IT is wonderful to be able to publicise areas that are considered “different” from what tourists have come to expect from Tenerife, namely cheap alcohol, beaches and karaoke. This week our gardening and nature columnist steve Andrews has written about the Tenerife Mountains and forests of Agua Garcia, see page 11. I have driven through the forests and mountains on several occasions, but
Tenerife Weekly - 28th June 2013 - 4th July 2013 not bothered to get out and have a proper look. This article has inspired me, visiting the “hidden” aspects our beautiful Island is now at the top of my list. I got married nearly ten years ago on a beach on the island of st. suggestion and the bride and groom jumped at the chance. I wish I had done it!! In the centre spread this week; there are some incredible pictures of Phil neville’s apartment in Manchester. It has been up for sale for the past three years, for 4 million and now he has had to resort to renting it out for an eye watering £15,000 a month. I must be too picky, I hate it! which is just as well, I seem to be a bit short this week! see you all next week.

THE CAR PEOPLE COMPETITION
This week’s The Car people Competition had another great response, with loads of correct answers to the question; what car did Rowan Atkinso drive as “Mr Bean” in his hit TV series? A 1969 BMC Mini MK II. Congratulations go
to Morag Lowson who was the lucky winner. We look forward to seeing her, with her family at the Sunday Carvery at Vivo, where they will also be treated to a round of mini golf each. This week’s competition question is on Motoring News page 39. Good Luck

EL CABILDO and the Ayuntamiento de Arona have announced an improvement project for the del bulevar Chajofe in los Cristianos, currently in the drafting phase. The economic Vicepresident of the Cabildo and island Councillor of tourism, Carlos Alonso, explains that it is “fundamental” to assess the suggestions which can be contributed at this stage from and businesses in the area “and their mainstreaming into the project”.
The action, which is part of the agreement of regeneration of the tourism space, will allow access from the Boulevard to the entrance to the Centre of Los Cristianos, opposite the Cultural Centre. It’s one of the main entrances to the tourist centre but, at the moment there is no pedestrian continuity with the town. Carlos Alonso recalls that this intervention will be car-
ried out in accordance with the criteria of the mobility Plan for tourist areas in Adeje and Arona, commissioned three years ago by Turismo de Tenerife, “and will improve the image of an area that is routinely used by thousands of tourists”. The proposal being developed by a team of architects headed by Gustavo García and Francisco Alayón, who have been awarded the drafting phase of the project. They propose a large public space with a square connected with the town that will convert the Boulevard into a new and attractive area and also host cultural events and entertainment. It will also regulated
the traffic and introduce new greenery, trees and vegetation. Regeneration of the tourist areas is an initiative launched by Tenerife tourism, the town councils of Arona, Adeje, Santiago del Teide and Puerto de la Cruz and the Ashotel hotel are all featuring a full programme of performances in the tourist towns of the island. Improvements are planned on beaches, walks and green areas, upgrading of roads that cope with large influxes of tourists, beautification of the motorway links and pilot studies of comprehensive rehabilitation, among other aspects.

At the last minute the abattoir workers’ strike has been called off - for the moment. May’s wages have now been paid in full, but given that the second half of the payment was not in fact made by the Cabildo as promised, but topped up by local farmers who need the abattoirs to process the meat they supply, this is not a problem that is going to evaporate. How long before a strike looms again? Indeed, June’s payment together with the normal extra half year payment is due next week, and workers say they won’t think twice about resuming the strike if those payments are late.

UNDErTOW – KEEP SAFE AT THE BEACH THIS SUMMEr
I wRITE all too often about deaths in the seas around Tenerife, and one reason for these, and other drownings, is that often beaches here are subject to undertow.
www.janetanscombe.com
Canarian Company Lopez Echeto who specialise in pastries made with almonds, chocolate, banana and yogurt, has created a new product line ‘Sweet Miami’ which is now on sale at the Miami International Airport. Lopez Echeto has had an office in Miami for the last 6 years from where they manage the international strategy of the brand. The company has already started commercial contacts Colombia, Panama and United States and distributes its product under the name of ‘Chocosouvenir’ there. The company was launched in 1941 by Luis López Echeto, an emigrant who left Jaca in north east Spain, with the intention of seeking new opportunities in America. He eventually came to Tenerife and opened a small bakery in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. A little girl of 7 years of age is in critical condition after nearly drowning at Alcalá beach. Emergency services were called with reports that a child had been pulled unconscious from the water and an ambulance took her to Alcalá health centre where a doctor and nurse stabilized her. The child was then transferred to Candelaria hospital where she remains in critical condition. The San Juan Association has opened a centre for curative education and social therapy for people in need of special care in Granadilla de Abona. The mayor welcomed the group and emphasized its important work for so many years for a special group, becoming a focal point in the South and on the island. He praised the role that the group has played for almost 20 years for their great effort and passion, in Adeje, and now also in Granadilla, and said that it was expected that “they continue to grow” and realize one of its objectives that are putting up these foster homes where many people can emancipate itself and have a life complete. The new centre is called ‘Blanca Cera y Dulce Miel has a capacity for 12 people, also has a shop where they can sell crafts made by members of the Association. The government has long said that part of its plan for “upmarket quality tourism” is several fold. To get rid of the cheap and shabby image created by the likes of the Tenerife Uncovered television programmes, to tend towards and generate new luxury and niche products, and to have fewer tourists – but “better quality and wealthier” ones who spent more. The idea that lower tourist numbers could equate with higher tourist spending was met with pretty widespread scepticism, but the first five months of this year do seem to offer support because latest official figures show the Canaries leading Spain in the average tourist spend, with international tourists bringing 4,644,000 Euros to these islands, 8% up on last year. What’s more, specific figures for the Canaries show a rise on 2012, with an average daily spend of 111 Euros, a rise of 6.4% compared to 2012 – and British tourists are leading the spend. The first five months saw fewer tourists but more income, and May itself was a superb month, the best May for ten years, but with the same general tendency to stay in better quality all-inclusive and 5* hotels. The message conveyed by what has been seen as a high-risk rebranding exercise might actually be getting out there: Tenerife is a quality destination for upmarket and wealthy tourists who have space to move and to spend.
One particular case in point is Callao Salvaje, which has a steep shelf and a constant drag that means one can hear the suction as bathers try to get out of the water even only at knee-depth. Callao Salvaje is not unique, but it is unusual, and most often undertow is the result of a combination of tidal and topographical factors. It is a serious risk, and it is important to recognize the signs, and to know how to get out of trouble if you get caught unawares. Proteccion Civil in Baja California have released the above picture which per-
fectly illustrates what an undertow can look like. Note the gap between the white crests of the waves where the current is drawn down and back out to sea even as the wave itself is heading into the coast. Sometimes they’re not visible, though, and then anyone caught in one is at risk – most particularly at risk of drowning through exhaustion by swimming against the tide. This is wrong, say lifeguards. Don’t try to swim back to shore as you’re being swept out to sea. Rather, turn 90º and swim parallel to the coastline.
Most regular swimmers will never overcome a strong undertow by swimming headlong at it, but most undertow currents are usually no more than 10 metres wide. Swimming at right angles to them, therefore, and along the coast rather than towards the coast, means that within minutes you will be out of the undertow’s stream, albeit further out to sea. You will then be able to swim back towards the beach with the help of the normal waves. Keep aware, and stay safe at the beach this summer!

ET Hotline Closure Explained By Marc Craig
I’m Going International This Week For My Paranormal Article.
I
n November 2009, the British government’s Ministry of Defence announced the closure of their UFO desk and hotline, prompting a backlash of criticism and protests from “ufologists”, as well as individuals who had claimed to have had some kind of extra-terrestrial experience, from simple UFO sightings to first contact and abduction. However, there negative reactions were to no avail, all UFO operations were shut down and officials “deliberately avoided formal approaches to other governments on the issue” amid fears of “international collaboration and conspiracy”.
No reason for the action was ever given by the MOD at the time and the closure has remained a mysteryuntil now. Recently released declassified files have the answer, 25 files from the National Archives revealed the simple truth, the real life X-files served “no defence purpose” and were utilising valuable manpower that would be better used on “more valuable defence-related activities”. The documents revealed that no less than 643 sightings were reported in 2009, three times the amount reported the previous year with one man claiming that he was living with an extra-terrestrial, it also contained notes from a briefing given to the then Defence minister in which Carl Mantell, RAF Air Command stated; “no UFO sighting reported to (MoD) has ever revealed anything to suggest an extra-terrestrial presence or military threat to the UK”. Once the closure came into ef-
9.30pm on June 22nd, 1976. For about 40 minutes, several hundred witnesses, civilian and military , over 4 islands Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, Gran Canaria and by a ship at sea, the Spanish Navy Corvette “Atrevida”,reported several phenomena from “bright yellow lights” replaced by a “luminous rotating beam” “ A glowing halo then developed around the object and it split into two components, a smaller component which split away from the bottom and went out of view, and a larger component which rose from the top of the halo and climbed away at a ‘rapid and irregular’ spiral pattern.” Many, many more descriptions were put forward and were quite varied, including a statement from a respected doctor that was included in an official Spanish Air Force investigation which described in detail the occupants of a craft that he witnessed floating above his taxi. Although several possible explanations were suggested in the re-
fect, police forces and air traffic control centres were advised to no longer report UFO sightings to the MOD. An official statement was also released; “The Ministry of Defence has no opinion on the existence or otherwise of extra-terrestrial life. However, in over 50 years, no UFO report has revealed any evidence of a potential threat to the United Kingdom. The MoD has no specific capability for identifying the nature of such sightings. There is no defence benefit in such investigation and it would be an inappropriate use of defence resources. “Furthermore, responding to reported UFO sightings diverts MoD resources from tasks that are relevant to defence. “MoD will no longer respond to reported UFO sightings or investigate
Email Marc: marc@tenerife-weekly.com them.” Nick Pope, famous ufologist, journalist and writer of “Open Skies, Closed Minds”, his autobiographical account of his time working as the Ministry of Defence’s UFO desk officer, had this to say; “I hope people have as much fun reading these real-life X-Files as I had working on them. “These documents don’t resolve the UFO mystery, but they certainly show how the phenomenon was just as intriguing to the Government as it is to the public. “These are the real-life X-Files. Most UFO sightings had conventional explanations, but a small percentage remained unexplained. “These included cases where UFOs were seen by police officers, chased
by pilots and tracked on radar. “Whatever you think about UFOs, the release of these files shines a light on one of the most intriguing subjects ever studied by the British Government”.
Canary Islands own X-File
As I’ve mentioned before, the Canary Islands most famous UFO sighting in 1976, became the subject of a classified document by the Spanish Air Force which was declassified in 1994, although in 1977, an investigative journalist, J Benitez, obtained a number of military files and exposed then in a book on UFOs. The Sightings began at around
port, (Aircraft, missile tests, meteor shower amongst others) the event couldn’t be satisfactorily explainedOfficially, the object is recorded as being ‘Unidentified’ and the event is recorded as being ‘unexplained’. Finally in a strange coincidence, while telling my colleague from UXT (unexplained Tenerife) Peter Wing about the UFO sightings in 1976, he recalled a story his wife Sonia De Arcos had told him about when she was a small child in her father’s car in Tarajalejo Fuerteventura, when it suddenly stopped and wouldn’t start again, the same happened to the surrounding vehicles, and they witnessed strange coloured lights that seemed to emerge from the sea-Sonia was one of the hundreds of witnesses that night in 1976!!!

Investment Karma And Cultural for Puerto Diversity In Adeje de la Cruz Library http://englishtimeadeje.com/
The council has announced that it will invest 70,000 euros for equipment for the municipal library in Puerto de la Cruz, part of the Tenerife insular network of libraries.
The Vice President and Minister of tourism, Carlos Alonso, explained that this action “is included within the actions provided for in the modernisation plans for Puerto de la Cruz and it is hoped it will appeal to both residents and tourists who visit the town, providing a modern area with new technology provided”. The island director of culture and historical heritage, Cristóbal la Rosa, considered that “this new space will become a meeting point where, in addition to library, users can attend different activities”. De la Rosa says that this investment confirms the commitment that the Ca-
bildo of Tenerife has in maintaining the librarie’s policy made in the year 2000 at the start of the Insular network. The City Council of Puerto de la Cruz hopes this new space will become a centre for cultural and social occasions, which will offer quality services, and benefits that are reflected in the recommendations of international organizations, and the State legislation on public libraries. This new space, which will be open at least 45 hours per week, will feature four areas, which will host a reception area, administrative services, newspaper reading rooms, and multipurpose areas for children and teenagers.

