Trans-Siberian Orchestra is celebrating the 20-year anniversary of their annual winter tour, based on the rockers’ 1999 Ghosts of Christmas Eve TV movie. The tour kicks off Nov. 14 in Green Bay and Council Bluffs and wraps up Dec. 30 in Milwaukee and Cleveland after stops in 65 cities across North America for more than 100 performances with a performance here in Houston on December 21st at Toyota Center. This year features a new stage design and incorporates presentation of the movie, which tells the story of a runaway girl who seeks shelter in a mysterious abandoned theater on Christmas Eve, soundtracked by TSO favorites including “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24,” “O’ Come All Ye Faithful” and “Good King Joy.” This year’s outing is TSO’s second tour without founder Paul O’Neil, who died in 2017. “It’s hard to believe that 20 years ago, we had just seven shows,” Al Pitrelli, TSO’s music director and lead guitarist, told USA TODAY. “We were so happy that 10 to 11 thousand people came out to those shows and fell in love with Paul’s creation. Last year, with Paul’s family steering the ship, we realized that his dream will live beyond him, and that makes us all very proud, happy and thankful.” To celebrate the tour’s big year, TSO and Rhino Entertainment also will release a new 20thanniversary edition of their 1998 album “The Christmas Attic,” available on CD and digitally Sept. 28, with a vinyl version out Nov. 23. The new edition of the album features “Christmas Jam (Live),” a bonus track previously unreleased on CD and vinyl, available to stream below. In terms of what this year’s show has in store for fans, Pitrelli says to “expect new production, new songs and a new take on what’s become a tradition for so many people nationwide.” “There are a lot of people who come back year after year, and they expect to see the stories they’ve grown so attached to, and, not to disappoint them, we keep the familiarity intact,” Pitrelli said. “But, those same people in the audience know that there are always going to be a lot of surprises. This year is no different. ... We as a band and production are forever pushing the envelope both musically and visually, (and) this tour is going to be epic.” When Paul O’Neill first conceived TransSiberian Orchestra, his goal was as straightforward as it was incredibly ambitious. “The whole idea,” the late Paul O’Neill explained, “was to create a progressive rock band that would push the boundaries (of the genre) further than any group before... Way, way further.” With more than 10 million albums sold, TSO has inspired generations of fans to rediscover the multi-dimensional art form of the rock opera. Meanwhile, on the road, they have become one of the world’s top acts, with Billboard magazine naming TSO as one of the top touring artists of the past decade — a $20 million-plus production that has played to over 100 million people in 80+ cities, selling more than $280 million worth of tickets and presenting $11 million to charity. O’Neill, a New York City native grew up, “with a wide-ranging world of (rock) musical influences.” But, O’Neill also soaked up sources such as Broadway musicals, Motown and singersongwriters such as Jim Croce and Harry Chapin, while authors such as Oscar Wilde and Robert Graves fueled his literary tastes. He began his career playing guitar for touring productions of Jesus Christ Superstar and Hair, then went to work in the late ’70s for Leber-Krebs Inc., the Manhattan management company whose clients included Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, AC/DC, Def Leppard, the Scorpions, the New York Dolls, and scores of others. In the ’80s, O’Neill became a
major concert promoter in Japan as well, but returned to the States to start writing and producing full-time. O’Neill helmed Aerosmith’s Classics Live I and Classics Live II albums before beginning a fortuitous relationship with the band Savatage that led to conceptual pieces such as Hall Of The Mountain King, Gutter Ballet, Streets: A Rock Opera and Dead Winter Dead. Producing introduced O’Neill to Jon Oliva, Bob Kinkel and Al Pitrelli, as well as reconnecting him with legendary studio engineer Dave Wittman, who all became key original collaborators in O’Neill’s grand vision - Trans-Siberian Orchestra. “I wanted to take the very best of all the forms of music I grew up on and merge them into a new style,” O’Neill says. “Basically I was building on the work of everybody I worshipped: the rock opera parts from bands like the Who; the marriage of classical and rock from bands like Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Queen; the over-the-top light show from bands like Pink Floyd... I always wanted to do a full rock opera with a full progressive band and at least 18 lead singers.” O’Neill took the idea to Atlantic Records which, to his surprise, went for it and financed the creation of Romanov, which was initially to be TSO’s first release. “We were very fortunate,” he says. “It was one of the only labels left that still did an ‘old school’ kind of artist development. My original concept was that we were going to do six rock operas, a trilogy about Christmas and maybe one or two regular albums.” However, when Romanov got temporarily put on the back burner, the first installment of the Christmas trilogy, Christmas Eve and Other Stories became TSO’s debut album. Fueled by the socially conscious single “Christmas Eve/ Sarajevo 12/24,” the album was certified double platinum. More platinum certifications followed with 1998’s The Christmas Attic, and the final installment of the Christmas trilogy, The Lost Christmas Eve in 2004. In the midst of completing the trilogy, TSO released their first non-holiday rock opera, the gold certified Beethoven’s Last Night. But TSO really cemented its following in concert. The group hit the road in 1999, beginning an annual November-December extravaganza that O’Neill takes pride in being, “as over the top as we can make it. We have, two stages —with pyro, light and lasers— on both sides of the arena, as well as in the crowd and the best sound we can find... There’s no second-class seats at a Trans-Siberian Orchestra show. I want people to walk out of our shows speechless and still not believing what they have seen was possible.” “I’ve always believed that music has the power to transport and transform,” O’Neill explained. “The original concept of Trans-Siberian Orchestra was how to make music have the most emotional impact. We always try to write melodies that are so infectious they don’t need lyrics and lyrics so poetic that they don’t need a melody, but when you combine the two together they create an alloy where the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. Once those songs are woven together into a tapestry they create a story which gives each song a third dimension.” “That was so much in the spirit of TransSiberian Orchestra,” O’Neill explains. “This is a group —a constantly morphing group— of extremely creative and talented individuals who are always trying to raise the bar of where a band can take its audience sonically, visually and emotionally. With that as our core ideal, the possibilities are endless.”

