So Martine McCutcheon has declared herself bankrupt. How on earth did she manage to end up in such a mess? She landed herself the role of Tiffany in Eastenders for four years, pretty sure that made her a penny or two, and she managed international success reaching Number 1 in five different countries with her single Perfect Moment. She co-starred with Hugh Grant in Love Actually and appeared in various TV programmes and adverts. None

Tenerife Weekly - 15th February - 21st February 2013 of which would have earned her peanuts. What on earth did she do with it all? I know the old adage the more you have, the more you spend, but really. Swanning around town with the likes of Mick Hucknall was obviously an expensive past time. I have a guilty pleasure. I have been known to watch Crime Watch, just to see if any of my old school mates are being featured. I also quite like looking at mugshots and trying to read expressions in their eyes. How sad am I? But I was amazed that the mugshot is actually 150 years

old this year. Started by a prison governor back in the 1850’s, they sure don’t look like the ones we see today. Have a look at my report on page 21. I would also like to draw your attention to page 5, I have written about various scams that I have heard about recently here in Tenerife. If you know of any others please let me know so that I can let everyone else know. See you all next week.

An Investigation has been launched after five people were killed after a lifeboat fell off a cruise liner and capsized in the sea during a safety drill. The accident happened on board the Thomson Majesty cruise ship while the ship was docked at the pier of the port of Santa Cruz de La Palma.

The lifeboat fell into the water from a height of about 30 meters with the eight crewmen aboard. Those killed during the exercise were all crew, including three Indonesians, a Filipino and a man from Ghana. A further three suffered injuries, two Greek nationals and a Filipino and received treatment at hospital. About 2,000 passengers are aboard the Thomson Majesty, which belongs to Britain’s Thomson Cruises, but none were involved. Thomson Cruises issued a statement, saying “there was an incident involving the ship’s crew during a safety drill. We can also confirm that there have sadly been five crew fatalities and three crew members injured. One person has been discharged

from hospital and we expect the other two people to be released from hospital imminently. Our thoughts are with the families of those involved. We are working closely with the ship owners and managers, Louis Cruises, to determine exactly what has happened and provide assistance to those affected by the incident. We are also working closely with all relevant authorities and will be co-operating fully with their investigations.” Spanish national broadcaster RTVE said the lifeboat fell while staff were conducting an evacuation drill on the cruise ship. Television images showed a small, white twohulled lifeboat capsized beside the ship. One eyewitness said that passengers were being asked

to stay off the deck. He said the lifeboat was still in the sea, and that he had seen two bodies pulled from the water. The 40,000-tonne cruise ship was due to sail to Funchal, the capital of Madeira but is now being held in the dock. The Thomson Majesty, whose home port is Santa Cruz de Tenerife, offers cruises around the Canary Islands and to the Portuguese island of Madeira regularly docking in Santa Cruz de La Palma. Passengers aboard the ship left the island of Gran Canaria by air, according to reports. It appears that the cruise ship Majesty will remain in the port of La Palma during ongoing judicial investigations into the tragedy.

Cruz Carnaval Kings

By Colin Kirby

The drums were louder, the costumes brighter, and the smiles wider after CD Tenerife saw off promotion rivals Leganés 2-1 to stoke up Carnaval fever in Santa Cruz. Arriving on a wave of good form Leganés were expected to be the biggest challenge of the season but Tenerife showed character and determination to come back from a saved penalty and a 1-0 deficit to stretch their table topping lead to seven points. Hangovers were brushed aside and blue and white scarves and shirts mingled with bizarre fancy dress as a bumper 9,144 crowd watched a tight first half unfold. Containment and frustration worked well to take the sting out of the visitors and the division’s top scorer Dioni. Tarantino and Bruno dominated the heart of the home defence and Cristo Martin was the creative spark in midfield and unlucky to see his early shot go wide. Ruiz found a way through but lacked accuracy for the away team but Falcon was the busier keeper with Aridane a constant threat up front. Nico replaced a struggling Chechu before the half hour mark and Bruno kept forward Pirez on a tight lead. Suso was keen to tear into Leganés on the right, forcing Vega to make a crude tackle to halt his progress. The half time

mood was upbeat as Tenerife tends to be more adventurous in the second half, some of the costumed antics at pitch side added to the party spirit and it was time for the main course. Suso blasted a clear chance high, Cristo Martin broke on the right before putting a long shot over the bar and Aridane was blocked by defender Corona – all three moves cranked the crowd volume up. Aridane pushed again and Victor Gomez responded with a foul and a sending off for a second booking. The resulting penalty should have opened the scoring, Aridane fired low but Falcon picked the right way to dive and saved then after 63 minutes Tarantino made a bad tackle and let Dioni in for the first time in the game and he finished well to take the lead– definitely not in the script. Another wave of noise from the terraces lifted Tenerife and a deep pass from Moyano

found Cristo Martin who unleashed a classy solo finish to level the scores. Tarantino was replaced by Guillem Marti and his presence again inspired the team, this time a break from the right found Aridane who lashed the ball into the net for a 74th minute lead. By now there was not a fancy dressed bottom attached to a seat or a still pair of high heels as the Carnaval anthem Chicharrero de Corazon throbbed loud around the stadium. Guillem really should have beat the keeper for a third goal but with Leganés leaving it late to show any urgency Tenerife just had to play out the last few minutes. Even goalie Falcon joining the visitors attack in injury time couldn’t undo the good work; the final whistle brought wild approval from the crowd before many of them filed down into the city for a right royal celebration.

Saida Prieto has been released from the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Virgen del Rocío hospital. She is now fully conscious, is aware of what happened to her, knows where she is, and is eating solid food. She also knows that she has a “critical prognosis”, and the hospital is being extremely cautious and attempting to avoid creating over-optimism. Medics say that her seconddegree burns are deep, and that these, together with the third-degree burns she suffered, mean that she will remain for the time being in the Burns Unit in “critical condition”, with a projected recovery of several months. Sources have stressed that now is the most complicated time and Saida, if she needs it, will receive psychological help. According to El Día, the number of cases in Tenerife of abandoned horses, or animals in a state of malnutrition, is increasing, because of crisis. Horse-riding clubs in the north of the island estimate that it costs around a hundred and twenty euros a month to keep an adult horse, and many owners can no longer afford this. Numerous private individuals and equestrian centres, as well as the Guardia Civil, are reporting cases, and the number of denuncias against owners for maltreating their horses is increasing. national Police have arrested a man for continual swindling since the end of last year, by offering unemployed people with financial difficulties, non-existent jobs with a well-known chain of establishments, in exchange for a fee of eighty to a hundred and forty euros. Agents from the Guardia Civil in the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife have arrested a 46-year-old man, from Gran Canaria, after he tried to bring 25 kilos of hashish to Tenerife. The incident took place as passengers disembarked from a ferry from Gran Canaria. They searched the man’s luggage and found the packages of hashish. The detainee was placed at the disposal of the Court of instruction of guard of Santa Cruz de Tenerife on Wednesday. Police in La Orotava detained two people, one aged 37 and another aged 23, accused of the crime of theft of four bikes that were valued at EUR 5000 from a garage. The two arrested claim that the garage that was open at the time and they took control of the bikes. national Police have issued a warning about the circulation of counterfeit 100 euros banknotes in Tenerife, targeting the Carnival celebrations in particular, although it is thought to be island spread. Traders are advised to check the authenticity of all notes they receive whatever the value. Local police initially detected the movement of the false hundred euro banknotes and National Police have launched an investigation during the last few days. If you do spot a counterfeit, the Police advise you to remain calm, avoid confrontation, and call 091 straight away.

valley of the guanches exploring the mysterious origins of Tenerife’s giants

By Marc Craig

“THE very existence of a white people perpetuating an advanced neolithic Culture in the 14th Century of our era in the extreme SW of the Old World was such an unaccountable oddity that the association of the Canary Islands with Atlantis became quite a logical presumption since the problem entered the field of erudite inquiry.”Anthropologist, Dr Rene vernau. For centuries, the early tribes of the Canaries and indeed the islands themselves have been romantically linked to the legendary city of Atlantis. Are these islands the mountain peaks of an ancient civilisation, forever lost to the ocean depths and are their early inhabitants Atlantean refugees? Or if that seems far-fetched then who are they, and where did these ancient people come from? Since anthropologists discovered remains indicating that ancient Canarians were similar to Cro-Magnon man, “tall to

very tall in stature (some were over 6 feet in height), with the white-and-pink complexion of an Englishmen, and a long head (dolichocephalic) with a broad face and a typical triangle shaped chin. They had big and low orbits with strong eyebrows. The body was strongly built. Their hair ranged from fair to medium brown.” So where did these White skinned giants-so different from the dark, African tribes, really come from? It now seems that the answer lies in the Sahara desert, once a green and fertile land and the centre of a widespread popular culture that predates the ancient Egyptians. This was proven primarily by the discovery of ancient cave paintings, detailed enough to identify fair-skinned,

blond hunters. As the region is now a dry, barren desert, it’s safe to presume at some point the climate changed dramatically, forcing the people to emigrate-which eventually led some of them here. Others would have been integrated into other, darker skinned tribes, but the isolation of these islands would have kept the bloodlines pure and from as early as 500BC , through to the fall of the Roman Empire, the islands were visited but never settled on. Of course nothing lasts forever and In the 13th century the islands were rediscovered, then in 1476, the islands came under the control of Spain with fierce resistance from the native tribes who refused to accept their rule or religion. A long struggle against their new rulers led to the extermination and absorption of the Guanche by the conquerors, and through this, the culture and language of the ancients was eventually lost. So, the last survivors of Atlantis, or ancient immigrants from a Saharan paradise? Either way, next time I look at one of the many statues of the Guanche scattered throughout the island, it will be with respectful eyes.

Life Guard Strike - Update

Arona Ayuntamiento has said that it would be “illegal” to pay the outstanding salaries to the lifeguards because there is no contract between them and the council. The local authority apologised to residents and beach users for any inconvenience caused by the dispute, and said that Arona has always been noted for the excellence of its services, confirmed by the numerous distinctions bestowed on its beaches. The council claimed that it understood the lifeguards’ motives but could not agree with the way in which they were protesting, and stressed that since the award of the contract to a new business was in process, it was hoped that the situation would get back to normal as quickly as possible. This is an Open Letter to Arona Ayuntamiento from Verónica Rodríguez Rodríguez, the Las Vistas lifeguard who is on hunger strike, she has issued it in response to the council’s statement.

On 12 February, the newspaper El Dia published a statement from Arona Ayuntamiento as a response to the “conflict”. We (or at least I) were surprised because for six months of what they call “conflict” they have not previously issued any information to the public about the situation and the minimum services that have been provided in Arona beaches since 9 November 2011. In the face of such a statement full of nonsense and halftruths, I would like to clarify that: The contract awarded by Arona Ayuntamiento in 2009 to Sport & Salvament SLU expired in November 2011 because the Ayuntamiento “forgot” to extend it. Even so, the local authority continued paying invoices until August 2012, the point at which JulyAugust’s bill was withheld because of an embargo imposed by the social security and tax authorities. This means that the Ayuntamiento paid these

authorities instead of the business. It seems that this situation surprised them, because they then decided to stop so as not to take on Sport & Salvament SLU’s embargoes. In July 2012, the employees stopped receiving their salaries. In August 2012, the contract was put out to tender, a competition won by Eulen SL, which renounced the award a month later, in November, because of the “existence of lawsuits that it would have to assume”, and because this would involve great cost. The contract was next awarded to Pro-Activa, which itself renounced the contract on 1 February 2013 for the same reasons. Throughout all this time, the employees of the three Arona beaches, with blue flags – and Las Vistas also with AENOR flag for Universal Accessibility – have never stopped providing the service, always believing, until 15 days ago, in the “Ayuntamiento’s attempts to solve the problem” (as the council says). In view of the strike call, the Council demanded “minimum services” given that this is an “essential public service”. The Department of Employment confirmed this, and so we were “obliged” to provide the service every day without receiving anything in return. They have never bothered even to offer us food and water. Over the last six months we have had no contact whatsoever with the company Sport & Salvament, and the Ayuntamiento, knowing that there was no contract with the company, that it had solvency problems, and that there have been notifications on several occasions from the lifeguard base that they were working in precarious conditions, have not bothered either to replace first aid materials, to clean public facilities, nor to check vehicles whose papers are now months out of date and which cannot make the appropriate patrols since there’s no fuel, let alone transfers to the beaches of Los Cristianos and El Camisón, and cover for the half hour breaks of the lifeguards who are providing minimum services there.

I am “surprised” that for six months Arona Ayuntamiento has not “informed the public” and that they do so now as a result of reports in the press and discussion as a major topic in online social networks, British forums, etc., and that it has not been concerned with the sanitary conditions of a service to the public service that provides in its turn a socio-sanitary and public security service. And as “we now” reveal the truth; they put out a statement where they accuse us of little less than vandalism. This is untrue, and a serious accusation without proof which is punishable in law. Faced with the charge that “we have destroyed Public Facilities” we say this is not true, and that all we have are flags, sheets, and cardboard, and campaign stands. I want to make clear that I (Veronica Rodriguez) have been camping at the lifeguard base since January 29, am on hunger strike, and that I woke up on Sunday to find slogans had been posted. The maintenance staff were deleting “only part” of them, and so I asked why they were not clearing them all. They replied that these were their orders. Then the police arrived to take pictures and

that same night the council issued its statement. It seems particularly “strange” to me. To Arona Ayuntamiento, I say: Break the deadlock now of this situation that only you have caused, and which has already been delayed (now six and a half months). If the service had been rescued in September 2012, after the embargo on Sport & Salvament, the situation would not be so tense now. We have complied with your demands for minimum services, even without the means to come to work: many without car insurance, without fuel, living on borrowed money, credit, not even having food to eat, and with “some colleagues” who are demonstrating peacefully for donations given by sympathetic beach users and tourists. This now violates our constitutional, employment and “human” rights. I also say that the current situation (after three months of strike without a solution) has been reported to the Department of Employment for them to “reconsider the provision of minimum services”. As we understand it, it is ridiculous and somewhat inhuman to demand employees go to work

without being paid for six months” and in the deplorable sanitary conditions in which the service finds itself. In response to your statement I also say that: of the “two people” they mention who are on hunger strike, Marco Luccini passed out on Thursday, his 5th day without eating; he was taken away by ambulance and admitted to hospital for several hours. Obviously at that point he had to abandon the hunger strike. This is further proof that the Ayuntamiento have not been to the lifeguard base not having any idea of how things really are. The employee who remains on hunger strike, now for 15 days, and who is sleeping at the lifeguard base, is me. To “apologize to users and tourists” is well and good, but you have failed in refusing to accept responsibility for the situation of the 18 lifeguards who, without being paid for six months, continue to supply the service. I hope that these clarifications will add to the statement issued by Arona Environment Department. Yours faithfully Verónica Rodríguez Rodríguez. At Playa de Las Vistas, Arona, 12 February 2013

land. Could she borrow some money, which she will pay back as soon as she gets back from her trip? Scam. Someone knocks on your door, particularly if you live in a slightly more remote area, they are desperate, again, to get a relative to hospital, they have run out of petrol and can they please borrow some money so that they can get there. Scam Bar owners should also be aware, a dark skinned gentleman visited a small bar in Las Americas recently. His cash card had been swallowed by the bank machine and he was desperate to get to the North. Was it possible that he could borrow some money and would be back in after a couple of days to repay the money? The request was refused, however the owner suggested that he spoke to some Spanish people over the road that may be able to give him a lift to the north. The man disappeared! Scam

Ladies, I have also heard of couples on scooters that will drive up very close, one of the riders will jump off, using a knife, cut through the strap of your bag and make off. If you are in any way distracted by someone, perhaps asking for di-

rections please be aware that they may have someone with them who is intent on stealing from your bag. It seems obvious, but keep your bags close to you, never leave them on a seat, where they can be easily snatched.

