The more sharp eyed amongst you will notice that this week I have published a two week T.V. Guide. Yes, it is that time again. Vivo Treasure Island welcomes back our Soul In The Sunner’s for another week of fun, frolics and some seriously good Northen Soul Music. Tenerife Weekly - 5th April - 18th April 2013 next issue will be out on the streets on Friday 19th of April, as ever, full to the brim of news - The Bitter & Twisted Shows restart on Monday 22nd. Take a look at our spread of pages 28-29. Janet Anscombe has written about the “Must See’s” in Tenerife, and there are some really beautiful parts of our Island waiting for you to discover. I will endeavour to take in a few of them during my holiday. Any of you who have already been to some of these incredible sights, let me know what you think – we can compare notes.

My absolute favourite story this week has to be on the back page. I can tell all of you that like a flutter on the Grand National, exactly who is going to win. Well, ok, it’s not actually me, professor William Hartson has come up with a formula for a dead cert. I will be gobsmacked if Seabass actually wins, and may even place a bet myself next year, using the formula of course! See you all in two weeks!

Continued from page 1 Reduce Rates In Line

With Property Prices

The Socialist Party has filed a motion for the reduction of the IBI (Rates). They requested the support of the political groups represented in the City Council to urge the cadastre General Directorate for a downward revision of the existing cadastral values.

The Cabildo de Tenerife has criticized AENA for its refusal to extend the hours from Los Rodeos airport in the north of Tenerife. And now the insular Government has denounced AENA for the fact that the new terminal at Reina Sofia airport in the south is not being used. A report by Turismo de Tenerife argues that this infrastructure, which cost 39.1 billion euros, “at this time, although it is inaugurated and likely to be implemented, does not have any use and has only been used in specific moments and for security reasons”.

In addition, the report states that “once the work was completed the work,

none of the airlines that AENA has offered the terminal to have wanted to move their operation to the new area, because of difficulties posed to passengers for the transfer from one terminal to another and to access to ticket desks and loading bays”. Building on the new terminal started in 2005 and was completed three years later. Its 21.400 square meters accommodates 32 new ticket desks and a parking area of 10,500 square meters (213 parking spaces for vehicles on three levels), eight stops for buses and taxis, an offloading bay and two new boarding gates (located in the walkway between the new terminal and the original). The council’s report states that according to original forecasts, it was claimed that this new building would increase the capacity of the airfield from 3,000 to 4,400 passengers at a time and that outbound

traffic of airline companies would be absorbed in the expansion (especially Ryanair). Minister of tourism of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Carlos Alonso, has demanded that AENA, makes the necessary adaptions to the needs of the airport, “since it has a design problem”. He explained that since the old terminal is already heavily used, it must modify this new facility so that it can host area arrivals, departures and baggage collection, “since it is necessary for use”. The report states that the terminal “has a design problem making it inoperative for airlines, so that since it was launched in 2009, it is almost unused and only operated at specific moments”. Therefore he proposed that when the terminal is adapted it could generate substantial revenue through the rental of commercial premises and car parks, and would provide more comfort to passengers.

“The last cadastral valuation was performed in 2008, when the property market held much higher prices than the current selling prices,” said Victor Chinea, Socialist spokesman. “The Canarian data statistics are compelling as they show a decrease of 21% in the period 20082012, i.e. 1.680,20 euros going down to 1.322,10 euros per square meter. In the current circumstances, homeowners, will face a fee by IBI that would inevitably increase until 2018, despite the fact that in the munici-

pality tax rate is located at the legal minimum”, says the Mayor. The Socialists say that the application of an IBI is unfair, since the current value of the market is well below which was set for the collective valuation carried out in 2008. “Own Royal Decree that regulates the real estate cadastre States that grounds for modification of cadastral values should be five years after the last property assessment and the substantial differences between market values and which served as

the basis for the determination of the existing cadastral values”, underlines the PSOE representative. They say that in the case of the municipality of San Miguel de Abona these two reasons are met, so the request for review is sufficiently justified to the General direction of the cadastre. They expect the Socialists have the unanimous support of all the members of the Town Council to this motion, “since we ease the financial burdens of many families in San Miguel”, says Chinea.

Saida Prieto, the carnaval queen contestant who was badly burnt when her gown caught fire is coming back to Tenerife. She has been in the burns unit of the Hospital Virgen del Rocío de Sevilla since 7 February, where she is said to have made considerable improvement in her recovery over the last week. On her return, she will be admitted to the University Hospital to continue her treatment. The Magma festival, which was due to take place on Saturday 30th, was cancelled at the last minute, as the venue, the Magma Art and Congress Centre in Costa Adeje, said it didn’t have a special licence for the event. The organizer, Airbag Events, says it will be claiming damages from the venue’s management company, and the return of the rent already paid. Airbag had also paid for cleaning, and part of the security costs, and still to be considered are the artists, D.J’s, dancers, technicians and waiters, plus travel and accommodation costs. 80% of the tickets had been sold. The Ayuntamiento de Arona, through its Municipal sports Board, is now publishing a newsletter about local sports. This publication is intended to be monthly, with the most relevant content in the sports field in the Southern District. The main goal of this new initiative is to promote among the population the sporting achievements of athletes, as well as the announcement of the sports events that will take place in the municipality. In principle the Arona sports Digital newsletter will consist of four sites where the activities can be followed and achievements of the municipal sport, eventually will be the possibility to incorporate some more. Red Cross attended 160 situations over the Easter weekend according to a statement from the humanitarian organization. During Holy week, the institution provided aid on the beaches of the Roque de las Bodegas, Benijo, Las Teresitas Radazul, the pools of Bajamar, Punta del Hidalgo, and in Tabaiba. The Red Cross had a team of 26 people, including rescue workers, doctors, nurses and drivers, in order to meet the increased demand on beaches during this holiday period. In addition, the institution has some 16 boats and jet skis and 14 relief posts located in the different beaches and pools in the province. Most of the attention was for healthcare, assisting 117 people affected by shock, bruises, stings, sprains, wounds and burns, but also giving help to 23 people with disabilities. The Red Cross also helped 16 people from the sea, attended 1 evacuation to hospital and returned 3 lost children to their families. A rapist who spent 20 years on the run after fleeing to Tenerife has finally been brought to justice and jailed for 6 1/2 years. Sean Connolly, formerly of Middleton, attacked his victim in her Greater Manchester home back in 1993. Manchester Crown Court heard that the woman’s young children were sleeping upstairs when the attack began. Connolly was arrested and charged with rape but failed to show up for his trial later that year and fled the country. After a stint in the Canary Islands, he returned to the UK, eventually starting a family and setting up a successful tiling business. The respectable façade he had constructed was torn down when police, who were going through outstanding warrants, caught up with him last year. The number of registered unemployed people in the Canary Islands has increased by 198 people in March 2013 compared to February 2013, an increase of 0.07% driven by increased unemployment in three sectors: agriculture, services and the unemployed with no previous job. Year on Year figures show that unemployment is up 2.81% compared to March 2012. At the end of March 2013 there were 291,672 unemployed people in the Canaries, 7,973 more than this time last year.

LAST week I drove out to Las Galletas to meet up with 2 fascinating people, keith and Angie Freeland are paranormal investigators that contacted me after reading my article “Tenerife’s Most haunted”, in which I mentioned several ghostly locations that they had investigated as founder members of “The Tenerife Paranormal Society”.

Having communicated through several emails, I was looking forward to meeting them in person. Once introductions were out of the way, we sat down at a small cafe, where Angie and Keith began by showing me several large newspaper articles from publications such as “El Dia”, Irish “Daily Mirror” and the magazine “Woman’s Way”. They were really impressive and made it obvious that they were serious and experienced. Angie explained to me that as well as carrying out investigations with “Paranormal Troubleshooters Interna-

tional”, she is also a trained Psychic Medium who regularly does readings in front of audiences as well as one to one readings; this gift is obviously very useful during an investigation as Angie can sense any spirits that may be at a location. She explained to me that she was a physical medium which means that once she has made contact she encourages the spirit to physically move an object, often this involves using a table taken to the location which the spirit moves - sometimes with startling results! Keith made it clear that it’s by no means only a psychic investigation- the team bring along a variety of scientific and technological equipment including EMF (electromagnetic field) meters, infrared cameras, dowsing rods and many other instruments used for sensing paranormal activity. They also explained that they are extremely methodical in their research and don’t always immediately jump to the conclusion that every strange noise, or image on a photo etc., is a ghost, as Angie said, even when there is a presence-sometimes a noise is just a car door or a rumbling stomach.

email Marc: marc@tenerife-weekly.com We talked for almost 2 hours - I wish I’d taken a tape recorder but this was my 1st interview and I was unprepared! We discussed the difference between a haunting and speaking to a spirit who wishes to contact someone in particular - the former is often unaware of us and is similar to a recording, the latter is an intelligence and manifests in order to send a message, however it’s not always that straightforward - how water is often present at a haunted location-which

is interesting as the Barranco de Barajoz, a sight of multiple unexplained phenomena, is literally surrounded by aqueducts of running water, we touched on demonic possession, they’ve never seen any reason to believe in the Devil, I was also relieved to hear that spirits cannot physically harm us, as our meeting ended with us scheduling a couple of dates in April when I’ll be accompanying them on an investigation- at a haunted location-in the dark- at night!! I can’t wait.... I think!

Housing Shortage “created by Government” “This data shows the Canary Islands suffer no shortage of housing, but an excess of bad governments that have prioritized the speculation at the expense of the constitutional right to housing”

Left United Canaria (IUC) has denounced the fact that the Canary Islands have sixteen empty houses for each foreclosure during the crisis. Between 2008 and 2012, the Canary Islands courts reprocessed 9,433 homes in a community which has more than 153,000 empty houses. In the opinion of the Coordinator of UCC, Ramón Trujillo: “this data shows the Canary Islands suffer no shortage of housing, but an excess of bad governments that have prioritized the speculation at the expense of the constitutional right to housing. In fact, the Canary Islands has 515 homes per 1,000 inhabitants, against the average in the European Union of 438, but Islands Governments subjected to real estate interests have made a perverse

5

institutional decision that, at the time of the crisis, has expelled thousands of families from their homes. However, it has also allowed the number of owners with more than 50 homes and real estate to grow by 18%.” The UCC states that “the Governments of PP, PSOE and CC are specifically responsible for the fact that the Canary Islands have no housing for social rent which would have prevented the evictions caused by the crisis.” The Canary Islands has only 16,500 public houses available for social rent and should have 93.600, in line with the European average.” IUC raises the need to prohibit evictions of people who have lost employment, or have small children or some disabilities, boost the availability of social housing, and measures of fiscal penalty of empty housing. Spain is the only country within the European Union that has more dwellings per thousand inhabitants and that the housing shortage has been artificially created by Governments which have bowed to the demands of the speculators.

The VII Tenerife Easter Brings HOPE! International Film Music Festival

Easter is the time of year when most people think of spring and with the clocks going forward this year in the early hours of Easter Sunday ‘summer time’ has arrived at last! All the trappings of Easter bring colour and warmth that declare the dark days of winter are over the bright days of spring have come!!!

A note for Musical film buff’s diaries, the VII Tenerife International Film Music Festival will be held from July 5th to 14th and features a journey throughout the 35 years of excellence in the field of film music. Included will be a discographic edition of Varese Sarabande, a label where some of the most prominent cinematographic composers’ careers have been forged.

For another year, the Festival presents an interesting musical agenda with highlights such as the concert FIMUCITÉ dedicated to the 007 saga, and which will in-

clude a live performance by the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra of the recent Oscar winning Best Original Song from the film Skyfall. The importance of James Bond in film history has also inspired also some of the parallel activities planned for this year’s Festival. The Guimerá Theatre will open its doors for FIMUCITÉ 2013 to hold a new Big Band de Canarias performance, after last year’s successful results. This time, they will pay tribute to one of the greatest figures of Hollywood Golden Age, Elmer Bernstein, composer of scores for films such as The Magnificent Seven, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Airplane!, and to whom the Festival pays tribute this year. As part of the wide variety of parallel activities of the Festival, there will be a work-

shop about film music composition, which was started last year thanks to the collaboration between FIMUCITÉ and the biggest private film music college in the world, the Berklee College of Music. The workshop will play host to professional musicians, students and the general public who will be able to enjoy a unique workshop where accomplished international professionals will share their talents and explain the process of producing a soundtrack as well as of creating music for an audiovisual project. New this year and aimed at professionals, the Tenerife International Film Music Festival will include the Cinematographic Market Euroforum, coordinated by Guillermo Ríos, and which will be held at Hotel Mencey in Santa Cruz.

In Tenerife it’s easy to forget winter, when all our days are filled with sunshine but reports from back home and ‘swallows’ making their way to our islands are constant reminders! Back in many parts of the United Kingdom Easter this year Easter has not announced the arrival of spring at all and many places are still gripped by the worst winter weather since records began. In Northern Ireland emergency aid is still being flown into people cut off by the huge snow drifts! Even with the extra ‘hour of daylight’ the days are dark and ominous? For Christians around the world Easter is far more than just the arrival of Spring, indeed it is in the Christian message of Easter that we can find the HOPE that nature mirrors each Springtime as new life emerges

from a seemingly dead landscape. Easter is the time when we remember the Crucifixion of Jesus as depicted wonderfully every year through to streets of Adeje. But Easter has more than Crucifixion and death as its focus, for on that first Easter Sunday it tells of how Jesus rose from the dead too, indeed it is that aspect of Easter, that “good news” that brings HOPE and expectancy to the Christian Community. On Easter Sunday that was the message people heard at Cristianos Community Church. As people gathered in the Video Room, of the Sol Princesa Dacil Hotel, Pastor Adrian spoke of the relevancy of the Easter message to everyone today. For whether the sun is shining upon or the dark clouds of doubt or fear are

hanging over lives there is a God who is alive, who is willing to enter into our circumstances. A God who has the power to dry our tears, heal our broken hearts and focus us on something greater than this temporal life with all its troubles. The Christian message from Easter one that speaks of hope instead of despair, light instead of darkness, spring instead of winter and life instead of death! If you would like to hear any more or would like to talk to Pastor Adrian, then you are welcome to join the folks as they meet every Sunday at 11.00am and Wednesdays at 5.00pm in the Princesa Dacil Hotel or you can find us on www.cristianoscommunitychurch.com or simply phone Adrian on 608 409 016. We HOPE you had a great Easter. God bless YOU!

Live Arico Fund Raiser By Sharon Edens Pictures By Steve Sands

WhAT a fabulous evening of entertainment and frolics at The Top Square San Blas with Suzi Q, Jo Cassidy, Robbie Dominic, Jan Monroe and Colin Stevens entertaining us from start to finish. We also were delighted to have Caroline Stapleton from the emerald Lounge entertain us with her accordion which got Suzi Q up giving it her all with her own version of an Irish jig – I don’t think Riverdance will be calling her up anytime soon! We had a special treat also from Dave Slippers of Slippers bar and Sean Wren who dressed for their parts miming to Goodness Gracious Me!!!!!

A fantastic 740 Euros was raised on the night through a huge raffle with prizes donated from supporters, tickets were sold by Pat and Gill – no one got away!! There was also an auction of a ‘digging dog’ cake donated by Shazzaroo Homecrafts and a hand painted oil on canvas of Teide

The event was organised to raise funds for the ‘special needs’ animals who Live Arico PAWS are supporting at the moment. This includes the puppies that were abandoned recently and found to have a congenital eye de-

by an ‘unknown’ local artist. The square was buzzing; a true community spirit was evident. Thank you to everyone for coming along, giving your support and donating prizes or money – the animals really appreciate it, as we do! The next big event on the Live Arico PAWS calendar is the ‘Great Grub Giveaway’. We have a significant amount of dog food to give away to charities, refuges and foster carers. This will be distributed by the committee and hope it helps out with the

financial strains that feeding the animals puts on the fantastic supporters they have. Further information can be obtained from Siobhan Ferguson or Sue Havenhand. Live Arico PAWS will hold lots of fun events throughout the year, to raise funds, to raise awareness and to bring the animal community of Tenerife together. For too long there has been an underlying discourse – we are here for all animals and their supporters – whoever they are.

Dorada-Ingane Yami Golf Tournament 2013

The Dorada-Ingane Yami Golf Tournament 2013 is an exciting golf day with the potential to capture hearts and change lives. The event is being put together by the staff and management of Pearly Grey Ocean Club together with Costa Adeje Golf Course. Our aim is to ensure that it is a 1st class experience and a memorable day for the golfers and the purpose of it all is to raise awareness and funds for Ingane Yami Children’s Village. Together with our principal sponsors Dorada, we are extremely proud to be hosting the fourth annual Ingane Yami Golf Tournament.

About the charity

Ingane Yami is a non profit organisation whose primary goal and purpose is to provide a stable family environment for orphaned children in the KwaZulu Natal province, South Africa. Since 2009 Pearly Grey Ocean Club has been actively involved helping to raise the funds required to support this great cause. We have undertaken to fund the building of and ongoing running costs of houses in the village, each house costs around 38,000 Euros to build. To date the funds we have raised have paid for the building of one house and we are already 50% of the way to the building of a second home. Our involvement doesn’t stop once we have built enough houses. Ingane Yami is a responsibility, its core values are our values, and its

long term strategy is a shared belief. That is, to raise and nurture a child’s life in a loving family environment, to give them the tools and opportunities to realise their true potential.

