Uli Jon Roth Celebrates Triple Anniversary at Concert Pub North Uli Jon Roth the German guitarist, known for his solo work, his unique ‘Sky Guitar’ and his time in the 70s on classic Scorpions records will be performing this month in Houston at The Concert Pub North and bringing his “Triple Anniversary World Tour” there on May 8th. Uli has been soaring high and touring in support of the Scorpions album classics, ‘Scorpions Revisited’ as well as the album, ‘Tokyo Tapes Revisited - Live In Japan’ , which contain his work with Scorpions. These are great albums that have been ignored by the Scorpions in the last couple of decades, as they evolved into a more commercial direction with their music. “Triple Anniversary World Tour” starts with celebrating the fact he has been performing on stages for over 50 years now. But it’s also the 40th anniversary of the epic double-live album “The Tokyo Tapes” released just after he left German metal icons the Scorpions. Recently Uli Jon Roth has been touring with additional guitarists in his band which has allowed him to stretch out and perform his songs more like they were recorded on his albums. Song that have been poping up on his concert tour include “Don’t Tell The Wind,” “The Sails of Charon,” “Electric Sun,” “Why?,” “Pictured Life,” “In Trance,” “Catch Your Train,” and “Virgin Killer.” Needless to say, these shows have been hailed as the best tour yet for Uli. It’s even been reported that his shows have stretched out close to three hours long. This is unbelievable for a man of his age. His peer counterparts only seem to stretch their shows out to 70 or 80 minutes. The Uli Jon Roth story starts out in the 1970’s when Uli fronted a band called Dawn Road. In 1973 he was asked to replace Rudolph Schenker’s brother Michael in Scorpions. Michael had left to join the band UFO, thus breaking up Scorpions. Uli agreed to join the two remaining Scorpions, Rudolf Schenker and Klaus Meine. In addition to Uli joining, he brought along three more of his fellow Dawn Road members, Achim Kirschning, Francis Buchholz, and Jurgen Rosenthal which pretty much merged the two bands together as one, while keeping the Scorpions name. During his tenure with Scorpions, they crafted five fine albums together including the groundbreaking live album, Tokyo Tapes. Released in 1974, Fly to the Rainbow was their first recording together, but they really hit their stride on the follow-ups, 1975’s In Trance and 1976’s Virgin Killer, which made them international stars and drew particular acclaim for Roth’s soloing abilities. However, musical tensions were evident on 1977’s Taken by Force. The songwriting styles between Roth and Schenker proved to be quite the opposite of each other and really gave their albums a lot of flavor to them. While Ulie leaned towards classical
music and a heavy Jimi Hendrix influence, Rudolf leaned more to a straight ahead hard rock sound, as well as a more commercial pop sound as well. After about five years, Roth found himself disatisfied with the direction that Scorpions were moving in. After a tumultuous world tour, Roth left the group in 1978, following the release of the live double album Tokyo Tapes. Tokyo Tapes went on to sell nearly one million copies and went gold in many countries. He then formed his new rock project, called Electric Sun. Electric Sun released three albums, Earthquake (1979), Fire Wind (1981), and Beyond the Astral Skies (1985). He then changed directions again. This time composing four symphonies and two concertos. He also started performing occasionaly with symphony orchestras throughout Europe. Much of Roth’s writing from the mid-’80s to the mid-’90s was in a classical style, leaving rock & roll behind altogether. For example, the 1991 piece “Aquila Suite” (later issued as part of the three-disc From Here to Eternity package) was a set of 12 etudes composed for solo piano, in the style of the Romantic era. Also in 1991, Roth was tapped by German television to direct the tribute special A Different Side of Jimi Hendrix, which also featured bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Simon Phillips, among many others. In 1993, Roth returned to German television with the Symphonic Rock for Europe special, in which he performed his first rock symphony, “Europa Ex Favilla” (plus several other pieces), backed by the Brussels Symphony Orchestra. Some of those compositions later turned up on Sky of Avalon: Prologue to the Symphonic Legends, Roth’s 1996 return to recording, which featured his new backing band Sky of Avalon. Prologue was the first of a projected four related symphonic recordings spotlighting the Sky Guitar. In 1998, Roth played his first straight-ahead rock concerts in quite some time, joining the European leg of the G3 guitar virtuoso package tour with Michael Schenker and Joe Satriani. In 2000, Roth released Transcendental Sky Guitar, a two-CD set of recent live and studio material (including selections from a special 1999 concert in Vienna) that was split into classical and rock-oriented halves. In 2003, the aptly named Metamorphosis of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons saw Roth bring composer Antonio Vivaldi’s most famous work into the world of rock-classical fusion, while 2008’s Under a Dark Sky marked a return to his Sky of Avalon project. In 2015 he released the double LP Scorpions Revisited, which saw Roth delivering a 19-track set of newly recorded personal favorites from the band’s early days. The DVD/Blu-ray Tokyo Tapes Revisited: Live in Japan followed in 2016.

ZZ Top Brings Their Texas Tour to the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion May 18th! That “little ol’ band from Texas”, that we lovingly refer to as ZZ Top will be starting their 50th Anniversary Tour in June with a World Tour that kicks off in Helsinki, Finland on June 4th. The European Tour will take them through Finland, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Netherlands, Czech Republic, France, Belgium, Austria, Spain, and Luxembourg, before it winds down at the SSE Arena Wembley in London, England on July 12th. Then the tour picks up again in August for three months of U.S. performances. However, since Texas is their home base, they have a special “Texas Tour” planned for us Texans. Their “Texas Tour” will take place in Dallas on May 17th and in Austin on May 19th. The most important date on this tour is on May 18th, when they perform at their main base of operations, Houston, Texas. So folks, mark your calendars, the most important date of this tour will take place at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on Saturday, May 18th, which is also “Armed Forces Day.” Actually, it’s the big “Texas Bash and Tour” that kicks off their “World Tour.” And for their “Texas Tour,” they’re bringing along a couple of close friends for our enjoyment, Bad Company and Cheap Trick. As you can see already, Billy, Dusty, and Frank plan on having a Texas-size Anniversary Party here in Houston! It’s going to be great seeing the guys again. The last time they performed in the Houston area was at Smart Financial Centre on September 10th of 2017. Of course, Billy did come through on his solo tour at Revention Music Center last November 9th, but it just wasn’t the same thing. It was a great show, but it definitely wasn’t ZZ TOP! So needless to say, there’s nothing like seeing Billy, Dusty, and Frank together on the same stage performing our hometown anthems. The 50th Anniversary for any band is a special occasion, but for ZZ Top, it’s much more special. Through 15 studio albums, 30million record sales, and 5 decades on the

