MUSIC NEWS Cher will be bringing her Here We Go Again Tour to Houston this month at Toyota Center on December 15th. The Here We Go Again Tour is in support of the multiplatinum seller’s latest studio album “Dancing Queen”, which was released Sept. 28 of last year. Dancing Queen includes 10 tracks and features the singles “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme (A Man After Midnight),” “SOS” and “One of Us.” Opening the show for Cher will be Nile Rodgers and Chic. Cher’s appearance in Houston follows her European tour which took her to 17 cities in the U.K. and Europe. This is Cher’s first tour in five years. This tour follows the recent global success and rave reviews for Cher’s role in the Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again. This is the first time tshe has gone on a world tour since her Living Proof: The Farewell Tour (2002–2005). So far, the tour has been pretty consistanly the same. The show starts with a video montage featuring many moments of Cher’s career. After the intro ends, Cher appears wearing a Viking costume and a neon-orange wig, while standing on a flying platform and performing “Woman’s World”. The song is followed by “Strong Enough” and a 15-minute long on stage monologue where she infamously asks the crowd “what’s your granny doing tonight?” She leaves for a costume change, while the “Gayatri Mantra” is played. She returns on a mechanical elephant and performs “All or Nothing”. Cher’s show is filled with brilliant costume changes as well as tributes to both her former husband, Sonny Bono, and fun-filled performances of Abba songs to celebrate her performance in “Mamma Mia
2: Here We Go Again. And, of course, Cher will be joined by several dancers on stage as well. Other song’s she has been performing on stage include “The Beat Goes On,” “I Got You Babe,” “Welcome To Burlesque,” the Abba standards: “Waterloo,” “SOS,” “Fernando,” “After All,” “Walking In Memphis,” “The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s In His Kiss), Michael Bolton’s “I Found Someone,” “If I Could turn Back Time,” and and encore of “Believe.” However, her set list may vary in her Houston show, but this should give you an idea of what to expect anyway.

The tour has received mostly positive reception from critics, praising Cher’s vocals as well as the elements of the show and the costume changes. Cher has had three careers that place her indelibly in the public consciousness, and two have been in association with her then-husband, composer/producer/singer Salvatore “Sonny” Bono (b. February 16, 1935, d. January 8, 1998). She charted major hit records in the 1960s and 1970s, working in idioms ranging from early-’60s girl group-style ballads to Jackie Deshannon folk-influenced pop to adult contemporary pop in the manner of later Dusty Springfield. She also embarked on an acting career, initially in the late ’60s in association with her work as part of Sonny & Cher but later on her own, which led to a series of increasingly polished and compelling performances in Silkwood, Mask, and Moonstruck, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves,” a conscious attempt to emulate Springfield’s “Son of a Preacher Man” (which also recalled Cher’s own “Bang Bang”) was released late in 1971 and became a number one hit and a million-seller. To some listeners, “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves” was the epitome of schlocky pop/rock, but the song’s subject matter, unusual tempo changes, and an incredibly memorable chorus-hook became a vehicle for a transcendent performance by the singer, marking Cher’s maturation as an artist. A follow-up album, featuring her covers of contemporary hits such as “Fire and Rain,” sold well also, and her next single, “The Way of Love,” a revival of a mid-’60s Kathy Kirby hit, solidified the image of a new, more confident and power-
ful Cher. And the debut of the couple’s regular network variety series on CBS in January 1972 brought them back to the center of American and international popular culture in a more mature, wittier guise, and one that concentrated much more on Cher as a personality. In 1974, it was revealed that the couple’s marriage was coming to an end. Ironically, Cher came out of this split more secure than her husband, despite his having guided her career for a decade and having all of the real training in the entertainment business. She embarked on an acting career, even as she continued to make headlines for her romantic exploits, including an affair with (and two marriages to) Gregg Allman. She became a far better actress than she was a singer, first revealed in Mike Nichols’ Silkwood (1983) and then in Peter Bogdanovich’s Mask (1985) and George Miller’s The Witches of Eastwick (1987). Her acting peers caught on to the worth of her work in time for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Norman Jewison’s 1987 romantic comedy Moonstruck. Living Proof Since the mid-’70s, Cher has been known more for her acting than for her music, although she has continued to record for numerous labels, including Columbia, and in 1998 scored an international chart-topping smash with the clubfriendly single “Believe.” The year 2001 brought Living Proof, the equally danceoriented follow-up to the transformative Believe, and by 2005 she had completed the three-year, high-grossing Farewell Tour ahead of a lucrative Las Vegas residency of equal length. In 2010 she starred in the musical Burlesque, and “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” from the movie’s soundtrack went on to win a Golden Globe Award. In September 2013 Cher released a new studio set, Closer to the Truth, the results of further sessions with assistance from Mark Taylor, the British songwriter/producer who had been a regular collaborator since Believe. Cher’s appearance in the 2018 musical film Mama Mia! Here We Go Again inspired her to record an album of ABBA cover songs called Dancing Queen in September of that year.

