Mare Nostrum resort celebrates the 25th anniversary of the first 5-star hotel in southern Tenerife. The Mediterranean Palace hotel opened its doors in March 1988 as the first luxury hotel on Las Américas beach.
The Mediterranean Palace Hotel, managed by Expo Hoteles & Resorts, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. It opened its doors for the first time on 14 March 1988 with the aim of becoming a luxury hotel of note in Europe. The excellent weather and the beauty of an island with great prospects for tourist growth were the main factors for Mediterranean Palace to be built on the Las Américas beach, a place where there had been little building development up to then.
It was the first 5-star hotel in southern Tenerife, breaking away from the normal trend in the area of building lower category hotels that marked a before and after in this area. The hotel is built on a ground area of 20,000 m2, with a main façade of more than 280 m. Apart from its 535 rooms and suites; we should also highlight its huge
central swimming pool, the marble and rich material finishes and the majestic crystal chandeliers illuminating the lobby. In the words of Jordi Mestre, Executive President: “When we started building the hotel, the motorway only went as far as the Reina Sofia Airport. There were no infrastructures in the area, the telephone lines were few

to seeing you all there. How nice it was to see, page 11, that life expectancy in Spain is top of the league at 81.4 years. Well that is good news. However, the figures are based on the fact that the diet here is so much better than in the U.K. So I have to assume that pie and chips and the odd bacon sarnie, probably means that I should really take notice of the U.K life expectancy figure of 79 instead! How about you? See you all next week.

and far between and there were hardly any shops… and the National Police did not even have a station there. The most unexpected thing of all was that we precisely decided to build in Tenerife because we were guaranteed good weather and then on the day we opened the hotel, it rained”. This is how he remembers those times, when he was just 25 years old. At that time, “room and half board in the luxurious Mediterranean Palace cost an average of 13,800 Pesetas in the former currency and this guaranteed an unforgettable stay, superb cuisine and traditional good service, with staff wearing a white shirt and bowtie”, added Esteban Sedano, Manager of Mare Nostrum Resort. This was why so many personalities have chosen the hotel to spend their holidays, such as Joan Manuel Serrat, Gila, Pedro Carrasco, Neil Armstrong, Mercedes Milá and Amancio Ortega, among many others. A short time after Mediterranean Palace, Sir Anthony was opened located on the sea front and with an even more exclusive profile. This
hotel became very popular for its pools on the terraces, something that was greatly appreciated by guests and residents at that time. After this, the Cleopatra Palace, Marco Antonio Palace and Julio César Palace followed, nowadays unified under the name of the Egyptian queen. Shortly after this, the Pirámide de Arona auditorium opened its doors where the dance shows of Carmen Mota have been performed for more than 16 years. However, Mediterranean Palace has always stood out for enhancing guest experience, from their arrival until they leave the resort, to exceed their expectations and make them loyal. This is proven by the fact that at the moment 28% of our guests are people repeating the experience. Due to the constant contribution to the hotel development in the south of Tenerife, Antonio Mestre, Honorary President of Expo Hoteles & Resorts, the chain Mare Nostrum belongs to, has been awarded various prizes recognising this innovating vision and endless search for a high
quality leisure offer. It has also been recognised for its promotion of the congress infrastructure, which has unquestionably contributed to the tourist sector on the island being stronger. Looking towards the next few years, the hotel will continue aiming at offering its guests a stay that exceeds their expectations, always supporting Corporate Social Responsibility due to which various charity events are currently being organised to collaborate with the most needy on the island in order to support the people of Tenerife. As Jordi Mestre points out: “Our Company has always believed in Tenerife and its people and will continue to do so”. In order to commemorate this 25th Anniversary, a series of events will be held up to the end of the year, thus reinforcing its commitment to the island and its guests, and thanks to the collaboration of companies such as Transalex, this has been made possible. www.marenostrumresort. com

Where’s The Water??
By Marc Craig
Almost two years after the center of Santa Cruz was declared a zone of touristic interest, the Canarian government’s director general for commerce, Gustavo Matos, and the councilor for the development society, Florentino Guzmán Plasencia have been trying to convince shop owners to take advantage of the freedom of opening hours which this declaration allows. A first agreement now means the shops will open on the first Sunday of each month. If this is successful, and shoppers’ habits change, the city’s shops will open on Sundays all year. The new tunnel under the Plaza de España in Santa Cruz is taking shape. Last week, the Santa Cruz council’s traffic and road safety section began asphalting areas adjacent to the coastal road. Work was been done overnight, and will continue until next Monday, weather permitting. Asphalting work will continue on Avenida Francisco de la Roche, at its intersection with Calle Republica de Honduras. The tunnel, connecting the Cabildo with the Avenida de Anaga, should open at the end of this month. The Canarian government has agreed to apply to the independent community’s liquidity fund for 421.8 million euros, the maximum allowed by central government. The councilor for economy and taxation, Javier González Ortíz, said that this would cover 40% of the islands’ needs, and denied that the regional government was in trouble. He said that by using this fund, the government would save 70 million euros in interest which would be payable if it obtained credit in the markets. Caixabank has announced that the restructuring process, regarding the technological and operative integration of Caja-Canarias, had been completed with total success, seven months after the fusion with Banca Civica. In the last phase of the process, over 300 cash dispensers were adapted. Caixabank said that it had all been completed without any incidents, and ahead of schedule. CajaCanarias clients now have a network of over 6,000 and over 10,000 cash dispensers at their disposal. Black money circulating in the Canaries in 2009 is thought to have formed twenty eight point seven per cent of gross interior product, over eleven thousand six hundred and fifty million euros. By provinces, Tenerife accounted for the largest part. Black money earned in underground work in the islands exceeds three thousand nine hundred million euros a year, the majority again in Tenerife. Tax officials say this implies that each inhabitant is hiding income of six thousand eight hundred euros a year, and that this is not helped by the government’s politics. British supermarket chain Asda has begun to sell Canarian bananas in the UK. This is the first time in 40 years that a British company has opted for Canarian bananas, instead of the traditional Caribbean version. The bananas are transported to Southampton on the same refrigerated nonstop ships used by the tomato exporting associations Fedex and Aceto. The company Fyffe is responsible for the distribution and ripening of the fruit, which will be sold in eight hundred supermarkets across the UK. A 42-year-old Adeje man, originally from Cape Verde, is under arrest accused of killing three members of his own family in their home in Calle Basalto in Piedra Hincada, Guía de Isora. One of the victims was his 4-yearold son, his 34-year-old partner and a man of 60. He was stopped around 9pm this evening after leaving the house carrying a knife and shouting that he had killed his family. He was found to have slashed his wrists, and was taken to Candelaria hospital where he remains under police guard.
Email Marc: marc@tenerife-weekly.com The recent wind and rain was, for me a welcome change, but it did get me thinking - on an island where it rains less in a year then England gets in a day (probably) - where does all our water come from? There’s no desalination plant as far as i know, i’ve driven all over the island and never seen a huge reservoir, yet in 13 years we’ve never had a hosepipe ban and plant irrigation is everywhere and the 2 million residents and 10 million visitors a year can shower and bathe to their hearts content. So, how do they do it? Bet you don’t know!
More than 80% Tenerife’s water supply comes from a natural, sustainable source that we owe to an incredibly hard working local effort that’s difficult to comprehend. Because volcanic rock is permeable, rainwater, melting snow and forest condensation - amazingly, the 12 inch long Canarian pine needles collect and pass daily condensation to the soil, increasing the amount of precipitation by 3 times!! All this seeps through the topsoil of the mountainous highland, until it reaches the non-porous rock layer deep underground. Most of the water for domestic consumption is taken from these subterranean galleries and
wells (over 1,000 galleries and over 500 wells up to 100 metres deep). All of these had to be dug over more than 1,700km of mountainous terrain, and then pumped through 4,000km of pipeline to reach your kitchen tap!! Agriculture takes 50% of the overall water
consumption in Tenerife although a small amount comes from small external reservoirs you may have seen driving around the highlands. There are indeed several desalination and de-mineralization plants, although they don’t process
seawater like the huge ones, they process the natural water that tends to be high in minerals and salt. So, next time you turn on your tap, think of all the workers that carved wells into the rock so we never need to hear the words “hosepipe ban”!!
www.tenerife-weekly.com Gran Canaria and Tenerife South airports have announced that they are to follow in the steps of Barajas Airport. The Madrid based airport has begun installing machines to charge passengers one euro for the use of luggage carts as part of an initiative which AENA hopes will save 3.2 million Euros per year. AENA has stated that it has “no start date” for the implementation of the payment at Barajas airport, which will become the first of the seven airports where the company intends to use the new system.
Airports that will be charging for the use of trolleys are Madrid – Barajas, Barcelona – El Prat, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Gran Canaria, Tenerife South and Alicante. AENA has said that the charge will only apply in “public areas” of the airports; the boarding

area will remain free of charge. AENA went on to say that this new model of management and maintenance of baggage trolleys is part of the measures put in place to “add value to the company in order to make it sustain-
able and economically viable while maintaining the supply of a quality service.” According to AENA’s calculations, the Barajas airport currently spends 3.7 million Euros per year to the “management
and maintenance of luggage trolleys” and with this new system the amount will be reduced to 500,000 Euros - an estimated saving of 3.2 million Euros. AENA has said that the new system of charging for trolley’s is
similar to that of other European facilities, such as the German airports of Munich, Hahn, Cologne and Dusseldorf, the Italian airports of Milan, Genoa, Turin and Rome (Fiumicino) and in Athens in Greece.
Canary Islands Island of Evil? Flight Numbers Down
Air traffic in the Canary Islands fell by 8.87% (249,672 people) in February 2013 in comparison to the same month in 2012 according to data released by AENA.
Operations were also down last month by 15.6% totalling 23,097 take-offs and landings, 4,285 less than the same month in 2012. The highest decline in operations was seen in La Palma with 31.6% less operations than the same period last year with a drop in passengers of 21.4%. Fuerteventura was also affected with a drop in flights of 21.9% and a decrease of passenger numbers of 16.3%. The busiest airport in the Canary Islands in February was Gran Canaria, which recorded 7,733 operations, down 14.1% with 835,154 passengers, down 8%, followed by Tenerife South, which was used by 734,822 passengers, down 3.9%, with operations down by 4,572, down 7.9%, and Lanzarote which handled 363,265 travellers, down 8.5%, and a reduction in operations of -16.5%. Fuerteventura’s airport operation numbers dropped
by 21.9% with 302,235 passengers traveling through the airport, Tenerife North’s airport Los Rodeos recorded 3,748 flights, -17.2%, with 248,512 travellers -11.7%, and La Palma had 1,078 operations, -31.6%, with 68,905 travellers -21.4%. El Hierro also suffered a decline in the number of operations (-16.5%) and the passenger numbers were 10,515, a drop of -19.6%, while La Gomera increased slightly the number of operations to 123, +3.4%, but with far fewer passengers, 1,308 a drop of 25.3%. In the first two months of 2013, the airport of Gran Canaria was used by 1.71 million passengers, 6.9% less than the same period of 2012, Tenerife South, 1.48 million, a drop of 4.9%, Lanzarote, by 738,393 passengers, -8.7%, Fuerteventura, by 614,768, -9.1%, and Tenerife North, by 506,944, -12.8%.
By Marc Craig In this world of postHarry Potter, the word witch no longer has such a stigma attached, but not all that long ago it was a word that provoked fear, suspicion and often violent death to the suspected practitioners.
Of course, most “real” witches are not evil but rather Wiccans who follow Harmless Pagan traditions- but I wanted to discover more about black magic and its association with witchcraft and whether Evil truly exists and if so, is it here, on this Island? I found witches..... But I also found much more... 1 - Las Brujas del Bailadero de Anago The village of San Andrés or Saint Andrew, 10 km north of Santa Cruz, is one of the oldest villages on the island, home to a castle built to protect the village from pirates and also the place where the famous Guanche “Mummy of San Andrés” was discovered. But on its outskirts, you’ll find “El Bailadero” meaning either “dancing place” or taken from the Guanche word “baladero”, literally “bleating place”. Guanches
would lead their sheep here in the hopes that their bleating would persuade the gods to send rain, later, according to legend, witches would light bonfires to dance around whilst practising witchcraft and sacrifice. The legend also tells of witch hunts - although not the kind you would imagine, after their coven met, the “wicked womenfolk” including young girls would hunt the slopes for lone men that, once captured, they would “encircle and harm”. Indeed, the area gave Horatio Nelson and his men more than they bargained for- one night in July, 1797 they ventured onto the coven’s sacred ground, it is said they sensed the witches watching them from above and spooked and fearing mortal danger, they quickly left the area. Some say that these covens still exist and although they have periods of dormancy, still hunt those eerie slopes. 2 - Spanish Satanism on the rise Political, economic, religiousfor whatever reasons, interest and participation in satanic cults and rituals seems to be increasing in Spain and Spanish speaking countries. Many people from South American
countries - which are the home nations of a large portion of the Canary Islands inhabitants, are more frequently looking to black magic rituals, including sacrifice, in exchange for material reward and protection in these hard times. Mainland Spain has also seen an increase in Devil worship and the Dark Arts, and a side effect of this seems to be a rise in Church break-ins, in which the motives seem to be the theft of consecrated and sacred artefacts, worth large sums of money, depending on the object and which priest consecrated it. These items are used in satanic rituals and there is a Black Market that deals in selling stuff to Satanists. All this renewed interest has inevitably spilled over into the Canary islands with rumours of an unnamed Satanic Group looking to “ turn the Canary Islands into the world headquarters of Satanism” and through the pages of its Journal 1COR (its name is taken from the abbreviation of 1 Corinthian , a passage in the Bible which includes the sentence; “hand this man over to Satan”) offers merchandise available in the Canaries including a ceremonial blade described as being; “ideal for decapitating sacrificial victims”, which led to the publica-
tion and the cult behind it to be investigated by the authorities. 3 - Desecration in Arona Cemetery In 2007, Fortnightly Tenerife News reported; “Voodoo, black magic or Satanism, call it what you like, the gruesomely shocking results have scandalized the residents of Arona and have angered and horrified the relatives of those whose bodies have been desecrated by some profoundly unbalanced individuals.” Apparently the desecration included the digging up of bodies and the stealing of body parts. Arona cemetery had been associated with Ritual practices before; “On previous occasions candles, coins and the remains of chickens have been found by the rear wall, evidence of bizarre nocturnal rituals.” This however seems more to be the result of traditional African sorcery, a fringe practice condemned by the mainstream “Voudoun” priests. So, what do you think? Are witches, demons and The Devil just made up beings to frighten and perhaps take the blame for evildoings of Man... Or does true Evil really exist? Bringing the message of St. Patrick
MArCH 17th is that special day when the South of Tenerife goes green and people no matter where they come from originally, become ‘irish’ for a day!!!
Well this year it is going to be even more special, it is the day when Cristianos Community Church celebrates its official inaugural service including a touch of ‘official’ Irish presence, well after all the Pastor and his wife are from Ireland…yes really! Adrian and Lorraine McBride are no strangers to Tenerife having previously pastored South Tenerife Christian Fellowship for over five years until 2010 where Adrian was well known for his dynamic ministry, great sense of humour and community spirit. They returned to Northern Ireland to become part of the team of Drop Inn Ministries, a Christian Charity based in Northern Ireland, Bringing Hope, Help and Healing to people in eighteen countries around the World. Lorraine managed one of Drop Inn’s Charity Shops
He first came to Tenerife in 1989 for a two year trial. He had travelled around the world as a child with his father who was serving with the RAF. He believed that the change in culture in Tenerife would be beneficial for his family. Mac started work at Royce’s but soon made a successful career in the construction business. He supported The Lions with a passion, only matched by his love of music; Dylan and Morrison were his favourites. More recently, he was extremely proud when both of his sons, Aaron and Leon, made names for themselves in the music business. He was an avid Chelsea fan and made the trip to Barcelona every year to watch his other sporting heroes at Formula 1. Mac had been married to his wife Tina for 39 years. He was a proud grandfather to Aaron and his wife, Norkis’ children Jayden and Hannah, and had a great relationship with Leon and his partner Maria. He leaves his mother, Peggy, sister Jill and brothers Ian and Clive, mother-inlaw Jenny and brother and sister-in-law Gail and Mick. Good bye Mac, a hero to some and a legend to others. You will be missed.

