For those of us who have waited and waited and griped and knocked at doors for years to push for the completion of the project, it is hard to believe that it is nearly a reality – but it is.

The beach in Callao Salvaje, Playa Ajabo, is looking more than good, with the parasols now in place, the restaurant open and even a lifeguard in place. However

there is still work to do and the word from the council is that is on-going. There is a stretch of ground behind the new beach bar that is currently being flattened and tarmacked though it is still not confirmed whether this will be a pathway or a through road for cars to and from the beach. A problem with water pressure levels has meant that some of the flower beds cannot be properly maintained, so they may be redesigned to a more adaptable format.

Bomberos, Policía Local, and Guardia Civil were all involved in the search, and subsequent rescue of an elderly German hiker who had been missing in Niágara barranco in Guía de Isora for two days.

He was found alive and well, but suffering from symptoms of dehydration, and was taken by helicopter to the Adeje helipad before being transferred to a hospital for an evaluation of his condition. Emergency services reported that they had been in telephone contact with the diabetic 73-year-old, but lost contact when his mobile phone battery died. He was, however able to describe where he was, enabling the emergency services to focus their search.

So, work in progress, but what a difference to this time two years ago. And what’s really great to see, as a resident and parent, is that this is a family beach; the parents and kids of Callao Salvaje and visiting families own the beach and love the beach, and care for the beach, and so it should be. And in truth it really has contributed to a new sense of pride for those of us who live here, in Callao Salvaje, a place that every day is becoming more of a Des Res!

Tenerife Government Bans Fires And Work In Mountains Due To Heat Wave

Dear Marc Craig 12 years ago I together with a friend were repairing my roof in Las Moraditas, in broad daylight, when a domed object with star shaped fins, zigzagged over us, I rang 2 neighbours to look, one wasn’t home, the other laughed and wouldn’t go out. By the time I was back on the roof it was a speck. My friend and I drew separately a sketch of what we had seen … both identical. What was it? Yours Sue D Thank you Sue, That’s fascinating. I know it was a long time ago but can you remember the date, even the month and year? I would love to look into this further and see if there were other sightings around the same time period. General public should avoid forest and woodland areas

To prevent forest and wild fires, the Government of Tenerife (Cabildo de Tenerife) has enforced a ban on certain activities in the mountains all over the island, following the Spanish Met Office’s forecast (AEMET) for extremely high temperatures.

The ban prohibits from the lighting of any fires in the recreation and barbecue areas in the mountains, any burning of agricultural or forest waste and lighting bonfires. Also banned is work with machinery or tools and the use of anything that could cause sparks in agricultural and forestry areas, such as brush cutters and welding equip-

ment. Fireworks displays in the area of risk and in areas close to dry vegetation where wildfire could spread are banned. Also, the public is advised to avoid transit through forested areas until the ban is lifted. These measures will remain in force as long as the dry weather conditions persist greatly increasing the risk of wildfires. As part of the plan for the prevention of forest fires, the Cabildo of Tenerife has issued a plea to the general public to avoid going into the mountains during the heat wave whenever possible. The island’s Department for Forestry and Fire Management has already put its emergency services on standby so they are ready to act if a high risk situation occurs.

The Tribunal de Cuentas is to investigate the socalled “economic black hole” of some 300,000 Euros in Arona caused by the chaos in the contracts awarded for beach concessions (sunbeds, umbrellas, etc.). It appears, now, that the three adjudications, which have brought virtually no money into Arona’s coffers during 2012 and 2013, were null and void from 2011 and renewed over the last two years in verbal form only. The Tribunal de Cuentas is a national independent state supervisory body for the country’s economic administration, including the public sector. It appears that it will also look at Arona’s economic administration in general, in addition to investigating the particular problems surrounding the 300,000 Euros deficit. Since José Antonio Reverón denounced the matter to the public prosecutor, there are now two formal investigations on-going into Arona’s finances. easyJet, the UK’s largest airline, has added a further five routes to its flight schedule making 190,000 more seats available for its passengers. The new routes will take off from 17 October 2013 and are available to book now at easyJet.com. The airline will add a twice– weekly winter sun route to Tenerife from Newcastle International Airport from 6 November 2013 with prices available from as little £28.49 San Miguel de Abona has approved a bylaw modification that will make it an offence, with fines of between 750 and 1,500 Euros, to sell vehicles in public spaces or on roads in the municipality. Those wanting to sell cars privately must get a licence from San Miguel Ayuntamiento, and this must be displayed prominently in the vehicle being sold. The council says that many people put a se vende sign on cars parked along busy roads, or in service stations, car parks, etc. often where there are legitimate car dealerships nearby, and it is unfair for these businesses to be put at a disadvantage. The tenth edition of EUroForUM will take place on 11th, 12th and 13th July at the Iberostar Grand Hotel Mencey in Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz Development Society will repeat the event again in March 2014, to coincide with a major TV series festival. EUROFORUM is the only audiovisual co-production market in the Canary Islands, dedicated to the promotion of feature film projects, TV movies and TV series. The City Council of Santa Cruz, through its Development Society, Festeam and the Cabildo de Tenerife have presented the programme of activities for this meeting, to be staged in the capital for the first time. Makers of films and TV series can join forces and create synergies within the audiovisual sector. A 4 year-old child was rescued from drowning on Monday afternoon from Radazul Beach, El Rosario. The child was unconscious and medical services performed resuscitation manoeuvres before taking the child Hospital Universitario de Canarias (HUC). The child is reported to be in a critical condition. Spain, together with Germany, France, Italy, and the UK, has signed a G5 pilot, a multilateral and automatic information exchange agreement, to crack down on tax evasion. The scheme will involve the exchange of a wide range of financial information between the countries, and is based on the model agreements negotiated by the five countries with the United States government to comply with the US Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FACTA). Information exchanged includes names, addresses and account numbers of foreigners, and account balances, as well as other more detailed information for particular types of accounts. From 2014, it is likely that further implementations will also see information being exchanged about life insurance products, pensions, and ownership of and income from property.

Arona Creates 150 jobs

THE Arona Government has agreed to adhere to an agreement between the Government of the Canary Islands and the Federation of Canarian municipalities (FECAM) to develop an extraordinary programme of Social employment for 2013. By virtue of this agreement, the Arona Town Council will allocate a total of 750,000 euros (500,000 provided by the City Council and 250,000 from the Government of the Canary Islands) to hire 150 people for a five month period. As set out in the document of the agreement, the Social Employment Plan aims to develop “extraordinary performances by employment and social utility, which benefit the community and, at the same time, involving a reduction of unemployment”. The Convention involves, as well, the recruitment of unemployed people for the execution of tasks in

the public interest, such as maintenance, adaptation and re-evaluation of urban, rural and coastal public areas, support to municipal services, the improvement and maintenance of landscaped areas and actions to improve on the access roads to the municipalities. Councillor of economic promotion of the city of Arona, Marcos Afonso, regretted the stance of the opposition, since “the other political groups have not supported this initiative, which will generate resources for 150 families in this town”. The mayor said that “is not obliged to interpret the opposition put forward as political interests above the real needs of the citizens”. Afonso also noted that “this agreement framework will benefit the long term unemployed, people at risk of social exclusion, as well as families in which none of its members receive any sort of economic benefit, now is the time to contribute to improving the situation of the residents of Arona”.

ver the past few months, my wife and I have taken many trips to the other side of the Island, to the forests and coastal towns of the north to name but a few, they’ve been great days out and given me something to talk about here, but this week I thought it might be nice to cover somewhere a bit nearer to my doorstep, a place that’s got quite a different ambience to the majority of the resorts in the south, yet it’s only a 15 minute drive or a few bus stops away.

