QUEENSRYCHE BRING THEIR “VERDICT” TOUR TO HOUSTON’S HOUSE OF BLUES In support of their forthcoming album The Verdict, which was released in March of 2019, Queensryche will be performing in Houston at The House Of Blues on Thursday, January 23rd. The Verdict will be the band’s third album since splitting with original lead singer Geoff Tate in 2012. After losing a protracted legal battle over the Queensryche name, Tate now tours under the name Operation: Mindcrime. Queensryche’s last album was 2015’s Condition Hüman. It seems the four years between albums hasn’t dampened the metal spirit of the band, according to guitarist Michael “Whip” Wilton. “The Verdict is the most metal and the most progressive record we have made in a long time,” said Wilton in a statement. “I couldn’t possibly be more excited for everyone to hear this.” “I’m extremely proud of what we were able to accomplish on this record,” said singer Todd La Torre of the third album he’s been a part of since joining in 2012. “The relentless dedication and hard work of everyone involved has been very rewarding. I am excited and looking for-

ward to it no longer just belonging to us, but belonging to the world. We hope you all enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it!” “The Verdict” was produced, mixed, and mastered by Chris “Zeuss” Harris (Rob Zombie, Iced Earth, Hatebreed) at Uberbeatz in Lynwood, Washington; PlanetZ in Wilbraham, Massachusetts; and Watershed Studio in Seattle, Washington. For the past two years, original Queensryche drummer Scott Rockenfield has been taking time off from the group’s touring activities to spend time with his young son, who was born in early 2017. Filling in for him has been former Kamelot drummer Casey Grillo.

Asked by Ultimate Guitar if it’s true that La Torre laid down the drum tracks on Queensryche’s upcoming album, “The Verdict”, guitarist Michael Wilton said: “Yeah, it is. Basically, the songs were in a state of disarray and that includes drums. When we found out that Scott wasn’t going to be able

to record the drums for this album, it was a natural succession to Todd. Todd has been writing almost all of the drum parts — he wrote most of them for the last two albums and Scott just played what he did and gave his spin on it [live]. So, this wasn’t anything new for Todd. It was a just a matter of, during pre-production, hooking up a MIDI drum kit and finished up the drums during that time and it worked out great. We were off in a time crunch schedule and there was no need to seek out a studio drummer or something like that when we have someone who’s able to do it. He’s been playing drums his whole life and cutting his chops on Queensryche, so it was a natural succession for Todd, and he pulled it off great.” Wilton also talked about the heavier musical direction of “The Verdict” compared to that of 2015’s “Condition Hüman”. He said: “I think it seemingly oozed out of us and I think it had a lot to do with the band touring so much. We’ve been touring on the ‘Condition Hüman’ album for, like, three years. Seeing how the fans react to the music and how we felt about it on stage had a lot to do with how we attacked this new album. It really put a spin on the writing process as well. Because people aren’t going to buy the record — they’re going to stream it or listen to it on the radio, [we focused on the

fact that] we are going to be playing it live all the time. So we wanted to write music that sounds really good live. Being on the road — that’s what steered us in that direction. When you’re on the road, you have time to play with ideas, so everybody had lots of riffs and everything. So we got a producer who could organize it all. The songs were in a state of non-completion compared to when we went in to record ‘Condition Hüman’. So we had all these bits and pieces and pre-production became an extension of the writing process where we were filling in those blanks. Then we had to learn to play it as one piece, and then we had to record it. It was a process that was more like what we used to do back in the ’80s.” La Torre, who has played drums since the age of 13, recently told Shred Shack that he was the obvious choice to lay down the drum tracks on “The Verdict”. “Our original drummer, Scott, he had a baby back in 2017, and he took paternity leave, and he’s still kind of been on that leave of absence,” Todd said. “So we just continued to keep writing and doing things as a full band, like we’ve always done. He just wasn’t available for this one. I think it all came together pretty seamlessly, actually, and we’re looking forward to the release of this record.” Asked by a fan on Facebook if Rockenfield’s lack of involvement with “The Verdict” means that Grillo will handle the drumming duties for Queensryche in the studio going forward, the band responded: “We’re just taking it one day at a time and trying not to look too far ahead. Things are always changing and we can’t predict what the future will bring. Right now we’re just concentrating on getting this album in the hands of our Rÿchers and touring.”