They have returned to Tenerife with a wealth of practical experience and a heart for the thousands who make up the ex-pat community living in the South of the Island to offer them a place where they can find real Compassion, Comfort and Care.
So before you join the rest of Tenerife in painting the town green, why not join them at the Princessa Dacil Hotel on Sunday at 11am to hear what St. Patrick really did for Ireland and how his message still has meaning for Tenerife today. To quote Adrian himself “We would love to see you and invite you to join us mark this special occasion........ have a Happy St. Patricks Day!” For further details www. crisitanoscommunitychurch. com or telephone Pastor Adrian McBride 608 409 016.

Yeremi - Still Missing After 6 Years
Yeremi Vargas vanished on March 10, 2007, six years ago, and so far not a single trace of him has ever been found, not a single clue as to his wherea-
bouts. Despite this, his grandfather, José Suárez, and his mother, Ithaisa Suárez, are convinced that he “will soon be back with us.”
“We are confident that the hard work carried out by the Guardia Civil will soon bear fruit,” said Suárez, on the anniversary of his disappearance. “It is true that we are saddened when we see that we have reached another 10th March and still he is missing, but we have great hope that Yeremi is very close and that they will find him,” he added. “Yeremi is present in everything we do and we are still very confident that soon we will have him here at home, where we have kept all of his clothes, even though they will not fit him now,” said Ithaisa who recently married. “The family has endured so much, we often want to cry when we are supposed to be celebrating something because we feel his absence and we would have liked that he was with us. My work and Jonathan have helped me a lot and I am very grateful to him because he has made everything related to Yeremi,” assured the mother. Mima Santana also maintains her hope to reunite with her grandson, who would be 13 now,
“My husband and my daughter are secure and very confident and I hope soon to see it”, she says with natural serenity. “After the announcement of a reward to anyone who can give reliable clues of the whereabouts of the child, we received more than 2,000 calls”, she said. “Although they have not paid out yet, anytime now the Civil Guard will find him”. The family is very satisfied with both the work of the Civil Guard, and constant communication between them. “This morning they have been here with us and as they do on every anniversary, their presence is permanent,” said Jose who says that his life is completely focused on Yeremi. “I’m going to a party or anywhere and I always look to see if I can see him”, he said. “We can even forgive who took him so I can get to see my grandchild, although yes I would say that you can never see him again.” José had been on the verge of going to Barcelona after receiving several false calls from someone who wanted to do nothing more than disturb the family; the cul-
Three Animal Welfare Associations Come Together to Say Thank You to Their Supporters Last Saturday, the 9th March, a huge party was thrown by Associations K9, Cats Welfare and Live Arico P.A.W.S. to say thank you to all their many supporters, helpers and volunteers.
Some 120 plus people packed out the Heritage Bar in Los Cristianos, and enjoyed the free buffet provided by K9 and the entertainment, which consisted of Aidy Evans, Jamie Rourke, Leslie Presley, Alfie B, The Time Lordz and Vicki Denton. Many thanks go to the following who donated fantastic raffle prizes:Keith and Wendi at Revs Motors, The Nautical Centre Puerto Colon, Tracie Morris, One4you, This Way & That, Liana Lovie, Beverley’s Mobile Beauty & Massage, Maxi Fun excursions, Head Quarters, and Joanne Davies. The total raised from the Raffle was 425 Euros but then Keith at Revs Motors donated another 75 Euros to make it up
to 500 Euros. Another 40 Euros came in from auctioning a rather spectacular cake made and donated by Sharon Edens from Shazaroo HomeCrafts, Mikey from K9 did a fun quiz and Elsie ran the tombola. The total raised for the afternoon was 765 Euros, just fantastic. Thanks also to Christine and Joanne who brought some lovely prizes and also some much needed dog and cat food, and to Wendi from Cats Welfare for selling all those raffle tickets. Another bonus was the attendance of Eloy and Fernando of the URA (Animal Rescue Unit), this is a most useful contact for all animal welfare associations to have, and the guys are doing great work here in the South. Check out their website, www.proteanimaloy. org And lastly, thanks to everyone who came and supported the joint event. More can be achieved when several become one and make a bigger voice, and we look forward to more collaborating in the near future.
prit just received a warning from the Civil Guard. The tireless grandfather, who searched every corner of Gran Canaria in the first years of Yeremis disappearance, along with the rest of the family, refuses to throw the towel. “We remain hopeful,” he reiterated. “We once again invite anyone who has reliable information to communicate with us. There is still the possibility of a generous reward for who help them get back Yeremi, thanks to offers made to them by several entrepreneurs in 2012. “The return of Yeremi would be the greatest gift we could receive.” In addition to the Civil Guard, Yeremi’s family is grateful for the help from the Town Hall of Saint Lucia, from local police and Civil protection as well as the delegate of the Government in the Canary Islands. “Thanks to the work of all of them, and the support of friends and family we are still keeping hopeful”, said Ithaisa as she holds Yeremi’s brothers, Aidam aged 7 and Aday aged just 18 months.
Fundraiser
The Living Room is a centre situated in Las Americas on the infamous strip of bars called “Veronicas”. The team aim to show love, support and friendship to the community and use the centre as a way of doing that. Many come to chill out, chat, use the internet, play pool, table tennis, find a job or accommodation information or hang out with friends. Some, however, come out of a real sense of need when their party lifestyle on the island gets to them and, over the last few years, The Living Room staff have come into contact with many from the homeless community. The team works to support these people with their issues and addictions in numerous ways, often referring people who are willing to rehab both on the island and in the UK and have seen many people turn their lives around. It is in relation to this side of the project that The Living
Room is holding a fundraiser event which is being held at the Heritage Bar in Los Cristianos. From 3pm - 8pm you can expect a BBQ, a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses including tickets to the Decades Cabaret Show, 2 free places for the Freebird catamaran excursion, Siam Park tickets, and loads of drinks and meal vouchers, beauty salon gift vouchers etc. etc. There will be also be a Tombola. Entertainment throughout the afternoon has been organised by Derrick Lyons and he will be introducing the talents of Aidy Evans, Storm Duo, Stuart Beagley, Vicky Denton, Gee Whizz, Roxy Rosario, Avril Taylor, Dave Tracey & Stitch and last, but by no means least – The Tenerife Tigers. Readers Letters - Paranormal Post
I just spotted your article in this week’s Tenerife Weekly concerning haunted Tenerife. My wife, Angie
and I are professional paranormal investigators and we live in Tenerife during the winter.
About 3 years ago, together with Peter and Sonia Wing, we formed Tenerife Paranormal Society. We also run Paranormal Troubleshooters International along with a guy called Tim Kelly who also runs Irish Ghosthunters in Ireland. We operate here in Tenerife, in England and in Ireland where we are probably the most well-known. Last Halloween in Ireland for instance, on Halloween night we featured on two TV programmes and three radio programmes, one live, simultaneously. Angie also appeared as a panellist on Ireland’s answer to Loose Women on TV3 that week.
Angie, Tim and I are possibly the most well-known paranormal specialists in the media in Ireland. You can see a little bit about what we do on www.youarewho.com If you want to continue the haunted or paranormal theme in Tenerife Weekly or would like to meet to chat about our experiences here we would be more than happy to be of assistance. We live in Golf del Sur and will be here until 30th April when we return to England for a few months Keith Freeland.

PiNNiNG Gerry Higgins down for an interview at the Claddagh Bar was no easy task. During the day, he’s darting about stocking up the bar with the help of his wife Sandra. He’s also taking deliveries and sorting out the day-to-day duties of a bar owner. The homemade food will be mentioned later but firstly, the interview didn’t go well.
After his initial comment about his mother-in-law standing on the pub table to give a speech after a few sherbets, the best plan of attack was to actually return at 9pm and see him perform on stage. And what a treat it was! Gerry’s banter with the audience, his vocal talents and, wait for it, he’s a multi-instrumentalist supreme. After some mandolin and banjo plucking, the guitars come out followed by penny whistles, the flute and other traditional Irish implements that sound like you’re in a bar in Ireland itself. Gerry encourages all sorts of singers and players on to the stage with him and often has surprise guests from his motherland turning up - some of them famous! Sandra and Gerry have recently celebrated their fifth

anniversary at the Claddagh Bar in San Telmo, Los Cristianos, and are proud to be one of the busiest live-music venues in the area. The bar was designed to be a traditional and authentic Irish bar which could be put anywhere in the world and still make you imagine you could actually be in the Ould Country! The atmosphere and guest appearances make it a venue well worth checking out and, what with the light evenings in Tenerife, watching the sunset over the beach view from the first floor level is stunning. Gerry has a musical past that took him to Germany, Scandinavia, Majorca and the US, where he amassed a selection of musicians who have become frequent visitors to the bar, sometimes by surprise. He also admitted enjoying numerous gigs in England before settling in Tenerife. Our entertainer, who hails
from Galway in the West of Ireland, is rather excited about this Sunday’s St Patrick’s Day. That’s because there will be various musicians on stage non-stop throughout the day and night (from midday) free, exclusive Tshirts are being given away - 200 in all - and there’ll be children’s face-painting, an extra outside bar, green beer and, of course, the traditional Irish menu. When he’s not on stage or delivering speeches from table tops, Gerry is in the kitchen making home-made traditional Irish stew, Irish sausages and mash, cabbage and bacon. He also serves an excellent owncured ham, which is available to satisfy your taste buds in between supping your favourite pint to wash down the terrific Irish ambience. It is truly a venue to experience, and it’s no wonder the place is full of regulars and year after year - happy, smiling visitors.
i was, up until last December a casual smoker, silly i know when you are a singer but i only smoked socially and many often commented that i “wasn’t doing it properly”.
I must admit, since quitting I’m much more aware of the smell of cigarette smoke, but if you’ve ever bought your smokes on the black market, you could be running the risk of smelling of something far worse than cigarette smoke. Fake cigarettes, the ones you buy from a dodgy individual who tells you they “fell off the back of a lorry” may look like the real thing but it’s more than likely that instead of smoking tobacco, you’ll be inhaling rabbit poo - yes, rabbit poo!! The fakes, manufactured in China are packaged to look like famous brands, it’s not until you light up that you notice the difference, one customs official commented; “They stunk. They smell just as you’d imagine burning poo to smell,” Back in November 2009, over 2 million Euros worth were seized by Tenerife cus-
toms officials and 12 smugglers were arrested, but the manufacturers were never caught and with so many travellers entering the archipelago daily, smuggling is potentially happening all the time. “They not only smell bad but the toxic chemicals they
give off are pure poison,” explained a customs official. So, smokers beware!! Make sure you know who and where you are buying your ciggies from- although it may be argued that the poo ones could actually do you less harm.... Or is that just splitting hares?

Spain – The Healthiest Place To Live
The Seville council is promoting equestrian tourism, representatives of a US travel agency, and a prestigious American journalist, both specialists in the sector, have spent several days in the province on a technical inspection visit, consisting of an 8 day route on horseback throughout Andalusia. They were accompanied by a group of clients of the tourism company Equiberia, which organizes horse riding tours on a national level. The high class route, Trails of Andalusia, was designed by Equiberia and has been launched internationally. The Valencia based supermarket chain Mercadona, closed last year with net profits of five hundred and eight million euros, an increase of 7% on the previous year. Their sales also rose by 7%, reaching nineteen thousand and seventy seven million euros, according to the company president Juan Roig. He added that international expansion had been postponed, to concentrate on fresh foods, and on ensuring that the cost of the shopping basket is cheaper, without affecting the quality of the products. Workers at the public street cleaning company Limasa in Malaga have agreed to call an indefinite strike for Monday the 22nd, over salary reductions and changes to the convenio. This is in response to the failure of the company to comply with 90% of the agreements signed a year ago, despite sacrifices made by the staff. According to the strike committee president, Manuel Belmonte, if there is no change, the strike will begin at 6am on the 22nd, and will affect one of the most significant weeks for the city, Easter. The Valencian cyclist, Nacho Olmos, completed his charity project, Un Camino Por La Vida, fighting against cancer last Saturday. He arrived at 6pm at the doors of the Valencia council, accompanied by former professional cyclist Ángel Luis Casero, who was champion of the Tour of Spain in 2001. Olmos covered over three thousand kilometers in just over a month, between Argentina and Spain, as a tribute to his brother who died of cancer, and to raise funds for the Spanish Cancer Association, AECC, for research. The Malaga Provincial Council is working on the Ruta de las Tres Culturas – the route of the three cultures, which consists of 650 kilometers of footpaths, covering where the Christians, Jews and Muslims entered, settled and left the province. The president, Elias Bendodo said that this project will take a three hundred and sixty degree sign posted course. The first work will begin at the Maro cliffs in Nerja, and in the Ronda mountains, and will take around two years to complete, forming another resident and tourist attraction. The recinto ferial in Caravaca de la Cruz in Murcia will be hosting the first Classic Motor Festival from the 29th to the 31st of March. Enthusiasts will be able to see classic cars, motorbikes, and custom vehicles, with their occupants dressed to suit the eras of the cars. Visitors are invited to dress likewise, with prizes for the best. There will also be routes in classic cars, contests, attractions, live music, and opportunities to buy and sell vehicles and spare parts. The exclusivity of the negotiations which the Valencian regional government has held with a Spanish and Libyan group, who made an offer to purchase the Castellón Airport, has ended without a result. The deadline for the presentation of a letter certifying payment by the group passed on Sunday night. Now the regional government can negotiate over any other offer presented for the airport. On the 6th of March, President Alberto Fabra indicated that if payment wasn’t made by the deadline, the airport could be managed by the government.
Spain is the healthiest place to live in the world, according to the medical journal Lancet’s European League Table, which is comprised of data collected over a 20 year period.
The country ranks number one for life expectancy with an average of 81.4 years, which is two years longer than people living in the UK. Spaniards’ years in good health are also higher at 70.9 compared to 68.6 years in Britain. The

Life expectancy
UK is way down the list in 12th place, behind Greece, Ireland and Germany. Professor John Newton, chief knowledge officer of Public Health England, said: “Despite some enviable recent success, for example on smoking, we in the UK need to take a hard look at what can be done to help people in the UK achieve the levels of health already enjoyed by other some countries. Central and local government, charities, employers and retail businesses all have a part to play.” The US isn’t doing too well either, and
is listed at number 17, with on average 67.9 healthy years and a life expectancy of 78.2 years. Lancet has attributed a combination of factors to Spain leading in the results, including eating a healthy Mediterranean diet, a warmer climate and more walking. The fact that Spanish families still care for ailing relatives is probably a major factor, with relatives taking daily meals to those in hospital. They say that premature deaths from falls are also low.
tion and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) – launched the new certificate after finding that some international schools, charities and other agencies overseas lack access to the same level of police checks available to organisations in the UK, sometimes enabling sex offenders to gain positions of trust with children. British Ambassador Giles Paxman attended the NABSS conference where he spoke to representatives of the Spanish authorities and several school delegates. Mr Paxman said: “Schools have a critical role to play in guaranteeing the safety and wellbeing of children. The new International Child Protection Certificate is an effective tool designed to reduce
the chances of sex offenders gaining access to children. I encourage all schools in Spain to include it as part of their staff recruitment.” The ICPC was first unveiled at the British Embassy Madrid at an event attended by Spanish government and law enforcement representatives. Spanish officers specialising in tackling child sexual abuse also shared their expertise and experience of combating this crime with staff from CEOP during a two-day law enforcement workshop at the Spanish Ministry of Interior. Founded in 1978, NABSS is today a large group that defends the interests of British Schools in Spain.