Zebra Perform At Warehouse Live Louisiana Rockers, Zebra, will be returning to Houston this month for a special concert at Warehouse Live on December 27th. American hard rock unit Zebra formed in New Orleans in the mid-1970s. The trio concocted their moniker from a Vogue magazine cover and soon won over the East Coast with expert Zep-like pompmetal. Zebra’s confident self-titled debut went gold, thanks to the air play of excellent singles “Tell Me What You Want” and “Who’s Behind the Door.” Vet producer Jack Douglas (Aerosmith, Cheap Trick) also helmed the follow-up, No Tellin’ Lies. Not as strong or cohesive as the first effort, Lies still managed to crack the Billboard Top 100. The esoteric 3.V took a pop approach, but received little in the way of promotion. Always a strong presence on-stage, Zebra released a live recording in 1990 with two great unreleased gems. Vocalist/guitarist Randy Jackson, a redoubtable talent, then formed China Rain, but like Zebra, the outfit inevitably succumbed to the burgeoning alternative rock/grunge avalanche. After a significant hiatus, the band reconvened in 1997 and began playing shows, eventually releasing their aptly-named fourth LP, IV, in 2003. Zebra is a hard rock band founded in 1975 in New Orleans, Louisiana. It features Randy Jackson (guitar and vocals), Felix Hanemann (bass, keyboards and vocals) and Guy Gelso (drums and vocals). In the early 1970s, Jackson and Hanemann played together in a group called Shepherd’s Bush, but in 1974 left Shepherd’s Bush and founded a new band with Gelso on drums. The group initially was a cover band, playing Led Zeppelin and other technically proficient rock groups such as Yes, Jethro Tull, and Pink Floyd. In 1975, the group adopted the name Zebra after seeing a cover of the magazine Vogue featuring a woman riding a zebra. Initially based in New Orleans, they increasingly played more often on Long Island, and eventually all three members moved there to pursue success. They had introduced their original material into their cover sets years before they were signed to Atlantic Records, including “The La La Song,” “Free” and “Bears” (originally entitled “The Bears are Hibernating”). Zebra had been noticed by local colleges and even had some of their early original performances recorded by Long Island FM radio station WBAB, culminating in the inclusion of one of their songs on a release of “WBAB Homegrown Album”, which commemorated local acts and performances culled from the station’s on-air “Homegrown Hour” program. Zebra’s mainstream debut on Atlantic Records was in 1983 with their eponymous album, produced by Jack Douglas and featuring the singles “Tell Me What You Want” and “Who’s Behind The Door?” The band continued to tour throughout the 1980s, but took a temporary break in the early 1990s after being dropped by Atlantic Records. Randy Jackson formed his solo band Randy Jackson’s China Rain, and released its only album in the year 1991. Zebra finally reunited in 1994 and released Zebra IV in 2003, their first album of allnew material since 1986. A DVD of live performances, mostly from a show at the House of Blues in New Orleans, was released in the summer of 2007. On July 10, 2010, during their 35thanniversary performance at New Orleans’ Mahalia Jackson Theater, Zebra was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall of
Fame. On October 8, 2012, Zebra was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. In March 2013, Zebra performed on Cruise to the Edge, a concert cruise featuring notable progressive rock bands including Yes, Steve Hackett, U.K., Carl Palmer Band, Ambrosia, Saga, Nektar, Glass Hammer, and IOEarth. Although Zebra has not released any studio material since 2003’s Zebra IV, the band continues to perform live, mostly in the Gulf Coast and East Coast of the United States, including New Orleans and New York City.In February 2017, Jackson reported that the band is working on a new album. He told the Shreveport Times, “I have new material and hopefully we’ll get to work on a new record in the next couple of months.”[

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra Presents The All New “Christmas Eve and Other Stories’ at Toyota Center The Trans-Siberian Orchestra is hitting the road with the All New “Christmas Eve and Other Stories’ Tour with shows across the U.S. and they will be rockin’ Houston’s Toyota Center on Sunday, December 22 with two shows at 3:00PM and at 8:00PM. This year’s outing is TSO’s third tour without founder Paul O’Neil, who died in 2017. “It’s hard to believe that 20 years ago, we had just seven shows,” Al Pitrelli, TSO’s music director and lead guitarist, told USA TODAY. “We were so happy that 10 to 11 thousand people came out to those shows and fell in love with Paul’s creation. Last year, with Paul’s family steering the ship, we realized that his dream will live beyond him, and that makes us all very proud, happy and thankful.” “There are a lot of people who come back year after year, and they expect to see the stories they’ve grown so attached to, and, not to disappoint them, we keep the familiarity intact,” Pitrelli said. “But, those same people in the audience know that there are always going to be a lot of surprises. This year is no different. ... We as a band and production are forever pushing the envelope both musically and visually, (and) this tour is going to be epic.” When Paul O’Neill first conceived Trans-Siberian Orchestra, his goal was as straightforward as it was incredibly ambitious. “The whole idea,” the late Paul O’Neill explained, “was to create a progressive rock band that would push the boundaries (of the genre) further than any group before... Way, way further.” With more than 10 million albums sold, TSO has inspired generations of fans Page 6 - Music News December 2019
