On behalf of the Committee and Members of the Victorian Historic Racing Register I would like to welcome our guests and competitors to the seventh Winton Festival of Speed. I would especially like to thank John Blanchard for his role as Patron of the Meeting. John is a huge help to the VHRR in all ways, and if you come across him in the pits don’t hesitate to say hello. I would like to thank our hard working committee, especially Peter Donald who has put an enormous effort into the success of this event. We have a ripper entry this year, thanks to the enthusiasm of all those competitors who have been supporting this event since it’s inception seven years ago. We thank our major sponsors, Shannons, Penrite and Cooldrive and of course the many other sponsors and advertisers without whom none of these events would be possible. Have a good weekend. Patron

of the

Meeting

John Blanchard The Victorian Historic Racing Register is proud to have John Blanchard Snr. as Patron of this weekend’s Winton Festival of Speed. John is a major contributor to the VHRR and assists in all ways, in particular with the provision of the VHRR Clubrooms in Box Hill. John was instrumental in the building of a special annex within the clubrooms to house Sir Jack Brabham’s World Championship winning Repco Brabham BT19. The car holds pride of place within the clubrooms, along with many of Sir Jack’s trophies and memorabilia. However, while all that is John’s current interest and we all know Tim, John’s grandson, is heavily involved in V8 Supercars, John himself had a long career in motorsport, competing in Rallies, Hillclimbs & Circuit racing. John junior also has a motor sporting background. The Blanchard family has been in the motor industry since 1918 for three generations, John W Blanchard, W John Blanchard (John Snr) and John W Blanchard. Son of John, Tim, competes in V8 Supercars, after a successful career in Formula Ford. CoolDrive Distribution was created by Mr W John Blanchard and Mrs Shirley Blanchard. As founders, they have dedicated over 35 years to the Company and presided over its growth and development in a manner that ensures CoolDrive holds true to its founding principles. Purchased on Grays Online auction’ site in February 2013. The car ran in the 1981 British Formula Ford Championships and other races in the UK and was exported to the USA at the end of 1981, to a bloke in Texas. It was raced in Texas and other parts of the USA by three owners in total, until it was imported into Australia by a bloke in Brisbane, who obtained the C of D. I carried out

a fairly major refurbishment on the car and it first ran in my hands at Phillip Island in 2014. It took a few meetings to make it handle acceptably and now it is very pleasant to drive and all round good fun. With a better driver the car would be a lot quicker. Remember, racing is life, all that happens before or after is just waiting. Wayne Groeger

2016 sees Isuzu Motors celebrate it’s 100th anniversary, making it Japan’s oldest vehicle manufacturer. Isuzu’s history started in 1916 when Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding & Engineering Company and Tokyo Gas and Electric Industrial Company joined for vehicle development and built it’s first car under licence with Wolseley Motors, United Kingdom, in 1918.

Many other countries also imported Bellett’s with 170,737 being built in both left and right hand drive by the end of production in 1973. New Zealand and Canada also did local assembly of Bellett’s for some time, and while plans of doing the same in Australia were touted they never eventuated. Isuzu also built other variants of the Bellett that never made it to Australia including a 2 door sedan, a station wagon, a panel van, and most well-known is the “GT-R” 1600 twin cam powered race homologation version of the GT. The bigger cousin of the Bellett was the Isuzu Florian, and while

By 1922, the Wolseley A9 was being locally produced, becoming the first passenger car built in Japan. The name Isuzu first appeared in 1934, being used on a government standard model truck. The name “Isuzu” came from the Isuzu River which is located near the factory where these models were built. In 1937, Automobile Industries merged with Tokyo Gas and Electric to form Tokyo Automobile Industries, and in 1949 the company changed name to the current day Isuzu Motors Limited. 1963 saw the ground breaking Bellett model released to wide acclaim. The name “Bellett” came from another Isuzu built car, the larger Bellel, and Bellett was thought to mean “Bellel’s little sister”. The first Bellett 4 door sedans were imported to Australia in August 1964. The Wasp utility followed in November 1965, and the Bellett 1600GT coupe in April 1966. In the years between 1964 and 1970, 16,000 sedan’s, 290 GT’s and 122 Wasp’s were imported.

