCupid account as ‘Jennifer Gonzalez’ a ficti-
tious 24-year-old girl who just moved to Brooklyn. Then I chatted him up”. ‘U wanna meet?’ the thief said in a message posted on the site. ‘Yeah I kinda do,’ Mr Nirenberg wrote back, suggesting that they meet at ‘Jennifer’s’ place that night. A few hours later Mr Nirenberg armed himself with a hammer and waited for the thief to appear. “Little did he know that on his way up the stairs I would pop out behind him, calmly give him $20 for my phone and tell him the cops were on the way,” he said. “I saw through the peephole that he was a small Indian dude. When he realised what had happened the look of shame on his face was priceless. He must have felt like an idiot. He was all dressed up, he was carrying a bottle of wine and he stank of cologne. I had the hammer in case he was insane or huge. I was scared but
I never threatened him in any way. “The $20 was because I wanted to lead with a peace offering instead of a confrontation. I could easily have kept the $20, his wine and probably his wallet, but I wanted it to be over as quickly as possible”. Mr Nirenberg has little sympathy for the thief, whom he believes was the driver of the taxi in which he had left his phone. “The dude thought that a 24-year-old girl who lives alone would invite a complete stranger over for wine. He also believed ‘Jennifer’ wouldn’t care about the message she received from him: ‘Hay the pic u see on my profile it not my pic it my friend pic’. ‘Jennifer’ also got messages from 30 men on OKCupid in the five hours she existed. “My apologies to the girl whose picture I used,” said Mr Nirenberg.

girl With no name
BLAER Bjarkardottir is suing her home country of Iceland for the right to use her name, banned because it is not on the country’s “approved” name list. The 15-year-old has
Officials say that the list is kept to make sure names fit Icelandic grammar and pronunciation rules and will stop children from being given embarrassing names. The name Elvis is on the list, as it conforms to Icelandic guidelines but Cara and Carolina are not because the letter c is not part of Iceland’s 32-letter alphabet. If a name is not on the list parents can apply to a committee for permission to use it, which means it can then be used on official documents such as school registers and passports. In Blaer’s case however, the committee refused and now she and her mother are to become the first to take their case to court. Blaer’s mother, Bjork Eidsdottir said she only found out the name wasn’t on the register after the priest who baptised the

girl later informed her he had allowed it by mistake. She said: “I had no idea that the name wasn’t on the list, the famous list of names that you can choose from.” The naming committee panel rejected the teenager’s application on the grounds the word Blaer is masculine, even though it was used for a female character in a novel by Iceland’s Nobel Prize-winning author Halldor Laxness. Blaer, meaning “light breeze” in Icelandic, is officially identified as “Stulka” which means girl and is the name carried on her passport and bank details. “The law is pretty straightforward so in many cases it’s clearly going to be a yes or a no.” said Agusta Thorbergsdottir, head of the committee, a panel of three people appointed by the government to a four-year term.
She added: “What one person finds beautiful, another person may find ugly.” She used the example of “Satania” as one unacceptable case because it was deemed too close to “Satan”. Blaer and her mother are now hoping that the courts will overturn the committee’s decision in a hearing on January 25. If not, they are willing to take it all the way to the country’s Supreme Court. Several other countries have “approved” names lists, including Germany and Denmark. But the trend for unusual names is growing, largely driven by celebrities in the US and the UK. Beyonce and rapper husband Jay Z called their child Blue Ivy. The actress Gwyneth Paltrow and her rock star husband Chris Martin called their first child Apple.

New Year’s resolution Breaker! Chocolate Brownie Cake
Hehehe… So how many of you have made a new year’s resolution “watch what you eat or to diet this year”? Well I’m being cruel and tempting you with this special treat! For all you chocoholics out there, here’s something special. A wonderful recipe that hits your chocolate cravings!! You don’t have to make it as a round cake; you can always use a square tin, even a bread loaf, or make small individual cakes. Typical brownie recipes have walnuts in the ingredients, - I’m not a fan of walnuts so I tend to leave them out, but you can adapt it as you like. Did you know there is a variation of this recipe called ‘Blondie’ which is a brownie made without chocolate?
Ingredients
100g butter 175g caster sugar 75g light brown sugar 125g chocolate (plain or milk)
Method:
Heat oven to 180°C and grease the baking tin of your preference. I usually use a 20cm tin. Place the butter, caster sugar, brown sugar, chocolate and golden syrup in the pan and melt gently on a low heat until it is smooth. Remove the pan from the heat. Break the eggs into the bowl and whisk with the fork until light and frothy. Add the eggs, vanilla extract or essence, flour, baking powder and cocoa powder to the chocolate mixture and mix thoroughly. Put the mixture into the greased and lined cake tin
1 tbsp. golden syrup 2 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla extract/ essence 100g plain flour ½ tsp. baking powder 2 tbsp. cocoa powder and place on the middle shelf of the oven. Bake for 25-30 mins. (Reduce time if you are making small individual ones!) Remove and allow to cool for 20-30 mins before cutting into wedges and serving.
Pugh’s Secret Tip:
My favourite tip with this recipe is to add a bag of white chocolate drops and some small marshmallows and stir it into the mixture before baking!!!! Delicious! Make two cakes, sandwich them together and top it with fudge icing, for the ultimate chocolate rush! (Please don’t attempt this if you are diabetic)

