This is Josh’s first tour since his soldout Stages Tour 2015/2016 and joining him throughout the tour is Tony-Award winning, multi-platinum recording artist and actress, Idina Menzel. Josh Groban: Bridges Tour kicks off in Duluth, Georgia on October 18th and will hit over 17 cities around the country before wrapping up in New York, New York at the famed Madison Square Garden on November 18th. “I can’t wait to get back on the road and play old and new songs for my fans,’ Groban says. ‘It’s the thing I most look forward to. Creating a show each tour that gives everyone there, including me, an experience they want to hold onto.” Groban has recently been in New York filming the new Netflix series, The Good Cop, where he plays the lead opposite Tony Danza. Simultaneously he is also working on his eighth studio album to be released later in 2018. On Valentine’s Day, Groban gave fans a taste of his new song Symphony, from the forthcoming album. Possessing one of the most outstanding and instantly recognizable voices in music, GRAMMY nominated singer, songwriter, and actor Josh Groban has entertained fans across the globe with his multi-platinum albums and DVDs (over 30 million sold worldwide), electrifying live performances, and comedic film and television appearances. The 36-year-old Los Angeles native is the only artist who has had two albums appear on the Top 20 Best-Selling Albums list of the past decade, according to Billboard. He has appeared in the feature films Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hollars, Coffee Town, and Muppets Most Wanted, as well as on NBC’s The Office, FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and CBS’ The Crazy Ones. Groban has released seven studio albums, his 2001 self-titled 5x-platinum debut, 2003’s 6x-platinum Closer, 2006’s double-platinum Awake, 2007’s 6x platinum Grammy-nominated Noel, 2010’s gold-certified Illuminations, and 2013’s gold-certified All That Echoes, which

debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, giving Groban his first No. 1 debut and third chart-topper. In 2017, Groban concluded his Broadway run in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, which Time Out New York called, “one of the best musicals of the decade”. He also released his first coffee table book, Stage to Stage: My Journey to Broadway. which documented the past two years of his life on Broadway. Groban remains an active arts education philanthropist and advocate as a member of Americans for the Arts Artists Committee and Groban’s Find Your Light Foundation helps enrich the lives of young people through arts, education, and cultural awareness. Currently, Groban is filming the new Netflix series, The Good Cop, starring opposite Tony Danza, and working on his eighth studio album due out later this year. Gifted with a warm voice, superb technique, and a wide vocal range that allows him to sing both tenor arias and more baritonefriendly pop standards, singer Josh Groban rose to stardom in the early 2000s as one of the leading classical crossover artists of his generation. Although classically trained, Groban’s eclectic taste found him investigating a wide array of styles from opera, bluegrass, and folk to his own original melodic pop compositions. After emerging in 1999 as a stand-in for opera star Andrea Bocelli at a series of events, he found wide acclaim and commercial success with albums like his selftitled 2001 debut and 2003’s multi-platinumselling Closer. He also scored hits like 2001’s “To Where You Are,” which spent two weeks atop Billboard’s Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart. Similarly, his cover of Secret Garden’s “You Raise Me Up” spent six weeks at number one on the adult contemporary chart in 2004, and his single “Believe,” from the Polar Express soundtrack, spent five weeks on the same chart. His popularity opened other avenues, including acting roles on TV’s Ally McBeal and in films like 2011’s Crazy, Stupid, Love and 2014’s Muppets Most Wanted. Despite his diverse skill set, music remains his anchor, and recordings like 2007’s holiday album Noel and 2015’s Broadway-themed Stages have kept him at the top of the charts.

Johnny Rivers Performs at Arena Theater October 26 Johnny Rivers will be returning to Houston this month, October 26th at The Arena Theatre. Rivers enjoyed a succession of pop hits in the 60s and 70s, initially by remaking earlier R&B songs and eventually with his own compositions. His singles were spirited creations, some recorded live in front of an enthusiastic, hip Los Angeles audience. The singer’s father moved the family to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1945, where his son began playing guitar at the age of eight. By the age of 13, having become enamoured of the local rock ‘n’ roll and R&B artists, he was fronting his own group. In 1958, Ramistella ventured to New York to make his first recording. Top disc jockey Alan Freed met the singer and gave him his new name, Johnny Rivers, and also recommended to the local Gone Records label that they sign Rivers. They did, and his first single, ‘Baby, Come Back’, was issued that year. At 17 Rivers moved to Nashville, where he wrote songs with another aspiring singer, Roger Miller, and recorded demo records for Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and others, including Ricky Nelson, who recorded Rivers’ ‘Make Believe’ in 1960. Rivers relocated to Los Angeles at that time. Between 1959 and his 1964 signing to Imperial Records he recorded singles for small labels such as Guyden, Cub and Dee Dee, as well as the larger Chancellor, Capitol Records, MGM Records, Coral Records and