Steve Harris’ British Lion Plays The Scout Bar Iron Maiden founding member and bassist Steve Harris will return with his side-project British Lion for a new album, The Burning, in the new year. Along with the LP news, the band has shared the lead single, “Lightning”, and announced a US tour which will reach The Scout Bar this month on January 22nd. Back in 2012, Steve Harris released his first solo album, British Lion. He’s now adopted that moniker for his follow-up project, The Burning. British Lion should endear themselves nicely to Iron Maiden fans: “Lightning” is a narrativedriven heavy metal song with distinguished guitar leads and classic tones in the NWOBHM vein. “We’ve been working on The Burning for the past couple of years and everyone is really pleased with the results,” vocalist Richard Taylor remarked in a press release. “We started playing some of the songs live on recent tours and got a fantastic reaction from our fans, so we are really excited to be sharing this album with the world. We’re also looking forward to heading out on the road again and seeing everyone at the shows.” British Lion is comprised of Harris on bass and keys, Taylor on vocals, guitarists David Hawkins and Grahame Leslie, and drummer Simon Dawson. Harris produced the record with engineer Tony Newton at Barnyard Studios. The band will head out for an 18-day US trek in support of the album in January, playing mid-sized venues that should be a nice change of pace for Harris after the massive stadium and arena run for Iron Maiden’s “Legacy of the Beast Tour”. The Burning features 11 new songs and will be released worldwide on January 17 2020 in Digipak CD, double gatefold Vinyl and Digital Download formats. The Burning is a follow-up to BRITISH LION’s 2012’s eponymous debut album, Steve’s first ever musical venture outside of Iron Maiden which was pronounced both “brilliant” and “a big hearted ferocious triumph” by the music press. The band have since been tirelessly honing their live show performances with club tours every year and festival dates whenever time allows, building and establishing a firm and dedicated fan-base, reaching 24 countries across the globe so far, and now with their first ever Stateside tour. Steve says, “It’s great for us to finally come to America to play some shows around the release of the new album there through Explorer1 Music. The E1 team have been extremely proactive and we’re delighted to be working with them on both the record and the tour.” The founder of the long-running heavy metal outfit Iron Maiden, bassist/songwriter Steve Harris was born in London on March 12, 1957. A highly touted soccer player in his youth, he gave up his sporting career to pursue his musical aspirations, forming Iron Maiden in 1976. Though the group’s 1979 debut EP The Soundhouse Tapes reflected their punk inspirations, their self-titled 1980 full-length fully embraced metal, earning a Top Five hit at home. Harris composed much of Maiden’s material, drawing upon mythology and the occult to write hard rock epics like “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” “Children of the Damned,” and “The Number of the Beast.” The 1981 addition of vocalist Bruce Dickinson further solidified the band’s position at the forefront of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and throughout the 1980s, Iron Maiden enjoyed a huge following at home and abroad despite almost no mainstream media attention. Although Dickinson’s 1991 departure proved a severe blow to the band’s popularity, they soldiered on with new vocalist Blaze Bayley until Dickinson returned to the lineup in 1999, in time to celebrate Iron Maiden’s 20th anniversary. Although kept busy by Iron Maiden, who continued to make records and tour with Dickinson back at the helm in the years that followed, Harris was able to gradually record his first solo album. Arriving in 2012, British Lion was the result of Steve Harris working with musicians from a band of the same name that he had managed and written with during the 1990s. With vocals provided by Richard Taylor, alongside guitarists Graham Leslie and David Hawkins, the record was heavily influenced by 70s rock artists such as the Who and UFO.

