Superior ergonomics: less effort, more efficiency

YT LOW ENTRY CAB

SOME DRIVERS HAVE TO CLIMB IN AND OUT OF THEIR CAB A HUNDRED TIMES IN A SINGLE WORKING DAY

One of the reasons behind the success of our vehicles in the market is that we aim to improve the working environment of the drivers. For example by providing them with a comfortable cab and seat, a good view of the area they are operating in, and many options for customisation. To identify further opportunities for improvement we listen carefully to our customers and study the way they use our vehicles in their operations.

The YT tractors were originally designed for

Terberg YT, TT and RT tractors are used in many industries for transporting up to 375 tonnes Gross Combined Weight. Here the robustness and reliability of our products are highly valued. The ease of manoeuvring and the swivelling seats on some models are particularly useful when working in crowded yards. These are also valuable when operating inside buildings, where Euro 5 engines are required in some countries. Our standard tractors are supplemented by the RT403 industrial tractor, whose fifth wheel lifting capacity of 45 tonnes is particularly useful in the steel industry. This unit is also used for towing multitrailer trains. Our optional SafeNeck improves the weight distribution between the trailer and the tractor and can increase the load capacity up to 250% when operating on ramps and slopes.

SSAB SWEDEN

SSAB is a leading manufacturer of valueadded, high-strength steel, with production plants in Sweden and the USA and a presence in 45 countries. SSAB’s products enable their customers to manufacture lighter and more energy-efficient products. The company recently invested in two RT403 units, our most powerful tractors. They also purchased a second-hand RT282 industrial tractor. These vehicles are used for transporting steel slabs and coils weighing up to 150 tonnes. After carefully assessing the tractors on the market SSAB decided that the Terberg units were the best solution for their application given the build quality and customer support. Emil Haglund of SSAB commented: “It’s obvious that Terberg takes quality and customer support very seriously. As do SSAB. Our drivers are very satisfied with the tractors so far.”

SPECIAL VEHICLES

Terberg RT RoRo tractors (4x4 drive) and YT yard tractors (4x2) are widely used by major port operators worldwide. Their key reasons for choosing Terberg tractors are always the reliability and the low cost of ownership resulting from the high fuel efficiency and reduced maintenance costs. Port operators with heavy RoRo cargo also appreciate the SafeNeck, which considerably increases safety when hauling heavy loads on steep ship’s ramps. We trust that these case studies give you a good idea of the port applications of our tractors.

larger side doors in the cab and we could meet this requirement by working with our cab supplier. Another requirement was for an additional front bumper. This bumper protects the cab against minor collisions when a trailer is positioned in front of a tractor, under a crane. Our engineers developed a bumper design which met all requirements. The safety and ergonomics features of our YTs were a perfect match for APMT’s strict safety requirements. All in all, APMT was convinced by our bid and we concluded a contract for the supply of 102 YT222 terminal tractors. The delivery of these units was completed last winter. As the tractors in the APMT Algeciras fleet operate around 4000 hours per year, fuel consumption was an essential component of the business case. These tractors are fitted with the latest Cummins Euro 5 engines which have much lower particulate and NOx emissions than earlier engine generations and their fuel consumption is reduced by approximately 5%. Together with the fuel savings of approximately 15% due to Terberg’s standard Fuel Reduction Package this results in very economical operation and helps the customer to meet their carbon reduction objectives. We are very pleased that we now have another APMT terminal as one of our customers.

FLINDERS PORTS AUSTRALIA

Flinders Ports operates seven ports in South Australia and handles a wide range of cargos. When the company decided to double the bulk material handling capacity at Port Adelaide they started looking for suitable tractors. The operations require hauling iron ore containers in B-double configurations (also known as B-train) with a GCW up to 110 tonnes, between the harbour crane, ship and container stack. The company decided to invest in two YT220 tractors with a maximum GCW of 150 tonnes, giving them a generous power reserve. This also gives the option of adopting a super B-double configuration in future for an even higher throughput of iron ore. Flinders Ports also appreciates the high level of safety and operator comfort provided by the Terberg units.

In view of the expected increase in freight volumes, especially unaccompanied trailers, Fjord Line purchased nine 9 Terberg RT223 4x4 RoRo tractors. Each of the new ferries carries two tractors and the rest are based at the ports. The units are customised with special hydraulics for the trailers as well as an alcohol-lock system. Gert Balling, Managing Director, Fjord Line: “We have worked with [distributor] N.C. Nielsen and Terberg for 10 years, and we know what they stand for.” The company also considered the low noise level and spacious cabs as important features.

AAT AUSTRALIA

Australian Amalgamated Terminals (AAT) is a specialist stevedoring facilities company operating in most of Australia’s major ports. The company has terminals with facilities for importing and exporting motor vehicles and general cargo. AAT operates 6 Terberg RT323 4x4 RoRo tractors at Brisbane, Port Kembla and Melbourne. All these tractors are fitted with our unique SafeNeck which increases safety and allowable payload by optimising the weight distribution between the front and rear wheels. This is a key feature for AAT’s operations which involve heavy ramp work. The tractors are fitted with 240 kW Mercedes engines and are supported by Terberg’s distributor in Australia, Clark Equipment.

