This week’s The Car People Competition Had the best response yet, so many correct answers to the question; What BMW model did Jason Statham drive in Transporter?

There were actually two correct answers, Transporter 1 featured the 1999 BMW 750iL, however, in the film the car is referred to at the BMW 735iL. The BMW in Transporter 1

in El Medano, but there is still plenty to see at the centre. The week long activity culminates on Saturday 8th of June with the release of birds of prey on the Mount of Las Lagunetas in El Sauzal. Throughout the open days, which take place at 11,00am to 2.00pm and 4.00pm to 7.00pm, various talks have been scheduled; whales and dolphins (Monday, 3 June); birds (Wednesday, 5 June) and environmental volunteering (Thursday June 6), day for the centre will present a database which covers records from the last 15 years activity at the Centre, which have been computerized and are available to the public via the internet. In the last 15 years the Centre has rescued 28.156 animals of which 21.174 have

been released back into their natural habitat. Nearly 1,200 sea turtles have been rescued, 1,138 of these were Loggerhead sea turtle. The hooks on drifting fishing nets tend to be one of the causes of the problems faced by these marine reptiles, on at least on 20 occasions this has been the reason for the rescue of an animal and, although most injuries affect their necks it is often difficult to determine the nature of what has caused the injury, however it can frequently be determined that objects of enormous danger to these creatures are various forms of plastic, raffia sacks and the rings pulls from soft drink and beer cans that have been thrown into the sea by people not realising the serious consequences.

The Recovery Centre takes in around a thousand forest animals every year, plus 1,500 marine creatures, of which around 83% are successfully returned to the wild. Around 17% are either dead or cannot be freed or their injuries are so severe they cannot be reintroduced back into the wild. Arona Court 4 has issued a restraining order against an Irish man arrested for violent threats in a residential block of apartments in Las Galletas. It will oblige him to stay at least 500m away from those who denounced him until his case comes to Court. The police initially arrested the man after reports that he insulted, shouted at, and threatened with death, a couple, after meeting them in the lift, an incident that continued throughout the night outside the door to their apartment. On one of these occasions, the man apparently appeared naked, banging and kicking the door and eventually sticking a knife into it. As the couple he intimidated are his next door neighbours, the order will require him to leave his apartment in the block, but the Court considered that the incident was sufficiently grave that such a cautionary order was necessary. The prosecution meanwhile is asking for a custodial sentence of 9 months for issuing serious threats, while the defence is alleging provocation, at least in part, by the English couple. A spokesman for those who issued the denuncias said that they were relieved at the judgment.

A few extra details about the new energy certificate system which is due to come into force this week, and despite the fact that much officialdom seems to be unready. The system will be administered by the autonomous regions, which have until mid-July to finalise lists of those permitted to issue certificates. The average cost of the certificates will be 200 to 250 Euros. They will be valid for ten years, and will be required for any property being sold or rented for more than four months. Fines of between 300 and 600 Euros are envisaged for advertising which breaches the new legislation. Fines of up to 6,000 Euros are envisaged for more serious offences such as falsifying details.

The theme for the 2014 Carnival of Santa Cruz has been chosen, Cartoons won by a landslide. The voting through the official website was in the order of percentages: cartoons (41%), the sea (19%); carnivals in the world (16%), Africa (14%) and finally, the Olympics (10%). The council responsible for Fiestas, said the theme this year includes “hundreds of possibilities” to make carnival “bolder”. The “recharge your batteries” campaign now has its own multi-lingual Shine Again website, have a look at www.shineagain.com/home. It even gives a chance to win a holiday to one of the Canary Islands! And now with the accent on upmarket tourism the luxury travel magazine Condé Nast Traveller has released its own guide to Tenerife. Check out its website at http://www.cntraveller.com/ guides/europe/spain/tenerife/where-to-stay.

Ten diaz next exhibition starts on 29th June and will feature Nikki Attree, well known for her Tenerife Dogs website, and of course, more recently for her book Nobody’s Poodle. Also featuring in the exhibition will be photographic works by Ankor Ramos and Emili Bermúdez. Visit theTen Diez site http://ten-diez.com/galeria/for more info on the exhibition.

o L L o W I n G on from last week’s news that the first appeals for illegal letting are taking place, José escobedo, Santiago Saenz and Janet Anscombe who form Alotca, now has the majority of the cases, and in their opinion, the best strategy and defence. They will put all their expertise and commitment into the negotiations and hope, with good reason, for a satisfactory outcome.

I’ve been asked to stress, once again, that while all identical cases, and even those that can be argued to be identical, will be put into the class action, there are other types of cases being heard in other Courts. The situation is not a simple, black and white issue, so there is much room for confusion to be created when people have partial or unvalidated information. On a matter that is giving rise to lots of questions, I can confirm that anyone who is at the stage of appeal to the Courts with a nonAlotca lawyer can request to join the class action: they just need to instruct their lawyer to contact Tenerife Litigation in La Caleta, and the lawyers can decide between them whether the case is of a type that can be added to the action. Anyone

at that stage will already have had their appeal presented to Court and so could not switch lawyer even if they wanted to. Anyone who

is still at the stage of first phase appeal to the Government can, however, if they so wish, switch to Altoca. Please note that I say this in response to queries that I have received, and José Escobedo and Santiago Saenz want to make it crystal clear that this does not represent any sort of touting for business. Finally, anyone who is already with either Alotca lawyer need do nothing unless they wish to opt out of the class action: if their case is such that it can be added to the action, it will be added automatically unless they instruct to the contrary; if their case is different, and such that it is not appropriate to the class action, it will be defended in the Court according to the instruction already agreed. The offer of a class action with a 5,000 Euros fine for signing a document is only available to those cases which form the majority of Alotca appeals – i.e. those whose fines started at 18,000 Euros and which were reduced on first appeal to the government to 13,800 Euros. All cases in the class action must be identical, and clearly, not all are, with

some owners being fined on the basis of random inspections and/or private adverts, others for running multiple properties as a business, and yet others who have been denounced by communities or neighbours etc. As a general rule, anyone who has ended up with a confirmed fine of above 13,800 Euros will have been fined for a different type of infraction – very generally these will be for offences against the “principio de unidad de explotación e intermediación turística”, i.e. sole agent system, or multiple apartment letting. All Alotca clients who fall into the class action category will now have received, or will shortly receive, an invitation to join the class action. I can confirm the outcome one of these (different) types of cases where the appeal (not via Alotca) was rejected yesterday by the Court and the Government’s fine upheld … and with no possibility of appeal granted. By Marc Craig and Keith Freeland s many regular readers may know, I have always been fascinated with the world of the unexplained or the paranormal. In recent years the word paranormal has been closely associated with a diploma in. Angie Freeland is an experienced psychic medium and ghost hunting or haunt- both Keith and Angie are qualiings thanks to the many fied in and practice in the field of TV programmes that psychology. Clearly between the have been so popular. two of them there is a wealth of The popularity of such knowledge and experience to exprogrammes shows just plore, investigate and endeavour propose answers to some of how intrigued we all to those questions many of us are are in the world of the asking. And even better they live paranormal. It seems so in Tenerife a good part of each many of us are drawn to year. Having spent an eventful night things we can’t explain.

Since meeting and spending the night out ghost hunting (see issue 78, page 5) with Keith and Angie Freeland of Tenerife Paranormal Society (TPS) I am more convinced than ever that there is a whole world out there that we cannot explain, but is no less real than the world we live in. We just don’t have the knowledge, understanding or language to begin to truly explore this world; we are merely spectators of phenomena that we aren’t able to comprehend. Of course hauntings and ghosts are a small part of the paranormal spectrum which includes aliens, telekinesis, telepathy, reincarnation, near death experiences, out of body experiences, UFO’s, psychic ability, mediumship as well as a host of other areas including xenoglossy or the ability to speak a language we don’t know and have never been taught, and cryptozoology, the study of mythical or unclassified creatures. Basically anything we don’t understand or cannot explain gets placed in the category of the paranormal. The study of all things paranormal is the world of the parapsychologist, an area that TPS’s Keith Freeland knows well having studied the subject and received

with Angie and Keith in a deserted town sitting above Abades, I really don’t want my journey to end here, in fact I want to delve much deeper into this fascinating world of the unexplained or paranormal. So when Keith suggested we could continue to work together in Tenerife and involve the readers of Tenerife Weekly in the process, both my editor and I jumped at the chance. Tenerife, the whole of the Ca-

nary Isles for that matter, has a very long, rich and varied history which of course is a perfect hunting ground for unearthing unexplainable phenomena. There are loads of anecdotal stories and experiences we can pick up from those we know or meet including the many UFO sightings that are well known in Tenerife. I met another of TPS’s team, Peter Wing, who is the researcher behind the TPS team who spends hours online trying to find information, both historical and reported to point the team in the right direction for future investigations. He and his wife Sonia complete the four person team that make up TPS. What Peter has found, unlike England or Ireland, hunting grounds for Keith and Angie with their other team, Paranormal Investigators International, there is very little available historical information about the Canary Islands that would be of interest to the TPS team. I guess England and Ireland have more than their fair share of historic castles ripe for exploring which we, in Tenerife,

do not have. This is where you, our Tenerife Weekly readers come in. Keith and I have set up a Facebook page, “Unexplained Tenerife”, or UXT for short, specifically for our readers to give details of their experiences, be they in their own home or anywhere in Tenerife or the Canary Isles, these details can be anything, if you can’t explain it, tell us! Also if you’ve heard stories of hauntings, UFO sightings, or absolutely anything of interest, pass them on to us! The UXT team will then endeavour to investigate whatever you have reported in order to give explanations as far as we are able. Visit our page, Unexplained Tenerife and be sure to “like” it so that you will continue to receive information about the experiences we hear of and the exploits of the UXT team in investigating them. While you are on Facebook be sure to visit and like “Tenerife Paranormal Society” and “Paranormal Troubleshooters International” as well to continue to receive information on their exploits both here in Tenerife and beyond. The news gets even better. If you report your experiences and the UXT team decide to follow up and investigate your story, we will do our best to involve you in the investigation. What are you waiting for? Here is your chance to join a team of experienced paranormal investigators for an investigation just like you may have seen on TV. We have already begun compiling a list of potential investigations; (more about those in a later issue) so don’t delay! Looking forward to hearing from you through the UXT Facebook page or contact me here via email marc@tenerife-weekly.com. Sleep tight, as somebody once said!

find out this summer Whodunit? students as the ‘real’ Csi Comes to Vivo, treasure island.

T

HIS summer students can step into a simulated CSI scenario with CSI events: Tenerife, at Vivo Treasure Island in Las Americas. They use genuine forensic science to solve the mystery of a suspicious crime. Students will assume the role of forensic scientists as they investigate the ‘crime scene’ of a crime that is seemingly without motive.

Combining theory and practice, students attempt to solve the simulated crime through classroom lectures, investigative techniques and practical work. This course incorporates curricular topics as well such as English, Science, Mathematics and many more. Although the 1 week course follows the template seen in shows such as CSI, it is designed to be as realistic as possible. While the crime scene and evidence are not real, students follow the procedure of forensic scientists and conduct experiments using authentic equipment. The course aims to convey to students the reality of crime

investigation using Forensic Science. The CSI television programs, while based on fact, are principally written around entertainment and tend to glamourize the role of a forensic scientist. This course aims to show the ‘real’ side of forensic casework.’ Once the mystery has been untangled, participants analyze their results and build their case for the mini court trial, where they will present their evidence. This course will run continuously throughout the summer holidays. Each week 24 students will get the chance to put their skills to the test. Each course will last for one week: day one will feature an introduction to CSI Events: Tenerife, and the staff. There will be ice breaker games, and an introduction to forensic science. Students will learn about the tasks of a crime scene investigator and scenes of crime, and how to collate evidence. They will also learn about blood analysis and dental matching. day two’s activities will include DNA matching and Extraction of your own DNA. Autopsies – no real bodies will feature! Students will also learn about fingerprinting.

For more information please visit www.csieventstenerife.com/CSI--Summer-School.html or find us on facebook at www.facebook.com/groups/csieventstenerife/ On day three of the course students will learn about hair, fibres and blood spatter with experiments, quizzes and videos. The afternoon session consists of UV Lighting and discussions about murder tools with videos covering arson. There will also be a lesson covering toxicology. day four features a footwear session and includes how to make 3D shoe castings; students will learn about crime scene protocol and will

get to wear suits, masks and overshoes to process their very own unique simulated crime scene. finally on day five of the course, students will write a report about their case, and present it in a mini court room trial! They will also take part in a quiz covering everything they have learned. Prizes and certificates will be awarded to students who have taken part in the course.

www.tenerife-weekly.com oVeR the last few years, Cosmos, the Callao Salvaje Residents Association, have been holding an annual fiesta, or dia de la Convivencia. As the name suggests, the fiesta is designed to bring together all the people who live in Callao Salvaje, and this year, with the village finally an official part of the Adeje borough, we are delighted to be hosting it again. As in previous years the fiesta is in the Mirador, the two-tiered plaza at the bottom of the main street in the village, on Saturday June 1st, to coincide with european neighbours day which is on Friday May 31st, from 11am until 11pm.

Every year the event seems to get bigger and better, and certainly more and more of the different nationalities living in Callao Salvaje are taking part in the organisation, in sponsoring different events, and in participating during the daylong event. The day kicks off with a series of sporting competitions for kids, mini-football, table football, minibasketball, etc. The competition is open to children from the village and beyond, and as with most of the events throughout the day, there is no charge. Those taking part will go through to finals and there will be medals for first, second and third place winners, hand-

ed out at the end of the day. During the afternoon there will a foam party, a bouncy castle, and visitors such as Spiderman, SpongeBob and more are expected. Hotdogs and drinks (soft drinks, beer and wine) will be on sale all day. Throughout the day we will be selling raffle tickets for great prizes, all donated by local businesses in the village – in fact as the one charged with getting the prizes I can say that everyone who was approached was delighted to help. So there are a range of great prizes, including a week for four in an apartment in the Perla Gris, a weekend for two in the Atlantic Holiday Centre, meals for two in local restaurants, as well as vouchers and gifts a from almost all the shops and small traders in the village. And a big thank you to all of them. The Callao Salvaje Dessert Competition has become one of ‘the’ events of the day, and the number of people who vie and attempt to bribe members of Cosmos to get on the jury is enormous (just kidding). Anyone can enter their dessert, but it must be home made and there are cash and voucher prizes for the top three sweet treats.