Following the initial announcement of the album’s release in July 2012, Classic Rock revealed that the project originated with a band, named British Lion, which Harris had been mentoring in the early 1990s. Harris confirmed this during an interview with Classic Rock the following month, explaining that he became involved after “Graham Leslie [guitar] came to me with a cassette of songs... and I thought they were really good, so I said I’d try to help his band do something. I ended up managing them and producing them and writing with them.” After the original band split up, he “kept in touch with Richie [Taylor, vocals] and Graham, and then Richie was working with another guitarist called David Hawkins, who’s a really talented guy, and so we started writing songs together.” After several years of work, due to Harris being occupied

Steve Harris’ British Lion with Iron Maiden, the album ultimately consists of “six songs written with Richie and David, there’s one with just me and Richie, and the others are me, Richie, Graham and a couple of other

guys that were around at the time.” In an interview published by Kerrang! in September, Harris said that he considers British Lion “more of a side-project” than a solo record.

Sleeping With Sirens Perform At White Oak Music Hall Already in the middle of a European tour and after plenty of teasing on social media, metalcore band Sleeping with Sirens isn’t stopping anytime soon—they’ve announced even more tour dates for early 2020. The band will be joined by Set It Off, Belmont and Point North. You can catch them this month at White Oak Music Hall on Thursday, January 23rd. Sleeping with Sirens’ sixth full-length album, How It Feels to Be Lost, was released in September 2019, with a sound reminiscent of the band’s heavier music early in their career. “It felt like we finally found what we were looking for with this record,” frontman Kellin Quinn said in a press release for How It Feels to Be Lost. “The lyrics, the emotion, the musicianship, and the production are all there. It’s the best we could do. It’s going to be exciting to get on stage and perform these songs. We finally found ourselves.” Days before the album’s release, Sleeping with Sirens parted ways with drummer Gabe Barham. “We all love him, and we’ve created amazing music together, but in the last year or so we’ve been growing in different places musically,” Sleeping with Sirens said in a statement at the time. “There are absolutely no hard feelings and we wish Gabe success in all of his future endeavors.” How It Feels To Be Lost, Sleeping With Sirens’ sixth studio album, dropped this past September. The record features tracks like “Leave It All Behind,” “Break Me Down,” and “Agree To Disagree,” as well as the track aptly titled “Medicine (Devil in My Head).” This LP sees the band return to their post-hardcore roots, a stark difference from 2017’s Gossip. The band is bestknown for cult-classic hits like 2011’s “If You Can’t Hang” and “Do It Now Remember It Later” from Let’s Cheers To This and “If I’m James Dean, You’re Audrey Hepburn” from 2010’s With Ears To See And Eyes To Hear. Sleeping With Sirens released their sixth studio album, ‘How It Feels To Be Lost’ back in September via Sumerian Records. recorded at MDDN Studios in Los Angeles and produced by Zakk Cervini (Yungblud & Good Charlotte) and Matt Good (Asking Alexandria), the album has heralded as a major return to the band’s earlier, heavier form and has been met with huge acclaim from both fans and critics alike! ‘How It Feels To Be Lost’ has clocked up a staggering 16 million Spotify streams to date. The 4 singles released from the record so far, ‘Leave It All Behind’, ‘Break Me Down’, ‘Agree To Disagree’ and title track ‘How It Feels To Be Lost’ have garnered 5.4 million YouTube video views and 12.8 million streams on Spotify alone. They have been featured on flagship streaming playlists including Spotify’s ‘Rock This’ and ‘New Core’, Amazon Music’s ‘Rock Scene’ as well as being included on Apple Music’s ‘Breaking Hard Rock’, Spotify’s ‘New Music Friday’ & ‘Kickass Metal’ and Deezer’s ‘Heavy New Rock’. Since emerging in 2010, Sleeping With Sirens have tested the boundaries of rock by walking a tightrope between pop, punk, metal, hardcore, electronic, acoustic, and even a little R&B. This high-wire balancing act attracted a faithful fan base known as “Strays,” generated global album sales in excess of 1.5 million, ignited over half-a-billion streams, and achieved a trio of gold-selling singles: “If I’m James Dean, You’re Audrey Hepburn,” “If You Can’t Hang,” and “Scene Two-Roger Rabbit.” They launched two albums—Feel and Madness—into the Top 15 of the Billboard Top 200. They have graced magazine covers around the globe having been featured on the cover of Alternative Press a whopping eight times. Falling on the more melodic side of the post-hardcore world, Florida’s Sleeping with Sirens create a whirlwind of emotion with their yearning and aggressive blend of metal and emo influences. Formed in 2009, Sleeping with Sirens — featuring vocalist Kellin Quinn, guitarists Jack Fowler and Jesse Lawson, bassist Justin Hills, and drummer Gabe Barham — quickly caught the attention of metalcore label Rise Records, which signed them and released their debut record, With Ears to See, And Eyes to Hear,

