MARTINI The martini is a cocktail made with gin and vermouth, and garnished with an olive or a lemon twist. Over the years, the martini has become one of the best-known mixed alcoholic beverages.
10 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE
Sometimes the term “martini” is used to refer to other mostly-hard-liquor cocktails such as Manhattan, Cosmopolitan, and ad hoc or local concoctions whose only commonality with the drink is the cocktail glass in which they are served. Some newer drinks include the word “martini” or the suffix “-tini” in the name (e.g., appletini, peach martini, chocolate martini, breakfast martini). These are so named because they are served in a cocktail glass. Generally containing vodka, they share little in common with the martini. A porn star martini is a variation of a vodka martini. The vodka is vanilla flavored, and is served with passion fruit juice, accompanied by a shot of Prosecco
HISTORY
The exact origin of the martini is unclear. The name may derive from the Martini brand of vermouth. Another popular theory suggests it evolved from a cocktail called the Martinez served sometime in the early 1860s at the Occidental Hotel in San Francisco, which people frequented before taking an evening ferry to the nearby town of Martinez, California. Alternatively, residents of Martinez say a bartender in their town created the drink, while another source indicates that the drink was named after the town. Indeed, a “Martinez Cocktail” was first described in Jerry Thomas’s 1887 edition of his Bartender’s Guide, How to Mix All Kinds of Plain and Fancy Drinks.

By 1922 the martini reached its most recognizable form in which London dry gin and dry vermouth are combined at a ratio of 2:1, stirred in a mixing glass with ice cubes, with the optional addition of orange or aromatic bitters, then strained into a chilled cocktail glass. Over time the generally expected garnish became the drinker’s choice of a green olive or a twist of lemon peel. A dry martini is made with little to no vermouth. Ordering a martini “extra dry” will result in even less or no vermouth added. By the Roaring Twenties, it became a common drink order. Over the course of the 20th century, the amount of vermouth steadily dropped. During the 1930s the ratio was 3:1 (gin to vermouth), and during the 1940s the ratio was 4:1. During the latter part of the 20th century, 5:1 or 6:1 dry martinis became considered the norm. A wet martini contains more vermouth; a 50-50 martini uses equal amounts of gin and vermouth. An upside-down or reverse martini has more vermouth than gin. A dirty martini contains a splash of olive brine or olive juice and is typically garnished with an olive. A perfect martini uses equal amounts of sweet and dry vermouth.
??? ?? ? Is martini hard liquor?
Over the years, the martini has become one of the best-known mixed alcoholic beverages.
Is martini a strong cocktail?
Martinis are notoriously strong drinks, often around 40% ABV
Is a martini a classy drink?
You don’t need to have it shaken, not stirred. There are many different ways to order your martini based on your preference, such as a dirty martini made with a splash of olive juice and garnished with an olive. However you prefer it, a martini is always a classy and impressive choice.
Can you drink martini straight?
Martinis can be served straight up (no ice) or on the rocks (with ice). A straight up martini is served in a martini glass. A martini on the rocks is served in rocks glass. Martinis come with either olive or a twist garnish.
What goes well with martinis?
Sharp cheeses and salty nuts are a great accompaniment to the Classic Martini’s bold and herbaceous bitter flavor, while mild hummus and pita chips can contrast its strength.
Why are martinis so good?
A good martini comes from the quality of each of its ingredients: the vodka or gin, the vermouth and bitters if desired, and of course, the olives.

EXTERIOR
The shape is unmistakably Aston Martin, but stronger, broader and more muscular than ever, not at a stylist’s whim but to cool and control the most powerful production Aston Martin ever. The DBS is dominated by a breath-taking hexagonal grille, combining a sense of unbounded strength with the most natural beauty. This sets the visual agenda for the entire car while simultaneously feeding the insatiable appetite for oxygen of the mighty 715bhp engine. The DBS is our most aerodynamically sophisticated production car ever. There’s genuine engineering purpose behind the splitters, side sills and Aeroblade II™ that goes far beyond their muscle-bound appearance.
18 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE
Most notable is the new, fixed, carbon fibre Aeroblade II™. As turbulent air flows along the body side behind the C-Pillar it is controlled and redirected by Aeroblade II™, working in conjunction with the double diffuser which accelerates air beneath the car. Whilst most cars work to reduce lift, the Aeroblade II™ and double diffuser work together to create a huge amount of true downforce, pinning the DBS to the road using 180kg of aerodynamic pressure. This incredible combination transforms stability and handling, inspiring driver confidence.