Fantasy or Family? Mum won’t cuddle me I really feel I should clear the air and come clean to my partner but would this make things worse? Christina
I had my first baby 4 months ago and me and my partner are really happy. But there’s one problem. I keep having fantasies about the bloke who lives next door. Every time I think about him I get butterflies in my stomach but I feel so guilty too. I don’t understand why it’s just started because he’s lived next door for a year but my crush has only started last month. I have been totally faithful to my partner but I’m worried that even having these fantasies is cheating on him.
So long as these fantasies remain fantasies, there shouldn’t really be a problem Christina. In fact, most people get carried away with their thoughts at one time or another so you’re certainly not alone. The only thing you’re guilty of is thinking that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence – literally in this case! Just four months on from giving birth, you’re bound to be awash with all sorts of emotions so try not to torture yourself. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to try to channel some of this pent up desire into your relationship and maybe spend some time trying to re-ignite what you already have. As for telling your partner? I think that would go down like a lead balloon don’t you? It’s definitely a bad idea, trust me on that. Just bide your time, enjoy being a mother and convince yourself that this is just a phase that’s going to pass.
Since I was 14 my mum suffered from OCD (obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and wouldn’t touch me, let alone hug or kiss me. Things got worse when her dad passed away 2 years ago and now everything I do seems to be wrong. I’m getting so down by it all I don’t want to be here anymore. She won’t speak to the doctor or anyone for help so I feel powerless to help her. I don’t know what to do. Charlotte I feel so sorry for you Charlotte, it must feel like you’re banging your head against a brick wall. Oddly enough, the positive here is that you know for a fact that OCD is to blame for the way your mum is. Keep trying to convince her that she must get help, somewhere deep down inside, I’m sure she knows that. Take a look at www. ocdaction.org.uk for information and advice specifically targeted at people living with and caring for
Nightmare ex, but I love him
My ex sexually assaulted me six months ago. He split up with me soon after and so, even though I still love him, I told the police that I wanted to prosecute. A week later my ex told me that if I dropped charges we could get back together. I went back to the police told them that I’d lied but now he doesn’t want to have anything to do with me again. I’m such an idiot for believing
him and now feel that I can’t go back to the police because this time they’ll think I’m making it up again. Emily
Emily, you MUST go back to the police. Explain to them everything that’s happened and the reason why you dropped the charges in the first place. I’m pretty sure that convincing you to drop the charges is an offence as well!
If it isn’t, it certainly should be! Nothing changes the fact that this animal violated you and he must be punished. All the time he’s roaming free, other women are at serious risk from exactly the same thing. I know you feel like you’ve been duped but this seems to be how this unsavoury character operates. Don’t let him get away with what he did to you, please.
OCD sufferers. You’re certainly not alone in feeling unloved, miserable and desperate. OCD affects everybody in the family, not just the person who has it! Make a start by reading up on the condition and how other carers cope. It would definitely benefit you to start talking to
people and taking on board their suggestions in terms of coping with your feelings. Above all, keep firmly in mind the fact that this is an illness and not a choice on your mother’s part. You can get through this darling, but you’re going to have to put in a lot of effort.
Am I just too old to be a good mum?
My fourth child was born 10 years after my other three, and I’m having real trouble with his behaviour. My first three were good kids when they were growing up and have turned into wellbehaved teenagers. My youngest, however, is a nightmare. I don’t think I’ve brought him up any differently but I’m worried that I’m too old and I’ve lost my ability to be a mum. Do you think this is possible? Fran
You need to make an appointment with your GP Fran. There could be a million and one reasons for your son’s behavioural issues and it’s essential that you rule out the medical possibilities as soon as possible. ADHD can cause serious problems in young children and if left undiagnosed can spell years of misery for the entire family. Of course not every child is the same and I’ve heard from parents in
the past with exactly the same problems as your encountering. Whatever the cause here, sitting with your head in your hand in complete despair isn’t going to change things is it? It’s highly likely that the longer you leave things the way they are, the harder it will be to treat or address the issue. Make an appointment right away and start working towards a solution for this problem.

