President’s Welcome 2019 Historic Sandown

W

elcome one and all to Historic Sandown 2019, “28 Years of Thunder”.

This is the 28th year of this event promoted by the VHRR, and it’s great to see so many people taking part in the true spirit of Historic Racing at Sandown. This year sees an entry of some 320 plus cars represented in all historic categories. There will be some very exciting racing in all groups over the weekend, and also some great cars on display on the concourse, in the public areas surrounding the pits, and in The “Red Hill’ spectator area at the Dandenong Road Corner of the circuit. A free shuttle bus will operate between the main gate and Red Hill at regular intervals. On behalf of VHRR I extend a warm welcome to all of the competitors, and particularly those who have come from interstate, to support this meeting. It is fantastic to see so many of you make such an effort to come to Sandown. This year is the 50th anniversary of Formula Ford and we have a full grid of these cars competing and we will no doubt see some excellent racing from this group. There is a grid of the ever popular Group C & A Touring cars and 2 grids of Grp N Touring cars, another crowd favourite, as well as a large entry of Grp S cars. I am certain we will see many fantastic events over the weekend.

I also want to extend special thanks to all of the volunteer officials who have supported this meeting, including those from VHRR, MG Car Club, Vic Flag Marshalls, Vic Scrutineers, Fire and Rescue, and Medical response. Particular thanks to our long serving Clerk of Course, David Vernall, and his very experienced team in Race Control. Thanks also to Melbourne Racing Club for the magnificent presentation of the venue for our event. Thank you also to our very loyal sponsors, SHANNONS, COOLDRIVE, PENRITE, MUSTANG MOTORSPORT, and all the other sponsors who have advertised with us in the program, or who have set up a trade stand at this event. Please take the time to look at all the trade stands and support the sponsors that support Historic Racing. Without our sponsors we simply would not be able to run such great events. Finally, on behalf of the VHRR I would like to thank our Chairman of the Sandown Race Committee, Noel Robson, his race committee, and the MG Car Club of Victoria for the long hours and effort they put in to organize this great event. Enjoy your weekend Ian Tate VHRR President

I wish you all a safe and enjoyable weekend of Historic Motor Racing.

The Victorian Historic Racing Register sincerely thanks the sponsors & advertisers for their valuable support and commitment to the successful running of Historic Sandown. Without the support of these organisations the staging of this event would not be possible. The VHRR would like to thank V8RACE for their supply of course vehicles.

PATRON

T

he Historic Sandown Race Committee & the Victorian Historic Racing Register welcomes & thanks John Harvey for agreeing to be Patron of this meeting. His illustrious career speaks for itself..... Despite being regarded as one of the best Speedcar drivers in Australia, Harvey switched from speedway to road racing in 1964 following the deaths of a few friends in Speedcar racing, as well as a contentious 6-month suspension received from the Sydney-based National Speedcar Club officials after he was alleged to spin fellow driver Al Staples in a scratch race at the Sydney Showground Speedway. Although this decision was later reverted to no suspension at the drivers meeting, Harvey decided to opt out of Speedway to go road racing. He would make a short lived comeback to racing speedcars in 1974 at the Liverpool Speedway in western Sydney after the track promoters changed the 440-metre (480 yd) D-shaped oval from a dirt track to a bitumen track, once again racing for the same car owner he had in the 1960s, Ronald Mackay. Harvey drove cars such as the Austin Cooper S and Brabham BT14 Ford 1.5 litre. Harvey won the 1966 Australian 1½ Litre Championship in the Brabham and in the same year finished runner up in the Australian Drivers’ Championship for 2.5 litre Australian National Formula cars in the same car, competing against much more powerful machinery. Also winning the NSW 1.5 litre Road Racing Championship. He began an involvement with Bob Jane’s racing team in 1967 and moved to Melbourne. Harvey won the 1971 and 1972 Australian Sports Car