in 2010. The album launched the band onto the Billboard Heatseekers chart, debuting at number seven and selling over 25,000 copies. Their sophomore effort, Let’s Cheers to This, arrived in May of the following year. At the beginning of 2013, the bandmembers announced they had entered the studio to record their third album, and Feel was released just six months later. The album debuted at number three on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. Madness, the band’s fourth studio long-player and first outing for Epitaph Records, arrived in early 2015. Live and Unplugged followed the next year, an acoustic set that also included covers of Sublime’s “Santeria” and Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris.” The band’s fifth set, Gossip, arrived in 2017 on Warner Bros. Produced by David Bendeth, the album featured a

stark, popfriendly shift heard on tracks such as the lead single “Legends.” Over the next two years, the band played major tours of North America and Europe in support of the album, and in early 2019 announced a new record deal with Sumerian Records. Their first effort for the label, How It Feels to Be Lost, arrived later that year. Their sixth album, How It Feels marked a

return to their heavier post-hardcore sound and featured the singles “Leave It All Behind” and “Break Me Down,” as well as a collaboration with Benji Madden. Upon release, the set debuted within the Top 100 on the Billboard 200.

Up On A Quasar Perform at the Last Concert Cafe We’re at the Last Concert Cafe to see Houston’s answer to The Grateful Dead, Up On A Quasar. Up On A Quasar is a project from local Houston musicians who’s goal is to put a unique and fresh take on one of the most influential American rock bands, among them the Grateful Dead. The Grateful Dead was a classic American experience - a musical movement synonymous with deeply personal but emotionally mature lyrics, the freedom to spontaneously explore new and jet setting sound combinations, and the counterculture of the 1960s to the present day. The band carries the honor of being the ultimate musicians’ musicians. In Houston, a group of young, musically seasoned ultra-fans feel that the Dead still has a tremendous message to offer today’s society, sonically as well as philosophically. Up On A Quasar - brings the groove to an ensemble of harmonically inclined multi-instrumentalists, recreating an authentic Dead experience that channels the poignancy of modern times and the experience of professional musical talents. If you haven’t experienced Up On A Quasar, then the two videos that we’ve posted on our YouTube channel, houstonmusicnewstv1, will open you to a whole dimension of music. Check ‘em out right now.

Your Guide To Great Food and Entertainment Inside The 610 Loop Channel 63 Performs at Rudyard’s You can always catch something different at Rudyard’s British Pub. Tonight was our first encounter with the “Ambient Noise” of a gentleman who calls himself Channel 63. Channel 63 is from New York, so this is obviously some new type of music (?) that they’re having there at the moment. To describe it would be to tell you to tune in your radio somewhere between stations, where all you hear is the hiss and whine of nothing there. Well there you got it. That’s what it sounded to us. It’s not for everybody, but he did have an audience there that was really getting into it. What the hell do I know.... this might actually be the future of music. At least I got to hear something different.

