Heart Brings Their “Love Alive” Tour To The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion On August 22nd We have good news for Heart fans this month. Ann and Nancy Wilson are back together again and heading to Houston for a concert at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on August 22nd. After a three year break, the band is back together for a summer tour. Also performing with Heart on their “Love Alive” tour will be Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, as well as opener Elle King. Nancy Wilson is excited about the tour and the brief hiatus the band took to collect their thoughts, “I could see it was time for Heart to have a break, We’d been slogging through tour after tour fairly nonstop and were starting to burn out a little bit. Things had just reached a heavy climax. Working with my other new band Roadcase Royale was a lifesaver. Writing brand new songs playing shows and delivering a new album with them was the medicine my soul needed.” Ann Wilson chimed in with, “Both Nancy and I have stretched our wings in life these last three years. We’ve both lived and loved. We have breathed and traveled and experienced life. We come to this tour with fresh energy and oxygen.” When it came to discussing the sisters’ choice in opening acts, Nancy Wilson said, “I think this year is a good year to show the collective impact of some powerful women in music. We would usually steer clear of the female-centric concept, but in the light of current events it seems like the right statement at the right time.” Ann Wilson also added to this, “Joan we have known for a long time. We have hung out and appreciated each other’s music onstage and off and Elle King is my favorite new artist. She has so much soul and attitude! We are so thrilled to host all these artists on the ‘Love
Alive’ tour. Speaking with US radio station Eagle 102.3 in February, the sisters said Heart would bring a “fresh energy” to the shows and that the live dates will “look, feel and sound bigger than other Heart tours so far.” Ann added: “Calling the tour ‘Love Alive’ was something Nancy and I felt instantly good about. We have always had many lovethemed mottos along the way like Love Rules, Love Wins, Love is It – and of course it’s a very cool song as well.” History favors strong women. When women stand up for themselves, show up, and speak out, change occurs time and time again, whether in politics, culture, entertainment, or music. There might be no women stronger—and louder—than the legendary ladies of Heart. Formed by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame®-inducted group not only pioneered the female-fronted rock band, for all intents and purposes, but they also soundtracked four decades and counting. Throughout this time, the band sold over 35 million records, garnered four Grammy® Award nominations, landed ten Top 10 albums, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and achieved “the longest span of top-10 albums on the Billboard charts by a female-led band.” Ann and Nancy were both born in California and raised in Washington state and even early on, it was obvious that music would be their destiny. By ten-years-old, Nancy positioned herself as a future guitar virtuoso as Ann developed a bold, bluesy alto voice informed by an intense passion for the likes of Led Zeppelin. They formally become Heart in 1974 and transformed into a Pacific Northwest favorite in the process.

By 1975, they had recorded their seminal debut Dreamboat Annie. Bordering rock and heavy metal fastened with folk songcraft, the platinum breakthrough spent 100 weeks on the charts and spawned a string of smashes such as “Magic Man,” “Dreamboat Annie (Fantasy Child),” and “Crazy On You.” Signature hit “Barracuda” bared its teeth on the triple-platinum 1977 epic Little Queen. As the musicians sold out shows worldwide and continued their multiplatinum reign on Magazine, Dog & Butterfly, and Greatest Hits Live, they recorded the definitive self-titled Heart in 1985—ten years removed from Dreamboat Annie. Vaulting to superstar status, Heart bowed at #1 on the Billboard Top 200, went quintuple-platinum, earned a Grammy® Award nomination, and yielded “If Looks Could Kill,” “What About Love,” “Never,” and “These Dreams,” which captured the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, which features Nancy on lead vocals. Maintaining this unparalleled momentum, Bad Animals followed in 1987, featuring the #1 hit “Alone,” and reaching triple-platinum status in addition to notching a pair of Grammy® Award nods. The double-platinum Grammy®-nominated Brigade ignited the nineties and served up the gold-certified “All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You.” In 1993, Desire Walks On illuminated their shadow over the grunge explosion with a guest appearance from none other than Alice In Chains frontman Layne Staley. 1995’s The Road Home represented a full circle moment as Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones helmed the gold-selling live disc. In between a handful of intermittent breaks, Greatest Hits 1985-2000 [2000] and Essential Heart [2002] would both also be minted platinum over the next decade. The aughts represented another watershed era for Heart. They revved back up to the Top 10 of the Billboard Top 200 with Red Velvet Car in 2010 as Fanatic soared to the Top 25 two years later. 2012 saw their first-ever memoir Kicking & Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock & Soul arrive as a New York Times bestseller. Meanwhile, they brought the house down at that year’s Kennedy Center Honors, moving Robert Plant to tears during an historic rendition of “Stairway to Heaven.” Heart commemorated the 40th Anniversary of Dreamboat Annie with a 2016 festival and hosted a full celebration in the UK at the hallowed Royal Albert Hall. 2016 saw the release of Beautiful Broken, Heart’s sixteenth album and their first on Concord Records, the album saw the group “cherry picking” songs from their catalog and rerecording
and rethinking them. Following the album’s release, Heart launched a summer headlining run with Joan Jett & the Blackhearts and Cheap Trick. A new era has commenced in 2019. Ann and Nancy welcome a bevy of female powerhouses to join them on their biggest package tour to date—the “Love Alive” Summer Tour. Heart headlines a bill that includes Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Sheryl Crow, Brandi Carlile, Elle King, and Lucie Silvas and rolls through major markets everywhere. The group’s impact resounds far beyond the stage. Ann lent her voice to classic motion picture themes, spanning “Almost Paradise” from “Footloose,” “Best Man in the World” from “The Golden Child,” and “Surrender To Me” from “Tequila Sunrise.” In 2018, Ann released the critically acclaimed Immortal album. It features 10 musically diverse tracks that pay tribute to some of Ann s influences and friends who’ve recently passed and whose music poignantly lives on. She also performed solo dates and hit the road with Jeff Beck and Paul Rodgers for the “Stars Align Tour.” Nancy has also built a successful career as a film composer. Her composing credits include scores for the Cameron Crowe films: “Say Anything (1989),” “Almost Famous” (2000), “Vanilla Sky” (2001), “Elizabethtown” (2005), and “Jerry Maguire”(1995) [main theme]. Most recently, in 2017, Nancy teamed up with former Prince’s New Power Generation band member and R&B singer Liv Warfield to form the soulful, rock super group, Roadcase Royale. They released First Things First in September and the group went on to open for Bob Seger on his 2017 farewell tour. Additionally, Ann and Nancy penned a 2015 children’s book, Dog & Butterfly, named after their smash of the same name. Giving back whenever possible, they stand out as committed philanthropists supporting nearly onehundred charitable causes. Heart’s influence can be palpably felt everywhere from rock and heavy metal to hiphop and pop. Eminem, Lil Wayne, G-Eazy, Nas, and more have famously sampled the band’s catalog, while Céline Dion, Fergie, Halestorm and many others have covered them in the studio and on stage. As a result, their music resonates in nearly every corner of pop culture. As time goes on, the sound, spirit, and soul of Heart only gets louder with each passing year. In the end, they ultimately opened doors for countless musicians to follow, and their place in rock’s pantheon as pioneers