WORLD WITHOUT END Channel 4 - 21:00 - 22:55 Cynthia Nixon, Peter Firth, Charlotte Riley and Miranda Richardson head up the all-star cast in Ken Follett’s epic sequel to The Pillars of the Earth.
Set in the aftermath of a civil war in Medieval England, Queen Isabella (Aure Atika) defeats and imprisons her husband, making way for their young son, Edward III,(Blake Ritson) to be crowned King. Meanwhile, in the town of Kingsbridge, an injured mysterious knight is helped to shelter by the teenage sons of Sir Gerald, Earl of Shiring: Merthin (Tom Weston-Jones) and Ralph (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). As healers Mattie (Indira Varma) and Caris (Charlotte Ri-
41
ley), along with Mother Cecilia (Miranda Richardson) and Prior Anthony (Kevin Moore), nurse him back to health, rumours spread that the King has been murdered and his killer has disappeared. The end of the war does not mean peace for the people of Kingsbridge though, as the arrival of the corrupt Queen’s right-hand man, Sir Roland (Peter Firth), leads to the punishment of supposed ‘traitors’ in the town. Caris (Charlotte Riley) and her aunt, Petranilla (Cynthia Nixon) try to use their charms to secure the freedom of Caris’ father Edmund (Carlo Rota), but Petranilla has her own motives and will go to any lengths to achieve her ambitions for her son, Godwyn (Rupert Evans).

Winterwatch BBC 2 - 20:30 - 21:30 Winterwatch is a brand-new live wildlife event for BBC Two broadcasting for four days in the depths of Winter. Following on from the live Autumnwatch event, Winterwatch returns to our base in the Scottish Highlands to capture the beauty, drama and spectacle of the UK’s most iconic animals as they battle to survive the most challenging time of year. Chris Packham, Martin Hughes-Games and Michaela Strachan will be presenting Winterwatch live from Aigas Field Centre in the spectacular Highlands of Scotland – a landscape that has been transformed by the seasonal changes. Winterwatch’s network of live cameras will monitor the animals’ every move throughout the week. We’ll be catching up with the beaver family, the pine

martens, the birds and the red squirrels and finding out whether their preparations for the winter have enabled them all to survive. Across the UK wildlife is struggling to cope with the harsh realities of winter - short days, plummeting temperatures and a lack of food. The team will report on the array of strategies that different animals adopt to survive these challenges, from Rooks which seek warmth and safety in numbers in spectacular rookeries, to the birds and mammals who find a safe haven in our towns and gardens, as well as the creatures that hunker down and hibernate. Winterwatch will be covering winter spectacles as huge flocks of birds migrate to the UK from colder climes, bringing life and beauty to our fields and shorelines.

SAVING FACE: TRUE STORIES Editor Recommends Channel 4 - 22:00 - 23:10
This extended version of the Oscar-winning film Saving Face chronicles the journey of pioneering British plastic surgeon Dr Mohammad Jawad as he goes back to Pakistan to aid the recovery of acid-attack victims. Every year in Pakistan, over 100 people - most of them women - are known to be victimised by brutal acid attacks, while numerous other cases go unreported. With little or no access to reconstructive surgery, survivors are physically and emotionally scarred. Many reported assailants, typically a husband or someone else close to the victim, receive minimal punishment from the state. Dr Jawad is the surgeon
responsible for treating British acid-attack victim Katie Piper - as documented in Channel 4’s Baftanominated Katie: My Beautiful Face - and he regularly returns from his prominent London surgery to Pakistan to help the victims of such attacks. Oscar and Emmy-winning Pakistani director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Oscar-winning and Emmynominated American filmmaker Daniel Junge follow Dr Jawad as he makes every effort to save and reconstruct the faces of two women. Saving Face takes an intimate look inside Pakistani society, illuminating two women’s personal journey while showing how reformers in Pakistan are tackling this horrific problem.

