Weird Al Yankovic will be returning to Houston this month for a very special concert at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on Saturday, June 15th. This show will feature a “first” for Weird Al, namely a full orchestra., hence the name of the tour “Strings Attached.” In addition to that, Weird Al will be bringing in more colorful costumes, a video wall and lots of cool props. In fact, this show will be a veritable high-energy, rock and comedy show unlike anything you’ve ever seen him do before. If you haven’t seen a Weird Al Yankovic show before, or even if you have, be sure to make it out to this one. Al tells that this one will be his best show yet. “I wanted to follow up my most bare-bones tour ever with my most elaborate and extravagant tour ever. We’re pulling out all the stops for this one.” “Weird Al” Yankovic is the biggest-selling comedy recording artist in history, earning four Grammys and fifteen career nominations. He is best known for his hilariously irreverent parodies of hit songs, including “Eat It,” “Like A Surgeon,” “Smells Like Nirvana,” “Amish Paradise,” “White & Nerdy,” and “Tacky.” Yankovic’s 14th studio album Mandatory Fun (2014) made headlines when it became the first comedy album in history to debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart, and the first comedy album to even reach the top of that chart in over 50 years. The single “Word Crimes” debuted in the Billboard Top 40, making Al one of only four artists to have had Top 40 singles in each of the last four decades (the other three being Michael Jackson, Madonna and U2). He recently received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Few could have guessed that “Weird Al” Yankovic – who as a shy, accordion-playing teenager got his start sending in homemade tapes to the Dr. Demento Radio Show – would go on to become a pop culture icon and the biggest-selling comedy recording artist of all time, with classic song and music video parodies such as “Eat It,” “Like a Surgeon,” “Smells Like Nirvana,” “Amish Paradise,” “White & Nerdy” and “Word Crimes.” Now in his fourth decade as America’s foremost song parodist, he has been the recipient of numerous awards, including five Grammys® (out of sixteen total nominations) and a string of Gold and Platinum albums. In 2015 and 2016, Weird Al’s Mandatory World Tour encompassed 200 shows throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia, including two nights at the Hollywood Bowl and a soldout gig at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. In the spring of 2018, Al performed 77 shows as part of his Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour, where he and his bandmates
of over 35 years played set lists comprised almost entirely of his original (non-parody) material, and without any of their signature high-octane production (no costumes, props or giant video screens). And in 2019 Weird Al will follow up his most bare-bones tour with his most extravagant tour ever, Strings Attached, where he and his band will be backed every night by a full orchestra. Weird Al’s 14th studio album, the Grammy® award-winning Mandatory Fun (2014), became the first comedy album in history to debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, and the first to even reach the top of the chart since 1963. Yankovic set the U.S. record on Spotify for having the most tracks from one album in the viral top 10 at one time, taking the top four spots. In addition, the single “Word Crimes” debuted in the Billboard Top 40, making Al one of only four artists to have had Top 40 singles in each of the last four decades (the other three being Michael Jackson, Madonna and U2). Al has remained active as a recording artist. June 2017 saw the release of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (Dreamworks), for which Al co-wrote and performed the film’s theme song. In August 2017, Al wrote and performed “The North Korea Polka (Please Don’t Nuke Us)” for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO). In November 2017 Legacy Recordings released Squeeze Box: The Complete Works of “Weird Al” Yankovic, a remastered 15disc box set (including a rarities album) plus a 120-page book of archival photos, all housed in a replica of Weird Al’s trademark accordion. Al also recorded cover versions of the Squidbillies theme for Adult Swim and the Ramones’ “Beat on the Brat” for a Dr. Demento compilation album, and produced remixes of two hit singles for Portugal. The Man (“Feel It Still” and “Live in the Moment”). And March 2018 brought us “The Hamilton Polka,” a frantic tour de force mash-up of 14 songs from the Broadway smash, commissioned by Lin-Manuel Miranda himself and released as part of his “Hamildrops” series. In addition to his cult-hit feature film UHF (1989), his late ‘90s CBS Saturday morning series The Weird Al Show and numerous AL-TV specials he has made for MTV and VH1 over the years, Yankovic has remained a staple of film and television, from appearances on The Simpsons, 30 Rock, The Goldbergs and How I Met Your Mother to performing live on the Primetime Emmy Awards and starring in his own concert specials for Disney, VH1 and Comedy

Shinedown Bring Their Attention Attention Tour to the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion June 21 Atlantic recording artists Shinedown will be bringing their “Attention Attention Tour” to the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion this month on June 21st. Shinedown is touring in support of their new album, Attention Attention. Opening acts on the tour include Badflower, Dinosaur Pile-Up, and Broken Hands. Shinedown is Brent Smith (lead vocals), Zach Myers (guitar, backing vocals, piano), Eric Bass (bass, backing vocals, acoustic guitar), and Barry Kerch (drums). Attention Attention is the sixth studio album by the group. Released on May 4th of last year, the band decided to take a different approach with this album and issued a “concept album”. The theme of the album centers around an individual who is overcoming negativity and the associated problems that go with it to be completely reborn as a new person. Attention Attention produced four singles from the album. They are “Devil,” “The Human Radio,” “Get Up,” and “Monsters.” The songs “Devil” and “Get Up” have reached the number one spot on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs Chart. “Get Up” is certainly getting a lot of attention from this album. The song, written by lead vocalist Brent Smith deals with the human spirit in it’s time of need. Brent feels a deep connection with this song as after battling his own demons. He looks at it as a “light in the darkness” when he found himself observing his close friend, Shinedown’s bassist Eric Bass go through a bout with clinical depression. This was the catalyst of the songs origin. When Brent put pen to paper, a beautiful, universal song rooted in Brent and Eric’s raw vulnerability took shape. The song has definitely been given a life of its own as it has produced the most airplay for one of their songs and has also become their 13th #1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs Chart (the second most in the history of the chart, tied with Van Halen). “As we wrote the songs, they showed me that they were all related to each other during a very early stage,” Brent explains. “It’s one complete thought, because it’s a cohesive story. A lot of this is about me, but it’s also about Eric, Barry, and Zach. It was born from the last four years of our lives. I’ve always said, ‘You’ve got to fall in a hole to figure out how to get out of it.’ We start off at the bottom. This person fights to build back up, realizes he or she isn’t perfect, accepts that nothing in this world is just handed over, and unlocks the resolve to take everything on. You’ll see this shift and change as it progresses down the tracklist. Finally, the character becomes confident again. It’s meant to be listened to from beginning to end. We wanted to do something that wasn’t traditional.” The writing for started taking place during the Threat To Survival Tour. Along the way, Brent found himself in a dark and bad place. This helped to stimulate the writing process and provide some of the inspiration for self-recovery and the catalyst for the writing process of Attention Attention. “In order to make something truly and purely Shinedown, we had to talk about what we know, which is each other,” he admits. “I’ve had to battle certain situations, when it comes to substance abuse and addiction. That reared its ugly head. I basically had fallen from grace, because I’m not perfect. I had to pull myself together and build myself back up. I

wouldn’t have been able to do that if it wasn’t for these three other gentlemen. So, I wrote about it all. This is probably the most truthful thing I’ve done in the last decade. I have a tattoo on the top of my left hand that says, ‘Your pain is a gift.’ That’s how I feel. It’s what made me who I am.” “From a lyrical standpoint, I knew what the story was,” says Eric. “Brent was so open and honest. I grew up listening to a lot of Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, and I love that cinematic element. Brent’s lyrics give you visuals, but the music can to. That was the basis for this.” The album also produced a first for Eric. The band knew that they had to produce this album themselves. They felt they knew the direction it needed to take, so Eric took to the helm and produced and engineered the album himself for the first time. The band went to work at Eric’s own Ocean Industries Studios in Charleston, SC. It was there were Eric expanded the band’s vision for the album and expanded the band’s sound for this groundbreaking piece. “We knew that we probably wouldn’t be able to get an outsider to come in and make this the way we wanted to,” says Brent. “It had to be Eric. He did an unbelievable job.” “I didn’t want it to feel safe,” adds Eric. “I wanted it to feel dangerous and real. My goal is always to try create something that will perk people’s ears up when they hear it and naturally draw attention to itself. We had to
Through the cacophony of rhythms and roaring guitars comes the thunderous refrain, “I was sent to warn you the devil’s in the next room.” “It’s the beginning of the story, but it’s also a way to come back and make sure the rock ‘n’ roll community understands that we haven’t abandoned them by any stretch of the imagination,” the frontman grins. “It’s a very universal song, because of its intensity. It’s all about being terrified and afraid. You have to accept the fact you can’t pretend you’re not scared. The only way to get stronger is to respect that certain situations are terrifying. The devil might be you. You need to learn how to readjust and get out of your own way.” “Get Up” is a very special song for the band as well. It is a message about empathy,
go digging in the dirt, searching, and finding. From the beginning, I had a scope of what this record could be. Songs can guide you and let you know how they want to sound and what they want to be. I wanted to shake things up as much as possible. I think we achieved that.” When the band introduced the first single off the album, as well as the opening song, “Devil” to the world, it created quite a stir. Right off the bat, it earned the band a nomination for iHeart Radio’s Music Award for Rock Song of the Year (in addition to a nomination for Rock Artist of the Year).
compassion and human connection, offering hope and encouragement in the face of personal struggles of any kind. It is a beautiful, vulnerable motivational anthem written between two friends who know what it is to struggle and is now speaking to the world about the importance of extending a hand to one another when needed. Brent assures, “Take it from me, you’re not the only one— who can’t see straight. If you are ever in doubt, don’t sell yourself short, you might be bulletproof. Hard to move mountains when you’re paralyzed, but you gotta try.”
On “The Human Radio,” Eric enlisted the help of his sisters and his mother to form a choir for the song. This gave the band a sound that they had never had before, and yet it also contains the energetic formula to get stadiums of people on their feet. “The world is calling to the person in the room as a reminder that there are other people outside fighting for survival, truth, and just to stay alive,” he goes on. “The human radio is your heartbeat. It’s an undivided song and a symbol of the human spirit.” “Brilliant” closes out Attention Attention with a gallop of guitars, screeching leads, and an intense vocal crescendo. It concludes on an inspiring proclamation, “It’s my day to be brilliant!” “That song holds a lot of weight with me,” he states. “It’s designed to hit you like a flood of emotion. In the story, the person stands up. It’s time to get moving. That means literally run for your life. It’s the moment the individual becomes fearless.” With Attention Attention Shinedown feels that they have definitely started off a new chapter in the evolution of the band, something that will set them apart from their contemporaries, along with a renewed belief in themselves and the band itself. “I want this to feel like a journey,” concludes Eric. “I hope it catches listeners’ attention. Throughout the process of listening to it, the hair on their arms stands up and they become invested in this creation. That’s what I would love for people to take away.” “I want everyone to know we will always go to the next level,” Brent leaves off. “There’s no ceiling. We’ll continue to push ourselves not only as musicians, but as songwriters and as people. I feel like this is a record the world needs right now. It’s about celebrating the will we all have inside of us. To me, this band means giving up is not an option. That’s why we never say ‘Goodbye’; we say, ‘Until next time.’”