road, they’ve kept the same lineup. Amazing. We’ve seen a lot of lineup changes in bands over the years, but ZZ Top has remained the same… unchanged in any way. As Billy puts it, “It’s been five decades, and I think we’re starting to get pretty good at this! We’re just as excited to be back in Texas this May playing our bluesy kind of rock as when started with in ’69. The beards, Frank excepted, are perhaps a bit longer, yet nothing else has changed much and we’re keeping it that way.”
Even Paul Rodgers from Bad Company is jazzed about the “Texas Tour,” as he states, “Those three Texan hombres, AKA ZZ Top, are celebrating their 50th Anniversary this year so Bad Company is going to join them and the fans to mark the occasion; hang on to your hats and heels!” Rick Nielson from Cheap Trick also chimed in on the special occasion, “ZZ Top are celebrating their 50th anniversary this years so it truly an honor that the famed “Little Ol’ Band from Texas” has asked
Cheap Trick (all of whom are longtime ZZ Top fans and musical touring friends) to be included and open for these living legends — the great Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard.” For just a brief ZZ Top history lesson, when The Moving Sidewalks finished up with their run, Billy was chomping at the bit to get something new and extraordinary going. He was looking for something completely different, so after exploring a few avenues, he teamed up with bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard, who he knew from the Dallas-based band. The American Blues. And as they say, “The Rest Is History!” The guys have really enjoyed performing the ZZ the timeless classics they’ve crafted, such as La Grange,” “Legs,” “Sharp Dressed Man,” and “Tush” since they joined forces with this lineup in 1970. The last official ZZ Top release was a live album in 2016, titled “Tonite at Midnight: Live Greatest Hits from Around the World. Their last studio album was 2012’s “La Futura”. “La Futura” was produced by Rick Rubin. The first single off the album, was “I Gotsa Get Paid.” It debuted in an advertising campaign for Jeremiah Weed Whiskey and it also appeared on the soundtrack of the film “Battleship.” The first four songs from “La Futura” made their debut on a special EP that was titled “Texicali.” Besides the 15 studio albums and sales of over 30 million albums, ZZ Top has also had six number one singles and has achieved four Gold, three Platinum, and two Multiple-Platinum awards, in addition to one Diamond Award. Also be advised, that a ZZ Top song is being played on multiple stations around the planet everyday. ZZ Top was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. Not bad for a “little ol’ band from Texas.” Be sure to mark May 18th on your calendar and plan on being out at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion for a Texas sized party with our own ZZ Top, along with close friends Bad Company and Cheap Trick.

Turnpike Troubadours Perform at White Oak Music Hall The Turnpike Troubadours will be performing in Houston this month on Friday, May 24th at White Oak Music Hall. Their last performance here was at The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in March, so this will be a great opportunity to see them up and close in a more intimate atmosphere. If Turnpike Troubadours are playing in your town, you’ll know it. A block or two from the venue, you’ll see the crowds lining up. Get closer and you’ll start to hear the music — rockin’ hard, lashed by burnin’ fiddle and guitar, maybe a little rough on the edges but with a deep-rooted soul that’s impossible to resist. And if you make it through the door, you’ll witness one of the best shows you’ll ever see. Audiences in their home state of Oklahoma and down in Texas have known this for years. It’s no longer news when they draw 5,000-plus at Billy Bob’s in Fort Worth, sell out three nights in a row at Gruene Hall or turn several hundred away at the Legendary Stubb’s Bar-B-Q in Austin. Word has spread, though: Their shows in Chicago, St. Louis and elsewhere have pulled in more than 1,000 fans. And they’ve drawn full houses at Joe’s Pub in New York and The Troubadour in L.A., among many other nightspots from coast to coast. They’ve even been picked by Playboy as one of three acts to watch — a distinction lead singer/guitarist/songwriter Evan Felker admits is “pretty bizarre” but impressive nonetheless. The band, whose name is derived from the bumpy Oklahoma toll-roads and their hard lived folk singing heroes, are proof that isolation can be the mother of originality. Cutting their teeth in roadside dance halls and honky-tonks has made a serious impact on the band’s musical style. Breaking down traditional barriers between the audience and the stage is something in which they excel. Fast, gritty, and often drenched in beer, the Troubadours perform to both their fans and new audience members with an genuine sincerity about them. They continually gather ground both literally and figuratively as they travel up, down, and across the Midwest. A gritty, country-leaning roots rock band out of eastern Oklahoma, Turnpike Troubadours at their best synthesize the populist, political folk of Woody Guthrie and the outlaw-styled honky tonk of Waylon Jennings with doses of bluegrass, Cajun, and straight-out rock dynamics. Fronted by singer and guitarist Evan Felker and including bassist R.C. Edwards, fiddler Kyle Nix, guitarist Ryan Engleman, and drummer Gabe Pearson, the group celebrates and explores modern rural life with a full awareness of history, delicately avoiding being ornate revivalists. A debut album, the self-released Bossier City, appeared in 2007. The follow-up, Diamonds & Gasoline, was produced by veteran songwriter Mike McClure and released in 2010. Goodbye Normal Street, their 2012 album, became their first to appear on Billboard’s country chart, peaking at 14. Three years later, they released their fourth album, The Turnpike Troubadours, and watched it debut at number three on the Billboard country chart, a sign that the band’s fan base was expanding. 2017 saw the release of the group’s highly anticipated fifth studio long-player, A Long Way from Your Heart. A decade removed from their debut, the Turnpike Troubadours are the definition of a working band. Every year they tour, with records arriving at regular intervals, each new set offering a refinement of the weathered, rangy Americana they unveiled on 2007’s Bossier City. A Long Way from Your Heart, the band’s fifth album, doesn’t depart from this tradition, feeling like a familiar favorite upon its first spin. Such coziness is deceptive, as A Long Way from Your Heart is hardly a retread of its 2015 predecessor, or any of the other Turnpike Troubadours albums for that matter. For one, it’s a lighter affair than the group’s eponymous 2015 LP. It’s fleet on its feet and bright in its outlook, letting humor sit alongside the heartbreak, pairing the easy-rolling “Old Time Feeling (Like Before)” and dusty twang of “Pipe Bomb Dream,” finding space for loose-limbed blues and galloping bluegrass. The Turnpike Troubadours navigate these shifts in style and tone with such grace, it takes some close listening to detect how pedal steel guitarist Hank Early adds depth and dimension to the band’s expansive Americana. As impressive as the band is, the
plainspoken songs of Evan Felker are what truly distinguish A Long Way from Your Heart. Felker constructs sturdy melodies and writes unfussy yet evocative words to match. He’s a storyteller with poetic flair, alternating between dry wit and clear-eyed sentiment, sometimes marrying the two traits in one song. These are complex songs worthy of a band as rich as the Turnpike Troubadours, and both Felker and his group are at a peak on A Long Way from Your Heart. As for the band’s live show, it’s something that they live for. Performing is one of the most important parts of the Turnpike Troubadours. “The show is about people having fun,” Felker says. “The more fun they have, the more fun we have and the better off everybody is. The record is about understanding the poetry in a real way. I figure it’s like people sitting around in their house, maybe drinking a beer. That’s more the place for poetry.” “Our sound comes from playing country music, punk rock and anything else we liked in honky-tonks and beer joints,” Edwards adds. “You’ve got to give the crowd something to dance to and have a good time. But songwriters are the most important thing. So I think everything we’ve done says that you can have it both ways.”

