Editorial

My absolute favourite story this week is the globetrotter from Liverpool who managed to enter every country in the world without flying, featured on page 28/29. Many of us have dreams of travelling the world; some even manage a little bit every year. But to spend years of your life travelling around and spending a little time in every single country in the world is extreme. Ok, so he gets a mention in the

Tenerife Weekly - 1st February - 7th February 2013 Guinness Book of Records, and he managed to raise money and awareness for Water Aid, but what will he do with himself now, everything else will be such an anti-climax. Although it has not been covered very much in the news, 75-year-old Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands is to abdicate in favour of her son, 45-year-old Willem Alexander, a step she says she has been thinking about for years. She is continuing a tradition; her mother abdicated aged 70 after

32 years on the throne, and her grandmother after only 50 years. Queen Elizabeth is now 86 and is celebrating her Coronation 60 years ago this year, she shows absolutely no sign of abdicating, nor should she, she considers it a role for life, her duty, only when she dies will Charles, or William if it comes to that, will take the throne. Which is as it should be. See you all next week.

Lifeguard Nicolas said: “We have been on strike since the 9th November. We attended a council meeting yesterday, (Wednesday) trying to get some answers; we disrupted the Ayuntamiento’s meeting and made a lot of noise, so they called the police. We were arrested, but they let us go, so we went back to the offices again. The council have told us that they have our money, but that they cannot release it”. Nicolas and his colleague, Marino, can stand on the pavement at Vistas Beach with posters and placards outlining their situation. Even though these lifeguards have been striking, they are still running a basic service in order that no-one gets into trouble on their

watch. Indeed Nicolas and Marino resuscitated a young Finnish girl they found on the beach, even though they are officially on strike. The basic service means that instead of the standard 12 lifeguards on duty, there are now only 6. Over the past 3 years the lifeguards have rescued 56 people, saved 6 lives, there have been no deaths on their stretch of beach. But they haven’t been paid for 6 months. The Vistas beach lifeguards have been credited for giving the best disabled service throughout Spain, the strike will do nothing to change this, the disabled are still being helped onto and off the beach by these lifesavers. Verónica Rodríguez is staging her hunger strike in a

tent on the beach where she works. She is a tiny lady, but she, and her dog wait to be paid. She says: “I’ve already lost everything and the bank is about to repossess my apartment and evict me anyway because my family are no longer able to help me keep up the mortgage payments. I cannot afford to lose any weight, but I have to fight. If I end up in hospital, then so be it.” The lifeguards’ situation has been called “unsustainable”, but their situation is not unique, tales of workers going months without pay are not uncommon here, recently there have been rubbish strikes in the south of Tenerife as the bin men protested the non-payment of their wages.

Missing In Tenerife

Ana Isabel González, aged 40, is from La Laguna and her family are desperately trying to find her as she has been missing since Monday afternoon. She was last seen in the plaza del Adelantado in La Laguna at 5.30pm when she dropped her daughter at her parents’ house. She is married with two children and her disappearance is said to be completely out of character. She is described as 1.70 inches tall, has brown hair and of a thin build. She has no history of mental illness. Anyone with information about her should contact their local police station.

news On tHe ROCK

The Canarian government and the Partido Popular agreed to hold joint working meetings all week to find ways of coping with the economic crisis. They will be studying the region’s economic and fiscal regime, that of the government, creating jobs, the relationship between the Canaries and the European Union between 2014 and 2020, and redesigning the economic model for the islands. The agreement is open to other political parties and business organizations. The crisis destroyed fourteen thousand three hundred jobs in the Canaries last year. The total number of jobless reached three hundred and sixty eight thousand four hundred. The year closed with a jobless rate up by 7.75% to 32.96%. Unemployment actually fell in the last quarter, by nine thousand eight hundred, which is 2.59%, the biggest fall in the country. However, The fourth quarter, the high season for tourism on the islands, saw over three thousand jobs created. Canarian president Paulino rivero has said that the capacity of the Canary Islands to maintain basic public services is approaching its limit, if the politics of cutting spending continue. He said that the State must guarantee that the Canaries can provide essential services, adding that the defence of these services is very high on the Canarian government’s agenda. The islands have lost eight hundred million euros of State finance a year, which means that we have three hundred and eighty four euros less per inhabitant than the State average. The Ministerio de Empleo is preparing a new strategy to combat youth unemployment involving a six-month period in which they can set up as autonomo with a social security contribution of just 50 Euros a month compared to the more than 250 Euros a month currently required. “Youth” is deemed to be anyone under 30 years of age. Once six months has passed, contributions will be discounted by around 30% for the following two years. According to the Cabildo vice president, Carlos Alonso, Tenerife’s economy has a high resistance level, and it is hoped that a rise in employment will be created in the third quarter, not only in tourism, but also in other sectors. Alonso said that the only sector which is creating jobs at the moment is tourism, with between five and seven thousand contracts being issued a month, although many of these are temporary or relief contracts. But other sectors, such as construction, commerce and government departments are continuing to cut jobs. repsol’s German partner, rWE, is looking for investors for oil prospecting in Canarian waters. In a promotional leaflet, the company says it estimates that the drillings in the waters between the Canaries and Morocco, could yield at least one thousand three hundred and ninety million barrels of oil. It explains that area concerned could be an extension of the same submarine plate where other discoveries have been made. The leaflet has been distributed by the Fuerteventura Cabildo, even though they are against the prospecting. The Canarian government’s vice president and councilor for education, universities and sustainability, José Miguel Pérez, travelled to Luxembourg on this week to meet the vice president of the European Investment Bank, Magdalena Álvarez, in an effort to seek support for the construction of fifteen new educational centers in the Canaries. By 2015, the regional government aims to complete the construction of schools which are a priority, funding them with public and private finance, a process which could create over two thousand jobs.

Cueva del viento

InSIDE the Cueva del Viento – Cave of Wind - another world is discovered. The fifth largest natural volcanic tunnel in the world, located in the area of Icod de los vinos, and is tour guide Alfredo Lainez’s pride and joy. The Cave was caused by lava flows from the Pico Viejo volcanic cone next to Mount Teide. A volcanic tunnel is a cavity formed inside lava flows. As lava flows while in contact with air, the surface melts and solidifies thereby creating a continuing insulating lava flow inside until a drain forms the volcanic tube. “You are now the ambassadors of the Cueva del Viento.,” is his introduction, his aim is to reveal the wonders that hide underground to the world and above all, protect and raise awareness. Inside the Cueva del Viento another world is discovered, it has no artificial lighting, no music, it is a journey that not only makes visitors feel its naturalness, but also manages to awaken their consciences. The caves head-guide Alfredo Lainez, manages to make anyone who walks into the cave fall in love with it after only two hours and, most importantly, he is ready to do everything in his power to protect and disseminate a unique

underground heritage. Alfredo Lainez makes sure that a visit to the caves just over 200 metres deep be special for the public. The other guides are no exception: they have learned from the best teacher, for whom the most important detail is that who delves beneath the neighbourhood in Icod, realize that there is something “special” and above all, “very fragile underground.” The surprise starts before they even enter the volcanic cave in the visitor center. There, the guides offer the first theoretical brushstrokes on volcanism and lava that formed the cavity. After a short tour by minibus which takes you to an anteroom: a short tour of the area, explaining the history and then, after donning helmets and lights, your caving experience begins and reveals a living museum that we must “take care of, nurture and

protect,” Lainez repeats over and over. Deep within the caves silence lets your imagination run wild. Láinez’ explains how the chambers were first formed 27,000 years ago, how they were created, with new eruptions over the remains of the last ones, and even deeper underneath, there is another great cave measuring 13 meters depth. Just one minute with the helmet lights off is enough to imagine what life is like for the 107 species of invertebrate fauna living in the volcano’s veins. The Cueva del Viento is the fifth longest in the world, the other four are in Hawaii, measuring almost 18 kilometres long and only three have been explored. The passages make their way to three levels, showing its magnificent phenomena. In 2008, thanks to the work of cavers like Alfredo Lainez, the Cabildo of Tenerife and the City of Icod, 250metres

of the cave were opened to the public. Since then 40,000 people have visited. Visitor Information Guided tours are conducted daily, Tuesday to Saturday at 10:00h, at 11:00, at 13:00 and 14:00 h. Check availability for guided tours in German and English The number of visitors is limited to 16 people per group, so it is recommended to visitors who book a place in advance by calling 922 815 339, via the web www.cuevadelviento.net or writing an email to info @ cuevadelviento.net . Or visit the Interpretation Centre with 30 minutes’ notice. Directions by car: North Take Highway TF-5 to Icod. Once in the town, take the TF-366, road to El Amparo as directed by the signal Visitor Centre - Wind Cave. Upon arriving at the restaurant El Refugio turn left and proceed a mile to get to the visitor centre.

Rose’s Story

THE dog in the pictures is rose, and here is her story. Last week one of our long term supporters Andrea Silver, of Studio 5 hair salon in Los Cristianos, was alerted to the fact that a dog had been tied up on the sea front promenade without water. She dashed to the scene and untied the poor creature, which was weak and dehydrated. Shockingly, a sign had been placed by her side which said, “I’m alone on the street, can you help me or take me with you please”. Andrea immediately took her to the salon where she drank plenty of water, then called us, and Siobhan who runs our San Eugenio shop drove to Los Cristianos with Alice Shaw from Poochies Pet Hotel within the hour. Poor rose was taken straight to the vets and diagnosed as having a severe mouth infection. She is now staying with Siobhan while she has her treatment, strong antibiotics followed by some work on her teeth and gums when she is stronger. She is around

8 years old. Eventually, when she is much better she will need a home to live out her days in happiness. She has an unregistered micro chip so it seems unlikely we will find her original owners, but if anyone recognises her please get in touch with us. It is thought that one of the people who build the sand sculptures left her with the sign by her side, maybe she was taken in by him at some point then abandoned due to her illness, we just don’t know. It is also upsetting that potentially hundreds of people walked past her and did nothing. However, the important thing now is that she is safe and receiving

treatment. Andrea has been making a collection to cover her medical costs, and we will keep you updated on her progress. Would you like to have a say in how we do things at Live Arico? There is still time to become a member for 2013. Come to our AGM and be involved in the decision making process. Subscription is 20 Euros per year payable before the end of February, along with a letter or email expressing an intention to be an active member. You can also subscribe at various levels via our web page. Mail sue@livearico.org for more information.

Tenerife’s Hidden Gems

By Marc Craig

Cruz del Carmen’s “Enchanted Forest”.

Last week doing research for my article on nature’s island invaders, I was intrigued by what I learned of the “tropical forest in

7

the clouds”, in the north of the island at Cruz del Carmen. It piqued my interest so much that last Friday, my wife and I set

our alarm for 7.30am and with a tank full of gas and our destination entered on Google map, we set off to investigate!!

My Destination Tenerife is part of My Destination, a global travel resource run by a community of hundreds of local experts. Straight up the TF1, then onto the TF2 toward La Laguna, past “ Al Campo” to join TF5, off at TF13 and finally TF12 to our target, it was about an hour’s leisurely drive. It was a typical sunny Tenerife day for most of the journey but as we neared the forest we noticed the clouds draping over the distant peaks like a shroud of dry ice. The final few kilometres as the roads narrowed and got steeper, we drove into the clouds and suddenly we were in a fairy tale world, everything glistened due to the condensing cloud cover which looked like an eerie mist. The world had turned every shade of green as the canopies of the moss covered trees lining the road, entwined above our heads, from a sunny day to a misty twilight world in minutes. We stopped and left the car in the ample parking area, (there’s an information centre, restaurant, ranger’s office and a viewing point-not much to see when we were there due to cloud but the view must be incredible). The first thing we noticed was the cold, take a jumper and a jacket!! Everything was dripping wet as we made our way to the start of the hiking trails. There are 3 different types of trail, all entitled the “path of the senses” , number one is a wooden path that’s suitable for everyone

including wheelchairs, each trail has “sensory points” along the way, instructing you to close your eyes, feel textures, smell etc., great fun no matter how old you are!! The trails really have to be seen to be believed, they really do look like an enchanted forest movie set-we half expected to glimpse a wood nymph running for cover or a rabbit in a waistcoat looking at his pocket watch and saying “I’m late! I’m late!” The plant life was stunning, the forests are identical to the ones that existed in the Tertiary period, unfortunately all the animal life must’ve been sleeping as although we were informed by multiple information boards that the forest was teeming with life, we saw none!! As well as the easy trail, there are 2 more that require an amount of exertion and hiking shoes, which take an average of 45 or 90 minutes respectively and after descending by foot about 200 feet, there’s a viewpoint looking over the Anaga mountains which words can’t describe, but what goes down must come up and the climb back will soon make you forget the cold!! I’m so glad that we went to this beautiful part of the island, I just can’t believe it took me so long to discover it!

Loro Parque are celebrating the fact that their two female Galapagos turtles (Geochelone nigra) have laid eggs for the first time. This indicates that both females have reached sexual maturity and are ready to reproduce. This is an important achievement from an environmental point of view, because they are a long living species, vulnerable with slow reproduction, in zoos as well

as in the wild, so the first egg laying, although not fertile, indicates they may reproduce soon.

The Galapagos turtles are the largest of their type on the planet and can achieve a weight of up to 250 kilos. Originally they were found on every continent, except Australia and Antarctica, but now they are extinct on the mainland, and only live on the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador, where there are different populations in various locations. The two females at Loro Parque are over 20 years

Horse Rescue

Police Officers searching a farm in Chajaña, Arico, came across a small building attached to the house, measuring only three square meters, with only a small hole in one side and a window. The agents were able to see through the gap in the wall and saw that inside were three adult horses inside, in deplorable conditions.

old and live together with 50-year-old Tom, with whom they share an open exhibition area, specially created for them, where each animal has its own cave. Usually, turtles spawn their eggs on the ground and plug up the holes for incubation, so the keepers and veterinarian team are monitoring the animals with frequent ultrasounds, in order to observe this reproductive stage. The Galapagos turtles is a threatened species and listed as rare as a result of hunting, the destruction of their hábitat and the introduction of animals that compete for food.