Ronnie Milsap Performs at The Arena Theatre Legendary Country crooner, Ronnie Milsap will be bringing his “76 For 76 Tour” to Houston’s Arena Theater on Friday, June 21st. Ronnie’s on the road now celebrating his 76th Birthday. In fact, it’s kind of a double celebration as not only does Ronnie celebrate his birthday, but he’s also celebrating the release of his new album of duets, entitled Ronnie Milsap: The Duets. The album features a collection of many of the singer’s best-known tunes featuring a country music who’s who, including fellow Hall of Famers George Strait, Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson as well as Kacey Musgraves, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Little Big Town, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons and newcomer Jesse Key. Of special note are collaborations with the late Leon Russell and the final recorded performance by the late Troy Gentry of duo Montgomery Gentry. “When you have a singer’s singer like Kacey Musgraves inside ‘There’s No Getting Over Me,’ or Luke Bryan bringing his whole heart to ‘Stranger in My House,’ let alone a good friend like Willie doing a brand new Mike Reid song or Dolly asking if she can write a verse to ‘Smoky Mountain Rain’ to make it ours, well, that’s all you can ever ask of the songs,” says the six-time Grammy recipient. “Mine have not only done me well, they’ve made a lot of people I love happy, too.” No country singer had as smooth a touch as Ronnie Milsap. Blending country and soul so elegantly it could often appeal to a pop audience — and it did: “(There’s) No Gettin’ Over Me” went all the way to number five on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1981 — Milsap also had deep roots in soul. Long before he was a fixture on the country charts — during his prime, he racked up 35 number one hits — Milsap cracked the R&B charts with a version of Ashford & Simpson’s “Never Had It So Good,” and that familiarity with rhythm & blues was apparent throughout his work. Nevertheless, his strength lay in taking it easy, a quality evident on “Pure Love,” his breakthrough number one in 1974. Arriving just after Charlie Rich brought a similar country-soul synthesis into the upper reaches of the charts, “Pure Love” rocketed to number one on Billboard’s country charts, followed to that position by “Please Don’t Tell Me How the Story Ends” — a one-two punch that turned the singer into a star. Milsap sustained that stardom for nearly two decades, remaining a fixture in the charts by subtly, slyly adapting to the times: he borrowed some of the urbane slickness of Urban Cowboy at the dawn of the ’80s and happily made videos during the peak of MTV. As he entered his mature phase, he capitalized on a nostalgic streak, remaking rock & roll chestnuts in the mid-’80s, thereby setting himself up to ease into the oldies circuit once the hits dried up in the early ’90s. Despite relying on his old hits, Milsap never entirely stopped recording, resurfacing every decade or so for a splashy comeback along the lines of 2006’s My Life, and earning an induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2014. Music drew Ronnie to the clubs. After a spell playing with the Atlanta-based R&B combo the Dimensions, during which time he released the single “Total Disaster” on Princess Records in 1963, Milsap was hired as the keyboardist for J.J. Cale’s touring band. In 1965, he signed with Scepter Records, who put out “Never Had It So Good” that year. Co-written by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, “Never Had It So Good” became Milsap’s first charting hit, reaching 19 on Billboard’s R&B chart; its flip, “Let’s Go Get Stoned” — also written by Ashford & Simpson — was soon popularized by Ray Charles. Milsap stayed with Scepter through 1968, releasing a total of six singles, but none of them came close to replicating the impact of his debut 45 for the label. The Country Music Association would name Milsap Male Vocalist of the Year in 1976 and 1977, a sign of his runaway popularity in the late ’70s. Between 1974’s “(I’d Be) A Legend in My Time” and 1979’s “Nobody Likes Sad Songs,” he hit the top of the Billboard country charts ten times, with “Daydreams About Night Things” (1975), “(I’m A) Stand By My Woman Man” (1976), “It Was Almost Like a Song” (1977), and “Only One Love in My Life” (1978) spending multiple weeks in the pole position. “It Was Almost Like a Song” became his first single to crack the pop Top 40, climbing all the way to number 16 while reaching seven on the Adult Contemporary chart. It was a harbinger of what was to come
in the first half of the ’80s. Liberty released only one album from Milsap before he left for Capitol Nashville. There, he re-recorded his hits as Sings His Best Hits for Capitol Records in 1996. For the next few years, Milsap worked on the oldies circuit, finally making his return to the studio with the Image Entertainment-released Just for a Thrill, a collection of standards, in 2004. He returned to RCA in 2006 for My Life, an album designed as comeback to the country mainstream; it reached 46 on Billboard’s Album Charts, his first placement there since 1991. Three years later, Milsap delivered Then Sings My Soul, his first collection of gospel and inspirational material; it peaked at 19 on the Country charts and eight on the Christian charts. Bigger Picture released Country Again in 2011, but his next heavily promoted release was Summer Number Seventeen, a collection of oldies covers which appeared on Sony/ Legacy in 2014. Following Gospel Greats in 2016, Milsap released The Duets, a 2019 collection that paired him with old friends like Willie Nelson and new stars like Kacey Musgraves.

Train and The Goo Goo Dolls Perform at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on June 28th!
TRAIN Columbia Records Grammy-winning multi-platinum selling band Train is back on the road and will be in Houston this month at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on June 28th. The band is celebrating being on the road for more than 25 years, and the release of their new Greatest Hits album. Hitting the road with Train for their “Summer Tour 2019” are the Goo Goo Dolls, and Allen Stone. Train’s Greatest Hits contains 16 of Train’s favorite chart-topping songs, including “Drops of Jupiter,” “Calling All Angels,” and “Hey Soul Sister” among 13 other fan favorites. Also included in this relase is one of lead singer Pat Monahan’s favorite songs, George Michael’s “Careless Whisper”, which features saxophonist Kenny G. Train is a multi-Grammy and Billboard Award-winning band from San Francisco, California that has had 14 songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 list since the release of their debut self-titled album. Their hits include “Drops of Jupiter,” “Hey, Soul Sister,” “Drive By,” “Play That Song,” and “Calling All Angels,” selling more than 10 million albums worldwide, more than 30 million tracks, amassing over a billion streams with multiple platinum/gold citations, and dozens of other honors. Train’s climb to the top began in San Francisco in 1994, as the original five-member band tenaciously built a loyal following leading up to their first album, released by Columbia in 1998. The tumbling wordplay of “Meet Virginia” gave them their first unlikely radio hit, and 2001’s “Drops of Jupiter” broke them to multi-platinum status thanks to the double-Grammy Award-winning title song that spent 10 months in the Top 40 and snared the Best Rock Song Grammy by beating out Coldplay and two U2 songs. The group won another Grammy in 2011 for their global hit “Hey Soul Sister,” the No. 1 bestselling smash and most downloaded single of 2010 from their multi-platinum album “Save Me, San Francisco.” Next was 2012’s “California 37,” which launched the hit “Drive By,” reaching the Top 10 in 13 countries. They’ve sold more than 10 million albums worldwide, more than 30 million tracks, with multiple platinum/gold Page 6 - Music News June 2019