Stryper Perform at Warehouse Live Stryper will return to the road in May for the 2019 HISTORY Tour — Greatest Hits & Covers that influenced our generation! For all you Stryper fans in Houston, you can mark your calendars for Warehouse Live, where the band will be celebrating their 2019 HISTORY Tour on May 31st. That’s right, chart-topping rock band Stryper will return to the road in May for the 2019 HISTORY Tour - Greatest Hits & Covers that influenced our generation. The all-new HISTORY Tour comes on the heels of the band’s yearlong God Damn Evil World Tour, which concluded in Japan in February. “The music of our generation was and is timeless,” says Stryper frontman Michael Sweet. “It was all about the song and musicians who inspired you to want to play. We grew up on bands like Van Halen, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Journey and Boston. We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the music of these legendary bands. We thought it would

be an amazing experience to play some of these songs live and show you, the audience, exactly were our roots lie. “We’ll also be incorporating our own hits & videos from 1984 to 2019, and something from Perry’s past as well (Firehouse). We’re excited to get back out on the road and we look forward to seeing you soon,” continues Michael Sweet! Stryper would also like to extend their special thanks to Dave Moreno for making this commemorative artwork to celebrate the History Tour! Stryper consists of original members Michael Sweet (vocals and guitar), Robert Sweet (drums) and Oz Fox (guitar), as well as bassist Perry Richardson (formerly of the multi-platinum band Firehouse) who joined the group in 2018. Stryper continues to dominate the hard rock/ heavy metal scene with the their critically-acclaimed tenth studio album, God Damn Evil - released in 2018
via Frontiers Music srl. Rocking since 1984, Stryper is Stryperle for such classic ’80s metal albums as Soldiers Under Command, To Hell with the Devil and In God We Trust. In fact, Stryper is the first band to ever have two songs in MTV’s Top 10 simultaneously with their hits “Free” and “Honestly.” To date, the Dove Award-winning and GRAMMYnominated band has sold over 10 million records worldwide. God Damn Evil is the seventeenth release and twelfth studio album by Stryper, produced by frontman Michael Sweet and released on April 20, 2018. Awarding the album four stars from CCM Magazine, Matt Connor writes, “Their unapologetic approach to stay
true to their now classic rock/metal roots rewards longtime fans.” Andie Hardee, giving the album three and a half stars at Jesus Freak Hideout, states, “As impressive as the musicianship is, the songs themselves are also enjoyable.” Rating the album an 8.3 out of 10 by Sonic Perspectives, Alan Cox says, “Stryper is rocking so hard and well that even some close-minded skeptics are bound to be converted.” Wayne Parry, reviewing for The Washington Post, responds, “At an age where many heavy metal wailers dial it back due to the strains of decades of high notes, singer and guitarist Michael Sweet doubles down on his other worldly vocals.” The name of the album has been the source of controversy and has caused some Christian music retailers and even Walmart to not stock physical CDs in their stores. Michael Sweet has responded by saying, “We’re disappointed. Stryper has always been about making people think outside the box. Our new album title, God Damn Evil, is a statement that’s needed in our society. We’ve seen evil rise to new levels and this title is simply a prayer request asking God to damn or condemn all the evil around us. Many chains have joined us in making such a statement. Walmart, unfortunately, has not. The odd thing is of all the chains out there we assumed Walmart would be one to understand exactly what our point and purpose is. Unfortunately not. Although we respect their decision and what’s done is done, it’s frustrating to see something that’s meant for good get misinterpreted and misunderstood.” Established in southern California in 1983, multi-platinum crossover Christian metal band, Stryper, continues to share their positive message and energetic stage presence with a passionate following throughout the world. Since the band’s inception over 30 years ago, the founding members have stayed true to their deepest convictions, turning from “the ways of the world” and following their hearts instead. “In the past 34 years, we’ve evolved into what we are now,” says vocalist and guitarist Michael Sweet. “This is what we always really wanted to be. I love the progression. The story of Stryper is that of an underdog. We seem to go against the grain with everything we do, and our fans tend to be the same – They’re good hardworking people who believe in love, respect, and not conforming to the ways of the world.” The members of Stryper have proven themselves as metal stalwarts, leaving an indelible mark on the genre with each new release. With such hits as “Calling On You,” “Free,” “Honestly,” and “Always There For You,” Stryper’s album sales now exceed over 10 million worldwide. Add to that one of the most successful Christian rock albums ever, 1986’s multi-platinum To Hell With The Devil, and the unique distinction of being the first band in history to notch two songs in MTV’s Top 10 with “Free” and “Honestly.” The band has managed to leave an enduring impression on pop culture, as well. Singer Michael Sweet spent months trending online when he was identified as the doppelganger of 2016 presidential candidate Ted Cruz, who went on to discuss the comparison on an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! Several movies have paid homage to Stryper’s cultural significance, too, including Drew Barrymore’s “Whip It” and “Pain & Gain,” starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Since returning from a 12-year hiatus in 2003, Stryper has managed to release new music annually. Their most recent full-length album, Fallen [Frontiers Music SRL], reached #44 on the Billboard Top 200 and #2 on the Top Hard Music Albums chart. The group is now recording their next original album, which is due in April of 2018 and promises to be their most groundbreaking yet. This year will also bring Stryper back on the road, where they’ll have a chance to connect with fans, new and old. The line-up still features three of the original members, including singer songwriter Michael Sweet, his brother and drummer Robert Sweet, and guitarist Oz Fox. Recently, the group welcomed iconic bassist Perry Richardson (formerly of Firehouse), who will be joining them on tour. “We’re excited about the next season of Stryper,” says Sweet. “We have the best fans in the world and the band is at the top of its game musically and spiritually. We look forward to seeing everyone on the road.”

