Five arrests have been made in connection with the dreadful fires that affected Tenerife back in 2012. It appears that at least some of the fires were started deliberately.

What can possibly be their motivation? I am dumbstruck that someone would even throw a cigarette out of a car window without any thought as to the consequences, let alone do it to start a fire. Hopefully when the 5 people who have been arrested in Tenerife speak in court they will provide us with some answers. I am sure they will have plenty

Unfortunately after the fires the government changed the penalties for arson and can now jail offenders for 5 years. A shame this wasn’t in place for the perpetrators of the 2012 attacks.

Evidence points to the fact that several of the forest fires last year, were started intentionally.

Tenerife was devastated by forest fires in the summer of 2012. Firefighters, locals and police battled against the flames in an effort to extinguish them before there was too much damage. Hundreds of people had to be evacuated from their homes and the subsequent damage done to the island was horrendous.

The fires spread very quickly due to the weather conditions - extremely high temperatures, low humidity, and gusts of wind, as well as rough terrain and an accumulation of combustible material. The fire spread to a forested area, affecting and damaging an area measuring 6,512 hectares and affecting the municipalities of Adeje, Vilaflor, La Orotava and Guía de Isora. The fires were deemed officially extinguished on the 29th of August, and caused significant damage both economic and

environmental to plants, animals and agriculture.

The fire also affected zones in protected natural areas, specifically the Crown Natural Park Forest, Teide National Park, Nature Reserve Special Barranco del Infierno, and Ifonche Protected Landscape.

Now the evidence collected both during and after the fires, it has been determined that cause of one of the fires was probably a lit cigarette.

The bulk of the investigations conducted by the Judicial Police departments started

in September and ended finally at the beginning of February, in a police operation called “Ifonche”.

Based on technical reports made by the Civil Guard, SEPRONA (the service for the protection of nature), and statements from several witnesses in the area, as well as genetic testing (DNA), it has been determined that one of the fires had been caused by a man whose house was very close to where the fire started, research found that the house owner was the alleged perpetrator of three fires.

During further investigations, numerous inquiries were made to Ifonche neighbours, which, together with the evidence obtained from the analysis and study of telephone calls to the emergency service 1.1.2, and other complementary research, based suspicion on a car that drove by where a fire originated moments before. There were three people inside the vehicle. The research focused on the location of witnesses and the statements from the three occupants of the suspect vehicle and the reconstruction of events, eventually obtaining the necessary concrete evidence against the suspects.

During the course of the research, evidence

indicated that on the day of the fire, and start time, just after 2.00pm, the temperature was extremely high, it was also a clear day, the defendant was the only person who, with the other two occupants of the vehicle he was driving, passed by the start point of the fire, an area with plenty of abandoned orchards and dry grass at the time of the fire. It is alleged that the accused threw a cigarette end out of the window; he drove through the area with the windows down. It is also alleged that the same man was also the first witness to observe the fire and alert the Emergency Services.

The result of all proceedings, the Criminal Investigation Section of the Organic Unit of the Judicial Police of the Guardia Civil de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, proceeded to arrest the alleged perpetrator of the fire, JAMH, aged 52 years, a resident of San Cristobal de La Laguna, who was charged with an alleged arson of a forest, committed by imprudence.

As a result of these investigations, incriminating evidence was obtained against the alleged perpetrators of these fires which led to the arrests of a further four people, all of whom have denied starting any of the fires.

Guilty – Jennifer MillsWestley Trial Ends

After a week-long trial, Deyan Valentinov Dejanov, a 29-year-old homeless Bulgarian man has been convicted of beheading Jennifer Mills-Westley, a British woman who had made her home in Tenerife after retiring from her job in Norwich. Deyan Deyanov has been sentenced to 20 years in a high security psychiatric prison. Compensation to the daughters of his tragic victim has also been awarded, and set at 100,000 Euros.

The court in Santa Cruz found that although Valentinov had committed the act of murder, he was not criminally responsible for his actions because he is an acute paranoid schizophrenic. Valentinov entered the store in Los Cristianos in May 2011, grabbed a 9-inch knife and repeatedly attacked Mrs Mills-Westley before running into the street still holding her head.

Living rough in Los Cristianos, Valentinov was a crack cocaine and LSD user, and well-known to police on the island and had been arrested at least four times since January 2011 for violent offences. A warrant for his arrest had been issued just days before the murder, but officers couldn’t find him. He had previously been sectioned in the summer of 2010 under the Mental Health Act in Glan

Clwyd hospital, north Wales, and again at La Candelaria hospital in Tenerife, before being bailed in early February 2011.

Deyanov’s defence had argued he was not criminally responsible for his actions.

But though his responsibility was diminished, the jury convicted him of murder because he took his victim by surprise and she could not defend herself.

Judicial police based in Puerto de la Cruz have arrested five people in connection with various forest fires last summer. Four have been arrested for causing fires in the north, two of these for a fire which began at Ruigómez, and affected El Tanque, Los Silos and Santiago del Teide.

One person for three fires in the area of Santa Bárbera in Icod de los Vinos, and another, for four fires at Aguagarcia in Tacoronte. A fifth person from La Laguna was arrested for causing the massive fire in the south which began at Ifonche in July.

Close Encounters of The Canarian kind?

After only two hours of consideration, the public jury in the Los Cristianos murder case at the Santa Cruz Provincial Court, unanimously agreed that it had been proved that Deyan Valentinov Dejanov, who brutally murdered Jennifer Mills Westley on the 13th of May 2011 in a shop, is guilty but not criminally responsible, as a paranoid schizophrenic. Both the prosecution and the defence lawyer agreed to propose that Dejanov be admitted to a secure psychiatric facility, leaving the magistrate to decide whether the term would be fifteen or twenty years. the new tropicana Commercial Centre has now been given the final go-ahead with the Canarian High Court’s rejection of an appeal submitted by the Canarian Commerce Federation, Fedeco, against its viability. The Court ruled that there was no municipal law to preclude the granting of a licence.

Granadilla de Abona has given the go ahead for the creation of a new industrial estate. The mayor, Jaime González Cejas said that the council had approved the building application, and as a consequence, guaranteed material supplies for the completion of the port and for the strategic land needed for future investors. This move also allows for earth to be moved, and for work to continue without further delay. He said that this decision responds to the immediate interests of the island, employment needs, and the plans for the south.

Canarian president, Paulino Rivero, announced on Monday that the regional government is preparing an aid package for June, to help small and medium sized companies, and the self-employed, to obtain credit. Rivero said: “If we don’t invigorate the economy, if there is no movement, we won’t be able to resolve our worst problem, unemployment.” He asked the secretary of state for business, for equal opportunities for Canarian companies, to overcome the barriers of territorial fragmentation and the distance from the mainland.

Public workers in the Canaries, through their unions, have lodged a prior notice with the regional government’s employment department, of a general strike planned for the 15th of April. This strike, which is expected to take place on all the Canary Islands, at all places of work dependent on the Canarian government, will extend to civil servants and other functional staff. It is in protest over the cutbacks, which include the suppression of the extra Christmas payment, staff cutbacks, changes in working hours and conditions, salary cuts, and the failure to negotiate with the staff.

Puerto de la Cruz has passed new municipal regulations that will outlaw plastic terrace furniture in restaurants, hotels and bars, and require the leisure sector across the board to provide furniture made from aluminium, wrought iron, or wood. There is to be a colour branding exercise in the town too, with toldos and umbrellas being required to match, either natural colour or burgundy. Councillors for Urbanismo y Desarrollo Económico, Sebastián Ledesma (PP) and Lope Afonso (PP), presented the details of the new bylaw which, they said, would require all establishments with a terrace to seek a new municipal authorization, in the granting of which the technicians will also determine the number of square metres authorized for each terrace. The rules officially came into force last November, but the Ayuntamiento has until now given a period of grace for adaptation.

oVEr the past few weeks i’ve covered Canarian topics such as Atlantis, the origins of the Guanches and prehistoric life, as well as taking a look at the wildlife that exists here right now, both endemic and foreign. i was beginning to run out of life forms! However, after quite a bit of research i’ve discovered something i never knew about our beautiful island, something that’s very close to my heart...... tenerife is regularly visited by aliens - and no, i don’t mean illegal ones, i mean extra-terrestrials - from space - like the ones in Star Wars!!

Anyone who’s been down Veronicas

after about 4am or have ever been to the “Stage Door” probably won’t find this surprising, but in all seriousness, Tenerife has been a hotspot for UFO activity from the 70s at least, to the point that UFO enthusiasts from all over the world travel here every year to go spaceship spotting.

So here’s a few of the most interesting cases I’ve come across- and remember... the truth is out there: 1. The Volcanic Webcam: On October 30th 2012, a video was posted on “UFO sightings daily”, taken by the webcam used by the Mount Teide Volcano Observatory to monitor volcanic activity.

The recording began at 8am on October 26th and ran for 24 hours, at around 3.35am, a clear image of a disc shaped object came into view and was visible for over an hour before moving out of range of the camera.

“The object was closely similar to a disk-shape ship. This unprecedented recording result has exactly emphasized the importance of keeping an eye on such webcams in any part of the world,” said Scott C. Waring, the founder of UFO Sightings Daily.

2. A Hairy First Contact: Much rarer than UFO sightings are actual extra-terrestrial contact.

According to a report by Steven Andrews, an investigative researcher on UFO activity, in January 1999 a married couple in Tenerife were witnesses to “a couple of tall long haired aliens.”

The visitors apparently walked along the street for several minutes before returning to their spherical craft. The late, well known Tenerife journalist and broadcaster Paco Padron wrote the book “Midnight Lights” about his UFO sightings and his encounters with extraterrestrials here in Tenerife.

3. The 1976 “multiple sighting” The sightings documented on 22nd of June, 1976, are particularly interesting

due to the fact that for more than 40 minutes an unidentified craft was seen in Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma, Gran Canaria and at sea by the crew of a Spanish Navy Corvette.

Several hundred people both civilian and military claimed to have seen the craft and an official military report was filed that was declassified in 1994.

According to the report, the UFO was “a bright yellow light travelling above the horizon” that “was replaced by a ‘luminous’ rotating beam that persisted for approximately 2 minutes. A glowing halo then developed around the object and it split into two components, a smaller component which split away from the bottom and went out of view, and a larger component which rose from the top of the halo and climbed away at a ‘rapid and irregular’ spiral pattern.”

The light could clearly be seen reflecting off the water and illuminating the coastline yet had no radar signature.

Even more intriguing is a report by Doctor Francisco Padron Leon.

The Doctor was in a taxi and not only witnessed the sphere, he claimed to be close enough to see 2 occupants working on a metal console inside the craft, “He described the sphere’s occupants as being 2½m to 3m tall, and dressed in red. The sphere was then reported to have filled with “bluish smoke” from inside the sphere, expanded significantly to the size of approximately a 20 storey building, and then risen into the air before flying off in the direction of Tenerife.”

There are many, many more reported sightings I don’t have room for - so the question is, why are they drawn here?

Do the moonlike craters and “alienesque” landscapes remind them of their homes far, far away? Maybe flying over Teide takes them back - much the same way that watching UK telly or having a Vivo Sunday Carvery is like having a little piece of home-sometimes we all need that.

Government Creates Grants To Aid New Businesses

The Council of Government of the Cabildo de Tenerife has approved a line of grants for 310,000 Euros to promote the creation of new companies, the recruitment of people with problems of employment and the promotion of craft fairs.

The agreement was pre-

sented by the economic VicePresident, Carlos Alonso, and island Minister of economic development, Efraín Medina, who have highlighted that in recent years, the insular Corporation has spent some two million euros on the creation of new companies.

130,000 Euros is destined for non-profit organizations that promote the hiring of persons with employment

Tenerife Weekly - 1st March - 7th March 2013 problems. Eligible beneficiaries include unions, non-governmental organizations, associations and foundations, and companies who employ a minimum of 25 people, and at least 10% of people who are either young, unemployed over a long period or disabled.

150,000 Euros has been reserved for new companies.

They must be based in Tenerife and be involved in the creation of a company with a minimum 20 hours employment. “The goal is to avoid the closure of the companies, so it must meet conditions of technical and economic feasibility”, underlined Alonso.

Companies shall be eligible for a minimum of 5,000 Euros and a maximum of 10,000 Euros, to be used to finance costs such as social security, training, advertising and legal expenses. It is hoped that these advantages for these companies will enable them to create stable employment.

In addition, 30,000 Euros is available for craft fairs to help in the installation of ‘stands’, furniture, advertising, or security. To qualify for the subsidy, the municipality will have to prove that at least 40% of the craftsmen have Canarian products.

Drug Traffic Ring Sentenced to 43 Years

The Courts of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has sentenced Mike Topas, a German drug trafficker, to 17 years in prison naming him as the leader of gang who carried out aggravated crime against public health for drug trafficking and theft with violence and intimidation. Topas, according to the statement, was the leader of a criminal organization dedicated to the distribution of cocaine, as well as ecstasy (MDMA) in the North of Tenerife, specifically in the Puerto de la Cruz and Los Realejos areas.