citations, including three Grammy Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, and dozens of other honors. In 2014, the band’s seventh studio album, “Bulletproof Picasso,” debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard Top 200 and earned rave reviews. Following a well-received holiday album in 2015, “Christmas in Tahoe,” which brings their signature sound to holiday classics as well as several original songs, the band released their eighth studio album, “A Girl, a Bottle, a Boat,” via Columbia Records in 2017, which spawned the lead single “Play That Song.” The track went platinum in four countries, including the U.S., hit the Top 5 on the U.S. iTunes chart, the Top 10 on Hot AC radio, charted on the Adult Top 40, and holds almost 70 million streams on Spotify alone. Train’s “Greatest Hits” album was just released today. The collection and epic nationwide tour will celebrate 20 years of beloved music and hits. The album pulls together 16 fan-favorites, plus a special cover of one of frontman Pat Monahan’s favorite songs, George Michael’s “Careless Whisper.” Their version features world-renowned saxophonist Kenny G, and the music video for the cover (embedded below) features Sexy Sax Man and Richard Karn (“Home Improvement’s” Al Borlan). “I have avoided a ‘greatest hits’ record for a long time. I’ve always thought of those records as a way of saying, ‘Welp, it was fun while it lasted,’ and that stressed me out. We live in a new music world now, though, and having people be able to find songs they love faster and easier seems like a great idea,” Monahan said. “We’re proud and excited that this is the list of songs that built the band for 25 years. Hope they take you to as many great memories as they take us.” Monahan partakes in other ventures outside of music with his Drops of Jupiter wine portfolio. Proceeds from the wine go to Family House, a San Francisco charity that supports families of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Train’s 2016 project, “Does Led Zeppelin II,” a cover album in tribute of their favorite band, saw 100 percent of the band’s proceeds going to Family House.
GOO GOO DOLLS Also on tour with Train is the Grammy nominated band Goo Goo Dolls. Goo Goo Dolls uphold an unbreakable connection to countless fans. Their influence has been fortified by a catalog replete with the unforgettable smashes “Name,” “Iris,” and “Slide, which were all included in the top 25 of Billboard’s “Top 100 Pop Songs 1992–2012” chart, as well as numerous other hits such as “Black Balloon,” “So Alive” and many more. To date, they’ve sold 12 million albums worldwide, earned four GRAMMY® Award nominations, and made history by notching 14 Top 10 hits at Hot AC—”the most of any artist in history.” Notably, “Iris” dominated the Hot 100 Pop Chart at #1 for 18 straight weeks. Among eleven full-length records, A Boy Named Goo [1995] went double-platinum, Dizzy Up The Girl went quadruple-platinum, and Gutterflower [2002] and Let Love In [2006] both went gold as Something for the Rest of Us [2010] and Magnetic [2013] bowed in the Top 10 of the Billboard Top 200. 2016’s Boxes attracted the praise of People and Huffington Post as Noisey, Consequence of Sound, and more featured them. In 2017, the You Should Be Happy EP spawned another anthem in the form of “Use Me,” which quickly generated 3 million-plus Spotify streams. Their music has been covered by everyone from Taylor Swift to Leona Lewis. Additionally, they’ve performed for millions at sold out shows around the world. That connection grows stronger in 2018 with the 20th anniversary tour celebrating Dizzy Up The Girl. Goo Goo Dolls will be releasing their brand new live album The Audience is That Way (The Rest of the Show) [Live], Vol. 2 on November 23rd, 2018 via Warner Bros. Records. The band is currently in the studio working on their 12th studio album. The multi-platinum-selling, Grammy-nominated Goo Goo Dolls? are one of the most globally respected and influential forces in popular music, selling more than 12 million albums. Formed in Buffalo, New York in 1986, guitarist/vocalist John Rzeznik and bassist/vocalist Robby Takac spent their first decade traversing North America in a van and bringing their raucous brand of melodic
punk rock to college kids and winning over small but enthusiastic crowds of fans. They released a series of albums before breaking through commercially with their fifth, 1995’s “A Boy Named Goo,” followed by 1998’s quadruple platinum “Dizzy Up the Girl,” which produced five Top 10 singles and sold nearly six million copies worldwide. Goo Goo Dolls scored 14 Top 10 radio hits (more than any other artist in the history of the Hot AC format), including “Name,” “Slide,” and “Iris,” the latter spending nearly 12 straight months on the Billboard charts and holding the No. 1 position for 17 consecutive weeks. It remains one of the biggest crossover hits in the history of popular music. The band has toured the globe countless times, performed in front of millions of fans, received numerous awards (including four Grammy nominations), and recorded and released 11 studio albums. Rzeznik has also been honored with the Songwriters Hall of Fame Hal David Starlight Award. Their latest full-length album, “Boxes,” was lauded by the likes of People, Huffington Post, and Metro, who call the album a “step forward in the band’s extensive repertoire.” “Boxes” features the hit “So Alive,” which the Goo Goo Dolls performed everywhere from “The Today Show” and “The Talk” to “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “Conan.” On May 12, 2017, they released a five-song EP, “You Should Be Happy,” which has four original songs and a remix of the title track “Boxes” from their 2016 album. Marking the 20th anniversary of their most successful album, “Dizzy Up the Girl,” they embarked on a commemorative tour starting on Sept. 30, playing the album in its entirety. Goo Goo Dolls will be releasing their brand new live album “The Audience Is That Way (The Rest of the Show) [Live], Vol. 2” on Nov. 23 via Warner Bros. Records. The band is currently in the studio working on their 12th studio album.