Later on we will have a performance from the Let’s Dance School, who are based here, and are just back from Wales with their cheerleading Tenerife Tigers team where they won four first places as

well as second and third in various categories. From 7pm locally based entertainers will take to the stage, including Sally Ann Smith, Hollie Bourne, Eddie Hastings and Bleu Taylor. DJ Nitu will also be spinning

sounds of the 80s and 90s as she takes us up to the judging of the Desserts, the prize giving and a few words from the Adeje mayor, who has promised to attend, as well as members of the local council.

draft new tourism law legislative process

www.janetanscombe.com

THe Canarian government has approved clauses for the new tourism law to provide a framework within which more than 5,000 villas in the Canaries that are currently residential will be able to be used touristically; moreover, their plots will be reclassified at Government level, thus bypassing, where necessary, individual Cabildo restrictions and Ayuntamiento land usage designations. The law will also considerably reduce the “coastal

tourism spending increase

How things have changed! Last week, just four months after their launch, the event attracted around forty women and covered a huge range of businesses, including property, health, finance, fashion and hospitality and rather than use the meeting as an excuse to drink wine, eat canapés and gossip, these ladies were here for business. Carol Schleisman, Currencies Direct,

and Laura Mann, Blacktower Financial Management Group, organised the event and were thrilled with the turnout the event attracted. As the saying goes, from little acorns…. Congratulations, Vivo look forward to welcoming you back again. For more information about the group, visit the Women In Business Tenerife page on facebook.

band” for villa legitimacy: the Government had been aiming for a 500m exclusion area but this has now been reduced to 200m, and even further to 100m if in a cliff top area. Lanzarote, which is where around half of the properties affected are located, is likely to benefit especially from the measure. The final debate on the legislation is scheduled to take place on Tuesday. This is something that Alotca has lobbied actively for, and continued to negotiate about even though much of the work was carried out in the background. Although we’ll have to wait until at least Tuesday for the final detail, needless to say we are absolutely delighted with this news.

The Ministry announced that in the first four months of the year, 3,607,019 tourists visited the Canary Islands, 1.2% less than the previous year. In April 2013 alone, foreign tourists spent 820 million Euros, up 7.2% from a year earlier, with an

average expenditure of 1,047 Euros per person, up 7.9%) and 117 Euros euros per person per day, an increase of 6.0%. The Ministry attributed the good performance of the month of April to the contribution of its two main markets: the UK and Germany.

Presentation Of The Fred. Olsen Challenge De España

Sebastián García, the director general opened the event on behalf of Fred. Olsen, main sponsor of the tournament: “We are proud to be hosting this Tournament again; the hotel and the golf course are a unique showcase that projects an image of the Canary Islands and the island of la Gomera in a tourist segment that is very important to Fred. Olsen. There is no doubt that the crisis affects us all, but of all the activities proposed to promote the area, this tournament is priority number 1”.

Our goal is to continue to be leaders in the world. Specific golf tourism in the Canary Islands is not very high, only 1.2%, and we aim to improve the image of the Canary Islands at international level. Events such as this significantly improve the international positioning of the Canary Islands”. Fernando Méndez, Director of tourism of the Cabildo de la Gomera, reaffirmed the “clear

KATIe is 12 years old, underweight and suffering from a very painful condition in her hooves called laminitis. She was offered free to Live Arico PAWS as a last resort to avoid her being destroyed, as her owner could not afford to look after her any longer. We have committed to her lifetime care, and she is staying at Finca Cabuquero, the Riding Stables in Aldea Blanca, where owners Jim and Sara have kindly reduced her livery fees in recognition of our efforts to save her life.

Already the vet has been to microchip and vaccinate her, and she had to be sedated as her shoes were removed by the excellent farrier Jaime, as she was in so much pain. It is understood she was ridden from Adeje to Mount Teide and back, on the road, which has added to her problems. It will be a long haul, perhaps as long as 2 years, but we are with her every step of the way. She obviously cannot be ridden at this time. Katie has her own page on our website, www.livearico. com where we post regular updates and photos, but you are more than welcome to visit Katie from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 – 2pm, or 4 – 8pm. She loves carrots if you could take a

Since our dogs were moved last summer to the Government facility in Fasnia, we have not had our own refuge. We finance some dogs in two separate dog hotels, and rescue / rehome using a trusted network of foster carers. There was some confusion this week when a member of the public tried to leave an abandoned dog at one of the Pet Hotels we use because he was told “that is where the Live Arico dogs are now”. To clarify, we cannot accept abandoned animals at the Pet Hotels or for that matter at our charity shops. We will ALWAYS try and help with urgent cases in finding a solution, and we can put pets for rehoming on our website, but we absolutely MUST NOT return to the situation where dogs are dumped on us en masse. Please, have the decency to ASK FIRST, and we will try to help, always. Thank you. few, or the odd juicy apple. We are looking for sponsors for Katie. If you can commit to 10 Euros per month towards her fees you will receive a framed photo of yourself with Katie, a copy of which will go on Katie’s page on the website. One off donations can also be made in either of our charity shops, at the stables, or via paypal at livearico@ gmail.com. We are planning an event at the stables very soon, and will keep you posted.

forever living - pets

MoST of us are pet owners – we all love our cats, dogs, horses, rabbits – and treat them like one of the family. With this in mind, why should they not feel the benefits of the Forever Living Product range? I am not for a minute suggesting we apply the cellulite toning kit we talked about last week to Lassie just to give her a sleeker, more toned look! However, we do have a range of pet friendly products for our four legged friends.

The Aloe Vera drinking gels work in exactly the same way for our pets as they do for us! Your pet can drink the Aloe Vera Gel to help maintain their general well being and help keep them full of life. If your pet is having joint problems you need to get them on the Forever Freedom drinking gel in addition to using our heat lotion to relieve those stresses and strains. They will love you even more for it! Perhaps the “must have” pet product is the Aloe Veterinary Formula. This is a unique remedy for animals which can be used for a vari-

ety of treatments such as ringworm, equine mud fever and contaminated wounds. With stabilised Aloe Vera gel as its’ main ingredient, it is also ideally suited for pet skin problems. It contains allantoin, a naturally soothing substance to provide quick and soothing relief. It comes with a nozzle-control spray making application to any size or type of pet easy and effortless. It can also be used after bathing just to add shine and condition to your pet’s coat. After all, we do all like to look our best don’t we – so why shouldn’t your pet feel the same way! Our Aloe Hand and Face Soap is also excellent for cleaning the skin, and can be applied to surface cuts and abrasions to clean the wounds before applying the Aloe Veterinary Formula. The Aloe Hand Face Soap is also great for animals prone to skin eczema. So you see, no need for the family pet to feel left out – their health and well being can also benefit from the use of Aloe Vera. On Sunday 2 June, I will be at the Accion del Sol fundraising event taking place at the refuge from 2.00pm onwards. Come and take a look at the Forever Living products that will benefit both you and your pet.

Bangladesh Factory Mainland News In Tragedy Links With Spain Brief Mid-sized Spanish lender Ibercaja has said it has reached a deal to take over the smaller bank Caja 3, the latest of a series of mergers which have shrunk Spain’s banking system from more than 40 banks five years ago to just 15 today. Ibercaja was one of the few Spanish lenders which did seek public aid last year to cover losses after the bursting of a decade-long property bubble. Caja 3 received 407 million euros ($524 million) in European funds as part of a 41-billion-euro bailout of Spain’s financial sector. In a statement, Ibercaja said the three former savings banks which formed Caja 3 would now own 12.5 percent of its capital.

Those sentenced for gender-related violence in Spain, after doing their time in jail, will be set free but put under constant surveillance. This is one of the chief measures of the National Strategy against Gender Violence, whose basic elements were presented by Spain’s secretary of state for social services and equality, Juan Manuel Moreno, and which includes 258 measures to “isolate” offenders completely and give victims all the help possible. The plan is funded with 1.5 billion euros and will continue for four years, until 2016. The plan seeks to improve the institutional response to the abuse of females, to raise awareness of other kinds of violence against women - such as forced marriages - to train and raise awareness among the agents involved in the program. Victims will not only have access to a telephone number 016 for information and advice, but will have access to the service through a web site. 28 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa were rescued on Saturday in the Strait of Gibraltar by Moroccan police as they tried to reach the coast of Spain on five inflatable boats, the Spanish rescue service said. Officials at Spain’s Maritime Rescue service said the operation to save the migrants was launched after they were alerted by several calls for help from mobile phones with Moroccan telephone numbers. A search operation was immediately put into effect by the Spanish Red Cross boat Hermes and Maritime Rescue’s Alkaid, as well as by the Helimer 201 helicopter. Moroccan patrol boats eventually found and intercepted the migrants’ rubber boats off the coast of Morocco. Moroccan police found the first two inflatable boats with three subSaharans on each, a third carrying 10 people and a fourth with four. Soon afterwards a fifth boat was found with eight sub-Saharans aboard. The 28 migrants were taken to the port of Tangiers by Moroccan authorities. An investigation has been launched into the crash of a small plane in Spain that killed three of the four people aboard, authorities said. The pilot of the single-engine plane was seriously injured and taken to a hospital in Palma. A firefighter and a bystander suffered minor burns while trying to get the victims out of the flaming wreckage. The crash occurred in a brushy area near Marratxi, on the island of Majorca. The cause of the crash was not immediately known. Spain’s National Statistics Institute has revealed that Maria and Jose are the most common names in the country. The institute said about 7 million women in Spain are named Maria and about 2.89 million men are named Jose, Other popular names for girls are Ana, Isabel and Dolores, while the most popular boys’ names after Jose are Antonio, Juan and Manuel. Spain’s government has approved a plan to grant residency permits to foreigners who buy high-end homes, a step meant to breathe life into the country’s moribund housing market. The measure will award residency cards to those who spend at least EUR500,000 for real estate or invest at least EUR2 million in Spanish sovereign debt. Other measures would facilitate residency status to highly-skilled foreign specialists and foreign investors who would create jobs.

Spanish fashion brands like Zara and Mango are rare success stories in Spain during its economic depression. But now a series of deadly accidents at overseas sewing plants are causing some soul-searching about the cost, especially at a time when Spain’s own textile industry has been damaged by imports and outsourcing.

In the rubble of the collapsed Rana Plaza building in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where more than 1,100 garment workers died last month, investigators found order forms or clothing from Barcelonabased Mango MNG Holding SL and Spanish department store chain El Corte Inglés SA. A Spaniard, David Mayor, whose location is unknown, is listed on corporate registries as the director general of one Rana Plaza factory. Inditex SA, a 16% owner of the Zara brand and the world’s largest fashion retailer, was a customer of the Smart Export factory near Dhaka, where seven workers died in a fire in January. The accidents have triggered questioning about the costs of “fast fashion,” a trend invented by Spanish labels that constantly rotate collections to keep new styles on store racks. That quick-turnaround strategy has helped transform Inditex from a business started in a garage in the 1960’s to a global force whose founder, Amancio Ortega, is now one of the world’s richest men. Some Spanish union leaders say the success of Spanish style has done more for corporate shareholders and foreign consumers than for workers at home or abroad. “It’s very simple: They moved a lot of jobs to low-wage countries with lower work standards and now you are seeing accidents as a result,” said Montserrat López García de la Torre, secretary of international relations at Spain’s General Union of Workers. The decline in Spain’s textile and clothing industries, where employment fell to 136,000 from 243,000 in 2004, preceded the country’s broader trou-

bles, as Asian imports started replacing local production. From 2002 to 2011, around 7,000 Spanish textile or clothing companies, about 43%, closed their doors, a study by Spain’s EAE Business School found. The global success of Spain’s flagship fashion companies presents a inconsistency. In the past decade, Inditex’s global sales have grown to nearly 16 billion Euros in 2012. However, the recession at home slashed Spaniards’ per-head spending on clothing by 22% between 2007 and 2011, according to the study. Analysts argue that fast-fashion buyers are the last people to be blamed for Spain’s economic malaise or the decline

in the local textile industry. “Fast fashion depends heavily upon producing close to home,” said Angel Asensio, the head of Spanish Federation of Clothing Manufacturers. The idea, he said, is to cut down the time it takes to get merchandise from the plant to design and distribution centres located in Spain. Inditex, for instance, said that about half of its total production comes from Spain and nearby countries such as Portugal and Morocco. The number of Inditex employees in Spain increased by 46% in the seven years to 2011. Inditex also has 6,500 Spanish suppliers, which booked sales of 3 billion Euros to the fashion giant last year.

A Year Without Summer Forecast French weather channel Meteo has forecast that this summer will be the worst on record in Western Europe since 1816 – known by meteorological experts as “the year without summer”.

If you’ve been looking forward to spending your Spanish summer sunning yourself by the pool, don’t bother. France’s main weather channel has announced that there is a 70% chance of this summer being cold and wet across Spain, France, Portugal, Germany and Austria. Cold maritime fronts and weak solar activity during the winter months have not only given Spain a chillier

spring than normal, they’re also going to make the summer months unusually dreary and rainy. According to Meteo, June and July are only likely to have short periods of summer heat which will in turn bring heavy storms in August. September and October are likely to register higher average temperatures and less

rain, according to the French weather agency. The year without summer, 1816, is not an old wives’ tale. Overcast skies and cold temperatures across the northern hemisphere led to severe crop failures and food shortages in France, England, Ireland and the US during the summer months of that year.

amnesty international Concerns about spain

AMneSTY International is becoming increasingly concerned about Spain’s human rights record after observing the country during 2012. Police brutality, evictions, lack of rights for illegal immigrants and poverty, in many cases are consequences of the economic crisis and the high unemployment rate, like the increasing police brutality due to the growing number of anti-austerity demonstrations.

When a case of police brutality is reported to the authorities, Amnesty International says it’s very difficult to prosecute a police officer, in certain situations they don’t show their identification tags, as was the case when police charged through a train station last September chasing some demonstrators, causing serious disturbances for travellers. Unpopular government budget cuts are also respon-

sible for other human rights violations such as a free access to health care for illegal immigrants or increasing discretionary detentions. Other human rights violations are those related to evictions. This issue is so big that the European Justice overruled the Spanish law, and gave more power of decision to the judges. Other problems that concern Amnesty International are detentions in solitary confinement used in cases

of terrorism, which allowed the authorities to imprison someone for 13 days without medical access, or proper legal advice. Of all the problems reported to Amnesty International, the excessive use of brutal force by the police in demonstrations is what mostly concerns them. They are now working hand in hand with the national police in order to give a proper training in moral issues and human rights to the future police officers.