Faster Pussycat Perform at Warehouse Live Faster Pussycat are the undisputed Kings of Sleaze Rock from Hollywood, CA formed in 1986. Sleaze: immoral, sordid, and corrupt behavior or material. They will be appearing this month at Warehouse Live on December 20th with opening acts The Dirty Reckless, and Johnny Solinger. This will be an All Ages show. No band epitomizes Hollywood sleaze more than Faster Pussycat. Countless bands have adopted their look and demeanor in order to try and ride the Hollywood wave to success. Most fail. For those bands it’s a costume…an act. For Faster Pussycat it’s a way of life. They said it best in their own song “Sex, drugs & Rock-n-Roll” off their 2006 album “The Power and the Glory Hole”. However don’t be mistaken, they are much more than an image. First and foremost they are a rock n roll band that has put out consistently great records and given it all on stage, where it counts the most. Singer Taime Downe formed the band in 1986 during the Glam metal boom of the 1980s, the earliest incarnation of the band featured Downe and Greg Steele along with Brent Muscat. The band took its name from the cult classic Russ Meyer film Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! In 1987 they released their self-titled debut album which went gold, the same year Guns N’ Roses released Appetite for Destruction. Although Guns N’ Roses would overshadow Faster Pussycat in album sales, the band managed to build a cult following and put out several promotional videos from the first album for songs such as “Cathouse”, “Bathroom Wall” and “Don’t Change That Song”. In the United States the band toured with Alice Cooper, David Lee Roth, and Motörhead in support of the album. The album was loaded with sexual innuendo and bravado and struck a nerve in the glam rock community, though they were always a little more
down and dirty than glam. During that time they were interviewed and played two songs (Cathouse and Bathroom Wall) in the documentary film “The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years. The documentary captured the general vibe of the Sunset Strip bands during that time period, with Faster Pussycat being featured front and center. In 1989 they released the album “Wake me when it’s over”, which spawned the massive top 25 hit single “House of Pain” propelling them beyond the sunset strip to worldwide acclaim. They received substantial airtime on MTV for the video and toured with some of the biggest bands in history: Guns n Roses, David Lee Roth, Motley Crue, Kiss, Alice Cooper and many more. They were able to reach fans all across the world and the sunset strip seemed endless as fans clamored for a taste of the famed Faster Pussycat sleaze. The album went gold and to this day many hail “House of Pain” as one of the greatest power ballads of all time. The band’s line-up during this time was Taime Downe (vocals), Greg Steele (guitar), Brent Muscat (guitar), Kelly Nickels (bass) and Mark Michals (drums). Two years later, Faster Pussycat would record their most successful album Wake Me When It’s Over. The album received gold status; its sales being largely boosted by the hit single, “House of Pain”. Music videos were also produced for “House of Pain” and “Poison Ivy”. In 1990, they recorded a cover of Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” for a compilation called Rubáiyát: Elektra’s 40th Anniversary. A video was also filmed for this track. It featured Taime for the first time with dark hair. The song was also later included on the 1992 Belted, Buckled And Booted EP, which served as the single for “Nonstop To Nowhere” and also included two unreleased tracks.
Coming Soon! “Friends of Vollie Ray” “C'mon and take a free ride in our limo” ‘details on our Facebook page’ Also this month we will be having excursions in the limo to Galveston for Dickens On The Strand and Mardi Gras Call 281-900-3281 For Info.
In 1992 the band released the album Whipped and toured in support of it. Following the tour the band broke up, with each member heading in separate musical directions. Taime Downe decided to go in a more industrial rock direction working with the Chicago-based band Pigface, before relocating back to Los Angeles to form The Newlydeads, who would release three albums. Their self-titled debut, a remix album titled “Re-bound” and “Dead End”. In 2001 Taime Downe decided it was time to get Faster Pussycat back together to give the world another dose of the Hollywood Sleaze that had all but disappeared during the grunge era. Muscat and Steele rejoined the band along with The Newlydeads core members; Xristian Simon, Danny Nordahl and Chad Stewart. Faster Pussycat quickly put out a collection of industrial remixes of the band’s early songs, along with a bonus cover of KISS’ “I Was Made For Loving You” produced by Downe and played
to enthusiastic crowds around the world. During this time Muscat and Steele left again. 2006 saw the band’s first full-length release in 14 years, “The Power & The Glory Hole” and proved that under Taime’s leadership the band was in good hands. 2009 saw the release of a live album “Front Row for the Donkey Show”. Both were put out by Full Effect and the reviews were positive. In 2010 guitarist Ace Von Johnson joined Faster Pussycat cementing the current line-up. The interjection of fresh blood into the band was immediately noticeable as his high energy performance rejuvenated the band and their live performances. It was like 1987 again. Faster Pussycat is currently working on a new EP and doing what they’ve always done, touring heavily, rocking the fuck out of every venue they play and keeping the spirit of Hollywood Sleaze alive and well.