The Buddhist Lama Tenzin Khenrab Rinpoche and the mayor of Adeje held a joint press conference in the Adeje Cultural Centre to announce details of the first Tibetan Buddhist Centre in South Tenerife.
The installation, which has actually been in operation since October of last year, was officially opened on the afternoon of Friday June 21st by Lama ‘Rinpoche’ (literally meaning ‘precious one’, used to address or describe Tibetan lamas and other high-ranking or respected teachers. This honour is often used within the Tibetan Buddhist culture, usually reserved for ‘Tulkus’ or recognised reincarnate Lamas and those who are recognised by the relevant authorities as venerated or highly regarded Lamas) with a conference that was free to the public, ‘Relations and Spirituality’, held in the Adeje Cultura Centre. Also present at the press conference was Adeje education councillor Andrés Pérez Ramos. Mayor Rodríguez Fraga said Adeje was delighted to welcome back the Lama, a man who is highly qualified and respected throughout the world. “Between him and the dedicated group of Buddhist followers they have guaranteed that Adeje can boast one of the few Tibetan Buddhist Schools that is linked directly to the Dalai Lama”. The mayor said he was delighted at this initiative, adding that it was a further demonstration of the true image of Adeje and its people, reflecting a modern, dynamic and intercultural society, open to ancient oriental teachings and philosophies. Tenzin Khenrab ‘Rinpoche’ will be the spiritual guide for the Ghe Pel Ling School of Tibetan Buddhist Studies, based in Torviscas, where the theory and philosophy of karma will form the general basis for classes, from which the influence of “good things over bad” through the actions of individuals are derived. Adeje’s mayor said the Buddhist Centre was now at the disposition of Adeje society, and would, he believed, encourage positivity and happiness without
velopment, a group of software development methods based on iterative and incremental development, where requirements and solutions evolve through collaboration between selforganizing, cross-functional teams. It was an open space format where participants decided what topics and subjects they wanted as round table discussions or workshops. One of the guests at the event was Benjamin Hoskins, European development director for eBay, who conducted a working interview from ITER in Granadilla.
Fotos Gerard Zenou people have to renounce any of their personal religious beliefs, because here in the West, Buddhism is seen as more of a philosophy or way of living than a religion. With this in mind he issued a general invitation to everyone to get to know the Centre and its teachings. For his part Tenzin Khenrab ‘Rinpoche’, who was assisted by a translator during the press conference, welcomed the cooperation of the mayor and the education councillor in facilitating the open of the school and their presence at the official opening ceremony. The Lama said the opening of the teaching centre was a welcome achievement and was thanks to the presence, in Adeje, of some of his past pupils and their belief that its establishment here would help Adeje and its citizens and South Tenerife in general. He spoke briefly of the philosophy behind Tibetan Buddhism and its simply
cause-effect karma, adding that the three principals behind the philosophy are “patience, compassion and love”, the three jewels of Tibetan Buddhism. “Of course I am like every other person in the world; I have my own character, and I get angry, but at all times I work to control that emotion, and avoid projecting it onto others. In our philosophy, contrary to Christianity, Islam or Judaism, there is no notion of sin. People are free to decide to be good or bad, but they must also accept the consequences which will arise as a result of their actions. In other words, if we commit bad deeds we will suffer, and if, on the other hand, we carry out good works, we will earn satisfaction,” concluded the Tibetan master who invited Adeje’s residents to come to the school and get to know first-hand a philosophy that sees all human drama as a direct reaction to past acts, good or evil.

Charmaine has more than 20 years’ experience of managing people and resources in the public and not-for-profit sectors. She was previously a consultant to local and central government organisations in the UK, specialising in public sector performance improvement. She has also developed and managed customer contact services in Nottinghamshire. She has a degree in Hispanic Studies from the University of Hull. Charmaine said: “I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to work with the British and Spanish communities and authorities in both Andalucia and the Canaries. I am very much looking forward to building on the existing great work undertaken by the Consulates to ensure that Britons living or visiting Andalucia and the Canaries continue to receive excellent support when they most need it.” Charmaine has lived with her family in Andalucia for the last eight years, first in Alpandeire and now in Ronda. Her engagement with the Spanish public health, administrative and education systems – as an expatriate resident - has given her an insight into many of the challenges and benefits experienced by those visiting or living in Spain. Dave Thomas, Consular Regional Director for southern Europe, said: “I’m very pleased
that we have managed to recruit such a high calibre new Consul. Charmaine has an impressive background in senior management and will play a strategic role in the further development of our consular services in Spain.” The Consulates that cover southern Spain are among the busiest in the world. The new Consul will oversee the work of teams in Las Palmas, Malaga and Tenerife, who provide onthe-ground assistance to British nationals. The region covered by the Malaga office sees some five million British visitors every year, and is home to around 350,000 British residents. The Consulates in Tenerife and Las Palmas, together with the Honorary Consul in Lanazarote, serve 3.5 million British visitors and some 85,000 residents. Charmaine Arbouin replaces Steve Jones, who is now managing the Foreign Office’s global Contact Centre programme.

Walking in the Tenerife Mountains and Forests of Agua Garcia A http://tenerifeislander.hubpages.com/hub gua Garcia is a mountain village in the north of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. It is surrounded by ancient laurel forests or laurisilva, as they are called in Spanish, and is a wonderful place for walking and exploring the countryside of the island.
Forest Trails
There are many woodland pathways and forest trails that you can follow and a very wide range of flora and fauna you can expect to see along the way. Such a good spot for those who like to combine their love of nature with rambling in the countryside is Agua Garcia that a book was published entitled El Bosque de Agua Garcia (“The Forest of Agua Garcia”). The authors Maria del Carmen Brito and Vicente-Lope Lucia detail the wildlife and wild flowers and trees you might find in the forests, as well as providing some suggested footpaths and maps of the area. Mt Teide, the highest mountain in Spain, provides a picturesque backdrop to some views over the forests.
Laurel Forest or Laurisilva
The evergreen laurel forests are some of the only surviving patches of this woodland still left on the planet. There are also large areas of “fayal-brezal” forest made up of Tree Heather (Erica arborea) and the Faya or Haya (Myrica faya), as well as plantations of Eucalyptus and Monterrey Pine (Pinus radiata) trees. How to get to Agua Garcia Agua Garcia is situated above Tacoronte and has the villages of Ravelo on one side and Barranco las Lajas

Cruz de Fune hermitage in the woods flowers of the Flor de Mayo (Pericallis cruenta). Look out too for the pretty white umbels of the large shrub or small tree known as Follao (Viburnum tinus ssp rigidum). The rare parasitic fungus Madre del Loro (Exobasidium lauri) produces its strange antler-like growths coming directly out of the trunks of laurel trees. It is a species that depends on these ancient forests. There are plenty of birds you will hear singing including the Blackbird (Turdus merula cabrerae), and if you are lucky you might even spot a rare Laurel Pigeon of either the species Columba bollii or Columba junoniae, both of which depend on the specialised forest habitat that survives here. There are plenty of woodland butterflies in the forests of Agua Garcia too and in spring you can expect to see the Canary Red Admiral (Vanessa vulcania) and the bright yellow Cleopatra (Gonepteryx cleobule). The caterpillars of this latter species feed on the shrub Buckthorn (Rhamnus species) and the adults look very similar to the British Brimstone butterflies.
on the other. The main road connecting them continues to El Ortigal and further onward to the Los Rodeos airport for Tenerife North. It is possible to get to Agua Garcia by bus from La Laguna on the service 054 or by taking the buses that travel along the TF-5 motorway and getting off at the junction for Tacoronte on one side and Agua Garcia on the other. The village of Agua Garcia is just a couple of kilometres uphill from the bus-stop but it is quite a steep climb if walking. Check the weather forecast before visiting Agua Garcia though and take appropriate clothing especially in winter and spring. It is in the mountains of the north of Tenerife and can get chilly and wet. It is nevertheless well worth seeing if you enjoy really beautiful forested

There are many endemic wild flowers and in spring you will see the bright yellow Canary Islands buttercup known as Morgallana (Ranunculus cortusifolius), the Canary Islands Foxglove or Cresta de Gallo (Isoplexis canariensis) with its reddish-orange flowering spikes and the purple-pink daisy-like
If you find the trail that takes you past the Recreation Zone for Lomo de la Jara there is a pathway that leads to the chapel known as Cruz de Fune. It is surrounded by woodland but is tended by people who show their religious devotion with flowers and other offerings. A large rose-bush that someone must have planted years ago grows in front of this shrine. Get a good map if visiting the forests of Agua Garcia and you should find plenty to enjoy there. There are caves too if you can discover where they are. The woods of Agua Garcia offer a very different side to Tenerife and are a wonderful place to explore on a day out.

Summer 1st Phase Of remodelling University El Medano Complete Courses THE remodelling of the central square of El Médano project has completed its first phase.
THE University of La Laguna, working with of the municipality of historic Villa de Adeje, is holding of the XXI Edition of the courses and workshops of the summer University Adeje, which will take place between 15th and 19th July.
A total of thirteen courses covering areas such as social and legal sciences, architecture, engineering, the hu-
manities and the Sciences of health, amongst others, will be part of this year’s academic programme, in order to encourage debate and reflection on the major challenges that our society and our student communities have ahead. The necessary connection between knowledge, society and company allows not only students but also residents who wish to participate, where the University opens its doors to the society that supports it.
The Mayor, Jaime González, has said that all of the work will be completed in the last quarter of this year and will retain the design of this public space so loved by residents and tourists. The municipality of Granadilla de Abona ended the first phase of the project of remodelling in the central square of the coastal Centre of El Medano. The Socialist Mayor, Jaime Gonzalez Cejas, accompanied by the services Councillor, Juan Bello Rodriguez, visited the area to see how the work will respond to the demands of the local population. Gonzalez Cejas stated that the work of improvement of this public space, which began two months ago, will be enjoyed this summer by residents, visitors and tourists in general. The work is to comply with “important” and “historic” requests made by locals. For his part, Rodriguez Juan Bello, pointed out that the remodelling would “retain the design, aesthetics and charm of the area, not only for the locals but also for the thousands of visitors that come to the coast every year”. Part of the remodelling includes replacing pavement, improving the perimeter wall and the surroundings of the square, as well as the garden areas.
Creams, Lotions and Potions by Forever Living
FOREVER Living don’t just offer a wide range of Aloe Vera gels to drink – we also have a range of creams to rub in to your skin – something for every occasion and irritation!
One of our most popular product is the Aloe Vera Gelly, specially prepared to moisturize, soothe and condition – a thick translucent gel that does not stain clothes, but absorbs easily in to the skin, to soothe minor skin irritation and soreness (such as sunburn!). It can also be used on the skin prior to ultrasonic treatment, or after electrolysis. From your bathroom cabinet to your first aid kit, and from the kitchen to the campsite, Aloe Vera Gelly is an ideal companion for skin that needs that little extra care. For sufferers of eczema and psoriasis apply our Aloe Propolis Creme, a rich blend of stablised Aloe Vera gel and bee propolis, mixed with other ingredients recognized for their contribution to healthy skin. Chamomile, one of nature’s best known skin care herbs, is also added to the mix. Vitamins A and E complete the formula, both recognized for their natural skin conditioning properties. This great cream leaves a protective barrier on the skin helping to maintain a healthy skin tone and texture. Living here in Tenerife, we are all aware of the damage that the sun can cause to our skin so make sure you apply our high protection (SPF 30) Aloe Sunscreen which enables you to get a suntan whilst safely blocking both UVA and UVB rays. This is a gentle, silky smooth lotion made with pure stablised Aloe Vera gel and rich moisturizers, but with a potent wa-
terproof formulation which retains the SPF up to 40 minutes of activity in water, moisturizing your skin and helping to prolong your tan. This cream is suitable for children and can also double up as an after sun lotion – two for the price of one! For those of you who prefer your sunscreen in spray format, then a quick squirt from our Aloe Sunscreen Spray with full UVA and UVB protection with SPF 30 will protect your skin from the aging and damaging effects of the sun. This also has the added benefit of extra water resistance to allow you to splash and swim without worry. Healthy summer skin has never been easier! Join us at the Origins Gym open day this Saturday 29th June between 11am and 3pm where our wide range of products will be on display.
Jaime González Cejas made it clear that the square would not be closed at any time and the work would be carried out with the minimum inconvenience that a project of this size can manage. It is hoped that the refurbishment of the
area will result in a boost in employment, make the area more attractive, boost the local economy and encourage entrepreneurial activity. The remodelling will also improve accessibility, security for locals and holidaymakers.