In addition, to the prison sentence, the court imposed a fine of 10,000 euros. However, the sentence of the 52-year-old German is much lower than the one requested by the Prosecutor, they were calling for 35 years in prison and 300,000 euros fine to cover the offences of drug trafficking, robbery with violence and intimidation, extortion, threats, prostitution and corruption of minors, conspiracy to perpetrate a violent robbery, as well as abuse of firearms and injuries. However, only some of the allegations were proven. in this case, there was a total of 18 allegations of various criminal offences.

The lieutenants of Topas, Germans Uwe Drexler and Enrico Przybyllok, were also sentenced. Drexler to 17 years in prison, 11 for an aggravated offence of drug trafficking, four

for robbery with violence and intimidation and two more for illegal possession of weapons.

The last accusation occurred because he was in procession of a Smith and Wesson, 22 gauge in his home. He was also fined 9,000 euros. Enrico was sentenced to nine years in prison for drug trafficking and was fined 8,000 euros.

According to the police investigation, Topas’ band was in permanent contact with criminal organizations based in Tenerife and representatives of Italian mafia. Drexler and Enrico were responsible for providing protection for their ringleader.

The cocaine that came into the hands of this group was distributed via various bars and restaurants in the Puerto de la Cruz. Buprenorphine, was purchased from sub-Saharan citizens, specifically formed by a Ghanaian and a Cameroonian couple, who imported it from Africa. In this activity, criminals had the support of at least two officials of the forces and bodies from State security, which have yet to be identified.

Professor Donates Hospital Waiting Ancient Book Lists Increase Collection

The municipal library of Teror, Gran Canaria, has received a valuable collection of over 3,000 books owned

by Professor of Greek studies, Jesús Nuez Domínguez, whose wish before his death last summer was to leave his private library to his hometown.

The extensive collection includes several old books, one dated in century XVII and XVIII, as well as a variety of contemporary works by different authors.

Ayuntamiento de Teror has already moved various books to the Teror Jesús Nuez library and is in the process of cataloguing so that the greatest number of copies can be available to the users of the Municipal Library. Some exemplary ancient copies remain guarded in the municipal archives for their preservation, and may be consulted on request.

Thanks to Jesús Nuez, the municipality of Teror have

named a space of the municipal library “Rincón Jesús Nuez Domínguez “, where the new Fund’s books will be available.

Rincón Jesús Nuez Domínguez (1946-2012) was born in Teror, where he lived out his childhood and adolescence. He studied philosophy and letters at the University of La Laguna and subsequently graduated in Classical Philology at the University of Salamanca. His professional career was developed in Tenerife, where he obtained the Chair of Institute in Greek. However, his links to Teror were constant, and every year visited his native township on several oc-

casions.

As teacher and lover of culture, he created throughout his life an extensive library of classic specimens, literature, together with travel, encyclopaedias and dictionaries.

Jesús Nuez was a tireless traveller he also loved the cinema, music, sport, photography and hiking.

Currently, the municipal library of Teror has a Fund of 6,000 volumes for adults and children that are placed in order by subject, history, philosophy, sports, novel, poetry, theatre, etc. With its new acquisition, the library will now house another 3,000 books.

December 2012 saw the waiting lists for surgery in hospitals across the Canary Islands reaching its highest figures since the Ministry of Health starting releasing them in 2003. In total, 29,675 residents were waiting to be operated on in the different public hospitals across the Archipelago, a figure which is 9% higher than six months previously.

During the past six months, according to data released by the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS), surgical waiting lists grew in most hospitals especially in Gran Canaria: 26 % in the ‘Hospital Universitario Doctor Negrín’ (5,221 people on waiting lists), 22% in the ‘Hospital Insular’ (5,665 people) and up to 28% in the ‘Materno-Infantil’ (1,119 people).

The increase in waiting lists from June to December last year (2012) is in addition to the increase there had been in previous months, so over the entire period, the waiting list increased in 2012 by 4,814 people (19%). While the waiting list for consultation rose by 10% over the last six months.

The director general of welfare programs, Hilda Sanchez, justified the increases quoting ‘the economic demands of the Government of Spain that has required a reduction in the named hospitals (12% last

year). In contrast, SCS workers say that the “real reason” for this increase is that “It has a reduced staff and professionals due to those who retire and are not replaced.

Currently (work) contracts are made for months and sometimes even for days, all this of course increases the waiting list”.

In response, the ‘Las Palmas Association of Private Hospitals’ has said that it is willing to make their operating rooms available to counteract SCS’s “worrying increase in waiting lists that exist in the Canary Islands.”

Loro Parque Takes On New Chimpanzees

Loro Parque is the new home for a group of 7 chimpanzees, Pan troglodytes, which have been moved to its facilities under the instructions of CITES authority and with the co-operation of the Department for the protection of nature of the Guardia Civil (Seprona), and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Canary Islands Government. The move was done to ensure the welfare of the individuals.

The group, consisting of one adult male, three females and three youngsters, was monitored during the transfer by an experienced team of keepers and veterinarians, which took care of the mammals extensively.

Currently, the family is in very good conditions, including the recently born young and, since their arrival at their new enclosure, they have already begun to explore their new environment and interact normally.

As soon as possible, this family will begin the integration process with the rest of the chimpanzees which have been homed in Loro Parque since the 1980’s, when they were rescued from the streets of Puerto de la Cruz.

To guarantee the quality of

animal welfare, Loro Parque has made several changes to its facilities by adding new termite mounds, waterfalls and trunks, so the chimpanzees can develop further in an enriched environment.

This transfer to Loro Parque was within the spirit of collaboration that the park has maintained for years with the different authorities and the Customs Department, CATICE and SEPTRONA, to rehouse rescued animals of various species and contribute to the solution of animal welfare problems.

Amongst the different animals who have been rescued and housed in Loro Parque include a shark, which was found at a London airport, in a passengers suitcase, a large group of gorilla males,

for which Loro Parque created the necessary social structure in order to solve the problem of surplus of gorilla males in European zoos. In the year 2008, Loro Parque recovered Humphrey the seal, who was found on the coast of Casablanca (Morocco) and, after being recovered, was released into the waters of the north of Spain. More recently, Morgan, the Orca, was rescued and taken to the Park after almost dying off the coast of Holland.

These are just some examples, along with different parrots, penguins and turtles that different authorities, have transferred to Loro Parque as they are regarded as having the best facilities to ensure their welfare.

Queens Gala Fire – The Aftermath “You are afraid to go out. It feels that everyone sees you and points at you. Nor do you sleep and if you do, you only have nightmares.” These are the words of Magnolia Cruz Melo, aged 21. She is receiving psychological help after the Queen’s Gala at the Santa Cruz Carnival, in which her friend Saida Prieto, aged 25, was terribly burned. Magnolia was the candidate who wore the dress designed by Willy Jorge, the same dress that featured the pyrotechnic effects that caused the fire.

Magnolia is not well and is unable to forget what happened. And although she knows that what happened was an accident and that she is not guilty of anything, she cannot help feeling responsible for causing suffering to Saida. “I wish it had been me that burned. I feel that everyone looks at me, that everyone knows me; there are those who believe that I am to blame. I have no confidence in myself. I cannot read the newspapers or watch television, it really hurts.” she says. Magnolia does not want any kind of prominence; she stresses this again and again, because she is aware of the situation and the suffering of Saida and her family.

In an extraordinary twist, Magnolia revealed that her sister, Nauzet, competed in the Carnival queen competition in 2008, she went on to win it. Magnolia wanted to follow in her footsteps, and live a “wonderful experience”, but her dream became

“a nightmare”. “The dreams of both Saida and me broke down that day”, she says. She adds that her house now has memories of two carnivals, one “to remember thanks to Nauzet” and one to “forget”.

Magnolia says that she understands that there is no real culprit for what happened since “it was an accident”.For Magnolia, the Autonomo of Festivals of the City Hall “washed their hands after the Gala” because it already knew that the

designer had permission to use the pyrotechnic effects on the costume.

Magnolia adds that this would have not happened if the contest rules prohibited the use of these fires or any other type of effects. On the night of the Gala, Magnolia insists that there was no one in the costume when the pyrotechnic effect fired and insists that only cold fires and nothing more were used, though the police investigation has since determined that other types of tricks

were also used.

As Saida struggles to recover from her ordeal in a hospital in Seville, and Magnolia receives psychological help to overcome what happened, in the municipality of the capital city mayor, the nationalist José Manuel Bermúdez, has sacked the Festivals Manager, Francisco Trujillo, for not rejecting Willy Jorge’s request to use pyrotechnics as it came at the last minute. The official investigation into the fire is continuing.

The spokesman of the Popular Party (PP) in the City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Cristina Tavío, has said that they have not ruled out requesting the resignations of other Councillors or any other responsible person in the Group of municipal government in connection with the Saida Prieto incident, alongside that of Bermúdez.

A spokesman of the PP said that it had been given various versions about what happened on the evening of the disaster and whether permission to use cold fires was in place, about whether or not emergency services knew the self-protection plan, and on the appropriateness of such a plan. Indeed, in the plenary session of last Friday the Councillors did not even have copy of insurance covering the Gala.

Tenerife Sur Lions Health Insurance 28th Charter Night Gala Dinner

On the 23rd of February there were dinner suits and posh frocks in abundance at the prestigious Paradise Park Hotel as Tenerife Sur Lions Club celebrated it’s 28th Charter Year in style.

Gathering on the terrace of the hotel’s Strelitzia Restaurant for pre-diner drinks and canapes the sixty plus members and guests mingled together renewing old acquaintances and making new ones.

Prior to the meal service, Lions’ President, Norman Goodall MBE, addressed the seated diners saying that although evening did have a certain formality it was predominantly a celebration of the club’s birthday or charter anniversary and so there would be more of a party atmosphere throughout the evening with some great entertainment lined up for later.

He continued by highlighting the clubs’ two main projects supporting holidays for under privileged children, drawing attention to the evening’s printed programme with photographs of some of the holidays activities. He added that this year will see a group of forty from Tenerife going to the UK whilst a second group of fifty will be coming from the UK and that also this year, for the first time, a small group from Poland.

He paid tribute to the work of the staff of the club’s charity shops in Costa del Silencio and Los Cristianos and praised the public for their continuing tremendous level of support with donated items. He laid great emphasis to the fact that without both, the Tenerife Sur Lions Club would be unable to fulfill the increasing number of requests from both local governments and social services to help families in real distress, not just with food but with clothing and other household essentials.

Concluding, Norman thanked all the members, wives, partners, and helpers who have come and given their support with a particular thanks to Ken and Beryl Sadler who had organised the whole evening: “Its all the little things and attention to detail that make this another night to remember – thank you both” The formalities over, the guests enjoyed the fine dining service of a five course menu accompanied by excellent wines and finishing with coffee and liqueurs. new website that explains how British citizens should use their UK-issued European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs) has been launched as part of a campaign to clear up common confusion over how to obtain healthcare in Spain.

The website www.healthcareinspain.eu provides comprehensive information on the use of EHICs, whether visiting or living in Spain.

What you should know about the European Health Insurance Card A UK-issued European Health Insurance Card should only be used to access medically-necessary state treatment during the course of a temporary stay in Spain. It does not provide access to all state treatment but for those in Spain on a temporary stay, it is the correct way to access state healthcare.

British citizens who live mainly in Spain should

change the way they are registered, because for them the UK European Health Insurance Card is not the correct form of health cover. The new website www.healthcareinspain.eu provides an interactive questionnaire that, depending on personal circumstances, links British residents to the Spanish social security webpage or a search page for the local INSS office or local health centre.

David Pennington, Head of the Department of Health’s International Healthcare team, says: “Many British citizens living in Spain are confused about how to access state healthcare and many use their EHIC cards when they should be

accessing healthcare in another way.

“This website is part of a campaign to explain who can use a UK-issued EHIC and what it’s for. It also helps people to find out about other ways to access state healthcare in Spain, depending on their circumstances.”

The website www.healthcareinspain.eu is part of an EU-funded campaign by the UK Department of Health and Valencia Health Authority that aims to raise awareness of the correct use of EHICs among Britons visiting and living in the Valencia region. The information on the website is also relevant to British citizens across the whole of Spain, including the mainland and islands.

The regional government in the Canary Islands has predicted fall of around 3% in tourists from Germany this year 2013, equivalent of 80,000 less visitors to the Canary Islands. The drop has been attributed to the cut in scheduled flights from Germany planned for this year. Air Berlin has confirmed that it will be reducing its activity in the region this year

This downward trend was already visible at the end of last year 2012, when the Canary Islands lost 77,515 German visitors. However, the

decline was not equal across all islands. Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura all saw German visitor numbers decreasing although Tenerife gained 18,970. La Palma also received more visitors from the region. With regard to flight numbers, the Canaries recorded 32,248 flights from German airports, 988 fewer than in the previous year.