MUSIC NEWS It’s been 25+ years since the Toadies started playing rock music in Fort Worth, Texas. Through lineup changes, shelved albums, band break-ups, and reunions, the Toadies have experienced nearly everything. They burst onto the scene in 1994 with the breakthrough Rubberneck, including the singles “Possum Kingdom,” “Tyler.” Toadies returned to the studio in 1998 with the pressure of trying to match their first album’s success. That success didn’t translate to label support. “We got approval for a record,” says Vaden Todd Lewis, “ somewhere it got unapproved. So we went back to the drawing board.” Eventually some tracks made it onto Hell Below/Stars Above which came out seven years after Rubberneck. Disappointed and dejected, the band dissolved just a few months later. Meanwhile, “Possum Kingdom” never left the airwaves, enjoying constant rotation at modern rock stations. Fans clamored for a Toadies reunion. “The band never went all the way away,” says Lewis. A one-off show in 2006 became a fullfledged reunion and ever since, the Toadies have steadily built momentum. A third album, No Deliverance, came in 2008 and saw the band selling out shows nationwide while also playing Lollapalooza and ACL. The “lost album,” Feeler, finally materialized in 2010 followed by Play.Rock.Music. in 2012. In 2014, Toadies celebrated the 20th anniversary of Rubberneck. In 2016 Toadies released Heretics, an acoustic twist on classic songs. Their most recent release is The

Lower Side of Uptown, released in 2017. Best known as the creators of the 1995 grunge staple “Possum Kingdom,” the Toadies formed in 1989 and spent their infancy playing shows in Fort Worth, Texas. Musicians cycled in and out of the Toadies lineup from the very start, and the group soon became the domain of frontman Todd Lewis, a Pixies-influenced musician who wrote and
produced the band’s early releases. After issuing a series of homemade tapes and bringing drummer Mark Reznicek into the fold, the band released a proper EP, Pleather, in 1993. Pleather attracted attention from Interscope Records, which signed the Toadies soon after the EP’s release. Now financed by a major label, the Toadies entered the recording studio with producers Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf, who had previously worked together on Beck’s platinum-selling album Mellow Gold. Released in August 1994, Rubberneck brought the Toadies similar success by going gold the following year and platinum by the end of 1996. Most of that popularity was due to “Possum Kingdom,” a stark song with a 7/8 time signature that nevertheless became a Top 40 single. With replacement guitarist Clark Vogeler now on board, the group enjoyed its temporary space in the post-grunge landscape, playing high-profile shows with the likes of Bush, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Butthole Surfers. The Toadies had trouble producing a worthy follow-up to Rubberneck, however. Returning to the studio in 1997, they re-
corded a batch of new material and planned to release the resulting album, Feeler, in 1998. Interscope objected to the new songs and permanently shelved the project, prompting the disenchanted group to take a break for the rest of the decade. The Toadies eventually resumed their pace in 2001, salvaging some songs from the Feeler sessions and recording new material as well. Their long-awaited sophomore album finally arrived in the form of Hell Below/Stars Above, which featured production from Rothrock/Schnapf and a brief cameo by Elliott Smith, who played piano on the title track. During the national tour that followed, though, longtime bassist Lisa Umbarger announced her decision to throw in the towel, and the rest of the group followed suit. Best of Toadies: Live from Paradise appeared shortly after the group’s breakup. Although the Toadies reunited throughout the following years for one-off shows, they didn’t officially re-form until 2008, when Lewis, Reznicek, and Vogeler banded together once again to record No Deliverance. Longtime friend Doni Blair — whose previous band, Hagfish, had emerged from the same Dallas/Ft. Worth underground scene as the Toadies — played bass during the resulting tour; one of the dates was recorded for the 2008 release Rock Show. The year 2008 also saw the debut of the band’s annual rock festival, Dia de los Toadies, with the Toadies headlining and like-minded Southwest acts joining them on the bill. The Toadies continued their comeback in 2010 by reviving their long-scrapped album Feeler; Interscope refused to license the original recordings to the Toadies, so the group re-recorded the songs from the album and released it in the summer of 2010. An album of fresh material, Play. Rock. Music., was released in 2012, followed by Heretics in 2015, and The Lower Side of Uptown in 2017.

The Scout Bar Presents A December Packed With Great Concerts and Entertainment I just don’t know where to start. We were trying to single out one great act to do a story on for the Scout Bar, but they just have too many great acts coming through there this month. It really made this an impossible chore for us, so we’re going to touch on a few of them. Believe me, if you can’t find a show to see at the Scout Bar this month there’s something wrong with you.
The first show of the month is on December 1st, of course, That’s D.R.I. D.R.I. will be coming through with opening acts Deathwish, Devil’s Adversary, American Psychos, and Broke Off. Dirty Rotten Imbeciles formed in Houston, Texas in 1982. The band is currently composed of two of its founding members, vocalist Kurt Brecht and guitarist Spike Cassidy, as well as drummer Rob Rampy and bass player Greg Orr. D.R.I. Is has been on tour debuting material from their upcoming new album, But Wait...There’s More!, which is their first full-length studio album since 1995’s Full Speed Ahead, Here’s a show you don’t want to miss.