FITUR Trade Fair

The Canary Islands government will invest a total of 680,000 Euros in this year’s International tourism fair, FITUR, which started in Madrid last Wednesday until February 3rd 2013. This amount represents a 13%, 100,000 Euros, cut in last year’s event. FITUR attracts Spanish communities form everywhere and they will participate in what is labelled as one of the most important tourism fairs in Europe. However, like the

Canary Islands, most of the participants are expected to cut their expenditure compared to last year. At a cost of 680,000 Euros the Canary Islands will rank second place in advertising spending, according to official data provided by the regional governments. The Canaries stand, which covers 1,827 square meters, will be inspired by the sea and its aim is to boost domestic tourism. The highest spender at this year’s event will again be Andalucía, which has a budget of 1.06 million Euros.

Letters from Readers

The horses had so little space, they could not move, causing them to be extremely anxious, nervous and aggressive, they were biting and pushing each other to try to gain space. Each of the horses was extremely thin, their ribs clearly defined, as were their hip bones. Troughs inside the room empty of food

or water. The animals were obviously not being cared for so the owner was arrested by officers. The owner admitted that he did not have the necessary documents for the animals, nor had they received any of the required vaccination. He has been remanded to appear in court.

How I agree with the letter from MR D PATRICK in the 25th JAN issue of Tenerife Weekly highlighting the unhygienic usage of the beach at Paloma Beach & Costamar area, but a similar situation exists at the main Bus Station in Los Cristianos, the only toilet block there is for the use of the drivers so anyone getting on or off of a bus and finding themselves “cut short” simply uses the back of the buildings or the nearest bush or tree to relieve themselves, the smell of urine in the gardens between the bus stops and San Marino is quite over powering at times, not a very good advert for visitors to Los Cristianos.

FEBRUARy HIGHLIGHTS

FEBrUAry in Tenerife is unpredictable as we are in the midst of winter. However, unlike the hymn ‘In the bleak midwinter, frosty winds may moan’

we may get the odd blustery day, almost certainly spectacular high seas and a little rain. oh yes bound to be rain on a couple of days, as it is also Carnival, but

don’t let the weather put a dampener on anyone’s visit to the island. For most, it will still be shorts and T-shirt weather during the day and while tempera-

tures hover around the low 20’s it feels hotter in the sun, although I would suggest something more than short sleeves or strappy tops for a night out.

Ignoring the weather, February is usually busy as Santa Cruz hosts one of the most important carnivals in the world. It is not only locals that flock in their thousands; holidaymakers from all across Europe are swept up in the atmosphere of fun and abandon. Watch or even take part in the parades where the spectacular costumes will amaze everyone. Let yourself be carried away by the music of this jubilant explosion of vitality that will leave you with indelible memories. If you feel that mixing with 100,000 people is too much you can always go to smaller fiestas in Puerto de la Cruz, Los Cristianos or even Los Gigantes where there is still plenty of high spirits and good humour to delight both young and old. The main Carnival dates are between 6th and 17th but the highlights should you wish to see them are on the following dates In Santa Cruz Theme Bollywood. 6th Gala for the Election of the Carnival Queen 8th Opening Parade - From the Plaza of the Dominican Republic to Avenida Francisco La Roche then performances from major bands, DJs and fireworks display in Plaza Candelaria.

12th Coso – Main Parade (4 pm) 13th Funeral of the Sardine 17th End of Carnival In Puerto de la Cruz 13th Burial of the Sardine 15th High Heels’ Drag Marathon 16th Closing Parade 2nd – 14th Los Realejos Carnival Programme. Los Gigantes – 21st – 25th February – Theme Cinema Los Cristianos - 2nd – 11th March – Theme Homage to Brazil. Highlights 2nd Carnival Opening Parade 9th Drag Queen Gala 10th Great Carnival Parade 11th Burial of Sardine. Other Celebrations in February are:Canarias Folk Fest - An encounter with the most deeply rooted traditions in the town. The festival will also feature a wide range of taste and buy Canarian products. Weekly Schedule to end March 2013 Every Thursday at 20:30 folk groups perform on the seafront in Los Cristianos (by the sculpture of the fisher-woman). Every Friday at 20:30 the group perform in Playa de Las Americas (City Centre Square). http://redqueenmusings. wordpress.com

Mainland News In Brief Following recent reports of sports cars being tested at the Castellón airport, the airport promoter, Aerocas, has said that it has charged the Mercedes HWA AMG team three thousand euros for undertaking aerodynamic tests at the airport, which have been authorized by the company’s president, Carlos Fabra. The company emphasized that no competitions were included. The Mercedes team is preparing to compete in the German DTM saloon car championship, which in terms of importance, is second to the Formula One in Germany. The residents’ group, the People Against Oil Prospecting on Costa del Sol, called a demonstration last Saturday, on the seafront in Fuengirola. This was intended to be a massive protest, with residents’ associations, political parties, unions, and ecological organisations, which consider that oil prospecting, will only bring misery and irreversible damage to nature and wildlife. The government is to prolong the Plan Pive, the incentive scheme to encourage the purchase of new energy efficient vehicles. With this plan, you can trade in a car over ten years old, or a commercial vehicle over seven years old, and get a discount on your new vehicle. British Ambassador Giles Paxman has met councillors for European Residents in Alicante to discuss further ways to encourage British nationals to integrate into their local communities. During the event, organised by the British Consulate in Alicante, councillors examined ideas for encouraging British nationals to register on the Padrón, case studies to highlight the roles of the Consulate and local town halls, and ways to share ideas and experiences in the future. Teulada, Torrevieja and Calpe town halls presented several new initiatives. In Malaga, a court hearing of the money laundering case in which the former Marbella mayor Julian Muñoz, and his two ex partners, singer Isabel Pantoja and Maite Zaldívar are accused, is now in its final stages. In the final sessions, their defence lawyers are presenting their final reports. Last week, the anti-corruption prosecution and the Marbella council presented theirs. Now it remains for the defence for the others accused to present their reports, then all those accused can exercise their right to have the last word before judgment. Around thirty people from the Mar y Villa development in Calpe were evacuated from their homes in a preventive measure in the early hours of Monday morning, when a forest fire broke out, close to four houses. Teams of firemen attended the scene, and at daybreak, they were joined by two helicopters. It is thought that the fire could have been started by sparks, after an electricity pylon fell in strong winds during the night. Half of the people evacuated were accommodated in a nearby hotel until the fire services completed their work. The credit crunch has boosted the illegal trade of cigarettes, which has reached sky-high levels with growth of 526% in 2011. Illicit trade was directly responsible for cigarettes’ total decline in volume terms during the year. 16% of Spanish smokers have admitted to buying cigarettes illegally, a figure that reaches 28% in southern Spain. However, growth in illicit trade, which was very significant in 2011, is set to decline thanks to restrictive new police and government measures. Malaga’s tourism department has begun an indefinite campaign to promote the city and the Costa del Sol at the airport, where they have installed ten large banners and thirty one murals with photos, aimed at capturing the attention of the tourists from the moment they arrive, and when they leave, to encourage them to return. This initiative, which has cost a hundred thousand euros including the rental of the spaces, shows tourists everything they can find on the Costa del Sol, which invite them to get to know the area.

Lancashire Cricket Club To Train In Spain

Spain, not known for its cricket history, is to play host to Lancashire cricketers as the hope the pre-season training in a small Andalusian city will prepare them for the 2013 season. For the next two weeks, the Red Rose players will trade freezing temperatures in Manchester for warm weather training as preparations for the new domestic season get underway. Two groups of six players will be spending a week each at the Desert Springs resort in Almanzora, with club physiotherapist Sam Byrne putting them through their paces. “The players are all desperate to bounce back out of Division Two and build on some impressive one day performances last year,” he said on the official Lancashire website. “They have been working hard on their skills with Peter Moores and the coaches since late November and putting in the hard yards with Phil Scott, our

new Strength and Conditioning Coach in the gym. “Being able to get outside at Desert Springs, with the facilities and weather they have, will really give us the chance to increase the amount and intensity of physical training we’re doing. “The bowlers will be able to start to run through on grass and we’ll get plenty of high intensity fielding and throwing done in realistic conditions.”

It is hoped the warm weather training, which includes strength, running, speed and agility work - will add a different dimension to the team’s performance. The sessions were arranged through Lancashire’s official medical services partner, David Roberts Physiotherapy, which has a partnership with the Desert Springs resort. Tania Hitchens, owner of Desert Springs, said: “We’ve

Spain Next For Alec Baldwin?

The end of “30 Rock” signals all change for both Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin, but it seems they already have plans for what to do next.

Fey told CNN after the SAG Awards ceremony on Sunday, where she picked up best female actor in a comedy, that she does have a deal in place with NBC to develop more shows. First and foremost, though, she’ll be doing more movie work; “The Muppets” sequel begins filming in London in March. As for Baldwin, who won the award for best male actor in a comedy, his future could include some time in Spain, if his wife Hilaria gets her way. “My wife wants to move to Spain, she wants to spend more time in Spain, enjoy life a little more,” he said. “My problem is I’m afraid I’m going to take my

wife to Spain and she’s not going to want to come back.” And Baldwin would have good reason to return - he hinted that he, too, has a few ideas in the works. “I think everybody’s sorry ‘30

Rock’ is over because they had such a good experience,” the actor said. “But we have some ideas of some other things we’re going to do in the future. Everything has to end.”

been supporters of English cricket for a long time. When Dave Roberts approached us with the idea of jointly sponsoring the team to come out to Desert Springs, we jumped at the chance to host them. We’ve hosted numerous football and cricket teams as well as school groups, and we think the facilities, food and weather make it the perfect one-stop-shop for teams to come and train.”

Fake Kidnap An unnamed 11-year-old Spanish schoolboy has landed himself in hot water after faking his own kidnapping in an effort to avoid parent’s evening at his school. A huge search operation was launched after he telephoned his father saying he had been abducted. Police set up roadblocks across north-west Spain and alerted authorities in neighbouring Portugal after the youngster claimed to be locked in the boot of a blue Seat. The local media even ran stories on their websites about the dramatic kidnapping. The search ended after the boy’s father, a police office in Xinzo de Limia, noticed keys to a flat the family owned were missing. The boy explained he had been terrified of his parents speaking to his teachers after a string of bad grades. “The civil guard attributed the false alarm to a childish ‘prank’ that had something to do with the boy’s situation at school,” local media reported.

La Manga Club Resort

BEST GOLF RESORT IN SPAIN

THE five-star La Manga Club resort is celebrating after being named as the

best golf resort in Spain by UK golfers for the second year running. The luxury

venue was the unanimous choice of the readers of Today’s Golfer magazine to

win the top travel award, comfortably beating off the competition of its

rivals. The Club received an impressive 45% of the vote, to claim the leading honour and cement its status as one of the top golf destinations in Europe.

Boasting outstanding facilities including three 18-hole championship golf courses, the resort has a rich golfing history since its start in 1972, while its array of other outstanding sports and leisure amenities, bars and restaurants has helped establish it as a firm favourite with visiting golfers. It has regularly hosted high-profile professional and amateur tournaments over the last four decades and that will again be the case in 2013. Europe’s top amateur golfers will descend on the venue at the end of February to take part in the 2013 Copa S.M El Rey - the Spanish International Amateur Championship - on its renowned South Course from February 27 to March 3. In addition, La Manga Club will stage the Ecco Tour’s Nordic League Winter Series for a fourth time from March 12-22, and as well as hosting the Swedish PGA and the 17th edition of the popular Addison Lee Footballers’

Classic later this spring. La Manga Club’s director of golf Gary Silcock, said: “It’s a great honour to be voted as the best resort in Spain for the second year running. To win such a significant award in successive years is a major achievement and is recognition for the high regard that La Manga Club continues to be held in by golfers across the UK.” La Manga Club has previously played host for both the Spanish Open and Ladies European Tour Qualifying School, staging the former event five years in a row. In addition, South African legend Gary Player was La Manga Club’s first director of golf, European Tour legend Severiano Ballesteros was the complex’s tour professional between 1980 and 1985, and ex-world number one Luke Donald cut his golfing teeth there during his school holidays. The latest recognition comes hot on the heels of the five-star complex being named the best conference hotel in Spain at The Annual MICE Report Awards 2012 last month and signing a deal with the Lawn Tennis Association to be the British tennis governing body’s overseas training base until June 2016.

www.tenerife-weekly.com The Spanish newspaper El Pais has issued an apology for publishing a fake photo of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez undergoing surgery. Spain’s most influential paper apologised for splashing a “false photo” of Venezuela’s cancer-stricken leader Hugo Chavez on its front page, prompting a furious response from the government in Caracas, which vowed to take legal action. Within minutes of posting the image online as a global exclusive, El Pais said it had discovered from social media that the photo was not of Chavez. It removed it from its website and withdrew its print edition. Venezuela’s government said the publication of the photo, which showed the head of a man lying down with a breathing tube in his mouth, was “grotesque,” while Argentinian President Cristina Fernandez, a close ally of Chavez, called it vile. “El Pais apologises to its readers for the damage caused. The newspaper has opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of what happened and the errors that were committed in the verification of the photo,” the paper said. Chavez, 58, is in Cuba after undergoing his fourth cancer operation in just 18 months. He has not spoken or appeared in public for six weeks, fuelling speculation about how serious his condition is. El Pais, one of the world’s biggest Spanish-language publications and an institution both in Spain and in Latin America, said it received the grainy image from the agency Gtres Online, which it said represents 60 other agencies in Spain. In a statement, El Pais said the newspaper was told it had been taken seven days earlier by a Cuban nurse who was part of Chavez’s medical team, and was then sent to the nurse’s sister, who lives in Spain. “The agency has acknowledged it was deceived by those who provided the material and will take legal action,” El Pais said. The photo was on the newspaper’s website for half an hour and also appeared in early editions of the print version that were then pulled from newsstands and replaced with a new edition with a different front page.

El Pais Apology

In Venezuela, anxious Chavez supporters and opponents alike are waiting for any new picture, video or audio message from the socialist leader, who is famed for filling the airwaves with long-winded speeches, jokes and withering jabs at his foes. Officials say his condition is improving after he suffered multiple complications, including unexpected bleeding and a severe respiratory problem following the Dec. 11 surgery. However, in contrast to

economy battered by declining competitiveness, in a bill presented last Friday by the central government.