Championships driving the McLaren M6B Repco V8 for Bob Jane. He drove Jane’s Repco V8 powered Holden Torana in Sports Sedan racing in the early 1970s, winning both the Toby Lee Series at Oran Park and the Marlboro Series at Calder Park Raceway in 1973. In 1976 John Harvey won the first round of the Australian Touring Car Championship in a one-off drive in a B&D Autos-sponsored Torana L34 at Symmons Plains. Later in the year Harvey was signed up to co-drive with Colin Bond in the Holden Dealer Team Torana L34 which finished a close second in the Bathurst 1000. The race winning #7 Holden was accidentally credited with an extra lap, putting it ahead of the #1 Holden. The error was picked up after the race and the relevant race official offered the Holden Dealer Team, the official factory team, the right to appeal. However, the #7 car was entered by Ron Hodgson Motors, one of Holden’s biggest dealerships. The Holden hierarchy decided it would be good ‘politic’ to let Bob Morris and British sportscar racer John Fitzpatrick keep the win. Holden apologised to John Harvey for this at a testimonial dinner in 2002. With Bond leaving the Holden team at the end of 1976, Harvey then became the lead driver for the 1977 season. In 1978 Peter Brock re-joined the Holden Dealer Team and became No.1 driver with Harvey driving the No.2 car. This established the pattern for almost a decade. The Harvey car effectively becoming Brock’s backup, notably winning the 1978 Rothmans 500 event at Oran Park teamed with Charlie O’Brien. 1980 Peter Brock took over the Holden Dealer Team, deciding John Harvey would not contest the ATCC races and contest only the endurance races at the end of the year. Peter Brock teamed with John Harvey 1980 1981 for the CRC 300, winning both. This arrangement continued until the advent of Group A in Australia in 1985, though Harvey did run in rounds of the 1984 ATCC, driving Brock’s #05 when Brock and Perkins were attempting to win Le Mans. Harvey would then run selected rounds in the 1985 ATCC, as well as rounds of the 1986 ATCC. John Harvey’s biggest win came with the HDT at the 1983 James Hardie 1000. Originally to be partnered with Brock’s brother Phil, Harvey qualified his #25 Holden VH Commodore (the car in which Brock and Perkins had won the 1982 race) in 5th place (Brock claimed pole in #05). After just eight laps, Brock’s car blew its engine, seemingly putting him and Perkins out of the race. However, due to the pair being cross-entered in #25, Brock and Perkins then took over from Harvey for the rest of the race (leaving Phil Brock without a drive). The race win was controversial at the time as many felt Brock and Perkins should not have been allowed to move into the HDT’s second car after theirs retired. Under race rules at the time however, cross-entering was allowed and had actually been used in previous 1000’s, though this was the first time drivers had moved from one car to another and had gone on to win the race. Harvey would go on to finish second at Bathurst the following year in the last race for the Group C touring cars in what was a 1-2 form finish for the Dealer Team with Brock/Perkins bringing in their VK Commodore home first in front of Harvey’s co-driver, 25-year old Tasmanian David Parsons. Harvey would finish 2nd again two years later for the HDT. Driving a VK Commodore SS Grp A, he teamed with HDT driver/engineer Neal Lowe to finish second behind the Commodore of Allan Grice and Graeme Bailey. Harvey won the 1986 Pukekohe 500 with Neal Lowe in their new Group A SS VK Commodore, and the pair

