I love farmers markets, the sights, the smells, to say nothing to the prices. They are very popular over here and so, on page 11, you will find information about where and when you can find them. A friend of mine loves going to one in Puerto de la Cruz and delights in bringing back the biggest vegetables you have ever seen. It helps the farmers and, in turn, the local economy, so spoil yourselves and check them out.

Tenerife Weekly - 30th August 2013 - 5th September 2013 Another celebrity marriage is in trouble. Catherine Zeta-Jones and husband Michael Douglas are taking time apart to evaluate their marriage, page 25. US press reports state that Douglas has turned into a miserable old man, when he had throat cancer he practically blamed her. She in turn suffers from a bipolar disorder, and he has been less than supportive. I hope for the sake of their children, they manage to sort this out, privately. Cannot quite believe it myself – but it’s in the paper, so it must be true. Vivo Decades Christmas dates are

ritish expats may soon be allowed access to free NHS care in the UK based on their previous National Insurance contributions. At present British people living overseas and not resident in the UK are not entitled to receive NHS treatments.

But a review of who is entitled to health service treatments is expected to change this, says Shelter Offshore. It seems the government is considering allowing expats with at least seven years of National Insurance contributions behind them to have at least some access to free healthcare. For many expats this could be a financial lifeline. Medical costs abroad can be huge, depending on where expats decide to live. For example, research from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development shows that a heart bypass operation in the US is 50 per cent more than one in Canada.

Meanwhile a new report from the International Federation of Health Plans, which represents 100 insurance companies, highlights exactly how costly it can be to receive medical treatment in certain countries. In the US a CT scan costs $566 – around £365 at today’s exchange rate – against just £112 in the UK. Surgical costs vary just as wildly. In Spain an appendix removal operation costs $2,245, while in the US the same procedure is over $8,000. Prices are also high in Australia ($5,467) and in New Zealand ($5,392). A recent study from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office revealed many people simply do not understand

how much medical treatment costs. Almost half of Brits (47 per cent) mistakenly believe it would cost £5,000 or less to treat a broken leg in the US, despite the actual figure being more than eight times than that, costing approximately £40,000. Certainly any move to make NHS care available to Brits whether they are resident in the UK or not would be a welcome move for many who are put off moving overseas because of the cost of medical treatments. now available, see page 14. I know many of you will agree with me when I say that Christmas starts way too early these days. At least over here we don’t have decorations and cards for sale in August, at least none that I have seen, but everyone seems to be super organised this year and started making enquiries weeks ago. There are already two Saturday Specials sold out! So if you want a Christmas party with a twist, you know exactly where to come! See you all next week.

New Born Baby Found In Arico Dump By Janet Anscombe It was only just over a month ago that Tenerife reeled from the news that the body of a newborn baby had been found in a freezer in La Camella. The shock was profound, and there was considerable sympathy for the mother as well as the baby since such cases are so very rare. Well, rare they may be, but here we are a month later and another infant’s body has been found. The baby boy was found in the rubbish sorting area of Arico dump and was no more than a few hours old when he died.

The grim discovery was made on Tuesday by a worker who found a “receptacle”, said to be a bag of some kind, which seemed strange to him. He opened it, and at first thought he was looking at a doll, but then realized it was a real baby. Police were called immediately. The body of the poor little soul was transferred to the forensic institute where an autopsy has been carried out. So far the autopsy has confirmed the police’s original theory that the baby was alive when he was born, and that he died only a few hours after birth.

The body will remain in the forensic institute while further tests are carried out to try to clarify the exact point at which he died, and the cause of death. Unlike the case of the La Camella baby, the Guardia Civil is not this time ruling out the possibility of a crime, though they stress that there were no obvious signs of violence. Already, within 24 hours of the find, police had arrested a 42-year-old woman known to have given birth recently but who had no baby. DNA tests will be taken to confirm if the infant found at Arico was her child. The arrest comes after Arico dump confirmed the place of origin of the rubbish being sorted in which the baby was found. With this focal point police were able to crosscheck with local medical centers for pregnant women.

The hit film topped the box offices in 65 countries and was the largest premiere of Universal history in 41 territories. It was also the highest grossing at the international box office on the weekend of its release, and is the second highest grossing film in 2013. The filming of “Fast and Furious” generated revenue of 8 million Euros for Tenerife. The film has been an excellent promotion for the island and some of its most beautiful environments.

Filming on Tenerife, in addition to the eight million in expenditures in the island in respect of transport, accommodation or maintenance, but also offered some use of local talent as extras featured in the film. In recent years, Tenerife has been used as a base for big film productions, and every effort is made to help companies with regards to advice and assistance in aspects such as location of scenarios or obtaining permits from the Tenerife Film Commission and tourism of Tenerife.

Tenerife Weekly - 30th August 2013 - 5th September 2013

NEwS ON THE ROCK

the Canarian Government’s consejero de Obras Públicas, Transportes y Política Territorial, Domingo Berriel, has told the Tenerife Cabildo that it will provide 10m Euros for the Adeje to Santiago del Teide stretch of the TF1 extension, a piece that is already largely constructed. The monies are some 5m Euros less than originally promised, but it should be sufficient, the Government says, for the two major remaining sections of the stretch to complete, namely the Vicácaro and Erques bridges, and for equipment for the El Bicho tunnel. So it’s back on for now … A body was discovered washed up in the Anaga area in north Tenerife. It was thought to be that of a man, though it had clearly been in the sea for some time, and inevitably some are speculating that it could be one of the men who have been missing in Tenerife for some time. The grim find was made on some rocks near Chamorga Beach, and it was a complex operation to recover it due to the sheer and rocky terrain. In the end, after Policía Local officers and divers had failed to recover it, Nationals clambered down to attach the body to the winch of a rescue helicopter which had had to be scrambled. An autopsy will now be carried out, and hopefully it will provide an identification of the man, as well as a cause of death. spanish Courts are processing the extradition of an 85-year-old priest who was detained in Tenerife under the terms of a European Arrest Warrent requested by Leicestershire. The priest is accused of 16 charges of sexual abuse, one of sodomy, and another ten serious offences against altar boys in south Derbyshire. He is expected to be extradited back to the UK to face judicial proceedings. The National Police have said that although a “British” incident, the priest is Irish, and lived in the Arona area while in Tenerife. The offences of which he is accused apparently took place between 1955 and 1991 in more than one church. His youngest victim was allegedly seven years of age at the time of the assault. Guía de isora Ayuntamiento closed the small Playa Chica in Playa San Juan because of a diesel spill, thought to have resulted from the cleaning of a boat. The Ayuntamiento is investigating, and hopes to have some answers shortly: the authority says that it will take firm action against whoever is responsible for endangering the beach at the height of summer. For the moment, however, the stain of the oil and the smell of diesel in the water meant the beach’s closure on Friday afternoon. Los rodeos air traffic control’s twitter account exploded late on Sunday night after multiple reports from pilots of a light, lasting three or so seconds, so bright that it turned the night sky to day. Various theories have been put forward to explain the phenomenon, ranging from lightning to fireworks to UFOs, but ATC said that the pilots’ reports, all coming in between 10.20 and 10.30pm, were of a light of a different magnitude altogether. Given that flights near Madeira also reported a white light, moving downwards and with a long tail, the likeliest explanation, say experts, is that it was caused by a meteorite which fell to earth some 200 miles north of the Canaries. The army was advised of the incident, none the less, because protocols require any unexplained aerial phenomenon to be notified for defence purposes.

CAMPAiGN called “Cents for a miracle” has seen volunteers travel all over tenerife calling for donations to prevent two families from being evicted from their homes.

The movement is been led by local painter Darío Paz, who through his Facebook group “Se Busca a Robin Hood”- In search of Robin Hood - has already organized other popular volunteer schemes for the needy: “A friend I hadn’t seen in ages messaged me to tell me he’d had a dream about the Cents for a miracle initiative,” Paz told The Local. “It’s a great idea as it draws a parallel between the small cent coins and the people affected by evictions – Alone they seem worthless, but together they are powerful.” People of all ages and local businesses took to the streets of Tenerife on Saturday to hand over whatever spare change they had to the “Robin Hood” campaign. “It was quite something to see little children emptying their piggy banks to help out,” Paz explains. With the help of Spain’s anti-evictions lobby the PAH (Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca) and Candelaria Solidarity Foundation, Paz and his “group of merry men” managed to raise 700 kilos of coins: “It’s approximately 5,000 Euros worth, enough to save two families from being evicted,” he explains. “It’s also meant to be a bit of a kick in the teeth to the banks; handing them all the sacks of coins and saying ‘There you go, count them!’” Evictions in Spain reached a record high in 2012 with nearly 40,000 homes being repossessed due to unpaid mortgages. Spanish legislation has been widely criticized internationally as homeowners indebted to the banks still have to pay their mortgages after being evicted. The jump in evictions has soared to the top of the country’s political and social agenda thanks to anti-evictions lobby PAH’s intervention in the forced removal of people from their homes and widely published condemnation of banks’ actions during Spain’s worst financial crisis in modern history.

itNEssEs were astounded and perplexed when an extremely decomposed “sea monster” was discovered washed up on a beach near the village of Villaricos in Andalusia.

The 13 foot long rotting carcass appeared to have horns leading to speculative terms such as sea monster, sea serpent and sea dragon, being passed around to explain the identity of the strange beast. The “horns” on the head of the creature have had Spanish authorities completely baffled, but because of the putrid smell and due to a possible health risk for beach goers, local authorities in their wisdom, decided to bury the creature before it could be positively identified, but a few samples were taken to be analysed by experts. Photos soon began circulating the web and several theories including a “mutant fish, a type of shark or a giant oarfish”. More outlandish theories included sea dragon, a marine dinosaur and even the Loch Ness Monster! However the mystery looks to have been solved and it’s not as fantastic as a sea dragon. Dean Grubs, an ichthyologist at Florida state university claims the body is that of a shark, most likely a thresher; “that is definitely a shark skeleton...the elements toward the back were confusing me but those are the lower caudal fin supports. The “horns” are the scapulocoracoids, which support the pectoral fins”.

Tenerife Weekly - 30th August 2013 - 5th September 2013

“Horny” Sea monster? afraid not!

So that mystery was wrapped up neatly and tidily but here are some Spanish myths and legends involving the deep blue sea...

Mermaids The Spanish word for mermaid is sirena, and while in Greek mythology, a siren was a supernatural creature said to lure unwary sailors to shipwreck using their enchanting siren song, sirenas are the traditional kind with the upper body of a man (though more often woman) and the tail of a fish. The earliest stories originated in ancient Assyria, in which the goddess Atargatis transformed herself

out shame after she accidentally killed her human lover.

Fish Man A famous Spanish legend is the tale of “El Hombre Pez de Liérganes”, said to be an “amphibian human-looking being, that looked a lot like a metamorphosis of a real human being who was lost at sea”. The legend goes that in 1674 a carpenter from Liérganes went swimming near Bilbao, and was taken by strong currents, presumed drowned. Five years later fishermen in Cadiz found a strange creature tangled in their nets but it escaped before it could be examined, after numerous sightings over several weeks they eventually caught it; “he looked like a young man, of white skin and thin red hair, he also showed some fish-like signs, a strip of scales that went down from his throat to his stomach, another one that covered his spine and what seemingly were guts around his neck”. Believing it to be unholy, the creature was exorcised and interrogated in several languages until it uttered a single word,”Liérganes”. After eventually understanding the word as the name of a village, a friar got permission to take him there. Once close to the village the fish man led them directly to the door of his mother’s house, who immediately recognised him as her late long lost son! He lived, reunited with his family for 9 years, rarely speaking more than singular words and refusing to

wear clothes. After 9 years he went for a swim in the sea and never returned. Interestingly during his exploration of the New World, a journey that began here, in the Canaries,

5

Christopher Columbus reported a sighting of mermaids swimming alongside his ship in the Caribbean, stating that they were “not as pretty as they are depicted, for somehow in the face they look like men”. It is believed the explorer had stumbled across a group of Manatees or “sea cows” as they are also known!

San Borondón A leviathan? Of course the legend of the 8th Island of San Borondón ,the Ghost Island of the Canaries is well known, the island seems to appear out of nowhere then disappear without a trace-the original legend is from Celtic culture, and mentions several sea monsters, including the very island itself. Taken from an Irish poem, an Irish monk named Brendan sailed from Ireland in 512 AD along with 14 other monks in a small fragile ancient boat far into the Atlantic ocean, during which they were attacked by monsters and “pelted with flaming, foul smelling rocks,” reaching the “very edge of Hell itself” before seeking refuge on an island with trees and other plants. While they held mass, the island suddenly began to sail off leading them to realise they were atop a gigantic sea monster. Sea creatures big enough to be mistaken for entire islands can be traced back to the bible; the word Leviathan itself comes from the ancient Hebrew for “twisted or coiled”. It’s often used to describe any sea creature of enormous size, but often associated with Sea Serpents or Dragons- however, Modern Hebrew the word literally means “Whale”. Forever associated with the monk Brendan this mysterious island of myth and legend is now known as San Borondón - Saint Brendan.

AGE is no barrier to having fun in Adeje – the opposite in fact.

The council have organised a range of activities for the slightly older among us this summer, from walks to keep fit on the beach, there’s something for everyone. According to the Adeje councillor for senior citizens Carmen Rosa González Cabrera, “the programme of activities we have in place for our senior citizens and residents has been planned with health in mind, and is geared to improve the quality of life as well as offering a fun-filled summer, as we know that leisure time is important for everyone, regardless of age”. Every Tuesday and Thursday, people can enjoy one of many activities, with beach-based events a hugely popular option. Games in and out of the water have been organised, combining fun and essential exercise. There have also been some light-hearted competitions, including Miss and Mister Summer 2013, Miss Mermaid and Mr Shark. Carmen Rosa says that the level of participation among Adeje’s seniors is high, and feedback has been really positive, with people taking part in as many activities as possible. The department in charge of senior citizens in Adeje is based in the Cultural Centre.

www.tenerife-weekly.com Eyebrows were raised after it was revealed that Promoción Turística de Canarias (Promotur), which is a public company associated with the Canarian Government, have committed to spending over 32 thousand euros on a camera shoot to produce yet another photographic portfolio of the Canary Islands.