There are also police warnings about counterfeit 100 Euros notes that are now in circulation. It is not just in Tenerife that these crimes exist, it is truly worldwide. You need to keep your wits about you.

Scam Alert

It is a well-known fact that when the economy is in trouble, the crime rate increases. We are all aware of shoplifters, pickpockets and muggings that, unfortunately, happen worldwide, but what are possibly less known are the scams that are around.

Tenerife Weekly has been informed of some recent scams that I wanted to warn you about. They all have a similar theme running through them. A woman is parked in a supermarket car park, with a small child, both of which are crying. After asking what the problem was, the “lady” informed the would-be Samaritan, that her daughter is extremely ill, needing hospital treatment. The mother has run out of petrol and cannot get to the north of the is-

wigan in Twitter picture row

WIGAn captain Gary Caldwell has apologised to fans after the struggling club’s players posted pictures online of themselves relaxing by the pool during a sunshine break to Tenerife. Latics supporters were furious after seeing the players catching some sun even though the club is languishing in the relegation zone. The outcry forced Caldwell to say sorry, although he insists Roberto Martinez’s men are being put through their paces during the trip. He said: “We realise that one or two pictures of players lying by the pool that appeared on Twitter may have came (sic) across as disrespectful to our supporters. So we have decided ourselves as a group to take them down to avoid confusion. I can assure each and every one of our fans that the players are totally committed and focused on the fight to keep our club in the Barclays Premier League.” Caldwell added: “Like many other teams at this time of year, we have travelled abroad to undergo a warm weather training camp. When we go away on trips like this, it helps breed the sort of spirit that got us through last season and will help this one too. It’s always worked for us.” Roberto Martinez is hoping the winter break will have the same effect as a year ago and push Wigan on to safety. As they have no game this weekend while they wait to discover who their FA Cup opponents will be, they have

taken advantage of a free weekend by jetting out to Tenerife. They did the same thing last year in Oman and on their return they went on a fine run of form, picking up 24 points from the remaining 39 to clinch Premier League survival. Something similar could be needed again and Martinez hopes the trip to Tenerife will inspire them. “Whenever we’ve faced the final third of the season, we’ve always arranged these trips which help us to clarify certain concepts, give players

individual attention because you are with them every second of the day and at the same time let the group set their own targets and aspirations,” he said. Oman was a very important point in our season last year, and helped us to go into the final nine games picking up seven victories. Two years ago we visited La Manga with similar results, achieving a clear focus for the final stage of the campaign, and even in my first year at the club we took time at Carden Park in Cheshire.”

Mum Wins £37.000 For Ruined Holiday Sylvia McNicholl, 49, from Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, was on the first night of a two-week family holiday in May 2008, when she slipped on a pool of water. She fell backwards and hit her head on a cupboard door, leaving her unconscious and requiring stitches. The water had come from an air conditioning unit, which was not properly maintained, at the Fanabe Costa Sur hotel in Tenerife. Mrs McNicholl, who was on the trip with her husband Patrick and their son, said the accident has had a lasting effect as she suffered painful headaches and dizziness afterwards, and even now has a limited sense of taste and smell. Travel lawyers Irwin Mitchell helped her secure a £37,000 settlement from tour operator Thomas Cook for her pain and suffering, the cost of the ruined holiday, as well as a contribution towards her loss of earnings and care needs. Mrs McNicholl said: “One minute I’m getting up to help my son; the next I’m on the floor barely conscious with blood rushing from my head. It was a really nasty injury but it could have been so much worse, the holiday was ruined for me and it’s had quite an impact on my life generally.” Irwin Mitchell said it obtained evidence from building experts that the hotel did not have proper records regarding the maintenance of the air conditioning system as required under Spanish law. Laetitia Fouquet, who represented Mrs

McNicholl, said: “Unfortunately the family’s two-week holiday was ruined on the first day and Sylvia suffered head injuries which continue to affect her now. Thankfully we have now been able to se-

Mainland News In Brief A gang of four who specialised in extortion and violently robbing business owners in Alicante have been sentenced to three years in prison. In one of the robberies at Playa de San Juan, they attacked a man in a car park outside his home and forced him to let them into his home, from where they stole forty thousand euros and a luxury mobile phone worth five thousand euros. Recently, they kidnapped a woman in the center of Alicante, but a neighbour heard her screams as they tried to enter her home and called the police.

An Irishman was among a group of suspects being held in Spain as part of an operation into international drug trafficking. The man was arrested with two Dutch nationals and two Spanish nationals near Alicante in southern Spain. He is in his mid-50s and from Drogheda, Co Louth. Security sources say he is a truck driver and is suspected to have been part of a plan to transport a consignment of cannabis to Ireland via a car ferry in his truck. An investigation has been launched into how a twelveyear-old Belgian boy boarded a flight from Brussels to Spain alone. The child passed security without a boarding pass or ID. His parents reported him missing on Thursday, but it wasn’t until Saturday that he was found by a police officer at Malaga airport. Questions are now being asked of Brussels airport and the airline Jet Air about security check failures. The airline and airport security services are studying CCTV footage to find out how he managed to board the flight. The reasons why the boy took the flight remain unclear, but according to his mother, the boy ran away after a dispute with one of his teachers. In the second quarter of this year, the Valencia health department is to begin a pilot programme with twenty four health centers which provide emergency attention, to allow foreign tourists temporarily in the region, who are without health service or insurance cover, or a European health card, to receive attention and be charged for it on the spot. Six of these centers involved will be hospital emergency units, due to the large numbers of tourists in their areas, at Marina Baixa, San Juan, Elche, Vinarós, Castellón and Gandia. Andalusia has been chosen to try out a pilot programme for electricity installers to voluntarily carry a certification card, to avoid fraud and guarantee the easy identification of their companies by consumers and ensure quality service, and secure contracting. This self-regulation scheme will be audited annually by Aenor, and is aimed at fighting against false or unqualified installers, as well as fightimng the black economy in the sector. It is supported by the ministry for industry, tourism and business and numerous other organizations and associations.

Beckham Supports Teammates

David Beckham joined up with his Paris SaintGermain teammates for the Champions League game at Valencia on Wednesday, but didn’t touch a ball. AA Coach Carlo Ancelotti confirmed that his new signing Beckham would not takepart in the match for the last-16, first-leg tie. “Beckham will watch the match,” said the Italian who is one of the few men to win the European Cup as a player and coach, both times with AC Milan. Since joining the club on the eve of the transfer deadline, Beckham has been training in London with PSG coaching staff before making a speedy trip to New York at the end of last week.

While he will play no part in the Champions League tie, he did participate in his first full training session with the club, in Paris, and could play

in the league match against Sochaux on Sunday. Central defender Mamadou Sakho is set to play against Valencia following

the birth of his baby girl in Paris. “Sakho’s girl was born on Monday and she is called Aida. He will play,” confirmed Ancelotti.

who are affected, 360 are employees at the Madrids Barajas airport, 470 belong to ‘other airports’. 40 other people belong to the cargo department, 390 from Iberias ‘commercial department’ and 150 staff in ‘finance’. The same workers union sources explained that dismissals also affect about 550 employees in the maintenance division and

over 70 people in the Human Resources department. Iberia had initially suggested a reduction of 4,500 jobs but announced on Tuesday their new plans to their employees, union representatives and the Ministry of Employment and Social Security. Starting from Tuesday, Iberia and the unions had a consultation period of 30 days to negotiate. The news comes after three months of negotiations between Ibera and union representatives and in which the company has offered alternatives to achieve profitability targets without resorting to layoffs. Iberia recalled that between 2008 and September 2012 the company had lost over €850 million, which forced them to take “drastic” ‘cost reduction’ and ‘improvement measures’ for the airline to d be sustainable. Despite the announcement, the company says it has the “best position is to reach an agreement” and that it will attend all meetings with union representatives, despite the workers union’s announcement of a 15 day strike. The company has requested that the unions “leave the customers out of the infighting” as things have to be resolved “at the negotiating table and not through strikes that aggravate the losses of the company.” Iberia has said that it will “put all measures in their power to mitigate the effects of strikes in February and March”.

Iberia Starts Dismissal Process

The British Consul in Alicante, Paul Rodwell, has met with the Provincial president of the Spanish Red Cross, Emilio Bascuñana Galiano, to discuss how to work together to support vulnerable Brits. The Red Cross representatives were very interested in hearing about the different English speaking associations in the area, and how to work more closely with them, in areas with a high percentage of British nationals on the padrón. They agreed that by working together with these charities, they would be able to offer better support to English speakers. A court in Malaga has imprisoned, with bail of fifty thousand euros, the driver of the vehicle involved in an accident at Campillos on Sunday, in which two cyclists were killed. The 21- year-old man is accused of murder by careless driving. The two victims, aged 34 and 55, were from Ronda, and well known members of the local cycling club. The local council decreed two days’ official mourning on Monday and Tuesday A British couple whose home in Vera, Almeria, was demolished five years ago following a failure in the admin process, have been given partial justice. The National Court has ordered the ministry for justice to pay Helen and Leonard Prior damages of thirty thousand and eighty euros, as the building licence was declared invalid by the Almeria court, but they weren’t notified, and didn’t find out until they received a demolition order two years later. This sum will at least help them to defend their interests. The cost of their home is still the subject of further legal wranglings.

The Spanish airline Iberia has started procedures to dismiss 3,807 people - 19% of its current workforce and has asked workers unions to cancel the announced 15 day strikes in protest of the dismissals. According to union sources, the depart-

ments most affected would be the ground staff, about 2,640 people, cabin crew, around 760 staff, and pilots, about 320. The dismissals are scheduled to take place between 14th March and 31st December 2013. From the ground staff

Even better news is that bamboo fabric require less frequent washing, it needs no more than a 30˚C wash

and dries in half the time of cotton. Tumble dry low and remove from dryer as soon as it stops to avoid unnecessary creasing. The only place that actually stocks these delicious items is Antiquities Tenerife in Las Chafiras. The have stock in three different colours, soft brown, grey and aubergine and at the moment they have an offer for one bath towel and a hand towel for just 15,00 Euros. AS spring approaches and the days are getting longer, people find excuses to celebrate love and be romantic; the animals of Loro Parque also are honouring Saint valentine, starting the stage of courtship. Cupid comes to all, and curious indeed are the courtship behaviours that the dif-

ferent species show, with more intensity at this time of year. Some prepare their nests, others perform their rituals and demonstrations of force, while the turtles are more romantic with their “pampering and cuddling” to delight all visitors to the most beautiful park in the Canary Islands.

Euro Vegas One Step Further

It has been revealed that the first phase of the controversial, much talked about, multi-billion dollar casino and hotel complex that Spaniards are calling “EuroVegas” is scheduled to open in 2017 in the Madrid suburb of Alcorcon. The resort could bring tens of thousands of new jobs, however, opponents say the Vegas-style resort would create only low-skilled and low-paying jobs; there are also concerns that the resort would attract organized crime. At a news conference, Las Vegas Sands chief operating officer Michael Leven said that he is confident of securing financing for the first

phase of the project, which would cost approximately $9 billion and include 12,000 hotel rooms. Las Vegas Sands is financing 40%, of the cost of the first phase, and Leven said he has “assurances from many banks” about the remaining 60%. An aide later revealed that no contracts have been signed as yet which may be because Las Vegas Sands must still formally compete to win the right to build the development through an open public bid process. That process opens in March with the results announced by September. If the company does win the bid, ground breaking could begin by the end of 2013. Leven said the first phase could generate some tens of thousands of jobs, based on the company’s experience at its similar resort in Singapore.

Vodafone has launched the Google Nexus 7 tablet with 3G in Spain. The model on sale has 32 GB of internal memory, 7-inch screen, is equipped with a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, a 1.2 MP camera with video recording in HD, 1 GB of RAM and runs on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) OS.

Orange Spain has launched a business tariff which includes minutes for international calls and roaming calls. Orange Spain has a presence in 35 countries around the world and roaming agreements with 500 operators worldwide.

VODAFONE Launch

A company spokeswoman later reiterated that the entire $22 billion project, when completed over 20 years, could create 250,000 jobs. Las Vegas Sands’ CEO Adelson has built the company into a global developer of gambling, entertainment and convention resorts. It owns The Venetian and The Palazzo gambling resorts in Las Vegas, Nevada, and has expanded into Asian markets, including resorts in Singapore and Macau. Last September, Adelson announced that he’d chosen Madrid, instead of Barcelona, as the site for the project in Spain. That set off huge debates over which of three potential locations in the Madrid area would get the contract. Las Vegas Sands had previously said that the resort’s access to Madrid’s international airport was a priority,

but Alcorcon and the airport are located on opposite sides of city centre. Spanish authorities are considering rail links between the airport and the resort, although such a plan would require input from Spain’s national government.

Another detail being worked out is whether visitors to Madrid’s “EuroVegas” resort will be able to smoke; the habit is commonplace inside the large casinos on the Vegas Strip. Spain has strict nosmoking laws in public places and the national government

11

would have to grant a special waiver to allow smoking in the casino resort. Spain’s capital may not be worrying Monaco’s famed Monte Carlo casino, but Madrid hopes to muscle in on Europe’s appetite for gambling.

Peterborough Women Rewarded By Spain’s King

The King of Spain has given his seal of approval to two women from Peterborough who help to keep the memory of Katharine of Aragon alive. King Juan Carlos awarded a prestigious decoration, called the Encomienda of Isabel la Católica, to Daphne Heisser and Diana Howden, at Peterborough Town Hall.

