THE CAR PEOPLE

The peaceful little town of La Camella was shocked to its roots on Friday when a local resident called the police with news of a gruesome discovery. On starting to clean and prepare for a new tenant in an apartment the family rented out, the body of a newborn baby boy was found in the freezer. it took the Guardia Civil no time to identify the former occupant, a 33-La Orotava woman identified as mayte G.F., and she was immediately taken into custody at playa de las américas Guardia Civil station while the baby’s body was transferred to the Forensic institute for an autopsy to be carried out.
Further details emerged over the weekend which showed the chaotic circumstances in which the baby was born and placed in the freezer, umbilical cord and placenta still attached. The mother herself told police that she had no idea whether the child had been born alive or dead, that she gave birth around a month ago, alone and at night, and in the midst of considerable mental tur-
moil. She was with two of her other children, daughters of around two and three years of age, and had separated from her boyfriend just a couple of months previously. Sources close to the family say that Mayte has a further four children, two teenagers living with extended family, and another two who had been given up for adoption. Unemployed, she was scratching a living from occasional cleaning, and was economically and emotionally in considerable distress during her pregnancy. On Monday, the autopsy results were returned showing that the baby had been alive when born, but had died shortly afterwards due to lack of assistance. Mayte herself has appeared in court imputed (named as a formal suspect in the police investi-
gation) for reckless homicide. She was released on bail at her hearing, though her passport was confiscated, and she has to make periodic appearances in Court. It remains to be seen whether she will be taken into custody again now that the autopsy results show her baby was not stillborn. She, together with her two small daughters, is currently at home in her newly rented apartment in Playa San Juan and is receiving support from her family. Arona Ayuntamiento says that it did not receive a request for assistance at any point while Mayte was in La Camella, and her former neighbours, like the residents of the small town in general, are dealing with their shock as best they can, and say they had had no idea she was even pregnant.

NEwS ON THE ROCK
santa Cruz Court 4 has confirmed the compensation that Arona Ayuntamiento must pay for having used a 1,200 square metre office suite in the Zentral Centre in Playa de las Américas without paying any rent or services for seven years between 2004 and 2012 when it was finally evicted. For rent alone, the council has to reimburse Compañía Popular Canaria SA, the private company which owns the block, 1,478,603 Euros. To this must be added costs for electricity, water, and community charges which Arona refused to pay. The total will come to around 2,000,000 Euros. The Ayuntamiento has known of this decision since April, and this week, the council met to agree 2013’s budget, in which was included a “contingency fund” of 1.6 million Euros for “unforeseen expenses”. After AquíSur published an article suggesting that some expenses were more than “foreseen” and that the Council was trying to conceal the Zentral payment, Hacienda Councillor María Candelaria Padrón admitted that the money was “destined for payments needed to comply with Court judgments”. Two 17-year-old women died and three men of 20 and 21 were injured just after 7am on Monday morning in a car accident on the TF47 (Armeñime to Puerto Santiago) in the Punta Blanca area of Guía de Isora near Puerto Santiago. The car in which they were travelling overturned after colliding with a tree and a wall. Bomberos had to free some of the occupants who were trapped inside; while paramedics could do no more for the women other than confirm their deaths at the scene. Of the injured men, none of whom is said to be seriously injured, one was taken to Hospital Costa Adeje, while the other two were transferred to Hospitén Sur. The policía nacional is seeking a prisoner who escaped from Tenerife II on Tuesday. The convict, identified as Tanausú Álvarez Delgado, was on some form of day release to an agricultural workshop and failed to return to the prison. Police believe that although from the Gracia area of La Laguna, he might be in the El Sobradillo region where his mother lives. He was jailed for house robberies with violence. He was nine months short of release from a sentence for stabbing someone in the course of a robbery. He had been with various convicts at the perimeter of the prison grounds clearing an area of barranco, a task habitually carried out by prisoners at this time of year as an anti-fire precaution that provides physical therapy for the convicts in the process. He had gained trust by successfully completing two previous such missions, but on this occasion he dropped behind the group returning to the prison buildings, and took advantage of a section of 3 metre high but poorly maintained fence to escape. The Guardia Civil, Policía Canaria and Policía Local forces have now joined the Nationals in the search for him. according to sources at spain’s ministry of economy in Santa Cruz, the first wine from Tenerife has been listed on the web of the world’s most prestigious and oldest wine club The Wine Society. 7 Fuentes Listan Negro, Tenerife, 2011 is a red wine, produced by Bodegas Soagranorte in La Orotava. blue Flags In adeje
http://englishtimeadeje.com
On Friday 12th July a number of adeje beaches raised Blue Flags, awarded for the 2013-2014 season under the Foundation for environmental education (Fee) banner.
Adeje tourism councillor Rafael Dolado and deputy mayor Gonzalo Delgado Díaz were in Fañabe for the official unfurling, and flags were also hoisted in El Duque and Troya I and II beaches. Both councillors said they were hopeful that next year the borough would be able to add even more blue flags to the local tally, mentioning Ajabo beach in Callao Salvaje as a likely candidate, as well as Torviscas. They said that the blue flags were a symbol of quality and essential for a tourist destination such as Costa Adeje, and acted as a stimulus for the local economy as well as a reaffirmation for local communities

Vampire Graveyard found in Poland
By Marc Craig Vampires have always fascinated me-when other kids wanted to be cowboys or astronauts, I wanted to be a sith lord (that’s a dark Jedi for non-Star Wars fans) or an immortal “child of the blood”- I must have worried my poor mother sometimes!
after 2 “vampire” skeletons were excavated near a monastery in Sozopol, Bulgaria that were believed to be over 800 years old and had been “staked” through the heart using heavy iron rods. In the past few years over 100 suspected vampires have been unearthed in Bulgaria, in fact, the practice was common until as recently as the early 20th century and even today in some remote villages of Eastern Europe, residents see vampirism as a genuine threat and it’s not unusual for the superstitious to carry garlic and crucifixes as protection-and in extreme cases, bodies are still exhumed so the suspected bloodsucker can be staked.
So when I came across the news that archaeologists in Poland have unearthed what they believe is a vampire burial ground, I jumped at the chance to write an article about my favourite supernatural children of the night! Incidentally try as I might I found absolutely no information about vampire stories here in the Canary Islands-I’m almost disappointed!
The legend of the vampire dates back thousands of years and has
The discovery in Poland, which consists of 4 skeletons, decapitated and buried without possessions with their heads between their legs, was common practice in Eastern Europe during medieval times as it was believed that it would guarantee the vampire would stay dead. Bram Stoker’s most famous novel “Dracula” is usually held responsible for the popularisation and glamorisation of the Vampire. Interestingly, even the biblical Adam has a connection to vampirism, Lilith, his first wife Before Eve, refused to be Adams subordinate and was banished from Eden by God himself (that’s what early girl-power got you-harsh).She became Queen of the Demons and preyed on new born babies, leading to mothers hanging amulets from cribs to ward her off. Greek vampiric entities also turn up in “Homer’s Odyssey” as “Shades”, undead beings that are too insubstantial to be seen by man-unless they consume blood. Another interesting theory involves Judas Iscariot betrayer of Christ for 30 pieces of silver and “Father of all Vampires”. Consumed by remorse he eventually hung himself - only to be cursed by God for his betrayal.
vampire folklore is rabies. Dr Juan Gomez-Alonso, a neurologist at Xeral Hospital in Vigo, Spain, examined this in a report in the journal Neurology. The susceptibility to garlic and light could be due to hypersensitivity, which is a symptom of rabies. The disease can also affect portions of the brain that could lead to disturbance of normal sleep patterns (i.e., becoming nocturnal) and Hypersexuality.” Of course here in The Canary Islands there live many South Americans, but this continent too seems to have escaped the curse of the vampire-however maybe the fact that they have the real thing (vampire bats) may have taken the mystery out of the idea. I could go on and on but my space is limited so I’ll leave my history of Vampirism there for now, whether you think there’s any truth in the stories or you think it’s just superstitious nonsense, at least we’re vampire free here-it’s those damn witches we need to worry about.

yOu would think that admiral horatio nelson would be a figure of hate in Tenerife after his failed attempt to invade and conquer in 1797 but although his defeat is celebrated each year his reputation as a great commander still lives on in santa Cruz.
On Saturday 27 July, two days after La Gesta, the anniversary of the battle that claimed Nelsons right arm on our shores, British and Tenerife forces will face each other again in the capital. The outcome might be a foregone conclusion and the financial crisis has stripped the celebrations down to a token re-enactment but the sense of history is still there and the muskets will fire with pride as shoppers stop in their tracks. It will all start at Alameda del Duque de Santa Elena near the Plaza de España from 6pm, the Asociación Histórico Cultural Gesta 25 de Julio keeps the memory of the British defeat alive and will be on duty in the uniforms of 1797 with a few well preserved replica weapons. Just a few feet below their military boots part of the old battlements of the Castillo de San Cristobal are now a visitor attraction with a special room that holds the Tiger canon that did so much to repel the British troops. Then at 9.30pm the action moves to Plaza Isla de Madera in front of the Teatro Guimera where the tram line turns up into the city.

A makeshift sling and tourniquet allowed the crew to get Nelson back to the Theseus for surgery to remove the arm; he even managed to scramble up the side of the ship shouting defiantly “Let me alone, I have yet my legs left and one arm”. The local defences were well positioned and repelled the invad-

www.tenerife-weekly.com The Insular society for the promotion of people with disabilities (Sinpromi), has launched a campaign for universal accessibility, consisting of four television commercials, which aim to raise awareness about the problems involving physical barriers and communication and change people’s perceptions about accessibility.
The initiative was presented by the Vice-President and Minister of Social Action, Cristina Valid; and the CEO of Sinpromi, Carmen Rosa García. Valid highlighted the importance of “raising awareness of an accessible environment. To a greater or lesser extent, we can all suffer a reduction in our temporary mobility throughout our lives such as using crutches or pushing a pram, so it is important to take into account physical barriers”. Valid confirmed that “the Cabildo has made a great effort in this area working with Sinpromi and thanks to the efforts of different actions from professional associations and city councils; we have a more accessible island. However, we must continue this work because there is still work to be done”. Carmen Rosa García noted that “now we have hotel establishments, trails and beaches all of which are accessible, but we need to continue with this work so that everyone can be independent and not be limited by physical barriers or communication”

Sunday afternoon strollers in Los Cristianos on July 14th were delighted to be part of a flash mob audience, when Carlos popped the question to his long-term partner Colin.
Unsuspecting Colin thought he was meeting friends for a few drinks on a balmy summer afternoon, but what he didn’t know was that Carlos and those same friends had been practising a flash-mob special with dancers from the Let’s Dance school and Tenerife Tigres, from Callao Salvaje. As Colin arrived to the Plaza del Pescador a red carpet was rolled out and a chair and table appeared. Bemused Colin sat and watched, surrounded by delighted onlookers, many of whom had watched the dancers, young and old, practise their moves in advance. As the routine drew to a close and each dancer left a red rose on the table in front of Colin, from behind a pom-pom heart emerged his love, Carlos, who went on bended knee. To the delight of the crown Colin said yes! Well done and good luck to Carlos and Colin and friends, and the Let’s Dance school for a great show. The whole event was also professionally filmed so keep an eye on Youtube for the full event.