Timmy Mallet Haunted San raf Cats My Hen Night Appeal
YOU never know when your past will come back to haunt you, for bride to be Lisa Turner an embarrassing moment from her childhood caught up with her on her hen holiday in Los Cristianos.
At the age of eight Lisa from Manchester was a special guest of Timmy Mallett on his morning show Wacaday, but surely that is all forgotten now. Unluckily for Lisa her friends wouldn’t let it lie and dug out the footage, put it on a DVD and played it back on a big screen at The Merry Monk in the Apolo Centre. There was plenty of squirming as the loud, squeaky TV presenter subjected the young guest to studio games and a whack with his inflatable mallet. At least the flowing cocktails took the edge off the blast from her past. Just to make sure everyone paid attention there was a written quiz afterwards on pre prepared score sheets. No doubt the moment of TV fame will live alongside the wedding video and be wheeled out to raise a few more blushes in future years. Lisa’s hubby to be, Stephen Hill was present at the stroll down memory lane – well at least in inflat-

He continued to say “We have majored on our “Dream Holidays” for the under privileged and disadvantaged children and will continue to do so, however our charitable work has been called on in so many ways and we are working closely with the three local town hall Social Services departments who refer people in need to us for assistance in improving their daily lives. When hard times arrive, it is often the younger members of the community that fore go their aspirations and dreams. With this in mind we are currently looking at ways of creating a Tenerife Sur Lions Scholarship to enable a particularly bright student to undertake a university degree course, but who without financial support could not realize their potential and dream. Having recently funded a small group of girl athletes from a Los Cristianos school to take part in the Spanish National Championship, we realize the need to encourage children to keep fit and train, cut out alcohol and smoking and adopt a healthy lifestyle. To that end we are supporting several local sports initiatives.” He concluded by saying “I am committing our club to a furtherance of the ideals we have generated in recent years, remembering the Lion’s Motto “We Serve” The meal service followed with a Gala Dinner, a beautifully presented five course meal reflecting the hotel’s dining excellence which was enjoyed and appreciated by everyone, it being further enhanced by an excellent service of good wines and

With carriages at midnight another fabulous Tenerife Sur Lions President’s Night drew to a close. In particular to Beryl Sadler who designed and arranged the table decorations, seating plan and memento brochure, not forgetting the staff and management of the Paradise Park hotel with a special thanks to all the waiters and kitchen staff for whom nothing was too much trouble.

The puppies are easy to find homes for, ditto the small, the cute. But what about the ones that get overlooked? The older the dog, the harder it is to find a forever home.
No one wants to take on a dog only to find a huge vet bills lurking around the corner. But we believe every dog deserves a chance, so any dog over 10 years old we offer as a permanent foster dog. This means the dog stays legally ours and we pay all vet care and medicines. All he will cost you is food, a roof over his head, and your love for the rest of his life. He may be with you for years, we hope so,
or he may be with you for only a few months, but you will have given him love and stability at the end. It takes a special kind of person to do this, and we are looking for that person right now, to take our Bruno. He is 10 years old and has been with us nearly all his life. Obviously he is shy as a result, but a little TLC will sort that out. Can you give Bruno some happiness? If so, call Sue on 629 388 102.

Shelter From Extra Scholarships For The Storm La Laguna Students
“SHELTER From The Storm” is the theme for Saturday 29th June’s charity event at Beverly Hills Club, los Cristianos, from 2.00pm to 6.00pm.
Tenerife Family Church (TFC) has for many years helped those who are seeking a way out from homelessness and addictions, and until recently ran a house of hope in Granadilla, where, w o r king with other charities and the support from local communities, saw much success in recovery and rehabilitation. In recent conversations with well-known entertainer Gordon King about Bob Dylan, Bill Jeffrey (Pastor of TFC), took up Gordon’s invitation to arrange a charity event where local artists contribute their time and talent to raise money for those in need. THE Cabildo de Tenerife, through the Department of education, youth and equality, will allocate 50,000 Euros in scholarships to students of the University of La Laguna (ULL) experiencing special economic difficulties. This amount will be added to the grants available for the next academic year (2013-2014) at ULL, representing a total of around 121,000 euros, to provide scholarship support which aims to respond to the current needs of students on the island.
The initiative was been presented by the Minister of education, youth and equality, Miguel Angel Perez; and the Vice-Rector of students of the University of La Laguna, Miriam González. The insular adviser Miguel Angel Perez explained that “we have for several months been working with the Universidad de La Laguna to establish a means of collaboration the economic situation that some students are living under. The Council awards
1.8 million euros for Tenerife students who conduct studies off the island each year, but the current situation obliges us to establish this aid for Tenerife students studying at the University of La Laguna.” Miriam González thanked “the effort of the Cabildo de Tenerife had made supplying aid annually for students with economic difficulties. I want to thank the sensitivity the Cabildo has had with students and their families, because these grants are essential so that they can continue pursuing their studies”. The Vice-Rector of students of the ULL explained that “students eligible for this scholarship will
receive the monies at the start of the course, so that they will not have to pay for any tuition at the beginning of the term. Once we have budget, from January 2014, requests will be studied and if they are declared as beneficiaries, as they shall be exempt from all payment of tuition”. The University of La Laguna and the Cabildo traditionally work together developing close cooperation on various levels and within fields of action, in particular through the framework agreement for the development of joint action policies through which the university has launched several projects in different areas of teaching.

LOrO PArQUE BrEEDING BrEAKTHrOUGH
LORO parque Fundación and the University of giessen make a breakthrough in conservation breeding programs of parrots.
Many large parrots are threatened by extinction and species conservation breeding programmes may be of limited success due to infertile eggs. Scientists of the Justus-LiebigUniversity Giessen, Germany, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Clinic for Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians and Fish developed a novel method to collect semen in more than 100 psittacine species for the first time ever and to use this for artificial insemination for the successful production of offspring. The working group around Prof. Dr. Michael Lierz cooperated with the Loro Parque Fundacion Tenerife, to evaluate this novel method on more than 100 different species. In a first step the method, based on electro stimulation was evaluated and a novel cloacal probe designed. Using this technique, it was possible to collect parrot semen in one of the largest parrot collections in the world. Prior this development, routine semen collection in large parrots was not

possible. The Loro Parque Fundacion, Tenerife also supported this project financially. Now with the possibility of semen collection, parrot semen quality can be evaluated and the fertility of the males assessed. This is of enormous importance for species conservation breeding projects. Collected semen was also used for artificial insemination of endangered species, and females so far producing only infertile eggs successfully produced offspring. For the first time worldwide a macaw chick was produced using assisted reproduction techniques. This means that from now on, individuals which never had offspring before could be integrated into breeding programmes, enlarging the genetic base of such endangered species in the programs. This method was also used in the most highly threatened species (e.g. Spix’s Macaw Cyanopsitta spixii). The original scientific publication was published on the 25th of June 2013 in the Online Journal of the Nature.com group: Scientific Reports: http://www.nature.com/ srep/2013/130625/srep02066/ full/srep02066.html

IKEA customers in the south of Tenerife ask daily for IKEA shopping facilities without necessarily travelling to the north. The first step was to start online purchases through the website www.islas.IKEA. es, and now there is a physical Pick up Point in Las Chafiras. A Pick up Point is not a traditional IKEA store with direct sales. It is a Point where goods purchased at IKEA Tenerife through the website www.islas.IKEA.es or at the same IKEA Pick up Point are delivered. The Pick up Point is built for buying via touch screen kiosks, but also has specialized sales people so that customers can make any purchase. The IKEA Pick up Point, allows us to bring IKEA products to consumers in Tenerife south. All items shown in the Pick up Point are solely sample and cannot be purchased right away, but the purchases made before 10pm, will be ready for collection the next afternoon. Furthermore, in the IKEA Pick up Point has an exhibition of more than 2,000 of the 8,000 products from the IKEA collection. This Friday, at 10:00 am, IKEA officially inaugurates the new center with a ceremony which will be attended by the Mayor of San Miguel de Abona Don Valentin Gonzalez Évora and the general director of IKEA in the
Canary Islands, Balearic Islands and Caribbean Mr Tony Tavira. It is traditional in Sweden to inaugurate households by cutting a birch trunk. It brings good luck to the family and its future guests. Therefore, the opening ceremony includes the cutting of a birch trunk. The mayor has agreed to participate in this special way to open the doors of this new business. IKEA thanks the municipality of San Miguel de Abona, for the enthusiasm shown in the project and the support for the initiative and the growth of IKEA.

Benefits
NowAbout is a new service aimed at any business that wants to market and promote their services directly to the smartphones of both residents and visitors to the island.
The service consists of a Website, Mobile Website and Smartphone App, whereby a business of any shape or size can have an interactive mobile marketing presence. Many good businesses are struggling or not reaching their targets because potential customers are simply not aware of them and their location or reach competitors first who are spending more on marketing or who are simply geographically better located. In traditional marketing mediums, businesses are competing in a large and costly arena, where the company with the largest budget tends
to get the best exposure. NowAbout changes that. It is a Hyperlocal service, putting your business and services in front of a targeted market of customers, who are both nearby and are interested in your services and products. Every business receives the same service regardless. NowAbout is made up of three elements: a conventional website, a mobile website and a smartphone application. The conventional website provides two functions. Firstly it is an interface for businesses to create and manage their own account, promotions and marketing campaign. In addition the website can be used by consumers to view all venues, advertisements and promotions in the location of their choice. The mobile website again provides businesses with the ability to manage and change their advertisements and promotions whenever they wish, meaning they can update an offer or promotion using just their own smartphone without the need for a PC. For example a busy Bar/Restaurant may want to promote their breakfast offers in the morning, lunch deals later in the day, before offering their evening menu and entertainment offers. Alternatively a local electrician or plumber may wish to promote their services and offer discounts for work at quiet times of the week or month. The possibilities are endless. The Smartphone app is totally free to use and will be available to download initially for iPhone and Android phones in both iTunes and Google Play Stores on Friday 19th July. Windows and Blackberry phones will be supported prior to the UK launch of the service later this year. This new service will provide visitors to Tenerife with a onestop reference for their stay, whilst at the same time allowing businesses to market and interact with app users on a real-time 24/7 basis. Users of the app will have the ability to see what is on offer in Tenerife before they even come here, which will hopefully reassure visitors on holiday costs to the island.