Mrs Heisser, president of the Peterborough Hispanic

Society, and Mrs Howden, its secretary, received their awards for decades of promoting Spanish culture in the city. The medals were presented on behalf of the King by Ambassador Federico Trillo-Figueroa. The badges of honour are age-old rewards for exceptional work done to promote Spanish heritage, and must be personally signed-off by the King. Councillor Matthew Lee, deputy leader of Peterborough City Council and cabinet member for culture, recreation and strategic commissioning, congratulated

the pair on their honour. He said: “This year’s Katharine of Aragon Festival was a wonderful event, which helped school children learn more about their city’s history and for Peterborough to build stronger ties with our friends from Spain. It was also a real pleasure to see the Peterborough Hispanic Society receive its honour from the Spanish Ambassador, on behalf of King Juan Carlos I of Spain.” Spanish officials praised the women’s efforts in helping the city remember Katharine, the Spanish princess and first wife of Henry VIII, buried at

Peterborough Cathedral in 1536. Mrs Heisser was instrumental in the twinning of Peterborough with the Spanish city of Alcala de Henares, birthplace of Katharine, in 1986. The 91-year-old retired languages teacher, who lived in Madrid for many years with her family, said she was delighted with the royal medal and signed certificate: “It was so nice to have been instrumental in this international friendship between Peterborough and Spain. My children and grandchildren were tickled pink.”

iSlaMiC TerroriST arreSTeD in Spain

A MAn suspected of being an Islamic terrorist was arrested by Spanish police in valencia, according to the Interior Ministry. The Moroccan suspect, Mohamed Echaabi, considered a “lone wolf” was planning targeted killings and other attacks in Spain and elsewhere in Europe, the ministry said. Echaabi is considered by police to have a profile similar to that of Mohammed Merah, the self-styled al Qaeda jihadist who authorities allege killed seven people in Toulouse, France, in March 2012. After a 32-hour standoff, Merah was killed by police in his home. Echaabi, arrested last Thursday, had been under surveillance for some time, the ministry said in a statement. He was recruited by terrorist networks and educated himself via the Internet, it said. He is alleged to have planned “to commit terrorist actions against rel-

evant personalities or other objectives in agreement with the doctrine of global jihad, as much in Spain as in other European countries. The ministry said that the man had attempted to acquire firearms and explosives. “Echaabi underwent a process of radicalization in which he acquired firm, extreme convictions that led him to leave Spain and travel to Gaza in 2011 with the goal of carrying out an action of suicidal character against Israeli interests,” it said. In an effort to hide their

radical ideology and blend in with others, such individuals may not follow the precepts of Islam, “which is why it is common that they wear Western clothes, don’t have beards, drink alcohol, smoke or eat pork, all with the goal of passing unnoticed and integrating in the society they want to attack.” That formula for carrying out terrorist attacks requires sophisticated intelligence efforts by international police services to uncover and is espoused by al Qaeda leader Ayman al Zawahiri, the ministry said.

A pro-bullfighting group in Catalonia collected 590,000 signatures on a petition due to reach Parliament on last Tuesday. Backed by the ruling conservative Popular Party, which, incidentally, has an absolute majority, the proposal has guaranteed approval. A cultural commission will then work

on proposed legislation over the coming months. If eventually made law, the bill could be used to overturn the 2011 ban by Catalonia. Bullfighting is no longer as popular in Spain as it was in previous years mainly due to the economic crisis and changing tastes.

Medical Treatment In Spain Investigation

A

report has drawn attention to allegations that some hospitals in Spain are refusing European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs) which entitles British travellers to medical treatment. The International Travel Insurance Journal (ITIJ) investigated claims that holidaymakers have been forced to provide travel insurance or credit card details to cover medical costs. More than 12 million British nationals visit Spain each year and, says the report, there is confusion around what is and what isn’t covered, and in which hospitals.

According to the NHS website, the EHIC, which replaced the old E111 in 2006, gives travellers access to ‘state healthcare at a reduced cost or sometimes for free’, in

all European Economic Area (EEA) countries. The ITIJ quoted the European Commission (EC) website’s information about Spain: ‘Public hospitals offer treatment free of charge. Make sure you show your valid European Health Insurance Card on admission, otherwise you will be charged as a private patient. Costs incurred for private treatment are not refundable.’ The report said that while there are ‘provisos’ under which treatment is offered in the Mediterranean country, ‘it’s clear that the expectation is that emergency treatment in public hospitals should be available to cardholders completely free of charge.’ Under the EHIC scheme, the cardholder’s home country will pick up all or some of the costs of the treatment, a process which takes place ‘behind the scenes’, according to the research. But insurance companies are apparently finding that tourists from a number of European countries are facing difficulties. There seems to be confusion around what hospitals are obliged

to offer what, which affects whether or not medical costs are covered. ‘Alongside the public and private hospitals described in the EHIC info on the EC website (“hospitales publicos” and “hospitales privados”), the Spanish health system boasts numerous “hospitales concertados”, which are privately owned, but provide public services under contract to regional state authorities,’ the report added. The ITIJ quoted an EC spokesperson as saying that ‘hospitales concertados’ should accept the EHIC. Although, according to the MSSSI (Spanish Ministry of Health), the situation ‘may be less clear cut’. British tourists are recommended to have both private travel insurance and an EHIC when travelling on the Continent. That means, in the event of an EHIC card not being accepted, travellers could face a large medical bill. A Foreign Consulate Office (FCO) spokesperson said: ‘Both the FCO and the Department of Health are aware of cases in Spain where tourists have been asked to pro-

Over 55’s Medical Risks

Visitors to Spain could face a bill for thousands of pounds for medical treatment if they are taken ill or injured whilst staying with friends and family, the Foreign Office has warned. Yet one in ten over 55-yearolds admit that they sometimes fail to take out travel insurance before going on holiday - even though more than half suffer from a medical condition.

Research for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office reveals that a third, 35%, of over-55s who sometimes fail to take out travel insurance do so because they are ‘only going on a short break’. A quarter, 27%, claims it’s too expensive, whilst nearly one in five, 18%, thinks they don’t need insurance because they are visiting friends or family. Many

also think they can avoid buying a policy because they are covered by their bank. Equally concerning is that one in five, 21%, who do have travel insurance then risk invalidating it by failing to declare an existing condition because they are on medication to manage it. Some 15% admit they wouldn’t update their insurance policy if they developed a medical condition or were prescribed new drugs for an existing condition. Every year around 5,000 British nationals, including over-55s who have failed to take out insurance cover or have invalidated their policies, find themselves seeking assistance from consular staff in Spain. Some end up with life-changing bills of many thousands of pounds for expensive medical treatment or specialist repatriation to the UK. Mark Simmonds, Minister for Consular Policy, said: “‘It won’t happen to

FCO ADVICE

If you are visiting Spain, you should obtain a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before leaving the UK. The EHIC is not a substitute for medical and travel insurance, but it entitles you to state provided medical treatment that may become necessary during your trip. Any treatment provided is on the same terms as Spanish nationals so if a Spanish national is required to pay a fee towards their treatment, you would also have to pay the same fee. You should produce your EHIC prior to treatment. If an EHIC cannot be produced at the time of receiving care, the hospital may request payment up front. The EHIC will not cover medical repatriation, on-going medical treatment or non-urgent treatment. Private hospitals will not accept the EHIC and will ask you to pay for your treatment, or to provide evidence of adequate insurance. You should also make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad and repatriation. If you are referred to a medical facility for treatment you should contact your insurance/medical assistance company immediately. vide travel insurance instead of their EHIC. me’ or ‘I’ll be fine’ are risky assumptions to make when deciding whether or not to take out comprehensive travel insurance. Our consular staff around the world deal with thousands of cases each year that prove that things can and do go wrong. “Being prepared can mean the difference between the holiday of a lifetime and a holiday from hell. Being unwell abroad is stressful enough without the added pressure of having to find thousands of pounds to pay for treatment.” Dave Thomas, Consular Regional Director for Spain, added: “If you have over-55s visiting you this year,

tell them to get insurance before they travel. Taking out a comprehensive policy and declaring any medical condition may be an added expense but it’s a small investment compared to what you could end up paying if something goes wrong.” A spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers said: “Travel insurance is a must for all holidaymakers. Policies are widely available for people of all ages, but the insurance industry recognises that some older people need help finding cover. Under the Age Agreement which we developed with the Government and British Insurance Brokers’ Asso-

ciation, older people who are unable to find cover at the first firm they approach should be directed to an alternative provider who will be able to offer insurance, or to a signposting service.” Foreign Office Alert “All British visitors to Spain, including over-55s, also need a European Health Insurance Card, known as an EHIC. It is free and you can apply on the NHS website http://www.nhs. uk/NHSEngland/Healthcareabroad or by calling 0845 606 2030. If you then have an accident or become ill, you can get the necessary stateprovided medical healthcare at reduced cost or sometimes free. But it is very important to realise that an EHIC does NOT cover all your medical costs, private treatment or repatriation to the UK. You still need travel insurance to ensure you are fully covered for all eventualities. “Many people think an EHIC is enough and don’t take out insurance. They will greatly regret it when they are forced to pay thousands of pounds for an air ambulance back to the UK or have to pay for extra accommodation to stay in Spain to look after a hospitalised family member or friend they are travelling with.”

British Consulates are unable to:

• Get you better treatment in hospital than is given to local people. • Provide medical repatriation or cover the costs of medical bills or repatriation. • Pay any other bills or give you money. • Make travel arrangements for you.

An assistant chef who worked at a traditional cider house called El Lavaderu in Gijón,the largest city in the Asturias, Spain, has been arrested and charged with 14 counts of attempted murder. It is alleged that he tried to poison his colleagues. The man, aged 55, who had worked at the restaurant for seven years had apparently struggled with alcoholism, and allegedly been introducing calcium cyanamide into the staff meals at the staff restaurant for over a year. Calcium cyanamide is used to treat alcoholism, and can “provoke nausea, dizziness and palpitations if mixed with alcohol and can have fatal results if taken long-term.” Some media reports have stated that the suspect was poisoning food, but the current manager of the establishment, Juan Luis Alfonso Alonso, has spoken out to clarify that the suspect was

actually contaminating his colleague’s drinks. He also says that he was the one who brought the matter to the attention of the authorities last October. The owner of El Lavaderu, Florentino Pérez, says he

suffered from the poisonings but never thought that his own chef could be responsible. “People loved him,” said Pérez of the man, who had also been involved in several community and non-profit efforts. Peréz

says he has known him for many years. The suspect was sacked from his job a month before his arrest, but that, according to Pérez, was due to a decline in business and had nothing to do with the poisonings.

Seagal Trains gun posse

unDER Siege star Steven Seagal has been recruited to train a volunteer group who will defend Phoenixarea schools against gunmen. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who calls himself “America’s Toughest Sheriff”, appealed to the actor after the Sandy Hook school shooting in Connecticut, which left 26 children and staff dead. Sheriff’s SWAT members acted as gunmen, and teenagers played the part of students during mock sce-

narios involving up to three gunmen. Seagal was there to lead training in hand-to-hand defence tactics, among other techniques, using his own expertise in martial arts. The mock shootout took place on Saturday at a closed school site in suburban Fountain Hills. Arizona Democratic politician Chad Campbell said using Seagal in as an instructor was “ludicrous”. “Steve Seagal is an actor. That’s it. Why don’t we also have Clint Eastwood and Chuck Norris and Bruce Willis come out and train them too while we’re at it,” he complained. The Maricopa County volunteers dress in uniforms and

drive marked vehicles, with some trained deputies who are authorised to carry guns. They only go onto school grounds if they spot danger. But even without the Hollywood association, the scheme had already attracted criticism. Andrew Sanchez, a local town councillor said he wants nothing to do with the posse patrols. “We are paying him to have certified deputies here, not to bring a circus and not to use our town as a political platform,” he said. “Why would people complain about my posse being in front of schools to act as prevention?” Sheriff Arpaio argued back. “I want eve-

ryone to know about it for the deterrence effect,” he added. Seagal was already a volunteer posse member in Maricopa County. He has also

Union, Nato, the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organisation. The UK Government’s legal opinion was written by Professor Alan Boyle, of Edinburgh University, and Professor James Crawford, of Cambridge University. Alistair Darling MP, the former chancellor and leader of the pro-Union ‘Better Together’ campaign, said: “This is a formidable legal opinion from two internationally respected lawyers. Their opinions have to be taken very seriously and they just can’t just be dismissed by the nationalists. Again, it begs the question where is the advantage to Scotland of breaking its links with the rest of the UK, losing influence as well as all the other economic advantages that come from being together? It’s high time the nationalists told us the basis of their increasingly discredited claims.” Scottish Secretary Michael Moore will launch what Down-

ing Street describes as a series of ‘Scotland Analysis Papers’ in a speech in Edinburgh. The event has drawn criticism from the SNP-controlled Scottish Government. Scotland’s Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: “This is an act of breathtaking arrogance by this Tory-led UK Government, which completely shatters their claim that Scotland is an equal partner within the existing UK - it will only serve to boost support for an independent Scotland. The fact of the matter is that this is an opinion - no more, no less. Other constitutional and legal experts take a completely different view. For example, Professor David Scheffer, constitutional law expert and former US ambassador, said only recently that ‘the breakup would be viewed as two successor states of equal legitimacy - not size, wealth or power, but legitimacy’ ...this means a continuation for both states.”

pentagon unveils independent Scotland a new State new Medal

THE Pentagon has unveiled a new medal to honour “extraordinary” troops who launch cyber-attacks or drone strike despite the fact they do not risk their own lives by doing so.

The medal is a two inches tall brass pendant that will carry a laurel wreath surrounding a globe with a Defence Department eagle at its centre, attached to a red, white and blue striped ribbon. It will only be given to troops for their role in operations that took place after the attacks of September 11, 2001 but, unlike other military medals, will not require that the soldier performed a courageous physical act that put his or her life in danger. The new medal will be ranked higher than the Bronze Star, the fourth highest combat decoration, but lower than the Silver Star, officials said. Announcing the new ‘Distinguished Warfare Medal’, defence secretary Leon Panetta said it was time to recognise those who play a crucial role in modern warfare with hi-tech weapons far from the frontline. “Our military reserves its highest decorations obviously for those who display gallantry and valour in actions where their lives are on the line, and we will continue to do so,” Mr Panetta told a Pentagon news conference. But we should also have the ability to honour the extraordinary actions that make a true difference in combat opera-

tions.” Operators of unmanned, robotic aircraft and cyber weapons “contribute to the success of combat operations, particularly when they remove the enemy from the field of battle, even if those actions are physically removed from the fight,” he said. The medal reflects a new age of warfare featuring robotic weapons and digital combat. Predator and Reaper drones armed with Hellfire missiles and bombs have been used to kill insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan and by the CIA to go after suspected al Qaeda militants in Pakistan, Yemen and elsewhere. Other robotic aircraft, including the stealthy RQ-170 Sentinel and larger Global Hawks, are used to spy on adversaries from the sky without putting pilots in harm’s way. The military also views cyberspace as a new battlefield and has created a new command dedicated to digital warfare, recruiting and training new “cyber warriors”. Drone strikes have been heavily criticised by human rights organisations but American officials believe they are a crucial weapon in the fight against Islamist militants.