Get your kicks on Route 366!
By Steve Andrews
M
any of you will remember the old hit song Route 66 as covered by Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones and many other top acts and now on Tenerife’s TF-366 there is a new bar and restaurant unlike any other on the whole island. Bike Ranch Roca Negra (“Black Rock”) has motorbikes and Harley-Davidsons in particular as its theme.
Roca Negra is situated high above Icod de los Vinos on the road through El Amparo to La Vega. The views are amazing as is just about everything else in this new place to eat, drink and relax. Roberto and Kerstin Schlageter love motorbikes and inside the bar you will see a custom-built HarleyDavidson that was once a police motorcycle. It has a 1500cc engine and has been customized to add Spiderman-style imagery. You won’t see another motorbike like this

anywhere here on Tenerife, or anywhere else for that matter! The couple’s little dog Motte (German for “Moth”) likes bikes too and posed for a photo sitting on his owner’s Harley-Davidson. Roberto and Kerstin are hoping to attract Tenerife’s biker community as regular customers at their premises but are keen to point out that everyone else is more than welcome there too. The bar has only been open for a few weeks but a lot of hard work had gone into renovating and refurbishing what was there before. Now it has many images of the American Wild West with murals by El Pirata decorating the walls. Wild Bill Hickok in cowboy hat and his droopy moustache is the subject of one of the paintings. Roca Negra is open on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to midnight and is well worth visiting. If you are anything like me I am sure you will want to go there again and again! There is an excellent menu of
mainly meat dishes but vegetarians can be catered for too as I discovered when I was treated to a wonderfully fresh and leafy salad and a German-style cheese and onion tortilla served with grilled mushrooms. If you fancy something really special the chef will be happy to cook it for you if you phone and arrange this a day in advance. The bar has a full range of beers,
Iberia Passengers Print Their Own Luggage Tags Spanish airline Iberia may have come up with an industry first with its new service MyBagTag that lets passengers print their own luggage tags at home. Passengers, who check in for their flights online can specify the number of bags they want to check in and download, print and attach the tags to their luggage themselves. The objectives of the MyBagTag service is
to improve the punctuality of flights, save passengers time at the airport, and help ensure their luggage is heading to where it is actually meant to go. MyBagTag has been tested in various Spanish airports and the automatic tag reading reportedly proved to be 100% reliable, regardless of what ink, paper or printer passengers used to print the tags At the moment, MyBagTag can be used on Iberia, Iberia Express and Air Nostrum direct flights. There are plans to include other European and overseas destinations, as well as support connecting flights.
wines and spirits and I can personally recommend their Vino Tinto. Every Sunday there is a barbecue and what an excellent place for it. You can sit outside in the mountain air of the beer garden and take in the sweeping views of Icod de los Vinos and the coastland below. There is a very large car-park and the restaurant has access for disabled people as well.
Roberto tells me there are plans for live music events at Roca Negra as well. I had already fallen in love with the place before he told me that but it is yet another attraction the place will have on offer in the near future. If I lived nearer I would definitely make it my local! For further info phone: 657 033 680 or email kerstin.schlageter@ googlemail.com

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing”, so wrote 18th Century irish statesman edmund Burke, and these words were chosen by spanish economist pedro pérez Fernández to conclude his speech at the inauguration of the 21st adeje summer university, in the presence of the full council and the rector of the university of La Laguna eduardo doménech martínez.
Held in the impressive Convento de Adeje, on the Calle Grande, the opening took place in the presence of many invited guests from Tenerife’s political and financial circles as well as members of the public who were all welcome to attend. Pedro Pérez Fernández was part of Spain’s economic administration from 1979 to 1993 in a number of government departments, and spoke of the development of economic politics, particularly in this current crisis, which will celebrate six years in existence next month, he reminded people. He said, “Economics is full of myths and common misconceptions…but it is the presence of (strong) internal insti-
tutions that will guarantee growth and the proper distribution of wealth and determine national prosperity.” Problems begin when those institutions are paralysed or wander from their set remit and the speaker blamed weak institutional guidance in Spain as one of the reasons the crisis continued here whereas, for instance, the administrations in the United States had adopted a Kensyian approach, in other words active government intervention in the market place, and were now officially out of recession. Citing examples of poor management in Spain the economist mentioned airports with too few passengers, ports that are not cost effective and the fast rail network
which loses money every time a train leaves the station. Finishing his speech Pérez Fernández was a bit more upbeat and referred to Adeje as one example of a region where institutions did work and where political decisions had helped make Adeje one of Spain’s leading tourism destinations. He also praised the council for continuing to host this summer university despite financial constraints. The university runs for a week and includes a diversity of courses on everything from dealing with cranial injuries to film production, innovations in tourism and the role and place of the family in the 21st century.
EXPERIENCED ‘FLY-BUY’ GENERATORS REQUIRED FOR A BUSY WELL ESTABLISHED COMPANY IN ADEJE.
Must be enthusiastic, money driven and self motivated. Basic wage given and fantastic commissions available.

PrOJeCT U TUrn Coming To Tenerife
prOJeCT u Turn, organises adventure trips for people with disabilities and their families, testing their limits and helping build their self-confidence as well as helping them integrate in society and getting jobs.
They teach respect, dignity and value of each individual: and offer opportunities to re-establish their personal development, they show empathy and actively support diversity. Project U Turn’s expeditions, excursions and other activities are designed so that they are possible for each person; the participants are encouraged to explore the limits of their capabilities, and to overcome them: some of the activities can be achieved only when the participants collaborate together. Each participant will have to ask for help, but also to give aid, teaching everyone to learn from others. Each day of the trip is considered a victory, only helping each other can they overcome its challenges. Each day requires a physical and mental commitment. In this way participants exceed what they considered their abilities up to then. As a result the skills they learn at Project U Turn translate into their private and social lives, while they also become aware of their abilities and skills. The group promotes the professional integration of the
participants and strive to attract more employment for people with disabilities. In August, a group of disabled people from Belgium will test their will power and endurance to the limits by “hiking” over Tenerife, a trip that is scheduled to take a week to complete.. They will launch the start of their trip on Saturday August 24th where they will be welcomed by President Ricardo Melchior who will meet all the participants at Poris de Abona beach. The group will begin the first and hardest stage, trekking to their destination of Arico Nuevo. During the course of their trip they will trek across the island, set up camps and spend the night. They will travel by jeep, sleep in barracks,
buzzing about This week has been a busy week for Forever Living – good job i am taking my bee pollen tablets – i’ve been buzzing about all over the place!
Last Thursday I was invited by Natacha from the Make Up Shop in Coral Mar, Costa del Silencio to be part of her mini market held every Thursday outside her shop from 10.30 until 2pm. I’ll be there again this coming Thursday, so pop along and try out some of our products free of charge. On Saturday I had a fantastic day at the Cyder Cup Golf Day on the Amarilla Golf. Our suntan lotion proved particular popular – or maybe it was just the free “rub in” service! I can honestly say I have never had my hands on so many men in such a short space of time! Thank you to Oasis FM and to Laura from Black Tower Financial Management Services for organizing such a great day –
all in aid of raising money for local charity Helping Hands. As a result of the interest shown in the products both from the great coverage by Tenerife Weekly and from the recent events Forever Living has been proud to be associated with – I am now looking for members to join my team. This is a great way to meet people and to increase your monthly income Please email me or phone me for an informal chat. I need serious hard working team members who
visit Mount Teide, the black sands at Chio and trek to Garrachico, Los Gigantes and El Medano. They will swim in the ocean, take part in kayaking and board a boat for some whale watching. Project U Turn also organise trips in countries or regions that do not have western prosperity. On the one hand, participants realize that local people also have to overcome their own challenges every day, and may have fewer opportunities than they. On the other hand, the group is supporting the local economy. Also coming up in the groups schedule are trips to Morocco and Nicaragua. For more information about the groups work visit their website: http://www.projectu-turn. com/index_uk.html
like meeting people and who will be seriously committed to building the team and to the business – so if you do not fit in to this model, please do not waste my time! Other languages are also a bonus. Over the last few weeks we have covered a wide variety of Forever Living products, starting with the aloe vera drinking gels, our sports related products, treatments for cellulite, pet products, our popular beehive range, our detox programme, some of our lotions and creams and our lovely Sonya Skin Product range. Judith of Origins Wellness Gym in Pearly Grey Hotel, Callao Salvaje has raved about our Freedom drinking gel and discussed some of our vitamins and supplements. But we are not finished yet – Forever Living still has more products to offer, so please continue to watch this space! I will be at Tasca El Conde (Roque del Conde) on Saturday 27 July from 2 pm onwards – see you there.

TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes has opened a photographic exhibition entitled “Ausencia de Sujeto” Absence of Subject featuring images by August Sander, considered to be one of the best German portrait photographers and Michael Somoroff, who has exhibited his work in some of the best museums and exhibition centres in the world. This exhibition, which is organized in collaboration with Admira, is curated by Diana Edkins and Julian Sander, with the contribution of the August Sander Archive. The exhibition can be viewed on the premises of the centre of contemporary art of the Cabildo de Tenerife until 13 October, Tuesday to Sunday, from 10.00am to 8.00pm. A total of 87 pieces - 81 photographs works and six videos - make up this new exhibition, it is a tribute by Michael Somoroff to the working people of the 20th century, with the work of legendary photographer August Sander. Guía de Isora will be holding a Crafts Fair in the Plaza Nuestra Señora de la Luz in front of the church on Sunday 8 September between 10am and 6pm. There will be loads of local arts and crafts, and foods, on display and for purchase. These are always great fun, and Guía de Isora is a lovely old town, so this is definitely one not to be missed.
The Cabildo de Tenerife and the Ayuntamiento de Arona will create an urban Consortium for the El Mojon area, an area that covers more than one million square meters. The island Minister for planning, Pino de León, recently met with Councillors of urbanism and environment, Carmelo García and Antonio Sosa, to lay the groundwork for the creation of this urban tool, involving the two administrations.
Pino de León said that this initiative will enable the development of the “very important” partial plan for the municipality of Arona, “with its own legal personality and capacity for management and execution”. In this sense, island Councillor stated that the urban Consortium will allow the development and regeneration of the whole area, “which combines tourism with the commercial and residential uses”. The creation of this body will also allow the streamlining of procedures with the intention of promoting the development of this strategic area, which also provides access to the tourist areas of Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas and is an especially important area due
to its proximity to the Tenerife South Airport. “Ultimately, it will attract new investment to the area that will generate economic development and encourage job creation, which is a priority for the Council”, highlighted Pino de León. The establishment of this kind of
“unique opportunity”, means you can solve any problem related to the development of the plan, “it is an important step forward that will provide more flexibility and more legal certainty to potential investors,” concluded the Councillor.
special difficulties, the stability of staff and the accessibility of its areas”. Ramón Fariña gave thanks for receiving the award and said that “it is fruit of our labour policy which has led McDonald’s since its launch in Tenerife, employing people with disabilities and fostering stability in employment. I want to thank Simproni for the prize and accept it for all the people who are part of McDonald´s Tenerife. For us, integration is equal not different”. The members of the jury received 17 applications and chose the eight finalists: McDonald’s de Tenerife, Grupo Eulen SA, Select Service Partner SA,
Leroy Merlin La Laguna SA, Gesplan SA, Lithografia Romero SA, Hotel H10 Las Palmeras and Hotel H10 Conquistador. After studying the nominations, the jury unanimously decided McDonald’s de Tenerife deserved the award for its many merits. The companies that take part in the selection process for the Sinpromi Integrata 2013 award must meet a series of requirements such as having a head office in Spain or representation on the island of Tenerife, employ a minimum of 2% of disabled people, ensure social integration of the disabled and not be classed as a special employment centre.
McDonald’s Tenerife Wins Sinpromi Award
The Cabildo de Tenerife, together with Sinpromi - the society for the promotion of people with disabilities, has recognised McDonald’s of Tenerife with the Sinpromi Integra 2013 prize for their work in employing people with disabilities. The Sinpromi Integra 2013 award, launched this year as part of the twentieth anniversary of Sinpromi, recognizes the work of companies that have developed actions dedicated to the inclusion of people with disabilities beyond the legal requirements and which have a social responsibility policy applied to the field of disability.
The award ceremony took place on Tuesday in the presence of the Cabildo’s President, Ricardo Melchior; the Vice-Presidents Aurelio Abreu and Cristina Valid; the Chief Executive Officer of Sinpromi, Carmen Rosa García; and the franchisee and partner of McDonald’s in Tenerife, Ramón Fariña. Delia Herrera welcomed this initiative as commendable stating
that “every day there is a greater personal and social commitment of young people from our community and I am pleased to see that on our island children are increasingly supportive”. Herrera also stressed the fact that the campaign, in association with Karipen, is “necessary that these types of social initiatives become visible and to spread the message that it is time we all work together to promote the educational development of future generations”.

