JOE WALSH HOSTS VETSAID 2019 IN HOUSTON, SUNDAY NOVEMBER 10 AT THE TOYOTA CENTER

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee and multi-GRAMMY Award winning musician Joe Walsh and VetsAid, his national 501(c)3 nonprofit veterans organization, today announce the lineup and on-sale date for their 3rd annual music festival. VetsAid 2019 will feature sets from ZZ Top, The Doobie Brothers, Brad Paisley, Sheryl Crow, Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit and Joe Walsh and will take place at 5:30pm on Sunday, November 10, 2019, on the eve of Veterans Day, at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Tickets will be available through the Toyota Center Box Office, at www.toyotacenter.com or by calling 1-866-4HOUTIX and will be priced at $199.50, $149.50, $119.50, $99.50, $79.50, $49.50 and $25. The inaugural VetsAid took place on September 20, 2017 with a concert at the EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia featuring performances by Walsh, Zac Brown Band, Keith Urban and Gary Clark Jr. VetsAid 2018 was a blockbuster event featuring Don Henley, James Taylor, Chris Stapleton, Haim and Joe, who was joined by special guest Ringo Starr. They performed to a sell out crowd of nearly 18,000. It was also in Tacoma

where Walsh and VetsAid hosted its first Veterans Jobs Fair where dozens of local vets found meaningful full-time employment with established regional employers in the Pacific Northwest. As every year, all net proceeds from the concert will go directly to the veterans’ services charities selected through a vetting process coordinated in tandem with the National Association of Veterans Serving Organizations (NAVSO). In its first two years, VetsAid has disbursed nearly $1.2M in grants to veterans’ services organizations on the national level and the regional level with a focus on the festival’s host city. This year, VetsAid plans to disburse grants to Houston-area organizations; small grant applications have been open since May 2019 via the VetsAid website (www.vetsaid.org). Veterans and their wellbeing have always been important to Walsh, a Gold Star son himself. His father was a flight instructor for the first

US operational jet powered aircraft, the Lockheed F-80 Shooting Star, and died while stationed and on active duty on Okinawa when Walsh was 20 months old. Walsh has been involved with veterans’ related causes for years, supporting various charities, visiting the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and offering free guitar lessons to the wounded veterans there. He has campaigned for his good friend, (now) United States Senator Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, an Iraq War veteran and double amputee. Walsh aims to use this platform to raise funds and awareness for the still urgent and significant needs of our returning soldiers and their families. Through the establishment of VetsAid and this annual benefit concert, he aims to give back to those who have given so much in sacrifice for this country. “It’s about time we brought VetsAid down to Texas and who better to share the stage with than my old buddies and Houston’s own ZZ Top! With Brad, Sheryl, Jason and more special guests to be announced joining us too this will be yet another historic night of incredible music for our vets.” Joe Walsh continues, “This is a night where all are welcome to celebrate the things that unite us as Americans: good friends, open hearts and great music!” VetsAid, the third annual concert to support veterans and their families hosted by Joe Walsh, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee and multi GRAMMY Award recipient, has selected the nonprofit partners that will benefit from this year’s November 10th concert at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. The grants are broken out into large and small grant recipients and all net proceeds from the concert determine the final grant amounts. Founded by Walsh in 2017, the 501C3 VetsAid has disbursed over $1.2M to veteran-serving nonprofits. The large grant recipients selected are: Combined Arms, Headstrong Project, United States Veterans Initiative (U.S. Vets), Next Op Veterans, Vets4Warriors, Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes, Swords to Plowshares and Sentinels of Freedom. The small grant recipients selected are: Grace After Fire, Train A Dog Save A Warrior (TADSAW), Texas Veterans Outdoors, Smiles for Veterans, Hero’s Bridge, Every Third Saturday, Vets on Track Foundation, Easter Seals Houston and Heartstrides. Providing support to organizations that care for the nation’s veterans and military families is deeply personal to Walsh, a Gold Star survivor whose father died while on active duty on Okinawa, Japan when Walsh was 20 months old. “It’s with great excitement that we announce our grant recipients for VetsAid 2019,”

explains Joe Walsh. “VetsAid is a festival that we bring to points across this great country of ours and this year we are honored to spread the love and funds to the veterans community in and around the Houston metro area. Come celebrate with us this November 10th at the Toyota Center!” With assistance from the National Association of Veteran-Serving Organizations (NAVSO), Walsh and the Board of VetsAid reviewed numerous organizations before selecting these 17 veteran focused nonprofits. “Mr. Walsh is a great philanthropist and advocate for the military and veteran community,” says Kelly Finn Störmer, Chief Operating Officer of the National Association of Veteran-Serving Organizations (NAVSO), the organization assisting the selection process. “We are honored to partner with VetsAid to recommend high impact programs creating positive change for veterans and military families.” Houston has the 2nd largest veteran population in the nation with over 250,000 veterans. Mr. Walsh will serve as the keynote speaker and Grand Marshal of the “Houston Salutes American Heroes Veterans Day Celebration” honoring the brave men, women and families who have fought and sacrificed for the nation’s liberty and freedom. Koe Wetzel Performs At White Oak Music Hall Koe Wetzel will be appearing this month at White Oak Music Hall on Saturday, November 30th. Born and raised in East Texas, Koe Wetzel is rapidly gaining momentum in the Texas scene. The band brings a strong mixture of southern rock energy and East Texas charm. Koe began performing at an early age. Overnight, he had what seemed like an immediate fan base in his home state. He has since brought together this band and hit the road touring heavily. The band is made up of Koe Wetzel (Vocals/ Acoustic Guitar), Andres Rocha (Drums), Mason Morris (Harmony Vocals/Bass), Jerrod Flusche (Rhythm/ Lead Guitar), and Michael Odis Parrish (Lead Guitar.) As the band continued to play shows, Koe began writing in between performances. Bringing personal experience and inspiration from others to life with a melody was second nature to the young artist, “Being able to connect with an audience, or a fan, because they feel like they can relate to your lyrics is one of the coolest experiences in the world. There’s no greater feeling than hearing that your lyrics or your song mean something to someone.” Koe Wetzel’s album, “Noise Complaint” was released in 2016 and the band has hit the studio to work on their sophomore album. Resting comfortably between the swagger of bro-country and the punch of rootsy rock & roll, Koe Wetzel is a singer and songwriter from Texas who rose quickly from obscurity to become one of the most popular acts on the Lone Star State’s country scene. Wetzel was born in the East Texas town of Pittsburg on July 14, 1992. He picked up his interest in music from his mother, who was a singer and brought young Koe on the road with her; he sang on-stage with her for the first time when he was just six. Wetzel took up the guitar at the age of 12, but while he had a love for music, it took a back seat to sports while he was growing up. In high school, Wetzel played both football and baseball, and he went on to play football for Tarleton State University. As Wetzel’s interest in football began to wane, however, his love of music grew, and in 2012 he left school to focus on songwriting and performing. He put together a band, Koe Wetzel & the Konvicts, and they released an EP, Love and Lies, in June 2012. Wetzel and his group hit the road hard, playing extensively in Texas and around the Southwest, and their passionate live shows, rowdy but relatable lyrics, and strong cha-