Companies in Spain operate under distinct laws and regulations in each region, often repeating lengthy and expensive applications for business licences. Under the new rules, which must be passed by Parliament, one license will be valid nationwide. “This is a very important law aimed at increasing competitiveness and, as such, creating jobs. Eliminating internal market barriers is a matter of urgency,” Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said.

Chavez’s previous visits to Havana, officials have not published any evidence of his condition. In 2011, with great fanfare, they broadcast video footage of him reading a newspaper, walking in a garden, and chatting with his friend and mentor, Cuba’s ex-leader Fidel Castro. The president has never revealed what type of cancer he has, only that the initial tumour found in mid2011 was in his pelvic area and was the size of a baseball. Venezuelan opposition leaders

have long accused the government of secrecy over his illness, while supporters accuse “bourgeois” local and foreign media of being in league with the opposition to spread rumours he is at death’s door. The government says it has never been more transparent. It described El Pais’s publication of the picture a screengrab from an unrelated 2008 video - as part of efforts by far-right political forces to attack Chavez’s self-styled revolution. It said it would take appropriate

legal action, and that the newspaper’s apology to its readers was not enough.“Neither their disgusting photos nor their systematic campaigns will stop the president’s advance,” Information Minister Ernesto Villegas told a news conference in Caracas. “Would El Pais publish a similar photo of a European leader? Of its director? Sensationalism is valid if the victim is a revolutionary ‘sudaca’,” he added, using a pejorative term that is sometimes used in Spain to refer to Latin Americans.

The brand spanking new Mercedes CLA four-door is a car that’s as fresh as they come. It was only launched a couple of weeks ago and is already rolling off the production line. In fact, the rollout was so quick that models are popping up all over Europe. This is the very first time a CLA was spotted completely undisguised in Spain. It and a number of other Mercedes models have been testing there, but this is a promotional car not a prototype. It has been fitted with the optional AMG Line cosmetic package. This gives it a different bumper with larger intakes, a star fall grille, ventilated disk brakes, sports suspension and a host of cosmetic mods inside. In Germany, this would cost you an extra 2,261 Euros, pushing the price way over 40,000 Euros for the top model. According to experts, it is worth the price being quoted as by far the most interesting car on the street. However the performance has been reported as disappointing even though it has a P211 PS 2-liter turbo engine.

Felipe To Head Spanish Olympic Bid PrInCE Felipe de Borbón has been appointed Honorary President of the Madrid 2020 olympics and Paralympics. The Crown Prince was presented with Madrid’s Candidature file during an audience at Palacio de la Zarzuela with the city’s Mayor Ana Botella and Alejandro Blanco, the President of the bid and the Spanish olympic Committee.

Prince Felipe actually competed at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, and carried Spain’s flag at the Opening Ceremony. “This is wonderful news for the Madrid 2020 Bid and is a further indication of the Royal family’s total commitment to Spanish sport,” said Blanco. “HRH Prince Felipe was Spain’s flag bearer at Barcelona in 1992 and he will carry the flag again for the Madrid 2020 bid, which

is not just for the city of Madrid but for the whole of Spain.” Prince Felipe’s acceptance of the Honorary Presidency continues the Spanish Royal family’s longstanding involvement in the Olympic Movement, with various members of them having competed in recent Games, as well as attending them. His mother, Queen Sofia, was a reserve for Greece’s sailing team in the dragon class, in which Prince Felipe’s uncle; Prince Constantine won a gold medal. The Royal family’s support also extends to the Paralympic Movement. Her Royal Highness Infanta Elena is the Honorary President of the Spanish Paralympic Committee and heads Spain’s Paralympic Games delegation. Juan Antonio Samarch junior is hoping that Prince Felipe can provide a boost to Madrid’s bid against rivals Istanbul and Madrid. “We are counting on His Royal Highness and his leadership to help us complete the last

stage in our race towards our Olympic dream,” he said. Jose Perurena, President of the International Canoe Federation, who is an International Olympic Committee member, believes that the presence of Prince Fe-

lipe can make a real difference to the Spanish capital’s chances. “He is very involved in the project and excited about it. Thanks to the work everyone is putting in together, we are convinced we have a winning bid.”

Cancer Missed In Uk, Diagnosed In Spain

E

LAInE Wheeler, 63, originally from London, has lived in Torremolinos since 1999. She had been going back to the UK every year to see family and get an annual health check. She visited her UK doctor in 2005 complaining of a lump in her breast and was told there was nothing wrong with her despite not having had a mammogram. According to Mrs Wheeler, her doctor instead told her to go home and ‘get on with your life’.

After being given the all clear she forgot about it until 2007 when she went to a chemist in Coin to get painkillers for a headache. Due to her very high blood pressure the pharmacist recommended she went to Coin Hospital for a thorough check up, it was there she showed a Spanish doctor the lump in her breast, which had now grown to

three and a half inches long. She said: “The doctor was taken aback by what she saw and I was immediately rushed to Malaga Hospital for further tests. I had a number of biopsies which confirmed by worst nightmares, I had breast cancer. My whole world fell apart.” Mrs Wheeler had an operation to remove two tumours from her right breast and had 16 sessions of radiotherapy. She is now in remission and hopes to get the all clear in April. She said: “I am lucky to be alive. Thank god I was finally diagnosed. The doctors in Spain were fantastic and very thorough, they have been phenomenal and I can never thank them enough. They were so astute in realising there was something seriously wrong and my doctor in the UK didn’t even check my blood pressure.” She added: “I spent all those years thinking it was just a cyst because I had been told there was nothing wrong with me, you should be able to trust your doctor but I could have died.”

Catholic Church In Tax Row

The Catholic Church is Spain’s largest and richest landowner, though its non-profit status means it is exempt from paying most taxes. But that may be about to change. Alcala de Henares is re-evaluating the status of hundreds of church holdings that have been exempt from paying property tax for hun-

dreds of years and is endeavouring to serve the church an up-to-date property tax bill.

Off a cobblestone street in Alcala de Henares, an ancient Roman town about 20 miles from Madrid, there’s a 400-year-old convent, El Convento de Clarisas de San Diego. In addition to prayer and charity, the nuns run a side business selling candied almonds from a tiny window in their convent. Their vows demand that they not be

seen in public. So they sell their wares through a rotating wooden screen. While the nuns’ profits from their almond enterprise are probably non-existent, that is beside the point, say some local lawmakers. The nuns are using at least part of this convent for commercial purposes. And for that, they must pay. “We’re studying whether any church properties that have long been listed as charities are actually being used for commercial activities. If that’s the case, they’ll

have to start paying tax,” said city councilman Anselmo Avendano. Last summer, Avendano passed a motion to reevaluate church holdings by square footage. So, if one out of 30 rooms in a convent is selling sweets, it’ll have to pay tax on that one room. That’s how the system is supposed to work already, but it’s not always enforced. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy told reporters last year, “I insist, we will not denounce an international agreement. ... It would be irresponsible,” He

said any efforts to press the church for more tax would violate a 1979 treaty with the Vatican. On one side of this disagreement are cashstrapped municipalities and on the other, centuries of tradition. Avendano says he’s a Catholic himself. “We’re not questioning the church’s good works — charity for the elderly or poor or ill. We’re not criticizing that at all. What we want is to re-examine property the church uses to make a profit,” Avendano saild. “For example, rental apartments, parking lots and garages that it owns. Those are businesses.” The Catholic Church owns about half of this city. Sometimes people die and leave their house or business to the church, which then becomes the landlord. “Some of the Catholic schools have swimming pools, and they charge a fee to residents to swim there on weekends. So the school should be paying tax on that activity. But they haven’t been,” said another city councilman, Ricardo Rubio. One street in Alcala called Calle Tercio, or One-Third Street, dates to the Middle Ages when vendors were required to give one-third of their profits to the Catholic Church. Nowadays, there’s a different tax man in town who happens to be broke.

15

The city of Alcala de Henares is $400 million in debt. If the Catholic Church had to pay tax on all its property in Spain, it could owe up to $4 billion a year. “These days, towns are cutting their budgets for health care, education, infrastructure and welfare. But the Catholic Church hasn’t had to make a single cut because it gets money from the state,” said Juanjo Pico, a spokesman for Europa Laica, a Spanish group that lobbies for the separation of church and state. When Spaniards file their tax returns, they can check a box to donate money to the church — and the state deducts it automatically. That, and the church’s tax breaks, are coming under scrutiny. But church officials question why this seems to be only about them. “Why isn’t this debate about all non-profit groups?” asked Fernando Gimenez Barriocanal, the financial director at Spain’s Council of Bishops. He says the church has the same tax deal as the Red Cross and other private, non-profit groups. He also hints at what could happen if the Catholic Church were to have to pay more. “Obviously, we’d have to direct more of our money to pay those taxes. The church would still want to help those in need, but we’d have less money to do that,” he said.

The Fight Against Terrorism

A security meeting gathered last week in Rabat included the interior ministers of France, Morocco, Portugal, and Spain who agreed to enhance cooperation between the four countries’ police and security departments to improve the fight against terrorism, illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

The four countries also agreed to upgrade their intelligence exchange cooperation in matters of financial assets monitoring in a bid to reduce money laundering and cut off terrorist groups’ access to funds. This multilateral cooperation, that already existed at bilateral levels between the four countries, will enable these nations to join efforts to take up the security challenges facing up the region, especially with the increase of terrorist groups and the transfer of weapons out of Libya that fell into the hands of terrorists and anti-government forces in West Africa and the Sahel. Although Security Council Resolutions and reports by security affairs pundits had warned, after the Libyan Revolution, about the risk of destabilisation posed by the dissemination in the Sahel region of illicit small arms and light weapons, the warnings went almost unnoticed until the Mali crisis.

The Rabat meeting took place two weeks after France intervened in Mali to stop the advance of terrorist groups, so devoted a large part of its debates to the crisis and the assessment of the security situation and challenges in the region. The document adopted by the Rabat meeting is seen as an attempt to give a coordinated and efficient response to the threats endangering stability and security in the region. It

outlines that the four countries’ interior ministers are all equally aware of “the extreme seriousness” of the terrorist threat from the Sahel and of the need for sustained coordination and intense exchanges between the four nations in order to prevent and combat effectively terrorism. The officials have also voiced determination to consolidate their cooperation in matters of police training and to enhance exchanges of

information and expertise between their respective departments and security services. “Exchange of operational information between the four countries in the fight against terrorism is a shared priority”, the document underlined, adding that the four countries will improve in this regard the functioning of their cooperation mechanisms. The meeting is intended to lay

the groundwork for broader cooperation in order to deal with various threats to stability and security in the region. In this regard, the interior ministers urged their respective security services to provide technical assistance to Sahel countries in the frame of joint actions whenever possible. The four ministers agreed to meet on an annual basis, with their antiterrorism departments.

Spanish Doping Trial Begins

Hot on the heels of Lance Armstrong’s confession, Spain’s Operation Puerto finally went to trial Monday after a delay of seven years, promising the prospects of even more revelations about doping in cycling.

Thirty-five witnesses are expected to testify in a trial due to last until March 22. Although no riders will sit in the dock, many will be called to testify as witnesses, including two-time Tour de France champion Alberto Contador. He was stripped of a third Tour title after testing positive for clenbuterol. The trial is limited to doping in cycling, even though athletes in other sports were also reportedly implicated in the discovery of blood bags and other doping equipment in 2006. The World Anti-Doping Agency wants all evidence to be released. Several hundred blood and plasma bags were seized by police, but the Puerto case has implicated over 50 cyclists, including Contador, Ivan Basso, Jan Ullrich and Alejandro Valverde. Five defendants are to be cross-examined in connection with a sophisticated blood doping network uncovered by police seven years ago. Judge Julia Santamaria can rule only on matters covered by Spanish law as it applied in May 2006, when police raids uncovered a mass of blood doping evidence in labs, offices and apartments. The case will focus on whether public health was endangered at any point. Alleged ringleader Dr. Eufemiano Fuentes accused of masterminding a vast doping network that snared dozens of cyclists, allegedly stored bags containing high concentrations of hemoglobin-rich red cells taken from the rid-

ers’ own blood so it could be re-injected during competition when they needed a performance boost. Manzano is a retired cyclist who turned whistle-blower after suffering medical problems he said were caused by the doping practices while riding for team Kelme. “Manzano had to stop being a professional cyclist as a result of these practices,” His lawyer Carlos Sanchez said adding that the trial must determine whether the blood extractions, transfusions, storage and transport and the labelling of human plasma and blood could have represented a health risk. “First there is the question of storage,” Sanchez said. “Blood must be preserved only in specialized centres. What you can’t have is blood being stored at home in the fridge.” Also on trial are Fuentes’ sister and fellow doctor, Yolanda; Manolo Saiz, a former ONCE and Liberty Seguros team sports director; and Vicente Belda and Ignacio Labarta, both associated with the former Kelme team. Jose Luis Merino, another doctor, also was due to be tried, but Santamaria granted him a temporary stay last week after he presented medical reports stating he is suffering from Alzheimer’s. The five are charged with endangering public health rather than incitement to doping, which was not a crime at the time of the arrests. A Spanish anti-doping law was passed only in November 2006.The distinction between the two charges is pivotal. The prosecutor is seeking a two-year prison sentence plus a two-year professional ban for the accused. He will have to show that the blood transfusions put the riders’ health at risk.

Malala Gets Replacement Skull

There was international outrage after the Taliban shot young Malala Yousufzai, 15, at point blank range in the north western Swat district, simply because she was campaigning for girls’ education. The bullet hit her left brow and instead of penetrating her skull it travelled under the skin, the whole length of her head and into her shoulder. The shock wave shattered the thinnest bone of the skull and the soft tissue at the base of her jaw and neck were damaged. Her left eardrum was destroyed.