It should be remembered that Wehbe dressed the coaching staff for CB Canarias and is one of the Tenerife firms working together with the Island’s clubs.

Estrella’s Summer Camp

You would think that staff at Estrellas would want to chill out in their summer holidays after yet another busy year of shows, LAMDA exams and charity events. But oh no, Maureen Sands, Director of Estrellas Theatre School is already planning the Estrellas Boot Camp for her students. This year students are off up to the North of the island to camp out for a week under the stars. From the 1st to the 5th of July Finca Libelulas in the La Orotava valley will be their home. A second week is a possibility should there be enough interest.

The main idea behind this week is to get the kids away from their laptops, facebook and twitter as Maureen wants the kids to experience that there is more to life than computers. The children will be involved in team building activities throughout the whole week. The children will cook their own meals, tidy up their own areas and make their own entertainment

in the evenings which will not be hard as they are all great entertainers. They will be out every day on a variety of excursions from Loro Parque to walking in the mountains. There will be no time for rest. Maureen hopes that all the children find this a really positive experience and one to be repeated. 9 Celebration of Fife Sinclaire Electricity Bills To Drop!

www.tenerife-weekly.com

Tenerife Weekly - 5th April - 18th April 2013

(Kirk Warsop’s ) Life

Finally, some good news this week, electricity bills will fall by six point six two per cent, affecting some twenty two million customers, saving consumers around 29.35 Euros per year on the average bill. The reduction in price for electricity has been caused by the drop in consumption by 15% in the 2nd quarter of this year.

By Lesley Marie Wade.

We all congregated on the sea front in Los Abrigos, where Pastor Bill said some wonderful words for Fife and those of us who were gathered, we then all scattered yellow and white roses onto the sea, very moving.

When we returned to La Caña bar where everyone wrote a message and attached it to a helium filled balloon and we had a mass balloon release with everyone’s personal message being sent off into the sky. The bar was beautifully decorated with balloons by Magic Moments and donated by one of my best friends, Evette. Roses were arranged by my friend Juan who works in La Caña. The Buffet was worked on by Dave and supplied by Patsy and Terry, the owners of La Caña. We had music playing and Fife singing, along with a selection of his favourites, like Floyd and Les Miserables, organised by Dave Thompson. We also had a video of him

Dear Editor,

Re the article on illegal letting last week, it would appear that since the High Court of the Canaries ejected the case of the authorities against unregistered rental agents, that the Bolkestein Directive law should have been fully implemented, however that has obviously not been the case for whatever reason. Reading the directive, there seems very little within the Canarian rental law which actually conforms to this EU law, and therefore could it not be that it is the Canarian law operating “illegally”? The EU law is specifically to reform member

performing in full costume, Elvis, courtesy of Terry Paul McCartney. Kirk’s father, Eddie Oliver and Ann his wife, along with daughter Claire, her husband Lorne and son Lewis came along to meet Kirk’s friends from the village although most of our entertainment friends had left by that time

for work commitments. But they were able to have their own balloon release later in the evening. All in all it was a memorable day running a whole gauntlet of emotions for everyone, with messages sent from those who could only attend in thought and spirit.

states which allows restrictive trade practices, which surely must include the present system here, of sole agents and touristic lets, the law being very specific in promoting a high degree of competitiveness. That the Canaries can use their Ultra Peripheral Region status as method of overruling EU laws, seems very unlikely, given that, “It should not be possible for Member States to circumvent the rules laid down in this Directive”, of course, should anyone have knowledge of EU case law brought after 2006 then that may change the situation, however it would appear to anyone looking closely at this status, that it applies only to economic

situations and specifically excludes items in law. There appears to me no simple way of summing up, however given that the 1995 rental law appears to be in direct conflict with the EU2006 law , I would hope for the sake of justice that the all fines be annulled . It would be very interesting to hear the arguments put forward by an authority which itself does not adhere to the law. The new legislation for letting may be an indicator of course, should the authorities take heed of the many rules of the EU with regards to authorisation, they have much work to do to in order to comply. The charges for gas will be also being frozen, according to the ministry for industry, energy and tourism. The price of natural gas will remain unchanged. Telefónica, who had intended to apply a rise in the price of line rental, which has remained frozen since 2008,

has decided to postpone it this week. The telephone company had intended to increase the price to 14.85 Euros per month. The decision is conditional, enabling it to update the situation according to economic data. For the time being, line rental will remain frozen at 13.74 Euros

per month. The Council of the Commission for the telecommunications market (CMT) passed a resolution that ratified the proposed deregulate of the price of line rental to help Telefónica increase their share of the market, at the end of last year.

Workers from Metesa, (electric assemblies of Tenerife SA), the company responsible for repairing Telefónica faults, are on strike in protest of a new employment regulation that threatens the jobs for 20% of the work force.

up to 80 people could lose their jobs. Most of the company’s activity focuses on Tenerife, although it also has a delegation in Gran Canaria of 65 workers. Metesa is responsible for telephone repairs and other services faults such as ADSL lines. It also works with Unelco and Disa in Tenerife. A representative of the workers said that the company foresees not only the cancellation of 80 contracts of employment between

the two islands, but also a wage reduction of 13.5% for the rest of the employees. Last year Metesa reduced the salary of its workers in Tenerife 5%. So far the company has failed to sit down and negotiate with trade union representatives and considers that the aim of the company is to outsource services to save costs. Although Metesa claims that, economic losses aside, workers say that work “has not diminished”.

Mainland Time Change Protest – News In Spain Should Be In GMT Brief The National Police in Fuengirola arrested the man responsible for the armed robbery at a local petrol station, within twenty four hours of the incident. The man had his face covered, was armed with a knife, and got away with two hundred and seventy euros.

Malaga Provincial Court has sentenced a man to four years in prison for attempted murder. He was in a fight in a Marbella bar, in which he stabbed his victim in the neck. The judge also imposed a restraining order, preventing him from being within five hundred meters of the victim for eight years. The Valencian Community’s furniture federation has formally requested the suspension of a contract between Feria Valencia and the company Teyoland for the installation on one of its stands of a large shopping area dedicated to homes, and has reported the alleged malpractice in terms of competition, of the Fairs institution. The request was made in writing to the mayor, Rita Barberá, who is president of Feria Valencia. The federation referred to a report by the Valencia University’s faculty of rights which mentioned serious irregularities. Workers at Spain’s royal palaces went on strike for the very first time, playing their part in the protests against austerity cutbacks. The CSI-F union said the strikes on March 2829 during the Easter holidays included 500 national heritage site staff, waiters to the royal family, gardeners and palace museum staff. Among the sites affected was the king’s Zarzuela Palace and two of Spain’s most popular tourist sites, the San Lorenzo del Escorial monastery and the Valley of the Fallen mausoleum, where the late dictator Gen. Francisco Franco is buried. Spanish government figures show that the number of people registered as unemployed dropped by just under 5,000 in March, the first reduction for the month in 5 years. The Labour Ministry said that the decline showed the government’s policies are working. The scale of the task remains tough, as the number registered as unemployed stands at 5.04 million. Spanish police are investigating the death of Faucina M.A., 58, the first secretary of the Libyan Embassy in Spain. Her body was found in her home by her daughter, with signs that could mean she died a violent death. Paramedics confirmed the death and police launched an investigation, although initially it did not seem that foul play was involved because there were no indications of robbery in the home and the dead woman was known to suffer from health problems. However, the autopsy revealed that her death could indeed have been due to foul play. So far, no further details have been released in the case and the representative of the Madrid government, Cristina Cifuentes, said that she could not provide any more information because doing so could impede the investigation, although she did acknowledge that the death had occurred “under strange circumstances.” Ford plans to increase production of its Kuga SUV in its Valencia plant this year by 10%, or 8,000 vehicles, to meet increased demand, the company have announced in a statement. Ford added that it now expects to reach an annual production volume of 100,000 Kugas in Europe this year for the first time, including its Russian plant. Ford has said it expects to sell more than one million SUVs in Europe in the next six years, with SUVs accounting for 10% of all Fords sold in the region by 2016. The all-new compact EcoSport will be launched at the end of 2013, and followed by the larger, next-generation Ford Edge. O

n March 31, the clocks all over Spain went forward an hour for Daylight Savings Time – much to the disgust of Ignacio Buqueras y Bach. It’s not the concept of Daylight Savings Time that he dislikes, he is an economist and president of the Asociación para la Racionalización de los Horarios Españoles (Association for the Streamlining of Spanish Business Hours, or ARHOE)- it’s the fact that Spain is in the wrong time zone altogether.

Earlier this month, at an event in front of the clock in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol, Buqueras called upon Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy not to change the clocks this year in order to return Spain to GMT, Greenwich Mean Time. Spain ran on this time until 1942, when Francisco Franco adjusted it as a gesture of solidarity with Hitler’s Germany. France and the U.K. also switched, but the U.K. changed back after the war. ARHOE’s Joseph Collin, a Belgian entrepreneur put the idea of righting Spain’s time to a recent gathering of Barcelona business people: “The Greenwich meridian is crossing Spain, and nobody knows it. It went unnoticed then and it has been unnoticed ever since.” The Greenwich meridian cuts across Spain at the easternmost edge of the peninsula, placing Madrid in roughly the same band of longitude as London and Marrakech, but it’s an hour ahead of both cities. As a result, the Spanish sun appears to rise and set later: Except on the very longest days of summer, it never comes up before 7 am. in the western region of Galicia; in the winter it doesn’t rise until 9am - 20 minutes later than in Copenhagen. Collin became interested in the subject after coming to Spain to do his MBA and growing frustrated with the notoriously quirky rhythms of Spanish life. “I was really puzzled by this thing that we had to wait until 2 to eat our lunch,” he said. “I asked all the time, why was that? And people were giving me reasons that didn’t make sense. I knew there must be a practical reason, every habit or

ritual always has a practical origin. Well, there you have it: the time zone.” According to Collin, the time zone issue explains why everything in Spain happens later; from meal times to the scheduling of sporting events to broadcast entertainment (primetime here doesn’t start until 10 p.m.). He says the people still live according to solar time; it’s just the clocks that are out of sync. The campaign to change Spain back a time zone is just part of the platform promoted by ARHOE. With a council of advisors from business, media, organized labour, academics and the non-profit sector, the group is trying to get Spain to adopt a tighter workday, doing away with midmorning breakfast breaks and multi-hour lunches that interrupt the day and eat into productivity. According to 2011 statistics from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Spanish people work more hours per year than their counterparts in France and Germany, but are less productive. In 2006 many of Spain’s government offices started using an American/European-style workday that ends by 6 pm, with a short break for lunch, but the private sector hours stretch from 9 in the morning until 7 or 8 at night with a two or three hour “siesta”, although few people use that time for sleeping. Dinner is eaten later, at 9 or 10, and nightlife runs into the small hours. The result, according to a study quoted by ARHOE, that Spaniards sleep nearly an hour less per day than Europeans. In addition to being bad for business

and sleep health, the group argues, the current schedule also damages families by limiting the amount of quality time parents who work can spend with their children. In the world according to ARHOE, if the clocks do go back, work would start at 9, and workers could use that extra hour in the morning to get more sleep. In addition, the lunch break was shortened to just one hour, people could work less hours, possibly more productively, and finish their day at 6pm. This would allow them more quality time in their day. After 10 years of campaigning, Buqueras knows that changing an entire culture is no small feat, but in

his and ARHOE’s view, changing Spain to GMT would be a free and easy. He has made progress with the Spanish government on some issues: Its House of Representatives has created a subcommittee to study the streamlining of working hours, and the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality is also in support of the idea. But nothing official is likely to happen to the time zone issue anytime this year, and Collin admits the Madrid protest was largely symbolic. “Politicians in many places are only motivated by things that guarantee their re-election,” he said, “They have other things on their minds, especially with this crisis going on.”

Spanish nationality Law Changes

FoReIGNeRS who want Spanish nationality will soon have to undergo an “official examination” to show they have sufficient knowledge of the Spanish language and culture to ensure they can integrate into society. That is the outline of a projected law to modify the way in which people can acquire Spanish nationality, around 100,000 people per year apply and, under the current rules require, “good civil conduct and a sufficient grade of integration into Spanish society.”

This level of integration is currently measured by judges at the Civil Register in each region of the country there is a degree of variation from region to region as to what that “degree of integration” actually is. The new law, proposed by the Ministry of Justice, would do away with that variation by introducing an official exam for all of the country and would fulfill one of the programmes mentioned in the 2011 manifesto of the ruling Popular Party ahead of the November 2011 general election.

At the time the PP promised they would, “require the knowledge of the fundamental values in the (Spanish) Constitution which are the basis of our society and sufficient knowledge of the language, history and Spanish culture in order to obtain Spanish nationality.” Meanwhile, whoever requests Spanish nationality will have had to have lived in the country for a minimum period of time of between two and 10 years. The new proposal would also modify the ways in which somebody could lose Spanish nationality. The current law says this can happen if a person has used their nationality before it has been granted, if they have a military or public position for a foreign power, or if they gave false

information on their report. Under the proposed law, the Spanish government will also be able to take away Spanish nationality to someone who “for reasons vital to public order or security or the national interest.” The changes to the rules would affect, above all people from Latin America looking to take on Spanish citizenship, during 2006-2011 just over 167,000 Ecuadorians and 102,300 Colombians applied to become Spanish, followed by almost 54,000 Moroccans and 43,000 Peruvians. Most of these already speak Spanish as their mother tongue in their countries of origin. 2,425 Chinese people sought to become Spanish citizens during the same period.

Academic Slated For Homophobic Teaching SPANISh academic, Professor Gloria Casanova, has caused outrage for allegedly saying homosexuality is “curable” and that abortion following rape was “intolerable”. She allegedly told students during a class on religious ethics at Valencia’s Cardenal Herrera University, that gay people could be ‘cured’ of their sexuality. It is also claimed she denounced the right of women to seek abortions; suggested women had a duty before God to stay with unfaithful or violent husbands, and that pregnancy through rape was effectively God’s way of compensating the victim for the ordeal. “Even if your husband is unfaithful, the proof of your love is to carry on loving him with tears in your eyes, just as Jesus wept on the cross,” Professor

Casanova reportedly told her students. In defence of the reports she said: “To say it was a controversial class is exaggerated. There was lots of lively debate. Let’s not take things out of context.” It is not clear if the professor was trying to encourage debate in the class, or whether she actually believes what she was stating. However, the University defended her actions and said: “Listening, debating ideas and forming own opinions [are] a priority for us, as is cultivating a spirit of discussing and analysing”. Meanwhile, Valencian MP Esther López Barceló denounced the professor’s comments as being medieval, offensive, homophobic, sexist as well as “very dangerous”.

www.tenerife-weekly.com A team of Spanish scientists say they’ve developed a vaccine which temporarily slows the growth of the HIV virus which causes AIDS. Led by Dr. Josep Maria Gatell, they have produced a vaccine which reduces the level of HIV in patients’ blood by 90% after just twelve weeks of vaccinations.

The team at Barcelona’s Clinic Hospital has been developing the vaccine for the past five years. It’s therapeutic and aimed at treating, rather than preventing the disease. While scientists all over the world are working to develop therapeutic HIV vaccines, Gatell believes the one he and his colleagues are working on is showing great promise. His team tested the vaccine on randomly selected HIV positive patients who were being medicated with antiretroviral medicines. The aim was to discover if they could encourage the patient’s own immune system to fight the HIV. The most common form of HIV uses dendritic immune cells, to spread its infection. “With HIV the problem is that dendritic cells confront the immune system with live and viable viruses which end up destroying it.” Doctors found that by sending a deactivated virus from an HIV patient to this cell dramatically reduces the level of infection although even with reduced levels of HIV patients will still need to ensure they use protection to prevent the

risk of transmitting the disease. The problem is that this therapy isn’t permanent. After a year most of the patients

on the trial had to return to taking their antiretroviral drugs. Gatell argues the trial has shown that in principal a vaccine can be effec-

tive: “To sum it up briefly the vaccine prototype we have used in our last study in 2013 is not capable of preventing the reappearance of the

13

viral load when the treatment ends. But it reduces the reappearance of the virus between ten and fifteen times. And this is a conceptual proof that a therapeutic vaccine could work.” The vaccine has to be personally designed for each patient. The goal of the team is to develop a vaccine which is an effective cure and will enable patients to stop taking the expensive antiretroviral medicines which keep them alive. According to official statistics released by the autonomic government of Catalonia there are some 140,000 HIV positive men and women in Spain, 30,000 of them in Catalonia. The scientists at Hospital Clinic are also working on a second vaccine which aims to neutralize antibodies. In the past attempts to develop this type of vaccine haven’t been successful because the virus is so successful at mutating. But Dr. Eloisa Yuste, a former researcher at America’s Harvard University says: “Putting it in context this is a type of vaccine that has already worked for other infectious diseases that are today being used worldwide. We are already in the development stage. We have already conducted some experimental tests on animals. And in three to five years’ time we hope we will start tests on humans.” HIV and AIDS are often associated with the homosexual community. Barcelona has one largest and most diverse gay and lesbian communities in Europe. According to official statistics a quarter of the gay men in town are HIV positive.

Hide Your Money In Record Rainfall In Spain Your Mattress!!

Authorities have said that two people were killed and hundreds more were trapped after torrential Easter rain caused flooding in central Spain. A bridge in Ciudad Real, south of Madrid, collapsed when the Yeguas River, and two people in a van died trying to cross the bridge as it collapsed.

