Well hello fellow damp ex-pats and tourists. We had a bit of weather this week then! I know that historically, February and November we can expect the only rainfall we generally get in a year, but really, that was just rude! Thankfully the damage seems to have been limited and casualties rare, so now all we have to do is repair the damage, wring out everything and get on with enjoying “proper” Tenerife weather.

Tenerife Weekly - 8th March - 14th March 2013 I couldn’t be more delighted to welcome our brand new columnist. Stand up Mr Steven Andrews. Steve is well known on the Island as he runs walking tours and knows everything there is to know horticultural here. He will be giving you tips on what to grow in your garden and balcony and how to look after your plants and how to encourage wildlife onto your doorstep. He is happy to answer your questions, so if you have any, drop me a line; editor@tenerife-weekly. com and I will pass them on. Bit of a spooky edition for you

Continued from page 1 Storm From Space

By Janet Anscombe

What a few days it’s been! The storm had been anticipated for a while, but there were hopes it would bypass the islands. Last Thursday, however, there was no longer any doubt: it was coming straight for us. On the Friday, we discovered that there was one storm, but two fronts, the first of which would start to batter us immediately, and the second, the big one, would arrive on the Sunday.

Once again the much maligned Spanish meteorological office got it spot on, with heavy rain forecast with,

even worse, extremely high winds, particularly at altitude. At first they were anticipated to gust to 100-120 km/h, but the alerts soon started to move from yellow to orange, predicting gusts to over 130 km/h – “hurricane strength”. In the event they far exceeded even that. It is very rare that Tenerife sees a red alert from Aemet, but we had two days of one this time. Gusts of 180km were frequent in the Teide national park, with one setting the record maximum of 200 km/h. Worst hit were the Arico area in the east and Guía de Isora in the west. Torrential rain and howling gales made travel all but impossible even for those who were prepared to disregard the official advice to hunker down and stay

indoors. Carnival events in Los Cristianos were suspended on Sunday, and the Santa Cruz market and Rastro were closed early by official order. By mid-afternoon, the regional government had announced a maximum security alert, putting its emergency plan in operation. Boats were even winched out of Los Gigantes harbour and taken away on lorries for safe keeping in municipal pounds. Public transport was understandably affected, with Fred Olsen shutting operations throughout the Canaries with the exception only of ferries between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura continuing to sail. Titsa too reported bus services badly hit by rock falls and tree debris. Flights were widely disrupted; though Tenerife’s two airports managed to remain open. The same could not be said for the schools, however, which to widespread delight among pupils and equally widespread despair among parents, all closed on Monday. Power cuts were forecast and duly plunged whole areas into darkness: in all, some 7,000 homes were affected by “outages”, particularly in the south-west, and most notably in the Granadilla, Guía de Isora, San Miguel and Arico areas. As the weather system now passes over the eastern islands and the clean-

up operation begins, it is a relief to see how light the damage has actually been. Sadly, Playa San Juan’s beach has been affected by debris washed down the barranco again despite the restoration and preventative works that were done after the last major storm, but this time at least no cars ended up on the sand! Up in the National Park, access roads were again closed while snow and ice were cleared, with the sight of a completely white Teide cone heralding the traditional snowball-on-the-car competitions once the roads were reopened on Tuesday afternoon. Elsewhere, there were a few collapsed walls, downed palm trees, and minor car damage – though one car was flattened in Playa de las Américas when a palm tree collapsed on its roof. As early even as midday on Tuesday, while the aftereffects of the storm were still being felt, ferry services and flights were getting back to normal and largely operating to schedule. Some say that these storms are getting more extreme, and certainly this one had the capacity to be very bad indeed. In the event, however, it left us really

quite unscathed, particularly compared to previous winter storms and the devastation they left behind. Many will remember Delta in late 2005, and the rains which hit Santa Cruz above all in Febru-

ary 2002, both of which left several deaths in their wake. I think we can count ourselves fortunate this time, and enjoy the increasingly rare and wonderful sight of a fully snow-covered Teide.

news On Tenerife’s Most haunted THe rOCK By Marc Craig

Police in Granadilla have solved a murder which took place in March in San Isidro last year. A thirty two-year-old man has been accused of causing the death of a forty one-year-old. A final reconstruction of events revealed that the victim was hit over the head with a bottle and then stabbed in the neck with a knife. That night, he had taken a taxi from Veronicas to San Isidro with another person. The suspect had been held in Tenerife 2 prison since July, and was identified as the person who sold the victim’s mobile phone. The Local Police force in Adeje has been restructured to form a specialist unit to attend to children and families. According to the mayor, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, it consists of two sub-inspectors, an official and four officers who will give a qualified service to a vulnerable segment of the population. The municipality of Guia de Isora plans to increase its luxury hotel capacity. Additional to the two current hotels, and the Villa Erques project, investors are interested in a five star hotel project on the Playa San Juan coast. February’s figures released today show a further 1,957 people are out of work in the Canary Islands, bringing the total unemployed across the islands to 291,474. The province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro) suffered more than Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote): in SCT, 1,163 more people are unemployed than in January, bringing the total to 136,767, whereas in LPGC, the number rose by 794, bringing the eastern province’s unemployed up to 154,707. The market traders at the famous Rastro in Santa Cruz are once again facing an uncertain future. This Rastro, which has become a popular tourist attraction, has provided an essential income for thousands of traders in Santa Cruz over the years, allowing them to reach the end of each month. The local residents are complaining of excessive noise and dirt in the area, the city council is pressurising them to move to another location, and there are doubts over the legality of the Rastro, which is next to the Nuestra Señora de la África market. Seventeen years after the event, a British man from Essex is in court, accused of killing another British citizen in Tenerife. He denies any implication in the death of Gerry Robert Walton, who drowned in the sea off Puerto Colón. The prosecution believes that the accused, Darren, grabbed Gerry by the legs when he was drunk, and threw him into the water. They have requested a prison sentence of twelve years and damages of a hundred and twenty thousand euros. The defence claims that Darren was trying to rescue Gerry, after he fell into the sea. The British and Spanish authorities have joined forces in the fight to identify benefit fraudsters. Sharing information, such as deaths of British nationals in Spain, helps the UK to ensure that pensions and benefits of the deceased are stopped quickly, to avoid large over-payments that will need to be paid back, and to help identify fraudsters who fail to report a death in order to continue fraudulently receiving the pension or benefit. One case, of a couple in Malaga who stole over thirty nine thousand pounds from the public purse, resulted in prison for both. For further details see page 13.

A FEW weeks back as you may have read, I was shocked to discover the relative youthfulness of this fair island. At only 2 or 3 million years old, in global terms it’s a baby. Thing is, that’s not to say Tenerife has no history, especially human history, it’s teeming with churches, cemeteries, colonial mansions and even a few castles - so why I wondered - why are there no ghost stories? There are no ghost tours advertised the way you often find in historic towns in England, and no talk of haunted houses. So, is it something the Canarians would rather keep quiet, for fear or superstitious reasons? - maybe the fact that the majority of the island’s Spanish/Canarian community are very religious, means they don’t like to discuss hauntings? Or is it just simply because there are no ghosts in Tenerife? Well, it turns out there are many ghost stories to tell once I started digging, both in the traditional sense, plus a couple of things that aren’t exactly ghostly, but are certainly quite spooky- so, turn out the lights, grab a candle - and don’t worry about that bump you just heard... Or that movement of cold air that just whispered by you..... 1 - Catalina and the well: In La Laguna, the Tenerife History Museum, formerly the Lercaro House, workers spoke anonymously, for fear of losing their jobs from a council who doesn’t want the museum to have any association with ghosts - of the troubled spirit of Catalina Lercaro, who haunts the hallways of the mansion. A wealthy heiress in the 16th century was being forced into an arranged marriage to an elderly man. Desperately unhappy she chose to end her life rather than go through with the wedding, by throwing herself into a deep well in the mansion grounds. Because she committed suicide the church refused to let her be buried in the cemetery, so the family hid her remains in the house and moved to La Orotava. The ghostly form of a young woman has been seen many times and at night you can hear phantom footsteps haunting the corridors. 2- The Haunted Tree:

In Vilaflor, stands the El Pino Gordo, an ancient Canary Pine Tree that is said to be haunted by Captain Pedro de Bracamonte, a Spanish sailor who arrived during the conquest. Legend says that he fell so deeply in love with a Guanche maiden that he kept her prisoner for fear of losing her. When she managed to escape , the Captains grief was so severe , he lay beneath the tree and died of a broken heart - the region was known at the time as Chasna and the Captain’s final words were “vi la flor de Chasna” (I saw the flower of Chasna) , hence the name Vilaflor. 3 - The Haunted Ravine: Barranco de Badajoz, a ravine near the Guimar pyramids has seen so much unexplained phenomena, UFOs, apparitions, winged beings and even abductions, it has led to claims that the ravine is a “portal” to another time or dimension. One such tale is “the girl with the pears”, sometime between 1890 and 1910 a young girl climbed down into the ravine searching for fruit to pick, she disappeared without a trace and no amount of searches turned up a single trace or clue of what happened. Then, decades later she reappeared and hadn’t aged at all. Had she travelled through time? 4 - Ghost Town: This is not an actual ghost story but it’s pretty spooky so I thought it worth mentioning. At the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939 a major health issue was leprosy, Tenerife had almost 200 documented cases and, believing there was no cure, it was decided the only solution was complete isolation away from the unaffected population. Work began on a “Leper colony” in Arico.

Residential areas, dining halls, hospital rooms and a church featuring a huge cross were all constructed, however when, in the forties a cure was discovered, work was abandoned and apart from being used as a military camp in the sixties, the area has remained a ghost town ever since. 5 - The Ghost Island. This one beats them all!! Most of you will know there are 7 Canary Islands, but did you know there is the legend of an eighth island, the mysterious “Ghost island of San Borondón”? San Borondón is the Canarian name of Saint Brendan, an Irish monk and the subject of a famous poem which tells of his adventures on the high seas. The legend goes that Brendan landed on a small island with trees and vegetation that suddenly began to sail off - he was on the back of a huge sea monster!! Since being conquered in the 15th century, stories have been told of an eighth island that appears then disappears to the west of La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera. Cloaked in mist, many sailors spoke of trying to reach its shores, only to see it vanish beneath the waves. So convinced of its existence it was listed in several international treaties concerning the Canary islands and given the name “Aprositus” the inaccessible. Many dozens of witnesses have claimed to have observed the lost island from the peaks of El Hierro and in the 18th century an expedition sailed from Santa Cruz as part of an official inquiry into the sightings. Well I hope you’ve enjoyed these spooky tales - I’ll leave you with this prose about our very own ghost island.....sweet dreams x “Let the guanche drums resound and the conch shells blow, for the mysterious island is appearing in the midst of the waves; here comes San Borondón, showing up in the mist like a queen with the surf as suite...”

We had kindly been donated the use of the golf in order to raise funds for Cancer Research in Tenerife which Swallows support throughout the winter months whilst they are here. Along with a lovely day weather wise and lots of laughter the eventual worthy winners were Ella (a very sprightly teenager of 91) and Bob, with Maureen coming a close second. We then sat down and enjoyed a three course Carvery all beautifully served and piping hot. The staff on the day could not have been more pleasant and helpful to us and are a credit to Vivo. The bonus to the afternoon was going outside and having a dance to Marc Craig, winner of Tenerife’s Entertainment Best Male Vocalist 2012. What a way to finish a fabulous afternoon of fun and laughter and even better 364 Euros was raised for cancer research. Many thanks to Chris for the donation, Lorna and all the staff for making our day so special. One of my Swallows commented she felt like royalty the way she had been treated - who can ask for more?

The day Carnaval Came To Town

By COLIn KIRBy LIKE a multi coloured invasion a fleet of coaches parked up in the middle of Playa de Las Americas and poured out streams of the bold, the bright, and the beauti-

ful. head dresses and tail feathers were preened and make up was applied with a flourish – and that was just the men. Arona Carnaval was ready to roll and shyness was banished as high heels clipped across the road to the gathering area outside Ve-

ronicas. It was very much a family affair, even the smallest and youngest party people were dressed to thrill as last minute adjustments were made and drums were given a good test bashing. This year’s theme of Brazil lent itself perfectly to a riot of noise and outrageous fashion but the most important ingredient

was enthusiasm. The parade may have been a little later and a few degrees cooler this year but once the groups started moving everyone was caught up in the spectacle as the procession danced its way down Avenida Rafael Puig Lluvina luring drinkers and diners up from their tables to enjoy a glimpse and a sneaky sway of the hips. Passing the hotels and shops the beat and the smiles were constant, in recent years there has been a bigger effort to involve Las Americas as well as Los Cristianos and the Saturday night tills were ringing out their happy approval. Turning off into Avenida de Las Americas a new audience awaited with plenty more cameras and videos poised to capture memories of how to party Tenerife style. Vista Sur marked the finish point, at least for the parade, the celebrations would continue well into the night and the costumes would get a quick spruce up before the rest of the week’s busy programme. This Saturday is the daytime party with music and dance in Los Cristianos from noon until 5pm at the showground in the centre of town and Plaza del Pescadora down by the old beach. A parade of musical groups leaves the Cultural Centre at 5.30 and heads down to the beach, if you have any energy left there is a grand dance at the showground from 11pm until the early hours. Sunday starts with a display of vintage cars down at the dock from 10.30 am, the big Coso parade starts at 4 pm from Paloma Beach Apartments and of course the dancing goes on into the night at the showground. One last big effort for Monday; the burial of the sardine heads off at 8 pm from the Cultural Centre with plenty of wild mourning around the back streets on the way to a funeral of flames and fireworks at the beach. Carnaval closes with your last chance for late, late dancing at the showground. Enjoy.

hi Marc, neil Warsop (kirk’s brother) has just sent me a copy of your article. It was a lovely tribute to him and we will display it on the notice board at the dance school. There is (sic) still many people there that remember you. If you are not able to make the funeral in the UK, we are having a celebration of his life in Tenerife. I will be over there for a week and would love to catch up with you. Hope to see you soon.

Miss Ann

hi Marc it’s neill fifes brother. Just read the note you put in the Tenerife weekly, it was lovely thank you for the kind words. We are struggling to get him flown home at the moment which is delaying the funeral but we are hoping that he can be laid to rest soon. Kind regards

hi Marc I just read your article regarding uFO sightings in Tenerife and thought you

might be interested in some photos I took on an early morning flight from TFS on november 13th 2012.

The sun rise was so lovely, I took a series of photos on my Ipad spread over about 15 mins. Later, when I looked at them I saw some strange saucer shaped objects on each photo. They appear to be similar to the object on the video taken on Oct 26th. I have sent one showing an object below the horizon and a couple above. If you would like to see more feel free to contact me as it is better to see the complete set of photos.

Dear Edior My wife`s mobility scooter was stolen on Tuesday 26th February 2013 between 1600 & 1800 hrs. The scooter was stolen from the high fenced gated and locked small garden area beneath our apartment in Las Galletas. The lock had been broken to gain access. The mobility scooter is a GO GO Elite Traveller LX having a black seat & frame with detachable blue plastic trims to the wheel arches and cover to the motor and rear wheel unit. The battery is a detachable 17 amp heavy duty dry cell unit. There is a black detachable basket fixed to the steering column and there was a black bag strapped to the seat back containing 2 walking sticks, (one folding & one rigid), two plastic waterproof covers and a pair of swimming shoes. The scooter can be quickly assembled/ disassembled and can be transported in most car boots. The theft has left my wife (Irene) without means of transport and she is unable to walk more than a few metres as she suffers from lupus, arthritis &

Facebook.com/TenerifeWeekly mixed connective tissue disease. She is now virtually a prisoner in the apartment. My wife is well known in Las Galletas often seen shopping or “walking” our black poodle, Dandee, from the scooter. The Guarda Civil in Playa Las Americas have been notified & the crime reference is:Atestado No.2013004896-00000765. If anyone has any information I would be pleased to hear from them or for them to contact the police. I am appalled that anyone can steal a disabled persons only means of transport and their independence. We have been visiting the Island for 30 years, the last 15 with a wheelchair or a disability scooter and never had any problems. A mobility company have told me that they have never heard of a mobility scooter being stolen and were equally shocked. If you have any information, please contact me;

The Chimpanzees Family Update

7

The group of 7 chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) that have been in Loro Parque for just one week, have adapted to their new home and will begin the integration process with the rest of the chimpanzees who have been there since 1982 shortly.