Saúl Santos Díaz, a professional photographer from La Palma, is being paid 28,000 euros, excluding IGIC tax, for a minimum of 45 photographs of the 7 islands and almost 5,000 euros in expenses to take them. Ricardo Fernández de la Puente, head of Promotur and also viceminister of Tourism for the Canarian Government, explained the contract awarded on the 5th August is very specific in its requirements: The photographs must reflect “the personality of each island” and

Tenerife Weekly - 30th August 2013 - 5th September 2013 “the various locations should be clearly identifiable”, furthermore the shots must have a very clear touristic objective ” to motivate the tourist to explore, discover and enjoy their holidays in areas of high ecological value and to discover the attractions of the local flora and fauna” At more than 700 euros per shot, as you would expect, Promotur is also purchasing the copyright to use the images as they wish for promotional and other publicity purposes for the next 20 years. The contract also specifies the scenes must contain a human element, people in the photos must be portrayed as spontaneous and natural, artificial looking poses must be avoided. This is not the first such expense; in 2012 Promotur also put out a very similar contract for tender. Last year’s project was awarded to Alex Bramwell & Lex Thoonen of Gran Canaria for a cool 45.000 euros, plus IGIC.

Which Goes First: Miss & Mister Adeje 2013 Chicken Or Egg?

Last Friday, August 23, at el Faro, the contestants of the Miss & Mister Adeje 2013, 10 ladies and 5 gentlemen aged 18 to 27 years, took part in a parade organized by José Baltran.

The Islands’ poultry sector has taken a radical about turn in recent months.

In contrast to 2012 when the price of eggs went through the roof, excess production is causing prices to plummet and some Canarian farmers are throwing away excess stock. The reason for this excess is not so much due to a fall in consumption, but local farmers adapting to European standards of animal welfare. European Union Council Directive 1999/74/EC banned conventional battery cages in the EU from January 2012 for animal welfare reasons but allows for enriched or “furnished” cages to be used. Under the directive, enriched cages must be at least 45 cm high and must provide each hen with at least 750 cm² of space; 600 cm² of this must be “usable area” – the other 150 cm² is for a nest-box. The cage must also contain litter, perches and “clawshortening devices”. Some animal welfare organisations have criticised the move, also calling for enriched cages to be prohibited as they believe they provide no significant welfare benefits to the animals. David Nuez, poultry producer and industry representative in Tenerife, says “In 2012 farmers had to get up to speed with regulations very quickly, they had to invest heavily to buy new cages for their hens as required by the European Union”. In order to afford the new cages farmers had to reduce the number of chickens farmed and consequently cut production, which in many cases reached as low as 30 per cent. Because of this the unit price

The winners, Tamara Adan Powney (Miss Costa Adeje), María Tania Rodríguez González (Miss Adeje), Rami Yussel Jarraj (Mr Costa Adeje) and Nicolás del Pino Orvich (Mr Adeje) will participate to Miss & Mister World Tenerife. rose by almost 50 per cent, also reflecting increases in feed prices. The gap in local production meant demand had to be met with eggs from the mainland, causing a strong external dependence. Now the situation has changed, all farms in the islands are adapted to European standards and local production is up. But farmers are being left with eggs in stock they cannot sell before the 28-day expiry date. This forces them to cut the price of eggs, or slaughter livestock and

many farmers have already opted for the latter route as they are left with un-sellable stock that has to be thrown away. Freshness is the only factor that enables us to compete with products from the mainland” said Nuez, “but during times of economic downturn the consumer is more concerned with price than freshness” In 2012, Spain farmed some 35 million chickens and the country as a whole is now hovering around 45 million.

A Night On The Town – Tenerife

To listen to some folk, you would think there are only two types of entertainment to be found in Tenerife, either the dancing dogs and snake charmers on the hotel circuit or bar crawls, boat parties and clubs where there are drinking games throughout the evening.

In my opinion the majority of hotel entertainment is a bit like the food, rather bland as it has to suit all tastes - although I am rather partial to a couple of the tribute acts that I have seen in some hotels. At the opposite end of the scale, if you are 18 years

old and on holiday it is great fun to dress up to the nines and visit Veronica’s Strip. While not quite up there with Ibiza, Tramp’s is probably the best known club in the area and what it lacks in size it makes up for with atmos-

Diana-mcglone.com According to José Trasobares de Dios, head of the Tenerife Provincial Labour and Social Security Inspectorate, over 28 per cent of the 880 hospitality industry premises inspected in the south of Tenerife had irregularities with their staff, which resulted in 252 contracts being set up retroactively.

The hotspots were in Adeje, Arona and Santiago del Teide, while Granadilla and Guía de Isora had fewer problems. Trasobares de Dios told the Spanish press most irregularities are directly related to leisure, clubs, restaurants and bars, but it is “very rare to find anomalies in actual hotel establishments” The Inspectorate head says these inspections represent a huge effort for his staff, 21 inspectors and 19 sub-inspectors, as 224 inspections

If either of the above are your ideal way to spend an evening then enjoy, however, Tenerife has far more to offer to meet all your music tastes than either of the above and not just in the cabaret and music bars. Nice weather means that outdoor music venues are common so sticking for the moment with the young, what could be better than the I Love Music Festival a regular ‘house’ music party held at Siam Park. The festival is huge and attracts some of the biggest names in the club scene. Visitors whose musical interests lie more with folk will be interested in Los Sabandeños. Set up in 1966 they were named “Best international

9

http://redqueenmusings.wordpress.com folk music group” by the North American magazine Record World. The group perform around the island as well as abroad and members always wear traditional costume and the classic “manta esperancera,” a typical coat worn by farmers in Tenerife. Jazz lovers are not left out, this year the 21st International Festival Canarias Jazz and Más Heineken kicked off in Tenerife. It has become a “must” for enthusiasts who can enjoy performances by some of the best-known names in jazz. Santa Blues is the most anticipated event for lovers of blues. It is another outdoor event sponsored by the Canaries Government and held annually in the capital. Back in the 1980s Peter Gabriel and a group of colleagues put their musical heads together and founded The WOMAD Festival (World of Music, Arts and Dance) this truly international music festival has been coming to the Canary Islands for a few days each year since early 2000. Unfortunately last year it was due to be in Gran Canaria and was cancelled. I’ve not heard if it will be happening this year, but really hope it will as

it is a laid-back event that attracts people of all ages. For the past two decades classical music lovers have been appreciating the annual festival, simply called the Canary Islands Music Festival. It is very popular and attracts prestigious orchestras and soloists from around the world. Tenerife even has its own Symphony Orchestra, (OST) founded in 1935 and currently conducted by Michal Nesterowicz, the orchestra has performed in countries such as the UK, Germany, Austria and China. The world of Opera can be a powerfully enjoyable experience for anyone who loves music and during October the Auditorio de Tenerife will be hosting the light-hearted Così fan tutte while November brings in top names to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi with Nabucco. The sounds of Hollywood are brought to the island with FIMUCITÉ, International Music Festival Cine de Tenerife. This 7th edition will make the journey though the careers of composers David Arnold (Stargate, Inde-

pendence Day, Sherlock) and Marco Beltrami (Hellboy, Soul Surfer, Immortal Wolverine), and will pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of James Bond films with a collection of recognizable tunes that have accompanied the action of the most famous secret agent in history. And finally, Musical Theatre. “History, The Musical”, pays tribute to composers and musicians from classics such as Beethoven to contemporary including Abba, Queen, or Adele, without forgetting The Beatles, Frank Sinatra or Elvis Presley. No matter what your native language everyone can, follow the adventures of the teenagers of Rydell High who move between love and cars all spiced up with rock and roll! So it was great to see the Spanish version of Grease and finally, it is here, my ALL TIME favourite West End Musical, Les Misérables I now know what will be on my Christmas wish list. It only goes to prove that despite popular misconception, Tenerife can offer a wide range of events and a full spectrum of genres for music lovers throughout the year.

Illegal Workers in 3 Out Of 10 Bars And Restaurants

took place during night-time hours and 110 at Bank holiday periods.

Non- existent, or under-stated hours on work contracts and work-

ers who are claiming un-employment were the main infractions discovered. There has always been a widespread idea that the savings to be made by evading Social Security contributions more than compensate for the fines levied, but since the amendment made by Zapatero’s government penalties have been significantly increased as a deterrent. For example someone found working “on the black” is fined a minimum of 3,126 euros that can rise up to 10,000 if they are also receiving unemployment benefit. Trasobares says that fines are not the only penalty, for example if there is any kind of work related ac-

cident; these off-the-books workers are not insured. The civil and criminal damages could be of a magnitude to ruin a business man for life. As far as the Inspectorate head is concerned, “reaching the fines stage is a failure of the system: “We want to make clear that our desire is not to raise funds, but to enforce proper labour standards and working conditions. Before getting to the sanction stage, we try to encourage compliance, but we cannot disregard the rights of workers. The economic crisis is not an excuse to allow an irregular economy and unfair competition to flourish ” concluded Trasobares.

silvia, a 41-year- old chimpanzee and the longest mammal resident at tenerife’s Loro Parque Zoo has been given back her sight after undergoing a human-type cataract operation.

Juan Vicente Martínez, head keeper and curator of mammals at Loro Parque describes Silvia, as “super quiet and good”. She was given a home at the park after being rescued from being chained at the neck and used by a street photographer to take pictures with tourists for years. The elderly monkey had been unable to see properly for some time because of the clouding of the retina of her eyes. She was having trouble playing with the other chimps and needed assistance from the zoo’s carers for both eating and drinking. In order to improve her quality of life, veterinary specialists from the UK and Italy travelled to Tenerife to submit Silvia to a life-changing operation. After the halfhour operation, the veteran chimp woke up to find a whole new world around her. She has completely recovered from her ordeal and now, after two weeks need no further medication She was receptive to her carers and began avidly watching nature documentaries shown to the chimps on a plasma TV in their precinct. The grandmother of the pack can now play her part as a chimp role model and rediscover everything she’s missed. The world’s first cataract removal surgery on a chimpanzee was performed in 2004 in Cameroon on a 40-year-old named Jackie. Human-type operations are often applicable to chimpanzees because they have 98.7% of the same physical characteristics as we do.

Farmers Markets In Tenerife

http://redqueenmusings.wordpress.com

W

hile I am not generally a lover of markets, like many, I am passionately fond of a good farmer’s market. You can only buy produce that is in season, it comes straight from the trees or the fields sometimes with the soil attached. At the markets you will find incredible fresh eggplant, parsley, broccoli, black and new potatoes, marrows, green beans, tomatoes, goat’s cheese, eggs, local red wine and honey. Prices are generally lower because the stallholders have no overheads, except the rent they pay for their trestle table. They do not have to pay for staff because it is, in the most part, the farmer’s family serving the public. At weekends, you will find one in almost every largish town. These are fun events where tourists mix with the locals to buy the freshest of agricultural produce.

Rural Market on first Sunday of the month will take place at The Commercial Centre El Mirador where you can purchase, wines, pastries, honeys and jams in an environment that recreates the traditional architecture of the island, sometimes there is live music as an added attraction. Open between 10am and 5.30pm Adeje (Beside Makro on Calle Archara, Barranco de la Torres, Adeje) Saturday and Sunday from 8am – 2pm. Shop like the locals. Stock up on fruit, veg, cheeses and wines and whatever else the local farmers bring to market that day. Arico, Calle Benitez de Lijo, Sunday 8am – 1pm Candelaria (Opposite the tourist info. office) Av. De Constitucion Wednesday 5pm - 9pm El Medano and Granadilla Thursday at the Square of Granadilla, and Tuesdays in the Plaza of El Medano from 8:00 to 14:00. El Rosario Plaza del Ayuntamiento Saturday & Sunday 8am – 4pm El Sauzal Calle Constitución, Monday to Thursday 8.30am – 1pm & 5pm – 7.30pm; Friday 8.30am – 1.30pm & 4.30pm – 7.30pm; Saturday & Sunday 8am – 2pm Güímar Plaza del Ayuntamiento, Saturday 8am – 1pm Guia de Isora (Main Square) Take your pick of fresh fruit and vegetables galore, homemade cakes and handmade crafts and trinkets Saturday 9am – 1pm. Las Chafiras (next to Bomberos) - Saturday, Sunday 8am – 2pm and Wednesday afternoons from 1.30pm. Excellent selection of fresh produce and home-made crafts there is also a coffee shop and children’s play area close to the site.

La Guancha between Puerto de la Cruz & Icod Saturday & Sunday 8am - 3pm La Laguna Plaza San Francisco, Saturday 7am - 3pm daily & 5pm 8pm on Thursday. This is one of Tenerife’s big big markets. La Matanza TF217 Saturday & Sunday from 8am - 3pm. Another big, buzzing market that has handicrafts and books as well as fresh food. La Orotava Calle Educadora Lucía Mesa Saturday from 8am - 1pm approx. 30 stalls. Puerto de la Cruz (Avenida Blas Perez Gonzalez First floor of the Mercado Municipal, part of the shopping centre) Daily except Sundays 9am – 2pm. There’s usually plenty of parking in the underground, except Saturdays when they also have a Flea Market. A mix of new and second-hand goods, books, clothes and ornaments. Santa Cruz - Nuestra Señora de Africa Avenida San Sebastián 300 stalls ensure you will find lots more than fruit and veg. Daily from 6am – 3pm. San Isidro (just off motorway junction) Saturday & Sunday from 8am - 2pm get here early to find a parking spot as this is very popular. San Miguel de Abona Poligono Industrial Las Chafiras Wednesday 4pm – 8pm Saturday & Sunday 8am to 2pm. Santiago del Teide Town centre Saturday & Sunday 8am – 3pm. Tegueste Behind the petrol station on the road leading from Tegueste to La Laguna. Saturday & Sunday 8.30am – 2pm. A mix of handicrafts, food and wine stalls. Valle San Lorenzo - New market has room for 82 stalls including farmers, ranchers, beekeepers, artisans and bakers.

eric roberts making a Complaint visits Loro parque By Sylvia From Crystal Clear Solutions

EVEry business, including banks, in spain are required by law to have a complaint book (“Libro de hojas reclamaciones”). Making a complaint in spain using this book is taken very seriously and in some cases, even asking for the book can result in a change of attitude of the person you are dealing with.