Street Revitalisation
The Department of youth has started a street revitalisation project called Este verano, en tu barrio 2013 – This summer, in your neighbourhood 2013, which brings recreational and sports activities to young people.
The project runs throughout July and August and will take place in various municipalities serving each of them as a meeting point for the youngsters. The meeting points for this summer project are: • Valle San Lorenzo: August 28 - Plaza de la Iglesia • Cabo Blanco: August 1 Explanada junto al centro
de Salud • La Camella: 24 July and 7 August - Plaza de la Iglesia • Guargacho: July 31 and August 21 - Polideportivo • Buzanada: July 25 and August 8 - Plaza de la Iglesia/
polideportivo • Las Galletas: July 23rd Ramblas • Guaza: July 30-August 6 Plaza • El Fraile: 20 and 27 August - Plaza de la Iglesia
The Council is promoting the consolidation between forestry and the restoration of the mountain areas. One of the lines of work being developed by the technical service of planning and forestry projects is the replacement of the foreign pine trees to native vegetation, using various forestry techniques, such as selective logging, and clearing.
The Island Minister for the environment, Ana Lupe Mora, explained that, “the goal is to create stable and naturalized mass of Canary Island pine and native vegetation”. These works have meant a large investment in the past. The evolution of the forest has been allowed to vary, and the forests of Tenerife have two fundamental problems, one is the existence of masses of foreign pines that take up a lot of space; and the other is
excessive overcrowding of pine trees. In the first case, the foreign pines occupy surfaces in which Canarian pine would have naturally developed. Secondly the reforestation carried out since the middle of the last century when all necessary treatments that should have ensured that
the local vegetation thrived has failed, resulting in the pine trees growing weak resulting in a mass of dead wood in the area. This means the area is especially vulnerable to forest fires. During July, as part of the clearing campaign and within the forestry plans for the forests of Tenerife, auctions have been opened for companies to apply for the contract of clearing the affected areas. The winning bidder will do the work of forest restoration, removal of alien species, reforestation with native species and restoration of the landscape in exchange for the wood they clear away. Mainland News In Brief The Spanish league has launched an investigation into a second-division match between Racing Santander and Hercules for possible match-fixing. League spokesman Juan Carlos Santamaria said that the league is examining Racing’s 3-0 home win over Hercules on June 8th. Racing denied any wrongdoing, Hercules refused to comment. The investigation comes while state prosecutors continue to look into an alleged match-fix between top-division’s Levante and Deportivo in April. Santamaria said the investigation into the Racing-Hercules game was launched after a report from a bookmaker that “warned there had been suspicious bets” placed on the game. Spain’s telecoms watchdog saysit had provisionally set prices for Vodafone and Orange to access Telefonica’s superfast internet installations following an agreement between the three earlier this month. The prices offered to Orange and Vodafone to access the market leader’s fibre optic installations in individual buildings are 18 to 24% below the original cost set for the two companies by Telefonica, the regulator said. Spain’s Queen Sofia has been booed by angry crowds as she arrived to open a new hotel in Cangas del Narcea, northern Spain. Police had to hold back crowds who were protesting against cuts to the coal mining industry. The Queen was accompanied by the Minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism. More than a hundred miners took part in the demonstrations. Spain’s economy may be suffering but tourism to the country is going from strength to strength, according to new statistics revealed by the Spanish Tourism Board. During May 2013, Spain saw a 9.3% year on year increase in UK visitors to Spain, making it the largest international tourism market to the country and representing well over a quarter of all international visitors (27.1 per cent). Cumulatively from January until the end of May 2013, Spain welcomed more than 19.8 million international tourists, up 3.9% year on year. The UK maintains its position as Spain’s strongest market seeing a cumulative year on year rise of 4.4% and representing over 22% of all international visitors, followed by Germany (16.4% ) and France (16.4% ). In terms of spending, from January until the end of May 2013, Spain benefitted from more than 18 million euros from tourism, representing a cumulative rise of 7.9% compared to the same period last year. The UK is accountable for the largest share of tourism expenditure (18.4%), followed by Germany (16.5%) and France (10%). After weeks of international pressure and anger from Latin America, Spain apologized to Bolivia for the July 2 incident involving the detention of President Evo Morales’ plane. The Spanish ambassador in La Paz, Ángel Vázquez, hand-delivered a letter to the Bolivian authorities in which the government expressed regret over the affront Morales suffered when he was flying back from Moscow. Spain saw itself drawn into the situation as several European nations refused overflight rights to Morales’ airplane on suspicion that it was carrying NSA leaker and accused spy Edward Snowden, who is wanted by U.S. authorities. The plane had to land in Vienna and was able to leave only after authorities searched it and determined Snowden was not on board. “We regret dearly the incident President Morales went through, the uncomfortable situation he lived [through] and [that] he has expressed,” said Vázquez in a press conference with local journalists. The contents of the letter have not been made public. The ambassador said the Bolivian plane always had permission to fly over its airspace. “Spain was involved in this situation against its will,” said the ambassador. “Nevertheless, we present our apologies, since our behaviour was an inadequate way to treat a president.”

Brit Cocaine Smuggler Arrested In Spain
Spanish police have announced they have arrested notorious suspected British drug dealer Brian Charrington. The 57-year-old is alleged to have run an international trafficking ring involving cocaine from Venezuela. He was detained at his luxury villa on the Costa Blanca in a joint operation by UK and Spanish officers. His girlfriend and son were also arrested along with 10 other people in Spain and Venezuela.
A police statement said Charrington was “one of the 10 criminals most investigated by European police and leader of an international drug-trafficking organisation”. The statement said officers had seized 220kg (485lb) of cocaine hidden in an apartment in L’Albir near the tourist resort of Benidorm. They also impounded property and bank accounts worth more than five million euros. It is claimed Charrington, originally
from Middlesbrough, smuggled tons of cocaine into Europe via an armada of yachts. Charrington is believed to have started as a car and drugs dealer in the 1980s and went on to build an international criminal empire. His arrest comes hot on the heels of two other arrests of suspected British

drugs barons in recent weeks. On July 10, Kevin Hanley, wanted in connection with a multimillion-pound drug seizure, was caught in a sting operation in Athens. Two days before, convicted drug trafficker Mark Lilley was caught hiding naked in a panic room in his luxury villa in Malaga.
After spending several days in the hospital, opera singer Placido Domingo said that an early diagnosis for a blocked blood vessel by a medical team in Madrid saved him from possibly more serious medical complications.
Speaking at Madrid’s opera house alongside one of the doctors who treated him, the 72-year-old Domingo said he had felt unwell after a rehearsal and quickly sought medical help. The tenor said Dr. Carlos Gonzalez then detected a case of deep vein thrombosis and applied the appropriate treatment: “I thought I would return from the check-up straight away back to the rehearsal,” Domingo said. “But I was told, ‘No, there is something serious here’.” Gonzalez explained that a blood clot had formed in Domingo’s right leg and moved up to his lungs where it then lodged in an artery. He said it was not an unusual condition, and that it was often linked to spending hours sitting down on long flights. “It sounds catastrophic, but it didn’t turn out like that,” Gonzalez said. “We established an early diagnosis, and there should be a good recovery, a complete and full recovery.” Domingo said he hopes to be well enough to sing at the Salzburg Festival in early August: “I tried to cancel it,” the Spaniard said, but he was told by festival organizers that the baritone they had to replace him hadn’t fully learned the role, so he decided to continue. “He also looks forward to keeping his engagements in Verona where he will sing and conduct ‘Operalia,’” said Nancy Seltzer,
the singer’s representative in the U.S. The hospitalization forced him to cancel a handful of appearances, including six shows of “Il Postino” at the Spanish capital’s Teatro Real. The singer expects to spend three weeks recuperating in Madrid. The Spanish opera star has maintained a vigorous schedule since recovering from colon cancer surgery in 2010. He said he had already worked out “very lightly” on an exercise bike.

Juan Carlos Prado museum Visits morocco Goes Green madrid is well known for sun, paella and the sights, not so much the lights. But if you’re a keen energy manager you might want to pop into spain’s national art gallery soon for that very reason.
KinG Juan Carlos was greeted by moroccan monarch mohammed Vi on his arrival on monday for a fourday state visit to the north african nation. The apir left the airport together en route for the royal Guest house.
The entire route between the airport and the capital was decorated with the flags of the two nations, and at some places there were members of the public who cheered the passage of the motorcade holding up signs written in Spanish welcoming Juan Carlos. The close relationship between the two monarchs has been presented by diplomatic sources as one of the key elements of this visit, which will serve to strengthen and nourish bilateral relations, currently in one of their best periods ever, with trade relations on the rise. One additional gesture confirming the affection be-
tween the two kings is the fact that, for the first time, Mohammed VI has invited a foreign head of state to visit the country during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The Spanish king travelled to Morocco accompanied by Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo and royal chief of staff Rafael Spottorno. Four other Spanish government ministers as
well as 27 executives from the major Spanish companies with interests in Morocco, 14 deans of Spanish universities, the director of the Cervantes Institute, Victor Garcia de la Concha, the heads of Spain’s main business federations and the government’s high commissioner for Brand Spain, Carlos Espinosa de los Monteros all flew into Rabat on Tuesday.
The Prado Museum in central Madrid is overhauling its lighting system by installing LED lights in every room. ScottishPower’s parent company Iberdrola is working on the ‘Lighting the Prado’ project which will take four years to finish. Prado Museum hopes to slash its electricity use by up to 75% and spend less on maintenance work as LED devices have a service life of over 15 years. The new installation is expected to cut the gallery’s emissions by around 500 tonnes of CO2 a year. The news coincides with the unveiling of a clutch of the gallery’s newly restored paintings, three works by Ribera, Goya and Herrera the Younger and the upcoming rehabilitation of a painting by El Greco. Works of art need to be lit carefully to stop any fading of the colours and the energy supplier believes the new lighting system fits the bill perfectly. Iberdrola said in a statement: “The absence of UV radiation and spikes in emissions will improve the conditions for conserving the works. The new system will also enhance the exhibition conditions, as it will improve the clarity of vision, intensify the colours and create an effect of depth without distorting the compositions.”
www.tenerife-weekly.com Dozens of people were trampled at the famous Pamplona Bull Run after becoming trapped at the entrance to the bullring. A 19-year-old Spanish man is in a “very serious” condition and a 28-year-old man from Ireland has suffered chest trauma, authorities said. At least 23 other people were treated in hospital after Saturday’s event in the Spanish city.
Runners and bulls became trapped together in the bottleneck for almost two minutes when the weight of people forced shut a door normally kept open. Goring injuries are not uncommon, but injuries from stampedes are rare. Other injuries on the festival’s penultimate day included a 35-year-old American gored in the buttocks, and an 18-year-old from Spain gored in the armpit. The popular tourist event, which lasts for nine days, sees runners tearing frantically through the city’s cobbled streets pursued by the bulls. Fourteen people have died in the last 100 years of the San Fermin festival, an event that dates from the 13th century. The bull run takes place at 8am every morning for one week in July. Saturday’s run lasted just four minutes and 15 seconds. Three men were gored by bulls while racing through Pamplona on the previous day. The three runners, a 20-year-old American and two Spaniards aged 31 and 42, were all taken to hospital. The run turned dangerous when a half-tonne black bull, part of the galloping herd of six sharp-horned bulls and six steers, separated and began charging into runners. The animal charged at one of