to rediscover the multi-dimensional art form of the rock opera. Meanwhile, on the road, they have become one of the world’s top acts, with Billboard magazine naming TSO as one of the top touring artists of the past decade — a $20 million-plus production that has played to over 100 million people in 80+ cities, selling more than $280 million worth of tickets and presenting $11 million to charity. O’Neill, a New York City native grew up, “with a wide-ranging world of (rock) musical influences.” But, O’Neill also soaked up sources such as Broadway musicals, Motown and singer-songwriters such as Jim Croce and Harry Chapin, while authors such as Oscar Wilde and Robert Graves fueled his literary tastes. He began his career playing guitar for touring productions of Jesus Christ Superstar and Hair, then went to work in the late ’70s for LeberKrebs Inc., the Manhattan management company whose clients included Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, AC/DC, Def Leppard, the Scorpions, the New York Dolls, and scores of others. In the ’80s, O’Neill became a major concert promoter in Japan as well, but returned to the States to start writing and producing full-time. O’Neill helmed Aerosmith’s Classics Live I and Classics Live II albums before beginning a fortuitous relationship with the band Savatage that led to conceptual pieces such as Hall Of The Mountain King, Gutter Ballet, Streets: A Rock Opera and Dead Winter Dead. Producing introduced O’Neill to Jon Oliva, Bob Kinkel and Al Pitrelli, as well as reconnecting him with legendary studio engineer Dave Wittman, who all became key original collaborators in O’Neill’s grand vision - Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
“I wanted to take the very best of all the forms of music I grew up on and merge them into a new style,” O’Neill says. “Basically I was building on the work of everybody I worshipped: the rock opera parts from bands like the Who; the marriage of classical and rock from bands like Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Queen; the over-the-top light show from bands like Pink Floyd... I always wanted to do a full rock opera with a full progressive band and at least 18 lead singers.” O’Neill took the idea to Atlantic Records which, to his surprise, went for it and financed the creation of Romanov, which was initially to be TSO’s first release. “We were very fortunate,” he says. “It was one of the only labels left that still did an ‘old school’ kind of artist development. My original concept was that we were going to do six rock operas, a trilogy about Christmas and maybe one or two regular albums.” However, when Romanov got temporarily put on the back burner, the first installment of the Christmas trilogy, Christmas Eve and Other Stories became TSO’s debut album. Fueled by the socially conscious single “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/ 24,” the album was certified double platinum. More platinum certifications followed with 1998’s The Christmas Attic, and the final installment of the Christmas trilogy, The Lost Christmas Eve in 2004. In the midst of completing the trilogy, TSO released their first non-holiday rock opera, the gold certified Beethoven’s Last Night. But TSO really cemented its following in concert. The group hit the road in 1999, beginning an annual November-December extravaganza that O’Neill takes pride in being, “as over the top as we can
make it. We have, two stages —with pyro, light and lasers— on both sides of the arena, as well as in the crowd and the best sound we can find... There’s no second-class seats at a Trans-Siberian Orchestra show. I want people to walk out of our shows speechless and still not believing what they have seen was possible.” “I’ve always believed that music has the power to transport and transform,” O’Neill explained. “The original concept of Trans-Siberian Orchestra was how to make music have the most emotional impact. We always try to write melodies that are so infectious they don’t need lyrics and lyrics so poetic that they don’t need a melody, but when you combine the two together they create an alloy where the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. Once those songs are woven together into a tapestry they create a story which gives each song a third dimension.” “That was so much in the spirit of Trans-Siberian Orchestra,” O’Neill explains. “This is a group —a constantly morphing group— of extremely creative and talented individuals who are always trying to raise the bar of where a band can take its audience sonically, visually and emotionally. With that as our core ideal, the possibilities are endless.”

The Toadies Perform At The House Of Blues The Toadies will be returning to Houston this month for a concert at The House Of Blues on Saturday, December 28th. Best known as the creators of the 1995 grunge staple “Possum Kingdom,” Fort Worth’s Toadies found success during the alternative rock boom of the ’90s with crunchy yet hooky guitarbased music that put a fresh spin on hard rock. With tunes influenced by the Pixies and guitars that were powerful but melodic, the Toadies made a splash with their major label debut, 1995’s Rubberneck. However, conflicts with their record company led to their follow up, the significantly heavier Hell Below/Stars Above, not reaching fans until 2001, after which the group broke up. However, in 2008 they returned to action and began recording prolifically for their own Kirtland Records label; while their subsequent albums sounded a bit more streamlined, for the most part they stuck to the style that won them an audience, though 2015’s Heretics was a lowkey, semi-acoustic set, and 2017’s The Lower Side of Uptown found them turning up the amps and cranking up the guitar firepower. The Toadies formed in 1989 and spent their infancy playing shows in Fort Worth, Texas. Musicians cycled in and out of the Toadies lineup from the very start, and the group soon became the domain of frontman Todd Lewis, a Pixiesinfluenced musician who wrote and produced the band’s early releases. After issuing a series of homemade tapes and bringing drummer Mark Reznicek into the fold, the band released a proper EP, Pleather, in 1993. Pleather attracted attention from Interscope Records, which signed the Toadies soon after the EP’s release. Now financed by a major label, the Toadies entered the recording studio