“Watch your speed” is good general advice, of course, but it is particularly necessary over the coming week because Tráfico is carrying out a campaign to highlight the role speed plays in accidents and in deaths on the roads. The campaign, being carried out in conjunction with local police, will be targeted at information … and control. There’ll be checkpoints and patrols, so watch your speed. Those who have been fined for illegal letting and who have neither appealed nor paid may already have had letters from Rita Hernández, the Turismo minister responsible for inspections and fines, setting out the fine recovery procedures. Some will not have received anything, however, and anyone in this group needs to check urgently if they have been ordered to Turismo for the procedures to be explained in person. The appearance must be made between 9am and 2pm, Monday to Friday, in Turismo’s offices in Santa Cruz on the 1st floor, number 35 Avenida de Anaga/Francisco La Roche. Sra Hernández says that failure to appear, or failure of those who’ve received letters to reply, will result in the Government proceeding unilaterally to full legal effect to recover the fines. A Ryanair aircraft flight had to return to Tenerife due to mechanical problems. Reina Sofia Airport was on yellow alert for over an hour, but emergency services were not required. The plane left at 6.20 am for Billung in Denmark, but had to turn back minutes later due to a malfunction. The plane finally landed again at Tenerife at 10 past 8 without any problems, after having burnt off some fuel. The plane finally took off again for Denmark just after 10am. According to figures released by the Institute of Tourism Studies (IET) under the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, a total of 2.5 million passengers came to the Canary Islands using “low Cost flights from January until the end of July 2013, down by just 0.5% in comparison to the same period in 2012. Nationally, the low cost airlines accounted for more than half of the air traffic between January and July 2013 with a 54.3% share, compared to the traditional airlines. The UK and German markets led the numbers traveling via low cost airlines, with 33.1% and 18.8% respectively, passengers who chose this method of transport. The British market increased by 4.2% , with over 6.5 million passengers, and Germany rose by 9.2% with a total of 3.7 million passengers. Emergency services received a report on Sunday evening that what appeared to be a body was floating in the sea off the Arico coast. A search and rescue helicopter was dispatched shortly before 9pm and did indeed find the body of a woman near Porís de Abona. At present the cause of death is unknown, and relevant legal and forensic enquiries are already underway to establish what happened. The total number of foreign residents registered at the Social Security offices in the Canary Islands at the end of July 2013 was 74,701 people. This is an increase of 0.96% compared to June 2013 but a decrease of 2,561 contributors (-3.3%) compared with the month of July last 2012 according to data released by the Ministry of Employment. The statement shows that the of the total foreign Social Security affiliates, 39,030 are from countries outside the European Union, and the rest, 35,671 people from EU countries. Of the total number of 74,701 immigrants to register at the Social Security offices, 16,149 registered as ‘self-employed’ and the rest as ‘employed’. Those within the ‘employed’ status, a total of 23,439 foreigners (40.35%), work in the hospitality sector, 15.9% (9,235 affiliates) work in commerce and 7.69% (4,467 contributors) work in administrative activities.

William Trubridge is an achiever, an achiever with depth! The world champion and double world record holding freediver from New Zealand is currently in Adeje on his fourth training visit, and co-hosted a press conference at the La Caleta Adeje Aquatic School with Adeje mayor Jose Rodriguez Rodriguez Fraga, sports councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera and representatives from T3 Tenerife Top Training. Trubridge used the excellent facilities at the Tenerife Top Training centre and was full of praise for the facility as well as Adeje itself, adding his support to the idea that the borough could host a world championship event within two years in the freediving discipline. Freediving is the ability to dive to depths and surface on just one breath without the use of apparatus. Trubridge said that at a recent world event in Serbia the weather was so changeable that the pool temperature dropped by over 20 degrees overnight making conditions for athlete’s really difficult, underling the fact that the excellent reliable climate here is a real plus. The attraction of Adeje as a sporting hub was also stressed by the mayor, saying that sports played a dual role in the borough. Sport, he said, promotes a healthier lifestyle for our residents, as well as promoting a more integrated society, but it also has become a vital element in the tourist offer. The fact that a world class athlete such as William Trubridge was opting to return to Adeje for

regular training was a huge plus. Tenerife Top Training has become one of the top training centres for athletes in many disciplines, from premier league football and rugby teams to individual champions, and is a number one choice for winter training among many European clubs. For swimmers the pool facilities are excellent, and the ‘no chlorine’ waterlight filtration system is appreciated. But the facility is also used by and is open to local residents and tourists – pop in and

see for yourself. The Apnea Academey West Europe in La Caleta is also offering a number of free classes to Adeje residents. On Saturdays they take children from 4-12 years of age for a two-hour swimming session (be at the centre by 11.30am on the morning, the class is from 12 – 2pm), and on Wednesdays and Fridays host free breathing and relaxation classes in the centre from 11.30 – 12.30. But worry not, these classes are held on dry land!

To celebrate we decided to do something I’ve not done in the 13 years I’ve been here; book a hotel in the North and go out to eat in Puerto de la Cruz followed by a few drinks in town! I’ve been, as regular readers know, all over the North of the island, including our capital and I’ve enjoyed the atmosphere of the Carnival in Santa Cruz many times, but even though that was in the evening, for some reason I’d never stayed up there. Anyway, we decided to resolve this and a few weeks back my wife (cos she’s far better at these things than me) booked us into the Blue Sea Interpalace, all inclusive for one night. You won’t believe the bargains you can get if you look on the right websites, I’ve been ordered not to share with you the one we used in case it puts the prices up but trust me, if you look you can find some truly astonishing deals!! So, with the hotel booked and waiting for us, we set off on Tuesday morning, taking yet another scenic route (I’m amazed at how many incredible different routes you can take to the North, we’re still finding new ones to enjoy). This time we chose to go through Chirche, take a right past Guia de Isora, then follow signs through Chirche. Once you’ve driven through this beautiful village, you’ll find the viewing point and restaurante, Mirador Chirche, the views are absolutely breath-taking and the food is said to be excellent.

One Night In Puerto (And The World’s Your Oyster)! Testing the water in an all-inclusive hotel!

We wandered all over the city streets just enjoying being there I couldn’t seem to find a restaurant I wanted to go to but that’s more likely due to pizza overdose than a lack of choice! Eventually we came across a place called the Pequeña Buda bar and naturally with our love of all things

After a refreshing drink it was easy to get on the road to El Teide, it’s again a superb drive if anyone is wondering where all the people are this year, they’re up there I’ve never seen the national park so busy. We arrived at the hotel at about 1.30pm, it was really easy to find and check-in was a breeze, so we dumped our bags in our basic, but very nice room and down to the dining hall armed with our all-inclusive wrist bands! The buffet lunch was quite extensive with something for everybody, although we were only there for one day, and I’d imagine it wouldn’t change much day to day, so it could be repetitive by the end of your holiday. Full and a bit tired we decided to check the pool out and the pool bar!! It’s a help yourself concept with bottles of local spirits and various drinks dispensers pumping out everything

from tea, coffee, soft drinks, wine, beer and ready mixed cocktails (although the Caipirinha I sampled tasted nothing like the ones I’ve had anywhere else). We found a place to set our towels down, that was when my nose picked up the scent of freshly made pizza (I’m like a ninja turtle with those things), of course it was impossible to resist - you could just help yourself!!! So, now with a belly full of buffet lunch and free pizza we had a lovely relaxed afternoon around the pool (the pool was fine although I have to say the photographer who took the shots for their website was extremely skilled!!) So, back to the hotel room for a quick shower then we were off to explore the restaurants and nightlife that Puerto has to offer! Only a 10 minute walk from the Lido in Puerto de la Cruz, we were

After walking through a long narrow bar we were surprised when it led us out into a vast inner city chill out garden, complete with many plants, Buddha statues and homemade furniture constructed from pallets! They specialised in exotic beers and had a huge list to choose fromafter trying a cherry beer we noticed a list of chupitos for only a euro a shot!! Some of the names were amazing (in Spanish and all hilarious, I won’t translate all of “pis

de pitufo” for you but it’s blue and pitufo means smurf!) after trying a SpongeBob square pants, a horny cow and how could I leave without sampling a Jedi, I was starting to feel hungry again so we jumped into a cab and asked him to take us to a street with restaurants near our hotel. We decided on Restaurante Zebra a great little place kitted out with anything to do with you guessed it zebras!! The food was excellent and very reasonable (believe it or not, I had the seafood pizza), we had such a great time and it was such value for money, we’ve already booked for next month in a different hotel for the anniversary of our wedding blessing. So, trust me, try it out, get a great deal online and go, for the price of a night out you can stay in a hotel and be pampered just don’t ask me where we booked I’m not allowed to tell you!

As with many farming communities the harvest festival is an important event and the people of Tejina have a rather unusual way of celebrating it.

Foreign Office Launches Campaign To Combat Excessive Holiday Drinking New statistics show peer pressure and cheap drinks can lead to more than a holiday hangover

In a new campaign under the banner “On holiday, don’t let drink do your talking”, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office is encouraging young holidaymakers to think before and while they drink to avoid putting themselves at risk of serious harm. Expats are being asked to share this important message with visiting friends and family to help ensure they spend their time enjoying their holidays, not in hospital, jail or worse.