risma helped them win a loyal following, especially among college students and twenty-somethings. The buzz on Wetzel grew after the release of his first full-length album, Out on Parole, in January 2015, but he became a genuine star in Texas with the release of Noise Complaint, which arrived in March 2017. “February 28, 2016,” “Something to Talk About,” and “Tell It All Town” won regional airplay and became favorites on streaming services — so much so that when one major streaming outfit pulled Wetzel’s music due to a licensing oversight on the artist’s part, fans flooded social media with demands that his music be reinstated. The mistake ultimately did more to help Wetzel’s popularity than hurt it, and he continued to sell out clubs and book festival appearances across the Southwest. In May 2019, Wetzel released his sophomore fulllength album, Harold Saul High.

MUSIC NEWS The Black Keys are currently on their thirty-eight date North American “Let’s Rock” tour. In the Associated Press interview with Dan and Patrick they reveal what fans can expect from their forthcoming tour — “‘Every single record we’ve ever made since the very beginning, I’ve always doubled up my guitars or tripled them up,’ said Auerbach. ‘And this is the first time I’ve ever really heard that onstage.’’ The “Let’s Rock” tour will stop in Houston on November 22 at Toyota Center and feature special guests Modest Mouse. Shannon & The Clams will open select shows on the tour. The band also shared live versions of songs, taped at a recent rehearsal in front of a small audience made up of members of the band’s fan club, including “Go” via Rolling Stone, “I Got Mine,” and “Lonely Boy”. For the performance they were joined by their touring band, Andrew Gabbard and Delicate Steve on guitar, and Zachary Gabbard on bass. The Black Keys’ ninth studio album, “Let’s Rock,” was released on June 28 of this year via Easy Eye Sound/Nonesuch Records and debuted at number 1 on the US Top Current Album Chart. Internationally, “Let’s Rock” is the band’s third consecutive top 10 album in the UK, debuting at No. 3, as well as top 10 in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland, among others. Formed in Akron, Ohio in 2001, The Black Keys have released nine studio albums: their debut The Big Come Up (2002), followed by Thickfreakness (2003) and Rubber Factory (2004), along with their releases on Nonesuch Records, Magic Potion (2006), Attack & Release (2008), Brothers (2010), El Camino (2011), Turn Blue (2014) and, most recently, “Let’s Rock” (2019). The band has won six Grammy Awards and headlined festivals including Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Governors Ball. Ten years after they pulled up their stakes and moved south to Nashville, leaving their gritty post-industrial hometown of Akron, Ohio, the birth place of rubber companies, waffle cones, oatmeal, and LeBron James; Patrick Carney and Dan Auerbach are back, at least metaphorically. On their ninth album “Let’s Rock” the city of Akron is a silent partner, a third member on a recording that returns the duo to the straightforward, primitivism of their early canon, back to those days when Carney worshipped the Stooges, and Auerbach was enamored with Link Wray and the original James Gang guitarist Glenn Schwartz. “What version of me do you see on this record?” singer, guitarist Dan Auerbach asks rhetorically from Easy Eye Sound Studio. “You see the Dan Auerbach who saw Link Wray when he was eighteen, and who went and saw Glenn Schwartz every week at Hooples [in Akron]. Glenn Schwartz was our own religious version of Link Wray. That was how I got turned on to crazy ass, weird ass rock and roll when I was a kid. That made such an impact on me. And it still does…” he trails off. So much so, that before Schwartz’s death in November 2018, Auerbach along with Joe Walsh, recorded with Schwartz. “Joe and I spent a few days in the studio playing Glenn’s songs, all his All Saved Freak Band songs from 1970 and 1971. Before that I didn’t realize how much I’ve been informed by Glenn when we made the earlier Black Keys records. It’s this weird Midwestern rock and roll thing and how this rock and roll is got in my blood. But I can say doing that session with Glenn and Joe primed me for doing a Black Keys record. I made that religious record with Glenn and Joe and I literally went to church, and made the Black Keys record right after.” Explains Auerbach. “It was the perfect thing to get me into this record.” Inspired by the fiery eccentric guitar of his hero, urged along by Patrick Carney’s impatient intuitive stutter drumming, the duo have turned out what is perhaps their best work, minimalist and no frills in its execution, they’ve created the kind of insistent sounds that makes you want to drive over the speed limit on the Innerbelt as you roll out of town in your Road Dominator in search of big adventure. Or maybe just a little relief from suburban boredom. After the nuanced, pensive psychedelic

November 2019

The Black Keys Perform at Toyota Center November 12 melancholy of 2014’s Turn Blue, perhaps the biggest factor in the sound of “Let’s Rock” was that Auerbach and Carney fell back in love with the electric guitar co-producing an unpretentious blues worshipping assault record that reminds you that rock is supposed to be unpredictable, dangerous, and in your face. “I love big and dumb songs,” admits Carney. “They’re my favorite. I think on this record Dan and I came to a similar place in terms of what we wanted. I was sitting in my studio for the last year just playing electric guitar, and for the first time in a while, Dan was playing a lot of electric guitar. The record is like a homage to electric guitar. It’s all it is. Then, there’s these cool solos and there’s barely any drum fills. We took a simple approach and trimmed all the fat like we used to.” The title itself came about serendipitously, and Auerbach shares, “we were in the studio, and we saw the news that the first person in Tennessee to die by electric chair in eleven years is about to be executed. They asked him if he had any last words before they pulled the switch, and he said, ‘Let’s Rock.’ I saw it as a sign, so we decided to call the album that, with an electric chair on the cover.” But despite all of the Black Keys’ success over the 20 years they’ve been together–each of their albums surpassing the next: 2010’s Brothers debuted at No. 3, then 2011’s El Camino went straight to No. 2, and 2016’s Turn Blue debuted at No. 1–they earned 10 Grammy nominations, four Grammys and four multi-platinum records, they haven’t changed that sharply honed Midwestern edge. And why would they want to? “Now we’re basically like a prison shank turned into a ginsu blade,” laughs Auerbach. You can hear it from the first unhinged yowl that opens up “Lo/Hi,” a fretful portent about the claustrophobic dangers of modern isolation, sets a formidable pace. The disembodied, swampy chorus on “Tell Me Lies”; the eccentric “Walk Across Water,” which rivals the lyricism of Prince’s “I Wanna Be Your Lover” or Hendrix’s “The Wind Cries Mary”; the raw prickly threat of “Under the Gun,” recalling great underground rock bands like Question Mark & the Mysterians, Paul Revere & the Raiders, the 13th Floor Elevators, and, especially, Cleveland, Ohio’s James Gang—they all make you realize this isn’t music for the faint of heart. It’s a call to action, a cau-

