President’s Welcome 2016 Historic Sandown

W

elcome one and all to Historic Sandown 2016, “25 Years of Thunder”. This is the 25th year of this event promoted by the VHRR, and is its great to see so many people taking part in the true spirit of Historic Racing at Sandown. At this event we also celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Sir Jack Brabham’s 1966 World Championship. We are fortunate to be able to display at this event Sir Jack’s championship winning Repco Brabham BT19. Make sure you have a close look at it. There will also be some merchandise available for purchase in the VHRR Merchandise Marquee behind the garages which will include some special celebratory medallions of Sir Jack’s 1966 Championship. This year sees an entry of some 330 plus cars represented in all historic categories. There will be some very exciting racing in all groups over the weekend, and also some great cars on display on the concourse, in the public areas surrounding the pits, and in The “Red Hill’ spectator area at the Dandenong Road Corner of the circuit. A free shuttle bus will operate between the main gate and Red Hill at regular intervals. On behalf of VHRR I extend a warm welcome to all of the competitors, and particularly those who have come from overseas and interstate, to support this meeting. It is fantastic to see so many of you make such an effort to come to Sandown. This year we see the return of a large grid of the fabulous F5000’s with a combined grid of local cars, and 10 cars from NZ. They will have their own race and should provide some exciting racing. In addition we have a large field of Formula Junior cars from all over the world competing at Sandown as part of a World Series. In Australia, they recently competed at Wanneroo W.A, and following on from Sandown will head to Eastern Creek which will conclude the Australian leg of the World Series. It is expected that there will be a maximum grid of these cars which should ensure some great racing.

We also have 2 large grids of Grp N Touring cars, another crowd favourite, as well as a large entry of Grp S cars. I am certain we will see many fantastic events over the weekend. I wish you all a safe and enjoyable weekend of Historic Motor Racing. I also want to extend special thanks to all of the volunteer officials who have supported this meeting, including those from VHRR, MG Car Club, Vic Flag Marshalls, Vic Scrutineers, Fire and Rescue, and Medical response. Particular thanks to our long serving Clerk of Course, David Vernall, and his very experienced team in Race Control. Thanks also to Melbourne Racing Club for the magnificent presentation of the venue for our event. Thank you also to our very loyal sponsors, SHANNONS INSURANCE, COOLDRIVE, PENRITE, HSV, MUSTANG MOTORSPORT, DUTTON GARAGE and all the other sponsors who have advertised with us in the program, or who have set up a trade stand at this event. Please take the time to look at the trade stands and support the sponsors who support Historic Racing. Without our sponsors we simply would not be able to run such great events. Finally, on behalf of the VHRR I would like to thank our Chairman of the Sandown Race Committee, Noel Robson, his race committee, and the MG Car Club of Victoria for the long hours and effort they put in to organize this great event. Enjoy your weekend Ian Tate VHRR President

The Victorian Historic Racing Register sincerely thanks the sponsors & advertisers for their valuable support and commitment to the successful running of Historic Sandown. Without the support of these organisations the staging of this event would not be possible. The VHRR would like to thank V8RACE for their supply of course vehicles.

P

enrite turns 90! From small beginnings in 1926, Les Mecoles, 16 years old founded Penrite Oil Company from his parents’ home in St Kilda, Melbourne. The first batches of oil were made on his mother’s kitchen stove and delivered to service stations, milling factories and the local shipping port using his father’s wheel barrow. Oils were manufactured from the highest quality lubricant from Pennsylvanian (PEN) base stocks, regarded at the time as the best in the world. Only the right oils (RITE) would ever be sold to local customers, hence Penrite, with its unique name gained trust and respect amongst many. As the business began to grow, a new blending facility was built in Richmond. After several years, Penrite again moved to Abbotsford. Penrite was experiencing further growth as Melbourne and regional Victoria grew in population and the road and railway network expanded across Australia. New automotive products were introduced including batteries and oil filters. In 1965, Penrite was forced to move to nearby East Brunswick as the Abbotsford site was purchased by the Victorian Government to make way for the newly commissioned Eastern Freeway. The business continued to grow, but in 1979, Les Mecoles , suffering from poor health, sold the company to John and Margaret Dymond.