the Spanish victims and tossed him around with its horns for almost 30 seconds as fellow runners tried to pull the beast away by its tail. The man clung to one of the horns as screams were heard all around. Helpers eventually dragged the victim to safety by his feet. The American man who was gored has so far only been identified by his initials - PE. He was reportedly injured in the abdomen. Another three people, including the 48-yearold American, were taken to hospital with injuries suffered in falls and trampling during the sixth bull run of the hugely popular festival. None of the six taken to the hospital were said to be in a serious condition. The gorings were the first of this year’s runs, during which thousands of thrill-seekers race daily with the bulls along a 850-metre 930-yard route from a holding pen to the city bull ring. The event lasted just under five minutes, roughly double the normal length. Longer runs normally occur when some of the bulls get separated from the pack and become disoriented and more dangerous. The black bull which caused most of the panic made several more attempts to charge at people before he was eventually guided along the narrow streets to join the rest for the pack in the pen of the packed bull ring. The nationally televised runs, are

rants. Many participants, dressed in white with red kerchiefs round their necks, drink all night before the early morning run. Dozens of people are injured each year in the “encierros,” as the runs are called in Spanish. Most get hurt after tripping and falling in the rush.
Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was faced with calls for his resignation over a slush fund scandal agitating his ruling Popular Party. The issue blew up again after the publication of friendly mobile text messages he is said to have sent to the disgraced treasurer at the heart of the affair.
The leader of Spain’s main opposition Socialist Party, Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, said he was severing all contact with the prime minister and his party: “Given the unsustainable political situation in Spain, the Socialist Party calls for the immediate resignation of Mariano Rajoy as head of the government. Mr Rajoy’s conduct in this situation can be summarised quite simply: silence, lies, and after what we have learned today, collusion, extremely serious collusion.” Protesters, angered by the corruption allegations rallied outside the Popular Party’s Madrid headquar-
The fighting bulls used in the centuries-old fiesta can weigh up to at 1,380lbs (625kgs) and have killed 15 people since record-keeping began in 1924. The most recent death took place four years ago when a bull gored a 27-year-old Spaniard in the neck, heart and lungs.
ters, chanting “Thieves!” and “Here is Ali Babi’s cave!”. The centre-right daily El Mundo newspaper published images of the alleged text messages between Rajoy and Luis Barcenas, the former ruling party treasurer who is in pre-trial detention as part of a separate corruption inquiry. Barcenas is suspected of running a party slush fund financed by corporate donors who were then rewarded with state contracts. The cash was allegedly used to supplement senior party members’ salaries. According to El Mundo, the prime minister sent supportive messages to Barcenas between May 2011 and March 2013, ending just two months after the scandal erupted. Rajoy kept in “direct and permanent contact” with Barcenas, El Mundo said. “Luis, I understand, be strong. I will call you tomorrow. Best wishes,” said one of the messages purportedly from Rajoy to Barcenas, dated January 18 this year when El Mundo first published allegations over the slush fund.
“It is not good to try to determine what we will say or to comment on things that must be presented to the courts, which we must all respect,” read another message allegedly sent by Rajoy. The Popular Party, which has ruled with an absolute majority since winning an election landslide in September 2011, hit back at the opposition call for the prime minister to step down.”It is pitiful that Rubalcaba, in his distress, is calling for resignations in collusion with the lies of a man under police investigation,” said Carlos Floriano, the Popular Party’s deputy secretary. The Popular Party has repeatedly denied the allegations. Rajoy denies any wrongdoing. A Spanish judge remanded Barcenas to custody on June 27 over separate allegations including money laundering and tax fraud. He said the move was aimed at preventing him from fleeing and to preserve evidence. Barcenas is being investigated over tens of millions of euros he allegedly stashed in Swiss bank accounts.

www.tenerife-weekly.com Ten years ago the Iberian lynx was near extinction but today, thanks to an imaginative conservation programme that has brought Spanish hunters, farmers and the tourist industry under its wing, its numbers have tripled from 94 to 312.
“We can’t claim victory yet but now there is hope,” said Miguel Ángel Simón, the director of the programme for the recovery of the lynx in Andalusia. Just five years ago the animal was classified as critically endangered. The project, jointly funded by the Andalusian government and the European Union, has been singled out for the second time by the EU as an exemplary conservation programme. Brussels is funding 40% of the €26m needed to extend the project into the neighbouring regions of Extremadura, Castile-La Mancha and Murcia, as well as Portugal. According to Simón, when they first carried out a census in the lynx’s key habitats in the Sierra Morena and the Doñana national park, not only were there few lynxes

but the rabbit population had also been severely depleted by disease. Rabbits are the lynx’s main source of food. Simón says they began breeding lynxes in captivity in case they became extinct in the wild. When the current project was launched in 2006 the Andalusian government worked with farmers and hunting clubs and persuaded them that saving the lynx was in everyone’s interest. Lynx-spotting has become a tourist attraction; as well as creating 31 full-time jobs; forestry work carried out under the programme has provided much-needed work for hundreds of small businesses in the area. The second phase of the programme involved trying to expand the narrow gene pool of the lynxes in the Doñana region. Lynxes from the Sierra Morena were released into the area and, thanks to the efforts of one male in particular, nicknamed Caribou, last year 61% of new-born lynxes in Doñana were descended from Sierra Morena animals. In May 2014 the third phase of the programme is due to begin, introducing animals into Portugal and other regions.
Consulates In Spain Assist More Than 4,600 Britons Last Year
Consular staff in Spain assisted a total of 4,658 British citizens in need last year, according to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s (FCO’s) annual British Behaviour Abroad Report 2013.
Spain, the country most popular with British tourists and expatriates, saw significant decreases in arrests, detentions and hospitalisation cases – mainly due to local initiatives involving consular staff, police and hospital authorities. Consular staff dealt with 101 arrests for drug offences in 2012/13 compared with 143 the year before. General arrests reported to Consulates fell from to 1,599 from 1,909 a year earlier, partly due to a new emphasis on directing resources towards the most vulnerable cases. Hospitalisation cases fell to 899 from 1,105 in the previous year. Consular staff have been working closely with local hospitals to make them more aware of the types of cases where the FCO can add real value. Consulates have also strengthened ties with charities that support British nationals in less critical situations, allowing staff to focus on the most needy. Reported rape and sexual assault cases increased to
70 last year compared with 40 in 2011/12. Spain, along with Greece and Turkey, were the three countries in which the largest numbers of such cases were reported – destinations popular with young Brits for their busy nightlife. Foreign & Commonwealth Office Minister Mark Simmonds, said: “I am proud that our staff continue to offer vital support to thousands of British travellers and residents around the world. Each case can represent great distress for the individuals concerned and for their families. “I encourage all British travellers to do everything they can to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip by taking some basic steps to prepare themselves before departure, including taking out comprehensive travel insurance and researching their destination. “I am deeply concerned to see an increase in the number of reported rape and sexual assault cases involving British people. The priority for our consular staff is the safety and wellbeing of British travellers and we will continue to work, including with other Governments and tour operators, to help to prevent further cases and provide all possible support for victims. This support includes explaining local procedures, accompanying people to the police station, helping them
deal with local authorities and medical staff, and contacting friends and family at home if that is wanted.” The report reveals that alcohol continues to be a major factor in cases involving young people visiting the Balearics, Turkey and Greek islands. Consulates in Spain encourage visiting Britons to pack three essential items: • Comprehensive travel
insurance – read the small print, declare preexisting medical conditions and make sure it covers you for everything you want to do, including adventurous activities. An uninsured person who is seriously injured or dies abroad can lead to repatriation bills running to thousands of pounds. • A European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) – so
you can get state-funded medical care that may become necessary while you are in Spain. An EHIC is free and can be obtained via www.ehic.org.uk or by calling +44 (0) 845 606 2030. • Information about local laws – the more clued up you are, the less likely you are to find yourself on the wrong side of the law. Country-specific local laws and customs can be found
at www.gov.uk/foreigntravel-advice . Spain received 13.6 million Britons during 2012 – almost a quarter of all overseas tourists - and an estimated 800,000 Britons are resident for all or part of the year. The countries where Britons are most likely to need consular assistance are the Philippines, Thailand and Pakistan. Spain is 11th on the list.

Tweet yourself Heathrow Option announced Out Of Purgatory
heaThrOW airport chiefs have announced three options for a new third runway at the west London site, saying that any of the proposals will be good for Britain. each option allows heathrow to move from 480,000 flights a year to 700,000 or more, but the airport’s bosses said fewer people would be affected by noise than at present.
The bad news is that all of the options involve some properties being compulsory purchased and some being demolished, and there may have to be major work on the M25 motorway to accommodate a new runway. There will also need to be a sixth terminal at Heathrow. A new runway would see the airport able to handle 130 million passengers a year, rather than the current 70 million. The Heathrow executives, outlining their proposals in London, said they did not think there would be a need for a fourth runway at Heathrow until at least 2040.
These are three options:
• North West - A 3,500-metre-long runway to the north west of the airport with passengers accessing it from a new Terminal 6 (T6) and an extended Terminal 2 (T2). Building of the runway would affect the villages of Harmondsworth and Longford, with 950 properties facing demolition. Part of the M25 would have to be put in a tunnel. The runway would cost £17bn and could

be completed by 2026. • South West - A 3,500-metre-long runway covering an area of reservoirs and needing the compulsory purchase of properties in Stanwell Moor and 850 possible demolitions. Passengers would access via T6 and an extended T2. The construction would be complex and challenging and would take longer and be more expensive than the other options. It could be ready by 2029 at a cost of £18bn. • North - The quickest and cheapest option but would allow only 700,000 flights a year with a runway only 2,800 metres long. Passengers would access via an extended T5 and extended T2.
A total of 2,700 properties could be demolished, with the villages of Sipson, Harlington and Cranford Cross affected. This runway could be finished by 2025 at a cost of £14bn. Heathrow chief executive Colin Matthews said: “After half a century of vigorous debate but little action, it is clear the UK desperately needs a single hub airport with the capacity to provide the links to emerging economies which can boost UK jobs, GDP and trade. It is clear that the best solution for taxpayers, passengers and business is to build on the strength we already have at Heathrow. We are showing how that vision can be achieved whilst keeping the impact on local residents to an absolute minimum.”
Practising Roman Catholics believe purgatory is the place they believe they will go after death, as long as they are “in a state of grace” having confessed and been absolved of their sins. The “indulgence” offer comes ahead of Pope Francis’ trip to Brazil next week. It applies particularly to Catholics who click on to his Twitter feed on Catholic World Youth Day, a week-long event that starts on July 22. Indulgences are given against the time believers may spend in purgatory following their death - the more indulgences they are granted, the less time they get to spend in the “halfway” house between Earth and heaven. However, a Vatican official insisted, a place in paradise still requires more than a click on a website: “You can’t obtain indulgences like getting a coffee from a vending machine,” the
Vatican’s Archbishop Claudio Maria Celli told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. “What really counts is that the tweets the Pope sends from Brazil or the photos of the Catholic World Youth Day that go up on Pinterest produce authentic spiritual fruit in the hearts of everyone,” said the archbishop. The Sacred Apostolic Penitentiary, a court set up to deal with the forgiveness of sins, is encouraging people who cannot afford to see the Pope in Brazil to follow him through TV or the internet. But it stresses events must be followed live, with proper devotion, and a casual websurf will not win any time off for good behaviour. Indulgences fell out of favour in the Middle Ages because corrupt churchmen gave them in exchange for money. They were a contributory factor to the setting up of the Protestant church, where the idea was that the believer had a direct conversation with God, rather than through a priest who interceded on his or her behalf.