New research shows that around half (51%) of 16-24 year olds say they are likely to drink more on holiday than at home. Almost two thirds (62%) attributed this to alcohol being cheaper. Peer pressure is also a major factor, with 40% of those surveyed saying they had felt pressure from friends to drink more than they wanted to.* Consular staff in Spain have already been called on this summer to come to the aid of British nationals who find themselves in trouble after drinking to excess. Will Middleton, Consular Regional Director for Spain said: “Going on holiday is a great opportunity to relax and have fun with family and friends, and enjoying a drink can be part of that. We’re not telling people to stop drinking but we do want people to be aware of the consequences

of drinking to excess – and our research shows almost half of young people understand them already. “Laws and customs regarding alcohol vary from country to country, for example with lower limits for drink driving in Spain and “free-pour” rather than specific measures, which makes it harder to control how much you are drinking. It’s important to find out about local laws, including on alcohol consumption, to avoid a night in a police cell or even a criminal record. “Drinking can impair judgement. Alfie Brown died of natural causes, aged 14 months, during the family holiday last year. His mother, Miss Ballantine, 19 said: ‘It was completely sudden. I put him to bed the night before and found him the next morning.’ She told the inquest at Smethwick Council House that Alfie had been playing by the pool ‘all day’. Miss Ballantine, who is pregnant again, described Alfie’s development as ‘completely normal’, saying that he had passed medical check-ups ‘with flying colours.’ A consultant perinatal pathologist at Birmingham Women’s Hospital carried out a post mortem into Alfie’s death on January 10. Dr Phillip Cox said that his death had been caused by bronchitis with bronchial pneumonia: ‘It appears to have come on very quickly, but was widespread,” he said. “We didn’t manage to find out what the organism causing the infection was.’ Dr Cox dismissed an exotic foreign virus as the likely cause, suggesting that Alfie’s death had been the result of a ‘nasty virus infection’ which originated in the UK. He added that the child had ‘more likely’ died as the result of a bacterial infection. Black Country coroner Robin Balmain, said: ‘There is nothing unnatural about his death. It’s terribly distressing, I understand that, but it’s not unnatural. I am really sorry that this has happened to you. I can’t imagine what a shock it was to you.’

Tenerife tourism continues to develop its policy of corporate social responsibility. This will include bus travel tickets for Añaza children who are in economic difficulties and do not have a children’s centre in their neighbourhood. This action will enable them to attend centres in other areas.

Starting in September, and set to continue for a further year, children will be looked after in SOS Children’s villages, during which mothers may have time to attend training courses and look for jobs. Continuing collaboration with disadvantaged families in Añaza, Tenerife Tourism has launched a project aimed at collecting donations from the staff

of Tenerife Tourism. Money raised will go to deal with emergency payments, the purchase of food or other basic needs that the poorest families will be able to afford. At the same time, in a repeat of last year’s effort, the Red Cross has launched the “Vuelta al cole solidaria”. To help with this campaign, two Tourism of Tenerife offices will have collection boxes installed where the public can make donations, the proceeds of which will go to help families unable to afford to buy school materials.. A Food Bank will be opened in November for what they are calling a “La gran recogida”. Tenerife tourism will be offering help that goes beyond just giving them food supplies, they will be recruiting volunteers to collect and distribute food, toys and clothing for families in distress.

Over 2,800 Bars Closed In The Canary Islands

The economic crisis has taken its toll on the leisure industry in the Canary Islands.

In the last four years a total of 2,869 bars have closed down, 16.7% of all registered establishments. In 2008 the archipelago had 17,159 bars that figure drops to 14,290 in 2012, according to yearly economic data produced by La Caixa. During the last year, 712 bars have closed in the Islands. The Canaries rate of closure is higher than the national average. Over the whole of Spain, the crisis has forced 45,491 bars to close down, which means that between 2008 (314,598) and 2012 (269 107) there are 14.5% fewer bars in the whole country. The fall in consumption is, in the main, due to the high unemployment, 33.69%, in the islands: “The purchasing power of consumers has dropped and not just for the unemployed, but in society in general because even those working are afraid to spend because the general trend is to save,” said Francisco Perez, sector president in the Chamber of Commerce of Gran Canaria. Perez said that in the past two years, just in Gran Canaria, 1,500 bars have closed their door and another 1,500 are pending closure. The sales tax increase this year has also led to bad results in the sector. Since July last year anyone in the ca-

tering business has to face paying IGIC at 7% instead of 2%. In Perez’s view, the key to improving the situation is that “since we have fewer customers, what the government should do is lower Canarian sales taxes” he says. Other costs such as electricity or special tax, as levied on alcoholic beverages have also increased and are borne by the entrepreneurs themselves. Comprehensive health checks and constant police presence are also a problem. Perez also believes we require the adoption of more flexible policies and standards. “We live on tourism and yet, there are areas in which the hours are restricted and at midnight the terraces have to be closed and brought in. I do not understand how you want to promote

What certainly has become essential to keep afloat the bar sector is the professionalism of those who manage and work in it. You may retain it in Spain indefinitely so long as you maintain its home country tax fully paid up, including a current MOT as required. However you may not stay in Spain any longer than six months in any one calendar year & neither you nor anyone else can use it during the following six months in Spain. Your car must also be insured in its country of registration under EU Law. This can give you problems with insurance. Some companies will offer cover but please read the small print. The Green Card system currently covers 44 countries and is managed by the Motor Insurers Bureau. GENERAL RULES FOR PARKING - Yellow Lines mean “No parking”, many ig-

EASyJET has launched a new route from Newcastle to Tenerife that will start on November 6th and operate weekly on Wednesday and Saturdays.

The economic Vice-President of the Cabildo and island Councillor of tourism, Carlos Alonso, emphasizes that “this new flight joins those already connecting the island with the United Kingdom, not only from Newcastle but in other cities of the country, which will provide greater air capacity for our commuter market, with almost 1.6 million tourists coming to Tenerife in 2012”. So far in 2013, Easyjet has brought over 12,000 tourists to Tenerife from the UK, an increase over 6% on last year. The airline currently operates other routes in Bristol, Edinburgh, London-Gatwick, and Manchester. Of these locations, London Gatwick provides almost nearly 50% of the total. Eight companies operate flights between Tenerife and the UK. In a list headed by Ryanair, Thomson Airways and Thomas Cook, Monarch, British Airways and Jet2.com, EasyJet comes in at number 5 for the largest number of tourists brought to the Island. British tourists coming to the island has a family income average of around 56,000 euros, higher by more than 5,000 euros compared to other nations who earn around 51.676 euros. Around 54.2% choose to book their holidays independently while 44.8% choose a tourist package.

Strange Creatures Call From The Sea In The Canary Islands By Steve Andrews

One very large pool gets people swimming in it at times but I prefer to feed the fish that live there so I take a little bag of stale bread with me and I scatter it on the water. There is always a large shoal of young Grey Mullet and they flash their silvery sides as they rush to grab a mouthful and make the water seemingly boil.

Blennies Blennies are slower in their approach and there are more here than I have ever seen in the UK. Some of the types you find in Britain also live in crevices in the rocks and are left out of water when the tide goes down. Blennies are the nearest thing you have to Mudskippers, those strange little fish that are found in tropical mangrove swamps. Just like them some types of blenny are able to live

Damselfish This particular pool that I like has had a Canary Damselfish too, which I am sure was a male in his best courting colours of an exotic blue. I had been hoping to get a picture but each time I had my camera the water was too rippled by the wind

or it was a calm day and I had forgotten it. I used to see damselfish in marine tropical fish tanks back over in Britain but here you can see them in their natural environment. Puffer fish with their inflatable bodies and googly eyes live here as well but I have yet to spot one of these strange little fish.

Sea Urchins Black spiny sea urchins are easily found, and sometimes there are lots of them clambering about over the algae-covered rocks. These strange creatures are related to starfish and they have tiny tube feet to help move them about. Sea urchins have no brain but only a primitive nervous system. Having said that they certainly do well enough without and one species is said to live up to 200 years. On one occasion I got chatting to a man there who was interested in seeing all the fish coming to be fed. I gave him some spare crumbs so he could feed them too. He told me his doctor had told him that exposing his feet to the seawater would do them good. I told him that whilst this might well be the case to be careful where he was stepping just in case he put his foot on a sea urchin. There are often hermit crabs moving about on the bottom of the pool too although at first they look like winkles or other types of seashell. These amazing little crustaceans live inside empty shells that they can retreat up into for protection.

Damselfish fence by making the water hard to see through as well as surprising a would-be predator and squid and cuttlefish use the same method. The Sea Hare grazes on algae that grow on the rocks. One very conspicuous type is the green and flimsy looking Sea Lettuce and this type of seaweed is edible by people too if washed and cooked. Another plant, which is compared with this salad vegetable is the Canary Samphire, which in Spanish is known as Lechuga de Mar (Lettuce

Something else I have been excited to sea on the cliffs and seafront is the amazing Hummingbird Hawk Moth, which hovers like the bird it is named after as it feeds and flies in bright sunlight. It’s a moth that couldn’t decide if it wanted to be a bird or a butterfly!

tf2/tf1 improvements delayed until 2014 THE proposed improvements to the TF2/TF1 motorway connection at Santa Maria del Mar near the Carrefour outof-town Shopping centre, has been put back by at least a year.

