EAGLES BRING THEIR HOTEL CALIFORNIA TOUR TO HOUSTON’S TOYOTA CENTER They can check out anytime they like, but the Eagles can never seem to leave the legacy of Hotel California. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers have announced that they will be playing their classic 1976 album in its entirety on a 2020 tour. The historically-significant 1976 album from The Eagles will get an entire tour dedicated to the songs that have helped shape the culture of music across the world. As Variety reports, this whole tour idea was preceded by a grouping of shows in Las Vegas in which they performed the Hotel California album in its entirety. These Vegas shows were the first time the new group of members had performed the full album live – and also featured an expansive live orchestra and backing choir. Vince Gill and the late Glenn Frey’s son, Deacon, were brought into the group following Frey’s passing in 2016. The band, now comprising Don Henley, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmit, with Deacon Frey (son of late Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey) and country superstar Vince Gill, announced dates across the U.S. including pairs of shows in Atlanta, New York, Dallas, Houston, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. They will be appearing in Houston at Toyota Center for two nights, March 6th and March 7th. The concerts will include the Hotel California set — bolstered by an accompanying orchestra and choir — followed by a lengthy greatest-hits set with a brief intermission between. Hotel California is the fifth studio album by the Eagles. The album was recorded by Bill Szymczyk at the Criteria and Record Plant studios between March and October 1976, and then released on Asylum in December. It was their first album with guitarist Joe Walsh, who had replaced founding member Bernie Leadon, and is the last album to feature bassist Randy Meisner. The front cover is a photograph of the Beverly

Hills Hotel by David Alexander. Hotel California topped the US Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart. At the 20th Grammy Awards, the Eagles won a Grammy Award for “Hotel California”, which won Record of the Year, and “New Kid in Town”. The album was nominated for Album of the Year but lost to Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours. Three singles were released from the album, with two topping the Billboard Hot 100: “New Kid in Town” and “Hotel California”, whilst “Life in the Fast Lane” reached No. 11. A 40th anniversary special edition of Hotel California was released in November 2017. Hotel California is one of the best-selling albums

of all time. It has been certified 26* Platinum in the US, and has sold over 32 million copies sold worldwide, making it the band’s best-selling album after Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975). It has been ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time. In 2003 and 2012, it was ranked number 37 on Rolling Stone’s list of “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time”. The first song written for the album was “Hotel California”, which became the theme for the album. Henley said of the themes of the songs in the album: “They’re the same themes that run through all of our work: loss of innocence, the cost of naiveté, the perils of fame, of excess; exploration of the dark underbelly of the American dream, idealism realized and idealism thwarted, illusion versus reality, the difficulties of balancing loving relationships and work, trying to square the conflicting relationship between business and art; the corruption in politics, the fading away of the Sixties dream of “peace, love and understanding.”” Bernie Leadon, who was the principal country influence in the band, left the band after the release of the previous album One of These Nights. For Hotel California, the band made a conscious decision to move away from country rock, and wrote some songs that are more rock & roll, such as “Victim of Love” and “Life in the Fast Lane”. Leadon was replaced by Joe Walsh who provided the opening guitar riff of “Life in the Fast Lane” that was then developed into the song. The title for “Life in the Fast Lane” was inspired by a conversation between Frey and his drug dealer during a high speed car ride. On the title “Hotel California”, Henley said that “the word, “California,” carries with it all kinds of connotations, powerful imagery, mystique, etc., that fires the imaginations of people in all corners of the globe. There’s a builtin mythology that comes with that word, an American cultural mythology that has been created by both the film and the music industry.” In an interview with the Dutch magazine ZigZag shortly before the album’s release, Don Henley said: “This is a concept album, there’s no way to hide it, but it’s not set in the old West, the cowboy thing, you know. It’s more urban this time. It’s our bicentennial year, you know, the country is 200 years old, so we figured since we are the Eagles and the Eagle is our national symbol, that we were obliged to make some kind of a little bicentennial statement using California as a microcosm of the whole United States, or the whole world, if you will, and to try to wake people up and say ‘We’ve been okay so far, for 200 years, but we’re gonna have to change if we’re gonna continue to be around.’” The melody of the title track, “Hotel California”, was written by Don Felder. Don Henley wrote most of the lyrics, with contributions from Glenn Frey. Henley noted that The Beverly Hills Hotel had become a “literal and symbolic focal point of their lives at that time”, and it became the theme of the song. Frey wanted the song to be “more cinematic”, and to write it “just like it