Gibraltar row Over Double Murder And “Jet Ski Shooting” Suicide In Costa del Sol
THE Spanish government has flatly denied accusations that police fired shots while chasing a jet ski last Sunday in waters off gibraltar and has criticized Britain for giving credence to the story. As the dispute gained pace, Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo sent a letter to David Cameron, according to a statement by the territory’s government. In it, he complained that Spanish incursions into British territorial waters at Gibraltar “constitute a serious challenge to Gibraltar’s jurisdiction and British sovereignty”. Picard said Spanish military-linked Guardia Civil police shot at the Jet Ski inside British territorial waters, an incident he described as “dangerous and wholly unacceptable”. “Diplomatic action to date appears to have had no material effect and I fear that Spain will not be deterred by yet another verbal protest no matter how robust,” he said. “It is important that Spain feels the true weight of British reaction to continuing violations of our sovereignty.” Britain’s Minister for Europe David Lidington protested the “illegal incursion” to his Spanish counterpart during a European Union meeting in Luxembourg on Tuesday. And the British embassy’s number two in Madrid, Daniel Pruce, has demanded a “full explanation” from the Spanish foreign ministry. But a spokesman for Spain’s foreign ministry has said there was no shooting and expressed disquiet that Britain was repeating an “unverified and unfounded rumour”. In Gibraltar, the man reportedly at the centre of the incident, 32-year-old David Villa, told online news site Olive Press that he had been testing
his new jet ski with family and friends on Sunday when the Spanish police gave chase: “There were three policemen on the boat and I actually saw one of them with a gun in his hand,” he was quoted as saying. “I was just about to drop my friend off at West Beach when I heard the first shot.” On Tuesday, the Gibraltar Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) posted what it says is footage of the incident. The video shows a boat and a jet ski both visible. In an accompanying story published on their website, the broadcaster argues that shots are audible a few seconds into the footage. A member of staff at the GBC television newsroom said that the footage had been provided anonymously “by someone we know” but did not provide further information. In November, Spain and Britain summoned each other’s ambassadors in a spat over a series of naval incidents around the small but strategically situated territory. Britain has held Gibraltar since 1713 but Spain wants it returned and refuses to recognize British sovereignty over the waters off the land known as ‘the Rock’.
THREE members of one family have been found dead in a Spanish apartment in an apparent murdersuicide believed to be linked to the daughter’s disability. A note was left at the home on the Costa Del Sol, where the bodies of Sheila wood, her British husband, phillip, and her 20-year-old daughter Sophie were found dead in their rented apartment on the Costa del Sol on wednesday after an apparent murder-suicide. It is feared they may have lain dead for a number of days before being discovered.
The note, thought to be written by Phillip, said the daughter’s disability had become too much and had pushed them to the edge. The trio were found inside the apartment in Mijas, Fuengirola, were understood to have been long-term residents of the area, they were found by their landlord. It is thought the three died from gunshot wounds inflicted by one of the adults. The Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin confirmed the woman and their daughter were Irish passport holders. Officials are attempting to contact their next of kin. The Foreign Office in London said it was “liaising closely” with the local police and was ready to provide consular assistance. A Guardia Civil spokeswoman said the family were renting the property where they were found dead: “The latest information we have is that the owner of the house had not heard from the family for a few days and had not
been paid,” she said. “He went to the house today and when there was no reply at the door, he went inside. Inside he saw the man dead on the sofa and immediately called the Guardia Civil. When officers inspected the house they found the wife and the daughter dead in a bedroom. The initial hypothesis at this early stage of the investigation is that this was a murder-suicide.” The spokeswoman said she could not confirm reports that the daughter had Down’s Syndrome. Mijas is a popular town with a reputation for being family friendly with its many cafes and restaurants. Its centre is a typical Andalusian white-washed village, and the Britons’ crimescene apartment is on a pretty mountainside. The town has three distinct neighbourhoods - the village high in the mountain, a more modern development and an eight mile stretch of sea punctuated by pretty villages.

Mainland Spanish Data Protection News In Agency Goes After Google Brief The former head of Spanish savings bank Caja Madrid has been freed from prison after Madrid’s provincial High Court decided to shelve one of the investigations against him. Miguel Blesa, the first banker to spend time behind bars in Spain in twenty years, was arrested in May and held without bail after new information relating to Caja’s Madrid purchase of the City National Bank (CNB) of Florida in the U.S. came to light. Judicial sources said that Judge Elpidio Jose Silva had ruled that Blesa, who chaired Caja Madrid between 1996 and 2009 and left before it was merged with another savings bank to form Bankia, could leave Madrid’s Soto del Real prison immediately. Silva agreed with the Madrid court’s finding that a parallel investigation to the CNB one, relating to a 26.6 million euro loan made in 2006 to a Caja Madrid board member, did not need to be re-opened. Spanish police arrested a man who arrived in Madrid from Panama after they found two packages of cocaine hidden inside his prosthetic leg. Officers were watching passengers arriving at Madrid’s Barajas airport when they became suspicious of the man and decided to search him. They found two packages containing a total of 750 grams of cocaine hidden inside his prosthetic leg and arrested him. Spanish police say they have arrested eight people suspected of recruiting jihadist militants for al Qaedalinked groups in Syria. The Interior Ministry said the arrests were made in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, on the northwest African coast. A ministry statement said the group was suspected of sending dozens of potential fighters from Spain and Morocco to Syria, some of whom had carried out suicide attacks. It says others had been sent to training camps. The ministry said the group gathered recruits and provided them with the money and the means to travel abroad under the orders of al Qaeda. The identities of those arrested have not been released. Spain has put up for sale 15,000 buildings out of a total of 55,000 state-owned buildings in order to save money. The Spanish government has been studying the situation of these 55,000 state-owned buildings in order to see the possibilities of making a better use of them and save money to increase Spain’s central administration accounts. Media reports said the 15,000 buildings up for sale include eight or 10 “emblematic” constructions as well as land and houses whose sale will be used to remodel older buildings, apart from getting more liquidity and increase state revenue. Local media also reported that the government has been renegotiating 356 rental contracts in order to pay lower prices in an effort to save 40 million euros. Spain has acknowledged six of its players were robbed during the first week of the Confederations Cup, but is denying the theft took place at a team party. The Spanish Football Federation issued a statement responding to reports in the Brazilian media that the theft was connected to a poker party following a 2-1 victory over Uruguay in Recife nine days ago. The federation “categorically denies” the reports and called the allegations damaging to “the honour of the players and their family and friends.” Brazilian media, citing employees of the hotel and security officials, reported that women from outside the Spanish travelling party and alcohol were involved in the party at the team hotel. The Spanish federation said that “Six national team players were the subject of a robbery at the team’s hotel in Recife during the stay for the game between Spain and Uruguay in the Confederations Cup. This was reported in a timely manner to the Brazilian police.”
Spain has launched sanction proceedings against Google Inc. for suspected serious breaches of data protection laws. The Spanish Data Protection Agency said it found evidence of five serious privacy law breaches -- each punishable with fines of up to 300,000 euros. It also cited evidence of one minor infraction, which could be punished with a fine up to 40,000 euros.
The agency said it acted after investigating Google’s new policy, introduced last year, which enables it to track the activity of users across its search engine, Gmail, the Google+ social networking platform and other services it owns, including YouTube. The changes make it easier for Google to collect and process data that could be used by advertisers to target individuals with offers tailored to their specific interests, potentially thereby increasing the company’s revenue potential. Spain said Google Spain and Google Inc.’s new policy could allow it to combine personal information collected from different services and use it for other ends: “Google does not give clear information about the use it will make of users’ data, so they are unable to know precisely why their personal data is being collected or how it will be used,” the agency said in a statement. The data protection agency listed the suspected serious infractions as: • Disproportionate use of private data; • Diverting private data for other uses;
• Storing private data for excessive or undetermined periods; • Failure to handle private data in a legitimate way; • Obstructing users in the exercise of their rights. Google was also suspected of the minor infraction of failing to provide information to users. The Spanish agency said it investigated Google within the framework of a coordinated action with data protection agencies in Britain, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. The European Union warned Google in October 2012 that its data protection procedures did not comply with an EU directive on the subject and gave the company four months to change them. That deadline passed without any action, prompting
France to set up the task force of individual member states interested in pursuing the issue with Google. Last week France threatened Google with a fine of up to 150,000 euros if it does not bring its privacy procedures into line with French law on data protection within three months. Google has defended the changes it made last year on the grounds that they simplify and standardise its approach across its various services. But critics argue that the policy, which offers no ability to opt out aside from refraining from signing into Google services, gives the operator of the world’s largest search engine unprecedented ability to monitor its users. Google has repeatedly stated that its privacy policy respects European law.
According to investigators, the woman had been admitted to Alicante’s General Hospital on June 21st where she told medical staff she had suffered a miscarriage. She told police, who went to the hos-
pital to question her, that she had tried to get rid of the baby but had not had enough money to pay for an abortion. Investigators are also trying to determine whether she acted alone or if a third party could have been involved.
Baby Found In Spanish Drain
According to the Interior Ministry, a two-day old baby boy has been rescued from inside a building’s communal drain in the eastern Spanish city of Alicante. The new born’s 26-yearold mother has been arrested on charges of attempted murder.
The boy, who still had his umbilical cord attached, was found wrapped in plastic bags. He had been trapped at a point where the building’s drains converged into a one-square-metre manhole in a courtyard. The baby, who weighed 2.1kg (4.6 pounds), was reported in a serious but not life-threatening condition in hospital. He had suffered a fracture to a bone in one arm. The baby had other injuries which have yet to be detailed.

Angel Of Death Sentenced To 127 Years
J
oan Vila Dilme, dubbed “the angel of death”, a former security guard at a Spanish retirement home has been sentenced to 127 years in prison for killing 11 elderly residents, three of whom he forced to drink bleach.
He was found guilty of the crimes on June 12 by a unanimous jury decision at a court hearing in the northeastern town of Girona in Spain’s north east Catalonia region. The court sentenced Dilme to 127 years behind bars but specified that under Spanish law he can serve a maximum of 40 years in jail. Prosecutors had asked for a 194-year jail term.
Businesses are taking advantage of Spain’s economic crisis as advertisements are appearing on famous landmarks all over the country, Christopher Columbus’ statue has been wearing a Barcelona football shirt and a train station has been named after a mobile phone company.
The 47-year-old defendant, employed at the La Caritat home in Olot in Catalonia, was arrested in October 2010 after the death of an 85-year-old woman in a local hospital. He later confessed to her murder, saying he had made her drink bleach, along with the killings of two other elderly people, which he said were carried out in order to “end their
suffering”. Eight other murders, committed between August 2009 and October 2010, later came to light, with the
victims given overdoses of insulin or various fatal pharmaceutical cocktails in a case which has stirred high emotions in the country.

The defence lawyer said his client suffered mental problems, but the jury found no extenuating circumstances.
Landmark Advertising Sparks Heated Debate
“Advertising seeking controversy isn’t anything new ... what’s different here is the inventive ways local authorities are coming up with to make money,” said Manuel Martin, communication theory professor at Spain’s University of Navarra. Some Conservative politicians in Britain, for example, have suggested allowing sponsorship of London Underground lines and stations to raise money that could keep down fares. But allowing brands to associate themselves with public services and famous places is not without its critics. Protest group Ecologists In Action, for instance, says train stations should be used to promote cultural activities and that it is unfair to advertise to consumers where they might not be able to distinguish between publicity and information. But supporters say that using famous landmarks to advertise is a win-win situation at a time when money is tight for both govern-
ments and companies. Barcelona city council received 114,000 euros from Nike to preview football club Barcelona’s new shirt on the 60-metre high statue of Columbus. In Madrid, Vodafone will pay subway company Metro de Madrid 3 million euros over three years to rename the train station in the historic Sol Plaza, Vodafone-Sol. Line 2, used by more than 122,000 people every day which stops at Sol, will also be renamed Linea 2 Vodafone from September. It is the first time a company has sponsored an entire train line in Europe. New maps of the metro system will be made and distributed with the new name for the line and Vodafone will pay for it all. Metro de Madrid said the money raised would go to improving services, while the regional government described Madrid’s transport network as “a shopfront for 1.5 billion journeys a year” and said such advertising campaigns could help fund public transport.
Barcelona city council is reviewing its urban landscape regulations, making it unclear whether more such deals will be allowed. The Columbus promotion was only permitted due to the short period of time and the fact that it was also being restored. A spokeswoman said while urban planning rules would be modernised, nothing had been officially decided on advertising. But opponents are vowing to put up a fight. A group called “Cover The Brand” has set up a website with instructions on what size of paper is needed to cover the “Vodafone” brand on station signs and uploads pictures showing the brand papered over and covered by stickers. In Barcelona, the council’s decision to allow the Columbus statue to wear the Barcelona shirt also sparked fury in other clubs in the area, such as Espanyol, whose president described the move as “the straw that broke the camel’s back”.