United Artists Records, none with any chart success. In late 1963 Rivers began performing a three-night stand at the LA club Gazzari’s, which was so successful it was extended for weeks. He then took up residency at the popular discotheque the Whisky A-Go-Go, where his fans began to include such stars as Johnny Carson, Steve McQueen and Rita Hayworth. His first album for Imperial, At The Whisky A Go Go, was released in the summer of 1964 and yielded his first hit, Chuck Berry’s ‘Memphis’, which reached US number 2. Further hits during 1964-65 included Berry’s ‘Maybellene’, Harold Dorman’s ‘Mountain Of Love’, the traditional folk song ‘Midnight Special’, Willie Dixon’s ‘Seventh Son’ and Pete Seeger’s ‘Where Have All The Flowers Gone’, each delivered in a rousing, loose interpretation that featured Rivers’ nasal vocal, his concise, soulful guitar-playing and sharp backing musicians. Relentlessly rhythmic, the tracks were produced by Lou Adler, working his way towards becoming one of the city’s most formidable hitmakers. Rivers started 1966 with ‘Secret Agent Man’, the theme song from a popular television spy thriller. Later that year he achieved his only number 1 record with his own ‘Poor Side Of Town’ (co-written with Adler), an uncharacteristic ballad using top studio musicians such as Hal Blaine, James

Burton and Larry Knechtal. Rivers also launched his own Soul City record label in 1966, signing the popular 5th Dimension, who went on to have four Top 10 singles on the label. Retreating from the party atmosphere of his earlier recordings for Imperial, Rivers had hits in 1967 with two Motown Records cover versions, the Four Tops’ ‘Baby I Need Your Lovin’’ and Smokey Robinson’s ‘The Tracks Of My Tears’. Following an appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival, another soulful ballad, the James Hendricks-penned ‘Summer Rain’, became Rivers’ last major hit of the 60s. The latter also appeared on Rivers’ bestselling psych pop collection, Realization. Early 70s albums such as Slim Slo Slider, Home Grown and L.A. Reggae were

critically lauded but not commercially successful, although the latter gave Rivers a Top 10 single with Huey ‘Piano’ Smith’s ‘Rockin’ Pneumonia And The Boogie Woogie Flu’. A version of the Beach Boys’ ‘Help Me Rhonda’ (with backing vocal by Brian Wilson) was a minor success in 1975, and two years later Rivers landed his final Top 10 single, ‘Swayin’ To The Music (Slow Dancin’)’. Rivers recorded a handful of albums in the 80s, including a live one featuring the old hits. He relaunched his Soul City label in the late 90s for the release of Last Train To Memphis, an excellent new studio album. Further recordings for Soul City followed in the early 00s.

