President’s Welcome 2017 Historic Sandown

W

elcome one and all Welcome one and all to Historic Sandown 2017, “26 Years of Thunder”. This is the 26th year of this event promoted by the VHRR, and is its great to see so many people taking part in the true spirit of Historic Racing at Sandown.

Club, Vic Flag Marshalls, Vic Scrutineers, Fire and Rescue, and Medical response. Particular thanks to our long serving Clerk of Course, David Vernall, and his very experienced team in Race Control. Thanks also to Melbourne Racing Club for the magnificent presentation of the venue for our event. Thank you also to our very loyal sponsors, SHANNONS, COOLDRIVE, PENRITE, BURSON, AUTOBARN, HSV, MUSTANG MOTORSPORT, and all the other sponsors who have advertised with us in the program, or who have set up a trade stand at this event. Please take the time to look at all the trade stands and support the sponsors who support Historic Racing. Without our sponsors we simply would not be able to run such great events.

This year sees an entry of some 330 plus cars represented in all historic categories. There will be some very exciting racing in all groups over the weekend, and also some great cars on display on the concourse, in the public areas surrounding the pits, and in The “Red Hill’ spectator area at the Dandenong Road Corner of the circuit. A free shuttle bus will operate between the main gate and Red Hill at regular intervals.

Finally, on behalf of the VHRR I would like to thank our Chairman of the Sandown Race Committee, Noel Robson, his race committee, and the MG Car Club of Victoria for the long hours and effort they put in to organize this great event.

On behalf of VHRR I extend a warm welcome to all of the competitors, and particularly those who have come from overseas and interstate, to support this meeting. It is fantastic to see so many of you make such an effort to come to Sandown.

Enjoy your weekend This year we see the return of a large grid of the fabulous F5000’s. They will have there own events and should provide some exciting racing.

Ian Tate VHRR President

We also have 2 large grids of Grp N Touring cars, another crowd favourite, as well as a large entry of Grp S cars. I am certain we will see many fantastic events over the weekend. I wish you all a safe and enjoyable weekend of Historic Motor Racing. I also want to extend special thanks to all of the volunteer officials who have supported this meeting, including those from VHRR, MG Car

The Victorian Historic Racing Register sincerely thanks the sponsors & advertisers for their valuable support and commitment to the successful running of Historic Sandown. Without the support of these organisations the staging of this event would not be possible. The VHRR would like to thank V8RACE for their supply of course vehicles.

Q

uality rings true Without doubt, Bathurst is the most iconic Australian car race. This is where legends are born. This is the race that appears on most race fanatics “bucket list”. This is the pinnacle of Australian motoring racing.

The 2017 race didn’t disappoint. With challenging conditions, cars and drivers alike were tested to the limits. However, 2017 was very different. The winning team wasn’t one of the major factory backed teams. Erebus motorsport, privately owned by Betty Klemenko, writes itself into the record books by being the first female owned and managed team to win this iconic race. Driven by passion, Betty treats every member of her team like a family member. Erebus drivers - David Reynolds, and co driver Luke Youldon came together for that race and focused on one thing; The Win. Erebus sponsor since 2015, Penrite Oil, is the big surprise found “at the pointy end’ of Australia’s “Great Race”. An Australian owned and family run business, very much like Erebus, Penrite is punching well above its weight and showing why its earned its position as Australia’s No. 1 Premium Performance oil brand. Every product used by the Erebus Team, from the engine to the radiator, to the brakes to the steering mechanism, is a standard product line, available from your favourite automotive retail store. Penrite users are used to this type of quality, which is why Penrite is the preferred brand of more consumers than any other oil brand sold.

Erebus exclusively use: • • • • • •

Engine Oil Transaxle Coolant Brake Fluid Hydraulics Power Steering

Erebus also use P26, Moly Grease, High Temp Bearing Grease, Brake & Parts Cleaner, Solvent Degreaser plus other sundry Penrite products. Toby Dymond, General Manager Sales & Marketing says, “Winning such a challenging race proves the quality of the Penrite product. We are so proud of this achievement and delighted Penrite is etched in the history books as winner of Bathurst, 2017” To find the right product for your everyday, high performance or competition drive, download the SPEC FINDER and NETLUBE apps from iTunes or google play store today.