Pure Noise Tour with Stick To Your Guns and More! Back for the first time in three long years, and presented by Pure Noise Records and Revolver, Pure Noise Tour has returned for 2019 with a badass, power-packed lineup including Stick to Your Guns, Counterparts and Terror, with support from Sanction and Year of the Knife. The concert will take place in Houston at Warehouse Live on August 15th. “The PN tour is going to be the sickest heavy tour of the summer,” says Counterparts vocalist Brendan Murphy. “The lineup is insane and I’m glad we were asked to be a part of it so I don’t have to sit at home and watch all my friends have fun without me.” Stick to Your Guns frontman Jesse Barnett shares a similarly enthusiastic outlook, explaining, “Heading out on tour with so many great bands and friends is one of the best parts of being in a band, and we are very much looking forward to all of that coming together with this tour.” Metalcore/screamo outfit Stick to Your Guns formed in 2003 under the leadership of vocalist Jesse Barnett in Orange County, California. Drawing comparisons to such names as Comeback Kid and Protest the Hero, the band was soon noticed by Sumerian Records honcho Ash Avildsen, who put the already buzzworthy band on a live showcase. The band signed a deal with the label soon after. The band’s first album, For What It’s Worth, was released in 2007, a year that Stick to Your Guns would spend on the road, consolidating their skills and building on their early successes. The band eventually moved over to indie metal label Century Media, which released the follow-up full-length Comes from the Heart in the spring of 2008. Lineup changes and a move to Sumerian Records preceded the band’s third studio long-player, 2010’s acclaimed Hope Division, and in 2012 they released the fiery Diamond, which featured the Occupy Wall Street movementsupporting single “Bringing You Down (A New World Overthrow).” Arriving in 2015, the John Feldmann-produced Disobedient would be their last outing for Sumerian, as 2016 saw the group join up with Pure Noise for the EP Better Ash Than Dust.
The next year they released their sixth LP, True View. A fierce hardcore band who’ve won a growing audience for their relentless, technically precise attack, Counterparts were formed in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 2007. Originally known as Brigade, the group was formed by vocalist Brendan Murphy, guitarists Jesse Doreen and Curtis Washik, bassist Eric Bazinet, and drummer Ryan Juntilla. The band was also briefly known as Sharia before adopting the name Counterparts, and they began playing extensively around Ontario. In 2009, Washik left the group, with Alex Re stepping in as their new guitarist, and Counterparts set out on a demanding cross-Canadian tour. In 2009, Counterparts signed with the Canadian punk label Verona Records, who released the band’s debut album, Prophets, in 2010. Also in 2010, Juntilla left Counterparts, with Chris Needham taking over on drums, and the band cut a split EP with Exalt. Following lots of road work in Canada and the United States, Counterparts struck a deal with the American independent label Victory Records in 2011, and began work on their second album. During the sessions, Needham left the band, and Juntilla returned to his spot behind the drum kit. Counterparts’ first album for Victory, The Current Will Carry Us, appeared in the fall of 2011, and once again the band hit the road. By the time the tour hit Canada, Juntilla had once again parted ways with Counterparts, and Kyle Brownlee of the
deathcore group Majesty sat in on the road; in 2012, it was announced that Kelly Bilan of I Am Committing a Sin was now Counterparts’ official drummer. In July 2013, the band returned with their third full-length album, The Difference Between Hell and Home, and after the first rounds of touring, Re announced he would be playing his final show with Counterparts in December 2013. The group went through more personnel shakeups before emerging in 2017 with a new lineup, with vocalist Murphy joined by guitarists Adrian Lee and Blake Hardman, bassist Tyler Williams, and returning drummer Kyle Brownlee. This edition of Counterparts released the band’s fifth album, You’re Not You Anymore, through Pure Noise Records in September 2017. Terror is an L.A.-based hardcore band formed by East Coast transplant and vocalist Scott Vogel, formerly lead singer with Buffalo, New York bands like Despair, Sludgefest, and Buried Alive. Founded in April 2002 shortly after Vogel’s relocation, Terror issued a four-song demo that circulated among the underground scene before releasing a 7" through Takeover Records. After a lot of touring, the guys — including guitarist Todd Jones (ex-Carry On), and First Blood members drummer Nick Jett (also of Carry On and Piece by Piece), bassist Carl Schwartz, and guitarist Doug Weber — signed with Bridge 9 and entered a Cleveland studio to record. The resulting nine-song EP, Lowest of the Low, was released in January 2003, and true to form, the band spent the rest of the year touring, including a stint in Europe with Biohazard. With Frank Novinec replacing Jones, Terror signed with Trustkill Records, and issued two albums of metallic hardcore through the label: 2004’s One with the Underdogs and 2006’s Always the Hard Way. Schwartz had left the band before Christmas 2005 to concentrate fully on First Blood and he was replaced on bass by Jonathan Buske; Novinec left as well, in his case to join Hatebreed, and Martin Stewart (ex-Donnybrook!) was soon welcomed on second guitar. In 2008, Terror dropped a studio album, The Damned, The Shamed, as well as an archival live set, CBGB OMFUG Masters: Live 6/10/04 The Bowery Collection. By this point, the Terror lineup shifted again, with bassist Jonathan Buske replacing Carl Schwartz in 2006. In 2010, the band dropped Keepers of the Faith, which was the first album to feature guitarist Jordan Posner (who’d replaced Doug Weber) and bassist David Wood (who took over for Jonathan Buske). This gave the group a stable lineup that would last through three studio albums (2013’s Live by the Code, 2015’s The 25th Hour, and 2018’s Total Retaliation), two EPs (2012’s Hard Lessons/Only the Devil Knows and 2017’s The Walls Will Fall), and another live album (2010’s No Regrets, No Shame), as well as extensive touring.