This night, The Concert Pub North featured an evening of Tribute Bands, capped off with a dazzling performance by the Van Halen Tribute, Best Of Both Worlds. For my money, this has got to be the best Van Halen tribute band I’ve ever heard. Maybe it’s because of all the energy. These guys just exude energy. It takes over ever aspect of their performance. It doesn’t hurt to have the best performers in town on stage either. On guitar is virtuoso, Joel Gregoire. Drums are handled by the beast himself, Craig LeMay. Keeping down the low end of the bass is Bobby Cayton, and on vocals is Jeff Vandenberghe. When these guys perform, it hard to tell who’s having the best time, the band or the audience. Both factions get into the action equally. And they don’t constrict themselves to any separate Van Halen era. Hence the name, Best Of Both Worlds. They perform the best of all their music, wether it’s Sammy Hagar or David Lee Roth. Every time I’ve seen them, it’s been a great show. If you haven’t seen these guys yet, you’re definitely missing out. Their show at The Concert Pub North was SOLD OUT! There wasn’t an empty seat available in the house and the rest was standing room only. Most folks reserved their tables weeks in advance. Congratulations goes out to Best of Both Worlds and The Concert Pub North on such a great happening! For all of you Best of Both Worlds fans out there, you can relive a portion of the experience right now on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television at http://www.houstonmusicnews right now. Check ‘em out when you get a chance. Here they are performing “Right Now,” and “Pound Cake,” followed by “Runnin’ With The Devil,” and part of “You Really Got Me.” We only got part of the last song here, but we got that great Eddie/Joel solo. It was fantastic. We hope you like it! Check out both Videos!
MUSIC NEWS The Eskimo Brothers Perform at The Jailhouse Saloon It was definitely a party at The Jailhouse Saloon this Friday night when The Eskimo Brothers took to the outdoor stage. The Saloon was packed with folks ready to put their dancing shoes on and partake in some great Hillbilly / Country music. The Eskimo Brothers are known around Nashville to put on a great show, but when they perform at The Jailhouse Saloon in Old Town Spring, they simply go WILD! Their set was explosive and without a doubt one of the best shows around. The crowd there hooped and hollered for more great tunes from these guys all night long, and it really made for an entertaining evening. The Eskimo Brothers have become known one of Nashville’s can’t miss live shows. When not playing their usual residencies in Nashville and Memphis, the band tours throughout the United States. Yeah, the show this night was definitely a PARTY! We can’t wait to see them back on The Jailhouse Saloon stage again. Word has it that they’ll be returning before the end of the year. Check ‘em out when they come back. You’ll be glad you did! In the meantime, check out the video from their show there at HMNTV – Houston Music News Television at http://www.houstonmusicnews.net RUN! MUSIC NEWS John Barraza Project Performs at Vollie Ray’s Circus
Burnhouse Perform at The 19th Hole
On stage this night at the 19th Hole Bar & Grill is the Baton Rouge based band, Burnhouse. Burnhouse music is a combination of Pop-Rock, Funk, and Dance with an original twist. With his stage presence, wide vocal range and song style, lead vocalist/bassist, Michael Rayburn, is sure to entertain. Drummer, Jude Housewright, has a unique way of providing a twist to popular music adding a beat that gets the crowd moving. Logan Maggio, lead guitarist, compliments the band with his funky guitar licks, his crowd interaction keeps you coming back for more. Burnhouse has been together just over 5 years, and has quickly become a familiar name to local music venues. Their show tonight at The 19th Hole was quite impressive and no doubt, they made a few new fans in the audience there. You can count us among them. The set was fantastic. We managed to capture a couple of moments from this show on film to share with you, so you can start watching them on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television at http:// www.houstonmusicnews.net now.
When we heard that John Barraza and his band, the John Barraza Project was going to be at Vollie Ray’s Circus, we dropped by to see him again. We’ve seen John before, and it was always a lot of fun, so we decided this would be a good place to finish up our evening at. John and the guys play a great mixture of old “Classic Rock”, Pop, New & Classic Country, Rock en Español, Tejano and after the evening we had this night, we figured it would be good to hear something a bit more familiar. When we got to Vollie’s, John had a pretty good crowd working, and everybody seemed to be in fine spirits. John was really mixing it up tonight with some great songs by Carlos Santana, Luke Bryan, Midland, and John Waite. He was sounding pretty good tonight. It really made for a good close to a great evening. Check him out sometime, and be sure to check out Vollie Ray’s Circus near the old Ellington Air Force Base. Vollie always seems to have something fun going on there. Here he is performing John Waite’s “Missing You.”

The Blaggards Perform at The Ashford Pub We were celebrating some great ol’ Stout Irish Rock’ this night at The Ashford Pub. Yeah, one of our favorite bands is the Blaggards and any time they perform at The Ashford Pub, you’ll find us there. Just can’t get enough of it. Guitarist and lead singer Patrick Devlin is one helluva frontman. He really knows how to whip a crowd into a frenzy. Fiddler Wes Barlow is a hoot also. He can play some unbelievable things on that fiddle. You just have to experience it to believe it. That coupled with the great rhythm section of bassist Chad Smalley and drummer Michael McAloon always make for a good show. Hey guys! I had a great time again this night. Can’t wait to see you there again.