with producers Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf, who had previously worked together on Beck’s platinum-selling album Mellow Gold. Released in August 1994, Rubberneck brought the Toadies similar success by going gold the following year and platinum by the end of 1996. Most of that popularity was due to “Possum Kingdom,” a stark song with a 7/8 time signature that nevertheless became a Top 40 single. With replacement guitarist Clark Vogeler now on board, the group enjoyed its temporary space in the post-grunge landscape, playing high-profile shows with the likes of Bush, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Butthole Surfers. The Toadies had trouble producing a worthy follow-up to Rubberneck, however. Returning to the studio in 1997, they recorded a batch of new material and planned to release the resulting album, Feeler, in 1998. Interscope objected to the new songs and permanently shelved the project, prompting the disenchanted group to take a break for the rest of the decade. The Toadies eventually resumed their pace in 2001, salvaging some songs from the Feeler sessions and recording new material as well. Their longawaited sophomore album finally arrived in the form of Hell Below/Stars Above, which featured production from Rothrock/Schnapf and a brief cameo by Elliott Smith, who played piano on the title track. During the national tour that followed, though, longtime bassist Lisa Umbarger announced her decision to throw in the towel, and the rest of the group followed suit. Best of Toadies: Live from Paradise appeared shortly after the group’s breakup. Although the Toadies reunited throughout the following years for one-off shows, they didn’t officially re-form until 2008, when Lewis, Reznicek, and Vogeler banded together once again to record No Deliverance. Longtime friend Doni Blair — whose previous band, Hagfish, had emerged from the same Dallas/Ft. Worth underground scene as the Toadies — played bass during the resulting tour; one of the dates was re-
corded for the 2008 release Rock Show. The year 2008 also saw the debut of the band’s annual rock festival, Dia de los Toadies, with the Toadies headlining and like-minded Southwest acts joining them on the bill. The Toadies continued their comeback in 2010 by reviving their long-scrapped album Feeler; Interscope refused to license the original recordings to the Toadies, so the group re-recorded the songs from the album and released it in the summer of 2010. An album of fresh material, Play. Rock. Music., was released in 2012, followed by the semi-acoustic Heretics in 2015, and the harder rocking The Lower Side of Uptown in 2017. A second concert recording, Live at Billy Bob’s Texas, was released in September 2018.

Tonight we’ve dropped by The Concert Pub North to see Diamond Jack perform. We were really impressed with this band. Their arena rock sound was fantastic. All the songs they performed were done to perfection... very impressive. These guys can perform anything. From Queen to Paul McCartney and Wings, the song selection was great. Queen songs they performed included “We Will Rock You” and “Tie Your Mother Down.” From there they went into a little Aerosmith (“Sweet Emotion”), Deep Purple (“Highway Star”) and Paul McCartney and Wing’s hit song, “Live And Let Die” were exquisite. This is definitely one band you need to see. We’ll be looking for them ourselves. In a sad note, we had recorded a video of them performing the Eagles “Hotel California” from this show, but Youtube blocked it. We had hoped to show you how good they were, but Youtube spoiled our plans, so you’ll have to get out there and see them for yourselves. You’re going to love these guys.

MUSIC NEWS Secret Of Boris Perform at The 19th Hole
Post Profit Perform at The 19th Hole
We’ve made it up to The 19th Hole tonight to see Post Profit. POST PROFIT is an alternative rock band from Texas, formed in 2017. Their brand new single “Same Sad Song” has just been remastered and released to radio. The band draws from many influences, including Royal Blood, Nothing But Thieves, Highly Suspect among several notable others. POST PROFIT has had the pleasure of playing with acts such as Filter, Saliva, Drowning Pool, To Whom It May, and Sons of Texas. The band played Inklife Festival 2018 and So What Music Festival 2019. Currently they are working on a brand new EP titled “When You Think It’s Right It’s Always Wrong” scheduled for release in 2019. Their show at The 19th Hole was a lot of fun. The band is really good. The crowd at The 19th Hole really enjoyed them as well. Post Profit is Matt Jackson-Guitar/Vocals, Nick Hawner-Guitar/Vocals, Jordan Conley-Bass/Vocals, andZach Hicks-Drums/Vocals. We’ve got a couple of videos from the show for you to check out right now on our YouTube channel at houstonmusicnewstv1, so you can start watching right now. We think you’ll enjoy them too.
Opening up for Post Profit was Secret Of Boris from Dallas, Texas. Secret Of Boris has emerged from the Dallas, TX music scene with a uniquely heavy yet hauntingly beautiful hardrock sound. Their debut record Your Ghost was produced by Harder Beat 2009 Producer of the Year, Alex Gerst (Seasons After, Fair To Midland, Slow Roosevelt). “An infectious blend of catchy hooks, snappy rhythms and aggressive riffage… heavy music’s weighty crunch and even sugary 80’s pop...one of Dallas’ most promising talents,” says Jerry Rutherford of LIT Monthly. Melodic, progressive, Indie, mainstream, metal, pop – it’s like being turned on to the best stuff you’ve never heard with the comfortable familiarity of the stuff you’ve heard a million times” says Robert Miguel of Robert Miguel Presents. Having gained a rabid following throughout the Dallas/ Fort Worth metroplex, Secret Of Boris is currently touring surrounding cities and states throughout the southwest, increasing their army of loyal fans. On their way to world domination, Secret Of Boris has shared the stage with Black Light Burns, Hed(pe), F5, Underoath, Ugly Mustard, Fair To Midland, Anberlin, God Forbid, Boondox, Hopesfall, and Guns n Roses.

