Absolutely shocked at what has happened at this year’s carnival queen election. Although what exactly was anyone thinking allowing any kind of incendiary device anywhere near those highly flammable costumes is beyond me.

Did the dreadful fire in Brazil not teach anyone anything? I am sure you join me in sending prayers to Saida Maria Prieto and her family at this terrible time.

I have followed her programmes, and her recipes over the years, her books became my bibles and they are still often pulled out and used, whenever I have the time. I understand that she has been around since Noah was a lad, but come on; she is part of the world that should not be allowed to disappear. It’s a bit like your hairdresser going on holiday when you need them, shouldn’t be allowed! I haven’t got a tablet; I only just manage a mobile phone,

so I will continue to consult the oracle in the old fashioned way, on paper. Read all about Delia’s career on pages 28-29 Any budding thespians out there should take note. Soraya Rodriguez was elected on Wednesday night in a spectacular ceremony as Carnival Queen of Santa Cruz de Tenerife 2013, but the event nearly ended in tragedy.

The event was staged at the International Exhibition and Conference Centre of Tenerife in front of a huge 70 metre long screen projecting the most characteristic images of Tenerife carnival Miss Rodriguez won wearing a stunning, elegant outfit, entitled “Volare” (I will fly), designed with white and gold feathers, complete with matching feather headdress that literally shone as it contrasted with the colourful stage. Her skill on stage and the splendid dress designed by Creative Saliarca representing the Meridian Mall, fulfilled her dream of becoming Carnival Queen of Tenerife.

Miss Rodriguez beat 13 other candidates, who paraded in dresses that in most cases exceeded five meters in height and weighed around 80 kilos. It was originally planned that the finale would feature all of the 14 candidates; however there was a near tragedy at the election.

Saida Maria Prieto, placed seventh place with her costume entitled fantasy “Isis, queen of the gods’ was representing Diario de Avisos, her elaborate dress caught fire when a confetti cannon on the dress of fellow contestant, Magnolia Cruz, representing Radio Club Tenerife, exploded and burned the back of her costume. This resulted in Miss Prieto being trapped in flames which also set alight a curtain attached to the back of the stage of the Conference Centre.

The incident took place as the competition was beamed via satellite across Spain.

Miss Prieto was rushed to Universitario de Canarias Hospital where she needed an emergency operation for serious burns.

Subsequent reports from the hospital suggest that her injuries were even worse than at first thought, and that she has suffered burns to 50% on her body. She has since been transferred to the specialist burns unit of the Hospital Virgen del Rocío in Seville. A police escort travelled with the ambulance convey.

Two designers of Miss Prieto’s costume, on hand for final adjustments, also suffered 1st degree burns. There is some degree of outcry over the use, and authorization for use, of flares and the like in such proximity to the vast quantities of inflammable fabric and materials routinely used in the creations of these gowns. There is also some criticism that the organizers decided to continue with the gala given the severity of Sra Prieto’s injuries. Following the accident the city of Santa Cruz cancelled all carnival activity scheduled for Thursday.

Miss Prieto’s family requested that no reports were released about her condition without their express permission.

The Los Cristianos community was shocked and angry to discover that the 28 year old Bulgarian, Deyan Deyanov has been flown back to Tenerife to stand trial for the brutal murder of Jennifer MillsWestley in a Chinese discount store at the Valdes Centre on 13 May 2011. Even more surprising is the news that the accused now denies committing the frenzied beheading and will contest the charges.

Following his arrest he was detained in Tenerife 2 prison and later transferred to Seville psychiatric prison where intense examinations declared him to be an acute paranoid schizophrenic. It seemed unthinkable at that point that he would be able to play any part in a future trial but he was flown in from Seville with his appointed lawyer on Thursday 31 January. ness and drug abuse and the court will be presented with video evidence and written testimonies from some of the 50 customers and staff in the shop on that fateful day. Although the renewed spotlight on the case will evoke painful memories it should offer some closure for the family of Jennifer Mills-Westley.

Missing Woman Found

Last week we covered the story of missing 40-year-old mother of two, Ana Isabel González Pérez.

Police have reported that a body spotted under the old bridge in the La Verdellada area of La Laguna by a local resident, is that of Ana Isabel, although there has been no official announcement.

The recovery of the body was a long and complex operation. Initial reports suggest that the injuries to the body point to her falling from the bridge.

It seems that Ana Isabel died shortly after she disappeared.

arona council are launching a free mobile app which will give residents and tourists all the information they might need about the municipality direct to their mobile phones. Arona Mayor Francisco José Niño and Councillor for Tourism Evelin Santos, announced the move at the International Tourism Fair in Madrid, FITUR 2013. Initially the new app will be available in Spanish, English and German with plans for other languages, Russian and Chinese will come later. Designed for both Apple and Android tablets and smartphone, users will have access to practical information and a multimedia gallery with pictures and videos about the attractions in Arona.

Canarian government president, Paulino rivero, has arranged a meeting in Madrid with the minister for development, Ana Pastor, on the 13th. The aim is to guarantee the 50% discount on air and sea travel for Canarian residents, and make it clear that the airlines operating flights between the mainland and the Canaries must moderate their ticket prices. Rivero said that this meeting should clarify any uncertainty and guarantee the discount, adding that connectivity is a key piece in the development of tourism. over five months have now passed since the forest fires in La Gomera, which damaged the National Park of Garajonay and destroyed homes and other property, mostly in the municipality of Valle Gran Rey. Those affected now have to make claims without government support. The promised aid from the Canarian government still hasn’t arrived, nor have the damages for responsibility. The Canarian government decided to lower the alert level for forest fires, just before a heat wave struck, and they haven’t even begun to process the claims.

The replica of the 18th century galleon of the Constitution, also known as Andalusia, or more popularly as La Pepa, arrived in Santa Cruz on Monday for a positioning stop before leaving for the Caribbean. The galleon stayed at the port for three days before setting off again.

The number of unemployed people in the Canaries increased by 4,602 people in January 2013 when compared to the previous month of December (2012), this represents an increase of 1.60%, bringing the total number of unemployed people in Canary Islands to 289,517, according to figures provided by the Ministry of Employment. Unemployment rose in the whole of Spain last month by 2.72%. Year on year, there are 15,534 more unemployed than January 2012 indicating a rise of 5.29% which is one of the lowest figures in Spanish communities. Of the 289,517 registered unemployed in the Canaries, 144,510 are men and 145,007 women, with 22,021 of these aged under 25.

Gynaecological departments within the Canarian health service in Tenerife are saturated, to the point where a first visit to a specialist by a patient referred by a family doctor can mean a wait of up to two years, so say various doctors in all parts of the island. At El Mojón, the first available appointments are for the beginning of 2015. Doctors say the reason is there are too many patients, but that for urgent cases, the problem isn’t so great, as the long wait is for the specialist Centres, not the hospitals.

Metropolitano de Tenerife, the company which runs the tram service in Santa Cruz, called a meeting on Monday to try to avoid the planned strike. They proposed a meeting with the company president, who is the deputy Cabildo president, Carlos Alonso, in exchange for calling off or suspending the strike due to begin today (Friday).

All their proposals were rejected. Proceedings have begun against eight maintenance workers for failing to provide minimum services. This could be the fourth tram strike to affect the Carnaval.

Surviving on the rock

HaVING recently moved to a lovely villa in Palm mar, we haven’t got British TV at the moment and of all the free Spanish channels, we seem to watch “Discovery Max” and in particular, Bear Grylls.

For the uninitiated, Edward Michael “Bear” Grylls is a military trained adventurer and survival expert and in his TV series “Ultimate Survival”, Grylls and his camera crew are dropped into inhospitable environments all over the world and he is left to fend for himself, as well as get out. This usually involves him eating some pretty gross things that he finds living there naturally, examples include whole raw frog, raw scorpions and camel spiders, rotting antelope carcass and squeezing lifesaving water from elephant dung!-still enjoying breakfast?

Anyway it got me thinking..... For a bit of fun, imagine for a moment that the Canaries were uninhabited, how would someone like Bear survive.... and what would he eat?

1: Water His first problem would be dehydration, there are no rivers in Tenerife, drinking sea water is suicide, so how to find drinking water in this desert climate?

There are several ways; Find an area with a lot of foliage like the forest, dig a hole until the soil begins to feel damp, continue then as your hole fills up with water, drink using your hands or soak it up with a t-shirt. At dawn, there could be dew, find a grassy area, tie a t -shirt around your leg and simply walk through the grass as the dew collects in your t-shirt.

Tenerife has prickly pears growing wild which contain a lot of moisture when cut, however if you cut open a cactus and the liquid is milky, it’s poisonous.

2: The Ocean The seas and beaches around the Canaries teem with life; here are a few things to keep you from starving!

Shellfish such as wild mussels and

cockles should be easy to find and if it’s absolutely necessary, they can be eaten raw although food poisoning with little or no water supply could be the death of you. Small raw crabs and shrimp could give you lots of vital protein.

Fish can be very hard to catch without nets or a rod but a sharpened stick could get you an octopus!

Sea slugs, sea cucumbers and sea urchins are all edible, raw and cooked (considered a delicacy in some countries) and are just lying around waiting for you to pick ‘em up!

All seaweed is edible although some is delicious and nutritious and some taste like they look!!

3: Flora So let’s pretend there are no farms, vineyards or greengrocers, what plants could a survivalist find to eat growing wild?

Pine nuts from Forest Pine trees, wild almonds, fruit from Canarian palms (similar to dates), prickly pears from cacti, all these are endemic and edible and even the famous dragon trees have a sweet red sap that was once harvested though it’s now a protected species.

4: Funghi Several edible mushrooms and toadstools grow here, especially in the northern woods including the Boletus and Jews ear, a delicacy in Chinese cooking; however there are also many

poisonous varieties including the so called fairy tale toadstool, the Fly Agaric with its distinctive red cap with White spots.

5: Hunting It takes an extraordinary amount of skill to hunt wild animals (especially without a gun!) but here’s the best available- if you can catch them.

There is a hunting season (shotgun, dog and ferret) from 1st Sunday in August to 2nd Sunday in December, so a survivor could have go at killing partridge, wild pigeon, dove, quail, wild rabbit or even the huge wild sheep known as Mouflon!!

6: Insects With the fruits, seafood and mushrooms pretty much lying there for the taking, you probably wouldn’t need to resort to bug munching but if you really had to..

Most insect larvae found under rocks and in rotting trees provide a great source of protein.

Crickets (apparently pregnant are the best!) termites and ants are all edible and if you’re REALLY desperate even cockroaches can be food (just avoid household ones-they came from the sewer, try it’s country cousin!!)

Well I hope I’ve not ruined too many breakfasts-just think if the recession gets any worse there’s a free buffet right outside your door!!

Team Sky To Train In Tenerife

Cyclists from Team Sky will train for its classics campaign in Tenerife and then onto Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico in early March. Geraint Thomas confirmed his plans for Milan-San Remo, the Ronde van Vlaanderen, and ParisRoubaix on Sunday at the Tour of Qatar.

“There’s a bit of that risk,” said Thomas. “It’s worth giving it a good go; I don’t see why it shouldn’t work. It might be a couple of percentages either way. Maybe in April it might be totally different or it might go really well.”

Thomas, together with team mates Edvald Boasson Hagen, Bernhard Eisel and others will travel to the team’s high-altitude base in Tenerife. It is the same location, at 2,165 meters,

that Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome and the GC team used ahead of winning the 2012 Tour de France.

The classics squad will race the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne semi-classics at the end of February, return home for a week and then leave for Tenerife. They will train on the island for around two weeks or until San Remo on March 17. The decision means that the team will deviate from the standard classics route via the Paris-Nice or TirrenoAdriatico stage races. However, it allows Sky to tailor its riders’ training instead of going along with the race rhythm.

Sky performance trainer Tim Kerrison is behind the riders’ programs. If it works, as it did with the Tour, he will be hailed as a training guru. If it fails, he and the riders may be the joke of the peloton.

Dog Abuse Arrest

A team of Guardia Civil police from Playa de las Americas have arrested a man from Arona, as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of animal abuse; He was charged with throwing live dogs into the Biceche Baranco.

The arrest was a result of investigations initiated following a complaint lodged by an ecologist group - the NGO ADDANCA – stating that they had found a dozen bodies of dogs in the ravine, also known as the Gorge of the King, in the municipality of Arona.

The police team from Seprona, The Department of Nature Conservation, found a dozen corpses of dogs, particularly Canaries Podencos, at the bottom of the ravine in an advanced state of decomposition.

Agents inspected the dogs and thanks to a microchip reader, were able to locate the person who appeared to be registered as an owner of two of the dogs.

Once found, he was arrested and charged with animal abuse.

During a subsequent hearing, he acknowledged that he had thrown two of the dogs into the ravine whilst they were still alive.

The Civil Guard are continuing the investigation as there may be more people involved in the case.

“The Tenerife approach worked for the Tour so we’re going to try and do it for the classics. It won’t be worse than doing Paris-Nice and Tirreno, and we hope it will be better,” sports director, Ser-

vais Knaven said.

The hotel sits on top of a volcano, the Pico de Teide, in a national park. Long, barren mountain roads lead to the top, but the riders can easily train at altitude. “They’ll look

for climbs that are similar to the Flemish climbs. It’s the best preparation you can get I think. It’s something new,” Knaven said. “They can train more specifically; that’s the idea behind it.”