Worried that Spanish banks will go along the same route as their counterparts in Cyprus, Spaniards are wary of trusting their life savings to their country’s banking system can now buy a mattress that has a safe complete with a keypad combination lock hidden inside.

The new product, Caja de ahorros Micolchon - My Mattress Safe - went on sale three weeks ago, is the brainchild of Paco Santos, who was made redundant from Spain’s biggest mattress manufacturer three years ago and has started his own company, Descanso Santos Suenos, (DeSS). Speaking at his office in Salamanca, the 57-yearold explained his invention:”It is completely serious! We’ve sold many, many of these mattresses,” Santos said, although he refused to give specific sales figures. Customers will need to shell out some savings to buy a My Mattress Safe it sells for around 875 Euros. The com-

pany also sells bed frames, conventional mattresses and bed coverings. “I had a hunch that this new product would sell,” Santos said. “You see, we’ve got big economic problems in Spain, and people have really lost confidence in the banks.” With the help of his son who works in public relations, Santos has launched a website,

www.cajamicolchon.com, and produced several videos on YouTube to market his special mattresses. In on short video, a smiling Santos looks into the camera and declares that his company wants to “reinvent the traditional method of saving money. It turns out our grandparents had the right idea — hiding their money under the mattress!”

Over 125 people were evacuated from a camping and caravan park after the Mundo River overflowed its banks and left them trapped, and a young man was reported missing, feared dead in Valladolid, after being washed away by the raging Pisuerga River. Most of the north-central region of Castille and Leon were on red alert over the weekend due to flooding caused by the Duero River overflowing. Agencia Estatal de

Meteorologia wrote in a report on its website confirming that Spain had recorded its wettest March, with more than triple the usual amount of rainfall. The country got an average 157 mm (6.18 inches) of rain during the month, the most since 1947 records, compared with normal values of 46 mm Spain’s water reserves, used to irrigate the country’s crops during the dry summer months, are at 82% of capacity, the Agriculture

Ministry reported today. That compares with 62% at the same time a year ago. “March was extremely rainy in almost all of Spain,” Aemet wrote. “The large accumulated quantities are more due to the persistence of the precipitation than the intensity.” Temperatures were also lower and averaged 10.6 degrees Celsius (51.1 degrees Fahrenheit) in March, 0.1 degree below normal values for the month.

Ryanair Prosecuted Storm for Political Over Charity Calendar Star Pictured With

Drug Trafficker

BuDGeT airline Ryanair is being prosecuted in Spain over their 2013 charity calendar featuring female cabin crew in bikinis. Consumer groups in Malaga believe the calendar is offensive and exploits female employees. The case is set to be heard on April 30. The consumer group’s lawyer Antonio Castillo will ask the court to rule that the public use of these images is illegal.

Ryanair has complied but argues that the images are not sexist and that the members of staff portrayed had volunteered to appear. The calendar is sold on all Ryanair flights for 12 Euros with all proceeds going to the Polish TVN Foundation, which helps children suffering with cystic fibrosis. The calendar, which was launched in October 2012, sold 7,000 by November, from a total print run of 10,000. They expect to raise 128,508 Euros for the charity.

ALBeRTo Nunez Feijoo, a potential political star in Spain’s Popular Party, has defended a series of photographs depicting him with a convicted criminal, saying he had no idea of his acquaintance’s background at the time of their friendship.

This is the not the first time that Irish airline owner Michael O’Leary has landed himself in hot water about sexist business practices. In 2008, Ryanair tried to launch a transatlantic service structure along a dual-service model; low-cost economy and high-quality business seats. The unfortunate working title was “Beds and Bitches”. The video of the press conference went viral

on YouTube and received a cold public reception. And in 2012 the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) forced Ryanair to stop using an advertisement with the picture of an airline hostess in a provocative pose, with the tagline, “Red hot fares and crew.” The ASA petition, signed by over 10,000 people who complained the advert was “sexist.”

The 1995-1996 photographs of Feijoo, the leader of Spain’s north western Galicia region since 2009 and seen as one of the possible successors to Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, and Marcial Dorado were published by leading newspaper El Pais last weekend. The photographs depict the two men on-board a boat as well as getting out of a car together. According to local media, Dorado is currently serving a 14-year prison sentence for drug trafficking. “When I knew him, I knew nothing of his past, nor his

activities,” Feijoo, said during a press conference called in order to explain the photos after the opposition had demanded his resignation. “I’ve always acted within the law,” he said, adding that “there is neither a close and deep friendship, nor a direct relationship” between himself and Dorado anymore. “If I’d had the slightest doubt that I may have done something illegal during my professional career, as a civil servant or politician, I would clearly be in a delicate situation. That is

not the case,” he said. Feijoo said he had informed Prime Minister Rajoy of the photographs and their planned publication and that the premier had asked him to explain himself. The pictures have caused yet another a new media storm within the party whose credibility suffered a serious blow recently by the so-called Gurtel case, a business and political corruption scandal related to contract awards, allegedly reaching into its senior ranks.

King Juan Carlos Princess Cristina Inheritance Probe Ordered To

Spain’s main opposition Socialist Party have reported that it will ask the government if King Juan Carlos has his taxes in order following a newspaper report that he received an inheritance worth over two million euros on the death of his father.

Appear In Court

A court has named Spain’s Princess Cristina as a suspect in a corruption case involving her husband, the Duke of Palma. The court in Palma, Mallorca, said that the King of Spain’s 47-year-old daughter is to be called for questioning on April 27.

“The Socialist Party will ask the government if it knew about the inheritance and if it was declared to tax officials,” a spokeswoman for the Socialist Party group in parliament said. Several other political parties have presented parliament with written questions over the affair after centre-right newspaper El Mundo reported that King Juan Carlos received an inheritance when his father Juan died on April 1, 1993. Juan left his family 1.1 billion pesetas, the equivalent of around 6.6 million euros, to his family in three Swiss bank accounts. King Juan Carlos received around the equivalent of 2.2 million euros. Officials from Spain’s ruling conservative Popular Party have indicated it was not in favour of looking into the inheritance with Popular Party lawyer Rafael Hernando telling reporters that the issue “belongs to the

past”. The royal palace, which released a breakdown of the royal family’s finances for the first time in 2011 as part of the king’s commitment to making his household’s accounts transparent, said it was looking into the report. “We are searching for information and once we have it we will release it,” a spokesman for the royal palace told reporters. The inheritance investigation is yet another potential scandal the royal family has become embroiled in as it follows an investigation into allegations that the king’s sonin-law, Inaki Urdangarin, embezzled millions of euros of public money. Together with the corruption probe and an elephant hunting trip which the king took on Botswana last year, an unwelcome spotlight has been thrown onto the royal family’s lifestyle and fortune as Spain grapples with a record unemployment rate of 26%.

The case centres on claims that her husband, Inaki Urdangarin, and his former business partner, Diego Torres, embezzled around 5 million euros (£4.25m) of public funds to private companies they controlled. They are accused of stealing money paid by regional governments to stage sports and tourism events to the non-profit Noos Institute, of which the Duke was chairman of from 2004 to 2006. The Duke, who has so far not been charged with any crime and maintains his innocence, attempted to distance his wife and the rest of the royals from his business dealings when he was questioned in court in February. But his former business partner provided the judge

Scarlett’s Elle April Cover

Not known for being shy in front of the camera, Scarlett Johansson is looking as gorgeous as usual in a new photo spread from Elle Spain’s April 2013 issue.

Showing off her sublime posing prowess, the “Lost in Translation” starlet dons a few different ensembles, ranging from a cream overcoat to a pale blue tank dress. And though lately she’s been keeping a relatively low profile, Scarlett has a few new projects in the pipeline to which her fans can look forward. Ms. Johansson will be starring in a cinema near you shortly in “Under The Skin,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” and “The Avengers 2,” and she’s even rumoured to be in consideration for “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

with emails that were leaked which appeared to show that the Duke regularly consulted his wife, also a member of the board of the Noos Institute, about the organisation’s affairs. Princess Cristina is the youngest daughter of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia and seventh in line to the throne. She was a member of the Spanish Olympic sailing team at the Seoul games in 1988, she married her husband, former handball player, in 1997 and they have four children. The couple moved to Washington in 2009 when

the Duke took up the role as executive director of the US subsidiary of Spanish telecommunications firm Telefonica. They were living there when the corruption allegations first broke in the media and returned to Barcelona in August last year. The summons by Judge Jose Castro will be seen as extremely damaging to the royal family, whose popularity is waning, according to recent polls. A spokesman for the palace said: “The royal household does not comment in any way on judicial decisions.”

GUILTY

2012. Following today’s verdict, we the family of Michael Philpott, believe justice has been served.” Anthony Latham QC, prosecuting, said that people at the hospital noted that Mick Philpott was “spotlessly clean” for someone who had been caught up in a house fire. He told the court that afterwards he had sex and smoked cannabis to try to blot out the horror of what had happened: “I was finding it hard to cope,” said Philpott. “Having sex and smoking cannabis was one way of blocking it out. It was my idea, not my wife’s.” After the blaze police bugged their hotel room and a police vehicle. Mick Philpott was heard to say to Mairead: “Don’t worry, we will walk through it. I promise you that, unless you want me to blab about it ... don’t say nothing now, don’t say nothing.” In another part of the recording he is alleged to have said: “I didn’t mean to do it, on my life.” The court was told of the uncon-

ventional lifestyle at the house in Victory Road, Allenton. Mairead Philpott and Ms Willis took it in turns to sleep with Mick Philpott in his caravan on the drive. He said he preferred Ms Willis, but believed that at one time they had been one “big happy family”. The wages or benefits of both women were paid into Mr Philpott’s account. He was said to have had complete control over both of them. At times Mairead Philpott had sex with her husband and co-defendant Paul Moseley. The Philpotts also went dogging together. Mairead said it was the only time her husband gave her proper attention. He had mentioned divorcing his wife to marry his mistress but Lisa Willis lost her patience with the arrangement in Victory Road and left the home with her five children three months before the fire. On the day of the fire, Ms Willis and Mick Philpott were due in court to discuss custody of the children.

Police Statement

Derbyshire Police issued this statement on the conviction of Mick and Mairead Philpott and Paul Mosley for the manslaughter of six children:

M

ick Philpott has been sentenced to life in prison for killing six of his children in a fire at the family home. He was told he must serve a minimum of 15 years behind bars. His wife Mairead and their friend Paul Mosley were each sentenced to 17 years in prison and were told they would serve half of that term.

The trio were found guilty of six counts of manslaughter - one for each of the victims - at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday. Trial judge Mrs Justice Thirlwall told them they were all responsible for the deaths and she had “not the slightest doubt” that Mick Philpott was “the driving force”. He shook his head as the judge outlined his previous violent relationships - including the stabbing a former girlfriend 13 times. She said he used the old conviction as a way of controlling other women. Speaking about Philpott’s family situation, the judge told him: “You bark orders and they obey. You were the kingpin.” Mick Philpott stared straight ahead as his guilty verdict was read out, two days before sentencing, but when his wife was convicted he shook his head. She looked down at the floor clasping a tissue in her hands. Mosley showed no emotion as he heard the verdicts. Moments later the court was cleared because a spectator, believed to be one of Mairead Philpott’s sisters, shouted: “You murdering b******”. As he was led from the dock, Mick Philpott shouted: “Not over yet, mate!” The 56-year-old had attempted to frame his ex-mistress and win custody of his other children when he set

the fire, the court heard. Lisa Willis, 28, had left the house with her five children and the Philpotts wanted them back. But the jury at Nottingham Crown Court was told “the plan went horribly wrong”. Five of the children, who died of smoke inhalation as they slept, were Mick and Mairead Philpott’s; Jade, 10; John, nine; Jack, eight; Jesse, six; and Jayden, who was five. Duwayne, 13, who was Mairead Philpott’s son from a previous relationship, died in hospital three days later. Paul Mosley told friends they had “actually rehearsed” the fire six weeks earlier and the plan was for him to rescue the children. He would break in the back door while the Philpotts were at the front on the house. The jury heard a disturbing and chaotic 999 call made by the Philpotts. Mick Philpott was heard to say: “I can’t get in.” He had tried to punch and smash his way through an upstairs window, but had been beaten back by the smoke. While it was being played, he said: “I

can’t listen to it.” He tried to leave the dock but he was stopped by prison guards and sat sobbing with his head in his hands. As the bodies were being carried from the house, Mick Philpott immediately began to blame Ms Willis, who he had earlier reported to police for threatening him and his family. Samantha Shallow, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “The fire was started as a result of a plan between the three of them to turn family court proceedings in Mr Philpott’s favour. It was a plan that went disastrously and tragically wrong. Amid all the details of the defendants’ personal lives that have come out in court, it should not be forgotten that at the heart of this case were the deaths of six innocent children.” In a statement read by police on the steps of Nottingham Crown Court, Mick Philpott’s sister Dawn Bestwick, said: “My family and I have attended court each and every day and listened objectively to all the evidence in this trial to understand what happened to our six beautiful children on May 11

Three people have been found guilty of the manslaughter of six children in a fire in Derby last May. Mick and Mairead Philpott and Paul Mosley were found guilty of causing the deaths of Duwayne, Jade, John, Jack, Jesse and Jayden. Speaking at the end of the seven week trial at Nottingham Crown Court Assistant Chief Constable Steve Cotterill said: “The jury has clearly taken their deliberations extremely seriously to arrive at this verdict. “Officers and police staff from Derbyshire Constabulary and the East Midlands Major Crime Unit have worked tirelessly with the CPS on this investigation during the last 10 months. “This has to be one of, if not the most upsetting cases any of us has ever investigated. “This is a shocking case for everyone involved. Six young children lost their lives needlessly in a fire and all our efforts have been focussed on getting justice for those children. “My thoughts at this time are very much for the friends and relations of the children who have been affected by the events on Victory Road on May 11 last year. “It was a long and difficult inquiry which involved more than 100 officers and police staff at its peak. Everyone was determined to find out the truth behind this fire and who was responsible for setting it in the house.” Early suspects were arrested and eliminated from the inquiry. Officers realised that things weren’t adding up and, although it was an unpalatable thought, suspicions about Mick and Mairead Philpott grew. It soon became clear there was no evidence that anyone else had the motive or opportunity to set the fire at 18 Victory Road, Allenton, on May 11 last year. Covert recordings of the couple gave officers extra evidence to support the case against them. Petrol was found on the clothing of the couple and their friend Paul Mosley and also in the U-bend of the kitchen sink. Mr Cotterill added: “I want to thank all the people from the local community who had the courage to come forward and give evidence against the defendants in this trial. Without them we would never have been able to discover the truth. “I also want to pay tribute to the bravery shown by the firefighters, the police officers and more importantly the neighbours who tried to rescue the children. “Throughout the investigation the police have worked closely with the fire service and other partner agencies such as the local authority and health service to provide support for the remaining members of the family. “Media reporting in this case has been extensive, in the main it has been very responsible and I’m really appreciative of the efforts journalists have gone to in publicising the investigation. This has greatly assisted the inquiry and encouraged witnesses to come forward.”

Pair Jailed In Plot To Kill Joss Stone

TWo men have been found guilty of plotting to rob and kill pop singer Joss Stone. They were convicted of conspiring to rob and kill the star last summer; they were then planning to dump her body in a river.

Kevin Liverpool, aged 35, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 10 years and eight months. The sentencing of co-accused Junior Bradshaw, 32, was adjourned. Bradshaw, who has previously been detained under the Mental Health Act in psychiatric units, said he had never heard of the singer until his arrest and that he believed he was on a day out with his friend. The pair, from Longsight, in Manchester, held a deep hatred for the soul artist, the three-week trial at Exeter Crown Court heard. The pair set off from their home in Manchester with various weapons crammed in their Fiat Punto, and headed for Miss Stone’s address in Devon. However, their plan to rob and kill Miss Stone, real name Jocelyn Stoker, was fraught

with problems. They got lost around seven miles from the target and stopped to ask a postman for directions to the property in Ashill, showing him a map with handwritten notes on it, with a picture of the 25-year-old celebrity. The pair had earlier been stopped by police at the M5 Michaelwood services in Gloucestershire at 5am after their Punto crashed into metal railings and a digger. Officers thought the car was too badly damaged to be driven and left, but the pair continued on their journey. They were arrested on June 13, 2011, a few miles from Miss Stone’s home when concerned local residents, spotting their crashdamaged car, called police. The suspicious police officers discovered Bradshaw did not have a driving licence and arrested him. They then searched the car and found a stash of weapons, including a black-handled samurai sword, three knives, and a section of garden hosepipe, two hammers, black gloves and balaclavas. A holdall contained a metal spike, black bags and black tape. There were also printouts of AA routefinder maps from Manchester to

Devon. Notes made by Liverpool, who was branded a fantasist by his own lawyer, found in the car and his flat in Manchester included references to robbing, killing and beheading the singer. Rambling handwritten diaries were also discovered, in which he highlighted the need to buy a semi-automatic gun, a silencer, infra-red sights and a “ninja” sword. He called Miss Stone “princess” and other entries referred to “Jocelyn RIP - try to get info. Rob and kill”. They also referred to her as a “She devil in flesh”. Giving evidence to the court, Miss Stone admitted there was a lack security at her home, but said she only learned of the plot against her from police. “I had an alarm but I did not really turn it on very much. I didn’t really have a lock on my door ... But I do now.” In a statement after the verdicts, Miss Stone said: “I am relieved the trial is now over and that these men are no longer in a position to cause harm to anyone.” Defending Liverpool, Philip King QC, said the plot to kill Miss Stone was nothing more than a bungled “fantasy” that was never going to be carried out.