THE uK Government has stepped up its campaign against Scottish independence by questioning the legal status of a separate Scotland. It insists that while the remainder of the uK would inherit more than 14,000 international treaties, an independent Scotland would not. In what it calls an “unusual step”, Whitehall has published legal advice on the international law aspects of Scottish independence. It claims that international precedent dictates that an independent Scotland would become a “new state” and what is left of the uK would be considered a “continuing state”. According to its legal opinion, only the remainder of the UK would automatically continue to exercise the same rights, obligations and powers under international law as the UK currently does, and would not have to renegotiate existing treaties or re-apply for membership of international organisations. Presently, the UK is signed up to thousands of treaties and has membership of international organisations like the United Nations, European

Man Sets Lady Gaga Himself Alight Cancels Tour At Airport

A 19-year-old man, from the Ivory Coast, doused himself in petrol and set himself on fire in front of dozens of travellers and workers at Fiumicino airport, 10 miles west of Rome. Police said he had arrived at the departures area of the airport’s terminal three with a deportation order and had been due to leave Italy. But as he spoke to police he suddenly pulled out a plastic bottle of petrol, tipped it over himself and ran off through the terminal. Officers chased the man, but he then used a lighter to ignite the fuel in front of stunned passengers. One eye witness said: “I was heading to check in when all of a sudden I heard screaming and shouting. The next thing I saw was the police surrounding someone and there was a horrible smell of smoke in the air. People were screaming because no one knew what had happened and I think the first sugges-

tion was that it might have been a terror attack.” Another passenger said: “There was a lot of shouting and police running after someone that was all I saw. There was a smell of smoke and then police were telling us to evacuate the terminal because there had been an incident. It was only when I was outside that I heard a man had set himself on fire.” One policeman grabbed a fire extinguisher to douse the flames and was slightly injured. Paramedics wrapped the man in specialist blankets before taking him away in an ambulance. A spokesman at the Sant Eugenio hospital where he was being treated said he was in a “serious con-

dition with extensive burns”. Officials said the airport remained open and only a small section of the terminal was closed before it reopened after an hour. There were no significant delays for passengers. A Rome police spokesman said: “We are investigating the circumstances of the incident which involved a 19-year-old man from the Ivory Coast. He was due to leave the country after being served an expulsion order but set himself alight. One of our officers was slightly hurt as he tackled him. Sources said the deal had been under discussion since last August when creditors pushed for merger talks so they could decide which earned them a better return: a merger or Mr Horton’s plan for an independent airline. American has been restructuring under the bankruptcy protection and the agreement would apparently mean that its creditors and possibly its shareholders will own 72% of the stock, with US Airways Group securing the rest. If the deal is approved by American’s bankruptcy judge and competition regulators, the new American will have more than 900 planes, 3,200 daily flights and about 95,000

employees, not counting regional affiliates. It would also mean that American, United, Delta and Southwest would control about three-quarters of US airline traffic, which is what worries passenger groups. Charles Leocha of the Consumer Travel Alliance said that with just four big airlines instead of five, it would be easier to raise fares. “The benefits of this deal will go only to the corporations, not to consumers,” he said. Just five years ago, American was the world’s biggest airline but years of heavy losses, totalling almost $15bn (£9.6bn) since 2001, drove it into bankruptcy protection. The company blamed inflated labour costs but its unions accused executives of mismanagement.

merican Airlines and US Airways have confirmed an $11bn (£7.1bn) merger to create the world’s biggest airline. The deal aims to secure loss-making American’s exit from 15 months of bankruptcy protection, and is predicted to save the carriers a combined $1bn (£644m) per year.

The new carrier will keep the American Airlines name but it will be run by US Airways chief executive Doug Parker. American’s CEO, Tom Horton, is named as chairman and American’s current credi-

Lady Gaga has cancelled the remainder of her world tour after as discovered she needs surgery for a hip injury. The announcement was made on Wednesday, one day after the pop superstar complained having to delay some of her forthcoming North America concerts.

A news release said Gaga, 26, has a tear in the labrum, a layer of muscle that helps holds the ball-shaped hip joint in place, in her right hip that would require surgery followed by a recovery

period. The Bad Romance singer told her 34 million Twitter followers earlier that she was suffering from a case of severe joint inflammation called synovitis. Gaga told her “little monsters” she had hurt herself a while ago, but initially tried to cover up the injury. She tweeted: “I hid it from my staff, I didn’t want to disappoint my amazing fans. However after last night’s performance I could not walk and still can’t Over the last month, the injury became worse and she said she was unable to walk following a performance on Monday in Montreal. She followed it up

with another tweet declaring: “I’m on crutches and occasionally using a wheelchair, but I’m okay, I promise!” The tour, in support of her second album Born This Way, began last April in Asia and was one of the biggest money earners of the year, making an estimated $161m (£104m) with an average attendance of more than 31,000, making it the fifthhighest grossing tour. Twenty-one dates until March 20 remained on Lady Gaga’s two-year Born This Way Ball tour schedule. Fans who have already bought tickets for the cancelled shows will receive a refund.

portas pilot fiasco

THE self-styled Queen of Shops, Mary Portas, was commissioned by the government in 2011 to conduct an independent review of the future of British High Streets.

In her resulting ‘Portas Review’, she found town centres around the country were losing their appeal to locals and identified the need to ‘put the heart back into the centre of our High Streets’. She suggested this could be done by making the destinations more than just a place to shop. The government made £2.7m available to run a series of pilots trialling Portas’ recommendations and bids were made from towns around the country. However, one local council awarded £100,000 as part of the pilot scheme has been accused of wasting the money after it spent £1,600 on hiring a man in a Peppa Pig costume. Freedom of Information requests have revealed the 12 ‘Portas Pilot’ towns awarded a total of £1.2million have spent just 12% of their funding. And some councils have

been accused of wasting parts of the £100,000 they were presented with. As fashion chain Republic collapses into administration, putting 2,500 jobs at risk, following the troubles at Blockbusters, HMV and Jessops, retail experts have been angered by the progress of the Portas Pilots. Paul Turner-Mitchell, a director of Rochdale-based retailer 25 Ten Boutique, who submitted the FOI requests, asked why much of the money was still sitting in local authority bank accounts. ‘It’s disappointing that, given this unique opportunity to try something different, many councils have wasted funding on the usual bureaucracy of meetings, expense claims and consultants.’ The FOI requests found Croydon had spent £4,950 of its £100,000, while Stockport, which received an extra £362,000 from the council and other bodies, had spent just £25,800 of its total. John O’Mara, the chairman of Stockport Town Team, said the money was part of a pilot, which was about new ways of working, and things didn’t happen overnight. “‘What’s important is getting

this right, not how quickly we get the money out of the door.” Elsewhere, Dartford Council spent £1,160 hiring a person in a Peppa Pig costume, £317.46 on items from Waitrose, £5,983 on newspaper adverts and £1,317 on surveys. A Dartford spokeswoman said adverts in local

newspapers were used to promote the launch of Sunday trading in the town, a six-month Sunday market pilot, and a bursary scheme for businesses looking to set up in the market. The spokesman said: ‘The council hired Peppa Pig for the day as it’s a proven way to draw in families to events.’

The New York Post first reported the story on Wednesday. The couple are said to have kept the pregnancy a secret, but were recently spotted near their home in Los Angeles with the new-born child, the paper said. “They worked hard to have the baby,” an anonymous source was quoted as saying.

Martin is a former Saturday Night Live cast member and star of films including Father Of The Bride and It’s Complicated. He is also a novelist, musician and comedy writer. He and Ms Stringfield were married in a surprise ceremony in 2007. Guests, including Diane Keaton and Tom Hanks, had only been told they were coming to a party.

www.tenerife-weekly.com A gun battle between former Los Angeles Police Department cop Christopher Dorner, wanted for three murders, and police has ended after fire ripped through the remote cabin where the murder suspect was thought to have been hiding. TV footage showed flames rising from the property in California’s Big Bear Lake area, which also had thick black smoke billowing from it.

The Sheriff’s spokeswoman, Jodi Miller, said charred human remains had been found in the rubble of the burned cabin. Forensic tests will be carried out to determine if the remains are Dorner’s. A law enforcement official said a gunshot was heard before the fire broke out, and the suspect did not come out of the cabin as it was engulfed in flames. Police had urged the fugitive to turn himself in as authorities surrounded the cabin where he was reportedly holed up with an arsenal of weapons. Dorner had earlier exchanged gunfire with federal authorities. San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon told a news conference that a sheriff’s deputy had

horse meat scandal destroys horses which are fatally injured during the Grand National. Peter Boddy, whose slaughterhouse in West Yorkshire was raided by officials this week, is contracted by Aintree Racecourse to remove the carcasses of horses which have been put down. Mr Boddy, known locally as ‘the knacker man’ who is prepared to collect any ani-

mal carcass, is a highly skilled marksman who has even worked for the Queen. Another high-profile client of his was Aintree, home to the best-known race in Britain. Racecourse officials today confirmed that Mr Boddy worked on their behalf, but insisted there was no way that meat from racehorses could have entered the food supply. “The racing industry takes every possible course of action to ensure that horses, fatally injured on a racecourse, cannot enter the food chain,” a spokesman said. “Proactive and considered measures are in place to prevent this, such as passport identification backed up by a sticker on the passport and close liaison with licensed disposal organisations. Aintree Racecourse follows these guidelines to the letter and can confirm that Peter Boddy, who has been mentioned in newspaper reports, is contracted by Aintree to remove carcasses if required. By the time these carcasses are returned to the disposal organisation’s premises they are totally unsuitable for consumption. We are as confident as we possibly can be that no unfit meat ever reaches the human food chain.’ During last year’s Grand National the favourites, Synchronised and According to Pete, were both put down after falling, while four animals died at the 2011 meeting. Mr Boddy’s abattoir in Todmorden was shut down by Food Standards Agency officials on Tuesday along with Farmbox Meats, a facility in West Wales which he allegedly supplied with horse meat.

died of wounds he suffered during the shootout. Another deputy was also injured in the exchange. Dorner, a naval reservist, is suspected of killing a couple on February 3 and then ambushing two policemen early last Thursday, killing one. He is also suspected of injuring another officer in a separate incident. Police offered a $1m (£632,000) reward for information leading to his capture and he was charged, in his absence, with the murder of a police officer under special circumstances that could bring the death penalty. Authorities had focused their hunt for Dorner in the mountainous area since they said he launched a campaign to exact revenge against the LAPD for sacking him. The LAPD, backed by agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, were protecting over 40 possible targets, some of them identified in Dorner’s chilling manifesto, which threatened police and their families, he had pledged to “bring unconventional and asymmetrical warfare to those in LAPD uniform whether on or off duty”. LAPD Commander Andrew Smith had urged Dorner to surrender, telling him: “Enough is enough. It’s time for you to turn yourself in. It’s time to end the bloodshed.”

Frank Lampard Children’s author

Chelsea footballer Frank Lampard has signed a deal to write a series of children’s books, called Frankie’s Magic Football. The midfielder, whose contract at his club runs out at the end of this season, said he first had the idea after reading stories to his children. The 34-year-old has two daughters with his former fiancée Elen Rives. He is now engaged to TV presenter Christine Bleakley.

Publishers Little Brown said the books, aimed at children aged five and over, will follow the adventures of schoolboy Frankie and his football-loving friends, and pet dog Max. Lampard said: “Sport and reading are two essentials for us at home, so I decided to make up my own football stories and adventures. The characters are loosely based

on friends and team-mates I’ve played with over the years.” The first book, Frankie Versus The Pirate Pillagers, will be published in June followed by two more this year and another two in 2014. Lampard’s publishing deal was handled by agents Neil Blair and Zoe King who also represent Harry Potter author JK Rowl-

ing. They said the books were “full of loveable characters on wacky adventures” and destined for “great things”. Lampard is not the first footballer to write fiction Arsenal star Theo Walcott has written a series of children’s books and former England manager, Terry Venables, co-wrote a series of crime novels.

LuXuRy handmade smartphone, worth an extraordinary £7,000, has been launched by British firm, vertu. Its hefty price-tag is due to its titaniumcase, and a screen made of sapphire, which is only “one step down from the diamond, in terms of hardness”. Based in Hampshire, employing 1,000 people, the company released the Ti phone after three years of sales growth and global expansion. Chief executive Perry Oosting said: “This is a new category, if you compare to a lot of other luxury categories that are established, so we are still at the beginning stage. Today we do up to almost £300m in revenue so

Mug shots Celebrate 150 year Birthday

21

B

EFORE everyman and his dog had a digital camera, photographs were such a rarity that people used to dress up for their snapshots. Early photographs show that prisoners were no exception for their mug shots. While their crimes range from stealing spades to conning people while dressed as a vicar, what links them is that the majority are sharply dressed, with ties and buttoned up shirts and neatly combed hair.

The practise began in Bedford Prison more than 150 years ago. It was the idea of Robert Evan Roberts, the governor of the prison in the 1850s, who worried that too many habitual criminals were getting away. The police relied on written descriptions to help capture criminals, but he believed these methods were too unreliable. So he commissioned a photographer to take pictures of offenders, so they could easily be traced if they committed further crimes. At the time he wrote: ‘Photography as an agent in discovering the antecedents of criminals, especially tramps and strangers, is unquestionably a very useful auxiliary and in my opinion should be brought into prison use generally.’ The book of mug shots is held by Bedfordshire and Luton Archives and Records Service - which was the first local record office in the UK and is now celebrating its centenary.

William Flint maker, was sentenced to three years for stealing a purse. She died after just five months in prison. The record book shows how law enforcers would not toler-

George Bennett The book holds portraits and details of about 200 prisoners, just 3% of those in Bedford Prison at this time. They offer a rare insight into the lower classes of the late 19th century, who were rarely photographed. Photographic portraits were expensive so the portraits which usually survive from this time are mainly of the gentry and middle classes who could afford them. Nigel Lutt, archivist of Bedfordshire and Luton Archives and Records Service, said: ‘Commercial photography was very new and only started in the cities in the mid 1850’s, so the prison governor was ahead of his time in exploiting the latest technology. The pictures show us what life was like for the working class at that time and drive home just how hard life was for these people. They bring the prisoners to life in a way that the written word alone cannot do.’

John Robinson

The mugshots include George Bennett, a dapper-looking 23-year-old, who with his neat moustache and slicked-back hair resembled a film star. He had poaching convictions and also assaulted a police constable. According to the prison records he is a butcher, from Bedmont, Hertfordshire, who used the alias of Henry Simpson. It also states that he had lost his little finger and had bad teeth. Another photo shows John Robinson, who could be posing for a family portrait in a hat, jacket, waistcoat and neat beard. The 28-year-old wood turner, was sentenced to four years for stealing, is described as having a scar on his head, large vaccination marks on his left arm and an almondshaped mole on his face. The photo of William Flint, 29, arrested for begging, describes him as having boil marks and ginger eyebrows.

Jane Green Whilst another picture shows George Henry Charles Perry, 32, who was arrested for posing as a vicar to con people and was photographed still wearing his fake dog collar. Labourer Samuel Oliver, 46, was sentenced to 21 days in prison for begging on Bedford High Street and was said to have a ‘ruddy’ complexion and imperfect speech and a lame leg after suffering a stroke. Women are also included in the mug shot book Jane Green, alias Elizabeth Locker, 20, was sentenced to four years imprisonment for stealing and was described as a married stocking weaver with the unflattering note of having a ‘very long face’. Catherine May was a 26-year-old dress-

ate any crime, no matter how small. Joseph Hoorwood, 27, was sentenced to seven years for stealing three spades, while James Knapton, a 22-yearold miner, was sentenced for six years for setting fire to a stack of oats. Henry Johnson was an 18-year-old dealer in engravings, but started adult life in prison after he was sentenced to two years for stealing a purse. Thomas Jenkins, a 39-year-old ship’s cook, who is described as ‘high-shouldered’ was arrested for refusing to give evidence in a murder case. The youngest offender is William Doyle, who was just 17, couldn’t read or write and had a pale complexion. He was sentenced to six years in prison for setting fire to a stack of wheat. Several of the inmates have also been photographed in front of a fake back-drop, depicting a prison cell with an open door - perhaps as a warning to would-be criminals where their future lays. The Bedfordshire and Luton Archives and Records Service was established 100 years ago and provided the blue print for all other local record offices which followed.

Cregan aDMiTS lung Cancer increase MurDer LunG cancer has beaten breast cancer as the most lethal form of the disease for women in the uK, research has shown. Scientists predict that, by the middle of the decade, it will be the main cause of women’s cancer deaths in Europe.