The junction is prone to tail backs throughout the year. The improvement project was devised in response to local demand more than 10 years ago, above all for road safety reasons to avoid the sudden lane changes which are currently in effect at the junction. Although budgeted for with Regional and Island funds, the Tenerife Cabildo coughed up

their part but the Canarian Government did not. The original plan was for the Canarian Government to excavate the hillside to create a new lane at the junction and the Tenerife Cabildo would undertake building the necessary flyover. As Canarian Government funds have not been forthcoming, Tenerife Cabildo Councillor for Highways, José Luis Delgado, has told the Spanish press that at the next Cabildo meeting his department will propose they modify the applied credit, about 400,000 euros, in order to invest this money in a different project. The road link will now be put back until at least 2014.

We have paid off the debt. Thank you all so much for your continued help and support. Just over a year ago Live Arico’s new committee inherited debts amounting to 18,222 Euros. It was morally correct to pay the vets and feed suppliers that helped Live Arico when they were struggling financially. They are hero’s in our eyes, who continued to support Live Arico out of care and concern for the animals, and we are happy and relieved to have fully paid back the debt that the previous association had built up over the years. We are confident that now the association operates under a more professionally run system, we can go forward and help many more animals. THE Ayuntamiento of Arona has launched a green scheme to enable households to dispose of their generated waste and where separation from other waste is convenient and advantageous. The waste will be collected by mobile “ecopints”. The project will complement the Island and municipal waste management services, and become a helpful service to citizens. VINEyARdS in the archipelago are the first to be harvested in Spain, and this year they are forecasting a large crop. Five of the six big wine producers predict bigger volumes than in 2012.

Together, Canary Island vineyards are reportedly predicting a crop of about six million kilos, up by a third from last year and the bumper wine grape harvest is luring some workers from the unemployment queues to the vineyards. With un-employment in the islands at over 30% there are few other job prospects on the horizon. Domingo Martin Cruz, head of Bodegas Marba vineyard based in Tejina, Tenerife, said some locals were taking places normally filled by immigrants during the harvest: “This year there are already fewer immigrants in the fields. Mainland News In Brief According to local media reports, a 39-year-old woman went into labour shortly after take-off on a flight bound for Italy, causing the flight to be diverted to Barcelona, where the baby boy was born just before landing. The mother and baby were taken to Barcelona’s Sant Joan de Deu hospital in Barcelona and were reported to be in good health. Royal Air Maroc did not disclose the mother’s nationality, it is understood that crew members and a midwife, who happened to be on the plane, helped with the delivery of the baby that arrived several weeks before its due date. The flight continued on to Bologna about 50 minutes after landing in Barcelona.

Police in Spain and several Latin American countries joined forces in an operation against the possession and distribution of child pornography that led to more than 100 arrests. Police in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Ecuador, Uruguay and Venezuela all took part in the operation coordinated by Interpol. In the first phase of the operation, security forces made 87 searches in the eight Latin American countries and in Spain, taking into custody and charging 78 suspects. The second phase took place in Argentina, Costa Rica and Spain, with 22 searches that led to an equal number of people being arrested and accused. The investigations were launched by a special unit of the Chilean police acting against the distribution and possession of child-pornography material over a known file-sharing network. Besides 14 arrests, authorities in Spain searched 19 homes, seizing more than 100 hard drives, a score of Memory Sticks and almost 1,000 DVDs with child-porn files. Investigators estimate there could be several thousand files of paedophilic content. El Corte Ingles has won breathing space after securing a deal to refinance nearly three-quarters of its existing debt. The chain, Spain’s largest privately-held firm, said its lenders have agreed to refinance 3.8bn Euros of its 5bn Euros debt. The new loans will now mature in 2021. El Corte Ingles has been hurt hard by the crisis in Spain and falling sales, and has been forced to cut prices to compete better with competitors.. The group assets worth 7.4bn Euros and annual revenues of around 15bn Euros, and the group said this would help it persuade other banks to refinance the remainder of its debt. Seven people were rescued after their yacht sank off the Mediterranean coast of Spain. The alarm was raised when the yacht Indigo, registered in the Channel Islands, started taking on water about 60 miles off the coast. Falmouth Coastguard, which coordinated the search, said both a Spanish coastguard lifeboat and helicopter were launched. He said three people were rescued from the sea and the rest from a life raft. The spokesman said all were reported to be safe and well and were flown to Girona, in the north east of Spain. The Ministry of Public Works has opened the bidding for a 1.1 million euro contract to conduct a feasibility study into a proposed coastal rail link between Valencia and Alicante. Although a new line would need to be constructed between Alicante and Gandia, some sections of the new route would only require upgrades to the existing infrastructure. The study will also consider options for a 48 kilometre branch line from Alicante to Torrevieja, where there is currently no rail connection. Before the project can be given the go ahead, the feasibility study must first establish whether there is adequate demand for the route and what the potential profitability of the new line could be. The proposed route would look to link up coastal towns between the two cities, which would include the seaside resort of Benidorm.

Zara Founder Dies On Holiday

The co-founder of fashion chain Zara, Rosalia Mera, one of the richest women in the world, has died after suffering a stroke on holiday.

Ms Mera, 69, fell ill while on holiday in Menorca with her daughter Sandra. She was transferred to the private San Rafael hospital in Coruna, northern Spain, where she died a hospital source said. She was the highest-placed among Spanish women and was also described as the richest self-made woman in the world, listed by Forbes this year as the world’s 195th richest billionaire with a fortune of £3.9bn. Ms Mera left school at the age of 11 and started work as a seamstress at 13 before going on to found the Inditex textile giant alongside her husband Amancio Ortega. They were originally going to call the store Zorba after the “Zorba the Greek” movie, but there was a bar with that name just steps away from the site, so the letters on the Zorba sign were rearranged to spell out Zara. The store specialized in low-priced versions of more expensive popular clothes, and the formula turned into a success for store openings across Spain and then internationally. The pair later divorced but Mera retained 5.1% of Inditex, which includes international clothing retailer Zara. Ms Mera gained recognition by voicing opposition to changes in Spain’s abortion laws and to government cutbacks in name of austerity affecting Spain’s cherished education and national health care programs. Mera was also an active philanthropist. Ms Mera had left the Inditex board in 2004 but kept a 5.05% stake in the firm, according to Spanish news reports. Her venture capital firm,

Thousands Queue For Film Casting

ut of work Spaniards have been queuing up in their thousands for a chance to be an extra in Ridley Scott’s upcoming biblical epic, “Exodus”, as castings are held in Almería, southern Spain.

One of the casting organizers, Nerea Herrero said: “Half of Almería and half of Spain has come.” Scott is been looking for around 3,000-4,000 extras for the new biblical epic and is currently casting is for slaves who will appear in the film. Criteria covers people whose skin is dark, who

must look either of African or of Arab origin, with beards, and they must,obviously, be thin. “We are looking for very, very thin people, even if it is a bit over the top, because we need people who look like slaves and they were starving,” said Herrero. According to Herrero, over the last few days around 10,000 people have attended a casting call in Almeria, and another 5,000 in the nearby town of Pechina. Crowds have come from as far north as Galicia and the Basque Country in the hope of getting on to

the big screen and making a few euros: “We did not expect so many people but we’re glad we had this good response because we need a lot of people.” Final casting was held last Friday, with around 3,000 people turning up, some arriving early in the morning to guarantee a good place in the queue. Successful applicants will be happy to hear that shooting is expected to start in mid-October and Scott finds the surrounding countryside of Almería to be perfect for the epic.

British MEP War Ship Abused On Twitter Visits Gibraltar

Conservative MEP, Julie Girling, who represents Gibraltar in Brussels, received a barrage of online abuse after defending Gibraltar against mounting Spanish aggression. She was branded a ‘Nazi’ and ‘too ugly to visit Spain’ on Twitter after speaking out against border delays between Gibraltar and Spain. The defiant politician insists she will ‘not be bullied’ into silence.

Mrs Girling triggered the furious response after suggesting British families boycott Spain when planning their holidays. Tensions have mounted in recent weeks in a dispute over Spanish fisherman accessing Gibraltar waters, which have seen Madrid impose lengthy border checks which have caused huge queues. The Royal Gibraltar Police said drivers have had to queue for hours to enter Gibraltar, although there were no delays leaving. Some motorists said they were kept waiting for as long as five hours. Neither will I.’ David Cameron is poised to make a decision on whether to sue Spain in the European Court of Justice over its imposition of draconian border controls. A task force, including the aircraft carrier Illustrious and two frigates, set sail from Portsmouth last week for a long-planned exercise in the Mediterranean. The frigate HMS Westminster is due to dock in Gibraltar shortly along with two support vessels.

Fabian Picardo, Gibraltar’s chief minister has reportedly received death threats and been targeted by Spanish internet trolls, wrote on Twitter: “Big thank you also to Royal Navy, Gib Defence Police, HM Customs and Port Authority for their deployment too. Cool, professional and calm!” He said “hell will freeze over” before Gibraltar removes the concrete reef and accused Spain of behaving like North Korea. Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy says he will take all legal measures to defend his country’s interests.