Tom Cruise Irish Roots

Tom Cruise has been presented with a certificate to mark his Irish roots after researchers discovered Patrick Russell Cruise, one of his ancestors, had restored evicted tenants to lands just before the famine. The great-greatgreat grandfather to the actor, returned from America to Ireland after his land agent forced families from their farms in Co Westmeath in 1843.

Cruise was in Dublin for the premiere of Oblivion, his latest sci-f i movie about a veteran soldier sent to a distant planet to destroy the remains of an alien race, at the Savoy cinema, and engagements with the Irish Film Board, a pre-recorded Late Late Show interview and a visit to the Guinness brewery.

The Hollwood A-lister was honoured for his Irishness with a reception hosted by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ireland, where he was presented with the certificate. Cruise was born Tom Cruise Mapathor IV in 1962. Research commissioned by Tourism Ireland on behalf of The Gathering, a campaign to attract the Irish diaspora to visit Ireland during 2013, showed that the Cruise and Mapathor families had settled in Ireland, with roots going back 800 years. The Cruises and the Russells were old English families who refused to conform to the Protestant faith and lost their lands in Ireland when they rebelled against Oliver Cromwell. The families were united by marriage in 1766 and all subsequent relations including Patrick Russell Cruise had the doublebarrelled surname. Patrick Russell

Cruise was honoured publicly for his compassion for farmers on his land and a dinner was held in his honour in the town of Clonmellon in November 1844. Other ancestors include Cruise’s paternal great-great-grandmother Mary Pauline Russell-Cruise and his great-great grandfather Dillon Henry Mapother whose family were from Kilteevan, Co Roscommon. The Mapothers were Elizabethan settlers originally from Dorset, England. Dillon Henry Mapother moved to Louisville, Kentucky, and on his death Mary Pauline married an Irishman called Thomas O’Mara and the couple had a son called Thomas O’Mara Junior. On the death of Thomas Senior, his son took the name of his mother Cruise and his half-brother, Cruise Mapother, becoming Thomas Cruise Mapother I. Tom Cruise is his great-grandson and the fourth member of the family to carry the name. After the certificate presentation at Iveagh House, Dublin, Cruise said he had been taken aback by the extent of his ancestry: “To learn about the history of my family - it was incredible,” he said. “I knew I was Irish but I had no idea where it went and the depth of it. It goes all the way back to the 12th century.”

Rolling Stones – Madonna Returns Back In Hyde Park To Malawi

The Stones are rolling back 40 years as they confirm they will play at Hyde Park on July 6th. Last time they appeared at the London Park, they played a free concert to thousands of people. The band’s concert on July 5, 1969, was held just two days after the death of founder member Brian Jones. It was the live debut of his replacement guitarist, Mick Taylor.

“Hyde Park holds such great memories for us and we can’t think of anywhere better to perform to our UK fans this summer,” said frontman Mick Jagger. Tickets for the British Summer Time Hyde Park event, which also features Bon Jovi in the line-up, and a set covering three stages are due to go on sale today (Friday) for £95. The Mega-band also an-

nounced a full North American tour, with dates in cities including Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Chicago, Boston as well as Toronto. Keith Richards said: “We all had such a ball last year, and the energy between the band is so good, we can’t wait to get back on that stage where the Stones belong.” The band held a few concerts last year marking their 50th anniversary, though

they were criticised over the cost of tickets, some at the 02 Arena were priced at over £350. Guitarist Ronnie Wood said the preparation has cost them millions of pounds. “We feel no bad thing about ticket prices. We’ve got to make something.” The band is also headlining Glastonbury this year, playing the festival on Saturday June 29.

Madonna has visited the orphanage where she adopted one of her Malawian children. The singer arrived in Malawi on Monday to visit projects she has helped with. She was welcomed with song and dance from children at the Home of Hope, where she adopted David Banda in 2006.

The Pop Star said she was pleased to visit the orphanage, in the western district of Mchinji near the Zambian border. “I’m happy that David is back to see his brothers and sisters,” she said. David, now eight, was with his sister Mercy James, also eight, and also adopted from Malawi, and Madonna’s biological children,

Rocco and Lourdes. The visit saw him taken to see his former crib, which has been preserved in his memory. It was not known if the family would also visit the Kondanani Children’s Village, where Madonna adopted Mercy in 2009 after a protracted court battle. Madonna and her children plan to visit a paediatrics hospital in Blantyre during her visit and another orphanage. It is not known if she is looking to add to her family by adopting another orphan. Meanwhile, the singer is trying to raise more than $5m (£3.3m) to support education for girls in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries by selling an abstract French painting she has owned for more than 20 years.

Man Walks Free After 42 Year In Prison

LouIS Taylor was just 16 when he was arrested for starting a fire at a hotel in Arizona that killed 29 people at the Pioneer hotel in Tucson in December 1970. he was locked up for 42 years, and now he has walked free after years of doubt over his conviction.

time, and bathe in serenity. Bamboo fabric is created from the bamboo pulp and is 100% biodegradable. It is also anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic; bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial and resists mould, mildew, fungi and dust mites. These properties remain intact, making it suitable for those with eczema, hyper-sensitive skin or hay fever caused by dust mite. Even better news is that bamboo fabric require less frequent washing, it needs no more than a 30˚C wash

and dries in half the time of cotton. Tumble dry low and remove from dryer as soon as it stops to avoid unnecessary creasing. The only place that actually stocks these delicious items is Antiquities Tenerife in Las Chafiras. The have stock in three different colours, soft brown, grey and aubergine and at the moment they have an offer for one bath towel and a hand towel for just 15,00 Euros. Pop in and see them and feel the difference for yourself.

“It’s a tale of two tragedies: the Pioneer Hotel fire and my conviction,” he told reporters outside the prison. Taylor, who just turned 59, faced a difficult choice in court in Tucson. He could have carried on his fight to clear his name or entered a plea and got out of prison straightaway. He chose to plead “no contest”, rather than wait another two to three years. However, the deal means he cannot sue the state for compensation, which he would have been allowed to do had he been found not guilty at a new trial. Taylor was sentenced to 28 consecutive life sentences but continually pleaded his innocence. He says he was wrongly convicted by an all-white jury, claiming that police failed to investigate other suspects. Reports at the time indicated Taylor was actually helping people escape the blaze before he was arrested later that night. Even the presiding judge expressed scepticism about the

conviction. Taylor’s lawyers believe they would have won eventually at a new trial, but the process could have taken a long time. Prosecutors, however, still believe he is guilty, but stated that they would not be able to pursue a new conviction due to a lack of evidence and living witnesses.

The hotel fire was one of the worst in Arizona history with a large number of guests trapped in their rooms as the blaze took hold. Fire truck ladders were too short to reach the top floors, leading to people jumped to their deaths while others burned in their rooms. Most of the victims died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Tarantula The Size Of A Human Face Scientists have found an enormous, previously undiscovered, species of venomous spider in a remote Sri Lankan village. And it is as big as a human face. The new species was found in the war-torn north of the South Asian country by scientists from Sri Lanka’s Biodiversity Education and Research (BER) organisation.

Its legs, which have unique bright yellow markings, reach a massive 20cm (eight inches). The arachnid also has a distinctive pink band around its body. It has been named Poecilotheria rajaei, in recognition of a police officer called Michael Rajakumar Purajah who took the

research team through a hazardous jungle overrun by civil unrest in order to find the spider. The arachnid had originally been presented to BER three years ago by villagers in Mankulam who had killed a male specimen. Scientists immediately realised the dead spider was not like anything they recognized and a group was charged with finding any living relatives. The living Poecilotheria rajaei were eventually discovered in former doctor’s rooms of the village’s hospital. Ranil Nanayakkara, the co-founder of BER, said: “They are quite rare. They prefer well-established old trees, but due to deforestation the number have dwindled and due to lack of suitable habitat they enter old buildings.”

The species is said to be related to a class of South American tarantula that includes the Goliath bird-eater, one of the world’s largest spiders. In other reports Mr Nanayakkara is quoted as saying none of the tarantulas found in Sri Lanka have bites that are deadly to humans. However, the Poecilotheria rajaei would be able to kill animals as large

as mice, lizards and small birds and snakes. Peter Kirk, who covered the discovery for the British Tarantula Society’s journal said: “Ranil has been working on these spiders since 2009 out in Sri Lanka and this is the first of what is thought to be a number of new species he has discovered in what was previously the inacces-

21

sible northern region of the island. It demonstrates that wildlife continues to survive whilst we are in the throes of conflict and that they can adapt to its changing environment - but also highlights that we risk destroying the habitats of species new to science and condemning them to extinction before they are even discovered.”

Chinese Miles Per Gallon Hangover Myth Revealed

A drunken man found himself dangling 30ft above the ground from high-tension cables after climbing up a utility pole in downtown Linfen, in north China’s Shanxi Province.

The man moved along the cables for 15 minutes, unaware of the danger, while a firefighter climbed up the pole to persuade him to get down. The power supply to the area had been cut off to prevent him from being electrocuted. The man continued to the middle of two poles on the cables, then loosened his

hands and legs before dropping onto another layer of cables. As shocked onlookers watched from below, he eventually fell onto a net set up by firefighters. He later claimed that he drank a lot when he was in a bad mood. Medical staff said the man sustained no injuries except the excessive alcohol in his body.

There is a huge difference between official fuel economy information and vehicles’ actual performance, so says a study by What Car? Research by the consumer magazine revealed that 95.5% of cars do not match the Government’s economy figures, with average miles per gallon shortfall of 17%.

So-called city cars and superminis were the vehicle types with the biggest disparity, What Car? said. Despite often being advertised as efficient, city cars had fuel economy shortfall of 23.3%, while the difference for superminis was almost 25%. SUVs demonstrated the lowest shortfall in What Car?’s tests, coming in at 12.9% below the Government’s average. The magazine said it reviewed more than 500 new cars on real roads to get the results, in contrast to the official research which is conducted in laboratories. What Car?’s testing also revealed that some vehicles did deliver the expected miles per gallon, while others actually exceeded it. The Mazda 3 outperformed the published average miles by gallon by almost 10%, while the Nissan 370Z exceeded it

by 6.8%. The magazine said it had launched an online tool to check cars’ fuel economy following complaints from readers about their cars’ efficiency. Since the launch of the What Car? True MPG app, it been used more than one million times. “Expecting high fuel economy and getting the opposite can double a household’s fuel expense,” editor-in-

chief Chas Hallett said. “It is vitally important for consumers to buy the right car for their life.” One “misconception”, he said, was that smaller cars give better fuel economy. “But that’s not the case. If you use a small-engined car for long motorway runs every day, it will not be that economical,” he said, adding that a vehicle with a larger engine would be better.

Happy Birthday To The Mobile Phone

o

N April 3, 1973, Motorola employee Martin Cooper made the first ever mobile phone call in New York to competitor AT&T, saying: “I’m ringing you just to see if my call sounds good at your end.” The call was made on a Motorola DynaTAC, it was 9in tall, made up of 30 circuit boards, and had a talk-time of 35

minutes, which took 10 hours to recharge.

That was forty years ago, mobile phone technology has come a long way since then, years of development, new inventions, and the creation of the widely-used smartphone Now the worldwide telecoms industry generates annual revenues of £800bn and grown rapidly, based on wider choice, falling prices and a vast array of technologies. People now use their phones to access the inter-

net, social networking, maps, morning alarms, games, apps, to take photos, watch video clips, as well as talking and texting. Dr Mike Short, an expert from the Institution of Engineering and Technology says the two most significant developments in mobile phone technology have been the availability of devices and their ability to access the internet: “In the early days of mobile, consumerisation was not considered,” he said. “It was made for men in suits

in business, whereas consumerisation followed much later. And then access to the internet followed much later again.” As rival firms continue to develop their products and the pace of innovation speeds up, he believes there is a lot more to look forward to. The early days of mobile were all about voice, whereas these days it is much more about data, he said. “In future we’ll move towards fuller data services such as video - much more video to video calling, much more screens on the wall in your home,

maybe more video television downloaded, catch-up TV, that sort of thing. The cost has already fallen a long way. What tends to happen is you get more functionality per pound spent. That would include more memory, that would include more features, that would include more capability to access the internet at higher speeds. The weight has dropped dramatically already, but we’re seeing, probably this year, the first watch-based phones.” With improvements and changes made so frequently, Dr Short said it is hard to

know what exactly to expect in the next 40 years, but it is safe to assume millions more people in the world will have access to mobile phones. “It’s very difficult to predict 40 years’ time because the pace of innovation is speeding up,” he said. “I would say that we’ll all be mobile, globally, everyone will be mobile. I’d also say that we’ll be connecting many more machines via wireless mobile technology as well. The world of around seven billion devices connected today should be in excess of 70 billion connected devices in 40 years’ time.”

“The Wildest Jackson Trial Yet”

Michael Jackson’s mother, Katherine and his children are believed to be seeking £25bn, including £5bn loss of future earnings, figures which are staggering even to seasoned US legal analysts. The Jackson family is taking the promoter of his comeback tour to court, claiming tens of billions of dollars from AEG Live. The civil proceedings in downtown Los Angeles will focus on the Jacksons’ claim the company was guilty of the “negligent hiring” of Dr Conrad Murray, the physician now in prison for killing Jackson.

Media headline in the US are promising that this will be “The Wildest Jackson Trial Yet” - as the life and death of the King Of Pop gets yet another airing in court. During the trial, which is expected to last for up to nine weeks, the Jackson family are thought to be calling the Jackson’s 16-year-old son Prince, to give evidence. The teenager is expected to testify about watching his father’s last moments. Emails the Jacksons will rely on in court, electronic conversations between senior fig-

ures at AEG, have been leaked to the media. In turn, AEG argue they were not responsible for Murray or what happened to Jackson. As part of their evidence, the judge has ruled they can bring up details of Jackson’s child molestation trial. It is also expected that they will also try to show that the star had drug issues well before he even met Murray. Murray has refused to give evidence in the case while his own appeal against conviction is on-going. One of the most significant moments will come before the trial even starts: judge Yvette Palazuelous will rule on an application for live television cameras to be in court. She has refused so far but those challenging that ruling say the very principle of justice for the millions who will not have a seat in court means them being able to watch it on TV. They point to the massive global television interest in the trial of Murray and the importance of the public seeing justice at work. It is an argument that holds a lot of water in the US, with decades of precedent for televising court proceedings. Palazuelous’s ruling is eagerly awaited by the media and by millions of Jackson fans around the world, many of whom still have questions about his death.

SAS Sniper In Retrial Shock

A

n ancient ring, displayed at the The Vyne in Hampshire, a National Trust property, is believed to be the inspiration for the ring that Bilbo Baggins finds in Gollum’s cave in chapter five of The Hobbit.

Sergeant Danny Nightingale was convicted of having a 9mm Glock pistol and several hundred rounds of ammunition by a court martial in November 2012. But the appeal court overturned that decision because the military judge in the original case put “improper pressure” on Mr Nightingale to plead guilty.

It did, however, allow prosecutors to consider a retrial and they have decided to do so, a new trial has been scheduled for May 1st. The Nightingale family is in shock as they believed the legal proceedings had probably come to an end. Sgt Nightingale is forbidden to speak to the media by his Army bosses, but his wife Sally is free to do so: “I think we were starting to get our hopes up that they wouldn’t actually go ahead with the retrial,” she said. “So the fact they have decided now to push along with a retrial ... has come as a little bit of a shock.” The Service Prosecuting Authority has refused to discuss the situation but have described it as a “sensitive and important case”. Since Sgt Nightingale’s original conviction Army doctors have ruled he is unfit for active service because of a brain injury sustained during a charity ultra-marathon in the Amazon in 2009. Whatever the outcome of the retrial the Special Forces soldier’s military career is over, though Mrs Nightingale says the family is getting help with his condition. She said: “He’s been given a mental health team, been given a brain injury team, they’re all helping not just Danny, but us as a family to deal with his brain injury and what happens on a day to day basis, giving him coping mechanisms, giving us coping mechanisms. So we feel we are getting support now, from that side of life. But the fact is this is leading to a medical discharge.