Screamin’ Kenny, and on drums is Jeremy Pierce. Special guest this night is harpist, Steven Snider. You’ll be able to check him out on one of the two videos we have posted from this show on our youtube channel, houstonmusicnewstv1. When it comes to performing the Blues, Tony is fantastic. He definitely has his own distinct style. Founded in 1997, the Tony Vega Band has become one of the premiere independent blues acts in the world. This highly appealing Texas act has forged their own brand of red hot blues infused roots n’ roll. Making the band’s sound especially unique is Vega’s relentlessly soulful guitar work and one of the most identifiable velveteen voices to come out of Texas in years. The hard driving, hip-shaking rumble is powered by longtime TVB drummer Jeremy Pierce and seasoned veteran bassist Larry “Lownote” Johnson. For over thirteen years the Tony Vega Band has been burning up the Texas Gulf coast and Europe. Discover Texas’ “best kept secret” for your self & find out what the buzz is all about! Yeah tonight’s show was a blast has Tony performed selections from his most recent album, “Black Magic Box,” as well as his other albums, not to mention a few really cool Blues Standards. Great Show! I loved it!
Eric Tessmer Performs at Rockefellers
Austin guitarist Eric Tessmer performs this night at Rockefellers. The place was packed this night for Eric. Eric has managed to gather together a fine fan base in Houston and they showed up in force to see what he might have in store with him with his array of guitar pyrotechnics. As we expected, Eric wasn’t going to let this crowd down, he was at the top of his game and put on one helluva show. We’re sure glad we were there for this one. Honestly though, we never miss one of Toyota Center his shows. We’re fans too. Eric has shared the stage with many great Toyota Center in musicians and been proclaimed “Best Guitarist” in 2017-2018 in Austin.

Colbie Caillat and Gone West Perform at The Clarion at Brazosport College Colbie Caillat, along with her new band, Gone West will be appearing this month at The Clarion at Brazosport College on Friday, December 13th. Some things are inevitable. More than Grammy Awards or platinum albums, sometimes friendship is greater to motivate creativity, serving as its own momentum. Such is the case for how the harmonically buoyant, impossibly lush acoustic rock-country of Gone West came to be. On a personal break from one of the most musical pop breakthroughs of the last several years, multiple Grammy-winner Colbie Caillat and her fiancée Justin Kawika Young (11 #1 Hawaiian songs) decided to head to Nashville where Caillat’s co-writer, recording artist and friend Jason Reeves was living with his wife songwriter/Academy of Country Music Award nominee Nelly Joy. For Caillat, who’d already collaborated with Taylor Swift and Brad Paisley, as well as CMA Song of the Year winner Liz Rose, it felt almost like a homecoming.? “They introduced us to all of their friends, and everyone was so welcoming,” Caillat recalls of the 2017 move. “I didn’t have any set plans, but I’d always thought it would be fun to be in a band.” The warm familiarity extended to the creative groove the four friends enjoyed from their 14-year history of making music together. While Reeves, who’s also written for Lanco, Kenny Rogers, the Jane Dear Girls and Rachel Wammack, has been working with Caillat since “Bubbly,” there was a chemistry between the four that was undeniable. When the opportunity for an acoustic tour came up based on her The Malibu Sessions, which featured the foursome, they took their friendship on the road. “We realized how much fun touring could be when you have your best friends, and significant other – and dogs on the road and onstage with you,” Caillat remembers. Suddenly a creative incubator for four friends was turning into Gone West, a fresh harmony, breezy melody group whose myriad influences landed somewhere between Laurel Canyon, Texas roadhouses, Appalachia’s harmony and the plains of the Midwest. As Joy explains, “We all come from different places in life, so we all relate to country differently,” and Reeves continues, “What we’ve always loved about country music is its history of storytelling, rich harmonies and organic instruments, and we wanted to continue in that tradition.” Indeed, a live acoustic version of “This Time” barely uploaded to YouTube when an invitation to play the Grand Ole Opry arrived. “I remember thinking, ‘Don’t mess this up!’ because I know it’s a live radio show,” Caillat recalls. “Liz Rose, who we wrote with, was there, and Rita Wilson, too. It was so emotional, and we felt so supported. You could hear a pin drop when we walked out. The foursome took it as a blessing and sign, realizing this was something more than just the joy of true collaboration. Indeed. They were inspired, and the recording process quickened. Produced and co-produced by the band, Gone West’s music brings a new freshness to modern country, straddling singer/
songwriter vulnerability, Iowan humility, Lone Star tenacity and Hawaiian steel guitar. The playing is spare enough the instruments and voices shine, while the lyrics, which offer a heart-positive embrace of life, stand-out in the mix. Whether the self-declaratory “Gone West,” where the foursome draw on their lives and the lives of the people they love for inspiration, or the sweeping love that’s not over, but has been squandered in “What Could’ve Been” with its back-and-forth lead vocals, Gone West is mapping a more evolved take on how people really inhabit their lives. Nuance rises, and truth is explored. Not that everything is so impossibly heavy. Yes, the aching “Home Is Where the Heartbreak Is,” co-written with CMA Song of the Year winner Liz Rose, is a rhythmic take on the loneliness of being in an empty relationship. But there’s also the effervescently celebratory break-up song “Confetti,” the philosophically perky letting go of “Knew You,” that sees past the pain to a selfembracing reality, and the jaunty escape of “R&R,” where the foursome finding joy in merely getting lost doing next to nothing. As Joy explains, “With four or five of us in a room, there are so many viewpoints. We’ve either experienced what we’re writing about or watched friends do the same thing Sooner or later, everyone’s been somewhere along the way, and that’s what we want these songs to be.” Certainly, the life-grabbing ballad “This Time,” co-written with Nashville
