Bruce Astbury First became interested in motorsport watching my Dad compete in OST events with the Austin 7 Club. Competed in Autocross and Sprints from the age of 17. Currently President of the MSCA and heavily involved in running track days. In partnership with my wife Petrina, we developed the MSCA Come and Try program which is on again this year at Phillip Island on December 3rd. Currently race a MGTF LE500 which I purchased in 2019, as I’m unable to race my Lotus Elise in MG and Invited British. They think its too fast!. My MG is decked out in Jayco livery as I’m a proud employee of Australia’s largest RV manufacturer. We enjoy using our motorhome at race meetings.

Peter Fowler/Bryan Thompson Mercedes 450 SLC Sports Sedan One of the iconic Sports Sedans here this weekend is the Peter Fowler designed and built Mercedes 450 SLC driven by Peter Fowler, John Bowe, and Brad Jones. In 1980 following many years in motor sport, building, and preparing cars for Bryan Thomson, but also for other drivers and teams, a 33 year old Peter Fowler decided that it was time to design and build a Sports Sedan of his own. PF Racing Developments, in conjunction with local businesses and interested parties formed the Shepparton on the Move Project to finance the project and the car ran the in the Advance Australia colours in its first season. The concept by Peter was to have a car that would stand out from the crowd and hopefully assist with further funding of the project. As with all motor sport, funding is the key, so he chose a Mercedes 450SLC body. The engine chosen was the Thomson/Fowler Quad valve 6 litre V8 Chevrolet V8 that was designed and built to run in the Bryan Thomson Volkswagen Fastback Sports Sedan in 1975.

The car was designed and built in 1980 and ready for the 1981 season with a young John Bowe named as the main driver. The design broke new ground in several ways for Sports Sedans: •

Mid mounted Quad valve Chevrolet 6 litre V8, back of block at wheelbase centre line. (mid-mounted)

•

Five speed Hewland Transaxle, with the clutch, flywheel, starter, and alternator at the rear of the car for perfect weight distribution.

•

After lots of discussions with CAMS and inspections by Harry Firth, (Holden Dealer Team Fame) the car was the first full tube chassis Sports Sedan.

The first race meeting was Sandown in February, followed by a further seven meetings over the year at mainly Victorian race circuits. It was a development year for the car and generally competitive with finishes inside the top four at all circuits. Later in the year Bryan Thomson assisted with test driving and development, although not competing. A young Brad Jones also drove the car later in the year when John Bowe had other commitments to Formula 5000 and Formula 2....Cont on page 48

HISTORIC RACING’S ALIVE AND WELL IN QUEENSLAND Looking forward to a warm break next Winter? Have you raced at the fabulous Morgan Park yet? What about the new Queensland Raceway? It’s early days, but HRCC is moving ahead with plans to offer more events for 2023. With new developments at Queensland Raceway and Morgan Park’s continued improvements, HRCC is planning to include both in our 2023 schedule. Our traditional Come and Try, Train and Test Saturday followed by Supersprint Sunday in February will be followed by our AUTUMN HISTORIC WARWICK, which has grown to be another premier event, frequently favoured by the Heritage Touring Cars group.

Our signature HISTORIC QUEENSLAND meeting will be in July and probably at QR, where recent and ongoing developments on and off track will transform the competitor experience. We’re working on a carnival atmosphere and plenty of spectators to make your trip worthwhile. Due to Covid delays, we ended up running a oneoff event in October last year, and it went so well we plan to do it again. Expect to see another great event at Morgan Park in October 2023. HRCC offers Racing for all Historic Groups, as well as Regularity Trials, and SuperSprints especially for Sports Sedans. Take a couple of weeks off and include a great race meeting in your Queensland holiday!

I have had the car for nearly thirty years, firstly as a road car that was still registered and used as a daily driver for the first five years,over the journey it has evolved into what it is now, used in six hour events, sprints and circuit racing in the Alfa racing category.