Steve Krase Performs at The Big Easy This was a great month for shows. We got to see another one of our favorite performers, Steve Krase, as he presented his “Annual Holiday Ball” at The Big Easy. When it comes to the Blues, Steve just oozes it. It comes out every pore of his body when he performs. He is the consummate professional. He dresses for the occasion. Tonight Steve was having a blast. You could tell by his stage performance, occasionally making his forays into the audience to perform up close and personal with the folks there. It was definitely a lot of fun. You need to check him out sometime if you haven’t seen him perform. If you have seen him, then you already know what we’re talking about. We have two videos from Steve Krase’s Holiday Ball to share with you right now on our YouTube Channel at houstonmusicnewstv1. Just tune in right now and start watching. Y & T Perform at Warehouse Live Legendary rockers, Y&T will return to Houston for a special concert at Warehouse Live this month on January 29th. Opening for Y&T will be The Kendall Mason Band. Before Mötley Crüe, before RATT, even before there was a Metallica, Y&T was slogging away in sweaty rock clubs around America. When the band formed in the early 1970s, little did they know they would set the standard for hard rock bands that trailed. Many of the biggest acts of the ’80s became popular opening for headliners Y&T—and cut their teeth on the band, as evidenced by the Y&T mentions in tell-all books by acts such as Metallica and Mötley Crüe. A legendary live band that arguably never managed to translate its electric onstage intensity into its studio albums, Y&T stood within reach of the Grail of rock & roll stardom many times in their long career — but through a series of mistakes, bad timing, and sheer bad luck, the ultimate prize always seemed to elude them in the end. Taking their name from a Beatles song, the group was originally formed as Yesterday & Today in San Francisco, around 1973, by vocalist and lead guitarist Dave Meniketti, bassist Phil Kennemore, and drummer Leonard Haze. After stealing rhythm guitarist Joey Alves from a rival band, the group began to gig constantly around the Bay Area, opening for such heavyweights as Journey and the Doobie Brothers, while building a strong local following. They were eventually signed to a contract by London Records, which released their eponymous debut in 1976 and its follow-up, Struck Down, two years later, but dropped the foursome when neither album delivered any hits. Luckily, the band persevered through a few lean years and was duly rewarded with a new longterm deal from A&M Records in 1981, signaling this fresh start by shortening its name to Y&T. Earthshaker, their first album for the label, came out later that year and was a resounding success, earning Y&T a number of high-profile opening slots with AC/DC and Kiss, and culminating in a memorable performance at the next year’s prestigious Pink Pop Festival in Holland. By then, an optimistic Y&T were already recording their next album, Black Tiger, in England with producer Max Norman, who, despite his growing résumé (the Tubes, Ozzy Osbourne, etc.), civilized raging on-stage anthems like “Open Fire,” “Barroom Boogie,” and “Forever” under a meticulous but somewhat lifeless studio sheen. The LP didn’t quite match the acclaim and excitement of its predecessor and, although 1983’s succeeding Mean Streak added a livelier sound (courtesy of new producer Chris Tsangarides), and notched a monster international hit with “Midnight in Tokyo,” Y&T had yet to make a major impact on the American market, where hard rock and metal were enjoying unprecedented platinum sales from the likes of Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister, and Mötley Crüe. Y&T’s next effort, 1984’s In Rock We Trust, was another disappointment by comparison and yielded no hits, but the band’s well-received appearance at the 1984 Monsters of Rock Festival at least inspired A&M (whose inexperience for promoting hard rock and metal was becoming increasingly evident) to transpose Y&T’s blistering greatest-hits show into the following year’s revelatory Open Fire set. And among the live recordings was snuck in a studio track as irresistible and catchy as it was premeditated, called “Summertime Girls,” which