El Médano, Spanish for “the sand dune” is a wonderful little town in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, just past the south airport on the TF1. Just drive past the airport turnoff and take exit 22 for El Médano/San Isidro and follow the signs, or if you are without transport, or just might like to try a few bars for the excellent mojitos (amongst many other delights), taking the local Titsa bus couldn’t be easier. The 483 departs from Las Americas Bus Station via Los Cristianos, roughly every 2 hours from 7.30am to 8.50pm and takes you all the way in about 30 minutes. One of the first things I should mention is, it is WINDY in El Médanonot to say you can’t escape it, there are plenty of boutiques, bars and restaurants and sheltered areas if it starts to get a bit much, the area is famous for windsurfing in particular, but also kite and regular surfing, with 3 great locations, the Bay, the Harbour Wall and Cabezo beach, and there’s rarely a day when there isn’t plenty of avid water sports enthusiasts out on the waves putting on a spectacular show that you can enjoy free of charge, from the comfort of the many beachside bars and cafes etc, or just sitting on the beach or on the many benches provided along the seafront. Having worked in pretty much every holiday resort in the UK during my band days, the thing that struck me most about the town on my first

Surfer’s Paradise... And Much More

selling truly original stuff from clothing, bags, jewellery and things for the house at very competitive prices -it’s easy to find something that’s a bit different for just a few euros!! As I already mentioned there are restaurants and bars in abundance, along the seafront and in and around the backstreets and alleyways, we stopped and had a cheap but excellent mojito in a bar literally built into the sea wall-very relaxing! If you prefer walking in natural surroundings rather than shoplined streets there’s plenty of great Coastal walks in the area. Playa Grande and Playa Tejita are two of the largest natural beaches on the island surrounded by the large dunes which give the town its name. Between the two beaches stands La Montaña Roja , “the Red Mountain” which is a volcanic cone surrounded by a protected natural reserve. Take the Los Abrigos turn-off before you reach the town centre and you’ll find several parking areas from where multiple paths and trails take you into the reserve, up Montaña Roja and to the dunes and beaches. There are some lovely walks and it’s popular with hikers and dog walkers too. A heads up- the beach to the right is a nudist beach, quite a shock when you don’t know- we stumbled across a quite elderly lady who, due to the naturally iridescent particles in the powdery sand, was quite impressively vajazzled.....at least you’ve been forewarned!! Anyway I hope you take some time to visit this lovely town...gotta go -surfs up!!

visit is how much it reminded me of the South West Coastal resorts of Cornwall and Devon, particularly Torquay with its surfing community. If you, like me are drawn to the surfing way of life, it runs through El Médano like a vein, most of the surf shops, beachwear and custom beach jewellery boutiques have that relaxed, friendly laid-back vibe which, even if you’re just an observer for the day, makes you feel part of something different! The shopping is quite unlike anywhere else I’ve found in Tenerife, although there is branded beachwear in abundance, which can be very pricey, there are loads of tiny places

Tenerife’s Cambuyón At the edinburgh Fringe Festival

THE Edinburgh Festival Fringe is welcoming Tenerife’s Cambuyón, an interdisciplinary show that tells the story of the evolution of rhythm through different cultures. Tap dancers, hip hop dancers, body percussionists, together with singers and drummers, will wow audiences on a journey packed with knowledge, experiences and lots of rhythm. The show can be seen for the very first time outside Spain at the Assembly roxy (Edinburgh) from 31st July to 26th August 2013.

In both theatrical and comic ways, Cambuyón – a way of living in the nineteenth century – explains the recent history of western rhythm fusion through a combination of tap dancing (inspired in the English clogging), body percussion and human voices as well as the help of pans, wine bottles and wooden boxes. This journey through time and space is explained by seven

Get Insurance That Covers All Your Holiday Activities Britons coming on holiday to Spain this summer are strongly encouraged to read the small print on their travel insurance policy to make sure it covers adventure activities like quad biking or water sports.

A new survey reveals that fewer than half of young Brits check that their insurance covers risky pursuits*, despite four out of five admitting that they take part in more adventurous behaviour when on holiday. Consulates across Spain have first-hand experience of the distress caused to young people who suffer accidents, only to find out that they can’t get home or they face a hefty medical bill because their insurance policy fails to cover dangerous sports. Holidays in warm weather make Britons more confident, more inclined to try new things and less inhibited, the survey of young travellers found. Dave Thomas, Consular Director for Spain, said: “Most Brits will think that hiring a quad bike for the afternoon or going out on a jet ski for an hour is not a risky pursuit – but their insurance company probably does. That’s why it’s so important that holidaymakers check their insurance policy before they buy

and make sure they have full cover for everything they’re planning to do. “We will do what we can to support anyone who needs help. But we cannot pay medical bills or fly people home. We deal with hundreds of cases every year where an already distressing accident or injury is made much worse by having to worry about large, uninsured costs as well.” The average claim for a personal accident is £7,500**, according to a Post Office survey, so it’s all the more important to get the right cover for a trip, including adventure activities. As well as travel insurance, the Foreign Office and The Travel Association ABTA also want holidaymakers to ensure they can get basic medical care. A European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), available free from the NHS at www.ehic.org.uk, covers all medically necessary care in a state hospital during a temporary stay in Spain. But it does not provide for private care or services such as medical repatriation by air ambulance which can be very expensive. That’s why travel insurance matters. The first Live Arico PAWS talent contest is being held at Ye Olde Ocean Fun Pub in Fanabe. The auditions will be held on Saturday 27 July with the Final being held on Saturday 3 August.

All participants must arrive with a completed application form including photograph and their entry fee of 5 Euros. It is advised that you arrive early as we are limited to the numbers who can take part. Those wishing to take part can arrive anytime from 12.30 to register. First act will be seen at 1pm.

The judges for the competition are Sue Havenhand representing Live Arico PAWS, Julie Miller representing Ye Olde Ocean who have kindly allowed us to use their venue for the event. Lorna Eade Editor of Tenerife Weekly, Michael J Grant, well known singer and Shane Haigh-Sousa well known award winning variety act. The event will be hosted by Gordon Slayney from Coast FM radio. Each act will have 5 minutes maximum to showcase their act in the auditions, the judges may, in the usual way stop an act at any time during their showcase if they do not wish to hear/see anymore! Feedback will be given by the judges to each act and those who are fortunate to be taken through to the finals week will be notified at 5.45pm.

www.tenerife-weekly.com By Steve Andrews There are is some really spectacular Tenerife countryside below Erjos and above Los Silos in the area of the Monte del Agua (“Mountain of Water”). There are two ravines or “barrancos as they are known in Spanish that have green forested slopes and run down between the mountains towards the coast. Cuevas Negras (“Black Caves”) and the Barranco de los Cochinos are connected though by a long tunnel carrying an aqueduct of flowing water.

This means that walkers can get from one ravine to another by taking a shortcut underground and a circular route can be plotted. One of the entrances to the tunnel is located off a side-path that leads away from the main footpath down the Cuevas Negras ravine. Only experienced hikers are recommended to take this route though because the tunnel itself is about 1km in length and has flowing water is all in the dark and has a low ceiling.

If you begin your walk from the main square in the village of Erjos and follow the signpost for Cuevas Negras you will soon find the rocky pathway that leads through the forest-covered ravine down towards Los Silos. There are a number of abandoned houses though one still has someone living in it in splendid isolation surrounded by greenery and trees. The side path leading to the tunnel entrance is on the right some way past the houses. It is best to go with someone who knows where it is because it is easily missed. creted water channel that leads away from the entrance to the tunnel itself. You will need a good torch and be prepared to go either barefoot or wearing sandals. The water is only ankle-depth in most places though gets deeper towards the exit into Barranco de los Cochinos. Once you are in the tunnel you will have to bend down as you are walking if you are tall because the ceiling is quite low and it is easy to bang your head on it. So be careful! In winter the water can be very cold but in summer it is pleasantly cooling after you have been walking in the warmer air outside. Eventually you will reach the exit and find yourself in the Barranco de los Cochinos. The path you need to take involves a bit of scrambling upwards but after that you are on a forest pathway. This leads eventually to another trail with sign posts for Los Silos, Monte del Agua and Erjos. The forested pathway though the wooded slopes of Barranco de los Cochinos goes right past the entrance to a closed-off mine shaft that sadly was open back in 2007 when a party of hikers entered it thinking it was the other tunnel that leads to Cuevas Negras. This

End of the tunnel that comes out in Barranco de los Cochinos was a very serious mistake which led to the deaths of six young people who were overcome by poisonous gases in this underground mining tunnel which is known as the Piedra de los Cochinos gallery. Another 23 people were injured and this terrible tragedy caused many questions to be asked about the safety of the many tunnels like this on the island. The entrance was sealed off with metal grating and a warning sign but this was too

late for those that lost their lives. This tragic incident is a reminder to all hikers and walkers that go exploring the island that it is not a good idea at all to enter tunnels unless you know they are safe and are with an experienced guide. The other water tunnel between the two ravines is safe because it has entrances both ends and allows the flow of fresh air as well as water through it. The Piedra de los Cochinos only had the one way in.