DALE Cregan, the man accused of murdering two police officers in a gun and grenade attack dramatically changed his plea to guilty during the first days of the trial. After initially denying the killings, Dale Cregan unexpectedly admitted the offences after a break in his trial at Preston Crown Court. The court heard last week how the 29-year-old ambushed PCs Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes after making a 999 call to report a bogus burglary from a house in Hattersley, Greater Manchester, on September 18. The jury was told that he opened fire on the policewomen as they approached the front door of the house and that as they lay on the floor; he threw a hand grenade at their bodies. Families of PCs Bone, 32, and Hughes, 23, wept in court as details of the murders were outlined. They heard a recording of the call made by Cregan and watched CCTV footage of the two officers

leaving their police station in response. None of their relatives were in court to hear Cregan admit the murders. Cregan, of no fixed address, continues to deny murdering a father and son in two separate attacks earlier in the year. Mark Short, 23, was shot at the Cotton Tree pub in Droylsden, Manchester, on May 25, while

his 46-year-old father, David, was found dead on August 10 following a blast at a house in nearby Clayton. Cregan also denies four attempted murders and a single charge of causing an explosion, while nine other defendants deny all the charges they face. The trial continues.

New figures show that the lung cancer death rate among women in the UK now stands at 21 per 100,000 women. Lung cancer contests the general trend over falling cancer mortality. Since 2009, the proportion of European men dying from cancer has dropped by 6% and of women by 4%. But deaths from lung cancer have risen by 7% among women since 2009. This year, experts predict breast cancer to kill 88,886 women in Europe and lung cancer to kill 82,640. One of the study authors, Professor Carlo La Vecchia, from the University of Milan in Italy, said: “If these opposite trends in lung cancer rates continue, then, in 2015, lung cancer is going to become the first cause of cancer mortality in Europe.

This is already true in the UK and Poland, the two countries with the highest rates: 21.2 and 17.5 per 100,000 women respectively.” The increased number of lung cancers among women may be due to young women taking up smoking in the late 1960s and 1970s, he said. Among European men, lung cancer death rates have fallen 6% since 2009. However, the disease is still the main cause of male cancer death.

n light of recent revelations the Government has been unable to guarantee that state-provided food does not contain horsemeat.

Therefore meals in schools and hospitals are to be tested for horsemeat as part of a nationwide investigation into processed beef products, the Environment Secretary Owen Paterson has announced. Speaking ahead of an emergency summit with food producers, supermarkets and health officials he was asked if it was likely that school and hospital meals contained horsemeat, said: “We will be testing those as well, alongside products in retailers.” The talks come as the retailer Aldi confirmed some of its ready meals contained 100% horsemeat, while Findus has admitted that it knew its products were affected more than a week ago. Aldi said that two of its ready meal ranges, Today’s Special frozen beef lasagne and Today’s Special frozen spaghetti Bolognese, were produced by Comigel, the French supplier also used by Findus, were found to contain between 30% and 100% horse meat. The company said it felt “angry and let down” by Comigel and that anyone who had bought the affected products was entitled to a full refund. Comigel, whose headquarters are based in Luxembourg, say that the meat was supplied to them by a meat-processing company called Spanghero, based in south west France. The scandal has spread across

continental Europe, with Findus withdrawing various frozen meals from both France and Sweden.

Mr Paterson said that horsemeat in food labelled as beef-products was “completely, totally unacceptable”.

He said he was “determined to get to the bottom” of the matter and to see if “it is gross incompetence

or a serious criminal conspiracy” adding that “retailers are ultimately responsible for what they sell”. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has ordered all British retailers and processors to test all their processed beef products to make sure they are what they say they are. Police have joined in the investigation into the horsemeat scandal. Officers from Scotland Yard have met with the FSA to discuss its probe. Politicians and food safety experts have played down the risk to human health, with Prime Minister David Cameron saying it was not about food safety, but about accurate food labelling. He said the industry would have to work hard to restore consumer confidence. Meanwhile, Labour MP Tom Watson published a letter on his website claiming it was sent by Findus to retailers on Monday, warning that a France-based supplier had said there may be problems with raw materials delivered since August 1 last year. In it, the firm claimed raw materials delivered to a French contractor since August 1 were “likely to be non-conform and consequently the labelling on finished products is incorrect”. The letter added: “The supplier has asked us to withdraw the raw material batches.” Responding to the claims, Findus said they did not know about problems in August and that they first suspected there may be an issue on January 22, when they ordered initial tests. The product recall was ordered on February 2 after further tests had been conducted.

nearly 5,000 people in Thailand are celebrating setting a new world record for the most people dancing with hula hoops simultaneously in one place. Seyda Subasi-Gemici, Guinness World Records adjudicator, said that 4,483 people swung hula hoops to dance music for seven minutes without interruption.

The event drew 5,000 potential hula-hoopers to an open air stadium at Thammasat University, but 517 contestants dropped out after they failed to keep their hoops up. The challenge was organised by the Public Health Ministry’s Department of Health, and aimed at creating health awareness among Thais. The previous world record was set in Taiwan in 2011, when 2,496 participants swung hula hoops in a continuous motion for two minutes. Elsewhere in Thailand, an attempt at the longest continuous kiss started ahead of St Valen-

tine’s Day. Nine couples are locked lips in Pattaya to try and break the previous record of 50 hours 25 minutes and one second, held by a Thai couple. The rule is to lock their lips together at all times in the area provided, 3.2 square feet. They can drink only water through a straw. The referee will also accompany them to the toilets which are specially made for the contest. If their lips part, they will be disqualified. The winners win cash and a diamond ring worth 200,000 Baht (£4,290).

POLICE have announced the results of DnA tests on a new Zealand girl who has twice been mistaken for missing Madeleine McCann; prove that it is not her. British police asked for testing to be carried out to confirm she was not the missing child.

The first sighting was last March and the second on New Year’s Eve. New Zealand police said in a statement that they sent the DNA samples to Scotland Yard officers who are still investigating Madeleine’s disappearance. Detective Inspector Steve McGregor said: “We have received confirmation from Scotland Yard that a DNA sample provided voluntarily from a girl mistaken as missing British girl Madeleine McCann on New Year’s Eve in Queenstown last year does not

provide a match for that of the missing girl. At the time of the sighting, police made thorough inquiries and were completely satisfied that the girl was not Madeleine McCann.” New Zealand police say the unnamed girl’s family has requested privacy. Madeleine was nearly four when she disappeared from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in Portugal’s Algarve on May 3, 2007 as her parents dined at a tapas restaurant with friends nearby. Kate and Gerry McCann, of Rothley, Leicestershire, have campaigned tirelessly for information on their daughter’s whereabouts, battling for a review by the Metropolitan Police, which has now been under way for more than 18 months. Her disappearance has sparked a number of false sightings around the world.

Mandela Granddaughters In Reality TV Show

25

Nelson Mandela’s granddaughters are to star in a new reality television show, Being Mandela, following their lives in Johannesburg. Mr Mandela does not appear in the show, but the anti-apartheid revolutionary, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and first black South African president is often referred to in the show as “Big Grandpa”. At the show’s launch, Zaziwe Dlamini-Manaway and Swati Dlamini, showed the first picture of Mr Mandela to be seen for seven months. He is pictured sitting in an armchair and smiling with his great grandson, Zen, on his lap. The two women also run a clothing range under the name Long Walk to Freedom, named after Mr Mandela’s autobiography of the same name. But the pair denies exploiting the family name. Swati Dlamini said: “We get asked this question a lot. Is this not going to tarnish the name and is this not going to be bad for the name? Our grandparents have always

said to us, this is our name too, and we can do what we think is best fitting with the name, as long as we treat it with respect and integrity.” The two who live a glamorous lifestyle and spent most of their childhood in the US, are the granddaughters of Mr Mandela and his former wife Winnie MadikizelaMandela, “Big Mommy”, who does make appearances in the show. The women say

that 94-year-old Mr Mandela, who was recently admitted to hospital because of a chest infection, is “happy and healthy”. They also said that he would be watching their show, which starts on Sunday on the US channel, COZI TV. “You’ll be interested to know that he loves Toddlers and Tiaras,” said Swati, in reference to a series about child beauty pageants.

male housemates Dolly, Priscilla and Polly, all 17, and youngster 13-year-old Dolores. He said: “Music is a powerful thing, and I would like to believe it has a positive effect on animals, as well as us. It certainly is an experience to play in such a well-known and romantic place as London Zoo.” Scientists have suggested that music can affect animal behaviour and some farmers claim classical tunes increase the yield of milk and eggs from their livestock. But it was not immediately clear whether the French star’s romantic music had any effect on his audience. Clayderman, who is making a recording comeback after more than a decade away, became a huge star in the 1970s thanks to his track Ballade Pour Adeline, one of the biggestselling recordings of all time.

According to the sisters, their grandfather holds the family to high standards and sets rules for when the children should be home and when dinner should start. “He’s a very strict person. Most people wouldn’t think that but he really, really is,” Zaziwe, who is married to an American businessman and has three children, said. They say it was only after Mr Mandela retired from

public life that they started to get to know him. Swati said: “Our grandfather always told us that he belongs to the country and he’s of service to the country and he doesn’t belong to us as a family. And that’s the sacrifice he’s made for the country and that what he’s told us as far as I can remember.” The 13-episode first season follows the two women as they try to carry on the

family legacy while juggling motherhood in Johannesburg. The sisters make an emotional visit to the prison on Robben Island where their grandfather spent 18 of the 27 years he was imprisoned by South Africa’s white-ruled government. Swati, who is not married, is working on publishing the prison diaries that her grandmother Winnie wrote but now cannot bear to read.

Doodles by famous faces, showing their artistic side, including Sir Ian McKellen, Steven Gerrard, Michael Sheen, Joanna Lumley, Lorraine Kelly and Chris Tarrant are being auctioned on National Doodle Day to raise money for Epilepsy Action. More than 1,000 celebrities have taken part in National Doodle Day since it began and members of the public can join them by doing their own doodle. The celebrity doodle eBay auction will run until Sunday, February 17th. Epilepsy Action also invited schools, workplaces and groups to ‘do a doodle, donate a pound’ with the chance of a prize for anyone taking part. Philippa Cartwright, fundraising events manager at Epilepsy Action, said: “National Doodle Day is always fantastic fun and every year we receive lots of wacky and wonderful doodles from celebrities and members of the public alike. Over £250,000 has been raised since the very first event in 2004, and taking just a few minutes of your day to get creative will help people who are affected by epilepsy and their families. Just £6 could support someone newly diagnosed with epilepsy, providing advice and information from our experts when they need it most. Absolutely anyone can

take part so please get doodling with your schoolmates, friends, family or colleagues, or bid on your favourite celebrity doodle. It really will make all the difference in helping us to create a brighter future for people affected by epilepsy.” Epilepsy affects around one in every 100 people in the UK alone and 87 people are diagnosed with the condition every day. Each year Epilepsy Action directly helps over 1.1 million people.

RuPERT Murdoch, chief executive of news Corporation that publishes The Sun is “considering” scrapping photographs of topless women it prints on page 3.

In a tweet, the media mogul said campaigners may be correct in describing the feature as “so last century”. He hinted to his 400,000 followers that it could be replaced with a “halfway house” featuring “glamorous fashionistas”. Mr Murdoch was replying to a tweet from Karen Mason, who attracted the attention of the media mogul with only her 14th post. She wrote: “@rupertmurdoch #nomorepage3 Seriously, we are all so over Page 3 - it is so last century!” A spokesman for campaign group No More Page 3 said: “We’re really pleased that Rupert Murdoch might be thinking of dropping Page 3. It’s down to everyone who signed the petition and supported the campaign. We won’t stop until Page 3 is finally, permanently, out of the paper but his tweet is encouraging.” Within hours of Mr Murdoch posting his message, Twitter was in meltdown with suggestions for what could replace Page 3. One user suggested the page should be dedicated to “young sports stars, musicians, carers, people who hold their communities together, volunteers, rescuers”, whilst another said: “Replace with a good news page. Uplifting and inspiring stories from all over Britain. A nice way to start the day.” No More Page 3, which has campaigned outside News International’s headquarters in Wapping, London, has recruited more than 60,000 people to sign its online petition, demanding an end to Page 3.

James Bulger Mum – The Fight Goes On

Speaking on the eve of the 20th anniversary of her son’s murder, Denise Fergus, whose son James Bulger was just two years old when he was abducted from the Strand shopping centre in Bootle, Merseyside says she has still not achieved justice despite fighting for two decades.

CCTV cameras captured 10-year-old schoolboys Jon Venables and Robert Thompson leading the toddler by the hand. They took him to a railway embankment in Walton, Liverpool, where they tortured him, inflicting 42 injuries before leaving him dead on the tracks where a train severed his body. The two schoolboys were convicted of murder and given life sentences in November 1993. Less than eight years later, in June 2001, the pair were released as well as given new identities. Mrs Fergus says she feels

let down by the justice system and strongly believes a change in the law is needed so killers receive harsher punishments. “They should make them realise what they’ve done is wrong. If they give them a hard enough time maybe they’ll think again before they go on to commit another crime,” she said. “What I’m saying is stop giving them stupid sentences like five or 10 years or if they get a 10-year sentence stop dropping it to five years because of good behaviour. They’ve done bad in the first place to be there. Start giv-

A Little Bit Of Mars

Nasa has announced that the Mars rover Curiosity has cut through rock on the red planet and collected a sample for the first time. Using a drill at the end of its robotic arm, Curiosity bore a hole measuring 1.6cm wide and 6.4cm deep into the rock, generating powder which will be analysed. “The most advanced planetary robot ever designed now is a fully operating analytical laboratory on Mars,” said agency official John Grunsfeld. “This is the biggest milestone accomplishment for the Curiosity team since the sky-crane landing last August, another proud day for America.” The sample rock, named “John Klein” in memory of a Mars science laboratory deputy project manager

who died in 2011, was described as flat and veiny and is believed to hold evidence about “long-gone wet environments,”. Controllers will command the rover’s arm to carry out steps to process the sample over the coming days. Some of the powder will be checked for contamination that may have made it onto the hardware while Curiosity was still on Earth. Creating a tool that could handle “unpredictable” Martian rocks was difficult. “To get to the point of making this hole in a rock on Mars, we made eight drills and bored more than 1,200 holes in 20 types of rock on Earth,” said engineer Louise Jandura. The $2.5bn (£1.6bn) mission, scheduled to last at least two years, will study the Martian environment to prepare for a possible future manned mission. US President Barack Obama wants to be able to send humans to the planet by 2030.

ing them proper sentences, sentences that fit the crime and stop being so lenient on them.” Venables was again jailed in 2010 this time for downloading and distributing dozens of indecent images of children. He is now making a new bid for release. Mrs Fergus is expected to deliver a victim statement in person for the first time to his parole board. She feels strongly he should remain behind bars. She has been concerned that a possible sexual motive for her son’s murder has never been properly investigated. She believes Venables still poses a risk to the public: “I just urge them not to release him because I still believe he is a danger. He’s a ticking time bomb and he always has been. To get away with so much you know someone out there hasn’t been doing their job. He was meant to have been monitored on his release. To build up all those images on his laptop is unbelievable and just proves that he hasn’t been getting monitored at

all. I’m not saying lock him up forever. Until he’s got a stable mind then I think he should be locked up. But I don’t know if he’ll ever get that stable mind.” Mrs Fergus also believes Venables should not be given a second new identity. “If he gets another ID then he’s putting other people in danger because on his release people are going to be aware who moves into their area,” she said. “If someone new moves in on his release then everyone’s going to be pointing fingers and it might not be him, it might be an inno-

cent man.” Mrs Fergus, her husband Stuart and three sons will visit James’s grave on the anniversary of his death. She said she will never stop fighting for justice. “That’s something I’ll never give up. The day I give that up I’ll be letting a lot of people down. All the support that I’ve had over the past 20 years would be undone,” she said. “I’d feel I was letting my family down, and I’d feel I’d be letting James down, I’d be letting myself down. You know if it takes another 20 years I’m going to keep on fighting.”

pope reSignS

POPE Benedict XvI will be the first head of the Roman Catholic Church to resign in almost 600 years, when he officially steps down on February 28th. His departure has

been announced as due to his “deteriorating” health.