finally scored a major radio and MTV hit with its unprecedented layers of keyboards and Meniketti’s deliberate karaoke on Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth. Such were the ’80s, though, and after being hastily reprised on the band’s next studio set, Down for the Count, in late 1985, the song climbed as high as number 55 on the Billboard charts, and landed Y&T more tours opening for the Crüe and Aerosmith, yet ultimately signaled their departure from A&M (the obligatory greatest-hits set, Best of ’81 to ’85, emerged in 1990). Of course, Y&T were no strangers to second chances, and when hotshot record executive John Kalodner — best known for orchestrating Aerosmith’s incredible career resurrection — approached them with a tantalizing offer to record for on-the-rise Geffen Records, the planets seemed to be aligning at last. Unfortunately, the same calculated image and musical overhaul (add hair spray, subtract aggression, equals glam metal heaven) that had worked so well for Aerosmith mysteriously misfired for Y&T on 1987’s once again average-selling Contagious (whose title track’s video even seemed to have been filmed on the same set as the ‘Smith’s “Rag Doll”). And the ejection of longtime drummer Leonard Haze to make way for the infinitely cuter (and, to be fair, extremely competent) Jimmy DeGrasso rubbed many longtime fans the wrong way — regardless of Haze’s reported ongoing struggles with substance abuse. This was also rumored to be the cause behind Joey Alves’ replacement by Stef Burns prior to 1990’s Ten, whose songs sounded more like classic Y&T but failed to strike a nerve with fickle hard rock consumers, still preoccupied with image instead of substance. Tired of fighting a losing battle, Y&T

would officially disband a short time later (their passing eventually mourned via the release of their farewell gig as 1991’s Yesterday & Today Live), increasing the void of quality hard rock bands amid all of the bubblegum glam casting a pall over the birth of the ’90s, yet also sparing them from the ruinous fate awaiting all of those opportunist bands when grunge finally emerged. Years passed, though; grunge came and went, and 1995 unexpectedly saw the final Y&T lineup reconvene for a new studio album entitled Musically Incorrect and, two years later, the aptly named Endangered Species, after which Dave Meniketti spent

some time exercising his blues kicks on 1998’s On the Blue Side. He later formed a new touring band under his own name and released the Meniketti album in 2002, but with interest in Y&T finally in resurgence, the timing seemed once again ripe for a reunion. This began to take shape by way of some long-needed reissues of their classic catalog (boasting worldwide sales exceeding four million by now) and a pair of Unearthed rarities collections, after which Meniketti and old sparring partner Phil Kennemore resumed touring across America as Y&T, with the help of guitarist John Nymann and drummer Mike Vanderhule.

Wide Open Throttle Performs at The BFE Club This night we’re attending Wide Open Throttle’s Christmas Benefit for Toys For Tots. They’ve been doing this for year’s now at BFE and it’s one of the highlights of the year for me. I go every year. It’s a fantastic show and for a really great cause. Anything that benefit’s kids is something I want to be in on. I’ve really enjoyed every Christmas show they’ve done there. Wide Open Throttle is filled with a bunch of really great guys with big hearts. For those of you that already go to this, you need no explanation, but for the uninitiated, every year Wide Open Throttle dresses up like Santa and His Helpers and puts on this beautiful extravaganza. Every song the band performs is a popular rock song by a major artist that they rewrite the lyrics to with Christmas themed lyrics. It’s fantastic. You might be listening to a Black Sabbath song, but then you realize it’s all about Santa delivering gifts... or something along that line. Unbelievable. What a great idea! We’ve got three videos from the show to share with you right now. Just tune into our YouTube channel at houstonmusicnewstv1 and start watching right now. It’s going to be a lot of fun.