British Embassy Updates Football Website Guidance On Taxation Training Trip
THE British Embassy has updated its guidance on taxation for Britons who are resident in Spain, following the recent royal Decree that reinforces an existing obligation on all residents in Spain – both Spanish and foreign nationalities alike - to file an annual informative declaration of assets held overseas. The Decree allows for tougher penalties for non-compliance.
The guidance can be found on the ‘Finance’ page of the ‘Living in Spain’ section of the British Embassy website at www.ukinspain.fco.gov.uk. The direct link is http://ukinspain.fco.gov.uk/en/helpfor-british-nationals/living-inspain/finance. The updated guidance says: “Britain has a double taxation agreement with Spain to ensure people do not pay tax on the same income in both countries. In accordance with Spanish and international law, all residents in Spain (nation-

als and non-nationals alike) are required to declare assets or groups of assets held outside Spain. Assets may include bank accounts, securities, rights, insurance, annuities, property, etc and the declaration is a separate exercise to the annual tax return. “To reinforce this obligation, and as part of the Spanish Government’s recent antfraud law, the Government on 15 November 2012 passed a Royal Decree that requires all residents in Spain to file an annual informative declaration of assets held overseas
by 31 March each year. Exceptionally for 2012 declarations, the deadline is 30 April 2013. “Severe penalties for incorrect, incomplete or late reporting can be incurred and the legislation also means that criminal charges can be brought in the case of noncompliance. The requirement and potential penalties are in line with standard international tax practice. “Taxation is a complex issue and it is strongly recommended that professional advice is sought. The English
language page of the Spanish Tax Authority website can be found at www.agenciatributaria.gob.es” The updated guidance is intended to remind British residents in Spain of their existing tax obligations. Taxation is a complex issue and the British Embassy and British Consulates are unable to assist with any personal enquiries or provide any further detailed information about taxation in Spain. British residents requiring further help should seek professional tax advice.
Pupils aged 8 and 9 will make the trip to Valencia during the Easter holidays where they will be welcomed as guests of Valencia Football Club. The boys will all be put through a rigorous training programme led by Valencia FC Youth Academy. The two teams, who are now practising hard for the big trip, will also get the chance to play two competi-
tive matches against the local opposition. And players are now looking forward to getting the most of the unique training opportunity. The boys are pictured in their new kit, which has been kindly sponsored by CSW Technical Services. Mrs Povey from CSW was present at the unveiling of the kit, which gave the boys a perfect opportunity to say thank you.

Allergy Alert
eople who live in Spain and suffer from allergies may be in for a difficult time this spring and it is all down to the wet weather the region has suffered. The number of pollen grains in the atmosphere is expected to double last year’s levels, according to findings published by the Spanish Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (SEAIC).
The SEAIC warned that if it is warm and dry in May, it “could be the worst scenario for those who suffer allergies,” whereas if it is damp, there will be less pollen. That
is because the wet weather encourages the growth of flowering plants which release pollen into the atmosphere. Warm weather in May will help these plants proliferate, while wet weather in May would slow their growth. The SEAIC has predicted that there will be around 5,100 grains of pollen per cubic meter in the spring season in contrast to 2,700 grains in 2012. Around 4 million Spaniards suffer from pollen allergies, the majority of them living in the central and southern areas of the country, where large number of olive trees come into flower in spring, raising the amount of pollen in the air. However, questions such as atmospheric contamination in Spain’s largest
cities are also to blame given that it allows the pollen to reach the immune system more easily. Spaniards can easily see pollen levels on the website
Raising The Speed Limit In Spain?
The Spanish General Direction of Traffic has suggested increasing speed limits from 120 km to 130 km an hour on certain sections of motorways. The proposal, which comes on the back of various other suggestions which have been made by Spain’s Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz, is included in proposals to modify the country’s General Rules of Circulation.
The increased maximum speed, according to the proposal, would be implemented in those sections of road “where there are clear indices of security, good road surfaces and optimum meteorological and atmospheric conditions.” The number of road fatalities has decreased in recent years. A total of 1,304 people lost their lives on Spanish roads in 2012, 108 fewer than in 2011. However, the data fails to persuade experts on speed lift. The Association of the Prevention of Traffic Accidents (PAT) noted, “The scientific community has demonstrated that a 1% rise in

The whale, which came ashore last year on a beach in Andalusia, had over 17 kilogrammes (37 pounds) of rubbish blocking its stomach, including some 30 square metres of plastic canvas, said Renaud de Stephanis, a marine biologist at the Donana Biological Station, which is run by the Spanish National Research Council. “We quickly realised that it had a real greenhouse inside its stomach. We did not expect it, but it did not surprise us. There were a dozen metres of plastic rope, plastic sheeting used on the outside of greenhouses, and plastic sheeting used inside and even two flower pots.” Over 250 marine animals including turtles, dolphins and otters, have problems because of plas-
tic that finds its way into the ocean and which can cause them to choke, de Stephanis said. Sperm whales, which can be found throughout the Mediterranean Sea, typically feed on squid. The whale that washed ashore in March 2012 on a beach south of Granada, not far from Almeria, was “in a state of advanced emaciation”, said de Stephanis. “It was as if it had a rock inside its intestine, nothing could get through. There was so much plastic that it finally exploded,” he added. Very few large mammals, including only four sperm whales, have been proven to have died because they swallowed plastic waste, de Stephanis said. The discovery is worrying because it shows that “the sea is full of rubbish” and that waste management systems for plastic, not only in Spain, are not always effective, he said. “These big plastics crumble and the little pieces also go inside fish. And that is what we end up eating,” said de Stephanis.

Iberia Back On Track? Ninth Anniversary
iT seems that the trials of passengers on iberia may soon be over. international Airlines Group, iAG, the owner of British Airways and iberia, has accepted the mediator’s proposal to sack 3,141 iberia staff instead of 3,807. Staff working at Europe’s third-biggest airline, have staged eight days of strikes in the past two months.
Protesters have waved Spanish flags outside IAG offices in Madrid with signs such as “Get your dirty hands off Iberia” and “British go home.” “The board of IAG met today in an extraordinary session to analyse and assess the proposal issued by a mediator regarding Iberia,” the airlines group said on Monday night. “As a result, the board has decided to accept the proposal.” However, the unions, in-
cluding the powerful Spanish pilots’ union Sepla, have not yet indicated whether they accept the deal. Union leaders previously rejected an IAG offer to trim its initial plan for firing staff. However, the latest negotiations would also see Iberia reduce its 20 per cent salary cuts for the airline’s remaining 16,000 workers to 15 per cent reductions in salaries. Spanish politicians have been extremely critical
of IAG’s moves, with the industry minister, Jose Manuel Soria, saying last week, “We want to call attention to what is going on. From the moment there was a merger between British Airways and Iberia the number of routes for BA has increased and the number for Iberia has fallen. Earnings for BA have risen, and fallen for Iberia. It gives the impression that there has not really been a merger at all.”

AST Monday, the 11th of March, was the 9th anniversary of the Monday marked the ninth anniversary of the terrorist attacks that killed 191 people and wounded more than 1,500 others. Four Madrid commuter trains were torn apart on
March 11, 2004, during the morning rush hour when backpack bombs placed aboard the trains were detonated by remote control by Islamic terrorists Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, marked the occasion by vowing to “eradicate terrorism.” “Nine years ago, Spain suffered the worst terrorist attack in its history on a day like this,” Rajoy said.
“Freedom, democracy and life itself have ferocious enemies, but they will never be able to defeat us,” the prime minister said. Madrid regional government chief Ignacio Gonzalez and Madrid Mayor Ana Botella, meanwhile, placed a wreath at the Puerta del Sol, where a plaque honours the victims of the attacks.
www.tenerife-weekly.com Authorities in Andalucia have ordered the disconnection of electricity and water to 19 homes occupied by elderly British expats, even though that same authority has already agreed that the properties can be made legal.
Each couple spent between 160,000 and 265,000 Euros on a retirement home in the area of El Fas in the small town of Cantoria, Almeria only to discover that the Dutch promoter had constructed the properties without planning permission, in full view of the town hall. The builder, Southern Spain Consultants C.B., was convicted of planning crimes in 2011 in a judgement that acknowledged that the homeowner’s, who had assisted in the prosecution, had acted in good faith. The promoters received a minimum sentence but the beleaguered homeowners were not compensated. In 2012 the regional gov-

legal, a process which can take years. Facing the prospect of more legal bills and a life dependent on an electricity generator, many of the homeowners have given up the fight and abandoned their homes altogether. To add insult to injury, the only property on the estate of 19 houses that continues to enjoy public services is the one owned and occupied by the builder. Maura Hillen from AUAN, an organisation that campaigns on behalf of homeowners affected by the problem of illegal houses in Spain, said “These people have invested more than 3 million Euros in Spain and in return they are being treated disgracefully by a system that simply does not function to protect homeowners. And I am sorry to say that this is not an isolated case. Many thousands of illegal homeowners live in fear of disconnection and the regional government’s latest legal ‘solutions’ have simply served to make matters worse”.
Stay Safe – Recall Queen Cancels Public Engagements Items Alert
The Electrical Safety Council (ESC) says one person is killed every seven days by an electrical accident and 350,000 people are injured every year, partly because of a “shockingly low” response to product alerts. Mil-
There have been 266 product recalls over the last six years and with manufacturers making hundreds of thousands of items, it is thought millions of dangerous items stay in people’s homes. Research by the ESC shows almost two million adults have knowingly ignored a recall notice and a further one million admit owning an electrical item that has been

The researchers also found many consumers would jeopardise their safety if sending back a recalled product was too inconvenient or meant going without a luxury item such as a television or hair straighteners. The ESC is launching an online tool, at www.esc.org.uk/ recall that will allow users to quickly and easily discover if they own an electrical product that has been recalled.
The charity’s Emma Apter said: “The small inconvenience of returning a recalled item is worth it when you consider that faulty products can electrocute or cause a fire. We firmly believe that there is more that retailers and manufacturers can do to help ensure customers are aware when a product has been recalled, and what to do if they need to return an item.”

uckingham Palace has announced that the Queen has cancelled the rest of her public engagements for the past week as she recovers from illness. She will, however, continue to carry out her official duties inside the palace, the official statement said.
Her scheduled visit to London’s Tech City on Wednesday and attendance at a chapel service on Thursday were called off; other members of the Royal Family took her place. The Palace statement issued on Tuesday read: “The Queen continues to make a good recovery following her recent illness, and today she presented the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry and held a series of audiences. However, regrettably, she will no longer attend the Tech City engagement planned for tomorrow, or the Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Scriptures Association Service at the Guards Chapel on Thursday. The Duke of York will represent The Queen at the Tech City visit, and The Duke of Edinburgh will attend the Guards Chapel Service as planned. “Her Majesty will, how-
ever, continue with the usual rhythm of business at Buckingham Palace, including holding a Privy Council meeting tomorrow. The Queen hopes to resume her programme of official engagements next week.” Doubt was cast over the Queen’s trip to the East End where the Tech City firms are based after she was forced to cancel an appearance at a major Commonwealth ser-
vice on Monday - for the first time in 20 years. Buckingham Palace gave some details about the Queen’s health when a spokeswoman said: “This time last week she was in hospital but she’s in great spirits and apart from this is in good health and will be going to the reception in the evening. It’s just the tail end of the symptoms, her condition has not worsened at all.”

Falkland Islanders – Proud To Be British
“The Falkland Islands may be thousands of miles away but they are British through and through. That is how they want to stay. They want to remain British and that view should be respected by everybody, including by Argentina.” David Cameron announced after the referendum in the Islands saw an overwhelming majority back staying under British rule.
Just three people voted ‘No’ in the ballot about remaining a British Overseas Territory, with 99.8% supporting the status quo. As a result David Cameron has demanded that Argentina respect the result of a referendum. He warned that Argentina should take “careful note” of the result, which he said was the clearest possible message International observers ratified the poll, in which 92% of eligible voters - or 1,513 people - took part, as “free and fair” The official counting took place in Stanley Town Hall, and it quickly became clear the piles of “Yes” votes were growing steadily, while “No” votes were nowhere to be seen. There was a delay in announcing the result because one vote went missing during the count but officials eventually decided it was not worth a recount for a single missing ballot. Governor of the Falkland Islands, Nigel Haywood, said: “You don’t get a much clearer expression of the people’s self-determination than such a large turn out and such a
large yes vote.” Argentina has yet to officially react to the referendum but had already dismissed the vote as illegal and “pointless”. It claims the people have no voice in deciding what is a dispute about sovereignty that should be resolved directly with Britain. But delighted residents, who sang Land Of Hope And Glory and Rule Britannia after the result, in-
sisted they must be heard. One woman celebrating in Stanley said: “It sends such a strong message to the world that we’ve been here for a long time. We have the right to determine our own future. How long do you have to live in a country before you’re allowed to call it your own?” The referendum was organised after deterioration in relations between Britain and Argentina,
which lays claim to the Falklands and in 1982 invaded the islands it calls Las Malvinas. During the war to take back the islands, 255 British serviceman died as well as 655 Argentinians and three locals. Relations appeared to warm for a period until Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner restated her country’s claims of sovereignty and tried to raise the issue with David Cameron and the
UN. Although Buenos Aires dismissed the referendum as illegitimate and refused to talk to Falkland politicians, it is hoped that other countries in South and Central America will be more sympathetic. The result means the Falklands will continue to run its own affairs, but under the protection of Britain when it comes to defence and foreign policy.
Smashin’ Mandela “Doing Well” Dunkin’ Donut
Customers were forced to scatter when an elderly driver drove her car through the front window of a Dunkin’ Donuts shop. Police believe Barbara Makous’ vehicle was in the wrong gear and she panicked when she hit the accelerator pedal, sending her car over a kerb and into the store.
Former South African president Nelson Mandela is doing well after spending a night in hospital over the weekend, a friend has revealed. Mr Mandela was admitted to hospital last Saturday for “a scheduled medical check-up to manage the existing conditions in line with his age”. It came less than three months after he was treated for a lung infection and gallstones. But lawyer George Bizos, who defended Mr Mandela
CCTV footage showed tables and chairs sent flying, at least one customer diving for cover and a mother and young child running for their lives as the vehicle smashed through a window and skidded through the shop before coming to rest in the front section of the shop. Incredibly no-one was seriously injured and police called to the Ivybridge shopping centre in Roxborough, Philadelphia, decided not to charge the driver. One eye-witness said: “That’s scary, the car must have been right here - it could have hit people just walking by.” Within a few hours, workers had boarded up the badly damaged shop front.