INTERIOR Where others stop, we start. Settle into the sumptuous, leather upholstered interior of the DBS and see how our high-performance seats support your body to perfection. In both the driver and passenger seat you are home before the journey has even commenced.
20 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE
We all know luxury when we see it. It entices and excites; it draws us, spellbound, to its core. But true luxury, Aston Martin DBS luxury, is simple to define and easy to see: it is freedom. Freedom to create an environment of your choosing, freedom to express yourself, freedom to have it your way. Which is why you can select your own cabin for the DBS. Whether you leave the decisions to the exquisite taste of our own interior designers or take that as your starting point and treat the entire interior as your own blank canvas, the DBS gives you that freedom that is the source of all true luxury.

STRONGEST LIGHTWEIGHT MATERIALS
Typically, as a car gets faster, it requires more cooling, larger brakes and stronger suspension, which inevitably results in increased weight. The DBS begs to differ. Naturally it has been upgraded in all areas required to handle its phenomenal performance, but not by merely adding more of the same, instead using the finest, strongest lightweight materials. 24 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE
THE ARCHITECTURE OF BEAUTIFUL
Power without control is power that is squandered, which is why the DBS is a master at making the most of the vast resources the V12 places at its disposal. It starts with a chassis of enormous rigidity and continues with a classic double wishbone front suspension, a geometrically optimal multilink rear axle and an even more stable stance thanks to a track that is 10mm wider than the DB11 at the front and 20mm wider at the rear. Producers of blue wine claim that the whole producing process only contains raw material derived from plants. However, researchers have found that the blue color in some blue wines comes from synthetic food coloring. Blue wine’s mild, sweet taste makes it best suited to the role of an aperitif or cocktail when dining.Blue wine is named for its electric blue color. The first blue wine in the world was produced by a Spanish company called Gïk in 2016. This wine is now sold in 25 countries around the world. All of the creators of Gïk blue wine were under 30 as of 2016. They worked with chemical engineering researchers at University of the Basque Country to develop a product with a distinctive color while maintaining taste. They targeted customers unfamiliar with traditional wine manufacture with their unconventional product. Gïk’s creators marketed their product as innovatively shaking up the traditional wine industry, and maintained this image with stunts like suggesting alt music playlists as pairings on the label. Researchers at Paul Sabatier University found via high-precision spectroscopy that the color of Vindigo and Imajyne blue wine originates not from any natural pigment but rather from brilliant blue FCF (aka Blue 1 or E133), the same food coloring used for Blue Curaçao, blue Jolly Ranchers, and many other products. Blue wine tastes like a fruit wine due to its mellowness and sweetness. Some people find it tastes of syrup but fail to detect the sweetener in the wine. Food & Wine reviewers, however, disliked its artificial sweetness, comparing it to blue Equal packets at a café. It has a lower alcohol content than most wine. Cosmopolitan reviewers compared it to blue Jolly Ranchers, diluted wine mixed with KoolAid, and “jungle juice”, but some thought it might be good in mixed drinks. It has a fruit fragrance. Gïk blue wine says on the label that it is best paired with foods like Carbonara. Others prefer it chilled and paired with seafood.