Songwriter Hall of Famer Tom Douglas, employs that notion. Invoking things we’re going to get around to – (including the Tom Petty show they figured they’d see next tour) – Gone West’s Mamas & Papas meets the Eagles vocals hit the chorus with extra sweetness, espousing, “Because next time, there may not be a this time...” Reeves explains, “Tom’s spirit is indescribable, and his brilliance is limitless. That he’d write with us before there was anything going on was amazing.” “We played him the first song we wrote as a band and he loved it and told us how important our sound was” Caillat continues. “He truly gave us the courage to continue making this record.” Young agrees. “We’ve all been on tour and written songs together, so starting this band was organic and fun. But hearing Tom’s words made us think we could really do something special.” “...and we all walked out thinking about this very differently,” Joy picks up. “It was right after the Vegas shootings, Tom Petty had died – and we’d had tickets, but hadn’t gone. It all came together in the song, and I think in our hearts about what we were meant to do.”? And so they did. Writing, exploring, enjoying the unique chemistry their friendship brought to their creativity. On the road,
at home, backstage, out in nature, wherever songs might happen. Largely recorded in their own homes with one day with outside players at Nashville’s famed Ocean Way Recording, Tides took shape with love and care. Wrapping up moments of life in melody, harmony and words, they realized, as Reeves explains, “the universe put us together,” Gone West fuses the best parts of being young, engaged and willing to face the heartbreak with a smile to get the good parts. As Joy explains of the EP’s title, “We’ve all experienced highs and lows in life and love, and the songs we wrote for this album represent those ebbs and flows.” Those tides that rise can sweep music lovers, especially ones who love breezy lifeaffirming songs, into a whole new realm of happy. Life isn’t always perfect, but when you’re Gone West, you can find the silver lining, the golden sunset, the lemonade in those moments that often pull us down.

Pop superstar Colbie Caillat has a new country band and the music is everything we imagined it would be. Comprised of Caillat, fiancé Justin Kawika Young, songwriter Jason Reevesand his wife Nelly Joy, Gone West has music that instantly puts you in the best mood no matter what’s happening around you. Blending sounds from the beach to the Midwest, the band’s debut EP has something for everyone and is an absolute must-listen. “We love to use acoustic instruments and steel guitar which originally came from Hawaii where Justin is from,” Reeves tells Celeb Secrets Country. “But really we just want to sing songs that are authentic and make people feel less alone. If we could make people less alone in any way when they are listening to our music, that is our ultimate goal.” The four have collaborated musically for fourteen years, but it was while on a personal break from one of the most musical pop breakthroughs of the last several years, Caillat and her fiancée Young decided to head to Nashville where Caillat’s frequent co-writer Reeves was living with his wife Nelly Joy. Suddenly a creative incubator for four friends turned into Gone West, a fresh harmony, breezy melody group whose myriad influences landed somewhere between Laurel Canyon, Texas roadhouses, Appalachia’s harmony and the plains of the Midwest. In a short time, they were invited to perform at the Grand Ole Opry and signed to Triple Tigers.

In The Aftermath Perform at The BFE Rock Club We dropped by The BFE Rock Club for Frankie’s Appreciation Day Party and the club was packed. A lot of people showed up to give Frankie their best. Several bands performed there that day. When we got there, In The Aftermath (pictured above) was on stage. They really had quite an audience for their performance as everyone was crowding the stage to rock with the band. The band was formed 6 years ago by drummer Ralph Wallace, guitarist Joseph Perez, and bassist Jonathan Torres. After several incarnations, the band has settled on vocalist J.D. Garza. He was brought into the band in 2017 and the band has been grooving together ever since. The band specializes in original material and has been writing some fine songs together which they performed this day on the BFE Rock Club stage. A Big Congratulations goes out to Frankie Aluotto on the great job he has done in building The BFE Rock Club into what it is today.

MUSIC NEWS Doug Strahan Performs at Katie’s Bar This night we dropped by Katie’s Bar in Bailiff to check out a new act for us. His name is Doug Strahan. Doug is based out of Austin, Texas right now. After 13 years of playing lead guitar in various bands, as well as recording and co-leading Austin’s strangest boogiedoom-beast, Chili Cold Blood and cosmic country purveyors of funky tonk, The Moonhangers, Doug released his debut solo album entitled “Coal Black Dreams, Late Night Schemes.” As much a stew pot of roots music as CCB and MH’s previous albums, the solo record eases on in the direction of Blue-Eyed Soul but finds home on the bar stool of the Dew Drop Inn, The Horse Shoe Lounge, your neighborhood watering hole. It was a different direction for Strahan, much to do with his time playing and writing with The Memphis Strange, but the Gary Stewartesque vibrato remains. In 2015, he and Good Neighbors released the sophomore, self-titled album, Strahan & The Good Neighbors. It’s country funk at it’s finest, with touches of Little Feat, JJ Cale, and The Allman Bros. For the next album, he set out to feature twin guitars front and center on six songs. The end result, produced by everyone in the band, was Twilight Drifter, released in November of 2017, best described as country rhythm and blues. His show at Katie’s was interesting. He definitely has his own take on the Blues. Regardless, it was great for us to see a new act, and you couldn’t ask for a better place to do it. Katie’s Bar is a very close and intimate setting where you can always enjoy great music. We’ve got a couple of videos from this performance to share with you on our YouTube channel at houstonmusicnewstv1. Kick back and you can start watching now.