tionary tale, a breakdown that leads to breakthrough, and mostly a record that was itching to be made. No matter that it took five years to get it done. No wonder, either—a relentless touring and recording schedule had sapped their energy. “After Turn Blue I was totally burned out, one hundred percent,” admits Auerbach. “I had lived in Nashville for seven years and I hadn’t spent any time there. I had a studio and I would make sporadic records here and there, and I just knew that I needed to take some time. I stopped cold turkey, told everybody I’d cleared the schedule completely. I needed some time to create. Playing arenas felt like some kind of a distant dream. But having said that, I think before every great Keys record, we take time off.” Carney concurs, “It was three years basically from the time we played our last show to the time we started this record. The break was, at times, very frustrating for me, but at the same time ultimately it was the right thing to do, right to walk away from that at that time and just live life, basically. “I really liked laying back,” Auerbach says, although the term is hardly appropriate to a period in which he formed the Easy Eye Sound record label in 2017, named after his studio, which has become home to a wide range of artists including Yola, Shannon & The Clams, Dee White, Shannon Shaw, Sonny Smith, Robert Finley, and The Gibson Brothers; it also has released the posthumous album by Leo Bud Welch as well as previously unreleased material by Link Wray. During this time Auerbach also produced a records for The Pretenders as well as Cage The Elephant’s Tell Me I’m Pretty, which won a Grammy for Best Rock Album, and collaborated with the likes of The Memphis Boys, and A$AP Rocky. His time was thoroughly occupied. As was Carney’s, producing records for Calvin Johnson, Michelle Branch, Damns of the West, Tobias Jesso Jr., Jessy Wilson, Tennis, repeat repeat, Wild Belle, Sad Planets, Turbo Fruits, and more. He also created the theme music for the Netflix show BoJack Horseman with his late uncle, Ralph Carney. “Dan and I ended up making a lot of music with a lot of other people. It wasn’t like we were never going to play together, [but] it was like we were at the stage of ‘what’s the point of making another record and then doing the same

tour over and over again,’” says Carney. Instead they developed a new appreciation for each other’s gifts. “That period really cleared my mind, and it made it so much more enjoyable when I got back together with Pat, because we’d had all that time off,” confesses Auerbach. “We’d been onstage doing this over and over and over and over again. But when Pat played with me in Nashville last year at the Easy Eye Revue with Robert Finley, I was like, ‘Oh, shit, what a cool-ass drummer Pat is.’ When we got back together it felt very fresh, and that would have been impossible if we hadn’t taken that time off. I feel like the record is a testament to that feeling.” And without much folderol or ceremony, they started fresh. “It was so easy, like riding a bike, really,” says Auerbach. “We didn’t listen to anything before; our batteries were just charged.” “The way we did it was almost like the same way I quit smoking cigarettes a few months earlier. We just set a date and showed up,” explains Carney. The band stuck to a more “adult” schedule than they had kept for their earlier albums, for instance, when sessions for Brothers went long into the night. They tracked drums and guitar for a week and a half, broke for a month while Dan worked on lyrics, and then worked again for a week in October, a week in November, and a final three days in January. They planned to begin every day at 9am and they’d break at 5pm. “We’d meet there, have coffee, bullshit, make fun of each other. We laughed a shitload making this record. We hadn’t really spent much time together—we’d gone out to lunch a couple times, to dinner a couple times. I was a little bit apprehensive about how it was going to be, just because we hadn’t worked together at all in years. But instantly we’re in there joking around.” No matter what they do individually, in the studio both Auerbach and Carney produce. “We’ve always been equals in the producing part,” explains Auerbach. “From the very first record we made in Pat’s basement until now.” “We went in with no material,” Carney says. “We wrote a song a day, basically, and then it got to the point where there were fifteen songs, some finished, some pretty basic. Then we took a break so Dan could start working on lyrics. We went back in for two or three more weeks over the next three months and ended up writing like twenty-five songs.” “Yup, Pat’s right. We wrote ‘em all on the spot,” says Auerbach. “I didn’t bring anything in, and I didn’t want to overthink it. I wanted it to feel spontaneous. I wanted to be able to record something not dissimilar to ‘Louie Louie’ and be perfectly happy with it. I was looking for the Troggs.” “Funny, I was looking for [the Stooges] ‘Down on the Street,’” laughs Carney. “Mostly, I would just start playing and singing, and the words that would come out of my mouth were the words that were meant to be there, and I would build upon that,” says Auerbach. “But every single song started with a live take.” “I’d probably written 300 songs before we got down to work on this one with all these different songwriters in town, people like John Prine, Pat McLaughlin, Roger Cook, all these amazing people. I’ve gone all over the place with songs, and I have no fear going anywhere. But for the first time, I have no fear of being vulnerable.” “But really, the whole record was just meant to be. And even it was, this is the twosome who could resurrect it. “Without Dan’s drive and ambition I would probably be playing the Grogg Shop [in Akron]. He pushes me and tells me not to overthink, and it works,” confesses Carney. “And you have to admit it really works. That’s the magic in this band. We’re like complimentary colors.” “Pat and I are the Black Keys when we’re together, and we’re not the Black Keys any other time at all,” Auerbach agrees. “But when we’re together we are the Black Keys, that’s where that real magic is.”