Now coming up on the 2nd of December is rapper Everlast, with openers Kollective Mindz. Erik Francis Schrody, known by his stage name Everlast, is a rapper, singer, and songwriter, commonly known for his solo song “What It’s Like” and as the front-man for rap group House of Pain. He was also part of the hip hop supergroup La Coka Nostra, which consists of members of House of Pain and other rappers. In 2000, he received a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal with Latin Rock musician Carlos Santana for “Put Your Lights On”. His most recent release is this year’s Whitey Ford’s House of Pain. You expect to hear songs from this album, as well as selections from his other seven studio releases. If rap is your thing, then this is a show your really going to have to be at.
Coming up December 6th will be a great Hip Hop act, the legendary Kottonmouth Kings, with opening acts The White Noize, S.E.J., High Hefner, and Lost Ninjas. Kottonmouth Kings is a hip hop group from Placentia, Orange County, California. The band officially formed in 1996, describing their eclectic sound as “psychedelic hip-hop punk rock”. Kottonmouth Kings are composed of Daddy X(singer of Humble Gods, X Pistols, former singer of Doggy Style), Lou Dog (drummer of Humble Gods and former drummer of Doggy Style), D-Loc, DJ Bobby B, and newest member/ vocalist, The Dirtball. The group first attracted mainstream attention with the song “Suburban Life”, which appeared on the soundtrack to the film Scream 2. The band is on tour in support of their recently released new studio album, Kingdom Come, which is reported to be the first part of a two-record release
under the same name. The album was released in April of this year. What can I say, it’s another great reason to hit the Scout Bar this month.
And the hits just keep on coming as Drowning Pool arrive at the Scout Bar on December 7th, the day after Kottonmouth Kings. Drowning Pool formed in Dallas, Texas in 1996. The band was named after the film The Drowning Pool. Since its formation, the band has consisted of guitarist C.J. Pierce, bassist Stevie Benton, and drummer Mike Luce, as well as a revolving cast of vocalists, the latest being Jasen Moreno. The band will be there performing songs from it’s first six studio albums. Rumor are that they may be debuting songs from an upcoming new studio album, however there is no release date on it yet. In an interview with 97.1 The Eagle, guitarist C.J. Pierce stated, “We’re working on new songs right now, which is awesome. We’re working on tunes for the next record. We have a bunch of stuff on the plate. Everybody’s brought amazing stuff, material. The thing with this is just to try and go through and see what we’re gonna do on the next record. So we’ll hash out all the ideas and songs and then start narrowing it down. So it’s nice to have more than enough to go through.” We’re looking forward to this show and hopefully they’ll be bringing a few surprises with them.
Now the show we’re most excited about is coming in to the Scout Bar on December 12th. That’s The Guitar Collective III featuring Angel Vivaldi and Nita Strauss. Angel Vivaldi is a guitarist, songwriter, producer, philanthropist and environmentalist. Voted 3rd “Best Guitarist” in 2014 by Prog-Sphere, he began his solo career in 2003. Vivaldi has self-released 5 records, Revelations, The Speed of Dark, Universal Language, Away With Words- Part 1, and Synapse. In 2015, he released a cover of Joe Satriani’s Crystal Planet single. He’s known for his virtuoso guitar playing style and cinematic music videos. Along with Angel Vivaldi will be guitarist extraordinaire Nita Strauss. Nita has been wowing audiences for years with her guitar prowess. A lot of you will remember Nita from her days with The Iron Maidens, an all-female Iron Maiden tribute, but most of you probably have seen her on stage with Alice Cooper. She just kills with Alice Cooper, performing some of the most intricate solos you’ve ever heard. When we saw her recently at White Oak Music Hall with Alice Cooper, she was truly extraordinary. We just can’t wait to see her. She has just recently released her first solo studio/instrumental album, Controlled Chaos. We’ve been looking for a copy of this new album, so we hope she brings some with her to the Scout Bar. I just can’t wait to hear it. This is definitely a ‘mustsee’ show for us. Openers for this show are Jacky Vincent, The Steve Satchel Band, and the Russ Driver Band. On December 13th, another cool Hip Hop act arrives at The Scout Bar, The Goodie Mob, with frontman Ceelo Green, along with openers Cure for Paranoia, and Wayne Brezz.. Goodie Mob is a hip hop group based in Atlanta, Georgia. It was formed in 1991 and currently consists of members Big Gipp, Khujo, Cee-Lo, and T-Mo. Goodie Mob is widely considered one of the founding hip hop acts of the (commerically viable) Dirty South movement. “GOODIE
MOb”, as it’s written on their album covers, means the “GOOD DIE Mostly Over bullshit”. Cee-Lo notes in a song off the Soul Food album that, “[If] you take out one ‘O’ it stands for ‘GOD Is Every Man Of blackness.’ “ After a brief hiatus in 2004, Goodie Mob reformed in 2008 and in 2013 released their reunion album, “Age Against the Machine”. You can expect to hear some great tunes this night from their 5 studio albums, as well as a song or two from Ceelo Green’s solo career.... Another great show you really don’t want to miss if you’re into the Hip Hop movement.
