While we are all sunning ourselves over here, we spare a thought for our friends and family who are currently shivering back in the U.K. I have met several guests here at Vivo who have had horrendous journeys to get here, some having to suffer delays of 9 hours sitting on planes that were going nowhere. How is it that every year, bar none, the Blighty gets caught out? Take a look at page 20, in Chicago the temperatures were so cold that fire fighters

Tenerife Weekly - 25th January - 31st January 2013 watched in amazement as the water they were using to extinguish a fire, froze in sheets across the buildings. Now that IS cold! I for one loved Michael Winner. This irascible man spoke his mind and didn’t really care what anyone thought. He had little respect for anyone who, in his mind didn’t deserve it, but gave a lot back to those he thought did. How many of us knew that he set up the Police Memorial Trust after the murder of Yvonne Fletcher? He had a wonderful life, with a huge number of

“girlfriends” and generally had a ball. R.I.P Mr Winner. Starting next week, I will be running a column written by a legal expert, especially for expats outlining exactly what you need to make sure you are both legal and covered for any eventuality you may find yourself in. If you have any questions or queries that you would like answered, please email me on editor@tenerife-weekly.com. See you all next week.

Turismo Fines

Tourism and more importantly, tourism spending figures have been reported as on the up for the end of 2012 and into 2013. Income from tourism across the Canary Islands during November reached the highest levels since 2005, when records began, reaching 1,046 million Euros, just before Christmas. An actual increase of 2,2% on the same period the previous year. Welcome news for hotels owners, although some of this raised income came from increased hotel prices and airport taxes, it also means that tourism gave the Canary Islands as a whole an income of 9,657 million Euros, an actual increase of 415 million Euros on 2011. On a national scale, Spain received 57.7 million international visitors, 2.7% increase on last year. Tourists visiting the Canary Islands fell by 0.7%, to 10.1 million arrivals, however it is still rated as the third most popular tourist destination in Spain. Although the figures are slightly less than was announced on January 16th by the tourism minister Jose Manuel Soria, 2012 was still recorded as the highest year for international arrivals after 2006 and 2007 across Spain. Although the U.K., Germany and France arrivals were high, the largest increase was by visitors from the Russian market, up 40% to

1.2 million. Britain still retained the record for most visitors with 13.6 million visiting Spain. Arrivals in Spain in December amounted to 2.6% more international tourists, which is 1.3% less than a year ago, breaking the positive trend experienced in November, the month in which arrivals rose by 0.2%. The Canary Islands captured 35% of arrivals in the last month of the year, with 922,283 visitors, with a rise of 0.2% over the same month of 2011.

San Isidro Police got the surprise of their lives when they stopped a Fiat Panda on Sunday afternoon. Local traffic police suspicions were aroused as they noticed the car circulating a roundabout in San Isidro close to the towards the TF-1 motorway.

They noticed that the car seemed to be rather packed and got the diver to stop. What the police were not expecting was, not without difficulty, 9 males and 1 young girl, all in their twenties, emerge from inside the vehicle. Perhaps not surprisingly, the driver tested positive for alcohol following a breathalyser.

The Court has now agreed to suspend enforcement, but only if the amount of the fine is lodged in a Spanish bank account to prove to the Court that you are able to pay if you lose the case: since this acts as a guarantee, the money is untouchable while the appeal is being heard.. This leaves everyone appealing with three options. For those able to raise the money, you can either lodge it in a bank as a guarantee, or pay the fine straight to the Government. Either way, the payment would have to be made now, and you would get it back if the Court decided in your favour. Moreover, the Government would not put a charge on property or embargo bank accounts. The advantages to putting the mon-

ful. However, local lawyer José Escobedo has submitted a petition to the Court along with the appeals requesting that any fine payment is not enforced while the case is on-going.

ey on account as a guarantee rather than paying it to the Government are first that interest and surcharges would not be added to the fine if the case is lost in Court, and secondly, that if you end up winning, a refund would be made immediately. If the fine is paid to the Government it could take another year to get your money back. The third alternative is not to pay. While this might seem the most attractive option, those who neither pay the fine nor lodge the money as a bank guarantee will end up paying 20% interest on any fine imposed if they end up losing the case, and moreover, the Government will embargo property and/ or bank accounts. Unfortunately, it has already become

clear that the Government is pushing full steam ahead with the fine enforcements: some accounts have already been embargoed. There are, so far, appellants in all three categories. Evidently, for those who simply cannot find the money the decision is simple, but for those who could, the threat to place charges on property and embargo accounts is not an empty one. Some accounts have already been embargoed; clearly it will take longer for the Government to register a charge against the property concerned. If you are going to pay, or to place the money on deposit as a guarantee, you need to act as quickly as possible to avoid being embargoed in the meantime.

Ten thousand Canarian businesses have closed during the crisis, while the large out of town shopping centers flourish. Less consumption and the lack of bank credit for small and medium sized businesses have created a vicious circle for Canarian companies. Meanwhile, more large shopping centers have been created, and opening hours extended. The Canaries have also lost three hundred and twenty eight restaurants and bars since the start of the crisis. Of these, the restaurants have suffered the most. The number of bank branches has also fallen, with the La Caixa takeover.

This week, the Santa Cruz distillery will present Macaronesian Gin, the first premium gin made traditionally in the Canaries, with a well-balanced flavour and aroma. The distillery was motivated by the increasing demand for premium gin, and inspired by the alisios – the typical north easterly winds, the sea, and laurisilva forests where juniper, the main botanical ingredient, grows abundantly. Made with pure water from the island’s volcanic galleries. Macaronesian Gin has the aromas and flavours of juniper, cardamom, angelica root and liquorice. The Canarian government has now paid ferry companies Naviera Armas and Fred Olsen a total of eight million six hundred and seventy six thousand euros, as compensation for providing obligatory public services, on routes where they need public subsidies in order to be able to offer adequate services to the public, and residents discounts. This came out of last year’s budget. The government has allowed for over thirty three and a half million euros for the same concept in this year’s budget, plus the outstanding amount for last year. a choreographer for the Carnaval Queen Election gala, was expelled last Friday for placing an inappropriate message on Facebook regarding rehearsal hours, and has been replaced by three others. Meanwhile, the artistic directors have asked Tenerife’s Indian community to take part in the gala. Some eighty children and young people will dance the popular Bollywood number, Jei Jo, which is number one in their country. India’s Consul will be the president of the jury on the night, and there will be Indian food stalls at the Day Carnaval on the 16th. Las americas Guardia Civil arrested a woman under suspicion of the theft of 55.775 Euros from the safe in the office where she worked as a cleaner. A Guardia Civil spokesman says they received a call stating that someone had used the correct code for the safe and removed all of the money. The police investigations revealed that codes used to open doors was the same one used to open the safe. The money has yet to be found. at this year’s Carnaval in Santa Cruz, there will be the lowest number of kiosks ever selling beer, hamburgers and playing music on the streets. On Tuesday, at the kiosk auction, the council only managed to sell thirty five of the seventy four businesses offered, twenty two less than last year, and only collected half the money predicted, almost a hundred thousand euros less than last year. In several of the most popular areas for nighttime music and dancing, such as the Plaza de la Candelaria and the Plaza de España, not one beer stall was taken. Tourism fell in the Canaries last year by 0.7%, with a final figure of 10.1 million visitors, making the Canaries third in the list of independent communities for the number of visitors, according to Frontur. However, night stops in hotels by foreign tourists grew by 6.3% in December, when compared with the same month a year before. There were 1.8 million in Tenerife. The south of Tenerife had 72% occupation, and the best weekend occupation levels.

By Colin Kirby EVEn the Copacabana would be impressed at the amount of international beach volleyball players that choose to train at Las Vistas beach in Los Cristianos. The current crop of visitors includes the men’s teams from Holland, Germany, and Poland and the ladies from Spain and Holland. One of the busiest coaches is Morph Bowes from Greenock, Scotland, last year he brought the GB ladies for preOlympic training and now he is back as coach to the Dutch team. It’s been a time of big changes for Morph “The Olympics were amazing and our sport was one of the best received by the public, crowds of 15,000 at each game on Horse Guards Parade followed by a big increase in people wanting to take up the sport. Then in October I got a call from the Australian coach of the Dutch ladies to say he was moving to a male coaching role and there was a role I might be interested in.” Morph already knew many of the Holland ladies from training together and as they all speak good English there was no language barrier. Back home the team was based at Bath University with outdoor training but Holland could offer something better. “They train at the Lindo Beach Centre in The Hague which has three indoor courts and the local council is very supportive of beach volleyball.’ The seven top ladies, all professional, from Holland are in Tenerife for two weeks, their top pairing of Sophie Van Gestel and Madelein Meppelink have plenty to aim for. “We paired up after the Beijing Olympics but were still the youngest team at London 2012” said 22 year old Madelein. This summer we have the World Championships in Poland and in 2015 they will be held in

Holland so that’s an extra incentive for us.” Sophie, aged 21, knows there are tough challenges ahead. “Many countries have made changes since the Olympics so Poland will be a tough tournament. We have changed too since the arrival of Morph, he brings a slightly different style and a fresh approach.” Morph’s commitment to Holland will take him to the next Olympics in Brazil but for now it’s all about training hard in Tenerife.

Counterfeiting CD’S And DVD’S Operation Uncovered

The Guardia Civil, as part of “Operation Peluso”, have arrested two people and charged four others for the illegal sale of pirate music CDs and DVD’s in Tenerife. The operation led to the dismantling of a province-wide known company that was responsible for the distribution and sale of counterfeit music and movies. The investigation began last year following a complaint by the General Society of Authors and Editors (SGAE), it had detected a significant increase in the sale of counterfeit music CDs here. The Judicial Police, in charge of the investigation, were able to locate the underground warehouse where they stored and distributed the ‘pirate’ products to different parts of the island where they were put on sale. The operation also uncovered the location of a record producer who in addition to producing Canarian artists carried out mass production of counterfeit CDs and DVDs, as well as the location of a printer in Santa

Cruz where copying and counterfeiting took place. Police seized more than 1,600 ‘pirate’ C.D’s and DVD’ s, machinery used for counterfeiting, four DVD duplicating machines capable of recording up to 40 CDs or DVDs simultaneously, two high quality DVD printers, all valued at over 30,000 Euros. The operation ended with the arrest of the owner of the distribution company and the record producer and four others, as alleged participants in an intellectual property crime against property and other industries. The Guardia Civil worked with local police across Tenerife in order to remove all the material and stop companies involved in the distribution of fake merchandise which included gas stations, bars, restaurants and shops. The result of this action has been the seizure of around 17,600 counterfeit CDs and DVDs, distributed in about 1,000 stores. However, business owners who stocked the products for sale were not aware that it was counterfeit material because of its good quality and were shocked to

learn that fact. Once the seized material arrived in central headquarters of the Guardia

Civil, the Organic Unit of the Judicial Police were assisted by experts in the field to separate the original

disks from counterfeit, eventually discovering that just over 10,000 cd’s (70% ) were fake.

New Pediatric School Evacuated After Bomb Found Centre

The National Police evacuated several buildings near a school, in the neighbourhood of Ofra, Santa Cruz, after discovering an explosive device on the school premises.

La Colina Hospital, part of the Chiron Hospital Group, has launched a new pediatric emergency department to cover all families in the metropolitan area of Tenerife that require an immediate response to health issues regarding their children.

In order to cover this service, the center is equipped with all necessary infrastructure and medical equipment; there are three new pediatricians, in addition to the large team of specialists that was formed just over a year to create the Department of Pediatrics of La Colina. The unit is staffed by director, Dr. Amado Zurita, and doctors Elena Fraga, María José Hernández, José Sebas-

tian Leon, Martin Viota Lucia, Carmen Rosa Rodriguez, Maria Cristina Ontoria, Lourdes Vanesa Martin Conde, Nayra Carmona Zerezade Cedrés and Coello Torres. Ten pediatricians also offer specialized consultation in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Pediatric Nephrology, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Pulmonology, Pediatric Neurology and Pediatric Allergology.

It is thought that the device was left after work had been carried out in the school as it was found between an inner and outer wall which had been recently built. Police sources added that when they learned of the presence of the device, they applied the protocol required in these situations, evacuating both the school and surrounding buildings. The Police cornered off the area with sandbags and detonated the device in a controlled explosion.

The Emergency Coordination Centre reported that at about 4:00 pm a warning was received that a device had been found on the premises of the school. The National Police indicated that at that time and there were very few children in attendance, and they were evacuated along with locals. The device was located at the building in Calle Sargentos Provisionales, Police are investigating the possibility that it had been left intentionally.

LaST week, local charity “Helping Hands in Tenerife” who sponsor a home for handicapped children in Guargacho, received a welcome boost after a party at Restaurante Sebastian in Sunset Bay, Torviscas. One of Restaurant Sebastian’s partners, Alan Nicolson, who is also a partner in local Estate Agents, Clear Blue Skies Group, held a birthday party there, and invited friends and colleagues from Tenerife and Europe to come and enjoy a feast of great food and superb wine and wonderful entertainment from Doug Brown and Elmar, two of Sebastian’s regular entertainers. This was provided by Alan’s wife, Louisa, and guests were invited to contribute to the charity “Helping Hands in Tenerife” run by Liz Montague to benefit local children’s charities. This raised a sum of 395 euros and Clear Blue Skies Group contributed a donation to make the total up to 500 euros. Liz Montague said later, “We’re very grateful to Restaurante Sebastian and Clear Blue Skies Group for this donation. During these difficult times, as usual it’s the weakest and most vulnerable in society

who suffers most. “Helping Hands in Tenerife” was set up to try to help those most in need, and this

donation will go towards buying special chairs for a school for the handicapped in Guargacho.