Eleven million euros a day were paid to Spanish senior officials, ship owners and secret agents after Britain’s ambassador in Madrid, Samuel Hoare, warned Winston Churchill’s government that the risk of Spain abandoning its neutral position in 1940 was imminent: “It may well be that Spain’s entry in the war will depend on our quick action,” telegraphed Hoare when pushing the Foreign office in London for an initial 1 million Euros. “I personally urge authority be granted without delay, and that if you have doubts, the prime minister be consulted.” “Yes indeed,” telegraphed Churchill in response. More sums were paid through an account in New York of a Swiss bank to the British ambassador. The declassified files brought to light by UK newspapers The Guardian and The Times, revealed Jose Jorro Andreo and Rasado Silva Tor-

res as two of the beneficiaries. “I cannot spend spare time to explain the position in detail,” wrote the British ambassador. He later claimed that British money was responsible for the arrest of plotters trying to persuade Spanish dictator Francisco Franco, a friend of Hitler’s, to join Germany’s side in the war. According to The Guardian, British agents made contact

with an unnamed Spanish Republican leader and with members of Spain’s Democratic Alliance. Other UK ministers persuaded the US to unblock cash for Spanish agents held in banks in New York. However, Franco seemed unlikely to join Hitler in war, having to deal with a nation torn by a three-year civil war that had led to half a million Spanish casualties.

www.tenerife-weekly.com The members of The AutistiX, a group of north London musicians, as their name suggests, all have autism, but they will not let any of their disabilities get in the way of their first international tour, which includes Spain, and recording their first album.

Luke Steels, 17, electric guitar and bass, Jack Beavan-Duggan, 18, electric guitar, and Saul Zur-Szpiro, 20, on the drums, all get together and practice at least once a week and have already played gigs including the Beatles Day in Hastings, but this will be the first time they have gone on tour. Saul’s mum, and band manager, Susan Zur-Szpiro, said: “They started producing their own music and creating these very beautiful, quite biographical songs: “It’s not about getting the sympathy reaction, they just happen to have their disabilities which makes them interesting and quirky as an act.” Lyricist Jack, wrote songs including The Good and Bad in All of Us and Hard to Reach and says music is about “writing songs and showing who I am”. Carol Povey, the director of the Centre for Autism, said: “Autism is a social and communication difficulty and affects the way people interact with other people and the world around them. Some people will have very high support needs, no language or communicative ability and challenging behaviour, right the way through to people who have very high IQs but may struggle to relate

You wouldn’t normally think of people working together like The AutistiX and I think it’s fabulous and it really blows apart most people’s expectations.” The group, who are based in Camden were joined on stage by Jack’s father John, Saul’s dad Michael and musician Jim Connelly. They played three gigs with Spanish group Motxila 21 who all have Down’s syndrome. But The AutistiX have come a long way to get there. Mrs Zur-Szpiro said: “My son could really do nothing, he was blind, he couldn’t move, he was really very low-functioning so we just took it a step at a time and he’s way beyond anyone’s expectations. He can’t dress himself, he can’t feed himself and can’t look after his own basic needs but he’s the drummer and it’s mostly learning through his auditory skills, he hears something and he knows it.” Before The AutistiX set off on tour there were a lot of things to consider including the fact that they would be relocating each day. “Change is an issue because they like the familiar and they can be thrown by anything changing”, Mrs Zur-Szpiro said. “I’m very aware of the sensitivities and so we’re doing all the major transitions during the

Towie Hits Marbella

Is Marbella ready for this? The “TOWIE Elite” have flown into the popular resort to film their Marbella special. Seven members of the ITV2 reality show’s cast arrived at Malaga Airport on a flight together. As they left the UK the gang christened themselves the “TOWIE Elite”.

Although the seven aren’t the only members of the cast who will be partying hard in the south of Spain this week as they shoot the show’s two Spanish specials. But you could be forgiven for thinking otherwise as their tweets seem to suggest they think they will be the only ones worth watching on the show, when it returns on June 2. Not-so-bright Joey recently threatened to quit unless he got a better deal from TOWIE bosses. He asked for a pay rise after becoming one of the show’s biggest stars after proposing to girlfriend Sam in Dubai during the last series. As well as musical experiences there are other benefits for The AutistiX too. The manager said: “They lack a normal peer group and this band has

been amazing in providing a social network for them, they’re the centre of each other’s lives. And there’s no drinking and drugs going on, that just doesn’t happen.” The AutistiX also have a natural ability on stage which many performers might be envious of - they do not get stage fright. Mrs ZurSzpiro said: “Sometimes they’ve performed in front of several hundred

people, but they don’t have any concept of being judged. Saul loves being up on the stage and has music in every cell of his body.” The band played in Pamplona, Durango and Getaria and when they get back to London they will be looking forward to releasing their first EP, Butterflies and Demons, which they recorded at EMI Roundhouse in February.

Illegal Immigrant Healthcare Limited

The death of a young Senegalese man from tuberculosis in Spain, following alleged lack of medical care, triggered an outcry by civil society organisations against the law passed last year that excludes undocumented immigrants from the public health system except in emergencies.

“There are cases of undocumented pregnant women and children running into difficulties getting health care at hospitals and health centres. There are quite a number of instances,” Sylvia Koniecki, the head of Andalucía Acoge (Andalusia Welcomes), an NGO that works on behalf of immigrants. Royal decree-law 16/2012, enacted Apr. 20, 2012 by the government of the right wing People’s Party (PP), stipulates that foreign women have the right to public health care during pregnancy, childbirth and the post-partum period, regardless of their legal status in the country. It also states that all undocumented immigrants under 18 receive free health care “in the same conditions as Spanish citizens,” and those over 18 receive “emergency health care in cases of serious illness or accident due to any cause, until they are medically discharged.” As a result, most undocumented immigrants have limited access to health care. U.S. photographer Annie Leibovitz has been named as this year’s recipient of the Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities.

Leibovitz, 63, famous for portraits of iconic celebrities such as Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, is one of the world’s most acclaimed contemporary photographers. Her work is characterized by a “painstaking, sophisticated staging and by a studied use of lighting that lends her photos a characteristic atmosphere,” the Prince of Asturias Foundation’s Web site said. The photographer beat international photographic cooperative Magnum Photos and British-Iranian journalist and television host Christiane Amanpour in the final round of voting. The Connecticut native studied painting at the San Francisco Art Institute and took photography classes in the evening. She began working at Rolling Stone in 1970, before finishing her studies, and became that magazine’s head of photography just three years later. As part of its fiscal austerity policies, the government of conservative Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy estimated savings of 500 million euros as a result of cancelling the health cards of 873,000 undocumented immigrants as of September 2012. But “there will be no such savings,” said Gabriel Ruiz, who is in charge of the migrants’ programme for the southern city of Málaga’s branch of Doctors of the World, an international humanitarian organisation. He said exclusion from primary health care would only mean more users coming to the emergency services “which are more expensive to provide.” Ruiz said that the immigrant population is generally in a state of social exclusion and is therefore more vulnerable to diseases propagated by overcrowding or inadequate nutrition. “Excluding immigrants from the public health system not only puts their health at risk, but also that of the rest of society because

of the possible spread of illnesses,” he stressed. The government justified the measures by claiming that undocumented immigrants were overloading the health system. But a 2012 report by the Ecology and Development Foundation (ECODES) found that Spanish citizens were principlein users of the public health system. The Málaga branch of Doctors of

vitz has become one of the most highly respected photographers in Europe and America, the jury’s minutes said. Leibovitz’s work has been featured in exhibits at museums and galleries around the world, including the Smithsonian Institute’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, where she became the first woman and second living photographer to exhibit there. “I am very happy that the Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities has recognized the work of Annie Leibovitz, a worldwide symbol of photographic portraiture,” Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado, winner of the 1988 Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts, said in a statement. The Communication and Humanities is the third of eight Prince of Asturias Award winners to be announced this year, after the Arts and Social Sciences prizes were bestowed on Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke and Dutch sociologist Saskia Sassen, respectively. The Communication and Humanities prize recognizes “the person, institution, group of people or group of institutions whose work or re-

search constitutes a significant contribution to universal culture,” the Prince of Asturias Foundation says. Along with a cash prize of 50,000 euros and a sculpture by Joan Miro that symbolizes the awards, each award winner receives a diploma and an insignia bearing the Prince of Asturias Foundation’s coat of arms. The prizes, which Spain’s Crown Prince Felipe will hand out at a ceremony in the autumn in the northern Spanish city of Oviedo, are regarded as the Ibero-American world’s equivalent of the Nobels.

the World and Málaga Acoge (Málaga Welcomes) met with immigrants who showed them bills for emergency health care, which is against the decree-law. “They come to us in desperation, with invoices for huge sums that are accumulating interest because they have not been paid,” said Ruiz. The government of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands, also in the hands of the PP,

stated on May 8th that it would cancel all improperly issued bills and repay the money that immigrants have paid for emergency health services. Each one of the 17 autonomous communities that make up Spain has applied the decree-law differently. Andalusia, Catalonia, Asturias, the Basque Country and the Canary Islands have refused to enforce it.

missing amy’s dutch Couple Brother murdered found murdered

THe ‘missing persons’ file on 15-year-old Amy Fitzpatrick remains open in Spain to this day, five years after her disappearance. There have been interviews and searches of the Mijas Costa, in Spain’s Costa del Sol, yet Police have found no trace of her.

Audrey Fitzpatrick, who had moved to Spain from Dublin in 2004 with daughter Amy and son Dean, made appeals for information after her daughter failed to arrive home. She vanished without any money, passport or phone. She was wearing a friend’s clothes as she walked home with a bag of her own dirty clothes in her hand. Searches were carried out by Guardia Civil in the days and weeks after her disappearance concentrating their search around the area just outside Fuengirola where Amy was last seen Just last year, Ms Fitzpatrick confirmed Spanish police had agreed to interview a

convicted Irish gangster, Eric ‘Lucky’ Wilson, who is serving a life sentence for murder. Wilson was living nearby to the family’s home when she disappeared. Wilson is serving a 23-year sentence in Spain for the killing of a British expatriate, who was shot in an argument over a girl. Ms Fitzpatrick said the girl was a friend of her daughter. She requested the interview after an anonymous tip on Facebook that Wilson had boasted about killing Amy. Ms Fitzpatrick and her son, moved back to Dublin, where, in a further tragic twist,

THe Interior Minister has announced that Police have found two bodies believed to be those of missing former dutch national volleyball star and her partner. Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the apparent killing of the couple.

Dean, aged 23, was killed last weekend, stabbed to death. A man has been arrested in connection with the murder.

The bodies were found in a lemon grove on Sunday and “all signs indicated” they are those of Ingrid Visser, 35, and her partner, Lodewijk Severein, 57, Joaquin Bascunana, an Interior Ministry official in the southern Murcia region, said. The bodies had been buried in a shallow grave. Forensic tests were continuing. There were no immediate details on the cause of death or possible motives. The couple were last seen on May13th when they left a hotel in the city of Murcia. A doctor with whom they had an appointment the next day notified police when they failed to appear. The couple’s families said police had informed them and although identification was still in progress they were shocked by the news. A poster and Internet campaign had

been started in the hope of finding the couple. Bascunana said investigations initially led police to a house in the Murcia town of Molina de Segura where the couple were killed. The bodies were later taken to Alquerias. Police arrested a 36-year-old Spaniard on Saturday in the eastern coast city of Valencia, about 400 kilometres (250 miles) north of Murcia. A ministry statement Monday said two Romanians aged 47 and 60 were later arrested, also in Valencia, and are suspected of carrying out the killings. Visser holds the record number of appearances -- more than 500 -- for the Dutch team. She played for local team CAV Murcia from 2010-2012.

Spain Princess Tax Probe

Spain’s Princess Cristina has been placed under investigation for tax fraud and money laundering. The court recently withdrew a summons against the 47-year-old princess for questioning over the alleged embezzlement of public funds by Urdangarin, but said she could still be called to answer questions regarding their finances.

Judge Jose Castro said he had requested information from tax authorities after a higher court overturned his decision to name the daughter of King Juan Carlos as a suspect in a corruption case involving her husband,

19

Inaki Urdangarin. There was no evidence of the princess having participated in the daily business activities of Urdangarin, the court said in explaining its decision. The former Olympic handball player is under investigation on charges of embezzling millions of euros in public money through a charity he headed. Judge Castro suspects the princess may have participated in tax evasion as a co-owner of Aizoon, one of the companies that Urdangarin allegedly used to divert money. The judge is to examine 10 income statements by Cristina, although tax authorities have found no evidence the princess might have done something illegal, according to media reports.

Vodafone 3 Soldiers Killed On Spanish Base First With 4G

An explosion at the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit at the Álvarez de Sotomayor camp in Viator, Almería, Spain killed three soldiers and injured a further two, including a sergeant. All three were experts in disarming bombs and had served on international missions in Bosnia, Lebanon and Afghanistan, among other locations, according to the military.

Vodafone’s Spanish unit will be the first network in the country to launch superfast 4G mobile internet services, beating rivals Yoigo and Orange. Vodafone launched the service in Spain’s seven biggest cities on Wednesday for up to 10 euros more than current rates, Vodafone Spain Chief Executive Antonio Coimbra told a news conference in Madrid. In Spain, where 27% of the workforce is unemployed, having 4G could give operators a competitive boost,

particularly if superfast internet is available at low prices. Vodafone has been hit by an exodus of clients to cheaper providers 4G services, already available in several European countries, make it easier to make video calls and watch television on smartphones. Vodafone’s market share fell to 25.7% in March from 28.6% a year earlier. According to data from Spain’s telecoms watchdog the CMT; it lost 297,870 mobile accounts in March. TeliaSonera’s Yoigo said at the beginning of May that it would launch 4G services in July, with no additional cost

for current 3G subscribers, but Orange pipped Yoigo to the post with an announcement that it would offer it ten days earlier than Yoigo, but with no pricing details. A source at No.1 player Telefonica said that the company would “do something before the summer, either alone or with another operator”, without giving further detail. According to Spanish newspaper Expansion, Telefonica was negotiating an agreement with Yoigo to use its 4G network because it does not have 1,800 Mhz frequencies available. A Telefonica spokesman declined to comment on the report.