S we go to press, nelson Mandela’s g r a n d d a u g h t e r, ndileka Mandela, told reporters outside his pretoria hospital that her grandfather is still in a critical condition - but he is stable: “we thank everybody for giving us support and praying with us ... we are anxious as you know he is critical but he is in a stable condition,” she said.
Mr Mandela’s eldest daughter Makaziwe said he is responding to touch and is “still there”. “I won’t lie, it doesn’t look good. But as I say, if we speak to him, he responds and tries to open his eyes. He’s still there. He might be waning off, but he’s still there.” President Jacob Zuma abruptly cancelled a trip to Mozambique, after making a late night visit to Mr Mandela in hospital. Mr Zuma “found him to be still in a critical condition”, according to a statement from the President’s office. It is the first time President Zuma scrapped a public engagement since Mr Mandela entered hospital on June 8. However, after vising Mr Madela on Thursday, Mr Zuma said: “He is much better today than he was when I saw him last night. The medical team continues to do a sterling job,” Mr Zuma said in a statement. Sources have confirmed that Mr Mandela was no longer able to breathe unassisted. Reports suggest that Nelson Mandela’s tribal leaders have been

told to prepare for the death of the former president, who remains in hospital unable to breathe without support. The advice comes after meetings with the family over the past two days. Senior tribal leaders - including Mr Mandela’s tribal heir, grandson Mandla Mandela - were expected to visit the hospital for further talks with family members. Mr Mandela is due to be buried, in a Christian ceremony in the Eastern Cape, a member of the tribal authority confirmed that the clan had been told that he is extremely ill and although it is against Xhosa tradition to even discuss the death of a living person, they should prepare for the worst. The 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader was taken to the Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital with a recurring lung infection on June 8, where he has now been treated for 20 days. US President Barack Obama arrived in Senegal on Wednesday to begin his first significant tour of Africa, during which he had planned to visit South Africa. The White House has said that it will defer to Mr Mandela’s family over whether the President would visit his political hero in hospital. However, South Africa’s foreign minister Maite Nko-
ana-Mashabane said that a meeting with the former South African leader would be impossible. The two men met in 2005 when
Mr Obama was a newly elected senator and the former South African president was in Washington and have spoken by telephone since.
They have not met in person since then, although Michelle Obama met with Mr Mandela during a trip in 2011.

www.tenerife-weekly.com Jane Austen, the author of Pride And Prejudice, Sense And Sensibility and Emma is a “clear candidate” to replace Charles Darwin on the new £10 note, according to Sir Mervyn King, the outgoing governor of the Bank of England.
It follows criticism that with Sir Winston Churchill earmarked to replace social reformer Elizabeth Fry on the £5 note in 2016, there would be no female figures on UK currency apart from the Queen. During his final public appearance, Sir Mervyn said Austen was “waiting in the wings” as the likely replacement for Darwin. He told the Treasury Select Committee the novelist had already been chosen as a “reserve” figure in case the Churchill £5 note suffered any “technical problems”. Sir Mervyn said: “Any time we produce a note there are always two notes we have running in parallel - the figure we are actually using and a reserve figure, so if there are technical problems with the first

Bloodhound Super Sonic Car Promotes Engineers Recruitment
A full-size replica of the British Bloodhound Super Sonic Car visited Downing Street this week. The 13m jet-and-rocket propelled car’s creators want to beat the current land speed record of 763mph in 2014 and become the first vehicle to exceed 1,000mph by 2015.
The appearance of the Sonic Car coincided with the Prime Minister’s announcing a move to recruit more engineers over the next five years in an attempt to avoid a skills shortage. Recruits will work through new and existing apprentice schemes before becoming registered engineering technicians. The scheme has been created
by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Gatsby Foundation. Current estimates suggest the UK needs to double the number of new recruits into engineering, construction and manufacturing by 2010 to avoid a severe skills shortage. Stephen Tetlow, chief executive of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, said: “The Institution and its partners are concerned that the number of people pursuing engineering careers is just not enough to meet the current and future demands of the engineering, manufacturing and construction sectors. To help UK companies succeed in this ever-growing competitive global marketplace, we need people with the highest professional skills and abilities. This initiative will ensure that the UK has a growing stream of Engineering Technicians being developed to a level that is recognised and respected around the world.” Professor Barry Clarke, President of the Institution of Civil Engineers, added: “If we want world class infrastructure, fit for the 21st Century, we must have a world class engineering workforce to deliver it. Engineering technicians - who exercise very specialist skills and techniques and solve complex problems - form a vital part of the skills mix and ultimately help to deliver projects efficiently and on time.” The Prime Minister met apprentices from a number of leading manufacturing and construction companies, including Rolls-Royce, Caterpillar and Perkins Engines. Pupils from Barclay School in Stevenage, who all hope to become engineers and scientists, were also at Downing Street for the event. The Bloodhound SSC project, which is sponsored by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, was launched in 2008 to help inspire the next generation of British engineers and scientists. The record attempts will be made in South Africa by Wing Commander Andy Green, the current world land speed and supersonic speed record holder.

note we can run with the second. That second figure often becomes a figure on the following note. The figure that we’ve been working with for two years, we’ve said already that it’s a woman - I can tell you it is Jane Austen. That clearly is a candidate for the £10 note down the road.” Some 50 Labour MPs and peers have backed a campaign to keep a woman on British banknotes. Plans have not been finalised for Churchill’s appearance on the £5, but they currently show his portrait alongside a view of Westminster with Parliament’s clock showing 3 o’clock. This was the approximate time on May 13, 1940, when he declared in a speech: “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.” British personalities have featured on the back of banknotes since 1970, and other figures have included Charles Dickens, scientist Michael Faraday and composer Sir Edward Elgar. The final decision on who appears on the banknotes will be made by Sir Mervyn’s successor, Canadian Mark Carney.
Vicar Leads Flash Mob Wedding Two newlyweds whose vicar led a flash mob dance routine at their wedding say they cannot believe how many people watched the video of the ceremony.
Gary and Tracy Richardson agreed to the flash mob after a “tongue in cheek suggestion” from the Rev Kate Bottley. The couple from Rotherham said they wanted to make the ceremony in Nottinghamshire joyous and memorable. Speaking from her honeymoon in the Seychelles, Mrs Richardson said the reaction was “bonkers” and “amazing”. “I really wanted a traditional wedding,” she said. “That was really important for us, to get married in a church, but we wanted to create something that our guests would remember. We wanted to show that church can be
a joyous occasion. It can be uplifting.” Over 100,000 people have watched online footage of the wedding at St Mary’s and St Martin’s Church, in Blyth. After exchanging vows, the couple and their guests danced to Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now), by C+C Music Factory. They went on to dance to Celebration, by Kool & the Gang. The idea came at a wedding preparation meeting between the vicar and the couple, who have been together for 11 years. The Rev Bottley, an Anglican priest, said: “I said ‘I’ve always wanted to do a flash mob wedding, ha ha ha, at which point Tracy said ‘That’s a great idea’. “Jesus’s first miracle was at a wedding and God loves a party. I think the right place for joy is in the house of God. There were about 30 people in on the act but it was contagious.”

T’S been up for sale for almost three years, and the price has dropped from an astonishing £4million to £3.75million, but former football star phil neville’s ‘mansion in the sky’ is yet to find a buyer. Now the 36 year-old is trying his luck in the rental market. Neville is now hoping to find someone willing to shell out £15,000 a month – £180,000 over a year – to live in the four-bedroom apartment until a purchaser turns up. It may well be opulently decorated, but it may not be to everyone’s taste. The apartment, which occupies three linked storeys 500ft up in Manchester’s 47-storey Beetham Tower, was decorated by Kelly Hoppen, interior designer to the stars, in a black and white colour scheme. It also features a bathroom themed on Disney’s Little Mermaid, while children’s bedrooms come with fairytale castle wardrobes. The 5,000sq ft apartment, named The Orchid

It also boasts a chandelier hanging over a spiral staircase, enclosed balcony areas, a gym, studio, limestone flooring, ‘intelligent’ lighting schemes and a shower which doubles as a steam room. The apartment also has his-and-hers dressing rooms and chutes which connect each bedroom’s laundry baskets to the utility room below. And while bedrooms occupy the top floor, most of the bottom floor is a custom-built playroom, created for Harvey and Isabella. The flat is being marketed by property management company City Centre Chic, which specialises in finding Manchester’s most luxurious homes for footballers and entrepreneurs. It has already had one star occupant - music mogul Simon Cowell, 53, who rented it while filming Britain’s Got Talent in Manchester. Founder and managing director Jennie Platt said: ‘This is definitely the most expensive apartment we have ever marketed - it’s like a mansion in the sky. This is in a prime location and on another level of luxury. We have had quite a few enquiries about this property since we put it up for rent but have yet to find a tenant. Because of the transfer window, this is one of the busiest times of year for us in terms of new players, managers and football executives coming to Manchester.’ Neville spent almost £4million on a palatial new home in Cheshire’s sought-after village of Hale in the heart of Footballers’ Wives country; it was revealed in August 2011.
The six-bedroom detached new-build mansion was on the market with local agents Gascoigne
Halman and includes a cinema, gym, sauna, steam room and large garage.

Star Trek Team Grand Canyon Ashes Sent To Space High Wire Walk
THE remains of gene Roddenberry, who conceived the original 1960s TV series Star Trek, will head for the final frontier alongside the ashes of James Doohan, who played Scotty, the starship Enterprise’s Scottish engineer, are to be sent to space.
Roddenberry’s ashes will also be accompanied by those of his wife on the November 2014 launch by memorial spaceflight company Celestis. They will be part of a cargo that includes other cremated remains, written messages and samples of DNA in capsules sent by the general public. “What’s very cool about this is that it’s science fiction meeting reality,” said Celestis spokeswoman Pazia Schonfeld. The remains will travel on a spacecraft called a solar sail, powered by sunlight and made to withstand high temperatures, and head for orbit around the Sun, according to the company. The journey
will be captured by on-board cameras on and streamed online. It will not be the first time the remains of Roddenberry, who died in October 1991 at age 70, and Doohan, who was 85 when he died in 2005, have been into space. Roddenberry was part of Celestis’ inaugural flight in 1997, when his remains were taken on a trip into space before returning to Earth. An urn containing some of Doohan’s
remains was also sent into space in 2012. Doohan became identified with the phrase “Beam me up, Scotty” in reference to the constant requests for him to bring people back on board the Enterprise. However the phrase was never actually used on the cult show. There is still room on the space flight, with the price for sending a loved-one’s ashes into orbit starting at £8,057.
DAREDEVIL nik wallenda successfully completed a high-wire walk across the grand Canyon without a safety harness. The Florida aerialist performed the quarter-mile crossing on a twoinch thick steel cable, 1,500ft above the Little Colorado River gorge in Arizona, broadcast live on the Discovery Channel.
The 34-year-old took just 22 minutes to finish the feat, kneeling twice to “get the rhythm out of the rope” and murmuring prayers continuously along the way. He stepped slowly and steadily most of the way, but jogged and hopped the last few steps. The father-of-three wore a microphone and two cameras, one looking down and one facing straight ahead. His leather shoes, which had an elk-skin sole, helped him keep a grip on the cable as he moved across. Mr Wallenda said he had wondered what it would be like to cross the Grand Canyon
since he was a teenager. The stunt comes a year after he crossed the Niagara Falls, the first to cross since 1896. Mr Wallenda is a seventh-generation highwire artist and part of the famous Flying Wallendas circus family who are no strangers to death-defying feats. His great-grandfather, Karl Wallenda, fell during a performance in Puerto Rico and died at the age of 73. Several other family members, including a cousin and an uncle, have died while performing wire-walking stunts.