Hobbit Inspiration Goes On Display

It’s really sad for Danny to accept that it will be the end of his career in the army.” Sgt Nightingale has spent 11 years in the SAS and served both in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as other operations around the world. A trained nurse, he invented a battlefield dressing which is named after him. His lawyer, Simon McKay, is confident of winning the retrial: “The prosecution here are going to have to prove that Sgt Nightingale had knowledge that he was in possession of a firearm,” he said. “His defence is that he is suffering from a permanent brain injury. That resulted in him completely forgetting he was in possession and that essentially will be the issue before the court martial. My instructions are to fight the case and enter a non-guilty plea and that’s what we intend to do.” Mrs Nightingale says her husband has already had a number of job offers and that the family “will just move on”

Inscribed in Latin “Senicianus live well in God.” and inset with an image of Venus, and containing 12g of gold, the ring had been almost forgotten about, but a new display in partnership with the Tolkien Society gives it pride of place in a revolving display unit telling the story of the ring. An exhibition at the stately home, explores the connection between the Roman ring and author JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogy. As property manager, Dave Green, explains: “There’s more to the story than the ring – an iron-age site with ancient mine workings known as ‘the Dwarf’s Hill’, a curse on the thief who stole the ring, and a strong link to Tolkien himself.” It is thought Tolkien knew about the curse surrounding the ring, and was researching the subject two years before he began work on The Hobbit, which was published in 1937. The ring was in the collection of the Chute family for

centuries before the house came to the National Trust in the 1930s. Dave Green said: “I was looking for the ring to show a visitor, and I walked right past the case with it – that’s when I decided we really had to make more of this amazing thing.” There are no details of exactly when the ring was found, but historians assume a farmer sold it to the wealthy family at The Vyne. Decades later the final part to the ring story fell into place. In Lydney in Gloucestershire a tablet was found at the Roman site – the Dwarf’s Hill. The tablet was inscribed: “Among those who bear the name of Senicianus to none grant health until he bring back the ring to the temple of Nodens.” It seems that the ring had been stolen and the thief had got as far as Silchester. The ring is now on display with a first edition of The

Hobbit and a copy of the curse. The ring has also influenced the gardens at the National Trust property. A long abandoned area of walled garden has been transformed into the Hidden Realm – an adventure play area whose design is based on the fantasy landscapes of Tolkien’s Middle Earth.

ichard Griffiths, best known for his roles in The History Boys, Withnail & I and Pie In The Sky, has died. Aged 65, he died from complications following heart surgery at the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire. Born in Thornaby-on-Tees in North Yorkshire in 1947, Griffiths established himself as a much-loved character actor in films and television series for over five decades. His best known roles included his turn as the lecherous Uncle Monty in the cult 1987 movie Withnail & I, and as Hector in the film version of Alan Bennett’s The History Boys. He was introduced to a whole new generation of fans with his performances as Vernon Dursley in the Harry Potter films. Griffiths worked with some of the best Hollywood directors, he featured in Martin Scorsese’s Hugo and Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, as well as appearing in TV comedies like The Vicar Of Dibley, Ted And Ralph and Lovejoy. Between 1994 and 1997 he starred in the BBC series Pie In The Sky as detectiveturned-restaurateur Henry Crabbe. Having originally made his name on stage with Shakespearean roles including Falstaff and Bottom, he appeared last year as the Duke of Burgundy in Henry V as part of the BBC’s celebrated Hollow Crown

series. In 2008 he was awarded an OBE for services to drama. Daniel Radcliffe, who starred as

Harry Potter and also appeared alongside Griffiths in the play Equus, led tributes to the actor: “In

August 2000, before official production had even begun on Potter, we filmed a shot outside the Durs-

leys’, which was my first ever shot as Harry. I was nervous and he made me feel at ease. Seven years later, we embarked on Equus together. It was my first time doing a play but, terrified as I was, his encouragement, tutelage and humour made it a joy. In fact, any room he walked into was made twice as funny and twice as clever just by his presence. I am proud to say I knew him.” National Theatre director Sir Nicholas Hytner, who directed Griffiths in The History Boys and The Habit Of Art, said: “Richard Griffiths wasn’t only one of the most loved and recognisable British actors, he was also one of the very greatest. His performance in The History Boys was quite overwhelming: a masterpiece of wit, delicacy, mischief and desolation, often simultaneously. But that was just one small part of a career that spanned Shakespeare, cuttingedge new plays and major work in film and television.” His agent Simon Beresford said: “Richard brightened my days and enriched the life of anyone he came into contact with. On stage he allowed us to share in our own humanity and constantly question our differences. Richard gave acting a good name. He was a remarkable man and one of our greatest and best-loved actors. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and deepest sympathy go to his devoted wife Heather and his family at this sad time.”

Turin Shroud: Authenticity 3 Killed, 25 Injured Questioned In 100 Car Pile Up The Shroud of Turin has gone on display in Italy, amid new research disputes claiming that the linen is a medieval fake. The 14-footlong and 3.5-footwide cloth is kept in a bullet-proof, climate-controlled case in Turin’s cathedral, rarely open to the public. The last time was in 2010 when over two million people queued to pray before the shroud.

Pope Francis sent a video message to the event at Turin’s cathedral, but made no reference that the image on the shroud of a man with wounds similar to those suffered by Christ was really that of Jesus. Many experts stand by carbon-dating of scraps of the cloth that date it to the 13th or 14th century. However, others have suggested the dating results might have been contaminated and have called for a larger sample to be analysed. New research pur-

ports to date the linen, which some say was Jesus Christ’s burial cloth, to around the time of his death. The Vatican has sidestepped stating exactly what the cloth is; calling it a powerful symbol of Christ’s suffering but making no reference to its authenticity. “This disfigured face resembles all those faces of men and women marred by a life which does not respect their dignity, by war and violence which

afflict the weakest,” Pope Francis said in his video address. The face in the shroud conveys a great peace. This tortured body expresses a sovereign majesty. It lets a pure and calm energy shine through and it seems to say to us: ‘Trust and don’t lose hope. The power of the Lord defeats all’.” The latest display coincided with Holy Saturday, when Catholics mark the period between Jesus’s crucifixion on Good Fri-

day and his resurrection on Easter Sunday. It also coincided with the release of a book based on new scientific tests on the shroud that researchers say dates the cloth to the 1st century. The research in The Mystery Of The Shroud, by Giulio Fanti of the University of Padua, and journalist Saverio Gaeta, is based on chemical and mechanical tests on fibres of material extracted for the carbon-dating research.

Traffic in the area was backed up for around eight miles after a series of accidents began at around 1.15pm last Sunday in the southbound lanes close to Fancy Gap Mountain, southwest Virginia. Message boards along the interstate had warned drivers of severe fog in the area. Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corrine Geller said the crashes happened mostly because drivers were going too fast. The motorway was closed in both directions as emergency vehicles accessed the southbound lanes. Glen Sage, of the American Red Cross in the nearby town

of Galax, said: “This Mountain is notorious for fog banks. They have advance signs warning people. But the problem is, peo-

ple are seeing well and suddenly they’re in a fog bank.” Several vehicles also caught fire in the pileup.

Diana In Gay Malala Club Ruse To Write Her Memoirs

MALALA Yousafzai, the 15-yearold Pakistani schoolgirl shot in the head by the Taliban, is to write about her ordeal in a new book. her memoirs will be called I Am Malala and are expected to be released in the autumn.

FReDDIe Mercury convinced Princess Diana to dress as a male model in order to smuggle her into a gay bar during the 1980’s, according to Cleo Rocos memoirs.

Rocos, whose book The Power Of Positive Drinking recalls how she, Mercury and fellow comedian Kenny Everett dressed Diana in an army jacket, cap and sunglasses for a night out at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, south London. Rocos, who co-starred in Everett’s TV show, said: “When we walked in... we felt

she was obviously Princess Diana and would be discovered at any minute. But people just seemed to blank her. She sort of disappeared. But she loved it.” Rocos says she did not know whether Diana was propositioned in the bar in her guise, but adds: “She did look like a beautiful young man.” The presence of Mercury, Everett and Rocos diverted attention and Diana was able to order drinks un-noticed. The Princess of Wales died in a car crash in Paris in 1997. Mercury died in 1991 of an Aids-related illness.

As well as her shooting in October last year, the book will cover her longrunning campaign to promote children’s education in her homeland. “I hope the book will reach people around the world, so they realise how difficult it is for some children to get access to education,” Malala said. “I want to tell my story, but it will also be the story of 61 million children who can’t get education.” Michael Pietsch, executive vice president of publishers Little, Brown Book Group, added: “Malala is already an inspiration to millions around the world. Reading her story of courage and survival will open minds, enlarge hearts and eventually allow more girls and boys to receive the education they hunger for.” The book deal is reportedly worth around £2m, although Mr Pietsch would not confirm how much Malala

would be paid. Malala was shot in Pakistan’s Swat Valley by militants who said she promoted “Western thinking” and was an outspoken critic of the Taliban’s opposition to education for girls. She was flown to the UK for treatment and spent several months in hospital undergoing skull reconstruction

and surgery on her ear. She has started school in Britain since she was released last month. The book deal was confirmed a day after a teacher at a girls’ school in Pakistan was killed in a drive-by shooting. Shahnaz Nazli, 41, was shot dead 200 metres from the school in the tribal district of Khyber.

New Laws for Cosmetic Surgery

NHS medical director Sir Bruce Keogh, the man leading a review of plastic surgery, has warned that patients who have non-surgical cosmetic treatments are being exposed to “unreasonable risks”.

His report outlines of a lack of training for those carrying out non-surgical cosmetic surgery and want his recommendations put into place to ensure patients “were in safe hands”. It is believed this will mean a new law requiring everyone from beauty therapists to medically-trained doctors to have additional formal qualifications before carrying out treatments. Sir Bruce said he was worried that non-surgical procedures, including dermal fillers,

or laser treatment for wrinkles or hair reduction, make up 90% of the sector but are largely unregulated. “All too often we hear of cases that shine a light on poor practices in the cosmetic surgery industry. I am concerned that some practitioners who are giving non-surgical treatments may not have had any appropriate training whatsoever. This leaves people exposed to unreasonable risks, and possibly permanent damage. And our research has shown that the public expect procedures that are so widely available to be safe whereas they are largely unregulated. There is a clear need for better quality, recognised training for the people performing these operations. My review will make a number of

Face Transplant Man Married

Dallas Wiens, 27, the first man in the US to receive a full face transplant has married the woman he met at a support group. He received severe burns after a high-voltage wire touched his head as he repaired a church window in Fort Worth, Texas, in November 2008. He spent months in Parkland Memorial Hospital, before finally undergoing a face transplant in Boston.

He met Jamie Nash, 29, at the hospital; she was there undergoing treatment after

she suffered burns to more than 70% of her body after a car accident, in 2011. The couple were married at Ridglea Baptist Church, the same church where Mr Wiens was injured, in front of more than 150 people. “I am blessed beyond measure that you have chosen me, and I love you with all my heart, “Mr Wiens told his bride. She then said: “Things happened that I didn’t think ever could be possible for me, and you made them possible. You gave me hope, and you gave me tender love that I will always treasure.” The wedding was followed by a reception at the Flying Saucer in downtown Fort Worth.

recommendations for making sure people who choose to undergo these procedures are in safe hands,” he said. The review into the cosmetic industry, requested by Health Secretary Andrew Lansley, is due to be released later in April. It was initially launched after around 40,000 women in the UK received implants manufactured by the now-closed French company Poly Implant Prostheses (PIP), mostly in private UK clinics. The implants were filled with non-medical grade silicone intended for use in mattresses. Conservative health minister Dr Dan Poulter, said: “I am pleased that Sir Bruce Keogh’s review has been looking at what training people are getting before they perform cosmetic operations - people

27

under the care of cosmetic firms need to know that they are in medically skilled and safe hands. I await Sir Bruce Keogh’s recommendations in full, but am clear that we must ensure that people undergoing cosmetic procedures are in the hands of someone with the right skills and training. The days of cos-

metic cowboys must become a thing of the past.” Several other measures have been suggested to the review team by the public, the industry itself and patient groups; including a ban on cut-price deals, a clampdown on aggressive sales techniques and a two-stage consent process for potential

patients to allow them time to reflect before making a final decision. The ideas were released in an interim report in December but the Department of Health said at the time that the review is not bound to adopt them and can come up with its own recommendations.

Mr Sanders said his wife begged him to kill her. “I said, ‘I can’t do it honey,’” he told police. “She says, ‘Yes you can.’” Mr Sanders said he wrapped his revolver in a towel so the bullet would not go into the kitchen. “She

says, ‘Is this going to hurt,’ and I said, ‘You won’t feel a thing,’” he said. “She was saying, ‘Do it. Do it. Do it.’ And I just let it go,” Mr Sanders added. Virginia Sanders did not die instantly but passed away in hospital days later.

The videotape shows a deputy coming into the interview room and handcuffing him, then leading him out the door to be fingerprinted. “I sit here and I don’t know how I could have done that,” Mr Sanders said. “It seemed to make sense at the time.”

Veteran Spared Prison For Mercy Killing

86-year-old George Sanders, who shot and killed his ailing wife in what he claims, was a “mercy killing” has been spared a prison term. The World War II veteran of Sun City, Arizona pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to probation.

The judge could have sentenced him to over 12 years in prison. Several family members gave tearful pleas for him to be spared prison time. In a videotaped confession, he described his wife’s deteriorating health and his struggles to care for her at home. Virginia Sanders, 81, had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1969. “We loved each other so much,” Mr Sanders said. “It was a wonderful life in spite of all the hard things we had at the end.” He added: “She never wanted to outlive me and be left at the mercy of someone else.” When she convinced her husband to end her life she had been due to have her foot operated on for a gangrene infection, after which she would enter a nursing home. “It was just the last straw,” Mr Sanders said. “She didn’t want to go to that hospital ... start cutting her toes off.”

Los Imprescindibles

By Janet Anscombe www.janetanscombe.com Acantilados de Los Gigantes

T

eNeRIFe’S tourism authorities have unveiled a list of what they call “los imprescindibles” - the essentials. These are the stunning places that you just have to see, and without a visit to which no trip to Tenerife would be complete. The list includes everything from culture and breathtaking natural scenery to world-heritage towns. here it is: the only question is how one could improve on it! how many have you seen? What might you add to your own list? When are you coming back to this wonderful place to see more?!

Basílica Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria

stamps in 2008. Most associated with the worldrenowned Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife, the auditorium also offers performances of world music, jazz, dance and opera. Auditorio de Tenerife Adán Martín

Acantilados de Los Gigantes – Those cliffs. That view. The one everyone knows, and often the first spectacular sight of Tenerife on approach to TFS. These amazing vertical walls of rock rise some 600 meters out of the sea, the giants standing in 30 meters of ocean which is home to an incredible range of natural sea life. Auditorio de Tenerife Adán Martín – Better known to most as the Santa Cruz Auditorium, the building was architect Santiago Calatrava’s first performing arts project. Started in 1997 and completed in 2003, the iconic building is considered the finest modern building in the Canaries, and one of the most distinctive in Spanish architecture, being featured on Spanish

Basílica Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria – Built on the site where the original Guanche inhabitants of the islands worshipped an icon of their goddess Chaxiraxi, Candelaria basilica is dedicated to the Virgin of Candelaria, patron of the Canary Islands, the result of the Spanish conquerors’ veneration of the virgin Mary, whom the Christian invaders told the Guanches was the real divinity they had been worshipping all along. The current church dates to 1959, and is set to one side of the Dominican monastery built in the 16th century: the current hermitage dates to the 1803 after the original building was destroyed by fire. The cave where the Guanches worshipped their icon is still nearby, though the little wooden statue itself was lost during torrential rains in 1826. Next to the plaza outside the complex are the larger-than-life bronze statues of the nine Guanche Menceyes, rulers of the kingdoms of Tenerife before the Spanish arrived. Casa del Vino – the House of Wine is the old Canarian La Baranda estate dating back to the 17th century, home to its own house of wine. Now owned by the Tenerife Cabildo, it is used to promote the fantastic and famous wines from all the denominations of the island. Located in El Sauzal, one can taste and buy wines, eat in the restaurant, and visit the Vine and Wine museum.

Casa del Vino

Concerts, conferences, exhibitions and a wide range of cultural events are held there as well. Masca – in the Teno rural park, in the north west municipality of Buenavista del Norte, Masca is a tiny village set in one of the most awesome natural environments on Tenerife. Deep gorges, precipitous cliffs, tantalizing glimpses of La Gomera seemingly floating in sky in the distance, it has been declared an area of ethnographical and architectural interest. The valley has various hamlets, Masca itself being just one of them, and the road winds down through them from the mountains providing perhaps the most Masca

breathtaking views along its route in all Tenerife. It is a magnet for hikers too, who walk, or perhaps clamber is a better word, down the gorge to be met at the little beach at the ravine’s foot by boat to be returned to the modern world. Garachico – A lovely little town and port founded in 1496, it has been declared a site of Historic Cultural Interest. Garachico has some beautiful houses, convents and churches of architectural importance. Most notable are the Ermita de San Roque hermitage, the former convent of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, the El Lamero hacienda, the houses of the Marquis of Quinta Roja, Casa de Piedra, the Antigua Puerta de Tierra Park, the Matriz de Santa Ana church and the castle of San Miguel. Particularly lovely are the new harbour area, and the natural volcanic rock pools with walkways through them, a delightful place to pull a chair up to a café table and enjoy lunch. Centro Histórico de La Laguna – San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Unesco World Cultural and Heritage Site, is like stepping back in time. Its historic center is in an exemplary state of conservation, with important monuments and historic buildings. This isn’t the end of it, though, because the old town has a modern feel, perhaps because of the university life spilling over into the old streets, and those pedestrian walkways are an important shopping centre with cultural offerings wherever one looks, whether musical, theatrical or religious. Café bars abound, and the tram runs from Santa Cruz right to the point at which La Laguna’s old town starts. The city is simultaneously old and new, lively and relaxed. It is a fabulous place, and perhaps no more popular than on the pre-Christmas noche en blanco, when all the shops remain open through the night. Go along and join the incredible crowds to shop until you drop, and watch the street entertainments … just don’t expect to move fast!