Vixen Perform at Warehouse Live November 22 One of Rock’s most formidable all-female bands, Vixen, will be performing this month at Warehouse Live on Friday, November 22nd. Opening act for Vixen will be the all-female metal band, The Iron Maidens, a Tribute To Iron Maiden. Also on the bill is Rozy, so this will be a power-packed evening of all-female rock bands. Vixen was founded in St Paul, MN by guitarist Jan Kuehnemund. Driven by rock star dreams, like so many before her, Kuehnemund packed up her group and headed for Hollywood. Kuehnemund soon re-tooled the lineup to include vocalist Janet Gardner, drummer, Roxy Petrucci, and bassist Share Pedersen (Ross). Vixen quickly built their reputation playing the infamous Sunset Strip and signed a major label deal with EMI. Vixen’s first hit single, “Edge of a Broken Heart” penned by Richard Marx and Fee Waybill (The Tubes) blasted onto the Billboard charts fueled by heavy video rotation on MTV. Their selftitled freshmen LP garnered two more knee droppers with “Cryin’” and “Love made Me” both charting on the Billboard hot 100 top 40. It was the group’s live performances opening for the Scorpions, Ozzy and Bon Jovi that established Vixen as a premiere rock act to be taken seriously. Vixen found commercial success in the late ’80s and early ’90s via singles like “Edge of a Broken Heart,” “Cryin’,” and “How Much Love,” all of which enjoyed heavy rotation on MTV. The group’s popularity waned in the wake of the grunge and alternative rock boom, resulting in frequent hiatuses and line-up changes, but Vixen continued to make new music and perform well into the next century, despite enduring numerous hardships, most notably the 2013 death of founder and guitarist Jan Kuehnemund. The remaining classic line-up members (Janet Gardner, Roxy Petrucci, and Share Pedersen) elected to carry on in Kuehnemund’s honor, and continued to tour, culminating in the release of the concert LP Live Fire in 2018. Vixen paid more than their share of dues on the L.A./Hollywood club scene before signing with EMI in 1987. Vixen’s selftitled debut album came out in 1988, and the LP sold millions thanks in part to the single “Edge of a Broken Heart,” which was penned by Richard Marx and the Tubes’ Fee Waybill. Two other singles, “Cryin’” and “Love Made Me,” charted as well, and the band soon found themselves sharing stages with Bon Jovi, Scorpions, and Ozzy Osbourne. Released in 1990, Vixen’s second album, Rev It Up, had its share of catchy, infectious material, including the hit “How Much Love.” “Rev it Up”, Vixen’s second LP produced the monster rocker “How Much Love”, scorching ballad, “Love is a Killer”’ and the upbeat “Not a Minute Too Soon” cementing their reputation not only as formidable performers, but as hit songwriters. The group Vixenized their fans on worldwide tours with heavyweights Deep Purple and KISS, which fueled the international frenzy. In 1997, Vixen reconvened around Gardner, Petrucci, and guitarist Gina Stile and issued the group’s third studio long player, Tangerine, via CMC International. The comeback proved short-lived, but in 2002 Kuehnemund put together another iteration of the group, recruiting Lynn Louise

Lowrey (bass), Kat Kraft (drums), and Jenna Sanz-Agero (vocals), and released Extended Versions, a recording of their set at 2005’s Sweden Rock Festival, and a new studio album, 2006’s Live & Learn, the latter of which was nominated for Best Album: Hard Rock/Metal for the 2007 Independent Music Awards. In 2012 Kuehnemund reached out to Gardner, Petrucci, and Pedersen in hopes of reuniting the band, but days before going public with the news, she was diagnosed with cancer. She passed away October 10, 2013. The following year saw Gardner, Petrucci, Pedersen, and Gina Stile perform a string of shows both at home and abroad, and in 2018 Vixen released Live Fire, which was recorded at Chicago’s Arcada Theater during the group’s 2017 tour.

Smile Empty Soul Returns To The Scout Bar November 22 Smile Empty Soul is back on tour again and they will be bringing their “ The Oblivion Of Souls” Tour to The Scout Bar this month on Friday, November 22nd. The band is on tour in support of their newest album release, “Oblivion”. In addition to presenting songs from “Oblivion”, the band will also be performing your favorite Smile Empty Soul songs as well. Smile Empty Soul has become known for their constant touring and never-wavering, honest sound and lyrics. Santa Clarita post-grunge band Smile Empty Soul have been kicking it since ’98 and now have seven studio albums (plus three EPs and a compilation album) under their belt. They’ve remained firmly in the underground, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have an impressive legacy and a loyal fanbase. Only singer and guitarist Sean Danielsen remains from the original lineup, but last year’s Oblivion proves that there’s still gas in the tank. Oblivion is the seventh full-length album by Smile Empty Soul. It is the first and only album with new bassist Mark Young and drummer Victor Ribas. The singles from the album include “Sides” and “Stars”, On the album’s release, it was ranked #5 on iTunes for Rock Albums. Since the release, Mark Young has left the band. “’Sides’ feels like a grungy throwback to me and that’s really a style of music I

find myself missing tremendously these days,” says vocalist/guitarist Sean Danielsen. “There was a pure and honest quality to the grunge scene that I’d love to see make a comeback.” Smile Empty Soul is a heavy alternative trio formed while its three members were still in Santa Clarita, California high schools in 1998. Led by singer/guitarist Sean Danielson, the band also included drummer Derek Gledhill and bassist Ryan Martin. After honing their sound with numerous hometown gigs, Smile Empty Soul began venturing to the Sunset Strip, and eventually passed a demo to Todd Parker of the Los Angeles indie label ThroBack Records. That exposure led to a deal with Jason Flom’s Lava imprint, which was expanding in the wake of early signee Kid Rock’s

November 2019

white-hot success. The trio hooked up with producer John Lewis Parker, who was at the helm for their self-titled debut, issued by Lava in May 2003. With its screeching guitars and Danielson’s rage-filled vocals, the album was indebted to the alternative sounds of the early ’90s. As the band recorded their follow-up in 2005, Gledhill parted ways with the band and Dominic Weir temporarily filled his position before he was subsequently replaced by Jake Kilmer. They also recruited guitarist Mike Booth (Cold). Anxiety was scheduled for release in 2005, but a split with Lava kept the album from seeing the light of day. Their de facto sophomore LP, the freshly recorded Vultures, was re-

leased in 2006. After promotional touring for the album, Booth amicably parted ways with the band. In 2009, Anxiety was finally released through their own MRAfia Records label (along with a bonus DVD version, More Anxiety). The band also released their fourth full-length, Consciousness. In 2012, Smile Empty Soul released a fifth album, the sharply polished 3’s, on eOne Records. It was quickly followed by Chemicals (Two Disciples/Pavement). In early 2016, they released the Shapeshifter EP, which was split between re-recordings of hits from their debut, as well as three new songs.