Following the attack last October she was flown for specialist treatment at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital. British doctors have now revealed the remarkable medical procedures which will transform her life. Within the next 10 days she will undergo two operations which will replace a missing area of skull and implant a complex electronic hearing device. Surgeons at Birmingham say a 0.66mm titanium metal plate will be screwed into place, having been moulded from a 3D model created through the CT image of Malala’s skull. In a separate procedure a cochlear implant will be fitted, capable of providing a sense of sound to someone who is profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing. A small area will be drilled in the skull behind the titanium plate to allow the electronics to be implanted. Malala was released as an outpatient in early January to continue her recuperation at the family’s temporary home in the Midlands with her father

Ziauddin, mother Toorpekai and younger brothers Khushal and Atul. Shortly after Malala arrived in Birmingham her father released a statement saying: “I am awfully thankful for all the peace-loving well-wishers who strongly condemn the assassination attempt on Malala, who pray for her health and support the grand cause of peace, education, freedom of thought and freedom of expression.” The Pakistan government has since given Malala’s father a job in the UK. He has been appointed the education attaché at the Pakistan Consulate. Since the attack, a campaign has gathered pace for Malala to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize after she became a symbol of the struggle for women’s rights in Pakistan.

Soldiers Double Arm Transplant

BrEnDAn Marrocco, who lost both arms and both legs in a roadside bomb attack in Iraq in 2009, says he has “hope for the future” after becoming the first serviceman to undergo a double arm transplant. Six weeks ago the 26-year-old underwent a complex 13-hour operation during which doctors attached two arms from a deceased donor. The marathon surgery involved the connection of bones, blood vessels, muscles, tendons, nerves and skin on both arms. The team at Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins Hospital called it “the most complicated limb transplant procedure so far performed in the United States”. He was also given innovative treatment to prevent rejection of the new limbs, involving infusion of the deceased donor’s bone marrow cells, it is hoped it will reduce the need for anti-rejection

drugs, which can cause complications like infection and increased risk of cancer. However, doctors have warned he has a long way to go before he can be certain his body will not reject the transplant. Mr Marrocco told journalists at a news conference that he identifies the hands as his. “I hated not having arms,” he said. “Not having arms takes so much away from you. It (the transplant) has given me a lot of hope for the future. I feel like I’m getting a second chance to start over after I got hurt. I’m just excited for the future.” He added that losing his legs was less frustrating. “You talk with your hands,” he said. “You do so much with your hands. When you don’t have that, you’re kind of lost for a while.” Mr Marrocco said his main aim was to drive again preferably his new black Dodge Charger that has been waiting in his garage for three years. The former football player said he hopes to get back to playing sports, though he said he now aimed to take on handcycling. “One of my goals is

to hand-cycle a marathon,” he said. One of his doctors, Jaimie Shores, the clinical director of Johns Hopkins Hospital hand transplant program, said Mr Marrocco will spend the next two to three years doing “intense hand therapy” six hours a day, every day. He said Mr Marrocco had “a full-time job now that will take an incredible amount of effort”, as his nerves regenerate at one inch per month, teaching his body how to use his new limbs. Surgeons described the soldier as the “perfect person” for the surgery, because of his age and positive attitude. Dr Shores said: “He’s a young man with a tremendous amount of hope and he’s stubborn. Stubborn in a good way. The sky’s the limit with him.” The doctor who led his treatment, Andrew Lee, said previous double arm transplant patients had been able to learn to tie their shoelaces and use chopsticks within three years. The former infantryman is one of just seven people in the US who have successfully received double arm transplants.

Brazilian Nightclub Fire Kills 235

A

deadly fire broke out in a nightclub in Brazil leaving more than 235 dead and 117 injured. The fast-spreading blaze raged through the crowded Kiss nightclub in Santa Maria, with a cloud of toxic smoke setting off panic as party-goers gasping for air rushed to the exit. Witnesses said a flare or firework lit by members of a band onstage started the fire.

Survivors and rescuers reported that security guards tried to block people from leaving and a preliminary investigation has also found that the club’s single exit was blocked by the bodies of those already dead. Police inspector Marcelo Arigony confirmed survivors’ accounts that security guards initially tried to block people from exiting the club. Brazilian bars routinely make patrons pay their entire tab at the end of the night before they are allowed to leave. But Mr Arigony said the guards did not appear to block fleeing patrons for long. “It

was chaotic and it doesn’t seem to have been done in bad faith because several security guards also died,” he said. The blaze broke out while the band, called Gurizada Fandangueira, was performing, which was overcrowded with around 1,500 people. Some of those who escaped the building tried to smash a hole in the wall to allow other trapped people out. Fire chief Guido de Melo said there was panic after the fire started and many victims had been trampled. He said the main cause of death was asphyxiation, and that fire fighters

had a hard time getting inside the club because “there was a barrier of bodies blocking the entrance. Security guards blocked their exit and did not allow them to leave quickly. That caused panic,” he said. Within hours, the bodies of the victims were placed in a community gym, partially covered with black plastic as desperate family members identified their relatives. Many of those who died were under 20 years old, including some children. Mr Melo said the club was authorised to be open, but its permit was still in the process of being renewed. But he pointed to possible safety violations - from the flare that went off during the show to the locked door that kept people from getting out. “The problem was the use of pyrotechnics, which is not permitted,” Mr Melo said. Police inspector Sandro Meinerz said the band could be to blame for a pyrotechnics show and that manslaughter charges could be filed. The club’s management said in a statement that its staff were trained and prepared to deal with any emergency. Television images showed black smoke billowing out of the nightclub as shirtless young men who had attended a university party joined fire fighters using axes and sledgehammers to pound at windows and exterior walls to free those trapped inside. “There was so much smoke and fire, it was complete panic, and it took a long time for people to get out, there were so many dead,” survivor Luana Santos Silva told the Globo TV network. survivor, Michele Pereira, told the Folha de S Paulo newspaper she was near the stage when members of the band lit flares that started the fire. “The band that was onstage began to use flares and, suddenly, they stopped the show and pointed them upward,” she said. “At that point, the ceiling caught fire. It was really weak, but in a matter of seconds it spread.” Guitarist Rodrigo Martins told Radio Gaucha that the band had started playing at 2.15am. “We had played around five songs when I looked up and noticed the roof was burning,” he said. “It might have happened because of the Sputnik, the machine we use to create a luminous effect with sparks. It’s harmless; we never had any trouble with it. When the fire started, a guard passed us a fire extinguisher, the singer tried to use it but it wasn’t working.” He confirmed that accordion player Danilo Jacques, 28, had died, while the five other members made it out safely. Mr Martin told Radio Gaucha that the band was already seeing hostile messages. “People on the social networks are saying we have to pay for what happened,” he said. “I’m afraid there could be retaliation.” Brazil President Dilma Rousseff arrived to visit the injured after cutting short her trip to a Latin American-European summit in Chile. “It is a tragedy for all of us,” Ms Rousseff said. The blaze was the deadliest in Brazil since at least 1961, when a fire that swept through a circus killed 503 people in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro.

20 Daredevil’s No-Harness Stunt Tenerife Weekly - 1st February - 7th February 2013

FAMED daredevil tightrope walker nik Wallenda amazed onlookers as he climbed 200ft for his latest stunt, a high-wire walk over a busy road in his hometown in Florida without a safety harness. Wallender is a circus performer and six-time Guinness world record holder ... but the challenge, which stretched over route US-41 in Sarasota, no mean feat. He battled strong winds and it took him about 15 minutes to

trek from Bayfront Park to the Marina Tower for his latest World record breaking attempt Wallenda has been doing stunts like this for years but he really hit the big time when he crossed Niagara’s Horseshoe Falls last year. But for that challenge, 190ft above the raging torrent of water, he wore a safety harness. The 34-year-old is from a long line of acrobats known as the Flying Wallendas. His greatgrandfather died during a stunt in Puerto Rico in 1978.

Beckham Signs For St Germain

DAVID Beckham has joined Paris St Germain for a five-month contract after passing their medical. The former England captain was revealed by the French Ligue 1 club at a news conference in the capital yesterday. He has confirmed that he will have his salary from the club paid to a children’s charity.

The 37-year-old said that his French was poor and he would have to “brush up”. “I haven’t spoken French for quite a few years, since I was a school so that is definitely a few years,” he said. The only French word he managed was: “Bonjour”. He also confirmed that wife Victoria will live in the UK during the contract with their children because of their children’s schooling, he said. The 37-year-old had earlier posted a picture of himself on a plane on his Facebook page and wrote: “On way to Paris, excited. I will update you all later.” According to the website of Le Parisien, a private jet arrived in the

French capital this morning carrying “Le Spice Boy”. Beckham left LA Galaxy in December after six years playing in America’s Major League Soccer and is understood to have had several lucrative offers from around the world. Over the past few days he has been training with Arsenal but according to reports, manager Arsene Wenger said there were no plans to sign the former Manchester United midfielder who “doesn’t look at all to be in shape”. Beckham, who played a record 115 outfield games for England, left Old Trafford for

Real Madrid in 2003 before moving to the Galaxy in August 2007. While in LA he also had two stints on loan with Italian giants AC Milan. Paris Saint Germain are managed by Carlo Ancelotti, who was in charge at Milan during Beckham’s time there. Beckham will be adding the Ligue 1 title to his other three league successes in England, Spain and the US when he joins the club. PSG’s Qatari owners have invested more than £300m in players since buying the club in 2011. Beckham was brought in on a free transfer as he was a free agent.

Baby Swept Into Harbour

A baby, who was strapped into a buggy, was swept into freezing water as his mother walked along Watchet Harbour, Somerset. After hearing screams for help George Reeder, 63, a dock master, initially thought a dog had fallen in but was horrified to see the pushchair upturned in the water. He dived in and pulled it to the wall, before a member of the public helped attach a rope and hauled it to dry land, but the baby had spent around five minutes in the water. The infant was revived by a passer-by who administered CPR, before being taken to hospital, where he is believed to be out of intensive care. Mr Reeder, who has worked at the marina for 11 years, said he heard screaming close by, so

jumped on his bike to see what had happened. He added: “I don’t know exactly how he went in, but I was on the esplanade and heard the commotion and I assumed somebody’s dog had gone into the water, so I went cycling over. They were on the West Pier, where you walk up to the lighthouse, some way away, but the noise travels and I could hear screaming from a woman. The mother was there and she said ‘my baby has gone in the water’, so I went to the edge and I could see the pushchair upside down, floating away. I just jumped in and pulled the pushchair back over to the edge of the quay, and then somebody put a rope down over and I tied it on and they lifted it out. As far as I know, what the police told me was that the wind blew the buggy in.” Mr Reeder said it was “amazing” that the baby survived, adding: “The baby was still in the pushchair, it was very cold, it is amazing really because he must have been in there for a good five minutes, under the water. They

pulled up the pushchair and a lady started doing CPR, and then the coastguard came, and the ambulance and the police, so I backed out the way.” A local member of the coastguard took over the CPR from the woman and Mr Reeder said the baby started to take in breaths: “You could see his little mouth opening and taking in a breath and that’s when I thought it’s OK, he’s going to be OK. I know the family and the granddad came over and said he’s

21

out of intensive care now and on the ward. The poor mother, she’ll probably never get over something like that, it’s your worst nightmare.” A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “It is believed a gust of wind blew the buggy with the child in it into the water. A local fisherman rescued the six-month-old boy and he was airlifted to hospital for treatment. The condition of the baby is believed to be no longer life-threatening.”

Neeson Awarded Argentine Batman Freedom Of Ballymena UnMasked

Liam Neeson arrived back in his home town of Ballymena to a jubilant welcome as he accepted the freedom of the borough. The Oscarnominated actor, star of Schindler’s List and Taken was welcomed by cheers from a large crowd of well-wishers as he arrived at the reception in the Northern Ireland town. “It is great to be back,” he said. This is the second time Neeson has been offered the honour after refusing the County Antrim council’s recognition in 2000 amid controversy over alleged derogatory remarks. He was then quoted as saying in a US magazine that he felt “second class” as a Catholic growing up in the mainly Protestant town and felt he had to stay inside during the loyalist July 12 commemoration of the Battle of the Boyne. But after the ceremony he said: “I’m aware of the work the borough’s been doing in the past few years ... coming out of the darkness as we all have, and hopefully left all that behind us. These are new days, new times and

I’m just privileged to receive this.” Neeson started his career in Belfast’s Lyric Theatre and later joined the Abbey Theatre in Dublin before moving to London, then onto Hollywood. He was spotted by film director John Boorman while at the Abbey, and subsequently appeared in Boorman’s film Excalibur in 1981. He was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of a German businessman who prevented thousands of Jews from being sent to Nazi death camps in Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List. Another prominent role was his portrayal of Irish rebel leader Michael Collins in the film of the same name. His other work includes parts in The Mission, Suspect, Rob Roy and Batman Begins. Neeson was married to actress Natasha Richardson, who died in 2009 after suffering a serious head injury while skiing in Canada. He now lives in New York with their two sons and was awarded the OBE in 2000. Only three other people have been awarded the freedom of Ballymena: Ian Paisley, Dr Syd Millar and Sandy Spence.

Buenos Aires’ answer to Batman was named has been unmasked as Oscar Lefosse, a 43-year-old, retired policeman who drew headlines in 2010 when he began patrolling the outskirts of the city while wearing a blue mask and armour.

The self-styled superhero from Argentina was exposed after an alleged shoot-out with petty criminals. Named ‘Menganno’, which means Joe Blow in Spanish, his identity was revealed after he was charged with carrying an unlicenced gun after apparently firing at would-be muggers. He told police the alleged criminals shot at his car while he was driving with his wife, prompting him to return fire with his Glock pistol. It later emerged his gun licence had expired last year. Menganno, who has 33,000 followers on Facebook, posted a photo claiming it was his bullet-ridden car. But a Buenos Aires policeman told Argentinian news agency Telam that the shots had all been fired from inside the car. The police official added: “He could have killed somebody, an innocent bystander. He is irresponsible.” In 2010 Menganno was quoted as saying: “My goal is for all of us to be better and show more solidarity.

Injustice makes me sick.” He added that he only defended himself with a flashlight, pepper spray and a compass. Lefosse worked as a policeman from 1986 to 1996. However, stories of his alter ego Menganno actually tackling criminals are difficult to find - and for some he is seen as a joke figure rather than a true vigilante. Speaking on Argentinian TV after his unmasking, he said: “I do not walk around the street armed. I keep my gun at home.”

HoMEoWnErS will be eligible for Government-backed loans to pay for energy efficiency improvements under a flagship scheme which was launched on Monday. Ministers said the Green Deal would bring about a revolution in energy efficiency, and provide a much-needed boost to the economy.