Nauta A 4 v 6 Target Bar
Always a good night when the Target boys are in town. Target Rob should have seven balled Jack, but allowed him a shot on the black, only to see him go in off and give Target the points. Nauta Ray C played a perfect game not missing a shot with superb positioning. Nauta Simon was then seven balled by Grant. Target Dave played the shot of the night with a combination shot of Red corner pocket and Black middle! The first doubles was a comedy of errors, 4 in off’s on the trot followed by yet another foul from hitting the wrong colour. Ray C back to his best announced exactly where he was going to pot the Black and did so with a rocket of a double to the bottom pocket. Target Dave had an easy pot on black to finish off Jack but for some reason he forgot he was on black and potted Jacks red instead to gift Jack the win!
Bar 180 C 4 v 6 Vivo
A belter of a tie in San Blas where the league leaders entered the arena, but were soon 3-1 down to a determined home side. Vivo showed why they are top of the league, winning the next three including both doubles to take a 4-3 lead. Sebastian for Vivo looked good for the next frame until he rattled his penultimate red to let Captain Wayne pocket his remaining set to level at 4-4. All eyes were
on the ninth frame where 180 Robin played a loose shot to let Victor finish in style. The match was on a knife edge, 180c could then only salvage a point and it was Cloughie against Pedro. 180c Cloughie started out well and cleared most of his balls, but Pedro, left with seven to Cloughies one, decided to play snookers to give himself space. Laying his third snooker Pedro played a great shot, only for Cloughie to make the shot of the season round the table and left the white touching his yellow to return the snooker on Pedro. It was to be an impossible shot and gave Cloughie ball in hand, with yellow and black left, surely a straight forward finish. No, Cloughie miscued and the yellow which was supposed to travel almost the full diagonal to the top pocket went about 2 inches - oops!! Two shots to Pedro, and big sigh of relief from Vivo. What a game. What a night!
Bar 180 A 8 v 2 Frosties
A comfortable win for the title chasing Bar180a in the local golf derby, Damien was the only one for Frosties to win frames, highlight was captain Martin for 180, 7 balling Julian in the last frame.
Fosters 5 v 5 Lupain
A cold night at Puerto Colon, didn’t stop Fosters storming into a three nil lead, but Frank of Lupain steadied the ship with victory over Warwick, doubles shared, Lupain took 3 of the last

Summerland Elite 8 v 2 Barracuda hunters
The first frame with John & Steve was a long safety game; John for Elite finally put the black away. Next game again down to just one ball and Darrell (Elite) seeing the black away. Mark v Klaus saw Klaus put the black in, but alas the white went across the table and slipped in the pocket giving Mark the game. (The luck of that guy!) The first double went to Hunters, whose second doubles team tried to snooker their way to a win, however, Alan & Darrell for Elite got an opening and took full advantage and the frame. Roger ended up being the only winning Hunter on the night.
Barracuda Bandits 7 v 3 Bar 180 B
A good night played in great spirits. The hero of the night was undoubtedly Raymond, the Barracuda father figure at 74 yrs. old. He won his singles and doubles with skill, style and panache.
Lowrys 4 v 6 Leone
Great nip and tuck match at Lowrys, who entered the break with a narrow lead, but then failed to perform in the second half and allowed Leones to take the last three frames to defeat a below par home team.
Clouseaus Diamonds 4 v 6 Trap Door
The home team had chance to claim the first two frames but fell short. Andy & Stig managed to bring it back to 2-2. The doubles, though close games went the way of Trap Door. Paul cleared well to get a leg back for the Diamonds. Dave a holiday maker and guest for Diamonds never had a chance against Mickey. In the ninth and needing both last frames for a draw, it all looked lost until Trap Door Jamie left the black in the jaws. A brilliant 5 balls & the black saw Stig claim a fantastic Diamond victory. In the final leg Marcus was in the driving seat from the break, but out of position with 2 left gave Andy a chance. A ball that should have stayed in the jaws didn’t, and then one that shouldn’t did, and gave Marcus his chance. One iffy shot and 2 good pots saw Trap Door home. Overall a very close game and the home side felt a draw would have been fair but well done to Trap Door on their double over us.
Oasis 3 v 7 hoops
Game played in great spirit and Hoops gained revenge for first day defeat....Stuart for Oasis stood out with two great clearances while John showed his class with two equally devastating finishes and Keiran twice......food was excellent and service from all staff at Oasis superb....Hoops boys look forward to next visit!
WEST Brom boss Steve Clarke says Swedish centre-back Jonas Olsson will not be leaving during the transfer window. The Baggies have rejected a bid believed to be in the region of £5m from QPR for the defender and Clarke says any further attempts to sign the player will be met with a similar response. With West Brom seventh in the Premier League and on course for a fine season,
Clarke is naturally keen to retain the services of his key players. However, the manager did admit that there is a buy-out clause in Olsson’s contract which could be activated by one of six clubs this summer. Reports have suggested that Olsson is keen to be based in London for family reasons but Clarke said: “I can confirm a bid has been turned down and I don’t encourage any more bids, because Jonas is not for sale.
“I have spoken to Jonas and he says he is loving the football here, he is enjoying the position we are in, and he is looking forward to the rest of the season “He will remain a West Brom player and we don’t have to sell anyone. He is not for sale, so there is no figure which is reasonable. “There is a clause in Jonas’ contract which comes into play during the summer. There are six clubs that can invoke that.”
Red bull to launch new Rb9 car on february 3rd
Red Bull will launch the car, the RB9, that they will attempt to win a fourth straight championship double with in 2013 at their Milton Keynes factory on February 3.
The triple World Champions have followed McLaren, Force India, Sauber and Ferrari in confirming their new challenger will be unveilved in the days prior to the opening test of pre-season, despite speculation that they were behind in the build of the RB9. The date has been set for Sunday 3 February, two days before action gets underway at
Jerez, with the venue set for their factory in Milton Keynes. Although it wasn’t explicit in the brief announcement, which arrived via Twitter, the launch date would appear to confirm that Red Bull will be in action as scheduled at Jerez. The team’s design guru Adrian Newey had recently revealed that their season-long development push in 2012 had left them playing catch up to get the new car ready in time, prompting speculation that Red Bull could be forced to delay the introduction of the RB9 until the first of the Barcelona tests later in February.