They were named as EOD technician Antonio Navarro Garcia, originally from Córdoba, Manuel Velasco Roman from Calvary, Málaga, who was married with two children and Jose Francisco Prieto Gonzalez from Estepona, Málaga. An internal investigation is currently underway, but it is believed that the explosion occurred during the transfer of explosives inside the base, near a mortar mounted on a BMR armoured personnel carrier. Maj. Eleuterio Ciego said that the blast occurred as troops were returning from an exercise and the cause remains under investigation. One of the injured was taken to a hospital, while the other was treated at the infirmary on the base. Álvarez de Sotomayor is home to the Sappers Unit of the Legion, an elite corps in the Spanish armed forces. The unit’s main task is to modify the terrain to ease the movement of combat forces.

It is also anti-bacterial and hypo-allergenic;

bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial and resists mould, mildew, fungi and dust mites. These properties remain intact, making it suitable for those with eczema, hypersensitive skin or hay fever caused by dust mite. Even better news is that bamboo fabric require less frequent washing, it needs no more than a 30˚C wash and dries in half the time of cotton. Tumble dry low and remove from dryer as soon as it stops to avoid unnecessary creasing. The only place that actually stocks these delicious items is Antiquities Tenerife in Las Chafiras. The have stock in three different colours, soft brown, grey and aubergine and at the moment they have an offer for one bath towel and a hand towel for just 15,00 Euros. Pop in and see them and feel the difference for yourself.

“Every time you get drunk, you push away the people that matter to you, like your girlfriend,” the narrator says at the end of the 20-second commercial, which some have labelled as extreme. But the head of FAD, Ignacio González, defended the content, telling Spanish news site lainformation that the problem of alcohol abuse among young people in Spain is “very serious”. He said the reality of young people drinking too much was “more disgusting” than the video itself. González also defended the video’s production valuing, saying that “science fiction cinematography is something young people recognize instantly.” The director of FAD told lainformacion that Spain’s drinking habits had changed from “Mediterranean style” to “Nordic-style binge drinking” in the last 25 years. He says this was partly the result of much longer opening

hours, but also in part as “being drunk is no longer frowned on”. “We have enthroned drunkenness,” said González. “It’s almost funny.” He also pointed out that young women were more likely to abuse alcohol than their male counterparts. Explaining this, he said his foundation believes young women have a false idea of the idea of equality in Spanish society. González claims that both peer pressure and the different physiology of women have played a role in this development. The FAD director said

Spain needs to talk openly about its alcohol problem and recognize that “there are a huge number of alcoholics in this country”. But González — who has nothing against a glass of red wine with dinner — is not in favour of tougher regulations such as lifting the minimal age of alcohol consumer to 21.He argues instead that the current rules need to be properly enforced. 36% of people aged 14 to 18 admit they have been drunk in the last month, according to the director of FAD, an increase of 10% since 2006.

t 2.20pm on Wednesday, a two minute silence was held in a tribute to honour of Drummer Lee Rigby as it was announced that a memorial service in honour of the murdered soldier is to be held in Darlington. Organisers of the event, planned for the Cenotaph in the grounds of the Memorial Hospital, hope that residents will attend as a show of support for the whole of the Armed Forces from the town.

A post-mortem examination has found that Drummer Lee Rigby died from “multiple incised wounds”. Drummer Rigby, 25, was hacked to death in broad daylight near Woolwich barracks and Michael Adebowale and Michael Adebolajo, who were both known to MI5, were arrested on suspicion of his murder. Adebowale was also arrested on suspicion of the attempted murder of a police officer. Adebowale, 22, was injured after he, and his alleged co-accomplice Adebolajo, were shot by officers at the scene of the attack. Adebowale is being questioned by police after being released from hospital. Adebolajo, 28, remains in hospital under armed guard. A man tasered by police as he was arrested in connection with the murder of the soldier denied an involvement in the killing and said he was “greatly distressed”. Hayden Allen, who is reportedly a Muslim convert, was held on Saturday on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder by detectives from Scotland Yard’s Counter Terrorism Command. Specialist firearms officers used a Taser on Allen, 21, as he was arrested in Charlton Lane, in Green-

wich, south-east London three days after the killing of Drummer Rigby. He was later released on bail. Allen, who is understood to have attended the same mosque as the two main suspects, said: “I had no prior knowledge of the atrocity that happened last week and I played no part in the incident or the leadup to it whatsoever. My family are wholly uninvolved. I ask that the police continue to investigate and that my family be allowed without harassment to continue their lives.”

He added: “I have been greatly distressed by all that has occurred.” A week on from the atrocity, police are asking that anybody with information to come forward. Officers are handing out leaflets and are urging for calm and to show restraint. Subsequent reports have emerged that Adebolajo was detained by Kenyan authorities three years ago because they feared he was attempting to join an al Qaedalinked militant group, the country’s

More Trouble For Beiber Justin Bieber was reportedly chased by furious former American footballer Keyshawn Johnson after speeding around his gated community in a white Ferrari.

The ex-National Football League Star, who lives close to Bieber’s Los Angeles home, was outside playing with his three-year-old daughter when the teen is said to have driven past, at great speed. Johnson immediately got into his Prius and followed the singer to his nearby property to confront him. As the garage door was closing Johnson reportedly put out his arm to stop it and told the 19-year-old he wanted to talk to him. But Bieber disappeared into his house without speaking and later reportedly declined to talk to police as well. Police have confirmed they are investigating Bieber for reckless driving. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s De-

21

partment received two calls and went to the location. Spokesman Steve Whitmore said Bieber is alleged to have driven his Ferrari 458 at motorway speeds: “His security detail said he declined to talk to us based on the advice of counsel,” said Mr Whitmore. Officers at the scene spoke to two witnesses, including Johnson, and filed a

report to detectives who are looking into the allegation. The maximum speed limit on most Californian motorways is 65mph. Prosecutors are also looking at whether to charge Bieber for battery in a separate row involving a neighbour, who complained the pop-star attacked and threatened him during an argument.

anti-terrorism police said. So far, 10 people have been held by detectives investigating the young soldier’s death, including a 50-year-old man, arrested and released on bail a day later. A 22-yearold man arrested in Highbury, north London, and three men also detained over the killing have all been released on bail, as has a fifth man, aged 29. Two women, aged 29 and 31, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder but later released without charge.

It reads: “Nothing we say can undo the events of last week. However, as a family, we wish to share with others our horror at the senseless killing of Lee Rigby and express our profound shame and distress that this has brought on our family. We send our heartfelt condolence to Lee Rigby’s family and loved ones. “We wish to state openly that we believe that there is no place for violence in the name of religion or politics. We believe all right thinking members of society share this view wherever they were born and whatever their religion and political beliefs. We wholeheartedly condemn all those who engage in acts of terror and fully reject any suggestion by them that religion or politics can justify this kind of violence. We unreservedly put out faith in the rule of law and with others fully expect that all the perpetrators will be brought to justice under the law of the land. “And we pray for Lee Rigby’s soul to rest in peace, for the Lord to comfort his parents and loved ones and provide all of us affected the strength and fortitude to cope with this tragedy. In all the circumstances and in respect to on-going police investigations, this is the only statement we wish to give. We ask that we are not contacted for further comments.”

Burger King Getwaway Fiasco Jeremy Lovitt, 23, and Gabriel Gonzales, 19, held two employees at the Burger King in Stockton, California at gunpoint and demanded they hand over the restaurant’s cash. However, they were caught leaving the restaurant and finding their getaway car had disappeared.

During the robbery, another worker slipped out the back of the store and found an empty car with its engine running and the keys in the ignition. Realising it was probably the robbers’ getaway car; the employee got in and hid the vehicle around the corner.

Lovitt and Gonzales then tried to run away, but were quickly caught by police, authorities said. Lovitt was charged with felony robbery and is being held in the San Joaquin County Jail on $150,000 (£99,768) bail, police records showed. His next court appearance is set for Wednesday. Gonzales is being held without bail on the robbery charges and several other outstanding warrants, including a misdemeanour charge of receiving stolen property.

australian it specialist Claims He is the messiah

FoRMeR IT specialist Alan John Miller, or AJ as he prefers to be known, claims that he is Christ. He runs a religious movement known as the divine Truth from his home near the small town of Kingaroy in the state of Queensland. Mr Miller also claims

that his partner, Australian Mary Luck, is actually Mary Magdalene, who according to the Bible was present at the crucifixion. Mr Miller says: “I have very clear memories of the crucifixion, but it wasn’t as harrowing for me as it was for others like Mary who was present. When you are one with God you are not in a state of fear,

and you have quite good control over your body’s sensations and the level of pain that you absorb from your body.” After his crucifixion the Australian claims he entered the spirit world where he met Plato, Socrates, popes and presidents. He also says he remembers performing miracles: “I did resurrect quite a number of people ... including a

friend of mine Lazarus, who most people know is mentioned in the Bible.” Mr Miller holds seminars and also travels around the world teaching people how to have a personal relationship with God, often by delving deep into their emotions. Dozens of his followers are understood to have bought properties in the area to be closer to him. Whilst causing concern among cult experts in Australia, and critics dismiss his claims the seminars attract large groups of people, up to 150 a time. British woman Louise “Luli” Faver, 39, is a former neuroscientist who has given up her career to be closer to the couple. She believes AJ Miller has helped her become happier and more fulfilled in life: “It’s just nice to instead of being surrounded by people who think you are nuts, to be surrounded by people who understand what you are going through and the difficulties of trying to deal with all the emotional stuff,” she said. George Hamel has left behind a business and his wife in California to be closer to Mr Miller and his teachings. He firmly believes Mr Miller is Jesus Christ and insists there’s nothing sinister about him: “It’s natural that people form fears when they don’t know about something,” he said. “Anyone who has a chance to look into it aren’t going to find anything too upsetting.” Some, however, are concerned, Rev David Millikan has met AJ Miller and has studied cults for 30 years: “The danger is you’ll be drawn

closer and closer into his web to a point that you lose access to your social life, you spend all your money, you’ll have the curses of all your family ringing in your ears and you may well lose your relationship.” But Mr Miller says he does not demand anything of those who come to hear him speak. He claims donations are welcome, but not obligatory. He denies any suggestion that he forces anyone to do anything they are uncomfortable with: “All we do is present seminars and answer people’s questions. I still for the life of me can’t quite understand where the cult thing has come from. There were lots of people in the first century who didn’t believe I was the Messiah and were offended by what I said - and in fact I died at the hands of some of them. Unfortunately they didn’t learn love either and my suggestion is, even if you don’t believe I am Jesus, at least learn how to love.” Mary Luck admits her family were against her relationship with Mr Miller. She said: “My parents became very afraid simply because AJ was saying he was Jesus publicly and by their own admission they feared for what my life would be like. They also had some fundamental issues with looking at emotions which is core to these teachings.” Through DVDs, the internet and in person AJ Miller is spreading his word globally. Whether or not he really is the Messiah, there are plenty of people who are prepared to listen.

Queen’s Coronation Anniversary Picture Released

A new picture of the Queen, showing her standing in elaborate regalia in the middle of her Balmoral estate, posing in a Scottish field next to a stream has been released to mark the 60th anniversary of her coronation.

The Queen, wearing the striking emerald robes of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle - Scotland’s version of the Order of the Garter, stood for half-an-hour for the shoot. The image is among 100 portraits to appear in the latest edition of Alastair Bruce’s book Keepers, The Ancient Offices Of Britain.

The Sky News events commentator was at the photo session, which took place during the Queen’s holiday almost three years ago. He said: “I’d imagine the last thing on earth she wanted to do was dress in all that and travel out in a couple of Range Rovers out into the middle of nowhere and stand for half an hour to be photographed.”

The photo shoot nearly had to be abandoned because of the bad weather as the Queen declined to pose outside when it was raining. But when it cleared up, she agreed to head out to the remote part of the estate - despite concerns there would be a problem with midges. Bruce said: “We had seen her on the day of the shoot and she said

New Born Baby Rescued From Toilet Pipe

A new born baby boy stuck in a sewage pipe underneath a toilet has been rescued alive by fire fighters in eastern China. The story has sparked outrage on social media sites. China’s state broadcaster CCTV said the infant was found in the sewage pipe in a residential building in Jinhua in the wealthy coastal province of Zhejiang. Suggestions that the child had been dumped had to be revised after it emerged that the 22-year-old unmarried mother of the baby was the one who raised the alarm. According to a police source, the woman gave birth unexpectedly when she went to the lavatory on Saturday, and the new born fell into the squat toilet. The mother, who had hidden her pregnancy, called her landlord, claiming she heard “weird noises” in the pipe, and he in turn called police after spotting the infant. From the time he was found until when he was taken out, the baby was stuck in the tube for two to three hours, according to the policeman who declined to be named: “The woman was on the scene during the entire rescue process ... and admitted she was the mother when we asked her,” he said, adding they were still looking for the boy’s father. We need further investigations to find out if she had any malicious intentions” before deciding whether the mother would be charged, he added. According to the officer: “The baby is very healthy now and can be released from the hospital.” However he added that that the mother was in a serious condition due to complications from the delivery. Fire fighters had to remove the pipe, reported to be 10cm (three inches) in di-

‘As long as it’s not raining, we will do it’. Of course, when the Queen left the midges came out.” Photographer Julian Calder told how he wanted to picture the Queen as the Queen of Scots in the style of a Raeburn painting. At the start of the shoot, he went up to the Queen and asked: “Your majesty, may I take charge?” and she agreed.

Stroke Victims Improve After Stem Cell Therapy

A group of five stroke victims who had stem cells injected directly into damaged parts of their brains in the hope they would turn into healthy tissue or “kick start” the body’s own repair processes have shown small signs of recovery.

ameter, and take it to a nearby hospital. Doctors spent an hour carefully cutting the pipe, piece by piece, to rescue the 5lb (2.3kg) baby inside. The placenta was still attached. Thee news triggered hundreds of thousands of comments on China’s hugely popular Weibo service, similar to Twitter, with users expressing good wishes for the baby and anger at those who tried to flush him away. “I can never accept or forgive the behaviour of dumping the baby with his placenta and umbilical cord attached into the toilet pipe,” wrote a user with the online handle Jiding Jiajia. “Can these people be called human be-

ings? The animal to human ratio among the grown-ups is rising inexorably.” Another user, If-Free, said watching the rescue left her distraught: “Seeing the little one wriggling and groaning as the pipe was torn apart bit by bit wrings my heart ... You’ve lived through the hardest moment in your life and your future will definitely be smooth,” she said. There are frequent reports in Chinese media of babies being abandoned shortly after birth. The problem is attributed to factors such as young mothers unaware they were pregnant, the birth of an unwanted girl in a society which puts greater value on boys or China’s strict family planning rules.