John served a 7 year apprenticeship at Vauxhall Motors Luton. He obtained a Mechanical Engineering Degree at night school. Whilst at Vauxhall he became a draughtsman, specialising in the design of gearboxes. Moving to Melbourne in March 1958, he took up a position with BP Australia, in the Technical Department. During this time he assisted in the development of lubricants for the harsh climates of Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and Northern Australia. In 1968, a vacancy occurred at Lubrizol Australia, an American international additive producer. John took this opportunity to become involved in the additive industry which was becoming an important part of lubricant production. Johns 20 years’ experience in, not only the oil industry, but also the additive market gave him the background and knowledge he needed to take up the challenge of his own company PENRITE OIL. In 1981, Penrite launched a new range of premium multigrade engine oils named HPR (High Performance Range) developed to solve automotive oil consumption problems and for the local , harsh Australian driving conditions. Other products introduced at this time included 10 Tenths racing oils for classic and modern cars, motorcycles plus heavy duty engine oils, gear oils and transmission fluids. Penrite continued to grow and expand, opening up new distribution channels and market segments. A second blending facility

Historic Sandown 2016

was opened in Brisbane, soon followed by new warehousing in Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Sydney and Darwin. Exports commenced in New Zealand, Southeast Asia, America, UK and Europe. New smaller pack sizes for the DIY (Do it yourself) market were introduced complementing the traditional DIFM (Do it for me) market of the 44 gallon drum. In 1997, the existing blending facility in Melbourne could no longer keep up with the demand and was relocated to Wantirna South and soon after, the Brisbane site was also relocated to larger premises. Further product ranges were introduced including the Everyday and Enviro+ , driven by the goal to develop the right product for every application. Today Penrite continues to be 100% Australian owned and managed by Toby and Nigel Dymond, from Melbourne, continuing on the core values and philosophy.

AUSSIES TO BATTLE KIWIS IN SHANNONS INSURANCE F5000 CHALLENGE

Cross Tasman rivalry between Australia and New Zealand is a fact of life, and this is no more evident than on the sporting arena. Motor sport is no exception, and over the years race fans have enjoyed Herculean battles with our arch rivals across ‘the ditch’. The 2016 Historic Sandown meeting will feature the Shannons Insurance Formula 5000 Challenge when New Zealand’s best, spearheaded by veteran driver Ken Smith take on the top Australians in “The Return of the Thunder”. The decade of the ‘seventies saw Formula 5000 dominate the Australian Grand Prix, four of which were held here at Sandown. Local champions such as Matich, Stewart, Goss, Brown and Walker are etched in Grand Prix history, but on three occasions the party was spoiled by an invader from the land of the great white cloud, Graham McRae.

Evening up the ledger was Australia’s triple Gold Star champion John McCormack who was runner-up in the 1971 Tasman Series, and won back-to-back New Zealand Grands Prix in 1973 and ’74. McCormack will be on hand at the 2016 Historic Sandown meeting to present the trophies for the Shannons Insurance F5000 Challenge races, and will join other VHRR Ambassadors – (Fred Gibson, Murray Carter, John Bowe and Kevin Bartlett) along with successful local and international racer from the sixties and seventies, John Reaburn. These ‘greats’ from yesteryear will be on hand to sign autographs and meet the fans. Twenty ground-shaking Formula 5000s will face the starter this weekend. Yes, it’s “The Return of the Thunder” at Historic Sandown - the 25th anniversary meeting at this iconic venue. Brian Reed

John Reaburn Ford GT40 at Spa (Eau Rouge)

John Reaburn Porsche 906E Rheims 12 hour

JOHN REABURN – A PROFILE

J

ohn Reaburn’s motor racing career began in 1958 behind the wheel of an FX Holden. This was followed by the FE “Jaywood Holden”, the quickest non-Repco headed car in Australia, and for more than two years Reaburn was a dominant figure in Victorian touring car circles. A Buchanan Holden then became his weapon of choice with the introduction locally of the GT category. Reaburn’s successes caught the eye of Harry Firth who invited him to share a Singer Gazelle with him in the first Armstrong ‘500’ in 1960 at Phillip Island. The wily Firth became Reaburn’s mentor, and when Ford Motor Company entered motor sport in 1961, Reaburn became the company’s first contracted driver. He rewarded Ford with several strong finishes including a class win with Firth in the 1965 Bathurst classic. Two Lowood 4-hour races and a 3rd in the inaugural Sandown 6-hour were added to his CV. A cable from British gentleman racer Sir Gawaine Baillie in 1965 offered Reaburn a drive in his 427cu. in. Ford Galaxie in the Australian Touring Car Championship – (the car had been left in Australia after its dramatic exit from the 1964 Sandown 6-hour). Reaburn was lying a comfortable second to Norm Beechey’s new Mustang when a broken bonnet pin brought about an unscheduled pit stop. The Galaxie was relegated to 4th at the chequered flag, but it resulted in Sir Gawaine suggesting Reaburn try his luck in Europe. Arriving in England with an impressive list of 74 wins, Reaburn landed a salesman’s job with ‘Chequered Flag’, the largest sports car dealership in the UK. What