The adult male, his three females companions and three youngsters - one was born just ten days ago have quickly become adapted to their new enclosure, especially designed for this type of primate. In this facility they can explore everything, under the watchful eye of the visitors; hidden termite mounds, lush vegetation, relaxing waterfalls and beds at different levels and heights. After a fun filled day full of games and activities, especially prepared by their keepers, they can rest and relax whenever they feel like it. The next step is to integrate this family with the rest of the chimpanzees, rescued from the streets of Puerto de la Cruz. Loro Parque has made several changes to accommodate the integration by adding new áreas to their encosure..

Collections of speculative science fiction and cautionary tales make up the main library of his 22 published books but at 87 years old Tony Thorne MBE is just hitting his stride and has followed up three books of Tenerife Tall Tales with a first full length novel, Points Of View, accepted last year by a publisher in America. Soon after the first sequel neared completion a Canadian professor of screenplay writing started the ball rolling on a possible movie of the high tech adventure story.

Born in London Tony now splits each year between his Playa de la Arena home in Tenerife and his wife Eva’s native Austria but his mind is always racing away to new dimensions and possibilities. Robots, aliens, mad scientists, and misfiring technology fill the cynical pages of Tony’s work and it’s all based on a boundary breaking career in medical science and computers, the MBE came for pioneering work in high temperature processing and low temperature surgery. Selling his first two short stories in 1953 his writing talents took a back seat until retirement at 80 as travel and starting up five separate companies kept him busy. Then the words and ideas were allowed to flow again but he still had to learn new skills. “The writing came fairly easy, it was the marketing and promoting that took time”. Those newly acquired skills soon opened up international doors as Tony did everything from making the book covers from collages to harnessing the internet and new publishing meth-

Tony’s Tenerife Mysteries To Invade The Big Screen?

ods. Most of Tony’s output is available as E books through Amazon and WH Smith, and in Kindle versions. Tenerife Tall Tales feature strange creatures and machines in macabre stories set in well known locations around our island. Recurring stories about Hologhosts unlocked living memories of Tenerife’s turbulent past captured in natural memory chips made out of volcanic rocks. An American film production agent took an interest in these but that project

is on the back burner for now. A professor from the University of Toronto Screenplay Writing Department has now picked up on Points Of View and has got an agent from a production company involved. A chunk of the novel is set in Tenerife, another great promotional opportunity for the island. While the film dream slowly develops Tony is still brimming with more story ideas and has just completed his first sequel to Points Of View and is working on a third adventure. He

has also had some of the Tenerife Tall Tales published in Spanish as Tenerife Cuentos Especulativo. When Tony was living in the Channel Island of Guernsey he bought one of the original Apple computers and realized there wasn’t much software for them so he wrote his own business programs for himself and big organizations like the local police and later hospitals in Bristol, and quarries in Somerset. That ability to work around problems and create the unconven-

tional fires his imagination, anything is possible in Tony’s pages but the cynic in him will ensure not every plot goes exactly to plan. Open a doorway to his World at www.tonythorne.com

Points Of View by Tony Thorne MBE

There was no radioactive accident for Horace Mayberry, no spandex costume to hide inside, and no stunning siren hammering on his door. Tony Thorne’s hero is much more down to earth, even as a spy in his dreams, things don’t quite pan out as expected. What he does have is an engaging manner and a Boys Own spirit of adventure but will that be enough to carry him through? Born blind but suddenly chosen to receive state of the art Nanotronic Bio Vision eyes, Horace greets his new sighted world with enthusiasm and innocence. Tony Thorne draws on a lifetime of scientific engineering to give plausibility to the self evolving powers of his hero’s eyes but adds a cynical edge sharpened on a prolific flow of speculative and macabre short stories. With an easy writing style Tony steers Horace through a series of missions where he’s not sure who is pulling his strings or who he can trust. A quick learner, Horace soon adds video recall, night vision, and signal emissions to his skill set but reading people proves a tougher task. This is a thriller, a science fiction adventure, but most of all a good old fashioned ripping yarn with a compulsive plot. Horace couldn’t be better equipped or less prepared for international intrigue but he clearly has an eye, or two, for danger.

LIVE ARICO P.A.W.S Biggest Message PRESS RELEASE In A Bottle

A denuncia brought last summer by two Live Arico ex-volunteers against three individuals, one a member of the Live Arico committee AND refuge volunteer, the second another committee member, and the third a refuge volunteer, for mistreatment of animals was last week closed by a Judge in the Granadilla court house. The Judges summary is on our Facebook page in Spanish, but contains the words.......”the images reported do not show with clarity any of the accused” and “the vets who assisted the refuge animals protested strongly that the accused did everything possible to care for the animals with the scarce resources and workers that they had, and this (lack of resources) was why the refuge eventually closed”

The images referred to were a collection of homemade videos showing the volunteers breaking up dog fights at the refuge in the summer of 2011. Still photographs were of dogs with various injuries and illnesses, mostly taken within the Hospivet surgery, but later used as ‘evidence’. Through all this, Live Arico, P.A.W.S., have carried on helping animals by financially supporting the dogs in Fasnia, and by giving assistance wherever possible to animal welfare associations and animals in need. Our remaining committee and volunteers have worked extremely hard with rehoming, keeping the shops busy, and making sure that all paperwork is in order. An educational campaign was commissioned by and written for the Ayuntamiento of San Miguel, and through the lu-

crative winter months we have made major inroads with our old debts with vets and feed suppliers. We always believed that they should not suffer for having provided vet care and food for the dogs when there was no money to pay for it. We can now truly move on from the past, but would have been unable to do so without the continued faith and support of the general public. Comments made to us at events like the Xmas bag packing at Iceland, and the recent dog show have given us strength and a renewed resolve to carry on. We have been working closely with other Associations and our long term plan is to bring about huge changes for the South, but that’s a long way off for now. We thank you for your unending faith and support.

The world’s largest message-in-a-bottle will be released into the ocean off the coast of Tenerife on March 13th. The Norwegian soft drink Solo is behind the project that also involves polar explorer Jarle Andhøy and the owner of Koeningsegg supercars. People worldwide can follow the remarkable journey as it happens on Facebook.

Inside the bottle is a case of Solo and a 12 square meter personal letter to the finder. Like all great expeditions, it has demanded months of hard work and preparation. “I just hope it’s not run over by a tanker on the first day”, says Jarle Andhøy, the godfa-

Sting in the tail end of storm

By Marc Craig

The recent tropical storm and the resulting high seas caused not a lot of damage but it has caused a potentially painful (and in extremely rare cases, lethal) problem on our beaches. Huge waves have washed thousands of Portuguese Man o War jellyfish onto the shore - as I witnessed myself, while walking my dog on Palm Mar beach this week.

Not a true jellyfish but a closely resembling siphonophore, they are actually a colonial organism made up of many individual organisms known as zooids. They have a very distinctive look: a Cornish pasty shaped, gas filled bladder forms the “body” it’s a lilac/purple colour with darker, purple streamer -like tentacles below, these can reach 50 metres long and are covered in venom stingers that they use to paralyse fish and other prey. Their tentacles are responsible for 10,000

stings a year in Australia and due to the fact that have no means of propulsion, they are often washed up in large numbers during bad storms and large waves, often resulting in the closure of beaches. Even once dead and dried out for days, these tentacles can still potentially sting, causing agonising red welts that last for

2-3 days and more seriously, in rare cases, trigger an allergic reaction that can disrupt heart and lung function. Although all of the ones I saw were quite small (10-15cm and smaller), it is certainly advisable to avoid them - and certainly don’t touch, or allow children or dogs to touch them.

ther of the expedition is well known for his controversial oceanic voyages on the sailboat Berserk. Joakim Sande, CEO of Solo, says: “We believe Solo is the best soda in the world, but unfortunately not enough people outside of Norway have had the chance to taste it yet. Deciding who should be the lucky ones to get a taste was too heart breaking, so we decided to leave it to the ocean currents, - The Canary Island is where Columbus set out to discover America in 1492 and where Norwegian icon Thor Heyerdahl spent his last years. It’s the perfect location for this ambitious project”, he explains. Bård Eker, the co-owner of companies Hydrolift, Koenigsegg and the Eker Design Group, has been in charge of creating the 2.5 tons and 26

feet long bottle. It has insurance and the required navigation lights for a drifting object in international waters, not to mention solar panels, satellite-connection and tracking technology. A 140-liter fresh water tank with remote controlled nozzles will clear the lenses of the custom made camera which will upload a picture every 8 hours. “It just might be the greatest bottle ever made...probably the most expensive one too”, says Eker. Track it on Facebook On Solo’s Facebook page, facebook.com/solo, people can track and guess exactly where the bottle will end up. Hopefully we will not end up breaking Captain Brown’s record for the oldest message in a bottle - it roamed the sea for 97 years and 309 days, laughs Sande.

UK And Spanish Authorities Join Forces Against Benefit Fraud

The British and Spanish authorities have joined forces in the fight to bring benefit fraudsters to justice through new information sharing arrangements.

The UK government is committed to clamp down on fraudsters who cheat the system to obtain taxpayers’ money that should be going to people needier than themselves. Sharing information, such as deaths of British nationals in Spain, helps the UK to ensure that the pensions and benefits of deceased expatriates are stopped as soon as possible, to avoid large overpayments to benefit recipients that then need to be paid back. The sharing of information also helps to identify fraudsters who deliberately fail to report the death of a family member to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) in order to continue fraudulently receiving the pension or benefit. One such case involved Michael Higgs and Nancy Rutter who together stole more than £39,000 from the public purse by continuing to draw the benefits of a deceased family member. Data matching between the UK and Spain revealed that Higgs’ father had died in Spain in 2005 yet the couple, who were living in Malaga, had failed to notify the DWP of the death. Thinking they would never be caught, they continued to fraudulently claim the father’s benefit. After being found guilty of fraud, and as well as having to pay back the money they had stolen, Higgs was given 18 months in prison and Rutter received two sentences of 30 months and 18 months to run concurrently. A criminal record can easily be avoided by keeping the DWP informed of any

change in personal circumstances, including the death of a family member who is in receipt of a pension or benefit. Failing to do so can lead to hefty overpayments that will have to be paid back, and even a prison sentence. For further details on how you can

report someone you suspect of committing benefit fraud, visit www.dwp. gov.uk/benefit-thieves-spain/ or call the DWP’s free and confidential benefit fraud hotline in Spain on 900 55 444 0. The UK and Spain are working together to tackle benefit fraudsters.

tooth, measuring 1.3 centimetres by two, and dating from 1.4 million years ago.

The 10-year-old child’s molar, presented at a news conference in Granada, and was found in the cave of Orce in the northern side of the province as long ago as 2002. A 10-year dating process in Paris and Barcelona laboratories culminated in an article on the tooth which, the archaeologist’s said, is due to appear shortly in the prestigious Journal of Human Evolution magazine. The tooth is now thought to date from an era between that of Homo Antecessor (1.2 million years ago) and Homo Georgicus (1.8 million years ago). But those thinking it could lend support to the claim by another archaeologist, the late José Gibert, that a bone he found in the same cave in 1982 belonged to another early human from 1.3 million years ago, the so-called “Orce Man”, may be mistaken. During a press conference last week, Orce Man was written off by one professor as being part of a female ruminant, a mammal digesting plant-based food. The comments provoked a strong reaction from José’s son, the geologist Luis Gibert, who insisted that Orce Man was exactly that: a man. Either way, should Orce Man have existed in human form, nobody has questioned that the milk tooth on show last week could have belonged to one of his ancestors.

Europe’s First Known Human Remain Found

The National Police have arrested thirty six people in an operation in which they broke up a criminal organization which exploited four hundred women in six massive brothels in various Andalusian provinces. By judicial order, fifty seven buildings, fifty six vehicles, a boat and other goods valued at fourteen million euros were immobilised. The annual earnings in each of the clubs, in Seville, Cádiz, Córdoba and Huelva, were around one point two million euros. The clubs each had cash dispensers available to allow clients fast access to money. There was tension at the court in Valencia, when the exdirector of Canal Nueve, and ex councilor for tourism and sports, Lola Johnson arrived to declare in the abuse case against the ex-secretary general of Radio television Valencia Vicente Sanz. He is accused of sexual abuse involving three workers. On her arrival, some thirty workers and ex-employees of the public TV station shouted greetings regarding corruption. Johnson sustained a nose injury in the melée, and needed medical attention.

In 1964, Spain gave Europe the very first desalination plant installed on the island of Lanzarote. Since then, the process has expanded throughout all of the Canary Islands and onto the Spanish mainland with one of the most recent installations destined for Torrevieja.

It has been over ten years since Zapatero’s government first welcomed the new Torrevieja plant as an alternative to the Ebro water transfer into Murcia and Alicante, and over two years since the structure was completed. But it now looks as though Torrevieja’s desalination plant will start supplying water for drinking and irrigation in just a few weeks’ time. With the works almost completed testing is about to begin, three years later than the original timeframe, which will see the network flow through the Mancomunidad de los Canales del Taibilla, which supplies 34 municipalities in the province. The award-winning 300m Euros ($438m) plant is Europe’s largest facility for converting seawater into fresh, and the second biggest in the world, but many experts have said that even when it

does begin to process seawater, the product may be some expensive that nobody will be prepared to buy it. Financed with Spanish taxpayers’ money and 55m Euros of European Union regional development funds, the Torrevieja plant has been challenged on both environmental and financial grounds as it fell victim to intense

political rivalry between the Spanish Socialist party, which at the time was in power, running the national government in Madrid, and the right wing Popular party, which controlled the Valencia Autonomous Region as well as Torrevieja’s Ayuntamiento. It was only when Rajoy became Prime Minister that many of the objections were over-

come. When it finally comes into operation the plant will have a production capacity of 240,000 m3/day and will provide 80 hm3 of water per annum. The new plant will guarantee the water supply to 400,000 people and to the irrigation of 8,000 hectares of agricultural land. To cater for future in-

crease in demand, the facility has been sized to achieve increased production of 50%, up to 360,000 m3/day. This makes it, not only the largest desalination plant in Spain and Europe, but also one of the largest in the world that is using reverse osmosis technology. Four years ago, the city of Barcelona suffered a drought

that forced it to import water from Tarragona and Marseilles in France. Today the city has a new desalination plant capable of producing a fifth of the area’s water supply. But with the high price of oil and abundant rain across much of Spain over the past two years, tit is bad news in the short term for high-cost desalination plants on the peninsula. A similar but smaller plant went into operation just down the coast in San Pedro del Pinatar in October 2006, the maintenance and conservation contract for which was recently been put out to tender at a value of 2 million Euros The San Pedro plant has a daily production capacity of 65,000 cubic metres of drinking water and can serve a population of over a million people. The facility supplies the product water to the New Canal in Cartagena, the main drinking water distribution artery in the Campo de Cartagena district, and to the distribution system that connects the Vega Baja del Segura (low plains of the River Segura) with Murcia. The government is now planning to build more desalination plants, adding to the more than 900 already in Spain - the largest number in any one country outside the Middle East.

“Spider Bite Nearly Killed Me”

Sue Isaac, 58, was bitten on the bottom by the spider while relaxing by the pool in southern Spain. That bite very nearly killed her.

At first she thought nothing of but she ended up in intensive care and surgeons operated to remove dead tissue from her leg after the wound became infected by a rare flesh-eating bug. She feared at one point they would have to amputate her leg. She required months of further treatment before she could return home to Braintree, Essex. Widowed mother of three, Mrs Isaac had been on a six week holiday to celebrate her retirement after selling her hairdressing business. She was bitten while at a friend’s villa at Albox, in Almeria province, on the second day of her trip last

July. ‘I got a sarong that I’d left out overnight on a sunbed and sat on it and thought, “Ooh that really hurt” and I realised I’d got bitten,’ she said. ‘It brought tears to my eyes, it was like a bee sting but it didn’t go away. I put insect repellent on it and didn’t think any more about it.’ But over the next week Mrs Isaac started to feel unwell and noticed that a small bruise had developed on the inside of her left thigh. ‘I felt poorly all the time,’ she said. ‘I had a fever, no energy. I felt giddy, I thought I was going to faint. But it was very hot so I put it down to that.’ Within days, the bruise had doubled in size and was surrounded by clusters of blisters. Mrs Isaac could not get out of bed. She was taken to hospital and admitted to intensive care; doctors told her an infection

Spain’s FAME School Opens

Sir Paul McCartney’s celebrated ‘Fame School’, has launched in Spain. The college, which is based along the lines of The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) has opened in Sitges, near Barcelona.