Every establishment will also display a sign informing clients of the complaint book. The official requirement is to use the book while making a complaint. In Spain, failure to present this book can result in the business being closed down. You will be required to fill in the following information in Spanish: • Location, town, date and time of where the incident occurred. • Your name and ID or passport number, address and contact phone number. • Name, NIF/CIF, address and phone number of the business/ person that the complaint is being made against. • Details of the incident. • Any documents relevant to the complaint such as receipts or advertising, keep originals and provide copies. If they fail to do so, go to the consumer organisation, OMIC (Oficina Municipal de Informacion al Consumidor) and give them the white copy of the complaint. The OMIC will send an inspector to the business in order to investigate your complaint. The complaint will be deemed ei-

ther public or private. If the complaint is considered public such as hygiene or safety, the matter will become formal and legal proceedings will take place. If the complaint is deemed private, it will be referred to the “Sistema de Mediacion” for arbitration and they will recommend a settlement. Both parties have the right to reject this settlement and the matter will go before a local judge to make a decision. If you have any questions, please contact us 659 606 775 or 922 085 124.

es, last Saturday two Tenerife residents, Linsey Sloan and Lorraine Mckeon took on the Tough Mudder Challenge, a 12 mile assault course which was held in Scotland – and they finished in one piece!!! At the time of writing the girls are winging their way back to Tenerife and we hope to have an interview for next week’s paper, with a total figure of the amount raised. Lorraine, owner of the Palms Chippy in Las Americas also very kindly donated 50% of the day’s takings to the pot, for which we are eternally grateful. Can’t wait to catch up in the next few days.

Thank you Highland Paddy Los Gigantes

A couple of months ago we were alerted to the sad story of a los Gigantes street cat, Tilly, who was fed by the staff at the Highland Paddy. He (yes, Tilly is a he!) and had been missing for a few days then showed up with horrendous injuries, we were told by kelly the manager. Wheels were put in motion and Live Arico went over to Los Gigantes to collect Tilly and take him to Dr Gilbert in Playa de las Americas. The report back from Dr Gilbert after a lengthy, complex and expensive operation was not easy on the ear! Tilly’s leg was badly broken in three places along with some nasty open wounds where his skin had grafted to the open bone. This ‘seems’ to be a clear case of being hit by a car and has resulted in Tilly having a metal pin placed in his leg and the need for a lengthy recuperation. On hearing the news of Tilly, the Staff

This Sunday the 1st September we will be at Blue Luna in Los Cristianos from 2pm to 6pm, with “Spanglish” the order of the day. So, you never know what will happen next. Come and see..... Sunday the 6th October sees us back at Horse Riding Adventures, Aldea Blanca, for Katie’s BBQ number 2. Can it possibly be as good as the last one? Probably, because it coincides with a show jumping competition. Details to follow but mark it in your diaries... On Saturday the 19th October we will be having a bit of a posh do. Get your best togs out for our black tie and posh frock fundraiser at Vivo, Playa de las Americas, from 7pm. Under the title Tenerife Wonders Of The World, the document edited by A. Yanes Perez, with texts and images provided by Antonio Pedro Tejera Reyes and photographs by Jesus and Antonio Ascanio Monteverde. The cover contains a map of Tenerife with a table of distances between the villages of the island. There is also a brief geographical description and details the most interesting sites and places of interest to visit, including Palacio insular, monumento a Nuestra Se帽ora in Candelaria, Palacio de Carta, Iglesia de La Concepci贸n, Iglesia de San Francisco, Castillo de Paso Alto. There is other information about where to stay during your visit in 1959, airline information, travel agencies, and cultural centres. Text is included about education, theatres, cinemas, societies and places of recreation,

transport, service stations, shops, hotels and restaurants. Providing a fascinating insight to the Island at the time. The reverse side shows a drawing of Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz and La Laguna. In addition, reports about the situation on the streets of the capital. It should be recalled that Tidbit is an English word which means a taste of, and that is precisely what we want to present in this section, references as a peculiar tourist guides, programs of festivals in other times, unique brochures, news featured in Canary Islands and American journals... The intention is to show to the public documents that, even though they are part of the library, go unnoticed and that, given their originality; they deserve a more prominent place among the collections of the Centre.

Mainland News In Brief According to authorities, fire fighters have been fighting several wildfires in Spain. The central government sent water-dumping aircraft and personnel to help fight a total of 15 wildfires in central and north western Spain. In Tres Cantos, a village north of Madrid, a blaze left a car charred and burnt out and the area was covered in thick grey smoke. Regional emergency services said on Twitter that blaze was being brought under control and that 40 people had been evacuated but no injuries were reported. Spain is highly prone to forest fires in summer because of soaring temperatures, strong winds and dry vegetation. Last year wildfires destroyed more than 150,000 hectares of land in Spain from January to July, after one of the driest winters on record. This year the winter was wetter and there have been fewer summer fires so far.

The number of tourists visiting Spain during the first seven months of the year smashed previous records with 34 million foreigners travelling to the country – the highest figure in history. While numbers of Russian and Nordic tourists rose, the UK, France and Germany continued to make up the majority of arrivals, accounting for 54.7% of visitors. Government estimates predict a further 22.3 million visitors will arrive in the third quarter of the year. Princess Letizia of Spain, the wife of Spain’s future King Prince Felipe, is apparently taking some time to assess her role as a member of the country’s royal family. Reports state that the princess, a former journalist, has left Mallorca, where the rest of the royal family is spending the summer holiday. Letizia flew first to Madrid and made a connection flight to Zurich, Switzerland, where she is believed to be staying at a “remote resort.” Several reports claim that the “pressure with her marriage and her royal responsibilities” is starting to overwhelm Letizia, who married Felipe in May 2004. The princess is not particularly popular with the Spanish public, who see her as tense, “rigid” and uncomfortable in public. Letizia’s cousin, attorney David Rocasolano claims that the Prince and Princess signed a pre-nuptial agreement that would grant Letizia an “assignment” should divorce be an option, but she would lose custody of their children, twins Leonor and Sofia. Up to 1kg of cannabis with a street value of up to 10,000 Euros was seized at Cork airport after customs officers stopped a man for routine profiling. The Spanish national, who is in his 40’s, was found to have swallowed the pellets. A sniffer dog indicated a positive reaction after the man disembarked a flight from Spain yesterday. The man was detained by customs officers and was taken to hospital, where the drugs were passed under medical supervision. He was arrested by gardaí, and will be taken to a Cork Garda station shortly. Spanish rescue services picked up more than 100 African migrants from boats in the Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea last weekend, incidents that have become increasingly rare. On Saturday, 47 migrants travelling on three boats were also rescued from the Mediterranean and taken to the town of Almeria in southern Spain. Thirty-nine others were transferred to Ceuta, also on the North African coast. In a week Spanish rescuers have assisted several hundred migrants, after 3,804 would-be immigrants reached the Spanish coast last year, according to interior ministry figures.

Greenpeace Slams Overdevelopment Greenpeace has slammed what it calls Fuengirola’s overdeveloped coastline. The town is not alone, as Marbella and Torremolinos on the Costa del Sol also received the “award.”

According to Greenpeace Andalucía, 95% of the 500 meter wide strip on the coastline in Fuengirola is developed. This caused Greenpeace to add Fuengirola, to a list of several Spanish coastal towns to become a recipient of the “Burbuja inmobiliaria de oro” (Golden Housing Bubble) award. “Fuengirola was selected to receive the ‘Burbuja inmobiliaria de oro’ here in Andalucía because 95% of land located 500 meters from the sea or less in Fuengirola is completely developed,” said Pilar Marcos, the director of Greenpeace España’s coastal campaigns. The environmental organization has been using the golden balloon as a “award of dishonor” “to name and shame” municipalities where it believes over-development and/or planning abuses have taken place. In Fuengirola’s case, the giant golden balloon was installed by volunteers in Theresa Zabell Square in the town center. Next in line after Fuengirola come a couple of other culprits in the “urban abuse” stakes in Málaga province, namely the popular seaside resort towns of Marbella and Torremolinos. Greenpeace says that the three coastal resorts “could and should do better.” However, a Greenpeace spokesman did say that they are by no means “the worst offenders in our country.” He said that these would include Calpe (Alicante), Calvià (Mallorca), and Chiclana de la Frontera (Cadiz).

For examples of resorts building in an ecologically-sound and sustainable manner, the spokesman cited Fuencaliente de La Palma (La Palma), Vallehermoso (La Gomera) and Villaviciosa (Asturias). The “awards” were timed to coincide with a new Greenpeace report, “Destruction At All Costs 2013.” This report finds that between 1987 and 2005, two hectares of previously undeveloped shoreline, or the strip of land 500 meters from the sea, was built upon every day. According to reports a British man has been found dead in the sea off Ibiza after a night of partying on the holiday island. John Sharp, 31, died last Thursday, his body was reportedly found in the ocean on Saturday morning.

Mr Sharp had taken several drugs including cocaine, ecstasy and speed, according to a post-mortem examination. Witnesses also reported seeing Mr

Sharp drinking heavily. Police believe he was dead for at least 24 hours before his body was pulled from the sea near the Playa d’en Bossa resort. Mr Sharp’s parents are said to have arrived on the island to identify him after being contacted by the Foreign Office, who are providing consular assistance to his family. The Spanish island has long been seen as a mecca for clubbers, with some of the venues drawing crowds of thousands in peak season.

Andalucía is planning to ease development restrictions on “virgin land” along some of southern Spain’s coastline. Local media reported last week that, “The decree, drawn up by the PSOE-IU coalition at the helm of the Junta, will affect some construction plans on the Costa del Sol, but not as many as the town halls (most of them governed by the PP) had feared.” “The ‘Plan de Protección del Corredor Litoral de Andalucía’ (Corridor Protection Plan of the Andalusian Coast) is to be on public display until October 31st to allow affected parties to present their objections.”

Spanish Police “Large Feline” Inspect Gib Reef Spotted Roaming In Spain S

The diplomatic row between Britain and Spain has intensified even further after images emerged of Spanish police divers inspecting a controversial concrete reef off Gibraltar, which was built by the British overseas territory.

Gibraltar’s government has dropped 74 concrete blocks onto the sea floor to create the reef, which it says will boost marine life. Madrid has reacted furiously to the construction, with Spain claiming that its fishing industry has been damaged as a result. Fishermen say there are iron bars protruding from the blocks which tangle and break their fishing nets. But the Rock’s Governor, Sir Adrian Johns, says the actions of the police divers mark a “serious violation of British sovereignty”. In a statement, the Government of Gibraltar said: “Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar notes the incident of executive action taken by the Guardia Civil in British Gibraltar Territorial

panish authorities are using night vision equipment to hunt for a panther-like big cat that has been spotted by residents. Several people have reported seeing the black “large feline” in farmland around Berja, just inland from the south coast.

Waters in the area of the new artificial reef. The matter of this serious incursion will not assist in de-escalating the present tensions.” Tensions between Spain and the British territory have been described as at their worst in 40 years. Spain has imposed tighter controls at its border with Gibraltar amid the continuing row, causing long tailbacks at the crossing. The move has prompted

angry words from British officials. But Gibraltar’s chief Minister Fabian Picardo has said the waters could be reopened to Spanish fishermen again by October, potentially offering a means to resolve the spat. Mr Picardo said Gibraltar would not remove the concrete blocks, as Spain demands, and rejected fourway talks with Spain, Britain and Andalusia.

Fight Club Arrests

Police in Catalonia arrested 17 French people who travelled to Spain to take part in fights involving knives and knuckledusters. Officers from the region’s Mossos d’Esquadra police force arrested the men in two separate incidents last weekend that took place in a Salou hotel and a nightclub car park.

The ‘fight club’ is understood to consist of groups of young men who travel regularly from the suburbs of cities in the south of France to the Costa Daurada to drink and hold mass brawls. Police sources told Spanish daily 20 Minutos that similar fights had been taking place for years in the area. The participants, said to be of North African origin, fight among themselves but do not initiate trouble with other groups. They used knuckledusters and knives in their first brawl on Saturday night, in a hotel in the popu-

Several cages containing meat and image intensifying cameras have been set up in an attempt to catch the beast. Search coordinator, Jacinto Navarro, said: “From all the witnesses’ descriptions it seems it is a black panther but we’re not sure. This very morning, almond farmers called us saying they were stunned to see this animal walking around. They are worried because we are dealing with an animal that is dangerous in the wild. We guess that someone who had the animal as a pet let it loose in this area.” The area where the beast

has been seen lies about half way between Granada and Almeria, about ten miles inland from the Costa Tropical and not far from the Costa del Sol. Mr Navarro, an environmental officer for the Andalusia regional government, said there had been no reports of such an animal going missing in the area. But the authorities were taking the reports seriously as it was feared it could be roaming around the Sierra Nevada National Park. The park is popular with walkers and the local government feels it cannot take any risks.

The “absolute priority” of the team of three environmental officers and three police was to catch the feline alive, he said. Earlier, despite setting up two cages in the area with large chunks of meat inside, they trapped no more than a domestic cat and a fox, both of which were released. Two more cages and two nightvision cameras were added. If the animal is trapped, officers hope to shoot it with a tranquiliser gun and hand it over to a zoo in the neighbouring town of Tabernas which has offered to take it in.

lar resort of Salou. It was described by police as being especially violent. A day later, an even larger group was involved in a “massive fight involving weapons” outside a well-known nightclub in La Pineda, Vila-seca. One man was seriously in-

jured and cut in the neck “one millimetre from his jugular”. Two of the men arrested tried to run over police officers as they fled the parking lot. They were charged with reckless driving and assaulting police officers.

Just released Government figures show that waiting lists for surgery in Spain’s public hospitals were the longest on record in 2012 as emergency spending cuts hit home. Updated figures for December 2012 published by the health ministry showed the average waiting time for a non-urgent operation was 100 days, up from 76 days in June of that year.

It was by far the longest waiting time and the sharpest rise since records began in 2004, the data showed. The figures showed that 571,395 peo-

ple were waiting for operations in December 2012, up from 536,911 in June and from 459,885 in December 2011 when the current conservative government took power. In December 2008, the first year of the financial crisis that forced Spain into a double recession, the number of people waiting was 364,397 and the average waiting time 71 days. Last year the government imposed cuts to health budgets and staff numbers as part of a programme to save tens of billions of euros which is aimed at strengthening Spain’s public finances.

nude tomatina festival: pay to throw! night rider POLiCE in spain have arrested a man accused of trying to escape from police while drunkenly riding a motor scooter in the nude.

Investigators said a pair of Civil Guard traffic units in Utrera responded early on Sunday to reports of a nude man riding a scooter unsteadily on a local road and the man allegedly refused to stop when ordered, fleeing “in a reckless manner,” The local.es reported on Monday. The man endangered pedestrians during the chase by riding up on sidewalks, police said. The man eventually fled on foot and fell into a field of sunflowers, police said. The suspect is facing charges of reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.