John Reaburn Lotus Cortina Brands Hatch

followed was an interesting social life mixed with motor racing, including working with Shepperton Film Studios to produce audio car sounds for dubbing in two James Bond movies. He also contributed articles to Australia’s ‘Racing Car News’. Of dubious honour was his breaking of a three-year record in an early Sunday morning blast around West London in a Shelby Cobra. Apparently “unknown bureaucrats” were somehow able to occasionally close the public roads for five minutes, and ‘name’ drivers were keen to try their hand at being the quickest. In a separate incident, being in the wrong place at the wrong time resulted in the Aussie being arrested by MI5, accused of being part of one of the biggest spy scandals of all time. But there was the more important other side. Reaburn raced Lotus Cortinas, a Shelby Cobra (his London record breaker), and a Porsche 906 mainly on the continent, and in 1968 travelled the length and breadth of Europe competing in endurance races in his privately owned and sponsored Ford GT40. His most satisfying result was 4th in the 1000km sports car race at the Nurburgring – not bad for a privateer in a field of 130 including works entries. It was rumoured that Reaburn was being considered for a works drive the following year with either Porsche or Ferrari, but he made a conscious decision to quit the sport after so many of his contemporaries had succumbed to accidents. Reaburn had exceeded his own expectations – and lived to tell his story. Recently, John Reaburn has been an enthusiastic, contributing member of the VHRR, and this weekend we are proud to have him as a special guest at the 25th Sandown Historic meeting. Come along and meet him.

Vale: Gil Gordon Although Gil had not been in the Club for more than a few years, he made an immediate impact with his humour, good cheer and generosity and won friends immediately. The immaculately dressed Gil and wife Shirley were favourites in the pits, giving moral support to son Nathan as he tried to beat his unruly Torana into submission. Team Gordon is very much a family affair and the three generations from Gil and Shirley, Nathan and Megan and grandsons Will and Jack helped bring back the spirit of fun and family into historic touring car racing. Gil was car enthusiast and superb salesman with a passion for quality Italian machinery, who sold Alfas hand over fist in Geelong. In the 70s, the Gil Gordon Alfas were regular Group C class heroes. In 1976 Gil sponsored the Graham Harrison, Fred Gibson-built, Foley customer car that ran at Bathurst. Following a knock with Frank Porter in the race, Gil cast his eye on the Alfa Guilia 2000 GTAM that was also running, driven by Carter/ Leffler. Continued page 31

Continued from page 29... Built for Alfa Australia by AutoDelta to Group 2 specs (minus the flares) it had been fitted with a Spica Nord 2 litre motor to meet the regs. Gil snapped it up and ran the car at Bathurst in 77 with Henderson/Hopwood and again in 1980 with Henderson/Harrison. Sydney Alfa nutter and good bloke Bill Magoffin now has both cars fully restored and running in Group C, as well as a Group N Alfa that also gets to stretch its legs occasionally. Interestingly the GTAM, one of two AutoDelta cars ever to come to Australia, was once owned by Mike Bugelly, who has returned to the Alfa fold with the pretty Group Nb ‘stepnose’ 105 that we hope to see soon on the track. Among his many other endearing qualities, Gil was a superb raconteur and joke teller par excellence. I wanted to set up a contest between Gil and John Mann at a club meeting, as contestants that you could back for a dollar or two, trying to out gag each other in a Joke Off. They were both consummate car salesmen from the era when the ploy was get the prospect rolling on the floor laughing helplessly before you went in for a signature while he or she was gasping for breath.

Historic Sandown 2016

Last year I was fortunate to spend the Historic Winton weekend with Gil and Nathan and two other father and son duos, on what was definitely a Boys’ Weekend. The highlight was a long Saturday dinner in a farmhouse with red wine, a roaring fire and roaring laughter, most of which generated by Gil’s astounding 60-year repertoire of gags and tall tales. We were in the presence of a master. In the last days before he went into the hospital from which he would sadly never emerge, Gil was at Calder for our John Brash Dash Club Day. Not only had he organized a great deal on the snags and burgers and transported them up from Geelong, he was in there organizing, handing them out, selling drinks, taking the money and making everyone smile with a kind thought and a joke. That was Gil all over. Luckily for the club, his legacy is alive and well in the hands of Nathan, Megan, grandsons Will and Jack, and of course, Shirley, who will carry on the tradition of ‘always putting in’. We’ll miss him. Chris Ralph