The Institute of the Arts Barcelona (IAB) will offer courses covering various performing arts disciplines at foundation, degree and post-graduate levels and the first set of students are due to enrol this September. The site includes a 200seat theatre, dance and acting studios, video production facilities, recording studios, learning resource facility and a café and social

area. The curriculum will include classes in acting, arts entrepreneurship, dance, film production, musical theatre, popular music and stage management. The Liverpool College cofounded by Sir Paul and Mr Featherstone-Witty and opened in 1995; is based in Sir Paul McCartney’s old school, the Liverpool Institute for Boys, Hope Street, which underwent a multimillion pound renovation to turn it into the stateof-the-art performing arts higher education institution. LIPA has been ranked in first place for its degree courses on several occasions and is regularly among the top 10 in rankings for specialist institutions.

had entered her body via the spider bite. She was given antibiotics intravenously but, after eight days in hospital, her left thigh had swollen to three times its normal size and the bruise had grown to 10in. Lab tests found 14 types of bacteria in the wound, including flesh-eating Streptococcus pyogenes. Doctors said that because the antibiotics were not working, the flesh had begun to die and had to be removed to stop the bacteria spreading to her vital organs: ‘I thought I was going to die, or, at best, I thought I was going to lose my leg,’ she said. ‘The doctor came on his rounds and said, “Right, we’ve got to cut it open”.’ When she asked about anaesthetic he told her she wouldn’t feel it because the tissue was ‘completely dead’. The operations saved Mrs Isaac’s life – but her ordeal was far from

over. After three weeks in hospital she was discharged and stayed at her friend’s villa but had to visit a local hospital every day to have the wound cleaned and dressed. Doctors removed more dead tissue every week for three months to stop the infection spreading and allow the healthy tissue to heal. It took a further two months for

her to be well enough to return home. She missed her goddaughter’s wedding, the 21st birthday of one of her daughters and the 30th birthday of another. But she says she is lucky to be alive. ‘At one point I asked to be left alone because I wanted to be by myself to die,’ she said. ‘I can’t believe I have got through this.’

Unemployment Figures Hit 5 Million

The number of people out of work in Spain has risen to over 5 million for the first time. The government in Madrid said there was no quick fix, with the economy expected to contract even further this year. Registered unemployment in Spain passed the five-million mark in February, the country’s Labour Ministry said.

It said unemployment now affected 5.04 million people, up some 59,000 from January. The ministry said many companies across the southern European nation continued to lay off staff because of unfavourable business prospects. The February figures marked Spain’s highest number of people out of work since the country became a democracy in 1975 after the death of General Francisco Franco. The conservative government of

King Juan Carlos Operation

All the King’s surgeons managed to put King Juan Carlos of Spain back together last Sunday, says the royal palace.

Mariano Rajoy had put in place painful spending cuts and tax rises aimed at saving 150 billion euros between 2012 and 2014. However, the cuts have not helped

kick-start the economy which Madrid expects to contract by 0.5% this year, to be followed by an expansion of 1.2% in 2014.

75-year-old Carlos, who has undergone four surgeries in the past year, was under the knife for three hours to treat herniated discs in his back; two spinal segments were fused together during the operation. Carlos has had 12 surgeries over the course of his life. Attending neurosurgeon Dr. Manuel de la Torre said the king would require between two and six months to fully recover. Medically, it has not been a good year for Carlos who had hip surgery last November and has suffered several other health issues in the past two years, including needing knee surgery and the removal of a benign lung tumour.

Last year, the King tripped and fell face first on to the floor during a visit to army headquarters in Madrid, injuring his nose.

Spanish Foreign nurse Shortages Service is Back

ThE Spanish government has decided to reform its foreign service, believing it has grown enormously without any guidelines, in order to maintain better coordination and coherence while projecting a better image of the country as well as its companies and products.

Deputy Premier Soraya Saenz de Santamaria and Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo announced at a Cabinet meeting that they had approved sending a draft bill to parliament outlining the reform. The purpose is to know “what interests us, why we should take action and how we should take action”, the deputy prime minister said. The idea of this law is “to put into practice a diplomacy of the 21st century, because what we have now is from the 20th century”, Garcia-Margallo said, refer-

ring to the proliferation of activities and establishments abroad by Spain’s various autonomous communities. The minister said that when the current Popular Party administration took power a little more than a year ago, there were 166 offices of autonomous communities outside the country. The proposed

law will seek to put order in this “chaotic situation” inherited from the Socialist government, he said. “We have to coordinate and save,” Garcia-Margallo said, inviting the autonomous communities to “work together” with the nation’s central administration in their representations abroad.

A ShORTAGE of nurses poses a serious risk to the health of patients in Malaga claims the union of nursing (Satse). The leading health union carried out a review of all the hospitals in Malaga which resulted in shocking statistics; in the Malaga province there are around 247 nurses for every 100,000 patients, half the number available in the rest of Spain. In Spain as a whole there

are 488 nurses to every 100,000 residents, still significantly fewer than the rest of the EU which has an average of 797 for every 100,000 in habitants. Satse claims there are currently more than 60 patients waiting for beds in the Malaga province and patients with tuberculosis, an extremely contagious disease, are being kept in the same wards as uninfected patients due to a shortage of beds and space. Hospital bosses have denied the claims but admit to a shortage of resources involving staff. An estimated extra

1,000 beds are needed in all the hospitals in Malaga to meet current demands. Satse are also concerned because an emergency operation on a cancer patient had to be postponed at the Nursing Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Malaga because there was no nursing staff to oversee the operation. They say the recent lack of recruitment drives to employ nurses has led to remaining staff members feeling ‘disabled and exhausted’. The union is now in talks with its members over taking possible strike action.

Locals Halt Custody Handover

Hundreds of residents in Alboraya, Valencia, took to the streets Sunday to prevent the Civil Guard from executing a court order to hand over a Spanish woman’s three children to their Mexican father. Residents gathered outside the home of Isabel Monros and her children, one age 13 and twins age 10, to prevent officers from getting to the children, setting off a six-hour standoff.

The Civil Guard officers finally left, without the children. The court ruling giving custody to father Joaquin Escolano “is a bad decision” and the judge should “listen to the children,” said

Morenos who brought the children to Spain in 2010. She then went into the street after Escolano and the officers had left to thank her neighbours, who applauded her. “This is not going to end here,” she said. Doctors’ reports show that “the children are strongly opposed to execution of this order” and their return to Mexico, Ignacio Amat, an attorney for Monros, said. The fight goes on to allow the children, who have dual Spanish-Mexican citizenship, to remain with their mother in Spain, Amat said. The long-running custody battle started in Mexico several years ago and has continued in Spain, where the father asked a court for custody so he could take the children back to his country.

Tenerife Weekly - 8th March - 14th March 2013 Hosting the Olympic Games boosted British business skills, youth sport and local communities, says London 2012 legacy ambassador Lord Coe.

The London 2012 Olympic Games provided a huge economic, sporting and social legacy for Great Britain, the Olympic legacy ambassador Lord Coe said during a visit to Madrid on Tuesday 5 Marh. Lord Coe addressed over 200 guests at a breakfast event organised by news agency Europa Press. “London 2012 was a once in a generation opportunity to showcase everything that makes Britain great in order to generate long-term economic benefits”, said Lord Coe. “The winning, planning, delivery and legacy of the Olympic and Paralympic Games called upon all the qualities that make the UK stand out in the global economy. Based on the expertise that they developed in London, British companies are now winning contracts to help other nations deliver their Olympic Games.” In Sochi, British firms have won contracts to provide project management of the Olympic Park, to design a flexible stadium for the

Thomas Cook Cuts 16% Of Workforce

Holiday firm Thomas Cook has announced it is to cut 2,500 UK jobs in order to “secure” its future. It plans to consult on proposals to close 195 of its 1,069 high street travel agencies. The job losses amount to 16% of its 15,500 workforce in the UK and Ireland.

In a statement, the company said: “As Thomas Cook UK & Ireland continues to

focus on the turnaround of the business it has today entered a 90 day consultation process with a number of its UK employees on the next phase of the three-year programme to transform its operations. The need to evolve the UK business has been a clearly stated goal, accelerated by the appointment of Peter Fankhauser, an experienced Thomas Cook leader as UK CEO. The UK business

needs to reduce cost to ensure back-office costs are not passed on to customers and that the necessary operational changes are made to reflect evolving customer needs, and purchasing requirements.” It continued: “The Company has 1,069 stores in the UK, making it the largest high street travel retailer. opening and closing ceremonies, and to provide roofs for the bobsleigh and ice hockey venues. In addition, UK companies are supplying construction equipment and consultancy, auditing and legal services. For the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, British companies have won contracts to consult on sports pitches, urban and transport planning, sustainability and security. They are also supplying communications equipment and stadium seats. London 2012 has also created a sporting legacy including the upgrading of hundreds of local sports clubs,

the recruitment of new sports coaches and leaders, and a boost for Britain as an international sporting host - the country will host some 70 world class sporting events over the next four years. All eight of the Olympic Park venues are being converted to permanent sporting and community facilities. Lord Coe added “I am delighted that we also held the most accessible and inclusive Games ever, with disability access incorporated into the design and structure of buildings, open spaces and public transport. The London Paralympic Games changed

attitudes to disabled people.” Lord Coe told guests of his relationship with Spain “Where I have many friends. In fact, the first I time took part in an international championship was in San Sebastian and my last competition in Europe was in Barcelona.” After the Europa Press event, Lord Coe joined a round table with Spanish business leaders at the British Embassy organised by UK Trade & Investment. Lord Coe also remains chairman of the London organising committee for the Olympic Games until the organisation is wound up this summer.

targets of the business and are in communities where Thomas Cook has more than one retail outlet. This consultation aims to address excess capacity, without compromising the ‘omni-channel’ customer experience.” Mr Fankhauser added: “Thomas Cook is a much loved brand that needs to make the proposed changes to secure our future and provide continued employment for many thousands across the UK and better meet the needs of our customers going forward. It is essential that we operate with the right number of people as we move forward into the next era for our company.

“It is never easy to make decisions that impact directly on our people, but we also owe it to our customers to operate efficiently and ensure that when they book their holiday with us our administrative costs are as low as possible. We firmly believe these proposals will mean a better – more profitable – Thomas Cook that continues to be a major employer in the UK and offer the widest range of holidays for travellers and voyagers in the future. We are already consulting with our Unions and employee representative bodies to minimise the impact of these changes and I am speaking personally to

all employees today to provide information and support through this period of consultation.” Thomas Cook’s transformation plan was blamed for deeper losses in its last financial year. The 171-year-old company reported a statutory loss of £590m for the 12 months to the end of September, even worse than the £518m loss recorded the previous year. Thomas Cook was under pressure to tighten its purse strings at a time of a slowdown in consumer spending and had already made huge cuts including planes, stores and other costs ahead of today’s announcement.

Bonnie Tyler – New Hope For Eurovision

H

usky voiced Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler has been picked to represent the UK in this year’s Eurovision competition. The 61-year-old star, who found fame nationally with Lost In France in 1976, is hoping to totally eclipse her rivals at the event in Malmo, Sweden, with a song called Believe In Me. She said: “I am truly honoured and delighted to be able to represent my country at Eurovision and especially with such a fabulous song. I promise to give this everything that I’ve got for the UK.” The competition will be broadcast live by the BBC on Saturday, May 18.

Tyler’s career was almost over before it started after she had surgery to remove nodules from her throat. But she credits the operation with helping develop her trademark husky vocals.. South Wales born Tyler, is still a chart success in Continental Europe, is hoping she can improve the UK’s rating on last year’s performance by Engelbert Humperdinck, who scraped into last-butone place in the contest. He opened the show in Baku,

Azerbaijan, with the ballad Love Will Set You Free, which seemed to be all but forgotten by the time voting started, 25 songs later. The singer, nicknamed The Hump, scored a total of 12 ending up just one position above Norway. Critics of the contest say it is no longer a good-hearted singing competition between European nations, but a chance for neighbouring countries to engage in political and strategic voting.

Tenerife Weekly - 8th March - 14th March 2013 A military parade was held to carry the remains of President Hugo Chavez through the streets of the Venezuelan capital Caracas. The country’s foreign minister, Elias Jose Jaua Milano, announced seven days of mourning for the socialist leader, who died at the age of 58 after losing his battle with cancer.

His coffin left Caracas’ military hospital earlier for his body to be escorted through the city. It now lies in state at a military academy until a public funeral today (Friday). Tens of thousands of Venezuelans filled the streets with many crying, hugging each other, and shouting slogans of support. A sea of red, yellow and blue - the colours of the national flag - surrounded Mr Chavez’s coffin as supporters joined the procession to celebrate and pay their respects to the leader they loved. Women with tears streaming down their faces wept outside Miraflores presidential palace. Some wore T-shirts with slogans that read: “Go forward commander!” Nearby, men pumped their arms in the air while shouting: “Long live Chavez! Long live Chavismo!” Minutes before his final journey, vice president Nicolas Maduro said Mr Chavez’s “spirit roams freely, filled with light protecting our people. Our people are in the streets expressing their solidarity, their feelings.” He fought back tears as he announced the death on Tuesday night in a national television broadcast. He said Mr Chavez, who had been in power for 14 years, died at 4.25pm local time “after battling a tough illness for nearly

two years”. Amid fears of unrest, Mr Maduro also said the army and police had been deployed “to accompany and protect our people and guarantee the peace”. Mr Jaua Milano said Mr Maduro would take over the presidency until fresh elections can take place in around 30 days. Ideological allies across Latin America lined up to salute former paratrooper Mr Chavez, a standard bearer of the region’s “anti-imperialist” left. Cuba declared three days of national mourning; the government said Mr Chavez had “stood by Fidel Castro like a true son”. Bolivia’s socialist President Evo Morales said he was “crushed”, while Argentinian Vice President Amado Bou-

dou said “all of Latin America” was in mourning. President Barack Obama expressed hopes for improved relations with the oilrich state, voicing American “support for the Venezuelan people and its interest in developing a constructive relationship with the Venezuelan government”. He added: “As Venezuela begins a new chapter in its history, the United States remains committed to policies that promote democratic principles, the rule of law, and respect for human rights.” British Foreign Secretary William Hague said he was “saddened” by the death of a leader who had left a “lasting impression on the country and more widely”. Mr Chavez had been receiving cancer treatment in Cuba regularly since June 2011 when he was first diagnosed with the illness. He had not been seen in public or heard since undergoing a fourth session of surgery in Cuba in December. The government said he returned home on February 18, and had been confined to Caracas’ military hospital ever since. During his time in power, Mr Chavez routinely chal-

lenged the status quo at home and internationally. The fiery populist leader declared a socialist revolution in Venezuela, crusaded against US influence, championed a leftist revival across Latin America, and over time, gradually placed all state institutions under his personal control. His death sets up a snap presidential election after his illness prevented him from taking the oath of office when he was re-elected last year. Under the constitution, the head of Congress, Diosdado Cabello, would assume the interim presidency. However, Mr Maduro is Mr Chavez’s self-anointed successor and has been holding the reins since the president’s health worsened. The man Mr Chavez defeated in October’s presidential elections, Miranda state Governor Henrique Capriles, is expected to represent the opposition in any new national polls. He called for unity and offered his condolences to Mr Chavez’s family and supporters. Venezuela’s defence minister pledged the military would remain loyal to the constitution in the wake of Mr Chavez’s death.

ThE tallest policeman in Britain was one of the officers standing guard outside the Queen’s hospital. PC Anthony Wallyn, who is 7ft 2in (2.18 metres) tall, was stationed alongside the smallest officer in the Met’s Westminster Borough Support unit, PC Tony Thich, who is 5ft 6in (1.67 metres).