Sacred Reich Perform at The Scout Bar Heavy metal thrash band, Sacred Reich will be performing this month at The Scout Bar on May 23rd. Led by bassist/ vocalist Phil Rind, this Phoenix-based band also includes Wiley Arnett, Jason Rainey, and Greg Hall. Sacred Reich is noted for its highly opinionated political lyrics, examination of personal politics, and thoroughly uncompromising spirit, as well as an occasional satiric sense of humor, and its fortunes have continued to rise over the course of the band’s career. Phoenix-based thrash icons, SACRED REICH, are thrilled to announce the return of former drummer Dave McClain to their ranks, following his departure from Bay Area Metal outfit Machine Head last month after 23 years on the drum throne. Before joining Machine Head, McClain played drums for SACRED REICH for four years between 1991 and 1995. SACRED REICH‘s frontman and bassist, Phil Rind comments: “It is with great pleasure that we announce that Dave McClain is once again a member of SACRED REICH! This was the best case scenario that we could have hoped for. Dave is the best! A great drummer and a great person and we are beyond excited to welcome him back to the band. We’re headed into the studio in February and can’t wait for you all to hear our new record due in the Summer of 2019!“ Dave echoes the sentiment, stating “I’m so excited about re-joining my brothers in Sacred Reich. To have the opportunity to make and play music with one of my favorite metal bands was always something I hoped could happen. I can’t wait for ev-
eryone to hear the new album that we’re recording in February and to come see us out on the road in 2019-2020.“ Sacred Reich will be in town this month performing songs from their past catalog, as well as a couple of new ones from their upcoming new album. In January 2018, Sacred Reich signed to Metal Blade Records and began working on their fifth studio album, Awakening, tentatively due for release in the summer of 2019. It’ll be the band’s first studio album since 1996’s Heal and will feature former Machine Head drummer Dave McClain, who returned to the Sacred Reich lineup in December. Phil Rind, frontman for the band says: “Recording is in full swing with producer Arthur Rizk at The Platinum Underground in Arizona. “We are so excited to be back in the studio after 23 years and Dave is currently killing it on the drums. It sounds sick! Our new record, Awakening, is due this summer. Stay tuned!” This will be the band’s first full-length studio album since 1996’s Heal, and their first since drummer Dave McClain and guitarist Joey Radziwill replaced founding members Greg Hall and Jason Rainey respectively,” continues Phil. Sacred Reich is an American thrash metal band based in Phoenix, Arizona, that was formed in 1985. Singer/songwriter Phil Rind’s interest was in socially conscious and political speed metal. After several albums on Metal Blade Records, they signed to Hollywood Records for a short stint, but later returned to Metal Blade to continue their musical career. The band split in 2000, but reunited in 2006. Sacred Reich has been
credited, along with Testament, Destruction, Death Angel and Dark Angel, for leading the second wave of thrash metal movement in the late 1980s. Former drummer Dave McClain went on to join Machine Head in 1995. Lead guitarist Wiley Arnett went on to form The Human Condition with St. Madness vocalist Prophet in July 2000. In November 2006, the band announced they would play several shows in the summer of 2007 in Europe, including Wacken Open Air; however, they had no plans to record a new album. The band also contributed the Black Sabbath cover “Sweet Leaf” to the Hempilation: Freedom Is NORML compilation album to benefit NORML, and the Subhumans cover “The Big Picture” appears
as the B-side of the “Open Book” promotional single. A three disk boxed set with remastered versions of Ignorance and Surf Nicaragua with additional bonus material, including the “Draining You of Life” demo tape and a live DVD, was originally slated for release in September 2005, but was released in Europe only in the summer of 2007 by Metal Blade Records. In the spring of 2017, the band announced their first North American tour in 21 years. Now Sacred Reich is back on the road with a new tour and an album in the works, not to mention a reunion going on. This promises to be a good year for Sacred Reich. Drop by the Scout Bar this month and catch their performance this month on the 23rd.

Your Guide To Great Food and Entertainment Inside The 610 Loop Londale Performs at Rockefellers Here we are at Rockefellers. On stage now is Londale celebrating the release of their new album, “Achilles.” The band describes their sound as a cross between Tom Petty, REM, and Glen Frey. They feel that their music is a “throwback to the scratchy, low-fi sound of the transitor radios popular in the 1950s, with a rock edge reminiscent of the 1990s. However, for the guys in Londale, this retro-fresh album isn’t about the past, it’s a nod towards the future. Their show this night at Rockefellers was quite impressive and the songs we heard them perform off the album were equally as impressive. 24th. Gary Hoey Performs at Rockefellers Esteemed guitarist, Gary Hoey, performed this night at Rockefellers in Houston. Gary Hoey is a hard rock and latterly blues rock guitarist, singer and songwriter. He has recorded over 20 albums and had five Top 20 Billboard hits. In 1993, he recorded the successful Animal Instinct album, which included a cover of the Focus hit “Hocus Pocus”] The single reached the top five in the Billboard Hot 100 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, and the album was also commercially successful. The successful Endless Summer II (1995) soundtrack soon followed. He went on to record around twelve instrumental albums, all electric guitar oriented. His 1996 release, Bug Alley, displayed added vocal ability that he has expanded on more recent albums. He continues to tour extensively. Hoey’s most recent album, Neon Highway Blues was released in 2019. It debuted at number 2 in the US Billboard Blues Albums Chart. Hoey endorses and primarily plays Fender guitars, favoring multiple different Strat models Hoey’s show at Rockefellers this evening was quite impressive as he performed quite a few numbers from his solo releases, as well as releasing a barrage of impressive leads. His show this night was definitely an inspiration, and I’m sure a lot of guitarists that I spotted in this crowd tonight went home to brush up on their chops. It was another great performance at one of Houston’s finest landmark clubs. Your Guide To Great Food and Entertainment Inside The 610 Loop The Skatastrophics Perform at Houston Underground
Koodookoo Perform at the Last Concert Cafe
Tonight we dropped by Houston Underground to see The Skatastrophics. The Skatastrohics are a Rock/Ska/Reggae influenced band with a definite style all their own. The band certainly has a full sound to their performances. With a 7 piece band, including horns, the band can really fill a room with sound. Frontman Billy Munoz really knows how to harness the audience and interact with them. We’ve seen them before, but it’s been awhile. When we heard they were going to be at Houston Underground, we thought we’d go by and see if they were as good as when we saw them before. And surprise! Not only we’re they good, they were even better than we remembered. Here’s another band you need to check out sometime. In fact, you can check ‘em out on the two videos we have posted on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television.