Slaughter Performs at Warehouse Live June 14 Slaughter returns to Houston this month for a special show at Warehouse Live on June 14th, along with opening acts, Lynch Mob, and Johnny Solinger of Skid Row. Those of you may remember that Slaughter was formed out of the ashes of once was the Vinnine Vincent Invasion. Former Vinnie Vincent Invasion members Mark Slaughter and bassist Dana Strum formed Slaughter with guitarist Tim Kelly and drummer Blas Elias in 1988. Their metal style’s main focus is on catchy melodies and Mark Slaughter’s impressive vocal range, particularly his somewhat nasal falsetto. Their first two studio albums sold quite well. The group did quite well throughout the 1990s, and on February 5, 1998, Kelly died in an auto accident. His final recordings appeared a year later on Eternal Live. Still, the band managed to regroup without him, releasing Back to Reality in 1999 with new guitarist Jeff Blando. Since then, Blas Elias has gone his own way and he has been replaced by Zoltan Chaney. Slaughter’s debut album Stick It to Ya had three singles released that hit the Billboard Hot 100: the hit “Fly to the Angels” (US#19), and the moderate hits “Up All Night” (US#27) and “Spend My Life” (US#39). During this time, a song was released from the soundtrack to the film Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey. That song, titled “Shout It Out”, was accompanied by a music video but failed to make the US Hot 100. In 1992, the band released their second album, titled The Wild Life. It reached number eight on the US Billboard Top 200 Album Chart and was certified gold, but didn’t produce any Top 40 hits on the US Hot 100. The only single to reach the Hot 100 was the first single “Real Love” (US#69). The band planned to record their third album in early 1994. However, due to some setbacks for the band, the album was delayed. The delayed album was completed in February 1994 and the first single “Searchin’” was released. However, due to Chrysalis Records absorption into EMI Records, Slaughter was dropped from EMI. The band subsequently signed with CMC International, a new label at the time that signed many hard rock and metal bands in the face of the new grunge popularity. The label had major distribution through BMG. In 1995, Slaughter released the album Fear No Evil. In 1997, Revolution was released. The album featured a more eclectic and psychedelic sound. On February 5, 1998, tragedy struck when guitarist Tim Kelly was killed in an auto accident in the Arizona desert. This deeply affected the group, but they were committed to continue with the band. Dave Marshall briefly performed as a touring guitarist for Slaughter in Japan. In 1998, they hired Jeff Blando as Kelly’s replacement and began working on their next album. A live album titled Eternal Live was released featuring some of the band’s last performances with Kelly. In 1999, they released the album Back to Reality, featuring Blando as the new guitarist. Blando was previously in Left For Dead and Saigon Kick. Slaughter continues to play many rock package tours with other acts that saw prominence during the glam era of the 1980s and early 1990s. During the summer of 1999, while on the “Rock Never Stops Tour” (which included Ted
Nugent and Night Ranger), Slaughter saw some of their previous singles on compilation albums. The VH-1 album “Power Ballads” included “Fly To The Angels”; “Up All Night” was included on Rhino Records “Hard Hitters”. In April 2004, Slaughter released a DVD-A entitled Then and Now that features 12 songs and 50 rare photos of the band over the years. Slaughter also released a DVD that features all of the music videos and behind the scenes footage during the 2004 season. Slaughter continues to tour to this day and will be in Houston this month.

Uli Jon Roth Performs at The Concert Pub North Former Scorpions guitarist Uli Jon Roth performed this past month at The Concert Pub North for a devout group of fans this night. Before they main set start, Uli put on a smaller set that featured him accompanying a small orchestra that was presented in the form of a projection, along with backing tracks of the musicians. While it may have seemed a little strange, believe me, this is no easy feat. Accompanying a pre-recorded score requires a great deal of talent on concentration, and Uli did a fantastic job. For Uli’s main set, he utilized his full band and the show was extraordinary. He was unbelievable. Almost the entire crowd was on their feet and huddled up to the stage to get a few of every move he made. It really was awe inspiring. Uli keep the folks glued to every moment of his performance as he performed both songs from his solo career as well as songs from his early days with the Scorpions. And although all good things must come to an end, Uli good have performed another two hours if the crowd had their way. Yeah folks, this was really one helluva show. For those of you who would like to relive a few moments of this night, we have a couple of videos from the show posted on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television. You can start watching anytime you want now.
MUSIC NEWS Kaleidoscope Project Performs at The Jailhouse Saloon Tonight we’ve dropped by The Jailhouse Saloon to check in on The Kaleidoscope Project. We’ve been watching this band for some time now, and although they’ve been through some changes over the last couple of years, they’ve done nothing but improve. This project is spearheaded by an extraordinary guitarist named Sadie Williams. This girl is phenomenal. She can perform anything that’s put in front of her. I can only imagine what she’ll be like in another 10 years. I’m sure it will be unbelievable. The band focuses their song selection on classic rock and they do a damn good job at performing them. Every time we’ve seen them perform, the crowd just loves them and this night at The Jailhouse Saloon the crowd was going wild. Yeah folks, this is one our favorite bands. If you get a chance, make sure you see these kids perform. They may be young, but they perform as if they’ve been doing it for 20 years. Kaleidoscope Project is Zachary Kole Johnson (Vocals/Guitar), Sadie Williams (Guitar), Katherine “Kat” O’Brien (Bass), and Nicolas Schultz (Drums). We’ve got a couple of videos posted right now on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television from this gig at The Jailhouse Saloon for you to check out right now, so tune in and start watching them right now. Here they are performing “Life In The Fast Lane” by The Eagles and “Beast of Burden” by The Rolling Stones. Also be sure to check out The Jailhouse Saloon any time you’re up in Old Town Spring. Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit Along With Father John Misty Perform at White Oak Music Hall on June 28th! Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit will spend the month of June on the road with Father John Misty. The tour begins in California with dates in San Diego on June 6, Santa Barbara on June 7 and Berkeley on June 8. They will be performing in Houston at White Oak Music Hall June 28th on the lawn. On his acclaimed fourth studio album, God’s Favorite Customer, Father John Misty talked about meeting Isbell in a hotel. On the track “Mr. Tillman”, he sings, “Jason Isbell’s here as well and he seemed a little worried about you.” Before the album’s release last June, Isbell joked about the real-life chance encounter that inspired the line on Twitter, noting that “it seemed inconsequential at the time.” Now, however, it seems possible the unplanned meeting set the stage for the duo’s upcoming joint performances. Father John Misty is currently supporting God’s Favorite Customer, his acclaimed release from 2018. Written largely in New York between summer 2016 and winter 2017, the album reflects on the experience of being caught between the vertigo of heartbreak and the manic throes of