Sushi Artist Madrid was one of the first restaurants to sell blue wine in Spain, and found it to be more popular with some of their customers than expected. Some customers, especially in France, Spain and other western countries, dislike blue wine, because its production methods, taste, and other qualities violate their countries’ winemaking tradition. Additionally, many people still believe that only curaçao should be marketed as the blue alcoholic beverage. To some, blue wine should not be regarded as wine due to its low alcohol content and sweetener, making it just a beverage with mild and sweet fruit taste. Chad Walsh, a sommelier, claims that the main trend of wine is still towards natural and traditional products, which blue wine is not. This trend explains why it’s hard to find blue wine on a formal wine list. However, blue wine is more likely to appear at parties, casual bars, and other informal occasions. It is also sold in retail stores and online. In 2016, Gïk became the first company to sell blue wine. The European Union ruled that this product could not be labeled as wine. In order to continue to sell its product, Gïk ceased labeling it as wine in the EU. Vindigo, a French company founded by René Le Bail, also produces blue wine. It launched in the south of France in August, 2018, and was more successful in that region than Gïk. Despite French customers’ interest in buying blue wine, no French vineyards would work with Vindigo, forcing it to be produced in Spain. Vindigo uses Chardonnay grapes. Vindigo has had its greatest successes in countries such as Italy and China.
30 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE
??? ?? ? Is blue wine real?
Despite its artificial appearance, the wine’s strange hue is actually natural, created from anthocyanin, a pigment in grape skins, and a dye called indigotine which is extracted from plants.
What kind of wine is blue?
Vindigo begins its life as a Chardonnay before being filtered through the pulp of red grape skins where pigments known as anthocyanins give the 100-percent natural wine its blue color.
What does blue wine taste like?
Blue wine tastes like a fruit wine due to its mellowness and sweetness. Some people find it tastes of syrup but fail to detect the sweetener in the wine. Food & Wine reviewers, however, disliked its artificial sweetness, comparing it to blue Equal packets at a café. It has a lower alcohol content than most wine.
How does blue wine get its color?
It actually gets its lively hue from anthocyanin, a pigment found in grape skin that can appear red, purple, or, you guessed it — blue.
What country was the first produced blue wine?
A group of young Spaniards has broken the mold with the launch of the world’s first blue wine. Six entrepreneurs have invented Gik, a bright blue wine from Bierzo in northwest Spain made with red and white grapes. TEQUILAANDSPIRITS.COM | 31

DRINKING Traditions Around the World
Drinking has always been associated with celebration and festivities when people get together to socialize and enjoy some booze. People across the globe have a range of preferences when it comes to their favourite liquor, some like to sip on whiskey or rum while others opt for vodka or beer.
60 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE
Besides the type of liquor that people consume, what gets more fascinating is the way they consume it. Different regions of the world have some unique traditions of drinking with each one of them having some significance in their culture. While drinking has always been associated with festivities and celebrations, many cultures consider alcohol an integral aspect for their socialising. Here are some of the strangest drinking traditions from across the world.
GERMANY As per a widespread German tradition, there is pre-wedding drinking practice, where the groom’s best man is honoured with a task of mock kidnapping the bride-to-be, while leaving subtle hints for the groom. As per this tradition, the bride-to-be and her kidnapper can drink until the groom shows up to rescue his bride and pays the bill. Nowadays, this ritual is more common in villages.
FRANCE In traditional French weddings, the bride and groom are sent to their room on the reception day. After this, the guests gather all the leftover food from the ceremony and then the newlywed couple are made to drink the mixture. It is believed that the ritual helps with the virility of the couple. TEQUILAANDSPIRITS.COM | 61
NETHERLANDS In this European country, a tradition named ‘Kopstootje’ is quite famous which translates to ‘little headbutt’ in English. Going by the ritual, people have to gulp a whole glass of Genever, a traditional liquor served in a tulipshaped glass. However, the drink must be finished without using hands and one has to bend over to lift the glass with his/her mouth and then even gulp down a beer after it.
GEORGIA The strangest thing about Georgian drinking customs is their interest in copious amounts of toasting. From friends and family to pets and fruits, Georgians are just elated to raise a toast to anything and everything. But do note that they consider it bad luck if toasting is done with anything except wine or brandy. And, if a toast is raised with any other drink, it’s considered insulting to what is being toasted, thereby making the entire act an anti-toast.

CZECH REPUBLIC People in the Czech Republic take their drinking traditions very seriously. Here, eye contact is a must while you are seated at a table and drinking. Moreover, crossing arms with anyone while lifting the glass to toast must be avoided at all costs, and spilling the drink is also considered a sin.
SPAIN At the Haro Wine Festival in Northern Spain, though, guests show up with jugs, buckets, and other containers filled with wine for a fun-filled “battle.” While this summer festival has officially been taking place since 1965, the inspiration can be traced back to the 13th century when Haro started putting up purple banners on San Pedro’s Day to separate the town from the neighboring Miranda de Ebro. One year, this resulted in a celebratory wine war, a tradition that’s upheld today with the Batalla de Vino, or the Battle of Wine.
THAILAND As per Thai culture, it is deemed rude to finish your drink. As such, one is expected to have a glass at least halffull during all times. However, this does not mean that drinking in Thailand is not meant for the faint hearted.