FOr the first time ever, the town famous for hosting spain’s annual tomatothrowing festival, La tomatina, is charging a fee to take part, and it appears that people are happy to pay to indulge in the world’s biggest food fight.

Around 20,000 people from across the world will pack the town of Bunol, many wearing goggles to protect their eyes from the stinging juice, before launching into onehour of war with tomatoes. This year, for the first time, they will pay a minimum of 10 euros for the privilege of pelting each other with tomatoes in streets that end up flooded in the red juice. The price goes up to 750 euros if you want to ride in one of the six trucks that will bring in the 130 tonnes of tomatoes. Private company, SpainTastic, has been charged with selling tickets to the Tomatina, raising concerns that Spain’s town festivals may be on the path to privatisation. Days before the festival, almost all tickets offered by SpainTastic were sold out. About 60% of the tickets went to people aged 18-35. The oldest was 82. Organisers have cut the number of participants by half citing safety concerns over the size of crowds. The festival will have 180 safety officials, 50 private security as well as police and organisers. Emergency

services will have nine ambulances and several helicopters on hand. ‘This is the first year we are charging for access to this popular festival due the need to limit the crowd for safety reasons,’ Bunol town hall said

3-Year-Old Travelling Brits Warned Drowns On Holiday To Watch Out For Unusual

A three-year-old British boy died after falling into a swimming pool during a family holiday in Spain. Relatives reportedly tried to save Shae Colford after they discovered him floating in the water at his grandparents’ home in Cartama, near Malaga. Shae is said to have died in a car before he could reach hospital on the Costa del Sol.

The great-grandmother of a three-year-old British boy who died after falling into a swimming pool on Spain’s Costa del Sol has paid tribute to him. Speaking from her home in Leicester, Shae’s great-grandmother, Marjorie Colford, said she was told of Shae’s death on Sunday but did not yet know the circumstances of the tragedy. Mrs Colford, who is in her late 70s, said: “I don’t know what happened but we are terribly upset, all the family is. Shae’s mum and dad are still in Spain and they will be coming home as soon as the body is released. It’s only just happened and

we are just grieving at the moment. He was a lovely little boy, he was just lovely.” His death came on what has been dubbed Spain’s “Black Sunday” after another two people reportedly drowned in the sea. Around an hour after the boy’s death, a 50-year-old man was found floating in the sea off the coast of Torrox. And earlier in the day on the Costa Azahar a Romanian woman, aged 46, drowned off the coast of Castellon. The Foreign Office said officials were supporting the British child’s family in Spain.

Jellyfish Invasion

Tourists from all over Europe cram the beach on the Spanish island of Formentera, but now they need to be extra vigilant about their surroundings It’s what Spaniards call “medusas” — named after the monster from Greek mythology, with a woman’s face and venomous snakes for hair. We know them as jellyfish.

Up to 150,000 people are treated for jellyfish stings on Mediterranean beaches every year, and increasing. Along some stretches of Spain’s coast, scientists have spotted huge, mile-long blooms of jellyfish, sometimes with 30 to 40 animals per square yard of sea. Stefano Piraino, a marine biologist at Italy’s University of Salento, recently completed a flyover of 200 miles of Mediterranean coast, to monitor growing jellyfish populations. He thinks he knows the reason:

Laws And Customs

Foreign Office encourages residents and visitors to be aware of local legislation

Playing bingo, snacking while sitting on a monument or feeding pigeons may seem innocent enough to many British citizens, but these are just some of the reasons why people have found themselves faced with hefty fines or in some cases arrested or detained abroad.

Every year Brits are caught out by local laws and customs which might seem harmless in the UK, but some of which carry serious consequenc-

es abroad. Such incidents can easily be avoided by researching travel destinations in advance and taking note of updates and warnings issued by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). A recent FCO report* identified that more than a quarter (27%) of cases requiring consular assistance were for arrests or detentions, highlighting the value of familiarising oneself with local laws in order to steer clear of trouble.

Charles Hay, FCO Director of Consular Services said: “Consular staff often find that

travellers are unaware that local laws apply to them and many British nationals think of their British passport as a ‘get out of jail free’ card. While consular staff will always try to assist British nationals who find themselves in difficulty abroad, we can’t interfere in another country’s legal processes.” “We want Britons to have a great time when they travel abroad so it is a good idea to research the country they are visiting before they travel. Country specific laws and customs can be found at www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice .”

Some unusual overseas laws and customs to watch out for include: Country

It is against the law to wear a bikini, swimming trunks or to go bare-chested away from the beach front area in Barcelona

“Overfishing is one reason. Because if we take out the fishes from the oceans, we leave more food in the environment, and jellyfish are very smart,” he says. “They can multiply very easily in a very short time — much faster than any vertebrae, any fish in the sea.” He believes research will eventually show that climate change is also to blame: “Many of the species we are observing have a faster growth rate with increased temperature,” he says. “There are a number of alien species coming from the Red Sea, so tropical and subtropical species, that have entered the Mediterranean Sea from the Suez Canal.” Most jellyfish in the Mediterranean do not sting, and those that do aren’t life-threatening. But they can hurt tourism, a major source of revenue for Spain and other coastal countries. Britain’s foreign office put out a jellyfish warning to its citizens holidaying on the Med this

summer. In addition to red, yellow and green flags that indicate whether it’s safe in general to swim, Spain has also introduced jellyfish warning flags on some beaches. But Piraino, the Italian scientist, says he doesn’t want to scare tourists, he wants to recruit them. He’s developed a smartphone app on which people can report jellyfish outbreaks: “If you are on the beach and you see

Large fines and confiscation

some jellyfish, you can even send us a picture. In the last three years, we received around 10,000 records from citizens,” Piraino says. “You can imagine, if the same campaign would have been carried out by scientific boats or personnel, it would have cost an enormous amount of money.” You can report jellyfish sightings, and what to do if you are stung at www.jellyfishreports.com

www.tenerife-weekly.com The last wishes of 230,000 British Empire of soldiers killed in World War One and unseen for a century are being made available for the first time, online.

The wills of the soldiers are written in their own hand, and have been placed on a new website, allowing families and historians to view them for the first time. 5% of the wills contain a treasure trove of personal letters penned by the soldiers and intended for loved ones back home, but which were never posted. Instead, those letters have lain alongside the writers’ wills in sealed archive boxes for 100 years. In one of the letters, written on August 10, 1914, Private Joseph Witchburn of 2nd Battalion The Durham Light Infantry tells his mother: “I dare say this will be the last letter you will receive from me until the war is over, as I am prepared to move to the front at any moment.” An anonymous government official recorded on his will that he died of his wounds on September 14, 1914. Another will belonging to John Fleetwood, grandfather of rock band Fleetwood Mac’s Mick Fleetwood, reveals his death from dysentery in a hospital in Malta on December 30, 1915, after serving in Gallipoli. That document was discovered by leading British historian Jon Cooksey who was given access to the new database before Thursday’s website launch. He praised the value of the archive and said: “What this does is help us, as historians, piece together the mosaic of facts which give us the real men.” Archivists at specialist record

Last Wills Of WW1 Soldiers Now Online

Management Company Iron Mountain spent five months first indexing and then scanning by hand the soldiers’ wills so they could be put

on to a computer and then online. The work was undertaken under contract from Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS),

which is responsible for the records. The wills are held in a secure facility run by the company on the

21

outskirts of Birmingham, while the digital copies are stored in a data centre in Milton Keynes. In total, the facility holds 41 million wills and probate records dating from 1858. All the hard copies are carefully stored in pH neutral boxes in sealed climate-controlled and fire-proof rooms where the records should survive “in perpetuity” according to Iron Mountain. John Apthorpe, the firm’s commercial director, said: “With 230,000 individuals who died in the war, the emotions (that come through) are quite interesting when you read some of the notes they left. A lot have straightforward statements, but some of them do have personal letters and touches, and a bit more detail about what’s happening.” Courts Minister Helen Grant said: “This fascinating project has opened the door to a whole new insight on our war heroes - it has given us the opportunity for the first time to hear the thoughts and emotions of the brave soldiers who died for this country in their own words.” The wills, classed as official records, were only previously accessible through direct requests. They were not released to beneficiaries because they belonged to the then War Office and the Government. The short-form wills presented on small pieces of paper were often handed to soldiers by their company officers and senior noncommissioned officers to be completed before embarkation for a theatre of the war, which raged across the globe from July 1914 until November 1918. :: The archive can be accessed at https://www.gov.uk/probatesearch

Hypnotist In Trance Life On Earth – For Operation Started On Mars

Alex Lenkei, who works as a hypnotist, chose to forgo traditional anaesthetic and instead put himself in a trance for the ankle replacement surgery. While it was not the 66-year-old’s first foray into the world of operations under hypnosis - he has had six operations that way - it was the first time for orthopaedic surgeon Dominic Nielsen.

Mr Nielsen performed the two-hour operation, which involved saw cutting through Mr Lenkei’s bone, at Epsom Hospital in Surrey: “It certainly was a bit nerve-wracking making the first cut, not being sure whether he would be able to feel it, but once we got through that bit it became very much like doing any other ankle replacement,” said Mr Nielsen. “He did amazingly well with the whole thing. To be honest, it was just like doing any other operation. Alex went through

the process, which took a very short period of time, and he told us he was ready to go ahead ... It sort of went out of my mind that he was awake and able to correspond. He made a couple of comments during the operation which obviously reminded us that it was a strange experience, he commented at one point on the noise of the saws and was just asking how it was going. It was very strange.” An anaesthetist was on hand in case anything went wrong during the July 8 operation, but he was not needed. Mr Lenkei, from Worthing, West Sussex, said: “I’m not averse to anaesthetic - it’s just

that my pain control is a hell of a lot better than the medical profession’s and I heal a lot quicker because my body doesn’t have to get rid of all of the chemicals. Most doctors are scared because obviously it is not something that they come across in the medical profession, as such. The brain is a very sophisticated computer and if you press the right buttons it will do amazing things if you press the right buttons it will switch certain things off.” Mr Lenkei, who suffers from osteoarthritis, six operations without general anaesthesia include surgery on his hand, a hernia removal and freeing a trapped nerve near his elbow.

According to scientists, life on Earth may have started millions of miles away on Mars. An element believed to be crucial to the origin of life would only have been available on the surface of the Red Planet. These “seeds” of life probably arrived on Earth in meteorites blasted off Mars by impacts or volcanic eruptions, Geochemist Professor Steven Benner claims.

Prof Benner, from The Westheimer Institute for Science and Technology in the US, said: “The evidence seems to be building that we are actually all Martians; that life started on Mars and came to Earth on a rock.” Speaking at the Goldschmidt 2013 conference in Florence, Italy, he said: “It’s lucky that we ended up here nevertheless, as certainly

Earth has been the better of the two planets for sustaining life. If our hypothetical Martian ancestors had remained on Mars, there might not have been a story to tell.” Prof Benner said the element molybdenum was thought to be a catalyst that helped organic molecules develop into the first living things: “This form of molybdenum couldn’t have been available on Earth at the time life first began, because three billion years ago the surface of the Earth had very

little oxygen, but Mars did. It’s yet another piece of evidence which makes it more likely life came to Earth on a Martian meteorite, rather than starting on this planet.” He added: “Analysis of a Martian meteorite recently showed that there was boron on Mars; we now believe that the oxidised form of molybdenum was there too.” Another reason why life would have struggled to start on early Earth was that it was likely to have been covered by water, said Prof Benner.

thE National Farmers’ Union (NFU) has confirmed a controversial badger cull has started in two counties in England as experts insist it is a vital move to stop the spread of bovine tB. Around 5,000 badgers are expected to be killed in Gloucestershire and somerset over the next six weeks under the two pilot schemes.

Farmers and the Government insist culling of badgers is needed to stop spiralling rates of TB in cattle herds. NFU president Peter Kendall said the cull was “an important step not just for cattle farmers but for the whole farming industry”. He wrote: “We cannot go on culling tens of thousands of cattle every year because of TB while knowing the disease exists in wildlife uncon-

trolled.” He added: “Badger control remains a controversial subject and we understand that some people will never agree with controlling badgers in this way. I hope that when time shows that these culls have reduced TB in cattle - just as has happened in Ireland - that even more people will understand that while sad, these culls are absolutely necessary.” But opponents say culling the protected animal will have only a small effect on infection rates and will lead to badgers suffering. They want the emphasis to be on vaccines and tighter on-farm and cattle movement measures. Campaigners turned out in large numbers at the pilot sites on Monday night to protest against what they call “inhumane” action. Environment Secretary Owen Paterson said the badgers would be shot by trained marksmen “under

very carefully controlled circumstances”. “It is something I think we all approach with regret but for the last 15 years we have been the only country with a significant problem of bovine tuberculosis in cattle and bovine tuberculosis in wildlife that has only tried to address the problem in cattle,” he said. Mr Paterson stressed that the evidence from abroad showed the cull was the only route until the disease in reduced in wildlife and there is a vaccine for cattle. We are working really hard and leading the way in Europe on cattle vaccines but we are at least 10 years away,” he said. However, Labour condemned the pilots and claimed they would actually spread TB further as badgers are moved around. Shadow environment secretary Mary Creagh said: “The Government’s divisive badger cull will cost more than it saves and will spread bovine TB in the short term as badgers are disturbed by shooting. We need a science-led policy to manage cattle movements better and a vaccine to tackle TB in cattle. Ministers should

listen to the scientists and drop this cull which is bad for farmers, bad for taxpayers and bad for wildlife.” RSPCA chief executive Gavin Grant agreed, saying: “Science has shown that this cull is not the answer to bovine TB in cattle. In fact, it could make things a lot worse. Vaccination and better bio-security are the only sustainable and true ways forward.” Stop The Cull claimed on its Facebook page, which has over 11,000 likes, that more than 500 people turned out

to protest at both pilot sites on Monday night. Somerset Badger Patrol held a vigil in Minehead and said more than 200 people took part. “We fight on, knowing that we are right helps,” it said in a statement. The High Court has granted an injunction to stop farmers involved in the culls being harassed and abused after complaints they had been targeted. The cull was due to begin last autumn but was postponed while research continued into the population num-

bers in both areas. The Government said west Somerset has approximately 4,300 badgers, with another 3,600 in west Gloucestershire. The aim is to kill 70% of the animals. The culls, which will be carried out every year, for four years, will last for last six weeks and are allowed to take place between June 1 and January 31. If they are successful in stopping the spread of bovine TB, they could be rolled out, saving millions in compensation to farmers.