and Walter Flakus formed the band in 1986 in Macomb, Illinois. The band released an extended play in 1992, followed by four studio albums from 1994 to 2001. Stabbing Westward announced a dissolution on February 9, 2002. Two compilation albums were later released in 2003. Stabbing Westward reunited in 2016 to celebrate their 30th anniversary together, and has since continued to perform live shows. This should be a real interesting show for you to check out. This tour celebrates the release of their 1998 release, Darkest Days. As you can see, the Scout Bar is just packed with great touring bands this month, with a sound and genre for just about everyone out there. Without a doubt we’re sure you can all find somebody to check out this month at the Scout Bar... And don’t forget, they’ve got a great New Year’s Eve planned as well. They will be featuring the five-piece progressive rock act from Houston, Anova Skyway, along with Erase The Virus, Sleep Labs, and Para Bellum. You’d best get your tickets now for this show. They’ll be going fast. What a great way to ring in the New Year! Be sure to drop by the Scout Bar this month for the best in entertainment!!
On December 16th, Stabbing Westward will be bringing their Darkest Days Anniversary Tour to the Scout Bar with open acts, The Hunger, and Provision. Stabbing Westward is an American industrial rock band. Christopher Hall

Texas Flood, The Stevie Ray Vaughan Tribute, Performs at The Concert Pub North Tonight at The Concert Pub North, it was an evening of Stevie Ray Vaughan music brought to us through the courtesy of Tommy Katana and Texas Flood. Texas Flood has become one of the premier blues bands in all of North Texas. Evolving from the original tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Texas Flood pays tribute to the legends as well as the future of the blues through their own music and style. With an in-your-face show and raw high energy playing Tommy Katona takes the listener on a journey through the blues. The club was packed to the hilt and everybody was having a blast this night. Besides Stevie Ray Vaughan’s great and powerful music, Texas Flood also graced us with some great tunes from a few other artists, such as Jimi Hendrix. These guys do a fantastic job recreating an evening of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. Without a doubt, this is the best SRV Tribute that exists today. I’m sure glad I made it out here tonight. And yes, you guessed it, we’ve got a couple of videos from this night’s performance to share with you on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television, so if you want to listen to some great tunes from Tommy Katana and Texas Flood, just heat to our website at http://www.houstonmusicnews.net
MUSIC NEWS Baroness (Queen Tribute) Perform at the Concert Pub North This was a bit different for us. We dropped by The Concert Pub North and we were pleasantly surprised with something completely different. It was Baroness, a female fronted tribute to Queen. The band sounded surprisingly good. We didn’t know how we’d like a female version of Freddie Mercury, but the singer did a fantastic job. It was a great evening of Bohemian Rhapsody and all of our favorite Queen songs. It really made for a great evening of entertainment. I like it when we can experience something completely different. Check them out sometime when they return to this area.

MUSIC NEWS Luna Lunacy Performs at Volllie Ray’s Circus When we saw that Luna Lunacy (top left) was performing over at Vollie Ray’s Circus, we headed over there for something real different. Luna Lunacy isn’t just your average rock band, these guys take it one step further and put on a real show. Sloanie Skeletonie Robley does an excellent job as front woman of this amazing outfit.. Her heartfelt vocals can be felt throughout her entire performance. On guitar is Dave Robley, and he is one helluva of a guitarist. He really turns out some fantastic riffs. Finishing it up is the rhythm section of bassists Ronnie Kopal or Roger Aguirre along with drummer Chad Pleasant. These guys do an equally fantastic job no matter which bassist is on stage that night. Their show this night at Vollie Ray’s was nothing less than inspiring. If you really want to break out of the norm and see something different, then Luna Lunacy is definitely a band you need to check out. We’ve got two videos from this performance for you to check out right now, but please feel free to check out some of the other videos we’ve done of Luna Lunacy in the past. They rock!! We hope you enjoy these. Check them out right now on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television at http://www.houstonmusicnews.net. Opening up for Luna Lunacy was The Smashed Idols (top right). The Smashed Idols rip it up with hooky guitar, bass, and drums. They sing about space, alien invasions, zombies, and dinosaurs with an occasional fit of maniacal laughter thrown in for good measure. The Jam “Bring The Invasion” was influenced by Stephen Hawking’s warning that we need to colonize other planets before we get visited by our nasty neighbors. Check them out on YouTube.