was a movie”. Henley sought inspiration for the lyrics by driving out into the desert, as well as from films and theatre. Parts of the lyrics of “Hotel California” as well as the song “Wasted Time” were based on Henley’s break up with his then girlfriend Loree Rodkin. Henley said of their personal and professional experience in LA: “We were getting an extensive education, in life, in love, in business. Beverly Hills was still a mythical place to us. In that sense it became something of a symbol, and the ‘Hotel’ the locus of all that LA had come to mean for us. In a sentence, I’d sum it up as the end of the innocence, round one.” Frey came up with a cinematic scenario of a person who, tired from driving a long distance in a desert, saw a place for a rest and pulled in for the night, but entered “a weird world peopled by freaky characters”, and became “quickly spooked by the claustrophobic feeling of being caught in a disturbing web from which he may never escape.” In an interview with Cameron Crowe, Frey said that he and Henley wanted the song “to open like an episode of the Twilight Zone”, and added: “We take this guy and make him like a character in The Magus, where every time he walks through a door there’s a new version of reality. We wanted to write a song just like it was a movie.” Frey described the song in an interview with NBC’s Bob Costas as a cinematic montage “just one shot to the next ... a picture of a guy on the highway, a picture of the hotel, the guy walks in, the door opens, strange people.” Frey continued: “We decided to create something strange, just to see if we could do it.” Henley then wrote most of the lyrics based on Frey’s idea, and sought inspiration for the writing by driving out into the desert as well as from films and theater. So far, reviews from the concerts they’ve performed are reporting that the band sounds fantastic and the shows are averaging over 3 hours long with the intermission included, probably the longest concerts that the band has ever performed on their own. Billboard magazine reports, “Henley always carries a significant vocal load, but Hotel California ups the ante. He does the heavy lifting on the album, singing lead on five of the eight vocal tracks. Add his other lead vocals, falsettos and harmonies on songs like “One of These Nights,” “Witchy Woman” and “Best of My Love,” and that he’s alternating between drumming and playing guitar and percussion, and it’s quite the juggling act. Not to mention he has to keep enough gas in the tank to get through the aching “Desperado” in the encore, a song with a high degree of vocal difficulty. Friday night, his voice sounded as strong and pliant as it ever has, easily hitting the highest of notes, while retaining his trademark huskiness. Vince Gill and Deacon Frey first played with the band in July 2017 at the Eagles’ first gigs following Glenn Frey’s 2016 death — the official band is listed as “Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit, with Deacon Frey and Vince Gill” — and in the subsequent two years, they have grown fully comfortable with their roles on stage while remaining appropriately deferential to Frey’s memory. Between Gill’s angelic vocal ability (he easily handled Meisner’s lead vocals on “Try and Love Again” and “Take It to the Limit” and Frey’s on “New Kid in Town” and “Lyin’ Eyes” ), his otherworldly harmonies with Henley (they are among the best harmony singers out there) and his guitar prowess, it feels like he should have always been an Eagle. Deacon Frey carries his father’s legacy lightly on his shoulders, never trying to imitate him on tracks like “Take It Easy” or “Peaceful Easy Feeling,” but instead bringing his own earthy, rootsy vocals. Together, they’ve brought a new warmth to the band. At the conclusion of Hotel California, Henley spoke his first words to the audience: “We’re going to take a 20-minute break, put our heads back together and play you everything we know.” He wasn’t far from the truth. What followed was a 23song set of solid hits (including Walsh’s solo and James Gang tunes) that make up the soundtrack of any Baby Boomer or Gen X’ers lives.”