finished second to HDT teammates Brock and Allan Moffat at the 1987 Nissan 500 Wellington. Harvey split with Brock by 1987, being unhappy with Brock’s flirtation with ‘New Age’ ideas like his ‘Energy Polariser’. Harvey told his side of the story of the split in Bill Tuckey’s 1987 book The Rise and Fall of Peter Brock. In March 1987 Harvey teamed up with Allan Moffat to drive their HDT built (and covertly bought by Moffat) Holden VL Commodore SS Group A to victory in the first round of the 1987 World Touring Car Championship at the famous Monza circuit in Italy. After finishing seventh, the pair were promoted as the first six BMW Motorsport backed BMW M3’s were disqualified from the race for being some 50–80 kg underweight (after a protest from a privateer M3 team, the works M3’s were found to have been fitted with lightweight carbon-fibre and kevlar body panels). Later at the Spa 24 Hours in August, Moffat and Harvey achieved a class win and finished 4th outright behind the works BMW Team M3’s. Sydney driver Tony Mulvihill had also been listed to drive the #5 Rothmans sponsored Commodore at Spa, though he was caught out by the notorious Ardennes weather in qualifying and failed to qualify for the race. This forced Moffat and Harvey to drive the 24 hours with just the two of them while most other teams used at least 3 drivers. After Moffat abandoned the Commodore in favor of Andy Rouse’s Ford Sierra RS500, Harvey missed the 1987 James Hardie 1000 which was a round of the WTCC. It was the first Bathurst race Harvey had missed since 1972. The race was also the 9th and last Bathurst 1000 win for his longtime teammate Peter Brock. Harvey’s last Bathurst 1000 was in 1988 where he teamed with Kevin Bartlett in a Holden VL Commodore SS Group A SV to finish in 14th after qualifying 22nd. Early in the race, Harvey had been dicing with Brock, now racing a BMW M3. Harvey almost didn’t get to drive in the 1988 race. At the g for the Tom Walkinshaw time he was working own ed d Holden Special Speciial Vehicles Vehiicles Veh l and owned W Wal ki sha kin aw had had a rule rule ul that that barring barrin bar ring g himself, hims imself elf,, Walkinshaw ssenior sen ior management m nag ma geme e nt could em cou not participate pa in dan da anger g ous activities activ ac tiv ivities itities such such as as being bein e ng a race race dangerous

driver. Walkinshaw finally relented and let Harvey race at Bathurst, originally offering him the lead driver role in the HSV team’s 3rd car, something which Harvey turned down stating that “I had been the number two behind Brock for eight years and I wasn’t about to become the number three”. During Round 7 of the 1988 Australian Touring Car Championship at Sandown, and despite being part of the management team at HSV, Harvey was on hand to be part of Allan Moffat’s team for the weekend (complete with a Moffat team ANZ Bank jacket). From 1988 Moffat was racing a Ford Sierra RS500 built by Swiss ace Reudi Eggenberger. Ironically, Harvey’s old HDT teammate Larry Perkins though his Perkins Engineering was running the factory backed Holden team in the 1988 ATCC under the name of Holden Special Vehicles. In February 1988, Harvey drove the new VL Commodore SS Group A SV which was the pace car driver for the first ever NASCAR race held outside of North America, the Goodyear NASCAR 500 held at the then new, A$54 million Calder Park Thunderdome in Melbourne. Following the 1988 Tooheys 1000, John Harvey retired from competitive motor sport to concentrate on his work with Holden and HSV. In 2018 CAMS awarded Australian racing legend John Harvey a place in the Motor Sport Hall of Fame. Photos 1. Warwick Farm 1971 2. Liverpool Speedway 1980 3. Oran Park 1966 4. he ‘Dyno’ Dave Bennett autobiography is one of the great success stories of the Australian high performance automotive industry. Fuelled by an innate interest in things mechanical, Dyno Dave was destined to work in an industry based on that interest. Over a lifetime of intense work he established one of the great Australian automotive businesses, Perfectune–Yella Terra. He purchased a new 186 HR HOLDEN Premier sedan in 1967 that he upgraded and called the ’Sprint GT’ with the intention of making an ‘up market’ car with spectacular performance, to be sold through a local Holden Dealer. This car created much media attention. Holden were especially interested in the boosted performance and had discussions with Dave, eventually leading to the development of the famous XU1 Torana. Subsequently the introduction of the Yella Terra heads for Holden 6 and V8 engines, of which some 250,000 were sold. From a performance perspective, Perfectune’s connections and resulting contract with HOLDEN for cylinder head services, was

pivotal in the development of the business. Dave had the foresight to spend money on highly productive capital equipment, developing a small operation into a significant business. In the early days, Dave drag raced many successful cars. He was the first to run a Holden Monaro GTS 327 at Calder Park Drag strip in 1968, one week after release. is car was undefeated in all but one run in 18 months of competing in Victoria, NSW and Queensland events. He was the first to win the National Points Championship in 1969, later called ‘Mr Drag Racer’ . He then retired from racing to concentrate on the business. He was in a way ‘an unsung back room supplier’ to a great many racers and car enthusiasts for many years. ‘Dyno’ Dave, The Yella Terra Story is a ‘must read’ for all high performance auto enthusiasts. FURPHY COLLECTION