freedom. God’s Favorite Customer reveals a bittersweetness and directness in Tillman’s songwriting, without sacrificing any of his wit or taste for the absurd. Four-time Grammy Award winner, Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit are touring in support of their album The Nashville Sound (winner of Grammys for Best Americana and Best American Roots Song for “If We Were Vampires”) and the highly praised live set Live From The Ryman. Isbell has become one the most respected songwriters of his generation, with a penchant for articu-
lating some of our deepest human emotions and creating poignant narratives inspired by the working class. Together with the mighty 400 Unit – Derry deBorja (keyboards), Chad Gamble (drums), Jimbo Hart (bass), Sadler Vaden (guitar) and Amanda Shires (fiddle) – they have become one of the strongest live acts on the road today. Written largely in New York between Summer 2016 and Winter 2017, Josh Tillman’s fourth Father John Misty LP, God’s Favorite Customer, reflects on the experience of being caught between the vertigo of heartbreak and the manic throes of freedom. God’s Favorite Customer reveals a bittersweetness and directness in Tillman’s songwriting, without sacrificing any of his wit or taste for the absurd. From “Mr. Tillman,” where he trains his lens on his own misadventure, to the cavernous pain of estrangement in “Please Don’t Die,” Tillman plays with perspective throughout to alternatingly hilarious and devastating effect. “We’re Only People (And There’s Not Much Anyone Can Do About That)” is a meditation on our inner lives and the limitations we experience in our attempts to give and receive love. It stands in solidarity with the title track, which examines the ironic relationship between forgiveness and sin. Together, these are songs that demand to know either real love or what comes after, and as the album progresses, that entreaty leads to discovering the latter’s true stakes. God’s Favorite Customer was produced by Tillman and recorded with Jonathan Rado, Dave Cerminara, and Trevor Spencer. The album features contributions from Haxan Cloak, Natalie Mering of Weyes Blood, longtime collaborator Jonathan Wilson, and members of Misty’s touring band. After spending six years with Southern rock outfit Drive-By Truckers, singer/ guitarist Jason Isbell left the group in 2007 to pursue a solo career. Isbell had already honed his songwriting skills during his tenure with the Truckers, and he funneled those talents into Sirens of the Ditch, a bluesy, punk-infused lesson in guitar tones and
Southern swagger that marked his solo debut in summer 2007. While Isbell took a more introspective approach on his next two albums, 2009’s Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit and 2011’s Here We Rest, he enjoyed a critical and commercial breakthrough with 2013’s Southeastern, a lean but compelling set written and recorded in the wake of Isbell coming to terms with his alcoholism. Newly sober and re-energized, Isbell began attracting a significantly larger audience for his concerts, and his subsequent studio albums Something More Than Free (2015) and The Nashville Sound (2017) reaffirmed his status as one of the most celebrated songwriters on the roots music scene. The Nashville Sound is the sixth studio album by Jason Isbell, credited with the 400 Unit. It was produced by Dave Cobb, who also produced Isbell’s previous two records: 2013’s Southeastern and 2015’s Something More Than Free and was released on June 16, 2017. The Nashville Sound again features Isbell’s band The 400 Unit and is the first album since Here We Rest in 2011 to give the band top billing alongside him. The album earned Isbell his first CMA Award nomination. It was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2017 ceremony. It won Best Americana Album at the 2018 Grammy Awards and International Album of the Year at the 2018 UK Americana Awards. Additionally, “If We Were Vampires” won the Grammy for Best American Roots Song. The Nashville Sound debuted at number four on the US Billboard 200 with 54,000 album-equivalent units, of which 51,000 were pure album sales. It is Isbell’s highest chart placement on that chart, having previously peaked at number six with Something More Than Free (2015). The album has sold 152,500 copies in the US as of December 2018. The single ‘If We Were Vampires’ peaked at No. 29 on the Billboard Triple A chart.

Cody Canada & The Departed Performs at The Last Concert Cafe We’re at The Last Concert Cafe this night to see Cody Canada and The Departed. Cody Canada and the Departed is an American Rock/Alternative Country band. The band was formed in 2011 by Cody Canada, the former lead vocalist and guitarist for Cross Canadian Ragweed after the band broke up in 2010. He was joined by former Ragweed bass guitar player Jeremy Plato, Texas blues rocker Seth James on guitar and co-lead vocals along with drummer Dave Bowen and Steve Littleton on keyboard. The band currently consists of Canada (guitars and vocals), Plato (bass guitar and vocals), and drummer Eric Hansen. Cody and the guys have built up quite a reputation for putting on a spectacular show and let me tell you, it certainly is the truth. They were spectacular. The crowd went crazy and folks were dancing and singing along with the band up by the stage all night long. I don’t think i’ve seen that many people at The Last Concert Cafe like that in a quite a while.... well, maybe a week or two... they always have a fine turnout there, but no doubt this show was special. The people were lovin’ it. The band made a real evening of enjoyment out of it by performing songs from all their albums. In fact, the show turned into a bit of a sing-a-long at times with their fans jumping in to help the band on their vocals. It was certainly a lot of fun and it sounded great too. The Last Concert has added some new speakers to their sound system that just sound phenomenal. They’ve just added the new IS7 Line Array by Adamson Systems to their arsenal of sound and they just scream. It’s definitely one of the finest sounding venues in Houston. Congratulations goes out to The Last Concert Cafe for a great show and great sound. Now sit back and tune into HMNTV Houston Music News Television to catch a bit of the show from this night.

The Riverside Boys Perform at Rock ‘N’ Ray’s The Riverside Boys made the trip from Edinburg, TX down to Rock ‘N’ Rays to show just what they can do, and they did a damn good job of it. Their combination of old school Rock N Roll really hit the spot. The band was the hit of the night as they performed songs from The Rolling Stones (“It’s All Over Now”), Fleetwood Mac / Santana (“Black Magic Woman”), Tom Petty (“Last Dance With Mary Jane”), Cream (“Sunshine Of Your Love”), and a lot more! In additon to that they also performed some fine original pieces. These guys really show a promising future and would really give some of the local Houston bands a run for their money. If you want to check ‘em out, they’ll be back at Rock ‘N’ Ray’s again this month for a gig on June 21st. We definitely recommend that you check these guys out.