MUSIC NEWS

Tennis Performs at White Oak Music Hall Acclaimed indie-pop duo Tennis has announced plans for a maor North American headline tour. The dates get underway February 25 at Kansas City, MO’s Madrid Theatre & Café and then continue through early May. They will be appearing in Houston at White Oak Music Hall on Monday, March 2nd. Support on all headline dates comes from Molly Burch. The band is touring in support of their new album, Swimmer, which will be released this month on Friday, February 14th. Indie-pop duo Tennis—made up of husband and wife team Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore—are based in Denver, Colo., but “based” is a relative term when it comes to these two musicians, who split their time between land and sea. They wrote the majority of both their 2011 debut album Cape Dory and 2017’s Yours Conditionally whilst on sailing excursions. Then, a four-month sailing trip in the Sea of Cortez, Mexico, resulted in their next project, Tennis’ fifth album Swimmer. Tennis’s highly anticipated fifth studio album, SWIMMER, arrives via Tennis’s own Mutually Detrimental. The album is preceded by the band’s eagerly awaited new single and first new music in almost three years, “Runner, “available now at all DSPs and streaming services. The track is joined by a colorful companion video, directed by longtime collaborator Luca Venter and inspired by singer Alaina Moore’s love of “old musicals and all things Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire and Bob Fosse.” “Runner” is streaming now via the official Tennis YouTube channel. “Runner” was immediately met by a wide range of critical applause upon its release last week, with The Line of Best Fit simply describing it as “dazzling.” “Runner” is an “incandescent taste of Tennis’s upcoming fifth LP,” declared Australia’s Happy. “Bliss out in technicolor.” Cool Hunting hailed the “Runner” video, writing, “The visual treatment is full of sequins, night skies and satin—the ideal accompaniment for Moore’s falsetto, crescendoing synths, and lush production.” Produced by Tennis and mixed by fourtime GRAMMY® Award-nominee Claudius Mittendorfer (Panic! At The Disco, Parquet Courts), SWIMMER sees the Denver, CO-based husband and wife duo of Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore elevating their distinctive pop approach to heretofore unexplored new heights, experimenting with atypical instrumentation, complex time changes, and an increased focus on lyrical storytelling fueled in part by a series of lifechanging experiences that only served to strengthen their already powerful personal and creative bond. As with their 2011 debut album, CAPE DORY, and their acclaimed fourth LP, 2017’s YOURS CONDITIONALLY, the new album was written largely on the sea, this time during a four-month sailing excursion in the Sea of Cortez, Mexico as well as Tennis’s own Denver, CO recording studio. “‘Runner’ is the first song we wrote for our fifth record,” says Moore. “It began as a guitar riff Patrick recorded while we were living off grid, anchored in a fisherman’s cove called San Juanico. The only instruments we had on board were an acoustic guitar and a drum sequencer, but the limitations seemed to work in our favor. Until that point we had no clear vision for our writing. The demo Patrick recorded that day outlined our future, the first contours of our next record. “It took months to write a chorus that fit. I wanted to respond to Patrick’s ideas without altering them. I cycled through chord progressions and pages of lyrics. A year passed. The song seemed to actively resist coherence. My breakthrough came when I began to think of the song as a conversation between two songwriters, a series of questions and answers. It constituted a shift in our writing relationship from one that was solipsistic— my songs, which were distinct from Patrick’s— to one of collaboration and attunement. I often wonder if a truly equitable partnership exists anywhere between anyone, but this song feels like a testament to its possibility.” “Runner” follows 2017’s acclaimed WE CAN DIE HAPPY EP, hailed by Atwood Magazine as “a warm, dynamic explosion of spellbinding melodies, evocative soundscapes and inti-

mate lyrics… Tennis take a big sigh of relief, and then, with refreshed gusto, continue to dive deep into human emotions, internal and external relationships, society’s norms, and more.” The EP includes the buoyant lead single, “I Miss That Feeling,” joined by a companion video streaming via YouTube. Tennis’s most recent full-length LP, YOURS CONDITIONALLY, made a spectacular chart debut upon its 2016 release via Mutually Detrimental, arriving at #3 on Billboard’s “Alternative Albums” chart as well as at #2 on the “Vinyl Albums” tally, ultimately proving one of the year’s top 50 highest selling vinyl releases. Along with its popular success, YOURS CONDITIONALLY proved a critical favorite, with

Lead singers Tiffany and Monica just take over the room with their sultry vocals and engaging attitudes. Tonight they were really performing some great songs. From The Doobie Brothers “Long Train Running” to Aretha Franklin’s “Respect,” they really crossed the barriers from genre to genre. Other songs that caught our attention were “Walking On Sunshine” by Katrina and The Waves and Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition”. It was definitely a hot evening of entertainment as this fine act kept the dance floor packed all night long.