FARREN BICYCLE COLLECTION

MOTOR MUSEUM COLLECTION

Shepparton has a long history of driving; it is the home of the original Driver Education Centre Australia (DECA), is a major Australian transport hub carrying the produce of the region throughout the country and has one of Australia’s highest levels of collector car ownership. The museum is a living collection and is constantly growing to help ensure our motoring history is preserved for future generations. As well as regular exhibitions throughout the year, a new selection from the collection is curated for display four times per year. The Shepparton Motor Museum and Collectibles is home to up to 100 classic, heritage and muscle cars including motorcycles and vintage bicycles. Volvos are definitely Andy’s weapon of choice he having prepared and driven Volvo 122’s in forest rallies, Targa Tasmania and now in historic racing. The Volvo 122 may seem an odd choice for a racing car however in their era (early ‘60’s) they proved to be both fast and reliable winning the 1962 & 1963 European Rally Championships. Volvo #12 features a 1990cc 4 cylinder motor, 4 speed close ratio straight-cut gear set, Laycock overdrive and 4.88:1 LSD. Recent improvements include fitting YellaTerra developed roller rockers and improved exhaust so the Volvo should acquit itself well at the Sandown circuit this weekend. Meet Dave at the High Performance Products Stand behind the Concourse here today.

Preview - Sandown For all Historic racing fans, Historic Sandown is one of the coolest meetings on the calendar. But this year’s edition is going to be that little bit cooler for me. Since the 2016 Historic Sandown meeting, I’ve been helping Eric Bellamy, who has been running a 1980 Wren Formula Ford. This year, I’ll still be helping with work on that car, but I’ll also be driving a 1985 Daveric Formula Vee, which many of you would’ve seen at lots of historic race meetings being driven by Conor Ryan. Conor has driven this car very well over the years he has been racing it, collecting many race wins at various events. Thanks to an incredibly generous gesture by Conor, my dream of racing historic cars is coming true! Josh Lowing - Daveric Formula Vee

The Elfin Type 620 was based primarily on the earlier successful Type 600 chassis with modifications improving overall chassis rigidity. A Mk 9 Hewland four speed gearbox also replaced the original Mk 8 Hewland gearbox (Formula Ford) which allowed the fitment of “inboard” disc brakes to reduce “unsprung” weight as well as fitting universal joints to replace the Rotoflex couplings used on the Type 600. In total 20 Type 620 cars were produced which include Formula 2 and Formula 3 variants along with Formula Ford. The first car was manufactured in 1972 with 6 in 1973, 5 in 1974 and 7 620B’s in 1975. Distribution of the 620’s include two being exported to the Philippines, four to the American Elfin agent and one to New Zealand with the remaining cars sold “locally”. This Lotus 18 was one of the only three original Lotus factory cars imported “in the day” to Australia by Paul Sammuel. More recently, the current custodian, Kim Shearn, has campaigned the car in South Africa, New Zealand and throughout Europe since 2010. In the early 1960’s Tim Schenken owned the car and won the Australian Formula Junior Championship and then a Victorian Championship the year after. Kim has subsequently won the Australian FJ Historic Championship and has had numerous class wins overseas during the last 9 years. Originally owned by Jack Hunnam, who was a well known Victorian competitor and race engineer. The car has always been in Australian ownership and thus is a true piece of our racing history. Original in every respect and still running a Ford 1100cc engine with Renault gearbox as detailed on the original build sheet. The Lotus 18 was arguably the most successful chassis ever built as it is still the only type to have won World Championships in three different classes.....Formula Junior, Formula Two and, ultimately, Formula one! A truely iconic racing car that captured the heart of many enthusiasts due to being the first rear engined Lotus and extremely successful on the global stage. Stirling Moss at Monaco springs to mind! Kim Shearn - Lotus 18