We hope to organise other such events with Alan’s help, and anyone else wishing to offer any assis-

tance to us should contact me on 661 274 281 or email lizmontague@ yahoo.co.uk”.

www.tenerife-weekly.com The mayor of Santa Cruz, Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, presided at a meeting of the Local Security Board, which addressed all safety devices, emergency and traffic control for February’s Carnival in Santa Cruz. “Thanks to the efforts of all the authorities involved, as well as the security and police forces, we will increase the number of troops for the most popular acts, so that it remains the safest Carnival in the world, “he said. Also in the meeting was the deputy of the Government of Tenerife, Guillermo Díaz Guerra, who stressed “the excellent data concerning security, is endorsing the work of the whole operation for the Carnival, which helps us to keep improving our service to the public at these parties each year.” The mayor explained that, compared to last year, “As well as Local Police and the National Police, 300 troops would be added to nearly 30 members of the Guardia Civil, more than 100 volunteers from the Association of Civil Protection Volunteers and Emergency Assistance of Anaga, 24 members of the Fire Consortium Tenerife, and several provisions of the Canarian General Police “. However, the presence of the second vice president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Carlos Alonso, addressed the possible changes that may pose for the safety and traffic control, the call for the strike by the workers of the Metropolitan of Tenerife during Carnival. “We have studied the possible solutions in the event that the strike

materializes, thanks to a major boost with the service provided by TITSA, although it will be prudent to wait, once we have all the data in hand, to reassemble the Local Security Board to design the necessary safety device on public transport” The Second Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Safety and Mobility, Carmen Delia Gonzalez, insisted that “if there is a tram strike or not, we have to recommend and promote the use of public transport for those who wish to come and enjoy the carnival, because it gives us safeguards to prevent accidents and casualties in issues regarding road safety.” The mayor and the deputy of the Government insisted that despite the favourable statistics in recent years, “we must not lower our guard, especially when we have verified that the flow to the most popular acts continues to increase,” said Bermudez. Like previous Carnivals, the Guardia Civil will carry out alcohol tests on drivers at the entrances and exits to the city. A new feature this year is the specific criteria regarding closing times, to respect the rules and extensions of time established for kiosks and premises in the area of

the Carnival. During the most important days of the celebrations the main street has authorized that the closure occurs at 06:00 hours, while Friday will

be at 05:00. A special case with socalled after hours, will be required to close its doors at 9:00 am. The council has already submitted the notice of an indefinite strike

starting on February 8 and which will affect every day of the Carnival capital and will continue indefinitely on the first Wednesday of each month from February 17.

Healthy Living Kids Park Reopened Promotion For The Elderly The council of Santa Cruz have announced that the children’s park, Don Quijote, has been reopened within the Pirámides of Guimar site. The old children’s play área has been completley overhauled, and now the park has various attraction aimed at children between the ages of 2–10.

The Cabildo of Tenerife and the Canary Islands Government have signed an agreement to encourage healthy habits for the elderly through workshops and information sessions in the 220 centres and associations within the Ansina program.

Cristina Valido, Minister of Social Action of the City Council, and Jose Diaz Flores, director general of Public Health of the Canary Islands, explained that the activities will be taught by professionals from the Ministry of Health and also provide training in these areas for the fifty professional corporations working in Tenerife. Cristina Valido said that she hoped that over 8,000 seniors will take part in Ansina programme activities, and through them healthy habits can be taught to their families, especially the younger members. The workshops and lectures will promote health habits covering issues such as alcohol, tobacco, exercise and nutrition. They will promote health and provide information aimed

at preventing chronic disease through communication interventions, educational and community participation strategies as part of the Circle of Life of the Health Department. Specifically, the activities will cover six areas: nutrition, physical activity, stress-relaxation, sexual health, alcohol and tobacco. There will also be activities related to the care of older people with specific diseases such as diabetes, obesity, eating disorders, hypertension, mental health and celiac disease.

The children can play in this area as the work has been completed, it is hoped that the reopening of this playground will also help to promote the Piramides as a popular attraction. Island Invaders

By Marc Craig

Last week I did a piece covering some of the more unusual wildlife to be found here, in which I mentioned how we used to regularly spot hummingbirds not indigenous to the Canaries, near our home and it got me thinking-are there other guests, welcome or unwelcome that have decided to make this island home? What I found out was fascinating.

As we all know, Tenerife is dry, it’s rains little and not often, and we have no natural rivers, but did you know that in a ravine at the northern tip of the island, there exists a tropical forest where trees literally drip water from their limbs-water that comes almost exclusively from low clouds condensing on the forest? It’s called Cruz Del Carmen and it’s an area that Charles Darwin was fascinated by, (although he never actually made it here, his “Canary scheme” abandoned by the offer of a place aboard “The Beagle” on a voyage to the Galapagos), it’s an area that more than 100 years later, there is the discovery of a new species or subspecies on average, every 6 days! Indeed, the area has the highest concentration of native species in Europe, 4000+ compared just 100 in the UK! Although due to its unique “forest in the clouds” location the area’s flora and fauna is thriving, there are many other areas of the Canaries where local life is being threatened by invasive species which arrive due to a lack of border checks within the EU. “There is very potent legislation controlling what enters into Europe,” says José Luis Martín Esquivel, a scientist at the regional

Government’s Centre for Environmental Planning in Tenerife, “But there are very weak controls on what crosses the borders within Europe.” this, and the fact that immigrants from the coast of West Africa arrive frequently, scientists estimate an invasive species enters the islands every 17 days, of which one of those “turns into a plague capable of altering native habitats, and seriously threatening native species, an average of once every six months.” Here’s just a few of the new tenants that have decided to take up permanent residence in the Canary Islands. 1: The Barbary Ground Squirrel has flourished in Fuerteventura, decimating local

plant life 2: The Corsica Mouflon. This breed of wild sheep was brought over in the ‘70s and used in the forests for hunting stock 3: The Picudo Rojo Beetle hitched a lift in on imported Palm Trees, are now threatening Canary Date Palms. 4: Several species of “invasive” ant including “Argentine”, “Crazy” and “Garden” leading to a call for an eradication programme. 5: Sea Bass frequently reared in Canarian off-shore fish farms due to their popularity in restaurants, escapees now swim the seas. Cruz del Carmen has a beautiful hiking trail, with plenty of information online.

Letters from Readers

As concerned residents we should like to bring this to your notice. The last natural beach of Los Cristianos past the Arona Gran Hotel is fast becoming the most unattractive unhealthy and possibly dangerous area of the town. Very few people walking the sea front venture past the Arona Gran except as a necessity for residents. This is due to the now permanent siting of people living in mobile dwellings. A recent count totalled 32 mobiles on the beach 6 on the road parking area and 1 on Calle Marea mountainside. There is also a large camp-site on the beach with an open sleeping area opposite the beach entrance, all this despite prohibition signs being evident. This totalled 41 dwellings and at a minimum of 2 persons each meant 82 people as an absolute minimum whose liquid and effluent waste has to be disposed of “obviously” in the sea and beach area. Waste being poured into the road gulley in the entrance to the beach and bottles of urine left at the Paloma Biach rubbish bins is a common site as well as the early morning and evening stench. If the authorities are interested in improving the area and tourist/resident relations this would be a good place to start.

Kings Pay Cut SPaIn’S King Juan Carlos has made cuts in payments to the royal family and is returning his own salary to it’s the levels paid out in 2011 level, officials have said.

Barcelona, Spain. ‘The name Milan (pronounced Meelahn), means dear, loving and gracious in Slavic; in Ancient Roman, eager and laborious; and in Sanskrit, unification...’ ‘The hospital confirmed that the couple’s first child weighed approximately 6lbs. 6 ounces, and that both mother and child are in excellent health.’ The singer took to Twitter four hours earlier to ask her fans to pray for her during the birth of her first child, revealing to them that she was about to go into labour. The She Wolf singer appealed to her fans via Twitter shortly after arriving at the clinic on Tuesday, writing: ‘I’d like to ask you all to accompany me in your prayers on this very important day of my life. Shak.’ She also posted the same content in Spanish and was immediately inundated with messages of support from her fans across the world, wishing her good luck.

It has also been reported that Prince Felipe will also be taking a pay cut to match his 2011 salary, resulting in a 14,007 Euros pay cut for Felipe and a 20,995 Euros cut for the king. Juan Carlos will still receive 292,000 Euros annually and Felipe 146,000 Euros. Carlos made additional cuts worth 54,700 Euros to the rest of the royal fam-

Sources within the Spanish royal household said the king is attempting to cut expenditures, and said there are 27 fewer cars available for use by the royal family, reducing the fleet to 45. Mainland News In Brief Two people were killed when a wall collapsed on them in a storm in Cartagena, south east Spain during nationwide snow and gales. One of the victims was a man in his 40s. Spanish media reported they were both men in their 40s or 50s. The interior ministry issued an alert, warning of snow and rain storms across the country with winds up to 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph) and rough seas in the Mediterranean. National rail operator ADIF said damage caused by wind was forcing delays to high-speed trains linking Madrid with the major cities of Seville and Valencia. In Granada, the workers at the rubbish collection company, Inagra, have called off their strike, after approving in principle, an agreement reached between the company and the strike committee. The workers accepted a previously rejected proposal, for a salary reduction of two and a half per cent for 2013. During the strike, which began on the 7th of January, some two thousand four hundred tons of rubbish have accumulated on the streets of Granada. Yet another Spanish woman has been reunited with her mother 50 years after being abducted as a new born baby, the latest in numerous alleged cases of “stolen babies” from the Franco era. Francisco Franco’s regime allowed children to be taken away at birth if the parents were left-wing opponents or not married. Victims’ groups say the practice continued after his death in 1975. In the latest such case to be resolved, a woman in Valencia who suspected she was a stolen baby lodged a judicial request to find her mother, national police revealed in a statement. After examining hospital records, police identified a woman whom DNA tests revealed to be the biological mother. She had been told by the hospital where she gave birth in 1964 that her baby had died at birth. Spanish judges have remanded two Argentinians in jail who were arrested on suspicion of belonging to a violent far-right group in their Latin American country in 1975. Beatriz Maria Arenaza, 60, and Daniel Alejandro Ullua, 54, were held in La Coruna and in Palma de Majorca respectively. Both had been living in Spain for years. An international arrest warrant had been issued on charges of crimes against humanity. The two allegedly belonged to National University Concentration, or CNU, a group linked to a death squad, Triple A, in the 1970s. Another 20 people are currently under investigation in Argentina in connection with the CNU, which committed attacks, kidnappings and killings. Betfair is expanded its online service in Spain and launching a new Playtech-powered online poker product. Pets Celebrate St. Anthony Feast Day

Various animals including dogs, cats, parrots and farm animals gathered at the Vatican and in churches across Spain last week to be blessed on the feast day of Saint Anthony, the patron saint of animals. Donkeys, pigs, cows and chickens arrived in St. Peter’s Square, as Cardinal Angelo Comastri, general vicar for the Vatican, gave his annual blessing to all God’s creatures. “We’ve always had dogs, it’s time to get them baptised!” said a cheerful Federica Veneto. Bemused looking sheep were kept well away from dogs as dozens of horses with their manes braided pranced up the via della Conciliazione, the main street leading to the Vatican, ridden by police officers or leading colourful horse-drawn carriages. A group of Italian vets was on hand offering free check-ups for pets. In Madrid, animal lovers queued outside the main entrance to the Church of San Anton with their pets on leads or wrapped in blankets in their arms as they waited for a priest to sprinkle their pets with holy water. Many dressed their dogs in their finery for the occasion: coats

to keep out the cold and tying bows in their fur. Jose Martinez, 74, dressed his blonde cocker spaniel Poki in a scarf in colours of the Spanish flag, and a grey sweater. “We brought him here to be blessed to see if he becomes less naughty,” he said, standing in the queue while his pet barked at other dogs waiting nearby. Dogs were the most numerous species but rabbits, hamsters, canaries and other birds were also blessed. Another owner waited with her grey and white parrot, wrapped in a green blanket: “I come almost every year. We are very pleased with her and want her to have a long life,”

Hollywood Comes To Madrid

Hollywood royalty descended on Madrid as Steven Spielberg’s latest film Lincoln premiered at the Casa de America. The 66-year-old director was joined by actor Daniel Day-Lewis, who plays the U.S President and his on-screen wife Sally Field.