Consulate Open Day Success

The British Consulate and its partners present the most up to date information on the issues that matter most to British residents.

The “Open Day” events held on 30th and 31st January in Lanzarote and Tenerife were organised as part of a rolling programme to make Brits aware of their rights and obligations as residents in Spain.

British Consul General for the Southern European Network region of Consulates, Dave Thomas, was pleased to be present to open the events on each island. British Consul to the Canaries, Steve Jones, took the opportunity to explain how the Consulate can assist residents that find themselves in distressing circumstances and reiterated the Consulate’s role within the British community.

Department of Health representatives based in Madrid, Alexis Aguilera and Hannah Galloway, provided vital information regarding recent Spanish healthcare reform and stressed the obligations of residents to always update both UK and Spanish authorities when their circumstances change.

They also offered basic pension and benefit information on behalf of the Department for Work and Pensions.

Mr. Jones said, “The community outreach events are an excellent way of ensuring our British residents get the right information from the right source. We continue to work closely with our local partners and authorities who have the knowledge and are able to deliver directly to British residents the most up to date information” The panel of guest speakers in Los Cristianos included representatives from Tenerife South Citizen’s Information Office, legal firm De Cotta McKenna & Santafe and She Europe, while in Puerto del Carmen, presentations were given by the Mayor of Tías and the current Notary Public for Tías and Playa Blanca.

Alexis Aguilera said, “This was a great opportunity for us to reiterate important messages to

the British community in the Canaries. In particular, registering correctly for healthcare and as soon as possible in order to avoid any delays in a medical emergency.”

Almost 42,000 British residents are registered with local authorities across the Canary Islands, however the Consulate estimate that figure to

be closer to 80,000 with almost 50% of Brits not registering with their local town hall or foreigner’s office.

Tenerife Family Church

EVEryoNE connected with the newly named ‘Tenerife Family Church’ were pleased to report that a congregation of approximately 60 people made their way to their inaugural service in the Tenerife Best Hotel in Playa de las americas on Sunday 3rd February.

Holidaymakers and residents joined together in celebration of this new church, which is easily accessed by all, as it is on the ground floor, near to the bus route and amidst

hotels, shops and the beach ‘Tenerife Family Church,’ encompasses three venues under the wing of Pastor Bill Jeffrey and his wife Pastor Roz, contact number 609 565 528.

Pastor Bill mentioned all the wonderful work that is done in the south of the island by the church and how many people’s lives have changed since attending church. He is now hoping to spread God’s word in the Playa de las Americas area. The community is cared for by the church from small children to people in the latter stages of life and special help is given to

people with addiction problems. The homeless are supported from staff going out from the Living Room in the Veronicas area of Playa de las Americas above Burger King.

It was an uplifting service with trained staff on call to look after children, so that all the whole family were catered for during the worship session.

Service times are as follows: 10am at Costa Silencio in Coral Mar Square in the lower level, 11am at the Best Hotel, Calle Antonio Domingo 6, Playa de las Americas and 6pm at the Living Room in Las Veronicas Playa de Las Americas.

“llano de Abajo” Farmer´s Market

FroM Saturday 9th February the “Llano de abajo” farmer´s market in Santiago del Teide, will be open to the public from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

The market offers a huge opportunity for the farmers to sell their own natural and fresh products. The local Townhall wants to promote this market to give farmers the chance to develop their business.

The market will have more than 15 stalls offering local cheese, vegetables, fruit, cakes and traditional Canarian crafts for sale.

The market is located in the Avenida de la Iglesia nº 2 Santiago del Teide.

French Tourists On The Up In Tenerife

adeje Easter Passion Play

Adeje’s Easter Passion play is famed worldwide, attended by tens of thousands spectators, a lot of them tourists in the area. It is televised live internationally; this year’s coverage will be provided by TVE.

The number of French tourists visiting Tenerife has increased by around 50% over the last three years, thanks to tourism promotion. The statement was issued by Minister of tourism of Tenerife Cabildo, Carlos Alonso, at a Congress of 350 French travel agent’s in the South of the island.

“In 2012, we have managed to retain an important part of the increase of the Gallic tourism and prospects for the coming year are good.” said Alonso.

described the Congress as a key for the French tourist industry because travel agents will get to know first-hand the island and what it can offer. “We want to emphasize that the Tenerife experience is unique, consolidate the French market and amplify the image of the island,” said Alonso. He added that 150,000 French tourists visit Tenerife each year, figures that are still well below the 1.6 million Britons or 800,000 Germans who come.

Carlos Alonso said that at the moment the main competitors of Tenerife are based in the Mediterranean; Tunisia, Egypt, and the French Caribbean.

The insular tourism adviser showed congress attendees a promotional video of Tenerife in which he explained some of the most attractive parts of Tenerife that you can visit.

“We need to improve the image the French have of Tenerife”, explained Alonso.

Culture Councillor Nayra Medina Bethecourt said that because of such coverage even those who couldn’t come to watch in person could still watch the play on television.

This year’s preparations are now well underway;

each year some 300 “actors” take part in the Passion play, the vast majority of them residents in the municipality. This year will be no different, of course, and if anyone would like to be more than a spectator, but would actually like to

take part in the enactment itself, you can sign up to do so now in the Cultural Centre in Adeje.

There will be a showing of the video of last year’s Passion play in the Cultural Centre at 7pm on 22 February: entry is free.

IBERIA Strikes Announced

It is with heavy hearts that we will be sadly closing the Costa del Silencio charity shop at the end of March. An increase of charity shops in the area has meant that economically the shop is no longer viable.

This was our first shop and we are very sad to see it close, but we feel we have no choice, as we have to now concentrate our efforts on our remaining two shops which are of course situated in the busier tourist areas.

As a result, EVERYTHING MUST GO, and we will be holding a Buy One Get One Free sale from this weekend. In fact, come and see us, as no reasonable offers will be refused.

We thank Julie and all the volunteers for all their hard work, and we hope to see them in the Los Cristianos (Calle Reveron near the harbour play park) or San Eugenio (opposite Hotel La Nina, near Amandas bar) shops.

Unions representing Iberia ground staff and cabin crew have announced fifteen days of strikes starting on the 18th February 2013, after failing to reach an agreement with the company even with mediation help from ‘SIMA’.

The first strikes are scheduled between the 18th and 22nd February 2013, the following strikes are called for between 4th and 8th of March 2013 and finally from 18th to 22nd March 2013.

According to the unions representing the work-

ers, it is one of the largest strikes to affect Iberia and claim that it will cause some airports such as Madrid-Barajas to be ‘uncontrollable’ during the action.

The action is in protest of the company’s decision to cut its staff by 23% (around 4,500 people).

There’s still time to submit your work for the 16th annual Santiago del Teide Almond Blossom photographic competition. There are no restrictions on where you are from as long as you are over 18-years-old and not a professional photographer. Your photograph must be of Almond Blossom and been taken anywhere in Santiago del Teide. February 25, at 12:00pm, is the deadline for submission and each contestant may submit up to two photos.

Entries must be given an appropriate title, record the place where the photo was taken and be properly framed behind glass; colour or black and white, with a minimum size of 40 cm x 30 cm. Contestants must submit a digital JPG copy of the photo with a resolution of not less than four megapixels or the negative if using traditional film. You should attach a separate sealed envelope containing the author’s details (name, age, DNI, NIE, or passport number, nationality, address, contact telephone number and an email address.)

The outside of the envelope should also record the title of the work. The winners will be announced on March 15 and cash prizes of 300, 200 and 150 euros awarded for 1st 2nd and 3rd places. Hannah Williams & The Tastemakers

Hannah Williams & The Tastemakers will be in the Teatro Leal, in La Laguna where they will be performing a concert on the 21st February from 22:00 hours. The group has become one of the most famous groups currently performing in England clubs. They have appeared in the legendary 100Club and in the Band On The Wall in Manchester with Craig Charles. Making A Will

If you own a property in Spain, we would recommend that you have a Spanish Will. once you provide the information which relates to your own situation, a document can then be drawn up. you then need to go to the Notary, where you will sign the document, and receive a copy.

If you own a property and do not have a will, your heirs could find it a very long and tedious journey to claim what is rightfully theirs. In a minority of cases, the property has actually been passed on to the regional offices.

For this to be a legal document and has to be signed at the Notary, so it needs a bit of thought as to what exactly its contents are going to be, if you want to amend the document at a later date, it means a second journey to the notary, and an additional charge!

Another important point to note regarding this procedure is that a couple each need to make an independent will, not a joint document.

All adults should make a will irrespective of how large or small their assets are.

There are three different types of will; Open, Closed and a Holographic will.

An Open Will is the normal option, the most suitable for most people. This option does not require the services of a

lawyer, but it MUST be prepared by a Notary who is responsible for ensuring that it is properly and legally drawn up.

Its contents must be made known to the Notary and be signed by three witnesses – these can be of any nationality. You will receive a copy from the Notary a copy will be sent to the relevant authority.

A Closed Will, of which the contents remain secret, MUST be drawn up by a Spanish lawyer to ensure that it complies with Spanish Law. The Notary will seal the envelope and sign it and then files it and records it the same as an Open Will.

As with an Open Will, the Notary keeps a copy and sends a copy to the relevant authority A Holographic Will is a document made orally or in your own handwriting. If written it must be clearly drafted to make sure your requests are respected. Upon

death the Will has to be authenticated before a judge which could delay finalisation.

This is only a brief outline of options and it would be far better to seek professional advice from someone who can take you through the whole procedure and guide you in the input of the material in the document. They will be able to accompany you to the Notary etc. and avoiding any language barrier issues.

BELIEVE it or not, Hello Kitty is 40 years old. as part of celebrations for the anniversary, a new line of products will be released featuring a new style of Hello Kitty designed

by Spanish graphic designer Javier Mariscal.

Javier Mariscal, best known for the creation of Cobi, the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games mascot, is using Hello Kitty as a canvas for his unique designs. At first it looks like a mouth has been drawn on Hello Kitty’s usually expressionless face, but it’s actually not meant to be a mouth; this is just a part of Mariscal’s design.

Mariscal drew inspiration from the following words to create his Hello Kitties: art, Mariscal, Spain, femininity, world. Hello Kitty has been a well-loved character for many generations of people, Mariscal also wanted to make sure that the new designs would also appeal to all generations.

Mariscal’s Hello Kitty will be printed on stationery, clothing and other goods, and will be in shops in time for summer 2013, although an actual release date has not been released. Currently, the Mariscal Hello Kitty goods are only for sale in Japan, but talks about international sales are ongoing.

Mainland News In Brief An eighteen year old from Valencia has launched the first low cost online florist. The owner of the company, called flores nuevas dot com, Javier Medina, says that bouquets, baskets and other arrangements can be supplied, and that deliveries are always made within twenty four hours, or on the day chosen by the customer.

The optimistic and dynamic attitude of a group of men and women, who have survived cancer, is the message in the photographic exhibition Con Otra Mirada, on display at the Xanit International Hospital in Benalmadena until the 18th. This exhibition, which was organized with the Spanish association against cancer, AECC, was designed to coincide with this year’s World Day Against Cancer. The association has installed information points throughout the province of Malaga, with the message; Detecting in time can save lives.

Monday’s meeting between the strike committee and the directors of Seville’s rubbish collection company over the indefinite strike, resulted in the strike committee making various proposals, to reduce the impact of salary cuts and the extended working week. The directors announced that the Andalusian Supreme Justice Tribunal has ordered an increase in minimum services to 50%. Five thousand tons of rubbish has now accumulated on the streets.

A team of fifteen architectural students of eight nationalities, from the London Architectural Association, will study the Terra Mítica theme park in Benidorm, with the aim of rethinking the future of this venue, and offering ideas to reinvent it as complementary to Benidorm’s touristic offer. The students, accompanied by professor and architect Naiara Vegara, have visited the park, and for the next few weeks, will use an office at the council where they can organise the information gathered, and complete the investigation.

The second European Science, Technology and Innovation Forum, Transfiere, takes place at the Malaga Fairs and Congress Centre on the 13th and 14th of February, and will create a unique space in Spain to develop cooperation in the scientific and business fields. This edition aims to place Spanish investigation in the European sphere, and turn Malaga into the epicentre of Spanish innovation. 450-500 universities are expected to attend this event, which is seen as a great opportunity for Malaga.

The directors and unions of the Banco de Valencia have reached an agreement for an employment regulation which will finally affect seven hundred and ninety five of the one thousand six hundred and thirteen employees, 49%. Two hundred and thirty over the age of fifty three, will take early retirement. Finally, the number of staff to be dismissed has been reduced, and the compensation payments agreed for those who leave, have been increased. Staff aged fifty to fifty three will only leave on a voluntary basis.

The new electronic prescription system is now being introduced in Murcia, following a test period. The councilor for health and social politics, María Ángeles Palacios announced the system on Tuesday, and said that this has many advantages for patients, doctors and pharmacists. Electronic prescriptions allow the chronically ill to collect their medicines from a pharmacy, avoiding repeat visits to the doctor for prescriptions. Also, there will be no need to visit the family doctor to obtain medicines prescribed by specialists.