Officials at the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) said information from suppliers suggested hundreds of households have been assessed for the Green Deal. But they said precise numbers could not be revealed because they were currently being collated for official statistics. However, reports suggest just five assessments had been carried out ahead of the launch, which will see Government-backed loans available for energy efficiency work made available for the first time. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said: “The Green Deal will help thousands of homes stay warm for less.” Those people will benefit from energy saving improvements - and their energy bills will fall. The UK green sector is a success story - it is the sixth largest in the world and has a crucial part to play in building a strong economy. The Green Deal will support thousands of jobs - not just over the next few years, but in the long-term.” The Green Deal involves having a home reviewed by an accredited assessor, who assess what upgrades

Facebook.com/TenerifeWeekly

U.k. Green Deal can be made and over what time period energy savings would cover the cost of the work. Green Deal Providers then quote for the work and households can get multiple quotes for some or all of the work. If they proceed, a Green Deal Installer will carry out the work. The cost is covered by a loan via the Green Deal Finance Company and repayments are added to the cost of the household electricity bill. The company has been created as a not-for-profit institution tasked with the costs of the loan as low as possible. But Ed Matthews, head of fuel poverty campaign group Energy Bill Revolution, said the Government’s plan did not go far enough. “The Green Deal and Energy Company Obligation, will not stop fuel poverty rocketing in the face of high gas prices,” he said. “We call on the Prime Minister to use money from the Carbon Tax to super-insulate this country’s homes. This will provide households with five times more subsidy to insulate their homes and not add a penny more to energy bills. It is enough to eliminate fuel poverty and in time cut bills for everyone. It is the just and fair solution.”

Bodies Discovered After Band Goes Missing A ToTAL of 20 members of a Mexican band disappeared last Friday night following the Colombian-style group Kombo Kolombia’s show in Monterrey the previous night, including 16 musicians and crew. At least eight bodies have been pulled from a well near the site where they went missing after a performance.

An official from the Nuevo Leon State Investigative Agency said the number of bodies found at an empty car park in the nearby town of Mina could increase. But the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to discuss the case, could not confirm whether the bodies were those of the band and their crew, People living near the bar in

Jeremy kyle Cancer Battle

TV CHAT show host Jeremy Kyle has gone abroad to recover after being treated for testicular cancer. He is understood to have had chemotherapy after discovering a growth last year.

The 47-year-old presenter has taken a break from recording his ITV daytime programme while he recovers. He is expected to return to work next week to begin filming new shows. The popular programme’s Facebook page carried a statement saying: “Jeremy was diagnosed with cancer just before Christmas. After an operation and chemotherapy treatment, I’m pleased to say he’s now on the mend. It’s been a really

tough couple of months for him and his family but he wanted to let you all know that he appreciates your continuing support. Jeremy will be back at work next week to start filming new shows which you’ll see on TV very soon.” A spokesperson for ITV said: “We wish Jeremy well and are pleased that he is making such good progress.” Kyle has hosted his hugely popular, TV programme for seven and a half years, putting dysfunctional relationships in the spotlight, and many have criticised it for glorifying “broken Britain”. Last week, his show was nominated for the National Television Awards for the best daytime TV show award, although it missed out to This Morning.

Hidalgo, north of Monterrey where the band had played a private show, reported hearing gunshots at around 4am on Friday, followed by the sound of vehicles speeding away, The official added that gunfire is common in the area, and that investigators found spent bullets nearby. Relatives filed an official missing report about their miss-

ing loved ones, after they lost mobile telephone contact with them after the performance. When family members went to the bar to investigate, they found the band members’ vehicles still parked outside. For three years, Kombo Kolombia has played a Colombian style of music known as vallenato, which is popular in Nuevo Leon state. Most of the group’s mu-

23

sicians were from the area, and have held large concerts in addition to bar performances. Members of other musical bands, usually groups that performed ‘narcocorridos’ celebrating the exploits of drug traffickers, have been killed in Mexico in recent years. But Kombo Kolombia did not play that type of music and its lyrics did not deal with violence or drug trafficking.

Rare 5 cent Coin Goes To Auction

A FIVE-CEnT coin which has a remarkable history could fetch as much as $5m at auction in the US. The 1913 Liberty Head nickel is one of only five known to exist. It was cast illegally, discovered in a car wreck t h a t killed i t s owner, d e clared a fake, forgotten for decades and then found to be the real thing. Douglas Mudd, curator of the Colorado museum which is holding the coin said: “Basically a coin with a story and a rarity will trump everything else.” Conservative estimates put its value at around $2m (£1.27m). But Mr Mudd thinks the sale price could reach the $5m (£3.18m)

mark. “A lot of this is ego,” he said of collectors who will bid for it when it comes up for auction on April 25 in Chicago. “I have one of these and nobody else does.” The nickel was one of five made in secret by Samuel Brown at the Philadelphia mint in late

1912, the final year of its issue, but it had the year 1913 cast on its face. Mr Brown offered them for sale in 1920, and the set was broken up in 1942. A North Carolina collector, George Walton, bought one for $3,750 (£2,386). The coin was with him when he was killed in a car crash in 1962, and was found among hundreds of others

scattered at the crash site. His sister was told it was a fake and stuck it in an envelope in a cupboard where it remained almost forgotten for 30 years u n t i l her death in 1992, when experts c o n -

firmed it was the longmissing fifth coin. Four siblings who inherited the nickel will split the money equally after it is sold. The current US record is $8m (£5.08m) for a 1933 Double Eagle, a $20 gold coin.

High Speed Train The Next Generation THE next phase of the Government’s high-speed rail network, taking the route beyond Birmingham, has been unveiled. The planned route will have five new stations at Manchester, Manchester Airport, Toton in the East Midlands, Sheffield and in Leeds.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin is bringing forward public consultation on the plans to 2013 in a bid to fast-track the project. The £32.7bn project is one of the coalition’s priorities as it tries to kick-start the economy. Construction is due to start in 2017 with the first trains in service by 2026. Pro-HS2 campaigners hailed the plan as “visionary” but there was immediate concern about the effect on the counties involved. Chancellor George Osborne insisted the network would be an “engine for growth” in the north and the Midlands, creating thousands of jobs. But he admitted communities along the route would face “very difficult” disruption to their lives but said the economic benefits were “pretty compelling”. The original link connects London to Birmingham, after which it splits with two branches, one up to Manchester and another to Leeds. The branch running via Manchester Airport will include a spur to Crewe to speed up trips to Liverpool and Scotland by better connecting to conventional servic-

es. The second branch, which includes Sheffield being served by a station at the Meadowhall shopping centre rather than the city centre, could prove more controversial. Officials said interconnections would be improved at any stations sited outside cities. A “parkway” station is set be included at Toton between Nottingham and Derby. But a proposed spur to Heathrow has been put on hold pending the results of Sir Howard Davies’ review of future airport capacity - which is not due to give a final report until the summer of 2015. Instead, passengers heading to the world’s busiest airport will have to change onto the new London east-west Crossrail service for an 11-minute transfer to terminals. The Department for Transport said the journey from Manchester to Birmingham would be reduced to 41 minutes and from Manchester to London to 1 hour 8 minutes - almost half the present times. Leeds will be only 57 minutes away from Birmingham compared to 1 hour 58 mins today, and 1hr 22mins away from London Euston, down from 2hrs 12 minutes - official projections say. Mr McLoughlin hailed the rail project as “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform Britain’s connectivity, capacity and competitiveness”. He admitted: “I know that this project is controversial” but added: “This is not about short-term popularity. It is about doing what is right for the country in the long-term.”

Jason McCartney MP Conservative MP for Colne Valley

25

The project has been welcomed by civic and business leaders in the region, who predict that the number of jobs created could be far higher than the 100,000 cited by the DfT. But it has also proved controversial, especially in picturesque Tory heartlands which will be affected, such as the Chilterns, infuriating MPs and countryside campaigners. Conservatives in Chancellor George Osborne’s Tatton constituency have already indicated that they will object to plans to route the line through parts of the Cheshire countryside. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, who is also MP for Sheffield Hallam, was forced to defend the move not to run the new line into Sheffield city centre. “The city centre option is not a cost-free one. It would be a lot more expensive and also the train link would be slower, which slightly defeats the purpose of the whole exercise,” he said. Labour backs HS2 - which was begun under its administration - but says there are “worrying signs” that the timetable for delivering it is slipping. The High Court is currently considering whether the first phase of the project, which will take high-speed trains from London to Birmingham, is legally flawed and needs to be reconsidered. The challenge was taken to the court by campaigners who accused the Government of failing to undertake a “strategic environmental assessment” or arrange an adequate consultation process.

Prehistoric Remains Identified

A nEW species, named Tyrannoneustes lythrodectikos, has been identified by scientists examining a fossil discovered more than a century ago, as a marine “superpredator” that lived 163 million years ago. It belonged to a group of ancient crocodiles with dolphin-

like features. An amateur fossil hunter found the partial skeleton in a clay pit near Peterborough in the early 1900s. But it is only now that experts have been able to confirm the identity of the remains, housed at The Hunterian Museum at the University of Glasgow.

The animal had pointed serrated teeth and a large gaping jaw suited to feeding on large-bodied prey. It represents a missing link between marine crocodiles that fed on small prey and their super-sized relatives. Dr Mark Young, from the University of Edinburgh, said: “It is satisfying to be able

to classify a specimen that has been unexamined for more than 100 years, and doubly so to find that this discovery improves our understanding of the evolution of marine reptiles.” Dr Neil Clark, palaeontology curator at The Hunterian Museum, added: “Little research has been done on this specimen since it was first listed in 1919.”It is comforting to know that new species can still be found in museums as new research is carried out on old collections. It is not just the new species that are important, but an increase in our understanding of how life evolved and the variety of life forms that existed 163 million years ago in the warm Jurassic seas around what is now Britain.”

kucher’s Terrifying Honour

A

SHTon Kutcher says playing Apple’s legendary co-founder Steve Jobs was a terrifying honour. He made his comment at the films world premiere at the Sundance Festival in Utah. The biopic covers the 30 years from Jobs’ teenage years to his time in charge of one of the most powerful and iconic technology brands across the globe.

jOBS was shown for the first time, 15 months after the Apple boss died from pancreatic cancer at the age of 56. 34-year-old Kutcher talked about his preparations to try and master Jobs’ posture, hand gestures and eccentricities, saying his “painstaking research” included watching more than 100 hours of footage of the Apple innovator. “To be playing a guy who so freshly is in people’s

minds, where everywhere you go you can run into people who met him or knew him or had seen a video of him... that’s terrifying because everyone is an appropriate critic,” Kutcher said. “Everyone can tear you apart. Everyone can look at any detail, a piece of clothing or a speech pattern and go ‘No, no, this is not what it was,’ and that’s really scary.” The film received applause from the audience, but it has not gone down as well with one of the people who worked most closely with Jobs. Hours before the screening, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak said the movie appeared to misrepresent several aspects of his and Jobs’ personalities and their early vision for the company: “Totally wrong... The ideas of computers affecting society did not come from Jobs,” Wozniak, who started Apple with Jobs and Ronald Wayne in a California garage in 1976. Kutcher said he hoped Wozniak would look more kindly on the movie when he had seen the whole

film: “I hope that when he sees the film, he feels that he was portrayed accurately, that the film accurately represents who he was and how he was, and more importantly, inspires people to go and

build things,” he said. jOBS is only one of two films currently in production about Steve Jobs. The other, based on Walter Isaacson’s official biography Steve Jobs, is being developed by screen

writer Aaron Sorkin of The West Wing and The Social Network fame. Wozniak is known to be involved with the second film, though no release date or casting has yet been announced.

60th Anniversary Of The Queen’s Coronation Buckingham Palace has confirmed that the Queen will mark the 60th anniversary of her coronation with a special service at Westminster Abbey on June 4th. Accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the royal family, the monarch will also attend a lunch to mark the occasion. The Queen is expected to travel to Westminster Abbey by car rather than state landau. The Abbey has announced it is to stage a series of events to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty’s coronation. Amongst them will be a coronation concert on June 13 and an exhibition to include the coronation chair used by kings and queens since the 14th century. An estimated three million people

lined the streets of London on June 2, 1953, to see the Queen travel in a golden state coach from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey. Prime ministers and heads of Commonwealth states were among the 8,000-strong congregation as the Queen took the coronation oath, 18 months after succeeding to the throne. Millions more watched around the world as the Queen was handed the four symbols of authority: the orb, the sceptre, the rod of mercy and the royal ring of sapphire and rubies. In a radio broadcast at the time the Queen said: “Throughout all my life and with all my heart I shall strive to be worthy of your trust.” Buckingham Palace has also announced a coronation festival will take place in the gardens of Buckingham Palace between July 11 and 14. Open to the public and at a cost of £30 during the day or £90 in the evening, the festival will see

200 companies holding the Royal Warrant promote their goods and services.

But those expecting a Jubileestyle calendar of events will be disappointed. Buckingham Palace has

Crocodile Escape Up to 15,000 crocodiles escaped from the Rakwena Crocodile Farm in the far north of South Africa when its owners were forced to open the gates to prevent a storm surge. South African police are urging experts to come forward and help rescue them after only 2,000 had been returned to the farm.

Hangwani Mulaudzi, a spokesman for the police in Limpopo Province, said: “Due to the number of crocodiles that have been washed away there is a need for expertise, people who have expertise to come and assist.” News reports from the scene show people hunting down smaller crocodiles at night, tying them up and taking them back to the farm.

“Before there were only a few crocodiles in the Limpopo River. Now there are plenty,” said Zane Langman, the son-in-law of Rakwena’s owner. “We go catch them when farmers phone us and say crocs are around.” Mr Langman earlier used a motor boat to rescue some local residents who had climbed onto the roof of a garage to escape the rising floods. “When we arrived there,

the crocodiles were circling them,” he said. Police spokesman Hangwani Mulaudzi said: “Police, the army, and people from the community are assisting.” The surrounding province of Limpopo has been hit by serious floods which have killed 10 people and left many homeless. No incidents involving crocodile attacks have been reported.

27

confirmed the Abbey service and coronation festival will be the only key events of coronation year.

Burt Reynolds In Intensive Care

Veteran actor Burt Reynolds is in intensive care in Florida where he is being treated for a severe case of flu. The 76-year-old is believed to have been “severely dehydrated” when he was admitted.