Lewis, 55, is possibly about to make movie history if he wins three Oscars for his portrayal of the president just weeks after picking up a Golden Globe. The film documents Abraham Lincoln’s final months in office as he tries to abolish slavery and put an end to the U.S Civil War. Oscar rival Bradley Cooper was also in Madrid the same evening to promote his latest flick Silver Linings Playbook.

she said as she kissed the bird’s beak. As the line of faithful waited for their pets to be blessed, another queue formed outside a separate church door to buy cakes; traditionally kept alongside a coin in a cupboard to be eaten on the feast of Saint Anthony the following year to ensure good health and ensure the blessing of the saint. The cakes are baked according to a secret recipe meant to keep them soft for longer. Alongside pets and their owners, police dogs and guide dogs marched through the streets around the church in the afternoon. The

church celebrated several masses throughout the day in honour of Saint Anthony, with dogs sitting in the pews or on the church floor alongside their owners. The festival has been celebrated in Madrid since the 19th century. It is also held in other parts of Spain such as the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean and the northern city of Burgos. Animals are said to have been instinctively drawn to Saint Anthony throughout his life. Anthony, who was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1195, is often depicted addressing a menagerie of animals attentively listening to his words.

sTolen BABies: A neW inVesTigATion

SPanISH judges have launched a fresh investigation of a nun accused of stealing new born babies during the 1980s. Sister Maria Gomez Valbuena, 87, was the first person to appear before a judge in april last year over the “stolen babies” scandal, in which the then regime allowed children to be taken from their parents on moral or ideological grounds. at the time she was questioned by a judge investigating her role in the kidnapping of a new born girl from a Madrid hospital three decades ago. Now she is accused by another mother, Purificacion Betegon, of taking away her twins in 1981, said the plaintiff’s lawyer, Alipio Barbero. Betegon “in 1981 had twin girls and after she told Sister Maria she did not want to give her daughters up for adoption, she was told they had died,” Barbero said. Francisco Franco’s regime allowed children to be taken away at birth, for instance, if the parents were left-wing opponents or were not married. A hearing set for Friday in the latest case was postponed indefinitely after Sister Maria did not appear on medical grounds; Barbero has asked that the nun be questioned at home if necessary.

Campaign groups such as SOS Bebes Robados and Anadir say hundreds of thousands of babies were stolen under Franco’s rule. They say some 1,500 court cases over such babies have been filed with prosecutors but judges shelved many cases on the grounds that the alleged deeds took place too long ago. In the case in which Gomez was questioned last year, the child’s mother Maria Luisa Torres was reunited with her daughter in 2011; a year after those affected began speaking out about the scandal. Barbero said many people must have been involved in the kidnappings. “Clearly, one person alone could not do all that,” he said.

www.tenerife-weekly.com The Spanish government have launched a social housing plan offering properties at low rents to some families who have been evicted from their homes. Up to 6,000 properties owned by the country’s banks will be offered to the most needy, the government announced. Evictions of those unable to keep up their mortgage payments have become increasingly common and protest and campaigns to help vulnerable families grew last year after the suicides of several people whose homes had been seized. At least 400,000 properties have been repossessed since 2008. Spending cuts and the lengthy recession threaten to exacerbate the problem as unemployment benefits begin to run out. The Spanish government have suspended evictions for two years for families considered most in need since last November, including those with young children, the disabled and the long-term unemployed. The new housing plan is also aimed at the most vulnerable people pushed out of their homes since early 2008, when the property boom ended. This hit Spanish banks hard, forcing the government to seek up to 100 billion euros in European aid for its lenders in 2012 and led to a growing number of repossessions. The Economy Ministry estimated in November that 120,000 families could be in a position to qualify for the low-rent scheme for evicted families, for which condi-

tions are very specific. Single parents with two or more children or families with at least one child under three are among those that might be considered. 5,891 homes are now available, put forward by 33 Spanish banks, including nationalised lenders like Bankia, which offered up the biggest number of properties. The Bank of Spain and local municipalities have also signed up to the plan, called the Social Housing Fund. Campaigners and consumer groups have criticised the measures on evictions taken by Spain, saying they fail to help enough families and do not tackle the root of the problem, poor mortgage-lending practices. They also claim the government has shied away from damaging its lenders too badly by insisting on stringent measures that could hurt their balance sheets. “This moratorium (on evictions) is insufficient as it excludes the majority of people affected through requirements that are arbitrary and discriminatory,” victims support group PAH said in a

King Juan Carlos is facing even more possible embarrassment over the threatened release of 200 emails. One of the emails, which has already been leaked, is said to cause speculation regarding the friendship of King Carlos and German aristocrat Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein.

Sayn-Wittgenstein, who is 28 years junior to the king, first made headlines when it was revealed she was with him on his criticised elephant hunt last year. The emails are in the hands of Diego Torres, a former business partner and alleged co-conspirator in the on-going case of the Kings son-in-law Inaki Urdangarin. In what has been called ‘public blackmail’, Torres has said he will release the 200 emails unless prosecutors spare him jail for the embezzlement charges he faces. He and Urdangarin are accused of embezzling public funds through a non-profit organisation he chaired in Majorca.

Barclays and Germany’s Deutsche Bank, which have big retail operations in Spain, are among those participating in the scheme.

Bad Year For Carrefour

Carrefour has reported an overall turnover of 86,558 million euro in 2012, a 1% increase on 2012. However this figure dropped by 4.1% in Spain, continuing the decline of the past four years. Carrefour saw sales of 9,039 million euros in Spain, but the figure looked even worse in the fourth quarter, where sales of 2,440 million euros meant a drop of 4.8% on the previous year. The company has blamed the Spanish government and the increase in IVA (VAT), which they complained about in October of last year.

Italy is in a similar situation to Spain, reporting a drop of 5.7%, the biggest decline the company had seen there, with total sales of 5,720 million euros. The global picture, however, is better. Sales in Argentina were up by 19.6%, Brazil saw an increase of 1.2%, France saw a 0.1% increase and in Asia sales increased by 10%. Although the figures may be disappointing for the company, they represent a small fraction of the overall business strategy, with new stores continuing to open around the world, as well as incentive and loyalty schemes still being popular, the company is hoping that sales and profits increase in the European market, as they are in South America and Asia.

SPaIn’S ruling centre-right Popular Party have gone on the defensive against a new corruption scandal that threatens to deplete voters’ confidence in politicians, already damaged by the country’s severe economic downturn.

Popular Party secretary general Maria Dolores de Cospedal has “categorically” denied a report that alleged senior party members collected undeclared salaries, mainly from private companies. Cospedal was nominated to the party’s post in 2008 by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, in power since December 2011. The centre-right newspaper El Mundo, cited “five reliable sources of successive management boards of the party, reported that former Popular Party treasurer Luis Barcenas distributed envelopes containing between 5,000 and 15,000 euros to party directors on top of their official salaries over a period of twenty years. “Rajoy, who according to Popular Party sources never touched these complementary payments, ordered Cospedal to put an end to this practice in 2009,” the newspaper said. “The money came from commissions collected from construction firms, insurance companies and anonymous donations.” The beneficiaries were “executive secretaries, elected officials and other members of the party apparatus.” El Mundo’s report comes two days after Spanish media reported that Barcenas, and several others

neW CorruPTion ClAims AgAinsT PP who were not named, have a Swiss bank account credited with 22 million euros. “The Popular Party’s accounts are clear, transparent and inspected by the Court of Auditors,” Cospedal said. “You belong to a great party which defends decency and whoever does something (wrong) pays for it,” she told a gathering of Popular Party members in Almeria.

The latest report however sparked a storm of criticism from voters on social media sites and opposition parties. “Mister Rajoy should provide explanations immediately,” said the head of the main opposition Socialist Party, Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba. Members of Spain’s “indignant” movement, which occupied the main square in Madrid and sev-

eral other cities in 2011 to protest against economic inequality and corruption, have called for a protest outside of the Popular Party’s headquarters later on Friday. “It is like we have broken new ground in the growing divorce between citizens and politicians in Spain” with the successive corruption revelations, said Fernando Vallespin, a political science profes-

sor at Madrid’s Autonomous University. Barcenas was investigated in 2009 as part of a corruption probe involving businessmen with ties to the Popular Party. The successive allegations of corruption involving political parties in Spain have added to concerns in Spain which is fighting recession, debt and unemployment.

Jarramplas Festival

The Spaniards already have some of the most bizarre festivals in the world; the bull running of Pamplona and the biggest tomato fight in the world, but this one definitely deserves a mention. The annual Jarramplas Festival in Piornal involves hundreds of villagers attacking a man dressed in a devils mask with 15,000 turnips. And noone really knows why! A young man is selected from his village to be the ‘Jarramplas’ - the scape goat - and dresses up in a costume made from colourful strips of fabric, wearing a devil-like mask with great horns and nose. The Jarramplas then walks the streets, banging a drum to call out the villagers who gather in their hundreds with armfuls of turnips. They then chase the Jarramplas around the village, pelting him with the rock-hard root vegetables at every opportunity. It is a century’s long tradition, celebrated every January on Saint Sebastian Day in the village in Extremadura, western Spain which has just over 1,500 inhabitants. There are several theories behind the ridiculous tradition, although most point to a connection between the festival and punishing cattle thieves. The

15

theory is that the pelting of the Jarramplas with turnips originates in the punishment and expulsion of a cattle thief by American Indians, witnessed by the first conquerors. Another theory explains that it copies the punishment of the cattle-thieving giant Cacus by Hercules in Greek mythology. Nowadays the Jarramplas is seen as a devil figure and the turnip throwing symbolise the expulsion of everything bad. The Jarramplas Festival is not the only odd celebration in Spain - and surprisingly not the only one which involves throwing vegetables. La Tomatina, an annual food fight in Bunol, Valencia sees thousands of people travel from all over the world to thrown tomatoes at each other. Last year over 50,000 people threw more than 150,000 rotten tomatoes on the streets – a tradition which has been going on since 1945. It is proving so popular that the Spanish Government is threatening to start charge participants to help pay for the cost of the clean up afterwards. Bull runs are held across Spain but the most popular one is the annual run in Pamplona, which is broadcast live on television. About 200-300 people are injured in the Pamplona bull run every year, and 15 people have died since 1910. Most were gored to death by the 18-strong bull heard.

Spain’s Richest Women Lucky Escape

Helena Revoredo, the widow of the founder of Prosegur Cia de Seguridad SA, whose 4,200 yellow armoured vans move more than 300 billion Euros a year, has become one of Spain’s richest women after a surge in the company’s Latin American business attracted investors. Shares of the Madrid-based company have risen 32% in the last year. Revoredo owns half of the operation through holding company Gubel SL, Prosegur Company, and she has a net worth of at least 1.5 billion Euros, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. It is the first time she appeared on an international wealth ranking. Revoredo, was born in Rosario, Argentina. She married Herberto Gut, who founded Prosegur in 1976. The company’s private security services, which included safeguarding cash-in-transit and providing security guards, proved popular after the fall of the authoritarian Franco regime in 1975. In 1987, Prosegur became the first Spanish security company to sell shares in an initial public offering. Revoredo inherited Gut’s stake in the company a decade later, when he died in a car accident. She was named chairman of the company in 2004. Her son, Christian Gut, was named Chief Executive Officer four years later. She is also a director at Banco Popular, Spain’s sixth-largest lender, and owns a 0.3% stake in the company. The bank’s share price dropped 70% in 2012, valuing her stake at 17 million Euros. She

has also collected about 180 million Euros in dividends from Prosegur since 1997. Jorge Alvarez-Naveiro, Prosegur’s head of corporate communications, declined to comment on Revoredo’s net worth calculation. Spain’s richest woman is named as Rosalia Mera, co-founder Inditex SA (ITX) with her former husband, Amancio Ortega, who ranks as the world’s third-richest man. She controls a 3.7 billion Euros for-

tune, according to the Bloomberg ranking. The majority of her wealth comes from her 5% stake in Inditex, the world’s largest clothing retailer and owner of the Zara brand. The Bloomberg Billionaires Index takes measure of the world’s wealthiest people based on market and economic changes and Bloomberg News reporting. Each net worth figure is updated every business day at 5:30 p.m. in New York.

CCTV from an underground station in Madrid has been released showing an off-duty police officer rescuing a woman who fainted and fell onto the rails at the Marques de Vadilla station. The unnamed 38-year-old police officer heard the impact of the body hitting the rails and immediately sprang into action. An incoming train managed to stop before reaching the platform only because the driver realised there was problem when people waved signalling him to stop. The woman, aged 52, was immediately attended to by a doctor who was at the station.

Irish Nanny In Baby Murder Charge

17

Aisling McCarthy Brady, 34, from Quincy, Massachusetts, living illegally in America, has been remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to assault and battery on a one-yearold child causing substantial bodily injury. Immigration authorities said Brady arrived from Ireland in 2002 with a permit to stay for 90 days.

Brady is alleged to have been the sole carer for Rehma Sabir on January 14 - her first birthday - when she suffered injuries “consistent with abusive head trauma”. She died two days later in hospital after suffering brain damage. She was also found to have multiple healing bone fractures. In court documents, police said they found a blood-stained pillow and blanket in a crib and bloody baby wipes discarded in a nappy pail. Further charges are anticipated against Brady following the conclusion of the final report by the Chief Medical Examiner, the district attorney’s office said on its website. Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone said: “This is an extremely troubling case where we allege the defendant violently assaulted a one-year-old child, causing a devastating head injury and broken bones. Through

their investigation, including interviews with witnesses, police determined that the defendant had sole custody of and contact with the child during the time that she sustained injuries consistent with abusive head trauma.” Court documents filed on Tuesday described how a concerned neighbour heard the infant crying for almost an hour before it changed to “extreme crying”, the Associated Press reported. The woman said she knocked on the front door of the apartment for about 90 seconds, timing the knocks in between the baby’s gasping so it would be heard by someone inside, but they were not answered.