Hawthorne Heights Perform at The Scout Bar Hawthorne Heights are embarking on a tour this summer in celebration of the 15th anniversary of their debut full-length, The Silence In Black And White. Emery will be joining them on the road as support, whose debut album The Weak’s End also turns 15 this year. The will be performing this month at The Scout Bar on August 27th. One of the biggest breakout successes of the new millennial emo-punk explosion, Hawthorne Heights found huge success with their first two albums, both of which went gold — their 2006 single “Saying Sorry” also found gold status. Originally called A Day in the Life, the Ohio-based band endured personal hardships, numerous lineup changes, and a landscape of shifting musical styles over the years, but continued to hone their particular brand of angst-fueled pop-punk well into the 2010s. Composed of drummer Eron Bucciarelli, bassist Matt Ridenour, vocalist/guitar player J.T. Woodruff, and guitarists Casey Calvert and Micah Carli, Hawthorne Heights built their fan base on a demo recording and a series of self-booked national tours that saw them sharing stages with the likes of From Autumn to Ashes and the Descendents. In 2003, they signed with Chicago label Victory Records, resulting in the 2004 release of their powerful full-length debut, The Silence in Black and White. While the bandmates relentlessly toured behind it, the album became Victory’s highest-selling debut, and its lead single, “Ohio Is for Lovers,” slowly invaded rock radio. Hawthorne Heights’ second album, If Only You Were Lonely, arrived in 2006 along with a DVD titled This Is Who We Are. Leading up to the album’s release, Victory urged the band’s street team members to help it chart above R&B singer Ne-Yo, whose own album was slated to be released the same day. Questionable promotional tactics included rearranging store displays to hide Ne-Yo’s record and make Hawthorne Heights’ more prominent. Lonely debuted at number three on the charts, though more than a few eyebrows were raised in the band and label’s direction. Regardless, the album continued to sell well, eventually going gold. However, controversy came to a head in early August when Hawthorne Heights suddenly announced that they were leaving Victory Records (a move that violated a contractual obligation calling for two more albums) and suing the company over various issues, including unpaid royalties and tarnishing their name over the aforementioned incident (the band claimed to have no knowledge of the infamous street team letter). In a statement issued online, the bandmembers compared their time at the label to being in an “abusive relationship” and directly attacked “greed driven” label head Tony Brummel. As issues were sorted out behind the scenes (and Victory countersued the band, claiming they just wanted to jump to a major’s roster), Hawthorne Heights continued touring nationwide and served as a headlining act on the fall 2006 version of the popular Nintendo Fusion Tour. Following several court dates with their label, Hawthorne Heights returned to the road in late 2007. However, guitarist Casey Calvert died in his sleep just several hours into the tour, the victim of a lethal combination of antidepressant medications and Vicodin (Calvert had reportedly undergone a root canal prior to the band’s departure, hence his need for painkillers). Soldiering on as a quartet, the bandmates resolved their issues with Victory Records and issued a third album, Fragile Future, in August
2008. Rather than replace Calvert, the band decided to have guitarist Micah Carli fill in on vocals. In 2010, Hawthorne Heights finally did switch labels by having Wind-Up Records issue Skeletons, their fourth album. Meanwhile, Victory wrapped up its contract with the band by releasing Midwesterners: The Hits, which featured material from their first three albums. The band split from Wind-Up in 2010 and formed their own label, Cardboard Empire. Along with touring, they began work on a series of EPs, beginning with Hate in the summer of 2011 and then Hope in late 2012. The following year Hawthorne Heights showed their ambitions with Zero, a posthardcore concept album about a group of rebels in a dystopian, nearfuture America. March 2018 saw the release of the single “Pink Hearts” ahead of the arrival of the full-length Bad Frequencies, which dropped later that April via Pure Noise.

