Foreword
We are proud to present the second issue of Terberg Special Vehicles Magazine. We start by taking you back four decades, to the year 1973, when my uncle Goof Terberg decided to develop and engineer the first Terberg Terminal tractor. When the prototype was presented, less than five months later, nobody could have guessed the impact it would have. The rapid growth in container transport worldwide resulted in a high demand for terminal tractors in ports.
Fore word Additionally, RoRo transport developed strongly in Europe, leading to a need for 4x4 tractors to handle cargo safely on ramps. The 1980s and ‘90s also saw significant growth in the use of our tractors to shunt trailers at industrial sites and distribution centres. Today, Terberg produces customised tractors for these markets in over 90 countries. This issue has a special focus on Terberg tractors in the steel industry. Steelworks provide a harsh operating environment that demands the most of the equipment. Many of our tractors are used 365 days a year, clocking up 5,000 to 7,000 operating hours while hauling loads of up to 150 tonnes. Our customers in the steel industry therefore look for robust and reliable vehicles that need little maintenance. They also expect excellent service support and rapid delivery of spare parts. Our after-market support, which helps operators get the most from their tractors, is also addressed in this issue. Our Spare Parts department can check the specifications of every tractor we have built using the Parts On Line (POL) database and identify the spares our customers need. In most cases we can ship the spares the day they are ordered and help our customers keep their Terberg fleets running. We trust that you will enjoy reading this year’s magazine. of Terberg Terminal Tr actors In 1973, our then Managing Director, Goof Terberg, and Chief Engineer, Joop Boumans, heard from the Dutch Volvo trucks importer that terminal tractors might become essential for transporting shipping containers in ports. Mr. Terberg responded promptly and in just five months developed a prototype tractor. They did not do any market research at all, but just acted on the hunch that this type of vehicle could be a good addition to the company’s line of dump trucks.

RT403 industrial tractor We interviewed Ronald van Zoelen, Manager Engineering & Automation, about the development of the new RT403 industrial tractor. He explained: “This unit builds on the design of the proven RT382. Visually, the most apparent difference is the new, larger cab which is extremely ergonomic and offers the driver a more comfortable working environment. This new cab improves both driver welfare and productivity. The front of the vehicle has also been redesigned to match the new cab.

Terberg RT and YT tractors have found their way into steelworks where their robustness and reliability are highly valued. They are well suited to 24/7 operations in these demanding industrial environments. Our range includes the RT382 which is designed for the heaviest applications, up to a maximum GCW of 375 tonnes.
Poertgen GmbH Gelsenkirchen, Germany
Poertgen provides transport services at six steelworks in Germany. The family-owned company purchased its first Terberg tractor in 1980 and currently operates 42 units. Given the demanding environment and operation around the clock, all year round, Poertgen considers high reliability and good after-sales support to be essential. Hence the rapid delivery of spares and consumables from Benschop is greatly valued.

La Cisa Dalmine, Italy
The company operates a fleet of RT and YT tractors to provide logistics services at steelworks in Italy. These tractors are mostly used with specialist roll trailers. La Cisa’s first Terberg unit was an RT382 for handling extremely heavy loads. Their latest unit is an RT283 with special hydraulics to operate a Seacom tipping trailer for transporting scrap. This combination has proven to be much more attractive than the dumper truck used previously, especially in terms of tonnes/hour handled, fuel consumption and maintenance. La Cisa commends Terberg’s understanding of the steel industry, consideration of driver comfort and effective after-sales service.
Tube City IMS Glassport, PA, USA
Tube City IMS is a major provider of industrial services at steelworks throughout the world. The company recently purchased two RT382 tractors for deployment at the Outokumpu stainless steelworks in Calvert, Alabama. The units are used to haul steel scrap using large baskets on special 200 tonne weighbridge trailers from Seacom. Tube City formerly used conventional scrap bucket carriers for this application but opted for Terberg tractors because of their lower operating cost and greater operational flexibility. Tube City also appreciates the high power of the RT units as it enables efficient handling of even the heaviest trailers.

We will even be able to integrate this unit in our other internal logistics operations in the future. On top of that, the price of this solution compared to a heavy-duty wheel loader is much more attractive. The whole package the quality of the product, operational options and price - made us decide to purchase this specialized Terberg machine.”
Terberg RT RoRo tractors (4x4 drive) and YT yard tractors (4x2) are widely used by major port operators worldwide. Their key reasons for choosing Terberg tractors are always the reliability and the low cost of ownership resulting from the high fuel efficiency and reduced maintenance costs. Port operators with heavy RoRo cargo also appreciate the SafeNeck, which considerably increases safety when hauling heavy loads on steep ship’s ramps. We trust that these case studies give you a good idea of the port applications of our tractors.