Lost in And I Thought Translation!! Kanye Was A Stupid Name
The other day whilst flicking through a movie magazine I discovered that “Die Hard” was translated to “The Crystal Trap” in French-a reference to the glass skyscraper in Nakatomi Plaza where the action takes place, doesn’t quite have the same ring to it though does it?
This got me wonderingwhich other movie titles have been literally lost in translation? Here’s another great French Translation, Neo’s journey into “The Matrix” becomes “ The Young People Who Traverse Dimensions While Wearing Sunglasses” You only have to enter a video store in Tenerife to realise some movie titles in Spanish just don’t work: “The Dark Knight” was retitled “Night of the Knight” and in Mexico “Snatch” was “Pigs and Diamonds” and in Argentina “Grease” became “Vaseline”!!! Of course sometimes there’s a lucky accident, Denmark’s “Die Hard Mega Hard” is way cooler than “Die Hard with a Vengeance”! There are some that I just have no idea how they came up with the translation, such as in Japan “Evil Dead 3: Army of Darkness” became simply ......”Captain Supermarket”?!?! Germany must have known what they meant when they renamed “Dragnet” the slightly bizarre “Floppy Coppers Don’t Bite”! Some countries seem determined to give the plot
Rapper Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, famous for..... Erm.... Nope, haven’t got a clue- are the proud parents of a beautiful baby girl, born several weeks prematurely at 5.34 am on June 15th at Los Angeles Cedars Sinai hospital.
away, as with Italy’s “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind” less poetic title, “If you Leave me I Delete You”. Want to know if the whale in “Free Willy” survives? Then don’t watch China’s “A Very Powerful Whale Runs To Heaven”!! Anyone who’s ever bought something from the many Chinese stores over here has probably had a chuckle at some of the colourful translations on some of the products so I’ll leave you with some of my favourites from the great country of China: “Knocked up”.....”One Night, Big Belly” Jack Nicholson’s Oscar winner “As Good As It Gets” becomes simply “Mr Cat Poop” And finally, my absolute favourite-the classic British
comedy about unemployed miners who become strippers? Goodbye “The Full Monty”, hello .......”Six Naked Pigs”!!!!!

There had been a lot of speculation as to the gender of the baby which the couple had kept secret until Kim revealed it to be a girl during a doctor’s appointment on her reality show “Keeping up with the Kardashians”.... Oh right! That’s what she does!! It was assumed by many that the baby girl would receive a name beginning with a K, like her parents and her aunties; Kim’s reality star sisters Kourtney and Khloe (are these people dyslexic?)- instead, much to the bemusement of many, the proud parents, who announced their engagement a couple of days after the birth- have opted for the compass reading sounding “North West”. Poor Kid, mind you I guess the fact that her parents are successful attractive and STINKING RICH might make up for the fact that her name sucks! I personally think they missed out on an opportunity with that “ K “ thing-think of all the Kool names....Kellogs, Kerching, Kitchen, the list goes on and on, anyway Kongratulations Kim and Kanye (Khrist- they’ve got me doing it

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) says women with several close relatives who have developed breast cancer should be offered five years of preventative treatment with the drugs tamoxifen or raloxifene. Professor Gareth Evans, a consultant in clinical genetics at St Mary’s Hospital in Manchester who helped develop the new NHS guidelines, said: “This is a major breakthrough for women. This treatment is not just costeffective, but cost saving to the NHS. More importantly for women, they don’t have to go through the stress and trauma of a diagnosis, radiotherapy and potentially chemotherapy.” He said that preventing “four or five” breast cancers will result in one life being saved. Around 50,000 women and 400 men develop breast cancer in the UK each year. Currently those with a family risk of the disease
are offered either more intensive screening, or surgery to remove their breasts. But the new guidelines offer women a middle way. Dr Caitlin Palframan, from the charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said the guidelines were a “game-changer”. “We think more women will have more options to reduce their risk, which ultimately means we will prevent more breast cancer cases,” she said. The guidelines also call for more women with relatives who have developed the disease to be tested for faulty BRCA genes. Actress Angelina Jolie recently opted for surgery because of her inherited risk. Breast cancer prevention has been thrown into the spotlight after she revealed that she had had a double mastectomy because she was at high risk of developing the disease. Testing had showed she carried the genes that increase the likelihood of developing breast and ovarian cancers.

Sharples in Session By John Sharples
Wait ‘Till Your Father Gets Home Do parents still discipline their children in the same way as they did years ago when I was a child? I wonder if those classic lines have been handed down to the next generations. Here are some of the old favourites that would strike fear into my heart when I was a kid in shorts. 1. “Do you want a thick ear!” 2. I get so annoyed when I see photographs of Victoria Beckham. She can be such a miserable article at the best of times.
She has all the money that she could ever need beautiful children and a husband that
half of the world’s population would give their right arm for. She smiled this week whilst in China! The fact that she smiled made world headlines. Says it all really doesn’t it? Now, if we could just get the Queen to stop frowning and sticking her jaw out, the UK would look a much more inviting place!

Oh Yes, It’s Ladies Night
The super moon came and went on the night of San Juan. Where I live, the smoke from the bonfires managed to obscure it for most of the night, however I woke up during the night and saw it shining through my bedroom window.
I crawled out of bed and went onto the roof garden to see it. I was expecting it to look a lot larger than that. Maybe the press got a little overexcited about it. Nevertheless it was nice to stand
there looking at the moon shining right above Mount Teide.
If you missed it, the next one will be on August 10th 2014.
Something New Please
Ladies nights have been popular for a couple of decades in the UK, but they are relatively new to the folks who live in the towns of Tenerife. You know the type of thing that I mean… a night of madness with male strippers, cabaret, food, drink and a room full of women.
Last week, on an otherwise quiet night in Orotava, in the north of the island, somewhere up the side of the mountain, Spanish women of all ages descended upon the restaurant “Balcon de higa” for a crazy night of fun, the like of which they had never seen before. Excellent vocalist and entertainer Tere Melia hosted the event whose mixed age audience included 91 year old Isabel who said that
she couldn’t wait for the next one. The room went wild when the male strippers Fran and Tana took to the stage. The organisers Tinixara Reyes, Ruben Cruz and Ronmer Duque couldn’t believe how successful the event was and the women were booking for the next event before they left. I get annoyed when peo-
ple say that the Spanish sense of humour is different to ours. I don’t think that is true at all. The Spanish love naughty jokes, irreverence, sarcasm and double entendre. It just goes to show you that there is very little difference between us, whatever our nationality, whatever our age; we all want to have a good time.
This week, the musical Grease comes to Tenerife. I am looking forward to seeing it in Spanish and I have had my tickets for some time now. Over the New Year “Les Miserables” will be playing in the capital, Santa Cruz and only last week, the Estrellas school put on the popular show “Hairspray”.
There is no doubt that musical theatre is alive and well, although it appears to me that the powers that be may finally be running out of new ideas. Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory is about to open in the west end and over the last few years they have converted the songs of Abba into a hit musical. Miss Saigon is returning to London’s theatreland and “We will Rock You” is churning out old Queen songs. The movies Billy Eliott and Matilda are movies that have been converted into musicals. I love the work of Andrew Lloyd Webber and I hope that the great man’s new musical about the Profumo scandal will be a big hit for him, instead of all these converted movies or shows made up from old pop songs pieced together to fit a story.

Berlusconi “Guilty”
F
ORMER Italian prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi claims he is “absolutely innocent” after being found guilty of paying for sex with an underage prostitute. The 76-year-old was sentenced to seven years in prison and banned from holding public office by a panel of three judges in Milan.
He denied having sex with Karima El Mahroug, also known as Ruby the Heart Stealer, after what prosecutors claimed were erotic “bunga bunga” parties at his lavish villa in 2010. “I was truly convinced I would be absolved because there was absolutely no possibility of being found guilty based on the evidence,” he said. “I intend to resist the persecution because I am absolutely innocent and I don’t want to abandon my fight to make Italy a truly free and just country.” During his trial, the court heard dozens of young women, including Miss El Mahroug, who was 17 at the time, were paid with cash and cars to attend Berlusconi’s parties and dance semi-naked for him. Berlusconi was also found guilty of
abuse of office by arranging to have Miss El Mahroug, now 19, released from police custody when she was arrested on suspicion of theft. His defence claimed he believed the dancer was the niece of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak and wanted to avoid a diplomatic incident. His lawyer, Niccolo Ghedini, confirmed an appeal would be lodged, describing the sentence as “beyond reality” and “completely illogical”. “The judges even went beyond the prosecutors’ request for a sixyear sentence,” he added. Berlusconi has always insisted he is being persecuted by judges as part of a political plot. Even before judge Giulia Turri and her two female assistants returned their guilty verdicts, he told friends his guilt was a “done deal”, insisting he had no chance of a fair trial because of the political bias. Berlusconi, who was not in court for the verdict, now has two levels of appeal and cannot be jailed until that process has been exhausted. Under the Italian justice system, that could take several years. Last October, Berlusconi was sentenced to four years in prison for tax fraud connected to his television channels. That case is now heading to Italy’s highest court for a final appeal, after his defence team failed to have the verdict overturned at the constitutional court.

gardening and Nature By Steve Andrews - aka Green Bard
Chinamada Cave Houses Have Gardens Too
You may have never heard of Chinamada and so are wondering where it is, what it is and what connection it has with gardening and nature. So let me explain. Chinamada is a very tiny hamlet in the north of Tenerife where all the houses are caves. It has been described as a “troglodyte community” which makes it all sound very primitive, but in actuality the cave-dwellers of this remote Anaga mountain village have modern facilities that people would expect today. There are just over 30 houses and they all have windows and doors, some have Satellite TV and all have electricity. They have pathways and numbers for each house, the road has street lighting and rubbish gets collected just like elsewhere on the island. Chinamada has a small church with a square and even a bar restaurant that is appropriately built around a cave and aptly named La Cueva. Some of the houses have small front gardens and look very smart.
Chinamada path to Punta Hidalgo
Chinamada house with garden There were none for sale or rent when I visited Chinamada and I was impressed with well-kept and up to date the village looked. I had had visions of people living a lot differently to what I discovered. At least one of the gardens had a couple of Dragon Trees, and there was another one I saw growing that was clearly the village’s Drago. It might even be a wild specimen. It grows on a rocky bank that overlooks the road, and like so many Dragon Trees has its own individual character with its well-worn trunk and exposed roots that twist and turn looking for moisture. The easiest way to get to Chinamada is either by car or by bus. Service number 075 runs from La Laguna to Taborno which is another remote mountain village and is bestknown for its very unusual rock pinnacle that towers over the countryside. Take this bus but get off in Las Carboneras, the village before the service reaches its final destination. Las Carboneras is surrounded by
sweeping valleys, ravines, mountains and evergreen laurel forests. If you enjoy walking, getting away from it all, and taking delight in the unspoiled natural scenery of the island then it makes a great starting point for a hike. Before you set off further you might fancy something to eat and drink, so look no further than the Tesegre restaurant and bar. It comes with my recommendation as a great place for a good selection of cheap but high quality typical Canarian food. A road sign not far from this eating place tells you that Chinamada is just 2.4km away. The walk along the quiet road is an interesting one with views over the steppe valley below and you will see some of the first cave houses set back from the road and built into the rocky cliffs. After you reach Chinamada itself and have had a look around you begin the real trek that eventually ends in the coastal village of Punta del Hidalgo, which as it happens, was once said to be a good place for UFO sightings. A couple in a parked car reported seeing a landed craft and alien beings and after that skywatches were held at the location. I am trespassing a bit into fellow columnist Marc Craig’s territory there, seeing as he usually writes about the paranormal and unexplained mysteries of the island! So back to the walk, which is clearly signposted to our destination in Punta del Hidalgo and is 4.4km away. It is an easy enough hike though because most of it is on the level or downhill with not too steep a gradient. It should take you between two and three hours. The pathway skirts the top of a ravine and on the other side is the cliffs that look out over the sea. Those interested in the wild flowers of the island can look out in spring for the White Viper’s Bugloss (Echium simplex). This is one of the few locations where this rare plant still grows in the wild, although it is often seen in gardens and parks. Like the closely related Red Viper’s Bugloss (E. wildpretii), which is also very rare and is only to be found growing wild up on Mt Teide,
The Taginaste Or Echium Species Of Tenerife
Tenerife has a lot of different species in the genus Echium with the most famous being the Red Viper’s Bugloss or Taginaste Rojo, as it is known in Spanish. This is the rare wild flower with the tall red flowering spikes that are often depicted in paintings of Mt Teide. Taginaste Picante (E. auberianum) is another rare species that grows only up on Mt Teide. It is a much smaller plant and has blue flowers. Echium giganteum forms large bushes and has white flowers. The species E. aculeatum is like a miniature version and is found around the Santiago del Teide area.
Chinamada drago
E. virescens also grows into bushes but it has pinkish or blue flowers and is found in forested areas and on mountains. There is a blue-flowered Viper’s Bugloss (E. vulgare) that grows in the UK. this white-flowered Echium species starts off with a rosette of leaves that produces a tall flowering spike that gets covered in flowers and bees. All of the plants in the Echium genus are very popular with pollinating insects. Look out too for another white-flowered Bugloss because E. leucophaeum can also be found along this path and on the cliffs there. It grows in the form of a tall and bushy shrub. Enjoy your walk down into Punta del Hidalgo, and with a bit of luck there will soon be a bus to take you home.
Chinamada’s La Cueva
Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.
He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