MUSIC NEWS Freddie Pate Performs at Katie’s Bar in Bailiff
The Leslie Doaks Band Perform at Loaded Barrels.
Tonight at Katie’s Bar in Bacliff was sure a lot of fun. Performing here this night was Freddie Pate. Freddie has been around for quite a while now. For many years, Freddie was a member of Wayne Toups and Zydecajun. He played on several album projects and toured with them as well. Before that he could be found playing with some of the best musicians in town in just about every honky tonk in town. Including Gilley’s, the Western Club, The Western Swing, Dancetown and many more. Opening for some great acts, Ronnie Misap, Willie Nelson, Johnny Rodriguez, Eddie Rabbit, Alabama, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, David Alan Coe, George Jones, Conway Twitty, Ray Price and countless others. He’s really had quite a distinguished career, so when we get a chance to see a pro like this perform, it’s really a treat. Tonight’s show at Katie’s Bar was just that, a treat. Tonight Freddie was at the top of his game and the licks just got tastier and tastier as he performed some great blues tunes for the audience there. Applause and screams followed every song, and the audience just loved every minute of his performances, as well as us. I can’t wait to see him again. You really need to put Katie’s Bar and Freddie Pate on your list and the next time he performs there, go out and see him for yourself. I’m sure you’ll be amazed. In the meantime, you can check out the two videos we have from his show beforehand on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television at http:// www.houstonmusicnews.net or google Freddie Pate Performs at Katie’s Bar. Tonight we were in the mood for some Country Music, so when we heard that Leslie Doaks was performing at Loaded Barrels on FM 1960, we headed over there to fill our Country appetite. Leslie and the guys were doning a really great job performing one fine Country hit after another, including songs like George Strait’s “Amarillo By Morning” and Eddie Rabbit’s “Driving My Life Away,” but the hit of the evening for us was when they broke into a little Southern Rock with Lynyrrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama.” This band really know how to deliver the goods when it come to Country Music. Check them out sometime, and be sure to drop by Loaded Barrels. They bring in great bands every month performing Rock, Country, Blues, and a little of everything.

Bobaflex Returns To The BFE Rock Club On August 16 Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy along with Mighty Fish Entertainment are happy to announce the return of Recording Artist, Bobaflex, to the BFE Rock Club on Friday, August 16th. Bobaflex will be bringing their “Coast To Coast ’19” Tour to Houston and it will be hosted at the BFE by none other than Houston’s Own Kevin Hamlin. Can I get a “Hell Yeah” from you!! Last time Bobaflex came to the BFE they also brought a packed house of Bobaflex fans, not to mention gathering a lot of new fans while they were there. For this show also, Bobaflex will be bringing one of the best casts of support artists you’ve seen in a long while. Sharing the stage with Bobaflex will be Artifas, Engineered Society Project, Lavens Fate, The Unled, and Creepwater Revelation. As you can see, this will definitely be a night to remember. And believe me, this night will be a night to remember. Word has it that this will be the last tour for Bobaflex, the big