The Deputy Minister of Tourism of the Regional Government, Ricardo Fernandez de la Puente, released the forecasts, during the presentation of the Canary Island stand which will be used at the upcoming International Tourism Fair in Berlin (ITB) between 6th and the 10th of March.

Red Cross Extends Help To The Disadvantaged

More than 24,000 residents of the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife will benefit from the 306.744 kilos of food which the Red Cross began distributing this week. The current crisis has forced thousands of islanders into vulnerable situations; around 33.8% of the population of the Canary Islands need this type of aid to eat daily. Tenerife received the most aid: more than 263.804 kilos; followed by La Palma, with 33.750; La Gomera, with 6.128; and El Hierro, with 3.062.

The products will be delivered to bodies providing services to groups and people in need. In particular, about 307 tons of food that was circulated on Monday, will reach 71 charities in the province, which include 18 local assemblies of the Red Cross, 16 entities and associations and 37 city councils. With this third action, Red Cross will have distributed in the Tenerife province a total of 718.829 kilos of food.

The initiative is part of the 2012 Plan of the guarantee fund Agraria (FEGA) of food aid for the benefit of the most deprived persons in the European Union, managed in Spain by the Ministry of agriculture, food and environment. In 2012, the legislation allowed the expansion

of the range of food, since in addition to products dairy products and cereals, for the first time vegetables, olive oil, canned fish, juices and canned fruit were -incorporated. Elena Marco, Provincial Coordinator of the Red Cross, said the Organization “is facilitating a balanced diet to the people who need it.”

For the selection of these products, the FEGA, in collaboration with experts in nutrition, acquired food through public donations. The range of supplies is composed of 16 types of food that is nonperishable easy to transport and store. In this way, the final beneficiaries can easily prepare a full meal, either for just one person or a whole family.

A Framework ensures that today you cannot highlight specific profiles of claimants for of these grants.

For this reason, and taking into account that the current economic situation causes increasingly more people feel the need to call for help, the Red Cross aims to reach all those citizens who do not have these type of staples. The 307.000 kilos of food distributed on Monday will be allocated primarily among families in which all members are unemployed, have children living in foster homes, older people with family responsibilities which have arisen by family rehousing, people of long duration unemployment, the homeless, the young unemployed, people with physical disability or immigrant, as well as other

social groups.

The first food distribution of the 2012 Plan made by Red Cross to national level took place in June of last year and the second in November. With this latest distribution, the institution has managed to increase the number of beneficiaries to more than 200,000 persons above that of 2010 throughout the national territory, distributing food to a total of 700,000 citizens.

However, the work of Red Cross is not limited only to the distribution of food. Currently, the Solidarity Organi-

zation has also strengthened aid to schools and carries out the distribution of breakfasts to 180 schools in the archipelago. Red Cross Coordinator also says that the work of the Organisation extends to all fields since “the work of aid cannot be limited to the delivery of food, but it has to be a commitment of all to help these citizens as far as possible”. The Red Cross carries out social emergency measures: among which are the distribution of clothing as well as medical supplies and other services.

Following these cases of false crimes, agents from various police stations in Tenerife have arrested or indicted several people. The individuals who use this technique to obtain insurance visit the police stations to make denuncias on the grounds that they have been hit or as-

saulted by thieves who then stole the phones.

On several occasions, officers managed to find out that the allegations are false and reported with the sole aim of collecting the insurance that comes with the electronic devices.

Over the last few months,

in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife four individuals have been arrested or indicted for making false theft claims.

The same tactic has been used for years by tourists who denounce false robberies to try to collect the travel insurance.

Spanish police arrested 45 people, including nine under the age of 18, after protests in Madrid against strict austerity measures. Police said there had been disturbances after the marchers in central Madrid dispersed on Saturday evening. the arrests took place near Atocha railway station in the city centre.

Protests in Spain have become common since the government passed a series of unpopular cuts in a bid to cut one of the eurozone’s highest deficits.

Although Saturday’s protest was mainly peaceful, police said they later found four firebombs in a backpack abandoned on a street. The interior ministry said officers seized 22 firecrackers, five flares and a stick from two minors near Atocha station.

Some 40 people needed minor medical attention after the altercations following the demonstration, including 12 police officers.

No-one was seriously injured.

Mainland News In Brief National Police have arrested Miguel Montes Neiro, known as the longest serving prisoner in Spain, for his alleged connection with the theft of jewellery valued at four million euros from a shopping centre in Marbella. In February last year, he was released from prison having served a total of thirty six years for various non-violent crimes, during which he made eight attempts to escape. Following an intense campaign, during which he was supported by various political party leaders, he was acquitted of some of the crimes and released.

The tax authority has dismantled an organization dedicated to bringing Chinese products into Spain, and money laundering. The gang, which operated from Sagunto in Valencia, extended their business to tobacco and false branded goods. Eleven were arrested in Valencia, Barcelona and Alicante, two hundred and thirty three bank accounts blocked, and goods worth twenty four million euros seized. The goods were mainly distributed to warehouses in Madrid and Elche, for sale, or to be transported to other European countries.

The Malaga council’s office which helps those affected by mortgages shortfalls has dealt with a hundred and forty one people in the four months since it opened. The council designed an internal protocol for this office, to guarantee fast assistance for anyone who is at risk of being evicted, by signing an agreement with the Lawyers’ College last October.

The councillor for business promotion and employment, Esther Molina, said that none of the people they have attended to so far have been evicted, and this has been achieved by lawyers gaining time for their clients.

Valencia’s councillor for economy, industry, tourism and employment, Máximo Buch, travelled to London last Monday, to promote the opportunities and benefits of investing in the region, and to attract business projects with a high economic impact, which are capable of generating jobs. He also wants to create an exterior team to promote the opportunities and strengths in the Valencian community. Tomorrow, Buch will be giving a conference at the London School of Economics and Political Science about reinventing and reindustrialising Valencia.

The Valencia Provincial Court has ordered Air Europa to pay over three thousand five hundred euros to three families for a delay of over five hours to a flight to Paris.

The court considered that mechanical breakdowns aren’t circumstances which exonerate responsibility. The company has appealed against the order. The three families requested damages from the airline for the delay, and for waiting time, tension, discomfort and inconvenience. They said they had lost the value of tickets for six adults and four children to Eurodisney.

In the next few weeks, the company Hammam Al Andalus will be opening an Arabian spa in the center of Malaga, forming a new tourist attraction, with discounts for residents. The company has invested over five million euros and ten years’ work in its creation. Company manager, Antonio Rivadeneyra admitted that in the current economic situation, they had taken a risk, but said Malaga was the ideal location for the project. The architecture is designed to take clients back to the ancient Medina of Malaga, and make them feel calm and relaxed.

More than 1,000 flights will be cancelled in Spain between March 4 and 8 due to a strike by staff at Iberia. The cancelled flights include 431 Iberia flights and 750 flights by Vueling and Air Nostrum, which use Iberia ground services. Iberia Express was also expected to cancel flights. Last week, nearly 1,300 flights were cancelled due to a five-day strike, to be followed by two others in March. Iberia staff are protesting a decision by Iberia’s owner, International Airlines Group, to cut nearly 20% of its staff following its 2011 merger with British Airways. A government-appointed mediator has been trying to negotiate an agreement between Iberia management and trade unions.

Miss Spain Pageant Goes Bust

Organisers of the annual beauty contest Miss Spain have filed for bankruptcy disrupting the competition that has reigned for more than 50 years. The organisers of the pageant have been experiencing financial difficulties for some time and lost the right to participate in the last Miss Universe pageant

The company, Certamen Miss Espana SL, made a voluntary application for protection from its creditors on February 7, according to an official state bulletin, joining a long list of Spanish firms forced to close in the crisis. The Madrid Commercial Court gave creditors a month to inform the administrator of money they are owed. The bankruptcy judge overseeing the case ordered the debtor’s assets seized and appointed a receiver.

Under the Spanish system, if a company is placed in the hands of a receiver it could still re-emerge if its creditors can be satisfied.

Several Spanish celebrities have com-

peted in the contest, including Eva Gonzalez, former girlfriend of Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas and now partner of bullfighter Cayetano Rivero.

Spanish Construction To Try Cape Verde Companies from mainland Spain are due to take part in the Cape Verde International construction and Housing Fair (FICH’2013), to be held in the second half of the year in Praia, Cape Verde.

At the end of a threeday visit to Cape Verde, the president for Foreign Trade of the Canary Islands Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Navigation, Maria de la Salud Gil, was charged with coordinating the participation of the companies which, as they fight the crisis in the construction sector in Spain, plan to move into the Cape Verdean market.

Some companies from the Canary Islands have previously taken part in FICH and this year companies from mainland Spain are expected to do so for the first time,

and according to Yanira Duque Monteiro, director of the Cape Verde delegation of the Canary Islands Chamber of Commerce, around 20 Spanish companies are expected to attend.

As well as official contacts and discussions about ways of driving business development between the Canary Islands and Cape Verde, Maria de la Salud Gil also said that the Canary Island Chamber of Commerce would support the Agency for Business Development and Innovation to set up a network of business incubators and to train businesspeople to compete within the market.

During her visit to Cape Verde, Maria de la Salud Gil also discussed with the Cape Verdean authorities the need to open up a regular shipping line to carry cargo between the Canary Islands and Cape Verde.

Ryanair To Cut Flights

Ryanair will carry out its threat and cut its operations in Spain in protest at increased airport departure taxes there. The move, due to take effect at the end of March, will mean a reduction in its Spanish flights by 12%, with the biggest cuts in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Valladolid. It will also stop flying from the northern airports of Asturias and Bilbao.

In a press statement, Ryanair said the reductions will lead to the loss of more than 5,000 jobs and that they will cut the company’s traffic by 5.4 million passengers this year, to about 30 million. The company warned it would take such measures last November, but it said they are still reversible if the Spanish authorities lower airport taxes. According to government figures in 2011, Ryanair was Spain’s biggest domestic carrier, AENA, which owns and runs most of Spain’s airports, raised the charge in 2012 by an average of 19%, although doubled it in Madrid and Barcelona, the country’s biggest airports. In 2013, the tax was

AENA, is struggling with a 14 billion Euros debt, insists the increases are justified and within the law “This increase will cause severe cuts to traffic, tourism and jobs in Spanish airports,” said Ryanair spokesman, Robin Kiely. “Ryanair will keep growing in other European airports and will keep offering low fares.”

PriNCESS Cristina, the youngest daughter of King Juan Carlos, may be formally named as a suspect and faces a possible indictment as her husband inaki Urdangarin - the Duke of Palma - appeared in court to be questioned about allegations of money-laundering.

The preliminary request by prosecutors to name the princess is likely to be made this week based on the evidence of Diego Torres, her husband’s business partner.

Castro was set to question Urdangarin about three alleged offences against the Treasury, including corporate

tax fraud related to his foundation and matters linked to his personal income tax returns.

the courthouse as Urdangarin, who has not yet been charged with any crime, entered the building. The investigating magistrate has ordered that he and Torres post a joint bond of �8.1m (£7m). They are alleged to have done fraudulent deals with politicians in regional governments in Valencia and the Balearic Islands while running the not-for-profit Nóos Institute. Part of the money was then laundered through offshore accounts, it was claimed. Both Urdangarin and Torres deny any wrongdoing.

The judge also intends to ask about alleged bank accounts in tax havens such as Andorra, Luxembourg and Switzerland.

The investigation into the alleged financial misdeeds has deeply embarrassed the monarchy in a country hard hit by a financial crisis and sky-high unemployment.

Politicians are already calling for her father’s abdication after 37 years on the throne as anger grows over the corruption scandal engulfing the family.

Urdangarin was given the title of Duke of Palma by the king, now 75, after his daughter married the Olympicmedal winning handball player in 1997.

Spanish Designers To Conquer New Economies

With Spain in the middle of a financial crisis, their fashion designers have had to use their imaginations to conquer new markets in Europe, the United States and new emerging economies.

“Abroad difference, quality and creativity are very much appreciated,” Nuria Sarda, creative director of Catalan lingerie brand Andres Sarda, said at Madrid fashion Week.

“No two countries are alike, each has its own characteristics and you have to adapt,” added Sarda, whose brand exports mainly in Europe but also to the United States, China and Russia.

designers. Among those who showed their works was Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, whose colourful and bold designs have made her one of Spain’s best-known creators.

Big-Spending Russians Descend On Spain

Big-spending Russian tourists are flocking to the beaches and famous landmarks of Spain in ever greater numbers, providing a much-needed boost to the recession-hit country’s tourism industry. They are drawn by the country’s mix of pleasant weather, sandy beaches, historic monuments and cultural attractions such as the Prado museum in Madrid and Antoni Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona.

Roman Gavrilenko, a 26-year-old elementary school psychologist from Murom in western Russia, visited Barcelona, Valencia, Toledo and Madrid with 11 other Russians during a week’s tour of Spain. Spain was the first Western European nation he had visited and said he now plans to return to the country with his grandmother.

“People are very friendly.