epco racing engines were designed and built by a small team at a Repco subsidiary, Repco-Brabham engines Pty Ltd, in Maidstone, Australia. Repco’s 620 series engine is a normally aspirated unit with eight cylinders in a ‘V’ configuration. It uses American engine blocks obtained from Oldsmobile’s aluminium alloy 215 engine. Oldsmobile’s 215 engine, used in the F-85 Cutlass compact car between 1961 and 1963, was abandoned by General Motors after production problems. Repco fitted their own cast iron cylinder liners into the Oldsmobile blocks, which were also stiffened with two Repco magnesium alloy castings and feature Repco-designed cylinder heads with chain-driven single overhead camshafts. The internals of the unit consist of a bespoke Laystall crankshaft, Daimler connecting rods and specially cast pistons. The cylinder head design means that the engine’s exhaust pipes exit on the outer side of the block, and therefore pass through the spaceframe before tucking inside the rear suspension, a layout which complicated Tauranac’s design work considerably. The engine is water-cooled, with oil and water radiators mounted in the nose. The 620 engine was light for its time, weighing around 340 lb (154 kg), compared to 500 lb (227 kg) for the Maserati V12, but in 3 litre Formula One form only produced around 300 brake horsepower (220 kW) at under 8000 revolutions per minute (rpm), compared to 330–360 bhp (250–270 kW) produced by the Ferrari and Maserati V12s. However, it produced high levels of torque over a wide range of engine speeds from 3500 rpm up to peak torque of 233 pound feet (316 N·m) at 6500 rpm.Installed in the

he BT19 was not raced in serious competition after 1967. Brabham retired and moved back to Australia at the end of 1970. He retained ownership of the car until 1976, when it passed into the hands of Repco and was restored by the Repco Engine Parts Group. In 1986, Automotive Components Ltd. (ACL) was formed by the management buyout of Engine Parts Group, which included the transfer of the BT19 to the new company.

Since its restoration, the car has frequently been demonstrated at events, including the 1978 Australian Grand Prix at Sandown where Brabham was involved in a spirited demonstration with Juan Manuel Fangio driving his Mercedes-Benz W196. Brabham and the car also appeared at the first Australian Grands Prix to be held on the Adelaide (1985) and Melbourne (1996) street circuits. It also appeared at the 2004 Goodwood Revival meeting in the United Kingdom. ACL sold the car back to Repco in 2004. In 2008 the car was installed in the Australian National Sports Museum at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, on loan from Repco.

lightweight BT19 chassis, it was also relatively fuel efficient; on the car’s debut Brabham reported that the BT19 achieved 7 miles per gallon (40 L/100 km), against figures of around 4 mpg (70 L/100 km) for its “more exotic rivals”.[15] This meant that it could start a Grand Prix with only 35 gallons (160 L) of fuel on board, compared to around 55 gallons (250 L) for the Cooper T81-Maseratis.[12] The engine had one further advantage over bespoke racing engines: parts were cheap. For example, the engine blocks were available for GB£11 each and the connecting rods cost £7 each. The 740 series unit used in the three races for which the car was entered in 1967 has a different, lighter, Repcodesigned engine block. It also has redesigned cylinder heads which, among other improvements, mean that its exhausts are mounted centrally and do not pass through the spaceframe or rear suspension, unlike those of the 620 series. It produced a maximum of 330 bhp (250 kW). The BT19 was initially fitted with a Hewland HD (Heavy Duty) gearbox, originally designed for use with less powerful 2-litre engines. The greater power of the 3-litre Repco engine was more than the gearbox could reliably transmit when accelerating at full power from rest, with the result that Brabham normally made very gentle starts to avoid gearbox breakages. The HD was later replaced with the sturdier DG (Different Gearbox) design, produced at the request of both Brabham and Dan Gurney’s Anglo American Racers team. It later became a popular choice for other constructors. Wikipedia