The Aggrolites Perform At The Scout Bar Reggae Ska rockers, The Aggrolites will be binging their special brand of Reggae music to the Scout Bar on February 22nd. The Aggrolites are a 21st century ska band on a mission to remind modern audiences what proper ska sounded like, whether in Kingston in 1963 or in London in 1979. The Aggrolites formed in 2002, originally getting together as the backing band for a one-off Los Angeles show backing Jamaican music legend Derrick Morgan. Gathering members from two minor Southern California reggae acts, the new band consisted of vocalist and lead guitarist Jesse Wagner,

rhythm guitarist Brian Dixon, organist Roger Rivas, bassist J. Bonner, and drummer Korey Horn. The concert was a success, and the band stuck together to record an album with Morgan that was never completed. Emboldened despite the recording setback, the band took the name the Aggrolites (“aggro” being a slang term of the ska-loving skinhead subculture of Britain in the 1960s and ’70s, meaning pent-up aggression, and “lites” in tribute to the greatest ska band of all time, the Skatalites) and became the go-to guys on the West Coast ska and reggae circuit, backing a wide variety of golden-age Jamaican and British artists on their American dates, including the great Prince Buster and Culture lead singer Joseph Hill. On their own, with Rivas’ funky organ work taking the instrumental lead in substitution for their lack of a horn section and Wagner taking vocal duties, the Aggrolites recorded their debut album, Dirty Reggae, at a live-in-the-studio session in 2003. Replacing Horn with new drummer Scott Abels (formerly of the popular third wave ska band Hepcat), the Aggrolites signed to the Epitaph Records subsidiary Hellcat Records in 2005. Their second album, The Aggrolites, was released in May 2006, with their third, Reggae Hit L.A., following in June 2007, by which time drummer Horn had returned to the fold along with new bass player Jeff Roffredo. In 2009, the Aggrolites released IV; it was their last album for Hellcat Records, and their fifth LP, Rugged Road, was issued by Young Cub Records in 2011. After releasing a live disc in 2012, the group’s release schedule slowed, but in 2017 they teamed with Dela of Slightly Stoopid, backing him up on his debut album, Opening Night. By this time, the Aggrolites’ membership had shifted again, with Rivas, Wagner, and Roffredo joined by rhythm guitarist Ricky Chacon and drummer Alex McKenzie. This lineup was responsible for 2019’s Reggae Now!, the band’s first full-length release in eight years.

Tennis continued from page 5 Paste praising it as “a collection that explores the uncertainty of one’s identity and their understanding of past experiences and current trajectory. And it’s as poppy as anything.” YOURS CONDITIONALLY “is less a product of crashing waves,” wrote W, “and more the result of Moore’s ongoing meditation on how she defines herself in relation to those around her and, as a self- professed feminist, how she navigates contemporary definitions of femininity and gender roles within a monogamous relationship.” “Filled with melodies that evoke ‘70s AM radio, YOURS CONDITIONALLY sees Tennis wrestle with the conditions of love and commitment,” wrote Interview. “Their story and music remain romantic, but one’s reminded that while they’re ‘in it together,’ they’re also wholly individual.” In addition to their frequent live activity, Tennis has made a number of high profile media appearances, spanning NPR to NBC, while also collaborating on campaigns for top brands like Gucci, Madewell, and Vinyl Me, Please.