The 85-year-old German’s resignation letter said: “After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my

the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognise my incapacity to adequately fulfil the ministry entrusted to me.” Pope Benedict XVI was one of the oldest new popes in history when he was elected in 2005 at

Speaking at a hastily-arranged news conference, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said: “The pope caught us a bit by surprise. We should have a new pope for Easter.” He told reporters a conclave could be held within 15 or 20 days of the resignation and insisted Pope Benedict XVI was not stepping down because of any difficulties in the papacy. Mr Lombardi added that the pope’s vigour had “sadly diminished in recent times”, but praised the pontiff’s “humility and great honour”. The pope’s brother, Georg Ratzinger, said the pontiff had been advised by his doctor not to take transatlantic trips for health reasons, and that he had been considering resigning for months. He said his brother was having increasing difficulty walking and that his resignation was part of a “natural process.” His age is weighing on him,” the 89-year-old said of his 85-yearold brother. “At this age my brother wants more rest.” The final post on Pope Benedict XVI’s Twitter page, sent on Sunday, said: “We must trust in the mighty power of God’s mercy. Reaction to Pope Benedict XvI’s resignation came in from around the world. Father Christopher Jamison, a Benedictine monk said: “My reaction is one of great shock and surprise. He’s reached out very strongly to non-believers and fully recognises that people today won’t necessarily join the church. On his visit to the UK in 2010, people were surprised to discover that he wasn’t a terrible ogre of a man but someone of great wisdom.” Diarmaid MacCulloch, professor of the History of the Church at Oxford University, said the announcement had taken many people by surprise. What’s very noticeable is the sheer disarray around the statement,” he said. “Clearly no one in the upper hierarchy in this country knew anything about it. Normally these things are very well prepared but this hasn’t been. It may be the result of an elderly man reflecting in private and coming to a sudden decision.”

makes us new.” The last pope to resign was Pope Gregory XII, who stepped down in 1415 in a deal to end the

Great Western Schism among competing papal claimants. While there are several papal contenders, there is no obvious

front-runner to take over - which was also the case when Benedict was elected pontiff in 2005 after the death of Pope John Paul II.

Ratzinger is seen with Pope John Paul II in 1979

Former MP Anne Widdecombe described Pope Benedict as a “very decisive character” and said: “If he feels that he can’t do justice to the post, then (this decision) is very typical of him.” He’s given the church stability,” she added. “He was very much an authority figure and he was very, very trusted by church.” Meanwhile, Conservative MP Mark Pritchard, who has met Pope Benedict several times, said he would be a “sad loss” to the Catholic Church. The German government said it was “moved and touched” by the surprise resignation of Pope Benedict, who was born in the country. Spokesman Steffen Seibert said: “The German government has the highest respect for the Holy Father, for what he has done, for his contributions over the course of his life to the Catholic church. He has been at the head of the Catholic Church for nearly eight years. He has left a very personal signature as a thinker at the head of the Church and also as a shepherd.” Meanwhile, French President Francois Hollande said the Pope’s decision to resign was “eminently respectable”.

Mr Bean gets His Mclaren Back

iconic painting vandalised

ACTOR Rowan Atkinson has successfully claimed more than £900,000 from his car insurers to repair his rare and valuable McLaren F1. The claim, thought to be the highest ever recorded in the uK, follows a crash in 2011 on the A605 near Haddon, Cambridgeshire that left Atkinson with a badly damaged shoulder.

Ben Stagg, specialist insurer with RK Harrison, said the quality components used to make an F1 are one reason the repair costs were so high. The highperformance car makes extensive use of carbon fibre and needed specialist care. All modern supercars are predominantly carbon fibre, most Lamborghinis, most Ferraris, and the smallest dent in carbon fibre is a big repair job,” said Stagg. “And part of the engine bay is gold, that’s the best heat conductor. It’s the materials they used compared to everyday cars that make it so expensive.” He said many owners take extreme care of their expensive cars, driving them only a few times a year and only when the weather is absolutely perfect, but Atkinson drives his McLaren extensively. The Mr Bean star told Classic & Sports

Car magazine, which extensively documented the repair work, he believes supercars should be used, not kept in garages. “It depresses me when great cars are hidden away,” he said. “It’s a crime not to use it.” Magazine editor Alastair Clements said Atkinson, 58, should be applauded. “He let us do the story because he wanted other enthusiasts to know that he loves it, that he isn’t just some celebrity with an expensive car, that he’s owned it for 15 years and loved it for 15 years. He’s put it back exactly as it was. He’s a bit of a hero. It’s much more than the value.” Although the insurance claim may

seem eye-watering to most drivers, the last used McLaren F1 sold on the open market went for about £3.5m. After the year-long repair project, it is thought the actor’s annual insurance premium could be as high as £60,000.

The 28-year-old woman was held by an attendant after scrawling “AE911” on Liberty Leading the People, which commemorates France’s July Revolution of 1830, on show in the Louvre’s recently-opened museum in the northern town of Lens. It is not clear what the slogan meant. A specialist art restorer was

being sent to the site but it believed the damage was not significant and could be easily repaired. A prosecutor in the nearby town of Bethune has asked for a psychiatric evaluation of the young woman, who appeared to be “unbalanced”. He said her reasons for defacing the painting were unknown. The picture shows a barebreasted woman personifying Liberty leading the people forward over the bodies of the fallen. She is painted holding the French tricolour in one hand and a bayonetted musket in the other.

yoda......The Movie!!! “THe voiCe” geTS 2nD SerieS revaMp

WHEn I first sat down with the Tenerife Weekly to discuss me doing an entertainment column, someone quipped that I couldn’t just write about “Star Wars” all the time, but no-one (especially me) could have guessed that my childhood favourite would become such huge news again, with Disney making exciting announcements almost daily! Happy days indeed!!

So, here’s the latest big one, After several rumours, Disney has officially announced that as well as the new main trilogy of episodes 7-9, production will soon begin on several “standalone” or spinoffs focusing on already fan favourites and possibly new characters from different timelines. Whilst there is an awful lot of Internet buzz about a possible Yoda movie, the first two to be confirmed are as follows: 1-Han Solo: Origins. This will focus on the smug-

glers early years, set between the first two trilogies, how he became a smuggler and met Chewbacca and would have to feature an actor much younger than Harrison Ford was in the first movie, with the legend himself perhaps appearing as an old Han Solo as a framing device! If that’s not exciting enough the timeframe means there could be multiple appearances from favourite characters (the bounty hunters, Jabba, Darth Vader in full badass mode!), one thing that worries me is who will play young Solo..... Please god, keep an armed and fully operational Death Star on the lookout for Justin (now I wanna be an actor)

Beiber !!! 2-Boba Fett. The mysterious bounty hunter is getting his own “gangsters in space” style flick, time frame could be several, between trilogies or any time during, even possibly after “Return of the Jedi” as although he seemed to get killed off onscreen, the extended universe of comics, novels etc., explains that he escaped that fate- at least I’ll be able to stop having to explain why I’m dressed as a “Power Ranger” on my Facebook profile picture!!! More “Star wars” news coming soon!!- Sorry Ed. - It’s my job!!! (You are forgiven –

ed.)

BBC’s contender to the “XFactor” throne is back soon. The show started extremely well last March with it’s unique “swivel chair” rounds in which the judges, self-involved Jessie “it’s all about me” J, name dropping legend Tom “I’ve worked with everyone me!” Jones, eccentric but hilarious Mega producer Will.I.Am and script frontman and all round nice bloke Danny O’ Donoghue, would listen with their backs to the performer and would punch a button to swivel to face the hopefuls if they wanted to mentor them. This great concept made it the BBC’s most successful new Saturday night show in a decade. However ratings dived once the live shows began and it just couldn’t compete with Cowell’s ITV behemoth talent show “Britain’s got Talent”. This resulted in a planned live tour cancelled due to

poor ticket sales and series 1 winner Leanne Mitchell failed to make the official top 40 with her debut single. However this hasn’t deterred the series producers from coming back bigger and better, the live shows have been streamlined to just 3 episodes with the blind auditions, knockouts (a new section) and battles taking up more of the shows run. Judges will also be given the chance to “steal” one rejected contestant each, a bit like the XFactor’s “wildcard”. What was cringe worthy last year and made great telly was watching has-beens

Just like owners end up starting to look like their pets, it seems the longer you have a feud with someone, the more you start to look like them! It’s obvious that Gaga is heavily influenced/rips off Madge, her occasional Xeroxing of the material girl is what led to several bouts of verbal sparring in the first place, but what’s interesting about this photo is that Madge looks like Gaga, not vice versa!! Either that or we’ve all got it wrong and there is no Lady Gaga and 75 year old Madonna (I know, slight exaggeration) has had so much youth regenerating cosmetic surgery that she IS Lady Gaga, and has to “age up” when she appears as herself!! Stranger things have happened!

wHy i love MuSiC!!

I’ve been a massive Sting fan since the early days of “The Police”, I think Bruno Mars is one of the most talented singer/songwriters of today and I love Rihanna’s soulful voice (and that’s the OnLy reason I watch her videos like I’m hypnotised-honest!). So when Bruno performed “Locked out of heaven”, my favourite song to sing at the moment and one that reminds me a lot of early Sting, I was thrilled when a couple

of minutes in, the legend walked on slapping his bass guitar and joined in the vocals!! The band changed songs to “Walking on the moon” and just when I thought it couldn’t get better Rihanna walks on with Ziggy Marley and they all perform his father’s reggae master class “could you be loved”!!! google Shares Sale

ERIC Schmidt, Google’s Executive Chairman, plans to sell around 42% of his stake in the internet company over the next year. The 57-year-old wants to sell off 3.2 million shares which are currently worth $2.5bn (£1.58bn).

The plan was revealed in a stock trading plan filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. It allows Schmidt, who was Google’s CEO until 2011; to spread the sale over one year to reduce the effect that it could have on the share price. The documents reveal that he owns “approximately 7.6 million shares of Class A and Class B common stock”, a 2.3% overall stake in the company. After the sale Schmidt would still be left with stock worth another $3.5bn (£2.2bn).

A Google spokeswoman would not comment on the sale, but Schmidt has been gradually reducing his stake recently. In February 2012, he also filed one-year plan to offload another 2.4 million shares. Schmidt is currently ranked 138 on the Forbes list of global billionaires with a net worth of $7.5bn (£4.75bn) He passed control of the world’s biggest search provider to Larry Page in April 2011. Page and his co-founder, Sergey Brin, are the only

people who own more of Google than Schmidt, each have about an 8.5% share. There is speculation that the sale could be part of a move by Schmidt to ‘diversify’ his interests. Recently he embarked on a controversial “personal” trip to North Korea where he urged the secretive state to allow its people access to the internet. And last week he again made headlines claiming that China runs the most “prolific and sophisticated” computer hacking operation in the world.

He was granted the patents in 1998, five years before Facebook first appeared. Surfbook was a social diary that let people share in-

formation with friends and family and approve some data using a “like” button, according to legal papers filed by Fish and Richardson. The papers also say Facebook is aware of the patents as it has cited them in its own applications to patent some social networking technologies. Also cited in the same legal claim was another social media company called Add This. Facebook said it had no comment to make on the lawsuit or its claims.

Sharples in Session By John Sharples

Pretty Polly

Loro Parque is always in the press, usually because of the birth of one of a myriad of animals. They rarely get any bad press and it is easy to see why.

Horse Meat Scandal

It is a scandal, not because it is horse meat that people have been eating, but because horse meat isn’t listed on the ingredients label. The law clearly states that we have a right to know what the main ingredients of our food are.

For me, it goes beyond that. Just the name, “horse meat” is enough to put me off. We don’t call it “cow meat” or “pig meat” or “sheep meat”. Baby cow meat is called veal and deer meat is called venison. Horse meat is just plain old horse meat! It puts me right off. The big issue for me is this. WHAT ELSE IS GOING INTO OUR FOOD? What other big scandals are on the way and

WHY wasn’t this discovered long ago. It has been going on for quite some time and the authorities have just come across it. It’s time for someone to pull their finger out. It’s no use just blaming the present government for everything that happens, but it is certainly their job to get it sorted. I hope they do it without haste and stop horsing around!

Widows Night

I visited the park last week with a friend. We were stunned by the cleanliness and friendliness of the place. There was so much to do and the animals all seemed to be happy and clean and well cared for. I am an advocate of zoos and such places. Children are our future and nothing inspires a child like actually seeing or touching an animal. When the little girl sat in a dinghy and was towed across the water by a dolphin, people shed a tear. It was a moving moment in the dolphin show. As the boat went across the lake, another dolphin jumped out of the water behind the boat at regular intervals. It was an amazing sight to see.

If you go, make sure you see the sealion and dolphin shows. They are an absolute must. The Killer Whale “show” was nothing in comparison to what it was a few years ago. I found it disappointing although my friend, who has never visited the park, said it was wonderful to see such beautiful animals up close. The walk through the treetops is an inspired idea, where tropical birds of all kinds fly freely and feed on strategically placed feeders. This is not one of those places where most of the animals are out of view. I loved my third visit to Loro Parque and in a few weeks, my mum will be over, so another visit is on the cards.

Fat Film Fiasco

A body has called for cinemas to sell smaller measures of soft sugary drinks to help people to stay healthy. In a recent study, research found that a large bucket of sweet popcorn has 1,800 calories.

I wouldn’t buy a dustbin full of popcorn or a five litre bucket of coke. However, if I wanted to buy one, I would like to have that right. This is just another case of idiotic molly coddling by people who have nothing better to do. If the government wants people to eat more sensibly and behave more neighbourly, they should put manners and health onto the national curriculum

I had a crazy night out with my friend John in Puerto de la Cruz. It was widow’s night of carnival and everybody was dressed in black. Most of the men were in drag and it was a real blast.

There was a Widow’s Welcome at the Welcome bar, where a coach trip has been put together for the Decades show later this month. The Miss Welcome Widow competition featured men of all sizes and shapes as they competed for the fiercely fought title. Men of all ages and sizes were parading around the town in their female finery and drinking a noggin or two. The party went on into the early hours of the morning and I vowed the next day, never to do it again..... Until next year of course!

Stonebreaker

I have been a sufferer of kidney stones for about 20 years now. I have had official medication from the doctors and it never worked for me.

in schools and make parents take a test on it too. Whilst they are at it that

can teach some of the parents a little etiquette too!