The National Police have dismantled two illegal gambling rooms, located in the Parque Mijas Shopping Centre, where twenty six people were playing, and The Golden Time pub in Estepona where twenty two were playing. Investigations aimed at eradicating illegal gambling, led to the discovery of these two establishments, where poker was being played both at tables and online. The police confiscated three thousand nine hundred and seventy five euros in cash, materials associated with gaming, and audiovisual equipment.

Age Concern Volunteer Honoured Angela Keay’s New Year got off to a surprising start when she learnt that she has been awarded an MBE for services to the British community in Spain in the New Year’s Honours List.

Now Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Spain, Giles Paxman, has taken the opportunity of a visit to Alicante to meet and congratulate her in person.

Angela, who lives in Torrevieja in the Province of Alicante, has made a remarkable contribution to the development of the charity Age Concern which provides support to British expatriates across Spain.

She helped to set up Age Concern Costa Blanca Sur in 1997, as its Secretary and later President. She then became Secretary and President of Age Concern España.

She is now Secretary to Age Concern España’s national INFOLINE and Casework service organisation, known as ACASA, as well as being one of its Caseworker volunteers.

Giles Paxman said “I am de-

lighted to have met Angela and I congratulate her on a well-deserved MBE. The organisation ACASA is an excellent example of the many English-speaking associations that support our most vulnerable residents and tourists, and I’m pleased that the hard work that has gone into setting it up has been recognised.

“The work that our consular staff in Spain carry out in supporting British nationals is

greatly helped by volunteers like Angela, who give up their time and energy to help others.”

ACASA is a partnership between Age Concern España, the British Embassy and Age UK, and is a national charity launched in 2011. World’s Oldest Crabs Found In Spain

The fossilized remains of the world’s oldest recorded spider crabs have been found by scientists in the Koskobilo quarry in northern Spain. The crabs are part of a larger discovery in which the remains of eight new species of crustaceans were discovered.

The fossils of the spider crabs, named Cretamaja granulata and Koskobilius postangustus, were found alongside other decapod crustacean species which include crabs, shrimp, and lobsters.

An article by Live Science writes that the newly discovered crabs are far older than the former record holder. Study author Adiël Klompmaker, a postdoctoral researcher with the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida remarked on the age difference: “The previous oldest one was from France and is some millions of years younger. So this discovery in Spain in quite impressive and pushes back the origin of spider crabs as known from fossils.”

According to research into the evolution of crustaceans such as the ones discovered in Spain may bring insight into modern day species. Ocean acidification and

coral bleaching can cause reef decline.

Scientists hope to study what affects this change has on animal life.

Klompmaker speculated on the connection between the reef and the animal life it supported: “The reef in Spain died soon after many decapods were still around. Something must have happened in the environment that caused reefs in

the area to vanish, probably many of the decapods that were living in these reefs.

Not many decapods are known from the time after the reefs disappeared in the area.”

Adiël Klompmaker will expand on his team’s findings, including the world’s oldest spider crabs, in an upcoming issue of the journal Cretaceous Research.

Penelope Wind Farm Power record expecting Again

aLTHoUGH there has been no official announcement it is believed that Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem are expecting their second child. a source close to the couple is quoted as saying the Volver actress is around three months pregnant.

The new arrival would be a brother or sister for the Oscar winning couple’s first child, Leo,

who was born in January 2011.

Ms Cruz, 38, and Mr Bardem, 43, will star together in Ridley Scott’s forthcoming film The Counselor, due for release in November of this year.

Ms Cruz won a best supporting actress Oscar for her role in Woody Allen’s 2008 comedy Vicky Cristina Barcelona, while Mr Bardem was named best supporting actor in 2007 for his part in the drama No Country For Old Men.

rED Electrica de Espana, the Spanish Wind Energy association has announced that over the last three months, wind farms produced more electricity than any other power source in Spain for the first time ever.

The country delivered over six terawatt hours of electricity from wind farms during January, according to data from grid operator. “Since November 1, wind has

been the top technology in the electrical system. The last time any technology exceeded six terawatt-hours of monthly generation was in 2010, when it was combined-cycle gas turbines.”

The performance means wind energy exceeded output from both nuclear and coal-fired power stations and represents more than a quarter of Spain’s total power generation. Spain has been looking to boost its wind power capacity as part of the government’s efforts to cut carbon emissions.

The news came at the same time as German wind energy industry association BWE said it expects developers to add between 3GW and 3.5GW of capacity this year, surpassing the 2.4GW installed in 2012.

The surge in new capacity will be largely driven by new offshore wind farms coming online and will mean the country remains on track to meet its goal of generating around 40% of its electricity from renewables by 2020, up from about 25% currently.

Shakira & Pique – Baby’s First Picture

Singer-songwriter Shakira and her partner, Spanish footballer Gerrard Pique, have proudly introduced their baby boy to the world by tweeting the first picture of their first child.

Milan Pique Mebarak was born on January 22 in hospital in Barcelona. The colour picture shows Pique cradling his son and kissing him on his cheek with the message: “Meet our baby boy Milan”.

The singer also urged fans to donate £7 to Unicef, the children’s charity for whom she is an ambassador.

Two weeks ago the star and Pique invited fans to join an online baby shower in support of “the world’s most vulnerable babies”.

“To celebrate the arrival of our first child, we hope that, in his name, other less privileged children in the world can have their basic needs covered through gifts and donations,” the couple said in a statement. “Every expectant parent around the world shares all the same hopes and dreams for their children that we do. Duke of Palma Title Stripped Nissan To Build

Spanish authorities have asked King Juan Carlos’s son-in-law, heavily involved in a corruption scandal, to stop using the title Duke of Palma, claiming that he has disrespected the town’s name.

Inaki Urdangarin, who is married to the Duchess of Palma, the king’s youngest daughter Cristina, is currently being investigated for embezzlement and tax fraud, the first major public scandal to hit the king’s family. He has been ordered to post more than eight million euros in bail as part of the on-going corruption probe. A court in Palma, Mallorca, gave Urdangarin and his former business partner Diego Torres Perez just five days to make the payment.

Fuelling public anger over the case, the Spanish press published an email sent by Urdangarin to a palace official in which he signed off with a sexual play on words based on his Palma title -- untranslatable in English.

A spokesman for the authority, Julio

Martinez, said: “We are requesting that Mr Urdangarin stop using a title which is not actually his, but his wife’s”.

The action was prompted by “events of recent days... which have revealed poor behaviour and a lack of consideration for the name of our city”, Martinez said, though he declined to comment explicitly on the email. He said the conservative-dominated town council would approve the motion and the town hall has also agreed to rename “Dukes of Palma Avenue”, a central street in the town, to just “Avenue”, due to “the same indignation”.

Urdangarinis is due to appear in court in Palma on February 23 to be questioned for a second time by a judge investigating the corruption allegations.

He has denied any wrongdoing and, so far, has not been charged with a crime.

“We respect the presumption of innocence, it is not about that -- there have simply been some events that have outraged the citizens of Palma,” Martinez added.

Juan Carlos, widely respected in Spain for helping guide it to democracy in the 1970s, side-lined Urdangarin from the palace’s functions when the scandal first came to the public’s attention in 2011.

The scandal is affecting the Spanish royals’ popularity. Although the King is respected by most Spaniard’s, a recent poll showed that support for the monarchy had fallen to 54%, six down on this time last year.

Cars In Spain

The Nissan Motor Co Ltd is to start making a new car model at its Barcelona factory in north east Spain after striking a deal with unions on wage cuts, a spokeswoman said.

The agreement was finally reached after months of negotiations that nearly caused the Japanese manufacturer to cancel all their expansion plans in Spain. It will create

1,000 jobs and bring in 130 million euros ($178 million) of new investment, Spanish media reported.

The Spanish government has welcomed recent investments by car makers as a sign that reforms allowing employers to hire and fire workers more easily are making the recession-hit economy more competitive.

In January, Volkswagen also announced plans to increase car production in Spain.

rajoy At The Center Of Corruption Claims

rIoT police clashed with protesters in Madrid on Saturday as demonstrations broke out in several other Spanish cities following the prime minister’s televised denial that he had accepted under-the-table payments.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy had promised to disclose information about funds in all his personal bank accounts, denying recent Spanish media reports that he and members of his governing conservative Popular Party accepted or made under-the-table payments.

The scandal broke when the National Court reported that former party treasurer Luis Barcenas had amassed an unexplained 22 million Euros in Swiss bank accounts. Barcenas resigned in 2009 when his name first appeared in the court’s investigation into alleged irregular financing practices by the party. His lawyer has denied the Swiss

account money was illegally obtained or linked to the party.

Speaking at a special executive committee meeting on Saturday at his party’s Madrid headquarters, Rajoy declared “it is false” that he received or distributed undeclared money. “Next week, my statements of income and assets will be made available to all citizens,” he said, adding they would be published on the prime minister’s official website.

However by late Saturday it was obvious Rajoy’s pledge failed to defuse popular disquiet as riot police cordoned off several of Madrid’s main avenues to stop protesters from gathering in large groups.

Attorney General Eduardo Torres-Dulce said on Friday that there was sufficient cause to investigate allegations of irregular financing within Rajoy’s party. Leading newspaper El Pais published details of secret papers belonging to Luis Barcenas allegedly documenting

undeclared payments. The money was allegedly paid by businesses, some said to be linked to the construction industry, before the sector imploded in 2008. El Pais said nearly two-thirds of the alleged payments violated Spain’s party financing laws.

The lists published by the newspaper said the documents showed that as of 1997, Rajoy received about 25,000 Euros ($34,000) in “envelopes” each year Rajoy stated: “I have never received or handed out

‘black money’ in this party or anywhere else.”

Following the allegations, opposition parties demanded Rajoy break his silence of recent days, and some called for his resignation and a national elections.

Many of the payments occurred during Spain’s boom years of the late 1990s when the Popular Party was in power and the construction industry made the country one of the most successful economies in the European Union.

Bankia Bailout Fraud

a JUDGE has summoned Spanish Economy Minister Luis de Guindos as a witness to the investigation into alleged fraud involving bailout-out bank Bankia.

The National Court, Spain’s top criminal tribunal, summoned the minister to testify on February 18th. But as he is a government minister, Guindos has the option of answering questions in writing without going to the court. The minister has declared he had “not decided absolutely anything” regarding how he will testify. “I have no problem with introducing transparency and explaining things to all Spaniards,” he announced at a news conference following a weekly cabinet meeting.

The investigation centres around Bankia’s stock market listing, the forming of the lender from seven troubled savings banks in 2010 and the capital shortfall revealed by the bank after the state takeover in May 2012. The takeover resulted in Spain asking for up to 100 billion euros ($136 billion) in

Eurozone rescue funds for its banking sector.

The court opened an investigation in July 2012 into whether former Bankia president Rodrigo Rato and 32 other former board members were guilty of fraud, embezzlement, price manipulation and falsifying accounts following a lawsuit filed by the political party, UPyD. Rato, a former head of the International Monetary Fund who resigned from Bankia just before it was nationalised and bailed out for 23.5 billion euros, was questioned as part of the probe on December 20. He said Spanish authorities held responsibility for events at Bankia including the timing of its illfated stock listing.

Bank of Spain governor Luis Maria Linde is scheduled to testify as a witness on February 15, a day after his predecessor Miguel Angel Fernandez Ordonez is set to take the stand, the court said.

Investigating Judge Fernando Andreu has so far not brought charges against anyone and could still drop the case.

Police Officers Murder Trial Starts

DaLE Cregan fired an entire magazine of bullets at two women police officers after he had lured them to a house with a “spurious” burglary report, a court has heard. The 29-year-old appeared in court accused of killing PCs Nicola Hughes, 23, and Fiona Bone, 32, in a gun and grenade attack last year.

In his opening statement, prosecutor Nicholas Clarke QC said Cregan went on the run after gunning down former amateur boxer Mark Short at the Cotton Tree pub in Droylsden, Greater Manchester, in May. He later killed the man’s 46-year-old father.

On September 18, the court heard, Cregan called in a “spurious burglary” at an address in Hattersley, luring the two unarmed officers to investigate. The prosecution said

he lay in wait with a Glock firearm with a fully loaded extended magazine, which he fired repeatedly at the officers when they arrived. It is then claimed he threw a grenade at the officers. Both subsequently died from their injuries.

Cregan has denied four charges of murder, four of attempted murder and one of causing an explosion. He appears alongside nine alleged associates who deny a range of offences including murder, attempted

murder, causing an explosion, possessing a firearm and assisting an offender.

Jurors heard about the attack on Mr Short and were told it was “revenge” for lack of respect shown to the mother of a rival family called the Atkinsons. The jury was also told

by Mr Justice Tim Holroyde that the case will “probably be extensively reported by the media” and they should judge only what they hear in the courtroom.

The trial takes place amid one of the tightest security operations ever for a court case; more than 150 police officers surrounded Preston Crown Court. Armed officers have been positioned on rooftops and sniffer dogs have been used to check the surrounding areas.

The press area in the courtroom was full, with a further 50 reporters seated in a specially set up annex with audio and video links to court.

The parents of the two officers, along with PC Bone’s partner and sister, walked into court together.