Los Lonely Boys Perform at The Clarion This month Los Lonely Boys will be performing at The Clarion at Brazosport College for two great nights, December 6th and 7th. Los Lonely Boys: Austin, Texas – Lots of musicians compare their careers to roller-coaster rides, but Los Lonely Boys have had so many close-your-eyes-and-hang-on moments in the 14 years since they recorded their self-titled debut, they should buy an amusement park. The story of how the Garza brothers – vocalist/guitarist Henry, bassist/vocalist and drummer/ vocalist Ringo – rode their bluesy “Texican rock” sound from San Angelo, Texas, to worldwide fame is one of rock’s great Cinderella tales. But the story of how they’ve persevered in the face of subsequent challenges is just as compelling. In 2013, they canceled 43 shows and paused work on their last album, Revelation, after Henry was seriously hurt when he fell from a stage in Los Angeles. A couple of years previously, vocal cord nodules had forced Jojo to stop singing for months. And in 2015, their mother passed away. Their strong brotherly bond helped them through those rough spots – just as it did when they made the hard decision to step out from under their father’s musical leadership and form their own band after performing with him since childhood. The desire to follow their musical muse still drives them today, according to Jojo. “There is no rest for those who are chosen to be musicians,” he says. “Ideas for songs are constant. We are being charged with what will be spread through our songs. We want to make music that brings people together. “We’re all about having a good time, but we also make an effort to write about subjects that matter. Life, death, love, hate, compassion, transgression, light, darkness, truth; they’re what we’ve always been about. We’re not interested in songs about how you look and what kind of car you drive and how much money you have. We want to create music that’s about the love
and energy and spirit we all carry. It comes from a bigger source than ourselves.” That’s why they titled their 2014 release Revelation. Its songs were meant to serve as mirrors of sorts, reflecting aspects of our lives in ways that reveal new insights. “As musicians and artists,” Jojo says, “we’re here to connect with people.” Released on their LonelyTone imprint under Austin-based indie label Playing in Traffic Records, Revelation maintains the infectiously melodic mix of bluesy rock ’n’ roll and rootsy soul that’s long endeared Los Lonely Boys to their fiercely loyal fans. Flawless harmonies and soaring solos remain trademarks, but in these songs, they explore rhythms from conjunto (“Blame It On Love”) to reggae (“Give A Little More”), along with rustic acoustic textures (“It’s Just My Heart Talkin’”) and baroque pop shadings (“There’s Always Tomorrow”). “We’re always trying to broaden our horizons musically,” Jojo says. “We’re always looking for new ways to communicate, so we experimented with different sounds and production approaches.” They also turned to co-writers, including Americana icon Radney Foster, pop tunesmiths Matthew Gerrard and David Quiñones, BlackEyed Peas collaborators George Pajon Jr. and Keith Harris, and Ozomatli’s Raul Pacheco. Their scare with Henry caused all three brothers to re-examine not only how they make music, but how they conduct their lives. “The whole experience was a wake-up call,” Jojo admits. “It reminded us of what’s really important.” Once again, they affirmed that’s family. And music. For this trio, the two are inseparable. In fact, the sons of Enrique “Ringo” Garza Sr. are a second-generation sibling band; their dad and his brothers played conjunto as the Falcones before the elder Garza formed a band with his sons. They were still teens when he moved them
to Nashville, hoping to hit career paydirt. But their big break came after they returned to Texas and began playing Austin clubs in the early 2000s. One day, Willie Nelson’s nephew heard some demos. Next thing they knew, Willie showed up at a gig. Then he showcased them at Farm Aid, fronted recording time at his famed Pedernales Studio and even guested on their album. Released in 2003 on startup label Or Records, Los Lonely Boys got picked up by Epic and rereleased. Propelled by its No. 1 single, “Heaven,” it wound up selling over 2 million copies, spending 76 weeks on the Billboard Top 200 album chart and earning them a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group. Their dream-come-true rise was chronicled in the documentary, Los Lonely Boys: Cottonfields and Crossroads, directed by fellow San Angelo native Hector Galán. Another dream came true when Carlos Santana invited them to guest on his 2005 album, All That I Am. They also released Live at the Fillmore that year. Their father and Nelson joined them on 2006’s Sacred,
and in 2007, their cover of John Lennon’s “Whatever Gets You Through the Night” became the second single from the album Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur. Forgiven and Christmas Spirit arrived in 2008, followed in 2009 by 1969, an all-covers EP homage to rock’s most influential era and their first LonelyTone release through Playing in Traffic Records. Then they traveled to Iraq to entertain American troops and embarked on an acoustic tour, documented with the 2010 album, Keep on Giving: Acoustic Live. Rockpango came in 2011. They’re now creating follow-ups to Revelation’s musical outpouring. If anything, Jojo says, life’s upheavals have tightened their bond even more. “We stick together,” he adds, “and we’re trying to pass on that feeling of brotherhood, of familia, in all the music we make.”

Quinn The Brain Perform at Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar We’d heard a lot of good things about Quinn The Brain, so we dropped by Dan Electro’s to check them out. As usual for us, it was a great decision on our part. We found them to be very intertaining and they had quite a few fine songs with some great melodies and thought provoking lyrics. Arta Salehi did a fine job on vocals and guitar. Her vocals were fantastic. That coupled with the fine rhythm section of Billy Kimmel on drums and Jacob Detiveaux on bass made for some great song arrangements. It was a really good show. The band is currently working on a new project in Austin right now and we just can’t wait to hear the finished project. A big “thanks” goes out to Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar for bringing in such great local entertainment. Keep it up guys.