Ezra Charles Performs at The Big Easy Ezra Charles brought his piano and hot band to The Big Easy tonight for one rockin’ show. Ezra has been performing around Houston all his life and has moved from one genre to the next with great ease, but this is the Ezra Charles we’ve come to love. He is very reminiscent of the famous Jerry Lee Lewis, but Ezra is definitely in a class all his own. His show tonight was superb. From the Blues to even a little Honky Tonky, Ezra captured the hearts of the crowd there as he always does. Ezra actually started out the early age of 14 when he joined a band called Johnny and The Jammers, which was formed by Johnny and Edgar Winter. Since then he has been going strong. He is also the inventor of the famous Helpinstill Piano Pickup, which has been a staple of the music industry for many years now. His first customer was actually Elton John. Ezra Charles has twice represented the Houston Blues Society at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. After winning local competitions, his band competed in the Band division in 2011, reaching the Semi-finals level. And in 2015, he and his son Jake (on drums) participated in the Solo/Duo category as the Houston representative. Jake is still a member of his band. Ezra is also famous for flashy piano antics, and all-girl horn sections, his solid songwriting has carried the band through ever-evolving styles, from Rockabilly to Swing to Gulf-Coast-flavored horn-band Blues. If you haven’t seen Ezra yet, make sure to put this one on your bucket list. You’ll be glad you did! You can start watching this video right now on our YouTube site, houstonmusicnewstv1.

Josh Garrett Performs at The Big Easy When we saw that Josh Garrett was going to be in town over at The Big Easy, we headed over there for some great “Blues” action. Josh is a really good guitarist and really plays some tasty tunes. Josh Garrett has been entertaining audience all over the country for the last five years with his own style of Louisiana Blues. Garrett’s style is a mixture of LA Blues, New Orleans Funk, Zydeco, and Rock ‘n’ Roll. “I’m drawn to all things Louisiana, it’s my culture and I try to embrace it,” says Garrett. He received an old acoustic guitar from his father when he was eleven years old. “[The guitar] was an old ’76 Alvarez. It was his guitar and he gave it to me. I was glad to get it and I haven’t put it down since.” say Garrett. And we’re certainly glad he didn’t. This guy is hot. Josh Garrett has become known for his soulful vocals, emotion infused guitar styling, and that South Louisiana flavor that only comes from those with Louisiana in there blood. His show this night at The Big Easy was a helluva lot of fun. We certainly had a lot of fun, as well as the packed house of fans he brought in. I didn’t think the audience was going to let him leave the stage. They just wanted more and more, and he obliged them. Great show. If you get a chance to see him, please do. In the meantime you will just have to be satisfied with the video we have posted on Houstonmusicnewstv1 on YouTube.

MUSIC NEWS

As I Lay Dying Perform at the House Of Blues As I Lay Dying have just announced a month-long U.S. tour with support from After the Burial and Emmure. The run of dates will begin Nov. 15 in Las Vegas and finish up Dec. 14 in San Diego, Calif. They will be bringing their “Shaped By Fire” Tour to Houston’s House Of Blues on November 19th. The band is touring in support of their new album, “Shaped By Fire.” Shaped by Fire is the seventh studio album by American metalcore band As I Lay Dying. It was released on September 20, 2019 through Nuclear Blast. The album was produced by the band themselves and is the followup to the group’s sixth album, Awakened (2012). It is also the first album in seven years after the band went on an indefinite hiatus in 2014 when Tim Lambesis was incarcerated and sentenced to six years in prison for soliciting the murder of his estranged wife. After Lambesis was released from prison on probation in December 2016, he began reaching out to the other members of the band looking to apologize in person starting with Mancino and Gilbert. After that he attempted to reconnect with Sgrosso and Hipa and eventually all four of them forgave him. On April 12, 2019, the band released a music video for “Redefined”, including a guest appearance by August Burns Red frontman Jake Luhrs. On April 14, the band announced the “Shaped by Fire” tour of Europe with support from Chelsea Grin, Unearth and Fit for a King running from September 2019 and concluding in October. On July 15, the band announced the North American dates of the “Shaped by Fire” Tour with direct support from After the Burial and Emmure to begin on November 15 at the House of Blues in Las Vegas and conclude on December 14 with a hometown show at the Soma San Diego. Details of the album, Shaped by Fire, were leaked through Nuclear Blast’s European website with a projected release date. On August 9, the band officially announced their album, Shaped by Fire, would be released through Nuclear Blast Records, along with releasing the album’s title track. On September 13, the band released “Blinded” as the album’s fourth single along with an accompanying music video. The album sold 9,175 copies in its first week of release. Since returning last summer with “My Own Grave,” As I Lay Dying have been heavily embraced by the metal community. Their reunion was somewhat controversial due to vocalist Tim Lambesis’ murder-for-hire conviction after attempting to have his estranged wife murdered, but after serving three-and-a-half years of a six-year sentence, Lambesis was released and has since been focused on redeeming himself. San Diego’s As I Lay Dying are a charting, Grammy-nominated metalcore band whose sound employs elements of melodic death, grindcore, and hooky classic metal. They are influenced by a plethora of legacy acts ranging from Megadeth and Iron Maiden to Fear Factory and Cannibal Corpse, to name a few. Since initially emerging as a Christian guitar/drums/vocals trio (whose lyrics never reflected their beliefs) with their highly regarded, self-recorded full-length Beneath the Encasing of Ashes in 2001, they signed to Metal Blade and became a quintet whose brutal attack and meaty riffs drew legions of fans across the globe, making them a festival headliner. Their 2007 longplayer, An Ocean Between Us, debuted at number eight on the Top 200. In addition to their music, As I Lay Dying gained undesired notoriety for a more infamous reason. In 2014 the band split after founder and lead singer Tim Lambesis was charged with felony solicitation of murder after hiring an undercover detective to kill his estranged wife. Convicted after changing a not guilty plea to guilty, he was sentenced to six years in prison and served two. Remarkably, As I Lay Dying’s members, who had previously sworn never to work with the singer again, reunited with him in 2018 and released Shaped by Fire for Nuclear Blast the following year. The group formed as a trio in 2001 with vocalist Tim Lambesis, drummer Jordan Mancino, and guitarist Evan White, and shortly thereafter released Beneath the Encasing of Ashes. A split CD with the American Tragedy followed the next year. In 2003 the band signed with Metal Blade and released Frail Words Collapse. After the album’s release, White left the band and the remaining core of the group, Lambesis and Mancino, drafted two guitarists to replace him, Phil Sgrosso and Nick Hipa, and also landed a bass player in Clint Norris. The new lineup recorded Shadows Are Security, released in 2005. As I Lay Dying