The Sagrada Familia was really, really impressive. It was psychedelic, it made my head spin,” he said as he sat in the lobby of Hotel Florida Norte near Madrid’s royal palace after completing a tour of the city.

The number of visitors from Russia passed the one million mark last year for the first time, totalling 1,206,227, a 39.8% jump over 2011 and

double the amount that arrived in 2010, according to tourism ministry figures.

They credit the rise in the number of direct flights to Spain, easier visa rules, and the growing appetite of Russia’s rapidly expanding middle class for foreign travel.

Spain is also reaping the rewards of having been one of the first countries to specifically target the new Russian

The Suarez Jewellers Group behind Aristocrazy launched the ready-to-wear jewellery line in 2010 in Spain and is preparing to try and break market that emerged after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, according to Igor Rotenshteyn, president of the Terramar Group tourist operator which last year brought about 100,000 Russians to Spain. “During the Soviet era very few Russians had the privilege of travelling abroad. When Russia opened up to the world, Russians did not have any experience of travel and Spain was one of the countries that was most active in trying to capture clients,” he said.

Over half of all Russian visitors to Spain head to Catalonia. During the peak summer season Russians are now the largest tourist contingent in many resort towns in the north eastern region, knocking the British from the top spot. “This was unthinkable a few years ago,” said Salou’s town councillor for tourism, Benet Presas.

The surge in Russian visitors offset a fall in the number of visitors from Italy and the Netherlands last year and has helped fill hotel rooms at a time when Spaniards are cutting back on travel.

Russians accounted for just 2.1% of the 57.7 million foreigners who visited Spain last year; they spent more than any other nationality.

Russians spent an average of 159 euros ($214) per day in Spain, 47% more than the average of 108 euros spent by all other foreign visitors and far more than the 93 euros per day spent by visitors from Britain, Spain’s

The value of Spanish textile exports hit a new record in 2012, passing 10.35 billion euros, an increase of 8.0% over the previous year, according to the Information Centre for Textile and Confection.

Clothing exports were fuelled by the success of companies such as Inditex, the world’s biggest clothing group, and high-street clothing chain Mango, from Catalan. “We must not forget that the Spaniards, with Inditex, Mango, Desigual and other companies are world leaders in clothing, which

brings widespread international recognition,” said Borja Oria, the president of Acotex, an association of textile and accessory companies. “Spanish designers are increasingly recognised beyond their borders,” he said, giving Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Josep Font and Miguel Palacio as examples.

De la Prada’s 2013-14 winter collection was also shown at the event, designer’s manager, Carmen Ayats, said: “Since the national market has collapsed, what remains is the international market.”

Exports of the brand have soared and account for 75% of total sales, this is compared to 45% before the start of Spain’s economic crisis. The brand also takes part in Paris fashion shows to project its image worldwide and its main markets are Japan, Brazil and the Arab countries such as Kuwait, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, she added.

“Movement is happening elsewhere. There is no life here,” said Ayats.

“National tourism is really hurting due to the crisis and we are taking this opportunity to compensate for the fall with these tourists,” he added.

7 Arrested In Cartel Enquiry

Seven Colombian nationals suspected of acting as enforcers for drug cartels were arrested in Madrid in possession of a grenade-launcher and other armament, Spanish officials have announced.

Authorities had been tracking the suspects for over 16 months and decided to act after the group received a shipment of weapons, the secretary of state for Security, Francisco Martinez, and police director Ignacio Cosido told a press conference.

As well as the grenade-launcher, the consignment included a rifle with a telescopic sight, handguns, shotguns and silencers.

Investigators suspect the gang were sent to Spain to collect debts and settle scores on behalf of Colombian drug cartels while also trying to forge an alliance with Mexican traffickers based in Valencia.

The seven Colombians operated from a restaurant in the Madrid suburb of Leganes and used the phrase “to send flowers” as code for a hit, police said.

Emilio Hellin was a member of the far-right group Fuerza Nueva when he shot dead a student, Yolanda González (19), in 1980. Two years later he was sentenced to 43 years in jail, eventually only serving 14 years.

An article published by El País newspaper says that he has changed his name and is a senior adviser to Spain’s civil guard on terrorism and crime, as well as training and giving conferences to the police.

The interior ministry is investigating the identity of this expert on its payroll in light of the revelations, El País said. “He’s one of the best-trained civil experts and he’s way ahead when it comes to certain specialist areas,” Ramin Garcia, a retired senior civil guard, told the newspaper. “I don’t know anything about the past of this gentleman, all I know is that he’s always given us what we have wanted.”

An announcement from royal palace has said King Juan Carlos will have surgery for a slipped disc on March 3, This will be the 75-year-old monarch’s seventh operation in three years.

The king has a herniated disc in his lower back for which “the most suitable treatment... is a surgical operation”, the palace’s head doctor Miguel Fernandez TapiaRuano said in the statement.

The palace doctors said last week that the slipped disc was an “old” injury that they had found to have worsened.

The operation will be in La Milagrosa, a clinic in central Madrid, the statement said.

Juan Carlos has recently appeared on crutches after having both hips replaced in three operations last year.

The king had a benign tumour removed from a lung in May 2010. In 2011 he was given an artificial right knee and had a torn Achilles tendon repaired.

Juan Carlos is widely respected for his role in steering Spain to democracy after the death of the dictator General Francisco Franco in 1975. But over the past two years he has suffered health problems as well as rare scandals, including a corruption investigation involving his

son-in-law.

He and his family were taken in by the right-wing dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner and Hellin worked as an adviser to the Paraguayan security forces until his extradition to Spain three years later.

He was released in 1996, when he changed his name and embarked on a new career leading to his current relationship with the security forces.

When El País confronted him for its exposé, he claimed to be a brother of the convicted murderer and that Emilio Hellin was now dead.

But the death is not registered in official records and the newspaper tracked down the name change.

“It’s outrageous that this man should be doing that job,” said Asier González, the brother of the murdered woman. I don’t know if he regrets it [the killing]. Everyone has the right to a second chance, but if he does it with a new identity, it just shows the kind of person he is, it’s clear that in this country people linked to the extreme right enjoy privileges.”

Dalek Creator Dies

A ‘bashful’ man, ‘passionate’ worker and ‘great father’ is how family of Raymond Cusick, the man who designed Doctor Who’s Daleks, has been described this week. The Horsham designer died peacefully at the age of 84 on February 21st after a short illness.

His youngest daughter, Claire Heawood, paid tribute to her father and thanked fans across the globe for their ‘very touching’ messages.’ This week she revealed how she hid behind cushions like every other child at the sight of her father’s creation. “The Daleks terrified me,” she recalled. “We actually had a huge life size picture of them at the top of the stairs so we used to run up and down past it, trying not to look up, scared it would get you. I remember when we were taken to Leicester Square to watch the movie and within five minutes we ran out screaming.”

In 1963 Raymond created one of the most famous villains in cult science fic-

tion. But he was given a budget of just £250 to bring his idea to life. In the early stages of its development, Raymond slid a salt or pepper pot, he could never remember which, across a table to show a colleague how he envisioned the Dalek to move.

“I don’t think he was the easiest man to work with,” continued Claire. “He didn’t take fools lightly and he was passionate about his work.”

But Ray never sought fame, and was surprised at how the Dalek became the household name it is today. “He was quite bashful, it always surprised dad if he got a letter from Canada or anywhere else around the world and he would always write back if they asked for an autograph.” She added: “It’s all been really touching because it just reaffirms the support and how much the Daleks meant to fans.”

Raymond’s death comes just nine months before the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, which boasts millions of fans around the world.

Paul Winter, of the Horsham-based Doctor Who Appreciation Society, believed Raymond did not receive any serious recognition for his work for years, until Jeremy Bentham published his book Doctor Who: The Early Years. “The work of Ray and people like him is a real testament of what you can achieve against the odds because all the pressure was there to produce this ground breaking science fiction on the same budget as a typical Saturday afternoon series like Z Cars or Compact,” explained Paul. “Doctor Who was meant to push the boundaries of what could be done on TV, but it ended up stuck in the oldest studio in the BBC.” As a junior designer, Raymond had enormous responsibilities thrust upon him, but he successfully made the villain the global icon it is today. Winter said the modest man was ‘very proud’ of the Dalek stamp, adding: “The thing that I happen to know that annoyed Ray for a lot of years is that people tried to claim credit for a lot of his work.”

Harry: “Hope Diana Would Be Proud”

PriNCE Harry has said he hopes his late mother would be “proud” of his fundraising efforts, as he launched a project to help disadvantaged children in South Africa. the Prince mentioned Diana, Princess of Wales, as he gave a speech at a gala dinner for his Sentebale charity.

A speeding car launched into the air and landed upside down on the roof of a house in Houston, texas after the driver was speeding and failed to take a bend in the road.

The crash triggered Susan Mistini’s house alarm system and she thought someone was breaking into her home until a neighbour told her what happened. Ms Mis-

tini said: “He said, ‘hurry up there’s a car on your roof’. A car on my roof? And he said, ‘yes, a car on your roof’.”

Harris County Sheriff’s Assistant Chief John Laine said: “The car inverted and somersaulted and landed on the roof upside down.” The driver was taken to hospital and was reported to be in a stable condition.

Investigators have not determined whether or not alcohol was a factor in the accident.

The prince hopes to raise £2.5m to build the Mamohato Centre, which will provide psychological care and offer mentoring to children with HIV/Aids.

“It seems only right that it should be named after His Majesty (of Lesotho) and Prince Seeiso’s mother, Queen Mamohato Bereng Seeiso,” he said in his speech in Johannesburg. “She was so loved as the mother of the nation.

I hope she would be proud of what we are trying to achieve in her name. I hope that my mother will be proud, too.

Maybe, just maybe, they are together somewhere up there, with blueprints and sketches already mapped out. I can only hope we put the swings in the right place.”

Harry told guests that the Mamohato programme was already “transforming the lives of children living with HIV”.

He said: “I have met some of the children who have attended the Mamohato

Camps, and they have so much more confidence and knowledge of how to live healthy lives.”

During his visit to the Kananelo Centre for the Deaf on the outskirts of Maseru, the capital of Lesotho, the Prince was seen writing on a blackboard and laughing with the children.

The Prince, who recently completed a four-and-a-half-month tour of Afghanistan, set up the charity with Lesotho’s Prince Seeiso in 2006 in memory of both of their mothers. The two princes took also took part in a cookery class, making a kind of doughnut known in the

local Sesotho language as makoenya.

His first visit was to the Kananelo Centre for the Deaf on the outskirts of the capital of Maseru, where he learnt sign language and even took part in a kneeling dance with children there.

Harry also visited St Bernadette’s Resource Centre for the Blind in the city, where he watched children learning Braille and joined students for a game of five-a-side football.

Lesotho has a population of 1.8 million, half of those are under 18, and of those 40% are classed as vulnerable or are orphans.

Samsung Newest Over 60’s Galaxy Launches Encouraged To In March Retrain tHE successor to Samsung’s big-selling Galaxy S3 smartphone will be unveiled in March, the company has said. US mobile networks are understood to have pushed hard for an American launch after last year’s London debut of the S3. the event is scheduled to take place in New York, with Samsung tweeting: “March 14. ready 4 the show? #UNPACKED”, along with an image that reads: “Come and meet the next Galaxy”.

The new Samsung device is expected to feature a larger, higher-resolution display and an improved camera, as well as a faster processor.

News of the launch comes as Barcelona’s World Mobile Congress began, with manufacturers showing off their latest technology in the hope of tempting consumers away from Apple and

Samsung The S3 has been a big success story for the South Korean firm, challenging the dominance of Apple’s iPhone and widely seen as the standardbearer for Android phones. Samsung overtook Apple as the world’s top smartphone maker last year and its Galaxy range recently outsold the iPhone for a fourth quarter in a row. Nokia has just announced a 15 euro (£13) handset, the Nokia 105, aimed at new emerging markets such as China and India.

It is the third marriage for the American singer who is famous for keeping her private life from the media, rarely speaking about her exhusbands.

She married soul singer James DeBarge in 1984, and the marriage was annulled a year later. Her 1991 marriage to music video director Rene Elizondo ended in divorce in

tHE Higher Education minister, David Willets has suggested that workers over 60 should be encouraged to go back to university to make themselves more employable, he said that retraining older people meant that they had a better chance of keeping their job as they aged.

JANEt Jackson killed off rumours that she is about to marry her Qatari billionaire boyfriend by revealing that they actually married last year.

The 46-year-old singer became engaged and then married to businessman Wissam Al Mana, 37, but kept the news secret. The younger sister of the late Michael Jackson said in a statement: “Last year we were married in a quiet, private, and beautiful ceremony.” But gave no further details of where or exactly when the wedding took place.

The couple told the US TV show Entertainment Tonight: “The rumours regarding an extravagant wedding are simply not true. Our wedding gifts to one another were contributions to our respective favourite children’s charities.”

David Willetts was travelling with David Cameron in India, revealed that the age limit for taking out a student loan has now been lifted. Up until now, only those up to the age of 54 could apply for funding to pay for tuition fees which are rising to £9,000-a-year in England.