record Breaking Torch relay
THE Olympic torch will make its first trip into space later this year ahead of the Sochi 2014 winter games. Russia plans to send the torch to the International Space Station on board the Soyuz TMA-11M manned spaceship in early november as part of a record-breaking relay.
Russian cosmonauts Sergei Ryazansky and Oleg Kotov plan to take the Olympic torch on a spacewalk, however the flame will not be lit during the trip. Sochi 2014 chief Dmitry Chernyshenko said: “Nobody has done this before. The spacewalk by two Russian cosmonauts with the Sochi 2014 Olympic torch will be an historic moment in the history of the Olympic torch relay. I want to thank the Federal
Space Agency for its support which will enable us to take the Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay to the final frontier.” There are also plans for the torch to be taken to the foot of Lake Baikal, the world’s biggest and deepest freshwater lake. The four-month torch relay, which starts in Sochi on October 7, will be the longest Olympic torch relay in Winter
Panda Escape
RUSTY, a red panda eluded zoo officials for hours after he mysteriously escaped from a zoo in washington. He was finally found in a tree in an area known for its restaurants and vibrant nightlife after he went missing from the Smithsonian national zoological park. A Twitter photo and tip-off from a resident helped zoo keeper’s track down the pesky panda. How he escaped is still a mystery and zoo officials are surprised that he ventured so far, red pandas are usually highly territorial. Security footage is being examined to see if he may have been taken by a human and then set
Games history. It will travel more than 50,000 miles (80,500km) including by car, train, plane, troika and reindeer sleigh. More than 14,000 torchbearers will carry the torch through 83 Russian regions, and it is estimated that around 90% of the Russian population will be within one hour of the torch at some point on its journey.
free. Either way, it appears he was eager to explore his new city after arriving from a Nebraska zoo in April. Senior curator Brandie Smith said: “There is no obvious point that Rusty could have gotten out of the enclosure. We all know that young males like to test boundaries.” Unlike giant pandas, red pandas are not members of the bear family. Red pandas are slightly bigger than a domestic cat and look similar to a raccoon. They are listed as vulnerable in the wild and native to China. Scientists believe about 10,000 of the animals remain. They grow to about 42 inches in length, including their long, bushy tail, and weigh between 7lb and 14lb, according to the zoo’s website. The Smithsonian National Zoo is home to two red pandas, and, they are both still there!

K’iche’, Quiché or Frittata
Quiche, who doesn’t like it? It’s really simple and filling and great for a lunch, dinner, picnics or to stick a slice in your loved ones lunch box! It can sometimes be difficult to get hold of a pre-baked pie crust here so if not, buy some ready-made pastry and line a pie tin; then gently blind bake it (with no filling, Ingredients: 1 X 9 inch ready baked pie crust 250g English cheddar, grated 4 tomatoes sliced 200g Bacon, chopped 5 eggs, beaten 100ml milk 200ml double cream Salt Freshly ground black pepper 2 sprigs of fresh thyme
lined with a piece of baking paper) for about 12minutes on 160°c then allow it to cool. I have been very lazy in the past and poured the mixture straight onto the uncooked pastry and slowly baked it, but you must adjust the oven temperature to allow the bottom of the pastry to cook through and give
Method: Preheat the oven to 180°c Sprinkle the cheese into the pastry base and add the sliced tomatoes. Fry the bacon pieces until crisp and sprinkle over them over the top. Combine the eggs with the milk and cream in a bowl and season well. Pour over the bacon and cheese. Sprinkle the thyme over. Bake for 30-40 minutes or until set. Remove from the oven and allow to cool and set further.
Quiche Lorraine Frittata - The Crustless Quiche! Ingredients: 8 rashers smoked streaky bacon chopped into pieces 8 eggs 4 tomatoes diced 200ml milk 50g strong cheddar, grated Salt and pepper to season Method: Heat oven to 180°C. Put the Bacon into a large frying pan and cook over a gentlemedium heat. Stir occasionally until golden and beginning to crisp up. Line a roasting tin, about 20 x 28cm, with baking parchment – just scrunch it roughly at the corners. Whisk together the eggs and milk in a large jug or bowl,
then stir in the bacon and tomatoes, plus any fat from the pan, the cheddar and some seasoning. Pour into the tin, scatter with a bit of extra grated cheese, if you like, and bake for 30-35 mins until golden and set.
it a little more cooking time – it works a treat! Also for the health conscious readers, I have included a Frittata; quite simply a quiche without the pastry. Don’t be shy to use whatever fillings you want, I have only used these as a guideline. Happy Cooking!

Motorists risking Safety By Ignoring Tyres MOTORISTS are risking their safety as more than half “do not carry out any form of tyre maintenance”, a survey has revealed.
This is concerning as tyres are more important than some people assume. Consider this: a vehicle is travelling at 120kph on the motorway. It is carrying a family of five and the boot is full of heavy luggage. Despite the car’s prestigious badge, cosy seats and fancy electronics the only parts that touch tarmac – and therefore ensure it sticks to the road - are the tyres. Furthermore, as these constantly revolve only a small part of each hits the tarmac at one time – and of these large chunks have been removed to form the tread that clears rain water, etc. The car’s touch-point with the surface is therefore extremely small. Despite this the motorist expects the tyres – without exception – to smoothly translate the engine’s power into momentum and to help the vehicle brake and steer. These tasks must be performed in conditions such as extreme heat in the summer and rain in the autumn. As such, drivers should frequently check their tyres are fit for purpose. How To Check Tyres Checking a tyre is straightforward and requires very little knowledge. The first consideration is the pressure which influences how the car corners, brakes, rides, and steers. Incorrect pressure – either too high or too low - can also damage the tyre. The correct pressure can be confirmed via a sticker that

is often located on the driver-side b-pillar. If not, refer to the manual. Remember too that cars often require different pressures at the front/back and while heavily laden. The next consideration is tread depth. The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central 75% of the tyre’s width, and around its circumference. This can be checked via a gauge or the wear indicators that (most) tyres have within their tread. However, to maintain the vehicle’s performance it is best to replace a tyre when its tread hits 3mm. Furthermore, check for consistent wear. The left side, for example, should wear fairly evenly with the right. If not, this indicates a (possible) problem with the car’s tracking that should be rectified. Also, check for tears, punctures, bulges, and cracking that might compromise the tyre’s integrity. Plus, of course, if there is any doubt that the tyre is fit for purpose have it checked via a mechanic.
Nissan Micra
nISSAn have made some significant updates to the popular Micra and these changes have been made to the exterior and the interior, so a new chapter for the Micra has now begun.
If you look at the new Micra the entire face has changed, there is a new grille which sports the Nissan circular badge which is held within a chromed extended V-shaped motif. The bonnet, wings and headlamps are also new as is the front bumper so things are very different. The front fog lamps have a new shape and chrome surround bringing the Micra very up to date. The changes are obviously not small and are extremely distinctive, the rear of the car has not been left out, and there is a redesigned bumper and new LED tail lamps plus a panel at the

your Face sounds Familiar Editor Recommends ITV 1 - 19:30 - 20:45
Alesha Dixon and paddy Mcguinness host Your Face Sounds Familiar, a celebrity entertainment series with a comedy twist.
This fun-filled new format will challenge six celebrities: comedian and presenter Alexander Armstrong; Olympian Denise Lewis OBE; entertainer Bobby Davro; Emmerdale actress Natalie Anderson; presenter Matt Johnson and actress Cheryl Fergison to perform as different iconic music artists every week before a panel of judges, including Julian Clary and Emma Bunton. In a show that takes making a good impression
quite literally, each of our regular cast of celebrities will be transformed into a different legendary singer, and perform an iconic song and dance routine from that artist’s catalogue every week. But in a unique twist, the celebrities will have no control over who they will perform as on each show. Instead, they’ll have to face the Your Face Sounds Familiar ‘Randomiser’ at the end of each programme to decide who they’ll be becoming the following week. Whether it’s an older or a younger artist, or even a star of the opposite sex, the ultimate decision is down to the Randomiser, guaranteeing hilarious and dramatic results.

The Hungry sailors ITV 1 - 14:00 - 15:00
Father and son cooking duo Dick and James Strawbridge take to the high seas again in a new, second series of The Hungry Sailors.
Following on from the success of their first series last year, Dick and James set off on-board the 45foot pilot cutter The Morwenna for a culinary voyage around the coastlines of South West England, taking in the Channel Islands and the Isles of Scilly along the way. Throughout their journey they will be tasting the very best in local food and meeting the producers who are putting the Westcountry on the map.
43
They’ll be cooking in their galley kitchen and onshore too – whether it’s on the beach or on the quayside, Dick and James will be demonstrating a host of new recipes inspired by their travels and the food they’ve discovered. However, they have to work for their supper, so amongst other things, they dig for clams, dive for mussels, shear sheep, herd ducks and help pilot an enormous tanker out to sea. And as ever they get out their tools and cobble together classic Strawbridge contraptions such as their own crab cracker, a homemade rotisserie, a sushi roller and ice-cream maker.

Me and My Guide Dog ITV 1 - 20:00 - 21:00 An exploration of the unique relationship between man and his best friend; from the birth of a litter of puppies, through guide dog training, to placement with those who need them most.
With exclusive access to The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, this heart-warming film, narrated by dog-lover, Paul O’Grady, highlights the difference guide dogs make to people’s lives. For the past 80 years, the Association has been matching the visually impaired with their canine guides in life-changing partnerships.
45
From Steve Cunningham, the world’s fastest blind man, who drives racing cars at high speed, to newly-engaged Mark and Claire who were brought together by their guide dogs’ own romance and Liverpool-based 24-year-old Lynette Proctor who’s undergoing guide-dog training with her first guide dog Pippa. We hear the heartfelt stories of the difference dogs can make to the lives of those who cannot see for themselves. Every hour, another person in the UK goes blind. When someone loses their sight, guide dogs ensure they don’t have to lose their freedom as well.