The TC5 is Robert Estep on guitar and vocals, Tom Callins on guitar and vocals, and Ransom Buller on bass and vocals. Graveltooth Performs at Fitzgerald’s Tonight at Fitzgerald’s we were treated to the sounds of a new band for us, Graveltooth. Since forming in 2015 in Hudson Bend, TX, Graveltooth has become known for their explosive and gutsy rock and roll, heartfelt lyrics and soulful grooves that often venture into psychedelic terrain. Their sound is an amalgamation of many influences but is ultimately about taking an old school, down and dirty approach to music. It’s a sound that transports the listener to a seemingly long lost era of highflying guitars and rock’n roll bravado. The band was there debuting tunes from their new album, “Can’t Slow Down.” This band did an excellent job there. We really liked the tunes off their new album, and the band put on a splendid show, and we all had a great time there. I know they racked up a few new fans while we were there. In fact, we’re fans now too. Can’t wait to see them again. Keep your eyes open for these guys, they’re going places. In the meantime, if you weren’t at the show, and you probably weren’t, check out the videos from this gig on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television at http:// www.houstonmusicnews.net

Attraction Performs at Rock N Ray’s Nightclub
We went to the ‘Grand Opening’ of a new club this past month. It’s great to have a new place in town. Rock N Ray’s Nightclub is located conveniently off of I-10 East at 6919 Lyons Ave. Owner of the club, Ray Romo tells us that he plans on bringing in the best Rock acts to perform there on Saturday nights. Rock N Ray’s will be open every Thursday night through Sunday and features beer, wine, and setups for those of you that need something harder. For those of you that like to ‘jam’, Ray’s will be featuring an Open Jam on Sundays from 2-8pm. For those of you that just like to watch, this month they have a cool blend of entertainment. Bands performing there this month include Haywired (12/1), Epic Blaze (12/8), White Room (12/15) and Chapa’s Tribe (12/22). If you’re in a band and you’re looking for a new spot to perform at, give Ray a call at 713-330-8284. And by the way, Ray is a musician himself. In fact, that’s Ray in the picture here on guitar with his band Attraction. This band was really Goooood! They really breathed some new life into some of those crazy old Classic Rock songs we all love. We’re looking forward to seeing them there again. Treasures Estate that They really did a great job performing a couple of our favorites, like Sales & More “Purple Haze,” and “Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers.” It was a blast Treasures Estate that night. They certainly had a great crowd for opening night! Good Sales & More says, “We luck Ray and Sylvia on your new venture. We’re sure you’ll do a great work for you”! covering job there. Josh Garrett Performs at The Big Easy When we saw that Josh Garrett was going to be in town over at The Big Easy, we headed over there for some great “Blues” action. Josh is a really good guitarist and really plays some tasty tunes. Josh Garrett has been entertaining audience all over the country for the last five years with his own style of Louisiana Blues. Garrett’s style is a mixture of LA Blues, New Orleans Funk, Zydeco, and Rock ‘n’ Roll. “I’m drawn to all things Louisiana, it’s my culture and I try to embrace it,” says Garrett. He received an old acoustic guitar from his father when he was eleven years old. “[The guitar] was an old ’76 Alvarez. It was his guitar and he gave it to me. I was glad to get it and I haven’t put it down since.” say Garrett. And we’re certainly glad he didn’t. This guy is hot. Josh Garrett has become known for his soulful vocals, emotion infused guitar styling, and that South Louisiana flavor that only comes from those with Louisiana in there blood. His show this night at The Big Easy was a helluva lot of fun. We certainly had a lot of fun, as well as the packed house of fans he brought in. I didn’t think the audience was going to let him leave the stage. They just wanted more and more, and he obliged them. Great show. If you get a chance to see him, please do. In the meantime you will just have to be satisfied with the two videos we have posted on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television at http://www.houstonmusicnews.net.

The Mark May Band Perform at The Jailhouse Saloon We headed out to The Jailhouse Saloon in Olde Town Spring this night to see our old buddy, Mark May. Mark has one top notch band. Every time we’ve ever seen them, they’ve sounded fantastic. Tonight was no exception. Mark and Billy Well just tore up the stage with their guitars. I swear, these two were born with guitars in their hands.... no rattles, just guitars!! Really, when it comes to “The Blues,” the Mark May Band is one of the leaders in the business. Mark has several albums under his belt now, and yet he still continues to pay homage to his guitar heroes with great productions of their songs. You really need to hear his version of “Ohio”. It just kills!!! This night “Ohio” stretched out to near 15 minutes of pure ecstasy. Needless to say, the show here tonight at The Jailhouse Saloon was explosive. It was another great show by one of Texas’s greatest Blues artists. Next time you get a chance, make sure you see Mark when he performs anywhere in your area. In the meantime, you can sit back and watch the two videos we have posted from this night’s show on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television. Enjoy!

Morgan McKay Performs at Loaded Barrels We decided to check out the new club Loaded Barrels on FM 1960, and we’re certainly glad we did. We saw another new act there that was very impressive, Morgan McKay. Morgan was very impressive as she fielded requests from the crowd there and performed nearly every one of them. Her repertoire was pretty varied as well. She performed some John Denver (“Take Me Home, Country Roads”), Tanya Tucker (“Delta Dawn”), Kacey Musgraves (“Keep It To Yourself”), Janis Joplin (“Me and Bobby McGee”), and Reba McIntire (Why Haven’t I Heard From You”). Yeah, she was pretty impressive. And the club there is impressive as well. They’ve done a lot of remodeling there since when it used to be the Oz Bar. You won’t even recognize it now. On top of that, they’re brining in a lot of great acts. You’ll just have to check out their ad in this issue. Theres just too many great acts to mention here. Remember, the next time you’re up in the 1960 area, drop by Loaded Barrels.
John A. Miller Performs at Cruiser’s Ice House
When we were in Santa Fe the other evening, we dropped by Cruiser’s Ice House. On stage was bluesman John A. Miller. John has been performing around these parts for more years than I can remember. He always sounds good, his guitarmanship is impecable and he always has a great band. On stage with him was my old high school buddy, Art Elder on bass. I’ve know Art for longer than he’d probably like to remember. Everytime I see these guys, it’s like a high school reunion. I love it. John and the guys were hot tonight and the great old blues continued on next page songs were flowing like fine wine. It really made for a good time.