Mr Bizos, who has been friends with Mr Mandela since the 1940s, visited the Nobel Peace Prize winner at his Johannesburg home just over a week ago: “I saw him about 10 days ago. He looked OK. Unfortunately he sometimes forgets that one or two of them had passed on and has a blank face when you tell him that Walter Sisulu and some others are no longer with us.” Mr Sisulu, the former leader
Facebook: Children For Sale
A mother is accused of trying to sell her children on Facebook in order to raise funds to bail her boyfriend out of jail. Police in Sallisaw, Oklahoma said Misty VanHorn contacted a potential buyer via the social networking site.
According to reports, 22-year-old mother was looking to get $1,000 (£670) for her two-year-old or $4,000 (£2,680) for the toddler and her 10-month-old baby. “Just come to Sallisaw, it’s only 30 minutes away and I’ll give you all of her stuff and let y’all have

Police arrested her shortly after. Neighbours said VanHorn had been going door to door trying to raise the $1,000 bond money to free her partner for days. Pope Francis The Humble Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio has been elected as the new Pope. POPE FRANCIS PROFILE:
Francis is the first ever pope from the Americas, an austere Jesuit intellectual who modernised Argentina’s conservative roman Catholic Church. Known until Wednesday as Jorge Bergoglio, Pope Francis is respected as a humble man who denied himself the luxuries that previous Buenos Aires cardinals enjoyed.
T
HE 76-year-old, who will be known as Pope Francis, appeared on the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica, on Wednesday night, to cheers from tens of thousands of the faithful gathered below.
Addressing the crowds, the first non-European pontiff for more than 1,000 years said: “As you know, the duty of the conclave was to appoint a bishop of Rome. It seems to me that my brother cardinals have chosen one who is from far away, but here I am. I would like to thank you for your embrace, also to ... the bishops, thank you
very much. The world should set off on a path of love and fraternity.” He also conducted a prayer for ‘pope emeritus’ - former pontiff Benedict XVI - who he is thought to have been runner-up to at the last conclave in 2005. But his address featured a break with tradition, when he asked those
In the past, the 76-year-old pontiff often took the bus to work, cooked his own meals and regularly visited the slums around Argentina’s capital. His legacy as a cardinal includes his efforts to repair the reputation of a church that lost many followers by failing to openly challenge Argentina’s murderous 1976-83 dictatorship. He also worked to recover the church’s traditional political influence in society, but his outspoken criticism of President Cristina Kirchner could not stop her from imposing socially liberal measures, from gay marriage and adoption to free contraceptives. He came close to becoming pope in 2005, reportedly gaining the second-highest total in several rounds of voting before bowing out in the conclave that elected Pope Benedict XVI. He initially trained as a chemist, Bergoglio taught literature, psychology, philosophy and theology before taking over as Buenos Aires archbishop in 1998. He became cardinal in 2001, when the economy was collapsing, and won respect for blaming unrestrained capitalism for impoverishing millions of Argentines. Bergoglio has stood out for his austerity. Even after he became Argentina’s top church official in 2001, he never lived in the ornate church mansion where Pope John Paul II stayed when visiting the country.

present to pray for him before he blessed the crowd. Pope Francis, the first Jesuit to hold the post, went on to deliver a blessing to “all men and women of good will”, before calling for “brotherhood” in the Church. Francis is certain to bring the church closer to the poverty-wracked region, while also introducing the world to a very different type of pope, whose first words to the faithful were a simple, “Brothers and sisters, good evening”. White smoke rising from the conclave at the Vatican signalled a decision had been reached on the new head of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics. His appearance came after French Car-

dinal Jean-Louis Tauran, the protodeacon, announced “Habemus Papam” - “We have a pope” - and gave the name of the new pontiff in Latin. A huge roar came from the huge crowds gathered outside the Vatican in St Peter’s Square as the white smoke indicated the new pontiff had obtained the required two-thirds majority in the fifth round of voting by 115 cardinals over two days. The quick election was a surprise as no clear front-runner had been indicated prior to the vote. The Pope’s Twitter account, whose profile was changed to read ‘Sede Vacante’ when Benedict stepped down, has now been switched back to ‘Pontifex’. Minutes after his address, a message was sent from the account, saying: “HABEMUS PAPAM FRANCISCUM” - which rough-
The cardinals in charge of choosing the next Pope adhered to a strict timetable during voting. They moved into their quarters in the Vatican at 6am on Tuesday morning, spokesman Rev Federico Lombardi revealed. They drew lots for their rooms in the Santa Martha residential building not far from St Peter’s.
At 9am they filed into the Basilica to celebrate Mass. That afternoon they gathered in the Apostolic Palace and at 3.30pm they filed, in order of seniority, into the Sistine Chapel for the start of the conclave. As the doors closed on the chapel for the secret ballot, the last words the world heard were “extra omnes” Latin for “everybody out”. Breakfast is served each morning be-
tween 5.30 and 6.30am before the cardinals either walk or are taken by mini-bus to the Sistine Chapel for Mass and the start of fresh deliberations. Two votes are held in the morning and two in the afternoon. If there is no majority decision, black smoke will rise from the Vatican chimney as the secret ballots are burnt. If this happens, black smoke would be visible around 11am and 6pm each day at the conclusion of each of the voting sessions. When the cardinals agree on a successor to Pope Benedict XVI, chemicals will be added to the ballots as they are burnt and the smoke will be white. The bells of St Peter’s ring out signalling a Pope has been chosen and within the hour he steps out onto the balcony of the Basilica to reveal himself to the world.
ly translates as “We have Pope Francis.” The mild and media shy new pope is expected to speak to the media for the first time on Saturday. He will also meet with world leaders who are due to descend on Rome on Tuesday for his inauguration mass - preparations for which are already well under way. Known for his humility and simplicity, his decision to slip out of the Vatican earlier was seen as another example of his modesty. Francis shunned the papal limousine for a shuttle bus with other cardinals to go back to a residence inside the Vatican for a meal after his announcement. That showed his humble side, according to prominent US cardinal Timothy Dolan, who also revealed that the new pontiff told the cardinals he would be visiting Benedict. Speaking at the North American College, the
US seminary in Rome said Francis was expected to arrive in the limousine. “And as the last bus pulls up, guess who gets off? It’s Pope Francis. I guess he told the driver, ‘that’s ok, I’ll just go with the boys’.” During the dinner, Cardinal Dolan said the new pope also showed his humorous side. As Francis toasted the cardinals, he said to them: “May God forgive you.” It brought the house down, said Cardinal Dolan. Known until Wednesday as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the Argentine Pope Francis became a cardinal in 2001. He has spent nearly his entire career in Argentina, and becomes the first ever pope from Latin America. His election has pleased Latin Americans, who number 40% of the world’s Catholics but have long been underrepresented in the church leadership.
Techno Cardinals
Cardinals taking part in secret discussions ahead of the Conclave to elect a new Pope used a remote control with buttons in Latin. The state-of-the-art devices were given to the “Princes of the Church” as the College of Cardinals held their daily meetings at the Nervi hall in the Vatican.
The device was used by the cardinals as they voted on a series of themes and topics that came up for discussion ahead of the start of the Conclave in the Sistine Chapel. The electronic devices have a small display with a Vatican stem showing the “sede vacante” or empty see, which denotes the fact that no Pope is in office since former Pontiff Benedict XVI stepped down last month. Below the screen are two buttons - one coloured green with the word “confirmo” for send and one in red with “deleo” for delete. There are four grey buttons with the words “placet” (agree), “non placet” (don’t agree), “abstineo” (abstain) and “luxta modum” - agree in principle. During voting and meetings, the wifi system in the nearby press centre is switched off and a jamming device also prevents the use of mobile telephones to ensure that cardinals have no contact with the outside
world. The same principle is used for the Conclave, with a jamming system being placed to prevent cardinals receiving and giving information on the secret ballot. The voting procedure inside the Sistine Chapel follows a more traditional method, with the 115 elector cardinals, those under 80 years old, writing their nominations on a ballot paper in Latin. It says “Eligo in Summum Pontificem” (I elect to the Pontifical See) and then their chosen cardinal’s name. This is then put in an urn and the names are counted by scrutinisers with a hole being pushed through each paper with a needle and thread. These are then collected and burned in a stove inside the Sistine Chapel with chemicals being added which turn the resulting smoke white to signify a new Pope has been chosen or black to say there is still no decision. Latin is the official language of the Vatican and numerous signs and documents are in the ancient language, there is even a cashpoint machine just inside the walls by the Sant’Anna gate Recently, the Vatican has been stepping up its use of social networks with a Papal Twitter account, Facebook site and YouTube page, plus all announcements from the Vatican are uploaded into its press office site and Twitter account.

Bamboo Towels THE TWEETING Astronaut CANADA’S Space Agency said the appointment of veteran astronaut Chris Hadfield as international Space Station commander is “a historic milestone”. The 53-year-old, a veteran of two space shuttle missions, has become the first Canadian to assume command of the iSS.
THEY are brand new to Tenerife; in fact, they are brand new to anywhere! You may not have heard of Bamboo towels before, but they are here and they are fabulous.
Take an opportunity to discover the benefits of having bamboo bath towels. Picture yourself getting out of the bath or shower and wrapping yourself in pure heaven, in possibly the softest bath towel ever. Bamboo towels allow you to dry yourself off quickly due to their premium absorbent properties while also giving you the luxurious feeling of the softest fabric you have ever felt against your body. Pure cotton can often feel a bit rough to the touch; not only will you find that the towels are exceptionally soft and absorbent, but you will also find that they are durable for everyday use. They are also perfect for people who want to maintain a hygienic environment, because they are naturally odour resistant due to the fibres fastdrying characteristics. So say goodbye to that disgusting mildew smell you get from other towels from time to
time, and bathe in serenity. Bamboo fabric is created from the bamboo pulp and is 100% biodegradable. It is also anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic; bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial and resists mould, mildew, fungi and dust mites. These properties remain intact, making it suitable for those with eczema, hyper-sensitive skin or hay fever caused by dust mite. Even better news is that bamboo fabric require less frequent washing, it needs no more than a 30˚C wash
and dries in half the time of cotton. Tumble dry low and remove from dryer as soon as it stops to avoid unnecessary creasing. The only place that actually stocks these delicious items is Antiquities Tenerife in Las Chafiras. The have stock in three different colours, soft brown, grey and aubergine and at the moment they have an offer for one bath towel and a hand towel for just 15,00 Euros. Pop in and see them and feel the difference for yourself.
Commander Hadfield blasted into space on December 19, 2012 in a Soyuz spacecraft from Baikonur, Kazakhstan and arrived at the ISS on December 21. He told his 500,000 followers on Twitter that outgoing Expedition 34 commander Kevin Ford of Nasa had handed him the “keys” to the station. Since his arrival, he has provided his Twitter followers and 70,000 friends on Facebook with spectacular views of Earth. From playing guitar to showing how astronauts get their hair cut, Cmdr Hadfield has given those on Earth a rare glimpse into the everyday lives of those living and working on the ISS through social media. He said: “I stand on the shoulders of so many that have made this possible and now take my turn to try and add to that solid foundation
White Cliffs of Dover
for the Canadians that follow. It is a tremendous honour to assume command of the ISS. I will do my best to acquit myself well, accomplish the utmost as a crew for all the international partners, and fully live and share the experience on behalf of so many around our world.” Cmdr Hadfield will oversee
the station’s operations, including more than 100 scientific experiments, and will be responsible for the safety of the crew and the station. The International Space Station orbits the Earth from a distance of 217 miles (350km), circling the planet every 90 minutes at a speed of 17,398mph.
www.tenerife-weekly.com SAS sniper Sergeant Danny Nightingale has won an appeal against his conviction for illegally possessing a pistol and ammunition. His barrister told three appeal judges that the soldier was put under “improper pressure” to plead guilty. The judges agreed, quashed the convictions and ordered a retrial.
Speaking outside court, Sergeant Nightingale said: “I’m absolutely elated. Again, thanking everyone massively for this. I do believe it was the right decision today. It is slightly tainted with the fact the retrial will be coming upon us, as it stands, tonight will be a happy night. We now have a re-trial to face. We will attack it with the same vigour and tenacity as we’ve done this.” He said any decision on whether he returned to duty pending the retrial would be decided by the Ministry of Defence. William Clegg QC said his client had been told by a barrister representing him at the military trial that he would serve a five-year jail term if found guilty but might escape a prison sentence if he pleaded guilty. In written arguments presented to the three appeal judges, Mr Clegg said that “undue pressure” had been placed on Sgt Nightingale by barrister Ian Winter QC. But when outlining arguments orally, Mr Clegg said the “wrong” occurred when the trial judge - Assistant Judge Advocate General Alastair McGrigor - “entered the arena”. Mr Clegg told the appeal court today: “What he (Mr Winter) was forced to say is ‘This is what the judge is saying is going to happen’. This is where the improper pressure came from.” The barrister said, in written arguments given to judges, that the “pressure” placed on Sgt Nightingale rendered his conviction “unsafe” and his guilty plea a “nullity”.