Parents Paul and June Bone held hands, PC Bone’s partner Clare Curran walked in with the officer’s sister Vicky. PC Hughes’s parents are separated. Her father Bryn arrived with wife Natalie while PC Hughes’s mother Susan arrived alongside a police family liaison officer from Greater Manchester Police.

The trial continues.

Sixteen stories below Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan, workers are blasting through bedrock to create a massive new commuter rail concourse.

They have extracted enough debris to cover Central Park a foot deep.

“I look at it and I’m in wonder, I’m in awe,” said Michael Horodniceanu, president of capital construction for the state Metropolitan Transportation Authority. “I feel like when I went to Rome and entered St. Peter’s Basilica for the first time ... I looked at it and said, ‘Wow,

how did they do that?’”

The site and two other major projects are costing an estimated $15bn (£9.57bn).

Due to be completed in 2019; they will bring subway and commuter rail services to vast, under-served stretches of the far East and West sides of Manhattan.

The project will result in a 21st century, underground Grand Central Terminal mirroring the century-old building above.

But for now, the subterranean hub is a wet, humid construction site. The dark grey walls mark the dimensions of the future eight-floor concourse - about 70ft (21m) wide and 1,800ft (550m)

long.

When crews prepared to drill a giant new cavity under Second Avenue, they first had to freeze the ground to about minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 29 Celsius) so as not to destabilise the buildings above.

The tunnels are coated with a material once used to fireproof the space shuttle. It also incorporates enclosed air cooling plants, instead of ventilation grates that allow rainwater to pour in. When Superstorm Sandy hit New York last October, floodwaters washing over the East Side did not penetrate the subway construction sites.

The 36th race to the top of the Empire State Building in Manhattan has been won

by Canberra runner Mark Bourne; his first victory took 10 minutes, 12 seconds. “It is a great feeling to come out on top,” he said. “It was pretty hectic at the start. I was second, third, second and at the 60th floor I took the lead.”

Fellow Australian Suzy Walsham won the women’s division in 12:05 - her fourth win. “I’m so thrilled that I won,” she said, adding that in comparison to previous years she felt “surprisingly good” at the finish.

Australians also too both secondplace slots as well; Darren Wilson finishing in 10:45 and Brooke Logan finishing in 12:48.

The previous men’s champion, Thomas Dold of Germany, did not race for what would have been his eighth consecutive title. He said: “I have 364 days to think about” the next one.

About 700 people from around the world took part in the annual race, running up 86 flights of stairs in the skyscraper. The 1,576 steps start at the lobby and finish at the observation deck.

The run-up is organised by the New York Road Runners, which also puts on the annual New York City Marathon.

Irish P.M. Apologises To Magdalene Survivors

The Magdalene laundries started in the late 1700s as places to rehabilitate so-called “fallen” women.

Now Ireland’s prime minister has apologised to thousands of women sent to Catholic-run workhouses where they were subjected to a regime of hard work and prayer.

Women were forced into Magdalene laundries for crimes as minor as not paying for a train ticket, theft and vagrancy. A small number of the women were there for prostitution.

A committee - led by Martin McAleese, the husband of former Irish president Mary McAleese - was set up 18 months ago to investigate what role the Irish state played in the institutions between 1922 and 1996. It found that more than 2,100 women, more than a quarter of those who were held in the Magdalene laundries for whom records survived, had been sent directly by the state. Many of them died there.

The Irish government has always previously denied direct involvement in the system, which was run by four religious congregations: Sisters of Our Lady of Charity, The

and I’m really sorry that that never happened, and I regret that never happened.”

However, the Magdalene Survivors Together group dismissed the prime minister’s apology. “He is the Taoiseach of our country, he is the Taoiseach of the Irish people, and that is not a proper apology,” Maureen Sullivan said.

Survivors told the committee the atmosphere in the institutions as “cold, with a rigid and uncompromising regime of physical demanding work and prayer, with many instances of verbal censure, scolding’s or even humiliating put-downs”.

Government inspectors routinely carried out checks at the institutions and the state paid welfare and other payments to women in laundries.

However, the report also noted that none of the 118 women that spoke to the committee made any allegations of sexual abuse against those who ran the laundries and compared them favourably to the Industrial

School system in which physical punishment and abuse was “prevalent”.

“Some of the women the committee met stated clearly that the laundries were their only refuge in times of great personal difficulty,” the report said.

More than 10,000 women, aged from nine to 89, were sent to eight of the ten laundries from which records were available between 1992 and 1996.

Advocacy group Justice for Magdalenes (JFM) said it was aware of at least 988 women who were buried in laundry plots in cemeteries across Ireland, meaning they stayed in the institutions until death. The inquiry could confirm only 879.

Dr Katherine O’Donnell, director of the Women’s Study Centre at University College, Dublin, said: “The state sent girls and women into the Magdalene laundry system through courts and mother-and-baby homes.

“They never checked on those girls and women to see if in fact they ever left.”

Good Shepherds, The Sisters of Mercy and the Religious Sisters of Charity.

But as the report was published, Irish PM Enda Kenny said: “To those residents who went into the Magdalene laundries from a variety of ways, 26% from state involvement, I’m sorry for those people that they lived in that kind of environment.”

He said action should have been taken before to clear the names and reputations of the women: “That the stigma, that the branding together of the residents, all 10,000 needs to be removed and should have been removed long before this

Iron Out, Cat In

After 78 years, the iron is out of Monopoly and has been replaced by a cat. The brutal decision on the board game token cull was taken by fans voting in 120 countries. In the closing hours of the vote on Facebook the “token out” vote came down to a race between the iron, the wheelbarrow and the shoe. The iron lost out.

The incoming cat token, which even has an M on its collar, triumphed over a robot, a diamond ring, a helicopter and a guitar to take its place on Go. Cat lovers were possibly trying to restore the balance as there is already a Scottie dog token.

The online contest to change the tokens, was launched by toymaker Hasbro Inc, started from chatter on Facebook; Monopoly has more than 10 million fans.

It was intended to make the game relevant to fans today.

Monopoly’s tokens originated when the niece of game creator Charles Dar-

row suggested using charms from her charm bracelet for tokens.

The tokens have changed quite a lot since Parker Brothers bought the game from its original designer in 1935. The eight tokens were an iron, a race car, a Scottie dog, a shoe, a thimble, a top hat, a wheelbarrow and a battleship.

Most of the pieces were introduced with the first Parker Brothers version of the game in 1935. The Scottie dog and wheelbarrow were later added in the 1950s.

Jonathan Berkowitz, vice president for Hasbro gaming marketing, said: “We put five new tokens out for our fans to vote on and there were a lot of fans of the many different tokens, but I think there were a lot of cat lovers in the world that reached out and voted for the cat to be the new token for Monopoly. Tokens are always a key part of the Monopoly game ... and our fans are very passionate about their tokens, about which token they use while they play.”

Versions of Monopoly with the new token will come out later this year.

kate Back On Duty

THE Duchess of Cambridge is to meet women recovering from substance abuse at “The action on addiction” programme at Hope House, in London. The project offers a safe, secure and comfortable place for women to recover from substance dependence and receive support for other compulsive disorders.”

“Her Royal Highness will meet clients and staff at the 23-bed residential treatment centre.” St James’ Place announced. At the time of her visit on February 19, Kate will be approaching the half-way mark of her pregnancy.

Kate selected Action on Addiction as one of her first patronages, alongside East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, The Art Room and the National Portrait Gallery. She is also a volunteer in the Scout Association.

On Valentine’s Day last year Kate travelled to an Action on Addiction project to meet recovering alcoholics at a dry bar in Liverpool. It was one of her first solo engagements; Prince William was working in the Falkland Islands as a search and rescue pilot. Weeks earlier the Duchess had visited the headquarters on Action on Addiction on a private visit to gain an in depth understanding of the charity’s work.

The 12-24 week programme at Hope House is for women aged 18 or over who have undergone detoxification and first stage treatment. During the programme, clients take part in daily groups and workshops where they share experiences, as well as one-to-one counselling in private therapy rooms.

Kate’s last public engagement was to the National Portrait Gallery in January where, alongside Prince William, she attended the unveiling of her first official portrait.

Online Safety Pilot Scheme

The dangers of posting personal information online are being taught to pupils at a primary school in Shropshire as part of a pilot project to keep them safe from criminals. A high school in Cambridge have been taking part in the trial launched by the Information Commissioner’s Office.

The need to teach children early in life became even more evident after an expert at the London School of Economics estimated a million nine to 12-year-olds already use Facebook, even though they are meant to be 13 before becoming members.

Mark Neighbour has been leading the pilot project at St Bede’s School in Cambridge with year nine pupils. He said: “We want them to think about what type of information could be used by a third party ... Why do they need to know their

age for instance? Why do they need to know where they live? Why do they need to know where they shop? We want them to question themselves before they put pen to paper or finger to a keyboard because once the information is gone, once they hit return, it’s out there and anyone can get to it and use it.”

Many children are also unaware that what may be quickly posted on the internet can potentially still be seen by universities or employers checking up on candidates years later.

Melissa, 14, was one of the pupils who attended the lessons. “The internet is really scary and you should think twice before you start posting things. What you tweet, talk about on Facebook, pictures, things like that ... it’s out there forever.” Rebecca, who is 13, thinks all pupils would benefit from the classes. “It’s actually helped everyone understand what we need to be aware of using the internet and what people can do.”

The Information Commissioner,

Christopher Graham, said: “I think the danger is of jigsaw identification. You can put little bits of information out there and somebody can piece it all together. So the name of the game with the primary school kids is to explain to them how the online world works and how there are organisations who make money by getting a hold of your information and selling it on to someone else.”

Schools already warn children about online safety as part of the IT curriculum but this project goes into more detail about the importance of protecting personal data on the internet and in everyday life.

Between January and October 2012, 35 million pieces of personal information were illegally traded online - up from 19 million during the whole of 2011. As much as 90% of that trade was in the form of login and password details. It helps to explain why 24% of UK residents have been the victim of identity fraud.

If the pilot proves a success, it will be rolled out in schools nationwide.

Gascoigne Returns to Rehab

Alcoholic former England footballer Paul Gascoigne has been admitted to a treatment centre in the US after concerns were raised for his health. The ex-Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio and Newcastle United star has “willingly” gone to an unnamed centre, his management company announced.

Gazza, who has spoken about his alcoholism problems in the past and was sectioned five years ago under the Mental Health Act. He showed up at a charity appearance in Northampton last week where he appeared to be unwell and trembling, his agent Terry Baker said that the 45-year-old needed immediate help, suggesting Gascoigne’s life is “always in danger”.

A statement, released by GamePlan Solutions said the star had been touched by the support shown by fans and figures within football over the past few days. It said: “Alcoholic Paul Gascoigne has been experiencing a tough time of late. He has been asking for help and has willingly been admitted to a treatment centre in America. He has complex issues that are currently being dealt with by professionals. Paul has been extremely touched and overwhelmed by the generous offers of help and support over the past few days. He is motivated to fully understand and control his addiction problem under guidance.”

Twitter Hacking Around 250,000 Twitter users may have had their accounts compromised by computer hackers. The social networking site said usernames, email addresses and encrypted passwords may have been taken during an “extremely sophisticated” attack on its systems. One such attack was shut down moments after it was detected; the passwords of users who may have been affected had been reset.

Bob Lord, director of information security at Twitter, said there had been “a recent uptick in largescale security attacks aimed at US technology and media companies”, with the New York Times among those targeted. He said: “Our investigation has indicated the attackers may have had access to limited user information - usernames, email addresses, session tokens and encrypted/salted versions of passwords - for approximately 250,000 users. As a precautionary security measure, we have reset passwords and revoked session tokens for these accounts. This attack was not the work of amateurs and we do not believe it was an isolated incident. The attackers

were extremely sophisticated and we believe other companies and organisations have also been recently similarly attacked.”

Mr Lord said that although “only a very small percentage” of users were potentially affected, everyone who uses the site should ensure their password is secure. He said passwords should be at least 10 characters long, contain upper and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols, and be different to passwords used for other online accounts.

Ashkan Soltani, an independent privacy and security researcher said the hackers may have gained access through an employee’s home or work computer by exploiting vulnerabilities in Java, a widely-used computing language.

Such a move would give attackers “a toehold” in Twitter’s internal network, allowing them to track user information as it travelled across the company’s systems or break into specific areas, such as the authentication servers that process users’ passwords.

Although the hackers are unlikely to have gained any confidential information, Mr Soltani said the stolen credentials could be used to access other services for which a person has signed up using the same username and password.

Spurs Fans Attack

The suspects are accused of wounding and aggravated damage at a pub in the Italian capital.

Gascoigne still believes he can get back on track after his latest relapse, according to players’ union chief executive Gordon Taylor who had been in contact with the former player. He said: “He still feels he is capable of getting back on track and it is a relapse he has had. I can only say, whatever help he needs, he must come on board and we will help to provide it. I think he does need specialist care and a very strong 24hour support system, but again, it needs him to be part of that.”

Taylor is adamant the PFA will not be giving up on Gascoigne.

Ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel posted on Twitter that the organisation needed

to “step up” its efforts to help the troubled star, Taylor stressed how much work it had already put in. He said: “I can’t think of a player who has had more support and constant help over the number of years that we have been there for Paul. It is quite ironic. It is nice that people like Peter Schmeichel care about him, but they don’t appreciate the work we have done for him, a lot of which has to be confidential. If anything, I have been criticised at times for keeping faith and trying to keep going with him.”