Hold On Hollywood, also known as HOH, has been taking the Houston music scene by storm. They have been conquering Houston music playing pretty much all venues, Buzzfest, and they even played with Bon Jovi! They love their fans and take time out of their busy schedules to make sure to have meet-n-greets. Support Local Music awards also have HOH and a few of the members nominated in a couple categories. It is worth taking a peek at, you might be surprised. A great set of guys who are fun to be around and even better to look up to as role models which is why they are here as an honorable mention. These boys are going places fast! You need to see them live and they are on a steady upward track to stardom! Ian and Nick also play acoustic gigs in-between shows with the band and they are definitely worth checking out. Well-rounded musicians, and also an amazing set of good guys, you should definitely hit up the next show these boys are playing! It is well worth it! Which is why I am putting them down with a stamp of approval as a must see. Great sound, awesome music, fun crowds and good times to be had. You shouldn’t miss their next show! You’ll be sorry if you do! Scooter Brown Band is an outstanding country band with that southern rock feel that really gets the crowd intrigued. Although they play all over the country, Houston is a place that feels like home. They take time out of their busy schedules to play benefits and help support our local community. Veterans have a big spot in their heart, supporting the troops means a great deal to Scooter Brown. They came down from Nashville, TN to play Spring Texas Music fest hosted by Charlie Digs. Spring TX Music Fest is a large event honoring our veterans where they have auctions and even gave away a free truck to a lucky veteran. Scooter Brown has always supported our community which is why they deserve an honorable mention. A very good group of guys, playing great music and doing great things with their fame. Make sure to make it out to their next show I guarantee you will not regret it and will have found a new band to jam on the regular.

ABKCO Records Reissues The Rolling Stones’ Beggars Banquet
ABKCO RECORDS has just re-released the Rolling Stones classic LP, Beggars Banquet (50th Anniversary Edition in all formats, LP, SACD, and CD. Beggars Banquet was the final release by the original lineup of The Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Billy Wyman and Charlie Watts. At the time the album was heralded by the music press of that era as the finest work of The Rolling Stones to date. Rolling Stones magazine jumped all over it with praise from its publisher Jann Wenner, who declared, “The Rolling Stones have returned, and they are bringing back rock and roll with them. They have finished their next album — titled Beggars’ Banquet — and it is the best record they have yet done. In all aspects it is a great album; great Rolling Stones’ material and performance; a great rock and roll album, without pretense, an achievement of significance in both lyrics and music.” Rolling Stone magazine also put Mick on the cover of that issue, with the headline, “The Stones Make the Great Comeback of Their Career.” Legendary rock journalist Ben FongTorres declares that Beggars Banquet is “an album flush with masterful and growling instant classics” that “responds more to the chaos of ’68 and to themselves than to any fellow artists . . . the mood is one of dissolution and resignation, in the guise of a voice of ambivalent authority.” The album contained a couple of songs that rank at the top of most popular Rolling Stones songs ever written. Those two songs are “Sympathy for the Devil,” and “Street Fighting Man.” “Sympathy for the Devil was written by Mick Jagger after girlfriend Marianne Faithfull gave him a copy of the novel, “The Master and Margarita.” The story line of the book involves the devil as he visits the Soviet Union during the Stalin Era. Jagger originally intended for the song to be performed in more of a folk style, but after Keith Richards got his hands on it, he changed the tempo and turned it into the rock classic we know now. “Street Fighting Man” is probably the most politically outspoken song that the songs have written. It was inspired by Mick Jagger’s first hand experience at an anti-war rally at the U.S. Embassy in London. At the same time the same anti-war sentiment was being expressed across the globe from France to the United States. Jagger told Rolling Stone in 1997, “It was a very strange time in France. But not only in France but also in America, because of the Vietnam War and these endless disruptions . . . I thought it was a very good thing at the time. There was all this violence going on. I mean, they almost toppled the government in France . . .” This new reissue disc contains all the glory of the original release along with some extras. Besides containing the original album release, it also features a separates disc containing the original mono recording of “Sympathy For The Devil,” and an additional flexidisc, titled “Hello, This Is Mick Jagger!” that contains a telephone interview that Mick Jagger did with a representative of King Records in Tokyo, who distributed he Rolling Stones records in Japan. A humorous moment in the interview recorded over the telephone,
halfway around the world, while the band was busy recording the yet-unnamed album Beggars Banquet in Olympic Sound Studios, Jagger was asked “What do you think is the future direction of your music?” And with no hesitation, he responded “Sideways.” Other songs on the album include “No Expectations,” “Dear Doctor,” “Parachute Woman,” “Jig-Saw Puzzle,” “Street Fighting Man,” “Prodigal Son,” “Stray Cat Blues,” “Factory Girl,” and “Salt Of The Earth.” The really cool thing about this album
is that it comes basically with two covers, the original intended cover that was rejected by the record label, as well as the traditional cover that was finally issue. The banned cover featured a series of graffiti that was written on the bathroom wall of a Porsche dealership, along with an open toilet seat. The released cover appears to be a simple wedding invitation with the name of the band and the name of the album. At the bottom left is the initials R.S.V.P. This is one album you should definitely pick up. We received one of the limited quan-
tity vinyl editions that come packaged in a gatefold jacket and its quality was extraordinary. Without a doubt this will be a fine addition to your album collection.