Spend A Paranormal Evening With Alice Cooper at White Oak Music Hall This month, the Godfather of “Shock Rock,” Alice Cooper, returns to Houston for one night only, Sunday, October 14th for a show on the lawn at White Oak Music Hall. For this performance, Alice is reported to be bringing an extraordinary show to White Oak Music Hall that is a mirror reflection of his latest release, the live concert album, A Paranormal Evening At The Olympia Paris. A Paranormal Evening At The Olympia Paris is a live journey through Alice Cooper’s timeless past, featuring classic hits like “Poison,” “School’s Out,” and “No More Mr. Nice Guy”. The album is also laced with hand-picked songs for true Cooper fans like “Pain,” “Woman of Mass Destruction,” and “Paranoiac Personality,” from his latest studio album, Paranormal. The live album was released on August 31 via earMUSIC as 2CD digipak, 2LP Gatefold (white and red LP), and digitally. Also included on the album is his classic timeless journey into insanity, “Ballad of Dwight Fry.” Alice Cooper pioneered a grandly theatrical brand of hard rock that was designed to shock. Drawing equally from horror movies, vaudeville, and garage rock, the group created a stage show that featured electric chairs, guillotines, fake blood and boa constrictors. He continues to tour regularly, performing shows worldwide with the dark and horror-themed theatrics that he’s best known for. With a schedule that includes six months each year on the road, Alice Cooper brings his own brand of rock psychodrama to fans both old and new, enjoying it as much as the audience does. Known as the architect of shock-rock, Cooper (in both the original Alice Cooper band and as a solo artist) has rattled the cages and undermined the authority of generations of guardians of the status quo, continuing to surprise fans and exude danger at every turn, like a great horror movie, even in an era where CNN can present real life shocking images. Cooper was born in Detroit Michigan, and moved to Phoenix with his family. The Alice Cooper band formed while they were all in high school in Phoenix, and was discovered in 1969 by Frank Zappa in Los Angeles, where he signed them to his record label. Their collaboration with young record producer Bob Ezrin led to the break-through third album “Love It to Death” which hit the charts in 1971, followed by “Killer,” “School’s Out,” ”Billion Dollar Babies,” and “Muscle of Love.” Each new album release was accompanied by a bigger and more elaborate touring stage show. 1974 saw the release of a “Greatest Hits” album, and then Cooper, in 1975, released his first solo album, “Welcome to My Nightmare” in 1975, accompanied by the legendary groundbreaking theatrical Welcome to My Nightmare concert tour. Associated with that album and tour was the ground-breaking network TV special Alice Cooper: The Nightmare. Other film and television appearances include The Muppet Show, Mae West’s last film Sextette, Roadie, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearst Club Band and appearances on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson and Tom Snyder’s Tomorrow Show. The original band also Page 6 - Music News October 2018

made an appearance in the movie Diary of a Mad Housewife in 1979, filmed the fulllength feature film Good To See You Again Alice Cooper, and Alice appeared in a 1972 episode of The Snoop Sisters. Alice’s solo career skyrocketed in the late 1970’s, with a succession of hit singles, including “You & Me,” and classic albums, including “Lace And Whiskey” and “From The Inside,” and bigger and even more elaborate concert tours. In the ‘80’s Cooper explored different sounds, highlighted by the new wavish album “Flush The Fashion,” the heavy metal “Constrictor” and “Raise Your Fist And Yell,” and then 1989’s melodic hard rock album “Trash,” which featured the massive hit single “Poison” and became his biggest selling album and single worldwide. During this period Alice also appeared in the horror films Monster Dog and John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness, and recorded songs for the soundtracks to Roadie, Class of 1984, Friday the 13 Part VI: Jason Lives and Wes Craven’s Shocker. Cooper’s most memorable movie appearance was as himself in Wayne’s World in 1991. He also played (fittingly) Freddy Krueger’s wicked step-father in Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, and appeared on Gene Wilder’s TV series Something Wilder as well as on That ‘70’s Show. The 90’s also saw the release of the albums “Hey Stoopid,” “The Last Temptation,” and “Fistful of Alice,” a live album. 1999 saw the release of the definitive historical 4 CD box set “The Life & Crimes of Alice Cooper,” from Rhino/Warners. In the new millennium, Cooper has been very productive and busy, writing, recording and releasing the albums “Brutal Planet,” “Dragon Town,” “The Eyes of Alice Cooper,” “Dirty Diamonds,” “Along Came a Spider,” and 2011’s “Welcome 2 My Nightmare,” plus “Old School 1964-1974,” a box set celebrating the original band. He also wrote and published a memoir, “Golf Monster,” in 2007, which tracked his life from childhood to rock stardom, and his journey from alcoholic to golf addict, and was featured in the Tim Burton film “Dark Shadows” in 2012. Alice, along with original Alice Cooper band members, Dennis Dunaway, Neal Smith, Michael Bruce, and Glen Buxton (posthumously) were inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in March, 2011. With his influence on rock & roll long since acknowledged, there is little that Alice Cooper hasn’t achieved in his remarkable career, including platinum albums, sold-out tours and any number of honors and career achievement awards. As he heads back out on the concert trail each year, Cooper insists he’s still motivated to continue touring and recording albums, as well as making time for such side projects as Cooper’stown (his Phoenixbased restaurant/ sports bar) and his Nights With Alice Cooper nightly radio show, syndicated domestically and worldwide on over 100 stations.