The Professional Footballers’ Association has vowed to continue giving the former England midfielder as much support as possible.

Three men have been arrested after nine homes were raided in Rome as part of an investigation into an attack on Spurs fans last year.

The suspects - aged between 25 and 30 - are accused of wounding and aggravated damage at the Drunken Ship pub in the city centre in November before a Europa League match between Lazio and Tottenham Hotspur.

Violence broke out when 50 assailants stormed the bar where Spurs fans were gathered. Their faces were masked with motorbike helmets and scarves and they were armed with knives, baseball bats and knuckle dusters.

Seven people were injured, including an American and a Bangladeshi,

and the pub was left in tatters, with windows broken and chairs and tables overturned.

Two of the men being held are Lazio fans. Another six are being questioned but have not been formally arrested. Sources said they all have links with extreme right Lazio fans known as ‘ultras’. Another 20 raids are expected.

Ashley Mills, a Tottenham fan who was in Rome to watch the Lazio game, suffered serious injuries to his skull and thigh.

He needed emergency surgery after he was slashed in the upper thigh and lost several pints of blood.

Doctors kept him in hospital for 10 days before he was discharged and flown back to Essex by a private air ambulance.

Other Spurs fans hurt in the attack included Dave Lesley, Stephen Tierney and Christopher Allen.

Troggs Frontman Dies

Facebook.com/TenerifeWeekly rEG Presley, frontman for the The Troggs, has died following a long battle with cancer, friends of the singer have announced. Keith altham, a music publicist and a personal friend of Presley, posted a tribute to the 71-year-old singer/songwriter on his Facebook page.

It said: “My dear old pal Reg Presley of The Troggs died today at 1.00, surrounded by family and friends at his home in Andover following a succession of recent strokes and a losing battle with cancer. He was one very real person in a sometimes very unreal world. Our thoughts are with his wife Brenda and the family and those legions of fans who loved his music and his band. I will miss him hugely.”

Presley was admitted to hospital in December 2011 after suffering a suspected stroke, which followed at least one previous stroke. He then announced he had lung cancer the following December and said he was retiring from music.

His most famous composition was Love Is All Around, which stayed at number one in the UK singles for 15 weeks in 1994 when it was cov-

ered by Wet Wet Wet. However The Troggs’ best-known song, Wild Thing, was not actually written by Presley, it was a cover version of the song written by Chip Taylor.

It reached No 1 in the US and No 2 in the UK.

Presley’s daughter Karen confirmed the death of her father to music website WENN. She said: “He passed away peacefully at home and myself, my brother and our mother were with him. We’re absolutely heartbroken.”

Harry’s Official Africa Visit

Prince Harry is to visit the charity, Sentebale, he co-founded in 2006, in Africa at the end of February.

Only weeks after returning from Afghanistan, Captain Harry Wales will undertake a three-day official visit to the kingdom of Lesotho where he spent his gap year in 2004. Here Prince Harry is known by the name Mohale, which means brave man or warrior.

St James’ Palace issued a statement saying: “Prince Harry will visit Lesotho and South Africa from 25th to 27th February on behalf of his charity, Sentebale. Prince Harry will spend the first two days privately, visiting Sentebale programmes throughout Lesotho.

On 27th February Prince Harry will carry out public engagements in the Maseru district of

Lesotho and then travel to Johannesburg to attend the Sentebale Gala Dinner.”

The Gala Dinner will mark the launch of Sentebale’s major capital fundraising programme to raise money to build the first permanent Mamohato Centre for children and young people. The Sentebale charity aims to help vulnerable and homeless children and those with HIV. It is estimated that 400,000 children in Lesotho under the age of 18 are orphans or vulnerable children. Sentebale means “forget-me-not” in Sesotho, the national language of Lesotho, and was chosen

by Prince Harry as a reminder of the charity work undertaken by his mother and that of co-founder Prince Seeiso.

In Lesotho, the Prince will visit the Kananelo Centre for the Deaf and the Reitumetse Church Project, which care for orphaned children and those with disabilities.

Growing Artificial 5-Year-Old In Hostage Siege Rescued Organs A Step Closer

A 5-year-old boy, named only as Ethan, who was held hostage for a week is now safe and his captor dead after FBI agents stormed an underground bunker in Alabama. Officials said the raid went ahead after negotiations with 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes collapsed and he was seen with a gun.

Fearing the child was in imminent danger; agents entered the bunker and rescued the child. The boy, who has Asperger’s syndrome, was taken to hospital nearby. Dykes had snatched the boy from a school bus last week after killing the driver, Charles Poland.

Scientists are a step closer to creating artificial human organs which could be used for transplants after 3D printing produced clusters of stem cells. The technique could be used to generate tissue for drug-testing currently carried out on animals.

The 3D printing technology relies on an adjustable “microvalve”, which builds up layers of human embryonic stem cells. The cells, which originate from early stage embryos, are blank slates which have the potential to become any type of tissue in the body.

In the long term, the new printing technique could pave the way for those cells to be incorporated into transplant-ready laboratorymade organs and tissues, said researchers at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh The technique’s breakthrough is in its gentle handling of the delicate cells which gives them a greater chance to thrive, they said.

Lead scientist Dr Will Shu said: “We found that the valve-based printing is gentle enough to maintain high stem cell viability”. He also said it was “accurate enough to produce spheroids

of uniform size and, most importantly, the printed human embryo stem cells maintained their pluripotency - the ability to differentiate into any other cell type”.

Taking a cell from a patient and using it in the 3D printing process should enable scientists to implant the generated tissue back into the patient without triggering an immune response.

Jason King, of the stem cell biotech company Roslin Cellab, part of the research team said: “Normally, laboratories grow cells in 2D but some cell types have been printed in 3D. However, up to now, human stem cell cultures have been too sensitive to manipulate in this way. This is a scientific development which we hope and believe will have immensely valuable long-term implications for reliable, animalfree drug-testing and, in the longer term, to provide organs for transplant on demand without the need for donation and without the problems of immune suppression and potential organ rejection.”

The scientists behind the breakthrough believe that the 3D printing technology could lead to a ‘production line’ of artificial organs in 10 years’ time, but not before.

An ambulance that had been parked near Dykes’ bunker during the siege was seen driving away. But it was not clear if anyone was inside. Authorities refused to elaborate about how they had observed Dykes or how he died. However, an official in Midland City, citing information from law enforcement sources, said police had shot Dykes.

Officials had been sending food and medicine to Dykes and the boy in the bunker.

Neighbours described Dykes as a man who had beaten a dog to death, threatened to shoot children for stepping onto his property, and patrolled his garden at night with a torch and a firearm.

Government records and interviews with neighbours indicate that Dykes had been in the US Navy, on active duty from 1964 to 1969. He was awarded several times, including the Vietnam Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

He had minor skirmishes with the law in Florida, which included a 1995 arrest for improper exhibition of a weapon. The misdemeanour was dismissed. He had also been arrested for possession of marijuana in 2000.

He returned to Alabama about two years ago, moving onto the rural farm about 100 yards from his nearest neighbours.

rebecca To retire At 23

DoUBLE olympic Champion swimmer rebecca adlington has officially announced her retirement from the sport at the age of 23. Speaking at a press conference in London, adlington, whose career has brought her olympic, World, European and Commonwealth titles, says she no longer, has what it takes to compete with younger swimmers.

She said: “I can’t do the same level of work; I need far more time for recovery. It’s time. Beijing changed my entire life, everyone wanted to learn about me. It was the best moment of my entire career. I am so glad my world record still stands. I hate the word retire. I love swimming but as a competitive element and elite athlete I won’t compete any more.

I’ll always be swimming even when I am 90 years old.”

Speculation over her future has been rife since she missed out on gold medals in the 400m and 800m freestyle events at London 2012, she apologised to the home crowd for doing so despite winning two bronze medals. She confirmed shortly afterwards that she would not be competing at Rio in 2016.

Swimming is a sport where competitors reach their peak at a young age. The American swimmer Michael Phelps, enjoyed a long career but he also retired this year at the age of 27, ending a career that saw him win 18

Olympic Gold medals, 22 Olympic medals in all.

Success in the pool at London 2012 was dominated by the young. The Chinese swimmer, Ye Shiwen, astonished spectators with her freestyle comeback in the 400m individual medley, taking the gold at the age of just 16. She was faster than the men’s winner Ryan Lochte.

Adlington finished third in the 800m freestyle behind 15-yearold US swimmer Katie Ledecky.

Phelps was one of the first to congratulate Adlington on her retirement and wish her luck for the future. In a statement he said: “Her accomplishments speak for themselves, she has been a great representative for British Swimming and the sport over all.

I congratulate her on a fantastic career and wish her all the best in the future.”

Adlington has now set her sights on teaching young people to swim and in a message on her personal website says that while she is proud of what she has achieved, she’s “not finished yet”. She said: “My vision is that every child in Britain will be able to swim 25 metres by the time they leave primary school. Being able to swim is such a wonderful life skill, and I see this as my greatest challenge in swimming.”

Her retirement statement came just 24 hours after her coach since the age of 12; Bill Furniss was announced as the new Great Britain coach. She paid tribute to him and said he was “going to do such a brilliant job”.

The REAL Million Dollar Man

A

bionic man, complete with artificial organs, synthetic blood and robot limbs, is to go on display at the Science Museum in central London.

Although it cost almost £640,000 ($1m) to build, it is a fraction of the cost of the Six Million Dollar Man from the cult 1970s TV series, but the 6ft 6in (2m) humanoid has a lot in common with its screen counterpart.

The artificial man was built by a team of leading robotics experts for a new Channel 4 documentary, How To Build A Bionic Man. It uses some of the latest advances in mechanical limbs, and has an artificial pancreas, kidney, spleen and trachea, and a functioning blood circulatory system.

The man’s head features a pair of retinal implants behind his brown irises, to allow him to sense objects in front of him, cochlear implants to allow him to hear and he is covered with artificial skin. He even has artificial intelligence and a speech synthesis system allowing him to understand simple statements and respond to questions.

The finished “man” can walk and talk, and apparently says his name is Rex and informs people that he likes Ralph Lauren and rap music. All

of his components could, theoretically, be welded to a human body to replace missing or worn out parts.

The aim of the project was to show how close medicine has got to what seemed like pure science fiction only a couple of decades ago.

Clare Matterson, of the Wellcome Trust, which is supporting the exhibition, said: “Throughout history people have always sought to enhance themselves to overcome disabilities or to become ‘bigger, better, stronger and faster’. Science is making aspirations and even fantasy ever more possible. We only have to look back at last summer’s Paralympics to see how transforming technology has become.”

The 1970s show The Six Million Dollar Man told the fictional story of a former astronaut whose body was largely rebuilt with artificial parts after he suffered a neardeath accident. Lee Majors played Colonel Steve Austin, whose bionic left eye allowed him to see for miles into the distance. His bionic left arm allowed him to lift bulldozers and his bionic legs allowed him to run at 90mph. The show’s catchphrase was: “We can rebuild him.”

The Science Museum exhibit opened yesterday, Thursday, and aims to explore how some perceptions of human identity change as progress is made in bionics.

Tug Of War Football Fixing Ring Smashed Horror

A criminal ring suspected of fixing 380 matches has been smashed by police in Europe. The matches included World Cup qualifying games, European Championship qualifiers, two Champions League games and some top-flight matches in European national leagues. According to sources one of the Champions League matches had been played in England during the last three or four years.

The two South El Monte High School students were rushed to Los Angeles CountyUSC Medical Centre, after they had several fingers torn off during a game of tugof-war at their high school in Southern California.

“They are both stable and the parents were by their bedside,” hospital spokeswoman Rosa Sacca told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

“They were getting ready to be taken to the operating room to try to reattach the fingers.”

School district official Edward Zuniga declined to

identify the students, a boy and a girl, but the newspaper said the girl was on the school’s soccer team and the boy was an American football player. The teenagers had been taking part in a lunchtime activity celebrating homecoming with current and former students on Monday.

“We’ll review the activity with the district administration,” Mr Zuniga said. “We’re in the early stages. We just want to make sure we have all the facts straight before we talk about changing activities.”

Authorities declined to say how many fingers were lost or explain how the tug-ofwar caused the injuries.

Officials found evidence that a Singapore-based crime group was spending up to 100,000 euros (£86,000) per match to bribe players and officials. The investigation uncovered 8m euros (£6.9m) in betting profits and 2m euros (£1.7m) in bribes to players and officials, and has already led to several prosecutions.

The head of European police agency Europol, Rob Wainwright, said the investigation had identified about 425 corrupt

officials, players and serious criminals in 15 countries. It had uncovered “matchfixing activity on a scale we have not seen before”. He added that while many fixed matches were already known, the Europol investigation had lifted the lid on widespread involvement and organised crime in rigging games. “This is the first time we have established substantial evidence that organised crime is now operating in the world of football,” he

said, adding that there was now a “concerted effort” across the sport to tackle the corruption.

Most of the fixed matches were played in Turkish, German and Swiss championships, but other suspicious matches were identified in Africa, Asia and South and Central America.