Roots From The Clay Perform at The Last Concert Cafe This night at The Last Concert Cafe was certainly a lot of fun as the sounds of Reggae Music filled the air. On stage was the Reggae Band, Roots From The Clay. Based in Houston, Roots From The Clay is Texas’ fastest rising Roots Reggae band. Roots From The Clay was conceived in May 2017 by Jamaican duo: drummer, songwriter & producer Jermaine “Songo” Wilson and wife Dr. Aria A. Wilson. Jermaine is a graduate from Edna Manley College of Music in Jamaica and toured the world as the drummer for many well known Jamaican Reggae artists. Aria was previously a signed solo reggae artiste “Aria Morgan” with a full-length album “Fulltime Love” to her credit. Jermaine and Aria started the band and later with the support of bassist “King David” Lee, keyboardist Robert Lauder and guitarist Rey Gonzalez, they perform together as the band Roots From The Clay (RFTC). RTFC’s ambition is to encourage people through positive music. Their music confronts real-world issues. Racial equality, poverty, and relationships are honestly examined through pulsing reggae beats. Roots From The Clay’s influences come from Jamaican Roots, Lovers Rock and Dancehall Reggae music from the ’70s through the 2000s. Their first album “No Struggle” was launched in November 2018 and was distributed by VPAL records. The album has received airplay on radio stations in the U.S., Canada, Europe, South America, the Caribbean and Africa. As we said, the sounds of Reggae Music filled the air and the band was superb. All throughout the patio area people were dancing to the Reggae Sounds. It made for a wonderful night. We’ve got a couple of videos from the show to share with you on our YouTube channel, houstonmusicnewstv1, so when you get a chance, you can start watching. Tesla Perform At The House Of Blues After performing on the Monsters Of Rock cruise in early February, California rockers Tesla will kick off a run of dates on February 14 in Pensacola, Florida and wrap things up on February 26 in Houston, at the House of Blues. Tesla is continuing to tour in support of “Shock”, which was released in March via UMe. The follow-up to 2014’s “Simplicity” was produced by DEF LEPPARD guitarist Phil Collen. Tesla bassist Brian Wheat admitted to SiriusXM’s “Trunk Nation” that “Shock” divided fhe band’s fans due to its lighter, poplike sound, with some blaming its direction on Collen, who co-wrote many of its tracks. The disc was recorded piecemeal while Tesla was on tour with Def Leppard, with some of the tracking taking place in backstage areas and hotel room lobbies. “Some people hate it, some people love it,” Wheat said. “I tell you, after five weeks, six weeks, it’s leaning more toward, ‘You know, it had to grow on me. I’m actually enjoying it now.’ That’s the thing, that’s why we called it ‘Shock’. We knew it was going to shock people. The other thing is, we couldn’t just continue to do the same record over and over and over again, so we tried something different. It’s cool. The songs go down well live, I see people singing, our fans are in there singing ‘Shock’, singing ‘Taste Like’, singing ‘[Tied To The] Tracks’, singing ‘Take Me Alive’. It’s cool. Look, after so many years, I’m glad we’re able to make another record because not the first on everyone’s agenda anymore.” Collen previously co-wrote and produced the Tesla song “Save That Goodness”, which was released in August 2016 and included on the “Mechanical Resonance Live!” album. Thanks to their die-hard, loyal fan base and their younger generation offspring, TESLA continues to tour to sold-out crowds around the world. Celebrating 30+ years of kick ass Rock ‘n’ Roll gives their audience a musical journey that keeps the loyal fans coming back and has newcomers realizing, “Wow, I didn’t know they did that song! Tesla were formed in Sacramento, CA, in 1985, out of an earlier, locally popular group called City Kidd, which dated back to 1982. The band wrote original music and knew their name didn’t fit the sound. At management’s suggestion, the band named itself after the eccentric inventor Nikola TESLA, who pioneered the radio but was given only belated credit for doing so. After playing several showcases in Los Angeles, Tesla quickly scored a deal with Geffen and released their debut album, Mechanical Resonance, in 1986; it produced the hard rock hits and crowd favorite, “Modern Day Cowboy” and “Little Suzi.” Mechanical Resonance reached the Top 40 on the album charts, and eventually went platinum. It was the follow-up, 1989’s, which truly broke the band. The first single, “Heaven’s Trail (No Way Out),” was a hit with hard rock audiences, setting the stage for the second single, a comforting ballad called “Love Song” which substituted a dash of hippie utopianism for the usual power ballad histrionics. “Love Song” hit the pop Top Ten and made the band stars, pushing The Great Radio Controversy into the Top 20 and doubleplatinum sales figures; the follow-up single, “The Way It Is,” was also a hit. Tesla’s music is often referred to as heavy metal but is better described as blues metal. The band’s lyrics also strayed from the themes popular in heavy metal, particularly in the 1980’s at the beginning of their career. A further distinction from their con-