I just love going to the Last Concert Cafe. The music I experience there is not normally what I experience at the other clubs around. It’s usually what I call the “Jam Band Experience”... not you’re normally 3 minute songs. Tonight on stage, direct from Austin, was the Jam Band, Koodookoo. These guys are the epitome of “Jam Bands”. Long songs sprinkled with Jams, Prog, and a hint of Southern Rock, combined with Funk. What a great set! I stayed for most of it and it was a lot of fun. Koodookoo invites you to travel the furthest reaches of the multiverse and dive into the deepest parts of your heart and mind on a consciousness-expanding journey. Formed in 2017 from the live music capital of the world, Koodookoo has developed a tidal wave of sonic abilities that bend reality, push boundaries, and transform all preconceived notions of where music can go. Since busting out in the Austin jam scene in early 2018, Koodookoo has wiggled its ways into the ears and hearts of an ever growing family they have dubbed the Koodookrew. Koodookoo has supported acts such as The Werks, Funk You, and Greasy Hands, and has also headlined several shows in Austin to an always enthusiastic crowd. The band recently released their debut EP, “Koo d’etat,” which they performed selections from at The Last Concert Cafe. As we said, the show was fantastic, so we decided to share it with you. Here’s a couple of videos from this nights show for you to check out on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did. which is on Sun. May 26th, and the Houston Blues Society Jam Thurs. May 30th. You can also see such shows as Grady Gaines for his bday party, Fri. May 10th, and another birthday celebration for Jonn “Del Toro” Richardson on Sat. May 18th. Alan Haynes is Sat. May 25th. Your Guide To Great Food and Entertainment Inside The 610 Loop Double Vision Performs at Rock N Ray’s We’re at Rock N Rays tonight to see Houston’s Premiere Foreigner Tribute, Double Vision HTX. If you’re into Foreigner, then you really need to see these guys. They do a helluva job recreating the Foreigner experience. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a better Foreigner tribute than these guys. Everything is just right on with the music. It should be. They’ve got a great roster of musicians in this group... fantastic singer, great rhythm section, powerhouse guitarist, and the best damn rock keyboardist in Houston. Double Vision HTX is Randy Folk (lead vocals), Eric Halpern (guitars), Adam Rawlings (keyboards, vocals), Bill Thompson (drums, vocals), Joey Edgerly (bass, vocals). Tonight’s show at Rock N Ray’s was a blast. It really was just like being at a Foreigner concert, only a little more intimate. We’ve got some great moments from this night to share with you right now on HMNTV - Houston Music Television, so kick back and start rockin’ to some Foreigner, courtesy of Double Vision HTX and Rock N Ray’s. Here they are performing “Women” and “That Was Yesterday,” “Blue Morning, Blue Day” and “Urgent.”

Your Guide To Great Food and Entertainment Inside The 610 Loop The Mighty Orq Performs at The Big Easy We really like The Mighty Orq. When we saw he was going to be at The Big Easy, we decided to make that our destination for the night. Orq is one of the best musicians we’ve ever seen. This guy is a genius on guitar. His special style of performing the Blues is very impressive and we’ve always had a great time watching him perform. I’m sure that some of you out there have seen him perform before, I’m sure you’ll agree with me. This guy is fantastic. Since 2002 The Mighty Orq has been performing solo and with his band across the US and Europe. He has won multiple awards, released seven albums, and an instructional DVD for solo resonator slide guitar. He is a uniquely talented singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist with a focus in the American Roots Music genres. His show tonight at The Big Easy was certainly a lot of fun and we had a great time there watching him perform at combination of cover tunes and his own original pieces. Which ever he performed, he certainly did an impressive performance. Boz Scaggs Performs at the House Of Blues Boz Scaggs put on an incredible show at Houston’s House of Blues this past month. The place was packed to standing room only with Boz Scaggs fans who were just mesmerized by his great performance there. Boz treated us to an unbelievable selection of his greatest hits. From the opening bars of “Jojo,” we knew we were in for something special tonight. And the songs just kept on coming. Next up was “It’s Over” from the “Silk Degrees” album. Then we were in for something different.... “Rock and Stick” from his new album “Out of the Blues.” was up, followed by “The Feeling Is Gone” and “Radiator 110,” both from the new album. The new songs were fantastic. Now we’re back in the greatest hits mode and we get “Sick and Tired,” “Georgia,” “Look What You’ve Done To Me,” “Lowdown,” and “Lido Shuffle” followed by two encores, “What Can I Say” and “Somebody Loan Me A Dime.” But that wasn’t enough for the Houston audience, and after a ferocious applause Boz returned with “You Never Can Tell.” Yeah folks, this was one incredible show. JJ Dynomite Perform at Katie’s Bar
We’re back in Baycliff to see our old buddies JJ Dynamite. This La Porte based band has been delighting audiences all over with their noholds barred, energy packed set, of classic rock hits. We always have a blast when we’re at a JJ Dynamite show. I’ve got to admit, it’s been a while since I’ve seen them, but once they start to perform, it seems like just yesterday. I really like these guys setlist. They perform more of the 70s type of “Classic Rock” that I’m really into. I mean, after all, who performs songs by Trapeze. JJ does. In fact, they’re the only band out there that I know that does. Whatever they perform, they do an excellent job, but don’t take our word for it. Talk to some of the many people that pack their performances out. Believe me, there’s not an empty seat in the house, unless the people are on the dance floor. Come to think of it, when I was looking at the dance floor, all I saw were women on it. Now I remember why we all started bands when we were kids. These guys rocked like it was going to be their last time to perform tonight. They were extraordinary. Johnny Duff is one of the best rock guitarists I know. The rhythm section of Randy Duff and Brock Proctor is one of the best rhythm sections I’ve ever seen. They compliment each others moves perfectly. Yeah, this is what a true “Classic Rock” band sounds like. This is the tightest three piece I’ve seen in a while. We know you’re gonna like them too once you’ve watched the two videos we Puff N Stuff If you haven’t filmed at Katie’s Bar. Check ‘em out right now on HMNTV - Houston checked out Puff N Stuff, Music News Television at http://www.houstonmusicnews.net. Here they you should. Fayuca Perform at The Scout Bar Arizona based band, Fayuca, bring their slick combination of ReggaeRock / Latino music to the Scout Bar this night. Their sound shifts through genres while blending modern - reggae melodies with Latin percussio, tied seamlessly by razor guitar riffs and progressive rock breakdowns. Their show at Scout Bar really livened up things. It certainly gave us a new and interesting take on reggaie music. Excellent show. When they return, I’ll be there to see them. You should too.