goodbye. After being together for so long, the band is looking to go their separate ways. I know, I know, this isn’t the news you wanted to hear. We here at Music News are a bit distraught to hear about it. We’ve got all the Bobaflex albums and the though of ending our Bobaflex collection there is a bit discerning. Shaun McCoy of Bobaflex had this to say: The hardest pill to swallow about the band breaking up is that our last album may never be finished. Maybe we can do a commemorative ep next year for the fans. A DELICIOUS FEAST is a record that must be finished! Marty McCoy tells us that “Tommy, Jymmy, Jake and I are gonna gonna finish the remainder of the summer and fall tours as a four piece version of Bobaflex. It doesn’t feel right to continue as Bobaflex without Shaun. After the September tour Bobaflex is officially disbanding. We are sad to close this chapter of our lives, but
excited to start a new one. The four of us are working on new music under a new name. You, the fans have been incredible and we hope you continue to support us in this new endeavor.” Shaun McCoy added by saying, “It hurts me deeply to say these words, but my time with Bobaflex is coming to an end. For years, I’ve tried to juggle being a dad and touring. I just can’t do it anymore. The band has been wonderful, every member since the old days, and they will always be
my brothers. The fans have been loving and supportive since the first record. I love you all and will miss you chanting back our lyrics the most.” For the less initiated, this is Bobaflex: West Virginia hard rock band Bobaflex combine classic rock & roll and nu-metal influences on a hard-charging sound that evolved after their debut. The band was formed by brothers Shawn “Beaver” McCoy and Marty McCoy, direct descendants of the McCoy family from the famous Hatfield-and-McCoy feud of the 19th century. Shawn, on lead guitar, and Marty, on bass guitar, were joined by drummer Ronnie Castro and co-lead singers Lutz and Drebbit, and the quintet made their debut on June 5, 1998, in Huntington, West Virginia, playing rock in a rap-influenced nu-metal style. They built up a following in the tri-state area of West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky, and self-released their debut album, Bobaflex, in August 1999. Later, at a gig, they met Shifty Shellshock, lead singer of Crazy Town, who helped them get a production deal and got them into discussions with Columbia Records for a record contract. In 2001, Michael Steele joined on guitar. The Columbia deal fell through when the band split over musical differences, with Lutz and Drebbit departing, while Shawn, Marty, Castro, and Steele, retaining the band name, opted for a more mainstream rock sound. Marty switched to guitar, and Shawn and Marty took over vocal duties, adding bass player Jerod Mankin. This quintet made the five-song EP Primitive Epic, which the band released in May 2002. That recording attracted the interest of independent metal label Eclipse, which signed Bobaflex in March 2003. Meanwhile, Castro left the band and was replaced by drummer Thomas Johnson. Bobaflex recorded new songs and remixed existing ones to expand Primitive Epic into their Eclipse debut, and the new full-length version of the recording was released in August 2003. Bobaflex went on to TVT Records, where they released two albums, 2003’s Apologize for Nothing and 2007’s Tales from Dirt Town, before leaving the label (which had filed for bankruptcy) in 2009. An EP, Chemical Valley, was issued on their own independent label BFX in 2010. They followed with 2011’s Hell in My Heart, home to their single “Bury Me with My Guns On,” and 2013’s Charlatan’s Web, which featured “I’m Glad You’re Dead.” Two years later, they released Anything That Moves. In 2017, they issued their eighth effort, Eloquent Demons. Yes, it will be a bittersweet farewell, but someday the band formerly known as Bobaflex will be back, but under a new name. In the meantime, don’t let this all get you down. Come and wish them a fond farewell and help celebrate what they have been about this month at The BFE Rock Club on Friday, August 16th.

We’re back at The Big Easy again, this time to see Jim Suhler from Dallas. Jim is another one of the best bluesmen that we’ve ever seen. His shows are just a ton of fun. Together, they’ve been terrorizing clubs, theaters and festivals alike with their flamethrower brand of blues/rock. with a major side order of the Texas border mythology added to keep it spicy. It all starts with Sunday brunch and an acoustic jam 11am-3pm, then Tuesday night a musician’s jam hosted by Howard & the Nosebleeds, with an open mic after their set. Wednesday nights have the band Potroast, Hellina Bucket, and the midnight drum circle. This month at Last Concert, see Grady Spencer & The Work with Little Outfit (Texas Country) Fri. Aug. 9th. Panic Stricken, a Widepread Panic tribute is Sat. Aug. 17th. Brown Sabbath is Thurs. Aug. 22nd. Make plans to come to Last Concert Cafe this month!
Holland K. Smith Performs at The Big Easy We’re at The Big Easy tonight for a great evening of Blues and entertainment. Tonight on stage is Bluesman Holland K. Smith. Holland K Smith is a guitarist, songwriter and singer of Texas-style blues. The Holland K. Smith Blues Band was formed in 1994. Holland and the guys have been performing at The Big Easy for many years now and is quite a draw. He’s really won over a great following here in Houston. Holland cites his influences as Wynonie Harris, Bobby Bland, Chet Atkins, Pee Wee Crayton, G.E. Smith, Freddie King, Billy Gibbons, TBone Walker, B.B. King and Albert Collins. When you hear him perform, he truly has his own style. Tonight’s performance was fantastic. He even tried out a new tune he’s been working on and it sounded great. But don’t take our word for it, check out the videos we have from this night’s performance at HMNTV - Houston Music News Television at http://www.houstonmusicnews.net. I think you’ll agree with us. This guy is a blues star. Don’t waste any time, just google: Holland K. Smith Performs at The Big Easy.

Temple of Angles Perform at Rudyard’s Temple of Angels is a Gothic/Post Punk band from Austin, Texas. They were on tour and performing at Rudyard’s in support of their new album, “Cerise Dream/Breathless. The crowd there was really psyched out on this band as they crowded the stage and even sang along with the songs. It was really surprising how many fans of theirs showed up to support them. Really quite impressive and the band also did a fine job pleasing them. The people there just wanted more and more from them. I’m surprised they even let them leave the stage. Wow, what a great time!