Prime Minister David Cameron has raised the dispute with European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso. He said the checks - which have seen huge delays at the border in recent weeks - were “politically motivated and disproportionate” and therefore contrary to the EU right of free movement. The row has set relations between Spain and the territory back 40 years, according to Edward Macquisten, chief executive of the Gibraltar Chamber of Commerce. He said it was also having an impact on Gibraltar’s high season tourist trade, which usually sees hordes of British visitors from Spanish resorts. Spain ceded sovereignty of Gibraltar to Britain in 1713, but has persistently sought to regain the tiny enclave.

UNE Burns, 66, and her friend Susan Jones booked a dream package holiday to Portugal arrived at her hotel only to find she’d been taken to Spain instead!

Didn’t you like the hotel?” And I keep saying the hotel was fine but I wasn’t in Portugal. If I sit in a seat and ask a holiday company to book me a holiday to the Algarve I expect to end up in the right country.’ Since her return, Mrs Burns has been twice to the Trafford Centre store to complain and made three calls to customer services. A spokeswoman for Thomas Cook UK & Ireland said: ‘We know how important holidays are for our customers, and would like to apologise for any misunderstanding that may have occurred when Mrs Burns booked her holiday with us. ‘While Mrs Burns did not query her holiday confirmation documents prior to travel, whereupon we could have amended her booking, we can confirm that we are speaking to her with a view to resolving this matter to her satisfaction.’ Mrs Burns’ holiday confirmation document says they are going to ‘Costa de la Luz, Algarve’. Some travel agents do refer to Costa de la Luz as ‘the Spanish Algarve’ - but Punta Umbria Beach Hotel is not in the Algarve. On Thomas Cook’s website it comes under the heading of Spain with no mention of the word ‘Algarve’.

Thomas Cook flew the ladies Portugal’s Faro Airport and then put them on a bus and driving for 100 miles over the border to Spain’s Costa de la Luz. Mrs Burns, booked the break at the Thomas Cook store at Manchester’s Trafford Centre: ‘I used to work for a cruise operator so I’ve been to most of Europe but had never been to Portugal so I was really keen to go.’ The tour operator told Mrs Burns they’d found her a seven-day trip to the Algarve the southernmost point of mainland Portugal. With her holiday “safely” booked, she packed her head full of what she would be able to see when she got there. However, after the flight to Faro Airport the trip took an unexpected turn. June said: ‘During the journey, people were commenting that there were Spanish road signs but we just dismissed it. Then we arrived at the hotel and it really began to dawn on us that it wasn’t Portugal. ‘I went up to the rep and said “Where are we?” And she said “Spain, is there a problem?” And I said, “Yes, I should be in the Algarve”. She just said it would be difficult to move us because there might not be a free hotel and that we’d definitely enjoy it here.’ With no other option, Mrs Burns and her two companions went ahead with the holiday at the Punta Umbria Beach hotel, near Huelva: ‘The food was good and clean but we

Bonkers Of Benidorm - Brits Declare Independence From Spain

Another major European crisis has erupted in Spain as thousands of British ex-pats living in the Marbella region declared independence from Madrid, pledging their allegiance to the British crown, and asserting their historical right to self-determination as part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the Costa del Sol.

The official declaration was made at the Benny Hill Bar in Benidorm, as patriotic Brits defended their right to march through Spain wearing Union Jack shorts and singing ‘Agadoo’ and the theme from ‘The Great Escape’. Spanish police had banned the symbolic British late night conga following last year’s riots when British loyalists infuriated Spanish citizens by going ‘Oi Manuel, this; Basil, this; slap on head!’ The British community living have always kept themselves separate from the rest of the

Why should they have to pay in Euros and have road signs in kilometres? Student Stranded In Ryanair Duty Free Row

Guy Horne was left stranded at a Spanish airport when he says he was stopped at a Ryanair departure gate by staff and told he would have to make a £60 payment so he could carry his bag of duty-free shopping on board.

Drug Pair Charged Two women arrested on suspicion of trying to smuggle cocaine worth £1.5m out of Peru have been formally charged, prosecutors have said.

The 22-year-old student was flying home to Manchester from Malaga in Spain had no money to cover the fee and says he was unable to fit the carrier bag inside his carry-on luggage. He offered to leave his shopping behind, a bottle of whisky for his dad’s birthday, but was then told by the airline’s handling manager that the gate was closing and he could not get on board. Guy, from Hale, says another family on the same flight offered to take his carrier bag on board, but the manager refused to let them. He says his bag only weighed about 5kg – well below Ryanair’s baggage limit. But it was too full to fit in the extra bottle. He was left behind in Spain and had to wait for over 12 hours for another flight with

a different airline, costing his family hundreds of pounds. Guy, who was trying to get home in order to prepare for two final university degree exams, said: “I was left stranded. I didn’t have any money. I even showed her my empty wallet. She could see I was distressed. I was hyperventilating. She just decided she was not going to let me on the plane and was going to leave me in another country.” He said: “I just want people to be aware that this can happen to anyone. Young people and the elderly can just be left behind like this and they don’t seem to care.” Ryanair made headlines recently after increasing the price for putting luggage in the hold of its planes by 66% over the summer period. Chief executive Michael O’Leary said at the time he

intended to increase baggage charges until no-one took hold luggage on to the airline’s flights. Passengers are allowed to carry a single bag of up to 10kg hand-luggage for free. It says duty-free shopping bags cannot be carried separately. Ryanair spokesman Robin Kiely said: “All Ryanair passengers agree to our generous 10kg cabin bag policy at the time of booking and any passenger who attempts to board with a second bag, and fails to fit that second bag within their one carry-on bag, has the option of either leaving that bag behind or checking it in upon payment of our check-in bag fee.” He added: “Ryanair will not delay its flights for passengers who fail to comply with its terms and conditions of travel.”

Michaella McCollum Connolly and Melissa Reid, both 20, were moved to a detention centre in Lima after appearing before the District Prosecutor on Tuesday. The women face a maximum prison sentence of 15 years if convicted, the prosecutor’s office in Callao added.

McCollum Connolly and Reid were detained in Lima last week, accused of trying to smuggle millions of pounds worth of cocaine into Europe. The two women have protested their innocence, saying they were recruited by a gang in Madrid and forced to carry items in their luggage at gunpoint. Peruvian officials say the women were en route to Madrid and Majorca on August 6 when airport officials discovered almost 12kgs (26lbs) of cocaine hidden inside food packages in their

luggage. The cocaine was said to have a street value of some £1.3m. They will eventually be taken to the high security women’s prison Ancon 2, north of Lima. Commenting on the women’s current condition in custody, Peter Madden, the lawyer for McCollum Connolly said: “They’re both in a holding cell, there are two other women there, but they haven’t gotten anything to eat today. They haven’t been offered any food and to me that is unacceptable. The conditions inside the holding cells are pretty grim. “They are expected to lie almost on the floor, there is a sort of sponge-type bed which is just not acceptable, there are no blankets, it’s not clean, and the most important thing is that they haven’t actually been offered any food today, and it didn’t look as if they were going to be.”

The two pictures from the new Cambridge family album were taken by a very proud grandfather in the back garden of the Middleton family home in Bucklebury, Kensington Palace confirmed. Taken in “early August”, the first photograph’s show a simple parents and child shot. The couple, back-lit by the sun, are standing in the gardens of the Berkshire home with Kate cradling her two-

week-old son. In the second, William and Kate can be seen sitting on a rug, also in the garden. Kate is still holding Prince George, but they are this time joined by their cocker spaniel, Lupo, and the Middletons’ retriever, Tilly. The two photos were apparently selected from a larger collection taken while the Duke of Cambridge was on paternity leave. For their official engagement and wedding photographs, the Royal couple opted for well-known celebrity photographers Mario Testino and Hugo Bernand. untouched Vintage Cars up for auction

HUNdREdS of vintage Chevrolets are to go to auction at a Nebraska dealership, some of which have just one mile on the clock. Collectors from around the world are expected to bid on about 500 cars and pick-ups owned by the former Lambrecht Chevrolet Company in Pierce, a small town in north eastern Nebraska.

The collection was compiled by Ray Lambrecht, who opened his dealership in 1946 and ran it for 50 years. He held onto unsold vehicles and trade-ins as a nest egg. Unlike most dealers who lowered prices to move out-of-date stock, he assumed, correctly, the older cars would appreciate over time. Ray, 95, and his wife, Mildred, 92, retired in 1996. They still live in town, but their health has declined. They decided to sell the collection so others could enjoy

them. The two-day auction, scheduled for September 28 and 29 will feature mostly unsold Chevrolets that have sat untouched for decades. They will be sold as-seen. About 50 have fewer than 20 miles on the odometer, some are so rare that no one has established a price. Some still have the manufacturers’ plastic on the seats. The most valuable, including a rare 1958 Chevy Cameo pickup, could fetch six-figure bids from collectors who

view them as works of art to display or as restoration projects. Auctioneer Yvette VanDerBrink says she has already received calls about the auction from as far as Iceland, Singapore and Brazil: “To find this many new, old vehicles is unheard of,” she said. The most valuable vehicles were stored at a nearby warehouse, until a heavy snow collapsed the roof. Some were damaged, but many were saved and moved elsewhere. The models at the

dealership are among the best preserved, despite the building giving way to bats and holes in the roof. The rest of the less valuable cars sat under trees at a nearby farm the Lambrechts owned, in the company of trade-in vehicles they did not want to resell. Although they are less well-preserved, they could still prove to be a big

draw for vintage car fans. “This kind of stuff is absolutely the rarest of the rare,” said Mark Gessler, president of the Historic Vehicle Association. “You can see plenty of cars that have been restored. We want to ensure that we’re celebrating the original craftsmanship, the original technique,” he said. “It’s a touchstone of our past.”