Europol refused to identify any suspects, players or matches involved, citing the on-going investigations.

World Trade Centre Graffiti Tributes Workers engaged in building New York’s tallest tower on the site of the World Trade Centre have been invited to leave messages of remembrance on beams, walls and stairwells of the skyscraper that is being built to replace the towers.

They range from tributes to 9/11 victims to sketches and poetry. Some beams are covered in a jumble of graffiti hearts, flowers and messages. Families of victims invited to the site left names and comments, as have fire fighters and police officers who were among the first to respond to the attack.

The words “change is from within” have been scrawled on an iron beam in the 104-storey high-rise

that soars above the site.

One of the last beams for One World Trade Centre hoisted up last year has a special handwritten message: “We remember. We rebuild.

We come back stronger!” The message is signed “Barack Obama”. For-

mer Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff wrote: “With you in spirit - those who perished those who fought, those who build.”

Ironworker Kevin Murphy says the graffiti is a way for workers to express their feelings about 9/11.

“This is not just any construction site, this is a special place for these guys,” he said. Everyone here wants to be here, they want to put this building up. They’re part of the redemption.”

Parisian Trouser Thunderbirds Law Revoked Are Back

Women in Paris are now allowed, by law, to wear trousers in Paris after a 213-yearold ban was finally revoked. City chiefs had first issued the order in 1800 forcing women to ask permission from the police if they wanted to “dress like a man”. The order was later amended in 1892 and 1909 to allow women to wear trousers if they were “holding a bicycle handlebar or the reins of a horse” but it has officially remained on the books since then.

A French politician has now decriminalised thousands of Parisian women by saying that the law is incompatible with modern French values.

Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, the minister for women’s rights, issued a statement saying that while the order had not been taken off the statutes, it had been made irrelevant by changes in French law.

The Classic and much loved children’s TV series Thunderbirds is set to return to screens in an updated version in 2015. Thunderbirds Are Go! will be made using a mixture of CGI animation and live-action model sets, with 26 half-hour episodes scheduled to go out on ITV and CITV.

She said: “This order was aimed, first of all, at limiting the access of women to certain offices or occupations by preventing them from dressing in the manner of men. This order is incompatible with the principles of equality between women and men. From that incompatibility stems the implicit abrogation of the order.”

The order was issued following the French Revolution when Parisian women demanded the right to wear trousers in an attempt to

win equality. At the time, working-class revolutionaries were known as “sansculottes” for wearing trousers instead of the silk-knee breeches (culottes) which were favoured by the ruling classes.

The regime that took power after the monarchy was deposed is thought to have been afraid that equality for women would undermine its power. It used orders, like the banning of trousers, as a way of keeping them in their place.

The return of the series marks 50 years since it first aired in 1965 and launched its puppet cast, which included characters like Scott, Virgil, The Hood and Lady Penelope.

Thunderbirds also enjoyed a comeback in the 1990s when repeats of the show brought it to a whole new audience and made Tracy Island the must-have toy for a new generation.

New Zealand’s Pukeko Pictures is co-producing the series with help from Weta Workshop, a visual effects and props company that has worked on films like Lord of The Rings and Avatar.

mous fleet of rescue vehicles will again be the heroes of the new show, ITV confirmed.

It also said it would “affectionately pay tribute” to the legacy of the original show.

“Thunderbirds is a highly respected brand that continues to hold recognition around the world,” said head of ITV Studios, Denise O’Donoghue. “We look forward to taking the show to another level while retaining the much-loved heritage that has endured over the past 50 years.”

Thunderbirds creator Gerry Anderson, who was also brought us Stingray and Captain Scarlet, died aged 83 in December 2012.

THE former US First Dog, Barney, the much-loved Scottish terrier who became as famous as his “Dad”, George Bush by taking millions of viewers on a video tour of the White House, has died. He passed a w a y a f t e r suffering from cancer at the age of 12, 84 in dog years.

Mr Bush and his wife, Laura, released a statement confirming Barney’s death, mourning him as a polite host to visiting heads of state, an aspiring Secret Service agent keen on guarding the S o u t h Lawn, and an avid armadillo hunter. “Barney and I enjoyed the outdoors.

He loved to accompany me when I fished for bass at the ranch.

He was a fierce armadillo hunter. At Camp David, his fa-

vourite activity was chasing golf balls on the chipping green. Barney guarded the South Lawn entrance of the White House as if he were a Secret Service agent.

He wandered the halls of the West Wing looking for treats from his many friends. He starred in Barney Cam and gave the American people Christmas tours of the White House.

“Barney greeted queens, heads of state and prime ministers.

He was always polite and never jumped in their laps. Barney was by my side during our eight years in the White House. He never discussed politics and was always a faithful friend. Laura and I will miss our pal.”

The 43rd President, who has since taken up painting since leaving public office, posted an oil

portrait of his beloved dog on Facebook.

Wearing a tiny video camera on his collar, Barney gave a dog-level tour of the White House in 2002, shuffling from room to room and growling at the Christmas tree.

The video starring the black pup proved a hit as 24 million people watched its first day online. It also helped reopen the White House to the nation after it had been closed to tourists the previous holiday season in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

He later reprised his role in a number of Barney Cam holiday videos, many still available on YouTube. Barney, later joined at the White House by another Scottish terrier, Miss Beazley, who also had her own Web page.

Richard III Uncovered

The facial reconstruction of King Richard III has been released by the Richard III Society after it was confirmed that a skeleton unearthed in Leicester was that of the king who died in the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.

The image is based on a CT scan taken by experts at the University of Leicester, who discovered the king’s skeleton during an archaeological dig last September with the help of the society. The reconstruction was unveiled at The Society of Antiquaries at Burlington House in Piccadilly, London.

Researchers have concluded “beyond reasonable doubt” that the remains, were proven to be that of King Richard II, finally solving the 500-year-old mystery about his final resting place. was the monarch.

There were cheers at the University of Leicester as the announcement was made.

Bone specialist Jo Appleby said a study of the bones provided “a highly convincing case for identification of Richard III. The analysis of the skeleton proved that it was an adult male but was an unusually slender, almost feminine, build for a man. This is in keeping with historical sources which describe Richard as being of very slender build,” she said.

DNA samples from a Michael Ibsen, a Canadian-born furniture maker who is a direct descendant of Richard’s sister, Anne of York, provided further certainty. Dr Turi King, the project geneticist, said: “There is a DNA match between the maternal

DNA from the descendants of the family of Richard III and the skeletal remains we found at the Greyfriars dig. In short, the DNA evidence points to these being the remains of Richard III.” The skeleton, with severe trauma to the skull and an arrow in the back, was uncovered on the first day of a three-week dig at the site of what is believed to have been the choir of Greyfriars Church. Historical records show the long-lost church was the burial site of the monarch, following his brutal death at the battle of Bosworth Field in 1485.

The skeleton was found in good condition, although with its feet missing, at a depth of 68cm. Its hands were crossed over the front of the pelvis and there was no evidence of a coffin or shroud found with it.

The king’s remains will now be reinterred at Leicester Cathedral, the nearest consecrated ground, in keeping with archaeological practice.

Richard III was the last Plantagenet monarch, a Yorkist defeated by Henry Tudor, who became Henry VII. “It will be a whole new era for Richard III,” the Richard III Society’s Lynda Pidgeon said. “It’s certainly going to spark a lot more interest. Hopefully people will have a more open mind toward Richard.”

Shakespeare portrayed Richard III as hunchbacked tyrant although historians argue that the king was the victim of Tudor propaganda. His brief reign from 1483 saw liberal reforms, including the introduction of the right to bail and the lifting of restrictions on books and printing presses.

Last Andrew Sister Dies

The last surviving member of the hugely successful Andrews Sisters singing trio, Patty Andrews, has died at the age of 94. A spokesman confirmed she died of natural causes at her home in Los Angeles, California.

Patty Andrews was the youngest of the three whose tight harmonies with Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree were hits.

The Andrews Sisters sold more than 75 million records and became household names in the 1940s when they entertained World War Two troops in Africa, the United States and

Europe. They specialised in swing and played with some of the best-known big bands of the era, including those led by Glen Miller, Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey. The sisters also appeared in 16 films, including roles alongside Bud Abbott and Lou Costello in Buck Privates and Hold That Ghost, and with Bob Hope and

Bing Crosby in Road To Rio. Born in Minnesota, they started their careers by performing in local talent shows and moved to California after finding fame.

LaVerne Andrews died of cancer in 1967, and Maxene Andrews died in 1995 of a heart attack.

ELIa Smith has called time on her television career, claiming programme makers are more interested in entertainment than educating people how to cook. She first appeared on TV more than 40 years ago and has sold millions of cookbooks - she will continue teaching people to cook using online lessons.

“This is the future for me and the population. It’s miles ahead. If you do a TV programme now, it’s got to entertain. When I started, there was further education in the BBC; now you have to entertain. You have someone telling me I haven’t got time to show this or I haven’t got time to show that.”

The 71-year-old said she had turned down a recent approach from the BBC - a refusal which now marks the end of “Delia on the telly”.

A staunch Norwich City fan, she is one of the club’s directors, alongside her husband Michael Wynn-Jones, however in 2005 she attracted adverse attention during the half-time break of a home match against Manchester City. Norwich were fighting an ultimately unsuccessful battle against relegation from the Premier League.

In an attempt to rally the crowd, she grabbed the microphone from the

club announcer on the pitch and said: “A message for the best football supporters in the world: we need a 12th man here. Where are you? Where are you? Let’s be ‘avin’ you! Come on!” It was not well received. Norwich lost the match 3-2. Smith denied suggestions in the media at the time that she had been drunk.

“Saint Delia’s” first job was as a hairdresser and she also worked as a shop assistant and in a travel agency before starting her career in cookery. At 21, she started work in a tiny restaurant in Paddington called “The Singing Chef”. Starting as a washer-upper, then moved on to wait-

ressing before being allowed to help with the cooking. She started reading English cookery books in the British Museum, trying out the recipes on a family with whom she was living at the time.

was taken on as the cookery writer for the Daily Mirror’s new magazine.

Their Deputy Editor was Michael Wynn-Jones, whom she later married.

Her first piece featured kipper pâté, beef in beer and a cheesecake.

What is not so well known is that she baked the cake which was used on the cover of The

Rolling Stones’ album “Let It Bleed”.

In 1972 Smith started a column in the Evening Standard. She later went to the rival Evening News, only to return to The Standard when that newspaper bought out The News. She wrote for both for 12 years; later she wrote a column for the Radio Times until 1986.

Her first television appearances came in the early 1970s, as resident cook on BBC East’s regional magazine programme Look East, shown on BBC One, shown in the East Anglia area Smith became famous by hosting a cookery television show “Family Fare” which ran from 1973-1975.

proached BBC Further Education with an idea for a televised cookery course. She wanted to teach people how to cook; to take them back to basics and cover all the classic techniques. Accompanying books were needed to explain not only how, but why, things happen. This led to her three Cookery Course books.

Smith became a recognisable figure amongst young people in the 1970s and early 1980s when she was an occasional guest on the BBC’s Saturday morning children’s programme Multicoloured Swap Shop and did basic cooking demonstrations; she and host Noel Edmonds had a flirtatious way of interacting with each other back then.

THoUSaNDS of tourists with a head for heights have scaled one of Europe’s tallest skyscrapers for the first time. around 4,800 people visited The Shard on its opening day, paying up to £24.95 for a ticket. on a clear day, visitors are promised spectacular views of the capital - but visibility has been hampered by wet and cloudy weather so far.

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, officially opened the panoramic viewing platform on level 72 of

the 310m (1,016ft) describing The Shard’s observation deck as “a most amazing place”. He said: “I don’t think there’s anything in London like this.

It’s the closest thing to being in an aeroplane and looking down on London. You can see all the bends in the river, you can see my office, you can see Buckingham Palace, and you can see the whole city for 40 miles around.”

Among the visitors on the opening day was James Episcopou, who proposed to his girlfriend Laura Taylor more than 240m above the ground. The 22-year-old got down on one knee moments after the official opening ceremony. He said he

had “no idea” Boris Johnson - and a host of journalists and photographers - would be there to share the moment.

“I’ve had it planned since July last year,” he said. “When tickets first came out I thought I had to buy them. It’s the perfect place to propose. Laura means everything to me and I wanted to make her feel on top of the world. We had no idea the media were going to be there, but when we arrived we saw Boris Johnson and there were cameras everywhere. When people plan a proposal they think ‘how can I make it special?’ I managed to do quite a good job.”

Big bucks for upchuck!!

A Local Morecombe resident got more than he bargained for during his morning walk on the beach with his dog Madgea veritable fortune in whale vomit, yes, whale vomit!!

Ken Wilman was minding his own business when the pooch made a beeline for the lump, “I didn’t actually realise what it was at first. I couldn’t understand why Madge [the dog] was so interested in it.

It smelled horrible.

“I left it, came back home and looked it up on the internet. When I saw how much it could be worth, I went back to the beach and grabbed it!”

The lucky duo had stumbled on a 3 kg chunk of whale puke known as “ambergris” or floating gold, an ingredient in high end perfumes

such as Chanel No.5, an amount weighing as much as 3 kilos could fetch as much as £100,000 -depending on its freshness, which can be determined in a test site in Europe where it will be aged “like a fine wine”. Although often described as whale vomit it is more likely “pooped” and is produced

tect their intestines from the sharp beaks of the squid they feed on.