By Jay Lambs Remy Kevin Hamlin This month I would like to entitle Kevin Hamlin! In 2015 Kevin got into the music scene because he was fighting suicidal depression. His friend Jason Thomas talked him into going to 18th St. Pier to see Saturate, Dead Horse Trauma, Calling Chase, The Scars Heal in Time and Lost Cause which are all now tattooed on Kevin’s arm for helping him beat his depression, along with Twelve Years Driven, Para Bellum, Anova Skyway, Astoryia, and Broken Valor. He started promoting those who helped him and it built his name in the industry, because he was honest and did it for the right reasons. Kevin’s son died in 1991 and that’s why he decided he wanted to help children. So he used that drive and his local music connections to build this platform tune out cancer. Dwight Yoakam Performs at The Arena Theatre Dwight Yoakam is currently touring across 2 countries and has 15 upcoming concerts. He will be performing in Houston this month at The Arena Theatre on Thursday, January 23rd. Dwight Yoakam has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide, and heis a 21-time nominated, multiple GRAMMY Award winner. He has 12 gold albums and 9 platinum or multi-platinum albums, with five of those albums topping Billboard’s Country Albums chartand another 14 landing in the Top 10. Nearly40 of Yoakam’s singles have charted on Billboard, with 14 peaking in the Top 10. TheLSD Tour, featuring Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, and Dwight, unites three of music’s most celebrated and iconic voices on one epic cross-country package for the very first time. Kicking off June 12, 2018 at Blue Hills Bank Pavilion in Boston, MA and rolling through iconic amphitheaters and theaters in major markets across the country, the LSD Tour concludeson August 18, 2018 at Farm Bureau Insurance Lawn in Indianapolis, IN. Support willcomefrom Los Angeles rock outlier King Leg. Yoakam’s self-curated SiriusXM channel, titled Dwight Yoakam and The Bakersfield Beat ‘Where Country Went Mod’, will launch in late April. Thechannel celebrates the Bakersfield sound and those whom it has inspired, including Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Wynn Stewart, Tommy Collins, The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Eagles, The Blasters, Lucinda Williams, and more. Itencompassesall that is California country and country rock, in all of its various and varietal hybrid forms, from Ricky Nelson to Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt. The channelincludesartists from the movement in LA in the early to middle ‘80s

that Yoakam broke out ofand featuresbands as diverse as X, Lone Justice and Los Lobos. This movement was encapsulatedon the series of albums titledA Town South of Bakersfieldand has led variations over time to the current continuing country scene in LA, all of which Yoakam has dubbed as a segment for his channel entitled “That Town South of Bakersfield:From Cow Punks to Now Punks”.In 2016,Yoakam releasedhis bluegrass albumSwimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars...on Sugar Hill Records. Featuring a band of bluegrass luminaries, this album boasts a collection of reinterpreted favorites from his catalogue, as well as acover of Prince’s “Purple Rain”.Produced by nine-time GRAMMY winner Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton), Jon Randall (songwriter of “Whiskey Lullaby”), and Yoakam himself, and mixed by Chris LordAlge, this album reflects the love for bluegrass music that Yoakam developed at an early age in Kentucky and that has inspiredhim for many years thereafter. In addition to his musical career, Yoakam is a formidable film and television actorwho has appeared in over 40 feature films, includingSling Bladeand Panic Room. In 2016, he recurredin David E. Kelley’s Amazon seriesGoliath. Recently, he appeared in director Steven Soderbergh’s filmLogan Luckywith Channing Tatum and Daniel Craig. Yoakam iscapable of seamlessly melting into his rolesand impressively standing toe-to-toe with some of the world’s top thespians over the course of his storied and successful acting career, including Jodie Foster, Tommy Lee Jones, Jared Leto, Forest Whitaker, and Matthew McConaughey. With his stripped-down approach to traditional honky tonk and Bakersfield country,

Dwight Yoakam helped return country music to its roots in the late ’80s. Like his idols Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and Hank Williams, Yoakam never played by Nashville’s rules; consequently, he never dominated the charts like his contemporary Randy Travis. Then again, Travis never played around with the sound and style of country music like Yoakam. On each of his records, he twists around the form enough to make it seem like he doesn’t respect all of country’s traditions. Appropriately, his core audience was composed mainly of roots rock and rock & roll fans, not the mainstream country audience. Nevertheless, he was frequently able to chart in the country Top Ten, and he remained one of the most respected and adventurous recording country artists well into the ’90s. In 2001, Yoakam debuted as a writer and director, also issuing the soundtrack South of Heaven, West of Hell to accompany it. Two years later, he debuted on a new label (Audium) with Population Me, while Reprise issued the compilation In Others’ Words to compete with it. In 2004 he released Dwight’s Used Records, a 14-track anthology of duets that appeared on other artists’ albums,