next issued A Long March: The First Recordings in May 2006, which included their 2001 out-ofprint debut, along with two versions of their songs from the 2002 American Tragedy split. The band then spent that summer on the Sounds of the Underground metal-hardcore tour alongside acts like In Flames, GWAR, Trivium, and Cannibal Corpse. Soon after, Clint Norris left to pursue life as a family man and Josh Gilbert replaced him on bass. With the addition of Gilbert’s vocal harmonies, the band’s sound became more melodic, and in August 2007, the group released its fourth album, An Ocean Between Us. In 2009, the band released a three-DVD collection called This Is Who We Are. The set included a documentary, a live gig, and assorted videos and tidbits. Arriving as it did after a two-year hiatus, it was welcomed enthusiastically by the band’s near fanatical fan base. In 2010, As I Lay Dying returned to record store shelves proper when the band issued the 11-cut Powerless Rise on Metal Blade. The next year, to commemorate their tenth anniversary as a band, As I Lay Dying released the compilation Decas, which featured the band covering songs by influential acts like Slayer and Judas Priest, as well as some new material and remixes. In 2012, the band hit the studio with punk icon and producer Bill Stevenson to record its sixth album, Awakened, which arrived on Metal Blade later that year. On May 7, 2013, Lambesis was arrested in California after hiring an undercover detective to murder his estranged wife, the mother of his children. Though he initially pled not guilty, he later changed his plea to guilty. Before he pled guilty, though, Mancino, Sgrosso, Hipa, Gilbert, and vocalist Shane Blay formed another musical project under the name Wovenwar and played an entirely different style of music. Amazingly, Lambesis also found time to release Triple Brutal by his own side project Austrian Death Machine while awaiting trial. After altering his plea agreement, Lambesis was sentenced to six years in May of 2014. After years of reaching out to his former bandmates to make amends (that eventually resulted in some strained personal relationships that split Wovenwar), Lambesis eventually won them over and the lineup of himself, Hipa, Sgrosso, Gilbert, and Mancino reunited under the As I Lay Dying banner. The singer’s bandmates posted a long state-

ment concerning their reasons for reuniting in the metal press and on social media. As I Lay Dying played their first reunion show in June in San Diego. They booked European and American tours (most dates sold out immediately), though some venues on both sides of the pond either declined to book them outright or dropped them afterwards

due to protests from other bands and patrons. After signing a deal with Nuclear Blast, the band issued the single “Redefined” (featuring Jake Luhrs of August Burns Red) in April of 2019, and their first full length in seven years, with the self-produced Shaped by Fire in September.

Comprised of Caillat, fiancé Justin Kawika Young, songwriter Jason Reevesand his wife Nelly Joy, Gone West has music that instantly puts you in the best mood no matter what’s happening around you. Blending sounds from the beach to the Midwest, the band’s debut EP has something for everyone and is an absolute must-listen. “We love to use acoustic instruments and steel guitar which originally came from Hawaii where Justin is from,” Reeves tells Celeb Secrets Country. “But really we just want to sing songs that are authentic and make people feel less alone. If we could make people less alone in any way when they are listening to our music, that is our ultimate goal.” The four have collaborated musically for fourteen years, but it was while on a personal break from one of the most musical pop breakthroughs of the last several years, Caillat and her fiancée Young decided to head to Nashville where Caillat’s frequent co-writer Reeves was living with his wife Nelly Joy. Suddenly a creative incubator for four friends turned into Gone West, a fresh harmony, breezy melody group whose myriad influences landed somewhere between Laurel Canyon, Texas roadhouses, Appalachia’s harmony and the plains of the Midwest. In a short time, they were invited to perform at the Grand Ole Opry and signed to Triple Tigers.

Kingdom Collapse Perform at The 19th Hole San Antonio’s Kingdom Collapse performs this night at The 19th Hole. We told you about them last month in our online issue, but we’re going to recap a little here for those of you that missed that story. Kingdom Collapse’s sound is melodic, heavy riff-based modern metal with a catchy rock twist, combining the heavy elements of metal with the dynamics and emotion of rock. On “Payback,” Kingdom Collapse stays true to their elements of heavy-hitting guitar riffs and catchy melodies. Says singer Jonathan Norris, “Payback is a true anthem for the underdog. The person that has always turned the other cheek. The person that has always kept their mouth shut.” Kingdom Collapse is currently working on new material with Ted Bruner (Three Days Grace, Katy Perry, Hinder), which is scheduled for release in the new year. Kingdom Collapse amassed over one million YouTube views and over 200,000 Spotify streams with their 2018 single, “Suffer.” We’ve got three videos from this show to share with you right now on houstonmusicnewstv1 on youtube, so you can start watching them anytime. Local Gulf Coast Legend Bert Wills dropped by Katie’s this night to put on a really spectacular show. Bert has been active musically in the Gulf Coast since the late 60s. His band, Bert Wills and the Cryin’ Shames was one of the most popular acts around for many years. Texas guitar legend Bert Wills got his start playing waterfront bars from Galveston to Kemah. Guitarist, singer and songwriter Bert Wills has referred to himself in song as a rambler on a lonesome highway, an outsider looking in, a prisoner and many other things of rich metaphorical value. His show this night at Katie’s was a lot of fun as Bert brought his one-man show to the club there. Bert performed many of his old standards as well as a few covers and the audience there loved it. So did we. The show was great! We’ve got a video from this show to share with you right now, so if you tune into Houstonmusicnewstv1 on YouTube, you can start watching it now.