temporaries was their blue-collar, T-shirtand-jeans image which was in strong contrast to glam bands of the time, which were characterized by big hair, leather pants, and flashy makeup. During the early years of their career, Tesla toured with David Lee Roth, Def Leppard, and Aerosmith. Tesla’s current lineup includes four of the five original members: Jeff Keith (vocals), Frank Hannon (guitars), Wheat and Troy Luccketta (drums). Guitarist Dave Rude joined in 2006 as the replacement for Tommy Skeoch.

FEBRUARY Double Vision Perform at The BFE Rock Club

It was a night of Foreigner music this evening at The BFE Rock Club as Houston’s premiere Foreigner Tribute Band, Double Vision HTX took to the stage. The crowd went crazy and throughout the whole show you could hear the folks there singing along with the band. It really made for one helluva Tribute Night! When it comes to Tributes, nothing beats the guys in Double Vision HTX. They may well be the best tribute act in Houston. I swear, at times you can close your eyes and you’d swear that you were hearing the actual Foreigner perform. Lead singer, Randy Folk does a great Lou Gramn, although slightly adding his own touch on it which really spices up things. Eric Halpern really shines on guitar, sounding very much like Mick Jones. Keyboardist Adam Rawlings is a force unto himself. God knows how many bands he performs with, but it would appear that his heart is definitely with Double Vision HTX. He really covers all the keyboard parts perfectly. Rounding things out is the fantastic rhythm section of Bill Thompson on drums and Joey Edgerly on bass. Besides keeping the band on track and in time, they also handle background vocals and keep those harmonies sounding beautiful. Yeah folks, this was one helluva show and you should have been there. They Heights Guitar were fantastic. We’ve got a couple of videos from the show to share with you on our YouTube channel, houstonmusicnewstv1, so when you get a Tech chance, you can start watching. Blacktop Mojo Perform At Warehouse Live Feb. 25 Growing up in small town East Texas taught the boys from Blacktop Mojo that a little leap of faith and a lot of hard work will get you pretty far in life. Formed in late 2012 by vocalist Matt James and drummer Nathan Gillis, Blacktop Mojo’s fiery blend of heavy grunge grooves, classic rock guitar riffs, and Southern Metal shredding falls somewhere between Soundgarden and Lynyrd Skynyrd. After their debut album “I Am” in 2014 and a few years cutting their teeth in dive bars, dancehalls, and honky tonks, the band decided to go all in. In 2017 they teamed up with famed Muscle Shoals Sound producer Jimmy Johnson (The Rolling Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Seger) and his long time engineer Steve Melton for their sophomore outing entitled, “Burn The Ships” at Sound Emporium in Nashville. During the recording of the record, the guys took the leap and quit their day jobs, moving into a small house together in Palestine, Texas where they all still live today. The house created an unbreakable fellowship between the band and a culture of constant creativity. Released via their label Cuhmon Records, “Burn The ships” yielded two top 40 Billboard singles on the Mainstream Active Rock charts including “Where The Wind Blows” (#27) and a cover of the Aerosmith classic, “Dream On” (#31). The album cycle saw a heavy bout of touring where the band shared the stage with a wide range of heavy hitters including Bon Jovi, Candlebox, and Puddle of Mudd, a guest appearance on “Sammy Hagar’s Rock and Roll Road Trip, as well as festival appearances at major rock festivals around the US. After concluding touring early that year, the guys returned home in October of 2018