The selection process was running parallel with regular SAS trials and has now been abandoned due to the deaths. For the regular version of the Special Forces elite, the trials would involve a 40-mile speed march with about 55lb on their backs, including a replica rifle, normally completed over a 20-hour period. However, the process would be slightly reduced for the reservist version or split up, but nevertheless gruelling. Military sources have indicated soaring temperatures may have been to blame for their deaths, the investigation into their deaths is likely to focus on the climate and whether enough preparations were put in place. Colonel Richard Kemp, former
Tenerife Weekly - 19th July 2013 - 25th July 2013 commander of British troops in Afghanistan, pointed out the difference between the selection processes for the regular Army and the Special Forces, where the onus is on individual achievement and selfmotivation: “The Army relies a lot on the buddy-buddy system, in other words of either a commander or fellow soldier looking out for their mates to see if they are exhibiting any symptoms of heat illness. Of course if they are doing SAS selection ... then a lot of that is done as individuals.” The Ministry of Defence and police are both investigating what happened. The soldiers’ families have been informed. The MoD has refused to confirm that the three were members of the TA aspiring to join the reservists’ branch of the SAS. A spokesman said that there are no plans to change “routine exercises” in light of the incident. The Brecon Beacons is one of several locations British military use as part of their training. The deaths occurred near the Storey Arms activity centre. The area is rugged and the sprawling terrain helps prepare soldiers physically and mentally for warfare as well as put their logistic skills to the test, making it an ideal area for elite forces personnel like the SAS. However the Beacons’ jagged topography can prove dangerous even to the most hardened and physically
Linda Bellingham Diagnosed With Cancer Popular actress and presenter Lynda Bellingham has revealed she has been diagnosed with cancer. The 65-year-old, best known for her roles on Loose Women and the Oxo television adverts, has postponed a theatre tour, but vowed “nothing’s going to stop me coming back next year”.
Bellingham, who has two children, was due to start a tour of Kay Mellor’s A Passionate Woman in Sheffield in September. However, in a statement she said: “I’m devastated not to be able to honour my commitments to the play this year. But having toured many times before, I’m aware of the sheer stamina needed and I need to prioritise my recovery. That said, nothing’s going to stop me coming back next year, and I can’t wait to be a ‘passionate woman’.” No further details of her illness have been released. Bellingham starred in the Oxo adverts, which ran from 1983 to 1999, as the mother of a squabbling family. Her acting roles have included roles in All Creatures Great And Small and the sitcom Second Thoughts, she
also presents ITV series Country House Sunday and was a regular panellist on talk show Loose Women. Bellingham, who appeared as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing four years ago, has been a high-profile supporter of Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support since her sister Barbara died from lung cancer. Sheffield Theatres artistic director Daniel Evans said: “A Passionate Woman is an extraordinary play about an extraordinary woman, and that woman is Lynda Bellingham. She is the heart of this production, and it’s inconceivable that we would do it without her.”

fit. Earlier this year, an army captain was found dead on a snow-covered Corn Du mountain. It was thought that Rob Carnegie had been taking part in a march in freezing conditions in the area as part of a selection process for the Special Forces regiment, when he collapsed and died.
The Army’s website said the Brecon Beacons were used because they are so demanding and prepare soldiers for the “extraordinary things” they have to do on deployment: “Training for high-intensity, light-role war fighting is the way soldiers and officers are prepared for any operational situation they may
face - conventional war, counter insurgency, security sector reform, peacekeeping or supporting civil authorities. This ensures that the training is as close to current operations and pre-deployment training as possible, whilst maintaining the ability to train for high intensity war fighting”.
Swimmer Dies In Channel Charity Event
Donations have been pouring in for a charity swimmer Susan Taylor who died while attempting to cross the English Channel. The 34-year-old collapsed just one mile from the French coast on Sunday and she was later pronounced dead in hospital.
Mrs Taylor was pulled from the water and on to a support boat by her brother David, a paramedic, who battled to save her. Her husband, Stephen, was also on board as attempts were made to resuscitate his wife. More than 2,000 people donated to Mrs Taylor’s fundraising page as the current total raised topped more than £40,000 in the two days after her death. She had been attempting to raise money for Rainbows Hospice and Diabetes UK through her Facebook page Create A Ripple Channel Swim. Comedian David Walliams - who swam the Channel in 2006 - is believed to have pledged £1,000 after a donation was made under his name: “Sending all my love to Susan’s family and friends,” had been written on the page. The Little Britain star tweeted later: “Despite the shock & sadness, it’s good to see heroic Susan Taylor’s charity total rising. Please give what you can.” He also tweeted a link to the page, writing: “Susan Taylor’s channel swim attempt very sadly ended in tragedy. This is her charity page if you want to donate.” Mrs Taylor had reportedly written in a blog post her ambition to follow in Walliams’ footsteps by swimming the Channel: “I’ve had an ambition to fol-
low in comedian David Walliams’ strokes and swim the Channel since I was a child,” she wrote. The charities which Mrs Taylor was raising money for also paid tribute to her. Geoff Ellis, chief executive at Rainbows Hospice, described her as a “wonderful woman”. “She has been a much loved ambassador at Rainbows for over two years, helping out at events and tirelessly fundraising for us,” he said. “She was more than an ambassador; she was part of the Rainbows family.” Barbara Young, chief executive at Diabetes UK, said the charity was “extremely sad” to hear of Mrs Taylor’s death and offered condolences and support to her family. Speaking from the family home in Barwell, Leicestershire, Mrs Taylor’s fa-
ther said he was devastated: “I’ve lost the best person in the world. She was just wonderful,” Arthur Wright said. He said that Mrs Taylor had given up her full-time job to carry out charitable work and was working part-time as an accountant. She had also done wingwalking and a parachute jump, and was a qualified rally driver. Supporters who were following Mrs Taylor’s progress through a tracker link on her Facebook page began to leave concerned messages when the updates stopped and the boat appeared to travel off course. Mrs Taylor’s crossing was being overseen by the Channel Swimming Association, one of the two official British organisations that authorise the attempts.

The World’s Hardest Footrace
They are either very brave, or extremely stupid. These brave runners take on the world’s toughest foot race. The Badwater ultramarathon started on monday, with competitors racing from death Valley to mount Whitney in California – billed as the world’s toughest foot race.
In searing 130F heat, they run 135 miles through three mountain ranges in some of the harshest terrain on the planet. Runners battle through the sweltering conditions, on long roads which stretch out for miles ahead. Competitors often pass signs which read ‘Caution! Extreme heat danger’. The Badwater Ultramarathon is not for the faint-hearted. Competitors train all year around for the event, knowing that they will run in some of the planet’s toughest conditions. To train to cope with the searing 55C heat, racers often prepare by sitting in saunas for up to an hour. This helps acclimatise the body to the extreme desert heat which they will experience during the race.
With no shade along the route, runners cover themselves with long sleeved shirts and sun hats. However, one of the most important things for racers to protect themselves against is dehydration. Racers take on water from the support teams every few hours. They often weigh themselves throughout the race to judge how much water they have lost while racing. Many runners, who travel to the event from all over the world, try to lighten the strain by dressing in fancy dress One man was pictured at the event dressed in a tutu while another could be seen in a funny hat and shorts. However, the clothing worn by the runners show just how careful they have to be, with sun stroke and dehydration a very real possibility. Runners wear caps to protect themselves from the blazing sun, while others cover up in trousers. Others have teams with them, providing muchneeded water and encouragement. One thing which cannot be in any doubt is the very real bravery of some of the runners, highlighted by Britain’s Chris Moon, 51, who despite wearing a prosthetic leg took part in the race. He lost his right arm and leg in an explosion

while supervising mine clearance in Mozambique in 1995. He has completed the race before, becoming the first amputee ever to attempt the race. Speaking last year, Mr Moon, who was born in Wiltshire, but lives in Strathaven in Lanarkshire, said: “I want to challenge the concept of limitation. I want to overcome physical challenges and show that I have not been weakened by the unfortunate things that sometimes happen. I run further now than I ever did before I was blown up. I have worked very hard and I want to keep going until I am in my 70’s. I am driven by all sorts of things. What is life without aspirations?’
Tenerife Weekly - 19th July 2013 - 25th July 2013
Many competitors wear head lamps to help with visibility as the sun sets. The race takes place in July of every year and up to 100 athletes including runners, triathletes, adventure racers, and mountaineers take part. This years was the 36th event, with organisers saying it is the ‘most demanding and extreme running race offered anywhere on the planet’. The start line is at Badwater, Death Valley, which is 85m below sea level - the lowest elevation in the Western Hemisphere. The course covers three mountain ranges, covering a 3,962m vertical ascent and the race ends at the Mount Whitney Portals at nearly 2,530m.

Monster Robot Wars Special!!!
Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the… wind???
Hollywood scriptwriter and co-creator of “Lost” Damon Lindelof tweeted: “I am going to write the Sharknado sequel and I am going to do it before Sharknado is over.” The Syfy channel have made quite a name for themselves-good or bad it’s hard to saywith their monster mash up movies, normally about a hybrid of 2 deadly creatures, like man-eating versions of those ‘80s soft toys “The Wuzzles”, remember Bumblelion and Butterbear? They usually have awful effects and even worse acting but are so bad they’re brilliant!! Anyway here some of the best titles to look out for, I won’t bother you with the plot-there usually isn’t one! • Dinocroc vs Supergator • Mansquito • Pirahnaconda • Sharktopus Ps. Note to Editor-after extensive research I can absolutely guarantee - there are NO Sharktopuses? Sharktopi? in Canarian waters! Well thank goodness for that - Ed
Last week the debut of the syfy channel’s latest monster mash-up had tweeters going nuts! Do you find “Snakes on a Plane” a touch too cerebral? Is “Sharktopus” far too realistic for your tastes? Then you need to watch “Sharknado” the terrifying TV movie in which a freak weather system scoops up entire schools of man-eating sharks and dumps them in downtown L.A where they proceed to munch through a bunch of celebrity has-beens and ex sit-com actors! Sounds awesome!! On the night of its East coast debut last Thursday, #Sharknado was one of the top trending topics on Twitter-not bad for a previously unheard of TV movie, even celebs were getting in on it, actress and Woody Allen’s exmissus, Mia Farrow simply Tweeted “omg omg OMG #Sharknado!” Star Trek-the Next Generation star Wil Wheaton said: “You fools! You foolish fools! We should have taken global warming seriously and now there’s a SHARKNADO!”