His representative Erik Kritzer declined to say which hospital the actor was in, saying: “He would like that (kept) private. He is doing better at this time. We expect as soon as he gets more fluids, he will be back in a regular room.” The Hollywood star, famous for his roles in Smokey And The Bandit and Deliverance, underwent a quintuple heart bypass in 2010. He has also spent time in rehab when he was treated for an addiction to prescription drugs. There has been an outbreak of flu across the US, reaching epidemic levels in some states.

RECORD BREAkING JOUR

G

rAHAM Hughes, 33, an adventurer from Liverpool is just one step away from gaining an entry in the Guinness Book of records for visiting every country in the world without flying.

He began the challenge to visit all of the 193 UN-recognised nations in January 2009. He has since undertaken “surface journeys” to all the world’s hot spots, including Iraq, Afghanistan and North Korea, and visited every sovereign nation in the world including Vatican City, Palestine, Taiwan, West-

Bahamas

Afganistan ern Sahara and Kosovo, which do not have seats at the UN. But Guinness World Records ruled that his feat would not stand as he had entered Russia without gaining a valid visa. Mr Hughes’ visit to the country came after he waded across the River Narva from Estonia. This week, he visited Russia again with the hope of officially completing his challenge, travelling 25 hours by train from London Victoria to Gdansk in Poland before taking a bus across the border. When he took up the challenge, Guinness set rules for the record including not using private transport over large

distances or hitchhiking. So Graham has completed his journeys through a combination of train, taxi and cargo ship journeys and kept GPS records from all his visits. He made the trips on a tiny budget, spending less than £7,000 a year in the first two years and just under £3,000 thereafter. And along the way he’s also had to take into account countries ever changing borders - South Sudan became a nation in 2012 so Graham travelled there in November of that year by public transport. His longest journey was a 32-day round trip from Australia to Nauru, the world’s smallest republic. He said the

island in the Micronesia archipelago was worth the journey, as was Palau in the Pacific, which he describes as an “unspoilt tropical paradise with amazing people”. But his travels have also presented some dangers. On a visit to Congo, Mr Hughes was jailed for six days and was only freed with British consulate support. He also had problems in Pakistan and Mr Hughes was not even allowed out of the port at Karachi because authorities deemed it too dangerous. He says his most memorable time was four days he spent on a leaky wooden canoe crossing the open ocean from Senegal to Cape Verde.

New Life In The Uk Citizenship Test

For example, while foreigners will be expected to know British history stretching back to the Stone Age, through to the Romans, Norman Conquest and the Magna Carta, they will also be tested on last year’s Olympics and “Britons’ unique sense of humour and satire”. The Two Ronnies and Monty Python are even on the syllabus, while British cultural and artistic heritage, from the music of composer Henry Purcell to the worldwide influence of the Beatles and Andrew Lloyd Webber, and the nation’s national parks all feature in the 45-minute test. Foreign nationals will be questioned on literary masterpieces by poets and authors such as Geoffrey Chaucer, Jane Austen and Wilfred Owen, as well as the lives of some

of Britain’s most celebrated writers, scientists and politicians, from William Shakespeare and Robert Burns to Isaac Newton and Winston Churchill also feature. Episode 7 Gets Its Director!!

#I’m not dead tweets Rourke!

I’m writing this standing up I’m so excited! Disney and Lucasfilm announced this week that acclaimed director and self-confessed scifi geek, JJ Abrams, will be directing the 1st in the recently announced 3rd Star Wars trilogy, following the acquisition of the mega-franchise by Disney. This makes Abrams an almost God-like entity to most scifi fans as he now controls not 1, but the 2 biggest scifi franchises in this galaxy, having directed the recent Star Trek reboot and its sequel “Star Trek-into Darkness”, out this summer. The directors credentials are impeccable with TV series such as “Lost” and “Fringe” and movies like “Clo-

verfield” and “Super 8” the man is a genre fan first, writer and director 2nd, he said of the announcement, “To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honour, I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid,” Lucas also had nothing but praise for JJ saying, “I’ve consistently been impressed with JJ as a filmmaker and a storyteller. He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands.” The director will also receive a producer’s credit through his production company “Bad Robot”. Star Wars Episode 7 is due to be released in the summer of 2015.....

WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO TIL THEN????

Rylan will Sue” Speidi” Celebrity Big Brother winner Rylan Clark has vowed to sue fellow housemates Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt over their bullying accusations.

Hollywood actor and ex-boxer Mickey Rourke is the latest in a long line of celebrities to be proclaimed dead by online hoaxers. The pranks pop up on twitter, Facebook and other social networks and have been

increasing in the past yearone of the first to go viral was the rumour that Eddie Murphy had been killed in a snowboarding accident, which seems to be the favourite “death” of the hoaxers, with the latest, Mickey Rourke and Denzel Washington meeting the same fate, also popular is “falling off a

cliff in New Zealand” (Jeff Goldblum, Tony Danza) and “dying in a car crash” (Usher). The rumours apparently originate from the site “Global Associated News”, well known for its online pranks. Mind you if you’ve seen any recent photos of Rourkeit’s not surprising a lot of people thought he was dead!!

The Shining? More like the Dulling!!

As a lifetime film fan and avid reader of movie magazines, every now and then I like to rent or buy a classic and watch it on my night off with my wife, sharing with her something special that she probably hasn’t seen, so recently when I read about a new documentary called “Room 237”, all about a subculture of fans of Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining”, who all believe it contains hundreds of hidden messages ranging from, “It’s a film about the persecution of the North American Indian” to “It’s an admission that Kubrick faked the moon landings!!??” I thought it would be a great time to watch it again (I think I saw it as a teenager but my memory isn’t great......hang on I’ve forgotten what I was doing....) so, on my

night off we settled down on the couch with “ snicky snackys” and pressed play...Oh dear. To say time hasn’t been kind would be an understatement, the first thing I noticed was Jack Nicholson’s pantomimed performance, most people know that his character “Jack Torrence” descends into madness at the haunted “Overlook hotel” but he should be an Everyman at the start, yet from the 1st scene he just emanates “nutjob” from every pore, making the “transformation” less dramatic. Next we have Shelley Duvall who plays his wife-starts a bit strange and ends up becoming what must be one of the most annoying female performances in modern film, wide eyed, relentlessly screaming whilst clutching a knife like a limp piece of celery, JUST STAB THE LOON WILL YOU!!!! Add to this a director obsessed

with the colour red (yes I get the symbolism-it’s the colour of blood!), a theme that will eventually be put to use far more effectively in “The Sixth Sense”, scenes that are dragged out to preposterous lengths that could have achieved more if edited down to a shorter length, what has to be the most intrusive soundtracks I’ve ever heard-all cutlery in a blender and nails down blackboards almost constantly for over 2 hours!! No wonder Writer, Stephen King disowned it!! I went to bed realising those 2 hours of my life I would never get back, is it a case of the “Emperor’s New Clothes” -it’s Stanley Kubrick so it must be brilliant, has it aged particularly badly...or is it just me? Let me know what you think and if you’ve been disappointed, re-watching a classic, we’d love to hear about it!

Elton & David Present 2nd Son

SIr Elton John and partner David Furnish have introduced their second son Elijah to the world for the first time, via a Hello Magazine shoot. The baby was born on January 11, weighing 8lb 4oz, reportedly to the same surrogate mother who gave them their first son Zachary, who is now two. Elton, 65-year-old singer talked openly of his love for his sons. He said: “Elijah completes our family in a most precious and perfect way. I have learned that a parent’s capacity for love is endless. When another child is born, our depth of love just grows deeper and wider, so it was very emotional.” Little is known about the surrogate mother of the boys. Her identity has been kept a closely guarded secret but Sir Elton was quick to praise the woman who has provided the couple with their two sons: “She is a wonderful, kind and loving woman, who we love like a sister. We have a very close bond with her and were in constant touch throughout the pregnancy, getting updates, seeing scans and sharing all

the little details that make those nine months so exciting. She has given us two amazing gifts and we in turn have a duty of care to her and are fiercely protective of her anonymity.”

Daddy Buble

SInGEr Michael Buble and his wife have announced that she is pregnant with the couple’s first child. The news was broken by a video posted on Buble’s website and also on youTube under the account of his wife, Luisana Lopilato. The 22-second video, set to Buble’s song Haven’t Met you yet, shows a scan of the baby accompanied by the words “mini Buble”. It ends with the text: “We’re having a baby Buble!!!” written in both English and Spanish. The 37-year-old has been married to the Argentinian actress since 2011, after meeting two years earlier on a South American tour. The Canadian singer’s clean-cut image and traditional, big band songs have seen him sell millions of albums around the world and pick up several Grammy awards. His most recent album was a record of Christmas classics, released in 2011, and Buble is due to play 10 dates at London’s 02 Arena this summer. Lopilato made her name as a model and an actress in Argentine sitcoms and soap operas.

The boys are at least halfbrothers as they share the same egg donor, but it has not been revealed who the donor is or whether Elton or David is Elijah’s biological father.

Sharples in Session By John Sharples

Les Marvellous Housey Housey

I went to the cinema this week with a friend. It’s been a while since I went and it was great to see a wonderful movie on the big screen again. Les Miserables is a real treat. It holds you in its grip and the music gets into your brain for days afterwards. The songs were all in English and what little dialogue there is was in Spanish. The sets and music were stunning and the movie is taking awards all over the place. Although Russell Crowe is no great singer, he is a darn sight better than Pierce Brosnan was in Mamma Mia! If you get the chance to go and see it, then go. I am now waiting for the DVD release so that I can relive the moment all over again.

My friend Chris and I took a trip to the local Spanish Bingo complex and had half an hour of bingo. It wasn’t very busy and after each game, someone left. By the time we won a line the prize money

had dropped to 1 euro and 66 cents. It was hardly worth playing at all, but we had a laugh. I’ve never heard numbers called so fast. Even with only one ticket it is almost impossible to keep up. I won more on the one armed bandit at the entrance than I did on the bingo!

Mind Your Language

Figures from the 2011 British census show that 138,000 people living in England and Wales do not speak English. I don’t know why some people find that shocking. If they had held that census in Spain, they would have found thousands of British people who don’t speak a word of Spanish. The current plan is that people have to be able to speak English to a certain level if they want to become British citizens. If the Spanish authorities brought in such a law, they would be sending the Brits back to Blighty in their droves. Although I speak fluent Spanish, I was once stopped

by the police whilst driving in Adeje. I used to only speak English with the police, stupidly thinking that they might leave me alone if I couldn’t understand them. On this occasion, the policeman spoke great English and admonished me roundly for not being able to speak his language after living here for years. After that little episode, I decided

to speak Spanish in future. To those of you who live in Tenerife, Spanish isn’t difficult to learn. It only takes a little dedication and you only need to spend about 10 or 15 minutes a day learning it. You will be surprised how quickly you can learn. Go on! Give it a try! You will surprise yourself and it will enhance your life here.

politely waved back. It took me back to my days working on the holiday camps, when a “Noddy Train” would drive around the camp for the kids all day long.

We were going to go paragliding, but settled for the train instead. Next time I’ll take a cushion. I ended up with a sore bum and a bad back.

The Wally Trolley I find it incredulous that there is still no public hospital in the south of Tenerife. At a time when a giant super port is being built in Granadilla and tunnels are being dug through the island

from North to South, it seems odd that the hospital building is still just plodding along.

There was a poster campaign a few years ago and that seems to have fizzled out. The hospital in the north is

now filled to capacity and it isn’t unusual for patients to spend a day lying in a bed in a corridor. It is surely time to get on with the job of completing the building work and giving the people in the south something that they really need!

Known by many people as “The Wally Trolley”, the little tractor converted into a train that runs around the resorts was parked up as I walked past. My friend and I decided to get on board for a giggle and off we went at top speed over bumps and cobbles. We waved at people and they

MOTHER GUN AGONy

MoTHEr has lost a fourth child to the gun violence which has turned Chicago city into the murder capital of the US.

Ronnie Chambers, aged 34, was shot in the head early on Saturday while sitting in a parked car on the city’s west side. His mother, Shirley Chambers, has previously lost two other sons and a daughter in separate shootings stretching back 18 years. “Right now, I’m totally lost because Ronnie was my only surviving son,” the grieving mother said. Her first child, Carlos aged 18, was shot and killed by a high school classmate in

1995 after an argument. Her daughter Latoya, then 15, and her other son Jerome were shot and killed within months of each other in 2000. “What did I do wrong? I was there for them. We didn’t have everything we wanted but we had what we needed,” she said. “They took my only child. I have nobody right now. That’s my only baby,” she added. Ronnie Chambers recently appeared on an episode of The Ricki Lake Show described as a former gang member. He told the TV host that he wanted to turn his life around and that his siblings’ murders had prompted him to “do something different”. Mrs Chambers said her son was following through on his pledge, despite the pervading gun culture. “We need tougher gun laws, where people will know they will be in prison for a long time if they choose to

pick up a gun and take a life,” she told the Sun-Times newspaper. Her son was one of at least five people gunned down over the weekend in Chicago. A gunman opened fire on three men on the city’s south side, killing two of them and wounding the third, police said. Later detectives were called to the scene of another shooting in which a man in his 30s and a teenager were killed. Chicago’s murder count soared above 500 last year for the first time since 2008. But it has improved; the city’s homicide rate was almost double in the early 1990s when it averaged around 900. Since then violent crime has fallen significantly, and continues to fall, in America’s biggest cities, including New York and Los Angeles. Chicago’s current record stands in sharp contrast.