The Joshua Project Performs at Acadia Live Tonight was certainly something different for us. We attended the Joshua Project at Acadia Live aka Acadia Bar & Grill. This was very different from what we normally see when we go out to see bands. It was more of a theatrical presentation, and it was very good. At times it looked a bit like creatures from the Twilight Zone had taken over the stage, and at others it looked like the coming of WWIII. Our hats go off to Joshua Lowry, founder of the Joshua Project for his ingenuity with such a concept, but it really works. It was one of the best and most interesting shows we saw this month. Joshua tells us that this is his last show for this year as he goes into creative mode and puts together something different for next year, so we’re looking forward to checking that out. In the meantime tune into HMNTV - Houston Music News Television for something completely different - The Joshua Project at Acadia Live.

The Hollywood Spotlight

tion before?). Bandofheathens.com

By Hollywood Steve Rangel

The Band Of Heathens “A Message From The People Revisited” Ray Charles’ classic album “A Message From The People” was as uplifting and thought-provoking as it was timely. Released upon a troubled nation in 1972, it served as the voice of the common man. And unlike so many of today’s socially themed efforts, the message was a positive one. It represented a cry for freedom, a call for peace, and a reminder of just how great our country could be. Flash forward to 2018. The Band Of

Heathens, during another time of stark division in our nation, decide to take on the Herculean task of reimagining this masterpiece for a new generation. Though unquestionably an uber-talented bunch, BOH (Ed Jurdi/guitar and vocals, Gordy Quist/guitar and vocals, Trevor Nealon/all keyboards and vocals, Richard Millsap/drums and vocals, Jesse Wilson/bass and vocals) was taking a genuine risk here. They’re treading sacred ground with this project, a fact they seem well aware of. But this story has a happy ending. “A Message From The People Revisited” is an excellent piece of work, an inspired interpretation of Ray Charles’ original statement. BOH wisely makes no attempt to mimic Charles. This is undoubtedly a Band Of Heathens album. This is their version of these songs, with their trademark harmonies and Texas soul. The end result is fresh take that is also a fitting homage to the source material. As always, the band’s production is top-notch. Recorded at The Finishing School in Austin TX and helmed by Steve Christensen and Fred Kevorkian, “A Message From The People Revisited” is as uplifting and thought-provoking as it is timely (hey, where have I heard that descrip-

Armadillo Road “Honky Tonk Road” If you’re in the mood for a shot of good ol’ fashioned Texas country, may I suggest the latest release from Armadillo Road? “Honky Tonk Way”, the new eleven song offering from this talented five-piece ensemble, is refreshing in its simplicity. It’s a modern approach, to be sure. But it has all the vibe and appeal of classic country. It makes no attempt to break any new ground, and that’s what makes it so effective. It doesn’t try to be anything it isn’t. It’s just a toe tappin’, belly rubbing, boot scootin’ good time. Armadillo Road is Tee Jay Hill (bass, vocals), Jeremy Edens (rhythm guitar, vocals), Josh Jarratt (lead guitar, backing vocals), Michael Small (steel guitar), and Jessie Esquivel (drums, backing vocals). They sing about whiskey, women, fun times, and broken hearts. They

can kick it out (“Baby Wants To Boogie”, “There’s No One”, “Sweet Country Woman”), slow it down (“Never Been Loved”, “Broken Hearts”), and put a tear in your beer (“Chains”). They can two step, they can line dance, and they can flat-out rock. All of which is to say, “Honky Tonk Way” is a well balanced effort. And there’s certainly more than one radio-ready track here, so I expect it will be a successful one as well. This impressive outing was recorded at Wonderland Studios, with Eric McKinney assisting the band with the production chores. The full, lush is consistent throughout and perfectly suited to the material. Country music is not always intended to make you think. But the goal should always be to make to feel. And by that standard, “Honky Tony Way” is a home run for Armadillo Road. Armadilloroad.com

Mojo Performs at The Last Concert Cafe Tonight we’ve landed at The Last Concert Cafe to see the Funky Jam Band Mojo. These guys really put on an impressive show utilizing their funky rhythms infused with Rock and R&B. In a ways, they’re somewhat reminiscent to bands like the Grateful Dead, you never know where their songs will lead too, but you’re going to have a great time on the journey. Tonight’s show at The Last Concert Cafe was certainly a lot of fun. At some times they appeared to be in an experimental mode with their music, but it all came back to the groove. It’s a bit hard to describe all the changes and directions they go to in they’re music, so you’re just going to have to watch the videos that we have posted from this show on HMNTV Houston Music Television at http://www.houstonmusicnews.net. Take a watch and let us know what you think they’re doing and how you feel about it.