23

Professor Keith Muir, of Glasgow University, said the results were “not what we would have expected”, given the patients had previously shown no signs of improvement: “There’s probably a mixture of things going on. Quite what it is that’s happening in the patients, we won’t know for some time to come.” The stem cells used in the trial were created 10 years ago from a sample of nerve tissue taken from a foetus. Frank Marsh, 80, one of the patients taking part in

the trial, said he hoped to be able to play the piano again after regaining much of the use of his left hand: “I can grip certain things that I never gripped before, like the hand rail at the baths, with my left hand as well as my right,” he said. “It still feels fairly weak and it’s still a wee bit difficult to coordinate but it’s much better than it was.” His wife Claire said that while he wasn’t improving before the operation, he was now able to do things he couldn’t before. Earlier this month, scientists in the US announced that they had successfully used skin to generate embryonic stem cells. It is hoped those cells could eventually be used to make new brain tissue for Parkinson’s sufferers, new heart muscle for people with cardiovascular problems or pancreatic tissue to treat diabetes.

Mark Bridger Sentenced To Life For April’s Murder F

ormer slaughterhouse worker Mark Bridger has been found guilty of the abduction and murder of April Jones and will spend the rest of his life in prison. The five-year-old vanished while playing on her bike near her home on the Bryn y Gog estate in Machynlleth, mid-Wales, on October 1 last year. Her body has never been found despite the biggest search in British policing history.

Bridger was given the whole life sentence by trial judge Mr Justice Griffith Williams after he was convicted by a jury at Mold Crown Court of April’s abduction and murder and of perverting the course of justice by unlawfully disposing, destroying or concealing her body. 47-year-old Bridger stood impassively as he was sentenced but shook his head when the judge addressed his perverted interest in violent child abuse. Calling him a “pathological and glib liar”, the judge said: “There is no doubt in my mind that you are a paedophile, who has for some time harboured sexual and morbid fantasies about young girls.” The judge added that Bridger had stored on his laptop “not only images of pre-pubescent and pubescent girls but foul pornography of the gross sexual abuse of young children”. The judge said Bridger had ab-

ducted April “for a sexual purpose and then murdered her and disposed of her body to hide the evidence of your sexual abuse of her. He added it could not be inferred from the evidence where he murdered the schoolgirl “but if she was alive when you took her to the house, she died there. How you disposed of her body must remain a mystery. It will serve no purpose for me to speculate as to what happened but all the indications are that you burnt at least a part of her in the wood burner,” he added. The judge also said the “grief of April’s parents cannot be over-stated” and that without knowledge of what happened to their daughter “her parents will probably never come to terms with their grievous loss”. Bridger had denied the allegations, claiming he killed the youngster when he accidentally ran over her, but could not remember what he did with the body because he was drunk and panicking. The jury at Mold Crown Court returned the unanimous verdicts fol-

lowing just four hours and six minutes of deliberations. April’s grieving parents, Paul, 41, and Coral, 43, who attended court every day of the trial, watched from the public gallery. Mrs Jones

wiped away tears as she heard the verdicts, which were met with complete silence. She said in a statement read out in court: “I will never forget that night that April never came home. As Aprils mother, I will live with guilt of letting her go out to play that night for the rest of my life. Words alone cannot describe how we are feeling or how we manage to function on a daily basis. I would never, ever want any other family to go through what we are and will go through for the rest of our lives.” Bridger confessed that he may have disposed of April’s body to a Catholic priest while on remand in Strangeways prison in Manchester, it can be revealed. Details of his cellroom conversation emerged during legal argument in the trial - but were never heard by the jury. Drops of April’s blood and fragments of bone, thought to have come from an adolescent human, were found by forensics officers at Bridger’s rented cottage, Mount Pleasant, in Ceinws, Powys. It was visited by the jury in the first week of the trial. Jurors were told that Bridger was a “fantasist” who had “a clear interest in child pornography and in child murder cases”. He had been watching a brutal rape scene from the

2009 re-make of the slasher film, The Last House on the Left, “not long before” April was murdered, it can be reported for the first time. The jury was shown indecent images stored on a computer taken from the killer’s home. They included many extreme pictures of naked underage girls being sexually abused, as well as cartoon images featuring “monster sex” with “humanoids” abusing girls. Bridger also had images of April, her half-sisters, aged 13 and 16, and of the victims of “real-life” crimes including Soham victims Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in a folder labelled “Clothes”. The youngster was playing near her home on the day disappeared with a seven-year-old friend, who told the court she had seen April get into Bridger’s Land Rover. It is believed Bridger, who fathered six children with four different women, lured the schoolgirl into the vehicle with the false offer of a sleepover with his daughter. The next morning, unbeknown to him, Bridger was placed under police surveillance. He was spotted close to the River Dyfi, which runs through Machynlleth, carrying a plastic bag. Police arrested him the same day close to the river, while he claimed to have been helping in the search of the missing schoolgirl.

Boston marathon final mile

THoUSAndS of runners and their supporters completed the Boston Marathon that they were forced to abandon after bombs exploded near the finishing line last month. Runners carried three US flags and one Chinese flag as they pounded the raindrizzled pavement.

Two of the victims of the twin bombing were American, and a third was Chinese. The bombers are accused of killing a fourth person, an MIT police officer, a few days later as they tried to evade arrest. The run, organised by local running groups and businesses and publicised over social media, was billed as OneRun, with the slogan “We’ll get our finish”. Boston will run strong. Boston will run together. Boston will run as one,” organisers said ahead of the event. Some

3,000 people participated, the Boston Globe reported. Another 35 runners who were unable to finish the marathon were set to get a ceremonial finish in front of thousands of fans at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday. Speedway officials said Boston Marathon participants from Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio ran about half a mile (0.8km) from turn four to the circuit’s iconic Yard of Bricks finish line just before the start of the Indianapolis 500. “The tragedy last month in Boston still resonates with everyone, so we wanted to give runners the chance to finish the race in front of thousands of fans who will appreciate their persistence and determination,” said Doug Boles, Indianapolis Motor Speedway chief operating officer. “Everyone will remember the victims while also celebrating the strength and indomitable spirit of these

special competitors as they cross the hallowed Yard of Bricks.” Speedway officials issued the invitation through the Boston Athletic Association, the marathon organisers, who then contacted non-finishers in Indiana and surrounding states.

ill Pertwee, who played Warden Hodges in Dad’s Army, has died at the age of 86. The actor was known for his role as the air raid warden Hodges in the classic 1970s comedy, died peacefully on Monday with his family around him.

His agent Meg Poole said: “He was a really, really nice man. Very bright, very intelligent. He came from a big theatrical family, a big show business family, and like all of them it was his life and it was very important to him and he was a hugely professional, very clever man.” Pertwee became the subject of internet rumours last year after

Female Zoo Worker Killed In Tiger Attack

Zoo worker Sarah McClay, 24, was in the big cat enclosure at South Lakes Wild Animal Park in Dalton-in-Furness when she was mauled. She was taken by air ambulance to Royal Preston Hospital immediately after the incident, but she had been so badly mauled, she died four hours later.

Ms McClay was from the Barrow-inFurness area. Cumbria police described her death as “tragic”. The force’s Insp Matt Pearman said: “She did suffer some serious injuries; particularly neck and head injuries which proved to be fatal. Sarah’s family were very shocked, very distressed by the episode.” The animal that carried out the attack was a Sumatran tiger. The park’s website says it keeps both Amur (Siberian) and Sumatran tigers. The animals can be up to three metres long and weigh around

300kg (47 stone). Ms McClay had worked at the wildlife park for a number of years and was said to be “very proficient” in her work with big cats. The incident happened when staff were working as normal and the park was open to the public. Police insist visitors were not at any risk but think some may have seen her being attacked. Park owner David Gill said: “For some unknown reason, an inexplicable reason, because there is no reason why she did it, she opened the door and went into the tiger enclosure and straight in to the tigers, and now we’ll never know why.” It is believed that the attack happened during Big Cat Feeding Time. Mr Gill has said that the tiger had been at the wildlife park for ten years since it was a cub and that it is a tiger’s instinct to kill. He said the tiger was not doing anything wrong, as the rules are that no one is supposed to be in the cage.

New test Give Bladder Cancer Patients Hope A new urine test costing just £10 could diagnose bladder cancer in its early stages, significantly increasing the chance of patients’ survival.

Trials on almost 500 patients showed the simple test is reliable. Researchers are now developing a dipstick, similar to a pregnancy test, which could be used by GPs, which could monitor people at the highest risk of the disease such as smokers. Professor Hardev Pandha, who works at the University of Surrey and led the research, said it could be available in as little as two years: “We know the earlier the detection and the earlier the treatment the better the outcomes,” he said. “Aggressive cancers require very early intervention.” The research, published in the European Journal of Cancer, shows a protein called EN-2 is secreted by bladder cancer cells and can be reliably detected in urine.

Around 10,500 patients develop bladder cancer every year. Almost 5,000 die annually - more than the total number killed by skin, womb and testicular cancer. The urine test could also be used to monitor patients after they have had treatment. Currently patients have a camera inserted into their bladder under general anaesthetic every three months. The checks are unpleasant and cost the NHS £100m a year. Matthew Perry, a surgeon and adviser to the charity Action on Bladder Cancer, says a good urine test could make a huge difference: “Any test we can use to screen early, that is easy and cheap to run and is not invasive, would be a bonus for us,” he said. “It’s the holy grail for bladder cancer diagnostics at the moment.” The researchers are carrying out further trials of the test. They hope it could be available in as little as two years.

Beyond the Khumbu Ice Fall, the black mountain - everest!

Tenzing norgay brandishes his ice axe on the summit of Mount everest on 29 May 1953.

M

oUnTAIneeRS past and present gathered in London on Wednesday to mark the 60th anniversary of Sir edmund Hillary’s historic ascent of Mount everest. They were joined by the sons of the first men to reach the summit at the signing of a newlyreleased book on the expedition.

The evening marked 60 years since Sir Edmund and Tenzing Norgay became the first men to reach the 29,028ft (8,848m) summit on May 29, 1953.

Celebrated mountaineers Sir Chris Bonington, Stephen Venables and Doug Scott, who have all contributed personal reflections to the newlyreleased The Conquest Of Everest - Original Photographs From The Legendary First Ascent, were at the event. Also at the signing was mountaineer Kenton Cool, 39, who earlier this month became the first person to scale the three peaks of Everest’s Western Cwm in one climb, reaching the summits of Nuptse, Everest and Lhotse with climbing partner Sherpa Dorje Gylgen. ebrates 60th Anniversary Climber Alan Arnette has scaled the world’s highest mountains, including Everest. He talks about conquering the toughest climb. How has climbing Everest in the last 60 years changed, if at all? The climb itself remains difficult. The expedition takes almost two months, and is hard on climbers as they lose weight, manage long down times combined with short bursts of physically demanding climbing at high altitudes. But the mental aspect is probably the most difficult part for most people. Is it easier to climb now? Today’s climbers have an advantage over the early adventurers by climbing a well-known route to camps stocked by Sherpas. The advancement in technology for clothing and gear have made the climb more comfortable but not necessarily safer. Advancements in weather

e

month in the hills, following

foresting technology has made the climbing safer by reducing the opportunity for weather surprises, but still the weather and altitude are the most significant challenges of climbing Everest. Nine climbers died in 2013, 10 in 2012 - almost all from complications from altitude and others from falls. Are there issues with congestion? On most normal years, crowds are not an issue. Everest is a huge mountain that can easily handle 100 climbers on a single night. But if the weather is difficult it slows climbers, congestion can occur in short sections such as on the SE ridge or at the Hillary Step. Commercial guides sometimes cooperate to stagger summit pushes in an attempt to reduce crowds in these conditions. There is talk of a ladder to ease this, what do you think of this? The Hillary Step at 28,7050 feet is a short section of

moderate rock climbing. The Step itself is about 40 feet high at an angle of 45 to 60 degrees. For most climbers, it is a simple obstacle easily climbed. What makes it difficult is fatigue, the altitude and having your vision obscured by goggles and wearing an oxygen mask. There are ropes installed on the Step to aid climbers in the ascent and descent. In 2013, a second route was installed bypassing the Step entirely for climbers descending from the summit. I do not support a ladder on the Hillary Step. This level of climbing is basic and climbers should have this level of rock climbing skill before coming to Everest. If a climber is going too slowly or having extreme difficulty on the Step, then they may be in danger of a tragic event on the descent from the summit and should turn around to save their own life or avoid a rescue that would put others at risk.

Ed Hillary works his way up a steep snow-face, approaching the summit ridge, with the Whymper Glacier in the distance below.

Back down safely at Camp IV on 30 May, our South Col and summit team pose for a photo: Hunt, Hillary, Tenzig, An Nyima, Gregory and George Lowe.

Near Base Camp the beautiful but unstable pinnacles of the Khumbu Icefall present a daunting obstacle to anyone wanting to gain access to the Western Cwm.

stephen Hawking – giant lego Comic Book Hero model unveiled

PRoFeSSoR Stephen Hawking Professor is perhaps best known for his book A Brief History of Time, which explains the nature of the universe to non-scientists, but now he has been turned into a comic book character for an illustrated series about his life. Writers said Stephen Hawking: Riddles of Time & Space would provide a glimpse into “the man, the myth and the legend”.

The series will cover the 71-year-old physicist’s college days, his work as a researcher at Cambridge and some of his key discoveries. “The very concept of making an engaging comic book where the protagonist is essentially immobile is a pretty tall order,” said artist Zach Bassett. “I think the key to us keeping it exciting was being able to get inside his mind one of the greatest of our time - and show some of his most abstract concepts in a visual and dynamic way. We had several chances to tip our hat to many famous artistic icons of pop culture, as well as famous people that he’s met, taken inspiration from or even inspired himself. He truly is a living legend and I was honoured to be able to illustrate his life in comic book form.” He is the latest in a line of famous faces to have been turned into cartoons by Bluewater Productions. Prince Harry, Katy Perry and John Lennon have all had their life stories turned into comic books by the publishing company. Writers Michael Lent and Brian McCarthy said: “The most surprising thing about Stephen Hawking is his razor wire wit. He maintains a child’s delight in discovery and credits his disability for allowing him to focus his mind.” Professor Hawking suffers from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a form of motor neurone disease that attacks

the nerves controlling voluntary movement. He was given only a few years to live when his condition was first diagnosed when he was 21, but has defied medical opinion by living into his eighth decade. Despite spending most of his life in a wheelchair, he is able to communicate through a computer. The new comic book will be available in both printed and digital form.