Erebus Team Manager Barry Ryan, worked extensively with Penrite’s Technical Manager, Brendan Hughes, to select the correct product to provide superior performance, under extreme conditions. Barry says “Erebus have been using Penrite’s racing range across all of our cars since our initial Bathurst partnering in 2015. We are currently running Penrite 10 tenths Racing 5 (5w-30) in our supercars . We believe the combination of quality Australian owned and made products for Australian conditions and Penrite’s constant developments is a crucial piece to the teams great success”

A

true gentleman … Brian ‘Brique’ Reed.

The young Brian Reed was hooked on cars after seeing Stan Jones’ Maybach for the first time on a school excursion, and so began a love affair with cars and racing. In late 1963 his beloved Elfin Clubman was bought, and his motor sport career began in January 1964 at Calder; the same year he had his first drive at Bathurst, and an invitation to join Lex Davison’s Ecurie Australie.

brique reed

Brique’s exposure to Bathurst made him a regular there and he drove in some twelve Bathurst events from 1964 through 1980. He was also a works driver for AMI (1965-1969) and Mazda (1973-1974). His involvement in the 1960’s was not constrained to Bathurst. He was also part of the team that set the Ford Falcon XP on the map with its 40 endurance records during the 70,000 mile Ford Falcon-Mobil Durability Run at the You Yangs in 1965.

In 1966 Brique drove the race of his life against many international drivers, whilst sharing a Porsche 906 Prototype with Alan Hamilton in the Rothmans International 12Hour Sports Car Race at Surfers Paradise. They finished 4th. Throughout his career, Brique set a number of lap records at various race circuits: Winton, Hume Weir, Warwick Farm (Triumph Spitfire), Phillip Island (Torana XU1), Calder (ASP 340C), and Calder (Holden Gemini). He was no slouch at hillclimbs either, setting lap records at Ararat (ASP 340C), Mt Tarrengower (Farrell Datsun) and Mt Leura (Elfin Clubman). In the latter years, Brique’s involvement in historic events in his beloved Elfin Clubman and 1975 Lola T342 FFord were a familiar sight and he followed this up with drives at Loton Park (UK) in a 1937 Singer Le Mans, and a co-drive with Scotty Taylor at Spa (Belgium) in 2010 in the one hour Stirling Moss Trophy event in Scotty’s 1955 Bobtail Cooper.

Of course, Brique was not only an historic competitor, expert motorsport broadcaster, founder and President of the Elfin Owners and Drivers’ Club, writer and commentator; he was very often the familiar face at motorsport events around the country. His ready smile, wealth of knowledge, unmistakable white hair and engaging manner will be sadly missed. In every way …. a true gentleman.

MG TC

Originally built in 1970’s, I am the 3rd owner as a race car having purchased the TC in 2005. The TC has been developed considerably by me and is reliable, competitive and a lot of fun. A brand new engine and supercharger overhaul were completed in August 2016 and then I competed at Wakefield Park in September 2016 and due to time constraints, have not used the TC since - unfortunately too many other things happening preventing me from racing. The TC runs a MK1 Cortina diff and quaif locker with 5 ratios available, Needham close ratio gearbox, Datsun 240Z brake drums, 2 SU on a Marshall 100 supercharger. There are 5 blocks, a complete gearbox with bell housing and many other spares available. The MG is race ready. Asking $45,000. Please contact Terry White on 0408 378 683

The Penske PC-16 We are hoping to see this car on display behind the pits this weekend following an immaculate ground up restoration by Alan Hamilton Rick Ravon Mears (born December 3, 1951 in Wichita, Kansas), also known by the nickname “Rocket Rick,” is a retired American race car driver. He is one of three men to win the Indianapolis 500 four times (1979, 1984, 1988, 1991), and is the current recordholder for pole positions in the race with six (1979, 1982, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991). Mears is also a three-time Indycar series/ World Series champion (1979, 1981 and 1982). Rick Mears in a Penske PC-16 chassis during the first week of practice for the 1987 Indianapolis 500. The Penske PC-16 was a CART Penske Racing car which was constructed for competition in the 1987 season. The chassis debuted with poor results at the season opening races, and struggled mightily to get up to speed at Indianapolis. Midway through the first week of practice, the Penske team parked the PC-16 in favor of their backup cars, a contingent of March 86C chassis.