La Orotava – A town of three halves! La Orotava is the town which Puerto de la Cruz served as a port, and which itself has an old and new part. The historic town retains its original center, perfectly preserved, and declared of historical and artistic interest. Among its beautiful old Spanish architecture you’ll even find a Mercadona in the form of an imperial Spanish building with no modern supermarket hoardings in sight. There are also delightful set pieces like the Ermita del Calvario, the church of San Agustín, Constitución Square – where the world-famous sand carpets are displayed – as well as the church of Santo Domingo and the former convent of San Benito Abad. Perhaps most famous of all, though, is the Casa de los Balcones, now a museum and visitor centre, and the place in La Orotava that everyone wants to see. Parque del Drago – An iconic symbol of Tenerife, the Drago tree is the main attraction in Icod de los Vinos. The famous “thousand-year-old Dragon” – probably nearer 800 but it would be churlish to argue - is one of the most important natural, cultural and historic symbols of Tenerife, if not the Canaries. Smaller, and younger, specimens abound, but the Icod Dragon tree (Dracaena draco canariensis) is thought to be the oldest in any of the islands, and stands over 16 meters tall, measuring some 20 meters around the base. It is set in a small park of endemic species with a nearby church surrounded by its own gardens containing some pretty amazing trees of its own. A little adjacent plaza offers the chance for lunch or afternoon tea in a different world. Parque Nacional del Teide – What words are there? If anything in Tenerife will strike you speechless it is the magnificent Mount Teide. Sitting at the heart of its own National Park, in the center of Tenerife, the volcano is a staggering 3,718 meters (12,198ft), making it the highest point in Spain and the third highest volcano in the world. The national park itself has an average altitude of over 2,000 meters, and is universally renowned as one of the

29

Parque del Drago

most spectacular geological and vulcanological exemplars in the world. Lizards and endemic plants are everywhere, and marked pathways allow visitors to integrate themselves fully into a primeval landscape like few places on earth. In 2007 the Teide National Park was declared a World Heritage Site. If anything is a “must” in Tenerife, this is it. Anaga Rural Park – The area occupies much of the mountainous massif of northeast Tenerife, and extends to some 14,419 hectares. It is therefore a substantial part of the Island, much of which is steeply-sloping and of exceptional beauty. There is a good network of roads and footpaths so that drivers and walkers can enjoy the stunning scenery, panoramic views, and picturesque hamlets. It is as though this is the spine of the island, and some parts of the road network see the land plummet away on either side – each of which might have its own weather system! The natural habitats of Anaga include some of the best Canary Islands ecosystems, most notably the laurel forests and juniper woodlands. It is on a par with the tertiary era Garajonay forest of La Gomera, a unique experience like nothing else Tenerife can offer. Isn’t that true of all these marvels, though? Where else in the world could one compile such a list?! Parque Nacional del Teide

Lennon Letter To McCartney To Be Auctioned

A DRAFT letter from John Lennon to Paul and Linda McCartney written at time of the breakup of the Beatles is among hundreds of historical documents being offered in an online auction. The typed, undated letter shows the deep level of animosity between the two Beatles before they finally split in 1971. “Do you really think most of today’s art came about because of the Beatles? I don’t believe you’re that insane - Paul do you believe that? When you stop believing it you might wake up!” Lennon writes.

The two-page unsigned letter, contains corrections, has a photographic logo that shows the singer and his wife Yoko Ono within a circle with their lips almost touching. It is expected to fetch $40,000 to $60,000 (£26,000 to £39,000).

Other documents up for auction include a letter from Marilyn Monroe to her mentor Lee Strasberg and US general Dwight D. Eisenhower’s heartfelt missives to his wife during World War II. Monroe’s undated and handwritten letter to her acting teacher is expected to fetch $30,000 to $50,000 (£20,000 to £33,000). “My will is weak but I can’t stand anything. I sound crazy but I think I’m going crazy,” Monroe wrote on Hotel Bel-Air

letterhead stationery. “It’s just that I get before a camera and my concentration and everything I’m trying to learn leaves me. Then I feel like I’m not existing in the human race at all.” The 58 Eisenhower letters, handwritten between 1942 and 1945, range from news of the war to the Allied commander’s devotion to his wife, Mamie. They are believed to be among the largest group of his letters to survive intact and could

fetch around $120,000 (£78,000), according to Joseph Maddalena, whose Profiles in History company is auctioning the items. Other highlights include two photo albums that Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini exchanged before War World II. 250 items are being sold by an anonymous American collector. A select number will be exhibited from April 8-16 at Douglas Elliman’s Madison Avenue art gallery. The auction is due to be held on May 30.

ROBOT JELLYFISH LAUnCHED

A 5FT WIDe robot jellyfish has been revealed by researchers in America. The lifelike invention could one day conduct military surveillance; clean oil spills and monitor the environment. It is part of a multi-university project for the uS Navy that is being led by Virginia Tech professor Shashank Priya.

The Robo-Jelly is designed to operate on its own energy for up to several months and has a silicone skin that protects the electronics inside. It moves using eight mechanically controlled arms. Researchers have been testing the device in a swimming pool and have also made smaller versions, about the size of an adult’s hand. However, the project needs a few more years of work before the Robo-Jelly can be released into the wild, according to the university.

Professor Priya said the jellyfish is an ideal candidate to mimic because they use little energy and have “a lower metabolic rate than other marine species” and can also survive in different water conditions. Other universities are also working on the $5m (£3.3m) project. The University of Texas, Providence College in Rhode Island, the University of California and Stanford University are helping with areas like optical and pressure sensors.

BEIBER VICTIM OF THE CHILD STAR CURSE?

CANADIAN musical marmoset Justin Beiber is back in the news again- for all the wrong reasons as his meltdown continues. In a month which has seen the star make headlines for everything except his music crazed twitter rants, attacking photographers, turning up to a concert 2 hours late, performing for only 20 minutes then leaving, booing audiences, pratting about in public wearing a gas mask and vowing to never step foot in the UK again- the list goes on- but his latest misadventure may leave him with more than a couple of bad headlines, a nice criminal record! Police arrived at his California residence last week after an altercation with a neighbour. According to reports, the star and his entourage had been test driving a new car at high speed through the exclusive gated residential estate in Calabasa, LA, and when a neighbour complained, the singer yelled abuse including threatening to kill him and then spat in his face

(proving what I’ve always said- nothing good comes out of that guys mouth). Despite denials from his camp, several objective witnesses have confirmed the assault occurred and the neighbour has registered a battery complaint against Beiber, and despite pleas from Beiber’s management, is not backing down and plans to pursue to the full extent of the law. Although no arrests or citations have been made yet, the police are investigating and if it ends up going to the L.A. County DA, they take spitting crimes very seriously and may well prosecute. So is this another case of too much too young? So many child stars seem unable to cope with the pressures of fame and often end up having meltdowns (Britney Spears), sad cases of addiction and abuse (Bobby Brown) and sometimes tragedy (Michael Jackson, Brittany Murphy, Cory Haim). Lord knows I’m not a fan but he seems to be on a path to self-destruction and I’d hate to see another tragic headline in the near future- maybe he should have a word with another famous Justin, Mr Timberlake also found fame at an early age yet seems perfectly grounded and in control of his private life as well as his hugely successful career. Let’s hope this latest incident scares some sense into him.

SToP PReSS

It seems my latest pet name for little Justin (musical marmoset) may have been slightly prophetic! Just after I sent the above article to my editor the lyrical labradoodle (i have got to stop this) got himself into trouble AGAIN- this time for trying to take his pet capuchin monkey into Germany without proper paperwork. Beiber was detained by customs at Munich “for quite some time” and Mally the monkey was taken into quarantine. The singer faces a fine of over £10000 as well as having to pay for the pets care. He had earlier in the week caused a stir at Poland’s Lodz airport when he decided to strip to his waist whilst walking through security. Can’t they just stick him in quarantine as well?

Who’s the new Lara?

LAST week MGM studios acquired the movie rights to the megabucks generating “Tomb Raider” Franchise, the 17 year old computer game series, which last hit our screens under Paramount studios in 2001 and 2003 respectively. Although they starred hollywood hottie and superstar, Angelina Jolie, they were generally considered a disappoint-

ment, the standout scene of Jolie’s Lara Croft punching out a huge, poorly computer generated Great White Shark had to be a low-point.

The new version is said to be based on the latest Tomb Raider game and is an origin story, chronicling the 21-year-old Croft becoming an archaeologist or “tomb raider”, and already rumours are rife about who’s playing the titular character. Hot favourite at the moment seems to be “Greys

Gillian has also moved her family, Jess (20) and Harrison (12) to Liverpool to be close to them whilst filming; “I am really looking forward to joining Hollyoaks which is going from strength to strength under Bryan Kirkwood at the moment, My real family are excited to move up to Liverpool, a fantastic city, and I’m eager to meet my new family, five hunky Hollyoaks sons who I’m sure will all be saints.” Not much has been officially announced

about her role but we do know the five offspring, in true Hollyoaks tradition, are sexy pinup sons to GTayl’s “feisty matriarch”, Sandy Ros c o e . Fireworks are guaranteed to fly!!

Thomas Beatie was born a woman and had a doublemastectomy but kept his female reproductive organs, and later gave birth to three children. Beatie was born Tracy Lehuanani Lagondino in Oahu, Hawaii. He began testosterone treatments in 1997 and had chest reconstruction surgery in 2002. He married Mrs Beatie in early 2003 and became pregnant because Mrs Beatie was unable to bear children. Mr Beatie conceived with donated sperm and gave birth to children who are now aged four, three and two. The couple eventually moved to Arizona. Maricopa County Family Court Judge Douglas Gerlach ruled that Arizona’s ban on same-sex marriages

made Thomas Beatie’s nineyear marriage invalid. Judge Gerlach said he could not approve a divorce because there is not enough evidence that Mr Beatie was a man when he married Nancy Beatie in Hawaii. The couple’s divorce plans fell apart last year when the judge said he could not find a legal definition of a man as someone who can give birth. “The decision here is not based on the conclusion that this case involves a same-sex marriage merely because one of the parties is a transsexual male, but instead, the decision is compelled by the fact that the parties failed to prove that [Thomas Beatie] was a transsexual male when they were issued their marriage licence,” he wrote in

Friday’s ruling. The National Centre for Lesbian Rights, although not involved in the Beatie divorce case, has said courts have declared marriages involving a transgender person invalid in a handful of cases across the country, but that those cases had different factual and legal issues from this case. Beatie has been interviewed by talk show hosts including Larry King and Oprah Winfrey, and won a spot on journalist Barbara Walters’ list of the 10 Most Fascinating People in 2008. His book, Labor Of Love: The Story of One Man’s Extraordinary Pregnancy features a cover image of him shirtless, sporting facial hair and holding a hand over his pregnant belly.

Egg Head Designs new Egg Carton

Gone But not Forgotten The world we live in is constantly changing. Things that we all used or needed have come and gone and, these days, they seem to disappear from use very quickly as technology develops at a more alarming rate than ever before. For me, there was something a

WATCh ouT! Another icon of our lives is about to disappear forever. over a hundred years ago, Joseph Coyle designed the first carton to help keep eggs in one piece when they were being delivered. The design was used until the 1950’s when a British designer called h.G. Bennet designed the one that we still use today. Its design has remained unchanged for over 60 years, until now. It could soon go the same way as Woolworths and cassette tapes.

Eva Valicsek, a Hungarian student has come

up with a brand new design that is potentially cheaper to make. Her concept is made from cardboard and an elastic band and it is getting interest from companies around the world. Eva said, “I designed a carton that can be flat-packed. I assembled my piece without using any glue; the carton is fixed to the base at one point.” “The eggs are held firmly in the carton thanks to the flexible rubber band and the cut out holes, you can even turn the box onto its side and the eggs will not break. It can stand lateral forces. The eggs will not roll out.” I have to say that it is always sad when an icon of our lives becomes extinct, but I love the new design!

Only Here For The Beer Do you remember Skol lager? I haven’t seen it for years. I thought that it had gone down the big beer drain along with other old favourites like “Double Diamond” and “Worthington e”.

I was wrong. Skol Lager is the biggest selling beer in Brazil. They love it so much that the company that makes it has produced a beer fla-

voured ice-cream. It doesn’t have any alcohol content, just the flavour of beer, but people are up in arms about it. It is only going to be sold in bars, but Brazilian do-gooders feel that it will attract children to alcohol. Nice to know that the loonies are not just at work in Britain, isn’t it. I remember having cider flavoured ice lollies as a kid. One of my favourite desserts was a Rum Baba. Why do so many people spend time on campaigning for

things that are a complete waste of time and energy? Toffee cigarettes and chocolate cigars didn’t make me want to smoke when I was a child. I saw them for what they were… Fun sweets. OK, some kids may be stupid enough to start smoking because they liked the sweet cigarettes, but they are far more likely to do it if their parents smoke. We live in a world where young children are bought replica guns as toys and run around shooting people for pleasure, does that turn them all into murderous devils. Why are plastic guns seen as perfectly OK for a child? It’s all a lot of huff a n d puff!

Tenerife Air Disaster

LAST week marked the 36th anniversary of the world’s worst ever air disaster. Before you read on, please remember that air accidents are extremely rare.

The accident on March 27th 1977 at Los Rodeos Airport in the North of Tenerife was a culmination of bad luck and error. So many different things came together to cause the accident, a bit like the dreadful loss of life on the Titanic For those who don’t know about the accident, two Boeing 747 passenger aircraft collided on the runway at Tenerife North Airport on Tenerife, killing 583 people. If there hadn’t been a bomb at Gran Canaria Airport, the two planes involved in the accident wouldn’t have been diverted to Tenerife in the first place. Just at the wrong time, a dense fog developed at Tenerife airport, which greatly reduced visibility. This delayed take-off by an extra 35 minutes, which meant that the dense fog had time to settle in; The fuel added more than forty tons of weight to the aircraft and this made it more difficult to get clear of the Pan Am plane when it was taking off; it also increased the size of the explosion and fire when it crashed which sadly killed everyone on board. There was no ground radar at the airport at the time of the accident and the

centre lights on the runway were not working. There were 644 people on board the two aeroplanes and only 61 survived the crash. The investigations following the accident resulted in major changes to aviation law around the world, just like the Titanic accident resulted in changes to nautical law. The investigations into the incident found that the causes were down to a lethal cocktail of pilot error, runway incursion, poor weather conditions and limitations and failures in communication

In 1978, a brand new airport was inaugurated in the South of the Island. The “Reina Sofia” airport now deals with the great majority of international flights and the North is mainly a domestic airport. The only survivor of the KLM plane had decided not to continue her journey from Tenerife. Her friends tried to convince her to get on board, but she stayed and waved them off on their journey. There are monuments to those who were on board the flights in Tenerife, Holland and in the United States.

Greenpeace Targets Australia

RAINBoW Warrior, flagship of the environmental campaign group Greenpeace, is heading up the east coast of Australia with the mining industry in their sights. It is the first visit to Australia by the third vessel to bear the Rainbow Warrior name. Activists on board the ship say mining in Queensland is helping destroy the Great Barrier Reef.

Coal exportation in the state is set to double in size over next 10 years thanks to huge demand from coun-

tries such as China and India, and environmentalists are worried that expanding mines and ports are damaging the delicate reef through increased shipping traffic, dredging to build new terminals, and the wider issue of carbon emissions from coalfired power stations. David Ritter, chief executive of Greenpeace Australia Pacific, said: “Wherever the Rainbow Warrior travels all over the world it is a symbol of hope and determination. Having the Rainbow Warrior here in Australia to confront the out-of-control coal industry undoubtedly brings a lift to a campaign that tens of thousands of Australians are already part of, tens of

thousands of Australians who say it is not OK to industrialise our Great Barrier Reef. It is not OK to tip our climate over the edge.” A delegation from Unesco visited the reef last year and said it could be listed as a World Heritage Site in danger due to the rapid increase in coastal developments. The Australian government must now report back to Unesco outlining how the reef will be preserved. Australia is the world’s leading coal exporter and, according to the Australian Coal Association, in 2009-2010 the country exported almost 300 million tons of ‘black’ coal to 33 destinations. The industry says it is do-

ing all it can to limit damage to the environment with sophisticated real time tracking of ships to make sure they are not in danger of hitting the reef as well as investing in research for carbon capture systems to limit emissions from the use of fossil fuels. Michael Roche, from the Queensland Resources Council, said the industry has also brought huge financial benefits to Australia: “The mining resources industry got

Australia through the global financial crisis. We are still at record levels of investment, bringing hundreds of thousands of jobs to Australia, directly and indirectly. So the Australian people understand how important the resources sector is, but we are with the rest of the world in wanting to protect the Great Barrier Reef, it is a truly global icon. The mining industry will no longer hold a social licence to operate if the Australian people and global communi-

ty felt we were damaging the future of the reef. We take that very seriously.” The Rainbow Warrior is scheduled to be in Australia for a number of weeks and it is believed activists are planning some direct action to publicise their concerns. Other factors are also seen as contributing heavily to the reef’s decline including rising sea temperatures and the Crown of Thorns starfish which feeds on living coral tissue.

gardening and Nature By Steve Andrews - aka Green Bard

A Rose By Any Other Name

When we think of roses most people think of beautiful flowers that grow on bushes and have a sweet perfume, but the rose family actually has many species in it that do not fit this model at all. There are some shrubs that are in the Rosaceae that grow in Tenerife that have inconspicuous blooms, no real scent and only experienced botanists would be aware that these plants were classified in this group. The Stick of Blood (Marcetella moquiniana), or Palo de Sangre to give it

its Spanish name, is a very beautiful endemic shrub that can reach 4 metres in height, though is often seen a lot shorter than this. It has reddish hairs that coat the upper parts of its stems and branches and make it very distinctive. The Stick of Blood has attractive blue-green foliage but its flowers are very small and inconspicuous. After flowering it produces clusters of dry brownish seeds that are winged so they can blow away to another location. Where it is found growing there are usually plenty of specimens of this shrub so it is a bit of a mystery as to why it is not far more widely distributed. In Tenerife it is found in ravines and on cliffs and slopes around Los Silos, Cuevas Negras and Los Realejos, as well as in the Barranco del Infierno and in Masca. There are plenty of examples of the Stick of Blood growing in borders at the top of the road leading down to Playa del Socorro on the northwest coast of the island, and in fact it is doing so well there that I have

seen it actually growing in cracks in the asphalt and concrete at the side of the road. It is often grown in parks and gardens of the Canary Islands too and can be seen in the Parque del Drago in Icod de los Vinos, but it also grows wild in La Gomera and Gran Canaria. There are four species of Bencomia (named after Bencomo the Guanche king) found in the Canary Islands. All of these shrubs are members of the rose family and are very rare. Two of them are found in Tenerife. Bencomia caudata is found on forest cliffs and in ravines in the north of the island. It has evergreen leaflets and its tiny flowers are carried in drooping inflorescences that become covered in greenish semi-globular fruits. Botanist David Bramwell, in his book Wild Flowers of the Canary Islands, says that this Bencomia species only reaches 2 metres in height and he describes it as a “small shrub”. However, whilst walking in Cuevas Negras, I found a number of specimens of this rarity in the garden of a derelict house. Several plants had developed into small trees and were 5 metres or more in height. Bramwell was contacted about my discovery and after seeing some photos he agreed they were B. caudata. He thinks that they have grown to such an exceptional size because of the fertile soil of the garden they are in. B. exstipulata is the other Bencomia species that is native to Tenerife. It is only found on cliffs high up on Mt Teide where it grows in crevices in

Rose Petal Tea

Rose Pot-Pourri

Ingredients: 3 cups of white sugar ¾ cup of water 3-4 cups of rose petals 1-2 tablespoons of lemon juice Place all the ingredients in an earthenware or enamel pan and bring to the boil. Stir constantly until petals break down and dissolve into the liquid. Cool the tea and put into glasses or jars and refrigerate.