unreleased covers, and cuts Yoakam contributed to various tribute compilations. An album of all new material, the self-produced Blame the Vain, followed in 2005 along with the live album Live from Austin, TX. An album of Buck Owens covers, Dwight Sings Buck, appeared in 2007. Released in 2012, 3 Pears — Yoakam’s first album since returning to Warner Bros. Records after a trio of releases for New West Records, and his first album of original material since 2005’s Blame the Vain — featured a pair of Beck productions, “A Heart Like Mine” and “Missing Heart,” recorded at Beck’s home studio in California. 3 Pears debuted at 18 on the Billboard Top 200, his highest chart position ever. Three years later, Yoakam returned with Second Hand Heart. In 2016, Yoakam took a step back even deeper into country music traditions with Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars..., his first bluegrass album, featuring high lonesome reworkings of some of his bestknown tunes.

The Hollywood Spotlight By Hollywood Steve Rangel Glenn Bryant “A Little Of This And That” I’m not sure that singer/ songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Glenn Bryant could have have chosen a more appropriate title for his new 14 song offering. “A Little Bit Of This And That” perfectly describes this collection of original songs that is truly all over the map. Attempting to cover this amount of ground musically is quite ambitious, to say the least. So let’s discuss... After taking a listen, the first word that comes to mind is “raw”. While the production is studio quality, Bryant wisely chooses to forgo typical studio gloss and polish. As a result, “A Little Of This And That” retains something of a live performance sound and vibe, which well suits both this material and Bryant’s approach to it. But as I alluded to earlier, it is the diversity of the material that makes this release so unique. Bryant does not limit himself to one style...or even two or three. While primarily a blues guitarist (his finest moments here are when he’s functioning in

that role), he plays multiple instruments, as well as handling vocal duties on music that runs the gamut between blues, rock, alternative, funk, R & B, and experimental electronic. There’s even a Latin rock bit (“Motivo”) on which Bryant does a rather convincing impersonation of Carlos Santana. It’s the rare artist who is bold enough to disregard limitations and preconceived labels and to explore so many avenues musically. Hats off to Glenn Bryant for doing just that. The inherent risk in this approach, unfortunately, is that an album can suffer from a lack of direction and iden-

tity when the material is this diverse. Also, as these tracks were recorded at different times and studios and utilized an array of musicians, there’s no sense of continuity in production or performance.

Despite these factors, “A Little Of This And That” is an intriguing piece of work for anyone with a taste for something different.

Darrel Appelt “Long Time Good Time” Call me old school (or just old), but I don’t have a particular appreciation for modern country music. Mainly because there’s not much about it that sounds like country. Seems like so much contemporary country music is loud guitars and driving drums, with just a bit of steel guitar laid in. Or acoustic pseudopop songs from a flavor-of-themonth Top 40 diva. All of which makes a release like “Long Time Good Time” so exhilarating and refreshing. Singer/songwriter Darrel Appelt has put together a solid country offering that...wait for it...actually sounds like country! Like all gifted country singers, Appelt has a pleasing, storyteller quality to his voice. The great Gordon Lightfoot comes to mind. This 12 song collection is perfectly balanced, with snappy toe-tappers (“Back Road”, “Take A Little Time”, “Just Another Texas Song”), radio ready gems (“Blue Eyed Girl”, “Good Lord Willing”, “Long Time Good Time”), and country attitude (“She’s Gone”, “The Way She Looks At Me”, “Honky Tonks & Whiskey”). There’s even a great blues groove on “My Baby Likes My Texas” and a smart sentimental piece called “Carry On The Family Name”. All the musical performances here are first rate. Appelt has as-

sembled a quality band, consisting of talented players who have a clear understanding of his music and vision. “Long Time Good Time” features excellent production work by Ron Treat and Kevin Lively at Castle Row Studios in OKC. All of which combines to create a thoroughly impressive end result. Who knows, maybe there’s still hope for contemporary county music...