Monte del Agua (Mountain of Water)

Your walk will take you through the lush evergreen laurel forests of Monta del Agua and back on an easy forest trail to your starting point in the village of Erjos. This circular route is about 14km and takes around 5 hours allowing for breaks. It is a very enjoyable and interesting walk though the water tunnel may prove challenging for some people.

THE Group of people with intellectual disabilities (Sinpromi) are presenting an exhibition of Spin Art entitled “Dialogues with Caesar, in a tribute to the work of artist and architect César Manrique.

The exhibition has been opened with the collaboration of the Museo de Historia y Antropologia de Tenerife and will be open until August 4 at the Museum on Tuesday to Saturday from 9.00am to 8.00pm, and on Sunday’s, Monday’s and public holidays, 10.00am to 5.00pm. The exhibition was opened recently by the insular Counsellor for Social Action, Cristina Valid, accompanied by the head of museums, Amaya Conde, and the CEO of Sinpromi, Carmen Rosa García. Valid highlighted the work done by all the students, who wanted to “show their personal tribute to Cesar Manrique, a universal, Lanzarote born artist who worked to interpret and combine his work with the natural landscape of the Islands”. The exhibition ‘Dialogues with César’ consists of three large-format murals and 24 prints. The murals recreated are known pictorial and sculptural works of the late artist and have been made in the technique of oil on canvas. The

BIG JACK NEEDS A HOME !

Jack is 9 months old and was found by Siobhan from the San Eugenio charity shop running around in the road. We will not lie – he is big, he is boisterous and he is a handful. But he is adorable, a big bouncy pup with love to give (although it would appear not to cats!!) So, what to do with Jack?

Well on the day in question we could not find a foster home, so we went through the official channels and called 112. It kind of worked – the police did not come, but they said if we could get Jack to the police station they would take over. He eventually was placed in the Adeje pound – except then we worried about him, who would want him, what would happen to him? So, we “adopted” him, as a charity, sent him to Poochies pet hotel, he has been sterilised, chipped, vaccinated and is now good to go. Things could have been very different for him, but we thought he was young and deserved a chance. Can you be that chance? He will love you for-

Adeje is the only Canarian region to have been awarded the title of “Science and Innovation Town”, a distinction issued by the national Economic Ministry this week.

Mainland News In Brief Spain’s Crown Prince Felipe, who is heading the Madrid 2020 delegation has said that he was “very happy with how everything is going,” but adding that “one mustn’t get overconfident.” He added: “There’s still a battle to be fought,” he said after receiving in a room at a Lausanne hotel the many members of the International Olympic Committee, beginning with President Jacques Rogge, who came to hear about the Spanish plan to host the Games. Expressing himself in similar terms was Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who emphasized that the team behind Madrid’s candidacy is “very encouraged” after the meeting in Switzerland. “For Spain, to win these Games would be very positive and, since we would do them very well, Spain’s image would come out greatly strengthened,” he said. Rajoy said that Tokyo and Istanbul also have made good presentations, “but I like ours best, and I hope that (the IOC members) also liked it more.” The head of three well-known sites with links to pirate content has been sentenced to serve 21 months’ imprisonment by the court of Valencia in Spain. The websites divxonline, estrenosonline and seriesonline have been among the first to be closed down and fined by the Spanish authorities. According to the newspaper El Pais, the head of the sites will have also to pay 12 Euros a day during 21 months in order to avoid a longer period in prison. The sentence has sparked a big debate in Spain, as the current copyright law is not clear when it comes to websites with only links to pirate copies, but without the audiovisual content itself. Apparently, the main reason for the unprecedented sentence was that the sites were publicly generating income: at present, owners of such services avoided prosecution by claiming that sharing without profit could not be illegal. Opera singer Placido Domingo is in the hospital after suffering a blockage in an artery of the lungs. Domingo’s representative says the 72-year-old is expected to make a full recovery but will have to miss several appearances scheduled for later this month. He was admitted to the hospital on Monday in Madrid. Doctors say the pulmonary embolism was caused by a blood clot. Doctors have asked the Spanish tenor and conductor to rest for three to four weeks, but that healing time varies. His return to the stage will depend on how quickly he regains his strength. It’s not the first time Domingo has faced a serious medical condition. Domingo returned to the stage just 45 days after undergoing colon cancer surgery in 2010 and has maintained a vigorous schedule and displayed an uncommon vitality at an age when most stars have stepped away from the spotlight. Domingo has cancelled his five performances in Daniel Catan’s “Il Postino,” which were to begin July 17 at the Teatro Real in Madrid, as well as an appearance on July 21 at Plaza Mayor. He was caught hiding naked in a panic room at his luxury villa. He was captured when more than 40 armed officers smashed their way into the house in Malaga. Officers were unable to get into his panic room, but he surrendered when he realised there was no escape.

He had rushed to the sealed room which was hidden behind a wardrobe in his bedroom, after dogs he kept in his garden began barking, alerting him to the dawn raid. Lilley, who went on the run in 2000 when he skipped bail during his trial, was able to watch the raid unfolding with a computer linked to CCTV cameras. Footage of the operation shows officers climbing over a gate before running to Lilley’s front door and breaking it down with a battering a ram. He is seen being handcuffed with a strip of cloth wrapped around his waist. A police helicopter hovered above the villa in the Alhurin de la Torre area during the raid, which was a joint operation by the Spanish National Police and Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca). Extradition proceedings have begun to return Lilley to the UK. After going on the run, Lilley, 41, from Warrington, Cheshire, was given a 23year prison sentence in his absence for masterminding a large-scale drug operation and firearm offences. Dave Allen, head of the fugitives unit at Soca, said: “Lilley was a dangerous man with access to firearms. He had evaded capture for a long time by moving around Spain and using false identities. My message for other fugitives on the run is a simple one - we will hunt you down and you will face justice for your crimes.” Roger Critchell, director of operations at Crimestoppers, said: “We are extremely relieved that this dangerous drug dealer has been arrested and will be made to face justice.” Lilley was the 51st suspect located out of 65 wanted by Operation Captura officers.

Nuclear Power Plant Closes

The 42-year-old Santa Maria de Garoña nuclear power plant in the north-central province of Burgos, one of the eight nuclear reactors operating in Spain, has been shut down. The power plant was closed

under an order issued by the Industry and Energy Ministry, and continues to be the target of criticism from the opposition and non-governmental organizations, such as Greenpeace.

The nuclear energy facility was closed down for economic and not safety reasons and the government have not ruled out reactivating the power plant “if it is possible,” Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said. She added that the government has no plans to change the regulations covering the nuclear power industry. The shutdown was undertaken “even though there are no nuclear safety or radiological protection reasons that require it,” and because the company that owns the facility cited economic reasons “for not requesting the renewal of the operating license,” the Industry and Energy Ministry order said. Nuclenor, which is owned by Endesa and Iberdrola, operates the power plant and is responsible for storing the uranium fuel used at the plant. The Spanish Socialist Workers Party, or PSOE, the country’s largest opposition party, criticized the conservative Popular Party, or PP, government for holding out the possibility of reopening the plant. Greenpeace, for its part, said the possibility of modifying regulations to reopen the Santa Maria de Garoña plant “is criminal.”

Iceland’s Interior Ministry said it had received a letter concerning Mr. Snowden’s “situation” but that it was “not possible to confirm whether the letter in question is in fact from Mr. Snowden.” The former National Security Agency contractor is wanted in the U.S. on charges of espionage and theft of government property for passing details of top-secret government mass-surveillance programs to the media. Russian officials have said he is in the transit zone of Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport, although he hasn’t been seen in public since leaving Hong Kong on a Moscow-bound flight in June. He didn’t disclose who supplied the information and declined to say whether he had been in touch with U.S. officials about Mr. Snowden. It turned out that the fugitive American wasn’t aboard the Bolivian aircraft. Suspicion had been aroused when Mr. Morales, in Moscow for a summit of gas-exporting countries, told Russian television that his government would consider granting asylum to Mr. Snowden if a request

were made. En route home, the Bolivian leader spent nearly 14 hours in the Vienna airport after France, Italy and Portugal denied his jet authorization to fly over their territory. The jet was searched by Austrian police before Mr. Morales was given clearance to continue his flight home, with a refueling stop in the Canary Islands. Mr. Morales has warned that he might close the U.S. Embassy in Bolivia over the forced landing, which he called a violation of international law. The leaders of Venezuela, Ecuador, Argentina and Uruguay joined him this week in demanding answers from France, Portugal, Italy and Spain over the blocked flight. Mr. García-Margallo said Spain didn’t need to apologize because it never shut its airspace. He said a flyover permit Spain had granted expired when Mr. Morales was grounded in Austria, but was later reissued after the Bolivian government assured Spain in writing that Mr. Snowden wasn’t aboard the plane.