ThE Queen left King Edward VII’s hospital in central London hospital on Monday after being struck down gastroenteritis on Friday and spent just 24 hours being treated for symptoms. She appeared looking relaxed and smiling, on the steps and walked to her waiting limousine.

She was, however, forced her to cancel a trip to Rome to meet the country’s Presi-

dent Giorgio Napolitano for a private lunch on Thursday, as well as other planned engagements. She last had to cancel an event, an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle due to chronic back pain in October 2012. She also missed a church service at Sandringham two days before Christmas last year because she was “getting over the tail end of a cold”. Being admitted raised concerns about the Queen’s health generally as this was the first time the 86-year-old has been treated overnight at hospital in 10 years. But

she looked well and cheerful, wearing a scarlet coat, as she said goodbye to a uniformed member of staff who curtseyed to her. The Queen was driven away by a chauffeur and is likely to spend time convalescing at her favourite home Windsor Castle. A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman declined to discuss in detail her condition and just said that she remained in “good spirits”. The Duchess of Cambridge was treated at the same hospital last December for acute morning sickness.

The pair, known by their colleagues as Big Tone and Little Tone, stood at the entrance of King Edward VII’s Hospital in London on Sunday while the Queen received treatment for a stomach bug. PC Wallyn, whose nick-

names include Big Tower, has had a custom-made uniform since he joined the force four years ago. The fatherof-one, who wears size 17 shoes, said: “I get 100-500 requests for a photo each day. It’s like being famous but without the money. It’s hap-

pened every day of my life. If it didn’t happen I would be worried.” He added it would make for an unusual image if the Queen, who is just 5ft 4in (1.62 metres) tall, walked past him when she leaves hospital. “It would be a nice photo,” he quipped.

“Fast eddie” Finally Jailed

A British thief nicknamed Fast Eddie, who evaded justice for almost 20 years living as a fugitive in the uS after stealing a security van containing £1.2m, has finally been jailed for five years. Eddie Maher was wanted by Suffolk Police after the Securicor van he was driving disappeared from Lloyds Bank in Felixstowe, Suffolk, on January 22, 1993.

The 57-year-old, originally from South Woodham Ferrers, Essex, was arrested by US authorities in February last year, he was held in custody awaiting trial after de-

nying the theft following his deportation. But he entered a last-minute guilty plea at Southwark Crown Court in London as he was due to stand trial. He was later jailed by a judge. Maher, who used the false identities of Stephen King and his brother Michael Maher while on the run, originally intended to fight the allegation on the grounds that he had been forced to commit the crime after racking up “significant debts”. But Suffolk Police and the Crown Prosecution Service built up evidence proving that he had profited by hundreds of thousands of pounds. After his conviction, detectives revealed details of a series of property investments they say he funded

from the proceeds of the crime in Suffolk. This included a house in Colorado bought with $120,000 (£79,300) in cash just six months after the theft. Later Maher built a ranch on 80 acres in Colorado before moving around various US states. During his time on the run, Maher made a new life for himself with partner, Deborah Brett, and their son Lee, who was three-years-old at the time of the robbery. When he was arrested on February 9 last year, he was working as a cable engineer in Missouri. But his attempts to escape justice fell apart when he was arrested for illegally possessing firearms. When US authorities contacted their UK counterparts about immigration issues, it became

clear he was a wanted man. Speaking outside court, Detective Inspector David Giles, from Suffolk Police, said: “Maher said he was forced to carry out this crime and that he only got a small amount of money from it. He never named the people who he claimed forced him into it and never put forward a credible

story. We have succeeded in proving that he profited substantially from the theft and was a key player in the planning and execution of it. Since his arrest, he has displayed no remorse for what he did - but I get the impression he has spent 20 years looking over his shoulder and hoping the law would not catch up with

19

him.” None of the £1.2m stolen from the van, which filled 30 sacks, has ever been traced. Ms Brett, 47, Maher’s sister Margaret Francis, 64, and a 54-year-old man, from Woodford Green, east London, are all on bail after being arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit theft.

last Moments Of Concordia Revealed DETAILS of the final moments of the 32 people who died in the Costa Concordia cruise ship tragedy have emerged in a 60-page prosecution report. The document makes up the official request to have Captain Francesco Schettino, who was in charge at the time, sent for trial.

He is accused of multiple manslaughter, causing a disaster, failing to inform authorities of what had happened and abandoning ship while dozens of his passengers were still on-board. More than 4,000 passengers and crew were on-board the doomed cruise ship when it struck rocks after Schettino allegedly changed course in order to carry out a sail-by salute to a Mediterranean island to impress holidaymakers. The 70-metre gash allowed water to pour in and the ship eventually capsized and came to rest on its side at a location known as Seagull Point, just outside the harbour on the island of Giglio in January last year, just hours into a seven-day cruise. The chaotic scenes of panic and disorganisation on the ship as it started to sink are evident throughout the report. In one part, Francesco Verusio relives the moment when the youngest victim of the disaster, five-year-old Dayana Arlotti, and her father, William, drowned. Mr Verusio wrote that they died ‘’because they were unable to find any space in a lifeboat on deck four, on the left-hand side, and they were then directed to the right-hand side by crew members on the same deck but as they were crossing the inside corridor ... they fell into a hole that had been created when the ship rolled onto its right side. They

dropped into an area that was already flooded and they died from drowning,” he added. Another victim, bartender Erika Fani Soria Molinala, fell from a lifeboat as it pulled away from the Concordia, she was not wearing a lifejacket and was dragged underwater by the current created as the Concordia tilted on its side. It also emerged that holidaymaker Maria D’Introno , whose body was never recovered, was told to get out of a lifeboat because it was too full and the tilt of the ship made it impossible to launch safely. She was later seen terrified by the edge of the ship, jumping into the water without a lifejacket; she could not swim. Musician Giuseppe Girolamo’s last moments are described in another section of the report. He had been directed to the right-hand side of the boat to get into a lifeboat and had actually got into one when he decided to give up his place. He later drowned. The prosecution report also highlights how Schettino was distracted by the ‘’inopportune presence of unauthorised persons’’ on the bridge of the Concordia, including several crew members and passenger hostess Domnica Cemortan, who had been seen enjoying dinner with the captain minutes before the ship struck the rocks. It details how Schettino was distracted as he was speaking on the telephone while he was ‘’in close proximity to the coast in a dangerous situation and with the helm under manual control”. The document lists 157 passengers who are suffering from posttraumatic stress following the disaster. Schettino, 52, has always insisted

he is innocent of all charges and that the rocks were not marked on his charts. He says he should be thanked as his actions in steering the ship back towards the port at Giglio saved hundreds of lives. However, he was ridiculed by the world’s media after it was reported that he had told coastguards he “tripped and fell” into a lifeboat as the Concordia began to list to one side, while recordings later emerged of him refusing orders to get back on-board

and co-ordinate the rescue efforts. Other crew members also face charges, prosecutors have requested the indictment of five other crew members; officers Ciro Ambrosio and Silvio Coronica and the Concordia’s helmsman Jacob Rusli, as do management figures from the company Costa Cruises which owns the ship that is still lying on its side and not expected to be removed until September. It has emerged that Costa Cruises asked for a plea-

bargaining agreement, which would see them pay a fine of one million euros. They insist Schettino is solely to blame. The initial part of the trial is expected to last a week and once again will take place in a theatre in the town of Grosseto. In an unusual move, Mr Verusio has posted details of the case on a Facebook site in various languages and invited those who may have a claim to contact him.

Picture yourself getting out of the bath or shower and wrapping yourself in pure heaven, in possibly the softest bath towel ever. Pure cotton can often feel a bit rough to the touch; not only will you find that the towels are exceptionally soft and absorbent, but you will also find that they are durable for everyday use. Even better news is that bamboo fabric require less frequent washing, it needs no more than a 30˚C wash

and dries in half the time of cotton. Tumble dry low and remove from dryer as soon as it stops to avoid unnecessary creasing. The only place that actually stocks these delicious items is Antiquities Tenerife in Las Chafiras. The have stock in three different colours, soft brown, grey and aubergine and at the moment they have an offer for one bath towel and a hand towel for just 15,00 Euros. p.M’s Wife Turns Red

RED would usually be avoided for any Tory but Samantha Cameron, 41, has a good reason for wearing the Opposition’s colours. David Cameron’s wife wore a bright red wig, cut into a bob, as she worked in the kitchen of number 10 baking treats for Comic Relief.

The kitchen, which the couple spent thousands renovating after they moved into Downing Street, was also decorated with red bunting and balloons. The couple’s children, Nancy and her brother Elwen were also hard at work with their mother as she presented a tray of cookies, chocolate cakes and flapjacks which will be sold to Downing Street staff to raise money for this year’s Red Nose Day.

Mrs Cameron said: “Baking is such a brilliant and easy way to raise money for Red Nose Day. I know the children are really looking forward to selling our cakes around the offices in Downing Street. I hope lots of people all over the country are also baking, or finding other fun ways to support Comic Relief.” The money raised by Red Nose Day, which falls on March 15, will be spent on projects in the UK and Africa.

Baby Cured Of HIV

A baby girl from Mississippi in the US, born with HIV, is now two-and-a-half years old and it appears she has been cured as she has now been off HIV drugs for about a year with no signs of infection, after receiving standard drug therapy just hours after her birth.

Researchers are calling for more testing to be done to see if the treatment would have the same effect on other children. The case could change the way high-risk babies are treated and possibly lead to a cure for children with HIV, which causes Aids. “This is a proof of concept that HIV can be potentially curable in infants,” said Dr Deborah Persaud, a virologist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She presented the findings at a conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Atlanta. If the baby stays healthy, it would be only the second reported case of a person who has recovered

from HIV, the first being Timothy Ray Brown, known as “Berlin patient”, in 2007. His HIV infection was completely eradicated through an elaborate treatment for leukaemia that involved the destruction of his immune system and a stem cell transplant from a donor with a rare genetic mutation that resists HIV infection. The treatment used for the baby girl involved the use of a cocktail of widely available drugs already used to treat HIV infection in infants. She was born in a rural hospital to a woman who had just tested positive for HIV infection. Because her mother had not received any prenatal HIV treatment, doctors knew the child was born at high risk of being infected. They transferred the baby to the University of Mississippi Medical Centre in Jackson, where she was put on a cocktail of three standard HIV-fighting drugs when she was just 30 hours old - even before lab tests came back confirming her infection. After starting on treatment under the care of Dr Hannah Gay, a

paediatric HIV specialist, the baby’s immune system responded and tests showed levels of the virus were diminishing until it was undetectable 29 days after birth. The baby received regular treatment for 18 months, but then stopped coming to appointments for a period of about 10 months, when her mother said she was not given any treatment. When the child came back under the care of Dr Gay, she ordered

standard blood tests to see how the child was faring before resuming antiviral therapy. The first blood test did not turn up any detectable levels of HIV. Neither did the second. And tests for HIV-specific antibodies the standard clinical indicator of HIV infection - also remained negative. “At that point, I knew I was dealing with a very unusual case,” Dr Gay said. More sophisticated blood tests followed, and there was no detect-

Internet Shopping On The Increase

The number of people in Britain who use the internet every day has more than doubled over the past six years to 33 million, according to the Office for National Statistics. The figure represents 68% of those over 16. In 2006, only 16 million adults said they went online every day.

The rise in popularity of Facebook and Twitter has changed the way people use the internet. Social networking is now the most popular activity among 16 to 24-year-olds, with 87% logging on daily. Almost half of all adults were on social networks in 2012, and 40% of 45 to 54-year-olds also used them to communicate. However, email still remains the most popular online past-time. Using mobiles to access the internet is also on the rise, boosted by lower prices for the technology and the popularity of devices like the Galaxy and iPhone. Just over 50% of adults used a phone to access the net in 2012, more than double the 2010 figure, with 32% going online on their handset every day. The mobile internet now appears to be a regular feature of life for many people, with the ONS saying 60% of adults went online in 2012 via wi-fi hotspots or mobile networks. But despite the growing popularity of

tablet devices, laptop computers are still the most popular option for browsing. In 2012, 21% of people used a tablet to access the internet outside their home or office, while 34% used a laptop. The spread of internet shopping is also reflected in the survey. With reduced overheads and bulk buying power, retailers like Amazon have been blamed for recent high street closures. And more people are being attracted to the web in their search for a bargain. Twothirds shopped online in 2012, up from

just over half in 2008, with clothes and sports goods the most popular purchase. 87% of 25 to 34 year-olds shopped online.. The ONS explained: “There are distinct differences in how individuals make use of the internet when analysed by age. As ‘early-adopters’, it is of little surprise that those adults aged 16 to 24 are proportionately the largest users of many of the available internet activities.” The ONS findings are based on a random sample of about 1,800 adults.

able virus in the child’s blood. The doctors advised that she not be given antiretroviral therapy. Instead, she will be monitored. Dr Rowena Johnston, vice president and director of research for the Foundation for Aids Research, which helped fund the study, said it is “imperative that we learn more about a new born’s immune system, how it differs from an adult’s and what factors made it possible for the child to be cured”.

“I Can Feel It Kicking”

The Duchess of Cambridge can feel her unborn baby kicking but has refused to discuss whether the potential heir to the throne is a boy or a girl. Kate, whose baby is due in July, made the revelation to a member of the public she met on a royal visit to Grimsby.

She was asked by a woman: “Can you feel the baby kicking?” the Duchess replied: “Yes. I can feel it kicking.” The Duchess met dozens of well-wishers while on a visit to Grimsby’s National Fishing Heritage Centre, her first of three official engagements. It is not known

if she and William know the sex of her unborn baby, but when asked, she avoided giving any clues. The Government has proposed changing the law of succession to allow a firstborn female to become queen in the event that Prince William’s wife gives birth to a girl.

anastacia in 2 polar Bear Cub To Cancer Battle help Fundraise

POP star Anastacia has revealed she has been diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time. The I’m Outta Love singer said she was “fighting” the disease but admitted that this time “the battle is intense”. In a tweet she said of the cancer: “yes it has come back, yes i’m fighting it, but ths (sic) time the battle is a pretty intense. Thank u 4 yr luv&prayers.”

Thousands of people have been leaving messages on her Facebook page, expressing their shock and wishing her well. One fan wrote: “So sad to hear this news. I can count the number of Female Vocalists I like on one hand but you have always been my number one. You are classy, beautiful and have the most amazing voice with such power. That Power comes from within and you can fight this again. We are all with you.”

nd

A PLAyFuL, three-month-old cub was introduced to the public at Buffalo Zoo in new york State, as the zoo announced the next phase of fundraising for an $18m (£12m) exhibit. It is hope that Luna will help raise $4m (£2.65m) for a new polar bear exhibit.

Another posted: “You are a strong girl, you beat it once and you will beat it again. See you on the stage soon. XXX.” A further post read: “Anastacia dear, you’re a wonderful person and an artist great, I know for sure how to touch the strings of my soul. In this battle against cancer, you will emerge winner, including having to fight, because you positive energy to spare, and I in my small way, I will pray for you. I love you beautiful soul.” The singer, who was first diagnosed with the disease in 2003, was due to start the tour with a performance in London on April 6. She said:

“I feel so awful to be letting down all my amazing fans who were looking forward to It’s A Man’s World Tour. It just breaks my heart to disappoint them.” A spokesman for the star said she would continue writing and recording her new album and hoped to schedule a new tour as soon as possible. He added that she aimed “to make a full recovery with the support of her family, friends and everyone around her” and asked for her privacy to be respected “during such a trying time”. Refunds for tickets for the tour can be collected from the point of purchase.

Over the past two years, the zoo has raised $14m, and now staff are hoping the new arrival will help raise the remaining amount. Luna was born on November 27 and has been hand raised by the zoo’s vets and keepers. Buffalo Zoo keeper, Alice Rohauer, who served as a surrogate mother for the little bear, said Luna was “a handful”, but “fun to take care of”. Luna’s parents, Anana and Nanuq, had to be relocated as the zoo’s century-old polar bear enclosure no longer met current national standards. The Buffalo Zoo said it is one of

only two zoos in North America to have polar bear births in 2012. While she is still too small to exhibit, Luna’s antics are visible via closed-circuit television at the zoo on weekday afternoons. Her mother Anana, did not display maternal instincts, and now lives at the Brookfield Zoo outside Chicago. Luna’s father, Nanuq, is at Columbus Zoo, in Ohio. Updates about the baby polar bear can be found on its http://buffalozoo.org, or on the Zoo’s Facebook page: BuffaloZoo.