HQ 70 is an immaculately presented 1974 Holden Kingswood purchased by Michael Ling Racing’s Team Owner and Driver, Michael Ling, some 20 years ago. It raced competitively in a different livery for 10 years before being garaged for the next 8 years. Michael decided to rebuild the car from the ground up some two years ago with the help of the team’s sponsors, and has achieved many accolades in its time, including numerous Best Presented awards, top ten finishes at State level, as well as competing at Australia’s famous Bathurst circuit. Today, HQ 70 competes at various events with thanks to its sponsors, ELift Home Elevators, Stevie’s Restorations and Smash Repairs, and, CJS Heating and Cooling, and its dedicated crew including Michael Ling (Team Owner/Driver), Steve Vassallo (Paint/Panel), Tony Morrison (Mechanical), John Billing (Media), and David Bedwell (Catering). Colin Bond built the car for the later half of the 88 season and finished third with Alan Jones in the 88 Bathurst. Colin campaigned the car from 88-92 and for Bathurst in 92 build a brand new car then leased the old car for that race. At the end of the 92 season the car was sold to O’Brien Aluminum and campaigned as a sports sedan with a mid mounted Buick engine. Fast forward a few years and Chris Stillwell bought the car as a rolling shell and a four year restoration began. The body shell was acid dipped and the team at Bindigo cash did all the repairs and paint. After paint, I (Euan McDonald at Classic Motorsport) restored the drive line and assembly of the car. When Colin campaigned the car it went through a few different Caltex livery’s but the one that stood out for Chris was the 88 Bathurst. Chris Stillwell - Ford Sierra

As a kid I lived in Mulgrave and attended all the Sandown car race events. I would watch all the greats Beechey, Blanchard, Moffatt, Bond, Brock, Jane etc. I would watch as a 12 yo dreaming of racing but never really thinking I ever would. I can still remember the combined smell of tyres, brakes and fuel being the most magnificent smell in the world, and the sound was a symphony to me. I have always loved cars, loved working on them, being challenged by new problems to try to keep my old wrecks going on a shoe string whilst at Uni. I am not a mechanic but love tinkering with old cars, I have a collection which I am always adding to and playing with. This is my 6th year of racing, I left it quite late starting when I was 59. I won Rookie of the year with my club, HTCAV. I have since managed a few class wins forever tuning my car to be better. My race mechanic Nick Cascone is amazing and has taught me a lot about not just the car but driving as well. I am fortunate to have a supportive wife Leonie who does not want to see the bills for the car and is a great encouragement for me to do better. Robert van Stokrom - BMW 2002

Tino Leo - Monaro GTS 350 The Monaro is a Bob Jane Monaro (which we owned for 30+ years) replica that we purchased from Kent Youlden. It was the first Group Nc car to race in Victoria. We won numerous races in the early 2000’s the Adelaide Clipsal support race the highlight. We sold the car to Jim Hunter in Sydney where it hardly raced and it found its way back to Melbourne a few years back and we re-purchased it again in May 2017. We have restored back to how it was when we previously owned it and it is still a capable front running car. Tino Leo Tino has been part of the racing landscape in Australia since 1969 racing in categories from Speedway, Improved Production, Sports Sedan and Historic Touring Cars. He started in Speedway racing a very quick Holden EH and then progressed to Bitumen racing in Improved Production in a FX Holden scoring pole position in his first race and finishing 2nd. Tino then raced a Mini in the Mini Series and was later put in against Sports Sedans such was his speed. Tino then went onto Sports Sedans in the ex Malcolm Ramsey 4 door Monaro racing against the likes of Bob Jane, Jim Richards, Bryan Thomson, Allan Moffat and Peter Brock and as a privateer held his own. A highlight being a 2nd place in the Marlboro Series behind Peter Brock who was driving the Bob Jane Monaro.