9 Killed In Bus Crash

Nine people were killed and five more seriously injured after a bus careered off the road near the town of Avila, central Spain. Local news reports said the bus, which was carrying around 30 passengers, rolled over after travelling at excessive speed on a bend along the N-403 highway south of Avila. Paramedic crews who arrived on the scene rescued several passengers who had become trapped in the wreckage.

“We confirm nine dead, five seriously injured and more than 10 slightly injured in the bus crash,” said an emergency services spokesman for the region of Castile and Leon. The commuter bus, from a local company called Cevesa, was using the SerranillosÁvila route, from South to the North of the province of Avila. Several drivers passing by alerted the authorities

around 8.30 am about the accident. Pictures of the scene showed the bus lying by the side of the road with the front windscreen smashed and most of the windows missing. Four bodies lay on the N-403 road, completely covered in white sheets or silver foil. Emergency services workers in black helmets and tunics carried one person

away in a stretcher and several other people, apparently shocked passengers, sat on the kerb nearby. The families of the victims were taken to Avila, to the Carlos Sastre Sports Center, where a team of social workers and psychologists provided medical attention and support. Passengers are believed to be from the villages located along the bus route.

SEVErAL thousand thrill-seekers tested their bravery by running alongside six fighting bulls through the streets of Pamplona on the first day of the running of the bulls. Despite a large crowd of participants and possibly because the run coincided with a weekend, only four people were treated for injuries and no one was gored, officials said.

The regional government of Navarra, which is responsible for organising the annual San Fermin festival, said in a statement that none of the four are seriously injured. A 24-year-old Australian, identified only by the initials JC, was being treated for bruising, as was a 44-year-old British national. An American citizen identified only as CS was also receiving treatment for a minor injury. A 36-year-old native of Pamplona with a minor injury was the only one still in hospital, the government said. There was a moment of tension as the last bull of the pack became disoriented and turned around to look back at runners, but it eventually entered the bullring without charging at anyone. GoVErNMENT subsidies are nearly exhausted and box office numbers down due to a recent tax increase, the government of Spain’s Catalan region is looking at alternatives for financing Catalan cinema. one proposal under consideration is for a new TV tax, the revenues from which would go to finance films where more than half of the production is based in Catalonia. Catalan’s regional film academy submitted the proposal and the region’s cultural department is currently considering it.

A spokesperson for Catalonia’s culture department said it was too early to talk about details because the

tax is only one of many ideas being discussed, but film academy president Isona Passola estimated that such a tax could cost around 6 10 Euros per household per year. Some 34 features and 15 documentaries are due to shoot in the Catalonian region this year. The vast majority are low budget. Only six features have budgets of more than 1 million Euros. “We are analysing all of the possible mechanisms to finance culture,” the head of the culture department, Ferran Mascarell said. Fewer government subsidies, he added: “Is a reality on an international level, not only on a Catalan or Spanish one, and it forces us to rethink ways to finance the cultural sector.” In a poll on newspaper La Vanguardia’s website, around 90% of the 5,000 people who participated rejected the idea of a television tax.

aria Saward launched her divorce case through the English legal system for a share of her husband Paul’s property portfolio, after just four years of marriage. But would-be ex-husband, Mr Saward, a keen yachtsman, managed to convince a judge that his dislike of the British weather meant he no longer thought of himself as a UK resident. The couple met in Majorca, married in Gibraltar, in 2009, and lived near Alicante, on Spain’s Costa Blanca, until Mrs Saward left her husband in June 2011, following a row. Her husband vowed “not to pay her a penny”. Mrs Saward, 63, turned to the English courts for a divorce, because of their international reputation for securing favourable settlements for the ex-wives of wealthy men. She secured a decree nisi in November 2011 and proceeded to fight for a slice of her 66-year-old husband’s property fortune, on the basis that, whilst he was currently living in Spain, his spiritual home was in Hampshire, where he was from. Mrs Saward cited evidence that her husband had been disparaging about the country in which he had settled. She also stressed that bulk of his property portfolio was in Southampton and the surrounding area, he has six properties, and most of his family lived in the area, and his yacht was moored there most of the time.

Wife Loses Divorce Case Due To The Weather

It emerged during the hearing that when his wife began divorce proceedings, Mr Saward had just bought a yacht in Scotland which he had sailed to Southampton and, in June 2011, was living and sleeping on the boat in Southampton harbour. However, Judge Lesley Newton, sitting in the High Court Family Di-

vision last year, overturned the decree nisi after ruling that Mr Saward’s permanent residence was in Spain and that the English courts had no jurisdiction over the couple’s divorce. The judge observed: “Although the husband may well have expressed a dislike of Spain in forceful terms on many occasions, and whilst he may have contemplated a

return to the UK, he had made no concrete plans to do so.” Finding that Mr Saward’s “permanent and habitual fixed centre of interests” was Spain, the judge said that the key piece of evidence was a letter he wrote whilst staying on his yacht in Southampton, in which he stated: “I have no plans of ever moving back here, I could not put up

with the weather ... only two days left and I will be home.” “In June 2011 he clearly saw himself as visiting England and his home being in Spain,” Judge Newton concluded. Mrs Saward asked the Appeal Court to reverse that ruling, but in a ruling last week, Lady Justice Black upheld the High Court’s findings. She said Judge Newton had “carefully compared all the factors before and against residence in this country” before ruling that Mr Saward’s permanent home and main sphere of interest was in Spain. The appeal judge concluded: “The most that might be said is that the judge viewed the facts in some way from the wrong end of the telescope, looking at residency rather than interests. However there is no prospect of convincing this court that the judge was wrong.” Mrs Saward, outside court, said: “I’m very upset. This marriage ruined my life completely. As far as I know the court’s decision means I’m now still married. I don’t know whether my husband has undertaken divorce proceedings in Spain or not.” She added: “In the region where we live in Spain, when a couple split up any property held in joint names is split equally whether they are married or not. China’s Yellow River plagued by large amount of silts has an annual operation to move around 30 million tonnes of silt downstream. Water is discharged at 2,600 cubic metres per second from the Xiaolangdi Reservoir in Luoyang, Henan province, to clear up the sediment in Asia’s second longest river. The sand-carrying water gushes out of

three specialised holes in a 154 metre-high, 1,317 metre-wide dam - lowering the river bed in the lower reach of the river. The river bed rises each year as some 1.6 million tonnes of silt deposits build up, causing fears that this may cause the river to break out its banks during floods. The speeding currents carry tonnes of sand into the sea each year. The highest volume of silt is produced during the rainy season from July to October.

ELIGIBLE royal Mail staff will be entitled to free shares under the Government’s plans for the privatisation of the service, despite strong opposition to the selloff among the workforce.

Business Secretary Vince Cable confirmed in a statement to MPs the intention to float a majority stake in Royal Mail initially, with the rest following depending on market conditions. As he announced that staff would hold 10% of the business under the proposals, members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) drove around the city in an open-top bus to denounce the sell-off, despite the prospect of a windfall worth more than £2,000 each for the 150,000-strong workforce. Some of the protesters, most of them employees of the postal service, held placards reading: “Save our Royal

Mail” or “You own it, don’t buy it.” They argued that they cared more about the future of the service, their pensions, jobs and working conditions than a ‘sweetener’. The union’s deputy general secretary, Dave Ward, dismissed reassurances about future employment rules to warn of the prospect of strikes unless legally-binding agreements were put in place to guarantee his members’ conditions. Mr Cable told the Commons: “These shares will be free to eligible employees, recognising that many of them would otherwise find them unaffordable.” He said the flotation, which was expected to value the business at £3bn, would begin over the next year and the shares would be listed on the London Stock Exchange and be available to the general public as well as institutional investors. “This is logical, it is a commercial decision designed to

put Royal Mail’s future on to a long-term sustainable basis,” he said. “It is consistent with developments elsewhere in Europe where privatised operators in Austria, Germany and Belgium produce profit margins far higher than the Royal Mail but have continued to provide high-quality and expanding services. Now the time has come for Government to step back from Royal Mail, allow its management to focus wholeheartedly on growing the business and planning for the future.” Labour said it would oppose the flotation. Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna responded: “Having nationalised the organisation’s debts by taking on its pension liabilities, they now want to privatise the profit at the very time it is making money. AUSTrALIAN police investigating a suspected break-in at a charity shop discovered the culprit was actually a 19ft python.