The Bad Samaritans Perform at Dan Electro’s At Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar tonight it was The Bad Samaritans on stage. The Bad Samaritans perform a little bit of everything, but they’re roots seem to be anchored in the Classic Rock/Psychedelic genre of music. Tonight’s show featured a wide variety of material, including songs from Paul Revere & The Raiders, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and more. I got to admit, I had a really good time here tonight and really didn’t want to leave to go to my next gig. These guys really made a good impression on me and I really recommend them to the Classic Rock / Psychedelia fan out there. They’re just “too much fun.” Bad Samaritans are Joe Holmesly - Guitar and Vocals, John Glenn - Drum, Keyboards and Vocals, and John Ramos- Bass. Next time you see that they are performing around Houston, be sure to go. in the meantime, check out the two videos we have from their Dan Electro’s Show on HMNTV Houston Music News Television. TRY OUT OUR AWARD WINNING MARGARITAS AND GREAT MEXICAN FOOD! Mod Sun Performs at Houston Underground Tonight at Houston Underground, Mod Sun kicked off his Smile Machine Tour to a packed house of enthusiastic fans. Mod Sun held the audience in the palm of his hands for the whole time, generating a lot of energy for the crowd to get hold of. Their hands were in the air, they bounced up and down, and they just grooved all night to the tunes this rapper had to give them. They really were getting into his music to the max. Derek Smith (born March 10, 1987), known professionally as Mod Sun (stylized as MOD SUN, an acronym standing for “Movement on Dreams, Stand under None”), is an American rapper, author, rock musician and poet from Bloomington, Minnesota. Mod Sun has released five mixtapes and three EPs throughout his solo career. His style of music has been described as “hippy hop.” Mod Sun’s debut album, Look Up, was released on March 10, 2015, through Rostrum Records. It peaked at #1 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. On March 10, 2017, his second studio album, Movie, was released, also through Rostrum Records. It peaked at #16 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. Tonight he performed songs from all his albums and really put on a fine show. As we said before, the energy for this show was so thick that you could cut it with a knife. But don’t take our word for it, check out the videos from this performance on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television and you’ll see just what we’re talking about. Hadden Sayers Performs at Rockefellers Tonight we got a real treat... It was Hadden Sayers at Rockefellers. Hadden has always been on of our favorite guitarists / songwriters/ performers, ever since we saw him perform with Miss Molly and The Whips years ago. In fact, we saw them in this very same venue many years ago. Tonight’s show was definitely inspiring and filled with some of the best Blues you’ve ever heard. Hadden was incendiary on guitar and his troubadour style of presenting his songs was a lot of fun too. With just about every song he performed, he had a story to go along with it. Tonight Hadden performed a lot of old favorites, along with songs from his new album, “Dopamine Machine,” which was just released this September. The songs he performed off of that were just plain genius. If you’re into the Blues, and you can get a chance to see Hadden perform, please make sure you do. You’ll just love the experience and the music. We did. Great Job Hadden, we had a blast tonight. And now for you’re visual and listening pleasure, we have a couple of videos to share with you from tonight’s performance. Be sure to check them out online at HMNTV - Houston Music News Television at http://www.houstonmusicnews.net. Watch him perform the “Insomnia Blues” and more.

Sparky Parker Performs at The Big Easy It was time for a little ‘Blues’ tonight, so we headed over to one of our ‘favorite’ ‘Blues Club’s for some great entertainment from Sparky Parker and The Sparky Parker Band. We knew it was going to be a good show, and as usual, we were right. Sparky was hot tonight and the great ‘blues licks’ came right at us all night long. Sparky and his trusted Gibson Firebird really know how to make the Blues come alive and tonight was just a lot of fun. All night long the dance floor was filled and the folks there were just having the time of their lives dancing to this fine Blues act. If you haven’t seen Sparky yet, then you’re missing out and you need to put it on your “to do” list right now. Let me tell you, Sparky is one helluva guitarist. When he’s not performing with his own band, The Sparky Parker band, you can find him playing lead guitar in Funky Mustard and with Diunna Greenleaf & Blue Mercy. No matter what outfit you see him with, he’s one impressive musician. If you didn’t make it out to the show, we’ve got a couple of moments from that night we captured for HMNTV - Houston Music News Television at http:// www.houstonmusicnews.net. Check ‘em out right now!!