3 cups dried rose petals 2 cups mixed dried flowers 1 tablespoon dried lavender 1 cup mixed dried herbs: mint, marjoram, thyme and angelica (if available) 1 teaspoon cloves, ½ teaspoon ground allspice, 2 teaspoons ground orris root 5-10 drops rose essential oil

shaded rocks. Also in the rose family is the Portugal Laurel (Prunus lusitanica). It is an evergreen tree and a type of wild plum, and its tiny white flowers produce purplish-black fruit. It can be found growing in laurel forests of the north of Tenerife and can reach 10 metres in height. You probably didn’t know that the Blackberry or Bramble is in the rose family but it just so happens that it is, and in Tenerife we have our very own Canarian Blackberry (Rubus ulmifolius). I don’t know about you but I love gathering wild blackberries to make delicious jam, pies and wine. Of course, the roses we know so well can be grown in parks and gardens in Tenerife as well and I have seen some wonderful specimens here. There were red and yellow rose bushes in the part of Costa del Silencio I used to live in. As long as they had enough water they did well enough there but one of the finest displays I have seen is in the northern town of La Guancha where roses are in the shrub borders all along the main street. Roses have many uses as well as be-

ing very beautiful flowers. The petals are edible and can be eaten in salad or made into jelly or jam, The dried flowers are a traditional ingredient in pot-pourri. Many of you will remember the old advertising slogan for a brand of chocolate that told us that “Roses grow on you”. I am definitely glad that roses and their fascinating plant relations grow on Tenerife!

Blackberries

Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.

He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

You may use well-honed arguments to beat down your opponent and succeed in getting what you want. Hunter Rescues Kill’s Cub

A huNTeR filled with remorse after he discovered a Polar Bear he had shot had a young cub; he rescued the cub and took it home.

Pisces 19 February to 20 March

The desire to shop could have you visiting the mall more than once this week. Your money may be burning a hole in your pocket, encouraging you to spend even if you don’t really need anything. Money might come into your account, but it could leave just as quickly. If you don’t want problems further down the line, keep control of your cash and create a budget. Sticking to it may help you pay your bills more easily in the future. Above all, avoid impulse buys!

Aries 21 March to 19 April

The week gets off to a punchy start with a focus on your sign. You’ll be in your element and ready for whatever life brings your way. You may be motivated to pursue ambitions with focus, work hard, and make use of your drive and enthusiasm. You’re currently revitalized with the Sun in your sign and feeling confident and rejuvenated. A very passionate aspect over the weekend brings the chance of an instant attraction. If you have your sights set on someone, you’ll be eager to date him or her.

Taurus 20 April to 20 May

Complex emotional patterns could leave you feeling more vulnerable and anxious than usual. You may be haunted by vague fears that need to be faced and dealt with. The current focus on your spiritual and karmic zone suggests your dreams could be very powerful, too. Take note of any that are particularly striking because they may have useful guidance for you. It might be a time to lay low and recharge your batteries. It’s also an opportunity to reflect on your priorities and future goals.

Gemini 21 May to 21 June

Your social life is really buzzing, so get up to speed with networking, partying, and connecting with others. The more you get out and about, the more you’ll get out of life. A promising transit early in the week brings a chance for a relationship to develop that could work out well for you in the future. This person may have ideas or skills to share that could be of use later. You might be tempted by a powerful attraction that’s hard to resist.

Cancer 22 June to 22 July

After a fairly quiet time in your career, the current influences light up the sky with powerful explosions of promise and ambition in this part of your life. You seem to have a lot of energy at your disposal, so channel it into something useful. There’s a chance you may stop and change your focus, which won’t get you anywhere. Pick one goal that’s dear to your heart and stick with it through thick and thin. You might surprise yourself by how far you get with this approach.

Leo 23 July to 22 August

Travel and adventure could be on your mind, perhaps now more than ever. If you haven’t booked a break to an exotic paradise or something similar, perhaps you’ll be tempted to do so. You may find it hard to focus on your job, especially those nittygritty details or daily routines. Your mind may be filled with thoughts of faraway places and the desire to escape from your everyday life. It’s possible that a dynamic relationship may develop when you move out of your comfort zone.

Virgo 23 August to 22 September

You might have a plan that needs other people’s resources in order to bring it to fruition. Getting financing for a project may be something you’re set on. The problem could be that despite being a practical sign, you might be tempted to act on impulse where loans or credit cards are concerned. Try not to go over your credit limit or default on your obligations because you may regret it further down the line. Your love life looks very explosive, too, which you’ll enjoy!

Libra 23 September to 23 October

Relationships might be a major concern over the coming days. Your long-term partner may need more freedom than usual or may act like they’ve regressed back to adolescence. However, you may also be tempted by an instant attraction. You might need to give your lover as much space as possible for now. It could save your relationship in the future. Single? You might be prepared to consider speed dating as a way to find that special someone in an instant.

Scorpio 24 October to 21 November

You may be eager to make changes to your lifestyle, including health, job, and general daily routines. A major focus on Aries means you’ll be in an impulsive and determined mood. You might decide to start exercising regularly in order to trim and tone your body, but don’t do too much all at once. You could burn out and perhaps injure yourself. No matter what you do, pace yourself for best results. Lucrative deals and romance are possible at work.

Sagittarius 22 November to 21 December

You could be hot on the trail of fun and good times. Current influences reveal plenty of action in romance, which could massively improve your chances of finding a hot date or just enjoying yourself to the max. Early in the week you may get a chance for a lucrative deal, especially if you run your own business. Later, you could be bowled over by an attraction to someone you can hardly resist. Don’t do anything impulsively that you might regret down the road.

James Tazruk was hunting caribou near Point Lay, north Alaska; when he spotted a large bear about 90 metres away. As a native Inupiat subsistence hunter, Mr Tazruk is allowed to shoot polar bears under federal law. After taking aim with his rifle he fired, killing it instantly. But when he rolled the bear over he discovered she was a nursing sow and knew her young would be nearby. After following her tracks he arrived at a den and found a three-month old cub. He scooped up the cub, telling it: “I’m not going to hurt you ...

I’m going to take you home. Just don’t bite me.” Before making the 40-mile journey home to Point Lay he tied the legs of a pair of trousers together to make a pouch and cradled the cub in his lap against the handlebars of his snow mobile. “Every time I hit a bump, he would wake up”. The cub spent the night at the village police hall where it was given the name Kali - Inupiat for Point Lay - before being flown to Alaska Zoo. Kali was wrapped in a towel, given a quick physical and a meal of seal blubber. “He was

in a large dog kennel with a little water dish in it,” said vet Raphaela Stimmelmay. Hunters may not knowingly kill a female polar bear with cubs but Mr Tazruk insists he did not know about Kali when he fired: “It was unfortunate. I was saddened,” he said. “I did the right thing by bringing the bear back.” Kali is due to be sent to Buffalo Zoo shortly where he will be raised alongside a four-month-old cub nicknamed Luna. It is hoped that the companionship will mean neither gets too attached to its keepers.

Capricorn 22 December to 19 January

Life at home looks busy, and could also be disruptive. There seems to be a lot going on that could involve a change to the family dynamic, perhaps moving or remodeling. It’s possible that you have a lot of children keeping you active or perhaps a new and boisterous pet. You might also be eager to change certain aspects of your place in order to reflect changes to your lifestyle. If you’re single, entertaining may bring you a romantic opportunity. Will you take it?

Childs Play!

This week, I’ve found some really clever and fun ideas to share with you. Here’s some great little ideas that you can do with the kids (parental supervision essential!), to make their meals just that little bit more creative….. I’m amazed at what you can do with a few hotdog sausages, or 100 straws!

Cocktail Sausage Heads

These I think are cute and remind me of Mr Potato Head! They are great for kid’s parties; you could make an army of them on a big plate. What you need: Cocktail Sausages Mustard Ketchup Bread to serve! Method: Take a hot dog, and cut it in half. Next take a small knife, and carefully cut down from the centre about ½cm repeat the around the edge so you get a star effect. Then gently press it down, you’ve just made little legs for your sausage man! Next take a tooth pick; and score his eyes and a mouth. Sit him on a plate and drizzle some mustard and ketchup next to him, serve them with pieces of hotdog bread!

Hot Dog Pasta

Jelly Worms

If your kids adore Haribo, or even you – this is a great little idea that seems a bit stir crazy, but is definitely a great idea for a rainy day to occupy the Kids. What you need: 2 packs Raspberry jelly crystals 1 packet unflavoured gelatine 180g whipping cream 240ml boiling water 15 drops green food colouring 100 flexible straws (or enough to fill your container) Tall container (i.e. 1 empty litre carton of milk with the top cut off) Method:

Mix the Jelly and gelatine in bowl and add boiling water. Let it cool to lukewarm and then add the whipping cream and 15 drops green food colouring. Gather your straws (don’t forget to flex them out) and put them in the container. It’s important that the straws have a tight fit so the jelly stays in the straws. A 1 litre carton may be best; you will probably get longer worms since there is a tighter fit. If you have a bigger container, a rubber band around the straws is helpful. Or you could just add more straws to fill the container. Add the gelatine mixture to the straw-filled container and let it set until firm. There are multiple ways you can remove the worms from the straws. You can roll a rolling pin over the straws and squeeze them out or you can hold the straws over warm water. The worms will slip right out.

I hated pasta when I was a young wee lad, but I think that if my mother had made me this I would have loved the stuff! What you need: Tin of hot dogs or German sausages Straight uncooked Spaghetti Your favourite pasta sauce to top them with! Method:

Start by taking the hot dogs and cutting them into 3 or 4 cm pieces (if you prefer you can cut them into little discs). Take the Spaghetti and thread it through the pieces leaving a little gap between each one. I recommend about 8 strands of pasta depending on how wide your hotdogs are. You can put as many discs on the pasta as you wish. To cook it, boil a pan of water and allow the pasta to stand in the pan, don’t force it in as it will snap – just allow the pasta to bend and eventually it will all collapse into the pan. You need to check the packet for the duration of cooking for your specific Spaghetti. Once it’s ready top it with your kid’s favourite pasta sauce.

Calder spent twelve years working as PA and Co-presenter with Jeremy Kyle on various radio stations, he is now a Freelance Radio Presenter where he answers listeners´dilemmas each Sunday night on the airwaves. We are also very grateful to have him here, answering your questions and queries as part of the Tenerife Weekly team.

‘Flying Fear’ My fiancé and I are getting married in the summer. I’m really excited and can’t wait for the day. He’s trying to book our honeymoon but I haven’t told him about my fear of flying. I want to be able to go to a tropical paradise with him – we’ve never been away together – but I’m scared that I can’t. The thought of it petrifies me. Annie

You’ve got speak to your fiancé straight away! Your phobia could potentially ruin your honeymoon and your marriage in one fell swoop! I’m petrified of spiders but over the years I’ve worked hard at

coming to terms with this and overcoming it! You can do exactly the same and with your fiancés help and support there’s absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t be able to hop on that plane with a huge beaming smile on your face. Have the conversation, however hard it may be, and then speak to any one of the airlines and ask about help

with this phobia? Most of them are geared up to help people like you and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at just how easy it is to beat this thing. The worst you could do is stay quiet and hope that it will be ok because sods law dictates that really wont! Stop worrying and start attacking this constructively, you’ll be fine, honestly.

‘Drink Driving Shame’

Two months ago I was caught drink driving and lost my licence. I haven’t told my friends yet and I’m just so embarrassed. I’ve managed to

‘housemate or More?’

I bought a house a year ago and have recently got a lodger to help with the mortgage. He’s been living with me for two months and I really think I’ve fallen for him. He hasn’t said anything to me but I can’t bear it anymore and am going to have to tell him how I feel. Do you think this is wise? Jo I’m on the fence with this one to be honest. In an ideal world, you would

maintain a strictly “business” relationship with this bloke. As you’ve already allowed yourself to develop feelings though, I think you owe it to yourself and the lodger to come clean. If you say nothing now, these feelings are going to reach fever pitch at some point and you’ll end up suffering as a result. Have the conversation with him? He may be feeling the same as you after all. One

www.eyelashes-for-cars.com

thing I would suggest, if things do “happen” between you, is that you agree at the outset that any relationship that might blossom is not allowed to affect the rent he pays! Do remember though, if you give this a go and it goes horribly wrong, he will end up having to move out! Lots to consider Jo but as I said, it’s probably a bit too late to worry about the consequences now isn’t it?

persuade them to pick me up if we’re going out so far but soon they are going to want to know what is going on. What shall I do? Karen

You’ve done the crime so you’ve no choice really but to do the time. I’m not about to lecture you about how stupid you’ve been because if your

court appearance didn’t ram that point home, nothing will. Perhaps facing the shame you feel now and owning up to your close friends would go some way to helping you understand and accept the enormity of what you did? Ultimately, as with everything in life, honesty is the best policy. My advice is to get your friends together as a group and tell them what’s happened. Hearing how this has affected you will probably help them avoid making the same mistake too! Perhaps this isn’t what you wanted to hear from me? The simple fact is, it’s an honest opinion.

unhappy Slapper

I’ve got a terrible temper and if I’ve had a bad day at work I can’t help taking it out on the kids. Usually, it’s just shouting and screaming but for the past few years when it gets really bad I slap them. I know it’s wrong and I always apologise afterwards and hate myself for what I’ve done, but no matter how hard I try I just can’t stop. I love my kids and feel so guilty. Suzanne I can’t condone what

you’re doing Suzanne, you must know that but as a parent myself I do know how difficult it can be to keep your cool at times. You seem to have taken things a little too far in terms of the slapping and screaming and I would go so far as to say you are bordering on being a bully to your own kids! Speak to your GP about anger management sessions in your area. By recognising this problem you’ve shown

that you do care and understand that what you’re turning into just isn’t right. That’s a massive step forwards and you owe it to your children to carry on the momentum and get some help for your problem. You can be free of the guilt and confident that you’re being the best parent you can so long as you work on this and turn things around. It’s not impossible so long as you have the desire to change.

The Prisoners BBC 1 - Monday - 21:00 - 22:00 For the first time on British television, a new BBC One documentary series, The Prisoners, follows offenders in jail, their release, and if they reoffend, their return behind prison doors. Filmed over a year, this first episode follows a group of repeat offenders from Holloway Prison, which holds over 400 female prisoners. Jayde is just 18 but has already been in jail six times. Stuck in a cycle of

reoffending, she manages just two weeks outside before returning to Holloway. Crystal feels at home in prison; at 23 she has been a regular inmate at Holloway prison since she was 17. On release she returns to her estate, but fearing this environment will cause her to relapse, she leaves in order to address her problems. While each journey is different, nearly all share a shocking truth that many offenders feel more at home in prison than out.

Isaac Newton: The Last Magician Editor Recommends BBC 2 - Friday - 21:00 - 22:00

Recluse. Obsessive. Heretic. Isaac Newton is now considered to be the greatest genius of all-time, a great rationalist who laid the foundations for many of the scientific and mathematical breakthroughs that shape the modern world.