Brady’s lawyer told the Associated Press that Rehma’s injuries could have happened at any time, Irish priest, Kevin Fay, from Lavey, Co Cavan, said the family were “wellknown and respected” in the area and that there is no foundation to the charges against Brady. A farmer in Lavey where Brady grew up described her as a very nice girl. But neighbour Tommy Collins siad: “She was just angry, a really angry, angry person. When I found out about this on Tuesday night, the sad part about it was it didn’t surprise me in the least bit.” Rehma’s father reportedly comes from London and her mother from Karachi, Pakistan.

JR In Whodunnit Send Off

It’s a fitting farewell to one of soap’s greatest characters; JR Ewing is to be killed off again, in a whodunnit plot worthy of the 1980 Dallas cliffhanger Who Shot JR? Larry Hagman had already filmed five episodes of season two when he died unexpectedly on November 23, leaving executive producer Cynthia Cidre with the dilemma of finding a fitting end for the ruthless Texas oilman he played.

The character’s funeral will be shown in March in episode eight of the series, which begins on the US TNT channel on Monday. It will air on Channel 5 in the UK later this year. The show’s writing staff, headed by Ms Cidre, has rewritten the entire second half of the season in the light of 81-year-old Hagman’s death. The result is a multi-episode Who Killed JR? mystery that Ms Cidre hopes will rival the wildly popular Who Shot JR? storyline. “We all felt having JR die of natural causes

would have been completely inappropriate, not only to the character, but also to Larry Hagman,” Ms Cidre said. She received the go-ahead for the plotline from JR’s screen brother Patrick Duffy, who plays Bobby, as well as Hagman’s son, Preston. “It will be funny and appropriate to JR, but it will also be sad because his family loved him, as do the fans.” She said writing the plotline was an emotional experience, adding: “I never cried when I was writing but the next day I started to type, and I started crying so hard I couldn’t even see the computer screen.” Two months after Hagman’s death, cast members past and present assembled at the swanky Petroleum Club in Dallas to shoot an epic, drama-filled funeral for JR. Among the mourners were Cliff Barnes (Ken Kercheval), Gary and Lucy Ewing (Ted Shackelford and Charlene Tilton), Ray Krebbs (Steve Kanaly), Mandy Winger (Deborah Shelton) and Cally Harper Ewing (Cathy Podewell). It is also rumoured that Victoria Principal, Bobby’s first wife Pam, will also be there.

WHAT nexT For PrinCe HArry?

PRInCE Harry, third-in-line to the throne is on his way home after a five-month tour of war-torn afghanistan as an apache pilot gunner, where he said his unit took enemy fighters “out of the game”. Prince Harry confirmed during an interview that he killed Taliban insurgents during his latest tour, saying: “We fire when we have to - take a life to save a life.” When asked if he had killed from the cockpit the 28-year-old replied: “Yeah, so lots of people have.”

Tenerife Weekly - 25th January - 31st January 2013

The prince’s job meant he was in the front seat of attack helicopters, controlling an array of weapons including a 30mm cannon and Hellfire Missiles. Captain Wales, as he is known in the Army Air Corps, said the sight of an Apache was often enough to make Taliban fighters flee. “They look at us and just go ‘Right, that’s an unfair fight, we’re not going to go near them. But occasionally we get taken on, even when we are overhead. Take a life to save a life. That’s what we revolve around, I suppose. If there’s people trying to do bad stuff to our guys, then we’ll take them out of the game, I suppose.” Harry’s duties included stints as part of the Very High Readiness (VHR) team at Camp Bastion in Helmand, which meant whiling away the hours playing board games and sleeping fully clothed awaiting a call 24 hours a day. He said his crew got their response time down to just “six-and-a-half or seven minutes”. Once airborne the task could be anything from medical evacuation of a wounded soldier, to firing on the enemy who might have coalition troops pinned down. “Every time you run the aircraft you get that adrenaline rush and then once you’re in the aircraft you’ve got to try and slow yourself down because otherwise, if the adrenaline is pumping too much, if you’re going too fast you’re going to miss something.” 662 Squadron treated their Royal colleague as one of the team, but when the prince had to mix with other soldiers at Camp Bastion in Helmand, he sometimes felt uncomfortable. “I go to the cookhouse and everyone has a good gawp. That’s one thing that I dislike about being here, because there’s plenty of

19

guys in here who’ve never met me and think of me as Prince Harry as opposed to Captain Wales, which is frustrating.” While he enjoyed Army life, the prince described a Taliban attack on the camp last September as a “reality check”. Insurgents broke into the heavily armed base, killing two US marines and wrecking equipment. “This camp is in the middle of Afghanistan so you should expect to be attacked at any point. The guys dealt with it really well and it was on my birthday, so it was a bit of a reality check.” Harry’s first tour of Afghanistan in 2008 was cut short when Australian media unwittingly broke a news blackout, and he had to come home early. He is bitter about being pulled out last time, and would have gone back to his old regiment - part of the Household Cavalry - if he could. However, it was deemed to be too dangerous. “My choice would have been out on the ground with my regiment. That sounds quite spoilt when I’m standing in front of this thing (an Apache helicopter).” Harry and his squadron now plan to spend time “decompressing” - letting their hair down in Cyprus - before flying back home for a few weeks’ leave. After that, Harry’s plans are less clear. “I’ll always be here for my grandmother and whoever needs to send me abroad for whatever reason,” he said. “I don’t really have any plans. This was my main effort to get back out to Afghanistan - that’s another tick in the box. “As to how long I’m going to spend in the Army, who knows? I will continue to bounce between my Army job and the other job.”

The Big Chill Chicago style

200 FIRE fighters turned out to extinguish massive fire at an empty warehouse in Chicago as glacial temperatures turned water to ice. Fire department officials said the blaze was among the biggest in recent years. about a third of the city’s fire fighters arrived on the scene at one point or another. The cause of the blaze in the vacant building is still being investigated. The efforts to put out the fire, which threatened an adjacent building, were made difficult by temperatures that were well below zero, encasing fire trucks and the building into ice. Water froze on the fire fighters’ uniforms and gloves. After the fire was put out, all that remained was ice sheets covering the remains of the building. The American Midwest has been experiencing a cold snap since the weekend, with freezing Arctic air coming from Canada.

More Fatal Shootings In US way to say it, except that we have a horrific crime scene down there that we are working on.” The victims have been identified as Greg Griego, 51, his wife Sarah Griego, 40, and three of their children: a nine-year-old boy, Zephania Griego, and daughters Jael Griego, five, and Angelina Griego, two. All had gunshot wounds to the head. Greg Griego was a pastor and was also well-known throughout the law enforcement community for his work as a voluntary chaplain.

Nehemiah Griego had been having homicidal and suicidal thoughts before shooting dead his parents and three younger siblings at their New Mexico home. The youngster reportedly told authorities he was “annoyed” with his mother. The 15-year-old remains in custody on charges of murder and child abuse resulting in death following the shootings on Saturday night in the rural area southwest of Albuquerque. A Bernalillo County sheriff’s detective questioned the teenager and details of their conversation were released in a statement. Griego allegedly told the detective he took a .22 calibre rifle from his parents’ cupboard and shot his mother in the head while his

younger brother slept next to her. The suspect told the detective his brother did not believe their mother was dead so he showed him her bloody face and then shot him. He is accused of then shooting his two young sisters in their room before taking an AR-15 rifle from his parents’ cupboard and waiting in a downstairs bathroom for his father to come home. The statement said he shot his father multiple times after he passed the bathroom doorway. The teen said he reloaded the guns so “he could drive to a populated area to murder more people”. It said his plan was to “shoot people at random and eventually be killed while exchanging gunfire with law enforcement”. Asked if he had told anyone else about murdering his family, Griego allegedly told the detective that he had taken a picture of his dead mother and sent it to his girlfriend. Police in New Mexico collected evidence from the home and Bernalillo County Sheriff Dan Houston said: “There’s no other

Another shootout, this time at a Texas community college left three people wounded, including the two suspects. Harris County Sheriff’s spokesman Armando Tello said the shooting at the Lone Star College in north Houston was the result of an argument between two people. Carlton Berry, aged 22, has been charged with aggravated assault. Berry and a 24-year-old student, identified as Jody Neal, were both wounded and taken to hospital. A college maintenance man was also injured after getting caught in the cross fire, and a female student was treated for a medical complication. Neal’s relatives said he was taken to Harris Health Ben Taub Hospital Emergency Centre. “All I know he got shot three times. That’s all I know,” Reginald Neal, who identified himself as Jody Neal’s uncle, told KPRC-TV. “He got shot in one of his arms, in the stomach and the leg.” Stacy Neal, Jody Neal’s sister, said: “He was sitting in the study room. There were three people on the computer and a guy walked up the

The grandfather, from Merthyr Tydfil, told Wales Online: “We got hold of his tail and pulled with all our might to get the shark back into deep enough water so that the poor thing could survive. While I was pulling the shark by the tail back into deeper water her 2ft-long babies were swimming through my legs. They must have got lost and marooned by the shallow sand banks and got beached. But the trouble was when we got the shark to just over knee deep it then turned on us and just missed me with a bite which was a fraction away from my leg. A shark that one minute ago was so docile now just nearly took my leg off in a split second - it was that quick.” Holidaymakers and locals watched in amazement as the men tried

to persuade the distressed dusky whaler shark to head back out to sea. Lifeguards on the beach advised the men to stay clear, but in the end the man helping Mr Marshallsea managed to push it out to deeper waters. Lifesaver Luke Turner was on duty at the time said: “A shark beaching itself means one of two things, it wants to die because it is either really sick or because it’s really hungry.” The dusky shark, which can reach 4.2m (14ft) in length and weigh up to 347 kg (765 lb), is considered dangerous to humans and has been known to attack. It has a slender, streamlined body and can be identified by its short round snout, long sickle-shaped pectoral fins, the ridge between its first and second dorsal fins, and faintly marked fins.

Shark Attack In Queensland Foiled

Paul Marshallsea, 62, from Wales, was on a month’s break with his family when a shark swam right up to swimmers and children paddling on the shore on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. So he did what most people wouldn’t even dream of, he helped wrestle the 2m (6ft) shark to stop beachgoers being attacked. A local TV crew, which was on the beach filming another story, captured the moment when Mr Marshallsea and two other men ran into the sea and grabbed the shark in an attempt to get it to swim away. At one point the shark is seen thrashing about in the water as Mr Marshallsea tries to stop it lunging at beachgoers. It eventually breaks free, push-

stairs and opened fire on him. They said it was just one guy that came in with a gun.” Aerial footage from local television stations showed police cars and ambulances parked on the Lone Star College System campus about 20 miles north of downtown Houston. Emergency personnel could be seen tending to people on stretchers, while others ran from a building led by officers. The college issued an alert on its website telling students and staff to take immediate shelter or avoid the campus. The school later announced the campus had been evacuated and would remain closed for the rest of the day. Cody Harris, 20, said he was in a classroom with about six or seven other students waiting for a psychology class to start when he heard eight shots. He and other students looked at each other, said “I guess we should get out of here,”

and fled. “I was just worried about getting out, I called my grandmother and asked her to pick me up.” The Lone Star College System has an enrolment of 90,000 students and six college campuses, according to its website. Along with the college, four nearby schools in the Aldine Independent School District went into lockdown, a district spokesman said. Lone Star student Daniel Flores, 19, said he was in a tutoring lab on the second floor doing homework when he heard six to seven shots. “I didn’t think they were shots,” he said. “It sounded like someone was kicking a door.” About 60 people were in the lab, and they began running out of the room once they realised the sound was gunfire, he said. They fled to a nearby student services centre, where authorities kept them there for about 30 minutes before letting them go.

The sundance Film Festival 2013

THE Sundance Film Festival 2013 kicked off with screenings, a gala and a party to celebrate independent films. However, rather than hosting a starstudded premiere, five separate screenings gave audiences a taste of the diversity that is the festival’s main theme. May In Summer, an East meets West film about a young American woman planning her wedding in Jordan, started off the event, with three other feature films and a programme of short films were also shown on day one. Sundance founder Robert Redford said diversity was “the point” of the annual independent film showcase, held in Park City, Utah. Now in its 35th year, there are contributions from 32 countries and 51 first-time filmmakers. “As long as we go forward and we adapt to change, we keep in touch with our original purpose which is simply to support and develop new voices to be seen and heard,” Redford said at a news conference The purpose of Sundance was to create a platform for low-budget filmmakers and giving people that have experienced life changing events a chance to tell their story. In the past it has helped launch the careers of Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh and Robert Rodriguez,

while such Academy Awards contenders as In The Bedroom, Little Miss Sunshine, Precious and Winter’s Bone premiered at the festival. Asked where independent film would be without the festival, Redford said: “I don’t think it would be as vibrant and healthy if it wasn’t for Sundance. That’s why we’re here,” Redford said. “When somebody comes out of nowhere and with our support goes somewhere, that’s a

real pleasure to me.” This year’s Oscar nominations show the ripple effect Sundance has for highlighting low-budget films. Beasts Of The Southern Wild, which was the top prize winner at Sundance last year, picked up four Academy Award nominations, including best picture, best director for first-time filmmaker Benh Zeitlin and best actress for nine-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis, who had never acted before.

McCartney Advert Tribute To Linda

Sir Paul McCartney has recorded a song for a new TV advert featuring the voice of Elvis Costello for his late wife Linda’s vegetarian food range. The commercial, to be screened later this month, will also feature an animated version of Linda, who died in 1998.