The Feel Perform at Cruiser’s Ice House
We’ve dropped by our favorite Ice House tonight, Cruiser’s Ice House, in Santa Fe. Tonight on stage is another band we’ve seen before, The Feel. Here’s another cool band that we always enjoy seeing. The Feel, a Houston based classic rock and blues rock band, always put on a fine show. Their a tight three piece band with a lot of soul, and a great set list. Tonight the guys were definitely into the music and putting on a wonderful show. We really liked everything they were performing tonight, and they were definitely doing it with a lot of conviction. We really like their rendition of ZZ Top’s “Fool For Your Stockings.” It really rocked us to our bones. In the meantime, we’ve got a little of their performance at Cruiser’s Ice House to share with you on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television at http://www.houstonmusicnews.net. Tonight we were in the mood for a little Country Music, so we headed out to Diamond Jim’s Country Saloon in Texas City. Diamond Jim’s always has some great Country Bands there. Country Music isn’t the only kind of music they have there, but when they do, it’s always a fine band. They don’t hire any mediocre Country Bands. It’s always top notch talent, and tonight it was one of our favorite bands from Austin, Armadillo Road. Armadillo Road has a couple of fine albums under their belt, with the latest being released just this last year. It’s titled “Honky Tonk Way.” In addition to their own songs, they always perform some fine Country Classics as well. Armadillo Road takes you through a journey of sorrow, heartache, and hillbilly hell raising. With their brilliant melodies, soulful harmonies, and rich lyrical content, it’s easy to get completely absorbed by their music. The five piece band hailing from all parts of Texas have a strong grasp on their southern roots and incorporate unique regional attributes to make this a well rounded country music band. With their outlaw attitude they rock the honky tonks, yet their ballads have the smoothness to swoon any dance hall. They are not just another country music band, they are a Texas roots band. You haven’t heard Texas if you have not heard Armadillo Road. We’ve got a couple of cool songs from their performance tonight at Diamond Jim’s to share with you, so tune into HMNTV - Houston Music News Television right now at http://www.houstonmusicnews.net and start watching right now. MUSIC NEWS The Great Boa Perform at The BFE Rock Club When we want to hear something a bit heavier, we head out to The BFE Rock Club on Jones Road. They always have just what we’re looking for. We want something that just rips, and we definitely found it tonight with The Great BOA. The Great B.O.A is a metal band from Houston, Tx. They tell us they were born from a virus that had spread through their music. They have been playing together for years and have accumulated a vast influence of all types of music. Their sound is shaped from all forms of metal but keeping melody in the forefront. The idea of the name is an acronym for “The Great Beast of Aftermath”. This means that there is always a Beast created after a life event. Whether it be good or bad, something is awakened and drives you forward, upward and outward or tries to destroy you. Their music represents those struggles and triumphs for them. This Houston band started out in 2014 and their members are J. Metal James (Vocals and Guitar), Jay Cronin ( Drums and Vocals), Alex Wise ( Guitars), and Koady Herron (Bass and Vocals). Yeah, this band is heavy, and it really hit the spot for us tonight. We definitely recommend this band, so be sure to see them at The BFE some night. In the meantime, sit back and watch the two videos we have of them from this performance right now on HMNTV – Houston Music News Television at http:// www.houstonmusicnews.net
Epic Performs at The BFE Rock Bar Tonight The BFE Rock Club was rocked to its foundations with and epic rock show performed by none other than EPIC. For our money, Epic is one of the best hard rock outfits in Houston. They perform with a conviction like no other band on the circuit in Houston today, making sure that they put on the best show they can every time they perform. Tonight was no exception and they were really good. The fans just love them and they always bring in a good crowd of enthusiastic partiers. Order extra beer when you book these guys. EPIC is a four piece thrash metal band from Houston Texas. A couple of ways you could describe their sound is heavy, fast, and in your face. But there is only one word to fully describe them, and that is......EPIC. Their sound is very intense and full of energy. They are not just your typical metal band. They bring the thrash, the groove, and most of all the BALLS!!! Epic is Chris Crawford (drums), Ryan Hill (Bass,Backup vocals), Greg Cernuch (Lead Guitar), and Carlos Fernandez (Lead vocals & Rhythm guitar). Check out these great videos we have posted from their show at BFE and I'm sure you'll become and EPIC fan fast, if you aren't already. You can catch their performances on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television at http:// www.houstonmusicnews.net

I had The chance to go By Jay Lambs Remy ICONS AT BADASSERY This month Icons At Badassery would like to honor the band Demonic Hen FIVE HARDCORE SUPER VEGGIES HAVE UNITED TO WARN THE EARTH ABOUT THE DEMONIC HEN!! Many decades ago, the US Government started funding experiments to create the ultimate monster chicken: All meat, no fillers. Through all of this mad science a demonic hen was spawned from the tortured souls of millions of factory slaughtered chickens. This “Demonic Hen” comes to punish you for all of your callous wastefulness. The human race would be laid waste if not for the five warrior musician vagabonds, warped and enraged with chemicals and barren soil. KALE!!! ASPARAGUS!!! BEET!!! EGGPLANT!!! AND CARROT!! Sprouted up on the National USDA Organic Research Farm in the year 2075. Not your typical vegetables, they are a hybrid of humanoid crops accidentally brought about through the farm’s use of a new “soylent green” type fertilizer called Humus Weed & Feed. The vegetables on this farm were not grown to feed humans, as you would think, but to feed the millions of chickens in the Demonic Hen’s brood. This gigantic, carnivorous foul had been feeding on humans until this super species came along. However, when fully grown, not only did the Super Veggies run out of that god-forsaken field on their sprouted limbs, but their high-level consciousness made them aware of their real mission: stopping this abomination from EVER happening. As a super food group they used their inherent intelligence of the natural world to transport through time to a pivotal point in history. A time when many were getting back to gardening, healthy organic eating, fighting against GMOs, marching against Monsanto, and supporting local farmers at farmer’s markets. This was the generation that could make a real difference. But how could they get the dire message to them LOUD and FAST?.....MUSIC!!! They came from the farms and gardens of the future to warn you all: BEWARE THE DEMONIC HEN! You can find DEMONIC HEN’s first album, which is a CD/DVD/cookbook boxset, called “Live at Rudyard’s: Raw, Chopped and Stewed” on Bandcamp and at their live shows. They are currently recording their second album. Their next upcoming show is the Gamers Rock