“I Have A Dream” 50th Anniversary

P

r e s i den t Barack Obama addressed crowds on the steps of Washington’s Lincoln Memorial, the site of Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech on August 28, 1963 as part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary.

“We rightly and best remember Dr King’s soaring oratory that day - how he gave mighty voice to the quiet hopes of millions,” Mr Obama said. “His words belong to the ages, possessing a power and prophecy unmatched in our time.

It was a moment rich with history and symbolism - the first black president standing where Dr King first spoke of his dream. But Mr Obama also pointed to the nation’s lingering economic disparities as evidence that the civil rights leader’s hopes remain unfulfilled: “In too many communities across this country, in cities and suburbs and rural hamlets, the shadow of poverty casts a pall over our youth,” the president said. “And so as we mark this anniversary, we must remind ourselves that the measure of progress for those who marched 50 years ago was not merely how many blacks could join the ranks of millionaires. It was whether this

country would admit all people who are willing to work hard regardless of race into the ranks of a middle-class life,” he said. Prior to Mr Obama stepping to the podium, the same bell was rung that once hung in the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, before the church was bombed in 1963. Two former presidents, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, spoke movingly of Dr King’s legacy, and of problems still to overcome. “This march, and that speech, changed America,” Mr Clinton declared, remembering the impact on the world and himself as a young man. They opened minds, they melted hearts and they moved mil-

lions - including a 17-yearold boy watching alone in his home in Arkansas.” Mr Carter said Dr King’s efforts had helped not just black Americans, but “In truth, he helped to free all people”. Mr Carter went on to list a string of current events that he said would have spurred Dr King to action in this day, including the proliferation of guns and stand-your-ground laws, a Supreme Court ruling striking down parts of the Voting Rights Act, and high rates of joblessness among blacks. Oprah Winfrey, leading the celebrity contingent, remembered watching the march as a nine-year-old girl and wishing she could be there to see a young man

who “was able to force an entire country to wake up, to look at itself and to eventually change. It’s an opportunity today to recall where we once were in this nation,” she said. Tens of thousands assembled in wet weather at the Lincoln Memorial, where Dr King, with rhythmic oratory and a steely countenance, had pleaded with Americans to come together to stomp out racism and create a land of opportunity for all. Dr King’s eldest son, Martin Luther King III, just five when his father spoke at the Mall, spoke of a dream “not yet realised” in full: “We’ve got a lot of work to do but none of us should be any ways tired,” he said. “Why?

23

Because we’ve come much too far from where we started.” Organisers of the rally broadened the focus well beyond racial issues, bringing speakers forward to address the environment, gay rights, the challenges facing the disabled and more. The performers, too, were an eclectic crowd, ranging from Maori haka dancers to LeAnn Rimes singing Amazing Grace. Also joining the day’s events were Lynda Bird Johnson Robb, daughter of Lyndon Johnson, the president who signed the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act, and Caroline Kennedy, daughter of John F Kennedy.

Twitter Anti Abuse Campaign

Twitter has taken the first steps to counter abuse on the networking sight. The company has unveiled a “report tweet” button for users to instantly flag abusive messages after a campaign “Take Back Twitter” was launched for increased safety measures on the site.

The campaign came following several high-profile women were targeted in violent and sexually explicit messages. Feminist campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez received rape and death threats after successfully campaigning to put author Jane Austen on the £10 bank note. Stella Creasy, the Labour MP for Walthamstow in east London, was also targeted for defending Criado-Perez, and a number of female

journalists were sent bomb threats. Criado-Perez said of the new function: “It’s great that Twitter has listened. There are still issues: users have to agree for the report to be potentially shared with the harasser, and there are some boxes that could be auto-populated that aren’t. But overall, this is a fantastic first step.” Kim Graham, who started the Change.org petition for Twitter to beef-up protection measures, said the in-Tweet button was a welcome move forward: “I’m thrilled that Twitter has started making progress on this. Online bullying and harassment has been too common for too long, and this is a very welcome first step toward online safety for women.” She added: “There are always improvements that can be made, but this proves that if we speak up together we can really

have an impact.” Following the abuse, Twitter UK’s general manager Tony Wang apologised to the women. Three people were arrested in connection with the threats and Scotland Yard’s e-crime unit report-

ed it was investigating eight people on the site for abuse. More than 120,000 people signed a petition urging Twitter to implement tighter processes to protect its users. The site has since clarified its rules on abusive behaviour and

brought in extra staff to deal with trolls. The in-Tweet button is available across iPhone, Android and Twitter.com, and allows users to flag individual tweets rather than go through its Help Centre.

T

he SAS has launched an investigation into how claims that it was involved in the death of Princess Diana’s were made public. Earlier this month, an SAS sniper accused the service of assassinating Diana in 1997, and then covering up its actions, sparking a fresh round of conspiracy theories.

Military chiefs are now apparently investigating how the claim came to be made public amidst fears it could damage the reputation of the SAS. The allegation that the service helped to kill Diana and her lover Dodi Al Fayed in a car crash in Paris was made in a letter linked to the trial of former sniper Danny Nightingale. The document was written by the mother-in-law of ‘Soldier N’, Nightingale’s housemate, in September 2011 and sent to military prosecutors. It came to the attention of the Metropolitan Police this month, and officers are now examining the information to see whether there is anything which merits investigation. But Army bosses are said to be angry that the SAS has been dragged in to the controversy over Diana’s death, which has continued for more than a decade despite the official finding that the death was an accident. A source close to General Sir Peter Wall, head of the Army said that the incident was ‘the most embarrassing and potentially damaging event in the regiment’s 70-year history’. The SAS is supposed to operate in secrecy, so any public discussion of the unit’s activities is likely to be poorly received by top brass.

SAS Involved in Diana’s Death Allegations

In addition, officials are said to be investigating how Soldier N was handled around the time he made the allegation about Diana in a conversation with his wife. ‘This whole mess was all entirely preventable,’ a source told the Express. ‘All the warning signs were there but were ignored. Instead of dealing with Soldier N’s family issues he was sent to Afghanistan for six months. This is

a problem of the SAS’s own making.’ The letter containing the claim - which was censored to remove all explicit references to the SAS was written by Soldier N’s motherin-law, who claimed that he had threatened his wife during an acrimonious break-up. ‘He also told her that it was the XXX who arranged Princess Diana’s death and that has been covered

up,’ it read. Dodi’s father, Mohammed Al Fayed, has called for police to investigate the new evidence fully, while the family of driver Henri Paul, who also died in the accident, said it supported their theory that the couple were murdered. Soldier N was jailed for illegally storing firearms at the house in Hereford which he shared with

Nightingale. He was convicted of illegally possessing a pistol which he allegedly took from Iraq as a ‘trophy’ and sentenced to two years in prison. The SAS has suffered a number of public-relations setbacks this year, including the deaths last month of three Territorial Army volunteers training to join the service.

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas are “taking some time apart” after 13 years of marriage. A spokeswoman for the star said: “Catherine and Michael are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage. There will be no further comment.” The couple married in 2000 and have two children.

She has previously said of the illness: “This is a disorder that affects millions of people and I am one of them. If my revelation of having bipolar two has encouraged one person to seek help, then it is worth it. There is no need to suffer silently and there is no shame in seeking help.” The couple met in 1998 at the Deauville Film Festival in France, got engaged on New Year’s Eve in 1999 and starred together in the 2000 Oscar-winning film Traffic. Zeta-Jones won her best supporting actress Oscar for her performance in 2002’s Chicago as vampish killer Velma Kelly. She was made a CBE in 2011. Douglas has won Oscars as a producer of the 1975 best picture film One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and as best actor in 1987’s Wall Street. Jenny Priestly, editor of Entertainment News, said: “We haven’t seen them as a couple on the red carpet together since April. Catherine didn’t support Michael when he was in Cannes back in May for the premiere of the feature film Behind The Candelabra which is very unusual, they’ve always been a very supportive couple. It’s important to stress that neither party has filed for divorce or legal separation at the moment.”

People magazine reported Douglas and Zeta-Jones - both Oscar winners and one of Hollywood’s most high-profile couples - have had holidays apart in recent months and appeared at red carpet events without each other. Douglas, 68, and Zeta-Jones, 43, have also both struggled with health issues. In April, the Swansea-born actress who shot to fame in Britain in the early 1990s playing freshfaced Mariette Larkin in the television adaptation of HE Bates’ The Darling Buds Of May, said she was seeking help for type two bipolar disorder - her second known trip to a healthcare facility for the condition since 2011 when she sought treatment for what aides said was the stress of coping with Douglas’ advanced throat cancer diagnosis in 2010.

madonna tops rich List Baby

ACCOrDiNG to the Forbes rich list, Madonna is the world’s top-earning celebrity raking in an estimated £80m last year.

The pop star, 55, beat second-placed Steven Spielberg, £65m, to top spot, after her MDNA tour grossed more than £190m. Spielberg, who had a big hit last year with the film “Lincoln”, earned most of his income from his catalogue of past hits, such as “E.T.” and “Jurassic Park”. At joint third, with earnings of £60m, were “50 Shades of Grey” author E.L. James, radio shock jock Howard Stern and music and television producer Simon Cowell.

“Madonna’s success, at age 55, just goes to show the incredible power of a successful music career,” Forbes reporter Dorothy Pomerantz said. Forbes compiles its annual list of celebrity earnings using input from agents, managers and producers. The figures do not reflect tax deductions, agent fees or “the other expenses of being a celebrity”. Madonna’s top spot compares with her previous peak of £70m in 2009. But it falls short of the £105m taken in by Oprah Winfrey in the previous year, Forbes said. Talk show queen and media mogul

Winfrey took a big pay cut this year according to Forbes, falling to 13 on the list with earnings of £50m. Lady Gaga ranked 10th in the list, earning £51m. Others in the top 10 included TV host Glenn Beck, director Michael Bay of the “Transformers” franchise, and thriller novelist James Patterson. Patterson is now the best-selling author of all time, Forbes said. Both Spielberg and Bay also made last year’s top 10, though with significantly larger earnings. The full list of top-earning celebrities can be viewed at www.forbes.com.

CANADiAN singer Michael Buble has announced the birth of his first child. the 37-year-old singer posted a picture of himself with his new son, Noah, and his wife Luisana Lopilato on the social networking website instagram.

ers from across the world and tweeted: “Congrats to my good friends @michaelbuble @lulopilato on the birth of little baby Buble ! Soo exciting! can’t wait t meet the little one.” Buble’s eighth studio album, To Be Loved, is currently at number 10 in the UK charts after going straight in at number one in April. He married his Argentine wife, who could not speak English when they first met, in Buenos Aires, in March 2011. The 26-year-old first made her name as a lingerie model and in Argentine sitcoms and soap operas before starring in Buble’s video for his single Haven’t Met You Yet.

Washington Zoo announces panda Birth

“WE hAVE A CUB!!,” the Us National Zoo in Washington announced on twitter after Giant Panda Mei xiang’s baby was born at 5:32pm on Friday, two hours after her waters broke. Fans posted on twitter to share their congratulations after she gave birth to a cub following a series of false pregnancies.

The zoo said the mother picked the cub up immediately and began cradling and caring for it. “I’m glued to the new panda cams and thrilled to hear the squeals, which appear healthy, of our new born cub,” said zoo director Dennis Kelly. “Our expansive panda team has worked tirelessly analysing hormones and behaviour since March, and as a result of their expertise and our collaboration with scientists from around the world we are celebrating this birth.” Excited fans who had been tracking Mei Xiang’s suspected pregnancy on the zoo’s Giant Panda Cam flocked to the live feed and responded under the hashtag

“cubwatch”. “Last year was so heartbreaking,” as one person tweeted, while another said: “Good luck, little Butterstick 2 !!!” Mei Xiang is expected to spend almost all of her time in her den for the next two weeks with her new cub, whose gender is as yet unknown.

DEBENhAMs has recalled thousands of steam irons as a “precautionary measure” after one of the products caught fire. the department store said one of its customers reported an electrical fault when using the iron, which caused the power cable to ignite: “A flame came from the cord area where it enters the iron,” a company spokesman said.

The potentially dangerous fault involves Debenhams’ Best Buy Value Steam Iron Model S13WH. More than 4,200 of the £12 irons were sold in stores in the UK and the Republic of Ireland or online between June 2011 and April 2013. People who bought one are urged to check the batch number on the rating plate, which is located on the heel at the back of the iron. Products with batch numbers MIC161031/0411, MIC161103/1111 and MIC161174/1212 should not be used but returned to store for a full refund. “If you cannot reach a Debenhams store, please contact our customer services department and dispose of the iron by taking it to a recycling dump or placing it in your domestic recycling bin,” the spokesman added. It is the second major recall issued by Debenhams in the last six weeks. Last month, the store asked customers who bought some of its electric blankets to return them after it found a possible electrical fault.

Steam iron recall

In September, Mei Xiang gave birth to a female cub, but it died six days later from liver damage due to underdeveloped lungs. She had five consecutive false pregnancies from 2007 to 2012. Her first cub, Tai Shan, was born in July 2005 as a result of artificial insemination. It now lives at the Bifengxia Panda Base in Ya’an, China.

Mei Xiang was artificially inseminated twice in March after unsuccessful attempts to breed her naturally with the US National Zoo’s male giant panda, Tian Tian. During a first procedure, she was artificially inseminated with fresh semen collected from Tian Tian and frozen samples collected in 2003. She was also inseminated during a

second procedure with Tian Tian’s 2003 frozen samples and frozen semen from the San Diego Zoo’s male giant panda, Gao Gao, collected that same year. The US National Zoo said scientists will perform a paternity analysis in the coming weeks to determine which male panda sired the new cub.

appearances on programmes such as Big Night Out and Sunday Night At The London Palladium. They starred at a Royal Variety Performance in 1962. ‘Do you speak French?’ asked the Queen. ‘No, Your Worship,’ said Bernie. ‘I have enough problems speaking English proper.’ In 1963 they starred alongside Frankie Howerd and Tommy Cooper in film The Cool Mikado. In 1964 they performed a sketch alongside the Beatles and were given their own ITV comedy series in 1966. Mike attended the City of Oxford School and won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied the clarinet. During the war he served in the Merchant Navy despite being underage. He received a medical discharge after which he enlisted in the Canadian Legion as a musician. Born Mike and Bernie Weinstein in the 1930s, the brothers adopted the stage name Winters in the early 1950s. They found work entertaining the troops abroad, performing in Vienna, Ulster and the Gulf. The brothers continued their act into the 1970s but split acrimoniously in 1978 after which Bernie launched a

solo career with a new partner - a giant St. Bernard dog named Schnorbitz. Mike moved to Florida where he worked with boxing manager Angelo Dundee and hosted charity nights and black-tie boxing events. He also produced and appeared in the first British pantomime staged in Florida. The brothers reconciled in the late 1980s but never worked together again. Bernie died from cancer aged 58, in 1991.