Jack Hammers Home An Old Nail

I

n 1966 Australia’s Jack Brabham created motor racing history when he won the World Drivers’ Championship driving a car bearing his own name. His Brabham Repco V8 BT19 (affectionately known as “the old nail”) won four Grands Prix – (French, British, Dutch and German) and scored a 2nd and a 4th in the nine-race series against all-comers including Lotus and Ferrari. Why was the Australian car and driver so successful? Jack Brabham had the backing of a great Australian company, Repco. The 3-litre, single camshaft Type 620 V8 engine was based on the reliable Oldsmobile block,

the development of which was headed up by brilliant Australian engineer, Phil Irving. Another clever Australian, Ron Tauranac was responsible for the relatively simple, straightforward BT19 chassis – (it even had modified Triumph Herald uprights!) A fourth factor in the car’s success was the undoubted driving ability of Jack Brabham himself – three-time world champions are rare commodities. Why was the BT19 known as “the old nail”? By the time the 1966 Formula One season had come about, the BT19 chassis had been well and truly superseded. However, Brabham liked the feel of the “interim” chassis and reverted back to it for 1966. He also fitted the BT19 with a 2.5-litre Repco

V8 to contest the Tasman Series, and competed right here at Sandown for the 1966 Exide Cup. 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of Sir Jack Brabham’s unique achievement, and race fans will have the privilege of seeing the famous BT19 up close when it takes centre stage at Sandown on November 4-6. Sir Jack holds a special place with the organisers, the Victorian Historic Racing Register, as he was patron of the club up to the time of his death. It is also fitting that several other Brabham race cars will be competing in the 25th anniversary Historic Sandown meeting.

cars…. from a veteran 1904 Rambler…right up to a McLaren Formula 5000. He probably had his best successes in the 80’s and 90’s with sports cars. In fact …..in his Marcos, Roger scored the UK Classic Sports Car Championship…. 8 years running. There was also time for rallying - again with Margaret literally by his side as navigator - in an E Type Jag, an XK150 Jag and a couple of Volvos. You’ll see his Volvo 123 GT at his home today, being restored to it’s prime….. just as it was when Roger and Margaret drove the London to Sydney marathon…..their best result was that they managed to stay married! Over all these years, he never lost his enthusiasm for cars and the sport. Even up until 4 weeks ago, Roger was hard at work cementing the destiny of Formula Junior racing in Australia. He was gutted when he realised he wouldn’t be running alongside us at the Diamond Jubilee world series that started in January. He had prepared over the past couple of years by buying cars and motorhomes in Australia, England and America…..just so he wouldn’t miss an event. His enthusiasm has almost bankrupted a couple of us as we’ve tried to keep up with him. Now we’ll have to travel and run alone. Our cars will wear black tyres to honour him. Frankly, we could spend hours going through Roger’s Formula Junior and racing adventures - but he was such a media tart, that the world has already read about his exploits, with nauseating regularity.

Vale: Roger Ealand Eulogy transcript by Bill Hemming at Roger’s Funeral.... What a crowd! We needed to take heed of Roger’s credo…. we’re gonna need a bigger shed. I’m not surprised because we’re all here out of respect and admiration for a favourite man. Plus I’ve received many, many messages and kind words from people who couldn’t make it here today. But I AM impressed we all found our way here. Because the email notification sent out referred to ‘our beautiful Roger’ ….. the ‘beautiful’ bit really threw me. However, there are two other words we definitely attribute to our mate… BRILLIANT and PERFECT. These two words were the most constant words we heard from Roger over the past couple of years when we asked how things were going. His answer was always - ‘just BRILLIANT’ or ‘absolutely PERFECT’. Well, he lied ! Things were NOT brilliant, or perfect. But these words DO sum up Roger’s attitude, his lifestyle and his influence on those around him. To many of us here today, his brilliance was evident in our world of historic motor sport…. most recently as a top competitor, car restorer and President of the Australian Formula Junior Association. It all started, with Margaret by his side, when Roger’s race career kicked off about 55 years ago with an MG TC special at Lakeside. Both here and in the UK, he showed his trademark short attention span, and changed and competed in hundreds of different

Despite Roger’s love of racing, it was more about participating than winning. A few months ago, he took all his trophies - and there were hundreds of them - and threw them away in the council tip. A few days later, someone had collected them and brought them back home saying….it appears someone stole these…and we knew you’d want them back’ So racing was more about fulfilling his relentless, competitive nature….rather than the eventual result. Roger’s brave battle with cancer was a bit like his racing style…..with: Jumped start Ignored warning flags Cut corners Performance enhancing drugs……and he still couldn’t win! I’ll let others remind you of his other, very significant achievements. In horse riding - boat building - sailing - flying and business - including founding and running an international management and motivational consultancy - and building and running an award winning guest house. His life was so full and spectacular, there will probably be a book or film about it. Who will play our Roger in a movie ? I’m guessing it would the love child from a tryst between James Hunt and John Cleese. So rather than list all his good bits, I’d prefer to use this occasion to say some personal things, now that…. at last…. I’m safe from his smart arse comebacks. I was going to try and be theatrical, and open with the Monty Python song…..Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life....but there really is no need for cliché props… because Roger was his own, living, breathing, walking cliché! We remember him for always speaking in slogans, saying things like…‘I don’t do negative’ Continued page 50

