I have been a member of Winton since the late sixty’s, I have raced many different cars over the years, Speedway (Vic champ), Sports Sedans (Vic champ x 2, Champ Winton 3 times Touring Cars. For the last 12 years I have been competing in historic touring cars. I competed in the first 50k race at the Festival of Speed, getting fastest lap, winning the top ten shoot out, then winning the race (great weekend) so I’m looking forward to giving it a red hot go at this meeting. A strange but true tragic story involving a Formula Ford. In April 2008, after a wet historic race meeting at Eastern Creek – as it was called then – it was too late and wet to unload the trailer, so the tow car, trailer and race car was left out the front. What could go wrong? The next morning, only the tow car was left, along with cut chains and locks. A flatbed truck was used to steal the trailer and race car. At that time in Sydney, particularly South Western Sydney, there were two waring crime families, and

drive by shootings were common. The NSW police Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad were kept busy. At the same time, several M72 rocket propelled grenade launchers were stolen from the Australian Army. Apparently, one of the crime families thought they could get an advantage over the other by bolting one of these launchers on the Formula Ford. It would certainly cause some damage, as it can disable a tank. That would certainly escalate matters. Some criminals are not clever. Continued page 28

Remember when a really Hot Car had 6 inch wideys, Twin Carbies, 2” Exhaust and a Full Race Camshaft.... It was Fun to Drive your Car! The Head Stud Development Co. has been preparing cylinder heads for high performance engines since the early 1980’s. Our involvement in motorsport began with development of cylinder heads for Perkins Motorsport and HDT. From the early 308 carburetor V8 engines through to the fuel injected power plant up to and including the alloy headed Chev engines. Today, with that background, we are able to adapt our knowledge and experience to a wide range of cylinder head options. We offer a wide range of services which include: • Manufacturing of custom made engine valves • Pre-fabricated intake manifolds • General engineering • Complete engine re-builds for both performance and standard applications • Cylinder head reconditioning • Modification, flow bench testing, development and preparation of cylinder heads for any application We are able to tailor a cylinder head and/or engine package to suit your requirement and your budget. The Head Stud Development Co, ‘HSD’, looks forward to being able to assist with your project.

From page 26....Several 26....Several weeks later, a member of the crime family decided to take the car for a drive around Greenacre – a suburb of Sydney – at 3 pm on a week day. Not surprisingly, it stood out and police were alerted. The Police Air Wing were called in and surveillance was undertaken on the well defended compound where the race car was stored. It was seen in the back yard. The Police considered that they did not have enough hardware to raid the property and were dealing with the Army to improve their capability. It would appear that the crime family got wind of an impending raid, and the car and trailer were dumped about 20km away in Smithfield. The car

was recovered, with worn out tyres, clutch and the extinguisher exhausted. Several months later, the leader of the crime family took his family to a sandwich shop and was fatally shot 29 times. The Sydney Telegraph reported at the time “… Mr Darwiche was known to the police and there had been “interaction” with him in the past. Several lines of inquiry were being pursued, including people who might have had a grudge against Mr Darwiche.” The car has been repaired and is running this weekend. Choosing the right oil is easier than ever. When oil shopping, it is daunting to walk into an Auto Outlet and see a wall of different types of engine oils, especially if you are unsure about, which is the right product for your vehicle. Making the wrong choice could lead to a host of problems from increased fuel consumption to engine and ancillary parts failure. Penrite invest heavily in technical expertise to find you the right product to match the specification requirements for your vehicle. We know how important this is for the vehicle to perform at its best, last the distance and even maintain vehicle warranty where this is required. So how do you find the right product for your vehicle? Here are a few ways ~ 1. The Penrite Product Guide on the Penrite Oil Web Site Using this guide you can select directly from the list by using quick search or by drilling down to your model of car. You can even click on one of our pre-selector TABS for Motorcycles, VV&C, Marine, Workshop or NZ guide. When you have selected your car type, brand and model, our Recommendation Guide will show you all of the right fluids for your vehicle. 2. Our Smart Phone Apps Penrite Smart Phone Apps are available on line and free to download to your Apple iOS or Android device. Once loaded, your App will always be up to date and ready to use. The Smartphone App has the same information that is on the web based guide and you can take it with you wherever you take your smart phone. It supplies you with the correct product, an image of the retail pack and the service capacity needed to complete the task. 3. Instore Touch Screens Penrite provide electronic in store touch screens in most automotive retail and distributor outlets that are simple to use and find the correct product for your application. Penrite pioneered the use of these devices in store to replace bulky and quickly out of date paper guides. The instore touch screens quickly provide you with the correct specification and preferred products to suit your vehicle. Further details on these products are available on their respective product information sheets found on the Penrite web site:www.penriteoil.com.au Penrite recommend “The Right Oil for the Right Application

Trevor Simpson’s Repco Brabham BT23-B-2 The car was originally purchased by Charles Vogele, a Swiss businessman and left the factory in 1967. It first ran in Hockenheim on 25 March 1967 and went on to race on most of the well known circuits in Europe including Monza in 1968. The car was then stored for many years and in 1996 was bought by Englishman Phillip Walker who raced it in the UK. In 2009 Trevor Simpson bought it and restored at his workshop in Sydney. It was campaigned by John Bowe for a number

of years who was very successful particularly in Winton on the long circuit. Some two years ago the car was rebuilt and is now driven by Richard Carter. In 2016 Richard won the Tasman Trophy Race and the Leo Geoghegan Trophy Race for Group “O” cars. There were only three BT23-Bs made and, to our knowledge, it is the only one left. The car is powered by a 2.5 litre Coventry Climax. See pic Page 43

I converted to a Datsun 280Z from an Alfetta GTV (both Group S cars) in April 2016 after being taught that six cylinders have a major advantage over four by Hung Do at PI. The Datsun is the ex Jason Lea car. It is proving a lot of fun and reliable (hope that is not the moxy curse by saying so).

The brakes are proving problematic (fancy word for don’t always work), especially when trying to go down the outside of a Panterra. I am still chasing Porsches and have not figured out how to lose 100kg and still stop - maybe the driver needs a diet. Steve Smith