THe unveiling of a massive Lego model in Times Square brought new meaning to the saying that everything is bigger in new York City. A model of the Star Wars X-Wing Starfighter – is the largest Lego model ever built.

Made out of 5.3 million Lego pieces, the model weighs nearly 46,000lbs and is 43 feet (13.1 metres) long. Its wingspan measures 44 feet (13.44 metres) across. The ship is the work of 32 Czech Republic master Lego builders who spent a total of 17,336 hours and

over four months to complete the work. A representative from the toy company said its master builders’ kid-like desire to test their skills was what led to the enormous project: “The size and structural complexity of a freestanding model 42 times the size of one of our retail sets was a challenge they could not resist,” Michael McNally said. The model’s unveiling coincides with the premiere of a new Star Wars-themed animated series, The Yoda Chronicles, and will travel to California for permanent installation at Legoland in Carlsbad.

Almost heroes and fashion victim villains!!

It’s almost summer blockbuster time in cinemas and it’s no surprise that there’s no shortage of comic book hero adaptations to munch popcorn to- we’ve already had Iron Man 3, Man of Steel is imminent, followed by Wolverine, Kick Ass 2 and Thor-The Dark World in the near future. But what about the projects that never quite made it to the big screen? Here’s a few Superhero movies that were almost filmed, but never quite made it out of development limbo, plus, for fun, a few of the worst costumed super villains ever to be put on celluloid-that should have remained forever on the drawing board!!

tors, this plotline was explored in X-Men: First Class, making this movie idea moot. 2: Green Arrow

With a script from Batman Begins scribe David Goyer, this looked like a dead cert, with a plot involving GA having to team up with Various DC villains in order to escape imprisonment on Alcatraz. The character now has his own TV series (Arrow). 3: Spiderman 4-Carnage

In a mythical supposed post credits scene from Spiderman 3 that was never actually shown, a second, much larger asteroid, like the one which carried the alien Symbiote Venom in the movie, is shown crashing in the desert, from which an alien red goo begins to spurt out, leading many fans to believe insane mass murderer/alien Symbiote, Carnage was to appear in Spiderman 4. However when director Raimi and star Tobey Maguire declined, a reboot was planned instead.

Almost heroes

673 Days to go!!

Here’s the latest news from that galaxy far, far away for all you wookiee lovers!!

With the Ford, Fisher and Hamill now confirmed to reprise their roles as Han, Luke and Leia, information is slowly leaking out about new lead roles and the actors being considered for them. The actor mentioned most in casting rumours seems to be Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The Tudors actor is apparently close to signing a deal to play an unspecified role, but considering his history with director JJ Abrams (he played a baddie in Mission Impossible 3) a villainous role

seems likely. Starwars movies are never short of bad guys so it’s no surprise that another actor from a previous Abrams production is being tipped for an

evil role- “Fringe” actor John Noble is apparently shortlisted for episode 7. It’s not all been good news since the house of mouse bought Lucasfilm , with the shutting down of games division Lucasarts , meaning highly anticipated “adult” Starwars game “1313” may never see the light of day. Disney have also cancelled the long running and highly popular animated series “The Clone Wars”, however the recent announcement of a new animated series “Rebels” to be launched in Autumn 2014. The series takes place during the gap between the prequel and original trilogy, chronicling the rise of the rebellion.

ways have the Midas touch when it comes to superhero movies, his Wonder Woman script never saw the light of day and a filmed 2011 TV pilot never aired, seems like the Justice League is Wonder Woman’s only hope. 5: Superman Lives

Forget George Clooney’s nippled Batsuit -Schwarzenegger’s icy villain looked like he walked out of a particularly camp episode of “Dancing on Ice” No No No!!!! 4: Bane

never really cut the mustard. Translating the comic character to film was always gonna be a challenge but the metallic green grinning helmet was a bad choice! 2: Juggernaut

Featuring so many false starts, writers, directors and stars I could write a book, early scripts featured an allblack Superman costume and giant spiders!! This eventually evolved into the Tim Burton directed “Superman Lives” starring Nic Cage as Kal El son of Krypton who got as far as costume tests and even named his son Kal El, he must have been gutted when numerous delays and in house bickering led to the movie being shelved.

From” X-Men: The Last Stand”. It’s not like they needed Vinnie Jones’s acting gravitas for the role, any wrestler lunkhead could have grunted through the lines... So why on earth did they choose to render that ridiculous looking CGI muscle body? 3: Mr Freeze

Criminal Costumes

1: Green Goblin Sam Raimi’s “Spiderman” proved the ol’ web slinger could look amazing on screenbut Willem Defoe’s Goblin

When Harry Sat Luxy

In Comic book lore Bane was physically enhanced mastermind that broke the Bat’s back. The recent “Dark Knight Rises” did him justice but this earlier version turned him into a low budget Mexican wrestler!! 5: The Riddler Another horrendous costume c r i m e from director Joel Schumacher’s “Batman” movies (Poison Ivy and Two Face almost made the list), unitards make even world class gymnasts look a bit silly!! At least with Jim Carrey playing the role-it seems fit he looks Riddlerdiculous!

Wrong Direction’s lushly locked lothario has found a backup job for when-sorry, “if”, his music career flops....babysitting!!

The 1D singer was in Barcelona last week and showed remarkable childcare skills whilst at the poolside with his hairdresser and baby Lux. Styles seemed perfectly at home with the rugrat proving that he can hold his own around “little things”, wait for the rush of 1D fans pretending to be toddlers in order to get close to their idol-at least it’s not much of a stretch for them!!!

A two-week study by Liverpool John Moores University Business School viewed more than 830 scenes from Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks. Researchers found 72% of the food consumed, or referred to, was unhealthy and exercise was only shown or mentioned four times across the entire two-week period. To make matters worse, the only character shown eating fruit - Minute Mart co-owner, Denise Fox, in EastEnders - is seen eating a tangerine while lying on the floor drunk. Doireann Maddock, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said the programme makers are putting their characters at an increased risk of an on-screen heart attack or stroke: “Walford, Coronation Street and Emmerdale would be much

healthier places if their famous residents were served up a more balanced diet, got active and drank only the recommended amount of alcohol when the cameras are rolling,” she said. The study has been criticised by Michael Walton, emeritus professor at the University of Hull’s drama department, who said history shows audiences enjoy watching people eating and drinking too much: “Unhealthy eating has a long dramatic pedigree,” he said, citing ancient Greek comedy and Roman writer Petronius who spent 50 chapters describing a single excessive feast. It is doubtful if Emmerdale has either the ambition, audience or budget to emulate that,” he suggested. Dr Aric Sigman, a psychologist involved in health education, said watching so much unhealthy activity

could encourage soap viewers to copy it: “While we hate to admit it, we are influenced by what we see on TV, yet the effects are subliminal and we’re not aware of it,” he said. “Children and young people are influenced even more than we are by the role modelling and ‘normal’ behaviours and habits they see on TV.” The Co-operative Food, which funded the study to promote healthy eating, says it wants programme makers to present “a more balanced picture”. But Professor Walton is not convinced: “I very much doubt anyway if there is much dramatic mileage in sensible lifestyles. Drama has to have some plotlines, a balance of characters and situations. Different lifestyles are a part of the general context and always have been,” he said.

Sharples in Session By John Sharples

Ask A Silly Question

It has been my experience, after 35 years in the tourist and Entertainment industry that most people don’t just switch off the gas when they leave for the airport. Many of them disengage brain too. This

is a perfectly normal thing to do. A holiday is about relaxing and taking your mind off the worries of life. I do worry sometimes about the things I see and hear however.

Here are ten true but stupid things that tourists

man asked me what his chalet number was. I told him that it was the number written on the keyring and he said, “What a good idea”. 3. I was asked what month “May Day” was in. 4. Does Wales close during the winter months? 5. Whilst working in Gran Canaria a woman actually asked me if I lived there. I told her that I flew out every morning and went shopping in Preston on my day off. She said that it must be a very tiring job and that she wouldn’t be able to manage it. 6. A woman once told me that she didn’t want to go to Piccadilly Circus in London because she didn’t feel that animals should be used in that way and that circuses were cruel. 7. Is there a bus service from Tenerife to Gran Canaria? 8. What direction is the North in Tenerife? 9. Are there any underground caves in Tenerife? 10. I believe that that there is a national park in Tenerife. We love theme parks. When was Mount Teide built? If only people could hear themselves! I wonder whether I am guilty of the same thing when I go on holiday. I hope not!

have said or done during my time in tourism. 1. When I worked at a holiday centre in Morecambe a woman asked me if there were any lakes in the Lake District. 2. When handed a chalet key at Pontin’s, Prestatyn, which had a keyring with a number written on it, the

Good News Week

Quake, Murder, Bridge Collapse, Tornado and Fire. Those were the news headlines on one day last week. The headlines all appeared on the same day. Are we all obsessed with disaster? Can’t we find any good news in this big wide world of ours?

In a recent poll, approx. 50,000 people were asked, in the light of the recent machete murder in London, whether they would be afraid to show public support for our military. The result was a little worrying. 4 per cent of people said that they would be. Although this figure may seem low, it bothers me. Nobody should be afraid to show support for what they believe in

because of someone else’s actions.

I think that the Australian Prime Minister has got it right. She has basically told people from all walks of life, “If you don’t like the way we do things in our country .... GET OUT” Damned right too. We could do with a leader that would say the same thing to our lot! I am not being racist in any way. I live here now and I abide by the rules of law of Spain. I may not always agree with every law, but I accept that I am a part of here now and I would never do anything against the people of this

country. British people don’t have the national pride that they used to have. They have so much to be proud of. They saved Europe from tyranny in the Second World War, yet many people are frightened to fly the flag because it might offend someone. If everyone flew the flag, like the Americans do, there wouldn’t be an issue. It is time for people to wake up move their backsides and stop expecting the government to do everything for them. We have the power! Stand together and stand proud.

Well, I have found some, so here is the news according to John Sharples .... A restaurant in Spain has told its customers that if they can’t pay the bill, they can work for an hour and they will be paid with a full three course meal. Terrassa’s council has joined with fundraisers to open the restaurant that plays host to the work exchange scheme. ++++++++++ Ten year old British boy, Oliver Burton, who was recently told that he only has weeks to live, wanted, more than anything, to meet the Queen. When the visit to the Queen proved impossible, Dame Helen Mirren stepped forward to give him the next best thing. The boy from Leicester has been battling leukemia for most of his young life. According to the local Leicester newspaper, Oliver, who suffers from Down syndrome, has been fighting the disease since he was three years old. Oliver is busy ticking items off his bucket list and meeting the queen was at the very top. Let’s hope that someone gets the real one to pull her socks up and sort a visit for the lad soon.

++++++++++ And finally, Pope Francis has said that all those people who do good will be redeemed, even if they don’t believe in God! Of course, not all Christians believe that those who don’t believe will be redeemed, and the Pope’s has managed to stir up the mud from past religious conflicts..

fake psy fools Cannes

A MAn pretending to be South Korean pop star Psy blagged his way into some of the biggest parties during the Cannes Film Festival. The imposter bears a resemblance to the Gangnam Style and Gentleman singer, and was spotted at VIP events at the famous festival.

He partied with stars, collected goodie bags, danced on a French TV show and even signed a deal to take part in a Monaco gala. “He was playing it up full scale,” a source said. “He had three security guards with him at all times, in suits and earpieces.” But the real Psy posted on Twitter that he was not even in France and was currently working in Singapore: “Seems like there’s another ME at Cannes,” the real Psy tweeted. “Say Hi to him.” He had told about his lookalike by Justin Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun. Skyfall actress Naomie Harris shared a photo of herself with the fake Psy, but then realised the truth:

“It looks as if we’ve been fooled, that wasn’t the real (PSY])!” she tweeted.”Could

anyone else tell from the picture? Or am I just going crazy!? Haha!”

gardening and Nature By Steve Andrews - aka Green Bard

Grow your own Dragon Tree facts Dragon Tree or Palm

Garden centres in Tenerife sell a wide variety of exotic trees and shrubs but how about growing your own from seed? It is easy to do and gives you the satisfaction of watching the seedling germinate and develop into a small tree. In years to come you can look at what you have grown with pride. Many shops sell packets of the seeds of the Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia), the Dragon Tree (Dracaena draco) and the Canary Islands Date Palm (Phoenix canariensis) and charge you at least 1 Euro. These packets only contain a few seeds and I never understand why people buy them when there are thousands of the same seeds lying on the ground underneath the trees they have fallen from. They are easy to gather and free of charge. You will be doing the trees a big favour too because sadly a lot of the seeds that fall on pavements and elsewhere on the ground get swept up and thrown away as rubbish. The Dragon Tree has orange berries which contain one or maybe two very hard pea-shaped seeds. Look around under a large Dragon Tree and you are likely to be able to spot some that have fallen off. They take a while to germinate and can take three weeks to a month before they do so. The baby Dragon Tree will poke its tiny green spiky leaves through the compost and as it grows will form a larger rosette. Over the years the leaves get longer and the trunk will develop and get thicker. It can take as much as 10 years though before a Dragon Tree will flower for the first time, but in the meantime you can take pleasure in caring for it and seeing your tree getting bigger and bigger. The weird-looking Jacaranda seed-pods are not so easy to discover on the ground because they tend to stay a long time on the trees that they are growing on. You should be able to find some lower branches with these pods on though and just one pod is all you need because they are full of the papery seeds that are very easy to germinate. Jacarandas

• Dragon Trees contain a sap that dries into a dark red resin known as Dragon’s Blood. • Dragon Trees have medicinal properties and the powdered resin has been used to treat ulcers, haemorrhages, and as a means of strengthening the gums. • Ancient herbalists believed that the Dragon Tree was ruled over by Mars. • The Dragon Tree was declared an official plant symbol of Tenerife by virtue of the Regional Act 7/1991, dated 30 April. • The Dragon Tree is a protected species and covered by Annexe II of the Flora Order. • Dragon Trees do not branch until they have flowered. This can take 10 years or more. • The resin of the Dragon Tree has been used in the production of lacquers, dyes and varnishes. • The Guanches, who lived in Tenerife before the Spanish Conquest, made shields from the bark of the Dragon Tree. • The oldest Dragon Tree in the world is the Drago Milenario that grows in Icod de los Vinos.