Gary & Narelle Beacham have been competing in Regularity & Supersprint events in their 1977 Datsun 260Z since 2004. Competition highlights include Mt. Panorama with FOSC 2008, 2009 & 2010, PIs. Classic 2020, 21 & 22, SMSP & Morgan Pk. The Datsun has been gradually improved over the years. Mallala Historics April 2022 Round One The John McCormack Historic Sports Sedans Series 2022 first round was at Mallala Raceway. with great weather all weekend. 22 cars entered (1 car could not start, pre event mechanical failure) with only 21 cars completing the weekend 20 finished (1 car steering rack broke in pit paddock), no carnage. Simon Pfitzner in the Ex Thompson/Fowler Chev Merc was the fastest all weekend, taking out round 1 of the John McCormack Historic Sports Sedan Series.

Ran mainly at AIR (SA) with the odd trip to Hume Weir, the car was sold early in the 80s to make way for the next project, a Datsun Stanza 2 door S/Sedan. The A30 was found some 8 or so years back as a bit of a barn find, thought to have been cut up and lost, a surprise find late one night on a chat forum, it was brought and restored with the help of Barry Bray back to its former glory. As you see it today, it is the same car from the 70 s, original body, wheels, roll cage, seats, dash, grill, fuel tank and diff housing. Its all there! :-)

I have owned for about 12 years and it was fully restored about 10 years ago. I have tried to keep it as close as possible to John’s original car 73 car but also taken advantage of some later technology.

David Ramsay My car is a 1972 XA Hardtop that has been restored as a race replica of the 1973 John Goss/ Kevin Bartlett car they raced at Bathurst. In the 1973 Bathurst 1000 John Goss put his car on pole and lead for about 2/3rds of the race until he got caught up with a couple of back markers having an accident, John had to eventually retire due to damage sustained in that accident.

My car runs a Cleveland 393 ci stroker, 5 speed Tremac, full floater rear. HP is around 490hp which would be a little more than John had in 73. John Goss provided great information on his original car which assisted greatly in the build, both John and Kevin have seen the car with Kevin doing some hot laps around the DECA circuit. I compete in all the VIC Historic events running in Regularity/super sprints more recently with the 5 Litre touring cars. speed sequential gearbox, and a Watts link full floating rear end. Supercar brake 6 spot & 4 spot callipers, & DMS custom suspension. I run 18 x 11 wheels. I’m hoping Jim Richards attends, so I can get him to sign the car.

In 1982 Brad Jones took over as the regular driver. Development continued on the Quad valve V8 engine which was used throughout 1982 but it soon became apparent that it lacked the horsepower required to run at the front. Nine race meetings were run over the year but by late 1982 the project had stalled again due to a lack of finances. Peter Fowler decided that it was the end of his race car ownership days.

In 1983 to ensure the car and project had a future, Bryan Thomson decided to buy out the project and came out of driver retirement to do this. The Quad valve V8 was retired, and a new development project started on a turbocharged Chevrolet V8 as the future power unit. Bryan Thompson took on the costs and Peter Fowler continued with the development and running of the team and as a bonus became a paid team manager. 1983 was a development year, the turbo project was a challenge and a foray into unknown territory. The car was repainted Monza Red and the DG 300 Hewland gearbox was replaced with a stronger LG 600 gearbox. The car only ran 4/5 meetings and test days around midyear. On top of all these happenings, the rules changed, Sports and GT cars were to run as one in the GT class. This opened up the opportunity for a new body style, so the Benz GT was created.

The Garret turbo chargers of the day proved fragile and gave many despairing times. Indy turbos were sourced from the US with larger shafts and LH thread on the compressor end and this improved engine reliability. The GT Championship was the aim in 1985, it was decided to run two cars, The Bob Jane Monza was purchased, rebuilt, painted Monza Red with a young Brad Jones to be the driver.

1985 was the serious GT Championship challenge year with the Championship starting at the end of March and finishing at the end of August. Nine meetings in 5 months with two top line cars. Big stuff in the day and expensive. Bryan Thomson and wife Loel went to live in the UK midway through the year which meant that Bryan flew back from the UK for some of the meetings. At the end of August, we had won the Australian GT Championship. Bryan and all involved were pleased with the effort. Bryan Thompson retired from active motor sport in 1976 to concentrate on his business expansions.