But this 60-minute biography, part of the BBC’s Genius Of Invention season, reveals a much more complex figure by interviewing experts and delving into his own writings and those of his contemporaries. Newton emerges as an often divisive figure, one who lived a largely solitary

life. In the secrecy of his study and laboratory, we find that he also delved into heretical religion, alchemy and the occult. Sir Isaac Newton transformed how we understand the universe. By the age of 21, he had rejected 2,000 years of scientific orthodoxy to develop his own insights through a relentless - and often dangerous – series of experiments. From his obsessions with light and gravity, to alchemy and biblical texts, Newton held no truth – or text – so sacred that it could not be questioned. His work put him at odds with fellow scientists and led to dark periods of isolation throughout his life.

Royal Paintbox ITV 1 - Tuesday - 22:35 - 23:35 Set against the spectacular landscapes of the royal estates and with contributions from Countess Mountbatten of Burma; professional working artist Sarah ArmstrongJones, daughter of Princess Margaret, speaking in her first ever interview on film; Royal Academy of Arts chief executive and secretary Charles Saumarez Smith; Royal biographers Lady Antonia Fraser (author of Mary Queen of Scots), Jehanne Wake, and Jane Ridley; Royal tour artists Susannah Fiennes and Warwick Fuller, historian Marina Warner and Lady Roberts, Librarian at Royal Collection Trust, Royal Paintbox contains

insights into The Prince of Wales’s own watercolours, and other works by members of the Royal Family past and present. Speaking about what inspires him to paint, The Prince of Wales says: “I think, you know, drawing from nature, observing from nature, is absolutely crucial. I’ve obviously been inspired by just looking. It’s usually the light, is what catches my attention. You can look at the same view over and over again and then suddenly one moment, there’s the most magical light.” The Prince recounts how, as a teenager, the great art which lined the walls of the Royal residences in which he grew up suddenly came alive to him.

Goal-Line Wins Fifa Contract

FIFA will use the GoalControl goalline technology system for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil - after it has been trialled at the Confederations Cup in June.

The German company’s camera-based, balltracking system GoalControl-4D uses 14 highspeed cameras which are located around the pitch and directed at both goals. If successful at the 16-match Confederations Cup this summer, it will be installed at the stadia hosting World Cup matches next year. Football’s rule-making panel approved goal-line technology last July. Fifa president Sepp Blatter pushed for it to be used in Brazil after England midfielder Frank Lampard’s disallowed against Germany at the 2010 World Cup. GoalControl was selected ahead of three other companies: GoalRef and Cairos, which both use magnetic fields, and British-based Hawk-Eye, another camera system considered the favourite.

Hawk-Eye is already used in tennis and cricket and its English parent company was bought by World Cup sponsor Sony Corp before it began Fifa-endorsed testing in 2011. All four systems met Fifa’s demand that a signal is transmitted to the referee’s watch within one second if a goal should be awarded. Fifa said: “While all four companies had previously met the stringent technical requirements of the Fifa quality programme, the final decision was based on criteria relating more specifically to the tournaments in Brazil. “(This included) the company’s ability to adapt to local conditions and the compatibility of each GLT (goal-line technology) system in relation to Fifa match operations. “The respective bids were also judged on cost and project management factors such as staffing and time schedules for installation. “The use of GoalControl-4D in Brazil is subject to a final installation test at each stadium where the system will be installed.”

Guns On Kidney’s time in charge of Plane Boxer Ireland has come to an end Arrested

BoXING champion Robert Guerrero, 30, was arrested after police said he tried to take a gun on a plane. The former featherweight champion and current WBC welterweight champion presented a locked gun box to a ticket agent when checking in at John F kennedy Airport in New York, district attorney Richard Brown said.

Mr Brown said the box contained an unloaded .40-calibre handgun and three unloaded magazines. Guerrero was arrested on charges including criminal possession of a firearm and later released. The gun was registered in California, where the boxer lives, but the authorities said it was not legal to carry in New York. If he is convicted, he faces up to four years in prison.

Guerrero’s representatives said he had flown back to Las Vegas where he will continue to train for a fight on May 4 against Floyd Mayweather Jr. The fight will be Mayweather’s first since he was released from prison last August where he served two months for domestic violence after attacking his exgirlfriend in front of two of their children.

The Irish Rugby Football union has announced that Grand Slam-winning coach Declan kidney will not be offered a new contract.

Kidney’s current deal ends on June 30 but his role as coach of the senior side will cease with immediate effect. The future of the 53-yearold coach has been the subject of speculation since Ireland’s lacklustre RBS Six Nations campaign, which ended with them only narrowly avoiding the wooden spoon. And the IRFU have released a statement which read: “The Irish Rugby Football Union will not be offering a new contract to Declan Kidney after his current agreement ends “The decision was made following an in-depth review process, carried out by the IRFU’s National Team Review Group.” IRFU CEO Philip Browne added: “We would like to sincerely thank Declan for his commitment to Irish rugby. “His contribution and involvement across the spectrum of Irish rugby delivered under-age, Provincial, Grand Slam and Triple Crown success, and epitomises his passion, belief and commitment to the game. “With a host of new and emerging talent at every level, we are confident of securing another world-class

coach to work with this talented and ambitious group of players.”

Immediate impact Having twice led Munster to Heineken Cup glory, Kidney was hired by Ireland in 2008 and made an immediate impact. The Irish won all their

matches in the Six Nations the following year to complete a first Grand Slam since 1948 and Kidney was named IRB Coach of the Year on 28 November. However, Ireland have now slipped to ninth in the IRB rankings, their lowest ever position, having finished second-bottom of the Six

Nations standings, with just a win and a draw to show for their efforts. The Irish will tour North America in June and Kidney’s defence coach Les Kiss has been named as the interim head coach for that trip, with Gert Smal and Anthony Foley set to act as his assistants.

Ashes 2013: England Captain Warns Australia Will Provide Tough Test

Alastair Cook has warned that Australia will still present a huge challenge in the Ashes whatever problems they seem to be having, as the England captain returns to county cricket with Essex to prepare for a huge summer ahead.

After a long tour to New Zealand, Cook was back in Essex for his county side’s pre-season media day where he said he plans to play two County Championship games before embarking on a massive summer of cricket. “It’s great to be home, it’s a bit colder here than it was in New Zealand though,” Cook told Sky Sports News. “I’ve got the first couple of weeks off but my first game is against Hampshire here on the 30th of April and then Lancashire at Old Trafford, then fingers crossed the first Test against New Zealand 16th of May. A return Test series with New Zealand and Champions Trophy campaign must be played before the Australians arrive for another Ashes battle, and Cook knows they will again provide the biggest test for England despite a troubled tour of

India which saw them whitewashed 4-0.

Massive

“Obviously the Ashes is going to be a huge part of the summer. Along with the Champions Trophy and New Zealand it’s a massive summer for us, and as a captain and player it’s a great opportunity for us to do something special. “Australia are going to be a tough side, they always are, the Ashes brings out the best in them make no mistake about that, so it’s going to be a great battle between two very good sides.” Cook was happy with England’s fighting spirit in New Zealand, but accepts they need to show much more than that if they are to beat Australia. “Overall I think if we’re honest we’re disappointed, we went over there to win the series and we didn’t do that. We didn’t play as well and we’d like to for most of the series. In the second game in Wellington we played better but in the first and third games New Zealand put us under a lot of pressure. “We showed fighting spirit to survive, took it down to the wire on the final day and we can take a lot from that because we have become a hard side to beat - but we’d like to

have played better.”

Root role

Joe Root was the big success story of the winter, and despite Yorkshire looking for him to bat further up the order for his country, Cook says it will do him good to open the batting at county level first. “I don’t think it really matters where he bats - I think the higher up he bats for us the better,” Cook added on Root. “From an England

point of view, facing new ball for Yorkshire and facing the best bowlers gives him the best challenge and hopefully he can keep improving and keep learning.” Although the international summer will unsurprisingly be occupying Cook’s mind, he is still keen for Essex to clamber out of Division Two of the County Championship this season. “The big goal for the lads is to get out of this Division Two, for

Di Canio Won’t Talk Politics

Sunderland’s new manager Paolo Di Canio has refused to talk about politics as anger over his admitted fascist beliefs grows.

His first press conference came as the Durham Miners’ Association said it was demanding the return of the Wearmouth Miners’ Banner, which is on permanent display in the Stadium of Light. General Secretary Dave

Hopper said: “The appointment of Di Canio is a disgrace and a betrayal of all who fought and died in the fight against fascism.” He added: “I, like many thousands of miners have supported Sunderland from

infancy and are passionate about football. But, there are principles which are much more important. “Our banner represents the Durham miners’ long struggle for the rights of the working class, rights which

the last three years we’ve been in Division Two and we’ve been kind of pushing for promotion but not quite getting there. “This year we want to take that one step further and get one of those automatic promotion places, we’ve certainly got the squad, some new signings as well so certainly strengthening our squad a lot and we’ve also got a lot of young players who can hopefully come on this year.”

were annihilated by fascism in Germany, Italy, Spain and Chile.” The stadium was built on the site of Wearmouth Colliery, where Mr Hopper worked for 27 years. Di Canio’s arrival over the weekend was swiftly followed by the resignation of local MP David Miliband as club vice-chairman. The 44-year-old former Swindon manager and West Ham striker admitted in a 2005 interview with an Italian news agency to being “a fascist, but not a racist”. In a statement on Monday he called talk about his political beliefs “stupid and ridiculous”. At a somewhat heated session on Tuesday Di Canio said: “I don’t have to answer any more this question, there was a very good statement from the club, (with) very, very clear words that came out from me. “I don’t want to talk any more about politics for one reason because I’m not in the House of Parliament, I’m not a political person, I will talk about only football.” When he did talk about football, Di Canio insisted his energy, knowledge and experience would help lift Sunderland away from the relegation zone. Di Canio said: “When I got the call, I felt fire in my belly. I

would have swam to Sunderland to take the job.” Some fans were ready to judge him on how he improves the club’s performance but a Facebook page called Sunderland Against Fascist Di Canio has already received more than 3,300 ‘likes’. Fan Mick Clark said: “There’s no place for fascism in football ... di Canio’s appointment disgraces a great club.” But James Hughes said: “Di Canio isn’t planning on gathering an army to suppress and cause harm to others and his interest in being here is managing a football team and fighting for survival ... survival from relegation.” On the website of supporters’ magazine A Love Supreme, Rob Johnson wrote: “Words can hardly express how sickened and ashamed I am by the appointment of Paolo Di Canio as our new manager.” Richard Parker said: “For the first time in nearly 40 years, I find myself questioning whether I can continue to support our great club in the way I have done over the years.” But Terry Reilly from West Sussex urged fans to let their new manager get on with his role “of turning round a sinking ship and judge him on his ability to motivate the team and avoid relegation”.

Aridane Leads Happy Return To Title Form Ayoze gets stuck in

Sergio & Defence on alert

A LATe goal blitz saw off party poopers Coruxo as CD Tenerife won 5-2 with Aridane grabbing a 26th birthday hat trick. But that individual display was equaled by the continuing rise of 19 year old Ayoze Perez and a blistering 30 minute show of pace and power from sub Suso.

Tenerife made their intentions clear from the off and took just eight minutes to get the scoreboard rolling. Aridane held up the ball, as he does so well, and laid it off to Ayoze, the young striker made a slick pass across to Raul Llorente and the left back finished his charge by tucking the ball in the net. Coruxo looking to break into the promotion play off pack were without injured top

scorer Pedro Vazquez and struggled to make any clear chances, when they did break through soon after the home goal Sergio Aragoneses parried a shot for his defence to clear away. Just short of the half hour visiting left back Pastoriza gave Chechu the slip and raced clear to squeeze a goal in past Sergio. Hurdling the advertising boards he clenched his fist at the home fans and earned a steady stream of abuse for the rest of his game. A strong response was needed from Tenerife but Fernando did well to repel a wave of attacks including a fine two handed save. Aridane made it a good start to the second half scoring from an astute pass by Ayoze and Llorente nearly added a third but picked the wrong side of the post for his shot. A long shot forced Fer-

nando to finger tip the ball wide and Tenerife looked well on top. A free kick to Coruxo should have posed no threat but Tenerife made a defensive wall with more holes than my socks and Atunez fired clean through it for an equalizer. Not quite as smooth as expected, time to unleash Suso as Loro went off. The former Hearts player laid claim to the right wing running at players and beating them with his close control, defender Pastoriza got plenty of payback for his earlier arrogance. An early pass just failed to reach the alert Ayoze, what a player he looked again, hungry for the ball and always looking to bring his team mates into the game. Ayoze made his name as a prolific goal scorer through the youth and reserve ranks but in his seven senior starts he has shown many other facets to his

game, he needs and deserves a goal but is so unselfish, a real diamond. A rare Coruxo attack was tipped away by Sergio who took a knock to the head and needed a change of shirt as he gave blood for the cause. Suso kept on digging away at the Coruxo defence and with Ayoze ready to snap up any half chance Yago deflected the ball into his own net to put Tenerife back in front. In a storming finish Ayoze hit the bar and Suso nipped in to pass to Aridane to make it 4-2. Tenerife and their fans

were in full flow as the game went into injury time; Suso turned on his tricks again and set up Aridane to round off his first professional hat trick, the icing on his birthday cake. That keeps the table topping lead at five points with just seven regular games remaining. When they hit top gear Tenerife are awesome to watch, they just need to iron out a few defensive lapses that are creeping in. This Sunday brings a trip to mid table Marino Luanco at 11am, televised on TV Canarias.

CD Marino Grounded At Rayo Vallecano B

The key to beating relegation has always been at least a moderate points return from away games but CD Marino crashed 2-0 to basement rivals Rayo Vallecano B in Madrid.

It was a frustrating day for Marino, after 35 minutes Dorta fouled Perea in the box and he got up to take the penalty. Keeper Alberto managed to parry the spot kick but Perea scored from the rebound. Airam headed wide for the visitors and they went in a half time a goal adrift but hopeful. Balduino spurned Marino’s best chance early in the second half; he won the ball from Gabri but launched his shot high over the bar. Then 20 minutes left Saez ran unchallenged down the right and beat the hesitant defence to make it 2-0. It could have been a heavier defeat if not for a late save by Alberto from a fierce Dani shot. This Sunday at 11 am Ourense are the visitors to Playa de Las Americas as Marino look to continue their newly found home form in a bid to get off the foot of the table.

Bad Away Day For Marlins Are Baseball Kings Again CB Canarias

Recent good form counted for nothing as CB Canarias slipped up 89-77 at Lagun Aro in San Sebastian. Defensive frailties proved costly as Gyntel Woods ran riot for the home side racking up 25 points.

It’s getting quite a habit winning the Copa del Rey, Marlins Puerto Cruz lifted the trophy after a 4-8 victory at Barcelona. That makes it five straight wins in the Spanish national competition.

Marlins outstanding pitcher Leslie Nacar was voted player of the final and Captain Ricardo Montiel was a very proud man. Marlins play home games at El Burgado just past Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz but with them being something of an outpost in the Spanish League visiting teams play two matches back to back.

The club has dominated their league for the last decade and has a vibrant youth development programme sending many young pros-

pects to the United States via their strong ties with Atlanta Braves. There are more details at the club website www. marlinspuertocruz.es

Ladies Learn The Kung Fu Key To Self Defence

Trailing just 41-37 at the half way point CB Canarias had high hopes of staging a recovery but they were punished in the third quarter and couldn’t get a foot hold in the final five minutes as the home team pinned them down

in front of their basket. Blagota Sekulic and Levi Rost showed valiant resistance with 16 points each and Fitio Propoulous was close behind with 15 points but they left themselves with too much to do as the game ticked away.

This Saturday it’s back home to La Laguna at the Pabellon Santiago Martin for the visit of Unicaja Malaga at 5pm. There will be an extra warm welcome for home player Nico Richotti who marks 100 games in the yellow vest.

Bradley And Friends Are Spinning Their Wheels In Tenerife

Teide National Park is a magnet for professional cycling teams and Team Sky are regular visitors having experienced the boost it gives their schedule. Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome and several of their team mates have just arrived for another intensive training camp on the tight testing roads of north Tenerife.

The team under their Head of Performance Tim Kerrison are based at the Parador de Las Cañadas as they prepare for a busy season ahead. This is the fifth time in the last two years that Team Sky have chosen Tenerife for their vital preparations.

Local mother Leigh Robbins knew just where to turn for self defence lessons after hearing about a recent spate of assaults in the Los Cristianos area. After starting Kung Fu classes with Lorenzo Condraschi last year she went from novice to competition runner up in Valencia in three months.

Now Lorenzo and fellow Spain team member Ivan Jovanovic are teaching self defence classes at the IES Language school gym next to the swimming pool complex in Los Cristianos. Lorenzo explained some of the finer points. “We are using a Vietnamese discipline of Kung Fu that uses a grabbing style and uses the aggressors force against them, it’s a perfect method for self defence.” Lorenzo had been teaching self defence to staff at the five Iberostar Hotels in Tenerife after competing for Spain in major championships. “This training also helps to build good fitness and body condition as well as self confidence and self esteem.” Classes will be taking place initially on Saturdays and Sundays from 6 to 7 pm but extra days may be added if the demand is there and the cost will be between 30 and 40 euros per month, again depending on class sizes. The course is for any ladies over 16, no experience or equipment is needed and it will take place at the IES gym. To enroll call Leigh on 616 688 540 or contact her at The Breeze Inn in Los Cristianos.