“There was a lot of criticism about the ageism of all this. The regime now is there is no age limit on fee loans,” Mr Willetts said. “There is certainly a pressure for continuing to get retrained and up skilled. Higher education has an economic benefit in that if you stay up to date with knowledge and skills, you are more employable. Education is such a good thing. It is not reserved for younger people. There will be people of all ages who will want to study. There is great value in lifelong learning.”

But critics have questioned why older people would want to take on more debt, and how they would pay the money back.

Pensions specialist Dr Ros Altmann said: “I wouldn’t have thought that three years at university, with those kind of costs and the long holidays that universities have, would be the best thing for older people to take up and pay for.”

Figures show that only 1,940 undergraduates starting courses last year were over 50, a tiny proportion of the total 552,240 students.

According to the Higher Education Statistics Authority, only 6,455 were between 50 and 60.

Many older students currently take courses for recreational reasons or to keep their brain active but it is believed this could change as people work later in life. Mr Willetts said: “There is evidence that the idea that you first study and then stop isn’t what the world is like any more. If they can benefit from it, they should have that opportunity. If people need it in order to keep up to date with changes in their jobs that is an opportunity they are going to take.”

The move follows experts’ warnings that the future economic success of Britain may come to depend on the contribution of older work-

ers. With one in four people due to be over 65 by 2033, there are major concerns about the burden of the ageing population on the taxpayer. There are also fears that, given the economic climate, older people are being forced to work for longer but risk being marginalised without modern training.

Paul Green, from Saga, said: “Older people retain a thirst for knowledge; are more disciplined students; and, may well have a better idea about the economic value of a particular course.

Many older people missed out on the expansion of higher education and the life-changing opportunities it can bring. So there should be a huge thumbs up from the Saga generations to this idea.”

Cardinal Resigns After Behaviour Claims T he most senior priest in the Roman Catholic Church in Britain, Cardinal Keith O’Brien, resigned on Monday over allegations of inappropriate behaviour up to 30 years ago. The news came just one day after claims by three priests and a former priest surfaced.

Cardinal O’Brien confirmed that he was to step down immediately, saying in a statement: “The Holy Father has now decided that my resignation will take effect today.”

The Cardinal should have been travelling to the Vatican this week to help choose the next Pope. He said he would not be joining the conclave to choose a successor to Pope Benedict XVI, adding: “I do not wish media attention in Rome to be focused on me, but rather on Pope Benedict XVI and on his successor.” The Vatican confirmed the news.

The Cardinal missed the traditional Sunday Mass on Sunday (February 24) after newspaper allegations relat-

ing to actions by him 30 years ago. The claims emerged just days after Cardinal O’Brien had called for the Catholic Church to end its celibacy rule for the priesthood.

In an interview with the BBC he said: “I realise that many priests have found it very difficult to cope with celibacy as they lived out their priesthood, and felt the need of a companion, of a woman, to whom they could get married and raise a family of their own.”

Bishop Stephen Robson, who is auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh, made a statement at St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh explaining why the Cardinal could not attend: “A number of allegations of inappropriate behaviour have been made against the Cardinal. The Cardinal has sought legal advice and it would be inappropriate to comment at this time. There will be further statements in due course. As always in times of need such as this, we cannot not be saddened by the events of the last 24 hours”.

Cardinal O’Brien served as assistant parish priest and as chaplain of St Columba Secondary School in Cowdenbeath, and then was spiritual director of St Andrew’s College in Drygrange and rector of St Mary’s College, Blairs.

On August 5, 1985, he was ordained Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh.

He is no stranger to making the news. He has been an advocate of priests marrying but an outspoken opponent of plans to legalise same-sex marriage. Last year his stance landed him the award, Bigot of the Year, from the gay rights group Stonewall. In 2007 he caused controversy when speaking on the 40th anniversary of the Abortion Act he said the termination rate north of the border was equivalent to “two Dunblane massacres a day”.

Scary Spice Joins America’s Got Talent Judges

Former Spice Girl Mel B is set to join the judging panel of the TV show America’s Got Talent. Broadcaster NBC has announced that the 37-year-old, known as Scary Spice when she was part of the chart-topping girl band, will replace Sharon Osbourne, who quit after a dispute with NBC over their decision to drop her son Jack from another reality show.

Mel B, or Melanie Brown, will join “shock jock” Howard Stern, who has agreed to return for his second season, and comedian Howie Mandel.

“This exciting addition of the dynamic Mel B to our line-up of judges promises that fans will see a strong, talented and opinionated woman match up against our equally outspoken judges Howard Stern and Howie Mandel,” NBC president of alternative programming Paul Telegdy said in a statement.

MC HAMMER Microsoft Latest iN ARREST RAP Victim Of Hacking MiCroSoft is the latest victim of computer hacking following US technology giants facebook and Apple. Microsoft said in a blog posting it had found no evidence that any customer data had been stolen in the cyberattack, which saw malicious software planted on a small number of its computers.

MC HAMMEr has posted on twitter to speak out about his arrest by California police on suspicion of obstructing an officer. the 1990s rapper, who was released on bail, suggested in a series of tweets that he had been the victim of racial profiling.

MC Hammer was apprehended in the car park of a shopping centre in Dublin, northern California. Police would not specify what sparked the incident, saying the 50-year-old had been detained on suspicion of obstructing an officer in the performance of their duties and resisting an officer.

Hammer, whose hits include U Can’t Touch This, tweeted that an officer had approached him in his car and asked whether he was “on parole or probation”.

He tweeted: “Chubby elvis looking dude was tapping on my car window, I rolled down the window and he said ‘Are

you on parole or probation?’.” The rapper said that as he handed over his ID the officer reached inside the car and tried to pull him out.

“It was comical to me until he pulled out his guns, blew his whistle and yelled for help (MallCop)!!! But make no mistake he’s dangerous,” Hammer said.

“I will now answer his question, contrary to his personal beliefs, all people of color (sic) are not on parole or probation fat boy!!!”

US news reports quoted police as saying the rapper had become argumentative and refused to answer the officer’s questions.

Hammer said he was not bitter about the incident and considered it a “teachable moment” and an “eye opener”.

by Facebook and Apple, Microsoft can confirm that we also recently experienced a similar security intrusion. During our investigation, we found a small number of computers, including some in our Mac business unit that were infected by malicious software using techniques similar to those documented by

other organisations.”

Microsoft gave few other details about the hacking, other than to say that was it similar to a hacking attack that online social networking leader Facebook disclosed last week.

Facebook said malware that infected some of its machines came from a mobile developer website that had been boobytrapped.

A “small number” of computer systems at Apple were infected but they were isolated from the main network and there was no evidence that any data left Apple, the company said.

Online messaging service Twitter also recently disclosed that hackers may have stolen information about 250,000 of its users.

he Pope has given his last general audience before stepping down as Pontiff. Benedict XVI stunned the Catholic Church when he announced he no longer had the mental or physical strength to carry on in the role. He officially stood aside on Thursday evening, the first pope to do so in 600 years.

Benedict greeted pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square for the last time before retiring, and waved to tens of thousands of people who have gathered to say good bye.

He was driven around the square in the “Pope Mobile”, surrounded by bodyguards.

At one point he stopped to kiss a baby handed up to him.

The crowd fell silent as he started to speak.

The Pope began by saying he will keep the faithful in his prayers and he has “great trust” in the future of the church. “To love the church means also to have the courage to take difficult, painful decisions, always keeping the good of the church in mind, not oneself,” Benedict said to thundering applause.

He recalled that when he was elected pope on April 19, 2005, he questioned if

us days of sun and of light breeze, days in which the fishing was good. There were also moments when there were stormy waters and headwinds.” But, he said, God would not let the church sink.

He said he had resigned not for his own good, but for the good of the Church.

was aware of the “gravity and novelty” of his decision to resign and would “accompany” the Church in prayer even after his resignation the following day. “I took this step in full awareness of its gravity and novelty but with profound serenity of spirit,” he said.

Pope Benedict told the

50,000 strong crowd he was not “coming down from the Cross”, but would remain in the service of the Church through prayer. He asked the faithful to pray for the cardinals as they faced a weighty task choosing his successor and for whoever they chose.

After he had finished speaking the crowd gave a

round of applause that lasted nearly a minute. He went on to give his address in other languages.

Tens of thousands of people, some carrying banners saying “Thank you!” had earlier began filling St Peter’s Square in preparation for his appearance. Chants of “Benedetto” erupted every so often and the mood hours before Benedict was even due to arrive, was of excitement. Many of the cardinals who will choose the next Pope were among those waiting to hear him speak.

At precisely 8pm (Rome time) on Thursday, the villa gates at Castel Gandolfo closed and the Swiss Guard withdrew - signalling that Pope Benedict XVI’s papacy is over.

The Pope has now left the Vatican and was flown by helicopter to the papal summer residence at Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome, until renovations have been completed on a monastery inside the Vatican walls. The Pope will live out the rest of his days in the new monastery in prayer and meditation. He will now be known as Emeritus Pope and wear a simple white cassock and brown shoes rather than his trademark red loafers.

The date for the conclave - when eligible cardinals vote in secret in the Sistine Chapel - has yet to be announced.

the Missourian city’s upscale shopping district Country Club Plaza. Mr Harris kept the ring and gave it back to its owner, Sarah Darling.

The woman has told US media she had put her engagement ring in her coin purse. As she gave Mr Harris her spare change, she forgot the ring was in her purse and dropped it in the cup. Two

days later, she found Mr Harris, and got her ring back.

The story was reported by local news station KCTV and then picked up across the US. Ms Darling and her husband Bill Krejci set up a fund for Mr Harris on the giveforward.com website, and thousands of people have already chipped in. “I’d like to contin-

ue using the word ‘unreal’ to describe this experience and spare you a million words of thanks and awe for another time,” Mr Krejci wrote on the website. “All donations will be given directly to Billy Ray at the end of the 90 day Give Foreward Campaign,” he said.

Daytona 500 Nascar Multi-Car Crash

The Daytona 500 Nascar went ahead despite a crash that injured 28 fans at the track a day earlier.

There were several multicar crashes on Sunday, but no one was hurt and none of them approached the magnitude of Saturday’s wreck which involved 12 cars in the final lap of the Nationwide race.

Rookie driver Kyle Larson’s car landed in the grandstands sending out large chunks of car towards spectators, sending 14 fans to hospital while another 14 were treated at the scene.

Daytona International Speedway workers were up until 2am repairing the fence that was damaged in the accident and track officials offered to move any fans who felt uneasy sitting too close to the track.

Jimmie Johnson claimed victory on Sunday - the second Daytona 500 win for the five-time Nascar champion, who first won in 2006.”Definitely a great start for

the team. When we were sitting discussing things before the season started, we felt good about the 500,” Johnson said. “We’re really excited for everything after the 500. I think it’s going to be a very strong year for us.”

However, he dismissed any idea of the country abandoning socialism. “Our greatest satisfaction is the tranquillity and serene con-

fidence we feel as we deliver to the new generations the responsibility to continue building socialism,” he added.

While the country remains under Communist Party rule, since taking over from Fidel in 2006 the younger Castro has instituted many important economic and social changes including expanding private enterprise, encouraging farming, minor manufacturing and retail and relaxing the hated travel restrictions. The party plan also includes an opening to more foreign investment.

The pledge of a change at the top could also have huge significance for US-Cuba ties. The wording of Washington’s 51-year economic embargo on the island specifies that it cannot be lifted while a Castro is in charge.

UxUrY Swiss watchmaker rolex is still Number one on an annual list of UK superbrands for the second year running. the firm beat Apple and Microsoft into second and third places respectively.

British Airways finished fourth in the top 20 Consumer Superbrands list, voted for by more than 2,900 British adults, with Coca-Cola following in fifth, Google in sixth and Hilton in seventh place. Heathrow Airport, which finished eighth, was deemed to be a superbrand by 71% of voters and 80% of Londoners.

The list also included other household names including Kellogg’s (ninth), Heinz (12th), Lego (15th), Disney (16th) and Nescafe (20th).

Apple moved up 16 places this year

Banksy work of art that was removed from the side of a north London Pound Land shop in Wood Green, north London, under mysterious circumstances has been withdrawn from sale at an auction in the US. The world’s most famous street artist painted the mural last May, before the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Called Slave Labour, it showed a boy hunched over a sewing machine making Union Flag bunting.

It was suddenly removed from the wall last weekend, to the fury of local people, and subsequently turned up at Fine Art Auctions in Miami where it was expected to fetch up to £460,000 ($700,000).

A week-long campaign by Haringey Council to stop the sale appears to have worked as, at the last-minute, the lot was pulled. A spokesman for the Florida auction house said there were “no legal issues” regarding the sale but that it had decided to withdraw two Banksy lots. No further explanation was given.

Wood Green councillor Alan Strickland said: “To have the mural withdrawn from sale at the 11th hour is a wonderful surprise for the community here in Wood Green. It suggests the level of international media attention has had a real impact.”