Obama’s New Addition

Barack Obama and his family have a new addition at the White House, a new dog called Sunny. The black Portuguese Water Dog joins the First Family’s as sister to Bo.

“Sunny is the perfect little sister for Bo - full of energy and very affectionate - and the First Family picked her name because it fits her cheerful personality,” said a post on the White House blog. Bo joined the Obamas shortly after they moved into the White House in 2009, in keeping with a promise the President had made to his daughters the night he was elected in November 2008. But Bo, a male, was a little lonely, according to the post penned by Michelle Obama’s spokeswoman Hannah August. “So now, in addition to helping with those official duties, Bo takes on the important role of big brother!” said the blog. The White House announcement was accompanied by photos and a video set to music - of the roughly one-yearold canine frolicking on the South Lawn

of the White House with her new furry companion. When Bo joined the First Family, the Obamas explained that they picked a

Portuguese Water Dog because their younger daughter, 12-year-old Sasha, suffers from allergies and fur from this breed rarely causes reactions.

Beatles Mastermind Bernstein Dies

Sid Bernstein, the legendary music promoter who masterminded the Beatles’ historic New York concert at Shea Stadium and booked many of the industry’s top acts, died in his sleep, aged 95, from natural causes in hospital in New York.

For decades Bernstein excelled like few others at being everywhere and knowing

everybody. He worked with Jimi Hendrix, Judy Garland and the Rolling Stones, Duke Ellington and Ray Charles, promoted Dion, Bobby Darin and Chubby Checker, and managed Esy Morales, the Rascals and Ornette Coleman. He was an early backer of Abba, setting up the Swedish group’s first American appearances. Bernstein was behind one of the first rock benefit shows, the 1970 ‘Winter

Festival for Peace’ at Madison Square Garden, which featured Hendrix and Peter, Paul and Mary. He also helped revive Tony Bennett’s career with a 1962 show at Carnegie Hall. But reading a British newspaper for a college course in 1963 gave Bernstein the start to his biggest break. The Beatles were just catching on in Britain, and it was “the right time to be reading an English newspaper”, Bernstein explained in a 2001 in-

terview with the music publication NY Rock Confidential. “So here I am reading little stories about this group from Liverpool that is causing a lot of ‘hysteria’. By the end of the course, I was so Beatle-ized by what I read, even though I did not hear a note, I said: ‘Gotta get ‘em’.” Bernstein couldn’t get his agency interested in the group, so he personally tracked down Brian Epstein and convinced the Beatles’ manager that he could line up a gig at New York’s Carnegie Hall. The Beatles were still unknown in the US and the price was cheap - $6,500 (£4,150) for two shows. By February 1964, Beatlemania had crossed over to the States and the band was set to play on The Ed Sullivan Show just three days before the Carnegie concerts. Once the Beatles hit, Bernstein was primed to get the bands that followed. He arranged shows for the Stones, the Animals and other British groups, while saving his biggest dreams for the Beatles. Everything for Bernstein was the latest and the greatest, and in 1965 he landed the group at Shea Stadium, the idea given to him by a ticket manager at Carnegie Hall It was rock’s first major stadium concert and some 55,000 fans lost their voices on an August night as the show broke box-office records.

Corrie Street Actor Sacked Over Rape Rap

Chris Fountain, the Coronation Street actor who sparked controversy after rapping online about rape has been sacked from the show. His contract was terminated due to his “unacceptable comments”, broadcaster ITV said.

The 25-year-old star was suspended from the soap last week after the foul-mouthed Youtube video which included lyrics about rape came to light. Fountain, who played Tommy Duckworth, met programme bosses to discuss his actions and it was announced later he had been sacked. His videos, showing him in his rap persona, The Phantom, featured the star discussing violent themes. The clips have now been removed from the website but featured Fountain wearing a Halloween mask and delivering lines such as “rape a b**** on her birthday”. Last week, Fountain, who

has also starred in Hollyoaks and Dancing On Ice, apologised and spoke of his regret over his actions. He said: “I would like to sincerely apologise for any offence I have caused. I am deeply ashamed by the lyrics and very much regret my behaviour. The videos were made over a year ago when I was experimenting with music and I’ve not done anything like it since and nor will I.” An ITV spokesman said: “Chris Fountain’s contract with ITV has been terminated as a result of the unacceptable comments he made in a number of online clips.” Fountain’s actions were condemned by charities, women’s groups and MPs. Fay Maxted, chief executive of the Survivors Trust - an agency working with over 135 specialist rape, sexual violence and childhood sexual abuse support organisations - said last week: “He is a role model for young people. It almost seems like he’s making a joke of something that really isn’t funny.”

The Beatles played again at Shea in 1966, but turned down $1m from Bernstein to return in 1967 and never worked with him again, although he remained friendly with individual members after their breakup. Obsessed with getting the band back together, he proposed $100m in 1976 for a single concert. John Lennon, in a 1980 Playboy interview, dismissed Bernstein’s offer as “a commercial for Sid Bernstein, written with Jewish schmaltz and show biz and tears, dropping on one knee, like Al Jolson.” Like so many in the music business, Bernstein was the son of Jewish immigrants, born on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, raised in Harlem and hooked on sound and rhythm. He sneaked into the Apollo Theatre as a boy, booked local acts in high school and, while studying

journalism at Columbia University, ran a ballroom in Brooklyn that featured such Latino stars as Morales, Tito Puente and Marcelino Guera. Over the past 20 years, Bernstein’s best client became himself. He wrote two memoirs, It’s Sid Bernstein Calling and Not Just The Beatles, gave frequent talks about his life and even recorded an album of duets. At age 90, he started a Twitter account, sending regards to Ben Stiller and Lenny Kravitz, reporting on his lunch at the 2nd Avenue Deli and catching up with Beatles fans. “Twitterland!” he called out in one post. “Let’s all have a productive week. I have a few very interesting projects in the works and I’ll reveal them very soon.” Bernstein and his wife, Geraldine, were married for more than 40 years. They had six children.

Soldiers Reunited With Their Front Line Pets

An ex-royal marine is helping serving soldiers to bring their “adopted” canine companions home from the front line when they return from Afghanistan.

Pen Farthing was on patrol in the town of Nowzad in 2006 while serving with the Royal Marine Commandos in Afghanistan when his patrol broke up a dog fight. One of the dogs involved attached itself to the soldiers and became their constant companion, providing distraction from the pressures of the front line and helping them to de-stress. “Dog fighting is sadly a national sport here in Afghanistan,” Mr Farthing said. “We broke up that dogfight, not knowing that one of those dogs was going to adopt me. We named him Nowzad after the town we were in and that dog Nowzad befriended me and became my five minutes of just not being in Afghanistan. I would come in off patrol and just pretend I wasn’t there, so after six months I couldn’t bear to leave him behind.” He went on: “Lots of people deal with stress in different ways and I always relate it to people back home and if you have a bad day in the office you might get home and if you’ve got a dog, you look forward to taking him for a walk. So for me down there in Helmand province it was just the same. It was just not being on the frontline for those five or 10 minutes. That’s how I got through it.” With Nowzad rehomed in the UK, Mr Farthing returned to Kabul and founded the country’s only animal

welfare shelter. Together with fellow former British soldier Louise Hastie, he works with a team of Afghan veterinary staff to reunite troops with their dogs in a country where he says dogs are often regarded as dirty and solely associated with diseases such as rabies. The Nowzad animal charity has also recently started to send dogs back to the USA, helping troops suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Ms Hastie said many soldiers suffering from the trauma of war have seen the animals on the front lines and there is “an experience shared with them”. “It’s something both dog and soldier have, familiar territory,” she said. “And often it might be that the dog is the only one which will understand. The dog isn’t going to talk back, it’s going to be there for you regardless of what you say, and it’s a gut feeling of ‘the dog knows what I’m going thorough’.” Even more poignant for Mr Farthing, is the story of British soldier Private Conrad Lewis, who was shot and killed by a Taliban sniper in 2011 just four months into his first tour of duty. Private Lewis, of 4th Battalion The Parachute Regiment, had spent the months before his death writing to his parents, explaining how much a dog was helping him deal with the horrors of battle. His parents were determined to respect their son’s wish to bring Peg home and asked Mr Farthing for his help. “We had no idea where Peg was and it’s not information that’s given out,” said Mr Farthing. “We had to pull in a few favours to find exactly where Conrad’s troops actually were and if they still had the dog.