Retrial Called For Convicted SAS Sniper
Sgt Nightingale, 38, who served 11 years in the Special Forces and fought in both Iraq and Afghanistan, was sentenced to 18 months in military custody after pleading guilty to illegally keeping a pistol. He had been given the weapon as a present by Iraqi forces he had been training, but had no recollection of owning it after suffering a brain injury. His sentence was cut to 12 months and suspended by the appeal court last November after a campaign by his wife Sally gathered huge public support for a man described by the appeal court judge as an “exemplary
soldier”. Since his release the highly trained soldier has been at home in Cheshire, unable to re-join his regiment whilst waiting for the outcome of his appeal. “It’s very frustrating wanting to do something (but having) no routine,” he said before the hearing. “And yes, being paid to do not what I’m supposed to do. You’re trained up to do stuff, and you want to do stuff. You can’t stand the futility of not doing it. To be told ‘that’s it, go and do nothing, you can’t do anything’. That’s hard.” The situation has meant he has
spent a lot of time with his two young daughters, Mara, five, and Alys, two. “I’ve probably had more time with my family in the last 18 months than regiment (SAS) guys will have in seven years.” He is desperate to get back to work and said: “I still love it. It was the proudest day of my life when I passed (the notoriously tough SAS selection course).” Mrs Nightingale is more circumspect about the possibility of her husband re-joining the SAS as a frontline soldier after his brain injury, which she believes still affects
him. She feels her husband has been made a scapegoat by the Army and wants to know why, but acknowledges she will probably never get the answers to her questions. If he does return to work then it will be more upheaval for his young girls according to Sally “They’ve got to get used to that again because they have had dad to take them to school, to pick them up from school, do clubs with them, take them swimming. You know, he does all those extra bits while I’m working and doing other things. So they’ve had a really good time with dad.”
5 Organ Transplant Patient Couple Robs Bank With Kids Becomes A Mum A husband and wife bank robbery team have been arrested in Utah after they took their two children, aged just 5 and 2 with them on the robbery. Police records state the man and woman, both 27, were arrested during a traffic stop on Monday soon after a Wells Fargo bank branch was robbed.
Fatema Al Ansari was given a new liver, pancreas, stomach and small and large intestine at a Miami hospital in 2007 and she has now given birth to a daughter. The 26-year-old, whose baby daughter was delivered by Caesarean section on February 26, says she is overjoyed. She showed off her baby at a news conference at Jackson Memorial, the same hospital that treated her after she was diagnosed with a blood clot in a major vein to the intestine. “It’s a hard feeling to express,” the new mother said, as she cradled Alkadi Alhayal, who weighed 4lbs 7oz when she was born. “It’s the best feeling in the world!” Out of about 600 five-organ transplants recorded since 2011, she is the first such patient in the world to give birth. Dr Shalih Yasin said there have been some cases in Europe involving women who had two new organs “but not five”. “We have searched all medical literature for any pregnancy that had five multi-transplants and this is the first case to our knowledge,”
said the doctor. Mrs Al Ansari was forced to terminate early a previous pregnancy after her diagnosis, which made her think she would never be able to get pregnant. The couple eventually became parents through in vitro fertilisation. “We wanted to say that this was a very hard decision,” said the new father. “But we wanted to give hope to other
people who have transplants and give them a chance, too.” Fatema and her husband, Khalifa Alhayal, live in Qatar and plan to return home shortly. There could be more good news for the couple in the future. Their doctors say the young mother is healthy enough to try for a second baby.
The married couple told police they robbed the bank because they faced eviction and needed to pay medical bills. Bank employees told police the woman entered the bank and showed the teller a note demanding money. After a bank teller gave her
$956 (£640), the woman reportedly ran to the car, which the man drove away. Police said they searched the couple’s vehicle and found the robbery note along with hundreds of dollars in cash. It is unclear what happened to the children after their parents’ arrest.

BIONIC EYE GIVES Mr Stubby’s New Tail SIGHT TO THE BLIND
AN alligator that had his tail bitten off by another alligator 8 years ago has been given a new prosthetic one by his keepers in Arizona. Seven-foot long Mr Stubbs was one of 32 alligators confiscated from the back of a truck pulled over near Casa Grande in 2005.
A BiONiC eye is giving sight back to blind people, enabling them to read letters and simple words. The implant converts images from an external camera into electronic signals that the brain can “see”. Tests on 21 patients with retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative disease that destroys light-receiving cells at the back of the eye, showed that three quarters of patients were able to identify single letters. More than half were able to read four-letter words, according to results published
in the British Journal of Ophthalmology. Before being fitted with the device Richard Barrett had vague light perception in one eye. Now he can see objects and find his way around. He said: “When I am indoors I can see where windows are. To go to a door you can scan and pick up where the door frame is. If you have a path and grass down one side, you can pick up the edge of the path. That’s where the device comes into its own.” Lyndon da Cruz, consultant retinal surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, said the Argus II device could “restore some meaningful vision
in patients that otherwise would have been left blind”. At the best end of it they can start to read small 5cm letters formed into words. This was a huge change in perception of what we thought this device could do.” The Argus II is currently the only approved retinal prosthesis. A camera mounted on a pair of glasses feeds pictures along a cable to an electronic chip resting against the retina inside the eye. The chip stimulates the optic nerve, which carries signals to the visual processing centre of the brain, giving the wearer a highly pixellated black and white view of the world.
Mr Stubbs was taken to the Phoenix Herpetological Society and now proudly sports a 3ft-long prosthetic attachment. It has been made from silicone rubber by a team from the CORE Institute in Phoenix, which usually specialises in orthopaedic care for humans. It had to be buoyant and also flexible, to allow Mr Stubbs to wiggle it and help him move through the water. “It was just a process of figuring out how make a mould and then getting a mould and then playing with
the material,” said Sarah Jarvis from CORE. “I made some little models and figured out that it would be pretty good for the full tail,” she added. It is expected that it will take months before Mr Stubbs learns how to properly use the tail. But for now, his handlers are happy with smaller milestones, such as not trying to bite off the new attachment. They might also need to come up with a new nickname.

Lion Kills “Absolutely Fearless” Volunteer
A volunteer worker was killed by a lion after it managed to open a cage door with its paw and entered an area she was cleaning, a coroner has said. She was attacked inside an enclosure at Cat Haven in Dunlap by an African lion which had been raised at the park since it was a cub.
Dianna Hanson’s neck was broken almost instantly when the 550lb (250kg) lion swiped her with his paw at a big cat sanctuary in California, said Fresno County Coroner David Hadden. “The lion had been fed, the
young woman was cleaning the large enclosure, and the lion was in the small cage. The gate of the cage was partially open, which allowed the lion to lift it up with his paw,” Mr Hadden said. “He ran at the young lady.” She had been talking to a colleague on the phone just before she was killed. The coworker became concerned when the conversation ended abruptly. Another park worker tried unsuccessfully to lure the lion into a separate pen. The animal was later shot dead. Mr Hadden said bite and claw marks found on the 26-year-old’s body were inflicted by the four-year-old male named Cous Cous after
she was already dead. Ms Hanson’s father Paul, a Seattle-area lawyer, said his daughter was “very excited” to be working there. “It was just a dream job for her. She was absolutely fearless,” he said. He added that his daughter had been fascinated by big cats from a young age. “She was disappointed because she said they wouldn’t let her into the cages with the lion and tiger there.” Dale Anderson, who has run the sanctuary since 1993, was in tears as he read

a short statement about the intern’s death, extending his thoughts and prayers to the victim’s family and friends. Actress Tippi Hedren, who founded the Shambala Preserve in California for seized or abandoned exotic pets, expressed dismay over the killing of the lion. “It wasn’t the lion’s fault. It’s the human’s fault always,” she said. Cat Haven, about 45 miles east of Fresno in the Sierra Nevada foothills, is a private sanctuary with two lions. The park, home to about two doz-

en animals and has previously housed tigers, leopards and jaguars has a good safety record. An inspection by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife in January 2011 found the sanctuary was in “good condition”. The owner of the zoo said safety protocols were in place but he would not discuss them because they are a part of the law enforcement investigation. Mr Anderson said that he is the only person allowed in
the enclosure when lions are present. “We want to assure the community that we have followed all safety protocols,” he said. “We have been incident-free since 1998 when we opened.” Last year, another sanctuary, Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida, said that at least 21 people, including five children, have been killed and 246 mauled by exotic cats in the US since 1990. Over the same period, 254 cats had escaped and 143 were killed.

He joined BBC Sport in 1972, replacing David Coleman as the presenter of the midweek sports programme Sportsnight. He later went on to work on Match Of The Day - both as commentator and front man - and to introduce Grandstand as a stand-in for Frank Bough. As well as football, Gubba commentated on hockey, table-tennis, golf, tennis, bobsleigh, ski-jumping, darts and
ice-skating. He covered every Olympic Games, both summer and winter, from 1972 to 2012 and every World Cup from 1974 to 2006. Match Of The Day host Gary Lineker wrote on Twitter: “Deeply saddened to hear that Tony Gubba has passed away. One of the great voices of football who graced Match Of The Day for so many years.” He leaves his partner of 15 years, Jenny, his two daughters, Claire, 40 and Libby, 38 and three granddaughters.

Sports presenter Tony Gubba, famous for his Dancing on Ice commentating since its launch in 2006, has died following a short illness. He was 69.
The French “SpiderMan” well-known for climbing some of the world’s tallest and most iconic landmarks has set his sights on London’s Shard - the highest building in the European Union.
Alain Robert has said that he was trying to get permission to scale the 1,016ft tower, which opened earlier this year, and was hoping to “meet the guy in two days”. In December last year, the Shard’s owners were granted a High Court injunction stopping him going up amid health and safety fears.
Mr Robert, who has previously scaled landmarks including the Eiffel Tower and New York’s Empire State Building, had visited the Shard to assess its potential for a future ascent. He was recognised by security personnel, and reportedly told them he would not be climbing the building at that time. London Bridge Quarter (LBQ), the Shard’s owners and developers, said: “The injunction prohibits Mr Robert from entering the Shard site or attempting to climb the building. Mr Robert has been witnessed in the vicinity of the Shard and as LBQ Ltd takes its responsibility to health and safety extremely
seriously we have sought to prevent Mr Robert from attempting to climb the Shard - in the interest of his own safety and that of the general public.” He has been arrested several times in the past after climbing buildings without prior approval but he said these days nearly 70% of his attempts are “completely official”. “Sometimes people think I’m a criminal and that it’s impossible to do something official with me but it’s totally wrong.” He has admitted he still suffers from vertigo, adding: “There’s nearly nothing you can do except live with it and handle it as much as you can.”
Presenter Philip Schofield said his colleagues on the show would miss him “terribly”. “We were all aware how poorly he was but this is very sudden and is dreadful for everyone who knew and loved him,” he said. “A genuinely delightful, kind, dedicated and talented man.” Schofield, who said he was speaking with the “saddest of hearts”, went on: “All my love and condolences to his family. I’m so glad I had the privilege of working with him and getting to know him. All of us at Dancing On Ice will miss him terribly.” Katie Rawcliffe, the executive producer of Dancing on Ice, said: “Tony has been a huge part of Dancing On Ice and its success over the last eight years. He brought his expertise, his warmth, and much humour to our screens. He was very much part of the team and a pleasure to work with. He will be sorely missed and our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”

According to a police report, a yoga instructor had to stop a screaming Capriati from hitting Mr Brannan, who fled to the changing room, locked himself in and called 911. Mr Brannan, 28, a former Florida State University golfer, had red marks on his chest from the incident, the police report said. It added that while filling out an affidavit, “his hands were physically shaking ... it was very apparent that he was in fear of physical harm”. Mr Brannan, who dated 36-year-old Capriati from May 2011 to February 2012, told police that she began
harassing and stalking him shortly after they broke up. He also showed officers documentation of seven other altercations with the former tennis star, who won 14 titles and a gold medal at the 1992 Olympics. The North Palm Beach Police Department in Florida subsequently requested an arrest warrant for Capriati, though it has not yet been issued by the court. A publicist for Capriati issued a statement on Friday stressing that the case “has not yet been assigned in Palm
Beach County and has not been reviewed. The current facts being circulated by Mr Brannan are an over-exaggeration and the police report is one-sided in Mr Brannan’s favour since they failed to get Ms Capriati’s side of the story,” Natalie Mikolich said in a statement. Capriati posted on Twitter herself to defend her behaviour. “I pushed a man that was verbally assaulting me away from me. This man has been tormenting and abusing me for so long. The truth will prevail,” she wrote.
In the second part of her annual report, she described the problem as a “ticking time bomb” and calls for it to be added to the Government’s National Security Risk Assessment register, alongside terrorism and severe weather. She said routine operations such as hip replacements or organ donations could pose deadly risks in just 20 years’ time if we lose the ability to fight infection. Dame Sally has made 17 recommendations to politicians and policymakers including better hygiene in schools, hospitals, care homes and public places. She also called for better protection of our current stock of antibiotics and is urged GPs to prescribe antibiotics only when absolutely necessary. “We all have a role to play. And as a public we need to accept that many infections that take us to GPs or keep us at home, don’t need antibiotics,” she said. “So if a GP says ‘no you don’t need an antibiotic’, please don’t demand an antibiotic and put ridiculous pressure on GPs. All it’s doing is building antimicrobial resistance and we’re giving a dreadful future to our children and grandchildren.”
25
A new infectious disease has been discovered every year for the last 30 years but there have been almost no new antibiotics discovered since 1987. The plan is to “incentivise” pharmaceutical companies to plough resources into research but no decision has been taken on how to do that. “We have been waiting for the next new antibiotic to come along and treat those resistant cases but the pipeline is drying up,” Dame Sally added. “There are no new classes of antibiotics in the pipelines across the world and there are very few in development. That’s because we have not, as a global society, incentivised producing antibiotics. We have market failure and we really need to do something about this.” The Chief Medical Officer said the issue should also be considered by the Department for Food, Environment and Rural Affairs because around 50% of antibiotics used in the UK are given to animals. The Department of Health said it will soon publish the UK Antimicrobial Resistance Strategy setting out a fiveyear action plan aiming to address the issue.
Westwood Criticises First Lady
Vivienne Westwood has lashed out at Michelle Obama’s fashion sense, calling her taste in clothes “dreadful”. Asked by the New York Times about the First Lady’s style, the designer responded disdainfully: “Don’t talk about her. It’s dreadful what she wears. I don’t want to talk about it. Really, I can’t. She’s a very nice looking lady, but it’s a nonstarter regarding clothes that suit her.”
Despite being a spokeswoman for climate change group Climate Revolution, Westwood, 71, has not been won over by Mrs Obama’s philosophy of
recycling her outfits at public events. Turning her attention again to Kate Middleton, who Westwood was recently quoted criticising the Duchess of Cambridge for not recycling her outfits often enough, the controversial designer added: “It would be a wonderful thing for her to wear her clothes more than once. She’s getting this wonderful look, but if she has a red look today, why does she have to wear the blue look tomorrow? It’s just by way of an example to other people that you should buy less. Don’t buy so many clothes.” The designer then went on to compare Mrs Obama unfavourably to another famous
White House inhabitant. “Jackie Kennedy was a different matter altogether. It just has to suit her and be something that makes a human being more glamorous. That’s what fashion is there for. It’s there to help, not just to make you look more conservative.” When asked if fashion, like herself, can still provoke, Westwood - widely credited as being the creator of punk fashion in the 1970s - answered: “Probably not.” Despite her comments, Westwood also claimed “I don’t follow fashion. I really don’t. I’ve never been interested in it ... Fashion has become so whatever. I don’t think there are any stones left to unturn.”

Freedom Of The City For Caine
Sir Michael Caine with Museum Director Sharon Ament at Freedom of the City award ceremony.
Hollywood success made him an international star, he remains inextricably linked to his London roots. This exhibition will celebrate how the city influenced both Caine’s life and his career.” Sir Michael said: “I think the Museum is great for London, and I am so proud to be included.” Caine’s popularity has endured over the years and in recent years he has appeared in box office hits like The Dark Knight Rises and Inception. But the star, born in Rotherhithe, south London, the son of a Billingsgate Fish Market porter, is perhaps best known for his memorable roles in films such as The Italian
Job, Alfie and Zulu. He also has twice won the Oscar for best supporting actor, for The Cider House Rules and Hannah And Her Sisters. Caine was knighted in 2000 under his birth name, Maurice Micklewhite, and now joins the likes of Stephen Fry and Dame Judi Dench in receiving his latest honour. The Freedom of the City of London dates back to 1237. It originally referred to someone who had been given the right to trade or carry out their craft in London’s Square Mile. However, it is now largely a symbolic gesture and anyone can be nominated.
ZORRO THE SURFING PIGLET
VETErAN actor, Sir Michael Caine, has been given the Freedom of the City of London in recognition of his film career. The star, famous for his Cockney ac-
cent, turned 80 on March 14 and has been acting in films since the 1950s.
The special service did not take place at the Guildhall but, breaking with tradition, was held at the Museum of London, which is holding an
exhibition on Caine’s life and times. Beverley Cook, the museum curator, said: “Sir Michael Caine is one of London’s most loved and recognisable characters. He was the first actor to bring an authentic London accent to the big screen, and although
A TWO-MONTH-OLD piglet called Zorro is making a name for himself in New Zealand, and it is all down to his surfing skills. Owner Matthew Bell has been taking him out on the waves since he was just three weeks old. Mr Bell says the crossbred pig is a “phenomenal swimmer”.
He plans to continue searching for the perfect wave with his surfing mate until Zorro is too big for the board. “We’ll keep surfing until he gets to a size where he’s unmanageable and, yes, see what happens after that,” he said.