the 2 cars shared most of their running gear, that’s where the similarities ended. In Japan, the Bellett became more of a sporting car in Isuzu’s marketing while the Florian was aimed at the family car market, even being advertised as the car for gentle people…. Later, Isuzu used the entire floorpan and running gear of the Florian with a new body to produce a sports / touring car called the 117. .......Continued page 26

Australia received the Florian in small numbers over 2 years only, but the 117 was never officially sold here even though a few were imported for evaluation. In 1972, General Motors purchased 34% of Isuzu, forming a merger that would last until 2002 when Isuzu itself began a buyback of shares. As a result, the Isuzu brand name disappeared from Australian badged cars until Isuzu re-launched here with it’s D-Max model. During these years though, Isuzu did indeed play a significant part in the local motoring scene under GM’s Australian company – Holden. Isuzu released the Gemini in 1974 and it was GM’s first worldwide built car, with the name being viewed as the “Bellett’s twin”. The very first Japanese built cars were even badged Bellett-Gemini.

Australia again didn’t receive all Gemini models that were available, with some markets even seeing a utility version, but most notable were the ZZ/R and ZZ/T versions in both 4 door sedan and 2 door coupe styles that were fitted with the EFI 1800 twin cam engine. Holden did release a local ZZ/Z version, but this was a styling exercise without the Japanese twin cam rrunning gear. Holden badged Isuzu’s H didn’t stop at just the Gemini d tthough…. We also saw the Holden Rodeo, otherwise known H as the Isuzu P’up (Pick Up), a tthe Holden Jackaroo, known also as the Isuzu Trooper, a tthe Holden Piazza, known as an Isuzu by the same name, a tthe Holden Frontera, known as the Isuzu MU (Mysterious a Utility…. Yes, that is correct), U and some say unfortunately, a tthe Holden Camira, known as tthe Isuzu Aska…. Although tthe Aska did greatly improve iin the following years after it

Holden badged T series Gemini’s were assembled at Holden’s Acacia Ridge plant in Brisbane, while the later RB Gemini was built at the Elizabeth plant in Adelaide. In the years between February 1975 when the TX Gemini was launched and 1987 when production of the RB Gemini ended, 242,582 cars had been built in Australia alone. These included the 4 door sedan, 2 door coupe, station wagon and panel van variants, with the TE Gemini being the most popular selling 70,567 cars in just 2.5 years. For many years, the Gemini was easily Australia’s most popular small car, which it still remains a highly popular car today, and it was also awarded Wheels magazine “Car of the Year” in 1975. Other markets around the world also received the Gemini, and among other names, it was badged as a Vauxhall Chevette in the UK, an Opel Kadett in Europe, and confusingly a Buick Opel by Isuzu in America which was part of a staggering 2,793,353 cars sold there across various American GM brand names as well.

Page 26

was removed from the Australian market. The Chevrolet LUV (Light Utility Vehicle) was also sold in Australia, as well as some early versions of it’s Isuzu KB20 and 40 equivalents. Today in Australia, Isuzu has sold over 70,000 D-Max commercial based models since launching in 2008, and have added the MU-X passenger / SUV model in recent years as well. As opposed to Isuzu’s car history in Australia, Isuzu trucks have been on sale in Australia since 1959 are widely known and regarded today as the best trucks in the country.

This is shown in the fact the Isuzu trucks have been the highest selling brand in Australia for over 27 years, and this is a trend that looks to continue well into the future as well. This weekend, Isuzu’s Australian car history is represented by various models of both imported and locally built cars including Bellett’s, Gemini’s, Florian’s and 117’s. Some of these cars have significant local history including Bathurst racing campaigns, Isuzu promotional use, company evaluation cars, rare factory colours and specifications, and well known former and current owners. As 2016 marks 100 years of Isuzu Motors, we are proud to acknowledge this achievement this weekend at the Winton Festival of Speed.