White Room Performs at Rock ‘N’ Ray’s
White Room returned again to Rock ‘N’ Ray’s this last month to showcase some more of their skills at Rock N Roll. This band is one of the club’s favorite attractions, and it’s no wonder. These guys really know how to rock and perform some great covers of some of our favorite songs. From Jimi Hendrix (“All Along The Watchtower”) to Robin Trower (“Day Of The Eagle”), they perform some of the heaviest songs that have rocked the airwaves along with some of the more traditional numbers from ZZ Top (“Francine”) to The Doors (“Break On Through”) to Tom Petty (“Breakdown”). They even throw in a little Neil Young (“Cinammon Girl”) when it’s called for. When it comes to Rock N Roll, these guys are inspirational and truly love what they’re doing. It really shows in their performance and their energy is truly refreshing. No wonder Ray and his wife love this band. Keep your eyes open for this band. Here’s continued on next page another band you’re going to want to check out!

“There Ain’t No Cure For The Summertime Blues” 5731 KIRBY • HOUSTON, TEXAS • 713-523-9999 Alan Haynes Performs at The Big Easy One thing is for sure about The Big Easy. The last saturday of each month you’ll find the legendary Alan Haynes on stage there. Alan has been delighting people with “The Blues” for more years than we can remember. This Austin-based musician is without a doubt one of The Big Easy favorites, not to mention to countless Houston fans. Alan’s love of the Blues is contagious and you can really tell in his performances. Alan tells us that some of his influences come from B.B. King, Albert King, and his old friend Johnny Winter (God rest his soul). Alan’s goal is to keep the Blues alive and well, and through his performances, he definitely exhibits that. Another thing that’s real cool about Alan is that he always takes to the crowds when he performs. Although he like to perform on stage, his love of performing in the thick of his fans takes precedence. He truly looks happier performing in the middle of a crowd of people. In fact, here’s a picture of Alan strolling through the floor of The Big Easy doing his thing. Keep it up Alan, we love ya!

Hello Seahorse Performs at Rockefellers
It’s another cool night at Rockefellers and onstage right now is Hello Seahorse from Mexico City, Mexico. This alternative pop band was formed in Mexico City in 2005. The band has 5 studio albums and an EP to their credit right now along with a live album that was just released this last year titled “Hello Seahorse! 10 Anos (En Vivo). The band has won the “La Zona” award in 2009 at the MTV Video Music Awards Latinoamerica, and they also were nominated for the best alternative song at the Latin Grammy Awards in 2009 as well. The band has really built up a following in their native country of Mexico, as well as the Infinite Record United States and has shared the stage with bands like The Beastie boys, Jarvis Cocker, and The Killers. Their show this night at Convention Rockefellers was nothing less than spectacular, and we can hardly wai Houston’s record to see them again. Troublemaker Performs at The Jailhouse Saloon Well, we’re back at The Jailhouse Saloon again this month to see another one of our favorite bands, Troublemaker. Troublemaker is the great state of Texas’ longest running female fronted band. Spearheaded by monster guitarist, Kat James, this band has been delighting Texas audiences for over 30 years. Also on guitar is Robert Hampton. If you have a guitar that needs some work done, give Robert a call and he’ll set you up. On bass is Tony Hiebel. Tony’s also a monster bassist. He definitely keeps that low end thundering. Rounding things out is “The Beard,” aka Mel Gilmore. In fact, that’s another reason that we’re here tonight. It’s “The Beard’s” birthday. (Happy Birthday Mel). Yeah, these guys were really jazzed tonight and putting on one of the best shows I’ve ever seen them do. Troublemaker has four albums to their credit right now and they are now back in the studio working on another one. And that’s even another reason we’re here tonight. We’ve got something really special for you here on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television. We’ve got the World Premiere advance sneak peak of the band’s upcoming hit song, “Waco.” Here’s one powerful song for you to check out. Kat’s husband Brian tells us that he’s seen grown bikers brought to tears after hearing this song. It’s definitely a feather in the cap for this band, so sit back and enjoy “Waco”, courtesy of of Kat James and Troublemaker. Check it out now!!