Continued from page 46 ........ And...‘I’m concentrating on LIVING…not surviving’ Or ‘Even sick…I’m better than most others who are well’. For his own amusement….and mental stimulation.… he often told me that his mission in life, was to see how RUDE he could be to someone .... without upsetting or offending them. And by and large he succeeded. Only occasionally going just that little bit too far. He got away with it because of his extremely clever and quick brain, his humour, and his affected Pommie manner .… plus a spectacular dash of style and class. When I tried to copy him, he’d say…‘Bill you do and say things a bit like me …. but you do it with your fly undone’. Everyone here would have - at some time - been victim to his put downs…..or been beaten by him on the racetrack….but I’m certain that everyone here also felt privileged to have spent time with Roger. One of his excellent skills, was to make everyone he associated with, feel like they were a very good friend. But, despite being a natural motivator, Roger found it quite difficult to truly open up and dig deep into interpersonal relationships. Only last year, when I was complaining that my wife didn’t understand me, and asking for sincere advice on how to make her happy about my being away motor racing so often….his only contribution was to ask….. if we were still having sexual relations….. and if so, perhaps that was the problem! Most deep and meaningful subjects were batted away with a witticism or counter jab. Certainly, it took me many hours and many overseas trips where we were forcibly thrust together, before I could confidently claim a mutual friendship. It was a friendship that was built on inoffensive rudeness to each other. And a friendship that many onlookers, especially the Americans, did not understand. We had an absolute ball cavorting with our formula juniors, and with other like minded

Junior drivers…..across America, Europe, England, South Africa, New Zealand and the Nullabor. But in all that time, the only personal positive or compliment I ever got out of Roger was……’Bill, the best thing I can say about you, is that you have an excellent wife’. To be fair, he did know a thing or two about ‘excellent wives’. I don’t need to confirm just how devoted Margaret has been to the bugger over the years. I’m reminded of that joke…where the husband says –“I’m redoing my will, and I’m leaving everything to you’ and his wife replies - “you always do, you lazy sod’ But we really do need to acknowledge her devotion and love, especially during his time of sickness. Marg still found time to be a charming hostess to all Roger’s friends who found their way to Duranbah - and usually camped. She has simply been - outstanding. I recall sitting around a BBQ in a campsite outside of Barcelona, when after a few sangrias, I asked Roger who he believed was his best friend. He thought for a few minutes and mumbled something about a few people, then he lit up and said….I’d have to say – Margaret.

Only last month, I asked him what he wanted seen as his legacy. Roger, without hesitation, nominated his boys Justin and Adam. You guys must realise the pride and the peace your Dad found when he looked at you - and your families - and your lives. He reckoned he done real good. I need to read an extract from a letter that was doing the rounds on Facebook recently. This was written by a woman who died from cancer, to be read after her death. Some of the words must surely have been written by Roger himself…. Here goes… ‘I’m not in heaven, I’m here. But no longer in the crappy body that turned against me. So I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is, apparently, I’m dead. Good news is that you are most definitely not. Yes this sucks. It sucks beyond words, but I’m just so damn glad I lived a life so full of love, joy and amazing friends. I am lucky to honestly say that I have zero regrets and I spent every ounce of energy I had - living life to its fullest. I love you all and thank you for this awesome life.’ Well mate…we loved you too.

This was reinforced only two weeks ago when he was flirting with the nurses who were bathing him and filling him full of drugs. Some of his last words were…’you nurses are wonderful – but not as wonderful as my wife’.

A significant amount of joy and wonder has gone out of our world. But Roger would never forgive us if we didn’t go back to nature, and back to basics, and remember…. IT’S STILL A WONDERFUL WORLD.

Good on you Marg.

Or….as Roger would say, it may not be quite PERFECT, but it’s a BRILLIANT world.

Other genuine tid bits I managed to weedle out of the boy….. when pressed, he nominated his home at Duranbah as being his favourite project. And you can experience that special feeling of beauty and happiness in that gorgeous homestead that he and Marg built pretty much with their bare hands. Aah…the serenity!

So, for his sake, let’s celebrate Roger, and continue to enjoy it.