Icons at badassery By Jay Lambs Remy Asleep In The Wake This month I would like to honor the band Asleep In The Wake!!
What do you get when four passionate and accomplished musicians on separate journeys converge for a new sound? Most would say “super group” or “a collaboration”.. In the case of Asleep In The Wake, they are neither. Formed in late 2017 as a calculated idea of “wiping the slate and starting fresh” by vocalist Matt Niece (Melovine, Vella) and bassist Hector Porras (Saturate), then meticulously solidifying the line up in late 2018 with guitarist Mike Mexas (Saturate) and drummer Elijah Santucci (Treason). Asleep In The Wake is all about transformation thru evolution as entertainers and musicians. Concussive complex rhythms coupled with haunting heavy guitars, and passionately delivered poetic vocals sum up the basis of the sound. All of that fused together with simple structure for easy listening puts Asleep In The Wake somewhere between post grunge and modern hard rock with a taste of new metal. Ultimately there are no genre labels here...only high-energy entertainment by seasoned musicians with a professional outlook on their new journey. Asleep In The Wake released their freshman EP titled “The Catalyst” in July 18th of 2019. You can find more information as well as show schedules and news at facebook.com/ asleepinthewake, Instagram@asleep_in_the_wake and Twitter @asleepinthewake. For downloadable content search Asleep In The Wake in Itunes, Spotify, Rhapsody, Google Play and Amazon. It is with great honor to entitle the band Asleep In The Wake Icons At Badassery thank you very much for all your hard work. Marcia Ball Performs at The Heights Theater Texas-born, Louisiana-raised pianist, songwriter and vocalist Marcia Ball — the official 2018 Texas State Musician — will give a special holiday performance with Carolyn Wonderland and Shelley King at The Heights Theater in Houston on Thursday, December 19, 2019. Ball has won worldwide fame and countless fans for her ability to ignite a fullscale roadhouse rhythm and blues party every time she takes the stage. Ball’s rollicking Texas boogies, swampy New Orleans ballads and groove-laden Gulf Coast blues have made her a one-of-a-kind favorite with music lovers all over the world. Her latest album, Shine Bright , produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, is full of everything music fans love about Marcia—rollicking two-fisted piano, soulful vocals, a top-shelf band of Texas and Louisiana musicians, and Marcia’s magnificent songwriting. In 2018 she was inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall Of Fame. In 2019, Ball won the Blues Music Award for Best Instrumentalist-Piano. She also won the 2019 Living Blues Award for Most Outstanding Musician (Keyboards) in both the Critics’ and Readers’ Polls. With Shine Bright, Ball set out to, in her words, “Make the best Marcia Ball record I could make.” In doing so, she has put together the most musically substantial, hopeful and uplifting set of songs of her five-decade career. Produced by Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) and recorded in Texas and Louisiana, Shine Bright contains twelve songs (including nine originals), ranging from the title track’s rousing appeal for public and private acts of courage to the upbeat call to action of Pots And Pans, a song inspired by renowned Texas political writer and humorist Molly Ivins. From the humorous advice of Life Of The Party to the
poignantly optimistic World Full Of Love , the intensity of Ball’s conviction never wavers while, simultaneously, the fun never stops. Shine Bright is exactly the album Ball set out to make. “It is a ridiculously hopeful, cheerful record,” she says, in light of some of the album’s more serious subject matter. The secret, according to Ball “is to set the political songs to a good dance beat.” Born in Orange, Texas in 1949 to a family whose female members all played piano, Ball grew up in the small town of Vinton, Louisiana, right across the border from Texas. Seeing an Irma Thomas performance in 1962 and falling under the spell of Professor Longhair’s piano playing convinced Ball to seek out a career in music. She led a couple of early psychedelic country rock bands before pursuing her solo career from her adopted hometown of Austin, Texas. After her 1978 Capitol Records debut, Circuit Queen, and a series of successful albums on Rounder Records, Ball joined Alligator in 2001 with the release of the critically acclaimed Presumed Innocent, the first of her six releases for the label, four of which are Grammy nominated. Altogether she holds eleven Blues Music Awards, thirteen Living Blues Awards, and five Grammy Award nominations. She has been inducted into both the Gulf Coast Music Hall Of Fame and the Louisiana Music Hall Of Fame. The Texas State legislature named her the official 2018 Texas State Musician. As her hometown Austin Chronicle says, “What’s not to like about Marcia Ball?” Since joining Alligator, Ball has blossomed as a songwriter. Each album has been filled with fresh, original songs, never more so than on Shine Bright . Ball easily draws her
listeners deep into her music with instantly memorable melodies and imaginative imagery. Her songs paint vibrant musical pictures richly detailed with recognizable characters, regional flavors, universal themes and colorful scenes, both real and imagined. Living Blues declares, “Her originals sound like timeless classics and southern soul masterpieces that no one else can imitate.” Now, with Shine Bright, Ball’s aggressively hopeful songs are energized by Steve Berlin’s inventive and exciting production, creating electrifying music that is daring, inspired, poignant and timely. The Boston Globe calls Ball “a compelling storyteller” who plays “an irresistible, celebratory blend of rollicking, two-fisted New Orleans piano, Louisiana
swamp rock and smoldering Texas blues.” The New York Times says, “Marcia Ball plays twofisted New Orleans barrelhouse piano and sings in a husky, knowing voice about all the trouble men and women can get into on the way to a good time.” The Houston Chronicle says simply, “She’s as perfect as an artist can be.” “I still love the feel of the wheels rolling,” Ball says of her love of touring, “and the energy in a room full of people ready to go wherever it is we take them.” With both Shine Bright and her legendary live performances, Marcia Ball will shine a light into the darkness, making the world a brighter place one song at a time.