Beckham Tops Goal Rich List David Beckham is at the top of the list of the 50 richest players in the world with a personal fortune of £175m. The former England captain, who recently signed for Paris Saint-Germain and donated his salary to a local children’s charity, is followed by Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, who is rated as the world’s highest paid footballer, earning an estimated £100,000 a day.
The Goal Rich List 2013 puts the combined wealth of the top 50 players in the world at over £1.7bn. The Premier League only represents two of the top 10 players, with Spain’s La Liga taking the lion’s share of top spots. Keeping 37-yearold Beckham company in the top 10 are fellow
British players Wayne Rooney, who is seventh with a £50m fortune, and his Manchester United team-mate Rio Ferdinand, who is 10th with a wealth of £42m. Goal compiled the list using identifiable wealth, including annual accounts submitted to Companies House, properties, salary details, bonuses and other business interests. It estimates that Beckham earned £15m from his commercial interests in 2012, his most lucrative year to date. The latest annual accounts submitted to Companies House for Beckham Ventures Ltd for the year up to December 31, 2011, reported ‘assets’ worth £4.7m. The company is shared between Beckham, his wife Victoria, 38, now a successful fashion designer, and their manager Simon Fuller. Another company is Beckham Brand Ltd. As of December 31, 2011, the company reported ‘assets’ worth
Grow Your Own Teeth
Dentists could soon be telling patients to throw away their dentures after scientists discovered a way to ‘grow’ new teeth coated in enamel. The technique involved growing cells from human gum tissue, then combining them with tooth stem cells taken from a mouse embryo. These cell clusters were then transplanted by researchers into an adult mouse kidney where they subsequently grew into teeth-like structures.
It was also discovered that the human-mouse hybrid teeth contained dentin, the key structural material of teeth, as well as hard protective enamel. There was also evidence of root formation. The two kinds of cell used were epithelial ‘surface lining’
cells from human gum tissue, and mesenchymal ‘tooth’ cells from the mouse embryo. Professor Paul Sharpe, who led the research at King’s College said: “The human epithelial cells are capable of responding to signals from the embryonic tooth cells from the mouse to contribute to crown and root growth. These accessible human epithelial cells are thus a realistic source for consideration in human tooth formation.” At present it is not considered ethical or practical to
use human embryos in dentistry. “The next major challenge is to identify a way to culture adult human mesenchymal cells to be tooth-inducing,” said Prof Sharpe. “At the moment we can only make embryonic mesenchymal cells do this. What is required is the identification of adult sources of human epithelial and mesenchymal cells that can be obtained in sufficient numbers to make bio-tooth formation a viable alternative to dental implants.”
£5.4m. Managing editor of Goal Europe, Amar Singh, said: “The world’s top footballers can no longer be regarded as just athletes - they are major international brands and David Beckham is the biggest brand of them all. Our findings show just how much wealth footballers are able to accumulate by leveraging this. Far from the bling-loving, sports car-collecting stereotypes, the vast majority of footballers on the Goal Rich List are putting their money to positive use by setting up charitable foundations or funding community initiatives.” Alex Miller, editor of the Goal Rich List said: “The wealth David Beckham has accumulated and continues to earn is testament to his continued appeal, because while Beckham’s retirement from the game edges ever closer, his phenomenal earning power shows no sign of slowing down.”

Postal Workers Vote To Strike
Almost 90% of Post Office workers have voted in support of strike action in a ballot held by the Communication Workers Union (CWU) in a dispute about pay and job security. Threequarters of the union’s members that work in Crown branches - high street stores run by the Post Office - took part in the ballot. The CWU said the dispute was over a pay rise due last year, which 4,000 Post Office staff had not yet received. Fears over job security for 770 people working across the 70 offices, due to be franchised, was also an issue. The union’s deputy general secretary, Dave Ward, said its members had spoken “loud and clear”. They are fed up with being treated like second-class workers by the Post Office and they want their concerns to be listened to,” he said. “There hasn’t been so much as the pretence of negotiations from Post Office Ltd and that must change if strike action is to be avoided. We are now asking the company to come to the table to discuss pay and job security for these workers and avoid the need for strike action.”
But the Post Office said the CWU’s vote rejected an offer of cash payments totalling up to £3,400 which would have been paid before April 2015. The company’s Network and Sales Director Kevin Gilliland said it was disappointed by the CWU’s reaction. “Our offer of cash payments recognises the contribution being made by our people to the turnaround of the business,” he said. “There is absolutely no room for manoeuvre. These payments are fair at a time when our Crown network is operating at a loss. Our door remains wide open to discussions with the CWU as to how we get the first of these payments into pay packets as quickly as possible.” Crown post offices account for 3% of the 11,800 branches across the UK.

1D In Tattoo Row
BOY band, One Direction, have been forced to take down a social media request for fans to submit footage of their “real tattoos” to have a chance of appearing in their forthcoming film. The band wiped the request from Facebook and Twitter after a wave of criticism, as many fans of One Direction - who refer to the group as 1D - are under the age of 18.
On Saturday the band put out the call for images of fans’ tattoos on their official Twitter feed, which has more than 10 million followers, and to 1D’s 13 million Facebook friends. The band had encouraged fans to send videos of their tattoos to an email address, giving them the chance for the footage to appear in a 3D movie due out in the summer. The band tweeted: “Have a real #1D tattoo? Show us! Submit a 90 sec YouTube video to 1d3dfan@gmail.com and show us why you should be in the @1D3Dmovie!” The appeal on social media was retweeted by more than 4,000 followers and set as a favourite by nearly 6,000 people. But fan reaction was swift and by the next morning both sites had been wiped of the request, forcing release the explanatory statement by spokesman Simon Jones: “This tweet was posted in error and has now been removed. One
Direction do not want to encourage any of their fans to get 1D tattoos.” Facebook friend Julia Zwagerman said of the request: “Okay One Direction, I love you guys to pieces I really do, but promoting young girls to get a tattoo?” Twitter follower plumlilo said: “Why would you encourage people to get tattoos that they’ll regret in 10 years” Follower JB1DJanoskians added: “A real tattoo of 1D, im so sorry but that is a load of b*******, people who do that is sick.” Although the social media request was removed, fans can still upload photos of themselves to the band’s website, as the group intend to use a “mosaic made of thousands of little things - you” for their
movie poster. No restrictions are in place for imagery, other than that participants must be over the age of 14. Some members of the five-piece band, which were formed by talent show The X Factor, have taken to having socalled hipster tattoos adorning their bodies. Harry Styles and Zayn Malik have become famous for their collections of offbeat ink. One American website has a section devoted to” the ugliest tattoos of One Direction.” However, some fans were supportive of the tattoo request. Twitter user The1DScoop, operated by five female followers of the band, said: “Finally you realise we aren’t all 12.”

Have You Seen This Man? You Would Remember!
Police are hopeful a suspect’s distinctive tattoo will help them find people who purchased items he had allegedly stolen. Adam roberts, 24, is charged with three burglary counts related to thefts discovered last month from nearly 30 storage units in Godfrey, illinois. He is accused of then selling the goods to people who may not have known they were buying stolen goods.
Police said remembering Roberts should not be difficult. Madison County sheriff’s Captain Mike Dixon described
the skeleton-style tattoo, which covers his entire face, as “just odd”. “It’s the oddest thing I’ve ever seen in 20-plus years of law enforcement. I’ve seen horns on foreheads and stars on necks, but I’ve never seen a skull on a face. I can’t explain it.” Police recovered some $1,000 (£670) worth of stolen property but are still looking for televisions, a sewing machine and professional wrestling DVDs, among other items. “There probably isn’t another guy out there with that tattoo, so if they bought something from someone with a skull tattoo in the St. Louis area, it’s probably this guy,” Mr Dixon said. Roberts is being held on $60,000 (£40,177) bond.

Hulk Say “Hulk not go solo” When the latest “Iron Man 3” trailer was revealed last week, eagle-eyed comic book fans worldwide were stunned to see Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man charging towards the screen in his “Hulkbuster” armour!!
Immediately the Internet was buzzing - did this mean the green Goliath was going to make an appearance in the upcoming Iron Man sequel? After all, according to comic book lore, Stark developed this specific suit for one reason- to combat and control his friend Bruce Banner when his rage gets the better of him. However, excitement was soon quashed by a tweet from Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo; “A lot of folks have been asking about the next Hulk. The next time you will see my Hulk it will be in the Avengers 2. No plans for
standalone”. Could this be misdirection? You never know for sure with these things, it was denied strongly during preproduction that The Mandarin would feature as the “big bad” in “IM3” yet here he comes, and Marvel movies post credits sequences, famously include characters from other Superhero franchises, and help set the scene for upcoming features, so we may indeed be being lied to. Rumours already abound
about the next Avengers movie concluding with the decision that the Hulk is too dangerous to be allowed to remain on Earth, resulting in Banner being banished into space - which in turn sets up a “Planet Hulk” movie based on the comic story involving the Hulk, imprisoned in an intergalactic gladiator arena - forced to fight for his life! Whatever the truth is, we will certainly know at least a little more when “Iron Man 3” hits cinemas on April 18th.
Beiber needs a breather!
Anyone who’s read my column knows I often have a dig at master Beiber, but it’s Tongue in cheek - I’d never wish anything bad on the lad, but it seems my favourite Canadian teenage pop chipmunk who looks a bit like a young Ellen DeGeneres may have been overdoing it a bit, as a video shows the performer struggling to get his breath during a concert at the O2 Arena in London. The singer stoops forward with his hand over his face in the footage and it’s obvious he was struggling to breath, he left halfway through a song and was reported to have fainted backstage, he was later seen by paramedics

U.S. talk show host and ahem “comedienne” got more than she bargained for when she made fun of national treasure Adele’s weight on live TV last week - an absolute Skyfall of backlash and criticism.
The surgically enhanced ( or should that be ruined, she looks like a Gerry Anderson puppet, her play-on music should be Thunderbirds) celebrity was a guest on David Letterman and was discussing her night at the Oscars and, when mentioning that she had met Adele, began making fat gestures with her arms, much to the studio audiences and host’s audible disapproval. She continued the tasteless assault by suggesting she change the name of her song to “Rolling in the deep fried chicken”!! Rivers who last ate solids in 1997, was slammed for her comments on social networks, but my favourite response came from Aussie comedian Adam Hills who didn’t
hold back on his television show “The Last Leg”, when expressing his feelings about the childish visual and verbal attack; “If you make fat jokes about Adele, you’re being a d***,” Hills said. “And I’m referring to you, Joan Rivers.” “Adele is one of the very few women in pop music I want my daughter to look up to and you’re making jokes about the way she looks when

Facebook News Feed Re-Launch
FACEBOOK has re-launched its news feed and is now featuring new ways to filter content, larger pictures and adverts. instead of a single feed when a user logs in, the change will see multiple feeds dividing content by different categories, including music and photos. Content-specific feeds are already available on the site, but many are difficult to find.
The re-launch, announced at the Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, California, is an attempt to make users spend longer on the website as they browse through different feeds. The larger pictures are also expected to appeal to advertisers, in particular through mobile phone access, where images are difficult to see on a small screen. Founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said the new design was aimed at it becoming the “best personalised newspaper”. He added the move would “reduce clutter” and focus on the stories that the site’s one billion us-
ers care about. Facebook’s newsfeed, an ever-changing stream of photos, videos and comments uploaded from friends, is the first page most users see upon logging in. It is one of three “pillars” of the service, along with search and user profiles. The last major update was in September 2011. Since then, the company has incorporated adverts directly into the feed and has shifted its focus to creating “mobilefirst experiences”. Other expected changes include a video production tool which would allow friends to film short clips and edit them
together. Nick Adams, head of digital development at media agency Mindshare UK, said: “Facebook’s newsfeed reboot is likely to give users more control over what content they see - a move which is likely to prove popular after initial misgivings have died down and which may help to keep user engagement metrics up in the short to medium term. Significantly, the new content filtering options should make Facebook more appealing to content publishers and we may even hear about a new strategic content partnership from Facebook to add to their existing partnerships.”

Sharples in Session By John Sharples
Money For Nothing Apparently, Tenerife South airport is to start charging a euro for the use of a trolley. I am disgusted. This is not a deposit, it is a charge.
Don’t they charge enough money for their facilities as it is? Have you ever bought a
cup of coffee in the airport? The last time I bought two coffees there, the price was over five euros. I will not buy a coffee there on principle and I certainly won’t be using one of their trolleys. It is a disgrace, a real disgrace and another example of a company squeezing another cent out of its customers. It sickens me!
Don’t Panic It Isn’t Funny
When people tell me that I should watch a new television show because it is really funny, I just look at them and groan inwardly. I don’t believe that television has produced a truly funny comedy show for years. Television comedians all seem to have an angle rather than just being themselves and it appears that Graham Norton owns British TV and has it by the short and curlies.
No Smoke Without Tyre!
There has been a lot of huffing and puffing this week (of smoke that it) by the cardinals at the Vatican. What a silly and over dramatic system of voting for and announcing a new pope. I wonder if the black smoke is created by burning the old tyres from the Popemobile?
Anyway the new Argentinian man at the helm is Pope Francisco the first. I can’t help feeling that it is a farce. Pope Benedict has retired because he felt that he was too old to carry out the duties of the position to the standard that is required. So after days of decision, they
have elected a 76-year-old man into the position. What a sensible idea. Being such a
whippersnapper, he will probably be around for at least a few years.
What To Do
People often ask me what there is to do in Tenerife, apart from lie on a beach or around a pool, so here is my top ten!
Great comedy shows like “Fawlty Towers” and “Dad’s Army” just aren’t made any more. “Some mothers do ‘ave ‘em” and “Hi de HI” are a thing of the past and television companies churn out fodder that lasts five minutes. Catherine Tate and Little Britain lasted for two or three series, whereas “Dads Army” lasted for nine years, as did “Hi De Hi”. I yearn to see a good quality comedy series again; I think it is a dream that just won’t come to fruition. I don’t think that we are producing good quality comedy actors
anymore. We could never have a new Carry On Film that was truly funny as the modern comedians are more interested in being topical and politically correct. I mourn the days when John Inman would mince out of a lift in “Are you being served” or when Rene shouted out “You stupid woman” in “Allo Allo”. At least these comedy shows will never die and they are all available on video, but surely there is someone out there who can give us some good classic comedy worth watching!
Animal Magic
The whole horsemeat debacle seems to have fallen at the doorstep of Tesco. Of course, the fault doesn’t lie with them, but the press has had a field day at their expense. Horse is now off the menu however, they have decided to stick their necks out and have
bought the restaurant chain “Giraffe”.
Maybe they should buy shares in Camel cigarettes and Penguin biscuits. Maybe they could open a zoo. Whatever they do, i love going to Tesco, it’s my first port of call every time I visit the UK. I fully expect to see a petting zoo on my next visit! PS. Giraffe specialise in burgers ... Nuff Said!
1. Visit the spectacular and funny shows at Vivo Decades 2. Visit Mount Teide and its national park 3. Spend a day at Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz 4. Marvel at the animals in Las Aguilas Jungle Park 5. Siam Park in Adeje is a fabulous water park now famous all over Europe. 6. Great Sunday Carvery at Vivo Decades ... not to be missed. 7. Take a day out in a hire car and visit the beauty spot Masca. It’s Breath-taking 8. Catch a bus and spend the day shopping in Santa Cruz. 9. Travel to the North of the Island and enjoy Puerto de la Cruz and the lava pools of Garachico. 10. Put on your hiking boots and visit the beautiful gorge called Barranco del Infierno in Adeje.
Splash 2
All the critics in the UK pulled “Splash” apart. It was a celebrity diving show, presented by the Olympic medallist Tom Daley.
It received fair viewing figures and they have decided that the series will return next year. The critics aren’t always right and this show has shown us that they can get it wrong once again. The Spanish have bought the rights to the show and it began on Telecinco on
Wednesday night. The Spanish version is called “Mira Quien Salta” or “Look who Jumps” and it looks like it’ll be a lot of fun, It is hosted by popular presenter Jesus Vasquez and I am watching it
as I write this. l will be making it part of my weekly viewing ..... if you can, have a look in! If you speak Spanish, you will enjoy Boris who is the crazy judge on the panel!