The stones were always discovered when it was too late to blast them whilst they were in the kidney, which meant that they had to pass naturally from my body. This is one of the most painful experiences that a man can suffer and it has been likened by many to the pain that a woman goes through at childbirth. There is

a natural remedy that melts the stone gently and eases the pain. It is a herb that grows here in Tenerife that the locals call “Rompapiedras” or “Stone-breaker”. You can buy the herb from local herbal suppliers. You need to boil the whole bag in a large pan of water. Strain the bits out of the watery liquid and bottle it and cool it in the fridge. Before you go to bed, drink a very large glass of the “tea” whilst holding your nose (That way, you can’t taste it). It is highly effective and I should know, I have used it many times in the past!

fake prince luxury goods auctioned

LuXuRy goods amassed by a health boss in Australia, who faked his position as a Tahitian prince, are to be auctioned. Items include the fake crown belonging to new Zealand-born Hohepa Morehu-Barlow, also known as Joel Barlow; he is due in court in March over alleged fraud worth AuS$16m (£10m). Posing as a Tahitian prince in social circles, Morehu-Barlow enjoyed a lavish lifestyle, living in an exclusive waterfront apartment; he drove several sports cars and had an array of luxury goods at the apartment, all allegedly funded by theft. Queensland health minister Lawrence Springborg said items from the former executive’s estate were to be auctioned in a bid to retrieve the millions he is accused of stealing. “The return of these funds will go a long way in the provision of essential frontline services,” he said. Morehu-Barlow’s riverside apartment sold recently for AUS$5.65m (£3.68m) and around 1,000 items seized from the property under proceeds of crime legislation will

go on sale in Brisbane on March 10. The auctioneers’ catalogue says: “This estate comprises of almost 1,000 lots of the best of luxury goods, furniture, jewellery, electrical items, clothing and accessories, books, artwork, curios and lots more.” Morehu-Barlow’s art collection included works by Australians Brett Whiteley, John Olsen and Arthur Boyd, and he reportedly owned the largest Louis Vuitton accessories collection in the Southern Hemisphere. A fake crown, Hermes saddle, a AUS$95,000 (£62,000) television, a 19th century naval hat, a grand piano, a bottle of French cognac worth AUS$25,000 (£16,000), replica robots, a surfboard and a huge range of luxury clothing are reportedly among the items. Mr Springborg said around AUS$11m (£7m) of the anticipated sales had already been committed to charities covering cancer, stroke, anti-smoking, vaccination and Aboriginal health initiatives. “We are repairing the damage to local health services caused by years of financial mismanagement and lax standards,” he said. “People at the auction can join in and help us turn things around.”

THROUGH THE KEYHOLE By Lynne Leadbetter

Townhouse, La Capitana, El Galeon, Adeje

4 Bedroom 2 bathroom + WC End Corner Townhouse constructed over 3 floors with marble flooring throughout, separate kitchen, large garage, separate utility, wine cellar and large terrace area of 139m2. Interior: 288m2. I would like to give all your readers a small insight into the house we purchased 10 years ago on the southern corner of the town of Adeje from the most renowned builder in the south of Tenerife. This whole complex is known for the quality of the construction and the materials used, as a property developer in England the amount of care taken on the whole project, prompted the purchase of the last plot on the complex. As the director of the construction company had saved this ‘til last, as it was considered the most outstanding house on the complex for one of his relatives, we caught him at a weak moment with a good offer at that time, even his staff were surprised when we completed the transaction. We had purchased our dream home in Tenerife, the work then

really started, air-conditioning was installed throughout, quality light fittings in every room and of course the furniture, as my wife is known in our circle of friends as very quality conscious, nothing but the best will do, we managed to find a very reliable furniture supplier with his eye on the ball regarding the building of his goods. After several months of

hard work, we moved in with a great sense of joy that we had completed the task and now can enjoy our holiday home in full. During the first year, as you can imagine, we started to look closer at things and noticed the terrace had a few stains that no matter how hard we tried, the stains would not come off, so after about 10 seconds of very careful consideration, we decided to cover the area with designer tiles costing in the region of 10 thousand euros but nothing is too good for my little piranha, only joking, she is the love of my life! Also, about 3 years ago, the guest bathroom was completely renovated with an open shower, new tiles and fittings with a rainfall shower in a very contemporary colour. Our house is on the southern end of Adeje town opposite some very outstanding Villas with what could be considered the best views on the whole of Tenerife, from the position of our house, we are able to share this panoramic outlook with the Atlantic stretching out before us and the island of La Gomera in full view. The sunsets are stunning and you

will think you have died and gone to heaven. We also find we are in a suntrap with the sun all day with a very pleasing breeze from the Atlantic so even the hottest day, you are still comfortable. The local area has many good restaurants, supermarkets and a large sports complex but still retains its old Spanish charm. The sale will

include most of the furniture and quality fittings and with no onward purchase on the island, it would be ready for immediate occupation. This property can be viewed at www.tenerifeproperties.net Ref No: I758 and is only 399,950 Euros. Contact numbers – 922 724 119 (office) 608 573 443 (Rachel) 699 250 870 (Lynne)

City Killer To Bypass earth Today!

Scientists at nasa calculate that 40m long Asteroid 2012 DA14 will whistle past Earth on Friday February 15th (today) closer than the orbit of some weather and communications satellites, speeding by at a distance of 17,000 miles (27,400km), or any other asteroid ever recorded. It will be recorded as earth’s closest shave with an identified flying object since re-

cords began. Asteroids and meteorites that have come closer than that have ended up colliding with the planet but this one is not thought to be a danger to either us or satellites. It was discovered by a Spanish former dentist now amateur asteroid spotter. He is part of a team of who is part of an army of asteroid watchers vital to Nasa’s early warning system. There are thought to be a million asteroids out there as big as 2012 DA14. They are

called ‘city killers’ because they would be able to wipe out an entire area should they hit the planet. Nasa is thought to be able to trace only 1% of them. There are believed to be around 100 ‘planet killers’, of which Nasa has observed approximately 90%. A ‘planet killer’ is widely believed to be responsible for wiping out the dinosaurs. One struck a remote part of Russia in 1908 and flattened vast areas of forest in what became known as the Tunguska incident.

All in One Pan Roast

There are some brilliant all-in-one recipes, and this one is great. It has some great powerful flavours that simply make this a dish a must for anybody that just wants to throw the dinner in the oven, and let it cook while you put your feet up! Very quick, economical, tasty and hearty. So get out the deep dish roasting pan for a simple chicken and vegetable roast. It all goes in together, gets roasted to perfection and tastes divine.

Ingredients

Method:

1Kilo Chicken pieces (legs, thighs, wings) 1 Onion roughly chopped (I prefer a red onion for more colour) 1 Red Pepper cut into large pieces 2 carrots peeled and grated or cut into bite sized pieces ½ bottle cheap white wine 1 table spoon dried oregano 1 tablespoon dried parsley 3 chicken stock cubes crumbled 1 teaspoon dried garlic or 2 fresh garlic cloves finely diced 1 tbsp. olive oil 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 kilo potatoes peeled and cut into nice medium sized pieces

Preheat the oven to about 200°c. Put all the ingredients into a large deep baking tray and mix them all well together. Cover the tray with foil, making sure it is totally covered and put it into the preheated oven on a medium shelf for an hour and a half. After this time, remove the foil and check that not too much of the wine has evaporated, try tasting a little bit of the stock. If it has become a little too salty, add a little water. Stir the Roast so it is all cooking evenly and return to the oven for a further 15 minutes (checking regularly) to allow the top to brown gradually.

Pugh’s tips/hints:

You may notice that all the herbs are dried. I prefer fresh herbs, a good handful finely diced is wonderful, but this recipe is for speed - if you have the time use fresh! Why use oregano and parsley? - Fresh sage is my favourite!!!! If you use chicken breast, it won’t take as long to cook – make sure that your potatoes are cooked through if you use breast meat. Try it with Pork – and use CIDER !!!!

The strangest restaurants of the World! When I was finishing my NVQ level 3 in hospitality and catering, my final placement was at the Alton Towers hotel, so I know what it is like to work for a themed establishment. The waiters and bar staff are actors, the chefs are preparing artistic themed food, with the detail not just being in the establishments décor, but delivering the décor within the service and dishes alike.

and speckled blue seats complete with headrests. Waitresses dress like flight attendants, and “passengers” have much more than just chicken or fish to choose from.

Over the next few weeks I am going to be sharing with you some of the most craziest themed restaurants from around the globe. Truly amazing, yet packed and making a great profit!

Toilet Restaurant in Taiwan

The A380 Inflight Kitchen! Airplane food. If you just can’t get enough of eating on airplanes but you’re sick of going through security and paying expensive airfare to do it, you may want to visit the A380 InFlight Kitchen in Taipei. The restaurant resembles the inside of a plane, with faux oval-shaped windows, baggage compartments

Creative Restaurant in Taipei, Taiwan, with modern decor and full-on toilet theme. Marton Theme Restaurant in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, has toilet concept for their unique restaurant. They decorate the room and the chairs that created just like toilets. Tables created to look like bathtubs, and food will be served on plates and bowls that designed like toilet seats too. Customers love their delicious food combined with the toilet design make special sensation.

Make up mask Sad without siblings

Since I got together with my boyfriend, he hasn’t seen me without a full face of make up on. It was fine when we were living apart, but now we’ve moved in together it’s a real problem. I go to bed after him, and wake up before him so I can put my makeup on. I just can’t let him see me without it as I’m too ugly. I don’t want this to ruin my relationship, what shall I do? Lisa

People write to me with all sorts of problems Lisa and yours isn’t unusual, plenty of us suffer from a poor selfimage. The thing is, your boyfriend probably hasn’t even given this a second though whereas you’re letting it pretty much rule your life! The saying that beauty is only skin deep is so true. Your bloke is with you because he wants to be! I very much doubt that its 100% about your looks or your makeup. Having said that, I do recognise your problem and I feel the way around it is to take things one step at a time. Give yourself a few months and each day just start reducing the amount

I’ve always wished that I had some brothers and sisters. I had a lonely childhood with no one to play with and now I’ve grown up, I’m just as lonely. I’ve moved a lot and as a result have not made many friends. I do visit my parents but it’s always quiet at their house and makes me feel even more depressed. I’d love to have a big family to support me and make get-togethers fun. What can I do to make up for this?

of makeup you wear in front of him. Making this a gradual change will take the edge of the situation for you and will also, hopefully, avoid any awkward conversations that may arise if you just change overnight. The truth is though; you’re quite possibly the only person worrying about this. The rest of the world, your boyfriend included are probably oblivious to it.

Becky Life is what you make it Becky and all the time you’re wishing for the impossible, you’re inadvertently holding yourself back. These days, there are countless clubs and even social networking sites online where you can meet people and make some great friends. Looking back and moaning about your childhood certainly isn’t the way to go here! You can’t change the past can you? The future however, is a very different matter – all you’ve

got to do is realise that! Maybe somewhere along the line, you will end up with that big family that you want so much but whatever happens, you owe it to yourself to make the most of the here and now! Regardless of where you live these days, it’s easy to keep in touch with mates from all over

the world so your excuse about moving house a lot doesn’t make any sense whatsoever. Do your best to banish all thoughts you have of being lonely and reach out into the world a little more. I think once you open yourself up to the possibility that there is life out there, you’ll notice a huge difference in your own life.

Old for her years Abusive brother My daughter has recently started secondary school and she’s changed so much. Suddenly my little girl has started acting like she’s 20, not 12! She’s wanting to go out and meet boys, wearing short skirts and causing arguments at home. I knew this was all part of having a child but I didn’t realise that it would happen so soon. How can I calm her down? For another few years at least! Sasha If you think this has taken you by surprise, imagine how your daughter must be feeling? I have to be honest and tell you that being a parent isn’t the easiest job in the world – especially when you’ve got a hormonal son or daughter to deal with! She’s probably going through puberty and doing her best to understand the physical and emotional changes she’s experiencing herself! You can help by making sure your daughter understands some basic ground rules as well as letting her know that she can always come to you for help and advice. One of the most important things you can do is explain to her that know what she’s going though, after all, you were 12 yourself once remember? You being there as a good mother AND friend will mean the world to her. Having said that, being 12 isn’t a green light to go off and cause havoc so you do need to introduce some discipline too! Like I said, it’s not an easy job Sasha but it’s not an impossible one either. Good luck.

I need some help with my 16-year-old brother. He is constantly verbally and physically abusing me and my 9-year-old brother. He is even abusive to our mum when she refuses to give him money. He doesn’t have a job and is going nowhere. I want to help him, but am starting to hate him. Louise

By the sounds of things, your brother has turned into a bit of bully! If left unchecked, things will gradually get worse and worse until he becomes too much to handle. In an ideal world, this lad would want to make the most of his life and would have some respect for his family, perhaps he needs a push in the right direction. You all need to sit down as a family and confront these issues rather than accepting them as part of day to day life. Talk to your mum and suggest that you have a family conference to try to make the situation better for all concerned. In the long run, your

brother needs to get off his backside and get a job but the immediate problem is his lack of respect. Try to make him see that what he’s doing is affecting everyone and explain that you want to help. At the end of the day, that’s what families are for.

Don’t try to run before you can walk though, take things one step at a time. Ultimately, if he doesn’t wake up to the fact that he is hurting you all, your mum may need to put her foot down and give him a choice – stay and play nicely or find somewhere else to live!

British Athletics Grand Prix Editor Recommends BBC 1 - 13:00 - 16:30

Jonathan Edwards introduces live coverage of the British Athletics Grand Prix from Birmingham – arguably the best annual indoor meeting in the world. The star attraction at the National Indoor Arena will be Great Britain’s double Olympic champion Mo Farah, who will run in the 3,000m – and its likely to be his only indoor race of 2013. The 29-year-old set a British and European record when he finished second in the event last year, and views the race as perfect preparation for this summer’s World Championships in Moscow. The Grand Prix is real star-studded event,

which is set to include appearances from Olympic champions such as women’s 100m queen Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce, 110m hurdle champion Aries Merritt and high jump gold medallist Ivan Ukhov. As well as Mo, the home crowd will be able to cheer on fellow British athletes including high jumper Robbie Grabarz, who won bronze at the London Games and emerging stars such as pole-vaulter Holly Bleasdale, 400 metre hurdler Perri Shakes-Drayton and 800m runner Andrew Osagie. Lead commentary comes from Steve Cram with Colin Jackson, Denise Lewis and Paula Radcliffe providing expert analysis.

ITV 1 - 21:00 - 22:00 Aylesbury Prison in Buckinghamshire, home to some of the most dangerous young criminals in Britain, has allowed an exclusive insight into life for prisoners and staff for a new documentary series on ITV - Her Majesty’s Prison: Aylesbury. prisoners are just 21. Officers engage in a daily battle of wits, to ensure they keep control. They must also try to help rebuild the fractured lives of these young men. Meet The Izzards BBC 1 - 21:00 - 22:00 Eddie Izzard - actor, comedian, transvestite and marathon-runner extraordinaire - is about to embark on a remarkable journey using his own DNA as the road map. Locked within each of us is a genetic history book that reveals not only our deep ancestry, but also the migration of mankind across the globe. Using recent scientific breakthroughs and the help of geneticists, Eddie will unlock the secrets of where he - and we - came from. It will make Eddie the first person in Britain to use his own DNA to retrace his ancestors’ journey across thousands of miles and nearly 200,000 years of history. A two-part special

45

screening on consecutive days, this is the epic story of humanity’s journey from our shared origins in Africa 10,000 generations ago all the way to Eddie Izzard. In episode one, Eddie will explore his maternal ancestral journey – a trip that will be close to his heart, as Eddie’s mum died when he was a young boy. It’s a voyage that will take him from Southern Africa to the Red Sea, on to Turkey, and up through Italy and Scandinavia before finally reaching Britain on a journey he hopes will make him feel more connected to his mum as he bridges the gap between his genetic and own life history. En route, he’ll meet local communities with whom he shares genetic markers - distant cousins separated by thousands of years of history.