The Smashing Pumpkins Return To Houston Smashing Pumpkins and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds will tour North America together this summer. The tour will hit Houston’s Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on August 25th. The 90’s alt-rock pioneers have mapped out a 16-date tour taking place in August. Kicking off in Camden, New Jersey on August 8th, the itinerary also includes stops in Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, and Dallas, and beyond before concluding with dates in Los Angeles and Mountain View, California. P u n k rock veterans AFI will serve as support for the entirety of the tour. Smashing Pumpkins founding members Billy Corgan, James Iha, and Jimmy Chamberlin reunited last year and embarked on their first tour together in over 20 years. They also released a new album, Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1, and have plans to follow it up in short order. Gallagher released his third album with the High Flying Birds, Who Built the Moon?, in November 2017. According to a press release, the band is currently in the
studio working on new music. When alternative rock took over the world, the airwaves, and MTV during the 1990s, few bands garnered more press or sold more records than the Smashing Pumpkins — you’d almost think they were from Seattle! But, no, the Smashing Pumpkins hailed from Chicago, Illinois, where bandleader, vocalist and guitarist Billy Corgan began working with fellow guitarist James Iha in 1988, then recruited bassist D ’ a r c y Wretzky and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain to complete the lineup. Over the next two years, the quartet cut several demos while performing local shows, prior to landing a deal with Caroline Records and recording their debut album, Gish, in 1991 with Steve Albini producing. A relative success, the album established the band’s unique blueprint, combining college rock, psychedelia, dream pop and heavy metal, just in time to join the alternative rock revolution spearheaded by Nirvana the following year. Like many of the independent bands now associated with grunge, in one
way or another, the Smashing Pumpkins duly graduated to a major label (Virgin) and were catapulted into the mainstream by 1993’s Siamese Dream. The group then reached absolute ubiquity via 1995’s gargantuan, two-CD magnum opus, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, only to deal with tragedy when tour keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin suffered a fatal heroin overdose in July of 1996. Drummer Chamberlain was also busted for drug possession and replaced by committee on the band’s 1997 follow-up, Adore — a detour into electronica that alienated many fans, especially after Corgan blamed them for “not getting it.” 2000’s Machina/The Machines of God, fared somewhat better, but the Smashing Pumpkins (now reunited with

Chamberlain) were, by all appearances, past their commercial prime, along with ‘90s altrock, so Corgan decided to break up the band to work with Zwan between 2001 and 2003. Corgan would inevitably backpedal and record once again under the Pumpkins banner, via 2007’s Zeitgeist, then initiate a socalled “ongoing studio album” with 2009’s Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, followed in 2012 by the more traditionally self-contained Oceania and 2014’s Monuments to an Elegy. So, however unlikely it may be that the Smashing Pumpkins will once again enjoy their world-conquering success of yester year, one should never count out the prolific Billy Corgan.

Joel’s Garage Band Perform at The 19th Hole Hey look, It’s Joel’s Garage Band performing at The 19th Hole, up in The Woodlands. Here’s a great new cover band that we ran into this night. This cool six piece outfit was really cranking out the “Classic Rock” tunes to the max, and they really sounded good. They performed songs from The Doors (“Roadhouse Blues”), The Clash (“Should I Stay Or Should I Go”), Lynyrd Skynyrd (“Sweet Home Alabama”), The Spencer Davis Group (“Gimme Some Lovin’”), and even Robert Johnson (“Sweet Home Chicago”). They were really a lot of fun. With six performers you get a lot of variety and it really was refreshing. Here’s another great find that you need to check out sometime. We’ve got two videos from this show to share with you right now on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television at houstonmusicnewstelevision1 on youtube. Here they are performing “Sweet Home Alabama”.

Paul Ramirez Band Performs at Cruiser’s Ice House
Tonight we dropped by Cruiser’s Ice House in Santa Fe to visit with our old friend, Paul Ramirez, and listen to his great band. Paul has always been one of our favorite musicians. He has one of the tastiest guitar sounds around and years of talent to bring it to a fine edge. Tonight it was just what we expected... a lot of great music. From Steely Dan to Santana, Paul kept the tunes a comin’. His rendition of “Oye Como Va” by Santana was fantastic. Besides headlining his own shows, Paul has also opened for The Allman Brothers, Widespread Panic, Marshall Tucker Band, Blue Oyster Cult, Dick Dale, Ian Moore, Chris Duarte, Papa Grows Funk, Monte Montgomery, George Porter Jr., Los Lonely Boys, Los Lobos, and Ray Wylie Hubbard. Let me tell you, this guy has been around. His show tonight at Cruiser’s was a veritable ‘tour de force’. The show tonight was fine and a lot of fun. Can’t wait to see him again. For those of you who haven’t seen Paul before, check out the videos we shot at this show. You can check them out at HMNTV - Houston Music News Television at http://www.houstonmusicnews.net.