We’re off to his home after here so you’ll see for yourself. I also believe some of you want to say a few words about Roger when we get there, or as our friend Jeff Brown said ’hold

another drivers briefing. That should stuff up the serenity’.

2016 sees Isuzu Motors celebrate it’s 100th anniversary, making it Japan’s oldest vehicle manufacturer. Isuzu’s history started in 1916 when Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding & Engineering Company and Tokyo Gas and Electric Industrial Company joined for vehicle development and built it’s first car under licence with Wolseley Motors, United Kingdom, in 1918. By 1922, the Wolseley A9 was being locally produced, becoming the first passenger car built in Japan. The name Isuzu first appeared in 1934, being used on a government standard model truck. The name “Isuzu” came from the Isuzu River which is located near the factory where these models were built. In 1937, Automobile Industries merged with Tokyo Gas and Electric to form Tokyo Automobile Industries, and in 1949 the

company changed name to the current day Isuzu Motors Limited. 1963 saw the ground breaking Bellett model released to wide acclaim. The name “Bellett” came from another Isuzu built car, the larger Bellel, and Bellett was thought to mean “Bellel’s little sister”. The first Bellett 4 door sedans were imported to Australia in August 1964. The Wasp utility followed in November 1965, and the Bellett 1600GT coupe in April 1966. In the years between 1964 and 1970, 16,000 sedan’s, 290 GT’s and 122 Wasp’s were imported. Many other countries also imported Bellett’s with 170,737 being built in both left and right hand drive by the end of production in 1973. New Zealand and Canada also did local assembly of Bellett’s for some time, and while plans of doing the same in Australia were touted they never eventuated.

T

oday Stephen Gale is flying his Italian Marchetti S211 Jet Trainer, tail number 381.

This S211 was assembled in 1990, and is powered by a modern, efficient and very reliable Pratt and Whitney JT15-4 engine. This engine produces 2500 lb of thrust, which doesn’t translate to power directly, though is roughly equivalent to an 1800 HP engine. It has a maximum speed is 400 knots, or 740Km/hr. At full throttle it burns about 700 litres of JET fuel, which may seem like a lot, but is actually very efficient for this class aircraft. The S211 is pressurized and is capable of climbing to 42,000 feet. The last owner of this particular Marchetti S211 was the Republic of Singapore Air Force who used it train their pilots in Western Australia at RAAF base Pearce for the advanced stages of their pilot training prior to conversion to more challenging aircraft like the F16. They operated about 22 of these aircraft until 2008 when they were replaced by the Pilatous PC21. Stephen first saw this type of aircraft when a test pilot friend gave him a flight in the front of his. From that moment he was hooked though he didn’t know how to break the idea of buying a jet to his soon to be wife. To Claudia’s credit, she said, “you just need to buy one”. Stephen has flown virtually every weekend since then, and considers it one of the better things he has done in his life (other than marrying Claudia of course). Stephen is an ex RAAF Electronic Engineer, who has run his electronics design and build company Elektrika in Melbourne for over 10 years. His love of flying started after the RAAF out of a practical need to get to remote parts of Australia, where previous road trips had almost killed him.

Marchetti S211

He does not like admit that he is completely unable to catch a ball and is useless and most sports. Contrary to popular opinion however, this type of flying does not require outstanding hand eye co-ordination (certainly much less than car racing, historic or otherwise) which is a good thing. That said, he does a lot of training with the assistance of former RAAF and RAF fighter pilots, and regularly flies in formation with these pilots flying other jet aircraft. He recently formed Australia’s only jet based formation display team, Jetworks, which plans to launch later this year.

Formula Junior Diamond Jubilee World Tour - AUSTRALIA -

N

The Ron Tauranac Trophy

o International Formula has been more truly worldwide than Formula Junior, which celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2008/2009.

NZ Formula Junior Register, looked after by Nigel Russell, and FJHNA powered by Nick Grewal, covering the whole of North America from Canada to Mexico, are in their fourth season, and growing.

2016 marks the start of a 3-year Formula Junior World Tour, to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Formula Junior.