THROUGH THE KEYHOLE By Colin Haydon

Winter Gardens - Golf del Sur - Apartment

Clear Blue Skies Group SL in Fañabé is one of Tenerife largest and most successful Estate Agencies. Run by a British family, they have a number of nationalities which means that in this office, many languages are spoken including Spanish, English, French, German, Italian and Flemish. This week we feature a property at the less expensive end of the market but what a bargain it is. At a sale price of just 99.950 euros this beautiful 1 bedroom ground floor apartment is some 30.000 euros below the current market price. It’s on Winter Gardens, Golf del Sur. Built around 8 years ago, this popular complex has a bowling green, large pool, bar, and a quality restaurant all on site. There are numerous restaurants, shops and bars opposite in the Aguamarina centre, and of course the San Miguel marina is just across the road. Golf Del Sur has become an extremely popular choice for both holidaymakers and residents over recent years. Several new constructions coupled with the established older complexes have created a varied and interesting place to live. The San Blas centre provides a focal point for evening entertainment and its pedestrianized piazzas provide safe secure evening dining al fresco. There are sports bars, tapas restaurants, in short something for everyone. Just a kilometre away is Las

Chafiras, home to the large Mercadona and Hiperdino supermarkets, plus of course Iceland. There are also some great furniture, DIY and electrical shops here. Winter Gardens has an active bowls scene, with leagues and tournaments aplenty. It’s a clean, well cared for place to live. The apartment itself is presented in excellent condition. There is a spacious lounge, American style kitchen, double bedroom and two bathrooms, one en suite. Not only does it have a spacious terrace but there’s also a large lawned garden to enhance the feeling of space. Great location, great property, great price!

WHOPPER SEND OFF DAVID Kime from Pennsylvania, who enjoyed a life-long passion for fast food, was given a whopper of a send-off before reaching his final resting place. His family arranged for his hearse together with the entire funeral procession, to take one last spin through his favourite Burger King drive-thru before reaching the cemetery. on reaching the drive-thru each mourner picked up a Whopper Jr for the road. The burger was among Mr

Kime’s favourites and he got one last Whopper Jr too, it was placed on top of his flagdraped coffin at the cemetery. Daughter Linda Phiel said the stop-off was a happy way of honouring her father and the things that brought him joy. “He lived a wonderful life and on his own terms,” she said her father had done what he wanted and eaten what he wanted since her mother, Grace, died about 25 years ago. “My mother kind of kept him in check. When she died, for a while, he would eat with us. But he considered us health freaks because we ate things that were green, like broccoli.” For many years, Mr Kime

was borderline diabetic and had a pacemaker. Ms Phiel told him a healthy diet would help him live longer. “He would say, ‘I won’t live longer, it will just seem like it because I’ll be more miserable faster’,” she said. “He was not prejudiced. He would go to any fast food place anyone invited him to.” She said also he liked tacos, pizza, hamburgers, sandwiches and hot dogs. Margaret Hess, the manager of the Burger King branch who organised 40 burgers for the funeral procession, said she was pleased to know Mr Kime was a loyal customer until “the very end”. Mr Kime, a World War Two veteran, died on January 20 at the age of 88.

The Homemade Beef Burger

Okay, so we all know the recent news about horse meat in Value burgers. Tesco’s having the worst percentage by the FSA (food standards agency)

at just over 29%, and the worst thing about it is that nobody knows just how long that these burgers have contained traces of horsemeat.

Horsemeat is safe to eat, and in many countries is readily available over the counter at most butchers; but that doesn’t excuse the fact that when you buy a “beef burger” you expect to

be eating just that! It isn’t illegal to eat horse meat in the UK, but what is illegal is if it doesn’t state that the product contains it. Value burgers are made with a minimum requirement of 47%

meat – the rest of the burger is generally made up of rusk, meat fat and soya protein – but the astonishing thing about the 47% meat requirement is that within that percentage the term ‘meat’ it can be made up of keletal muscle with naturally included or adherent fat and connective tissue, which has been mechanically stripped from the carcass. I will bypass ever buying a value burger again! So – why do we need to buy these little beef patties, when it is extremely easy to make your own. You can be satisfied that it is 100% beef with no other additives and you can flavour it is you wish.

Ingredients 1 small onion (finely chopped) 500g lean minced beef 1 egg (beaten) Salt and Pepper to season (a good pinch)

Method:

Place all the burger ingredients in a mixing bowl, mix it altogether until it is well combined. Using your hands, shape into four equal-sized patties. Preheat the grill to hot. Cook the burgers under the grill for 15 minutes, or until cooked through, turning once. Check they are cooked through, by inserting a toothpick to ensure that the juices run clear.

Pugh’s Tips:

Why not put some diced fresh herbs into the mixture. Just enough to given it that bit extra flavour! I was once in a hotel and ordered a burger via room service. It was probably one of the most delicious homemade burger I have ever had, and was simply made with a pinch of fresh rosemary! Use minced lamb, and add some fresh mint or a teaspoon of mint sauce for that minty lamb burger!

Dad’s Despair Dumped and desperate

I’m happily married to a great man. Before we met he’d fathered a daughter with his girlfriend but the relationship broke down and they split up. He looked after his daughter 4-days a week but this one day, when he went to collect her, they’d vanished and left no forwarding address. His daughter was only 18 months old and he was devastated. We’ve recently found out that his mum and step dad had been seeing his daughter from then, until she was 5. He was devastated when he realised they’d been seeing her behind his back but they said they didn’t want to risk his past affecting his new life with me. He’s desperate to find his daughter but we don’t know where to start as it was 8 years since he last saw her. Sue

It breaks my heart to hear stories like this, so many men are quite happy to shun their responsibilities but the minute one comes along who wants to be a father, he gets treated like this. I’m astonished by the way his parents have behaved but the immediate issue is to try to find this poor girl and reunite her with her dad. I can’t pretend that there’s an easy answer to this sorry situation but your first step must be to speak to a solicitor. Yes it’s going to cost money, probably a bundle but I know if this was my daughter, no amount of money would keep me from seeing her. You might get lucky or you might end up with a long search on your hands but there really isn’t any other alternative. There are numerous “people” searches you can do on the internet as well as searching through the Electoral Roll. Speaking to your bloke’s parents might give you some clues as to a general area where you should start looking but going on past experience, I wouldn’t hold out too much hope of them being much help! Be guided by your solicitor and cross your fingers. Good luck guys.

I’m 32 years old and going through my first break up. I know most people have had loads of boyfriends by this age but I was a late starter and was with this bloke for 5 years. Now, he’s dumped me and I feel like my life has ended. I can’t bear to get out of bed or go to work and I keep thinking he dumped me because I was not pretty or thin enough so I haven’t eaten for days. I don’t know how I’ll ever get back to normal, let alone meet someone else. And at this age, I know time’s running out.

Susan Six months from now Susan, you’ll wonder why you ever wrote to me in the first place. Trust me, anyone and everyone who’s been through a breakup knows exactly how you

Hairy Face

I’ve got an embarrassing problem which is making my life hell. For the last few years I’ve been growing loads of hair on my face. At first I plucked it out, but as it got worse I started using hair removal cream but that’s left me with stubble. I’m so paranoid about it I always wear scarves to cover

up my chin and loads of make up but I’m convinced everyone at work has seen it and is taking the mickey behind my back. I’m straight and fancy men, but I’m worried this means I’ve got too many male hormones. Leah

This is obviously a huge problem for you Leah but I

can promise you that you’ve blown it out of proportion in your mind. When you look in the mirror, you know every inch of your face so you’re bound to mentally zoom in on the areas that you dislike. You’ve already found that potions and lotions don’t do the trick for you so you really do need to try something else. Your GP is the best person to advise you on any medical conditions you have but reading your letter, I would bet that you’ve been too embarrassed to make an appointment. Unfortunately, until you do actually bite the bullet and speak to your doctor, you’re going to be stuck in this rut. Unless you turn this around right now, it’s going to continue to ruin your life. Take a deep breath, pick up the phone and get through this one painful moment, if you do, this time next year, you will probably be a thousand times happier. Good luck.

feel. If I’m honest, the fact you were a late starter is probably a positive in this situation.

At your age, rational thought should kick in a lot sooner than if you were in your teens. Right now you feel like your whole world is caving in but really, it isn’t. It’s an age old cliché but its spot on, time really is a great healer. Taking some time out to get over things and adjust is definitely a good idea but eventually, you’ve got to bounce back and get back out there and live your life. As for starving yourself? You know full well that’s not going to change a thing and can only harm you rather than help you. Whatever the reasons for this guy dumping you, have some self-respect and don’t let his actions affect your life in the long term. You never know what around the next corner in this life. Mr Right could be sat somewhere right now just waiting for you to show up. Just hang in there and believe what I’m saying, please?

Haunted by him

My step dad touched me up 7 years ago and I was too scared to tell Mum, but eventually, years later I had a daughter of my own and couldn’t bear the thought of him being near her so I plucked up the courage to tell my mum. She kicked him out but I didn’t go to the police as I was scared they wouldn’t believe me. I’m still haunted by this and I texted Dad the

other day saying: ‘Tell me why you did it.’ But he rang the police who told me if I didn’t stop texting him I’d be arrested. Should I go to the police or will they think I’m making it all up for not telling them sooner? Andrea

It’s important that you do what’s right for you Andrea but I can tell you that this misery will only get worse

until you get proper help. Going to the police could well be the start of that for you. You’re certainly not alone in thinking you won’t be taken seriously; I’ve heard countless victims say exactly the same thing. With the recent high profile cases and arrests though, that situation is changing. To me, it sounds very much like this freak is running scared and by contacting the police to complain about you, he feels he is protecting himself somehow. Don’t let his tactics dictate your actions; he’s relying on you to be feeling exactly as you are right now. My personal thoughts are that you should go to the police, what your stepfather did to you could just be the tip of the iceberg and he may well be abusing other children. The police are duty bound to take every allegation seriously so you shouldn’t worry about not being believed.

Along Came a Spider Channel 4 - 22:00 - 00:05 Morgan Freeman returns as forensic psychologist Dr. Alex Cross in this thriller based on the novel by James Patterson (whose work also formed the basis of the hit Kiss the Girls). Gary Soneji (Michael Wincott) is a brilliant but remorseless psychopath who has landed a teaching position at an exclusive private school in Washington, D.C. Using his extensive knowledge of kidnapping (he’s taught a class on Charles Lindbergh), Soneji abducts one of his students - Megan (Mika Boorem), whose father Hank Rose (Michael Moriarty) is a United States senator.

nd

Ollie MacArthur (Dylan Baker), the detective investigating the case, has strong words for Jezzie Flannigan (Monica Potter), the Secret Service agent who mistakenly let Megan slip through her fingers. But when the kidnapper contacts Dr. Cross, the psychologist is brought in on the case, and Cross seeks out Flannigan, who he believes might have a valuable insight into the case. Soon, Cross and Flannigan come to the terrible realization that this crime only represents the tip of the iceberg for the ruthless Soneji. Along Came a Spider also features Penelope Ann Miller, Jay O. Sanders, and Kim Hawthorne.

Being Eileen

BBC 1 - 22:35 - 23:05 Being Eileen is a new six-part, heartwarming comedy starring Sue Johnston (The Royle Family, Coronation Street) which follows the lives of the large, close-knit and dysfunctional Lewis family from Birkenhead, Merseyside. In episode one, chaos descends on the Lewis family as it appears that Eileen has gone missing and isn’t answering her mobile phone, prompting daughter Paula to have a meltdown and drag the rest of the family into a search to find her. The series features Sue Johnston as Eileen Lewis, the recently widowed matriarch of the Lewis clan, her son and daughter-in-law Pete (Dean Andrews, Last

43

Tango In Halifax) and Mandy (Julie Graham, Survivors), daughter and son-in-law Paula (Elizabeth Berrington, In Bruges, Stella) and Ray (William Ash, Shameless, Waterloo Road) and both couples’ respective children, Ethan and Melissa, and Jack and Liam. The recent trip to Lapland (in the successful Christmas 2011 special) changed Eileen’s outlook on life and left her determined to live life to the full rather than ‘sitting in the corner dressed in black’. But life back home is a little less inspiring than Lapland’s spectacular vistas and Northern lights. Eileen struggles to find her own peace and joy in life after Ted, as often confounded by her hilariously self-centred children and loveable but trying grandchildren.

Africa BBC 1 - 21:00 - 22:00 In the final episode, entitled The Future, David Attenborough experiences the realities of rhino poaching and examines the challenges elephants face with an increasing human population encroaching on their habitat. He meets Maasai warriors that have become lion guardians, and witnesses local conservation in action on the tropical East coast, as he concludes the Africa series. In Kenya, David has a memorable encounter with a young rhino called Elvis, brought up by the

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. His horn has been removed to protect him from poachers. Elsewhere in Africa, on average two rhinos are killed every day, and conservationists are attempting to protect one of the last great gatherings of black rhinos in the Kalahari. In Mozambique, civil war has raged through Gorongosa National Park, decimating what was once a wildlife haven. An ambitious team of scientists and conservationists is attempting to assess the damage and whether it can thrive again in the future.

Pool Superleague HUNTERS SAvAGED By LIONS 1st round of the EXPrESS BAr DELIVErIES CUP

Red Pride 6 v 5 Barracuda Hunters Edge of the seat pool at the Red Lion Bar. The Hunters took an early lead and the first 3 frames with Rachael saving the Pride in the last single. By the end of the doubles the Hunters looked like they had it in the bag and were leading 4-2. Simon and Erle played what could possibly be the longest frame in history, where the food was served, eaten and cleared away before a result was declared. The frame could have gone either way but Simon (handicapped by a dislocated elbow) scraped the win for The Pride. Helen (drawn once again against Rachael) dispatched the Prides newcomer making it 5-3 to the hunters with 2 frames to play. Steve and Spike won the last two frames against Roger and Steve respectively for a 5-5 draw. The captains chose Spike for The Pride and Steve for the Hunters to play the decider and The Pride finally celebrated their first win of

the season. Thanks Hunters for an amazing night (even though it was midnight by the time we finished). Bar 180 B 5 v 6 Treasure Island It was a close match down on the Golf in the Bar 180. Graeme and Stevie were chosen for the decider and Stevie came out on top taking Treasure Island through to the next round. Barracuda Bandits 6 v 5 Bar Tasca B A nerve tingling night at the Barracuda where the Bandits for the second week running robbed their opponents, after looking like losers for most of the game. It went to the inevitable playoff and finished close to midnight, after a tense battle between Paul and Nathan. Well played Tasca B but the Bandits go through to the next round. Britannia Inn 3 v 7 Bar Tasca A Tasca A back on form, granddad struggling with his zimmer frame, with the 1st leg as the rest of the team in pole position. Took the game at the end 7-3 a big well done to Gaaaaaaaary as his own team tries to put him off...

lol however he managed to grab the win. Well done Tasca A back on sharp game play. (???????......Ed.) Clouseaus Diamonds 6 v 4 Lowrys The second time the Diamonds have played a Blue Division team and it proves that the standard in both divisions is about the same. A close and friendly game that could have gone either way. Lowrys Captain and Owner Don has suffered a nightmare week, first a fire in the stockroom causing heavy smoke damage, then on the way to the game he hit a pothole and bent a wheel. Then of course his team were edged out of the cup, but I’m sure they’ll do themselves proud in the league. Vivo 9 v 1 Chipeque A new look side from Chipeque embarked on an equally new looking Vivo terrace. Much more space afforded to their now only English league tables, however of no help to Chipeque as only their young captain Bryn managed to score a single win. Not that the play was all one sided though, there is no doubt that there is a good side in the making, with Daz and Peter being just outdone by both Valeri and Pedro. Young Lyn too looked much more comfortable at the table than some weeks back, and no doubt will be taking some scalps in the near future. McLaren Unveils New MP4-28

MCLAREN became the second squad to unveil its 2013 challenger with the public launch of the Mercedes-powered MP4-28.