Tino then purchased the Bob Jane Monaro from Phil Ward in the early 80’s which he owned and raced for 30 odd years winning numerous Sports Sedan races around the country, including competing at the Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide & Bathurst. Tino always had a fondness for the Appendix J racing and so purchased the ex Barry Jupp Mustang again racing with great success in this category. His duels with John Mann are still a talking point. Racing both the Mustang & the Jane Monaro took its toll and he regrettably sold the Monaro to Des Wall which was not long ago restored back to its Touring Car Spec . Tino then took a break from racing and the Mustang was sold to Graham Hunt and was eventually purchased and raced successfully by Michael Miceli. Itchy feet soon got the better of him and he returned to Historic Touring Cars with the ex Garry Rodgers Mustang which he again raced successfully with the absolute stand out being the last Grand Prix in Adelaide support race which he and John Mann put on a incredible race earning Tino the Driver of the Meeting Trophy. The Mustang is still racing today in the hands of John Clarke. Tino now into his mid 70’s still enjoys his racing and hasn’t lost the passion for a “hobby” that’s has lasted 50 years. When the helmet goes on, the fire is still as bright as his beloved Monaro! Dom Leo

FOR SALE RALT RT4 FORMULA ATLANTIC Andrew McCarthy offers for sale his 1982 Ralt RT4, chassis #354. This well maintained and developed iconic racing car was first delivered by Ralt in the UK to USA SCCA owner and racer Dan Carmichael. A long and successful competition history in Australian Group R historic racing commenced when ownership passed to Richard Carter in 2002, continuing to the current day following purchase by Andrew McCarthy in 2007. Developments to the car over time have included factory update to 1983 rear-end specification by Ralt in the UK, chassis stiffening by the renowned Bahner Engineering in the US and, most recently in 2015, a complete chassis rebuild by Borland Engineering in Melbourne, including new outer & inner skins. Powered by a strong (half-timed) Peter Brennan-maintained Ford Cosworth BDD Jennings engine, this is an excellent and competitive example of one of these sought after and very successful racing cars which achieved worldwide dominance over many years in the 1980s. Full history, including log books, details of work done and CAMS COD are included. In ready-to-race condition, the car is also offered for sale with spares and a trailer. The

T

he Patrick Ryan Trophy has been commissioned by the VHRR in memory and honour of one of the club’s most prominent members. Only 66 when he passed away earlier this year, Pat was involved in many committees, eligibility matters concerning historic cars and a fierce competitor at many events. This trophy will be awarded to the entrant, not necessarily the winner, but deemed to have competed in the true spirit of historic racing. The trophy has been suggested by his friend Shane Bowden of Select OwnersCorp Management and constructed by his good friend and mentor Greg Smith who paid the following, very appropriate, tribute: Patrick was keen, always keen. He began early in his motoring endeavours and was mentored by his father Patrick and his uncles. He began with motorkhanas, hillclimbs and sprints with the MG Car Club but very quickly tired of these and decided to be a racing man, and a racing man he became! Patrick aspired to build his own racing car. It had to be an MG TC and it had to be supercharged - he would fill in the rest.

Using all their wiles and under driving the blower at only 18 lb boost the boys found the sweet spot in both performance and handling and Paddy was away on a stellar pre-war class racing career, running consistently high in this car, ably supported by Johnny Noble, for nearly 40 seasons. He dabbled in open wheelers, the Cameron, and a Brabham, but always gravitated back to proper racing cars with the engines in the front, the TA, the Elgarem Jaguar, and latterly the Demmitt Fueling Special in which he still holds a Winton lap record. Our Patrick, strong, upright, fair, compassionate and loving. A son, a brother, a husband and a father and in all things a family man. A liver and lover of life and all its bounties. Tireless and true as a man and a friend. My friend. A starter, a fierce competitor, a gracious loser and a humble winner. His race fair run, he is taken way too early. With fondest memories, rest easy mate, Smithy

Learning was hands on and questions from his elders like “how much ring gap did you give it?” or “What was the bearing nip?” met with blank stares from our Paddy, but he soon learnt and started to finish prodigiously powerful engines - small bores, but 30 lb boost, the fastest grenades on the track!! The bus boys at the Depot helped him build a body which Patrick was very proud of and we all thought he was the bravest of drivers 140 horsepower and 19” wheels!! Patrick progressed to 16” wheels and relative safety, then, with the help of Les Cooper went chronologically back to the Pre-war Group and built the TA special.