Air Canada Flight 143, a Boeing 767-233 wide body jetliner, ran out of fuel at an altitude of 12,500 metres, about halfway through its Montreal to Edmonton flight. The crew was able to glide the aircraft safely to an emergency landing on the race track that was

previously RCAF Station Gimli, a Royal Canadian Air Force base. The person, who fuelled the aircraft in Montreal, mixed up the conversion between Kilograms to Pounds of fuel. Fuel is measured in Kilograms for the European manufactured Airbus, but the American made Boeing measured in Pounds. As the plane was gliding, with no engines running, it approached the track silently, so it was certainly a surprise when the plane landed during the Formula Ford race. Grahame Burton

he Nova was purchased in 2012 shortly after arriving from the USA as a road car/ Pro Street car. As the second generation Nova had been added to the list of cars eligible for Historic Touring cars it was decided to turn the car into a NC Historic Touring car. After much “toing and froing” between myself and CAMS regarding maters of eligibility the Submission was accepted and the build process began. The build time was about 18 months and the car finally hit the track for the June 2015 Sydney Motorsport Park Retro Speed Fest. I have been a fan of the Nova since the days of Norm Beechey and am surprised that there are not more in the category. Ross Muller

I

1750 1310 1860 1798 2500

’ve been passionate about cars since I was a little kid - my first driving experience was at 3 in the family EH Holden. I had managed to start the car, put it into gear and was attempting to release the handbrake when the vigilant neighbour hurdled the fence and prevented me from driving into the kitchen! After attending a few track days in the UK in my 20’s and 30’s and some Regularity events back in Oz in the late noughties, I began my racing adventure in 2010 in a 1963 MGB. Porsches have always been my passion so it didn’t take long before I bought the 911 and have progressively turned it into a competitive car. More fun to come!! Many thanks for help and support of all the volunteers involved in our motorsport! Richard Watts

elieved to be the oldest of all the Stags being Chassis # 2 as Chassis #1 is unknown. It began its racing in early 1972 and has raced every year since with quite a few hundred races under its belt. Early racing history started in South Australia and a log book showing support races to The AGP etc. A great little car that is rarely off the podium with recent success at the current Tasman Events, Phillip Island Classic, Sydney Retro Speed Festival, Wakefield Park and Winton some 4 years ago when we were there last. Holding lap records in class and get quicker most times its out. Its a real pleasure to drive. Tony Paynter

his Gemini has competed in the ATCC since 1975 through to 1984. In the early years it ran a 1600 4 speed and competed at Bathurst in ‘78 and ‘79. It had a dnf in ‘78 and finished 2nd in class in ‘79 and 22nd outright in the hands of Bernie McClure. In 1982 the car was upgraded to PF60 specs, (late model

front and a 1800 engine with 5 speed) (Japanese import specs) and modified to take flares with the new Group C rules. The new owner, Les Szrgniawski, ran the car up to 1984 including the 1984 Sandown Endurance. Steve Axisa

inton will be my fourth meeting in my 1975 Rennmax MK2 Formula Vee and I am very much looking forward to it as I have never been there before. I feel I am coming to grips with the Vee and hope to be in the action at this meeting. The car was first owned and raced by Chris Lewis and was restored to historic specification in 2009 by Phil Lewis (no relation) and raced by him. I am throughly enjoying racing in historic Formula Vee . Ian Bloodworth

ust purchased an ex Queensland Datsun 280Z (after ten years of Alfa race car ownership) and sorting out the driver (me) and after few minor changes to the car. Currently the car is at the panel beaters after the Retro Speed Fest at Sydney Motor Sport Park. I have always found Winton challenging and expect the Datsun even more so. Steve Smith