Mr Strickland emailed FAA owner Frederic Thut to ask why the sale had not gone ahead and if there were any plans to auction it in the future. “Local people have already been in touch about the brilliant news, but we need to know what’s going to happen now,” he said. “It

An email purporting to be from a passer-by and corroborating the police account is also now disputed, amid claims it was written by a serving police officer.

Scotland Yard is investigating and four arrests, including a male and female police officer, have so far been made.

The Next Tallest Building In The World

The London-based company Mace, who built the Shard in London, will work with fellow British firm EC Harris to create the Kingdom Tower in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, which will stand at more than 3,280ft high. The building, which will overlook the Red Sea, is expected to be taller than the 2,717ft Burj Khalifa in Dubai currently the world’s tallest skyscraper and be more than three times the height of the 1,017ft Shard.

The Kingdom Tower will have floor space of more than 5,381,955 square feet and will be a mixed-use building including a five-star Four Seasons hotel, private apartments, office space and an observatory.

The Jeddah Economic Com-

pany (JEC), which appointed the two firms to provide project, commercial and design management, said the vision for the building belonged to Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal. Chief executive officer, Waleed Abdul Jaleel Batterjee, said: “His vision is also that the project itself will set the world’s sights on our beloved Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and particularly on Jeddah.”

Mark Reynolds, chief executive of Mace, said: “Kingdom Tower is a project of international importance and immense ambition and we are delighted to be part of the joint venture team tasked with its delivery.”

Keith Brooks, head of property and social infrastructure at EC Harris, said: “The Kingdom Tower is a landmark building that will clearly demonstrate Saudi Arabia’s ambitions to the world.”

Building work is due to start later this year and estimated completion is within 63 months.

A very musical (and

ASt Sunday night (well, Monday morning by the time they finally got started) was oscar night, one that managed to be both predictable and surprising at the same time with several “ dead certs” winning exactly what was expected and several - not exactly outsiders, but certainly not safe bets, as well as a couple of academy firsts or at least seconds, but more about that later.

The 85th Academy Awards began its seemingly endless build up at about 11pm on the red carpet with seasoned interviewer Ryan Seacrest effortlessly handling the task of interviewing all stars as they arrived. It was the usual mix of stunning elegance and WHAT

were you THINKING (Anne Hathaway’s nipples- I’m talking to you!!) Finally, two and a half hours later the show finally began, this was going to require A LOT of coffee!

The much coveted job of host went to Seth Mcfarlane, creator of “Family Guy”, “American Dad” and hit movie “Ted” - quite an “out there” controversial choice for the normally conservative Academy (last year’s host was seasoned veteran Billy Crystal).

Overall, Seth did an outstanding job as host, his opening gag “The quest to make Tommy Lee Jones laugh begins now” actually made Tommy laugh (apparently t h e fir st time i n

24 years ), for anyone who knows his work there were no real surprises - some hilarious musical numbers featuring Channing Tatum, Charlize Theron, Daniel Radcliffe and Joseph Gordon Levitt to name a few, a well -crafted video clip in which Captain James T Kirk (William Shatner) travels back in time from the future in order to prevent Seth from ruining the Oscars-he’s always loved Star Trek gags, an appearance by Mark Wahlberg and titular star “Ted” to present an award and of course dozens of risqué gags about everything from slavery to Mel Gibson to Chris Brown, although it was sometimes hard to tell whether the oohs from the audience were mock oohs or, if he was going a little too near the knuckle for some.

Apart from our singing host, the entire night was a real musical extravaganza, with Catharine Zeta Jones performing “All That Jazz” from “Chicago”, Jennifer Hudson smashing it with “And I Am Telling You” from “Dreamgirls” and the cast of “Les Miserables” performing a medley of songs from the hit musical... Although no one seemed to be quite sure why “Chicago” and “Dreamgirls” were featured anyway it didn’t matter, they sounded ace. The musical numbers didn’t stop there however, as about an hour into the show , Halle Berry - who played Bond girl Jinx in “Die Another Day” came onstage to introduce a special Bond 50 year anniversary tribute, which disappointingly didn’t include a single Bond appearance, instead a montage video and Dame Shirley Bassey performing “Goldfinger” to a standing ovation - and that was it, puzzlingly, Adele also performed “Skyfall” for the first time live, but an hour after the Bond

Other highlights for me were the onstage appearance of 5 Avengers (no Black Widow, no Thor) Captain Kirk (the new one) and Uhura and Jennifer Lawrence tripping up the stairs on way to the stage!!

So, who won? Well, although no one swept the board, “Life of Pi” walked away with 4 statues including one of the biggies for best director, Ang Lee, as well as best original score, cinematography and visual effects.

“Les Miserables” took 3 home nobody was shocked to learn Anne Hathaway won best supporting actress, it also nabbed hair and makeup and sound mixing.

“Argo”, thought of as a bit of an outsider scooped the big one for big bearded Ben Affleck - his baby scooped best picture for him and his cast and crew, as well as film editing and adapted screenplay.

Other notable awards were a best supporting actor award for Christoph Waltz for “Django Unchained”, his 2nd supporting actor award for a Quentin Tarantino picture (he also won for “Inglorious Basterds”) and best animated picture for “Brave”. No one was surprised when Adele tearfully picked up best song for “Skyfall”, but the Bond movie of the same name also was one movie, along with Bin Laden drama “Zero Dark Thirty” that tied in first place for the best sound editing Oscar, a tie has only happened once before, way back in 1969 when Barbara Streisand and Katherine Hepburn both won best actress for “Funny Girl” and “A Lion In Winter”.

So, I did say it was a “ beardy” awards night, one beard that missed out again (maybe Oscar just doesn’t like him) was Steven Spielberg - but I’m sure it was a huge consolation to him that the night really belonged to his leading man, Daniel Day Lewis who, as widely predicted made it an Oscar record by winning best actor for “Lincoln” (Beard!) his 3rd, having won for “My Left Foot” and “There Will Be Blood”. Presented the award by Meryl Streep to a stand-

GOOGLE LAuNCHES CHROMEBOOk PiXEl lAPTOP

GooGLE has unveiled its first touchscreen laptop in an effort to beat off competition by rivals Microsoft and Apple. the new Chromebook Pixel includes a 13 inch display screen that responds to the touch or swipe of the finger. that is also a key feature of Windows 8, Microsoft’s latest operating system for PCs launched last

year. the new laptop’s high-resolution screen also displays 239 pixels per inch, slightly more than Apple’s MacBooks with high-resolution retina displays.

Announcing the move on its website, Google said the device “Brings together the best in hardware, software and design to inspire the next generation of Chromebooks. It’s one of the most exciting times in the history of personal computing,

thanks to a rapid pace of change, innovation and consumer adoption of devices.

Our goal is to continue to push the experience forward for everyone,” it added.

A Chromebook Pixel laptop with Wi-Fi and 32GB of flash storage costs £856, and a 64GB machine that can connect on a 4G LTE network £988.

A review by TechCrunch suggests while the Chromebook Pixel is “arguably one of the best-looking laptops ever made”, it is more expensive than Microsoft’s

Surface Pro and Apple’s MacBook Air, both of which cost £655 and £786, respectively.

It also falls short in terms of local storage, which is described as “tiny” compared to the MacBook Air, which offers 128GB. The Chromebook Pixel comes hot on the heels of the launch of Google’s Glass Explorers, which work in a similar way to smartphones and use voice-activation to connect to the internet, take pictures and perform other functions.

A Sticky Situation

A LorrY carrying a large load of glue spilled its cargo onto a main road, caused chaos and major traffic disruption across the A76 at Sanquhar in Dumfries and Galloway, meaning a length of the route between Dumfries and Cumnock in East Ayrshire had to close.

The glue container, which was carrying around 19 tons, burst when the lorry jackknifed on the road, police said. Remembering Fife Doctor Who: origins

i was shocked and saddened last week to hear about the death of fife Sinclaire. Unfortunately i heard too late to make last week’s edition so i’d like to express my heartfelt sadness at the loss of a great entertainer and a wonderful person.

Many people won’t realise that myself and Fife have known each other for over 30 years.

I trained at the same arts school, The International Arts centre in Leicester and owe a lot to Fifes Father, Eddie, and even more to Eddie’s wife, Ann Oliver, who owned that school and set me on the path to life as an entertainer.

It was in fact I, who took over from Fife in “ City Limits” when he left to perform in shows all over the world, (I think he left for Japan but my memory is vague) and it was one of my earliest professional jobs with Dawn and Debbie (the female members of the group), and some of my earliest memories of singing are with “City Limits” in venues all over the Leicestershire area- as well as being taken to a hairdresser to have my hair bleached White blonde for the job - I had scabs on my scalp for a week!

I always looked at Fife as a “famous singer” whenever he came back to the Arts centre for a visit during a break from his world travelsso it was a shock when many years later when I was working abroad right here in Tenerife, I heard a familiar voice behind me say “Hello

Marc, what are you doing here?”

But that was years ago when I’d just arrived and I’m sorry to say we lost touch again in-fact I had no idea Fife was still here, I’d assumed like many others he had decided to leave.

I always looked up to him as a person and an entertainer and I’d like to express my deepest sympathy to Fife’s friends and family- you’ll be sorely missed.

Apes sequel gets new human star

“Dawn of the planet of the Apes”, the upcoming sequel to the huge hit “rise of the planet of the Apes” (2011) has just signed up actor Jason Clarke to take the lead human role, replacing James franco’s character who looks unlikely to return.

Not much is known about the plot but I do know its set 15 years after “Rise” and part of the story follows a group of scientists struggling to survive in San Francisco. Clarke, most famous for his role in “Zero Dark Thirty”, could possibly play one of the scientists, likely to be searching for a cure for the virus which began wiping out the human race at the end of the first film.

Andy Serkis reprises his role as the leader of the Apes, Caeser, and with the 15 year gap in the story it will be interesting to see how the apes have progressed and how well Caeser is

Doctor Who is being made into a movie before every “Whovian” starts imagining a 200 million dollar Hollywood blockbuster let me explain a tV movie is currently in production, a dramatisation that tells the remarkable story of the origins of the original 60’s tV series.

Mark Gatiss, who also regularly writes scripts for “Doctor Who” and has dreamed of bringing this project to life for more than 12 years.

Madonna Heads up Billboards Earnings List

BiLLBoArD Magazine’s annual list of 40 top money makers has named Madonna as the biggest money maker in the music industry for the second time in five years. the Material Girl’s world tour helped the 54-year-old take home almost $34.6m (£23m) last year.

It said she earned an estimated $32m (£21m), more than 90% of her revenue, from her 88 date MDNA tour, which was the biggest tour of 2012. She led the list in 2008 due to her tour income, is the only woman in the top 10 this year.

Second place on the list was Bruce Springsteen, whose $33.4m (£22m) was also mainly driven by touring, playing to sold-out stadiums and arenas. The superstar released his number-one album Wrecking Ball last year, and earned 92% of his revenue from live shows where strong merchandise sales also boosted takings.

Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters came a distant third with earnings of $21m (£13.9m) largely from The Wall Live tour. Van Halen were fourth with $20m (£13.2m) after touring in support of their

album A Different Kind Of Truth.

Country music veteran Kenny Chesney, the Dave Matthews Band, country stars Tim McGraw and Jason Aldean, and Coldplay came next on the list. Justin Bieber was 10th, earning almost $16m (£10.6m), of which about $10m (£6.6m) came from his sold-out Believe arena tour.

“The entire Top 10 averaged 84.2% of their income from concerts,” said Billboard. “The number would have been higher if not for Justin Bieber’s m e re 6 0 .1 % share at No 1 0 dragging

down the average.”

However, touring was not vital for every act on the list.

Adele took the year out after having a baby, but still banked nearly $14m (£9.2m), putting her 11th in the rankings, due to continuing strong sales for her album 21.

Taylor Swift, who grabbed first place last year only managed 15th place as she has not been touring recently.

Her earnings came to $12.7m (£8.4m) after selling the most digital tracks in 2012. She sold more than three million digital albums and 15.6 million digital songs driven by her hit We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.

Bluesman Magic Slim Dies

MAGiC Slim, the US guitarist and singer who shaped the sound of Chicago electric blues, has died aged 75. His manager confirmed that he passed away in a Philadelphia hospital following health problems which had worsened in recent weeks, bleeding ulcers had sent the musician to hospital, but that he also suffered from heart, lung and kidney ailments.

Slim, real name Morris Holt, was one of the leading lights in the blues scene during the 1960’s and was a young contemporary of Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. The musician and his backing band, the Teardrops, were known for their raw electric blues style.

His manager, Marty Salzman, said: “If you were going to take somebody who’d never seen blues to one of their shows, it would be like putting them in a time machine and putting them in 1962. No frills, no rock ‘n’ roll. It was just straight-ahead, real-deal blues.”

Slim and his band were still active on the music scene, touring and releasing a record of cover versions last year.