HiSTory MaDe aT Bar nauTa

nauta A 6 v 4 Bar 180B Forget J:F:K; John Lennon and the Twin Towers, where were you when Nauta A won their first match of the season? Some great double shots from Greame, a missed black from Joules and a great comeback from whipper snapper Becks left Nauta 3-0 down. Jack started the comeback with a great black to see off Ricky, The doubles also went Nauta’s way 3-3. A foul on black by Joules, let Ricky steal the frame. No problems for Simon against Nikky to peg it back to 4-4. Another great black from Ray C to set it up for the last frame. Graeme got off to a flier and a great snooker from Jack saw Graeme produce the shot of the night to recover. Five balls on the trot for Jack and black ball for game, safety or glory? Greame went for the latter only to pot black and white. TRAGIC for 180. MAGIC for NAUTA................... The Night History Was Made. Hoops 8 v 2 Barracuda Hunters Hoops 3rd from top versus 3rd from bottom Barracuda Hunters who put up a good fight and took a lot of frames to the last ball. After a lengthy 1st frame John finally potted the black, Erle for the Hunters put up a good fight against Captain Chris who finished it for

the Hoops, Carl down to his last ball let Helen in for the Hunters who cleared six balls but ran out of position on her last colour. Carl back in to finish the frame. The Hunters new player Sean had a good game against Jim but could just not clear the Black, Jim did, hard luck Sean. The Hunters took both doubles, with Carl seeing the white go in followed by the black in the 1st double, and then Hunters new player Sean sink the Black in the 2nd Double. In the 7th frame it was John V Klaus. Enough said? (If you say so! Ed). The next frame was the battle of the Captains, Chris took it for the Hoops, (no surprise there), then Carl V Helen again, she tried, but to no avail. Last, but not least, Steve for the Hunters V Jim (Hoops) who said “It was a great double” after going for the black in the top corner saw it miss and then roll slowly & slower until it just managed to drop in the bottom pocket. Treasure Island 7 v 3 Legends C It was a tight start to the night with Treasure Island`s Steve going six balls up and then creeping the white in the middle pocket after the black to make it 1.1, then came the first of the doubles with Jake and Steve, must have been one of the longest games this season

with both teams playing it safe until Jake missed a sitter on the black but luckily for Treasure Island, Legends missed a sitter too. Mackie played young Jack in the fifth singles game but Jack just couldn’t pull it off, missing a black covering the pocket (he’s one for the future, a very good player). Stevie and Alex were on top form winning both their singles and their doubles together. Thanks Legends C for some great pool and a cracking night. Barracuda Bandits 7 v 3 Legends A A great night of fun and banter between these two teams. It was always going to be a close match and so it proved with the Bandits only taking command with the last two frames. In the doubles Elliot scattered all the balls into potable positions from the break, the only problem Paul had in making an eight ball clearance was whether to take reds or yellows, and in brilliant form his 7 baller was never in doubt. With the score at 5-3 Jim sealed it for the Bandits with a lovely long black (even though I say it myself), and John made it 7-3 with a gritty display against Legends captain Graham. Legendary Jokers 4 v 6 vivo The home side psyching themselves up hosting the top of the league, going one up to start, but then being pegged point for point. The luck factor swinging both ways, both sides giving fouls away like they were going out of fashion, on a superfast table which seemed to have magnetised the pockets to collect white balls. All even at the 9th frame, Victor for Vivo looked very convincing as the winner, securing at least one point, while Valeri (Vivo) took on Alex (LJ) in the final frame for the win or draw. A tense frame and very even, Valeri eventually clearing all but one, then laying a superb snooker in which the route was up and down the full length for Alex to see his final red, (except for a yellow which was obscuring the straight line double path off the top cushion). Alex tried it anyway, and sure enough the white missed by few inches, however so fast was the table, the white did another up and down, and on its final slow travel, nudged the red home, to great applause from the house! Not lucky enough however, to give himself a good shot on the black, but nevertheless left Valeri with not only a difficult pot on his yellow, but even more difficult for position on the black. Rising to the challenge, Valeri showed his true pedigree by stunning the yellow to the middle with the cue ball reversing off two cushions for perfect position on the black. Simply superb! Good sportsmen all round, hard fought match in great spirits, one to remember.

The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association has revealed Stephen Lee has “a case to answer” over allegations of match-fixing. The 38-year-old from Trowbridge, who began this season as world number eight, is alleged to have breached WPBSA rules in matches at four tournaments, including the 2009 World Championship. The WPBSA said in a statement on Thursday it had considered a “large amount of material” before deciding to take action against Lee. Lee is currently suspended from competition and Jason Ferguson, chairman of the WPBSA, has decided the ban will remain in force until the conclusion of the formal independent hearing or hearings, arranged by Sport Resolutions UK. No date has yet been set for these. In a statement, snooker’s regulatory body said: “The WPBSA has gathered a large amount of material from the Gambling Commission, West Midlands Police and third parties in relation to these allegations. “This has been a complex investigation where the material has had to be traced,

recovered and re-evaluated with regard to the WPBSA rules. “The available evidence has now been considered and in accordance with the disciplinary rules, the chairman of the disciplinary committee has decided that there is a case for Stephen Lee to answer in relation to a breach of the WPBSA members rules. “These alleged breaches relate to four matches at the Malta Cup 2008, two matches at the UK Championship 2008, one match at the China Open 2009 and one match at the World Championship 2009.” Lee’s current suspension relates to an investigation into suspicious betting surrounding his Premier League match with John Higgins in October last year, which is ongoing. Lee responded through his lawyer, Tony Miles, in a statement which read: “Mr Stephen Lee wishes it to be clearly

known that he denies all allegations brought against him by the WPBSA. “He does not accept that he has been involved in any breaches of the rules and regulations and is gravely disappointed that a decision has been taken to bring proceedings against him.” Miles continued: “Mr Lee is shocked by the suggestions made against him, he has been a professional snooker player for 20 years and has always sought to up hold the highest standards as required of such a player. He has fully co-operated with the WPBSA in its investigation. “He continues to be suspended by the WPBSA and the impact of suspension and the allegations upon him and his family is considerable. “As a hearing is now to take place it would not be appropriate to make any further comment at this stage.”

Manchester united goalkeeper David De Gea has rejected speculation linking him with a move away from Old Trafford. De Gea’s future at United has been the subject of conjecture in recent weeks with reports in Spain suggesting a possible move back to Spain with Real Madrid or Barcelona could be on the cards. The 22-year-old has come in for criticism this season for some performances, with his critics suggesting he has struggled to adapt to the rigours of Premier League football since his arrival from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011. De Gea silenced his critics with a man-of-the-match performance in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League clash with Real Madrid and he insists he is happy with life at United. “I am very happy in Manchester. Every day I am happier,” De Gea told reporters after

the game. De Gea produced an unorthodox save to keep out Fabio Coentrao, saving his effort with a scissor-kick clearance on his line and the keeper admits the stop was instinctive. “Stopping to Coentrao? That was just a very quick decision. I was acting on instinct,” he said. “It was a great match. Real Madrid and Manchester Unit-

ed did very well. [Madrid] have a very strong attack, so we needed to be strong in defence.” De Gea is expecting another busy encounter in the second leg with Real needing to score to cancel out United’s away goal in the Bernabeu. “Real Madrid will attack at Old Trafford. They know they have to win to advance and we will do our best to stop them,” concluded De Gea.

Miss Steenkamp was a top South African model and law graduate. Her publicist Sarit Tomlinson said the family was “shocked” and “devastated” by the news. She described Miss Steenkamp as “the sweetest human being” and “a talented and bright young girl”, adding that the couple had a “healthy, fabulous relationship”. Photos of the model appeared in newspapers at the weekend, when she described Pistorius as an impeccable man who always had her best interests at heart. The Johannesburg-born athlete, known as the “Blade Runner”, made history last year when he fought for, and won, the right to be the first amputee to compete in the Olympics. He won gold in the 400m and another in the

4x400m relay at the Paralympic Games. The athlete had both legs amputated below the knee when he was 11 months old, because of a congenital condition, and runs on carbon fibre blades. Last year Time Magazine named him as one of the world’s 100 most influential people. His London-based agent, Kate Silvers, said she would not be commenting at this stage, but will be issuing a statement later. Pistorius, like many fellow South Africans, appeared to have serious concerns about his safety, and reportedly kept a revolver at his bedside and a machine gun by his window, as well as a cricket bat and baseball bat behind his bedroom door. Runner’s World magazine editor Mike Finch, speaking from South Africa, said: “If anybody can overcome this sort of thing it’s prob-

ably Oscar. He’s had to deal with a lot in his life. He had a mother that died when he was very young, he obviously has his disability, but yet he’s been amazing from a South African perspective as an ambassador. There is a certain school of people that don’t particularly like him, but I think today everybody has kind of rallied round him.” South Africa’s Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee said the organisation was in no position to comment, “other than to say our deepest sympathy and condolences have been expressed to the families of all concerned”. UN figures show that in South Africa, just over 17 people are killed by gun crime per 100,000 people. The highest gun death rate in the world is in Honduras with 68 deaths per 100,000. In the USA, the figure stands at 2.97 deaths, while in the UK it is 0.1.

an could be involved. “The driving schedule will be communicated on Monday next week.” Force India are the only team yet to confirm their full driver line-up. Paul di Resta

debuted the VJM06 at Jerez last week, with reserve driver Jules Bianchi - seen, like Sutil, as a candidate for the second seat alongside di Resta - also getting a run alongside James Rossiter.

Sutil Could Test With Force India

Force India confirmed on Thursday that Adrian Sutil could take part in next week’s Barcelona test.

Autosport reported that the 30-year-old, who raced for the Silverstone-based team between 2007 and 2011, had undergone a seat fitting ahead of next week’s test at the Circuit de Catalunya. However, it is not yet 100 per cent clear whether Sutil will drive. A Force India spokesman confirmed: “Adrian has had a seat-fit with the team this week. At this stage the test driving schedule for the Barcelona test is not finalised, but there is a possibility Adri-

It was the tenth game since the arrival of replacement coach Almeida and it has been a sorry tale with just two draws to show despite an influx of new players. This week Alberto returned in goal but veteran striker Noah was unavailable leaving them Balduino to shoulder most of the attacking load. The first half was poor with Sporting splitting the sides after 38 minutes after a Bustos pass from the left allowed Pablo Perez to beat stranded Alberto. Balduino was thwarted by the home keeper soon after the restart while at the other end Donoso hit the post twice in quick succession. Marino tried to change things by bringing on Chema for Poncho after 58 minutes but the home side responded with a second strike from Perez. The arrears were reduced when Sorrano put the ball in his own net, Ramses and Rayco brought fresh legs to the Marino cause but no equalizer although Balduino lost a duel with the goalie just before Cabellero settled it with an injury time marker. This Sunday second placed Real Oviedo come to the Estadio Olympico in Playa de Las Americas, even a win would offer little chance of escaping relegation but it would be of enormous interest to neighbours CD Tenerife.

Swimming, Cycling, And Running From Iceland To Tenerife

You just can’t keep international athletes away from Los Cristianos, well you can’t blame them when they are swapping just above zero for 24 degrees of sun. This week a party of 20 triathletes from Reykjavik have been pushing themselves to the limit in Arona, leading the party was Karen Axelsdottir holder of the Iceland record for the Ironman endurance event. Breaking off from a punishing circuit of Las Vistas beach Karen reduced me to a wheezing wreck by just describing the challenge. “We all have different goals; some are training to qualify for the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii later in the year and others for the Olympic formula triathlon. Ironman is a 3.8 km swim, a 180.2 km cycle ride, and a 42.2 km run (Karen’s did all that in a record 9.24 hours) and the Olympic

Triathlon is a 1,500 metre swim, 40 km bike ride, and a 10 km run.” This is the group’s first visit. “We had heard good reports about the conditions in Tenerife, flights have been getting more frequent in recent years and the direct flight is only four and a half hours. We are staying at Hotel Paradise Park so it’s a short run down the hill to the swimming pool at the municipal sports centre for an hours early work out, then through to the beach for a combination of open water swimming around the bay and running along the beach.” That was only part of the week’s routine. “We have cycled up to Mount Teide and back and are also doing an east coast cycle down from Santa Cruz, we can easily burn off 4,000 calories on the big cycling leg.” I figured they were more than entitled to their fruit and ice cream treat at the beach café to supplement a steady input of carbohydrates.

Keatley can fill void left Federer makes serene start by injured Sexton to Tournament defence Johne Murphy has called for Munster teammate Ian Keatley to be included by Ireland for their Six Nations trip to Scotland.

Jonathan Sexton has been ruled out of the Murrayfield clash with a hamstring injury, with Ronan O’Gara set to start at fly-half. Keatley has been providing stiff competition for O’Gara at Munster, and Murphy believes he can also challenge the veteran at international level. “I think Keats is up there, he is a very talented fella,” said Murphy. “He has already played for Ireland a couple of times, he is very experienced. “I suppose he showed in the Racing Metro game recently and especially at the weekend how he can run games like that. Rog (O’Gara) is Rog, you can’t say enough about him. “Rog is probably going to

play with us this weekend to get some game time but if Jonny is out, then there is a certainly a race for a spot. “There are three young lads going for a spot there and I’d have no problem chucking Keats in there.” Paddy Jackson and Ian Madigan are also in contention for a spot among the Irish replacements, but Keatley did his chances no harm by kicking 20 points in Munster’s win over Edinburgh last weekend. “We played quite pragmatically last week, kicked to the

corners and Keats really drove the game. It was probably one of his best games ever in that regard,” said Murphy. “He made right decisions, when to kick and when to run, and the times we ran out of our red zone was when it was on and we made good ground. We might have kicked a phase or two later because that was the right option at the time, so Keats was definitely last week making those decisions and it allowed us to start playing rugby in the right areas.”

The world number two needed less than an hour to dispose of his Slovenian opponent and will next face home favourite Thiemo de Bakker. A single break in the eighth game was sufficient for Federer to take the first set, while he broke twice in the second before closing out the contest with a love service game. “I’ve been here and preparing for a few days, but matches are always different than training,” stated Federer. “The ball flies a bit and you have to be prepared. “I’ll have to be careful against De Bakker. I played him in the Davis Cup (2012). The local players always get up for home matches. I’ll have to approach him carefully and not underestimate him.” Easy for French duo French duo Gilles Simon and Julien Benneteau both moved into the quarter-finals of event with little trouble. Simon, seeded fifth, crushed Italian qualifier

Matteo Viola 6-3 6-1 while Benneteau saw off Victor Hanescu of Romania 6-1 6-3. There was also victory for compatriot Richard Gasquet, the fourth seed - and winner in Montpellier last week - winning his first round match against Viktor Troicki of Serbia 7-6 6-1. Greek Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis reached the second round when his in-form French opponent Benoit Paire retired with the score 6-0 6-7 4-0. Meanwhile, Italian Andreas Seppi was the latest seed to fall, the sixth-ranked player going down 6-3 6-4 to Matthias Bachinger of Germany.