McLaren finished the 2012 season in third place in the constructors’ championship behind Red Bull and Ferrari, despite scoring as many victories as the world champion squad with seven. Although the Wokingbased squad had one of the quickest cars during most of the season, the MP4-27’s reliability did not prove strong enough and both Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button were out of the championship fight in the latter part of the year. McLaren’s driver line-up features a major change, as Hamilton departs for Mercedes after six seasons racing for the Woking squad. The Briton has been replaced by Mexican Sergio Perez, who will partner Button as the former world champion enters

his fourth season with McLaren. Button acknowledged that the new car had superficial similarities to last year’s model, but said there had been enormous changes in the design. “It is exactly the same colour scheme and I think it looks similar to last

year, but it is completely different to last year under the skin,” he said. “We know the regulations haven’t changed much since 2012 but it’s enough to make a difference.” The new MP4-28 will take to the track for the first time next week at Jerez.

Only 11 teams:

After fighting against F1 extinction from the moment they were granted an official entry back in 2009, time finally ran out for HRT over the winter, leaving just 11 teams, and 22 cars, on the grid for 2013. HRT’s demise will not cause any reverberations, one knock-on effect for should be a slightly more exciting Q1 sessions on Saturdays. Although the reduced grid means that six, rather than seven, cars will drop out in Q1 and Q2, should Caterham and Marussia continue at the back of the field then two drivers, rather than one, from a midfield team will drop out of the first session with them.

One less race:

Chipeque Nomads - Target A The Wild bull coast FM Darts league was in full flow last Sunday with teams playing some important games to establish league placings. In the second division Chipeque Coast FM kept hold of the top spot with a win over El Candil de la Abuela in Parque del a Reina, Chipeques Captain John told us he was carried by the team on the day after losing his singles and doubles games but Paul on form (even in his Mr and Mrs team in doubles) the team managed the valuable 2-6 win in a great atmosphere as normal great food and nice bar.......Palms Bar kept up the pressure with an emphatic victory in Los Cristianos taking the points from Summerlands Poolside Bar 0-8. First division leaders Target A travelled to Los Cristianos to face third place Chipeque Nomads and showed just how good they are giving the Nomads a darts exhibition with only Nomads captain Chelsea Rob winning a leg in the singles and a game with Richard to take the 901 doubles to save face Brian Target A hitting a 100 finish, Bubbles Target A added Great Afternoon Division One 1 Target A 2 Rood 3 Chipeque Nomads 4 Tenerife Potters 5 Target B 6 Young Guns 7 La Central 8 Legends A 9 Los Halcones 10 Beesnees 11 Cosy Wanderers

Rood Bar with the same 7-1 score line over Young guns keeping the pressure at the top of the league...Target B faced Legends A with an afternoon of good close matches with both Paul Target & Alan Legends hitting the maximum 180 Targets Bossman Rob “Very close game considering a couple of Target B players were not on form, best game of the day was Target Karl and Legends Tom , great scoring with Karl hitting the double when it counted taking the game 2-1 and did he celebrate, letting poor young Tom know who won.” Ricardo La Central: “Nice and lovely place and guys. Beautiful ‘’Carne fiesta’’ and chips. Anyway LA central lost only 1 single and 1 double. Cheers for all Halcones lads and for the enjoying day thanks”. And so went another Sunday of fun, frivolity and competitive darts in the South of Tenerife in the Wild bull coast FM darts league why not join the fun at a place near you as this next Sunday at 4pm sees another full fixture of league games ..See ya there.

It is certain to be only a temporary reduction in the length of the calendar but the 12-month postponement of the inaugural grand prix in New Jersey, and ongoing failure to confirm an alternative venue, means the season appears all-but certain to be made up of only 19 races for 2013 While that doesn’t change the duration of the campaign, which again starts in mid-March in Melbourne and finishes in late November in Brazil, it does create two long three-week gaps between the Canadian and British, and then German and Hungarian, rounds during the traditionally hectic middle segment of the season.

Calendar tweaks:

The remaining 19 races largely follow in the same order as in 2012, there are one or two alterations. The disappearance of Valencia’s European GP means that for only the fifth time in its long history the British GP loses its traditional July slot and is pushed forward to the last weekend in June. The following round in Germany has in turn been moved forward by two weeks, creating a back-to-back with Silverstone. In August and what used to be a fiveweek break in 2012 has been cut back to four, with the Spa event on August 25 no longer on consecutive weekends with Monza. The other noteworthy change sees Japan and Korea swap places, with the Korea now first up on October 6.

No more ‘ugly’ noses:

Boxer’s noses, stepped noses, platypus noses, their prominence on the vast majority of the 2012 cars caused more than a few complaints from those who like their F1 machines pretty as well as fast. The FIA were aware of the uproar and have acted to ensure the 2013 models

are better looking. While the regulation that requires the front part of a car’s nose to be no more than 55cm high remains in place, teams are now allowed to fit a laminate ‘modesty panel’ to smooth out the nose’s appearance.

New car numbers:

While there’s no change at Number One for the third consecutive season, interesting car number changes for 2013 to note are Lewis Hamilton, who takes ten for his first season at Mercedes with new team-mate Nico Rosberg at nine, and Sergio Perez, who will drive with number six on his MP4-28. Fernando Alonso will drive car number three.

No more unlimited DRS:

During its first two years of operation the F1 regulations for the use of the Drag Reduction System (DRS) contained several anomalies. Although designed as an overtaking aid, drivers could activate the moveable rear wing as and when they pleased during practice and qualifying sessions to gain pure lap-time advantage, whereas in races its use was limited to passing moves in one or two prescribed ‘zones’. With safety in mind, the governing body has stated that DRS can now only be used in the pre-defined ‘zones’ during every session of a race weekend. The main difference fans will notice, in the early races of the season at least, is that practice and qualifying lap times will be slower compared to 2012.

No more Mercedes-style Double DRS:

By the end of last season a number of teams were experimenting with variants

Late Transfer News

CD Marino have signed 20 year old English midfield player Sean Wilkins (front row right). Reports in the Canarian press describe him as a former Coventry City and Leicester City player but he started this season with Hinkley United in the Blue Square North. Wilkins doesn’t seem to have been playing since October, his former side Hinkley are away to my beloved Oxford City on Saturday. CD Tenerife have added central defensive cover in the shape of 28 year old Baltazar Rigo, a well traveled player last with Girona.

of the so-called Double DRS system first used by Mercedes on their W03. On their version, slots on the rear wing opened in tandem when the DRS was activated, channelling air through pipes towards the front of the car to stall the front wing for an additional speed boost. Such a system has now been banned for this season to stop any development. What hasn’t been outlawed is the type of ‘passive’ F-duct-like system developed, unused, by Lotus where air collected through ducts either side of the air box is channelled towards the rear wing for a speed boost even when DRS isn’t in use.

No more forcing the issue:

The phrase ‘force majeure’ came to controversial prominence during the course of the 2012 season after Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren in Spain, and Sebastian Vettel’s Red Bull in Abu Dhabi, ground to a halt at the end of Q3 when their respective teams came aware that their car was about to run out of fuel. Under the rules as they stood both teams could argue a case of force majeure - i.e. the car stopping for reasons beyond their control - but that phrase has now been deleted from the Sporting Regulations for 2013. It means that should a car not be able to return to the pits under its own steam in a qualifying session then, in addition to having the mandatory one litre of fuel still on board required for a sample, it also must have the same amount of fuel that “would have been consumed to drive back to the pits”, determined at the FIA, in order to escape the disqualification sanctions that Hamilton and Vettel suffered.

CD TENERIFE STILL SITTING PRETTy AFTER WINNING UGLy

Cristo Martin THErE was some grumbling in the ranks of the 8,035 crowd but an 80th minute goal salvaged a 1-0 home win over ourense to keep CD Tenerife two points clear at the top of the Segunda B. That’s six games undefeated with no goals conceded, an amazing defensive achievement spanning 579 minutes but it’s the lack of spark going forward that has drawn criticism from some quarters. It has to be said that the first half display was dire, sloppy, and with the few clear chances created ending in casual shooting. Ourense, with only one away win this season, had done their homework and marked Tenerife’s wide men Suso and Chechu tightly to cut off the supply up front. Bruno managed a header from a 10th minute corner but Pato dived to

make a good save. Aridane on a lean run put a soft header into the hands of the keeper but at least he was trying to make something out of the scraps that came his way. Ourense had a strong forward in Ivan Gonzalez and they tried to pick him out with raids down the flanks giving Moyano and Jesus Alvaro some worrying moments. A long range lob after 30 minutes sounded a warning, Sergio Aragoneses back peddled but was able to watch the ball just clear the bar. New midfield signing Fran Ochoa replaced Medina two minutes after the break and showed some good distribution and a willingness to push the pace. Coach Cervera made a bold move bringing on 19 year old Ayoze Perez for the frustrated Suso. The hot property from nearby San Andres has been banging in goals at youth and B team level and his pace immediately caused problems for Ourense. Fran Ochoa clipped the crossbar and

CB CANARIAS FALL AWAy FOR ZARAGOZA DEFEAT At the half way point things were looking good for CB Canarias holding a 39-45 lead in Zaragoza but they were overpowered in the final two quarters 21-10 and 21-12

to lose their ACB basketball match 81-67.

Jaakim Donaldson and Blagota Sekulic led the scoring with 12 points each and Levi Rost weighed in with 11 points but Zaragoza’s strong physical game

was too much for CB Canarias and they crumbled. Despite the setback the team are still clear of the relegation zone in 14th place and welcome Cajasol to La Laguna this Sunday at 11.30 am.

Moyano Ayoze came close to opening his senior account but the breakthrough wouldn’t come. Guillem Marti has been hammering on the door for a place in the starting line up and when he took over from Chechu with ten minutes left he wasted no time. Aridane did well to win the ball and feed it to Cristo Martin who crashed in a shot that Pato couldn’t hold and Guillem was on hand to bury the ball in the net for the fourth time this season.

The relief swept through the crowd and the players launched a late wave of attacks on the visitor’s goal. Well into injury time Guillem was brought crashing down on the edge of the penalty area, the ref hesitated, ignored the penalty claim, and blew the final whistle. So it’s off to 7th placed Caudal this Sunday (5pm) for more nerve stretching with Real Oviedo snapping at Tenerife’s heels for the top spot.

CD Marino Running On Empty

turned the pitch into a swamp and it was no surprise when Coruxo doubled their advantage early in the second half. Substitute Rafa Hernandez gave away a penalty and Miguel stepped up to make it 2-0. To their credit Marino didn’t completely fold but there are no prizes for dogged resistance. This Sunday Marino Luanco are the visitors at 11 am. Last week Jorge Reveron, Noda, and Alozie left Marino and following the latest defeat Javi Marchena and Natael joined Granadilla and Adan looks certain to link up with Ibarra. Relegation is a near certainty but there are now wider concerns as to who will form the foundation for a re-build next season.

A flood of January transfer window arrivals has left the CD Marino squad unrecognizable from the promoted heroes that were eager to tackle Segunda B. Sadly as more local players are eased out there is no improvement from the bottom placed side. There were few straws to clutch at in the 2-0 defeat

at Coruxo, just more defensive mistakes and continued poor finishing in front of goal. There was nearly a home lead after 20 minutes as Miguel’s shot hit the post but five minutes later Pastoriza crossed from the left and set up Besada to score the opener. Alberto Noah should have equalized on the 40 minute mark but his shot lacked power and the keeper easily gathered the ball. It was a tough baptism for Ayoze Placeres on loan from CD Tenerife, the heavy

The Chelsea full-back has been forced to wait to reach that landmark, but could join an elite group of international performers at Wembley on Wednesday. A meeting with the fivetime World Champions has been set up as part of the celebrations to mark 150 years of the Football Association, and it would be fitting if the occasion were to see Cole become a centurion.

includes a commemorative running vest, full back up physio and water stations, a monitor chip during the race so you get a precise time, plus trophies for the first five in each category and cash prizes of up to 750 euros for the winner of the senior male and female category. As a guideline the record for the run stands at 1 hour 4 minutes and 11 seconds. Entries can be made via the website www.mediomaratonlasgalletas.com or at Pabellon de Los Cristianos. Start limbering up now for the fittest Sunday morning of the year.

The 32-year-old will be joined in Roy Hodgson’s squad by Blues team-mate Frank Lampard, a man deemed surplus to requirements at club level but one who is considered to be good enough to represent his country. Lampard will be looking to earn his 94th cap against Brazil while, at the other end of the scale, Jack Butland and Leon Osman will be looking to avoid the tag of one-cap wonders. Butland is one of only two keepers included by Hodgson, with 10 midfielders making the cut. Everton’s Osman forms part of that group, while Arsenal’s

Jack Wilshere will be hoping to add to his six caps following a frustrating time with injury. Up front, Liverpool new boy Daniel Sturridge is called upon after enjoying a productive opening to his time at Anfield.

Squad:

GOALKEEPERS: Hart, Butland DEFENDERS: Baines, Cahill, Cole, Jagielka, Johnson, Lescott, Smalling, Walker MIDFIELDERS: Carrick, Cleverley, Gerrard, Lampard, Lennon, Milner, Osman, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Walcott, Wilshere FORWARDS: Defoe, Rooney, Sturridge, Welbeck