In fact there were times when he couldn’t believe just how incredible his life really was. Mike did a lot of work for charity running a TV stars team and enjoyed that very much. He was also a published author and writing gave him a great deal of pleasure.’ The brothers first hit Britain’s screens in 1955, and made regular

Pinolere Or many Europeans september heralds the end of summer but here in tenerife, the weather is still fantastic. After the scorching heatwaves of August, brought on by the odd sirocco, a wind that originates in the sahara, that makes the south of tenerife sizzle in soaring temperatures in the mid to high 30s, the haziness of the summer calimas has mostly cleared and september is idyllic. Average temperatures in the south are a pleasant 25C while the north of the island will be around 22C, with lows of 18C. Don’t forget these are shade temperatures and once in full sunshine, which is where most holidaymakers will be, the reality is often significantly hotter.

September Highlights There are plenty of local fiestas to enjoy across the whole of the island and one of the largest is in La Laguna where there is a month long event to celebrate Santísimo Cristo. During this

OVEr 4,000 people, some dressed in superhero costumes, took part in America’s inaugural version of spain’s famous running of the bull’s festival. Adrenaline junkies, many waving red flags, dodged 1,000lb bulls as they ran down a dirt track in rural Virginia for the Great Bull run.

It was the first stage of what promoters say will be a national, 10-city bull-running tour based on the annual stampede in Pamplona. “I just didn’t want to die, to get trampled by bulls and die,” said Cat Jones, 22, who travelled from New York City for the run. “It was a rush...a shot of adrenalin,” she said. The first six runs had about 500 runners each, chased by 12 bulls, and the last featured 24 bulls chasing 700 runners. Around 8,000 people came to watch the stampede, said Great Bull Run co-founder Rob Dickens. Every participant had to sign a legal disclaimer before taking part in the event at Virginia Motorsport Park, a drag strip south of Richmond. Mr Dickens said it was “doing something dangerous and living to tell the tale” that attracted participants. Two runners were taken to

hospital with concussion. Animal rights groups, such as PETA, criticised the event, saying it puts stress on the bulls. But the organisers said no bulls were harmed.

The next Great Bull Run is scheduled for October 19 in Atlanta. Other cities on the nationwide tour include Houston, Tampa and Los Angeles. The event had a further

Spanish twist when 50,000 tomatoes were used in a massive food fight in the Tomato Royale, in homage to La Tomatina held every August in the town of Bunol, near Valencia.

disoriented dolphin returned to Sea

A DOLPhiN which was photographed playing in the water in the river Dee in North Wales has been returned to the ocean. it is believed the animal - initially named “Dave” by rescuers but re-named “Davina” after it was identified as being female - was chasing fish upstream when she got disoriented, 32km (20 miles) inland.

The dolphin was first spotted by the public in Connah’s Quay docks in Flintshire, North Wales, but then swam further up river to Saltney, near Chester, Cheshire. Flint coastguards then found the animal stranded on a sandbank, hauled it onto their boat and took it back to deeper water. RNLI lifeboat operations manager Alan Forrester said a volunteer crew used a

stretcher to transfer Davina to the lifeboat. Speaking before the release, he said: “The dolphin is a fair size so we’ll go at a very slow pace until we reach deeper waters, where we will be met by the Rhyl all-weather RNLI lifeboat. Mr Forrester added: “It’s been a busy summer for the crew across Wales, but this is certainly one of our more unusual rescues.” Davina was released around the North Rhyl flats.

Ads To Make You Mad Marvel Phase 2 Latest!! Men (Or Women)!

Watching Spanish TV the other day I came across a commercial featuring a kid who, for the duration of the ad repeatedly screams “palo”, in English-stick, into the camera whilst waving, you guessed it- a stick!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iECvW fs5ncA&feature=youtube_gdata_player The ad is for the still lemonade beverage “Limon y Nada”, which I enjoy, but every time I see the ad it makes me want to throw my TV -or even better, the kid- off the nearest balcony. Apparently child homicide is generally frowned upon, so instead I’ve poured my energy into this list of some of the world’s most annoying TV commercials..... 1) Nothing compares to the awfulness that is the “Go Compare” opera singer, a

fact that the comparison website eventually embraced- by changing the angle of their commercials to feature various famous people including Professor Stephen Hawking, trying to kill the annoying tenor off!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_9QFvhQWo&feature=youtube_gdata_player 2) Duff Duffy Check out cool artist for about 1 minuteDuffy, in this cringeworthy Diet Coke ad from 2009!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgZVlqSdGI&feature=youtube_gdata_player One YouTube comment said: “Sounds like Minnie Mouse on helium”!! 3) Slamming the Gates of comedy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11NOb lvuEpU&feature=youtube_gdata_player Is this meant to be funny? Seinfeld leaves his comedy genius at home and Bill Gates? The only thing funny about him is his budget haircut! 4) Inevitably awful!! Brad Pitt’s Chanel ad is so pompous and nonsensical (he sounds like his stoner character from “True Romance”) it’s prompted dozens of parodies and mickey-takes, check out this hilarious version from the “Conan O Brien”, show. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=_6sw_-ewTNM&feature=youtube_ gdata_player 5) Playstation nightmare http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ourqvi 6I9KE&feature=youtube_gdata_player It’s not that this ad for playstation 3 is what you’d call that bad, it’s just downright TERRIFYING!! Sweet dreams!!

‘”Guardians” get their Rocket Man

It looks like Hangover heart-throb Bradley Cooper is the latest A-list star to be linked to the upcoming “Guardians of the Galaxy”, a key component in Marvel/Disney’s Phase 2 of their movie adaptations of Marvel Comic’s back catalogue-Phase 1 of course culminated in the mega blockbuster “Avengers Assemble”. Cooper is in talks to voice the character Rocket Raccoon-one of the quirkier characters- literally a talking space raccoon with a fondness for enormous firearms!! I’m assuming it will be voice only as I can’t imagine they will be asking him to dress up in a raccoon costume! If he accepts the offer, that will be all the core cast actors in place, Vin Diesel recently accepted the role of Groot, essentially a walking tree so that will also most likely be voice and motion capture. Other new signings of note include Glenn Close as Nova Prime, Benicio Del Toro as The Collector and ex Doctor Who companion Karen Gillan as Nebula.

let Witch in the Avengers sequel, due in 2015. Writer director Joss Whedon was said to be pursuing Saiorse Ronan but was turned down, leading him to offer the role to Olsen, who will act alongside KickAss star Aaron Taylor Johnson as her brother Quicksilver. As I’ve already reported we will get an alternative look at these 2 characters before Avengers 2 as they will also feature in X-MenDays of Future Past. The fact that they are the offspring of Magneto means that Marvel/ Disney need to “play nice” with Fox who own the movie rights to X-Men, and share the characters. The X-Men sequel have cast Evan Peters (American Horror Story) as The Flash-like Quicksilver but recently announced that his sister wouldn’t feature after all.

Avengers 2 gets their Scarlet Witch Respected indie star and sister of the Olsen twins- Elizabeth Olsen looks set to star as Scar-

Fans Not Bats About Ben

It seems that comic book fans have long memories and have not forgiven Ben for his first attempt at playing a superhero, the less than well received “Daredevil”. Twitter went wild with outraged tweets and many rabid fans went even further by delivering petitions to Warner Brothers door demanding the role be recast!! Personally I say give him a chance-”Daredevil” and “Gigli” were a long time ago, he’s now a respected actor and director, he’s also the right age to play the older weathered caped crusader that the Internet has been buzzing about- but most importantly-he’s certainly got the chin for it!

The Lone Ranger Showing daily at 15:30 hr - 149 min Action | Adventure Rated 12A Starring Johnny Depp - Tonto Armie Hammer - John Reid (Lone Ranger)

Tel: 922 713 858

In the 1930s, an elderly Tonto tells a young boy the tale of John Reid, the Lone Ranger. An idealistic lawyer, he rides with his brother and fellow Texas Rangers in pursuit of the notorious Butch Cavendish. Ambushed by the outlaw and left for dead, John Reid is rescued by the renegade Comanche, Tonto.

It seems not a day goes by without further speculation and rumours about the 2015 sequel to “Man of Steel”, known tentatively as “Superman vs Batman”, but last weekend Warner Brothers ended all

the talk of whether Christian Bale would return, as well as dash the hopes of many actors from A-list to unknown, by announcing they have cast Ben Affleck as the new Bats-to roars of disapproval from Batfans!!

ACCOrDiNG to a new study by comparison site uswitch, nearly one in 10 children has a mobile phone by the time they are five years old. On average, youngsters are bought their first handset at the age of 11, soon after starting secondary school. however, some 9% of parents said they bought their children a phone when they were five.

The study also found that mums and dads spend an average £125 on their children’s gadgets - and around £246 on their own mobiles. But despite the cost, 42% said they did not pay close attention to their children’s phone bills. Only a quarter capped their youngster’s contracts, while just 3% said they disabled the data function on their phones so that they could only be used for making calls or sending text messages. Children spend an average £11 per month on their mobiles - less than parents who spend £19. However, more than one in 10 (11%) of youngsters spends more than their parents, the research showed. The study - of 1,420 parents with children aged under 16 - also revealed that parents were likely to spend more money on their first child’s phone and bills than on those of any younger siblings. Ernest Doku, a telecoms expert at uSwitch.com, said: “As well as arming kids with

mobiles for emergencies and peace of mind, I’d imagine that many parents have bought their kids smartphones just to stop them commandeering their own when bored.” He suggested parents cap their children’s mobile bills, adding: “Make sure that when they’re at home, your kids are browsing the web using wi-fi instead of consuming data by connecting to the internet via 3G or 4G.” While there’s a wealth of super cheap Android phones out there that could be

considered kid-friendly (in as much as it wouldn’t be a financial disaster if they were lost or broken) these handsets still provide access to the web and open up all manner of, often unwanted (by parents at least), communication channels. OwnFone thinks it has the ideal solution with the 1stFone. The 1stFone has no access to the internet or text messaging and instead features a simple user interface with which to make calls to relatives or the emergency services.

SHarPLeS in SeSSiOn By John Sharples

Bugs that Bug us

COCKrOAChEs have been on this earth for millions of years. they were here long before we entered into this world and they will be long after we have finished destroying the habitats of the species that roam the planet.

Cockroaches are not welcome guests in our homes and the sight of one sends people squealing into a corner. Getting rid of cockroaches’ isn’t easy and often involves chemicals that fill the air with a pungent smell. Well, you don´t have to fill your home with chemicals in order to get rid of them. There are far cleaner and cheaper ways of doing it! You can make a mix of borax and sugar (any type). Mix it together in equal parts and apply it along cracks, under cabinets, under the sink and anywhere else you’ve seen cockroaches scuttling around. Reapply it as needed until they are all gone. The cockroaches eat the mix because they love the sugar. Once eaten, the borax damages their digestive system and their outer skeleton which results in death. It works in the same way as borax found in commercial products, but costs much less. It could take a couple of weeks before you start to see a decline, but it works.

tEChNOLOGy has gone mad. samsung will be releasing its new piece of “must have” equipment in the next few days. it’s a smart Watch.

Apparently, it can be used as a mobile phone and a camera. If you already have a phone, which incorporates a camera and a clock, why

would you need a

smart watch? Well, they must think there will be a market for it as Apple and Sony are working on something similar. Now, if they could just perfect a transporter, we could all get Scotty to beam us up!

miley goes mucky on mtv

It is not a pet friendly solution, so keep it out of their reach and don’t use it willy nilly. Put it in places that your pet can’t get to. Borax loses some of its effectiveness when it is wet so keep it dry and store in a dry place. Another Cockroach killer is fabric softener and water. Mix 3 parts fabric conditioner to one part water and put it in a spray dispenser. Dead cockroach!

playing Ketchup

If you are a kind soul and you don’t want to kill them but just want to keep them away, use your old ground coffee leftovers. They don´t like them and steer clear from it. Also, many people have problems with ants at this time of the year. If you put a jar of jam or honey in the garden, they won’t need to come inside your house all summer, they will munch their way through it without bothering you.

sNUGBUrys ice Cream shop started in the mid-eighties in a farmhouse in Cheshire. they have become very famous for their wonderful ice creams which include flavours such as Crème Brule, Fan-nutty tastic, strawberries and Pimms, turkish delight, Damson and sloe gin and many more. Over the years, however,

thE famous tomato throwing festival in the town of Penol in spain will no longer be free to enter. the crazy event costs a few million euros to run and the town is said to be strapped for cash, like most towns in spain. the event, known as the

“tomatina”, must be more controlled according to the mayor.

I don’t get the point of this festival at all. I don’t think I would like a tomato whanging at my face thank you very much. What a waste of good food too. Mind you, it is a better idea than torturing bulls and frightening the poor things to death.

it seems that the MtV awards manage to offend half of Americans every year. this year, as Miley Cyrus went almost “naked” people headed to the internet and their telephones to complain.

Come on people. Don´t you know that Sex and Rock and Roll go hand in hand. I can’t personally see what all the fuss was about. She waggled her backside, bent over and wore a flesh coloured bikini. I wish I could get as much publicity for doing the same thing. If I did it, they would probably get the dog catcher out!

money for nothing

E

VEryBODy wants your money. Mum had a problem with her tV. For some reason, if she wanted to keep a certain channel, she had to re-tune her television set.

Mum isn’t very technical. She had to call a man in to do a job that takes under a minute and he only came from down the road. He charged her 35 pounds. What a disgrace. She thinks he is marvellous because she now has more channels. I despair!

they have become famous for something else too. They create giant straw sculptures on their farm, which is why I am writing about them today. This year sees the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. I can´t wait for the anniversary episode which will be featuring many people from the doctor’s past. Anyway, this year’s straw sculpture is a giant Dalek. I love it! It is made with six tons of straw and five tons of steel and is approximately 35 foot high. The Dalek has moving parts and audio too. The shop has also created a Da-Lick cone which will be sold in aid of cancer research.

thE British family has seen many changes in modern times and according to new research has shown that family pets are considered to be much-loved members. the findings from Ancestry.co.uk, the family history website, show 90% of pet owners think of their animal as part of the family.