Growing up in the cotton fields of Missis-

sippi, the bluesman switched to guitar from piano after losing his little finger on his right hand in an accident. After an unsuccessful bid in the Chicago scene in 1955, Slim returned home and recruited his brothers for his backing band. The three men returned to the city and established themselves solidly in its music scene.

I am so glad that I don’t have anything to do with Oscar Pistorius.

The athlete has recently been charged with murder.

His brother is also going to be appearing in court over the death of a woman motorcyclist. On top of that, the policeman who charged Oscar for murder has been taken off the case as he too is connected to the death of another person. It sounds like they should all live in Midsomer!

Loony Lingo

English must be a nightmare for foreigners to learn. We don’t seem to stick to any rules when we speak. For instance, we say Six-ty, seventy, eight-y and ninety, so why don’t we say one-ty, two-ty. three-ty and five-ty?

Why isn’t cheese the plural of choose? If teachers teach and teachers taught, why don’t we say preachers preach and preachers praught?

If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what do humanitarians eat?

It must be confusing for some when we ship things by truck, and send cargo by ship.

What Price Fame?

This is absolutely no surprise to me at all. I am surprised; however, that the British press think that people are still bothered with what she gets up to.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the next headline was “Katie Price, divorced ..... Again”.

Carnival is great fun and the final parade at Puerto de la Cruz was no exception.

Everyone turned out in costume and as usual, that included a large number of British Residents who get involved every year. Many

people come to Puerto De La Cruz especially because it is carnival time each year. Their suitcases are packed with more fancy dress than real clothes.

I’m not surprised that some of them wear the same shirt for the whole of their holiday!

Who Would Have Believed It?

When the stars are out,

they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. English muffins weren’t invented in England and French fries come from Belgium. How can slim chance, no chance and fat chance’ be the same, while ‘ wise man and a wise guy’ are opposites?

We have a great language.

We are able to use it in so many ways, but you have to admit. It must be very confusing for some people to get to grips with!

Doctor Who will be 50 years old this year. The programme has remained popular for half a century. When you look at some of the early episodes it is hard to imagine how it survived, but it did.

The second story they filmed featured the Daleks for the first time and it catapulted the show to the top of the ratings. The doctor himself is over 1,000 years old and he’s had 37 official companions over the years.

My all-time favourite is Sarah Jane Smith.

Nevertheless, the show is strong in the ratings and in four weeks’ time it returns to our screens. You’ll find me behind the sofa!

AN investigation has been launched in Egypt after 19 people, including two Britons and a UK resident, died in a hot air balloon crash. Luxor Governor Ezzat Saad imposed an immediate ban on all hot air balloon flights in the province as Prime Minister Hisham Qandil ordered the investigation. four investigating teams have been established to find out the causes of the crash.

One of the investigation teams has already established that the balloon company, Sky Cruise, had passed a routine inspection by the Civil Aviation Ministry earlier this month. An initial probe has ruled out any criminal activity as a cause of the accident, Egypt’s official MENA news agency reported.

British nationals Yvonne Rennie, from Perth, Scotland, and Joe Bampton,40, and Mr Bampton’s partner, Hungari-

an-born UK resident Suzanna Gyetvai, 34, from Clapham were named as being among those killed.

Mrs Rennie’s husband Michael, 49, is in hospital after he survived by leaping from the balloon before it exploded. Witnesses said they heard a loud blast before seeing plumes of smoke as the balloon caught fire. People were seen jumping out from “about the height of a sevenstorey building”. A spokeswoman at Luxor international hospital said Mr Rennie was in a stable condition.

The other tourists on board, including holidaymakers from France, Hong Kong and Japan, were all thought to have died in the explosion.

The only other survivor of the crash was the pilot, an Egyptian man, who is in hospital with burns to 60% of his body.

Officials said the balloon, which was carrying 21 people and flying at 1,000ft, caught fire and exploded during a trip at sunrise. It plunged into sugar cane fields as it travelled over Qurna, in Luxor’s West Bank.

Witness Christopher Michel was travelling in one of several balloons in the air above Luxor early on Tuesday morning: “I was in one of about eight balloons that were flying that morning. We were approaching landing ... coming down in a remote field just outside of Luxor. We heard a loud explosion behind us, and I looked back and saw lots of smoke. It wasn’t immediately clear that it was a balloon. We were surrounded by the balloons that had been flying with us. Then we could see the reaction of the pilot on the balloon and he said that this hasn’t happened in a long time.”

The Foreign Office said it was aware of the reports about the possibility of British casualties. “We are making inquiries,” a spokesman said.

Hot air ballooning is popular with tourists who visit Luxor to see its ancient temples and the tombs of the Valley of the Kings. But the activity is not without its dangers. In April 2009, 16 people were hurt, including two British women, when a balloon crashed during a tour of Luxor. The bal-

loon was believed to have hit a mobile phone transmission tower near the banks of the Nile.

Following the 2009 crash, early morning hot air balloon flights over the Valley

of the Kings were suspended for six months while safety measures were tightened up.

During the break, all 42 pilots from the eight companies who operate flights underwent extra training.

A notice on the Foreign Office website warns tourists: “There were three serious hot air balloon accidents in Luxor in 2009. You should consider the operator’s safety arrangements carefully.”

Luxury Villa Torviscas Alto

This beautiful detached luxury villa is located in the residential area of Torviscas Alto from which you have breathtaking views and a very peaceful and pleasant location.

Believe You Can Fly!

California-based Martin Aircraft Company has unveiled a jetpack which its makers say could be used by the emergency services, the military or for leisure. Costing £66,000 the aircraft can fly up to a mile high, reach a speed of 62mph and is able to take off from small spaces.

A purpose-built petrol engine powers twin-ducted fans that produce enough thrust to lift the craft and pilot in vertical take-off and landing, and enable sustained flight. The engine is designed

to an aviation industry standard to protect the pilot and includes a parachute The makers took the 10 years to develop the jetpack, which weighs 140kg and say it is easy to learn how to fly the machine which has an automated hover function.

According to the firm’s founder, Glenn N Martin, the craft is creating a new market in the aviation and recreational vehicle industry.

Initially it was designed with only leisure in mind but the developers have extended the scope of its use to other sectors, including emergency response, defence and recreation, with numerous appli-

cations in each sector: “We’ve had a lot of interests from special forces. We’ve had a lot of interests for using it to take food to troops or a 100kg (load) of something to troops. This can fly up and down, straight in the city. It is a lot more cost effective than the helicopter and you don’t need to train pilots to fly. Anybody can fly.”

People have been experiencing what it is like flying the machine in a simulator at the Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) 2013 in Abu Dhabi, one of the world’s largest fairs for defence technology and military equipment.

Sweet Bangkok Beef

Sticky Rice

As promised to one of our readers who wrote in a while ago, here’s another taste of Thailand, that isn’t spicy, easy to make and gets your taste buds going.

Ingredients 1 Kilo Beef cut into fine strips (Try and use a good cut of meat like sirloin or fillet if your budget allows) 2 cloves of Garlic finely chopped 1 tsp. salt

½ tsp. black pepper 4 large tbsp. sweet chilli sauce (or Honey) 4 large tbsp. dark soy sauce 1 small handful of finely chopped fresh basil 1 tbsp. fish sauce (optional) Pinch ground ginger (optional)

Method:

First of all you need to marinade the meat for as long as possible.

Mix all the ingredients together and place it in a sealed food bag or a good sealed plastic container. Ensure the meat is totally coated in the marinade and put it in the fridge for 24 hours.

When your meat is marinated, get a wok or large pan heated to a high temperature with 1 tbsp. Olive oil. Throw the meat in and toss it about until it is sealed. (About 4 minutes).

Don’t overcook it otherwise it will become tough and the honey coating will burn. If you prefer, add some shredded mixed peppers and sliced onion into the wok for a flavoursome stir fry!

Serve it with traditional Thai sticky rice (see additional recipe) or even a lush green salad.

Sticky rice is found everywhere in Thailand, and making it is very easy. It’s totally different, unique and gives that meal a real authentic taste of the Far East.

Sticky rice also known as sweet rice or gluttonous rice is available at all Asian supermarkets, and is traditionally cooked in a bamboo steamer, but don’t worry if you don’t have one of them or even the sweet rice, other grains of rice and cooking methods work just as well!

How to make it:

1 cup of medium grain rice (soak it in a bowl of water for 24 hours, then rinse it well until the water runs clear) when you’re ready to cook it, set a large pan with a small amount of water on to boil. Put the rice in a colander or sieve and try to spread it out evenly. Cover it with a lid or piece of foil and place it over the boiling pan. Steam it for a good 45 minutes – making sure the pan doesn’t boil dry.

Check the rice is cooked and to serve it press it together. It should stick perfectly!

Calico Cat Café

The first menu you’ll see at Calico Cat Café in Tokyo has nothing to do with food: it’s the cat selection. But you won’t be dining on any of these adorable felines – they’re just there to provide some companionship while you sip a cup of tea. The watchful staff ensures that guests treat the cats respectfully, and provide complimentary bags of dried cat food that can be used to attract your desired playmate. For many Tokyo residents, owning a cat isn’t realistic, so the city’s 30-odd cat cafés give them a chance to enjoy some “commitment-free cat stroking”.

Ice Restaurant in Dubai

Almost everything at the restaurant is sculpted out of ice.

Diners will sit on ice benches or chairs, eat at ice tables, out of ice plates, and drink from ice glasses served from a bar made of ice.

The restaurant is Dubai-based Sharaf Group’s enterprise while technical inputs came from Canadabased Ice culture Inc., who are credited with building ice lounges around the world.

‘i hate having to choose’ ‘Mum found my morning after pill’

My parents divorced four years ago. Since then me and my sister have had to choose between them for every family occasion like birthdays, Christmas and Easter.

I hate having to choose between them and tell one of them that we can’t see each other. Why do they have to be so petty?

Somebody somewhere needs to bang their flipping heads together!

I’ve never understood how two loving parents can cause their offspring so many problems just because they’ve decided to end their relationship.

One thing that might help both you and your sister is to take the onus off yourselves and place it firmly at the feet of your parents. When the next birthday comes along, plan to celebrate it on neutral territory and tell your mum and dad that they can decide whether or not to come along.

Of course, tell them both you’d love them to be there and that any good parent would bury the hatchet for just a few hours for the sake of their kids.

I had a one night stand recently and took the morning after pill just to be safe. The problem is that my mum found the packaging in my bin and she’s gone mad.

She screamed at me, calling me a slag and she’s been ignoring me ever since. I’m not proud of my one night stand but I thought what I did was the most responsible thing to do in that situation. How can I make her see that?

The alternative is to go on year after year, agonising over which one you invite along and that’s just not fair on you is it?

Give it a go, you never know, your parents may just come to their senses!

I think your mums being a little harsh on you too Chelsea.

Its sounds to me that you did exactly the right thing - for you.

Your mum is obviously shocked that you had one night stand and I guess I would be too if I found out something like this. Don’t be too hard on her, she clearly loves and cares about you.

‘Everyone’s leaving me’

I live in a small town and since I finished college a year ago more and more of my friends have left to move to London or aboard.

I feel really lonely here but I’m too scared to do anything about it. I’d miss my family too much. Am I just a complete wimp?

You’re not a wimp at all Nat! It’s only natural for you miss your friends isn’t it? The thing is, life is about

changes and adapting to those changes.

Your friends are only a phone call or a train ride away, so they haven’t really left you have they? The world is a very small place these days and you can travel to see your friends quite easily. What you need to do is start thinking about what you want from life. Rather than worrying yourself over things like distance, think about your

future and your career.

Whether you stay where you are or move to be nearer your old friends, you’ll always be faced with situations like this.

That’s the way life goes.

One thing I can tell you for sure is that you’re wasting precious time right now worrying about all the wrong things.

Forget everybody else and think about number one.

The other day I took my 77-year-old Nan shopping and she brought her wheelie trolley with her.

When we got home she unloaded loads of extra stuff that she hadn’t paid for including batteries for her torch, a bottle of gin, and a piece of ham.

I’d been with her at the till and she definitely hadn’t paid for them, so I’m convinced she stole them.

I was absolutely gobsmacked and always thought she was a law-abiding old lady with morals. When I asked her if she was short of money she got all defensive and quickly changed the subject.

My mum would be heartbroken if she knew her mum was a thief, but I don’t know what to do. If she keeps doing it she could end up in trouble with the police but how can I talk to her when she won’t admit there’s a problem?

This is a difficult one for me to answer Veronica as I don`t know your Gran. Three things leap off the page at me but at the end of the day, you have to work this one out for yourself.

Firstly, your sweet old

Gran may well be a very cunning thief who knows exactly what she’s doing, if you’re able to prove that to yourself beyond all doubts then threatening to go to the police or your mum about this may shock her into retiring from a life of crime.

Secondly, this whole thing could be a symptom of some kind of illness which, if left untreated could lead to more trouble. Again, you’ll need proof rather than just suspicions before you start trying to tackle anything like that and you’ll also need your Gran to admit that she has a problem.