We mentioned we wanted to get Peg out of Helmand and just over two years ago now we were able to reunite the family with the dog he was always talking about.” Since Mr Farthing started the clinic and shelter three years ago, his charity has helped over 550 soldiers get their animals home and of-

fered treatment to countless more: “Some of these dogs are straight off the street in Kabul, it might be Afghans who’ve brought them to us or it could be westerners who are working here. They’ve seen a dog in distress, so they bring it to us at the Nowzad shelter. The dogs are then vaccinated and neutered and they

come here while we try and find a home for them, maybe with locals or in the West. “Other dogs here are waiting to go to their soldiers, some of these dogs have been found on the frontline, the soldier wants to take the dog home with them so they’ll then bring them to us,” he added.

96 Stone Man “Rescued” From Bedroom

Khalid Mohsin Shaeri, a Saudi man weighing 96st (610kg) had to be airlifted to hospital after being unable to leave his bedroom for two-and-a-half years. The 20-yearold was flown from the southern city of Jazan to a hospital in Riyadh on King Abdullah’s orders.

The “rescue” plan had been postponed for six months until a specially-made bed was delivered from the US. Saudi Arabia’s health ministry worked with civil defence and the Saudi Red Cross to organise his evacuation after part of his home was demolished so he could be brought down from the second floor. A forklift truck was

used to carry Mr Shaeri to an ambulance and on to a waiting aircraft. Minister of Health Dr Abdullah al Rabeeah called the king’s efforts a “humanitarian gesture”. Mr Shaeri, who weighs the same as two baby elephants or eight averagesized men, was reported to have a brother and sister who are also overweight, but able to walk.

Hiding in plain Sight – new mammal discovered

A RACCOON-SIZEd creature with a teddy bear face has been identified as a new species of mammal. The olinguito lives in the mountainous forests of Ecuador and Colombia, where it leaps through the trees at night. Feeding mostly on fruit, it weighs about two pounds (0.9kg) and is about 14in (36cm) long with an equally long tail. The olinguito belongs to a grouping of large creatures that includes dogs, cats and bears.

Ringerl was shipped from zoo to zoo in the US from 1967 to 1976 to try to get it to breed with other olingos – but it never did: “It turns out she wasn’t fussy,” Mr Helgen said. “She wasn’t the right species.” Mr Helgen first realised olinguitos were a different species from olingos when he was looking at pelts and skeletons in a museum. He led a team to South America in 2006: “How is it different? In almost every way that you can look at it,” he said; adding that olinguitos are smaller, have shorter tails, a rounder face, tinier ears and darker bushier fur. “It looks kind of like a fuzzball,” Mr Helgen said. “Kind of like a cross between a teddy bear and a house cat.”

The study found it now costs a minimum of £148,000 to bring up a child to the age of 18 and meet their minimum needs, including childcare and housing, which is around £160 a week. The minimum necessary cost for raising a child rose by 4% in 2013, but in comparison average earnings rose by just 1.5%, the minimum wage increased by 1.8%, and child benefit stayed the same. The study also found the value of both child benefit and child tax credit relative to the costs of raising a child has actually decreased in the last year. Many low-income families have also seen cuts in housing support with the introduction of changes such as the spare-room subsidy. At the same time, working families have had to cope with increased childcare costs, which have risen by 5.9% in the last year. Alison Garnham, chief executive of Child Poverty Action Group, said: “This research paints a stark picture of families being squeezed by rising prices and stagnant wages, yet receiving ever-diminishing support from the Government over the course of the last year. Every parent knows it’s getting harder to pay for the essentials their children need, and they don’t feel like politicians see them as a priority. “Child benefit and child tax credit have been cut at the very time families need them most. Families are getting worse off and parents know it. Court Gives Go Ahead For Sterilisation A London High Court judge has agreed to the sterilisation of a man as it is “in his best interests”. It is the first time a UK court has made such a decision.

Referred just as “DE”, the 37-year-old has an IQ of 40, meaning he has the mental age of a child aged between six and nine. The judge confirmed a vasectomy could take place after hearing that DE does not want to become a father again, and another child could cause him “psychological harm”. He already has a young son, born in 2010, with his girlfriend. Experts said DE, although capable of consenting to sexual relationships, could not

properly make decisions about contraception. They said he could not be relied on to use condoms or other birth control methods effectively. The case came to court because of evidence that DE lacks the capacity to decide whether or not to agree to the sterilisation. A routine was in place to stop the man meeting his girlfriend without supervision to “keep them safe”, the court was told. There were worries that the man’s partner - who also has learning difficulties could become pregnant again. The man’s mother - as well as expert witnesses - all said he was adamant he does not want another child. It is hoped the vasectomy will give the man greater independence

in his relationship and that he can see his girlfriend without supervision. A local NHS trust made the court application for sterilisation with the support of DE’s parents and his GP. However, some critics have said giving consent for the vasectomy could pave the way for sterilisation of other people with learning difficulties. While Judge Mrs Justice Eleanor King acknowledged the sensitivities of the case, she said her decision required “strong justification”. She added: “In my judgement it is overwhelmingly in his best interests to have a vasectomy.” Mental health charity Mencap previously said it would support the decision if all the man’s interests were properly weighed up.

PARIS Jackson is “devastated” over her father’s death and “doesn’t feel like she has a life”, according to Michael Jackson’s ex-wife. debbie Rowe cried as she was questioned in a LA court about the 15-yearold’s suicide attempt.

“Her father is dead. I almost lost my daughter,” said Rowe, who confirmed that the teenager tried to kill herself in June. “She is devastated. She doesn’t have a life. She doesn’t feel like she has a life anymore.” The 54-year-old was appearing for her second day at the court case brought by Jackson’s family against concert promoter AEG Live. Jackson’s mother, Katherine, is suing AEG, claiming it failed to properly investigate Conrad Murray, the doctor convicted of giving her son an overdose of anaesthetic in 2009. Rowe also admitted she does not have a close relationship with her son, Prince Jackson, she said she rarely saw the 16-year-old, but added: “We don’t hate each

other.” Katherine Jackson has legal custody of the children but Rowe told the court that Paris stays with her on weekends. Debbie Rowe married Jackson in 1996 and the couple divorced in 1999.She recalled how she and Jackson agreed to have children: “I said, ‘what’s the thing that makes you the saddest?’ He said, ‘I never had any children.’” Rowe told him: “Let me have a baby with you. You can have the joy of being a parent.”

She said the star thought about it for a few weeks before agreeing. AEG Live has said Jackson, who was preparing for comeback concerts in London when he died, had prescription drug and addiction problems for years before entering an agreement with the company. It has also said that it did not hire or supervise Murray and could not have foreseen that the doctor would have been a danger to Jackson.

Anyone who watched TV in the ‘80’s will remember the much loved American sitcom “Different Strokes”. It was the story of the rich White family the Drummonds, who take in 2 poor black orphans from Harlem after their mother who worked for the family, died. With it’s funny scripts, likeable characters, catchy theme tune and quotable catch phrase “what you talkin bout Willis”, it was immensely popular and lasted for 8 seasons.

You’d think that the stars of such a popular show that lasted so long would be set for life, comfortable and relatively happy ever after. But it seems that fate had something else in store for much of this sitcom’s cast almost as if they were cursed...

Undoubtedly the most famous of the child stars, he remained small throughout his life due to a kidney disease. He had many run-ins with the law and his attempts to keep working often led to sad roles in which he was ridiculed. Bankrupt, he ended up working as a shopping mall security guard. He died at the tender age of 42 after hitting his head in a fall.

In case you’ve spent the last decade on Krypton or locked up in Arkham Asylum-movies about superheroes are doing pretty good these days, a fact the studios are well aware of, and recently suits are going to increasingly more extreme and expensive lengths, to ensure the stars that the public associate with their favourite comic book hero-keep wearing the Spandex.

Of course big pay packets are nothing new, however, often in the past, money was thrown at megastars to entice them aboard a “silly kids movie” in the hope of lending some credibility to the movie Jack Nicholson received a record breaking amount for his portrayal of the Joker in Tim Burton’s Batman (1989). Using his celebrity status he secured depending on which net article you believe, a $6m paycheck plus a nice percentage of the profits (he allegedly took home $100m quite a hefty amount and a record, way back in ‘89). It’s even suggested that in a particularly savvy move he got Warner Brothers to agree to pay him a percentage of the profits from ALL sequels-which depending on how good his lawyers are could even stretch to the Nolan/Bale “Dark Knight” trilogy!! Marlon Brando got a nice $3.7m for two weeks work in “Superman” (1978) to play Jor El -Supe’s real daddy, another record wage!! So, nothing new then, but recently film studios are seemingly determined to wring every last drop of earnings from these franchisee’s potential, by securing the stars for years to come in

multiple-movie deals for big bucks. Robert Downey JR who Hollywood wouldn’t touch with a barge pole for a few years, has played Iron Man, 4 times (5 if you count “The Incredible Hulk” cameo). His contract with Marvel ran out after Iron Man 3 and many feared that would be his last appearance as ol’ Shellhead but recent announcements confirmed he’s signed for Avengers 2 and 3 (no confirmation as yet for IM4, but 3 was a massive commercial success so I reckon they’ll throw more money at him) making him the highest paid actor in Hollywood!! Hugh Jackman has been flexing his Adamatium claws for 13 years now 3 X-Men movies, 2 Wolverines and a cameo in “X-Men 1st Class”. He’s also back for a starring role in that movies sequel “Days of Future Past”. Now his deal with Fox is ending the studio has offered him $100m to play the mutant 4 more times! Whether that’s X-Men, Wolverine movies, cameos or, most exciting of all, Wolverine has been an Avenger-it’s unknown. So, with all this evidence, we shouldn’t be surprised about the emerging rumour that, although he’s turned his back on the role after the end of Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy Christian Bale has been offered $50m for just one more go at donning the Batcowl to face-off against Henry Cavill’s Superman in the upcoming sequel to “Man of Steel” true or not-one things for sure, if you are an actor who isn’t allergic to rubber or spandex and would like to be set up for life-get scanning the comic books for a character you can make yourself synonymous with...Kerching!!