Vince Gucciardo - MG C GT V8

Vince Gucciardo began racing in 2015 having been an active participant in various track days and having a love for racing. His chariot began life as a 1968 MG C GT 6 cylinder, after an accident it was converted to the much loved Rover V8 and after Vince took ownership of the vehicle in 2017 has developed it to the car you see today. The car runs a Holinger 6 Speed gearbox, 5.0 Rover V8 running a Holley carburetor, MoTeC dashboard and big slicks from Dunlop. Vince has been inspired by Aston Martin in choosing the colours for his vehicle and is reminiscent of the Le Mans DBR9 cars. Vince was the 2015 MG Racing Rookie of the Year and comes off the back of two race wins at the Festival of Speed in August against series leader Philip Chester. Vince currently lies 2nd overall for the 2019 season in MG Racing which finishes its season at Sandown this weekend and loves the camaraderie and atmosphere of the VHRR events. Vince is more than happy to share his pride and joy with fellow enthusiasts so head down and have a look at the #12 MG Photo Chris Carter.

Paul Atkins - GT Cortina

Car was built as a race car in 1983 by Lloyd Cleaver in NSW and the car started its racing career. It was built up from a 240 2 door body and was built to GT specifications with the remote shifter and larger GT brakes. Stainless steel panel mouldings from a four door GT were then adapted to suit the 2 door. Car started life as white with a blue stripe. Lloyd raced the car for 4 years and raced it at Amaroo, Oran Park, Lakeside, Sandown, Winton and Surfers before selling it in 1987 to Rhys Davies in NSW who raced it at Amaroo and Oran Park during 1987 and 1988. In 1989 Rhys sold the car to Ian Wells in Victoria who then proceeded to race it at Winton in 1989 and then sold it to David Segal in Victoria. David ran the car from 1989 through to 1995 at Calder, Phillip Island, Winton, Sandown. David sold the car in 1995 to Dominic Leo (son of Tino Leo) In the mid nineties colour was changed to white with a gold stripe. Dom ran the car from 1995 through to 1998 and raced at Phillip Island, Sandown, Winton before selling to myself Paul Atkins in1998 from South Australia The car runs a 1500 cc Kent block bored out to 1598cc with a Datsun steel crank, Wade camshaft forged pistons and Lotus rods. Induction is from a pair of 45mm Weber carburettors and the engine puts out 148HP at 7800 rpm. Gearbox is a Ford 4 speed with a set of close ratio Quaife straightcut gears and steel synchros. This runs back to an original style differential with a Quaife LSD that runs either 4:4 ratio or 4:7 ratio depending on the race track.

Background to 50 Years of Formula Ford in Australia

T

he Formula Ford category was established in Great Britain in 1967, as an entry level category, and two years later Australia’s first Formula Ford race was staged at the Sandown circuit in Victoria. A national series was contested in Australia for the first time in 1970 and then annually through to 1992. In the following year the series was granted national title status by CAMS and officially became the Australian Formula Ford Championship. After having powered Australian Formula Fords since the introduction of the category, the 1600cc Ford “Kent” engine was replaced by the Ford Fiesta unit for the 2006 Australian Championship. The “Kent” powered cars continued to be raced in various State championships under the “Formula Ford 1600” category name. In recent years, there has been an enormous worldwide growth in “historic”