Monsters University
Well that’s exactly what you will get if you go to watch Guillermo del Toro’s summer blockbuster-out this week! “Pacific Rim” is the “ “Hellboy” and “Pans Labyrinth” director’s love letter to the Japanese Kaiju movies he was raised on during his childhood in Mexico. Kaiju -literally meaning “strange beast”, is a term used to describe the immensely popular genre of Japanese giant monster movies - including the most famous Kaiju of all, Gojira or as we call him, Godzillabut don’t go expecting men in rubber costumes stamping on
cardboard cities- this is serious technology bringing his boyhood fantasies to life. In the movie, set in the near future, a portal at the bottom of the Pacific ocean opens, letting through vast inter-dimensional creatures that have ravaged our cities. Mankind fights back by creating huge robots or “Jaegers” piloted by 3 humans, to tackle the enormous beasts: “Pacific Rim is all about scale, but I also wanted it to be something unique-looking that stood out from any other movie put out in the summer, or any other season,” says del Toro. “It has a peculiar look: very oversaturated, very graphic, very operatic, and very rich. I wanted to make a movie for a young audience, yet all the elements are very sophisticated. I didn’t want to make a comic book movie that felt like a eulogy. I wanted to make it fun, not a downer. I wanted to make a movie I would have loved to see when I was a
kid.” “The idea is that the Kaiju are living weapons unfurled by a race that basically sends them like a cleaning tool to other planets to get rid of the vermin,” del Toro says. “Because one Kaiju is going to be a crustacean, another one is going to be shark like, another will be a flying Kaiju, I wanted a design element that showed some commonality between all of them.” From the bright blue blood, he said, “you get a sense that they were coming from the same sort of mind designed to be a living machine of destruction.” Pre-release buzz for the movie has been as huge and impressive as his awesome creatures-this looks to be one of the biggest hits of this year, not a remake, sequel or reboot but an original tale-albeit one that’s a loving homage to one man’s childhood dreams. Pacific Rim was released in the UK last Friday.

Ok its title may mislead some people to believe it’s the kind of film usually found on the “grown up’s shelf”, but “Pacific Rim” is sexy in a totally different way. Would you like to see a movie about skyscraper-sized, city stomping inter-dimensional monsters? How about 300 foot tall robots controlled by sexy human pilots? Ok what about said monsters and fore-mentioned robots kicking 7 shades of “you know what” out of each other?
No monster special would be complete without news about the king of Kaiju, Godzilla!
Last seen in 1998 in the critically mauled and 1st Hollywood version of Big G, Godzilla is once again heading for our cinema screens in the Western Hemisphere’s 2nd attempt at doing justice to the Japanese icon and it’s going back to its roots as a “terrifying force of nature”. Director Gareth Edwards who got the gig straight off the back of his brilliant low-budget directorial debut “Monsters”, had this to say; “We’re just going to take it really seriously. I’ve wanted to see this movie this way all my life. Imagine if this really happened – as crazy as it sounds –
what would it really be like?” Not much is known about the plot except the story will focus on the plight of one soldier, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and will feature 2 other monsters as well as the titular beast. Although little has been revealed about his appearance, visitors at San Diego’s Comic-Con got a teasing first glimpse of Godzilla, in the form of a mural on the side of a building, painted to look like a single red eye peeking through a hole in the wall! Well that’s it for this week-all this talk of monsters has left me with a giant appetitetime for a bag of monster-munch and a can of monster!!

The broadcaster alan Whicker has died at the age of 87 after suffering from bronchial pneumonia. The presenter and reporter - whose career spanned almost 60 years - passed away in the early hours of Friday, according to his spokeswoman.
Whicker, who was probably best known for his Whicker’s World TV series, died at home in Jersey. The star - who had been with partner Valerie Kleeman for more than 40 years - regularly, presented his most famous series, Whicker’s World, for a little over three decades. The documentary programmes famously brought a glimpse of the exotic jetset lifestyles of the rich and famous into UK homes. In 2009, he returned to some of the locations and people who featured over the years for a BBC series, Alan Whicker’s Journey Of A Lifetime. His distinctive voice and delivery led to him regularly being parodied by, among others, the Monty Python team, and a jokey rap delivered Whicker-style, called Wikka Wrap, even made the top 20 in 1981. He even entered a Whicker sound-a-like contest and but only managed to finish in third place. Egypt-born Whicker had been a war correspondent and, during his own service in the Second Word War, he was among the first group of Allied forces to enter Milan and he filmed footage of the body of Mussolini. Whicker was awarded a CBE for his services to broadcasting eight years ago, he moved to the UK as a child.
He went on to become a captain in the Devonshire Regiment, and was in the Army Film and Photo Unit in Italy in 1943. After the war, as a news journalist he was a correspondent in the Korean War, during which he was mistakenly reported to have been killed, but in a telegraph to reassure people he was still alive he wrote: “Unkilled. Uninjured. Onpressing”. After joining the BBC in 1957 he became a reporter for the Tonight programme and within a couple of years
he had launched Whicker’s World, a hugely popular programme which continued until 1990. In the show he interviewed the rich, glamorous and powerful as he presented viewers with a glimpse into the lives of figures such as Joan Collins, Peter Sellers, the Sultan of Brunei and the Haitian president Papa Doc Duvalier. Whicker was honoured with the Richard Dimbleby Award at the Baftas in 1978 for his contribution to broadcasting.

SharpLeS in SeSSiOn By John Sharples
bonny baby Competition
OF all the petty minded, idiotic, politically correct nonsense that we see these days, the latest idea to ban a “Bonny Baby” competition in devizes in Wiltshire takes the biscuit!
The crackpot committee have stated that they feel it is unfair to judge babies on their looks. Well, in reality, it is unfair to judge anyone on their looks, but we all do it, every single day of our lives. A bonniest baby competition is a bit of innocuous fun and the mothers of the town are up in arms about the competition’s cancellation and the
local mayor is on their side. He has organised his own contest called “The Mayor’s Baby Show” in protest. We really must get away from all this PC nonsense. Miss World doesn’t degrade women any more than Mr Universe degrades men. They are a bit of fun
that many people enjoy. By the time the next generation is having kids the whole of Britain will have been sterilized of anything that resembles a bit of fun. The British quirkiness will have been legislated out of existence and Carry On Films will be banned along with cartoons like Tom and Jerry because they are either sexist or violent. Someone, PLEASE get a bloody grip and stop this nonsense. They are killing the British way of life and stealing the one thing that we can be proud of, our great British sense of humour!
Saint John Paul
i am a little bemused. There is no doubt that John paul was a great pope. he stayed with the job to the very end despite his terrible ill health. he was loved by millions and millions of Catholics worldwide.
I am surprised that he hasn’t already been given sainthood. What surprises me is that they have just realised that he performed a
miracle almost ten years ago. Amazing! Surely the miracle was sufficiently miraculous to recognise at the time instead of years later. I do think that the guidelines need to be changed. After all, what about that wonderful woman who gave the miracle of love to so many needy and poor people? Mother Theresa has done far more for real people that those in higher positions of authority in the church. She should never be forgotten.
Packet-In moving moment
The drum parade of Lee rigby was a sad and moving moment. Like many others, i stopped what i was doing to observe a silence. i can’t help feeling that every soldier who dies in action or otherwise should be treated in the same way. They give everything for their country.
Our national pride in these people is there, we just don’t seem to be given enough opportunity to show how we feel.
The secret delivery of the deceased via a back route is an appalling state of affairs and the Prime Minister needs to get his backside moving to change this system. There will always be demonstrators but there will always be those who care and want to show their support. Meanwhile, another young man, in the prime of life has been killed, this time by a stupid coward who felt that his actions were something worth bragging about. How sickening. How sad!
There can’t possibly be a single man, woman or child that thinks smoking is good for them. everyone is aware of the dangers of smoking and yet the government is now considering a change in the packaging of cigarettes, so that they are sold in a plain cover.
has said that the PM is stalling on the issue. There was a debate this
week. On the Labour side of the house there were, at one point, EIGHT MP’s. I suppose that the rest of them had popped outside for a fag! How can they criticise the government when they don’t show any interest in the issue.
They have delayed the action to take a look at the effects it has on Australian smokers as the plan has already been put into place over there. Good thinking Mr Cameron. Meanwhile Ed Milliband
Step back In Time
The typewriter could be making a bit of a comeback. since edward snowden has revealed that the united states has been spying and collecting information on all of us, the KGB department in charge of protecting Vladimir putin and his cabinet has placed an order for 20 typewriters. They obviously don’t want all their documents to appear on a computer database. Not only that, but vinyl
records are really making a comeback. Many of today’s hit songs are available as singles or albums. Just last week, I went to see the musical show “Grease” in Santa Cruz and one of the souvenirs on sale was a cast recording of the show on an LP. There seems to be something special about listening to a record. A CD has such a clinical sound, almost as though it has been over produced. Any little crackles that we hear on a record have been lovingly put there over time. All a CD does is skip and
stick. I wonder what the next big old thing will be. One thing that will disappear soon is the compact camera. As smart phones improve, people won’t need cameras at all. Then, in a few years’ time, they will probably make a comeback too! What goes around, comes around!

maLaLa yousafzai, the pakistani schoolgirl who was shot in the head by the Taliban marked her 16th birthday by addressing the united nations in new york. she is urging the world to give every child an education.
Her remarkable recovery has seen her become a high profile campaigner with her face being recognised all over the world. Three million people have already signed a petition which Malala will present to UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon. Ahead of her first major public speech the teenager said: “This is an opportunity for every young person on the planet to get together and tell the world: ‘We will get our education, be it at home, in school or any place’.” The schoolgirl was shot by the Taliban in 2012 while on her way to school in Swat Valley. She was transferred to Birmingham in the UK and underwent extensive surgery to rebuild her skull at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Young people from 80 different countries arrived in New York to hear Malala’s speech and to support her cause. gardening and Nature By Steve Andrews - aka Green Bard
Menta Poleo
One of the first things I noticed about Tenerife when I visited the island back in 2002 was the wonderful range of herbs that could be found growing here both in gardens and in the wild. Many of them are very aromatic.
An endemic plant with a strong smell of mint is actually not a mint at all but in Spanish it is known as “Menta poleo.” Botanists know this useful medicinal herb as Bystropogon origanifolius but in English it is Canary Island mint. It is common in some places on mountain slopes and dry ground and produces loads of tiny whitish flowers. If crushed lightly the whole plant smells strongly of mint. It can be used to make a herbal tea that is not only pleasant to drink but is a treatment for coughs, colds and stomach ache. Hung in bunches over doorways it is said to repel flies. Incienso or Canary wormwood (Artemesia canariensis) is a grayish green shrub that reaches 1 m