Ghostland Observatory Returns To White Oak Music Hall December 28th Austin’s Ghostland Observatory wil be returning to White Oak Music Hall this month on Saturday, December 28th. Ghostland Observatory is a funky, electro pop twosome based out of Austin, Texas. The duo includes Thomas Ross Turner on synthesizer and drums and singer Aaron Behrens, the latter of who has a voice comparable to a modern day Rick James. Together, these 2 musicians have been creating a danceable blend of music sounds since the 2005 release of delete.delete.i.eat.meat. and since that time they have released 3 other albums, Paparazzi Lightening, Robotique Majestique and Codename: Rondo. Ghostland Observatory truly comes alive when they play in concert. Thomas Ross Turner usually wears a cape as he provides the background sounds to the super funky voice of Aaron Behrens who along with singing, livens up the audience, and the stage, with his stellar dance moves. Since becoming a band, Ghostland Observatory has played on tour and has made appearances at both the Austin City Musical Festival and Coachella. Thomas and Aaron of Ghostland Observatory are happy to officially release their new EP, “Channels,” available now on all digital platforms! The four track record is accompanied by four new videos, all made by the band using analog equipment and found footage. This marks a new, creative and inspired period for Ghostland Observatory and the project has revitalized the duo’s creative spirit. The guys are thankful and happy to share these captured creative moments with all the fans! Much love and light to all and enjoy! After four records and years of headlining shows across the country, Ghostland took an extended hiatus to reset and get the creativity flowing like never before. Thomas and Aaron returned wtih a bang in 2018
and invite you for a wild ride with a full tourand a fresh album. “We worked hard on this record, and it’s just the tip of the iceberg of what’s to come,” Aaron says. “This is our rebirth, the phoenix rising from the ashes, and we have no plans to slow down. We’re stepping out of the weird simulation we’ve been in, and coming back into the world for the beginning of round two.” The band released their first fulllength album, delete.delete.i.eat.meat, in 2005 on Turner’s Trashy Moped Recordings. They also released their second CD, Paparazzi Lightning, on the same label in January 2006. On October 16, 2007, they made their national television debut on NBC’s Late Night with Conan O’Brien, performing the song “Sad Sad City”. They appeared on Austin City Limits in 2007, and released their first live DVD, Live from Austin, TX on November 13, 2007. In a video shot at the Vegoose Music Festival, they announced their album Robotique Majestique, later released on March 4,
2008. On December 26, 2007, Austin newspaper, the Austin American-Statesman, announced Ghostland Observatory as their band of the year. They performed at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, in Austin, TX in 2006, 2007, and 2009. During their 2007 Austin City Limits performance of “The Band Marches On”, the “University of Texas”” marching band accompanied the duo on stage for a lights out performance. They have appeared at Coachella in Indio, CA and Voodoo Experience in New Orleans, LA. October 26, 2010 saw the release
Ghostland Observatory’s fourth album, Codename: Rondo, which was introduced with a show at the Cedar Park Center, in Texas, on October 28, 2010. At that time they took the laser show to another level, having 16 lasers and a sophisticated assemblage of mirrors scattered around the stage to produce visual effects in real time usually only seen in movies. On Thursday March 17, 2011 they participated in a friendly battle against Snoop Dogg live at the Red Bull SoundClash on South Padre Island, Texas. On August 13, 2011 they performed at Pacific Festival in Orange County, CA alongside Cut Copy and Steve Aoki. They played in the Beat Tent on night 3 of CounterPoint Music Festival in Fairburn, GA. On April 10, 2013, they posted on their Facebook page “Yes it is true. We are on hiatus right now. Bathing and relaxing in the cosmos. Rejuvenating our spirits and soaking in the cosmic rays. Much love to all our GLOheads out there. See y’all in the future.” They returned for one show on January 31, 2014, opening for Jurassic 5 at the Icelantic Winter on the Rocks concert at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre. They also returned to play several shows during South by Southwest (SXSW 2016) in Austin, Texas.