Tottenham ‘strong enough to field two top sides,’ says QPR boss Redknapp
QPR boss Harry Redknapp reckons his former club Tottenham have enough quality to field two sides capable of challenging at the top of the Premier League.

Redknapp welcomes the club that sacked him at the end of last season to Loftus Road on Saturday and has watched his successor, Andre Villas-Boas, guide them to third in the table. Survival, by contrast, is the challenge at Loftus Road and Redknapp knows the league’s bottom-placed side face a tough task to make his reunion with the north Londoners a memorable one. “Spurs could field two teams who could compete in the Premier League,” he told the Evening Standard. “They have a second team who would hold their own at the top level without any problem. For a start, they have five top-class centrebacks.
“They can afford to let Danny Rose go to Sunderland on loan because they have people like Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Kyle Naughton and Kyle Walker in the squad. They have loads of top-class midfielders. “They’re full of quality everywhere. It’s a similar group to the one I left but then Mousa Dembele has gone in and done well. They have an outstanding group of players, no doubt about that.” “Not many people walk away from a club as popular as I was at that time. Normally when you leave a football club, you go out with the fans shouting for you to go but I never had that.” Harry Redknapp Quotes of the week.
Redknapp had guided Spurs to their second fourth-placed finish in three campaigns before he was dismissed, but denies any illfeeling towards his former employers. “It will be strange but time moves on and I have no bad feelings towards Tottenham,” he added. “I don’t live my life like that. I had a great time there, I loved the fans and they were great to me. “Not many people walk away from a club as popular as I was at that time. Normally when you leave a football club, you go out with the fans shouting for you to go but I never had that. The people treated me absolutely brilliantly.”
Audley Harrison will feature in International Heavyweights Audley Harrison will return to action in the third edition of Prizefighter - International Heavyweights at York Hall on February 23.
The former Olympic champion was last seen being knocked unconscious by British and Commonwealth champion David Price in October. But, now 41, Harrison still hopes to leave the sport on a high despite numerous disappointing performances. One of those came against Northern Ireland’s Martin Rogan, who - like Harrison - is a former Prizefighter champion who will be looking to add a second trophy to his
collection. Rogan, also 41, went five rounds with Tyson Fury last April but it is almost five years since he burst on the domestic heavyweight scene
with victory in the very first Prizefighter at this venue. The veteran will make his comeback in a four-round warm-up fight in Belfast on February 9.

Jesus Alvaro was in at left back for Llorente and won more admirers for his cool head, sure defending, and eye for a forward break. Chechu hit the post at the half way mark and Aridane wasted another strong chance with a weak shot at the keeper. The ref was poor and let Salamanca get away with theatrical rolls whilst ignoring two decent penalty shouts from Tenerife, par-