in height and produces lots of tiny yellow button-shaped flowers. It is common on waste ground and abandoned farmland in the lower areas of the island. The plant is very aromatic and its Spanish name is very apt because it does smell a bit like incense. Canary wormwood can be made into an infusion and is considered a remedy for digestive problems and an appetite stimulant. Used to stuff herb pillows it is a treatment for insomnia and as a tea it helps fight depression. As its name suggests it can be used to expel internal worms and is also an insecticide. Canary wormwood contains thujone which is an ingredient in absinthe and that helps give the drink its “kick.” In hot weather the smell of Canary wormwood will often per-
Uses for Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus has very many uses and various species are grown in many parts of the world.
• It can be used as an inhalant made from putting the leaves in boiling water and then inhaling the steam. This is a way of treating congestion from colds and flu. • Eucalyptus oil has antiseptic properties and in Chinese medicine is considered a traditional remedy for tuberculosis. It is used in cough drops,
some sweets and in decongestants. It also has insectrepellant properties. • Eucalyptus wood is pulped to make paper. The wood is traditionally used in the making of the Australian musical instrument known as a didgeridoo. • Eucalyptus honey has a distinctive flavour and has proved popular. • Eucalyptus trees are planted as windbreaks and to help stop soil erosion. • Eucalyptus leaves are the main food that koalas eat.
fume the air around it. Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a very common herb found along roadsides, on waste ground and along paths. It grows to 2 m or more and bears feathery leaves and umbels of yellow flowers that ripen into seeds that change from green to brown. The whole plant smells and tastes like aniseed. Known in Spanish as “Hinojo,” the seeds are often used to make a pleasant herbal tea and in fact you can buy them in tea-bags in many supermarkets. Fennel is used as a tonic to stimulate the digestion and the immune system. It has antiseptic and antiviral properties, as well as helping to keep the blood pressure down. Chewing the seeds are said to be a remedy for travel sickness.
Canary Islands Lavender
Balm of Gilead The leaves can be used raw in salads or as a garnish or cooked as a sauce for oily fish dishes. The seeds are very spicy and are excellent in curries. Balm of Gilead (Cedronella canariensis) has a most wonderful perfume when the herb is lightly crushed. It grows in many places along pathways in evergreen laurel forests and can become quite a large plant that will form big clumps of straggling stems that bear its very aromatic foliage and its pale pinkish-purple flowers. The smell is a bit like camphor, a bit like eucalyptus and with the zest of lemons mixed in there too and is one of the best herbal scents I can think of. A tea made from the leaves and flower-heads has been used as a remedy for colds, flu and
congestion. It is also considered as a herb that has antidepressant properties and I would say that just the incredible perfume alone is enough to lift the spirits! Canary lavender (Lavandula canariensis) has pretty lilac-purple flower spikes like its more famous garden cousin but doesn’t have the strong perfume of the better known varieties of lavender. It is a common wild flower though and is often seen growing on dry rocky ground in coastal areas. It has its uses in herbal medicine due to its relaxant, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and anti-parasitic properties. Taken as an infusion it is taken to treat stomach aches, to expel internal parasites and to bring down a fever. Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) isn’t a Canary Islands wild plant but is frequently seen in gardens and parks. It forms large bushes of aromatic evergreen leaves and bluish flowers. Rosemary has lots of medicinal uses and is a treatment for headaches and migraines, as well as being an antidepressant with stimulant properties. It has been considered to be a good herb for helping to improve the memory and also as a hair tonic. It is usually taken as an infusion of the leaves. Rosemary finds it place in the kitchen too where it is a popular herb for flavouring savoury dishes, with cooked meat and in soups and stews. Tasmanian blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus) is an Australian evergreen tree that is often grown on Tenerife. It is good for coughs, colds and bronchitis but I am happy just to inhale the wonderful smell from its leaves and seed-pods!

Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.
He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

Head teachers will be responsible for improving take up. That could include some schools in England stopping pupils bringing in food from home, cutting the price of cooked dinners or making children stay on-site at break time. The changes follow a year-long review aimed at ensuring pupils eat healthier lunches. An estimated 20% of children are already obese when they leave primary school. Currently 57% either bring in packed lunches or buy something from outside school costing parents around £1bn a year. The Government said these meals often contain too many sweets, fizzy drinks and fatty foods and the money would be better spent on healthy school lunches. Announcing the plans, Education Secretary Michael Gove said: “What I’d like to see is a greater take up of school food. As a result of this; more children eating school lunches and fewer having packed lunches, more children being healthier and more energetic through-
out the day, and the nation, as a result, benefiting from improved brain power.” Cooking classes will also be compulsory for all under-14s. Critics are concerned this interferes with decisions which should be made by parents and could make extra work for already overstretched teachers. The review also called for free meals to be extended to all primary schools, starting in the most deprived areas of England. The move would mean almost three million extra youngsters eating free lunches. The Government has agreed to look into the proposal, and it is understood that Mr Gove is broadly in favour of the plan. Linda Cregan of the Children’s Food Trust said: “At a time when so many families on low incomes are struggling with the costs of food, we look forward to progress on the commitments to look at extending free school meals to more children and the call for universal free school meals in all primary schools.”

Pugh’s tips/tricks:
Why use bacon? Swap it for a light Cajun, southern fried seasoning, or even garlic salt? Why not wrap thin strips of bacon around larger chips?

F1 legend Fangio’s Car bentley Celebrate The Fetches record £19.6m 60th anniversary Of The Queen’s Coronation
The mercedes in which Juan manuel Fangio clinched the 1954 F1 championship has become the most expensive racing car in history.
A classic Formula 1 Mercedes-Benz has become the most expensive car to be sold at public auction after fetching more than £19m. The 1954 MercedesBenz W196 was the racing car driven by five-times F1 world champion Juan Manuel Fangio when he clinched the second of his titles in 1954. The Argentine drove the 2.5-litre car to victories in the 1954 German and Swiss Grand Prix races, the first successive

triumphs achieved by the Mercedes-Benz team in its post-war comeback. The single-seater was auctioned by Bonhams at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Chichester, West Sussex. The previous world re-
cord for the most expensive car sold at public auction was a 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa which went for more than £10m in California in 2011. The Mercedes was sold over the telephone to an undisclosed bidder.
Fiat X1/9
FirsT seen as a design concept in 1972, the X1/9 was rapidly developed into the latest in a very long line of small, open Fiats. styled by the italian designer marcello Gandini, of Bertone, it looked like a miniature Lamborghini. if you’re not instantly familiar with the designer’s name, run a quick Google image search and marvel in some of the all-time greats such as the Lamborghini Countach and miura, Lancia stratos... and the Citroën BX.
Wedgy and edgy, the X1/9’s sharp suit clothed a state-of-the-art technical package. It was designed to use the Fiat 128’s drivetrain in a radical way - moving the power pack and suspension assembly from the front of the 128 to the rear of the X1/9 resulted in a supercar-apeing, mid-engined layout and near-perfect weight distribution. At the time of its launch, this was pretty radical stuff. The pop-up headlamps and a targa top
may have suggested performance, but the original production version’s 1,300cc alloyheaded engine was overwhelmed by the weight of the massively strong body shell. All too soon, the pretty X1/9 became known as a car for shallow poseurs - those more concerned with how their car looked, not how it went. And that was a shame, because the X1/9 was (and remains) a driver’s tool par excellence. Steering is full of feel and direct like a go-kart - good news, because the nervous handling demanded an alert hand at the helm to keep it all in check, especially in the wet. Most buyers don’t recognise the X1/9 as a razor-sharp Seventies wedge enjoying shared DNA with Lamborghini - what they actually see is a pair of breeze-block bumpers top-and-tailing a whole lot of trouble. They then go off and buy MGs or Triumphs. More fool them, we say - because they’re wrong to write off the X1/9. We like the way that so few people fail to embrace the X1/9 - it can just be our little secret. You can see it not only as a baby Lamborghini, but also as a thinking man’s Midget.
Bentley’s luxurious flagship sedan, the award-winning Mulsanne, will be joined by the world’s fastest four-seat, open-top car the 323-kph Continental GT Speed Convertible. The iconic R-Type Continental that was at its pinnacle during the original coronation celebrations will also be on display. Richard Charlesworth, Bentley’s director of royal and VIP relations said “the opportunity to build, and now support, the state limousine is a great source of pride for everyone at Bentley and many of our customers. It is perhaps one of the most recognized and photographed cars in the world.” Bentley Motors employs approximately
four thousand people in Crewe, which is home to all its operations, including design, R& D, engineering and production. The combination of fine craftsmanship, using skills that have been handed down through generations, alongside engineering expertise and cutting-edge technology is a unique example of high-value British manufacturing. Bentley’s exhibition area will allow visitors to take a rare glimpse inside the company’s headquarters in Cheshire, where some of the world’s best luxury cars are created using a unique combination of traditional hand craftsmanship skills and leading-edge automotive production processes.

Julia Bradbury, dr phil hammond and phil Tufnell host the first of two shows to be shown tonight, raising awareness of three of Britain’s biggest preventable conditions – Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and liver disease - which affect an estimated 11 million people a year. In May this year, the show organised the UK’s biggest ever combined health screening at Rugby League’s Magic Weekend in Manchester. Almost 400 locals and sports fans were screened to see if they were at risk from one of these three ‘silent’ killers. A team of three GPs, 50 NHS volunteer nurses, with the aid of leading charities Diabetes UK, HEART UK – The Cholesterol
Charity and the British Liver Trust, helped to give advice about how to reduce the risk of developing these chronic conditions. Some well-known TV personalities were also screened a few weeks ahead of the main event in Manchester. Long Live Britain follows the progress of former Eastender Ricky Grover, singer Jodie Prenger and actress Crissy Rock as they undergo a number of medical tests. Dr Phil Hammond helps Ricky to understand what his liver has to do to process fatty food, shows Jodie what happens if the body can’t absorb sugar from the blood stream, and teaches Crissy about good and bad cholesterol. And as the three get their test results, some of them are in for some shocking news.

ITV 1 - 20:00 - 21:00 Keepers and vets at London and Whipsnade zoos are doing all they can to encourage their animals to breed and it’s often a complicated business.
At Gorilla Kingdom it involves shipping in a new male silverback, Kumbuka. The boisterous and powerful 15-year-old is brought in to mate with the experienced women in the existing gorilla group - Effe, Zaire and Mujuku. But he’s never seen a female before: “Kumbuka’s actually a virgin,” says gorilla keeper Dan Simmonds, “so he’s got a lot to learn.” His reputation for throwing and breaking things proves well-founded as he starts wreaking havoc upon arrival, causing untold damage in the state-of-the-art night quarters and trying to de-

stroy the wooden structures on the island. Within weeks, though, a love story unfolds between him and flirty female Mujuku. “It’s a privilege to watch a bond like this occurring in real time,” says Dan. Eventually their courtship leads to a mating, much to the delight of the primate keepers. Dan explains: “Nothing will beat the addition of a baby to a human family. It’s exactly the same with gorillas. It changes the gorillas’ lives.” Elsewhere on the primate section keeper Andrea Payne takes her favourite white naped mangabey monkey for a health check before the arrival of some new potential mates for him. “I’ve seen - this is going to make me sound mad - nearly every mangabey monkey in Europe in captivity and Lucky is the most handsome.”

FiVe top athletes, including asafa powell, have tested positive for banned performance-enhancing drugs, according to Jamaica’s anti-doping authority. herb elliott, chairman of the Jamaican anti-doping Commission (JadCO), confirmed the body had received “reports of adverse analytical findings from ‘a’ samples.”
“The process of the result management has commenced in accordance with the JADCO anti-doping rules. We cannot disclose any further information until the athletes have responded to notification of the ‘A’ sample.” Sprinter Asafa Powell was revealed to be one of the athletes after his management company confirmed he had failed a drugs test. Olympic relay silver medallist Sherone Simpson also admitted she had tested positive for a stimulant after last month’s national championship. 30-year-old Powell has won gold medals in the 4x100m relay at the Olympics and World Championships and is a former world record holder. In a statement, Powell said: “I can confirm that a sample I gave at the national trials in June last year this year has returned ‘adverse findings’. The substance oxilofrine (methylsynephrine) was found, which is considered by the authorities to be a banned stimulant. I want to be clear in saying to my family, friends, and most of all my fans worldwide that I have never knowingly or wilfully taken any supplements or substances
that break any rules. I am not now - nor have I ever been - a cheat.” Simpson, 28, was a member of the Jamaica team that came second in the 4x100m relay at London 2012. In a statement, she said: “This is a very difficult time for me. I was notified on July 14, 2013, that my urine sample taken at the National Senior Championship, June 21, 2013, after the 100m finals returned a positive analytical finding for a stimulant, oxilofrine (methylsynephrine). As an athlete, I know I am responsible for whatever goes into my body. I would not intentionally take an illegal substance of any form into my system.” Last month, Jamaica’s most successful female athlete Veronica Campbell-Brown tested positive for a diuretic, which can be used to mask the use of performanceenhancing drugs. The twice Olympic 200 metres champion has been suspended by the Jamaican Athletics Administrative Association pending the outcome of a disciplinary panel hearing. The revelations come as Tyson Gay, former double sprint world champion, announced on Sunday that he had tested positive for a substance he could not identify and was withdrawing from next month’s world championships in Moscow. The American, who had the year’s fastest 100 metre time of 9.75 seconds, said he was notified by the US AntiDoping Agency on Friday that his A sample from an out-of-competition test on May 16 had returned a positive. He said: “I don’t have a sabotage story. I don’t have lies ... I basically put my trust in someone and I was let down. I made a mistake.”