Formula Ford, this being for cars manufactured before 1990. This has created the situation where many of the older drivers are now back on the track again, enjoying racing the cars they did in their day. In Australia, major historic meetings like the Phillip Island Classic, see full grids of 55 historic Formula Fords, including cars and drivers from all over the world. The national FF series has served as a stepping stone for many Australian racing drivers who have gone on to greater things in motor racing both in Australia and overseas. Notably, 1971 winner Larry Perkins went on to race in the Formula One World Championship and other winners Russell Ingall, Craig Lowndes, Garth Tander and Jamie Whincup have each gone on to claim V8 Supercar titles. Other graduates of Australian Formula Ford include Brad Jones, Marcos Ambrose, Tomas Mezera,

Jason Bright, Steven Richards, David Besnard, Will and Alex Davison, and ninetime Formula One race winner Mark Webber finished third in the F1 World championship on three occasions. Formula Ford has also proven a popular proving ground for Australian racing car manufacturers. In its early years the series was dominated by Australian designs from Elfin Sports Cars, Bowin Cars, Mawer and Birrana. 1987 to 1997 was dominated by the British marques Van Diemen and Reynard, winning eleven straight titles. The streak was broken in 1998 by Australian marque Spectrum, built by Borland Racing Developments. Van Diemen faded in the mid-2000s and Australian grids are now almost exclusively filled with Spectrums and French made Mygales

In the late 60’s, after returning to Australia from a period working as a mechanic on the Brabham Team, I founded a company called Aztec Racing to build race cars. The first car was a Formula Ford, which ran in the inaugural FF race at Sandown on November 9th 1969. The car ran third, ably driven by Bob Minogue - see program page below. A few years ago I “re acquired” that car (AR8-1 ) and have been restoring it to race condition for the 50th Anniversary of its debut event at Sandown. I wanted to ask if there is a way to ensure an entry for this car for the October meeting, as I am sure there will be a long list of potential competitors. As you may be aware, Aztec Racing sponsored the inaugural event “The Aztec Racing Formula Ford Challenge” and I have suggested to the VHRR, (through John van Leeuwin) that I would be happy to provide a trophy for another “Aztec Racing FF Challenge” 50 years later. Regards, Allan Ould

Retired sawmiller, started doing motorsport stuff early 70s, bought our Escort 1977 and raced it for a couple of years, mainly Sydney and Surfers, sold the car end of 1978, and retired from the sport to start a family. Started doing hillclimbs and sprints again around 1998, and around 2008, managed to buy our escort back, after being out of our care for 30 years, and have been running it at varied events since then. 1970 Mk1 Escort V8 sports sedan. I bought this car minus engine and g/ box 1977, and fitted a 302W engine, top loader g/box and Borg Warner diff, raced it for a couple of years, then sold it in 1978. 30 years later we bought it back, mechanically the same as when we sold it. Since then, it’s been restored to how it looked in 1978, and now have a historic log book for it as a group U sports sedan. I’m lucky to have all the log books for this car since being log booked in 1975. It’s been a great car and has a lot of history. Garry Ford - Mk1 Escort V8

At the age of 16 Andrew sparked his interest with racing through motocross. By 18 years he had worked his way up to A grade at his local mx club. A few broken bones later and it was time to move from 2 to 4 wheels. Andrew gave karting a go for 6 months before a chance meeting with Spud Wood during a V8 experience drive at Sandown got him into HQs (2012). In 2014 Andrew started racing for Middy’s Data and Electrical and is still sporting the pink today. It was in 2016 when Andrew got himself his first podium finish and in 2018 was lucky enough to be invited to co-drive alongside Warren Trewin and Adam Lowndes at the Phillip Island 6 hour Australian production car race where they finished in 2nd place for their class. August of this year saw Andrew cement his first race win at Winton Motor raceway (a clean sweep for the weekend with wins in all 3 races and the fastest race lap) and in September he landed himself in 2nd overall for the HQ nationals at The Bend. Currently sitting in 2nd place for the Victorian HQ championship Andrew hopes to round out this year with his first championship win leaving him with his best season yet. Andrew Magilton - Holden HQ