Premier League 1997 Tour de Block Streaming France Winner Website Admits Doping
InTERnET service providers in the UK could be forced to block a Swedish-based website which streams live football matches. The premier League is in the process of requesting a court order that would make ISps effectively ban their customers from accessing www.FirstRow1.eu.
The planned legal action by the football governing body follows moves made by the music and film industries. They have successfully blocked websites which offer the opportunity to download copyrighted material, such as Pirate Bay, under Section 97 of the 1988 Copyright, Design and Patent Act. The Premier League has agreed a new worldwide television deal worth around £5.5bn over three years, starting in the new
season. BT has paid £246m to the Premier League for three years and BSkyB, the parent company of Sky News, has invested £760m in its football coverage for the next three seasons. The Premier League has written to the major UK ISPs, which also include Virgin Media and TalkTalk, outlining plans to apply for a court order to block www.FirstRow1.eu. The proposals are expected to be put forward by the end of the month. If the court order is granted, the ISPs would then have to contest the application, or comply and restrict access, although it is understood that indications are the ISPs have no plans to go against any such application. The Premier League has for many years monitored various websites during live matches and enforced the removal of any streaming content which breaches copyright.
Manager Sacked On Live TV
A ‘SURpRISED’ gus poyet found out he had been sacked as Brighton manager while appearing as a football pundit live on the BBC. The Uruguayan was appearing on a programme covering the Confederations Cup match between Spain and nigeria. Poyet, 45, found out about his dismissal when the show’s staff handed him a copy of a club statement during the first half. The programme’s host Mark Chapman read out the statement about the sacking in the halftime break. The club had announced the dismissal, which had not been unexpected, on their Twitter feed. Poyet said: “I think the BBC have a great story forever, because a manager getting information that he is being released from his employment by the BBC is quite surprising. I have had no communication, no texts, no email. I didn’t receive anything on my phone so it is all up to you and the timing. The only thing I’m concentrating on is the appeal. I will appeal because it’s the right thing to do.” The statement claimed the club had informed Poyet of the decision, which he refuted. After the match ended, Poyet re-appeared
on screen and revealed the Championship side had subsequently made contact. In the statement, Brighton said Poyet’s three-and-a-half-year tenure had been terminated following a decision by the Seagulls’ internal disciplinary panel into a, so far, unidentified matter. It said: “Gus Poyet has been
TOUR de France winner Jan Ullrich has admitted to doping, with help from a Spanish sports doctor at the centre of a major drugs scandal. Ullrich, the only german to win the world’s toughest cycling race, was found guilty of doping in 2012 and banned for two years.
He later admitted to having had contact with Dr Eufemiano Fuentes, but he consistently denied being illegally assisted by him. However, the 1997 Tour champion has now revealed he “received treatment” from him, and admitted undergoing blood doping procedures. His remarks come just a few months after a similar public announcement by his greatest rival and nemesis Lance Armstrong. In January, the seven-time Tour de France winner admitted to doping throughout his career and was subsequently stripped of his Tour titles. Ullrich, 39, said in an interview: “Yes I did undergo Fuentes treatments. Almost everybody back then took performance-enhancing substances. I didn’t take anything which the others were not taking. For me, betrayal only begins when I gain an advantage, but that was not the case.” He said he was motivated by the desire to be competing on a level playing field with his
main rivals: “In my view you can only call it cheating on my part when it is clear that I have gained an unfair advantage,” he argued. “That was not the case. All I wanted was everyone to have the same chances of winning. I’m not better than Lance Armstrong but no worse. The great heroes of the past are today people with flaws with which we must cope.” Ullrich, who also won gold and silver medals at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, added he used his own blood for the treatment. He was barred from the Tour de France in 2006 amid speculation he had used illegal substances. He retired from cycling in February 2007, denying he had ever cheated. In February 2012, he was found guilty of a doping offence by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and retroactively banned for two years from August 22, 2011. In addition to the ban, all results after May 2005 were removed from his list of achievements. Dr Fuentes, at the centre of a much-publicised trial in Spain earlier this year, had told a court that as well as cyclists, his clients included football players, athletes, tennis players and boxers. The Operation Puerto scandal broke in 2006, when Spanish police launched raids that uncovered more than 200 codenamed blood bags, some of which were linked to cyclists.
informed today by Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club’s internal disciplinary panel that his employment has been terminated with immediate effect. This followed his suspension, an investigation, and a subsequent formal disciplinary process. In line with the club’s own procedures, and UK employment law, Mr Poyet now has a right of appeal. As such, the club will make no further comment on this matter.” Poyet confirmed he would be appealing against the decision. Brighton have remained tight-lipped over the reasons for the disciplinary action against Poyet and he declined the opportunity to shed any further light on the club’s reasons for his dismissal. His feud with the club has gathered pace since Brighton suffered a play-off defeat
to Crystal Palace last month. Poyet, assistant manager Mauricio Taricco and Coach Charlie Oatway were subsequently told to stay away from the club in the wake of a disciplinary hearing, although Taricco’s ban has since been lifted. Poyet said he had not expected Sunday’s decision, which came after a disciplinary hearing had to be adjourned last week when he opted not to attend: “Not really. Today there have been plenty of phone calls between the representatives,” he said. “Everybody and the viewers can take their own conclusion about the way I have been informed. Are they messing with my career? We’ll see. I think it is too early to say. I’m looking forward to making sure we clear this.”

Mercedes Suspended
Mercedes have been suspended from participating in this year’s young driver test, after the FIA’s International Tribunal (IT) deemed that the private tyre test conducted by the team with Pirelli in Barcelona last month constituted a breach of the Formula One rules. Both Mercedes and Pirelli have also been reprimanded and they will each share the costs of the case equally with the FIA.
The test was the subject of a protest lodged by rivals Red Bull and Ferrari at the Monaco Grand Prix after it emerged that the three-day, 1000-kilometre session had
been run using Mercedes’ 2013 car, in contravention of the regulations, which prohibit the use of current cars for such tests. Although the IT found that Mercedes had broken Article 22 of the F1 sporting regulations, it said that there was no intention by the team to obtain any unfair sporting advantage and that both Mercedes and Pirelli had acted in good faith at all times.

Lawn Controversy At Wimbeldon
The All England Club has denied suggestions that the Wimbledon courts are too slippery, after seven players withdrew with injuries. Maria Sharapova fell three times and asked for a medical timeout during her straight-set loss to world number 131 Michelle Larcher De Brito.
Victoria Azarenka pulled out before her match with Flavia Pennetta because of a knee injury sustained during a slip in her first round clash. Richard Lewis, chief executive of the All England Club, rejected suggestions that the court surface was to blame for the injuries: “We have no reason to think this is the case. Indeed, many players have complimented us on the very good condition of the courts. The court preparation has been to exactly the same meticulous standard as in previous years and it is well known that grass surfaces tend to be more lush at the start of an event. The factual evidence, which is independently checked, is that the courts are almost identical to last year, as dry and firm as they should be, and we expect them to continue to

As for who could replace the 36-year-old at Red Bull, many pundits feel that Kimi Raikkonen is the favourite to partner Vettel. The Finn currently drives for Lotus, but his contract expires at the end of the season. Jean-Eric Vergne and Daniel Ricciardo, who both drive for Red Bull’s ‘junior’ team Toro Rosso, are also possible candidates.
Webber is known as a forthright character, an at-
tribute appreciated by the media but not always by Red Bull themselves. His relationship with Vettel, who has won three world titles in the time they have been paired together, has been fractious. It deteriorated during the 2010 season and was on full view to the world at that year’s Turkish Grand Prix, in which they collided whilst disputing the lead. That season brought Webber’s most serious title bid, however he ultimately lost out to Vettel, who became the sport’s youngest ever World Champion aged 23. The German has not been
the only source of frustration for Webber, who has felt Vettel receives preferential treatment at Red Bull, in particular from team advisor Helmut Marko - seen as the representative of owner Dietrich Mateschitz. Speaking on the podium after finishing second at Sepang, Webber said: “Seb made his own decisions today and will have protection and that’s the way it goes.” Rumours of a move to sportscars with Porsche started soon after. Webber has raced in the category before, for Mercedes in 1998 and 1999.
so that his head hit a rock, causing a concussion. Our primary duty is to support this man’s family and let the police carry out an investigation before we create rumours. We must protect the family.” The family of the victim asked race authorities not to disclose the competitor’s identity. News of the fatality left
the racegoers shocked, but the event continued, with Belgian Frederiek van Lierde taking first place. On the podium, the three winning triathletes held a minute’s silence out of respect. Ironman competitions are an extreme form of the triathlon. The event in Nice involved a 3.8km swim, a 180km cycle ride and running a full marathon (42km).
French Ironman Tragedy play to their usual high quality.” Andy Murray sailed into the third round with a victory over Lu Yen-hsun while defending champion Roger Federer was beaten by Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky, ranked 116 in the world. The tournament has been marked by the record-high number of withdrawals and the controversy over the courts. Sharapova was seen mouthing what appeared to be the words “this court is dangerous” during the match. Afterwards she said: “After I buckled my knee three times, that’s obviously my first reaction.” She described conditions on the court as “slippery” but refused to blame the lawn on Court Two, saying conditions were the same
for her opponent. Azarenka said: “The court was not in a very good condition. My opponent fell twice; I fell badly; there were some other people who fell after.” Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki also slipped and played with tape on her right ankle as she lost to Petra Cetkovska in the second round. Other players who pulled out were Steve Darcis, who defeated Rafael Nadal in the first round, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, John Isner, Marin Cilic, Radek Stepanek and Yaroslava Shvedova. The defeats of Federer and Nadal, and Tsonga’s withdrawal leave Murray with a relatively open draw as the Scot seeks to end Britain’s 77-year wait for a male champion at All England Club.
A 30-year-old British man died after crashing in the cycling section of the Nice Ironman event on the French Riviera. The man, believed to be from London, went off the road on a corner and crashed into a wall in Tourrettessur-Loup, inland from Nice. It is said to be the first death at any such event in France.
The man was said to have suffered a major head injury. A helicopter was sent to take him to hospital, but he died on the way. Competition organiser Yves Cordier said: “It was probably driver error that caused the athlete to skid,

But at 27-yearsold, Ayoze has been thrown an unexpected lifeline as the Cosmos return after leading the 1970’s football boom in America. Our man scored from a free kick in New York’s first pre season friendly, a 6-0 win at Newtown Pride FC in Con-
necticut. The squad has been pulled together from diverse leagues around the world but he has former Spain international Marcos Senna as his team mate. The first
MLS game is home to Fort Lauderdale Strikers on 3 August. It will be a strange experience playing teams with names like Carolina Railhawks.

Super Effort From Super Mario
It’s nice to see Tenerife athletes making an impact on the international sporting stage.
Last weekend Arona discus thrower Mario Pestano popped up on the BBC athletics coverage taking a silver medal for Spain in the European Cup competition in Gateshead. Super Mario warmed up by competing at the Arona Combined Events last month in Playa de Las Americas and was just edged out of gold in England by current Olympic and World champion Robert Harting from Germany.

Highs And Lows For CB Canarias Basketball Players
It may be the summer break but there was still plenty to think about for CB Canarias basketball players Nico Richotti and Richi Guillen.
Under Starters Orders For The Adidas Fun Run
Nico capped a fine season by making his debut for Argentina, they lost 83-77 to Uruquay but he put in a good performance scoring nine points including three rebounds. There was less happy news for locally born pivot Richi Guillen, he has been told he is not in the clubs plans for the teams second year in Spain’s elite ACB league. The 37 year old was pretty near ever present in the recent campaign playing in 30 out of 34 games, his fourth season with the La Laguna club. Guillen has no thoughts of retiring just yet and will look to add another club to the long list of clubs he has served well.
A High Powered Splash Of Ferrari Red And Yellow
The first Salida Ferrari introduced a dozen top of the range Ferrari’s to the people of Tenerife as it wound it’s way down the coast from Los Gigantes through Alcala, Playa San Juan, Callao Salvaje, Playa Paraiso, Costa Adeje, Las Americas, and Los Cristianos on Saturday.
There were plenty of admiring honks on the horns from other motorists as the Lamborghinis, Diablos, and Mondials cut a gleaming path through the afternoon traffic. Ending up in Calle Berna in Los Cristianos they parked up for four hours giving enthusiasts a chance to get up close and pose for photos. The polish and shine on the cars reflected their owners pride as they out dazzled the afternoon sun and many youngsters got their first taste of the Italy’s finest motoring dynasty while their parents coveted the sleek machines.
There’s plenty of time to enjoy a long lazy Sunday on the beach but before that a bracing run around Playa de Las Americas will stir the body and mind. This Sunday the Adidas Fun Run starts at 9am from CC Gala with the main event an 8.5 km run but categories for all ages and abilities.
Last year 500 runners took part and it promises to be at least as many this time. Those doing the full stretch are in the 16 to 24 age group, 25 to 40, 41 to 50, and 51 years and over. There’s a sliding scale of distances for the younger sprinters, it’s
400 metres for separate groups of 6 & 7 year olds, 8 & 9, and 10 & 11 years. The 12 & 13 year olds double up to 800 metres, and the 14 & 15 year olds will tackle 1,200 metres. The emphasis is on fun
and health with everyone welcome to come down and enjoy the spectacle. The runners will all gather at the finishing point outside the Adidas store in CC Gala for the prize giving.

ARK webber is to leave Red Bull and Formula 1 at the end of the season, switching to porsche’s new world Endurance Championship project. The Australian made his F1 debut with Minardi in 2002 and went on to drive for Jaguar, williams and Red Bull, taking nine victories to date. There has been much speculation about his future at Red Bull after a public row with team-mate Sebastian Vettel over the “multi-21” saga at the Malaysian Grand Prix earlier this season. The World Champion defied team orders to pass Webber for the lead before going on to claim victory. ”It’s an honour for me to join Porsche at its return to the top category in Le Mans and in the sports car World Endurance Championship and be part of the team. Porsche has written racing history as a manufacturer and stands for outstanding technology and performance at the highest level,” Webber said. “I’m very much looking forward to this new challenge after my time in Formula 1. Porsche will undoubtedly set itself very high goals. I can hardly wait to pilot one of the fastest sports cars in the world.” Continued of page 53