where they locked themselves in the band house for six months to write and record demos for their third studio record “Under The Sun”. Recorded in 2019 at Rosewood Studios in Tyler, TX with long time friend and producer Philip Mosley, The record is a hodgepodge of throwback sludgy rock and metal mixed with sensual and at times even, carnal blues. “Under The Sun” debuted at #19 on the Billboard Hard Rock albums Chart and its lead off single, “Can’t Sleep”, gave the band another Billboard Mainstream Rock Top 40, rising to #27 on the chart. The band continues relentlessly touring to support their latest studio venture, and continuously strives to be one of the hardest working, Independent bands in Rock and Roll today. A hard-driving Southern rock unit based out of Palestine, Texas, Blacktop Mojo’s fiery blend of post-grunge, classic rock, and metal falls somewhere between Soundgarden, Black Stone Cherry, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The group’s approach, full of crunchy guitar chugging and minor-key melodies, was firmly in place on their first full-length album, 2014’s I Am, though the richer production of 2017’s Burn the Ships boosted the heaviness of their sound. Under the Sun Founded in 2012 by frontman Matt James and drummer Nathan Gillis, Blacktop Mojo eventually morphed into a five-piece with the addition of bass player Matt Curtis and guitarists Ryan Kiefer and Kenneth Irwin. They self-released their debut album, I Am, in 2014, followed by a heavy bout of touring that saw the group sharing the stage with a wide array of heavy hitters including Bon Jovi, Puddle of Mudd, Sammy Hagar, and Drowning Pool. The band teamed up with Muscle Shoals producer Jimmy

Johnson for their sophomore outing, Burn the Ships, which came out in December 2017. The band hit the road in support, and devoted most of the next ten months to live work, returning home in October 2018 to start writing material for their third LP. By the time they went

into the studio with producer Philip Mosley, Chuck Wepfer had replaced Kenneth Irwin on guitar, and he made his recording debut with Blacktop Mojo on Under the Sun, released in September 2019.

The Texas Tenors Perform At The Clarion At The Brazosport College Feb. 22 The Texas Tenors have amassed a huge fan base worldwide with over half a million followers on social media and more than 20 million views on YouTube, Facebook and I n s t a g r a m . They are Billboard Magazine’s #10 Classical Artist in the World for 2019. With impressive live ticket sales tracked by PollStar they are considered the most successful touring group in the history of America’s Got Talent. The Texas Tenors appeared on the most recent season of NBC’s national hit television show America’s Got Talent: The Champions. After airing worldwide their fan base grew even larger than before. As consummate professionals these three friends with a simple All-American dream have proven their impact will be long lasting as their popularity continues to grow. They have performed more than 1400 live concerts in just the last 10 years. With concerts at performing arts centers, casinos, symphony halls, outdoor festivals and major corporate events, The Texas Tenors have shown they truly possess that rare, ever sought after quality - mass appeal. Along with their current touring shows 10th Anniversary Tour, Broadway & American Classics and Deep in the Heart of Christmas, Marcus, JC and John are excited to offer a brand new concert for the 2020-2021 season.A unique vocal trio, the A unique vocal trio, the Texas Tenors combine country, classical, and pop influences into one crowdpleasing formula. The group was formed in 2009 by JC Fisher, a classically trained vocalist who also had a background in country and pop music. Fisher received a Master’s degree in music from Wichita State University, and worked as an actor and singer before finding a lucrative sideline in performing a one-man show on cruise ships. While working as an entertainer at sea, Fisher got the idea of forming a trio that could cross the boundaries of genre while performing with lush orchestral arrangements, and recruited his friends Marcus Collins and John Hagen to help realize his vision. Collins was gifted in pop music and show tunes, and enjoyed a successful history in musical theater, as well as working regularly as a TV actor. Hagen, meanwhile, was an accomplished classical vocalist who had sung with respected professional opera companies across the United States. As the Texas Tenors,

the three devised a show that allowed them to show off their individual talents in various styles, as well as their collective skill. Months after they formed, the group landed a big break when they were invited to compete on the television talent show America’s Got Talent, where they finished in fourth place. Their appearances on the show boosted their profile considerably, and before the year was out, the Texas Tenors recorded and released their first album, which featured several of the tunes they performed on America’s Got Talent along with a variety of popular numbers and operatic arias. In 2011, the self-titled album was remastered and reissued under the title Country Roots: Classical Sound. It didn’t take long for the trio to become a potent live draw, touring in the United States, the United Kingdom, and China, as well as making regular appearance in Branson, Missouri. In 2013, the group spent plenty of time in the recording studio as well as on-stage; they released two full-length albums, the country-themed You Should Dream and the holiday collection O Night Divine, as well as two patriotic singles, “God Bless the U.S.A.” and “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and an EP drawn from an appearance on the TV series Larry’s Country Diner. In 2015, the Texas Tenors released a single for youngsters, “Ruckus on the Ranch,” and two years later, they delivered their fourth studio album, 2017’s Rise. Featuring a guest appearance from Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers on the Tenors’ version of “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,” Rise was the group’s most successful release to date, debuting at number one on the Classical Albums chart and number five on the Country Albums chart. They returned in 2018 with the musical-themed A Collection of Broadway & American Classics.