Police in the town of Ingham, in North Queensland, had been mystified by the chaotic crime scene which included a hole in the ceiling and a smelly pool of vomit-like liquid. Officers initially thought a thief had fallen through the ceiling and then thrown up - until employees spotted the giant snake the next day. Police Sergeant Don Auld said: “We thought

a person had fallen through the ceiling because the roof panel was cut in half. When they’ve hit the floor, they’ve vomited and then staggered and fallen over. That’s what we thought anyway.” He now suspects the python, which weighs 17kg (37lbs), entered the St Vincent de Paul charity store, called Vinnies, through the roof, which was damaged in a cyclone two years ago. The animal then fell through the ceiling, knocking over dishes, clothes and other items, before relieving itself on the floor. It somehow managed to hide from officials until staff spotted it lying alongside a wall the next day.

Three Kidnap Victims Say Thank You For Support

Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight, the women who were abducted and held captive in a house in Cleveland, Ohio, for a decade have thanked the public for their support in a YouTube video. The three women broke their silence in the video, saying the encouragement of family, friends and the public had allowed them to restart their lives.

Former bus driver Ariel Castro is alleged to have kidnapped the women off the streets between 2002 and 2004. He has pleaded not guilty to 329 charges, including 139 counts of rape, and aggravated murder over the death of an unborn child. The women were rescued in May when Ms Berry broke through a door at the home and yelled to neighbours for help: “I’m getting stronger each day and having my privacy has helped immensely,” she said in the video. “I want everyone to know how happy I am to be home with my family and my friends. It’s been unbelievable. I want to thank

everyone who has helped me and my family through this entire ordeal.” Ms Berry, now 27, was reportedly forced to give birth to her daughter Jocelyn in an inflatable children’s paddling pool, while fellow captive Michelle Knight gave the baby mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. In the video, Ms Knight said she had “been through hell and back”, but she was doing well and did not want to be “consumed by hatred”. Ms Berry, who was snatched at the age of 20 and is the eldest of the three women, spoke of how her faith in God had helped her deal with the situation: “I have no problems expressing how I feel inside,” she said. “Be positive. Learn that it is important to give than to receive. Thank you for all your prayers. I’m looking forward to my brand new life.” The three victims’ rehabilitation has been helped by more than $1m of public donations to the Cleveland Courage Fund. Drinking + Smoking = Brain Decline

A new study by researchers at University College London suggests that smokers who also drink heavily cause their brains to deteriorate faster than people who avoid cigarettes and drink in moderation.

The study found smoking and drinking more than the recommended weekly amount speeds up cognitive decline by as much as 36%. The results of the 10-year study, which involved more than 6,400 civil servants, are published in the British Journal of Psychiatry. Each person was asked about their cigarette and alcohol consumption and had their cognitive function, their verbal and mathematical reasoning, short-term verbal memory and verbal fluency, measured every four months. On average, the brains of smokers who were also heavy drinkers aged by the equivalent of 12 years - two years

calling the request “inappropriate”. An upcoming meeting will discuss the possibility of seeking the death penalty for the alleged crimes. Castro’s lawyers have hinted that he

Mr Webster said Travis was undergoing surgery on Wednesday night to relieve pressure on his brain. He has been in a critical condition: “His family and friends here with him at the hospital request your prayers and support,” Mr Webster said in a news release. Doctors said that Travis had been in good health until he was admitted to hospital, when he contracted a viral upper respiratory infection. The illness led to a weakened heart muscle that eventually worsened into heart failure. A six-time Grammy award winner, Travis is known for hits such as Forever and Ever, Amen and Three Wooden Crosses. In January he was sentenced to two years of probation, fined $2,000 and given a 180-day suspended jail sentence after pleading guilty to driving while intoxicated following his arrest last year when he was found naked after crashing his Pontiac Trans Am.

“Overwhelming” evidence showed the company acted knowingly and unlawfully in breaking anti-trust laws, said US judge Denise Cote. Publishers at the time were unhappy with Amazon’s practice of charging $9.99 (£6.68) for bestsellers but were unable to change it until Apple helped organise the group, ruled judge Cote. Customers ended up paying as much as $5 extra for a book, said US government lawyers. Statements from Apple co-founder Steve Jobs were cited in court as proof and included a remark to his biographer boasting that the publishers “went to Amazon and said, ‘You’re going to sign an agency contract or we’re not going to give you the books.’” Apple confirmed it would appeal against the decision and has always denied the charges, insisting its entry into the e-book market was actually good for competition: “Apple did not conspire to fix e-book pricing and we will continue to fight

Boston Bomber Pleads Not Guilty

Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev pleaded not guilty to 30 charges including the use of a weapon of mass destruction. His arm in a cast, Tsarnaev made his first courtroom appearance since his capture in April. The attack killed three people and wounded more than 260 others.

Dressed in a bright orange overall he walked calmly into court 10 at the Federal Court in Boston. He fidgeted in his seat and was then told to stand as the different charges were read to him. The 19-year-old smiled crookedly, he appeared to have a jaw injury, at his sisters. Tsarnaev leaned over a microphone and said, “Not guilty” in a Russian accent, to every charge, before being led out of the courtroom. He made a kissing motion toward his family as he left. The proceedings lasted just sev-

Authorities say Tsarnaev orchestrated the attack along with his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed following a shootout with police three days after the bombing. was captured. He wrote the US government was “killing our innocent civilians”. “I don’t like killing innocent people,” he said, but also wrote: “I can’t stand to see such evil go unpunished. ... We Muslims are one body, you hurt one you hurt us all.” Three people - Martin Richard, aged eight; Krystle Marie Campbell, 29; and Lingzi Lu, 23 - were killed by the bombs, which were improvised from pressure cookers. Authorities say the Tsarnaevs also killed Massachusetts Institute of Technology officer Sean Collier days later while they were on the run. Numerous bombing victims had legs amputated after the two explosions, which detonated along the final stretch of the race a couple hours after the elite runners had finished. Following the appearance Tsarnaev was driven back to the secure hospital in Massachusetts where he is being held - his case will be heard in court again in September.

Zara, 32, is also an accomplished sportswoman and last year won an Olympic silver medal as part of the equestrian eventing team. Zara Tindall, currently 14th in line to the throne, met her husband at the 2003 rugby World Cup in Australia. The couple married in Edinburgh two years ago, in a ceremony attended by all the senior Royals. However, just months later, the rugby player was fined and booted out of the 2011 World Cup squad over a team night out. He apparently took part in a “dwarf tossing” competition with fellow players and was seen embracing an ex-girlfriend. Tindall’s fine was eventually reduced and his suspension set aside after an appeal found he did not intentionally mislead the team’s management. oNE of the largest collections of prehistoric rock carvings created by desert nomads that lived 6,000 years ago has been discovered.

Archaeologists believe the 8,000 images carved into 500 rocks in Mexico’s white desert of Coahuila, could provide valuable clues to the way pre-Hispanic hunter-gatherer tribes communicated with each other. So-called petroglyph images are believed to have deep cultural and religious meanings and represent primitive forms of symbolic language combined with hallucinations from psychedelic drug use. The style of the runes varies from place to place, suggesting that in addition to religious meanings, territorial boundaries and regional dialects existed between clans. The rocks were discovered by scientists at Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History who have developed the site so it can be visited by the public.

The mayor of San Francisco, Ed Lee, said, “We’re lucky we have this many survivors.” And Joanne Hayes-White, the chief of the San Francisco Fire Department, said that it was “nothing short of a miracle.”