From 1958 to 1963 Formula Junior replaced the motorcycle engined 500 cc F3 cars as the stepping-stone to Formula 1. It was the brainchild of Italian Count ‘Johnny’ Lurani and provided for 1.0 or 1.1 litre production engines, and gearboxes in mini Grand Prix chassis. In its short 6 years, the design span covered the major progression of racing car evolution from ladder frame front-engined cars, through space frame cars with proprietary suspension like the Alexis HF1 [still raced today by FJHRA Coordinator Duncan Rabagliati], rear engined spaceframes such as the Coopers, to the full monocoque of the Lotus 27. Jim Clark, John Surtees, Jochen Rindt, Mike Spence, Mike Hailwood, Graf Wolfgang Von Trips, Gerhard Mitter, Lorenzo Bandini, Peter

The tour began in South Africa in January this year, and will also include sectors in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and North America, even including forays to Scandinavia and the Baltic States, before a grand celebration of 2 grids at the 2018 Silverstone Classic. In Europe, FJHRA has passed its 21st anniversary, in Australia, AFJA has a 10 year pedigree, which was under the vibrant helm of President, Roger Ealand, until cancer cruelly took him from us, and Kim Shearn is now ably acting in that role. Revson, Giancarlo Baghetti and Howden Ganley, were amongst the G.P. Stars who formulated their careers in FJ. Races were run from Estonia to Australia, Macao to Cuba, with hundreds of cars competing regularly across the USA and East and Western Europe. In 1975, Formula Junior was the first past formula to be revived as an historic series. The Formula Junior Historic Racing Association (“FJHRA”) was established in 1993. In 1995, the FIA Lurani Trophy for FJ cars became the first FIA Championship to be run by its own organisation. In 1997 the Formula Juniors first raced at Monaco and it was one of the closest races of the day and FJ have been competitors there since that time with a fantastic array of beautiful cars, recreating the era of the 1959-1963 era of Grand Prix Monaco Junior, and we feature again during the Diamond Jubilee years, starting with the front engined Juniors in 2016.

T

he origins of Rob Roy, Australia’s oldest purpose built hillclimb, go back to the1930’s. The first meeting was held in 1937, and the following year Rob Roy was the venue for the first Victorian and Australian hill climb Championships.

Situated in picturesque Christmas Hills it is a short scenic drive from metropolitan Melbourne . Devastated by bushfires in 1962 it was resurrected by the MG Car Club in 1992 and has been going strong ever since. Hillclimbing is one of the oldest forms of motor sport and many of Australia’s top drivers were hillclimb champions in their day. No fewer than eight Australian Grand Prix winners were record holders at Rob Roy. The promoters of Rob Roy would encourage you and your Club to participate in our full calendar of events either as a competitor or a spectator group. Victorian Hillclimb Championship This event is promoted and conducted by the MGCC and is one of seven in the series. Championship events attract the fastest competition vehicles, many purpose built for hill climbing. Victorian Historic Racing Register - Historic Rob Roy This event, usually in April, is promoted by the VHRR and conducted by the MGCC. VHRR members have a fabulous collection of older competition vehicles that competed at Rob Roy in the good old days and are still going strong. Interclub Challenge Series These events are held at various times during the year. The Series was instigated in 1996 to promote friendly rivalry between the local sporting car Clubs. Many Clubs have supported the event, with several including the Series in rounds of their own Club Championships. This Series consists of three Rounds and a trophy is awarded to the Club that accumulates the most points based on the following system.

Come & Try Day This is a unique event open to all drivers and was instigated to encourage Club level motorsport and more particularly hillclimbing. No previous experience is necessary. You do not need to hold a Competition Licence or be a member of a car club. A temporary CAMS “Come & Try “ licence and MG Car Club, one day - membership can be purchased on the day. There are basic safety requirements required for all vehicles which can be followed up on the website if you are interested in participating. Historic & Classic This November event, promoted and conducted by the MGCC is the premier event for the year. All catering proceeds go to the local Panton Hill CFA that the MGCC is a great supporter of. The event usually has a theme or attracts a Guest of Honour from the world of motor sport. Vehicles that participate are drawn from the VHRR, VSCC and MGCC together with some of the more modern era. The meeting engenders a wonderful picnic atmosphere and provides a great opportunity for Clubs to put themselves and their vehicles on display in a designated area. Rob Roy is located in Clintons Road Christmas Hills and is best approached from the Eltham - Yarra Glen Road. Melway ref 265 A9. Check the website www.robroyhillclimb.com.au for dates of yearly events. Competition & Entry enquiries: Ken Price 0418 311 040 General enquiries: Wayne Rushton 0412 339 934

Vintage Sports Car Club – Vintage Rob Roy This is event, usually in August, is promoted by the VSCC and conducted by the MGCC. VSCC members have anything from Edwardian vehicles to the classics of yesteryear, manufactured prior to 1940, which either compete or attend as part of a magnificent display.