It is thought to be the first time Sir Paul has specifically recorded a tune for an ad, although his songs were made available for licensing to commercials several years ago. The frozen food firm which Linda launched has not advertised on television for the last 15 years. The advert is narrated by music veteran Elvis Costello, who has been a vegetarian since the early 1980s. He follows in the footsteps of his late father Ross McManus - he sang the R White’s theme Secret Lemonade Drinker in the 1970s. Costello said: “Linda always talked well and made it seem that you wouldn’t be joining a secret weird society by being vegetarian.” The ad, to be screened from January 28, was created by the team

that worked on animated projects for The Beatles and Gorillaz and features Linda walking her children to a woodland feast. Fans will be scouring the footage for references to Sir Paul. A sheepdog makes several appearances and could be the dog immortalised in his Beatles tune Martha My Dear, while another figure bears

a resemblance to the Fab Four’s roadie Mal Evans. There is also a musical frog which could be a nod to Sir Paul’s top three hit, We All Stand Together with The Frog Chorus. The song which accompanies the “LoveLinda” campaign ad is a rerecorded version of his song Heart Of The Country, which appeared on 1971 album Ram.

Studio 54 Mementos Armstrong Shame Set Go To Auction For Hollywood

Iconic nightclub Studio 54 Mementos going to auction has renewed nostalgia for the hub of New York’s 1970’s party scene. Photographs, letters and artwork once owned by the club’s A-list guests are among the memorabilia that belonged to late Studio 54 coowner Steve Rubell. The treasure trove will be auctioned off in West Palm Beach, Florida. The auction comes more than 23 years after Mr Rubell’s death from Aids in 1989. The photographs give intimate glimpses into the leisure time of the era’s celebrity elite: Frank Sinatra, Robin Williams, Diana Ross, Sir Elton John and others. Among the most valuable items are a handful of Polaroids taken by artist Andy Warhol. Mr Rubell’s partner, Bill Hamilton, has kept boxes of newspaper clippings, photographs and other items in the couple’s Manhattan apartment, where he still

lives. He said taking another look at the pictures was a reminder of Mr Rubell’s generosity and fun-loving nature. “He really just wanted you to have a good time. And he might have just met you and he invited you into the club, but he was going to make sure you remember it,” he said. These people from 1978, 1979 are still living those nights.”

The auction also has a metal sculpture by Warhol of dollar signs is estimated to fetch up to $37,000 and a portrait of Mr Rubell painted by Michael Vollbracht has an estimated value of up to 15,000 Euros. Drink tickets, posters, invitations and the key to the party fortress itself are also being auctioned. Mr Rubell opened Studio 54 in 1977 with Ian Shrager, and sold it four years later in 1981. It continued operating under different management for years afterward.

Paramount Pictures and producer J.J Abrams’ company, Bad Robot, have announced they are planning a biopic about the disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong. The co-producers have bought the rights to the book Cycle Of Lies: The Fall Of Lance Armstrong by New York Times reporter Juliet Macur, due out in June. The news comes after Armstrong’s muchpublicised confessional interview with Oprah Winfrey. In a two-part interview with Winfrey on her fledgling OWN network, Armstrong has admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs to reach his historic victories, something he had defiantly denied for years. Some 3.2 million viewers in the United States tuned in to see

fallen cyclist’s confession that he was a drug cheat, the TV interviewer’s cable channel said. It was the mostwatched show ever on the network, coming second to Winfrey’s March 2012 conversation with the family of late singer Whitney Houston. The first part of the much-anticipated interview ran against American Idol on the mainstream Fox network, which drew 16.2 million viewers during its twohour broadcast, Variety reported. Entertainment Weekly called the ratings “extremely strong”, but showbusiness trade journal Variety thought the numbers were “below what might have been expected considering the gravitas of the interview”. US TV ratings authority Nielsen said the special “ranked among the top 20 most-watched primetime programmes for the night among all broadcast and cable networks”.

www.tenerife-weekly.com Hundreds of thousands of spectators converged on Washington, and millions more tuned in around the world to witness the ceremonial swearing-in, and to listen live as Mr Obama delivered his inaugural address for the second time. President Barack Obama called for national unity after taking his public oath of office on the steps of the US Capitol to mark the beginning of his second term.

US Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath as the 44th president placed his hand on two Bibles, one used by President Abraham Lincoln at his first inauguration and one used by revered civil rights leader Dr Martin Luther King Jr. After taking the oath, Mr Obama used his speech to call for a divided nation to come together to right the nation’s course, “Now more than ever we should do this as one nation,” he said, adding that Americans are made for this moment and can succeed “so long as we seize it together”. Mr Obama touched on several issues during his speech, laying out an ambitious programme for his coming four years. He urged the country to join him in tackling a vast array of problems, from slowing down climate change to honouring the dignity of men, women and children around the globe. Mr Obama said the country must make hard choices to reduce its massive deficit. “But we reject the belief that America must choose between caring for the generation that built this country and investing in the generation that will build its future,” he said. After delivering his address and listening to patriotic musical selections, including a performance by Beyonce, and a poem written especially for the occasion, Mr Obama went on to savour his final inaugural before walking off the platform. National Mall, filled with hundreds of thousands of people, the president said: “I want to take a look one more time. I’m not going to see this again.” With the ceremonial swearing-in complete, the president and First Lady Michelle Obama took part in a traditional parade before attending formal balls where the presidential couple danced for the cameras. At the ball, Mr Obama paid tribute to America’s military, before praising his wife. “Some may dispute the quality of our president, but nobody disputes the quality of the First Lady,” he said. While Mr Obama was officially sworn in on Sunday, as required by law, the Inauguration Day still enlivened a somewhat staid Washington. The celebration was pushed over to Monday because January 20 fell on a Sunday. That placed the grand ceremony on the US holiday marking the birthday of Dr King. Former US presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter were among the dignitaries seated on the Capitol steps for the event. They are the only living Democrats who have occupied the White House. Mr Clinton was accompanied by his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is departing as Mr Obama’s second term gets under way. The White House photographer released a new official portrait of President Barack Obama, two days before he took the oath of office. Pete Souza’s image shows a smiling Mr Obama standing in the Oval Office. It comes in contrast to the stern pose he struck for his first portrait, taken soon after his election in 2008.

Holy Batmobile! Batman’s iconic Batmobile has been sold at auction for 3m Euros. The original 19ft black, bubble-topped car. created by Hollywood car customiser George Barris for the 1960s Batman TV series was auctioned in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Barris, from Los Angeles transformed a one-of-a-kind 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car into the sleek crime-fighting machine. The car boasted lasers, a Batphone and could make smoke screens and oil slicks. It was still part of his personal collection The Batmobile car was used by Adam West who starred as the Caped Crusader and by Burt Ward,

his sidekick Robin known for exclamations beginning with “Holy”. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Barris constructed the Batmobile in just 15 days in 1966 for 11,000 Euros from a car bought for $1. The winning bidder was Rick Champagne, a businessman and car collector from Phoenix who has been attending Barrett-Jackson auctions for 15 years. Asked by The Hollywood Reporter where he planned to store the car, the new owner joked: “In the living room. I’m going to tear down a wall and put in my living room.” The Batmobile comes close to the highest price fetched for a movie car at auction. In 2010, the Aston Martin DB5 driven by Sean Connery in Goldfinger set the record when it went for 3.4m Euros.

£1.2million olympic Tickets spend out

a BREaKDOWn of the ticket allocation shows how more than £1m in taxpayers money was spent by civil servants, ministers and business chiefs from a variety of private organisations were able to go to both the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games for free. The total expenditure, around £1.2m, far exceeded the £750,000 promised by Sports Minister Hugh Robertson back in 2011. Ministers were at some of the most popular events of the Games, including cycling, athletics and diving. Tickets for these were extremely difficult for the public to secure because the ballot system was so complicated and prices were prohibitive. Questions have been asked about the timing of the list’s release, given that attention is currently focused on the hostage crisis in Algeria, hinting that the report would not get too much coverage. Labour MP John Mann told The Telegraph: “People will be very cynical about the Government doing this now when everyone is rightly concentrating on what is happening in Algeria. It is yet another attempt by successive Governments to bury bad news.” The Government actually bought 8,641 tickets. Around 4,000 of those, worth £916,000, were paid for and distributed by central Gov-

ernment. 2,381 were bought by staff who had worked long-term on the Games or as Ambassadors. Local authorities in London bought up another 2,020 from the Government and the tourism organisation Visit Britain bought 224. Lord Sassoon, a former Treasury minister, received the most expensive ticket among his colleagues - a

£725 seat at the athletics. Foreign Office minister Alistair Burt was given the most tickets, running up a bill of £605 for watching two cycling events, diving, football and gymnastics. Commons Speaker John Bercow was given two tickets for the tennis that totalled £145 and a number of backbenchers from across the parties also used Government-funded

tickets. Another £349,153 was spent on Government-hosted receptions before the opening and closing ceremonies for the Olympics and Paralympics. The list does not include free tickets given to David Cameron, Nick Clegg and other senior figures by organisers Locog or visits paid for

by companies and sponsors. In a written ministerial statement Culture Secretary Maria Miller said: “All invitations were issued against criteria agreed by the Cabinet Secretary in May 2012. These were: encouraging growth, encouraging health and sports participation, encouraging community engagement and volunteering.”

www.tenerife-weekly.com Lindsay Sandiford, a 56-year-old grandmother has been sentenced to death for drug smuggling on the Indonesian island of Bali, breaking the country’s strict drug laws..

Sandiford, originally from Redcar, Teeside, was arrested in May 2012 at Bali airport when customs officers found 3.8kg of cocaine worth £1.6m in her luggage. She claimed she had been forced to smuggle the drugs into Bali from Thailand by a criminal gang. At her trial in December, prosecutors announced that they would be recommending a 15-year prison sentence, as she agreed to co-operate in a sting operation in which police swooped on four other suspects, including British nationals Rachel Dougall, Julian Ponder and Paul Beales. However when delivering their verdict, the judge panel headed by Amser Simanjuntak said that Sandiford had damaged the image of Bali as a tourism destination and weakened the government’s programme of drug annihilation. “We find Lindsay Sandiford convincingly and legally guilty of importing narcotics,” said Simanjuntak. In her witness statement, Sandiford said: “I would like to begin by apologising to the Republic of Indonesia and the Indonesian people for my involvement. I would never have become involved in something like this but the lives of my children were in danger and I felt I had to protect them.” Amelia Rose, a local journalist, was in court at the sentencing: “She was in shock, but she managed to hold her composure and stand up while the judge read out her sentence,” she said. “Her eyes turned red from tears for a second but she managed to hold her composure again. There is still a long way to go before an exe-

Low Flying Bucket

A bucket of cleaning solution fell off a US military helicopter and smashed through the roof of a car shop near the Miramar Air Station in San Diego. Marine Corps spokesman Lieutenant Tyler Balzer said the five-gallon bucket had been strapped down inside an Osprey aircraft but it had somehow become loose and slid out shortly after take-off. He added that while mistakes do happen, this is “an opportunity for us to look at the already good safety measures we have in place for flying here in San Diego and improve on it”. The bucket plunged through the roof of the shop, which was fortunately closed at the time, and nobody was injured. It clipped one vehicle and left several others covered in the cleaning solution. Mr Balzer said the shop owners can file a claim with the Marine Corps for restitution.

cution can take place. She can appeal to the High Court then the Supreme Court in Jakarta. If she can present new evidence she can have a judicial review. Then there is also the chance of clemency with the President”. A spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “We can confirm that a British national is facing the death penalty in Indonesia. We remain in close contact with that national and continue to provide consular assistance. The UK remains strongly opposed to the death penalty in all circumstances.” Co-defendant Rachel Dougall, whose young daughter is apparently being cared for by a maid and gardener on the island, has claimed she was the victim of a “fit-up”. Reprieve, a charity which seeks to enforce human rights for prisoners, said Sandiford was targeted by drug traffickers. Spokeswoman Harriet McCulloch said: “Lindsay was targeted by drug traffickers who exploited her vulnerability and made threats against her children. Following her arrest, she was interrogated by the Indonesian police without a translator, legal representation or the assistance of the British Embassy for 10 days. A statement by Dr Jennifer Fleetwood, an expert on the coercion of women in the international drug trade, was also read out, which suggested that Sandiford’s “vulnerability” would have made her an ideal target for drugs traffickers. “There is evidence to suggest that a trafficker would seek someone who was vulnerable. Having reviewed extracts from Lindsay’s medical records I know that Lindsay has a history of mental health issues. This may have unfortunately made her an attractive target for threats, manipulation and coercion by one or more parties over a period of time, which led to her being stopped at Ngurah Rai International Airport”.

Stansted Airport Sold Off

The company formerly known as BAA is selling Stansted airport to the Manchester Airports Group for £1.5bn. The deal means that BAA, now known as Heathrow Airport Holdings, will be responsible for just four UK airports, Heathrow, Southampton, Aberdeen and Glasgow, compared with its original seven.