Mears was raised in Bakersfield, California, and began his racing career in off-road racing. He switched to Indy Car racing in the late 1970s, making his debut for the small Art Sugai team, driving an Eagle-Offenhauser. His speed attracted the attention of Roger Penske. Although at the time Penske Racing had the services of Mario Andretti and Tom Sneva. Andretti was also racing in Formula One with Lotus at the time but Penske wanted another young driver who would focus exclusively on American racing. For 1978, Mears was offered a part-time ride in nine of the 18 championship races, filling in when Andretti was overseas. The arrangement also included a ride at the Indianapolis 500.

an Diemen International, Ltd. was a British race car manufacturer based in Snetterton, Norfolk, United Kingdom. The company had a reputation for high-volume production runs of its cars, the most well-known of which is its series of Formula Ford chassis, which have been at the forefront of that class of motorsport for over 20 years and led it to becoming the largest manufacturer of bespoke racing cars in the world. As well as Formula Ford, Van Diemen built cars for Formula Ford 2000, Sports 2000 and Star Mazda series. The company’s purpose-built manufacturing facility was located on the grounds of Snetterton Motor Racing Circuit, allowing racing teams to test the cars right off the production line. Van Diemen was founded in 1973 by Ross Ambrose and Ralph Firman Sr., whose children Marcos Ambrose, Ralph Firman Jr. and Natasha Firman have since gone on to have successful racing careers. The company’s name comes from the island of Tasmania, Australia, which was formerly known as Van Diemen’s

40

Land and is where Ambrose was born and lived before moving to the UK to co-found the company. The first car produced was the Van Diemen FA73. In 1973 Derek Lawrence won the BRDC Formula Ford 1600 championship in a FA73. The BRSCC Formula Ford was also won by a FA73. This car was driven by Donald MacLeod. South African Kenny Gray won the Scottish Formula Ford Championship in 1974 in a Van Diemen RF74. Chico Serra won the BRSCC championship in 1977 driving a Van Diemen. Serra went on to win the Formula Ford Festival that season, beating two Royale’s. The British car maker took over Group Racing Developments, a producer of Formula 3 chassis, at the end of 1975. A Van Diemen VG376 was entered in the British Formula 3 in 1976 and 1977. The car was a GRD 375 with updated aerodynamics. Jac Nellemann scored the best result for the car at Circuit Zolder scoring a fourth-place finish. The car manufacturer would return to Formula 3 in 1992. 1977 marked the start of a long time relationship with Duckhams Oil which sponsored the factory team until 2002. Wikipedia

don kinsey am

Don Kinsey AM. Recently the VHRR lost one of it’s most loved and respected members. Don passed away peacefully following a short illness. Don was probably the highest profile member the VHRR had ever had, MC’ing at every event the club ran for maybe 20 years. He will be remembered for his commentary in particular at Phillip Island and his ‘live’ interviews at that event. He was instrumental in assisting our junior members at workshops where his skill in communication was imparted with a passion. Very recently he was instrumental in achieving some major sponsorship for the Phillip Island event from Bursons/Autobarn. Don was the epitome of a communicator: his charm, wit and warmth were unequalled anywhere. Everyone felt at ease in his presence. His personal presentation always immaculate. Of course Don was much more than just the VHRR. His presence at the Australian Grand Prix in the commentary box and in the paddock was a huge asset to that event. He commentated at Rob Roy, Historic Winton and many other vintage events. His work for charities was the stuff of Legend - advisor for 30 years and later Patron of the Uncle Bob’s Club, Foundation Director of the Mazda Foundation, The Good Friday Appeal and so on. Don presented training lectures to the volunteer guides at the Shrine of Remembrance and acted as master of ceremonies at various ceremonies associated with the Shrine. Don had been involved with Royal South Street Society for many years and he chaired the finals of the Herald/Sun Aria competition on a number of occasions. He will be sorely missed by every one of us. And wasn’t it nice to see him, all smiles, at the September VHRR AGM. RIP Don