PARALyMPIC star Oscar Pistorius will go on trial on March 3rd next year over the killing of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. In his latest court appearance, he was formally charged and told that his bail conditions remained the same.

Court documents show that more than 100 witnesses will be called to give evidence at the trial, including one of Pistorius’ ex-girlfriends. Pistorius appeared to be very emotional at the hearing, and appeared to be praying with his brother and sister before the proceedings started. The three siblings held hands in a small circle and at one point Pistorius wiped his face with a tissue. His brother Carl later tweeted a photograph of Pistorius and Ms Steenkamp, adding: “Remembered like yesterday.

My life was impacted by u @ reevasteenkamp & the lady u were! Always close to our hearts.” The 26-year-old double amputee is accused of killing Ms Steenkamp, who would have turned 30 last Monday, in a shooting incident at Pistorius’ home in February. Pistorius denies he committed murder and says he shot Ms Steenkamp by mistake, thinking she was an intruder. The case was sent to the High Court in Pretoria. A judge will preside over the trial and ultimately pronounce the world-famous athlete innocent or guilty. South Africa does not have trial by jury.

The mandatory sentence for someone convicted of premeditated murder in South Africa is life with a minimum of 25 years in prison. Meanwhile, Ms Steenkamp’s uncle has said he has already forgiven Pistorius for killing her. Mike Steenkamp said the family have coped with her death by concentrating on her life rather than how she died. In an interview on ITV’s Daybreak, Mr Steenkamp said: “I think from the beginning and onset that we decided that we could never be side tracked from Reeva’s life, and I think that’s helped us tremendously.”

Try Placing an icepack behind your head or run cold water over your wrists for about 20 seconds on each wrist. This will cool you down for about 1 hour My favourite one is this and I use it regularly. Fill your bath with lukewarm water and get in. Once you are used to the temperature, put a bag or two of Ice into the water and the water will gradually cool down. This is extremely effective and the cool down lasts for a couple of hours.

Start Them Early

All children should be given some chores to do in the house in return for their pocket money. It helps them to grow up with a modicum of understanding that you have to work for things in life and that nothing is handed to you on a plate.

Now, even your baby or toddler can help clean the house with the “Baby Mop” It is a clever way of cleaning your floors. It’s basically a baby romper suit with mops attached onto the arms and legs, so that as a baby crawls, it cleans. The makers of this lunatic idea say that the 25 quid baby mop will teach your baby a strong work ethic early on in their life, encourage them not to drop food and give them a workout, causing them to sleep better. The baby mop is

available in sizes from 3 to 12 months and the makers claim that it will save money and time on house cleaning. They

also claim that it will give you more free time to do things you enjoy. I have never heard of anything so ridiculous in my life!

He is in the middle of a fight for survival as he has been accused of financial naughty’s. I suspect that the whole idiotic affair will blow over when he feels safe again.

Light Margarine

If you buy a light margarine take a look at the ingredients. One of the main additives is WATER.

You are getting less margarine for your money and when you come to spread it onto your bread or toast you invariably end up putting more of the stuff onto it. I have recently converted back to butter. I find that I need less of it on my toast or sandwiches and consequently, I am taking in roughly the same amount of calories.

There has been much conjecture about when or whether Primark will open in Tenerife. I got a bit fed up with all the usual gossip so I went to the big Meridiano centre where Primark is supposed to be opening and asked two or three members of staff.

The cleaner, the manager and a sales girl all told me that Primark will be opening in October where Intersport used to be. Now, you would think that they would know, wouldn’t you? It turns out that C & A is expanding and that the

area will be going to them. This doesn’t mean that our dreams of a new Primark are all pure fantasy. There will still be room for a store in the centre. There is just one problem. The Primark website states that there are no plans to open any new stores in this region. This doesn’t appear to be accurate information as there is no doubt that they applied for an opening licence in Tenerife and that their planned opening was late 2013 so the fans of the store should soon be hearing something. Keep your fingers crossed as the barmy Primani army will be advancing on the store on its first day of opening.

GOA, the popular holiday resort in India, has banned dance bars as it tries to keep control of the destination once famous as a raver’s paradise, in an effort to clean up its image. The state has been tightening controls on nightclubs and outdoor parties over the last few years, following a series of high-profile crimes which includes the rape and murder of a British teenager in 2008. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, elected in the south western state last year, has made cleaning up Goa’s palm tree-lined beaches a priority to make them more family-friendly: “Dance bars will not be allowed in Goa. There has been a lot of image-beating for the state due to the existence of drugs and prostitution on the beaches. We will clean it up,” Mr Parrikar announced on Thursday. His administration has come up with

a series of measures to safeguard foreign tourists and has ordered a police presence on the beaches until midnight. Previously police would leave after sunset. Goa, once a laid-back hippy beach hangout known for drugs, free love and music, retains its image as a free flowing oasis in the midst of straitlaced India and attracts 2.3 million foreign and domestic visitors annually. But its sleazy and criminal sides were exposed in 2008 by the death of 15-year-old British teenager Scarlett Keeling, who was raped by two men and left for dead after she consumed a cocktail of illegal drugs at a beach cafe. Her death prompted a crackdown on nightclubs and rave parties, many of which were forced to close or finish early. “Silent discos” - in which party-goers wear headphones to listen to the music - have developed as a way to work around the restrictions on outdoor noise.

gardening and Nature By Steve Andrews - aka Green Bard Everyone knows that bananas grow on Tenerife because you can’t miss them. There are huge plantations all along the coastal parts of the island but what other fruit trees can be grown here? There are a lot more than you might at first think!

The north of the island provides a cooler climate and in the lower mountain areas there are all sorts of fruit bearing trees you might expect to find in Britain but not think you would discover here. Plums, peaches, cherries, apples and pears can all be grown on Tenerife.. I remember finding a plum tree growing semi-wild in some wooded ground at the side of the road in Aguamansa some years back. The yellow fruit were so abundant and ripe that they were weighing the branches down and some had fallen to the ground. Apricots are often grown on the island as well. The avocado tree does well on Tenerife and an enterprising farmer has just planted a whole field of them near where I live in San Marcos. There are also many acres of avocado trees in Tigaiga in the north of the island. Mangos are grown all over Tenerife. I remember some growing in Costa del Silencio where I used to live when I first came to the island. This tree can become very large and reach as much as 30 m in height though they are usually much smaller when they start to produce their delicious fruit. Of course citrus fruit grow well on Tenerife too and oranges, lemons, limes, tangerines and grapefruit can all be seen growing here. All these fruit are a great source of vitamin C so make a healthy addition to our diets. Figs do well all over Tenerife and are often found on abandoned

Mulberry wine is another possibility. One fruit tree you won’t see in the UK is the Japanese medlar or loquat. They grow very well in Tenerife and provide the first harvest of fruit each year. They are very popular and get sold at markets and shops that sell fruit and vegetables. I prefer them straight off the tree though! More exotic fruits such as jackfruit, guavas and mameys enjoy the subtropical climate of the Canary Islands. And then there are the papaya trees which usually produce a lot of fruit and look very ornamental with their large leaves and fruit that hang down from around the trunk of the tree. They can be grown

from seed. The sea grape is an interesting tree with edible fruit. It has large circular evergreen leaves and bears clusters of fruit that turn from green to purplish-pink. They look very like bunches of grapes and are good to eat though they have a large seed inside each one. The sea grape is very drought resistant and doesn’t mind salty spray from the sea. Because of this it is often planted at the tops of beaches and in coastal gardens. There a lot of these trees in the upper part of Playa de las Teresitas and the ripe

Sweet chestnuts grow well in the north of the island and are another very popular food crop that is harvested each year. Roasted chestnuts are perhaps more popular here in Tenerife than they are in Britain nowadays? Walnuts are another nut tree that can be grown in Tenerife. I know where there is a large one in El Tanque. The tree that is the source of macadamia nuts will also grow on Tenerife and can be seen in some parks and gardens. It comes originally from Australia but grows well in the island’s subtropical climate. The flowers are very fragrant and the nuts are delicious raw or roasted. As you can see from this article Tenerife certainly offers a very wide variety of fruit and nuts.

The loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) is known as the “nispero” in Spanish.