Cruiser’s Ice House Vollie Ray’s Circus Vollie Ray’s Circus is never short on entertainment! It all starts Sunday with old Brothers Acoustic, then Monday Ghetto Dog. Tuesday and Wednesday open mic night for singer/songwriters, then Thursday is Premium Blend & Friends, and live music on the weekends! Tres Leches? and Corey-Hole, plus Joey Keenan will be performing there on Fri. Aug.
Cruiser’s Ice House is the “best little icehouse in Texas”, or more precisely, Santa Fe. This local biker bar NEVER has a cover for live bands they have playing there, like On August 3rd you can see Paul Ramirez. The Feel will play on Sat. Aug. 10th, Heart Stoppers will hit the stage on Sat. Aug. 17th, and Starr Jernigan Sat. Aug. 24th. Also, they’ve got their regular feature of free pool Mondays, and their Sunday Blues Jam hosted by Ben
It was time for a little more Country Music, so we headed over to Vollie Ray’s Circus to check out Walker County Line and see what they were up to. Well they’re up to some fine Country Music and performed some cool old Country standards for us, like Keith Whitley’s “Don’t Close Your Eyes,” “George Strait’s “Amarillo By Morning,” and even threw in some Tom Petty for us. It was pretty good set. We enjoyed ourselves. Be sure to drop by Vollie Ray’s Circus. You never know who might be performing there. Check out their ad in this issue for some cool suggestions.
Freezerburn Perform at the Nose Dive Bar We dropped by The Nose Dive Bar to check out the music on their back patio this night. On stage was the band Freezerburn. This cool band was performing what I would interpret as a “Free Improvised Jam” and they were doing a damn good job at it. It was pretty cool. The Nose Dive is a great little bar that just opened up on Greens Road and features ‘Live Music’ every Saturday Night. Check out their ad in this issue to see who’s going to be there this month. We’re sure you’ll be finding someone performing there you’ll want to se.
Herrington (since 1998!) is from 4pm-8pm. So hop on your bike and cruise into Cruiser’s today! continued on next page

Hank Von Hell Performs at White Oak Music Hall Hank Von Hell will be performing this month at White Oak Music Hall on August 28th. Legendary rock frontman and longtime Turbonegro vocalist HANK VON HELL has announced his return to North America for this summer! In addition to Von Hell, the band features Jones Kelly II (lead guitar), Major Sam (rhythm guitar), Jean Genus (bass) and Dead Said Fred (drums). Presented by MetalSucks and Tone Deaf Touring, the Hank Von Hell 2019 North American tour will rock with hellacious force; reaffirming the singer’s standing as the King of “Death Punk” while introducing first time fans to one of hard rock’s most voracious vocalists and biggest bad boys. The tour will launch on August 6th in Atlanta, GA and runs through September 12th in Greenville, SC. You’ll find a complete list of dates below. Support on the first half of the tour will come from Spiders, with the second half drawing support from Overdose. “It’s been a long, long time since I’ve toured North America” says Hank Von Hell. “But now, the wait is finally over. I’m beyond excited to once again hit the stage in front of some of the best audiences in the world, and I can guarantee that the fans wont be disappointed. This tour is maxed out to the fullest, with a setlist that’ll make your heads fuckin’ pop. I’ll bring the thunder, you’ll bring the riot. Let’s party – Hank is BACK.” Hank Von Hell, who for 17 years fronted Turbonegro, the self-styled “biggest underground rock ‘n’ roll band in the world”,
is known for his raucous ring-leading, overthe-top personality and gaudy stage makeup that turns every concert into a party. Touring in support of his new LP, ‘Egomania’, Von Hell is set to prove, once again, that his formidable reputation proceeds him for a reason. His highly successful comeback album “Egomania” was released last year, with the title track “Bum to Bum” featuring non other than Steve-O from Jackass fame in the video and resurrecting Hank from the dead and back to rock. Watch the video HERE. The follow-up album to “Egomania” is due to be released in the very near future through Sony Music Entertainment. Hans Erik Dyvik Husby, also known as Hank von Hell, is most famous for being the former lead vocalist of the Norwegian death-punk band Turbonegro. Husby’s former band is most well known for their tongue-in-cheek humor dealing with homosexual aesthetics and punk rock antics, and the formation of a genre they label “death punk”. The band formed in the late 1980s and put out a few records before disbanding in 1998 when Husby’s heroin addiction made him unable to perform. After going through rehab, Turbonegro reunited in 2002, but Husby and the band “laid it on ice” in 2010. The main reason for this was his new lifestyle as a sober family man. Husby went through detox while living at the Moskenes island in Lofoten, Norway. Here he worked at Norsk Fiskeværs museum in Å, as well as working as a pre-
senter at Moskenesradioen, a local radio station. In 2009, he had a joint #1 hit alongside Maria Solheim in the Norwegian Singles Chart with “Rom for alle”. The song stayed at #1 for three weeks including the Christmas chart for 2009. He claims to have now dealt with his drug addiction problem thanks to the Scientology drug rehab program Narconon. He played the title role in Cornelis, a Swedish film from 2010 about the singersongwriter Cornelis Vreeswijk. On 6 June 2011, Hank, alongside his new band Doctor Midnight & The Mercy Cult, released their first album I Declare: Treason. Fall 2011 he was a judge in Norwegian Idol. His biography was released in Norway October 2012, written by famous writer and poet Havard Rem, where he speaks openly about his life so far. On 31 August 2018 Hank Von Hell released his first single Bum to Bum from his forthcoming solo record entitled Ego-
mania. The album was released on November 2 through Sony Music Entertainment/ Century Media Records worldwide. On 25 January 2019 the song Fake it was chosen for competition in the Melodi Grand Prix 2019 to represent Norway at the Eurovision Song Contest in Israel. Debut Solo Album - Egomania On 2 November 2018, Hank Von Hell released his first debut solo record, Egomania. Hank Von Hell wrote the album with the help of guitarist and band member Eric Bachman, also known as Cat Casino. Cat is also a member of Vain and Deathstars. Hank Von Hell was asked why he decided to return and produce a solo record in an interview in 2018, he said: “The timing was just right. I was done with others “angels” in life, and it felt like it was time to go back and do what I always should’ve done – ROCK. And shake ass.”.