Dragon Tree grown from seed

Royal Poinciana seedpods

Jacaranda pods

Dragon Tree berries Palm Tree grown from seed grow at an incredible rate and can easily reach 6ft in a year. This tree has gorgeous purple-blue bunches of flowers and delicate foliage. It is surely one of the most beautiful trees grown on the island. The Canary Date Palm bears orange-yellow fruit that are like very small Dates (P. dactylifera) and contain hard stones inside the edible flesh. Although you can eat this flesh there is hardly any of it on them and it is a far better idea to try growing your own palm trees. The other species of palm commonly grown on the island are all easy to germinate too. Some types like the Desert Fan

Palm (Washingtonia filifera) produce thousands of small dark-brown to blackish fruit and after a storm they cover the ground underneath their parent trees. The Royal Poinciana or Flame of the Forest (Delonix regia) is another tree that has seeds that are easy to get growing. When in bloom it produces masses of bright scarletred flowers that brighten up our streets, gardens and parks. After the flowers have finished they develop into long dark-brown and almost black pods that hang down from the branches and are very ornamental in their own right. These

pods make wonderful percussion instruments too because they can be shaken like a rattle. The seeds are hard and bean-shaped and you will find a lot in one pod. The Sea Grape (Coccoloba uvifera) is unmistakeable with its large rounded and leathery leaves. It is very drought tolerant and doesn’t mind wind or spray from the sea so is often planted on promenades and at the top of beaches. The Sea Grape’s tiny white flowers are very fragrant and after blooming they develop into edible fruit that are green at first but which turn a purple colour when ripe. These fruit are carried in bunches too and really do look a lot like grapes. This tree is usually propagated from its seeds which are hard stones and you will

Sea Grape find one in each fruit. All of these trees will germinate better if you soak the seeds for a day before planting and are well worth growing. There are many other exotic species that are cultivated on the island so look out for their seeds as well. Personally I have always enjoyed finding out what I can grow myself and like to experiment. I grew my first Jacarandas and Dragon Trees in my living room in Cardiff and if they will do well there think how much better they can do here in the warm Tenerife sunshine.

Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.

He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

floating picnic

A GRoUP of five American tourists enjoying a holiday in Iceland got more than they bargained for when they had to be rescued after the ice they decided to picnic on broke off and floated away. The tourists had erected a folding table and chairs and settled down to enjoy their lunch when the piece of ice they had chosen suddenly separated from the land.

Pisces 19 february to 20 March

A lot that is upbeat and positive is happening at home. it’s a great week for entertaining, especially early on. That’s when good fortune may be the result of inviting key people over for a special meal. you might even feel motivated to redecorate, remodel, or clear out clutter. The focus then shifts to your romance and pleasure zone. Cancer 22 June to 22 July

you’re currently moving through a cosmic cycle in which it helps to relax and reflect. you might feel happiest when you’re taking time out, perhaps to read motivational books or watch an inspiring movie or two. if you feel you’ve gotten too far away from yourself, this is the ideal time to meditate and reconnect with your heart’s desire. you could find yourself agreeing to a certain person’s extravagant plans before you know it. There’s nothing wrong with this as long as you know what you’re getting into. The focus on shared resources and joint finances looks largely positive, but it could also indicate overconfidence in your situation or in the words of another. Make sure you do your research before signing deals that involve a lot of money. On the other hand, you could be financially very fortunate if you get it right.

Sagittarius 22 november to 21 december

romance as well as entertainment and fun friends have the potential to bring enjoyment, although you might wish that it was all less costly. However, money might be the last thing on your mind when you’re out indulging in all kinds of pleasures and exciting escapades. it isn’t all about entertainment. you can use the current trends to connect with people who might make keen and adventurous business partners. Be sure to do your research before you get involved, however.

The focus gradually shifts to your partnership zone to encourage more heartfelt conversation. it’s a good time to make mutual plans.

It was floating in the freezing seas around the Fjallsárlón glacial lagoon for over an hour before the authorities could be alerted and rescuers could reach them by boat. One of the picnickers had managed to jump off as the ice separated and set off to raise the alarm. By the time a team from the Hornafjörður sea rescue arrived the tiny iceberg was 10 to 15 metres out into the a lake at the end of the Vatnajökull glacier, 150 miles east of the capital Reykjavik Páll Sigurður Vignisson, a

volunteer for ICE-SAR, said: “The ice was solid when they got there, but when they set the table and chairs the wind changed and the next minute they were blown some 1015 metres into the lagoon. The scene was comical—they were sitting on the chairs around a table, on a piece of floating ice. But the iceberg could have cracked or flipped over any minute, throwing them into very deep, almost frozen waters.” When Mr Vignisson first reached the group he said the tourists were, “not at all

scared, pretty calm, laughing and joking about the whole thing, despite that they had been stuck floating for about an hour. They just didn’t realise the risks they were running. They thought they were doing something real cool.” The police were called, but they decided not to press charges after speaking to the group. About 20 tourists a year are thought to get in trouble around the perilous waters around the country, which is on the fringes of the Arctic Circle.

Ketchup & Branston ‘De la Casa’

Last week I shared a recipe with you for homemade Lemon Curd. It set me off to find some different alternative’s for the everyday favourites that we always find in the cupboard. For me a Ploughman’s simply isn’t complete without the perfect Pickle and, as a chef, I do have to take my hat off to Heinz, they really are the leader in the Tomato ketchup department - but how nice would it be to impress your friends and family with your own, especially if you grow your own tomatoes or vegetables!

Tomato Ketchup

Ingredients: 1 large red onion, peeled and roughly chopped 1/2 bulb fennel, trimmed and roughly chopped 1 stick celery, trimmed and roughly chopped Olive oil Thumb-sized piece fresh ginger, peeled and roughly chopped 2 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced 1/2 a fresh red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped

Bunch fresh basil, leaves picked, stalks chopped 1 tablespoon coriander seeds 2 cloves Sea salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 kilo cherry or plum tomatoes, halved plus 1 large canned plum tomatoes, chopped 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1/3 cup soft brown sugar

Method: Place all the vegetables in a large heavy-bottomed saucepan with a big splash of olive oil and the ginger, garlic, chilli, basil stalks, coriander seeds and cloves. Season with the pepper and a good pinch of salt. Cook gently over a low heat for 10 to 15 minutes until softened, stirring every so often. Add all the tomatoes and 1 1/2 cups of cold water. Bring to the boil and simmer gently until the sauce reduces by half. Add the basil leaves, then whiz the sauce in a food processor or with a hand blender and push it through a sieve twice, to make it smooth and shiny. Put the sauce into a clean pan and add the vinegar and the sugar. Place the sauce on the heat and simmer until it reduces and thickens to the consistency of tomato ketchup. At this point, correct the seasoning to taste. Spoon the ketchup through a sterilized funnel into sterilized bottles, then seal tightly and place in a cool dark place or the refrigerator until needed - it should keep for 6 months.

Homemade Branston Pickle Ingredients:

250 g carrots, peeled and cut into small chunks 1 medium Swede, peeled and cut into small chunks 4-5 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped 140 g dates, finely chopped 1 small cauliflower, finely chopped 2 onions, peeled and finely chopped 2 medium apples, finely chopped, unpeeled 2 medium finely chopped courgettes, unpeeled 15 small gherkins, finely chopped 280g dark brown sugar Tsp. Salt 60 ml lemon juice 350ml malt vinegar 2 tsp. mustard seeds 2 tsp. ground allspice 1tsp. cayenne pepper

Method:

Combine all the ingredients in a large saucepan and bring them to the boil. Then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook until the swede is cooked, but still remains firm, about 2 hours. Stir well to redistribute all of the vegetables. Bottle and seal in sterile and hot jars. Allow the pickle to age for a few weeks before using for that stronger richer flavour!

Vauxhall ampera neW porsCHe ‘favourite Hybrid’ 918 spYder

THe Vauxhall Ampera Hybrid beat off rivals including the nissan Leaf and the Toyota Prius Plug-In at the Telegraph Motoring Awards to be voted the readers ‘favourite Hybrid’. The Ampera Earth is the entry level model in Vauxhalls E-REV line-up which also includes Positiv and Electron trims. The Vauxhall Ampera Earth is generously equipped with standard features such as DAB, 7-inch touch screen display and Bluetooth. The Positiv trim adds leather seats, front heated seats and leather steering wheel plus front and rear park assist including rear view camera and the Electron has a navigation 7” colour touch screen and

Bose System with six speakers and sub-woofer. The Vauxhall Ampera has a real-world battery range of between twenty five to fifty miles, providing the battery is charged overnight, there is every chance you could go for months without having to visit the pumps. This range is ample for the average daily UK commute which research shows is less than thirty miles. For longer journeys

electricity is produced via an on-board range extender/ generator which seamlessly powers the car for a further three hundred miles. At all times, the Ampera’s wheels are electrically driven, setting it apart from conventional hybrid vehicles. Other benefits include a Type-2 charging cable which will enable customers to charge their Ampera at the vast majority of public charging points.

ton. The driver then presses the button to receive the telling-off. In theory, the offender then sheepishly retreats and promises to be better behaved in the future. Whereas this process might irritate the motorist, it is at least the end of the matter as there is no fine associated with the ticket. FlashPark’s Head of Business Development, Costas Constantino, said, “the ticket is the latest addition to the company’s range of low cost and motoristfriendly parking solutions.” He added: “The company’s constant search for innovation in parking enforcement measures since the introduction of the wheelclamping ban has seen them become a UK leader in landlord self-regulation and a popular option for those

struggling with parking enforcement on private property. FlashPark solves 87.6% of parking problems without having to resort to the use of issuing tickets - but our business is a constantly developing formula and is filling the vacuum created by the wheel clamping.” Talking Parking Ticket Message The talking parking ticket’s thirty-second message can be customised by the land owner to suit the circumstances. It can therefore be either friendly/ polite or forceful. For example: “Dear motorist, this vehicle is parked on private property where parking regulations are in force. A photograph has been taken as evidence and your number plate recorded. We reserve the right to contact the DVLA for the registered keeper details if you park here again. Please ensure in future you have permission to park. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter”. Either that or … “get off my land before my dog gets hungry”. Furthermore, the next generation talking parking ticket will allow the offender to record a response for the land owner – but presumably this will not be sent to market until someone perfects the automatic expletive beeper. What a strange world.

World’s first talking parking ticket

nAUGHTY motorists can now be “told-off” by the world’s first talking parking ticket – so best behave. This mother-like device – which is available in the United Kingdom via a company called FlashPark – best serves private land owners who want to discourage drivers from parking without permission. This is reasonable as property owners are not obliged to allow the public access to their land (generally). A motorist can therefore now return to his/her vehicle to find a yellow sticker on the windscreen. This resembles a traditional penalty notice but is distinguished by the phrase “audio parking notice enclosed”, the speaker symbol, and the red “play” but-

THe Porsche 918 Spyder hits 62mph in 2.8 seconds but is more fuel efficient than some superminis. It therefore averages about 85mpg and its carbon emissions are only 79g/km. Why? Because this 211mph beast is a plug-in hybrid. As such, its 887hp comes from a mid-mounted 4.6-litre V8, 608hp, petrol engine and two electric motors. The latter are powered by a liquidcooled lithium-ion battery that can be charged within four hours via a 10 amp/230 volt power supply. Alternatively, the Porsche Universal Charger completes the job in two hours and the Speed Charging Station only requires 25 minutes. But however it is charged the Porsche 918 Spyder covers 18 miles on battery power only (in ideal conditions). However, in this “E-Power Mode” - which is part of the Intelligent Management System that is controlled via the steering wheel

- the race to 62mph takes about seven seconds and the top speed is only 93mph. There are also four other engine modes to balance performance and frugality: “Hybrid”, “Sport Hybrid”, “Race Hybrid”, and “Hot Lap”. These complement Porsche’s Active Aerodynamic System. The Porsche Active Aerodynamic System moves body parts to vary the vehicle’s downforce. This, of course, is air-related drag that helps it stick to corners but has a negative effect on top speed and fuel consumption. As such, the Porsche 918 Spyder’s “Race Mode” sets the rear wing to a steep angle to maximise the aerodynamic traction (downforce). It also extends a spoiler between the two wing supports and opens two underfloor flaps that propel air towards the diffuser. This mode best suits race tracks with lots of corners. In contrast, “Sport Mode” helps the 918 Spyder hit

higher top speeds by reducing downforce. It therefore tweaks the wing angle and closes the underfloor flaps, but the spoiler stays in place. Finally, “E-Power Mode” maximises fuel efficiency but compromises aerodynamic traction. As such it retracts the rear wing and spoiler and closes the underfloor flaps. What a fantastic system. Furthermore, the Porsche 918 Spyder further boots its fuel efficiency via the lightweight carbon fibre reinforced plastic monocoque. This complements the seven-speed PDK transmission and rear-axle steering. The latter ensures the back wheels turn in the opposite direction to the fronts at low speed to make cornering more direct. At high speed, in contrast, they move in-line with the fronts. Porsche says this: “significantly improves the stability of the rear end when changing lanes quickly”. The Porsche 918 Spyder costs from 781,155 Euros. Oh!

The People’s Coronation BBC 1 - 21:00 - 22:00 david dimbleby revisits the 1953 Coronation through the people who took part and who celebrated it across the country.

From the young Fleet Street photographer keen make a name for himself on the London streets that day, to the Sussex brewery, who 60 years on is remaking their potent Coronation brew, this is not just the story of the Queen and her courtiers but also of the people who joined together to mark the momentous day. For David, who was a teenager at the time of the Coronation, it’s also a very personal story.

43

His father, Richard Dimbleby, had the huge responsibility of presenting the TV broadcast from Westminster Abbey. Against the wishes of the establishment, the people of Britain were eager to be granted access to this centuries old tradition. And so on June 2 1953 nearly half the population gathered around their TVs to watch this spectacular historical event which was once the preserve of the aristocracy. Meeting people who were there at the time and using newly discovered film archive, much of it in colour, David tells the story of the events of the day, from the places where they happened, as well as recalling his own memories.

Love and Marriage iTV 1 - 21:00 - 22:00 Love and Marriage is a comedy drama about the big love which binds the sprawling and chaotic Paradise family.

The series starts with Pauline Paradise: on the day she retires from work as a lollipop lady, she also decides to walk out on her marriage to Ken. As the weeks go by the series explores the aftermath of Pauline’s decision, along with the knock-on effects it has on her three adult children – it shakes their worlds and makes them look differently at their own idiosyncratic relationships… with explosively funny and emotional consequences.