Fake Bishop Fools Vatican

A

false bishop hoodwinked senior cardinals at the Vatican for discussions about arrangements for the election of the next Pope. German-born Ralph Napierski was pictured with senior clerics as they arrived for the start of the College of Cardinals meeting. Mr Napierski was seen shaking hands with unsuspecting Cardinal Sergio Sebiastiana outside the Vatican’s Pope Paul VI hall, with several other priests in his entourage who were also thought to be bogus.

Ever vigilant Swiss Guards caught him out as his vestments were wrong and they noticed his purple sash was actually a scarf; he was also wearing an odd-looking fedora hat. Other giveaways were the shortness of his black cassock and the crucifix around his neck on a short chain. Before being spotted Mr Napierski had told reporters his name was Basilius, a member of the non-existent Italian Orthodox Church. He had said the Catholic Church had made “serious mistakes” by allowing priests accused of sex crimes to move to different parishes and cover up scandals rather than dealing with them. The imposter has a website in which he claims to be a bishop with a Catholic organisation called Corpus Dei.

It shows him dressed in robes and he describes himself as a “slave and apostle like St Paul”, although it is littered with spelling mistakes. Mr Napierski has also uploaded several videos on YouTube, in which he describes the benefits of the “ancient hidden spiritual practice of Jesus Yoga” and his website goes on to add that he is “fighting the heresy and false movements inside the Roman Catholic Church”. Vatican officials tried to play down the incident with spokesman Father Federico Lombardi saying: “I’m not aware of this at all - I was inside the hall and all those inside were real cardinals.” Initially there were reports in the Italian media that he was part of a stunt by Australian TV but this later proved to be false.

Man Dies As Batman Returns Sinkhole Opens In - To Bradford His Bedroom T Jeff Bush is missing, presumed dead after he was swallowed up by a sinkhole measuring 30 metres (100 feet) across which opened up under his bedroom. The 36-year-old was trapped under rubble after the home in Brandon, east of Tampa Bay, began to collapse into the 15m deep hole on last Thursday night. “It’s not confirmed, but I think it’s safe to presume,” spokeswoman for Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, Jessica Damico told reporters. There were five adults and one child inside the house at the time. The victim’s brother, Jeremy Bush, tried unsuccessfully to pull him from the sinkhole after hearing a loud crash at around 11pm and screams for help. “When he got there, there was no bedroom left,” Ms Damico said. “There was no furniture. All he saw was a piece of the mattress sticking up.” The brother then had to be rescued by a sheriff’s deputy who arrived at the scene. “The floor was still giving in and the dirt was still going down, but I didn’t care. I wanted to save my brother,” Jeremy said. “But I just couldn’t do

he identity of Bradford’s very own Batman has been revealed. The mystery was sparked when an anonymous man dressed in full Batman costume handed in a suspected burglar to officers at Trafalgar House police station in Bradford.

nothing. I could swear I heard him hollering my name to help him. All I could see was the cable wire running from the TV going down into the hole. I saw a corner of the bed and a corner of the box spring and the frame of the bed.” Engineers determined the sinkhole extends for 15 metres in both directions from the central point in the bedroom. But it is not visible above ground except from inside the house. Overnight the home became too unstable to continue rescue efforts. People living in neighbouring homes were also evacuated as the sinkhole “seriously unstable” and likely to grow, according to officials. The house was later demolished to enable authorities to ascertain the level of damage.

Hillsborough County administrator Mike Merrill announced that engineers said the soil around the house was very soft and could suffer another collapse: “This is no ordinary sinkhole. This is a chasm.” Florida is highly prone to sinkholes because of underground limestone, a porous rock that easily erodes in water - leading to collapse. State law requires home insurers provide coverage against the danger. Mr Bush said someone visited the home a couple of months ago to check for sinkholes and other things, apparently for insurance purposes. “He said there was nothing wrong with the house. Nothing. And a couple of months later, my brother dies. In a sinkhole,” he said.

CCTV images were released by the police in the hope of tracking down the undercover superhero. The pictures showed a caped crusader, fully dressed as in the comic hero’s trademark boots, gloves and logo across his chest, standing next to a man wearing a red hooded sweatshirt. Stan Warby, 39, had been at a football match dressed as the superhero when friend Danny Frayne called him asking for help in handing himself in to officers. The Chinese takeaway driver took Frayne, 27, to Trafalgar House police station as a favour, after returning from Bradford City’s cup final match against Swansea at Wembley Stadium. Mr Warby said: “It was a joke at the end of the day, and Danny wanted to go to the police station. I had spoken to Danny during the week and tried to knock some sense into him. It was getting on my nerves having police round all

the time asking for him or his whereabouts. Danny’s a good friend of mine and I’ve known him for 15 years or so. Who knows if I’ll be doing some more crime-fighting in the future?” He added that he had attracted some “strange looks”. Frayne is due to appear in court charged with handling

stolen goods and fraud-related offences. Batman is a famous fictional crime fighter, from Gotham City, who has been around since 1939. In the original story his alter-ego was a billionaire philanthropist who devoted his life to fighting crime after his parents were both murdered.

www.tenerife-weekly.com Status Quo, one of Britain’s most successful rock groups is back on tour this week - but for the first time in three decades it really will be a return to the Status Quo. Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt will be joined by the other two original members for a series of reunion concerts.

Drummer John Coghlan left in 1981 and bass player Alan Lancaster four years later, sparking a bitter court battle over the Status Quo name. Rossi and Parfitt recruited replacements and have been touring ever since. But they’ve finally patched up their differences with their former band mates, nearly 50 years after they first began playing together. They have been rehearsing at a studio in Shepperton, trying to recreate the sound of their criticallyacclaimed live album from 1977. Parfitt said: “I think the really positive thing is that if we hadn’t split up we couldn’t have got back together again. It’s very nice to see everybody again, to get to know everybody again, because there’s a lot of water gone under the bridge. In places it’s really fantastic to play together again. In places. We’ve got a lot of work to do yet, but it feels very nostalgic. I’ll tell you after the first night. It’s going to be good. Or not. One of the two.” Francis Rossi says it hasn’t been easy: “It’s a different ball game than when those guys were here. The industry is different, our whole touring thing is more efficient. It’s just completely different. Amplification is different. In-ear monitors they’re

trying to get used to. A lot of stuff they’re trying to get used to that we just take for granted and there may be a bit of friction there because we’re expecting it to be as it normally is.” But Coghlan and Lancaster are

glad to be back after their break. “It’s great playing with them again in all seriousness.” said Lancaster, who’s now 64. “Fantastic. I’m enjoying it, anyway.” And Coghlan admitted it has been hard work. “It is, yeah. Being an old man like, 66, but

it’s a groove and I’m enjoying it. It’s fun.” Coghlan had already left the band when Status Quo played to their biggest-ever global TV audience, opening the Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium in 1985. He ad-

mits he watched the performance with some sadness. “We’d fallen out by that time. I’d like to have done it. I was in the Isle of Man at the time with my feet up, and I thought ‘Oh, well, I could have been there’ but never mind. Move on.” Despite having more chart singles than any other British band, they only plan to play a couple of hits during this tour, concentrating on heavier album tracks favoured by diehard fans. Lancaster said: “It’s the thing that struck me, what band who’ve had so many hits goes on stage and plays no hit records? We’re hardly playing any of our singles whatsoever.” After the tour is complete, Lancaster and Coghlan will go back into to retirement, while Rossi and Parfitt will carry on working with the other Quo members they’ve recruited in recent years. Not content with rocking into their mid-60s, this summer they are launching a film career. They’ are set to star alongside Hollywood comedy actor Jon Lovitz in an action film shot in Fiji called Bula Quo!. Rossi says it has its roots in a guest appearance he and Parfitt had in the Rovers Return. “When we were doing Coronation Street, the guy who was brought in to teach him and I to fight on screen said I’d like to make a movie, and seven years later it came about. A most enjoyable experience. I’m not saying we’re actors, but we enjoyed doing it immensely.” Quo fans have christened the original line up the Frantic Four. Their nine-date reunion tour began on Wednesday, March 6, in Manchester, and finishes at Wembley Arena on March 17.

Rhino Poaching South African On The Increase Police Arrested

Officials have announced that poachers in north-east India have killed 13 endangered one-horned rhinos over the past two months. The latest death toll has added to concerns about a recent rise in killings.

The attacks have taken place around the Kaziranga National Park in Assam state, home to more than twothirds of the world’s onehorned rhinos where heavilyarmed poachers shoot dead the giant herbivores. Last week several forest rangers deployed to protect the species took part in a gun battle that lasted for more than seven hours but failed to stop the killing of another animal. “The poachers killed the rhino and took away its horn. In just two months they have killed 13 rhinos,” Kaziranga park warden NK Vasu revealed. Wildlife experts say the price of a single rhino horn

rivals gold and its value attracts international organised crime groups. China is the main market where it is used for medicine and jewellery while in Vietnam many believe that rhino horn can cure cancer and has aphrodisiac qualities. “We cannot simply sit tight and watch the rhinos being slaughtered almost every other day,” said Apurba Das, a wildlife conservationist in Assam. At least 21 rhinos were killed last year. A 2012 census in the park put the number of the rhinos at 2,290 one-horned rhinoceros population of 3,300

around the world. The species reached near extinction in the early 1990s and is currently listed as “vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Authorities said they have intensified security patrols and are planning to seek help from locals residing who live on the edge of the national park to improve surveillance. “It will be just a matter of time before the rhino population in Kaziranga is wiped out by organised poacher gangs with the Government failing to check incidents of poaching,” said Ramen Deka, a politician from Assam.

Eight South African police officers have been charged with murder after a video showed a man being handcuffed to a moving van. South Africa’s police watchdog earlier arrested the men over the death of a Mozambican taxi driver, Mido Macia, who died in custody after being dragged by the police vehicle. He was later found dead in a police cell with serious head and internal injuries.

Witnesses said Mr Macia, 27, drew the attention of police when he parked in a way that blocked traffic, and then got into a row with officers. “We are going to film this,” several onlookers shouted in Zulu as the police subdued Mr Macia. One bystander can be heard shouting: “What has this guy done?” Police in Pretoria held a

press conference to calm a nation outraged by the footage showing Mido Macia being dragged through the streets. National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Riah Phiyega, said the eight officers had been suspended and disarmed. They have since been charged with murder. The station commander in Daveytown, a township east of Johannesburg, has also been removed from his post, she said. “Any one death is one

too many,” Ms Phiyega said. “We believe in the principle of police being policed.” The Daily Sun, a South African newspaper, posted footage of the dragging incident, which occurred last Tuesday. It was filmed by several people on mobile phones. President Jacob Zuma condemned the killing of Mr Macia. Some commentators drew comparisons with the 1977 death of anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko, who also suffered head injuries in police custody.

Mr and Mrs Mars

A

MARRIED couple could be sent to Mars in as little as five years’ time as part of Inspiration Mars, a non-profit organisation, mission backed by the world’s first space tourist.

The voyage would take the Mr and Mrs. Astronauts as close as 100 miles from the surface of Mars, although they will not actually land on the Red Planet. They will need to get along; the expedition is expected to take around 16 months.

US space agency Nasa will not be involved, but, the project’s backers - including US multimillionaire Dennis Tito - intend to use a private rocket and space capsule and some kind of habitat that might be inflatable, to make the most of the close approach of the orbits

of Mars and the Earth, which happens only once in a generation. The aim is to use a basic design that could take people to Mars for a fraction of what it would cost Nasa to do. The crew members will have no lander to take them down to the planet and no space suits

for any space walks. They will carry minimal food, water and clothing, and their urine will be recycled into drinking water and they will have to exist in an extremely cramped space capsule. “This is not going to be an easy mission,” explained chief technical officer and potential crew member Taber MacCallum. He would not disclose how much the overall Mars flight would cost, but speculators have put the price tag at more than $1bn (£660m). The trip will get initial funding from Mr Tito, who in 2001 paid around $20m (£13m) to spend seven days in orbit as a crew member of ISS EP-1, a visiting mission to the International Space Station. MacCallum said the decision to send a married couple into space was both symbolic and practical, as they would need each other’s emotional support on the long, cramped voyage. He was part of a team that lived for two years in Biosphere 2, a giant terrarium - or sealed environment - on Earth that was supposed to replicate a mission on another planet. The mission timeline, which is set out in a technical paper, calls for a launch on January 5, 2018, a Mars fly-by on August 20, 2018, and a return to Earth on May 21, 2019. Professor Scott Hubbard, Nasa’s former Mars mission chief, said the paper was “long on inspiration, short on technical details”, but what was in there was correct.

Richard I, known as The Lionheart, heart was preserved and “sweetened” with herbs to make it smell nice after his death, forensic scientists have discovered. The team analysed the organ of the king after removing his remains from a church in France where part of his body was laid to rest.

They found that embalmers preparing him for burial had used mercury and tar-like creosote to preserve the organ. The heart had then been smeared with frankincense, myrtle, daisy and mint to make it smell sweet, before it was wrapped in linen and placed in a lead-lined box. Forensic expert Philippe Charlier, who led the team that carried out the research, said there may have been an attempt to make the body part holier. He said: “We found things that we didn’t expect. The frankincense is something we have never seen until now. It is a substance whose use comes directly from divine inspiration. It was one of the three gifts brought by the Wise Men at Jesus’ birth, and it was used by Joseph of Arimathea to help preserve Jesus’s body at his death. So using it is a direct reference to Christ.” The researchers reached their conclusions after doing an analysis of the compounds surrounding the heart using a technique known as gas chromatography Richard I came to be buried in France, as it was part of the English king’s territory at the time. His heart had been buried in Rouen Cathedral after he was killed at the rebellious French town of Chalus while laying siege to the castle there in 1199. At the time, a king’s organs were often separated from the rest of his body before being placed in the ground. His body is said to have been buried elsewhere, in Fontevraud Abbey in the western Loire Valley, and his entrails interred in Chalus. The final resting place Richard 1 heart was discovered in 1838 when Rouen historian Achille Deville discovered the lead box that contained it in the cathedral’s crypt. However, by the time Mr Charlier’s team were al-

27

Richard 1 Heart Preserved In Tar

lowed to analyse it, the contents of the box had reduced to dust and they were only permitted to take two grams (0.07 ounces) from the 80 grams inside. As well as the materials used to preserve and sweeten it, they found no clearly identifiable tissue, but did find an antibody reaction that suggested a protein found in human muscle. Several bacteria and fungi species were also seen, but none confirmed how Richard died. The scrutiny revealed a tiny scrap of linen and ancient pollen from poplar, oak and pine that probably came from airborne contamination before the box was sealed. King Richard I died in 1199 aged 41 while fighting the French in Chalus, central France, where he was shot in the left shoulder by a crossbow arrow, reputedly by a boy. He died 12 days later, presumably from septicaemia or gangrene, although some folk tales suggest the arrow was deliberately poisoned. He is said to have been king at the time of Robin Hood and he was succeeded by his erroneous and less popular brother John. DNA and carbon dating were impossible because the lead and creosote had caused organic matter to decay. Mr Charlier said 12th Century embalmers were usually cooks and butchers, who were used to cutting meat and removing offal and had access to herbs, spices and other aromatic substances. Contrary to a popular image of the Middle Ages as being barbaric, he said the people who worked on Richard’s heart “were extremely skilled,” combining complex metals, including liquid mercury, with vegetable residues.

Italian Paparazzo Murdered “I

Falled.. really, really far”

An Italian paparazzo, Daniele Lo Presti, 42, who took pictures of Brangelina, Beyonce and dozens of other celebrities has been found shot dead. His body was discovered on a riverside with a single bullet wound to the head, an indication of an ordered hit.