Mr Wilman has already had an offer of £42,000 but has opted to wait for the test results to see if it’s worth more.....I walk my dog every morning and never ever stumbled upon whale vomit...vomit, yes, just not whale vomit!

Ralph wrecks the box office!

Although video game enthusiasts still await the “holy grail” of a really good movie adaptation of a game, at least it looks like 2013 has given them a really good movie ABOUT videogames!!

“Wreck it Ralph” is the new Disney 3D computer animated film that’s delighting critics and viewers alike, tells the story of Ralph, the video arcade villain of the “Donkey Kong” clone, “Fix it Felix jr.”

Ralph is tired of being the bad guy and dreams of being a hero, one night he breaks out of his own game and begins to explore the other games in the arcade-and that’s when the fun really starts!

“Moon” director Duncan Jones has been given the daunting task of pleasing 10 million “World of Warcraft” fans, after it was announced that he will be directing the $100 million big screen adaptation of the hugely popular online game.

The game is set in a “Tolkienesque” world of elves, orcs and trolls and is a world record holder with over 10 million online subscribers and with the critically acclaimed director on board. Her dad, Alex Edwards, is a good friend of mine, a fantastic singer who has a band called “Alexander’s Palace” which worked the same circuit I did when I toured with “FOXX”, I’ve not seen Alex for a few years now, but being an ex-marine, he could always handle himself, so Zayn, you better start honing those skateboarding skills, you never know when you may next have to move really, really fast!!

WEST Midlands Police staged a “tweetathon” to highlight time-wasting 999 calls. It is hoped the day-long social media initiative, which ran from Friday to Saturday morning, will reduce the number of inappropriate calls clogging up its 999 system.

As part of the campaign, the force tweeted links to recordings of previous bizarre calls, including one from a man claiming to have found a hair in his food at a fast food restaurant. Another caller asked for help after forgetting her Facebook password, while a man dialled 999 to ask how to dial the 101 nonemergency numbers.

mes, from the Force Contact department at West Midlands Police, described some of the calls received by 999 operators as ridiculous. She said: “We regularly receive calls on the 9s about lost property, people asking for directions and from people who have been denied entry to a nightclub. It’s astonishing listening to them but they hide a serious truth. Each call often takes minutes to deal with as staff have to clarify the situation - it might not sound like much but, if someone is trying to get through to report a genuine life or death emergency, then a minute is a very long time to wait. I cannot stress enough that the 999 number is for emergencies only.”

West Midlands Police receives over 1,500 calls a day to the 999 number.

Marooned Mercedes

WorKErS had to resurface a car park around a stranded Mercedes after its owner decided to move barriers and park there.

The area had been blocked off by diggers at Edinburgh Waverley railway station, but when they returned the next day, they found the car parked in the middle of the site. The workers got on with the job and dug up the surface around the marooned

A Network Rail spokesman said: “Part of the car park had been cordoned off so we could begin resurfacing it and improve the lighting too. Whoever the driver was, he or she decided to move the barriers and park in the worksite anyway. We did the work but we left a ramp for them to exit and will be happy to return their vehicle if they contact us.”

The scene was caught on camera by Twitter user, who tweeted: “Not a good day to park in the Edinburgh Waverley car park.”

The work is part of Network Rail’s £100m refurbishment project of the station.

Shop Till I Drop

I took a visit to the African Market this week. This is the name given to the big fruit and veg market in Santa Cruz where you can find not only all the usual things we eat, but also things that are hard to find in Tenerife. The market was teeming with people and business looked good. There were giant papayas, edible Yucca, Tamarinds and Uglyfruit. I’ve never seen so many types of potato in one place and I’m not sure that I would eat some of them!

In the Chinese supermarket I bought some jackfruit which turned out to be delicious and a bottle of “Kuei Hua Chen Chiew”. This is a fruity flower flavoured

wine which is quite potent at 14% alcohol by volume. It’s delicious very cold or on the rocks.

The smell of herbs and spices is incredible and some of the stalls sell home-made pasties which are crammed with pulled and flavoured meats such as beef and chicken.

We stuffed our faces with some things that we had never tried before then went to the best Chinese buffet I have ever seen and continued to eat until the time came to roll down the hill to the car.

I can recommend this market, especially on Sundays as it is in the middle of the biggest outdoor market and flea market that you have ever seen!

Life Is A Drag

Working with Bitter and Twisted is great fun. We get to meet people, many of whom have become good friends over the years.

I never dreamed that I would be performing a drag show and I fell into it completely by accident after years of singing in shows and with bands and dancing in and directing shows and managing entertainment in the UK. I had always looked at drag as “Down Market” but nothing could be further from the truth. Some of the drag acts I have met work extremely hard and can hold an audience under their spell for hours.

The word is first thought to have been used in the 1870’s.

Some believe that it comes from theatre slang when long skirts would trail on the floor. Others believe that it dates back to Shakespearian times when women were not permitted on the stage and men would play the female leads.

During rehearsal sessions Dr.A.G would appear on the script indicating “DRessed As Girl”.

During Charles II’s reign rules were relaxed to let women to play the female roles in London, following the fashion that was sweeping French theatre.

After murdering almost half of the world’s population in movies over the years, Sylvester Stallone has given his support to the Anti-Guns movement in his country. Am I the only one that finds this a little, well ......... strange?

Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards

I worked with Eddie back in the late 80’s.

He was quite an outgoing guy and he seemed to be taking his fame in his stride.

He spent time with the people and signed autographs for the kids who loved him.

These days, only pantomime features “drag” on the theatre stage, Infact men play women and women play the male lead.

Thankfully, drag is very much alive on the Cabaret circuits all over the world.

You can hear the audiences laughing out loud and enjoying the colour and spectacle that the costumes and outrageous wigs and jewellery provide. I was delighted that the “Senile Sisters” made one of their rare appearances in the south for my birthday party.

John and Gordon are my

personal favorites’ as far as drag is concerned.

I personally prefer to see lots of costume changes and comedy mime. I’m not a fan of those acts who want to look exactly like women. I think woman do it far better.

It was great to see him win the final of Tom Daley’s “Splash” game show on television. He was so much better than the other contestants from the very beginning, mind you; he is used to throwing himself off great heights.

Many years ago, he brought a single out called “Fly Eddie Fly”. It was a dreadful effort

and I joked with him that the only place that it might get to number one was in a swamp in Vietnam.

He is a lovely guy and it is

nice to see someone genuine in the spotlight for a change.

Eddie the Eagle flies again. I bet he appears again on TV soon!

Hilary Clinton

The lady has stood down from her position in Obama’s government.

I think he will genuinely miss her.

She has become a good friend to him over their years working together.

However, don’t think for one minute that she has gone forever. I am 99% sure that she will

not only be the next president of the USA, but that she will win by a much larger percentage of the vote than most of the presidents of the last 20 years. The woman is a fighter.

She is dedicated; after all, she stood by her lying, cheating husband and by doing so, came out shining. I like her and I hope that this strong and very able lady beats the hell out of the fellas!

rAF BASe FOr SAle On eBAy years. Birmingham-based Stylespace bought the land from the RAF in 2006 for a reported £4m but it has not proved suitable for their plans.

The RAF still carries out communication work for aircraft on the site. This would remain, alongside the RAF Air Defence Radar Museum,

THE Neatishead radar base in Norfolk has been put up for sale on eBay. The former raF station comes complete with high-security fence, underground bunker and a helipad.

The base opened in 1941 and played a key role in monitoring Britain’s skies during World War II and the Cold War. Decommissioned in 2006, the 25-acre site has remained unused and a new owner is being sought.

Bargain hunters may be disappointed as an asking price of £2.5m has been set, with bidding ending today, Friday. Described as a “substantial” reduction from its previous value; the seller stressed that only serious bids need apply.

Agent Nick Barlow, from Midlands-based Barlow Associates, said the base had been on the market for some time and he hoped the eBay listing would attract extra interest.

He said: “There’s only so much you can do in property magazines so we thought we’d try this and it has proved remarkably effective. It is something slightly different for people who wouldn’t otherwise have heard about it. The site has potential for a wide range of uses. The underground bunker would be a very good data storage centre and its proximity to the Norfolk Broads and the coast opens up leisure possibilities.”

There are 16 buildings on the site, including radar rooms, tennis and squash courts, station headquarters and the officers’ mess, the underground bunker dates from the Cold War

which was established on the air base 14 years ago.

Mr Barlow added that while the sale was unusual, cuts to defence budgets mean more opportunities are likely to come up for anyone wanting to invest in a former military base.

Skyscraper Blast kills 32

aN explosion at the headquarters of state-owned Mexican oil company Pemex killed 32 people and injured more than 120 others. around 52 people were kept in hospital following the blast which blew out windows and damaged three floors of the 51-storey skyscraper in Mexico City’s commercial centre.

The blast occurred in the basement of an administrative building next to the tower, where thousands of people work. The main floor and the mezzanine of the auxiliary building, where the explosion occurred, were heavily damaged, along with windows as far as three floors up.

Authorities have promised a thorough investigation, as hundreds of fire fighters, police and soldiers continued the search for survivors. Interior Minister Miguel Osorio Chong said it was uncertain if any of the 10,000 people who work in the five-building headquarters were still trapped, but that the search would continue.

Ana Vargas Palacio was desperately searching for her missing husband, Daniel Garcia Garcia, 36, who works in the building. She last heard from him at 1pm. “I called his phone many times, but a young man answered and told me he found the phone in the debris,” she said. The two have an 11-year-old daughter. His mother, Gloria Garcia Castane-

da, collapsed on a friend’s arm, crying, “My son. My son.”

Television images showed people being carried out of the building on office chairs.

Most of them showed injuries likely to have been caused by falling debris.

Pemex - full name Petroleos Mexicanos - said in a tweet that several workers were injured in the blast but no one answered at its offices. There has been no announcement about the cause of the blast, but in an earlier tweet, the company said it had evacuated the building because of problems with the electricity.

“It was an explosion, a shock, the lights went out and suddenly there was a lot of debris,” employee Cristian Obele told Milenio television, adding that he had been injured in the leg.

Maria Concepcion Andrade, 42, who lives on the block of Pemex building, said: “We were talking and all of sudden we heard an explosion with white smoke and glass falling from the windows. People started

running from the building covered in dust. A lot of pieces were flying.”

Police landed four rescue helicopters to remove the dead or injured. About a dozen tow trucks were furiously moving cars to make more landing room for the helicopters. Streets surrounding the building were closed as evacuees wandered around.

Shortly before the explosion, Pemex operations director Carlos Murrieta said on Twitter that the company had reduced its accident rate in recent years. Most Pemex accidents have occurred at pipeline and refinery installations.

A fire at a pipeline metering centre in northeast Mexico near the Texas border killed 30 workers in September, the largest-single toll in at least a decade for the company.

President Enrique Pena Nieto urged people not to speculate about the cause. “We have no conclusive report on the reason,” he said, pledging a probe “to get to the bottom” of the blast.

Shrove Tuesday

Pancake Tuesday 12th February – Let’s get tossing!!!!

For all you pancake lovers here are a couple of basic recipes for that special day. Personally I love Fluffy American pancakes with Maple syrup – who can resist? And also the traditional pancake recipe.

Fluffy American Pancakes: Ingredients 135g plain flour 1 tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. salt 2 tbsp. sugar 130ml milk 1 large egg, lightly beaten 2 tbsp. melted butter (allowed to cool slightly)

Method:

Sift the flour, baking powder, salt into a large bowl. Add the sugar. In a separate bowl or jug, lightly whisk together the milk and egg, then whisk in the melted butter.

Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture and, beat until you have a smooth batter. Any lumps will soon disappear with a little mixing. Let the batter stand for a few minutes.

Heat a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat and add a knob of butter. When it’s melted, add a ladle of batter (or two if your frying pan is big enough to cook two pancakes at the same time). It will seem very thick but this is how it should be.

Wait until the top of the pancake begins to bubble, then turn it over and cook until both sides are golden brown and the pancake has risen to about 1cm thick.

Repeat until all the batter is used up. You can keep the pancakes warm in a low oven, but they taste best fresh out the pan.

Serve with real maple syrup, Jam and extra butter if you like.

Basic Pancakes Ingredients

How to Easily toss!

110g plain flour, sifted Pinch of salt 2 eggs 200ml milk mixed with 75ml water 50g butter (for cooking the pancakes)

Hold the pan handle, ease a fish slice under the pancake, then quickly lift and flip it over. Make sure the pancake is lying flat against base of the pan with no folds, and then cook for another 30 secs before turning out onto a warm plate.

Method:

Mix all the ingredients together except the butter until you get a smooth creamy batter. Make sure that all the lumps have gone.

Next, get a good non-stick frying pan on a medium heat, and add the butter.

Add a ladle of batter when all the butter is melted and ensure the pan is fully coated with the pancake mix.

Allow cooking for 30 seconds, you can lift the edge with a palette knife to see if its tinged gold as it should be. Turn the pancake over with a pan slice or palette knife – the other side will need a few seconds only – then simply slide it out of the pan on to a plate.