45

It’s the day of Pauline’s retirement and she’s disappointed to learn that hardly anyone’s noticed or really cares – least of all her husband Silent Ken. The only person who does notice is Peter Bachman, who gives her a present. Pauline feels progressively more and more put upon and taken for granted by her family, and the pressure builds when her dad, Frank, has an accident. She seeks comfort from Ken who cruelly dismisses her, which is the last straw for Pauline - should she sit back and accept her life as it has been for years, or take a chance on a brand new one?

Tenerife Weekly - 31st May - 6th June 2013

FeRnAndo Torres has been named in Spain’s provisional Confederations Cup squad. The Chelsea striker, 29, who won the europa League with the London club this season, had failed to make Spain coach Vicente del Bosque’s recent squads.

Eight other English-based players have been selected, with the 26-strong party being reduced to 23 before the start of the tournament in Brazil on 15th June. Barcelona’s Carles Puyol and Sevilla striker Alvaro Negredo miss out. Real Madrid goalkeeper and Spain captain Iker Casillas is also in, as is midfielder Javi Martinez’s based on his superb performance for Bayern Munich - who won the Bundesliga title and Champions League. Torres, who scored 31 goals in 101 appearances for the Spain national side, had a fine season with Chelsea, scoring 22 goals in 64 appearances this season, including the opener in the 2-1 Europa League final victory over Benfica. “When Torres and Martinez didn’t come in before, it was because we didn’t think the moment was right. Now it is the opposite - they are both in good form,” said Del Bosque. “It’s almost impossible to have every player who merited a place. (Cesc) Fabregas, (David) Villa, Torres and Soldado are our four strikers. You could just as easily ask why we didn’t

include (Imanol) Agirretxe, Iago Aspas, Michu. We can’t bring in everybody. We’ve deemed it fit to call up Soldado because he’s had a great season. We’ve called up those players who are going to help us have the best tournament.” The world and European champions have two friendlies in the United States - against Haiti in Miami on June 8th and Ireland in New York three days later, before heading to Brazil. Spain’s first game in the Confederations Cup is in Recife on June 16th against 2011 Copa America winners Uruguay, with Tahiti and Nigeria also in Group B. The eight-nation warm-up event for next year’s World Cup runs until 30 June.

The Team

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Jose Reina (Liverpool), Victor Valdes (Barcelona). Defenders: Jordi Alba (Barcelona), Raul Albiol (Real Madrid), Alvaro Arbeloa (Real Madrid), Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea), Nacho Monreal (Arsenal), Gerard Pique (Barcelona), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid). Midfielders: Xabi Alonso (Real Ma-

drid), Benat Etxebarria (Real Betis), Sergio Busquets (Barcelona), Santi Cazorla (Arsenal), Cesc Fabregas (Barcelona), Javi Garcia (Manches-

ter City), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Javi Martinez (Bayern Munich), Juan Mata (Chelsea), Jesus Navas (Sevilla), Pedro (Barcelona), David Silva (Man-

chester City) Xavi (Barcelona). Forwards: Fernando Torres (Chelsea), Roberto Soldado (Valencia), David Villa (Barcelona).

Cheese rolling race goes tt tragedy ahead – With a twist An international field of daredevils took part in the annual cheese rolling competition in Gloucestershire, but this year’s unofficial event saw organisers replace the 8lb piece of double Gloucester with a lightweight foam version, a reaction to health safety fears, in order to make the downhill race safer.

The world-famous competition, which sees competitors chase the cheese down a steep hill, was cancelled in 2010 due to safety fears. Last week, the 86-year-old woman who provides the showpiece cheese for the event, was warned by police that she could be held liable for any injuries which occurred during the race. Gloucestershire Police confirmed that Diana Smart, and others involved with the event, had been given “advice”. A large police presence was noted at entrances to Cooper’s Hill, at Brockworth, near Gloucester, but the event went ahead as planned. Around 2,000 spectators watched around a dozen athletes chase the “cheese” 200 metres down the 1:2 gradient slopes of grass, brambles and nettles. Competitors slip, somersault and tumble their way to the bottom in spectacular fashion during the race - and the first person to grab the cheese is declared the winner. Acknowledged champion cheese roller Chris Anderson, 25, missed the competition having been posted overseas with 1Rifles, leaving the competition wide

open. The race was won by American Kenny Rackers, who wore a US stars and stripes morph suit. Mr Rackers, 27, an estate agent from Colorado Springs, had travelled to the UK especially for the race after seeing it on television: “I came over especially for this and I did what I had to

do to win,” he said afterwards. It feels great; I trained a long time for this and got hurt on the hill practising. I came three days early and I took a bad spill but I came to win and that’s what I did. I came 3,000 or 4,000 miles just for this race. I put it on my bucket list and today it was to win and that’s what I did.”

A JAPAneSe rider was killed during qualifying for the Isle of Man TT - just hours after being entered into the race. Yoshinari Matsushita, 43, was killed in an incident at Ballacrye on the north of the island and the qualifying session was immediately red flagged.

Yoshinari, from Saitama, had competed in the TT race since 2009, finishing fifth in the 2011 TT Zero for electric bikes as well as racing in the superbike and superstock classes. He was also the 2008

Motegi Endurance race winner. A statement on the Auto Cycle Union Events Ltd website read: “The ACU wishes to pass on their deepest sympathy to Yoshinari’s family and friends.” Clerk of the course Gary Thompson said: “Yoshi was a really popular competitor who had a large number of friends in the TT Races paddock. He was a genuine and friendly character who always had time for everyone. He will be sorely missed.” The Isle of Man’s Coroner of Inquests has been informed and an investigation into the circumstances of the accident is under way.

Stewards Refer Mercedes Tyre Test Protest To FIA

The Fia Statement In Full:

Monaco Grand Prix stewards are to write a report to the FIA regarding Mercedes’ recent Pirelli tyre test. It follows Sunday’s protest from Red Bull and Ferrari questioning the legality of running such a test with a 2013 car under current Formula One regulations. The sport’s governing body may then bring the matter before the International Tribunal.

“At the beginning of May, the FIA was asked by Pirelli if it was possible for it to carry out some tyre development testing with a team, using a current car. Within the contract Pirelli has with the FIA as single supplier, there is provision for them to carry out up to 1000km of testing with any team - provided every team is offered the opportunity to do so.

Although F1 regulations prohibit in-season testing by teams, Pirelli’s contract with the FIA as the sport’s official tyre supplier allows them to carry out up to 1000 kilometres of development testing with any team, provided every team is offered the opportunity. In a statement issued to the media following the stewards’ decision, the FIA said it had responded positively to an initial enquiry from Pirelli regarding the possibility of such a test with Mercedes’ current car, as long as the test was conducted by Pirelli and not Mercedes, and as long as all other teams were given the same opportunity. However, the FIA said it had received no subsequent confirmation from Pirelli or Mercedes that the test - carried out in Barcelona in the week following the Spanish Grand Prix - was going ahead, or that other teams had been given the chance to take part. Neither Pirelli nor Mercedes have released any official comment on the matter following the stewards’ decision.

“Pirelli and Mercedes-AMG were advised by the FIA that such a development test could be possible if carried out by Pirelli, as opposed to the team that would provide the car and driver, and that such tests would be conditional upon every team being given the same opportunity to test in order to ensure full sporting equity. “Following this communication, the FIA received no further information about a possible test from Pirelli or from Mercedes-AMG. Furthermore, the FIA received no confirmation that all teams had been given an opportunity to take part in this test. “In addition, with regard to the application of the sport’s rules, including principles of sporting equity, it should be remembered that the International Sporting Code provides that on the basis of a report of the stewards of the meeting, or on its own initiative, the prosecuting body of the FIA may bring a matter before the International Tribunal. “The Tribunal may decide to inflict penalties that would supercede any penalty the stewards of the meeting may have issued. Such procedure would be followed in pursuance of the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules.”

Paul O’Connell Captain Against Barbarians

Paul O’Connell will captain the British and Irish Lions against the Barbarians in Hong Kong on Saturday after Sam War-

burton was ruled out.

Warburton was a doubt for a tour opener after he was forced to sit out the first training session at the Aberdeen Sports Ground with a slight knock to his knee.

And Warren Gatland has opted against risking him, with O’Connell - the 2009 tour captain - stepping up to lead a squad that includes 11 Welshmen, five Irishmen, four England players and all three

Scots. O’Connell is one of six players with previous Lions experience - with Adam Jones, Mike Phillips, Jamie Roberts, Alun Wyn Jones and Jamie Heaslip also included in the 23-man squad. Barring the loss of Warburton, there are no real surprises in the line-up, though. Gatland has opted to give the players that have been in the training camp the longest the first chance - with the contingents from Leinster, Ulster and Leicester only teaming up with the squad on Sunday due to club commitments. That means Owen Farrell wears the No 10 jersey, while there is an all-Wales back row of Dan Lydiate, Justin Tipuric and Toby Faletau. Stuart Hogg gets the first chance to impress at full-back, with fellow Scots Sean Maitland and Richie Gray also starting. Gatland said: “I am really excited by the first selection of the tour. Naturally it comprises largely those players not involved in last

weekend’s Aviva Premiership and RaboDirect PRO12 finals and we have a lot of players making their debuts for the Lions. At the same time we have a hard core of experience with the six former Lions sharing 430 caps between them and 19 Lions Tests. “There are also some proven combinations such as the Welsh centre pairing and backrow. Some of the boys who played last weekend are on the bench as cover and generally everyone in the camp is raring to go.” British and Irish Lions: 15 Stuart Hogg, 14 Alex Cuthbert, 13 Jonathan Davies, 12 Jamie Roberts, 11 Sean Maitland, 10 Owen Farrell, 9 Mike Phillips, 1 Mako Vunipola, 2 Richard Hibbard, 3 Adam Jones, 4 Richie Gray, 5 Paul O’Connell (captain), 6 Dan Lydiate, 7 Justin Tipuric, 8 Toby Faletau. Replacements: 16 Tom Youngs, 17 Cian Healy, 18 Matt Stevens, 19 Alun Wyn Jones, 20 Jamie Heaslip, 21 Conor Murray, 22 Johnny Sexton, 23 George North

promotion party delayed not derailed for Cd tenerife Form An orderly Queue For Promotion

Wall of Sound FoR 88 minutes Cd Tenerife pummeled Hospitalet and led 3-0 urged on by an awesome show of noise and passion from the 16,546 crowd. The visitors were reeling and the promotion door was closing on them but substitute forward osado wedged it back open with an away goal that breathed new life into this Sunday’s second leg. This wasn’t just a game, it was an experience, the Tenerife players strode out like giants after being greeted by a wall of sound in the warm up, ticker tape cascaded down from the stands, flags and

bunting waved proudly and voices strained to offer every last drop of encouragement to the blue and white heroes. A couple of early sniffs from Hospitalet showed the Tenerife defence was back on solid form and ready to repel raiders, building on that they swept forward and soon got their reward. A direct free kick is like a golden invite to Loro; he floated his shot clear of the defensive wall and left the goalie grasping at air. There was a frenzy of noise around the stadium as the ball settled in the back of the net, we had lift off. The main threat was expected to be 21 goal Cirio from the

left but Moyano had him bottled up, Bacari tried to lead the forward line but he had to contend with Bruno and Rigo, they were the bouncers for the center of defence and neither Bacari or his team mates were on the guest list. Raul Llorente had one of his best games of the season at left back, pushing up to support the attack and keeping the door closed behind him. Tenerife looked fluid in midfield and the forwards were full of running and ideas. Maybe that sounds too much like perfection but Tenerife really were that good. Sergio Aragoneses had a quiet afternoon; a break near the end of the first half gave him some exercise as he charged out of his goal for a decisive clearance. Chechu should have done better with his second half shot that went high over the bar, never mind there was better to come. Llorente on the overlap picked up the ball and with his pony tail swishing in the breeze he cut inside, beat two defenders, and unloaded a hard drive into the Hospitalet net. At two goals down Hospitalet were forced into a double change, Osado had a bit more about him and at least got sight of the home goal before Moyano cleared the danger. Tenerife worked through their three subs, Chechu gave way to the speedy Suso, Medina replaced the influential Alberto, and Ayoze came on as the sub-

lime Loro departed to a deafening ovation. Even with the changes Tenerife kept up their intensity and drive for another goal. A penalty looked the certain outcome as a Hospitalet player handled in the box, but as the referee hesitated the ball broke to Medina who took his shot with power and accuracy – not a bad time to get his first goal of the season. The noise level cranked up a few more notches and the whole stadium joined in the anthems as the Mexican wave swept around the Heliodoro. As the minute’s ticked away promotion seemed assured but Cirio finally made a contribution picking up a loose ball and passing to Osado, the replacement forward smashed his shot and it went wide of Aragoneses and into the back of the Tenerife net. The crowd were a bit deflated at the final whistle but still surged onto the pitch (that’s a 3,000 euro fine for the club) to mob their

heroes. The away goal will count double if the teams are level after the away leg but Tenerife can score from any position and just one goal will leave Hospitalet with a moun-

tain higher than Teide to climb. Around 1,000 traveling fans and an expectant island will be waiting to celebrate after the 11 am game on Sunday, and it’s live on TV Canarias. IF… Languishing unwanted and unloved in the back of Tenerife fans minds is the emergency plan that kicks in if CD Tenerife lose over two legs. The second, third, and fourth placed teams from the four Segunda B groups have already started two legged knock out games. The six survivors will be joined by the losers of the two promotion play-off games; Jaen drew 1-1 at home to Alaves last week. Then they will slug it out in two legged cup football style to fill the last two promotion slots. Let’s not even go there.

S

toke City have appointed Mark Hughes as their new manager. The Premier League side announced that the former Fulham, Manchester City, Queens Park Rangers and Blackburn Rovers manager will replace Tony Pulis, who left the Potters last week. Hughes has been out of work since he was sacked by QPR in november.

Stoke chairman Peter Coates admitted the club needed a fresh direction and sees Hughes as the man to implement a more attractive style of football. Hughes says errors made at QPR and criticism will help inspire him to bring success to the Britannia Stadium. The 49-year-old insists the unhappy end to his tenure at Loftus Road made him more fired up to restore his reputation: “It was a very difficult time at QPR and mistakes were made,” the Welshman said. “I made mistakes which I have learned from. I had the task of keeping them up in the Premier League and I did that but 12 games later I lost my job. If I had been given more time I think I would have turned it around. We tried to run before we could walk and I hold my hands up. “But this is about the here and now and moving Stoke forward as a team and getting the success we all want.”