Murder squad detectives have launched an investigation and have not ruled out the possibility he was killed after “crossing” someone in his business. Mr Lo Presti was found in the Testaccio district in the southwest of Rome on a cycling track where he regularly went jogging. Medics called to the scene initially thought he had suffered a fatal heart attack, but called police after they spotted his head wound. Mr Lo Presti was originally from Vibo Valentia in Calabria, the deep south of Italy and home to the local mafia known as the ‘Ndrangheta. Five years ago his car and family had been targeted by arsonists, but police said that was due to “jealousy” and are not linking that incident to his death. A Rome police spokesman said: “Lo Presti was a well-known paparazzo photographer and his scoops embarrassed many people. We are not ruling out a connection between his

work and his death, and we are looking through all his most recent assignments as well as phone and computer records.” His portfolio included Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, as well as Scarlett Johansson and Rihanna, who were all snapped while on holiday in the Mediterranean. He also “papped” designers Stefano Dolce and Domenico Gabbana on their private yacht. Mr Lo Presti was behind glamour photographs of TV hostess Sara Tommasi, linked to former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s infamous

bunga bunga parties. She said: “I’m sorry to hear of his death. Such things should not happen. The city should be safer.” Police said Mr Lo Presti had been out jogging with friends and had become separated from them when he was shot and they had assumed he had gone home. His body was found by a passerby. Mr Lo Presti worked for an agency called LaPresse, last month another of its photographers, 52-year-old Danilo Cerreti, died in a mystery motorbike smash in Rome.

Dylan Hayes, a 4-yearold boy, has to be one of the luckiest small boys around, he was left with barely a scratch after he fell from a third-floor window, somersaulted twice in the air and landing on some rocks below. He smashed through the flyscreen in his family’s living room as he chatted to a neighbour downstairs at the apartment block in Aurora, Colorado. His mother Jessica had moved a sofa under the window while she shampooed her carpets. “I falled ... really, really far,” Dylan told a local television channel. His mother raced

downstairs fearing the worst. “I didn’t know what I was going to see when I got down there ... a child with blood coming out of him,” she said. “I wish the danger would have crossed my mind, which it didn’t.” Dylan landed on his feet but was taken to hospital wearing a neck brace just in case. He was kept in overnight but released after 20 hours with just a few bruises and scratches. Two weeks after the fall, the family has moved out of the apartment and is looking for a new home - on the ground floor.

By John Weatherby

I hAVE facebook to thank for my invitation on-board The World!!

I saw a picture on my newsfeed of a friend that I hadn’t seen in about 20 years, she was in Las Palmas, and so, knowing that she worked on cruise ships I sent her a message asking her if she was docking in Tenerife. I was delighted when she not only said yes, but also that she now worked on-board The World and could put me on the guest list if I wanted to go and have a look around!! Having worked on cruise ships for

over 5 years, I jumped at the opportunity to go on-board and visit another ship, and, having docked alongside The World on a several occasions in ports all over the globe I was particularly curious to have a sneak peak at this unique vessel!! Launched in 2002 ‘The World’ is the largest privately owned yacht on the

planet!! It is 644 feet in length and has 165 private residences ranging from studios to 3 bedroom apartments! Collectively the residents own the ship and each has a voice when deciding on the itinerary and duration of stay, usually around 3 days in a port unless they are there for a particular event when they may stay longer.

After just crossing the Atlantic from its Caribbean season, The World visited the Canary Islands before sailing onto Morocco and then onto Europe. Security is naturally very tight, as with all cruise ships these days. So I had to give all my passport details beforehand to enable my friend to put

Travels The World of them, however, as we were walking along the decks I turned to go into what looked like another hallway with a very expensive looking gold statue in the corner only to be told that this was in fact one of the residencies, the door was open as housekeeping were inside!! There were not too many residents on-board at the time of my visit, they are free to come and go as they please although they are required to give some notice so that the clearance officer can get all paperwork/visas in order but some still call the day before they arrive!! Although smaller than some of the ships I have worked on The World has many of the same facilities if not more!! You can tell that a lot of money has been spent on the style and décor and I was amazed at such a comprehensive library for the size of the ship, but this is a second (or maybe third)

me on the guest list and then present it to the ships security before getting on-board. They scrutinized it to check that every detail was correct and then retained it and gave me a visitor’s badge which was to remain on my person and visible at all times during my visit. Much like an airport, bags must go through an x-ray machine and I had to pass through metal detecting security and then head to reception to meet my friend. She took me straight to the officers mess for lunch, staff are not allowed to eat in passenger restaurants and in fact are not allowed to be in those areas at all unless in uniform! The officer’s mess was fairly small but with quite a good selection; I helped myself to fish, veg and rice, after thoroughly washing my hands of course!! After lunch she showed me around the world!! She explained that as all the cabins/ apartments on-board are privately owned she couldn’t show me inside any

home for the residents and every effort had been made to ensure a luxurious complete escape from their life on land!! Fine dining goes hand in hand with cruise ship life and there are several world class restaurants with some amazing silver and tableware, even square-like goblets that are so expensive they have to be laid down on the tables when not in use so as not to be accidently knocked over. The World has its own tennis court and golf simulator, with over 80 world renowned courses to choose from. The spa offers a variety of treatments such as Balinese massages and you can even choose to sleep under the stars on one of the Bali beds situated on the open deck at the back of the ship! There is a small theatre which is used for showing films and for when local acts come to perform; and an indoor pool which can be covered to make

29

a dance floor for parties or theme nights!! In three weeks’ time, The World will go into dry dock for a refit. This will include a facelift for the reception and stairway areas with some of the private residencies being refurbished. The cost of the latter is obviously down to the owners, some of whom choose a complete refurbishment every couple of years!! I thoroughly enjoyed my visit onboard The World!! The residents or owners can come and go as they please but for the staff and crew, contracts can range from a 4 month on 2 month off rotation up to 11 months or more in one stint! As with all cruise ships a variety of nationalities from all walks of life live and work together in a close knit community to achieve the same goal, customer satisfaction and service excellence!! In this case the customers are also your bosses so it’s very important to have good camaraderie between staff and crew!! The crew bar is always a good place for this to develop and from my past experience and meeting several of the officers, staff and crew they seem to have achieved this in abundance on The World!!

30 Walrus Visits Orkney islands

Tenerife Weekly - 8th March - 14th March 2013

A WALRuS was spotted by a birdwatcher on Bride’s ness beach, north Ronaldsay, Orkney, on Sunday, hundreds of miles from his home territory in the Arctic. The animal, which had tusks around 16 inches (40cm) long, surprised locals on the island as it dozed and relaxed on the beach for most of the day.

It is not known what brought the healthy-looking male to coastline but experts were surprised at how tame and approachable it was. It is the first time a walrus has been seen in the area for 26 years, the markings and scars were said to be similar to those of another animal photographed in the Faroe Islands in February. On Monday there was no sign of the animal and it ap-

pears to have headed back out to sea. Walruses usually live in shallow waters and on sea ice around Canada, Alaska and Greenland. Their population dropped in the 19th and 20th centuries when they were hunted for their blubber, ivory and meat. However, they have now increased in number after hunting became largely illegal. Their main predators are killer whales and polar bears.

First painting leads To First prize

LORI north took up art after retiring at the age of 60, five years ago, and collected her first award at the house of Lords after coming first with her acrylic still life painting. She was so shocked when told she had won a national competition that she thought the phone call was a hoax.

She said: “I’m still getting over the shock. I thought the caller was someone trying to sell me a holiday in Spain!” Together with her husband Andrew, Mrs North ran The Black Horse in Dunsmore and then Time Fashion ladies and menswear shop in Wendover. But after retiring she wanted to fulfil her lifelong dream. “I’ve always wanted to paint, but I never had the time before,” she explained. “When I retired I thought, ‘it’s now or never’. I’m just learning everything I can. I’m still trying to find my style, I’d like to be looser and more abstract, but my winning entry is more classical.” Mrs North’s teacher suggested she enter The EAC Art Awards; run by the Elderly Accommodation Council, a body that encourages older people to carry on with their lives when they stop working, Mrs North goes to a weekly art class at Dunsmore village hall every Wednes-

787 Days To Go!!

The countdown continues to May 4th 2015, I’m still convinced this will be the release date of the hotly anticipated (especially by me) movie “Star Wars-Episode 7”, and with new announcements and rumours popping up daily - here’s the latest titbits I’ve come across!

As I’ve already revealed, Rumours abound that the original trilogy cast could figure in the new episodes and the biggest confirmation of this so far was original “Luke Skywalker”, actor Mark Hamill’s recent interview. During the chat he admitted he, and his co-stars were in talks to reprieve the roles that made them famous. He also shared some of his ideas and opinions about how the new movies should be handled.

“They’re talking to us. George [Lucas] wanted to know whether we’d be interested. “He did say that if we didn’t want to do it, they wouldn’t cast another actor in our parts, they would write us out. I can tell you right away that we haven’t signed any contracts.” He went on to say that he believed his character would play a role similar to the “Obi Wan” character of the first film- an ageing Jedi, instruct-

The Brentmeister Is Back!

Comedy genius Ricky Gervais is finally returning to his most famous creation - the cringe inducing manager from his hit TV series “The Office”.

A one off special made for Comic Relief entitled “The Office Revisited”, it’s the return of David Brent! ‘’I thought it was time to revisit my most famous comedy creation to find out what he’s been up to for the last decade and most importantly what he’s up to now. He is passing on his wisdom to younger would-be rock stars now.” The episode made exclusively for comic relief sees the character working as a door to

ing younger students on the ways of The Force. He also hinted that the younger Jedi in training could very likely be the offspring of his and his sister Leia (not together of course- with their respective partners!) which would make sense as it would be the on-going “Skywalker saga” of which the first 6 movies were primarily about. He also had much to say about going back to “Star Wars” roots instead of continuing along the prequel

door salesman of cleaning products whilst trying to become a music mogul a la Simon Cowell after his own attempt at making it big in the music business failed. ‘’Well, really he is trying to worm his way back into rock and roll. Fans of ‘The Office’ will be excited to know we finally get to hear the whole of ‘The Serpent who guards the gates of Hell’ and an amazing Brent self-funded video ‘Equality Street’. Horrendous.’’ “The Office Revisited” will be shown as part of Comic Relief night this March 15th.

path that so many fans and critics felt were inferior to the originals: “I said to George that I wanted to go back to the way it was, in the sense that ours was much more carefree and light-hearted and humorous, in my opinion, anyway….hope they find the right balance of CGI with practical effects. I love props, I love models, miniatures, matte paintings — I’m sort of old school. I think if you go too far in the direction of CGI it winds up looking like just a giant video game, and that’s unfortunate. If they listen to me at all, it’ll be, ‘Lighten up and go retro with the way it looks.’” In related news, a San Franciscan resident and selfproclaimed Jedi Master at the Golden Gate Knights has begun a light saber combat class, instructing aspiring Jedi on how to fight like their idols. Students arrive at the class in Jedi robes or dressed as their favourite characters and while the movie soundtrack blares out of speakers, they are taught how to thrust and parry with their neon light sabers!!

Dressed as my favourite Sith lord, Gary Ripper said: “I just love Vader, period. Just his voice, the way he moved,

the power of him. I just liked the powerfulness of him.” That’s an exercise class I’d turn up for!!!

“I love you Harry!!”...... Thwack!!

One Direction mophead Harry Styles was given the ultimate token of love from a hysterical fan during a concert in Glasgow last Tuesday - a size 8 straight to the nads!!! The 1D boys were In Scotland performing on their “Take me Home” tour when an object flew onto the stage from amongst the crowd, narrowly missing the boys. Styles bent down and picked the object up, explaining to the audience - who were probably not too bright and needed help understanding - “it’s a shoe”! As he held it aloft the matching item of footwear flew at speed towards him connecting firmly his family jewels and if you’re wondering how I can be sure it “made contact”, trust me, I’ve seen the footage - he drops like a stone, (or maybe someone’s just cut the puppet strings that Cowell uses to operate him!!) The singer remained on the floor for about 30 seconds and another band member was heard shouting “man down”, then the brave boy got back up and after a few stretches, carried on with the performance. Rumours that Taylor Swift was spotted in the audience with a bag from Foot Locker have not been confirmed. The best thing about this story is the boys had been performing their comic relief single “One way or another/Teenage Kicks”...... Maybe one crazy fan thought the teenage kicks bit was a request and long-distanced “kicked” him with her doc marten!!!! Other famous Shoe assaults: George “dubya” Bush

Tony Blair Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Harry Styles- yes, this has happened before, maybe it’s time for Harry to start wearing a cricket cup?

Rubik’s Cube phenomenon

WhILE most of us struggle to complete a Rubik’s Cube, 21-year-old Ravi Fernando has taken the puzzle to a whole new dimension; he solves it while juggling it with two balls. The Mathematics student has become an internet sensation after his amazing accomplishment, which took him around a minute and a half to complete, appeared on the humans of Stanford Facebook page.

Nicknamed Sir Ravi The Juggler by his friends, the undergraduate’s achievement has been viewed on Facebook more than 20,000 times in a day. His efforts have prompted hundreds of comments, most of them just one word, “awesome” or “amazing”. But Steve Pearson suggested he could be the man to solve America’s current financial issues: “I say we put Ravi in charge of solving our national budget problems. “Anyone who can juggle like that would make a great secretary of the Treasury. I can see him now juggling in front of the Senate finance committee as they try to grill him on policy issues.” Mum Leslie Finnegan Conn

added: “When my son first met Ravi in high school, he was already solving one cube in each hand ... in two minutes.” Ravi, from Kirksville, Missouri, has a history of Rubik’s Cube success. He has achieved a run of wins and top 10 finishes in various Rubik’s Cube competitions across the US, according to the World Cube Association website. On the Stanford University website, which also shows the video, says its “research and teaching stresses interdisciplinary approaches to problem solving”. One of the world’s leading research universities, it is “known for its entrepreneurial character, drawn from the legacy of its

founders, Jane and Leland Stanford, and its relationship to Silicon Valley”. Areas of excellence range from the humanities to social sciences to engineering and the sciences. It adds: “Stanford is located in California’s Bay Area, one of the most intellectually dynamic and culturally diverse areas of the nation.” The university is one of the most prestigious in the United States boasting nearly 17,000 students and 19 Nobel laureates on the current staff. The Rubik’s Cube was invented in 1974 by Hungarian Erno Rubik, a sculptor and professor of architecture. Since then more than 350 million have been sold worldwide.

Sharples in Session By John Sharples

Wet And Windy

The recent storm that waded over our lovely Island caused quite a stir and a lot of excitement, particularly with the British residents. Most of the Spanish people that I know, took it in their stride, but us weather loving Brits really got stuck in.

Ok, in all fairness, it was one hell of a windy session and the rain really dropped like an agua blitz, but I think our lack of weather

here had more to do with it. Where I live in the north, the storm was a bit of a damp squib. For a change it was the south that took the battering. The thing is, that is probably it now, until next year. We usually get one a year and it is usually more damaging than the one earlier in the week. I love the rain and over the last few years, we don’t seem to be getting as much as we used to. Oh well, we can all start moaning about how hot it is soon, then there will be chances of a drought!

Jellied Cow

Living It Up The Queen spent a couple of days in hospital with a stomach bug. I wish my mother could get that sort of care and attention with all her illnesses and ailments.

She braves it to hospital appointments in taxis on her meagre pension and she keeps on going. It is as much as she can do to get a doctor to call to the house!

Mmmmmm, Jelly Babies, Wine Gums and Gummy Bears. Aren’t they just scrummy. Did you know that gelatine is made from the bones and hooves of animals like cows etc?

It Gets Worse!

Some people are now asking why there are no checks for horse DNA being made on these sweets. I would like to know the answer to that question too. I love jelly sweets, but the thought of sucking on a cow’s hoof does absolutely nothing for me!

Onwards And Upwards

All of a sudden horsemeat burgers sound absolutely delicious. Human fecal matter has been found in Ikea Chocolate Cake. Where will all this end. What are we actually eating folks? That’s it

for me. I will be buying the raw ingredients myself and making my own burgers and cakes. If I want them to taste like those in ikea, I could always use the loo as a mixing bowl.

These stories are getting worse, but they aren’t any real surprise, after all, we were feeding infected food to cattle that we were going to eat. It is time that food standards were sorted out,

once and for all. Who knows what diseases and illnesses are being caused by this slovenly and shameful approach to the food that we eat by manufacturers. Seriously folks, I know that the big companies aren’t really to blame. It is someone else’s fault; after all, I bought a chocolate bar called PLOPP from a Swedish shop only 5 weeks ago. I saw the name and thought they were selling me chocolate, how was I to know that Plopp was… Oh well!!