Jimmy Buffett Performs at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Parrotheads, Rejoice. You’re favorite “son of a son of a sailor” will be back in town this June 1st at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. That’s right, June 1st marks the return of the legendary Jimmy Buffet and the Coral Reefer Band. And believe me folks, if you’ve ever been to a Jimmy Buffet show, you know it’s just not a concert, IT’S A PARTY! As you all know, Jimmy likes to give his tours a special name and appropriately enough, his 2019 tour is called the “Son of Son of a Sailor Tour.” Needless to say, the wait is over for his loyal Parrotheads that count down every day until he returns to their favorite party spot. This tour is also the continuation of a huge celebration for Jimmy. His famed LP “Son of a Son of a Sailor” was released in 1978 and he has been celebrating his 40th Anniversary of this classic release. The 40th Anniversary celebration is also snaking its way into 2019. Jimmy wrote the title song of this album as a tribute to his grandfather, James Delaney Buffett, Sr., who had a profound influence on young Jimmy life. By the way, the Pascagoula, Mississippi born, and Mobile Alabama raised Buffett is a fourth-generation sailor and fisherman, not to mention an avid pilot. In addition to “Son of a Son of a Sailor,” the album also contained several other Buffett classics, such as the hit song, “Cheeseburger In Paradise,” along with “Livingston Saturday Night,” “Manana,” and “Cowboy In The Jungle. The album “Son of a Son of a Sailor” reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart, #6 on the Billboard Top Country Albums Chart and was certified Platinum by the RIAA. Without a doubt it’s been a monumental album for Buffett. But as you all know, this album is just a drop in the bucket. Jimmy is responsible for a slew of great tunes, such as “Margaritaville,” “Come Monday,” “Fins,” “Volcano,” “A Pirate Looks at Forty,” “Why Don’t We Get Drunk,” “Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes,” “It’s Five O’clock Somewhere,” “Trip Around The Sun,” and even “Jamaica Mistaica,” a song about Jamaica Police firing on his plane mistakenly one time. We’re not even going to mention albums now. With over 50 albums to his credit, just the list of them would fill up this story. Of course, most of the albums on that list have gone gold, platinum or multi-platinum. Jimmy calls his special style of musical talents, “drunken Caribbean rock ‘n’ roll”, a style of
music that is revered by his loyal Parrothead family. Jimmy has received two Grammy nominations, numerous Country Music Association awards and was the recipient of one of the nation’s highest songwriting honors when he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall Of Fame. Speaking of Buffett classics, the most famous of them all, “Margaritaville” has been inducted into the 2016 Grammy Hall of Fame for its cultural and historic significance. Only those recordings that have influenced and inspired both music creators and fans for genera-
tions are considered for this most special honor. In addition to being a great songwriter and storyteller, Jimmy is also an esteemed writer. Jimmy started his writing career early. One of his first jobs was being a correspondent for Billboard magazine in Nashville. Since those early days, he has written three #1 best sellers, which include “Tales From Margaritaville,” “Where Is Joe Merchant?,” and “A Pirate Looks at Fifty.” He also co-wrote two children’s books with his daughter Savannah Jane which are “The Jolly Mon” and “Trouble Dolls.” Other literary works of Buffett include “A Salty Piece Of Land” and “Swine Not?” As a best-selling author, he is one of only nine authors in the history of the New York Times Bestseller List to have reached #1 on both their fiction and non-fiction lists. Buffett’s film and television cameos are enormous as well. He co-produced and appeared in the film “Hoot,” as well as made cameo appearance in “Repo Man,” “Cobb,” “Hook,” “Cobb,” “Congo,” and “From The Earth To The Moon.” You may have noticed him in the film “Jurassic Park.” He was the guy holding two margaritas when the dinosaurs burst loose in the park. TV appearances for Jimmy include “Sesame Street” and “Hawaii Five-O” in 2011. He got to play a helicopter pilot named Frank Bama, a character from his novel, “Where Is Joe Merchant?” Now, in addition to being a songwriter, writer, actor, and more, Jimmy is also a restaurateur. He owns the “Margaritaville Café” restaurant chain and is a co-developer of the “Cheeseburger In Paradise” restaurant chain. He has also licensed Margaritaville Tequila, Margaritaville Footwear, and Margarita Foods, which includes chips, salsa, guacamole, shrimp, chicken, and more. Jimmy’s latest venture has been a foray into Theatre. His musical “Escape To Margaritaville had its world premiere in La Jolla, California, and made pre-Broadway stops in New Orleans, Houston and Chicago. It opened on Broadway in New York at the Marquis Theatre on March 15, 2018. The original Broadway cast recording of the musical was recently released, and the musical will go on the road in October 2019. Well, as you can see Jimmy Buffett is one busy dude. He’s got his hands on just about everything. And come June 1st he will have his hands on his guitar at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, singing his, “drunken Caribbean rock ‘n’ roll” songs to a packed house of Parrotheads. We suggest that you get your tickets as soon as you can, because his parties tend to sell out. In the meantime, it’s time for another cheeseburger.

The Hollywood Spotlight By Hollywood Steve Rangel “Holy Darkness”) is relatively new to the Houston metal scene. But founding members Barragan (Helstar) and Rocha (La Fiebre) aredecorated veterans of the music wars. With Barragan also serving as producer, the duo have created a sound that is both refreshingly original and comfortably familiar. Their material is aggressive, but polished and razor sharp. Vocalist Ramirez
consistently delivers throughout, and the rhythm section of Soliz and Recio are top shelf, as well. Although Santa Oscuridad walks the fine line between metal and thrash, they never quite cross the border into dark
territory. Their style remains firmly entrenched in the Sabbath-Priest-Motörhead zone. But there are some undeniably American influences as well. It is an approach that clearly suits them, as this offering is effective on all levels. Recorded at Barragan’s Hombre Malo Studios and mastered by Bill Metoyer (a legend of the genre most noted for his work with L.A.’s Metal Blade Records), the production on this release is flawless. All told, Santa Oscuridad (both the band and the CD) are beyond impressive. And a full length album will definitely be something to look forward to.
Seven8Seven In Transmission” The latest release from Houston’s Seven8Seven is an intriguing combination of heavy genres. “In Transmission” is a collection of ten high energy songs (following a brief spoken word intro) that is perhaps best described as controlled chaos. This creative foursome seamlessly infuse their hard rock sound with elements of punk and alternative, with just a hint of 80’s guitar rock. The arrangements range from straight-forward to sophisticated, as does the lyrical content. But the delivery is always the same: brutal, passionate, and convincing. Make no mistake, this isn’t just another over-reaching garage band immersed in studio gloss. Seven8Seven is a polished and professional outfit. This is a singer who can actually sing, and musicians who are high level players all. There are structured guitar solos, sharp harmony vocals, impressive rhythm section work, and effective dynamics. And no, in this genre of music, none of those ingredients are givens. Combine all of these elements with excellent production value and quality songwriting, and “In Transmission” is a truly standout effort. There is even a Spanish language track (Desperdicio Mental), just to give it a bit of a crossover appeal. There are no recording or songwriting credits, nor any personnel listings provided here, which I generally view as a disappointment. In most cases, it’s a careless oversight by the artist. But in this instance, I get the distinct impression that it’s a deliberate move, one designed to highlight the material as opposed to any individuals. Regardless, fans of hard and heavy music with a little something extra would be well advised to give this one a listen.
Santa Oscuridad Santa Oscuridad Fans of old school guitar metal will be thrilled with the self-titled EP from Santa Oscuridad. This powerhouse 5-piece (consisting of Juan Ramirez/vocals, Rudy Rocha/guitars-vocals, Larry Barragan/guitars, Ray Soliz/bass guitar, and Jamie Recio/ drums) take no prisoners on this scorching six song effort. And while this is a Spanish language album, it will no doubt appeal to fans of heavy rock in any country. Santa Oscuridad (which in English translates to May 2019