A third (33%) of those even claims to prefer their pets to real life members of their family; one in six (15%) consider their pet more important than their cousin. Dog owners are the most keen

to make their pet a bona fide family member, with 16% choosing to include the animal in the 2011 Census. A number of these even listed their dog as their “son” on the official form. But this animal infatuation is no new phenomenon, with pets also

listed in the 1911 Census. Arthur and Elizabeth Delve from Smethwick found it fit to record the existence of their “faithful Irish terrier Biddy”. Biddy, it was noted, was a “magnificent watch and a demon on cats and vermin”. Another canine in the same Census is ‘Roger the Watchdog’ who lived in Dulwich. His journalist owner, James Little, listed his age at five

and a rather fitting profession of “looking after the house”. Paintings of pets were particularly popular in Victorian Britain; wealthy women were known to sit for pictures with perfectly groomed lap dogs. This trend persists today with one in 20 owners confessing they have commissioned a professional portrait of their animal. Many British people also leave

behind a more permanent token of affection. Nearly one in 10 (9%) of dog owners love the animal so much that they are planning on leaving money or assets to them in their will. :: Ancestry.co.uk commissioned ICM Research to question 2,000 UK adults aged 18 and over this month about attitudes towards pets. of these, 1,172 were pet owners.

gardening and Nature By Steve Andrews - aka Green Bard

A Tenerife Cactus And Succulent Garden Barrel cacti

Because of the subtropical weather we get here on Tenerife cacti and succulents are very easy to grow here all year around. A garden full of these exotic plants is simple to maintain and looks really interesting.

I remember seeing such a garden many years ago in Costa del Silencio where apart from a palm tree all the rest of the ground was filled with cacti and succulents of every description. There were barrel cacti, tall ones like you see in Westerns, prickly pears with flattened pads and even epiphytic orchid cacti growing up the tree trunk. The rosettes of aloes, agaves and aeonium species contrasted well. Once you have such a cactus garden planned out and planted there is not a lot you need to do except for occasional watering and maybe thinning the plants out at times or pruning those that have got too big. You don’t need to worry about frost

here so all the cacti and succulents that would be greenhouse or indoor plants in the UK can be grown in all their glory outside here. You can buy plants from gardening shops or get them as gifts from friends. I have even seen small ones on sale in the supermarket. There is a fantastic choice of cacti and succulent plants you can grow. The opuntias or prickly pears look good and they have edible fruit too, though you have to be very careful when picking and preparing these. There

Prickly Pears

are two main common species that can be found on the semi-desert scrubland of the island. Opuntia ficus-barbarica has reddishorange flowers and short spines. Its fruit have lots of groups of these tiny prickles on them O.dillenii has much longer spines yellow flowers and reddish-purple fruits with smooth skins apart from the groups of protective glochids (the name for the minute spines).. Barrel cacti are aptly named and can get very big with time. They tend to form groups that grow from offsets.

Aeoniums

Facts About The Opuntia Cacti

T

he Opuntia or prickly pear cacti get their scientific name from the Ancient Greek city of Opus where it was reported by Theophrastus that a plant grew that could be reproduced by planting the leaf pads.

The fruits of the opuntias are known as prickly pears or cactus fruit and, after the spines have been carefully removed, can

be eaten raw or made into jam, jellies, icecream or other desserts. The green pads oh these cacti are also edible and nutritious if the protective spines are taken care of. They are known as “nopales” and are an important part of Mexican cuisine. Prickly pear cacti have often been cultivated for cochineal production. The red dye is made from the crushed bodies of a scale insect that lives on the cacti.

Echinocactus grusonii is a good example of this type of cactus and a very large one could be as much as a metre wide. An interesting cactus to grow is Epostoa lanata because this species gets covered in white wooly hairs. With time it can grow very tall indeed but looks great even when small. Pachycereus pringlei is another very tall cactus. It can reach as much as 15 metres in height with a really massive trunk with 11-15 ribs and covered in spines. Orchid cacti (Epiphyllum species) are epiphytic by nature and normally would grow in trees or on rocky cliffs. They can be grown up tree trunks and on walls where they cling by their roots. These cacti have massive colourful flowers in red, white and other shades. The various types of orchid cacti have flattened fleshy stems and are not covered in prickles. They are often grown as houseplants but here on Tenerife they can be grown well outdoors. The Moonlight or Queen of the Night (Selenicereus species) are also epiphytes and will cling on to whatever they are rambling over with the aid of their aerial roots. These cacti have the usual protection of spines all along their stems and like the orchid cacti they have massive blooms. They are usually white and open

only at night when they emit a gorgeous fragrance to attract moths. Turning to the succulents you could grow, the Aloe vera is an obvious choice with its large rosettes of grayish-green fleshy leaves and its tall spikes of yellow flowers. This succulent provides a very useful gel that can be used to help heal sunburn. The spurge or Euphorbia genus is a large one with many succulent and cactiform species, including the cardón or Canary Island spurge (E. canariensis) which grows wild here and is often thought to be a cactus but it is not one. The crown of thorns (E.milii) is a popular succulent here that is often grown in flower beds. It has very spiny succulent stems, small oval leaves and flowers with bright red bracts around them. Then there are the Bryophyllum species. B. daigremontianum which is known as the mother of thousands, and B. tubiflorum are very commonly grown succulents that produce hundreds of tiny plantlets along their leaves. These drop off and root wherever they fall, and in fact they already have roots on them when they are still on the parent plant. The bryophyllums grow to a metre or more in height and have clusters of attractive bell-shaped orange-pink flowers. These are plants that are exceedingly easy to grow and require little care apart from watering to keep them in their best condition. No succulent garden should be without some houseleek or Aeonium varieties and they even grow on roof-tops. So many plants to choose from for your cactus and succulent garden!

Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.

He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

James Wannerton, a systems analyst from Blackpool, can taste words due to a neurological condition called synaesthesia, and the 54-yearold has now completed a “flavour map” of the Tube, showing what each station tastes like. These range from the good – roast lamb and fruit cake - to the bad - hairspray. Mr Wannerton told the Telegraph that the map was the realisation of a 49-year quest, having first noticed as a child each station created a distinct taste when

travelling to school. He told the newspaper: “It is incredibly consistent. These tastes and textures never change. All I did was traverse the underground lines. It was very natural and involuntary; when the taste popped up I made a note of it.” Mr Wannerton, President of the UK Synaesthesia Association, describes his experience of the condition on his website: “I get these tastes whenever I verbalise a written word or hear a spoken one - even in my dreams. I get taste after taste after taste,

one after another. It could, if I let it, take over completely, causing a sort of sensory overload or slowdown. A little like I’ve been told a proper drug trip is to experience.” And his taste sensations do not stop at the Tube. He says: “I live in a house that tastes of mashed potato in a fruit gum town. My next door neighbours are a mix of yoghurt, jelly beans and a subtle hint of a waxy substance.” There are also the less palatable sides of life. “I have a friend whose wife tastes of vomit - I’ve never told them.”

PugH´S PantrY

paneer….

By Barry Pugh

Working with the lovely “Veggie” Bambi Dhami has inspired me to share with you all one of her favourites.. I know that she loves and adores Paneer cheese – so this one is going out to you. This great Indian cheese is really easy to make, extremely cheap and can be used in many recipes.

paneer and potato Curry

37

paneer Cheese ingredients:

2 litres Fresh whole milk 2-3 tbsp. lime/lemon juice

Method: Heat the milk in a heavy bottom pan at medium heat. let it come to a gentle boil and stay there for a minute. Reduce the heat and bring the milk to gentle boil. Add one tablespoon of juice and quickly stir it in. At this point, you will start to see small curdles in the milk. Add another tablespoon of juice and again stir it in. The curdles will increase. Add the last tablespoon of juice and

with this, you should be able to see a clear whey separating from the curdles, switch off the heat immediately at this point. line another pan with double layered cheesecloth. Make sure the cheesecloth is long enough to be bundled up and hung up later. Run the curdled mixture through the cloth which will collect. Wash the curdles, by running it through cold water to remove the lemon taste. Tie up the cheesecloth in a tight bundle and let it drain for about 30 minutes. Then place weight on the cheese to get it to be flatter and drain out extra moisture.

Vegetarian curries are much better for your health and your shopping bill, plus they’re quick and simple to make, perfect for a midweek meal. ingredients: 2 tbsp. olive oil 220g paneer, cubed 2 onions, finely sliced salt and black pepper 2 garlic cloves, crushed ½ - 1 tsp. chilli flakes 1 tbsp. mild curry powder 250g floury potatoes, peeled and cut into small cubes 200g tinned tomatoes 500ml vegetable stock (made from stock cube)

I generally place it between two cutting board and add heavy pot on top for 1-2 hour. You don’t want to add too much weight for too long as it can drain out way too much moisture from the cheese making it hard and crumbly. Wrap it and store it in the fridge for up to a week. But I certainly prefer to use it as early as possible.

Method:

Heat a saucepan or large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the oil and once hot fry the paneer for two minutes on each side, or until the cubes are coloured. Remove from the pan and set aside. Now add the onions with a pinch of salt and gently fry until goldenbrown. once golden, add the garlic, chilli flakes, curry powder and two tablespoons of water. Gently fry for a further two minutes over a low heat. Stir in the potato. Pour in the tomatoes and the stock, bring to a simmer, cover with a lid and simmer gently for 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are completely soft and the sauce has thickened. Meanwhile, cook the rice according to packet instructions. Add the paneer to the curry and stir through, making sure it is well coated in sauce. Serve with boiled rice.

new audi a8 debuts at frankfurt motor Show

thE new generation Audi A8 will makes its debut next month at the Frankfurt Motor show.

The body of the A8 is almost entirely aluminium and has been finessed by subtle resculpting of the bonnet, the single frame grille, the

front bumper and the lower edge of the headlight units. The rear of car features more redesigns including the LED tail lamps plus the bumper incorporates two rhomboid tail pipes. The new chrome elements and high gloss black window surrounds complete the look. The interior of the new Audi A8 is luxurious and lavishly trimmed, customers can choose from a new range of upholstery and inlays in new

garmin Head-up display Sat-nav

GArMiN has created a head-up sat-nav projector that can easily be fitted to cars. Let us consider how it works. the system incorporates a black rectangular box which is somewhat larger than a traditional sat-nav. this is placed on the dashboard close to the windscreen so it can project images onto either a transparent film on the glass or a reflector lens.

The latter is a plastic surface that is mounted vertically to the unit. The projector, however, does not contain mapping data so this comes via smartphone software such as Garmin StreetPilot for the iPhone or NAVIGON for iP-

hone, Android, or Windows 8. The mobile phone must therefore be connected to the projector via Bluetooth. The motorist then selects a destination from the phone so the head-up display can reveal which turn to take, which lane is suitable and the road’s speed limit, etc. It can also warn the motorist that safety cameras are nearby and that he/she is exceeding the legal limit. However, any audible instructions only come through the smartphone or - if this is connected to the stereo - through the vehicle’s speakers. Furthermore, the intensity of the head-up image varies according to the conditions so it is bright on a sunny day then dimmer at night. Power comes from the unit’s internal battery or the car’s power socket. The latter tends to take the form of a cigarette lighter.

Garmin HUD – Pros/Cons Garmin’s head-up display system has its pro/cons. Reasons to use it – according to its manufacturer – include that it presents the motorist with “futuristic looking guidance”. That is true, and having such a device on the dashboard is certainly a talking point. Secondly, the manufacturer has explained that the motorist does not have to take his/her “eyes off the road” as the image is in the line of sight. Again, this is true but is that not the case with a traditional, windscreen mounted, sat-nav? Furthermore, the company says the system can “reduce the power consumption” of mobile phones as the screens can be switched-off while the navigation software is operating. Again, true. But despite these advantages some people might prefer one of the company’s traditional alternatives. Why? Because these are single units that contain the maps so they do not rely on smartphones/external software. Some of these devices are smaller too, so they take-up less space in the car while not in use. There is also no need to fiddle with Bluetooth which some people find confusing/tedious. But still, a head-up display - clever.

tivates four of its eight cylinders to give priority to fuel economy. The most efficient diesel engine is the 3.0 TDI, which returns up to 47.9 mpg, all engines satisfy the Euro 6 standard, helped by frictionreducing measures which reduce fuel consumption by as much as 10 per cent.

Audi A8 Hybrid colour schemes. Additions include the woods Fine grain poplar brown-silver and Fine grain ash brown-gold natural as well as the leather Unikat, which is particularly naturallooking, soft and breathable. Options available include front seats with ventilation and massage settings, relaxation seats with powered footrests, electrically adjustable, individual rear seats, a continuous, leather-covered centre console and powerassisted door closure. The

Audi exclusive personalisation range offers additional individualisation options for those that want to add their own stamp. There is a choice of seven petrol and TDI engines, the majority of which have been revised to improve performance and efficiency. Paired with quattro all-wheel drive, the 4.0 TFSI now powers the Audi A8 from 0 to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds, but under partial load the Audi cylinder on demand (COD) system deac-

You can opt for the Audi A8 hybrid which combines a 2.0 TFSI engine and electric motor to produce a system output of 245PS and system torque of 480 Nm. The lithium-ion battery in the rear enables purely electric driving at up to 62 mph with a range of approximately 1.9 miles. The A8 hybrid returns up to 44.8mpg and emits 147g/km of CO2 emissions. Audi connect is available as a supplement to MMI navigation plus. It uses an integrated UMTS module to connect the new A8 to the Internet. Passengers can surf and e-mail freely via a WLAN hotspot. For the driver, the system delivers online services such as online traffic information, Google Earth, Google Street View and online news, to the car. The audio highlights are the Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System and the Rear Seat Entertainment system which includes two displays, Bluetooth headphones and a DVD player.

front the show. And in the first of an exciting range of new changes for the 10th series, hopefuls will - for the first time ever - have to tackle two sets of auditions. To win over the nation, they first have to face our four feisty judges eyeball to eyeball in an intimate audition room. If they succeed in impressing one-on-one they then secure a spot on stage at the second audition where they will confront an audience of 4,000 at Wembley Arena. Here they will have to perform once more to prove they can also impress an audience before securing a coveted place at Boot camp.