Ring Ring

Apparently, Apple is launching the Iphone 5 in august. Who cares?

Was there ever an Iphone1? Was the Iphone1 so bad that it is broken? Are we being conned into buying trash that we don’t need? Well, I for one am not. You can release an Iphone12 for all I care. When will they release a phone with keys that we can ALL see and one that just calls people. Now, there’s an idea!

Hugo Chavez will be mourned by many people around the world. I too am sad that a man of 58 has died. He probably believed that he was doing the right thing for his country. I don’t!

However, Chavez managed to bring stability to a country that needed it. His methods were a little “wild”, but peace reigned, politically, in a country where military coups were a scary presence.

I think that the legacy of the man will be that he managed to bring some democracy to a country that needed it and he managed to be there at the right time. Now, however, Venezuela needs to pull itself together and join the free world as a strong oil nation that wants to advance and grow and not be at odds with the western world. I hope with all of my heart that the new leader will start with a clean slate and befriend us and our allies.

SuBo in Big Shark attack – Screen production Wife Told By Text ThE wife of a man killed by a great white shark at a new Zealand beach was told about the deadly attack by text message as she sat in a cafe. Meg Strange was chatting with a friend near Muriwai Beach in west Auckland when the pair heard there had been an attack.

SInGER Susan Boyle, 51, is to make her big screen debut in the period drama The Christmas Candle. She will join Samantha Barks, hans Matheson and Lesley Manville in the film, which began shooting in the uK last week.

The film, based on the novella by Max Lucado, tells the story of an enchanted Christmas candle in Gladbury,

a quiet dull village that must face up to the dawning of the 20th century and a new, sceptical minister. “Everyone on set is a delight to work with and it’s a fantastic experience to be part of the team,” Boyle said in a statement. “I’m really enjoying getting dressed in the period costumes and stepping back in time and although it’s very cold filming on location - I’m wearing long johns under my bustle.” The singer became an overnight international sen-

sation in 2009 after appearing on the hit show Britain’s Got Talent and singing a perfect rendition of I Dreamed a Dream from the musical Les Miserables. Samantha Barks was most recently in the 2012 film production of Les Miserables and Matheson’s credits include 2010’s Clash of the Titans. Manville is best known for the 2010 movie Another Year. The film’s producers have not revealed which role the singer is playing.

Mrs Strange tried to contact her husband Adam, who she had left at the beach, after finishing an ocean swim. When she got no answer, her friend sent a text message to Muriwai Lifeguard Service chairman Tim Jago. “I got the text, ‘I hear there’s been a shark attack’,” Mr Jago said. “I said, ‘Yes, I’m on the beach now.’ And she said, ‘I’m having a cup of coffee with Meg. She can’t contact Adam.’ “And I had to send a text back saying, ‘It was Adam.’ That’s how quickly it happened.” The prolonged attack by the 12-foot shark shocked

witnesses. Mr Jago reported: “He wasn’t letting go. Normally two boats out there, guns being fired and being whacked over the snout with a paddle a couple of times would be enough.” On eyewitness was at the beach with his daughter when he filmed the event on his phone. ‘’I was going to have a swim but we decided to have a picnic instead, and then we saw the rescue boat racing along the beach along with the quad bike towards Maori Bay,’’ he said. He added that a police car parked next to him and within minutes the police officer was in the rescue boat shooting at the shark to

release Mr Strange’s body. ‘’You could see it clearly, even though it was a fair way offshore. The water spraying up when he fired the gun - rapid fire and then you could hear the sound,’’ he said. Earlier, Mr Jago said Mr Strange was “a good water man” and was well known to the lifeguards who tried to save him who also knew his wife and young son. The lifeguards had been traumatised, and were being offered support and counselling, he said. Mr Strange was a TV commercial director and had worked around the world on several projects.

Butterfly Gardening

Milkweed

E

veryone enjoys seeing pretty butterflies flying in the sunshine and here in Tenerife we have some truly beautiful species of these winged wonders with the Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus) being the most spectacular of all. This species has large reddish-orange wings that are veined with black and its caterpillar is almost as colourful with a yellow, black and white candystriped body. If you have a garden there are ways you can help attract Monarch butterflies and help increase their numbers at the same time.

Adult butterflies need flowers to feed from but the caterpillars eat specific food-plants, and in the case of the Monarch this is any type of milkweed. The Tropical or Scarlet Milkweed (Asclepias curassavica) grows well in Tenerife, and it is because this flower was brought to the island and grown for its ornamental value in parks and gardens that the Monarch Butterfly was able to live here. Monarchs were not always found in the Canary Islands and without having food-plants for their caterpillars to eat they could not survive here. So if you want to see these colourful butterflies, planting Milkweed is the best way to try. The Scarlet Milkweed has red and yellow flowers carried in bunches and adult butterflies will happily sip nectar from them, as will many other pollinating insects. Milkweed is a perennial plant and will keep growing from one year to the next. If you are lucky you might be able to get the plant from some garden centres here where it is sold as “Asclepias,” or an easy way is to buy the seeds online. Just Google the words “milkweed seeds” and you will find hundreds of entries of places where they are available from. There are always plenty of suppliers on Amazon and eBay that sell these seeds very cheaply. The caterpillars are very greedy creatures and will strip a plant of leaves and flowers too so the more

milkweed you grow the better chance you have of feeding them. When they have eaten all they need they look for a place to spin a little pad of silk and then they hang themselves upside down and turn into chrysalises that rival the adult butterflies for their beauty. They are a delicate mint-green and have tiny metallic gold dots on them. Just before the butterflies are ready to

emerge the chrysalises darken a lot and through the transparent outer shell you can clearly see the perfectly formed red and black wings of the butterfly inside. If you don’t have a garden a terrace or balcony will do. I speak from experience because I once managed to see as many as 50 Monarchs fly from mine in just a week after I fed the caterpillars on plants I grew in

flower-pots. It is a very rewarding experience knowing that you have helped increase the population of these beautiful insects in your neighbourhood. Besides growing milkweed for the Monarchs there is a shrub called Lantana (Lantana camara) that many butterflies love to feed from. This bush has yellow and red flowers or white and mauve in the same flower-heads but on different plants. As well as being a popular flower for adult butterflies, the caterpillar of the Death’s Head Hawk Moth (Acherontia atropos) will feed on the leaves of the Lantana. This massive moth gets its name from the marking like a skull on its thorax. This moth was in the publicity posters for the film Silence of the Lambs. It can squeak and raids beehives to steal honey, and although it has a number of superstitions about it this weird insect is totally harmless. The caterpillar is the size of a man’s thumb and is yellow, green or brown with a spike on its tail-end. Another ornamental shrub to grow is the Senna (Cassia didymobotrya). It has bright yellow flowering spikes. This is the food-plant of the African Migrant butterfly (Catopsilia florella). Like the Monarch this species was able to colonise Tenerife because a plant its caterpillars can eat was being grown here. The African Migrant’s female has creamy-coloured wings and the

male is a pale yellow. It can be seen flying fast over shrub borders, especially in the south of the island. If your garden is big enough for a lawn and it has White Clover (Trifolium repens) in it you may well see the dainty little African Grass Blue (Zizeeria knysna). This is a butterfly that does well in resorts and I have seen a thriving colony that lives on a lawn right by a shopping centre in Los Cristianos and another on lawns at the side of the road going into Puerto de la Cruz. Yes, you’ve guessed – the caterpillars eat clover. The adults feed from the flowers too and what we call a weed of lawns is food for butterflies!

Death’s Head Hawk Moth

Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.

He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

Bruce Reynolds, great Train Robber, dies

BRuCE Reynolds, mastermind of the Great Train Robbery, has died at the age of 81 following a short illness just a few months before the 50th anniversary of Britain’s most notorious crime.

His son Nick, an artist and musician, said his father had passed away peacefully: “My dad was a quintessential Englishman who happened to spend some of his life on the wrong side of the tracks.” Reynolds put together the gang that stole £2.6m when it held up the Glasgow to London mail train in Buckinghamshire in August 1963. The robbers were hailed as “latter-day Robin Hoods” after escaping with a haul, worth an estimated £40m in today’s money. However, news that the train driver Jack Mills was attacked during the raid took the edge off their folk hero status and many hated the way their crime was romanticised. Reynolds spent five years on the run, in Mexico, before returning to the UK where he was arrested in Torquay, Devon. He did 10 years in prison, and then jailed again for a drugs offence, but went on to lecture and speak regularly on television about the robbery and other issues related to crime. He never tried to excuse his life of crime and wrote a book called Autobiography Of A Thief, which was to be re-published this year as part

of the anniversary. He once said the robbery and subsequent notoriety had proved a curse, as no-one wanted to employ him either legally or illegally; he struggled to earn a living. The stolen money soon vanished, used to pay off associates for hiding them and keeping quiet, or dumped because it became too contentious. Most of the gang have since died; Buster Edwards hanged himself in a garage from where he ran his popular flower business near Waterloo station. Escapee Ronnie Biggs lives in London after serving a prison sen-

tence imposed when he returned from 30 years’ exile in Brazil. Detectives believe there were more gang members who were never identified. Gangster Eddie Richardson, one of the few criminals who survive from that time, said: “Bruce was alright. He was his own man. He was good company in prison and had a few stories to tell.” Reynolds was once asked in an interview how prisoners deal with a long jail sentence; drawing on one of his favourite Montecristo No 2 cigars he replied: “Easy, you just do it five years at a time.”

St. Patricks Day St. Patrick’s Day Sunday 17th March, here’s a little recipe that I used to make for St Patricks day celebrations when I worked in Liverpool. It’s is rather more of a city dish than a rural one, but totally different, economical, and full of flavour! I always use smoked bacon to make it as it gives that little extra flavour but that is

Dublin Coddle Irish Sausage, Bacon, Onion and Potato Hotpot only my preference, and also I do prefer to use a ham stock cube, but obtaining them on this island can be a bit tricky – but it works just as well with a chicken stock cube!

Ingredients 2 kg potatoes 2 large onions, peeled and sliced thickly 450 g good quality pork sausages 450 g bacon cut into pieces

500 ml water 1 chicken stock cube 3 -4 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped Salt (to season) Coarse-ground pepper (to season)

Method: are used up. Pour the stock mixture over the

Peel the potatoes and cut them into nice sized pieces. Finely chop the parsley. Boil the water and in it dissolve the stock cube.

Grill the sausages and bacon long enough to colour them. If you like, chop the sausages into large pieces. (I prefer to leave them whole.). Preheat the oven to 300F / 150°C In a large heavy pot with a tight lid, start layering the ingredients: onions, bacon, sausages or sausage pieces, potatoes. Season each layer liberally with fresh-ground pepper and the chopped fresh parsley. Continue until the ingredients

Soda Bread Ingredients:

500 g all-purpose flour 50 g white sugar 5 g baking soda

top. Put the pot onto the stove and bring it to the boil; then immediately turn the heat down and cover the pot. (You may like to additionally put a layer of foil underneath the pot lid to help seal it.). Put the covered pot in the oven and cook for at least three hours. (Four or five hours won’t hurt it.) At the two-hour point, check the pot and add more water if necessary. There should be about an inch of liquid at the bottom of the pot at all times. Serve it with soda bread (see recipe) and a bottle of Guinness!

10 g baking powder 3 g salt 115 g margarine, softened 235 ml buttermilk 1 egg Glaze: 55 g butter, melted 60 ml buttermilk (you can buy this in any Lidl in Tenerife)

Method:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease a large baking sheet. In a large bowl, mix together flour, sug-

ar, baking soda, baking powder, salt and margarine. Stir in the 235ml of buttermilk and egg. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead slightly. Form dough into a round and place on prepared baking sheet. In a small bowl, combine melted butter with 60ml buttermilk; brush loaf with this mixture. Use a sharp knife to cut an ‘X’ into the top of the loaf. Bake in preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre of the loaf comes out clean, about 30 to 50 minutes. You may continue to brush the loaf with the butter mixture while it bakes.

Happy St Patricks Day Everybody! Funny St. Patrick’s Day Facts:

• The actual colour of St. Patrick is blue. Green became associated with St. Patrick’s Day during the 19th century. Green, in Irish legends, was worn by fairies and immortals, and also by people to encourage their crops to grow. • The very first St. Patrick’s Day parade was not in Ireland. It was in Boston in 1737. • In Chicago, on St. Patrick’s Day, the rivers are dyed green. • Shamrocks are worn on the lapel on this day. • In Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day, people traditionally wear a small bunch of shamrocks on their jackets or caps. Children wear orange, white and green badges, and women and girls wear green ribbons in their hair. • Many young people dye their hair green for the special day. • Many people wear green on this holiday to avoid being pinched. • The phrase, “Drowning the Shamrock” is from the custom of floating the shamrock on the top of whiskey before drinking it. The Irish believe that if you keep the custom, then you will have a prosperous year. • Lucky Charms, a favourite cereal brand among many, young and old, was created in 1963, with its popular mascot, Lucky the Leprechaun. Its jig is a memorable tune for many, including the young at heart:

Hearts, Stars, and Horseshoes Clovers and Blue moons Pots of gold and rainbows, And the red balloon That’s the luck of me lucky charms! Their magically delicious!

‘Sleeping problems’ ‘Can’t face the real world’

Ever since I lost my job 8 months ago I haven’t been able to sleep well. I toss and turn all night. I look for jobs on the computer each day but always end up falling asleep because I am so exhausted. My husband is really understanding of my situation so I shouldn’t be too worried but I can’t help it. How can I relax with so many worries? Beth

There’s nothing worse than tormenting yourself is there? That’s exactly what you’re doing right now. The job market is tougher than it’s ever been so please stop blaming yourself for the situation.

You don’t have any pressure from your husband so this is all self generated isn’t it? Of course I know being out of work leaves a huge void and it’s clear that you are keen to find a job. At the moment though you have to take the pressure off yourself and stop worrying about this 24/7! The only way for you to relax is to gain some perspective. Whilst your predicament isn’t ideal, it’s temporary and it’s hardly the end of the world. Take a step back and look at the state you’re in, only you can fix that. Stop worrying!

I was raped six years ago. It was an awful time for me but I thought I coped with it quite well and had my life back on track. The other day I saw someone who looked like my attacker and

freaked out. I’ve had trouble leaving the house since, worrying about another attack. I’m ruining my life with my imagination. It’s so frustrating. Kaitlin

Firstly, I’m so sorry that you had to endure such a horrific ordeal Kaitlin. I can’t even begin to imagine going through something like that. Of course you’re right to be proud of yourself for coping so well but every now and then something or someone will remind you. Getting that under control is obviously a priority and you do have to keep telling yourself it’s over, its history. If you find you simply can’t convince yourself that you’re not at risk, it may be a good idea to seek proper help with this. Living your life in fear of something that is almost certainly never going to happen again is no fun at all is it? You sound like a sensible girl and you’ve overcome so much relating to the attack, you just need to push yourself that little bit further and you’ll be fine.

‘haunted house?’ ‘Brother trouble’

I moved into a new house 6 months ago and I’m convinced that it is haunted. I sit up late into the night to try and catch the ghost in action and I’ve spent a fortune on equipment to try and ‘catch’ it. I know it’s all a bit silly. My daughter thinks I’m crazy but I’m completely obsessed. Should I just forget about it? Annie You’ve pretty much answered your own question Annie haven’t you?

No obsession is healthy and even your daughter has commented on yours! The verdict is still out on whether or not we`re surrounded by spirits from the other side so I’m not going to make any judgement on your beliefs at all! I think if you feel this needs proper investigation, you should leave it to the experts. There are hundreds of paranormal investigators advertising online and as far as I know, they would jump at

the chance of investigating this for you. In the meantime, sure, keep your eyes open but get a grip madam! This is overshadowing your entire life right now and that’s what you should be most concerned about. Buying all this equipment and spending hours watching hasn’t helped so far has it? Give up on your solo quest and ask for proper help. That way, you should be able to put this to bed once and for all.