Serve it with freshly squeezed lemon juice and sugar, or with a topping of filling of your choice!

Shrove Tuesday Facts

Shrove or ‘Pancake’ Tuesday is basically the day of preparation for Lent. It is a day to pig out on pancakes and party up large before the next day (Ash Wednesday) - the first day of Lent.

The custom of eating pancakes was from the need to use up eggs and butter which were originally prohibited during the forty days of Lent. The same reasoning is responsible for the association of eggs at Easter which is the end of Lent and time for another festival.

The most well-known celebration of Shrove Tuesday is the Pancake Day Race at Olney in Buckinghamshire which has been held since 1445. The race came about when a woman cooking pancakes heard the shriving bell summoning her to confession. She ran to church wearing her apron and still holding her frying pan and thus accidentally started a tradition that has lasted for over 500 years.

According to current rules, only women wearing a dress, an apron and a hat or scarf, may take part in the race.

Each contestant has a frying pan containing a hot cooking pancake. She must toss it 3 times during the race. The first woman to complete the winding 375 metre course and arrive at church, serve her pancake to the bellringer and be kissed by him, is the winner. She also receives a prayer book from the vicar.

Shattered dreams Brother-in-law bother I’ve had trouble finding love as I’ve always found flaws with all my boyfriends and ended up breaking up with them.

Now I’ve fallen head over heads for the most unsuitable person ever. It’s my brother in law. I’ve always thought he was a great guy since my sister started dating him but now I can’t even be in the same room as him without blushing and giggling like a fool.

How am I going to carry on like this? just pray that these feelings fade but they’re so strong I worry that they won’t.

After finishing my teaching course last year I got a job in a primary school, something I’ve always dreamt of. The problem is that I hate it!

The kids are so naughty and I don’t have any control over them. I’m devastated that my dream job has turned out like this. I don’t know what to do.

I’m so miserable that it’s starting to affect my home life too.

You shouldn’t look at this as a failure, it’s just a lesson isn’t it?

Give men a break for a while and spend some time working out what you really want? From where I’m standing, I can tell you point blank that a relationship isn’t it! So you’ve had a rough ride with men?

I’m sure I could find a million other girls who would say the same thing although I very much doubt that they would be zeroing in on other peoples men as a result! Of course it’s true that you can’t odds who you fall in love with but this isn’t love is it?

It’s an infatuation probably born out of the fact that you’re becoming more and more desperate to have the perfect relationship. Take a step back and look at the trouble you’re going to cause if you pursue this thing? It’s not worth it is it?

Happiness isn’t always about being in a relationship or having a bloke Katy.

Wedding jealousy Difficult memories

I’m chief bridesmaid at my best friend’s wedding next year and have been helping her to plan every last detail. I’m so happy for her but can’t help but feel jealous. I’ve never found the right man.

I’d love to have a big white wedding but I know I’ll never have the chance and my friend’s wedding just seems to be rubbing it in my face. Shall I pull out if I can’t do the job of chief bridesmaid properly?

None of us know what’s around the next corner Teri, not even me! Your problem isn’t the wedding, it’s you!

Being a part of this wedding should be a

You may not want to hear this but the very fact you have this attitude could be exactly what’s stopping you from meeting your own knight in shining armour. How do you expect to meet the right guy when you’ve already convinced yourself that it’s never going to happen?

If you really can’t face being chief bridesmaid then you need to tell your friend sooner rather than later. Personally though, I think you just need to kick yourself up the backside and get on with it!

I was raped when I was 16 and have only recently learnt to trust men again. I have a lovely new boyfriend who knows what I went through and is very understanding but there’s one thing I haven’t been able to tell him.

When we have sex I have flashbacks to the rape. If I concentrate really hard, I don’t have the flashbacks but I don’t enjoy the sex either.

Right now, you’re caught up with the worry of offending your boyfriend when really; you should be trying to come to terms with what happened to you. You say that you’re starting to trust men again but that’s not the entire solution.

There are things that you need to confront and

deal with in your mind and what you’re going through right now is a clear sign that you’re really not over the rape at all.

Whilst I’m not suggesting that you dump your current bloke, I would definitely say that you need to take things slowly from now on.

It’s up to you how much you tell him about your past and it may be better to get some proper help before you even think about that.

After McTiernan succeeds in escaping, she joins Cross and other detectives in the search for Casanova -- a trail that leads to Los Angeles, where similar crimes are being committed by someone known as “The Gentleman Caller.”

From The Heart ITV 1 - 21:00 - 22:00 ITV brings together a host of stars for a one-hour entertainment special, From The Heart, on 13 February at 9pm.

Raising awareness of organ donation and the NHS Organ Donor Register, the show is hosted by Dermot O’Leary and will feature a range of musical and comedy treats from famous faces including Rowan Atkinson, Hugh Laurie, Pixie Lott, Harry Enfield, Paul Whitehouse and some of the cast from from Outnumbered.

FelIPe Massa took Ferrari’s F138 to the top of the timesheet for the first time on Day Three of the Jerez test, but potentially the most significant development of the day was Mercedes rediscovering their reliability.

Mercedes had gone into the third day of running in southern Spain desperate for mileage on their new W04 after running into terminal reliability problems early on in each of the car’s first two days on track, which had left them with a meagre 29 laps on the board and trailing all their key rivals.

But the Brackley-based team empathetically bounced back on Thursday as Nico Rosberg racked up a mammoth 148 laps behind the wheel - nearly

the equivalent of two race distances - to surely calm some of the hysteria that accompanied their early Jerez woes.

Also encouraging was the car’s pace as Rosberg finished second on the timesheet, although his 1:18.776 time was the best part of nine tenths of a second slower than Massa’s as Ferrari made their own big statement on Thursday.

On a short run on the soft tyres during the late morning, the Brazilian

clocked what stands as the fastest time seen around the twisty Jerez circuit this winter - 1:17.879 - and was never headed thereafter.

Triple World Champion Sebastian Vettel made his first appearance of the winter on Day Three and his first day in the RB9 went smoothly as he took third place, the German one of three drivers to break the 100-lap barrier to continue Red Bull’s encouraging start to their pre-season preparations.

Under-fire Vijay Singh is due to partner Lee Westwood in the aT&T Pebble Beach Proam in California this week.

Last Thursday, the former world number one pulled out of the Phoenix Open hours before he was due to tee off citing a back injury.

It came just a day after admitting he had been using a deer antler spray previously found to contain a prohibited growth hormone.

His withdrawal had some people wondering if he had been suspended from the PGA Tour over the incident, but after practising for this week’s event he was reported to be involved in talks with Tour commissioner Tim Finchem on Wednesday.

When the Fijian finished his Tuesday session on the driving range, a journalist tried to speak to him but Singh refused to comment.

The Tour carries out drugtesting but does not take blood, and that is thought to

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has announced he will retire from football at the end of the season.

The 35-year-old arrived at Anfield as a trainee in 1994 and has made 723 appearances since making his Reds debut in January 1997.

In a statement Carragher, who is second only to Ian Callaghan on the club’s alltime appearance list, told liverpoolfc.com: “This will be my last season at Liverpool and my last as a professional footballer.

“I’m making this announcement now because I don’t want the manager or the club to be answering questions on my future when I’ve already decided what I am going to do.

“I will be fully committed between now and the end of the season to doing the very best for Liverpool Football Club, as I’ve done my entire career since joining aged just nine-years-old.

“It has been a privilege and an honour to represent this great club for as long as I have and I am immensely proud to have done so and thankful for all the support I have had.

“There are many memories I want to share and people to thank, but now is not the time for that.

“I won’t be making any

further comment on this decision until the end of the season; all our focus and concentration should be on achieving the best possible finish in the league this season and trying to win the last remaining trophy we are competing in.”

Carragher made his firstteam debut as a substitute in a Coca-Cola Cup tie at Middlesbrough in January 1997 and was part of the treblewinning team in 2001, picking up the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup He was also in the side that famously won the Champions League in 2005 on penalties against AC Milan in Rafael Benitez’s first season in charge.

While his Liverpool career progressed, Carragher was also starting his rise through the England ranks, where he went on to play at U20, U21 and at a senior level where he earned 38 caps.

He revealed he was quitting his England career in May 2007, but was persuaded to make a U-turn by manager Fabio Capello in 2010 and went on to play two group games in the World Cup in South Africa before retiring again.

Former team-mate Jason McAteer, who played alongside Carragher between 1995 and 1999, told Sky Sports News: “It’s not just a sad day for football but it’s a sad day for Jamie Carragher.

“I’m sure it’s not been a decision he’s taken lightly. He knuckled down, worked very hard and has become a credit to the game and the football club and that’s why it’s going to be a sad loss.

“When you have a player that has been around as long as he has it will leave a hole.”

Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson also paid tribute to Carragher, saying: “There have been rumours flying around about this so it’s not a complete surprise, but when you see Jamie coming back into the side against Arsenal and Manchester City and doing ever so well and not looking out of place, then you are maybe a bit surprised.

“But if one person knows his body that’s Carragher; he’s pushed it to the limit over the years, all for the great honour of playing for Liverpool, so he will know whether it is right or wrong to call it a day. We just have to give him credit for what he’s done for the football club.

“The biggest compliment I can pay him is that as he plays the game now, he could have fitted into any generation of Liverpool team.

“I know his passion for football. Carra has an obsession with the game, he watches football and knows his tactics - and he will be sought after.

Hopefully he can slot into the coaching staff at Liverpool, that would be ideal.”

Liverpool 1st option for Diakite

Liverpool are the favoured option for Lazio defender Modibo Diakite as he considers a move away from Italy.

The French centre-back has been at Lazio since 2006 but is out of contract in the summer and considering his options.

The 25-year-old’s agent Ulisse Savini claims Liverpool is the most likely destination for his client but admits there is no rush to do a deal.

“Liverpool is our first option for June,” Savini

told tuttomercatoweb.com.

“It’s in issue in progress and we have to talk yet.

“Everyone knows that the contract is expiring. Also, Lazio know there is no hurry.

“We’ll see in the coming days. However, it would be hard to say no to Liverpool.”

The Reds have options at the back but are believed to be looking for defensive additions in the summer with vice-captain Jamie Carragher yet to agree a new deal at Anfield.

Aridane Finds goal Touch In Time For Carnaval Crunch

Loro THE pitch was synthetic at Caudal but out of form striker aridane was the real deal as he broke his goal drought with two goals in a 2-3 victory. This was a thriller of a game but CD Tenerife sank their teeth into it and refused to let go ending up five points clear at the top of the Segunda B. Coach Alvaro Cervera shuffled the pack starting super sub Guillem Marti and the under fire Aridane up front, Chechu and Medina were out injured and Suso was dropped to the bench to welcome back Loro from suspension and give a start to new boy Fran Ochoa. Cristo Martin found Aridane in the first minute but he must have thought his bad streak was still haunting him as home keeper Ponzo stuck out a foot to stop his shot. In the other goal Sergio Aragoneses leapt high to take an early effort from Caudal, it was the start of a busy afternoon for both number ones.

Ponzo again denied Aridane with a push over the bar and Richard served notice with a driving shot that deflected for a corner after catching out the Tenerife defence. After 12 minutes Invernon improved on that by crashing his shot through the visiting defence and under Sergio, the first goal conceded for 591 minutes. Prosi was making things happen for Caudal, his free kick wasn’t far off target, and Bruno couldn’t get enough power in his header as he too was thwarted by Ponzo.

It was all going a bit too well till Suso showed he is no defender as Caudal attacked and the ball hit his raised hand for a penalty that Prosi converted.

Maybe with four minutes left a point would have been an acceptable return but with second placed Real Oviedo taking a surprise loss earlier in the day it would have also been a let off. CB Canarias Make La No Goals, No Hope Laguna Their Fortress For CD Marino

Few basketball teams will relish taking to the court at the Pabellon Santiago Martin, this season CB Canarias have made it their power base and reeled off a sixth straight home victory taking Cajasol Sevilla 77-68.

This was my first visit and I was mightily impressed, the passion of the 4,209 crowd poured down on the team from the imposing domed sports hall and the players responded with a strong performance that saw every squad player contribute. Taking the first quarter 16-14 Serbian Blagota Sekulic led the way dominating around the basket but it’s not just a giant’s game, two of the smaller players base Ricardo Uriz and guard Nicolas Richotti frustrated the big guns of Sevilla at every turn.

Team Sky Follow Bradley’s Tyre Tracks To Teide

Bradley Wiggins trained in and around Teide National Park in the run up to Tour de France and the Olympics and his year didn’t turn out too bad so Team Sky have chosen the same base for training in the first two weeks of March.

The first big team event of the year takes place in San Remo on 17 March, top riders Geraint Thomas, Edvald Bosson Hagen, and Bernard Eisel will be leading a pack of sports cyclists to Tenerife to get in shape.

Team Sky sports director Servais Knaven is looking forward to hitting the heights.

“The Tenerife approach worked for the Tour so we’re going to try and do it for the

classics. It won’t be worse than doing Paris-Nice and Tirreno, and we hope it will be better, The hotel sits on top of a volcano, the Pico de Teide, in a national park. Long, barren mountain roads lead to the top, but the riders can easily train at altitude.

They’ll look for climbs that are similar to the Flemish climbs. It’s the best preparation you can get I think,”