Rob Thomas Performs at Smart Financial Centre
Multiple-GRAMMY® Award-winning singer/songwriter Rob Thomas has announced the second leg of his North American Chip Tooth Tour, supporting his fourth solo album Chip Tooth Smile (available now via Emblem/Atlantic Records). The 18 new dates will kick off August 16th in Port Chester, NY for a second night at Capitol Theatre and continue through end of September, featuring special guest Max Frost (select shows only). The tour’s first leg is set to kick off May 28th in Red Bank, NJ at the Count Basie Center for the Arts and will continue through early August.l He will be performing in the Houston area at the Smart Financial Centre on June 28th. Debuting at #3 on the Billboard Top Album Sales chart, Chip Tooth Smile has been met with an outpouring of critical acclaim since release last month. “Rob Thomas is an expert at his craft” raved Variety, while Forbes echoed “’Chip Tooth Smile’ is vintage Thomas – smart songwriting, excellent pop/rock craftsmanship, eclectic and at times moving, at times, fun, and always solid.” The 12-track collection features production from Butch Walker (Panic! At The Disco, P!nk) and Benny Blanco (Ed Sheeran), perfectly complimenting Thomas’ long-acclaimed songwriting talent. Chip Tooth Smile was heralded by lead single “One Less Day (Dying Young),” which is continuing to see success at Hot AC radio, charting in the top 15 following recent performances on ABC’s Good Morning America and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Rolling Stone described the song as “thunderous, life-affirming” and “an impassioned vocal performance,” while Billboard declared it to be “one of the boldest singles released so far this year.” The album also includes standout tracks “Timeless,” inspired by classic songs of the 80s, and “I Love It,” which is currently being used nationwide for the 2019 NBA Playoffs. Rob Thomas is one of the most distinctive artists of this or any other era – a gifted vocalist, spellbinding performer, and acclaimed songwriter known worldwide as lead singer and primary composer with Matchbox Twenty as well as for his multi-platinum certified solo work and chart-topping collaborations with other artists. Among his countless hits are solo classics like “Lonely No More,” “This Is How A Heart Breaks,” and “Streetcorner Symphony,” Matchbox Twenty favorites including “Push,” “3AM,”
“If You’re Gone,” and “Bent,” and of course “Smooth,” his 3x RIAA platinum certified worldwide hit collaboration with Santana which celebrates it’s 20th anniversary this year. Thomas earned three GRAMMY® Awards for his role as co-writer and vocalist on “Smooth,” which topped Billboard’s “Hot 100” for an astounding 12 consecutive weeks and spent 58 total weeks on the chart, the #1 song in Billboard’s “Top Hot 100 Rock Songs” chart history and #2 “Hot 100” song of all time. As if that weren’t enough, “Smooth” was declared the all-time #1 song on Billboard’s “Adult Pop Songs” radio airplay chart, the #1 song of the rock era based on chart performance on Billboard’s Hot 100, and recently declared to still hold the spot as the second most successful song of all time by Billboard. In 2004, Thomas was the first artist to be honored with the Songwriters Hall of Fame’s prestigious “Hal David Starlight Award,” created to recognize a composer in the early years of his or her career that has already made a lasting impact. He has won numerous BMI and ASCAP Awards, and twice earned the “Songwriter of the Year” crown from both Billboard and BMI. Overall, Thomas has contributed to sales of more than 80 million records. Thomas made his solo debut with 2005’s platinum certified …Something To Be and immediately made history as the first album by a male artist from a rock or pop group to ever debut at # 1 on the Billboard 200. Thomas’ sophomore solo album, 2009’s Cradlesong, marked still another milestone, generating two #1 singles in “Her Diamonds” and “Someday.” Billboard chart history was made once again, with Thomas tying P!nk for the most #1 Adult Top 40 hits by a solo artist as well becoming the first male solo artist to score multiple chart-toppers at the format. In 2012, Matchbox Twenty returned with their first all-new album in a decade, North. Fueled by the hit singles, “She’s So Mean,” “Overjoyed,” and “Our Song,” North proved a landmark for the band, their first ever #1 debut and Billboard 200 charttopper. Thomas’ third solo album, 2015’s internationally acclaimed The Great Unknown, had a top 10 debut on the SoundScan/Billboard 200 upon its release and featured hit singles “Hold On Forever” and “Pieces.” A charismatic, engaging, and indefatigable live performer,
Thomas has spent much of the past two decades on the road, fronting massive world treks with Matchbox Twenty and on his own as well as a series of intimate acoustic tours. Thomas is also a dedicated philanthropist, establishing Sidewalk Angels Foundation with his wife Marisol Thomas in 2003. The organization is dedicated to providing critically needed funds and support to over 20 no-kill animal shelters and animal rescues, across the country, that help to fight for the rights and fair treatment of those with no voice. The Hollywood Spotlight By Hollywood Steve Rangel jure up seems to fall short of doing it proper justice. Such is the case with “Achilles”, the outstanding new offering from Londale. This talented quintet features Willy Collins (vocals, acoustic guitar), Joshua Lee Hammond (lead guitar, piano), Alex Lambert (rhythm guitar), Cory Martin (bass guitar), and Gabe Bravo (drums and percussion). The seven tracks on “Achilles” com-
prise something of a concept album, each examining love and its unpredictable aftermath from a particular vantage point. Londale certainly has an indie rock sound, but it’s not that simple. They have a soothing 80’s vibe
that I would associate with R.E.M. or The Cure. U2 and The Police also come to mind. But the production (wisely) lacks the excessive studio gloss that was so prevalent during that era. The result is a modernized reimagining of that sound, one that adds a bit more grit and passion. And it works spectacularly in this case, as it is an approach that presents this heartfelt material in its best possible light. Recorded at Southwing Audio by Chris Kritikos and produced by the Band themselves (with mastering by Dave McNair) “Achilles” may be hard to describe, but it is exceedingly easy on the ears. Give it a spin and I’m sure you’ll agree.
Treynwrek “Rule Of Thirds” Houston power trio Treynwrek have been one of the most fiercely original bands on the Houston scene for a number of years now, as well as one of the most intriguing. Their indie sound was infused with a healthy dose of Texas blues, but one always had the sense that their musical itinerary was intentionally left blank in favor of a “we’ll know it when we get there” approach. Well, they got there. In an era when it seems that every musician is involved in multiple projects simultaneously, few bands stay together long enough to genuinely evolve, grow together as players, and find their true sound. “Rule Of Thirds” is proof positive that Treynwrek have indeed accomplished this increasingly rare feat, with impressive results. “High energy” has always been an accurate description of this act, but this time around, they have redefined the term. It’s quickly evident from the two opening tracks “Bad Luck” and “Space City Cowboy” (a wry nod to H-town) that the band has adopted a more progressive style. Selections such as “Metamorphosis”, “Good Bad Girl”, and “Outlaw Josey Wales” introduce a modern funk flavor ala The Red Hot Chili Peppers. I’ve always felt that Treynwrek has a touch of The Doors in them, and “Whispers On The Water” and “Maelstrom” illustrate that they still do. But nowhere is the band’s growth and progression more evident than on the fantastic “Creeper”, a lush and moody piece that is perhaps the high point of a superbly consistent album. Trey Dreyden (lead guitar/vocals), James Breaux (bass/vocals), and Tim Hutto (drums/vocaks) have stayed a difficult course. “Rule Of Thirds” is their emphatic reward for that effort.
Londale “Achilles” Over the ten-plus years that I’ve been fortunate enough to have to opportunity to write this column, I’ve learned something interesting. The better an album is, the harder it can be to describe. It’s very easy to categorize a mediocre product. But when a release is rich in depth and originality, it defies labels and doesn’t fit neatly into a specific genre. And any description I can conJune 2019