Chief executive of Heathrow, Colin Matthews, said: “Stansted Airport and its people have been part of our company for a long time. It has been named by passengers as ‘the world’s best airport for low-cost airlines’ for two consecutive years at the Skytrax World Airport Awards, and we are proud of its achievements. We wish the new owners every success and are confident the airport will continue to flourish. We will

continue to focus on improving Heathrow, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Southampton airports.” Heathrow Airport Holdings have been forced to sell the airport after a ruling by the Competition Commission last year. The company did not challenge the decision in the Supreme Court but maintained that the ruling “fails to recognise that Stansted and Heathrow serve different markets”. The sale of

Britain’s third busiest airport is expected to be completed by the end of February Manchester Airports Group owns and operates Manchester, East Midlands and Bournemouth airports. It was one of the bidders for Gatwick when BAA put it up for sale but it lost out to American private equity group Global Infrastructure Partners which now also runs Edinburgh.

The turning point in his career came in 1972 when he directed Marlon Brando in The Nightcomers. But it was Death Wish starring Charles Bronson which was seen as his most famous work and at the time was seen as incredibly shocking. In later years, he reinvented himself as a restaurant critic, writing about food in his typically flamboyant style, his Winner’s Dinners column for The Sunday Times was both feared and revered. The column lasted for twenty years. He had a reputation for being both humorous and very cantankerous. Restaurant owners whose establishments he visited dreaded him coming in because he did not hold back in those columns. Winner, infamous for his low grade comedy appearances in adverts for motor insurance which coined the catchphrase “Calm down dear, it’s only a commercial”, what is less known is that he also founded and funded the Police Memorial Trust following the murder of WPC Yvonne Fletcher outside the Libyan embassy in London in 1984. More than 50 officers have since been honoured by the trust at sites across the country. Steve Lloyd, trust manager, said: “There is no doubt that Michael’s work will be continued, and we at the Trust pass on our sympathies to his family at this sad time. The work he did on behalf of the policing family bought a lot of comfort to those he recognised.” In 2006, it emerged that Winner had been offered an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his part in campaigning for the Police Memorial Trust. Winner, who was given 18 months to live by liver specialists last October, suffered several health scares over the years. In February 2003, he spent two nights in Cromwell Hospital in London as a result of a heart condition. In 2006 he started on a diet and wrote a book entitled The Fat Pig Diet in which he claimed to have lost four stone eating caviar, chocolate, cake and Doritos. The simple message he was putting across was: “Eat what you like - but eat less of it”. Last year he revealed he had researched the possibility of ending his life at the Dignitas clinic in Switzerland. He said: “I checked Dignitas on the computer and you need to go through so much. gillian’s out!

OSCaR-WInnInG uS actress Hilary Swank is the latest celebrity victim to have her handbag snatched in Paris by thieves who smashed the window of the taxi she was in.

As in the case of Naomi Campbell a couple of weeks ago, smash-and-grab robbers pounced on the taxi as it got stuck in traffic in the northern suburb of Saint-Denis on Friday morning, a police source said. They broke the window of the back seat and snatched Swank’s designer bag from her hands. Drivers and passengers are said to often fall victim to robberies in the Paris suburb which suffers from regular traffic jams. Swank, 38, has been awarded two Academy Awards for her role in the 1999 film Boys Don’t Cry and the 2004 movie Million Dollar Baby.

By Marc Craig Last Friday saw our celebrity pal, the lovely Gillian Taylforth booted out of the Celebrity Big Brother house.

In a shocking twist, Big Brother played to the other housemates a recorded conversation between Ryan and Razor, in which Ryan suggests if they want to stay in the house ‘til the end they should “vote for the girls”. this was considered to be a breach of the rules and as punishment, all of the housemates were up for eviction, leading to Gillian losing the public vote, which left the rest of

the housemates stunned and speechless. In a tearful exit interview she told Big Brother presenter Brian Dowling, “Obviously I’m not that popular! Perhaps I got on people’s nerves?” Unfortunately it just seems she didn’t make as much of an impression on the public as some of the other housemates did, leading to one of the tabloids labelling her “a lovely lady... just a tad dull.” Not at all, we think you’re fab Gillian!! The Weinstein Company, financiers of Quentin Tarantino’s spaghetti western style movie “Django unchained”, have withdrawn from several sites including amazon, a collection of 8 inch figurines depicting characters from the movie after civil rights campaigners and black activist movements branded them as “slavery mocking” dolls. The range includes dolls of Samuel L. Jackson’s character,

Action figures have been created for all of Quentin’s films, including Inglourious Basterds, and as a matter of course [were] produced for Django Unchained as well. Last week I reported on the end of Swift and Styles and although, according to most reports it seems they’re unlikely to get back together, (like ever!) rumours abound that a certain Mr Cowell has given his little mop-head a talking to, advising Harry to “clear the air” with Taylor. Apparently, Simon was worried that any bad feeling the US public had towards Styles over his dumping of Americas sweetheart Swift, could affect the popularity of his enormous cash cow “One Direction”-yeah Simon, times are hard for you, you couldn’t stand to lose any of the gazillions “OD” are likely to make for you!! Also this week, Canada’s contribution to the worldwide rise in earplug sales, my favourite pop princess, Justin Beiber is in the news due to the latest split with his on/off girlfriend Selena Gomez. After a huge bust-up

whilst vacationing in Mexico, this split seems to be permanent and in typical celebrity style they are both very publicly dealing with their feelings through the medium of song-the very same song!! Both artists have performed versions of the Justin Timberlake song “Cry Me A River” a song which the “trousersnake” originally wrote about his breakup with Britney Spears (the video features Timberlake’s character spying on his ex-lover, a

Britney lookalike). Of course, although no one really expected either of them to write a poignant breakup song of their own, it has sparked a lively debate online as to who does the best version. And the winner is..... Justin Timberlake of course!!! Timberlake! (54%) Justin Bieber (16%) Selena Gomez (30%) It would’ve been closer but most Beiber fans couldn’t get the child lock off the Internet!!!

Con Artists making A Comeback

OLD style con artistry is on the increase with cheque and procurement fraud as well as Ponzi scams all making a comeback. While in recent years, the spotlight has been on rogue traders and ‘super’ fraud cases, KPMG has found a surge in the number of individuals swindling employers, banks and the government. The latest bi-annual Fraud Barometer reports that insider fraud is hitting corporations hard while more individuals are over-claiming benefits and evading tax. Cases include a finance department employee who stole hundreds of thousands of pounds – leading to the closure of the company she worked for. In another case, a family used false identities to claim £2.2m in HIV medica-

tion - which was then shipped to Africa and sold at a profit. Identity fraud has more than doubled in value from 2011 to £26.3m, while counterfeit goods fraud was three times the five-year average at £22.9m. Ponzi Schemes worth £72m were taken to court, three times the level seen in 2011 and procurement fraud increased to £21.4m in 2012. Hitesh Patel, UK Forensic Partner at KPMG, said: “In the last few years we have become used to sophisticated frauds at eye-watering values. While the total value of fraud has dropped substantially in the absence of socalled fraud ‘super’ cases, the old-fashioned con man hasn’t given up his tricks. Times may be tough but the data shows that some people are unwilling to give up the lifestyles they’ve become accustomed to.” Fraud by either management or employees accounted for 80% of financial loss through fraud experienced by UK businesses in 2012.

Employee fraud cases rose to 35 in 2012, up from 22 the year before, with their value doubling from £12m in 2011 to £25.1m over the past year. Tax evasion or benefit fraud cases rose to 15 from three in 2011. Mr Patel said: “Tax evasion is one of the hot topics of the moment but an increasing assault on the social welfare budgets, particularly benefit fraud, is a real and increasing threat for the government, as shown by the latest figures. Fraudulent actions of individuals in both the public and private sectors exacerbate the need to make cuts in the first place and cause more than just monetary loss: jobs can be lost and already tight government budgets are stretched further, with implications for the delivery of services.” The report also found a fall in the number of cases carried out by professional criminals, from 98 at the end of 2011 (valued at £1.4bn) to 79 in the 12 months to December 2012 (valued at £414m).

Sharples in Session By John Sharples

From The Horses Mouth!

For some unknown reason, last week’s news that horse meat had been found in burgers at Tesco and various other supermarkets sparked a flurry of jokes on the internet. Facebook was full of the funnies and so here are my top ten. 1. 99% of people in the UK say they haven’t been affected by eating horse meat. That’s according to a gallop poll 2. 29% of the meat content in Tesco’s hamburgers turns out to be horse?! No wonder they gave me the trots! 3. Are you in favour of Horsemeat in your burgers? Yay or Neigh? 4. I expect this only relates to those mini-burgers you have as snacks.

You know the horse d’oeuvres. 5. A cow walks into a bar. Barman says ‘why the long face?’ Cow says ‘Illegal ingredients, coming over here stealing our jobs!’ 6. I’ve heard these burgers were aw-foal. 7. I thought it was odd when I asked the price of a packet of burgers and the assistant said “3 to 1 on”. They’ll just have to ride it out, let it run its course. This is caused by the supermarkets jockeying for position. Apparently Tesco have asked for a load of other fences to be taken into consideration. 8. Despite the news of horse meat burgers a Tesco spokesman has said that burger sales have been stable 9. Horsey Horsey, Don’t you stop, Or you’ll end up in a Tesco Shop, Your tail goes swish and the wheels

go round, Giddy up you’re a quarter pound 10. Traces of zebras found in Tesco barcodes Eating horse meat isn’t illegal in Britain or Spain. In the early part of the 20th century it wasn’t taboo, but over the years, many people have become repulsed by it. I’ve tried horse and I wasn’t that fussed about it. I quite like kangaroo, but there has been a price jump recently. I will stick my neck out and say that ostrich meat is delicious and we eat it regularly. The issue here wasn’t whether you should eat horse meat, but that you should be fully aware of what you are eating. The fact that mushrooms may contain maggots and chicken nuggets probably contain bleach doesn’t seem to worry anyone. It’s a funny old world!

On Yer Bike Mate!

Shamed drug taking cyclist, Lance Armstrong has recently appeared in two interviews with Oprah Winfrey confessing his guilt and showing his remorse for what he did. The Interviews are incredibly touching and compelling viewing as he fights back the tears recounting the effect that his lifetime ban and the revelations have had on both his career and his family. He says that his mother has been affected deeply by the revelations that he cheated by taking drugs. He feels that the lifetime ban on all sports is too harsh and hopes that he will be given a reprieve.

Well, I hope he doesn’t get a reprieve. This man didn’t only cheat to win, he deprived all those people who worked hard and played fair from winning. All those people over the years that came second best to this cheat, who never got the top accolades for what they did, although they all deserved to win. I am sure that things are tough for him. I am sure that he feels terrible remorse about what he did. What if he had never been caught out? Would he have come forward? Would he have felt that remorse then? I can’t answer those questions. All I can say is ... If you do the crime, you should do the time. As far as I’m concerned, the ban is

completely just. He is a cheat. He duped everybody. He was thought of as one of the great sporting heroes, whose name would have lived for all time. Now he will be remembered as one of the cleverest cheats that sport has ever come across. I can’t help feeling sorry for him, but he must never be allowed to compete again. Life is full of great people who were the masters of their own destruction and he is the latest. He will make fortunes with his autobiography, but his sporting career is now over and some may feel that it is about time too, especially those who came second in the races that he won!

Snow Joke How can it be that Britain seems to come to a halt when it snows a bit! Schools close and trains stop running and people can’t get to work etc. I was speaking to a lady who comes from Finland. Where she lives, the temperature is -17 degrees at the moment. She told me that when there is heavy snow, life carries on as normal. The roads are kept clear and they ski to work in the dark with lamps attached to their heads. The accompanying photograph shows a road in Norway that has been cleared so that traffic can get through. In these times of extreme weather, local councils need to be better prepared to deal with the situation. Every work day that is lost is money lost to the government and that money will have to be found elsewhere. Britain has been grinding to a halt on a regular basis for years. Why hasn’t anyone learned from this and put in a proper plan of action?

of Disgraced sophiya Haque return galliano Dies Aged 41 DISGRaCED John Galliano is returning to the fashion industry with a temporary role at Oscar de la Renta’s new York studio. The British designer, once heralded as one of the most talented names in fashion, was sacked in 2011 by Dior after being caught on camera making antiSemitic remarks. He will be working for three weeks with de la Renta in preparation of the new York Fashion Week show.

FORMER Coronation Street and Bollywood actress, Sophiya Haque, has died, only weeks after she was diagnosed with cancer. The 41-yearold first made her name playing Rovers Return barmaid Poppy Morales in 2008 until 2009. up until Christmas she had been appearing in the West End production of Privates on Parade. Haque’s partner, David White, confirmed she had passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday evening. Managing director Stuart Piper, of Cole Kitchenn, the agency which represented the actress said: “one of the most inspirational people I ever met. She was the kind of person you always want to spend time with. Full of light, warmth, compassion, care and with an infectiously wicked sense of humour, and I loved every minute of working with her.” He added: “On stage, it was like you were watching her in close-up even if you were sat at the back of the stalls; such was her star presence and charisma.” Michael Grandage, who appeared with Haque in Privates on Parade, also paid tribute to the Portsmouth-born actress. The award-winning theatre director said he was “devastated” by her death and described her performance in the production as “glorious”. “The company would like to dedicate the remaining perfor-

mances to her memory,” he added. Haque worked alongside some of the biggest Bollywood names after her move to India in 1997, and worked as a presenter on MTV Asia. Her return to the UK in 2002 saw her appear in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Bombay Dreams and a musical version of The Far Pavilions. She also had a part in 2008 film Wanted, starring Angeline Jolie, James McAvoy and Morgan Freeman.