orvette Stingray 1971 cars were virtually identical in appearance to the previous model inside and out. This was the final year for the fiber optics light monitoring system, the headlight washer system, and the M22 heavy duty 4-speed manual gearbox. For the first time, air conditioning was installed on most of the cars, with nearly 53 percent so ordered. Engines were detuned with reduced compression ratios to tolerate lower octane fuel. The small blocks available were the 350 cu in (5.7 L) base engine, which dropped to 270 hp (201 kW), and the high performance LT1, now listed at 330 hp (246 kW). The LS5 454 cu in (7.4 L) motor

58

was carried over and produced 365 hp (272 kW). Offered in ‘71 only was the LS6 454 cu in (7.4 L) big-block featuring aluminum heads and delivering 425 hp (317 kW), highest of the 1970-72 series, and could be ordered with an automatic transmission. The ZR1 option was carried over for LT-1 equipped cars and the ZR2 option, offered this year only, provided a similar performance equipment package for LS6 cars, and restricted transmission to a 4-speed manual. Rare options: ZR1 special engine package, ZR2 special engine package , LS6 425-hp engine, shoulder belts in convertibles. Wikipedia

T

he MG F and MG TF are mid-engined, rear wheel drive roadster cars that were sold under the MG marque by three manufacturers between 1995 and 2011.

The MG F was the first new model designed as an MG since the MGB that was produced from 1962 to 1980, the marque spent the 1980s being used to denote performance models from then parent Austin Rover Group, and was briefly seen on the MG RV8, a limited edition re-launch of the MG MGB which was sold between 1993 and 1995. The MG F was initially designed by Rover Group during the period it was owned by British Aerospace and was brought to market after the business had been sold to the German car manufacturer BMW.

The BMW owned Rover Group manufactured the model from 1995 to 2000. BMW broke up Rover Group in 2000, divesting the Rover and MG passenger car businesses to a management buy-out who formed the independent MG Rover business. MG Rover manufactured the MG F from 2000 onwards, heavily updating it to become the MG TF in 2002. MG Rover entered administration in 2005, resulting in the production of the MG TF model ceasing. The remains of the MG Rover business were sold to Nanjing Automobile and the MG TF resumed production under the Nanjing owned MG Motor in 2007. The model, by then heavily outdated, was not a sales success and production ceased for a second and final time in 2011.

expanded into engine development, creating a fuel injection system for their Chevrolet V8s.[6] Another addition to the team was a new tire supplier, with Goodyear replacing Firestone in exchange for a testing and development program.[6] The first M6A was completed in spring 1967, and brought to the nearby Goodwood Circuit for testing. Bruce McLaren Motor Racing carried out over 2000 miles of testing at the circuit in preparation for the upcoming Can-Am season, tuning the car as well as gathering data for Goodyear’s use. As two further M6As were completed, the team shipped the cars to North America to prepare for the opening race of the season. A final addition to the cars was a coat of orange paint. This new McLaren Orange color scheme would eventually become synonymous with Bruce McLaren and the team.

ruce McLaren gathered several designers to develop the M6A during the off-season in early 1967. Along with McLaren himself, Robin Herd, Gordon Coppuck, Tyler Alexander, and Don Beresford all worked on the layout of the M6A’s chassis and bodywork. The car featured the first monocoque chassis constructed by McLaren, while the bodywork was specifically shaped to increase downforce suited for the Can-Am circuits. McLaren’s team also

After the retirement of the M6As, McLaren entrusted Trojan with constructing duplicates which could be sold to customers. These M6Bs were nearly identical to the M6As but were sold without an engine. Several other M6Bs were also modified to fit closed-cockpit bodywork. Wikipedia