Doc Martin ITv 1 - 21:00 - 22:00 Wedding bells are ringing for the Doc and Louisa. But will the marriage finally go ahead? the Doc is irritated by PC Penhale, who wrongly presumes he is best man, plus Louisa is late... the reverend has his doubts as to whether she will turn up, putting Martin on edge. But she does, looking beautiful and at long last they tie the knot. Later at the wedding reception Martin is even more irritated by the swarms of villagers who have turned up to celebrate; he thought it was going to be a small wedding. Louisa gets defensive; she thinks it is lovely that the villagers have turned up to wish them well. They try to sneak off early from the

party, but Bert reveals he is driving them to a secret location for their wedding night. Louisa is thrilled thinking that Martin has arranged the surprise. But it is actually a present to them from the villagers. Ruth offers to look after baby James Henry for the night. The honeymoon lodge is in the middle of nowhere and is perfect, apart from Bert driving off with their suitcases. They light a fire and settle down to enjoy a glass of champagne, but smoke fills the room, the chimney is blocked. They manage to put the fire out, but the room is ruined. Martin charges off into the night to find some help; Louisa teeters behind him in her wedding dress and heels, trying to keep up.

“PEACE OF MIND” From IBERIAN - Why even think About our oWn FunerAl ??? because, like it or not, one certainty in life is, we are all going to die. but normally none of us know how, when or where death will occur.

Just think

1. Would your family or friends know who to contact in first place? 2. Could they cope with the language barrier? 3. Could they cope with all the paperwork and legalities? 4. Would funds be readily available to cover all costs? 5. Family could be thousands of miles away 6. Would they have any control over costs at a time of grief?

A guArAnteed prepAid FunerAl plAn With iberiAn FunerAl plAns gives “peACe oF mind” For liFe’s FinAl event.

beneFits inClude:

1. Funeral costs are fixed - no matter how long you live. 2. no health or age restrictions - unlike some insurances. 3. removes pressure from loved ones at a time of stress 4. ITv 1 - 21:00 - 22:00 the series begins at a party for the launch of Buchan’s first book: ‘A history of Murder in Whitechapel’. the team attend for moral support and among the other guests of avid crime fans is a little old lady. she makes pointed comments to the team which sour the evening somewhat, especially when she reminds Chandler that he has yet to make a conviction – a very sore point. Chandler and Miles are called to investigate a bizarre murder after a vagrant is slowly crushed to death by stones. The killer’s macabre methods are investigated by the team, and as things unravel to

45

reveal a more ominous possibility, they consider a sinister 16th century precedent. Shortly after the first murder a second body is found, again the victim of a grotesque death. Why such horrific executions? Could it be that someone is killing witches in Whitechapel? As the mania of a witchhunt takes hold, Chandler is determined to catch the murderer. But the team’s progress is impeded as links to 20th Century espionage attract attention from the security services. Buchan’s archive research helps shed light on a conspiracy which goes far wider than they first thought. Old scores are settled as dark forces are at play in Whitechapel.

two Year Ban ashes Wee for Skater Scandal

thE English Cricket Board (ECB) have launched an investigation after team spinner Graeme swann appeared to confirm England players urinated on the Oval pitch after their Ashes win at the weekend.

OLyMPiC short track medallist simon Cho, has been banned for two years after he admitted he tampered with the skates of a Canadian rival.

The suspension runs until to October 4, 2014, and means that Cho will not be eligible to compete at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Cho, a rising star of US ice skating, confessed in October last year that he had sabotaged the skates of Canada’s Olivier Jean during the 2011 World Team Championship. He used a blade bender which

is normally used to make sure a skater’s blade follows the proper radius in short track. Cho says he said he did it at the direction of former short track national coach Jae Su Chun. He said the coach was angry at the Canadians and convinced they had helped another team to eliminate the Americans. Chun has always denied that he had any role in the tampering. But the International Skating Union (ISU) suspended him for two years, saying he also violated the code of ethics. His suspension runs until August 25, 2015.

Cho called his tampering the “biggest mistake of my life”. “I always knew it was wrong that day,” he said last October. “I hope that I can make up for my mistake and continue to skate in the future.” Cho won a relay bronze medal at the Vancouver Games and an individual world championship in 2011. US Speedskating said in a statement that it “respects the findings of the ISU”. The ruling came on the same day the US short track team was picked for the upcoming World Cup season.

Swann told The Sun newspaper he thought some members of the team may have answered the call of nature “once or twice” as they celebrated their victory on the pitch: “We did go out to the middle of the pitch, all the lads, drinking beers, singing a few songs and enjoying each other’s company,” Swann said. “I think the call of nature might have come once or twice, but it was nothing untoward. It was midnight, a private celebration in the middle of the pitch and the ground was dark,” he added. A row has been growing after Australian journalists claim they spotted three England players spending a penny on the pitch after

the team returned to the field after their 3-0 series win over Australia. They reportedly saw bowlers James Anderson and Stuart Broad, and batsmen Kevin Pietersen relieve themselves while the rest of the team cheered. Surrey County Cricket Club chief executive Richard Gould told The Sun: “We’ve spoken to the ECB and they say they will be looking into the matter. We would be very disappointed if it turns out they did urinate on the pitch.” The final Test at The Oval ended in controversy; with the umpires withdraw he players for bad light ending an intriguing contest which saw England needing just 21 runs for victory.

new guidelines for football Hooligans fleetwood triumph

sPOrts prosecutor Nick hawkins said football fans who abuse players or fellow supporters online could be prosecuted under new guidelines for tackling hooliganism. Criminal abuse inside as well as outside sports grounds would be dealt with in the run-up to England’s World Cup qualifiers in the autumn.

“Our legal guidance on communications sent by social media clearly sets out how we will approach the abuse of players or fellow supporters online and I’m glad to say we have the full support of the Football Association and the Professional Footballers’ Association in this field.” He said. New guidance issued by the Crown Prosecution Service

(CPS) earlier this year said that communications that included threats of violence or damage to property; specifically targeted individuals, or that may breach a court order should be “prosecuted robustly”. Others that were “grossly offensive, indecent, obscene or false” may not reach the criminal threshold. The policy, issued by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) also deals specifically with

homophobic chanting. It said: “As well as tackling violence, disorder and criminal damage we will deal robustly with offences of racist and homophobic and discriminatory chanting and abuse and other types of hate crime.” Football Banning Orders currently bar fans from travelling to matches for a minimum of three years. Mr Hawkins said pitch invasions and the use of flares or fireworks could also result in prosecution.

ENGLAND’s tommy Fleetwood won his first European tour title after a play-off with scotland’s stephen Gallacher and Argentina’s ricardo Gonzalez in the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.

Gallacher looked out of contention when he ran up a triple-bogey seven on the 11th in a rollercoaster final round, but bounced back with birdies at the 14th and 16th and then holed from 15 feet for an eagle on the last. That set the clubhouse target at 18 under par and Fleetwood matched it thanks to an eagle on the 16th and birdie on the last, with playing partner Gonzalez making birdies on the

16th and 18th after almost holing his bunker shot on the last for a winning eagle. The players returned to the par five 18th for the play-off and Gallacher was eliminated when he failed to get up and down from a

greenside bunker, missing a birdie putt from seven feet. Gonzalez then three-putted from just over the back of the green and that left Fleetwood to hole from three feet for a winning birdie and the first prize of 272,272 Euros.

The 47-year-old was making his debut as a boxing promoter, when he confessed to still being an alcoholic and drug user.

“I’m a bad guy sometimes. I did a lot of bad things and I want to be forgiven,” he said at the conference aired on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights. “I wanna change my life; I wanna live a different life now. I wanna live my sober life. I don’t wanna die. I’m on the verge of dying because I’m a vicious alcoholic. “I haven’t drank or took drugs in six days, and for me that’s a miracle. I’ve been lying to everybody else that think I was sober, but I’m not. This is my sixth day. I’m

Tottenham Spending To Surpass £100M As Bale Saga Draws To Conclusion

Tottenham are poised to eclipse Manchester City as the summer’s big spenders as Gareth Bale finally nears the exit.

Bale is on the verge of completing his protracted move to Real Madrid for a world-record £86m fee but Spurs boss

Andre Villas-Boas is closing in on three transfer targets to collectively strengthen his squad. Deals are in place for Roma forward Erik Lamela and Steaua Bucharest centre-back Vlad Chiriches, who have both arrived in London ahead of medicals, while chairman Daniel Levy is in talks with

Ajax over a £9m move for Christian Eriksen. Lamela’s arrival, for a fee rising to £30m, would see Tottenham break their transfer record for a third time this summer following the £17m and £26m outlays for Paulinho and Roberto Soldado, respectively.

Talk of the French firm’s interest in supplying F1 tyres next season gathered pace over recent weeks and during the Belgian GP weekend Director of Michelin’s Competition Department Pascal Couasnon said they were ready to open talks with the FIA. However, when asked about the chances of seeing Michelin return, Ecclestone told US Broadcaster Speed: “FOM and Pirelli have a contract.” Whilst that may be the case, Pirelli’s Paul Hembery

has admitted they are yet to agree a deal with the FIA, but Ecclestone does not see that as an issue. The 82-year-old F1 supremo also denied any of the 11 teams were pressing for Michelin to be allowed to supply tyres. “None of the teams who have spoken to me have said that,” he said. “All the teams who have spoken to me say they are very happy with Pirelli, and the problems they’ve had, they’re happy that they’ve dealt with them.”

But their overall spend during this window would surpass £100m, beating the figure of around £90m that Manuel Pellegrini has forked out at Manchester City. Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas has confirmed Gareth Bale’s move to Real Madrid could happen very very soon. There could be an acrimonious end to the Bale saga after Villas-Boas criticised the winger’s conduct with his next move still to be sealed. “He is involved in a big transfer to Real Madrid and, if it happens, we wish him all the best, but the fact that he hasn’t turned up is not the correct behaviour,” VillasBoas said after Bale missed a second day of training. “I gave the player the weekend off. Monday was a day off for the squad. It is up to the club now to decide if it’s

a fineable offence. I’ve given my opinion on it, it’s up to them to decide whether they act on it or not.” One player out of Spurs’ reach is Chelsea’s Juan Mata with Villas-Boas admitting he’s a fan of the midfielder. But the Portuguese coach believes Chelsea would be unwilling to strengthen the squad of a fellow top-four contender - meaning Spurs have turned their attention to Lamela and Eriksen. On Mata, Villas-Boas said: “Mata is a great player - player of the season last season, a very important player for Chelsea. “But Chelsea wouldn’t sell to Tottenham in any way, as they think we are title contenders. “They’re just not going to strengthen another team that, in their opinion, are rivals for the title.”

Cd tenerife Labour to a draw With Hercules

GOALs win games and CD tenerife never looked like scoring in this 0-0 home draw with hercules. With last seasons 25 goal hit man, Aridane, still injured coach Alvaro Cervera has hinted he might add another main striker to the squad before the transfer window slams shut on 2nd september.

There was a different look to the starting line up after the opening day defeat at Alcorcon, five changes were made but they didn’t have the desired effect. Spain under 19 international Salva Ruiz looked steady at left back and Aitor Sanz made little impact in the centre of the park but the attack was blunt, Suso returned with his speedy wing play but neither Loro nor new recruit Borja Perez did enough to test the visiting goalie. The turning point of the game should have been the dismissal of Hercules player Assulin just before half time for a crude tackle on Carlos Ruiz. He left with a red card in his face and a shove in the back from an angry team mate. Tenerife didn’t seize the initiative and frustrated the 8,981 home crowd. Cristo Martin showed urgency and invention as always in midfield but was guilty of a glaring miss after 30 minutes when he headed wide as the goal loomed large before him. In the second half Oscar Rico replaced Salva Ruiz but showed of

Cristo Martin his attacking flair. Chechu couldn’t make a difference when he came on for Suso but Aitor Sanz should have done better when flashing a shot past the Hercules post. Ayoze was given ten minutes, he needs a few goals to get him firing freely like he used to at B team level but Borja wasn’t going to unlock any chances for him. Sergio Aragoneses basked in the afternoon sun with Hercules look-

ing just as shot shy in front of his goal. Thankfully he hadn’t pulled up a deck chair when Eldin fed Sardinero late in the game, his shot could have stolen the points but Sergio made a great stop low down at his post. This Sunday it’s a 5pm away game at Mirandes, televised on TV Canarias, well pressed shirts, freshly starched shorts, and shooting boots will be essential to clock up the first win of the new season.

Away Point Prepares CD Marino For Home Launch

The new look CD Marino squad is knitting together well and showed their defensive qualities in a 0-0 draw at Las Zocas last Saturday. Now they want to treat their home fans to a few goals in this Sundays Tercera Division game against El Cotillo, kick off at noon and entry is just 8 euros.

Goalie Alberto and midfielder Aaron were up against last years team mate Rayco but honours were shared. Forwards Airam and Murci will be out to add goals to Marino’s solid defence in the Las Americas stadium to kick start a promotion campaign. This season there are 19 home games, at 8 euros each that would 152 euros but a basic season ticket is just 100 euros so if you want to save a third and pay up front for an exciting season of football, get yours on Sunday.

Vitolo Inks A lucrative Contract In Turkey

One of Tenerife’s most popular sons, midfield footballer Vitolo has landed a lucrative move to the Turkey Superleague. The former CD Tenerife captain has cut short his contract with Panathanaikos in the Greek Premier League to sign a three year deal worth 1.3 million euros a season.

The Tenerife legend has always had a strong bond with the Santa Cruz fans and was briefly linked with a return to the blue and white shirt in the summer but with such a great deal in the pipeline it’s hardly surprising he decided to make the move to Turkey. He won’t have to explain to passport control where he is from; Vitolo recently adorned his body with some bold tattoos proclaiming his love for his home team and island.

D

efending Us Open champion Andy Murray raced into the Us Open second round with a 6-2 6-4 6-3 win over Frenchman Michael Llodra.

The match only got underway at 10pm local time in New York on Wednesday- the third-latest start for a US open night session - after a four-hour rain suspension earlier in the day caused havoc with the schedule. But the third seed wasn’t hanging about and finished the match in double-quick time after 98 minutes of action on a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium. llodra, 33, is a serve-volleyer, and his attacking game could have caused Murray problems if the Scothad given in to first-night nerves. But Wimbledon champion Murray broke llodra in the first and seventh games of the opening set before slipping 0-3 down in the second set against a man he had defeated in all three of their previous meetings. The 26-year-old stopped the rot to put together five games in a row on his way to securing the second set. He was a break to the good for 2-1 against old school serve-and-volleyer llodra in the decider and went to match point after getting the better of a rally which started with his left-handed opponent sending over a cunning underarmed serve. Murray hit 34 winners against just five unforced errors while llodra committed 29 unforced errors. The British No 1 now goes on to face Argentina’s leonardo Mayer for a place in the last 32.