TECHNICAL FOCUS

Reducing environmental impact and costs

BEYOND DIESEL For the foreseeable future most vehicles used in our industry will be powered by diesel engines. However, we are actively investigating the other options and already delivering vehicles for them. In general, the alternative fuels result in lower emissions than diesel and in some markets they can also reduce operating costs.

Our EV tractors are now in use with a number of customers, such as Ikea distribution centres in the Netherlands and Germany. The initial costs of these tractors are relatively high, but the electricity they consume is cheaper than diesel and they also have lower maintenance requirements. At Terberg we always listen to our customers to identify their needs. This has enabled us to develop experience with alternatives to diesel fuel. Alternatives which can benefit both the environment and our customers’ bottom line.

S H I F T I N G PA R C E L S BY TH E TH O U SA N D S Terberg YT yard tractors (4x2) are used as shunters (tugs) at many distribution centres where they have proven themselves to be more appropriate for trailer shunting than conventional road tractors. For example, they have an optimised driveline and gearbox, while their lifting fifth wheel saves time as trailers can be shunted without raising the landing legs. The high reliability and fuel efficiency of Terberg units come to the fore in these applications where they often have to work around the clock. Where permitted by local regulations, some operators also use these tractors for short trips on public roads. Operators using swap bodies appreciate the Terberg BC body carrier; it not only handles swap bodies very efficiently but can also tow semitrailers and drawbar trailers.

KLOK CONTAINERS ROTTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS

Klok Containers has more than forty years’ experience in waste disposal and recycling and is part of the Shanks Group which handles over five million tonnes of waste annually. The company uses a Terberg YT/CC222 container carrier for handling containers at its site. The unit is fitted with a VDL hooklift. Edwin Kolk, Manager Operations, Containers: “We use the container carrier for onsite operations and positioning 40 m³ bins with a length of 7 metres. We opted for Terberg because of our good experience with two other units they supplied to us. The ergonomic cab and other features simply make this container carrier the best choice for our operations. It is also fitted with a system to fix a net over the bins.”

BEHALA GERMANY

The company provides container and bulk handling services in ports as well as local delivery. Behala tested a YT202-EV last year and recently purchased one of these units. Our tractor is used for delivering ISO containers and bulk goods in Berlin, within a radius of 10 km from Behala’s intermodal terminal. It is fitted with a hydraulic powerpack to operate tipping semitrailers used for delivering bulk coffee to a roaster. They appreciate the reliability of our tractors and consider Terberg to be a professional partner. Behala made this investment as the company wanted to use an electric vehicle for the last part of the supply chain. Zeppelin produces advanced generator sets with ratings from 10 kW to 17 MW and is a market leader in the marine generator industry. These units weigh up to 65 tonnes, with dimensions up to 12 x 3 x 4 metres. Until recently Zeppelin assembled units up to 25 tonnes on roller pallets which were moved around the factory with fork lift trucks. Larger units were assembled on road trailers. This approach had some disadvantages in terms of capacity and manoeuvrability. Zeppelin carefully considered the options and decided to invest in a RT223 4x4 industrial tractor and TTS Liftec cassette lifter (Translifter).

TERBERG DTS UK SPECIAL

FOCUS ON TERBERG DTS

Terbergs in operation at the Port of Felixstowe © The Port of Felixstowe 34

SPECIAL VEHICLES

Terberg’s UK subsidiary was originally set up as Distribution Tractor Services in 1998 by Alisdair Couper (currently Managing Director) and Duncan Stewart. The company’s portfolio included Terberg tractors as well as aircraft ground support equipment. Two years later, DTS became a Terberg subsidiary and is now UK leader in specialist vehicles for several market sectors. Terberg DTS also supplies specialist Seacom trailers, firefighting vehicles and Terberg Kinglifter truck-mounted fork lift trucks, and operates a busy service and repair depot. The company operates one of the largest specialist vehicle hire fleets in the UK supporting the logistics, industrial, aviation and military sectors.

Alisdair is convinced that the company’s success is due to its team and their flexibility in looking after their customers: “Let’s ensure that the product is maintained properly, highly reliable and when there is a problem get it back to work as quickly as possible. To meet the changing needs of our customers we must always be prepared to ask questions, push boundaries and challenge historical methods and processes. Without doing this we would stop growing, developing and innovating.” TERBERG TRACTORS In a relatively short time, Terberg DTS has managed to make Terberg tractors a familiar sight in ports and distribution centres throughout the UK and Ireland. For example, the Port of Felixstowe, the largest container handling port in the UK, operates close to 200 YT and RT terminal tractors. Some of these units have been in service for over 14 years, clocking up over 50,000 operating hours with the original drive trains, and will be replaced by new Terberg tractors later this year. Richard Ambler of the Terberg DTS parts department: “Reliability is key to the success of the Felixstowe operation. Terberg DTS service and parts supply has played a significant role in ensuring that the company has now become one of the toplisted ‘approved suppliers’ to The Port of Felixstowe.” Terberg tractors are also widely used at distribution centres such as those operated by Tesco, Sainsbury, Ford and Fowler Welch. 35

Agneta Nilsson, Communications Manager, Trelleborgs Hamn AB: “In environmental terms, the new locomotive is much better than the 50-year old diesel locs we used to use. The port selected Terberg because of the good past experience with our equipment, good engineering and after- market support, as well as the good price/quality ratio. The fact that the unit can be maintained by a conventional automotive workshop also reduces costs.