native Texan. But we’ll claim him. zachtate.com

Zach Tate Band “Angels & Outlaws” Canadian-native-turned-Texas-troubadour Zach Tate has developed into one of the Gulf Coast region’s most productive artists. “Angels & Outlaws” is Tate’s sixth CD release. And while his passion and smooth, genuine vocal delivery have been ever present, it’s the evolution of his songwriting and storytelling prowess that are the most impressive elements of this thirteen song effort. Zach Tate is a first-rate songwriter, and his country and Americana-flavored
compositions have never been better than they are here. This is a remarkably consistent offering, sometimes heavy, at times reflective, often hopeful, but always thought provoking. The album’s opener, the moody, 6-minute “Outlaw”, is an epic Southern rock-infused ballad. It’s a frank commentary on the 2015 clash between rival motorcycle clubs and local police in Waco, and it also serves as the album’s first video single. It’s an outstanding song, to be sure. But it was also a risky opening number, as it is a tough act to follow. However, Tate and the band (Lynn Raggio-lead guitar, Gary Graham-keyboards, Drew Schuesslerbass, and Jody Smith-drums) are more than up to the task. “Angels & Outlaws” contains 11 Tate originals, and for the first time in his recording career, he has elected to include a pair of intriguing cover tunes. He delivers colorful versions of Timbuk 3’s “Reverend Jack And His Roaming Cadillac Church”, as well as “Fiddler’s Green” by The Tragically Hip. The end result of this outside-the-box collection of songs is an exceptional experience for the listener. Recorded at Wire Road Studios in Houston, engineered by Andy Bradley, and produced by the band themselves, “Angel & Outlaws” is another jewel in the crown of Zach Tate. He may not be a
Rich Layton & Tough Town “Salvation Road” “Salvation Road” is the outstanding new eleven song offering from singer/ songwriter Rich Layton and his backing band Tough Town. This collection of 10 original cuts and 1 cover selection (a surprisingly inspired version of The Monkees’ “Take A Giant Step”) is thoroughly solid and enjoyable. There’s not a filler song in the lot, and there’s more than one radio-ready track here. Layton and the band (Larry McCoy-guitar, Eric “Haus” Krabbenhoft-bass, and Charles Pike-drums) fit neatly into the blues/rock category, particularly on those songs that are seasoned with Layton’s tasteful harmonica work. But there are also hints of rockabilly and Americana influences that give this album strong crossover appeal. The up-tempo opener “Live To Rock” serves as something of a vision statement for Layton, and the swamp blues vibe of the title track is equally effective. The moody “Raise It Up” is perhaps the standout of the bunch, and the 60’s groove of “Wake Up Call” is both infectious and soothing. Other highlights include “Show Me What You’re Working With”, which features a rousing guest vocal performance by Teresa James, and “Sorry Don’t Cut It”, which is a timely commentary on the political and pop culture drama that is all too prevalent these days. And as the title suggests, “The Dude Abides” is a bit of a love letter the the fans of The Big Lebowski (which I’ll assume counts Layton among their ranks). There are several other guest musicians who lend their talents to “Salvation Road”, most notably producer Terry Wilson, who contributes in multipleareas. But this album is without question a product of the vision of Rich Layton. And it’s one you don’t want to miss. richlayton.us
Crank Case “Run You Down” They say you can’t judge a book by its cover. But...sometimes you can. First things first: kudos to Crank Case on one of the cooler CD covers you’re ever gonna see. And “Run You Down” sounds exactly how you would expect an album with this cover to sound. Sometimes, what you see is what you get. But enough with the cliches. Crank Case is about guitars. And drums. And more guitars. Crank Case is about attitude and energy and heavy groove. They don’t believe in layers of studio gloss, love songs, or deep reflective lyrics with double meaning. And subtlety isn’t their thing, either. They are a straight forward, no-nonsense Texas rock band. And they’re definitely hitting on all cylinders here. “Run You Down” is chock full of killer riffs (“Gasoline”, “The Offer”, “Whatchu Got”) driving beats (“Rock And Roll Genie”, “Gift”, “Rat Rod Man”, “One Night-2019”) and even the occasional tasty harmony vocal (“I’m Crazy Too”). The band’s musical approach can best be described as tasteful heaviness. Think hard rock/heavy metal with just a hint of alternative, played with a Ramones-like vibe, and you get the idea. And this is not garage band stuff, either. Crank Case is comprised of high level players whose devotion to their cause is evident in their performance. Combine solid material with talented musicians, as well as a top shelf production job (produced by Greg Loyacano and the band), and the result is one of the strongest hard rock releases from a Texas act in 2019. crank-case.com