There are professionals dedicated to maximizing passenger survival in the event of a plane crash: flight attendants. Airlines don’t advertise the intense safety and crash training their flight attendants receive, because they’re wary of reminding passengers that air travel is risky. As a result, most people underestimate the skills flight attendants bring on board, and the dedication they have to the safety of their passengers. Flight attendants have to learn hundreds of regulations, and know the safety features of all of the aircraft in their airline’s fleet. They know how to evacuate all passengers from a plane, on land or sea, within 90 seconds; fight fires 35,000 feet in the air; keep a heart attack or stroke victim alive; calm an anxious, aggressive, or mentally ill passenger; respond to hijackings and terrorist attacks; and ensure group survival in the jungle, sea, desert, or arctic. Bruce loved model trains as a kid but it wasn’t until he was married that he started to build models. His hobby got so out of control he added five extra basements to his home to house his collection until he finally raised the money to create Northlandz. He says he has sunk ‘several million’ dollars into the project,

which h a s b e e n open to the public since 1997: ‘I worked 18 or 19 hours a day, seven days a week, non-stop,’ Bruce said. It boasts more than eight miles of track and features more than 100 trains, as well as almost 400 bridges and took some 16 years to complete. Northlandz, in Flemington, New Jersey contains more than 3,000 miniature buildings in cities and villages, 50,000 trees and 40-foot bridges spanning huge canyons. It even has its own theme park, complete with a roller coaster. ‘There’s nothing like it,’ he said. ‘Visitors come out saying it’s one of the Wonders of the World.’ He said the attraction is recognized by Guinness World Records as the biggest of its kind on the planet. On its busiest day Northlandz was visited by 2,000 people. It has even attracted several celebrity visitors - including famed model railroad fan, rocker Rod Stewart, Pee Wee Herman and Neil Young, who went to the attraction in disguise. ‘We didn’t even know he was there until the next day,’ said Bruce. Stewart and other stars signed a special ‘celebrity wall’ inside the exhibit. The path through the exhibit - spread across 16 acres - is almost one mile long. Visitors are told at the beginning it will take at least two hours to make their way through the whole thing.

First ever Manned ruff ride solar plane Crosses us

THE first-ever manned plane that can fly purely on solar power has completed the final leg of a historic US crosscountry journey. Solar Impulse landed at New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport at 11.09pm on Saturday after leaving California in early May. The plane previously flew from Europe to Africa, but for its creators this was the first successful cross-continent flight.

The flight plan for the revolutionary plane, powered by around 11,000 solar cells, had called for it to pass the Statue of Liberty before landing early on Sunday morning in New York. A CoUPLE in South Florida made a surprising discovery after finding a puppy trapped under the bonnet of their car. rescuers had to remove one of the vehicle’s wheels before they were able to pry the stray dog from between the steering mechanism and an axle.

Mike Jachles, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman, said the puppy must have travelled “anything from four, five or 10 miles”. He added: “They realised the engine wasn’t purring. In fact, it was actually running a little ‘rough’.” The dog - hot and exhausted - survived the ordeal unscathed. It is unknown how the animal got into the engine.

As many as 16% of holidaymakers still travel without insurance or covered their personal belongings against theft. Vanessa Chance, an insurance expert at LV=, said: “The goods that are being taken have changed. Now there are more, smaller highvalue electronic goods being taken. That’s what’s making up the bulk of theft claims because they’re very easy to sell on. We know that thieves will target certain brands because there is a ready market there to buy them.” Many people don’t realise that travel insurance doesn’t always cover these types of personal belongings, Ms Chance added. She advises travellers to keep cash and other valuables on them, rather than packing them away in luggage. On average, Brits take £700 of gadgets on trips, including cameras, iPads, phones, and laptops. Clothes and shoes taken on holiday are often worth as much as £400, accessories

and jewellery come to £350 and even toiletries taken on trips can be worth around £100. One in six travellers also pack cash into checked-in luggage but valuables in hold baggage are never covered on travel insurance, the LV= report shows. Children also take items worth hundreds of pounds away with them. A child’s suitcase is now worth on average £550, according to the research. Half a million Britons have had items of luggage stolen while away. Gadgets, sunglasses and jewellery are among the things stolen the most from holidaymakers. The research suggests that the value of goods in suitcases and hand luggage has risen 67% over the past five years. Yet many holidaymakers don’t use everything they pack and 17% of travellers pay for excess baggage - charges which have totalled £412m over the past five years.

Prostate Cancer

When I saw that TV interviewer Michael Parkinson is battling prostate cancer, the story brought back the loss of my father last year from the disease. Now that I am 50-years-old I should really be thinking about having a checkup for any signs of the condition.

Michael Parkinson has revealed that he is undergoing radiotherapy treatment after he was diagnosed October 2012. Luckily for him, his prognosis is good and he is expected to make a full recovery. The statistics show that each year 1 in 4 men who show signs of the condition will die from it. They also show that anyone whose father or brother has had the condition has a higher chance of suffering from it. So, what can we do to protect ourselves and how should we go about it? Over 40,000 men in Britain are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year and, it kills around 10,000 men annually. This is a very high figure and means that it is something that all men should be aware of! For those who are unaware, it is only men that have a prostate gland. It is about the shape and size of a walnut and its function is to make some of the fluid that carries sperm Sometimes, the cells in the prostate gland start to grow out of control and this is when cancer can develop, most commonly (but not exclusively) in men over the age of 50. In British men, this will happen to about 12% of them during

Experts say that prostate cancer doesn’t have many common signs. If you have noticed a change that you have to get up during the night to urinate or you need to go more often during the day or you have noticed blood in your urine or semen you should go to see your doctor. These signs don’t mean that you have it but there is a possibility. Asian men are far less likely to contract prostate cancer than western men although African-Caribbean men are three times more likely to develop the cancer than white men of the same age. Nobody knows why although it is thought that diet plays a part in the disease. Nutrition experts recommend that men eat more fruit and vegetables and less

red meat. It is also believed that the more exercise we do, 30 minutes a day is recommended, the less likely we are to get the disease. Smoking and drinking haven’t been linked to Prostate cancer, but we all know that we shouldn’t really be smoking and that alcohol intake should be limited. The way prostate cancer is treated depends on the man’s age, the size of the cancer and its aggressiveness, which is graded by doctors using a method known as the Gleason score. If the cancer hasn’t spread from the gland, then treatment can either involve the complete removal of the prostate, in a procedure known as a radical prostatectomy, or radiotherapy, both of which aim to get rid of your cancer completely. It is said that you can “Eat to Beat Cancer” and there is plenty of information about this on the internet. There are various ways that men are tested for prostate cancer including blood samples and the one that stops many men from going to the doctor. This is a digital examination. Yes, it means that a doctor may have to put their finger in a delicate place, but if your life depends on it, don’t you think it would be a good idea. Remember that old saying, “Pride comes before a fall”. If my father had been for the tests, he would have been alive today. I wish Michael Parkinson all the best in his fight and I will be making my appointment for a check in the coming week.

Peggy Is Back

hy on e a r t h Barbara Windsor is going back into “Eastenders is beyond me”. She must be bored or maybe she has seen the drivel that the BBC is churning out on an almost daily basis.

It won’t take long before she yells “Get outa my pub” or “Ello Darlin’”. Thankfully, she is only returning for a very short spell. I would be far happier if they were announcing a new Carry On movie.

She was a treat in those, but as a straight actress, she leaves me wishing she would do that funny giggly laugh that

we all love her for. It’s comforting to know that a 75 year old woman can still get a job in modern Britain.

THE Vatican has said that Pope Francis has cleared John Paul II for sainthood, approving a second miracle attributed to the late pontiff’s intervention.

Popular John Paul died in 2005 aged 84 after serving for 27-years. He is expected to be canonised before the end of the year although no date has yet been set. The first miracle to be approved by the Vatican came just six months after his death, when French nun Sister Marie SimonPierre inexplicably recovered from Parkinson’s disease after praying for the late pontiff’s “intercession”. However, there have been suggestions that Sister Marie did not actually have Parkinson’s. The Vatican spokesman said the second miracle, which is needed to become a saint, concerned a Costa Rican woman but did not name her. But at a news conference in San Jose, 50-year-old Floribeth Mora identified herself and was unable to hold back tears as she described how she was cured of a brain aneurysm. Mrs Mora said she thought she was going to die after being sent home with pain-

On the day of John Paul II’s beatification, 1 May 2011, she said that a poster sent to her showing photos of him on both sides seemed to speak to her. Mrs Mora said: “I heard something telling me, ‘Get up. Don’t be afraid.’ And I got up from my bed and I said, ‘Yes, I feel good’.” Her doctor, Alejandro Vargas confirmed the disappearance of a fusiform aneurysm of the middle cerebral artery which affected a “very important area of the brain”. For a healing to be officially certified as a miracle, the occurrence must be permanent, instantaneous and have no scientific explanation. The Vatican put John Paul on a fast-track to sainthood just weeks after his death on April 2, 2005, dispensing with the traditional five-year waiting period. Calls for the beloved pontiff to become a saint erupted at his funeral, where many mourners shouted “Santo Subito!” (“Sainthood Now!”). But some Vatican observers have voiced concerns that the process has been too quick.