Melbourne, Australia
Toll Shipping, part of Toll Group, operate two RoRo ships on an up to seven days a week, overnight service across Bass Strait between Melbourne, on mainland Australia and Burnie on the island of Tasmania. The application is particularly demanding due to the ten-hour turnaround time and consistently heavy loads of up to ninety tonnes. Adding to the stress is the fact Bass Strait is known as one of the world’s roughest stretches of water and heavy crossings are par for the course. Toll Shipping has been operating Terberg Tractors since 1985 and recently took delivery of nine 240 kW RT323s with more units scheduled for delivery in 2014. S h i f t i n g pa r c e l s by th e th o u sa n d s Terberg YT yard tractors (4x2) are used as shunters (tugs) at many distribution centres where they have proven themselves to be more appropriate for trailer shunting than conventional road tractors. For example, they have an optimised driveline and gearbox, while their lifting fifth wheel saves time as trailers can be shunted without raising the landing legs. The high reliability and fuel efficiency of Terberg units come to the fore in these applications where they often have to work around the clock. Where permitted by local regulations, some operators also use these tractors for short trips on public roads. Operators using swap bodies appreciate the Terberg BC body carrier; it not only handles swap bodies very efficiently but can also tow semitrailers and drawbar trailers.

Sister Company
High loads & poor Terrain Terberg Techniek, one of our sister companies, modifies trucks for special applications. Their specialties include fitting additional axles to Volvo trucks and supplying axle kits. Terberg Techniek has also developed the X-Track auxiliary front wheel drive system.
Additional axles not only increase the load capacity but also allow vehicles to work on poor roads (e.g. on construction sites or in forests) and on sites where the axle load is restricted (e.g. certain industrial sites). Terberg Techniek’s Modular Axle Configuration (TTMAC) programme includes axles with capacities of 7.5 to 16 tonnes which can be installed as pusher axles in front of the truck’s original tandem axles or behind them as tag axles. The modular programme also includes electro-hydraulic steering options and lift axles. If required the additional axles can be driven. For example, Terberg Techniek can convert a Volvo 6x4 truck to an 8x6 unit by installing a steering, driven axle in front of the tandem axles. A special differential gear drives the additional axle with 30% of the available torque, while the remaining 70% is split
“X-track really makes life easier and safer on difficult surfaces” between the two tandem axles. This is an excellent solution for the transport of heavy construction equipment. Terberg Techniek fits these modifications in its own workshops and also supplies kits and subassemblies to Volvo dealers internationally, and even to Volvo’s own truck assembly plant. These axles are fitted to trucks used in the mining industry and for other demanding applications, throughout Europe and in countries such as India, Indonesia and South Korea. Bert Terberg has been working in the family business for 26 years, and three years ago he was appointed Director of Terberg Techniek. He found the company to be in excellent shape, with a sound product portfolio. This provided him with good basis for further growth and, especially, international expansion. We interviewed Sjef Postelmans, Technical Manager Vessels and Equipment of the Grimaldi Group. The Grimaldi Group is a multinational logistics group specialised in the operation of rollon/roll-off vessels, car carriers and ferries. The company operates some 120 Terberg tractors which are mostly based on 39 ships serving the Mediterranean region and Africa.

even more important. When heavy trailers have to be taken down ships’ ramps using tractors fitted with conventional goosenecks, safety largely depends on the skills of the driver. A momentary lapse of attention, heavy braking or unfamiliarity with the equipment can easily lead to a serious accident. Hence Grimaldi have invested in around 50 SafeNecks for use with Terberg RT282 RoRo tractors. Because the centre of gravity is between the wheels of the tractor the stability of the combination is greatly improved and accidents are much less likely. The Grimaldi Group was one of the SafeNeck’s launch customers. Some of their vessels are equipped with two Terberg tractors, one with

Terberg People Spare parts Department – interview Dave Brouwer and Remco van de Vlasakker
Supplying parts worldwide When a vehicle arrives at a customer’s site that is not the end of the relationship with Terberg, but just the beginning. Every day, our Spare Parts department ships tractor components to customers all over the world. The extensive inventory means that 96% of orders can be supplied from stock. Usually, deliveries in Europe are made within 24 hours, and worldwide within 48 hours. In this way we help to keep 15,000 tractors operating efficiently.
Dave Brouwer, Manager Spare Parts, explained: “We want to make life as easy as possible for our customers, and that means supporting them with prompt deliveries and helping them determine the right parts for their vehicle. In our department we aim to combine the best service with the highest quality, original parts. We generally respond to parts enquiries within an hour and can often even process an order within that period. In addition to spare parts for Terberg tractors we can supply spares of all other major automotive brands. We also supply a full range of filters from leading suppliers. Basically we are a onestop shop for automotive components. Again, that makes life easier for our customers.”
34
SPECIAL VEHICLES
The department has a dedicated section with staff specialising in customs and shipping issues to speed up deliveries. Terberg is also registered as a “known consignor” to avoid the costs and delays associated with security screening of shipments. Our spare parts sales specialists have access to the customer database and documentation to determine the appropriate spares based on the vehicle’s serial number. The Spare Parts department works closely with Terberg distributors throughout the world to supply parts to end users. If there is no distributor in a country then the department supplies directly to the customer.
“We strive for the fastest delivery”
Dave Brouwer continued: “We guarantee availability of spares for 15 years after delivery of a vehicle. But in most cases we support vehicles for much longer. Our department always aims to provide the best service and the highest quality.” Remco van de Vlasakker, Assistant Manager Spare Parts, added: “ We recently supplied parts, from stock, for a 4x2 yard tractor, delivered in 1978.”