Khris was there at the time it had started and was doing body suspension with a group called AGRO. After a short time Khris was brought on by Jason and Kristen of the show Punkstar Full Throttle to do an interview on body suspension for the community. Shortly after that time he was running a group called Agro Sideshow, and doing live performances around the area as well as in a few shows out of town along with bands. Khris was added as a full-time radio host for Punkstar Full Throttle. Moving the show to Scout Bar, Khris had full control of stage, lights, and sound. Thomas gave Punkstar every Wednesday to showcase local talent. Khris has been there now for over 6 years doing the show. Kansas Perform at Smart Financial Centre Kansas will mark the 40th anniversary of their hit 1977 Point of Know Return album with a run of tour dates featuring complete performances of the track listing in addition to hits and fan favorites. Kansas will be making an appearance in the Houston area at Smart Financial Centre on Thursday, December 7th. The group’s Point of Know Return anniversary dates follow an anniversary tour in honor of that album’s predecessor, 1976’s Leftoverture; together, this period in Kansas’ live history honors one of the more commercially and critically successful eras in the band’s long career. As guitarist Rich Williams pointed out in a press release, it’s all one long opportunity to celebrate with fans. “After the success of the album Leftoverture, it was hard to imagine when we released Point of Know Return that this album would be even bigger, but it was,” said Williams. “From the album artwork to the song ‘Dust in the Wind,’ the album Point of Know Return is really ingrained in rock ‘n’ roll history and even in popular culture. The past two years we have done around 80 select shows performing the album Leftoverture in its entirety. We have been blown away by the positive fan response. Our hope is that fans will enjoy this Point of Know Return Tour just as much, and hopefully even more!” For singer Ronnie Platt, who entered the lineup in 2014 after the departure of original vocalist Steve Walsh, the tour offers a chance to perform some of his personal favorites — as well as lead the band through some pretty deep cuts. “I often joke that I cannot be in charge of putting together a set list, because there are too many songs that I really want to perform. These shows, though, will be about as close as it gets,” added Platt. “Of course, there will be hits like ‘Carry On Wayward Son,’ but to know we will be performing songs that Kansas has not per-

formed live for twenty or thirty years, or even ever, that is just really exciting. It is going to be a lot of fun.” With a legendary career spanning more than four decades, Kansas has firmly established itself as one of America’s iconic of classic rock bands. This “garage band” from Topeka released their debut album in 1974 after being discovered by Wally Gold, who worked for Don Kirshner, and have gone on to sell more than 30 million albums worldwide. Composing a catalogue that includes fifteen studio albums and five live albums, Kansas has produced eight gold albums, three sextuplePlatinum albums (Leftoverture, Point of Know Return, Best of Kansas), one platinum live album (Two for the Show), and two one millionselling gold singles, Carry On Wayward Son and Dust in the Wind. Kansas appeared on the Billboard charts for over 200 weeks throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s and played to sold-out arenas and stadiums throughout North America, Europe and Japan. Carry On Wayward Son continues to be one of the top five most played songs on classic rock radio, and Dust In the Wind has been played on the radio more than three million times! Fusing the complexity of British prog rock with an American heartland sound representative of their name, Kansas were among the most popular bands of the late ’70s, with many of their hits becoming staples of AOR radio playlists. Formed in Topeka in 1970, the founding members of the group — guitarist Kerry Livgren, bassist Dave Hope, and drummer Phil Ehart — first played together while in high school; with the 1971 addition of classically trained violinist Robbie Steinhardt, they changed their name to White Clover, reverting back to the Kansas moniker for good upon the 1972 arrivals of vocalist/ keyboardist Steve Walsh and guitarist Richard Williams. The group spent the early part of the decade touring relentlessly and struggling for

recognition; initially, their mix of boogie and prog rock baffled club patrons, but in due time they established a strong enough following to win a record deal with the Kirshner label. Kansas’ self-titled debut LP appeared in 1974; while only mildly successful, the group toured behind it tirelessly, and their fan base grew to the point that their third effort, 1975’s Masque, sold a quarter of a million copies. In 1976, Leftoverture truly catapulted Kansas to stardom. On the strength of the smash hit “Carry on Wayward Son,” the album reached the Top Five and sold over three million copies. Released in 1977, Point of Know Return was even more successful, spawning the monster hit “Dust in the Wind.” While the 1978 live LP Two for the Show struggled to break the Top 40, its studio followup, Monolith, the band’s first self-produced effort, reached the Top Ten. That same year, Walsh issued a solo record, Schemer-Dreamer. In the wake of 1980’s Audio-Visions, Kansas began to splinter; both Hope and Livgren became born-again Christians, the latter issuing

the solo venture Seeds of Change, and their newfound spirituality caused divisions within the band’s ranks. Walsh soon quit to form a new band, Streets; the remaining members forged on without him, tapping vocalist John Elefante as his replacement. The first Kansas LP without Walsh, 1982’s Vinyl Confessions, launched the hit “Play the Game Tonight,” but after only one more album, 1983’s Drastic Measures, they disbanded. In 1986, however, Kansas re-formed around Ehart, Williams, and Walsh; adding the famed guitarist Steve Morse as well as bassist Billy Greer, the refurbished band debuted with the album Power, scoring a Top 20 hit with “All I Wanted.” When the follow-up, 1988’s In the Spirit of Things, failed to hit, seven years passed before the release of their next effort, Freaks of Nature. The London Symphony-assisted Always Never the Same followed in 1998, and in 2000 Kansas issued Somewhere to Elsewhere, their continued on next page