Will Smith In London School Visit
WiLL Smith made hundreds of school girl’s day by making an impromptu visit to their school in Brixton and leading an impromptu rendition of the theme tune to The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
The 44-year-old actor turned up at St Martin-inthe-Fields High School for Girls, where he was met by some of the academy’s 940 students. A video of him on stage, with hundreds of screaming girls in the background, was later posted on YouTube. It happened during a walk-
about of the south London suburb with local MP Tessa Jowell and shadow business secretary Chuka Umunna. The Men In Black and I Am Legend star is in London with his 14-year-old son Jayden who is supporting Justin Bieber on his Believe tour, which includes four dates at the O2 Arena in London.
Writing on Twitter, Mr Umunna - who joined Smith for the Fresh Prince of Bel Air singalong - said the Hollywood star received a “proper Lambeth welcome”. Ms Jowell added: “Will Smith wanted to see ‘London’s Harlem’! So proud to show him the best of Brixton!”

Barclay’s Staff Millionaires
MOrE than 400 staff at Barclays received pay deals worth more than £1m last year, less than a year ago, but still a substantial number for a year in which the bank’s reputation was ruined. According to their annual report, the number of Barclay employees paid more than £1m fell from 473 in 2011, with proportionately larger falls in the number paid more than £2.5m and in excess of £5m. The disclosures are the most detailed given yet by Barclays and are designed to demonstrate a new commitment to transparency in the way it pays its top staff.
The 356-page annual report showed that Barclays had imposed around £450m of financial penalties on
staff because of the Liborrigging scandal through a combination of claw back and bonus reductions. Barclays said it had decided to comply ahead of schedule with new Government requirements for companies to publish a single figure for the total remuneration of executive directors. By one measure, this showed that Antony Jenkins, the new chief executive, earned a total of £1.129m in 2012, although this excludes a long-term share award valued at
£1.467m. The bank did not identify the pay package awarded to Rich Ricci, the chief executive of its investment bank, who was one of four executives to forego their annual bonus because of the Libor scandal, although he is thought to have received less than £3.5m in total. Five employees were paid more than £5m in 2012, although the bank declined to identify them or specify what their total remuneration had been.

M
any people who live in or take holidays on Tenerife think that a very common and prickly plant that can be seen all over the island is a cactus but the Canary Spurge (Euphorbia canariensis) is actually a succulent. Yes, it is adapted to withstand hot and dry conditions, and it does have spines all along its stems but it does not qualify for being included in the true cacti and I’ll explain why. There is a big difference between the plants that are classed as succulents and those that are cactus species. In cacti the spines all stick out from small circles or bumps known as areoles but in succulents they grow straight out of the stems. In most cacti the spines do not detach easily but in the Prickly Pears (Opuntia species) very small specialised ones known as glochids do. They are very difficult to get out if you happen to be unlucky enough to get one or more in you and they are very painful. They make an excellent defence system for a cactus. Some types of Opuntia have spines and glochids. But getting back to the Canary Spurge, which is also known in Spanish as the Cardón and is found on rocky mountainsides and in semidesert areas, it is a very good example of the vast difference in forms that species in the Euphorbiaceae can take. It has four or five-sided stems that bear spines along their edges, and as we have already noted, it looks like a cactus. There are other cacti-form spurges, succulent types, a very rare species found on Tenerife that grows into a tree (E. mellifera) and
others that look like ordinary leafy plants. The little Petty Spurge (E. peplus) is one of the spurges with leaves and it is grows as a garden weed in the UK and here in Tenerife. A nuisance as it may be when it crops up where we don’t want it, this species is being seriously studied as a potential remedy for skin cancers. One thing all the Euphorbias have is a white milky sap that oozes out if the stems or leaves are broken. In
has several other native species of euphorbia. The Sweet Spurge (E.balsamifera) is a succulent shrub that forms clumps with gnarled branching stems and leaves at the tops. It grows in coastal areas and even high on rocky volcanic cones like the Red Mountain in El Médano. One shrub that covers large areas of scrubland is the Tabaiba (E. broussonetii). It forms large bushes. The Red Spurge (E. atropurpurea) has dark red to purplish flowers
Year, makes a wonderful display along roads in the north of the is-
green leaves and the characteristic red bracts of its genus. It actually comes from Madagascar originally, so the idea that it was what was used to make the crown for Jesus seems very unlikely indeed! The Candelabra Spurge (E. lactea) forms a small tree of up to 5m in height and fans out into a very dis-

land. It is also planted in borders and pots to beautify our public places and add plenty of seasonal colour. In Latin its name means the “prettiest spurge” and it is very aptly named, I am sure you`ll agree? Another Euphorbia you will see planted in flower borders all around the island is the Crown of Thorns (E.
tinctive shape. It is a succulent and has spiny edges to its stems which are mottled with a milky-white along the middle section. This is just a small selection of the many species in the spurge family. They are all very different and very similar too if you know what to look out for.

most types it is toxic and can cause burns if you get it on your skin. As a matter of interest, the common succulent plant known as the Canary Candle Shrub (Senecio kleinia) is used in traditional folk medicine as remedy for this corrosive latex. The juice from the crushed stems is applied to the burns. Fortunately for us, Mother Nature has put both the plants in the same habitats, and you can often find the Canary Spurge growing on the same dry ground as the Canary Candle Shrub. Besides the Cardón, Tenerife
and is locally common in the south of the island. As with many species of spurge what look like its petals are actually bracts, which botanists think of as a special form of leaf. These Euphorbias can be very confusing can’t they? One of the commonly cultivated types you will all know well is the Poinsettia (E. pulcherrima) and yes, those bright red ‘petals’ are bracts that I have just told you about. This beautiful shrub grows into very large bushes here on Tenerife, and around Christmas and into the New
Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.
He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

World’s Best Restaurant In Health Scare
ONE of the world’s top restaurants has had to apologise to 63 of its customers after they became ill after visiting the haute cuisine establishment. Guests at Danish restaurant Noma - crowned the world’s best restaurant three years running in one poll - fell ill in February. The outbreak is thought to have been caused by a sick kitchen worker.
Health inspectors criticised the restaurant for not alerting authorities soon enough and for not taking proper action after the employee became ill after returning home from work. The Copenhagen restaurant, which has two Michelin stars, said in a report that internal procedures had not been good enough and said an email from the employee reporting his sickness had not been seen. Managing director Peter Kreiner said: “We are in the business of making people happy and taking care of our guests, so this is the worst thing that could happen to
us. Since the outbreak we have worked closely with the health authorities to get to the bottom of it and find the source of infection. We are extremely sorry about all of this and I have personally been in dialogue with all the guests who were affected and discussed compensation for them.” Noma, has a reputation for experimental ingredients using as ants and fermented grasshoppers, has been voted winner of The S. Pellegrino and Acqua Panna World’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Guests visit the restaurant from all over the world
and pay around 5,000 Danish kroner (£580) for a 12-course set menu for two including appetisers, treats to finish, wine pairing and a tour of the kitchen to meet some of the 50 chefs. When the restaurant releases monthly bookings, two-seater tables are usually snapped up in less than an hour. Food poisoning can have a major impact on top restaurants. In 2009 British chef Heston Blumenthal was forced to close his three-star restaurant The Fat Duck for around three weeks after hundreds of guests became ill.

Braised Beef with Red Wine and Cranberry
Being different in the kitchen doesn’t have to be complicated. Using sweet and savoury foods can quite often give you a fantastic dish. The simpler the better always leads to fantastic
results and this lovely seasonal dish gives that perfect flavour every time. It can be left to bubble away, filling the kitchen with comforting aromas with the promise of a perfect dinner!
Ingredients 1kg braising steak 3 onions 300ml red wine 300ml water with 3 beef stock cubes dissolved 3 rounded tbsp. cranberry sauce
Method: til tinged brown. Return the beef
Cut the meat into large slices. Tip 2 tbsps. flour with some salt and pepper into a large food bag, add the beef and shake to coat the pieces. Thinly slice the onions. Heat 2 tbsps. olive oil in a large heavy-based pan. Add the beef and fry on all sides until evenly browned. You may need to do this in two batches. Remove to a plate. Heat 1 tbsp. oil in the pan if you need it, then add the onions and fry quickly for 5 minutes un-
to the pan and add the wine and stock. Bring to the boil, stirring to scrape up the juices. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Reduce the heat, cover tightly with a lid and cook at a gentle simmer for 1 1⁄2 hours until the beef is tender. Stir in the cranberry sauce, taste and add more seasoning if necessary. Simmer for a further 5 minutes and serve with buttered mashed potatoes.
Tips / Hints:
Why not add some button mushrooms if your budget allows? You can use this recipe with Lamb shanks if you want. You could always add a little fresh rosemary and some root vegetables aswell. Just allow a little extra cooking time, so the lamb falls off the bone.
The Strangest Restaurants of the World! Graveyard Restaurant – Ahmadabad, India The Hellfire Club – Manchester, UK
Being surrounded by coffins while you eat is one thing, but it’s an entirely different matter when they’re occupied. The New Lucky Restaurant in Ahmadabad, India began as a tea stall outside a centuries-old Muslim cemetery, and grew to encompass it over the years.
The graves, situated between tables and often topped with candles, and resemble green-painted concrete coffins. One is said to contain a 16th century Sufi saint. Business is brisk, and the owners say that the graves bring them good luck.
The Hellfire Club, with its gothic décor and creepy theme, might not seem like a likely place to enjoy a world-class meal, but the food here is said to be divine. It’s located in a reportedly haunted 19th century building and resembles a dungeon,
with skeletons, coffins and red lights strewn throughout. Menu items include steaks named ‘Kiss of the Vampire’ and ‘Cannibal Holocaust’. – Note this restaurant has recently closed its doors for business and is now for sale!!

‘Moving House’
I’m moving house in a few months and I’m really nervous. I’ve been living in my parent’s home since they died in a car accident and I love living in the house I grew up in. I can’t afford it though and have to move to a new area I know nothing about. Do you think I’ll manage to settle in? Jackie
The thought of making new friends and getting to know a new area is always daunting. It’s one of those things that sounds far more difficult than it is though. Obviously staying where you are right now isn’t possible but I can see the sense of security it gives you. Try to stop worrying about your move, once you’ve been in your new home a week or so, I’m sure you’ll start to meet the neighbours and make some new friends. It’s almost a snowball effect, you meet one person and that in turns leads you into meeting more! Right now you’re barriers are up for all sorts of reasons but you have no choice in the matter so you really do have to work hard at overcoming your fears. Trust me, you’ll be just fine provided you calm down and stop fretting.

‘Bullying Bother’
I think my youngest child is getting bullied by local kids. He often comes home scuffed up and just runs up to his room and stays there. My older son goes to the same school and hangs around with the local gang. I can’t bear to think that he might be involved in bullying his brother. How can I find out? Kaitlin
Have you tried speaking to
‘Work Worries’
My sister works in the same office as me. She told me the other day that she heard our manager talking about redundancies. Since she’s told me I can’t think straight. I’m an only mum to 4 kids and can’t afford to lose my job. I’m so scared and I think my work is suffering. Annie It’s often the case that once the news of redundancies breaks in the
workplace that staff moral plummets. At the moment, all you have to go on is a secondhand conversation. Your sister could have completely misheard and got things entirely wrong couldn’t she? All this worrying could be nothing and the truth is, regardless of what’s going on at work, it’s never going to help! What you need to do is to tell convince yourself that this

may all be a storm in a tea cup. I doubt it’s worth asking questions at work. It it’s going to happen, you’ll find out in due course but even then there’s no way of telling who will stay and who will go is there? Get your head together and just concentrate on doing the best job you can. You have no hard and fast facts to go on so right now, you have nothing to worry about.
your eldest boy? You could have entirely the wrong end of the stick so it’s well worth discussing it with him. Another positive there is that he may well start to look out for his brother a bit more! You shouldn’t be afraid of involving the police either Karen, they will help you know! Bullying is a cowardly and pathetic thing to do and I know
only too well how the effects can blight a person’s life. The fact that you know this going on is vital first step to tackling it properly. Your son’s school as well the police should be able to help you and in turn help your son. Have the conversation with the older lad and take things from there. It’s not a nice thing to hear but knowing about it does put you in a strong position.
Shady Secret?
Lately my husband keeps wanting to try new stuff in the bedroom and it’s making me really worried. We’ve been married for 15 years and normally we have sex about once a week but lately he’s been wanting to do it much more often and keeps asking me to try things that I’m not comfortable with. Then when I tell him no he gets annoyed and we have an argument. I thought our sex life was fine before and I don’t know why things have suddenly changed.
And while I don’t want to do some of the stuff he asks for, I don’t want him to go elsewhere for it. Sue
Stand your ground Sue. Its patently not right for anybody to expect or demand you to do anything you’re not comfortable with. Quite frankly, if your husband has an issue with that, then maybe its time for you to reconsider your marriage anyway! The fact that him going elsewhere is even a possibility speaks volumes to me
sweetheart. There could be any number of reasons for his sudden change in the bedroom and he’s the only one who can tell you, why not ask him outright? Sit him down one evening and explain exactly how he’s making you feel. Too many couples forget to communicate their feelings and the end result is usually a parting of the ways. Right now, you’re obviously unhappy with things and unless you stand your ground nothing will ever change will it?