marquez Wins motorcyclist dies during German motoGP 300mph record attempt mOTOrCyCLe racer Bill Warner, died trying to top 300mph, after he lost control and careered off a runway at a former air base in northern maine. The 44-year-old, from Wimauma, Florida, reached 285mph before losing control.
spanish rookie marc marquez earned his second win of the season with victory at the German motoGp at sachsenring last sunday to go top of the championship standings.
The 20-year-old hit the lead early and went on to claim victory with Britain’s Cal Crutchlow second and six-times world champion Valentino Rossi third. Marquez, in his first MotoGP campaign, was following up his Grand
Prix of the Americas victory in Texas in April. He has now finished on the podium in all seven races he has finished in 2013, his retirement at the Italian MotoGP the only blot on his landscape. Marquez’s victory allowed him to overtake fellow Spaniard and Honda teammate DaniPedrosa, who was forced out after fracturing his collarbone in Saturday’s practice session, to go top of the world standings with 138 points, two points clear of Pedrosa.
It is unclear exactly how fast he was travelling when his bike veered off the paved runway and crashed, said Tim Kelly, race director of the Loring Timing Association, which hosted the event at Loring Air Force Base. Warner was conscious and talking after the crash just before 10am, but he died just over an hour later at a hospital in Caribou. “No one will touch Bill’s achievements or be the type of racer he was. He was a personal friend and the land-racing community is less for his loss,” Mr Kelly said. Riding his modified turbocharged Suzuki Hayabusa, Warner previously hit 311mph on the same 1.5-mile course in 2011 - the accepted world land speed record for a conventional motorcycle. This time he was trying to reach 300mph in just one mile. He had made several passes before the
one in which he crashed. The Maine Event is an annual timed speed event that utilises the 14,200ft-long runway at the former Strategic Air Command base that closed in 1994. The Loring Timing Association uses 2.5 miles of the runway for its events, with an additional safety buffer of 2,000ft.
Around 400 spectators watched as Bill Warner began veering right after passing the mile mark, then travelling upright for another 2,000ft before exiting the runway and crashing. The remainder of the event was cancelled. The Limestone Police Department and Maine State Police are investigating the crash.

BBC Gets FA Cup Back BBC Sport have regained the TV rights for the FA Cup. The BBC lost the contract in 2008, but will start showing the competition from the start of the 2014-15 season.
Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker tweeted: ‘Delighted to announce that the oldest, most famous and loved domestic cup competition in the world, the FA Cup is back on the BBC.’ The BBC will share the FA Cup contract with BT Sport while ITV will continue as rights holders for England matches until 2018, showing all internationals home and away. The FA Cup, which has lost so much of its lustre in recent years, received a TV rights boost that will help restore the standing of the tournament. The FA’s flagship competition was a big beneficiary of the TV sports war between Sky and BT, with football content the main battlefield. Both subscription networks registered interest in the next FA Cup contract from 2014-15, as did the two main terrestrial channels, ITV and BBC. The big four football channels made separate offers in the first round but the second round saw offers compatible with a partnership, with the FA looking for a mixture of free-to-air and subscription coverage. The latest deal adds to BT’s already impressive line-up of live football, in-
It is alleged that Ecclestone bribed Gribkowsky, who was in charge of managing German bank BayernLB’s sale of a 48% stake in a Formula One holding company to CVC Capital Partners. Ecclestone was allegedly keen to see the private equity investor brought in as a new shareholder.
cluding the Premier League, FA Cup, Europa League, SPL, Bundesliga, MLS and Football Conference. BT have also snapped up the rights to AVIVA Premiership rugby, UFC, WTA tennis and MotoGP. Sky, who have retained the rights to 116 live fixtures during the course of the season, have been ruthless in their choice of games during the first-half of next season, begining with four games involving three new managers in Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City, as well as Tottenham on the opening weekend. BT Sport, meanwhile, will open with Liverpool v Stoke City at lunchtime on Saturday, August 17.
Sky have exercised their right to first refusal in the first rounds of the season. They also say they will screen every meeting between last year’s top four. BT have to wait until September 28 for their first game between Premier League heavyweights when Spurs play Chelsea. They will show 38 matches throughout the season and all their fixtures are currently at 12.45pm on Saturdays. By then, Sky will have already broadcast Man United v Chelsea on August 26, a Super Sunday involving Liverpool v Man United and Arsenal v Tottenham on September 1, Everton v Chelsea on September 14 and Man City v Man United on September 22.
Gavin Henson Punched Unconscious
Premiership rugby club Bath are investigating reports that new signing Gavin Henson was punched by a team-mate in the Pig & Fiddle pub. A video shows Wales international Henson apparently unconscious on the floor.
The Aviva Premiership club said in a statement: “Bath Rugby can confirm there was a minor incident in the city centre ... involving a few members of the playing squad. The club are investigating the matter as a priority and will only make a statement when further information is available.” Avon & Somerset Police

received a call reporting “aggressive behaviour” that night, but while the caller was on the line the group left the pub and so officers did not attend. As a result no offences are being investigated. The Pig & Fiddle declined to comment on the matter, while Henson’s representatives could not be contacted. Bath is 31-year-old Hen-
son’s fifth club in the space of two years as he tries to revive a career that promised much in the past. The fly-half or centre won two Grand Slams, but has not represented his country since winning the last of his 33 caps in 2011. The player was the former partner of singer Charlotte Church and is the father of her two children.
During Gribkowsky’s trial Ecclestone told the Munich state court he felt pressured into paying the cash because he was worried the banker would make unfounded allegations about his tax affairs to Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs. In addition to taking the money from Ecclestone, prosecutors maintained during the trial that Gribkowsky used BayernLB’s funds to pay the F1 chief a commission of $41.1m and agreed to pay a further $25m to Bambino Trust, Ecclestone’s family trust.
Ecclestone told the court that he had deserved a commission for the sale, saying “I did a very, very good job.” Gribkowsky, who largely admitted to the charges, was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison after being found guilty last year of corruption, tax evasion and breach of trust. Ecclestone remains central to the motor racing business he built into a global moneyspinner and has always said he has no plans to retire. There is no obvious successor in place, although CVC’s ambition of floating Formula One’s parent company on the Singapore Stock Exchange will partly depend on the case being resolved.
strengthen FC Bayern.” A graduate of Barca’s youth academy, Thiago was seen as a possible successor to Xavi in central midfield but news reports said he was frustrated at a lack of playing time and he attracted the attention of several of Europe’s wealthiest clubs. His brilliant captain’s performance in the European Under-21 championship final, when he netted a hattrick in Spain’s 4-2 win over Italy, boosted his profile and he was named player of the
tournament by UEFA. Born in Bari, Italy, he is the son of former Brazil midfielder Mazinho, who played in the 1994 World Cup-winning side, and has a younger brother Rafinha, also a midfielder, in the Barca B team. Thiago made 15 starts in La Liga as Barca won the title last season, two appearances in the Champions League and seven in the King’s Cup. He has also played three times for the senior Spain side but missed out on a place at the Confederations Cup.
Thiago Alcantara Signs For Bayern
European champions Bayern Munich have agreed to buy soughtafter Spain Under-21 international Thiago Alcantara from Barcelona for a fee of 25 million euros.
Thiago, 22, who will rejoin former Barca coach Pep Guardiola in Munich, will have a medical in the next few days before signing a four-year contract, Bayern announced on their website.. Barca also confirmed the deal, which it said included a friendly between the two clubs sometime in the next four years. Bayern said 5 million euros of the transfer fee would come partly from income from the match and partly from Thiago agreeing to forego some wages: “Thiago Alcantara was the great wish of our new coach Pep Guardiola,” Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said. “We are delighted that we have been able to seal this great transfer,” added the former Bayern and Germany player. He is a fantastic player with great promise who will

net Gains For los Cristianos Sport aLL you need is plenty of enthusiasm and skill to put on a top sporting tournament at Los Cristianos beach. On any afternoon you can find keen beach volleyball players sharpening up their skills over the nets but last week arona council and the Tenerife Volleyball Federation built a temporary collection of two training courts and a show court complete with bleacher seats for a three day youth tournament.
Starting on Friday 16 pairs of male and female contestants started a knock out tournament under the blazing sun. Holiday makers flocked to enjoy the free show and to admire the athletic display of talent, it didn’t matter if you weren’t totally clued up on the rules, the excitement was infectious. Between their games players grabbed whatever shade they could and water was
downed by the liter although a certain soft fizzy drink towered over the court in inflatable bottle form. By Sunday afternoon the semi finals had taken shape and the competition really hotted up, blistering serving and top team work among the pairs narrowed the field down. The ladies final saw Mery and Natali put up a gallant fight but they eventually had to give second best to Melani and Veronica in the lemon coloured bibs. There was just a short gap to hose down the sand for extra grip before the men’s final took center stage. Sergio and Albi from Puerto de la Cruz did their best to take the honours but local players Hugo and Alejandro in the red vests had too much power for them and emerged as winners. The action moves on this weekend to Gran Canaria where the Canarian championships will be putting the top players to the test. Meanwhile at Los Cristianos beach the aspiring future stars and fun players will be putting in plenty of hours to raise their game.

CD Marino V CD Tenerife To Break The Football Drought
R
ejoice rejoice football is back and what better way to greet it’s return than with a local derby friendly between CD Marino and CD Tenerife in the Estadio Olympico, Playa de Las Americas at 8.30pm on Wednesday 24 July.
The teams had mixed seasons in the Segunda Division (Spains third tier) with CD Tenerife winning promotion and CD Marino being relegated but a new season brings new hope and anything is possible. Both teams have some new players to show off,
CD Marino v CD Tenerife last season
Marino have added defender Lamine from Ibarra, midfielder Nabil and defender Roberto Carlos from Atletico Granadilla and some of their talented reserve and youth players will be beating on the new coach Sosa Espinel’s door for a chance to wear the blue shirt. There has been a complete top to toe change of management at CD Marino, this season will be a chance to welcome back old supporters that drifted away and to encourage new fans to get behind their senior team in the south. The opening friendly is 10 euros with under 18’s and handicapped free.
CD Tenerife Canvas Nearly Full And Ready For Kick Off
It sounds like the ideal place for honeymoon couples and lovers but Hotel Romantica in Barlovento, La Palma is the traditional launch pad for each new season for CD Tenerife. Their sports complex provides the perfect place to sweat off those excess sum-
mer kilos and blend new arrivals into the squad ahead of the pre season games. Before their eight day spell of island hopping, CD Tenerife showed off the new kits at TEA – Tenerife Espacio de Las Artes, just down the road from the Heliodoro stadium in Santa Cruz. The club has a new supplier this term, Danish company Hummel and they have fine tuned the

team shirts and training kit so the squad looked worthy of the gallery they graced for the official launch. The shirts will sell for 68 euros and can be bought in the south at Soy Del Tete in CC Fanabe Plaza. The latest new face to join the squad is 21 year old midfielder Kike Rivero from Racing Santander and negotiations are still ongoing with several more additions.
Tenerife has a new world champion after Jonay Risco powered his way to the K1 crown in the Santa Cruz Pabellon Deportes last Saturday night.
The local kick boxer got a unanimous decision from the judges after a powerful demolition of his opponent from Portugal Arnaldo Silva.
The fight went the distance but Jonay was always out in front, his only worrying moments came when Silva unleashed a late barrage of blows in the final round but it was never going to be enough to swing the judges. It was the highlight of the night on a busy bill and will propel Jonay to center stage in the 72 kg division.