This great trio has been rocking the Houston area since 2011 and doing a fine job at it. We caught up with them this night at The Jailhouse Saloon, and they were really tearing up the stage. The band was in fine form tonight and really kicking out the jams with some great Blues as well as some fine Rock. Guitarist Trey Dryden really does a great job and performs some of the tastiest licks you’ve ever heard. That coupled with one of the finest rhythm sections around comprised of drummer Tim Hutto and bassist James Breaux makes them one of the best 3-piece bands you’ve ever heard. Jay Hooks Performs at Katie’s In Bacliff

Jay Hooks (left) is back performing in Houston again. We caught up with him at Katie’s in Bacliff, and he was definitely in fine form. Jay sounded better than ever as he just shredded over the frets of his guitar hitting some of the coolest ‘blues’ licks you’ve ever heard. Accompanying him on bass was Katie’s owner, Bob Emmons, along with Joe Campise on drums. Joe tells us that Jay gave them a real workout this night. If you haven’t seen Jay in a while, then keep your eyes peeled for the next time he’s at Katie’s. It’s certainly great to see him on stage again. Jay and the guys performed some great songs like “Parchment Farm,” “Cold Shot,” “Rock Me Baby,” and Stevie Ray Vaughan’s “Pride and Joy,” continued on next page among many other great tunes.

Salty Dog Performs at The Back Porch Tonight we’re in La Marque at The Back Porch to see Salty Dog. Salty Dog is a Classic Rock band based out of Texas City, and they’re really popular in the Galveston, County area. Tonight they were definitely sounding good. We got there right after the party started winding down, but there were still a fair amount of folks there dancing to their cool Classic Rock sounds. From Chuck Berry to Stevie Ray Vaughan, these guys were just cranking out all the hits. It really made for a great evening and a finish to our night of checking out clubs this saturday night. For those of you who live in Galveston, County or just find themselves down in this area of the woods, be sure to check out The Back Porch. You bikers are going to be happy to find out that they are extremely ‘bike friendly,’ In fact, if it’s a nice day or night out there, you probably should just ride your scooter down there and check out this cool nightspot. Tonight they really rocked. Tonight’s set was filled with the sounds of The Fixx, Huey Lewis, Elvis Costello, The Hipwaders and a whole lot of music from The Cars. Perhaps it could have been Flying Circus are return- because one of Houston’s finest drummers, John Hill, from the Cars ing to Houston. Here’s tribute band, The Karz was sitting in with the band. I had The chance to go By Jay Lambs Remy Be Cool! Stay In School!

It is that time of the year when school starts. Raav Records & COTD Records recording Artist Alex Knight, brings us the perfect anthem for this time of year with his Badass, in your face, power blues song, SKOOL DAZE, which is a parody about going to school. Personally, I LOVE THIS SONG, FROM THE OPENING LICK THAT CLEARLY DEMONSTRATES HIS POWER AND ABILITIES ON GUITAR, TO THE STORY LINE WHICH IS ARGUABLY QUITE UNIVERSAL, TO THE BEAT WHICH GRIPS THE SPIRIT. THIS GREAT SONG CAN BE FOUND AT REVERBNATION.COM just search for, ALEX KNIGHT! Haunting Houston With Hindsight The riff and percussion driven hard rock band “Hind§ight” formed in Sugar Land, Texas at around the turn of the millennium with a group of young musicians desiring to make music that would both rock hard but melodically inspire the minds of an audience. Stylistically, Hindsight’s music combines 90’s alternative rock with