Churchill And The Fascist Plot Channel 4 - 19:00 - 20:00 In May 1940 Britain was at a moment of great peril. Winston Churchill had just become Prime Minister and was facing the prospect of a Nazi invasion. But it wasn’t just Hitler that concerned him. There was also the threat from Britain’s own fascist sympathisers: the so-called ‘fifth column’ that could undermine Britain’s war effort from within. Within a few days of Churchill becoming Prime Minister, MI5 swooped on addresses in central London. The targets were members of a secretive organisation called The Right Club, an extreme pro-Nazi society led by an aristocrat and MP in Churchill’s own party, Archibald Ramsay. Ramsay’s Right Club wanted to bring down the
41
government and forge an alliance with Hitler. When they stumbled across stolen secret documents that could discredit Churchill and prevent America from entering the war, they knew they’d hit the jackpot. What they didn’t know was that one of Britain’s most brilliant spymasters, Maxwell Knight, was setting a trap for them. If he was successful his move against Ramsay’s Right Club would enable him to round up over 1000 of Britain’s Nazi sympathisers and eliminate the enemy within. The compelling cloak-and-dagger story of how Churchill and MI5 hunted down The Right Club reveals a little-known aspect of war-time Britain: a murky world of fascist aristocrats, disaffected foreign nationals and spies.

The Spies Who Fooled The World BBC 1 - 22:35 - 23:35 On the eve of the 10th anniversary of one of the most contentious and divisive wars in living memory, Peter Taylor forensically investigates how key aspects of the secret intelligence used by Downing Street and the White House to justify the invasion of Iraq, were based on fabrication, wishful thinking and lies. Using remarkable first hand testimony, this onehour Panorama special reveals the full story of how two very highly placed sources, both close to Saddam Hussein, talked secretly to the CIA via an intermediary and directly to MI6 in the build-up to the war and said Iraq did not have an active Weapons of Mass
43
Destruction programme. But both were ignored. In a compelling story of spies and intrigue, deception and lies, key players reveal how sparse British and American intelligence was and how none of the handful of human sources had direct knowledge of WMD production. The former CIA Paris Station Chief, Bill Murray, explains how he used an intermediary to recruit Iraq’s Foreign Minister and his frustration when he found crucial intelligence from this source was rejected because it didn’t fit in with the White House’s agenda. The intelligence from Iraq’s Foreign Minister was confirmed four months later, when an MI6 officer met Iraq’s Head of Intelligence, who passed on the same message, saying Iraq had no WMD.

Now, in this delightful new series for ITV, a team of expert judges have scoured the country for Britain’s best loved recipe, with the winning dish earning a place on the shelves of Marks & Spencer and a £20,000 cash prize. Presented by Carol Vorderman, the series will see contestants up and down the country bringing their dishes to be sampled. The judges, Stacie Stewart from the Bee-

hive Bakery, food writer and editor Tom Parker Bowles, food connoisseur Loyd Grossman and vice chairwoman of the WI Anne Harrison, will be tasting the dishes and choosing their favourites to go through to the next round. From pasties to pastries, jellies to jalfrezis and cakes to casseroles, any dish is welcome as this colourful series celebrates food, glorious food for the nation. This is a show that is not on the lookout for the next British super chef but just one brilliant home cooked recipe that the nation can fall in love with, and anyone and everyone is in with a chance.

Lupain 6-4 red Pride Some dark forces at work here or at the very least a spooky coincidence. After the team sheets drawn up with no conferring, all players were to play the same opponent in the two halves, even when a different order was drawn up in both halves! If that wasn´t enough of a coincidence, the same players chosen in the doubles, were chosen to face each other too! Unfortunately the powers at work were not sufficient to overcome the losing force attached to Red Pride, who continued their losing streak unabated.

Clouseaus Emeralds 2 - 8 Hoops Hoops got off to a good start but it could have been different if Martyn hadn’t gone in off after potting the black. Hoops then rushed into a four frame lead with birthday boy Bernie putting in a five star finish in the fourth game. Clouseaus however wouldn’t give up and deservedly took both doubles to make it 4-2 going into singles. Again Hoops took over and won all four singles with birthday boy Bernie once again stealing the headlines with a fantastic clearance. Tasca A 6 - 4 Barracuda Bandits (catch up game) Tasca A 8 - 2 Barracuda Bandits A night when the Tasca bar hosted both the home and away fixtures, one after another. On reflection, maybe not such a good idea for the Barracuda Veterans, Tasca taking all six points to jump from third to second place and to within a point of the league leaders A closer game than the scoreline suggests, hurry home Jim, all is forgiven! Summerland Allstars 4 - 6 Dos Hermanos This was a very closely run match which was performed in a very friendly manner. After the first set of singles and the doubles it was neck and neck, however, in the last four singles Dos Hermanos managed to bring home the bacon. The match between Rick and Shaun was so close, Rick finished well to beat Shaun,Kevin managed to beat Graham and Neil beat Emma to take Dos Hermanos tally to the magic 6 points. Unfortunately Trevor couldn’t manage to put the icing on the cake and Adam for Allstars took the final frame. Barracuda Hunters 3 - 7 Britannia One frame each to open for the Villages local Derby, Don for Britannia took the 3rd, and Lee for Britannia arrived to 7 ball Erle. The 1st double was an epic, with lots of banter from both teams, plus the 2nd double went to Britannia, and now had 5 points and a draw at least. Klaus had a rerack in the 7th frame and took the point for the Hunters, but then Helen lost to Captain Steve for Britannia, the match now in their possession, then one each, Shaun for the Hunters & Reece for Britannia. Vivo 8 - 2 Bar Tasca B Another day at the office for Blue Divisions top team, and except for a stoic performance from Tasca captain Caren, who took both her singles in fine style, could have scored a full house. The only team to beat Vivo so far this season unfortunately could not come near this time round.
contract at Emirates
ArSENE Wenger insists that he intends to fulfil his contract with Arsenal, which currently runs until 2014.
The French manager’s position has come under increasing scrutiny in recent times, with some Arsenal fans growing frustrated with their lack of success in
recent years. Having bowed out of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, the Gunners have now gone eight years without silverware, although they have not finished outside the Premier League’s top four since 1996. Wenger remains a highlyrespected coach and he is continually linked with ri-
val clubs, with Real Madrid and Paris St Germain among those mentioned in recent months. But the Frenchman remains steadfastly loyal to Arsenal, and his stance does not look like changing. “I still have desire,” he told beIn Sport. “I am under contract until 2014 and I am used to fulfilling my contracts.”
England can call on Croft, Farrell and Launchbury
ENGLAND head coach Stuart Lancaster has received a triple injury boost ahead of the rBS Six Nations decider with Wales at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday.
Tom Croft returns from a serious neck injury to start at blindside flanker, while Owen Farrell gets the nod at fly-half and Wasps lock Launchbury has been passed fit after overcoming an elbow injury. Croft is set to make only his seventh appearance since returning to action after recovering from a broken neck that almost paralysed him, with the Leicester forward replacing James Haskell. Launchbury injured his elbow in the 18-11 victory over Italy at Twickenham on Sunday but he passed a fitness test. Saracens fly-half Farrell limped off in the win over France and missed last weekend’s game against Italy with a thigh strain but he has been preferred at No 10 to Toby Flood, who drops to the
bench.
Youngs back Ben Youngs gets the nod at scrum-half ahead of Danny Care, while Harlequins loosehead Joe Marler is the fourth change in personnel as he comes in for Mako Vunipola. Wales must win by eight points to be certain of retaining their Six Nations crown, while England will secure the Grand Slam if they can claim victory. “We have come a long way through the QBE (autumn) series and the Six Nations and we want to finish well on what will be a fantastic occasion in Cardiff,” said England
head coach Stuart Lancaster. “It will be a great experience for our English team. Every single player, whether they are in the 23 or not this Saturday, has contributed to getting us in this position and they should be proud of that. “The support of the country has been great throughout the tournament and I am sure they will be right behind us come 5 o’clock.” England: Goode, Ashton, Tuilagi, Barritt, Brown, Farrell, B Youngs; Marler, T Youngs, Cole, Launchbury, Parling, Croft, Robshaw, Wood. Replacements: Hartley, Wilson, Vunipola, Lawes, Haskell, Care, Flood, Twelvetrees.

The striker’s contract expires in the summer of 2014 and City manager Roberto Mancini has previously expressed doubts about his long-term future. Reports have suggested City could sell the Argentine this summer to avoid him leaving for nothing 12 months later, but Marwood has assured fans there is no reason to worry. Marwood feels Tevez is now enjoying life at the club and insists there have been no offers for a player who has in the past expressed
a desire to return to South America. “Everyone knows Carlos only has a year left on his contract but he has been fantastic for Manchester City, his scoring record, his tenacity, his energy,” Marwood said in the Daily Star. “I think he is in a good place at the moment. Roberto Mancini has talked about extending Tevez’s contract and these conversations will continue in the summer.
“We have had no offers and Carlos is happy at the club. Discussions will take place at the end of the season in terms of his future at City.” Tevez scored a hat-trick to lead Man City to a 5-0 victory over Barnsley in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday but Mancini admitted after the match that he did not know what sort of commitment to expect from the player beyond the summer.
Murray Advances With Hardfought Win Over Berlocq
Andy Murray is through to the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells after the British No 1 silenced Carlos Berlocq.
It was far from routine for Murray as he was rattled by both his opponent’s play and his grunting, but the Scot dug deep to record a 7-6 (74) 6-4 win. Murray was broken twice in the first set - and showed his displeasure more than once - before setting up a last-eight clash with Juan Martin Del Potro.
“It was tough,” Murray told atptour.com. “He started well and he was playing very aggressive.
Chances
“He had a lot of chances in the first set. He obviously served for it. “And then the second set was kind of the other way around. I had a lot of chances, but it was still tight. All the games were pretty close, a lot of long games and longish rallies.” Berlocq had led 3-1 and then served for the first set after breaking Murray for a second time in the ninth
time. However Murray held his nerve before claiming the first set on the tiebreak when Berlocq pushed an overhead shot long after some great defence from his opponent Murray had broken the Argentinean at the start of the second set and although Berlocq hit back to level it just delayed the inevitable. A neat lob helped Murray move into a 4-3 advantage, with the third seed saving a break point to hold. And although Berlocq kept his hopes alive, Murray served out for the victory.

A Bump In The Road For CD Tenerife
CD Tenerife Outnumbered SELF doubt and errors led to a second successive defeat for CD Tenerife as they rolled out the welcome mat at fortress Santa Cruz.
Guijuelo arrived sliding towards relegation but they made the most of the few chances they created to snatch a 1-2 victory.
Guillem Marti
Absent friends left big gaps to fill, goal striker Aridane and right back Moyano were serving suspensions, Guillem Marti couldn’t convert impressive cameo roles as a late substitute into leading the attack from the start and Sergio Rodriguez had a stinker of a game covering in defence. Early jitters set the tone for Tenerife; Sergio Aragoneses only half cleared a corner and was grateful to Yeray for clearing the resulting danger. Central defender Alberto tied himself in knots; his savior was Raul Llorente who mopped up after his slip. Rodriguez kept backing off instead of challenging his opponents and Moreira kept exploiting his hesitancy. Up front Guillem was not getting the service he needed, Suso spent a lot of his time in a more central role rather than opening up the defence down the wing. When Tenerife did break through they found goalie Edu Calvo dominating his area, and claiming every loose ball in the air. Suso had the best chance chipping a shot just over the target but when the home side took the lead it owed as much to luck as judgement. Guillem got a shot in and with both sides frozen like rabbits in headlights Manolo tried to head clear but helped the ball into his own net. Suso had a sniff of goal just before the break but Calvo raced out to clear the danger. Tenerife’s thoughts were drifting to the dressing room and as Rodriguez back peddled again Moreno picked his spot at the near
Sergio rodriguez post and found Aragoneses wanting as the shot eluded his desperate grasp. At least Tenerife re-emerged for the second half with added urgency, Cristo Martin tested Calvo with a low shot and ten minutes later set up Llorente with a crafty back heel but the full back put the ball wide. Changes were needed, young B team scoring sensation Ayoze replaced Guillem and Chechu swapped with
Yeray and for 10 minutes he flew at the Guijuelo defence. Cristo had another go at Clavo but the keeper denied him again and then came the killer blow. Volero took full advantage of an inviting gap down the wing and Llorente could only partially block the ball before Volero scored to stun the 8,268 home crowd. Time was ticking away, Alberto pushed up from defence and had a couple of pops at goal, a header
pounced on by the keeper and a wide shot that earned a dig from Ayoze who thought he was better placed. The blow was softened later in the day when closest rivals Leganes and Oviedo both drew leaving Tenerife five points clear at the top but with ten games of the regular season to go the Santa Cruz boys need to regain their best form to launch them into the promotion play offs.

Away Win Joy For CD Marino
Traveling to the mainland every other week has been a thankless task this season for bottom placed CD Marino but they finally broke their duck with a hard earned 0-1 victory at nearest rivals Alcalá. It still leaves the Las Americas side nine points behind their hosts and 15 points from drop zone safety but it was a very welcome boost.
The magic moment came in the 50th minute when Aaron passed to Chema who fired his team into the lead. The
55
goal scorer had gone close in the first half after a long range shot from Sandro soon after Alberto had denied Biendi with a fine save. Thoughts of a win were kept on hold as Rubiato hit the visitors post in the second half and he had another close call in the final minute. The season has 10 games to go, survival is a monumental task but the next two games are at home starting with Salamanca on Sunday at 11am. Realistically there is no escape but a late flourish could make things interesting and their fans deserve every bit of hope they can get.
CB Canarias Push Barcelona All The Way
For Tenerife based basketball fans it was one of the biggest games of the ACB season as Barcelona came to La Laguna to take on the resolute home form of CB Canarias. Despite going into a speedy 0-8 lead the Catalan giants were given a tough match in front of a 4,987 crowd before emerging as 81-89 winners.
Blagota Sekulic and Saul Blanco carried the charge for the home side with 21 points each and Fitio Lampropoulos gave good backing with 13 points. The third quarter proved decisive as Barcelona took it 16-22 with no more than three points separating the sides in the other periods. Levi Rost had a bit of an off day by his high standards, missing two free shots that could have changed the complexion of the clash. This Sunday CB Canarias face the other big guns Real Madrid away at 6pm.
From Red Cards To Postcards
Acknowledged as the greatest referee in World football, Pierluigi Colina now favours Tenerife as a regular holiday location and on his latest trip he popped into La Estancia restaurant in Chayofa.
Still remembered for taking charge of the classic World Cup Final of 2002 between Brazil and Germany he was voted the best referee six times by the sports governing body FIFA. Spending a few days in Costa Adeje the Italian diplomatically side stepped the burning issue of the red card in Manchester United’s Champions League exit.
Boxing Ban Is Below The Belt Canarian fans of boxing and kick boxing are fighting mad at the age limit restrictions revived by the government of the Canary Islands. Under 18’s can no longer take part in fights or go to watch bouts featuring over age contestants. The ban was introduced last week with immediate effect and has created a storm of protest.
The Councillor of Sports and Culture for the Cabildo, Victoria Monroy, dealt the low blow on the grounds of protecting the young but leading figures in the sport have been hitting
back. Javier Rolo, President of the Canarian Kick Boxing Federation was keen to point out the good the sports do for young people. “We take a lot of kids from poor suburbs and train them to be fit and healthy and teach them discipline.