If this second possibility turns out to be a reality then a GP will be able to help. Finally, you could be a victim of your own imagination and there could be a perfectly reasonable explanation for the whole thing. The only way forward is to keep trying to talk this through and stress that you want to help rather than cause trouble.

Whatever you decide to do, try not to carry this burden alone, I know you say your mum would be upset but the truth is, she would probably be more upset if you kept this from her.

This new ITV documentary reflects on the groundbreaking career of Laurie Cunningham, the first black footballer to pull on an England shirt whose impact on the game continues to be felt decades after he was killed in a car accident aged just 33.

Featuring first-hand accounts from key figures in British and European football from the 1970s to the current day, this documentary includes interviews with his team-mates at Leyton Orient, West Bromwich Albion and Real Madrid including Cyrille Regis and Vicente Del Bosque, as well as his managers including Ron Atkinson, members of his fam-

ily and former players such as Paul Ince, John Barnes, Les Ferdinand, Ian Wright and Mark Bright, whose ascent to the top of the game was inspired by the skilful winger.

Now, as the issue of racism within football is high on the game’s current agenda, this programme is a timely reflection on the social impact of Laurie’s rise during an era when black players routinely faced torrents of racist abuse from the terraces in England. Known as one of the legendary ‘Three Degrees’ at West Brom alongside Regis and Brendon Batson - the first time an English team had fielded a trio of black footballers - Laurie was one of the first black English players to gain a high profile and the programme explores how he dealt with the prejudice he encountered.

According to his contemporaries, the promising player described as the “Young Pele” by the press wouldn’t allow racist chanting at football grounds to intimidate him.

Bar 180B 6 v 4 Leones Two evenly matched teams battled it out, Leones opened the scoring with Steve seeing off the challenge of Nikki the Bar 180 crew then came back with wins from captain Graeme and long-time absentee Daryn taking the next two frames. Leones Phil to take the 4th and level the score. Bar 180 took both doubles with the first being by default from a Simon in off. Leones rallied the troops at the break and came back strong taking the first two singles in the second half to level the score, 4-4, great potting from both players.

Thomas and Phil had a tense game for that all important draw securing frame with Thomas being the victor after god knows how many

attempts at the black. It then came down to the all-important last leg, Bar180 looking for the win and Leones a chance to take it to a playoff game. Graeme started strong and soon cleared 5 balls putting the pressure on Simon.

Simon played some great pots and soon pushed the pressure back on the home side. It was almost a fatal mistake by Graeme when he went in off only for the black to stick in the jaws. The pressure seemed to get to Simon a little as he went out of position to leave Graeme a simple tap in to win the match for the Bar 180 crew.

The match decider was played to a high standard, with Victor cutting the black ball in the bottom left hand pocket as the ball dropped in - it was like watching slow motion as the white ball made contact with the remaining red sliding along the cushion and dropping into the opposite pocket.

HAMiSH rutherford did his best to frustrate England during the second day of their tour match against a New Zealand xi in Queenstown.

Rutherford, pushing hard for a Test debut, had been a thorn in England’s side as he helped the hosts to 2246 at stumps - still 202 runs behind the tourists.

The opener finished with 90, with his knock coming off 149 deliveries and including 13 fours and a six.

However England’s attack, which had struggled to make in-roads into the New Zealand innings early on, were able to wrestle back control of the match by the close.

Graeme Swann got the first breakthrough when he trapped Tom Latham leg before with the first ball of the afternoon session, while Carl Cachopa managed just six before he was caught by the off-spinner at second slip when Stuart Broad found some extra bounce.

Khan will fight in the UK for the first time since be defeated Paul McCloskey in Manchester exactly two years ago when he faces Diaz at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield on April 27.

Diaz twice won the IBF lightweight title but has not figured at the highest level since 2007, since when he has moved up to welterweight.

The 33-year-old has beaten 29 of his 40 victims via stoppage but has also lost seven times with five inside the distance.

However, it is these qualities that Khan believes will make for an interesting fight.

“It’s been two years since I last fought in the United Kingdom and I can’t wait to get in the ring in front of my fans,” Khan said.

“Julio Diaz is a former world champion and a very dangerous opponent who is coming off an impressive performance in his last fight.

Energy Oscar De La Hoya, president of Golden Boy Promotions, expects Khan to be energised by fighting on home soil.

“We’re excited to return to England and bring the loyal British fans the return of Amir Khan on April 27,” he said.

“Amir is closing in on a shot at regaining his world champion status and I know he’s going to use the energy from the crowd in Sheffield to motivate him.

“Standing in his way will be

a dangerous opponent in Julio Diaz who is on a hot streak of his own that he expects to keep intact in England.”

Diaz recorded two stoppage wins last year before drawing with unbeaten prospect Shawn Porter in December.

“I’m not going to England for the fight to go to the scorecards. I’m fighting for the knockout,” said the Californiabased Mexican.

“I know the knockout is the only thing that will get me the win, so I’m training extra hard already in order to get a victory on Khan’s home turf. I’m a heavy hitter and he can’t take a punch, so to me, that is the perfect combination.”

rAfA Benitez has remarkably hit out at Chelsea for referring to him as ‘interim’ manager and confirmed he would be leaving the club at the end of the current season.

In an astonishing outburst, speaking after the Blues’ 2-0 FA Cup win over Middlesbrough, Benitez turned on the section of fans who continue to vent their frustration at the Spaniard.

Benitez revealed that he knew nothing about being appointed as interim boss and felt that was a mistake by the Premier League club.

“I have a title, someone decided the title would be interim.

Why? Just in case,” he said.

“OK fine, if they want to blame me for everything that is wrong and then they said they would put interim just in case. Fine, that is your decision, I don’t agree but that is your decision, and now everybody has to take responsibility.

“If we are in the Champions League I will be the happiest man in the world but the next year I would leave anyway because I finish my contract so they don’t need to worry about me. They have to concentrate on supporting the team.

“I have a contract until the end of the season, that’s it, so they don’t need to worry about me.

“It was a surprise for me, [the title] interim. I have a contract to the end of the season, I said before I have to do my job, that’s it but this group with [their] agenda they carry on and I think it is wrong because it is bad for the team.

“Someone decided and I think that was mistake. It’s very clear, I don’t know who, but it was mistake.

“Everybody is interim, because after you there is another one. In this case they didn’t have anyone so why did they put interim? It’s just to say to everyone that he was in Liverpool and then just in case we will put interim and then we wash our hands.

“I can’t change the titles and the perception so it doesn’t matter now. What I have to do is be sure that I give 100 per cent every single day. They will know I am trying to do my best.

“The manager is the manager, one month, three months, seven months it doesn’t matter.

“I think the reason why the group of fans is not happy is because I was Liverpool manager, we played in the Champions League, massive games, that’s it. You cannot change that, they were really good, we were really good, it was a confrontation at this stage.

“Now I am the manager, and a professional. I want to clarify I will do my best until the last minute but if they carry on with this agenda they are damaging the club and the team

and next year if we cannot achieve the top four, they have to take a bit of responsibility.

“I didn’t know about the title, I have an agent and I was surprised but they couldn’t change things because they announced that. I thought it was a mistake but I still couldn’t change the interim [title].”

Wasting time Benitez insists that the fans are not showing him the respect he is due, with many supporters showing their displeasure after he was brought in to replace Roberto Di Matteo.

“I have been in charge in football for 26 years, I won the Champions League, I won the FIFA World Club Cup, the FA Cup, the Italian Super Cup, the Spanish league twice, nine trophies - all the trophies you can win at club level so this group of fans are not making any favourites with the team and they are singing and wasting time preparing banners,” he said.

“And it is because someone made a mistake - they put my title interim manager, and I will leave at the end of the season so they don’t need to waste their time with me, they have to concentrate on supporting the team, that is what they have to do. Every game if they continue singing and they continue preparing banners, they are wasting time.

“What they have to do is support the team, if we cannot achieve what we expect to achieve which is to be in the top four and Champions League for next year, I will leave and they will stay in the Europa League and they have to take responsibility too. If they put players under pressure or they did not create a good atmosphere in Stamford Bridge they are making a big mistake as the rest of the fans would like to see them in the Champions League next year.

“So it would be much better for everyone to support the team and back the players, I am the manager and will manage the team, I like to manage players and not names, and I will make decisions and at the end of the season I will leave anyway as I am interim, as they say, they are wasting time.

“I have proved in these last months I want to win every sin-

gle game, I am professional and if we win I will be the happiest in the world but if a group of fans continue with their agenda and wasting time it is their decision.

“I am really pleased here, I have a top side and a good group of players who work hard and it is a top club, it is not a problem - the problem is a group of people who can say what they want but they have to support the team and they don’t need to worry about me as I will leave at the end of the season. I will do my job and try and win every game until the last minute.

“It is a team in transition - in the past you had Drogba, Essien, Kalou - a talented team with experience and now we have a group with talent but it is a time of transition, they need to realise that when I came here the team was not in the Champions League and will do my best until the last minute. They are damaging the image of the club and the other fans because people think that is all the fans.

“I will do my job and I will try to do my best. It will be easier at Stamford Bridge and have the fans supporting the team instead of thinking of what can we do, what can we say.”

Asked how long he would be in charge, Benitez insisted as far as he knew it would be June, when his deal runs out.

“I will be manager until the last minute when somebody decides no, you won’t be here in June,” he continued.

“I will do my job, no problem, to manage is to decide the team, the subs and everything until the end. I did it for 26 years with nine titles and a lot of trophies in different countries, so I think I have enough experience. So if they want to sing and prepare banners, they have to take responsibility too.

“They have to decide what they want to do. What I’ve said is what I’ve done in my life as a professional and what I want to do in the future, hopefully win trophies too.

“A group of fans have an agenda. I will do my job until the last day, and after I will be really pleased if we can win trophies or be in the top four, three, two. I will do my job until the end.”

yOuNg guNS FiRE CD TENERiFE TO gREATER glORy Time for another rising star, 19 year old forward Ayoze Perez replaced Cristo, two more midweek goals for the B team will have strengthened the interest of QPR, Espanyol and other suitors, his speed and hunger to score again stood out in his brief appearance. Suso was still full of trickery, Ayoze hit the bar, and Guillem Marti was unlucky not to score soon after leaving the bench. The final whistle marked a job well done, another good crowd of 8,651, and the lead increased to eight points at the top of the table. Atletico Madrid B beckons this Sunday.

A rare period of stability has arrived at CD Tenerife after seasons of a constantly revolving door for coaches. Alvaro Cervera is being rewarded for his nurturing of the squad with a two year contract extension that keeps him calling the shots until June 2015.

WAS it sunburn, indigestion, or a middle aged flush, no none of them, just the warm contented glow of a smooth 2-0 home win for CD tenerife over real Madrid C. this was a satisfying victory on so many levels, great team play and commitment, a positive attitude, and the emergence of yet another home grown young talent.

Alberto Jimenez made his home debut in the centre of defence and proved to be not just a towering physical presence but also a good tackler and a threat in the air when going forward. The local born 20-year-old slotted in nicely alongside Bruno another B team product that has made tremendous strides this season.

Suso showed the never say die spirit in the team, a break down the right saw the ball heading safely to the visiting keeper but he raced in

almost caught the stopper off guard as he came out to collect the ball. Aridane was a constant menace to the Madrid defence, Derik fouled him at the end of the half and Loro sent a majestic free kick curling low past the grasping hand of goalie Sobrino.

The second half was just as one sided but without further goals, Cristo was stopped in his goal bound tracks by the ref and a tempting Suso cross cleared the goal mouth without a boot or head to finish it off. Another Suso raid found the head of Aridane, only a one handed save stopped it from increasing the lead. Mariano came on for Madrid and looked like he could give them a cutting edge but it was short lived. One of the most pleasing aspects of the game was the way Tenerife worked for each other, Aridane was a prime example, the awkward fall that led to him being subbed came from jumping to make a defensive challenge.

The glimmer of hope raised by the remarkable 2-1 home win over Real Oviedo was snuffed out as CD Marino crashed 3-0 at Fuenlabrada. A plucky performance kept the home side at bay until 17 minutes from time despite two sending’s off for the Las Americas side.

Goalie Alberto carried on his defiant form in the first half in a stubborn rear guard action.

Fifth placed Fuenlabrada had plenty of chances but couldn’t convert them, quite appropriate as they play in the Fernando Torres stadium named after the home town hero.

Marino were again grateful to Alberto for an early save in the second half but things started

Ibrahim Will Fight To Keep His Title

Candelaria born cruiser weight Ibrahim Lopez became Spanish champion last October when he knocked out Luis Rodriguez in the 8th round in Santa Cruz to take the vacant crown. On 16th March in his first defence he is looking to repel Colombian Alex Matamoros with another powerful performance at the Pabellon Los Cristianos (the municipal sports centre next to the swimming pool). Ibrahim has an impressive record winning all seven professional fights but knows he will have to be at his best to conquer the hungry challenger.

There is also one inter island fight between Jonathan Garcia of Tenerife and Jerobe Santana of Gran Canaria.