My brother just told me that he is gay. I’m so pleased that he’s finally told me as he had separated himself from our family for a few years now and I think it was to hide this secret. I’m sure my parents would be fine with this and it’d bring my family back together. He’s so worried about it. Shall I tell them myself? Evie It’s not your place to go

telling your parents any of your brothers personal life really is it? In this case, that even more true than most! You may well be right about your parents accepting your brother’s sexuality but how and when they find out is up to him and him alone. If you are dead set on your brother coming out fully, why not speak to him about it and help him to do

it under his own steam? At the end of the day Evie, it’s his life and he has every right to expect your conversations to be private. He’s been through a tough time and what he needs is your love and support, nothing more, nothing less. I have hunch you’ll do the right thing here, it sounds like you love your brother enough for that to happen.

Let’s Dance For Comic Relief Editor Recommends BBC 1 - 19:00 - 20:25

It’s the grand final of Let’s Dance for Comic Relief, and the six finalists will be stepping into the spotlight once more, as they fight for the chance to be crowned Let’s Dance For Comic Relief champion 2013. Among those dancing to win will be Tim Vine, The Soap Stars, Antony Cotton and Katherine Ryan, plus two more acts from the third heat, all of whom will be brushing up their moves for one more performance of those iconic routines. With special musical performances from Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars, this star-studded show will be the ultimate finale. This week, the power is entirely in the hands of

the viewers, as their votes will decide who will be crowned the twinkle-toed champion of the dance floor. The panel of judges, Frank Skinner, Jo Brand and Greg Davies will be offering their opinions on all of the performances. Over the past four weeks, 15 celebrity dance acts have paid homage to iconic dance routines, performing to songs from stars such as Robbie Williams, Lady Gaga, Destiny’s Child and The Spice Girls. Last year it was Rowland Rivron who stole the show, with the brilliant routine to Fatboy Slim’s Weapon Of Choice. Who will dance their way to victory and take the crown this year?

Being Eileen BBC 1 - 22:35 - 23:05 In the final episode, Birthday, Paula and Ray have spent weeks preparing for Liam’s pirate-themed birthday, but all is ruined when Paula drills through a water pipe while hanging up a porthole.

They decamp to Eileen’s house and promise to downsize their party ambitions, but Ray still brings his homemade multi-story pirate ship, which takes over the entire garden and is probably visible from space. Paula becomes increasingly hysterical, and freaks out completely when she realises that her

43

watch has stopped and she’s nowhere near ready for the guests to arrive. Eileen has to sedate her with a tot of whiskey, which has mixed results. Meanwhile, Mandy is hardly in the party mood as she’s suffering from a particularly virulent bug, while Ray is all dressed up to welcome his parents, who’ve never actually made it to one of the kids’ parties before and Eileen has a surprise visitor from their last Christmas holiday in Lapland... The series stars Sue Johnston as Eileen, Elizabeth Berrington as Paula, William Ash as Ray, Julie Graham as Mandy and Dean Andrews as Pete.

A Very British Wedding BBC 2 - 20:30 - 21:30

The traditional British ‘white wedding’ has evolved - in the multi-cultural Britain of today, a typical wedding can encapsulate a vast range of traditions, religions and cultures.

A new four-part series for BBC Two, A Very British Wedding looks at this new wave of nuptials, following couples from different cultures on the journey to their wedding day. The series explores the observance of centuries-old traditions, family dynamics and how religion continues to be at the heart of many communities. At the heart of proceedings are the wedding planners - from mums to professionals - who take

responsibility for making sure all goes smoothly on the big day. This first episode follows Sikh couple Kami and Dav as they get married in a Gudwara - a Sikh Temple - treading the same steps their ancestors did in the northern Indian state of Punjab hundreds of years ago. Meanwhile, Eastern Europeans Sasha and Vlod are looking to stick to certain traditions originating from Eastern Europe, and are keen to observe one in particular - fun. Responsibility for all the fun and games falls to Planner Julia, who flies in from Latvia to provide the entertainment on the big day.

Match with two superb blacks. In a match where more white balls were potted than in a round of golf, it all came down to the last frame decider. Could Nauta B do the double over their rivals? It wasn´t to be as Jack eventually potted the black to get the draw. A great night; no-one was sent off, no red or yellow cards, no irate captain´s handshakes and smiles all around. How it should be? Take note Man. Utd. Trap Door 10 v 0 Barracuda hunters During the last meeting of these teams, at Barracuda, there was a paranormal event. During Helen’s game for the home side, the table levitated, span round and came crashing down on Jamie’s foot, giving the lovely Helen the frame, - their only frame! The return match at the Trap Door had no pint pots or ornaments flying off the shelves, - Barracuda´s haunting 10 ~ 0 loss, means they have no power away from home. MCLAREn are to use honda engines as the Japanese company returns to Formula 1 for the first time since 2008.

Honda pulled out of F1 after years of poor results with its own team, which subsequently won the championship as Brawn in 2009 and is now Mercedes. But the engine manufacturer has decided to return because of next year’s in-

troduction of turbo engines featuring energy recovery technology. McLaren are first expected to race with Honda engines in 2015. A McLaren spokesman said: “We never discuss media rumours about potential partners.” Mercedes, which currently supplies McLaren’s engines, said it could not comment on its partner’s plans, but its F1 executive director Toto Wolff said: “We are looking for a

long-term engine supplier relationship with McLarenMercedes.” McLaren has a contract with Mercedes with options for the team to renew for 2014 and 2015. McLaren are expected to take up only the first of those options. Honda president Takanobu Ito on 8 February admitted that the company was “studying” the idea of an F1 return. The company has not yet officially confirmed its plans to return.

Murray to face donskoy or ito

Andy Murray will return to action at Indian Wells this weekend with the world number two ranking in his sights.

The Briton could overtake Roger Federer in the rankings if he reaches the final and the Swiss falls before the semis. Third seed Murray has a bye in round one and opens against Evgeny Donskoy or Tatsuma Ito on Saturday or Sunday. The BNP Paribas Open will see Murray, Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal at the same tournament for the first time since Wimbledon last summer. Nadal was out for seven months with a serious knee injury before returning to action on clay in Latin America last month, and Indian Wells will be the first test of his knee on the more punishing hard courts. The Spaniard will play Ryan Harrison or Go Soeda in his first match and, having slipped to fifth in the rankings, could face Federer as

early as the quarter-finals. World number one Djokovic has made a 13-0 unbeaten start to the season in tour matches and opens against Fabio Fognini or Aljaz Bedene in Indian Wells, with Murray a potential semi-final opponent. The Scot will be playing for the first time since losing to Djokovic in the Australian Open final in January. Fellow Britons Heather Watson and Laura Robson are in the women’s draw, with Watson up against Romanian Irina Camelia-Begu in round

one and Robson taking on Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden. Victoria Azarenka is the top seed in the absence of Serena Williams, and the Belarusian could face Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova in the second round. Williams and her sister Venus have boycotted the Indian Wells tournament since 2001, when Serena was booed in the final after Venus had pulled out of a semifinal with her sibling, citing injury. Their father, Richard, felt they were the victims of racial abuse during the final.

Spurs host Inter Milan

Tottenham Hotspur will be hoping to carry their domestic form into the first leg of a Europa League last-16 clash with Inter Milan. Spurs have been flying in the Premier League of late, with victory over north London rivals Arsenal on Sunday seeing them secure a fourth straight win - to cement their standing in third place.

Their performances in continental competition have been a little patchy, though, with a last-minute effort from Mousa Dembele required to see them past Lyon at the round of 32. They have, however, won their last three European

The Wild Bull Coast FM Darts league was in action again last Sunday with the “preliminaries” in the League Handicap Competition. This season sees a change to the format with the new system being introduced. As is normal each team is allocated the points system based on league positions the difference this year is the game format and as teams came to terms with it throwing up some high scoring games the theory being that the lower teams have points advantage making games even more similar to the golf system with 24 games to go at and a decider if still the scores are even.

ish referee Cuneyt Cakir after full-time following the decision to send off Nani. United lost the tie 3-2 on aggregate.

But European football’s governing body will take action over Nani’s red card and the “non-fulfilment of postmatch media obligations” at Old Trafford. United were leading 1-0 on the night - and 2-1 on aggregate - when referee Cakir dismissed Nani for a high challenge on Alvaro Arbeloa in the 56th minute. Ferdinand, 34, was visibly upset at the full-time whistle as he and his United teammates surrounded the match officials.

Ferdinand Avoids Sanctions

Rio Ferdinand will not face disciplinary action from Uefa for his conduct following Manchester United’s Champions League loss to Real Madrid. Ferdinand sarcastically applauded in the face of Turk-

fixtures on home soil, suggesting they will be looking to establish a commanding lead over Inter on Thursday. The Italian giants will arrive in London on the back of an inconsistent run in Serie A, with a top-four finish far from guaranteed. Inter can take heart from their away showings in the Europa League, though, and

will fancy their chances of claiming a positive result in midweek. The last time the two clubs met, back in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League, Spurs ran out 3-1 winners at White Hart Lane, with Gareth Bale - who had previously netted a hat-trick in a 4-3 defeat in Italy - causing Inter all kinds of problems.

failed to apply themselves properly. “It’s the fourth consecutive time in the first innings of an overseas Test that England have been bowled out for less than 200 - here, Dubai, Galle and Ahmedabad,” he said. “You could kind of understand the three others to some extent because of the sub-continental style pitches and England’s batting against spinners - they perhaps had a reputation before that Test series victory in India of struggling in the sub-continent. “This really is totally inexplicable. I don’t think there was any real moisture in the pitch. It is a flat, flat pitch and the sun was out for most of the day. Conditions were quite blustery this morning, quite

difficult conditions to bowl in. “Without disparaging New Zealand’s attack, it is a workmanlike attack by Test match standards. “They were eager. I thought Brendon McCullum’s captaincy was excellent. But really there is no explanation why England should be bustled out for well less than 200 in just 50-odd overs. “I think there was an element of complacency about England’s batting. Trott showed a bit of application but there wasn’t much application from the rest. “I thought Kevin Pietersen got a very good ball and that can happen to any player, no matter how great you are when you first come in. But the wickets of Ian Bell, Matt Prior, Cook and Stuart Broad were gifted away.”

‘Complacent’ England batting to blame

England batted with “an element of complacency” as they folded to 167 all out on day two of the first Test against New Zealand, says Mike Atherton.

Alastair Cook’s side struggled from the off with only Jonathan Trott (45) getting to grips with conditions in Dunedin following the opening day washout. Worse was to follow for the tourists as Hamish Rutherford and Peter Fulton put on an unbroken openingwicket stand of 131 before stumps at the University Oval. Reflecting on the day’s play, former England captain Atherton told Sky Sports that most of the visiting batsmen

Cd Marino Blues Fade To grey in home draw Aaron

DESPITE a rousing first half CD Marino didn’t do enough to win at home to SS Reyes but the visitors will feel happy to have escaped with a 1-1 draw that makes little difference to either side.

Reyes opened strongly with Ismael hooking the ball over the bar from a good position and Hector Gomez firing wide. Marino were again forced into changes by suspensions and injury, Rafa Hernandez looked comfortable springing forward from left back and Pablo showed his defensive strength with a solid block to stop Javi from breaking through. The referee threw a spanner in the works by awarding Reyes a penalty for a hand ball by Rayco, even some of the sparse crowd in the far stand could see the ball had hit his chest. Alberto is making a name for himself as a penalty saver; he dived and parried

Javi’s spot kick for Ayoze to head the loose ball to safety. Balduino was doing his best alone up front, he did get some help from Aaron just behind him but maybe the big built Iker could have been used a bit further forward to help win the high balls. Sandro’s cheeky back heel was followed with a pass back to Balduino but he slipped on the rain affected surface and a few minutes later his luck was no better when he flashed the ball across the goal mouth but no one was there to add the goal touch. After 20 minutes Marino were caught with a sucker punch, the ball broke to Ismael after his team mate had taken a wild swing and missed, Ismael banged in a powerful shot that eluded the defence and Alberto to take the lead. That seemed to sting the home team into action, they charged forward but Hector blocked a shot with a hint of a hand, the ref just ignored the appeals for

a penalty. Sandro having another creative game curled in a teasing corner that Ayoze got up to head but Eladio reacted quickly to save with one hand. Sandro is so often the goal maker but after 27 minutes he was in space with a clear view of goal as Pablo worked the ball in from the right and picked him out, Sandro shook off a challenge from Ramon to level the score at 1-1. Barcos broke through and was about to unload his shot when Eladio raced out to intercept. The last effort of the half fell to Balduino doing the hard work of beating Amaya before firing the ball the wrong side of the post. All was set fair for a home win in the second half, Reyes were a negative bruising side and Marino had shown they could cause them plenty of harm but they failed to push on and chase the win. Most of the second half action took place in midfield and Balduino was struggling with

Balduino

the burden of leading the attack. Eladio made a rushed clearance from his goal but the chance went unpunished as Marino weren’t sharp

enough. Balduino showed his frustration when 20 minutes after the restart he beat the defence to put another ball past an open goal, again the support wasn’t there and Reyes were let off. Diego had plenty of time to increase the visitors lead but Iker was back to block and deny the chance. Marino still looked the more likely

Iker Izeta & Ayoze Placeres

to shade the win but as the game drifted on Reyes had one eye on the point. Injury time should have seen a final push but it was Reyes who took the ball down the other end, thankfully Alberto was alert and made two routine saves to seal the draw.

away Form Comes Back To haunt Cd Tenerife SuRPRISE changes to the starting line up left CD Tenerife looking very ordinary as they slipped to an unexpected 1-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid. It wasn’t so much bringing in January signing Carlos Portero for his midfield debut that didn’t work; it was starting without either wide player Suso or Chechu. Creating chances from attacking play down the flanks has been a hallmark of Tenerife’s style but they were left looking flat and short of ideas as the lead at the top of the division was cut to six points.

Aridane

Tenerife couldn’t make any impact in the first half and Aridane was well off the pace up front. It was a big difference

from the 4-0 hiding inflicted on Madrid in Santa Cruz earlier in the season. Moyano, normally Mr Reliable fouled Omar on the half hour to give away a penalty, Sergio Aragoneses made a great stop with an outstretched foot to save his full backs blushes. Changes were inevitable in the second half with Suso on for Cristo Martin and Chechu replacing Loro who had squandered the best chance of the game with a weak header at the goalie. Tenerife were living dangerously and paid the price after 76 minutes, Thomas picked up the ball on the left wing and crashed it into the net with Sergio partially unsighted by his defence. Guillem took over from Carlos but despite two clear chances there was no way back. This Sunday it’s Guijuelo at home with selection problems as Moyano and Aridane sit out suspensions after both picked up bookings in Madrid.

CB Canarias Caught Cold in Basketball derby

I

T was just a short hop between islands but CB Canarias paid the price for being slow starters in the ACB basketball derby at Gran Canaria, going down 78 to 70. The home side roared into a big lead in the first few minutes and ended the first quarter 27-13 ahead, it was too much of a mountain to climb even backed by 300 traveling fans among the 5,171crowd.

Jakim Donaldson had an off day on defence for CB Canarias and found Ryan Toolson too hot to handle as he swept to 22 points. Trailing 41-25 at the halfway stage the La Laguna side started to reel their opponents in but ran out of time. Levi Rost and particularly Nico Richotti both with 10 points kept narrowing the gap and Blagota Sekulic led the scoring with 12 points but Gran Canaria were lethal on the rebounds and made sure they did enough to hold onto their lead. This Sunday is one of the glamour ties of the season as Barcelona come calling for a tip off in front of the biggest crowd since promotion.

3 Times Challenged in The Santa Cruz Triathlon

Jesus Chagoyen & Jaime heras

TEnERIFE’S capital city may have been the downfall of Lord nelson but 430 sporting heroes will be looking to excel on Sunday in the Santa Cruz Triathlon. Competing over differing distances and in evenly matched age

groups the athletes will all be aiming for the finishing area next to the Auditorium.

The half endurance event starts at 8.30 am and consists of a 1.9 km swim off the beach at Las Teresitas, a 90 km cycle ride, and a 21 km run. The triathlon starts

at 2 pm and follows the traditional challenge of a 1.5 km swim, a 40 km cycle ride, and finally a 10 km run. Some of the keenest competitors from across Spain will be taking part following the swim with circuits of the main coast road linking Las Teresitas with Santa Cruz where the presentations will take place.