Don Felder Performs at Dosey Doe December 5th & 6th Former Eagles guitarist, Don Felder will be performing for two night, December 5th and 6th at Dosey Doe in The Woodlands. Don is currently touring in support of his new album “American Rock ‘n’ Roll”. It’s been seven years since Felder released any new material and Felder’s “American Rock ‘N’ Roll” is worth the wait. With nimble fingers and an enviable collection of rock’s most esteemed musicians, it’s a veritable who’s who in rock and roll and showcases all of Felder’s best tricks. Musicians like Richie Sambora, Peter Frampton, Joe Satriani, Chad Smith, Slash, Mick Fleetwood and Sammy Hagar all guest on the record and bring own talents, own intensity, own history to the record to the project. In a recent interview with EU magazine, Felder said, “It took me two and a half years in the studio to make this record. I’m on the road somewhere between two and a half and three weeks a month, so it’s hard to make a record when you’re out on the road doing live shows and there are so many different guests. Trying to get someone like Slash to play on the record when he’s out on tour with Guns ‘N Roses, you’ve got to kind of base that song around his schedule. Mick Fleetwood plays drums on it and Chad Smith plays drums on it too and to coordinate all these schedules was really hard and it took longer than the production process. If I had just used a bunch of local session guys, I could probably get it done in four or five months. But that wasn’t the point of having all of these people that I know and that I love the way they play and being able to select the most appropriate players for a specific song. Slash was the perfect guy to play on “American Rock ‘N’ Roll.” Frampton was the most perfect guy to play on the song “The Way Things Have to Be”.” Don Felder is renowned as a former lead guitarist of The Eagles, one of the most popular and influential rock groups of our time. The band?s record-setting compilation Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) sold over 29 million copies in the U.S. alone and was awarded by the RIAA the top-selling album of the 20th Century. Currently Don and the Eagles have sold more than 83.5 million albums. A member of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1998, Felder served as a member of The Eagles for 27 years, putting his mark on numerous Eagles milestones. Felder originated the music and co-wrote The Eagles? biggest hit – the iconic, Grammy-studded smash “Hotel California” – along with fan favorites like “Victim of Love” and “Those Shoes”. He became immediately celebrated for his lyrical, signature guitar work on legendary songs like “Hotel California,” “One of These Nights,” “New Kid In Town,” and numerous more. “Hotel California” was recently voted the Number 1 best 12 string guitar song in the world by Guitar World magazine. In addition to his work with The Eagles, Felder has performed and recorded with music legends from many genres, including The Bee Gees, Peter Frampton, Michael Jackson, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, Elton John, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Vince Gill, Diana Ross, and Barbra Streisand. Don left the band in 2001 and has since forged an impressive career as a top-tier solo artist with a trio of fully realized full-length albums, 1983’s sonically soaring Airborne, and 2012’s multifaceted song-cycle treatise, Road to Forever and his newest release, Amerian Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Felder added “best-selling author” to his impressive C.V. when his spellbinding 2008 memoir, Heaven and Hell: My Life in the Eagles (1974 – 2001), became an instant New York Times bestseller. Having already established himself on both coasts as a seasoned session player and touring guitarist, Don Felder made his debut as a member of the Eagles in 1974, bringing his influence and fluid rock chops to some of band’s best-known material. Joining Glenn Frey and later Joe Walsh, Felder was part of one of rock & roll’s great guitar batteries whose signature harmonic sound — particularly on the Felderpenned “Hotel California” — helped usher in the Eagles’ most commercially successful era. Following their breakup in 1980, he resumed his role as a sessionman, racking up a number of high-profile credits while also composing for film and releasing a solo album. Felder rejoined the Eagles during their reunions of the mid- and late ’90s before becoming embroiled in a tumultuous legal battle with bandmembers Frey and Don Henley following his 2001 firing from the group. He later toured with his own Don Felder Band and released two more solo outings, the latter of which, 2019’s American Rock & Roll, featured an impressive array of well-known guests from the rock community. Born on September 21, 1947 in Gainesville, Florida, Felder discovered rock & roll via an Elvis Presley TV appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, which led to Felder picking up the guitar at the age of 11. Throughout his teenage years, Felder played in various groups (including the Continentals, which at separate times, also featured Stephen Stills and future Eagles bandmate Bernie Leadon). After the band split up, Felder relocated up to New York, where he appeared on an obscure self-titled debut by a group called Flow, in 1970. Although the group split up soon after, Felder kept his chops up by playing with others, and in the process, mastered several different musical styles. Tired of the New York scene, Felder relocated once more, to Boston, where he worked steadily in a recording studio for two years — picking up pointers on how to make records via engineer work. When old friend Leadon came through town with his new band, country-rockers the Eagles, Felder joined the group for an on-stage jam session, and took Leadon’s advice regarding relocating to California, where a vast amount of session work beckoned. Felder made the trip in 1972, and spent the next year recording and touring with folk singer/songwriter David Blue. Afterwards, Felder was invited to serve as a touring guitarist for Graham Nash, but when he was asked to join the Eagles, he accepted (even though he suspected the band wouldn’t last for much longer, due to inter-band hostility). Felder contributed guitar to such hit Eagles albums as 1974’s On the Border and One of These Nights, but the band was still searching for the missing piece to their puzzle. The missing link turned out to be guitarist Joe Walsh, who replaced Leadon and contributed to the Eagles’ massive hit, 1976’s Hotel California, which became one of the best-selling albums of all time. After an oft-delayed follow-up was issued in 1979, The Long Run, and its ensuing supporting tour wrapped up (documented on 1980’s Eagles Live), the Eagles announced they were splitting up in 1982. Felder subsequently contributed solo tracks to the motion picture

soundtracks for Heavy Metal and Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and even issued a starstudded solo full-length in 1983, Airborne (which included contributions from Kenny Loggins, Dave Mason, and Timothy B. Schmit, among others). In the wake of the Eagles’ split and his solo release, Felder kept himself busy by guesting on other artists’ albums, including the Bee Gees’ Living Eyes, Stevie Nicks’ Bella Donna and Wild Heart, Diana Ross’ Eaten Alive, Bob Seger’s Distance, Joe Walsh’s There Goes the Neighborhood and You Bought It, You Name It, plus Robin Zander’s self-titled release. But for the better part of the late ’80s and early ’90s, Felder shied away from the music biz, while rumors of an impending full-on Eagles reunion tour began to circulate. The rumors eventually proved to be fact in the spring of 1994, when the group reunited for an MTV concert taping (released the same year as Hell Freezes Over), featuring old tunes alongside a pair of new compositions. The group’s ensuing tour proved to be a blockbuster success, but a rumored all-new studio album by the reunited group failed to materialize. Along with all former and current mem-

bers of the Eagles, Felder performed at their 1998 induction to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and remained a member until 2001 when he left the band. Since leaving the Eagles, Don Felder has been touring with his own group, the Don Felder Band, and in 2012, nearly three decades after his solo debut, he released a follow-up album, Road to Forever. Over the next few years he and his group toured alongside other veteran rock acts like Foreigner, Styx, and REO Speedwagon while he wrote material for his next album. Released in 2019, American Rock & Roll was an inclusive and celebratory set that included a lengthy guest list of rock notables from Slash and Sammy Hagar to Bob Weir, Mick Fleetwood, and Alex Lifeson.

Kansas Perform at Smart Financial Centre continued from page 26 14th studio album, which saw the return of founder singer/songwriter Kerry Livgren. The next decade found Kansas continuing to tour heavily and release compilations and live albums, culminating in their 2014 induction into the Kansas Hall of Fame and the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, which coincided with the group’s 40th anniversary. Miracles Out of Nowhere, a DVD/ CD career retrospective, followed in early 2015.

After signing with Century Media’s InsideOut label, Kansas released The Prelude Implicit in 2016. Their 15th studio effort overall, the progheavy LP also marked the band’s first new album in 16 years. The following year saw the release of Leftoverture Live & Beyond, a collection of concert performances culled from their 40th anniversary tour.