“He has worked long and hard on his recovery, and I’m happy to give him the opportunity to re-immerse himself in the world of fashion and re-acclimate in an environment where he has been so creative,” de la Renta said. He said he had known Galliano for many years and added: “I’m a great admirer of his talent.” Galliano, 52, blamed an addiction to drugs and alcohol which caused him to lose control, and that he was de-

termined to make amends. A French court handed him a 6,000 Euros suspended fine after finding him guilty of anti-Semitic behaviour. In a statement he said he has been in recovery for alcoholism for the past two years but that he had previously “descended into the madness

of the disease. I said and did things which hurt others, especially members of the Jewish community. I am grateful to Oscar beyond words for inviting me to spend time with him in the familiar surroundings of a design studio. His support and faith in me is humbling,” he added.

THROUGH THE KEYHOLE By Colin Haydon

Life’s a Beach with this Beautiful Apartment Ask anyone in Tenerife to name the best beach and they’ll probably say El Duque beach in Fanabe. Managed by the 5 star Bahia Del Duque hotel, it is scrupulously cleaned every morning. The sun beds have thick padded cushions and the pretty blue and white beach huts are a lovely feature. As well as the Bahia and the Mirador hotel next door, everything about the area is top class and oozes style and quality. Across the street is the modern Plaza Del Duque shopping centre, where shops such as Cartier and Escada tempt not only the rich and famous but tourists and residents to part with their euros.

Right on the beach front, in the heart of this most up-market area of Tenerife stands El Beril. It’s a beautifully stylish complex, very much in keeping with its surroundings. Manicured gardens and a large heated pool, as well as it’s proximity to the very best Tenerife has to offer, have made it a sought after location for prospective buyers on the island. message in A Bottle 76 years on

a MESSaGE in a bottle found 76 years after it was thrown into the sea has been reunited with the family of the man who wrote it. The bottle was found on a beach in new Zealand by Geoff Flood in november 2012, but it had actually been thrown into the sea in 1936.

Inside was a note, dated March 17, which said: “At sea. Would the finder of this bottle kindly forward this note, where found, date, to undermentioned address.” Underneath the note was written the name: “H E Hillbrick, 72, Richmond Street, Leederville, Western Australia”. The message had been written on headed paper which had the mark of the shipping company P&O and the ship’s name SS Strathnaver, a British Royal Mail Ship that carried people between England and Australia, but which also travelled between ports in Australia at the time. Mr Flood had been walking on Ninety Mile Beach at the top end of New Zealand’s North Island when he made the discovery. He told local media he was astonished and

decided to find out how the bottle had got there. He said: “As I picked it up and started looking, I could see it was an old envelope with P&O on it and I thought this might be something special. There was a bit of mad panic to carefully extract it. I carefully cut a couple of bits of wire and quietly wound it up with the bits of wire so we didn’t damage it. Who knows where it’s been. How many times around the world, you just wouldn’t know, would you?” It took him a couple of months to trace the sender, who turned out to be a man called Herbert Ernest Hillbrick. Sadly, Mr Hillbrick died in the 1940s, but further investigation led Mr Flood to Herbert’s grandson Peter Hillbrick, who was living in Perth, Western Australia.

Peter Hillbrick, who was also amazed by the discovery, said: “For this one to be floating around in the ocean for 76 years and just all of a sudden pop up in New Zealand. Where has it been? What story is it going to tell?” His only theory was that his grandfather had dropped it into the sea during a P&O cruise. His family still have photos that Herbert and his wife Ethel took on board the ship. He said that because his grandfather had died so many years ago, he had never got to know him so was delighted another link had turned up. “The only connection I have with Grandfather is now that bottle. That’s about all. So, it’s a fascinating story,” he said. Mr Hillbrick has donated the bottle to a maritime museum in New Zealand.

Irish cream fudge

Who doesn’t like a bit of fudge? Well I’m a massive fan and it is one of the easiest things you can make. There are so many variations. You can make it with nuts, fruit, dark chocolate the list goes on and on. This great recipe for Fudge has a creamy, silky smooth texture that is easy to whip up as a holiday treat or special gift. If you need a bit of pampering for yourself, this fudge recipe we will take you away.

Ingredients 250g sugar 250g Demerara sugar 500ml double cream 50ml Classic Irish cream 200g white chocolate

Method:

Line a tin about 20cm square with non-stick paper. Put the granulated and Demerara sugar, the double cream and the Irish cream in a large saucepan. Slowly bring the mixture to the boil, stirring all the time, making sure the sugar has dissolved before bringing to the boil. Boil on a steady light for 15 minutes. To test that the fudge is ready, drop some of the mixture into a glass of cold water. When it forms a solid drop it is ready. Break up the white chocolate and add to the fudge, take the pan off the heat and stir until the chocolate is melted and combined. Pour the fudge into the tin allow to set and then score into cubes.

Pugh’s Secret Tip:

The Craziest Restaurant Names!

I once visited a restaurant in Pattaya, Thailand and had the most wonderful evening meal there. It was called ‘Cabbages & Condoms’ – the funniest part of the evening was; when we paid our bill instead of being given a mint or small liquor, we received condoms!!! But, it got me thinking – what other strange restaurant names are out there? (There are some very rude ones but I have left them out!) Lettuce Souprise You: A vegetarian restaurant in Atlanta, USA. Thai – Tanic: A Thai noodle bar in Belfast,Eire Phat Phuc Noodle Bar: A Vietnamese restaurant in London, UK. Amy’s Winehouse: A winery in Sunderland, UK. Nin Com Soup: A Vietnamese eatery in London, UK. The Meat’In Place: A butchery in Kent, UK. The Rock & Sole Plaice: A fish and chip shop in London, UK. Pu Pu Hot Pot: A Chinese restaurant in Cambridge, USA. Booty’s House of Crabs: A seafood restaurant in Ocean City, USA. The Golden Stool: Ghanaian restaurant in London, U.K.

Why use Irish cream? Swap the white chocolate for a good dark chocolate and use dark rum, Kahlua, Tia Maria or even Brandy the list is endless!

Family from hell Maid of Honour Madness

I’m terrified of my ex boyfriend’s family. They’re a really notorious family and lately they’ve started making threats about our son. They’re saying they’re going to get my son taken off of me so that he can go and live with them. They’ve made endless complaints to social services about me, and every time they come and check me out they say that I’m not doing anything wrong. But now his parents say they’re going to take me to court to get full custody of our son. I’m scared and can’t afford a solicitor but will do anything to keep my son. Angie

Social Services have no alternative but

to investigate each and every allegation Angie and, as sad as it sounds, that’s the only way to go in this day and age. Dependent upon your financial circumstances, you may qualify for legal aid to help you fight off this obviously ridiculous attempt by your ex`s parents to take your boy away from you. Ring round some local solicitors and find one that works under the legal aid scheme. Usually, the initial consultation is free and from that point on, you’ll know where you stand legally. This whole affair sounds like an on-going attack and as they’ve gotten nowhere with Social Services, it sounds like this family want to up the ante a little. Just do your best to stay cool, so far, you have been more or less approved by Social Services a number of times so you’re obviously not doing anything wrong as far as being a mum goes. If this family are as bad as you say, they will be well known to Social Services, the police and probably the courts so from where I’m sitting, it doesn’t look like they have a cat in hells in chance of gaining custody of your son. Speak to a solicitor as soon as possible and try not to worry.

My best friend has recently got engaged and asked me to be the maid of honour. I jumped at the chance and was so excited to be helping with the plans. The reality however is a nightmare. She is so demanding and insisting that I come to hers every night after work to scour magazines and the internet and every weekend we are visiting venues. I thought this was supposed to be fun, but I’m worried it’s going to ruin our friendship!

Kirsty Have you tried talking to your mate? I bet you haven’t! This is her big day and she’s bound to be really excited as I’m sure you are. Expecting you to dedicate every waking hour to making things right for her is a little unreasonable though. Sit down and have a chat about how you’re feeling. You may be pleasantly surprised by your friend’s reaction. Right

Can’t Escape the Commune

Twenty years ago I lived in a religious sect in one of their communes. While I was there an elder, who I thought was a kind person, assaulted me physically and told me I was worthless. This still affects me today and I don’t trust anyone and can’t form relationships with people. I’d love to meet a man and settle down but this is really holding me

back. How can I re-build my life? Heather

If after twenty years you’re still so deeply affected by your experiences, I would say you need some real and constructive help Heather. Sometimes people write to me for answers and its clear that they need more than I can give here in the pages of a newspaper. This

is one of those times so, counselling is definitely the way forwards for you and once you get the ball rolling, things will start to change for you. It’s not an easy process and there are no “quick fix” solutions but it will signify the start of a new era for you in terms of how you live your life and how you feel about yourself.

now, her head is filled with anticipation and worry over the most important day in her life. She’s been carried away by the whole thing and could probably do with someone just like you telling her to slow down and take things a little easier.

If you really are close friends, a simple heart to heart should do the trick. If, at the end of the day, she insists that you carry on devoting masses of time to planning her wedding, you’ll have be firm and start saying no occasionally!

Scared to go Shopping

I live in sheltered housing accommodation and a while ago another resident’s daughter attacked me. She slapped me and punched me so badly I ended up in hospital. But I made the mistake of not pressing charges and the verbal abuse has continued since then. I’ve had a personal alarm fitted in my flat and wear another one round my neck but I’m terrified to go shopping or leave the flat on my own. She’s ruined my life and has even damaged some of the other residents belongings, but now her daughter is blaming me. I’m so scared what she’ll do next. Linda It’s never too late to report a crime like this Linda, especially if the culprit is still making your life a misery. Pick up the phone and speak to your local police, bullies like this woman can’t be allowed to run riot in our

society. Obviously your confidence has taken a huge knock but once you’ve reported this crime, I think you’ll find that it will come back a little at a time. The alternative is to let this wretched woman pretty much run your life and as you’ve already found, that’s not pleasant at all! Talk to friends and relatives and ask them to start accompanying you to the shops for a while until you feel safe enough to venture out alone. Things like this always take time to get over but with a little patience and perhaps a touch of courage, you can get through. Speaking to the police will send a clear message that you’re not prepared to take this lying down and you won’t be a prisoner in your own home. The law is on your side Linda but you have to ask for their help before they can help you.

THE HURT LOCKER Channel 4 - 22:00 - 00:40 Kathryn Bigelow’s multiple-Oscarwinning film is a compelling factbased, Iraq-set bomb disposal drama, scripted by journalist Mark Boal, who drew upon his experiences while embedded with a US Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team in 2004. The film focuses on the complex characters that make up Bravo Company, who disable and destroy improvised explosive devices. The days are ticking down to the end of the bomb squad’s tour, but the team are in harm’s

way around the clock. And it doesn’t help that one of the team (Jeremy Renner) is addicted to risk taking and pays scant attention to standard procedure, putting other lives in danger, as well as his own. The Hurt Locker provides a tense glimpse into the lives of these extraordinary men, and also probes the various psychologies of people whose job could kill them at any moment, as well as - briefly - exploring how they cope once away from their adrenalinesoaked vocation.

Mrs Brown’s Boys

BBC 1 - 21:30 - 22:00 It’s a stressful day for Agnes, as everything seems to be happening all at once. Rory and Dino have had a huge falling out, and Mark and Betty have got their emigration visas and are off to Australia. In fact, it seems like the only thing not happening is Buster starting work on Agnes’ new kitchen… possibly because he’s been too busy purloining a new smartphone for Dermot. Cathy becomes suspicious after a secretive Agnes takes a phone call from a solicitor. After some investigating, Cathy discovers that the solicitor’s

43

firm specialises in adoptions and before long Agnes’ children are all left wondering who is really a Brown after all. There’s a shock for Cathy as a blast from the past appears out of the blue. Meanwhile, another familiar face turns up at the Brown household as Father Quinn returns from rehab to ask Agnes to volunteer at his annual Garden Party. However, with Dermot’s new smartphone distracting her, Agnes struggles to get her answer out… Agnes is in for a huge surprise when Rory and Dino finally patch things up. However, it appears that Mark and Betty have some even more surprising news…

DEREK Channel 4 - 22:00 - 22:30 Meet Derek Noakes (Ricky Gervais) a tender, innocent man whose love for his job and the people he cares for shines through. He’s 49 years old and loves animals, Rolf Harris, Jesus, ‘Deal or No Deal’, ‘Million Pound Drop’ and ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ - but his main hobby is autograph hunting.

He works in a retirement home with his mate and landlord, Dougie (Karl Pilkington in his very first acting role). Derek cares deeply for old people because they’re kind and funny and tell him stories about

the olden days. Hannah (Kerry Godliman) is a care worker at the home and is Derek’s best friend. She’s smart, witty and hardworking, but unlucky in love, and like Derek, always puts other people first. In this week’s episode, the retirement home’s future comes under threat after a visit from the local council reveals the latest budget cuts are going to have a negative impact on funding. As a result, the councillors decide to conduct an inspection to see whether there are any necessary changes that can be made, such as ‘streamlining’ the number of employees, in order to keep the home open despite the current economic climate.