The last years of John Paul’s papacy have been marred by a clerical sex abuse scandal, and critics said he failed to address other problems such as dysfunctional governance at the Vatican. As one of the longest-serving popes, the Polish-born John Paul travelled widely, often greeted by massive crowds as he championed peace, denounced human rights abuses and deplored the decadence of the modern world. He dismissed the pomp that surrounded his predecessors to seek contact with ordinary people, and is credited by many with helping to topple Communism in Eastern Europe. In 1981, he survived an assassination attempt in St Peter’s Square. But he also alienated many Catholics with staunchly conservative views on social matters. Pope Francis also decided to make the late pontiff John XXIII a saint even though the Vatican has not confirmed a second miracle attributed to his intercession. The Vatican said Francis had the power to “dispense” with the normal saint-making procedures to canonise him on his own merit, without a miracle.

The Viper’s Bugloss Species of Tenerife Echium giganteum

If you visit Mt Teide in spring or early summer you can’t help but being amazed, not only by its picturesque scenery that looks like another world, but also by the strange flowering plants growing there. The Mount Teide Bugloss (Echium wildpretii), Red Bugloss or Taginaste Rojo, as it is called in Spanish, is sure to make a lasting impression with its tall flowering spikes carried high above the dry and rocky ground.

It is a very rare plant that only grows high on Mt Teide and also around the mountain village of Vilaflor, although a subspecies trichosiphon can also be found on some of the mountains of La Palma. It is often cultivated in gardens though and the seeds in packets are available for sale in tourist and garden-

ing shops around the island. It forms a rosette of leaves in the first year of its life and in the second it produces a sturdy inflorescence that can reach 2.m or more in height. Each flowering spike is covered in thousands of small red blooms and looks really spectacular. A group of them in flower adds to the weird otherworldly feel of the higher ranges of the highest mountain in Spain. Because of this there are countless paintings and photographs of Mt Teide featuring this unmistakable plant. But actually its form is typical of the Echium genus to which it belongs and which Tenerife can boast to having many representatives of. Arrebol (E. simplex) grows from a rosette of long leaves and produces a tall flowering spike but in its case the flowers are white. This species is also very rare in the wild and is only found on some cliffs and mountains in the Anaga Range. Like the closely related species, however, it is often seen in plant borders in parks and

gardens. For example, there are some in the Parque del Drago in Icod de los Vinos. The bushy E. giganteum grows to 2.5 m and also has white flowers. It is found in many coastal and lower mountainous regions in the north of Tenerife. It is often seen growing in shrub borders too where it has been planted for its ornamental value. The very similar E. leucophaeum is locally common in some parts of the northern coast. Its flowering spikes are shorter and more dome-shaped. E. aculeatum is like a miniature version of these last two species and again has white flowers. It is only found in certain locations in the lower zone, though where it does grow it is quite common. This species can be easily spotted around the Santiago del Teide area, for example. E. virescens is another large bushy species. It has pinkish or blue flowers carried in well-formed and showy spikes, and is often found in forested areas and on the slopes of mountains in the north and south of the island. It forms big clumps and

blooms in spring. Another blue-flowered species is the Taginaste Picante (E. auberianum). It is very rare and has short stems. It is only found in some parts of the sub-alpine zone of Mt Teide and other Tenerife highlands. By contrast E. plantagineum is so common in many places that it is treated as an invasive weed. It has pretty purplish-blue flowers and often forms large patches in fields and farmland. Unlike all of the species mentioned so far, E. triste is a spindly plant with small pinkish flowers that is not likely to impress. “Triste” means sad in Spanish and it is aptly named. It grows in dry rocky ground on mountain slopes and coastal areas in the south of Tenerife. E. strictum is a very variable species of Viper’s Bugloss. It grows to around 1 km in height and has pinkish or bluish flowers. It is locally common in some forested parts of the island such as around villages in the

Anaga Mountains. The other Canary Islands have their own endemic Echium species too and back in Britain there is the Viper’s Bugloss (E.vulgare). It has blue flowers and tends to grow on waste ground and in sand dunes. All of the Viper’s Bugloss species produce small hard seeds that are in groups of four and look like very tiny nuts. The plants all produce a lot of nectar too and attract bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. Most types are biennials or shortlived perennials but some are annuals. Some of them have been used as medicinal herbs. In traditional Canary Islands folk medicine the leaves of some types have been made into infusions and poultices to bring relief for cases of joint pain and to treat fevers, coughs and headaches. Because of their attractive appearance most types of Viper’s Bugloss make great garden plants too. They certainly stand out!

Viper’s Bugloss Uses

Many of the Viper’s Bugloss species in the Echium genus have uses in herbal medicine and otherwise.

Several types are regarded as herbs that have been traditional remedies for many conditions. The plants also have astringent and diuretic properties. The seeds of Echium species contain gamma-linoleic acid (GLA) which is a steroid compound that has been shown to be an antioxidant and to be an anti-inflammatory substance. GLA is being tested as a treatment for multiple sclerosis.

The shoots of Echium italicum are eaten as a vegetable in Crete where they are boiled and steamed. Ancient herbalists thought that the fruits of the Viper’s Bugloss resembled a snake’s head. Under the “Doctrine of Signatures,” which worked with the idea of using a similarity in a plant to a part of the body or medical condition as an indication that it was a remedy for this, they considered the herb as an antidote for the venom of a snake. This has not been shown to be the case but was once believed to be true.

Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.

He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. jammie Dodger Mad part 2…..

The jammie Dodger Cheesecake

As I promised you all last week, here’s the second part of my Jammie Dodger page. Seeing as it is so famous and even been mentioned several times in Doctor Who - Lead actor Matt Smith has described Jammie Dodgers as “The Eleventh Doctor’s favourite snack” and also more recently in the episode “Victory of the Daleks”, The Doctor attempts to pass one off as a remote self-destruct button for his TArDIS – brilliant!

But it left one question boggling my mind. Why do they have a heart in the middle? Is it to deprive us of a little bit more shortbread? Or simply a cost cutting exercise? Well here’s the best answer I could find. Apparently because Jammy Dodgers are actually Anglesey Cakes, the company needed to trademark their own brand of Anglesey Cakes by making them look different so they used a heart instead of a circle for the middle. Clever eh?

Here’s a great sweet alternative to that traditional raspberry cheesecake, it’s extremely easy to make and obviously made with the wonderful Jammie Dodgers! but the stickiness of them jam does the job Ingredients: perfectly!). 2 packets Jammie Dodgers (you can use Next in a mixing bowl, add the cream whatever flavour you like) cheese, lemon juice and condensed milk. THE Centre For Low Carbon Futures has revealed that liquid air could power cars in the future. In simple terms, it is created when excess energy from a renewable source such as a wind turbine is used to cool (say) 700-litres of air to -196C.

This reduces its bulk to 1-litre which is then stored in an insulated vessel. When energy is required, it is heated to boiling point which forces it to expand back to its original proportion (in gas form). This expansion could power a wind turbine that might then produce electricity for the national grid. It could also fuel cars, ships, trains, lorries, motorbikes, etc. Liquid air is potentially invaluable as excess energy from renewable sources is not generally stored. In fact, it is often disposed of which is wasteful and expensive. Whereas this might not concern most electricity users now, it could be a significant issue in the future if the country becomes more depend-

In 2043 there will be 1970’s-era Mercedes-Benz cars still on the road though. By then they might rattle, leak, and/or squeak. They may even look a little dated. But not today. I drove this 1976 450sl to a dentist appointment this morning. Two weeks before I drove it from coast to coast, here in Tenerife. It doesn’t rattle. It doesn’t leak. It doesn’t squeak. It is as solid today as the day it rolled out of Stuttgart thirty odd years ago. This thing is built like a tank. In fact, the engineers who designed it nicknamed it “der Panzerwagen” as one of their specifications was to meet or exceed stringent safety regulations that threatened to force the roadster body style into permanent extinc-

tion. Apparently, the Germans know a thing or two about building tanks. Stylistically the R107 Chassis with its blend of slab shapes and extra-long radii curves owes far more to the Panzerkampfwagen “Königstiger” than its graceful automotive predecessors, the W198 and W113 “Sport Leicht” series. Under the hood, unlike the six-cylinder Gullwing and Pagoda Benzes, the R107 is motivated by a V-8 engine. It sports an overhead cam and fuel injection like its father and grandfather, and maintains a paternal link with a Pagodashaped removable hard top. From the neck down though it is its own panzer-like design. It was a phenomenally popular car, with well over a quarter-million of them made in a very long run, from 1971 through 1989. Built in a time when Mercedes-Benz was

In 2025, a corporation called The Union has perfected the creation of artificial organs, which have replaced organ transplants. A potential customer can apply for an organ, which are sold on credit, at high interest. If a customer is unable to maintain payments, after three months, a repo-man is sent after the customer to ‘reclaim’ Union property. The process of the repossession is bloody & brutal, and often results in the death of the customer. Remy is one of the Union’s top repo-men, who partners with his childhood friend, Jake, to collect on

past due accounts. Remy is highly regarded within The Union as their top performer, though his occupation causes problems with his wife, who sees it as unsavoury. After she leaves Remy when Jake commits a repossession in front of their home, Remy decides to transfer to a sales job, much to Jake’s chagrin. As his final repossession job, Remy is sent to the residence of a music producer, whose work he happens to admire. After allowing the man enough time to complete a song, Remy prepares to repossess his heart. When he attempts to use a heart defibrillator to stop the unit, the defibrillator malfunctions, sending a large electrical shock through his body and knocking him into a coma.