Kris Angelis Performs at Leon’s Lounge Feb. 15 Kris Angelis grew up on a farm in Florida, writing songs and learning to harmonize with her identical twin sister in their treehouse. Her award winning songs and records have been on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, in the top 3 on iTunes, and played on SiriusXM The Pulse and terrestrial radio across the US and Europe. Kris has been featured in Relix Magazine and Music Connection Magazine and was chosen for the 2020 Grammy NEXT program. She played in all 50 of the United States in 2019 while writing and recording a new record, That Siren, Hope which came out Jan 24th. Kris Angelis is a radiant new singer/ songwriter living in the city that shares her name. The Los Angeles based musician writes lyrics that read like poetry (“the rain turned to lace on the first day and the last day that I was a child”) and delivers harmonies imbued with a sense of longing. She names Brandi Carlile, Ray LaMontagne, Hanson, Rufus Wainwright and David Gray as influences to her acoustic folkrock sound, but adds that everything in her life influences her music. Music has always been part of her life. “I started singing when I started talking,” Angelis says. Growing up on a 45-acre hay farm outside Gainesville, Florida, Angelis spent her days riding horses and playing with her identical twin sister, which she reminisces about in Remember the Rain. “We made up little songs in our tree house,” says Angelis. “It was a great way to learn to harmonize because our voices blend so well.” As a child, she played violin and sang in her church choir. She learned to play guitar when she was 19-years-old. “When I began playing guitar, I really started writing a lot of songs,” she says. It was with the help of a musician friend that Kris first began learning guitar. She continued learning on her own — and dived right into songwriting. “It’s how I create, how I express myself. But it’s also a huge part of how I get through life. Music is a universal language. It evokes emotion. It resonates in our souls, it actually vibrates in our bodies. There’s a Victor Hugo quote that expresses exactly how I feel about it: ‘Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.’ That’s how songwriting has been for me.” And she certainly hasn’t been silent. Kris has put her musical talents to good use, developing her folkpop sound in two EPs, Brief Sounds and Ghost in the Corner. She has also toured the country, as well as collaborated with other musicians on several side projects. Her first full-length album was The Left Atrium. The thread of experimentation that began back on the farm carried through into The Left Atrium. It’s was a fusion of genres and

TIRED OF MISSING HAPPY HOUR SOMEWHERE ELSE? DON’T WORRY, COME TO CHAPULTEPEC LUPITA, sounds that included elements of everything from smoky jazz to bold rock. It also has its share of the truly experimental, including such nontraditional instruments as tuned wine glasses and kitchen implements. This wasn’t accidental. Teaspoons feature in the percussion for Empty Cabinets, a song about tea. And the clapping in the childhood-sweet Neverland is actually a game of pattycake. For Kris, the process of creating each song was important. “Each song had its own artistic journey, went its own way and became its own thing.” The Left Atrium is a great example of who Kris is as a musician — beautiful, eclectic, surprising, and yet somehow always herself. Her newest release is That Siren, which was just released last month and continues Kris’ journey into music. Acting since age 11, she has studied with master teachers from Juilliard and Tisch School of the Arts in New York City. Along with her twin sister Alix, she has made numerous television appearances including a Pizza Hut commercial and also a guest spot on the NBC series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Angelis draws on her acting ability to express emotion in her songs. She bluffs her way through I Wish telling a convincing lie whose truth is revealed at the end, whereas she conveys complete candor on Brief Sounds (“I looked all around for you so I could pretend that I didn’t care that you were there”). No Place Like Home addresses regret (“I walked through the smoke and I coughed and I choked, when I could have sung out instead”) while it also imparts hope (“I’ll take another step in the direction I’m going”)