Oasis 2 V 8 Trap Door In the press recently, Noel Gallagher said God would let him into heaven when he dies, because God loves Oasis. The Trap Door may have overcome the home team, but look out for Noel, because this place is heaven, fantastic nights, great hosts, come for a drink at this place. It is, truly heavenly! (W. T. F. .......ED ! Nothing about the match, but good ad for the Oasis Bar.) Leones 2 V 8 Leones B Another great night at bar Leones with the B team just sneaking it, wee Ron got beat by young Zak, (one to watch out for). Dave won with Mick going in off; Simon easily put Phil BG aside, Jeff missing an easy finish to let Andy and Sam (B team) to take that frame. After the break all downhill from there for the B´s, taking all five frames, young ZAK clearing up the final frame. Nauta A 5 V 5 Barracuda Hunters The 1st frame saw a real battle on the black; Ray finally gave Steve 2 shots to sink it. Then one each until in the 4th frame, Ray T put the Black over the bottom pocket and shortly after knocked in before time, giving the frame to Klaus to make it 2 All. Nauta

took both Doubles, frames 7 and 8 both went to Hunters. The 8th was a ladies match, Joules v Helen, Helens final shot on the black nothing short of magnificent. Cap´n Jack took the next frame off Cap´n Roger (sounds like the battle of the Jolly Roger). All to play for on the last frame then, Ray (Nauta) v Steve (Hunters) battling it out until Steve shot the black for the top pocket but missed, however it rolled all the way down the table, and just managed to drop in the bottom pocket, saving the day for Hunters, a well-deserved draw. Lupain 6 V 4 Chipeque Lupain won the first two, both tough games that could have gone either way. Chipeque fought back taking the next three. Mike & guest Brian levelled the score 3 - 3 in the 2nd double, Lupain then won the next three singles out of four to clinch another well earned victory. Fosters 5 V 5 Lowrys Great match, between two talented and sporting teams. Some tough games that could have gone either way. Even stevens all through the match, so a draw was the fair result, some excellent pool played by all! Bar 180 A 6 V 4

Summerland Allstars A good contest in San Blas where Bar180A raced into a 3-1 lead after the first set of singles with only Shaun from Summerlands getting on the Allstar scoresheet. After losing both doubles the home side stepped up the pace to put the game to bed winning the next three games, with Glyn (180) having a fantastic finish to beat the ever reliable Shaun to make it 6-3 . Jeff (Allstars) beat Martin in the final frame to make the scoreline look a closer 6-4. Summerland Elite 6 V 4 Bar 180B After losing the first game Summerland Elite took the next four frames and secured all three points with two games to go, Bar180C won the last two games to make the scoreline more respectable. Bar 180 C 7 V 3 Sloop Bar It looked a one sided match as Bar180C went 3-0 up, but the Sloop bar had other ideas and took the last singles game and both doubles to level the match at 3-3. Title challengers Bar180C were rocking but with good play and some fortune took all the remaining singles to record a good 7-3 win. Barracuda Bandits 6 V 4 Nauta B The Bandits must have worn a mask to get away with this one. It was pure robbery. Thanks to Nauta B for a lovely night but not for making the Bandits sweat like that. All started off Ok with Jim taking the first, then the wheels fell off with Steve losing out narrowly to his namesake Steve. Paul also lost to Paul giving Nautas a 2-1 lead. At the break Nauta Lead 4-2, but the Bandits fought back taking the last 4 singles, every game being hard fought and the Bandits very relieved to get away with this one! Red Pride 3 v Vivo 7 Blue div. bottom host the top. Red Pride Spike in a very jovial mood as he took the first frame from Vivos Valeri, and predicting a whitewash (tongue firmly in cheek!), however soon lamenting, as frame by frame fell to Vivo. Only in the last two did their fortunes change when Steve beat Val, and Spike winning again, surprisingly this time against Pedro. Full credit to the Red Lions team, holding up the Blue division in a great spirit. Next Tuesday sees the first round of the Cup competition, check league website, www.tenerifepoolleague.com or facebook “tenerife weekly pool super-league” for details.

Hamilton ready For new Journey

LEWIS Hamilton concedes it will be tough to compete this season, but feels it is not impossible for Mercedes to battle it out at the front of the grid.

The 2008 World Champion paid his first visit to the Mercedes factory in Germany on Monday, touring the Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart as well, and he wasted no time to vow to give his all to battle it out for victories. “I live to win. That’s what I work towards every year. So that’s what we’re going to work to this year,” he said. “Of course it’s going to be tough to compete, to beat the guys that are already at the front

like the Red Bulls and the Ferraris and McLarens but I don’t think it’s impossible.” Although Nico Rosberg won the Chinese GP in April, Mercedes had been trying 2012 campaign as they finished a distant fifth in the Constructors’ Championship behind Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren and Lotus. Hamilton admits he was in awe of the Mercedes staff after visiting the team’s factory in England late last year and is also confident he will “enjoy” his journey with his new colleagues. “I’ve been to Brackley back in the early part of December. Asking lots of questions, trying to get as much involved as I can in the limited time I

was there,” he said. “It was great to see how enthusiastic everyone was, looked like there was incredible determination to turn this thing around. So that gave me a lot of motivation for my winter.” He added: “I think this year’s going to be an interesting year, an interesting journey. Learning and getting to know new people and working with new people is always a massive challenge so that’s first and foremost one of the biggest challenges I have. “And after that it’s trying to succeed, trying to extract the most out of them and vice-versa. But I think it’s going to be a journey that we are going to enjoy.”

England flanker Tom Johnson out of Six Nations with knee injury

England flanker Tom Johnson has been ruled out of the entire Six Nations with a knee ligament injury, while fly-half Freddie Burns and prop Alex Corbisiero will miss the beginning of the tournament. Head coach Stuart Lancaster revealed the news at the tournament launch, with Exeter Chiefs back row Johnson expected to be on the sidelines for around three months.

Uncapped Worcester forward Matt Kvesic comes into the squad as cover for Johnson. London Irish loosehead prop Corbisiero has been ruled out of England’s opening two fixtures, against Scotland and Ireland, after undergoing surgery to clean out his knee. Burns will also miss at least the Calcutta Cup clash on 2 February, with the Gloucester fly-half expected to be out for two to three weeks with knee liga-

ment damage. England must wait to find out if Leicester centre Manu Tuilagi will have recovered from an ankle injury in time for the opening game of the Six Nations at Twickenham. Lancaster did confirm some positive injury news though, with full-back Alex Goode having overcome a shoulder problem that allows him to play for Saracens against Cardiff Blues in the LV= Cup this weekend.

Manchester United Goalkeeper David De Gea Regards Himself As First-Choice

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has insisted he regards himself as the No.1 for the Premier League leaders. The Spaniard could find himself back on the bench for Saturday’s FA Cup fourth round tie with Fulham as Sir Alex Ferguson continues to utilise the former Atletico Madrid man and fellow shot-stopper Anders Lindegaard. De Gea made a number of superb saves during Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham at White Hart Lane but was heavily criticised by Sky Sports expert Gary Neville for his weak punch which contributed to Clint Dempsey’s lastgasp leveller. The 22-year-old has made 22 appearances for the Red Devils this term and feels his form benefits when he is afforded more regular action with the side. “From the moment I signed I considered myself the first-choice keeper at the club but it’s down to the manager,” De Gea told the Daily Mirror. “He rotates us when he feels it’s good for the team. But obviously I’ve

played a few on the bounce now and that’s positive. “For a goalkeeper it’s always important

to have consistency and to be playing regularly. It’s good for confidence and morale.”

Hope Fading Fast For CD marino

LOSInG 0-4 at home to relegation rivals Getafe B was a crushing blow for CD Marino, the January transfer window has seen a flurry of new signings there were five home debuts, but even Messi and Van Persie might find it a tall order to turn their fortunes around.

The retirement of captain Maykel has left them without a natural leader; Rayco still plays with fire in his belly but elsewhere heads are dropping. Getafe were hopeful from the start and a long ball into the box missed an aerial dual in front of goal and fell to unmarked Lopez who had a simple tap in. Marino tried to respond, the latest new addition, midfielder Poncho floated in some probing long free kicks but striker Noah seems unable to make any impression these days. Acai got in close but the Getafe keeper was strong and took the ball off him, Sandro unleashed a clean strike but the keeper stooped to collect the ball. Another quick break from the visitors and Jorge Feliz rifled in a powerful goal from long range as his markers backed off. Poncho tried another of his speculative balls just before the break but Noah was way offside. Balduino came on for Acai at half time but fared little better up front. Sergei continued to get rich pickings down Marino’s right; he put in a tempting cross that Alberto cut out well. Then on the other flank Jaime made a clumsy foul and from the free kick Alberto had to tip over a curling shot. The third goal came 14 minutes after the restart, another long ball found Arturo he easily slipped his marker to walk the ball in the net. The fourth goal saw the

acai

Rayco

englisH rePelleD By soAring CB CAnAriAs They just keep getting better; CB Canarias racked up another home win on Tuesday night beating Estudiantes 84-79 in front of a whopping 4,293 crowd in La Laguna. This time the defence took a large share of the

honours as they kept the ACB league top scorer Carl English down to 20 points. Praise was heaped on defence players Jaime Heras, Nico Richotti, and Saul Blanco for restricting their free scoring opponent. It was another solid squad performance with quarter scores of 18-16, 20-20, 20-

20, and a final quarter of 26-23 including a decisive five points from Levi Rost in the final minute. Rost led the way with 22 points with Ricardo Uriz weighing in with 15. Next game is Sunday at Zaragoza as CB Canarias look to consolidate their 12th spot in Spain’s top league.

Marino defence pulled out of position leaving acres of space for another comfortable finish by Arturo as Rayco ran back to try to cover. The figures are frightening, since replacement coach Almeida arrived seven games ago Marino have only picked up two points and haven’t

managed a goal for 377 minutes. They are now five points adrift at the bottom and 14 points away from escaping the relegation slots. Next up it’s away to Coruxo on Sunday, at least they have Aaron Darias, Raul Barcos, and Pablo Barroso back from suspension.

Away Day Blues Continue For CD Tenerife

Another stumbling display on the road saw CD Tenerife grateful to bring back a point from Rayo Vallecano B in Madrid after a 0-0 draw. Top spot is still theirs but the lead has now been cut to two points and several players are scratching around for their best form.

Chechu is having a personal crisis, his passing has been wayward in recent weeks and he seems to be in headless chicken mode a lot of the time. Rayo have been plunging down the table but tested Tenerife early on with a wide free kick and a long shot straight at Sergio Aragoneses in goal. Aridane continues to frustrate up front, his 11 goals look a distant memory now, a poor header from a Chechu cross failed to warm the keeper’s hands. Suso thought he had opened the

scoring after nicking the ball off Owona and slipping it in the net but the ref blew for a dangerous tackle. Chechu let a shot go after 22 minutes and it caught the hand of Alcaniz to produce a penalty. The Tenerife midfielder took the spot kick with little conviction and home goalie Ismael dived the right way and prevented the goal. That seemed to play on Chechu and he struggled to do anything right, a low shot barely tickled the keeper and he couldn’t finish off some great interplay from Aridane and Jesus Alvaro who gets better by the week at left back. Suso tried to unlock the Rayo defence at the start of the second half, his effort was blocked by a stubborn defender. Jesus raced after a free kick but had to give second best to Ismael as he collected the ball. A change was needed, Loro came on to resume his recovery

from an injury lay off but he only lasted five minutes. Going up against Roberto for a loose ball down the touchline Loro raised his foot for a chest high lunge, bizarrely the Rayo player recoiled and clasped his face as if he had been head butted but it was still dangerous play and the ref brandished the red card for Loro. Luckily for Tenerife the numbers were evened up 15 minutes later when Alcaniz walked for a second yellow card after fouling livewire sub Guillem Marti. Despite his added zest and the introduction of Nico for Cristo Tenerife couldn’t find their cutting edge. Medina had the last word of the game sending a free kick high, wide and well clear of the home goal. This Sunday Ourense are the visitors to Santa Cruz at noon, a team they beat 3-2 at their place in those fondly remembered winning away days of early season.

Transfer News

Josmar (leaving) & German (loaned out)

Josmar Zambrano has been released by CD Tenerife after successive coaches failed to unlock his undoubted talent. The 20 year old joined the Santa Cruz club in 2008 after his family moved from Venezuela but has been a real enigma showing only flashes of his pace and trickery, last term he was loaned back to his home league and many thought he would nail

a first team place on his return in the summer. Recreativo de Huelva of the Second Division have snapped him up and are loaning him out to San Roque in group four of Tenerife’s division to nurture the player who became national Under 16 captain and two years ago made a five minute senior appearance against Argentina in a FIFA tournament.

Another prospect, 19 year old Ayoze Perez from San Andres is in demand despite being unable to break into the Tenerife first team. The forward had a prolific scoring record for the youth team and QPR asked about him in the summer, now Espanyol are sniffing around. Ayoze is currently banging in goals for Tenerife B and fans hope he will soon be doing the same at senior level. A central defender has been on the CD Tenerife shopping list and 26 year old Paco Borrego has agreed to join from San Fernando. CD Marino desperately need goals and Tyronne of Las Palmas could be their last desperate bid to stay up in Segunda B. Meanwhile the on off loan of centre back Ayoze Placeres from CD Tenerife to CD Marino should be concluded this weekend and there’s an extra midfield signing 26 year old Iker Izeta currently without a team and with a background of lower league teams. Both of the Segunda B local teams have missed out on the big rising star Leandro Merino of El Fraile club Ibarra. The speedy left winger has chosen Las Palmas in a tug of war that attracted late interest from Espanyol and Real Betis.