A first for Long Lost Family, 51-year-old twins Gail and Juliet Newmarch are searching for their brothers who, remarkably, are also twins. Gail and Juliet grew up with a close twin bond, which is still as strong and precious as it always was. There are, however, two people missing from their lives: their brothers, also twins, who were given up for adoption when the girls were just five years old. Juliet says: “We don’t know where they are, what their lives have been like, whether they would even want to be in touch with us... they are a missing part of our family.” Juliet and Gail grew up in South London, with their

mother Pauline, their father Michael and two other sisters. They remember their father as a complex character. Gail says: “He was tall, handsome, charismatic, charming. I think, as a father, he was wonderful, but, as a partner, I think he was very unreliable. He didn’t have a history of being faithful.” When the twins were four years old their father left Pauline for another woman. Their mother was devastated and found it difficult to bring her four young children up alone. Michael remained a part of Gail and Juliet’s lives and would visit them regularly and it was on one of these visits, when Gail was 15, that he revealed to her the family secret.

Casillas To Be A Dad Gascoigne

Arrested

SPAIN and real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has confirmed he is to become a father for the first time. The 32-year-old and his partner Sara Carbonero, who is a journalist for Tele 5, revealed the news on their way back from the Confederations Cup in Brazil.

PAUL Gascoigne has been arrested after an alleged drunken assault at a train station. The former football star, who left rehab in America earlier this year, was held after the incident in Hertfordshire.

Casillas, who fell out of favour at Madrid last season, played in the final, in which Spain lost 3-0 to the hosts. Miss Carbonero, meanwhile, was out in Brazil on media duties covering the tournament. “We are very happy,” Casillas told reporters at Barajas Airport, Madrid. The couple met back in February 2010 and it is reported that Casillas’ girlfriend is 13 weeks pregnant. The pair are due to go on holiday to an unknown destination.

A Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to a report of a man allegedly being drunk and disorderly at Stevenage railway station at 10.30pm on Thursday July 4: “Officers attended the location and arrested a 46-yearold male on suspicion of common assault and being drunk and disorderly.” He was taken into custody but was not charged, police said. The Mirror reported that Gascoigne had grabbed a security guard by the throat before attacking ex-wife Sheryl Gascoigne when she tried

to step in. According to the newspaper, he was bailed after being held in a police cell for 12 hours overnight. Earlier this year, Gascoigne said he wanted to “get back to reality” after the latest health scare in his battle with alcohol addiction. In March, the ex-England and Newcastle player said: “When

I’m drinking I forget about everyone. I don’t realise the hurt I’m doing to others but, you know, I’ve got to think about the hurt I was doing to myself. SToKE City goalkeeper Jack Butland could leave the club and move to Spain if he fails to remove Asmir Begovic as the Potters’ first choice shot-stopper, according to the player’s agent. The 20-year-old moved to the Britannia Stadium from Birmingham in January but was immediately loaned back to the Blues for the remainder of the season.

Butland’s agent has warned that the goalkeeper wants to be playing regular football and will not be happy on the bench at Stoke, warning there will be plenty of interest from abroad in the youngster: “If Asmir Begovic does go it means Stoke have got somebody for the future. It might not be this season; it could be the season after. When I was in Barcelona a couple of Spanish clubs wanted to talk to me about taking Jack. “We have to weigh up all possibilities and I have to keep him playing so if Asmir is still here

The world time trial champion completed the 33km course to Mont-SaintMichel in a time of 36 minutes 29 seconds to sit 39 seconds ahead of the second-best time,

F1 - Pit-Lane Safety Schwarzer Joins To Be Reinforced Chelsea

Following the incident at last weekend’s German Grand Prix in which a cameraman was injured by a flying wheel, Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, has announced an immediate ban on anyone other than event marshals and team personnel being present in the pit lane during races and qualifying sessions. Access for approved media will be confined to the pit wall.

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer on a one-year contract. The 40-year-old Australian was released by West London derby rivals Fulham earlier in the summer. Jose Mourinho had been tracking Norwich City’s England goalkeeper John Ruddy but, after reportedly having two offers rejected by the Canaries, turned their attention to Schwarzer.

The Nurburgring incident occurred when, following a pit stop, a wheel became detached from the Red Bull Racing car of Mark Webber as he made his way towards the pit-lane exit. The loose wheel struck a television cameraman who was injured as a result. He is expected to make a full recovery. In order to reduce the risk of similar accidents in the future, two rules changes planned for 2014 are now due to be implemented in time for the next 2013 round. All team personnel working on a car during a stop will now be required to wear head protection, and the pit-lane speed limit during races will be cut from 100km/h to 80km/h (with the exception of Melbourne, Monaco and Singapore, where due to track configuration the limit will remain at 60km/h). The FIA is also expecting a written report from Red Bull Racing which will be shared with other teams in order to help improve pit-lane safety.

Vidic To Miss Man Utd’s PreSeason Tour

Manchester United skipper Nemanja Vidic will miss the club’s pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia.

The club has offered no immediate explanation for Vidic’s surprise absence and there was no hint of any issues when he attended new boss David Moyes’ first press conference last Friday. But Vidic’s absence may be linked to the treatment he has been receiving to his troublesome knee injury that forced him to miss around 12 months of action. Schwarzer first came to England in 1996 to join Bradford City before moving to Middlesbrough in February 1997, going on to play more than 400 times in 11 years for the Teessiders, lifting the League Cup in 2003 and appearing in the 2006 UEFA Cup final against Sevilla. In 2008, he moved to Fulham, spending five years at Craven Cottage, where he made 220 appearances. The Australia No.1 made his international debut in 1994 and has since represented his country 108 times, including at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups. He helped the Socceroos qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil last month and told Sky Sports News: “Once I found out Chelsea were interested in me, it didn’t take very long to make up my mind. “I was looking to find a club that was right for me. Having spoken to the manager, he made it very easy to decide that Chelsea was the right club. “The size of the club, the ambition of the club and the

opportunities at the club ticked all the right boxes. This is the opportunity to join one of the best clubs in the country, if not the world.” Schwarzer has vast experience as a first-choice goalkeeper but is set to play the back-up role to Petr Cech at Stamford Bridge. That’s something the veteran is prepared for but he believes he is still capable of making an impact at his new club. “I know that Petr is No.1,” he added. “That goes without saying. He’s a fantastic goalkeeper. “But what’s important is that I can come to a club like Chelsea and push myself as much as possible. “If I can push Petr Cech to improve as a goalkeeper and help myself improve as a goalkeeper, I’m sure we can learn a lot from each other and I’d be more than happy with that. “There are a lot of games throughout the season so if I can do as well as I believe I am capable of doing then there will be opportunities along the way.”

Getting a Kick Out Of Summer

Big time kick boxing returns to Santa Cruz this Saturday 13 July with World Championship action at the Pabellon Municipal Deportes from 7pm.

Moises Ruibal from Las Palmas first won the 90 kg world title in Santa Cruz in 2008 in a thrilling bout against Muzafer Gemeci, now he is taking on Jiri Zak from the Czech Republic at the top of the bill. There’s another world title at stake in the 72 kg category with local hero Jonay Risco squaring up to Arnaldo Silva. Three more clashes will ensure plenty of bone crunching action. Maximo Suarez is up against Andy Souwer, Elam Ngor faces Abraham Roqueni, and Acoidan slugs it out with Kakin. Tickets start at 15 euros, the Pabellon sports centre is next door to the CD Tenerife football ground.