It is a member of the Rosaceae or rose family. There are many cultivars of this tree and the flesh of the fruit can be yellow or white. The white flowers of the loquat are quite strongly perfumed and it is grown for its blossoms and ornamental qualities as well as its fruit. It is a very unusual fruit

tree because it flowers in winter and the loquats are ripe by spring. The loquat came originally from southeastern China but it was introduced to Japan where it became widespread. It is grown in many parts of the world today including Afghanistan, Iraq, Kenya, India, Pakistan and Hawaii. The loquat is often mentioned in ancient Chinese texts.

Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.

He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

area 51 – officially exists

FOR the first time ever, newly declassified CIA documents refer openly to the top secret parcel of land in central Nevada, called Area 51, the global focus of conspiracy theories, rumours of crashed UFOs, alien bodies and futuristic air force projects.

The proof comes in a US government history of the U2 spy plane programme, obtained by George Washington University’s National Security Archive through a public records request. It includes an unedited map of the secret site chosen to test the jet in the 1950s but never identified on any government map. Researcher Jeffrey Richelson first reviewed the history in 2002, but all mentions of Area 51 had been removed. He requested the history again in 2005 and, after an eight year wait; he finally received it with the references restored. “President Eisenhower also approved the addition of this strip of wasteland, known by its map designation as Area 51, to the Nevada Test Site,” the history reads. “The outlines of Area 51 are shown on current unclassified maps as a small rectangular area adjoining the northeast corner of the much larger Nevada Test Site. To make the new facility in the middle of nowhere sound more attractive to his workers, Kelly Johnson called it the Paradise Ranch, which was soon shortened to the Ranch.” Officials have already acknowledged in passing the

existence of the facility, but Mr Richelson believes the new document proves CIA is becoming less secretive about Area 51: “It marks an end of official secrecy about the facts of Area 51,” he told The Las Vegas Sun. “It opens up the possibility that future accounts of this and other aerial projects will be less redacted, more fully explained

in terms of their presence in Area 51.” However, the new openness only goes so far. There is nothing in the declassified files to shed any light on the existence of little green men from outer space, US government attempts to control the weather or any of the other, rumoured activities at the desert site.

FIESTA TIME!!!!

Churro

Ingredients:

90g sugar 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon 125 grams plain flour 125 grams self-raising flour 1 pinch of sea salt 450ml boiling water 2 tablespoons olive oil

Method: I always use the deep fryer for this making sure that you have nice clean oil inside. Set it to 175°c. If you don’t have a deep fryer you can use a pan with hot oil but you will have to ensure you don’t get the oil too hot. Mix the sugar and cinnamon together and set aside. Sift the flours with a good pinch of salt into a metal or heatproof bowl and make a well in the centre. In a separate bowl, mix the olive oil and

450ml boiling water together, and pour into the well, beating it well with a fork to get rid of any lumps. The dough should be slightly soft and sticky to touch. Let it rest for 10 minutes. Add the dough to a piping bag with a star-shaped nozzle and squeeze out Churro directly into the fryer, cutting them with a pair of scissors into the length you want. Be careful not to cook more than three at any one time, or they will all stick together. Fry for about 3 to 4 minutes until crispy and golden. Remove from the oil with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar. You can experiment with different shapes…. One of my favourites has to be mini bite sized pieces. They take a little less time to cook and if you don’t have a piping bag- simply use teaspoons to drop the batter into the fryer.

There are just a couple of weeks to go until my local village has its annual fiesta. For those of you that haven’t been to one – it is simply a must.

There’s always a great atmosphere, fiesta chiringuitos serving cheap beer and local wine; food stalls, toy stalls and great fantastic entertainment you won’t experience anywhere else. The highlight for me is, has to be the chance to get my hands on some lovely hot “Churro” – with a dipping pot of chocolate sauce. “Churro” or sometimes known as “Tejeringos” (in Andalucía) are basically a fried doughnut; they are generally prisms in shape, and may be straight, curled, bite sized balls or spirally twisted. Best of all they are extremely easy to make and wonderfully delicious!

The Simple Chocolate Sauce: Ingredients:

200 grams dark chocolate (roughly chopped) 50 grams milk chocolate (roughly chopped) 2 tablespoons golden syrup 300 ml double cream

Method:

Put all the chocolate in a heavy bottomed saucepan with the golden syrup and cream and heat over a very low heat, stirring continuously, to melt the chocolate, being careful not to let it burn. Alternatively, heat with short bursts in the microwave, stirring between each burst. Simples!

It was sold by Bonhams at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Chichester, West Sussex and the £19.6 million price tag includes the buyer’s premium. The previous world record for the most expensive car sold at public auction was a 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa which went for more than £10 million in California in 2011. The car was successful on many occasions and Fangio drove the 2.5 litre car to victories in the 1954 German and Swiss Grand

Alvis turned to the Swiss coachbuilder, Graber, which produced a sleek and purposeful design that was licensed to Willowbrook of Loughborough in a bid to overcome the logistical problems of dealing with the Swiss coachbuilders. However, there were quality issues to contend with, which led to work being transferred to Park Ward of London – and the end result was the TD21. In 1963, the new-generation TE21 finally appeared – and because it was such an extensive – nay, radical – revamp of the previous generation model, the new name was more than justified. The basic look might have been familiar, but with the stacked headlamps and nicely sculpted rear wings,

and a useful improvement in power, the TE21 maintained Alvis’ position near the top of the food chain. Available as a saloon or drophead coupe, with manual or automatic gearboxes, there was plenty of scope to please the widest customer base. Three years later, the TE became the TF21 – although this time, the update amounted to little more than in increase in power and a few other detail changes. Without doubt, the Alvis TE/TF21 range was a prime slice of British heritage, and ended up dying before its time thanks to being purchased by Rover before being engulfed in the Leyland morass.

Prix races, the first successive triumphs achieved by the factory Mercedes-Benz team in its post-war comeback. The car has been described as a technological gem. It was built specifically to win a world title and it effectively won two inside eighteen months with a final scorecard showing twelve starts and nine wins.

The car is extremely rare; only fourteen Mercedes Benz W196R machines ever existed. Ten still exist three are in museums and six inside Mercedes-Benz that leaves this recently auctioned Silver Arrow W196R chassis 006/54 which is now the only post-war Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow in private hands.

The A Team director Joe Carnahan resurrects the popular 1980s-era action series with this explosive reboot following the adventures of four Iraq War veterans who begin a second career as mercenaries for hire.

Breaking out with relative ease, they embark on a treacherous quest to clear their names while being hunted across the globe by Charissa Sosa (Jessica Biel), a high-ranking military officer and one of Face’s many former lovers. AROUNd one million tickets for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games went on sale this week. Glasgow is preparing to welcome 4,500 athletes from 71 nations and territories of the Commonwealth who will take part in the 11 day event in summer 2014.

The Glasgow-born ambassador for the Games Michael Jamieson officially started the process by diving into the refurbished pool at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre. Jamieson, who won an Olympic silver medal for the 200m breaststroke in London last year, trained at Tollcross when he was a young boy and will return to compete for Commonwealth gold for Team Scotland next summer. Young swimmers from Glasgow School of Sport joined the Olympian as he launched the start of ticket sales, with two-thirds of them costing less than £25. The swimmer anticipates Glasgow 2014 will be a highlight of his career and has encouraged people to get a seat and watch it live: ‘The difference between watching a big multisport event on television or actually being there and experiencing it is second to none,’ said the swimmer. ‘These are elite athletes in every one of the 17 sports competing against their rivals so no matter which sport you get tickets for you will be enthralled, excited and entertained. There is nothing to beat live sport.’ Lord Smith of Kelvin, Glasgow 2014 Chairman, said: ‘Glasgow 2014 in every sense is a Games for eve-

PARALyMPIAN Chris Hallam MBE, a pioneer of disabled sport, has died. The athlete won medals for swimming and wheelchair racing in the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Paralympian Games. Mr Hallam, who was in his late 40s, had retired from competitive sport in 1996, he had been ill for some time, and died last Friday, disability Sport Wales announced.

Mr Hallam, who lived in Pontypool, Torfaen, won the London Marathon in 1985 and again in 1987, setting course records. 1986 he completed a 400-mile wheelchair ride around Wales to raise money for a centre for the disabled at Cardiff Metropolitan University, he also won medals in Paralympics in Seoul, Barcelona and Atlanta. The wheelchair racer, paralysed below the chest in a motorcycling accident, was already a good swimmer and within a few years he won the 50m breaststroke at the World Disabled Games. .Jim Munkley, Disability Sport Wales board member and fellow British team member with Mr Hallam at the Seoul, Barcelona and Atlanta Games, said: “Chris will be remembered as a true legend of Paralympic and Welsh sport. Premier Footballer Capriati In Blackmail Plot In Court An un-named, married Premier League football player has been the target of an alleged blackmail plot. The international player is said to have been contacted by a man demanding £10,000 a month ago.

It is understood the footballer’s representatives called in police after refusing to comply with the alleged blackmailer’s demands. Officers investigating the allegations have arrested a suspect at his workplace. The man was led out of his office by detectives to be taken away for questioning. According to the report police have seized a mobile phone and are going back through text messages dating back over several years. Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome are just two international cycling stars that have sharpened their skills on the testing roads of Tenerife. The big names might not be over for the Vuelta Ciclista de Tenerife but 90 riders from over a dozen teams will be probing all corners of the island between 30th August and 3rd September as they clock up 360 kms in five stages.