modern heavy metal and metalcore. Band Members include, Brad Lambert (Guitars, Vocals), Andrew Jastram (Guitars), Lincoln LaCour (Drums), Jesse James (Bass) Voted Cotd records tip of the top hat of honor winner the band has earn the respect of thousands and here’s why. Hindsight has shared the stage with: Flyleaf, Fuel, Tantric, Fair to Midland, Days of The New, Kill Devil Hill, Parabelle, Rusty Cooley, Local H, Straight Line Stitch, HED PE, Smile Empty Soul, Sunflower Dead, Almost Kings, Framing Hanley, Starset, Saving Abel, Drowning Pool, Devil You Know, Gemini Syndrome, Orgy, P.O.D., War of Ages, Super Bob, Art of Dying, Letters From The Fire, Children 18:3, Everclear, Saliva, Mushroomhead, Stabbing Westward, Crobot, and Sevendust. Hindsight is playing at Screamfest Friday October 12 at 1500 Elton St, Houston, TX 77034;event goes from 8pm to 12. Screamfest features 8 haunted attractions that will make you Scream!!!! For more information on haunts in Houston this year go to houstonhauntedhouses.com Check out hindsight’s link at hindsightrock.com This Month Icons At Badassery would like to honor Stephen Rodriguez! Straight out of Houston, Texas, comes this months icon, Stephen Rodriguez, the lead singer of Houston’s #1 up and coming premier cover band called KIDD SIX. Which is now part of the Circus of The Dark records family! Stephen brings the sort of energy most people can only dream about. With stellar vocals singing such songs as Hell’s Bells, 18 And Life and The Kill, Stephen can hit notes we only dream about! I can’t even begin to explain just how amazing his performances are! As well as being a badass guitarist, he has a way of captivating the female attention! Stephen formed KIDD SIX a little over a year ago and they have taken over the Houston cover band scene with a vengeance. The party never stops! KIDD SIX plays all over Houston and has booked at many top premier venues such as Scout Bar, Sam’s

Boat, Einstein’s, Barge 295 and Pub Level among many others. Stephen is also the guitarist and singer along with Bailey Biersack for Carpet Burns, an original/cover acoustic duo. Talk about a musician who is truly impressive; his vocal power and endurance allow him to sing 3 hours of music that most vocalists can’t even attempt. I (BRB) sat down and spoke with him earlier and he lists his main influences being Mötley Crüe, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Queensryche. Stephen is big into 80s metal because of the higher degree of vocal difficulty. However he also enjoys 90s grunge because of the music. Bands out of the 90s he loves are bands such as The Toadies, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and Nirvana. Stephen actually learned a lot of guitar from hearing Nirvana’s songs. He credits Kurt Cobain as being his first guitar instructor. He also loves 2000s bands like Staind, Puddle Of Mudd, Mudvayne, Stone Sour, and Hoobastank just to name a few. Definitely one of his all time favorites would have to be Ministry. He loves those 3 decades of rock, as that is what his band KIDD SIX does for their shows. He admires the vocals he gets to use from the 80s, the 90s for the raw sound, and the 2000s for the well made songs that aren’t so cliché. From witnessing Stephen perform week after week and also having the pleasure of being in his other band, Carpet Burns, I can say without a doubt that Stephen blows even the most famous singers like Sebastian Bach, Vince Neil & Axl Rose out of the water! Be sure to come out on October 27 to Hugh & Jeff’s Bar and join us for Stephens big birthday bash and Halloween party! This icon is well deserving of all the praise he gets and if you haven’t witnessed Stephen in his glory yet, you are missing out greatly! It is with great honor to entitle Stephen Rodriguez an Icon At Badassery! Thank you for all your hard work! Check out His links on Facebook and on Reverbnation. UMC/Island/Interscope Reissues U2’s The Best Of 1990 - 2000 On Double Vinyl We have good news again this month for U2 fans out there in the music world. The Best of 1990-2000 from U2 has bee remastered and released again. This album has been out of print for a while now and Island Records, Interscope and UMC have joined together to re-release it. Right now the album is being released only on vinyl. It has bee completely remastered and pressed on two 180g double LP black vinyl. This is a limited release, so I suggest that if you are into U2, you will need to go out and get it as quick as you can. We expect it to disappear off the shelves in no time. The album was originally released in November of 2002 and was the second compilation album by U2. Last month we told you about the first U2 compilation release, The Best of 1980-1990. The original album was released on 1 disc containing 16 songs. It featured 4 song from the album Achtung Baby, 2 songs from the album All That You Can’t Leave Behind, 3 songs from Pop, 3 songs from Zooropa, as well as a couple of soundtrack songs from Original Soundtracks 1 and Batman Forever. In addition to those there were also two newly recorded releases at the time, “Electrical Storm” (mixed by William Orbit) and “The Hands That Built America,” which was recorded for the soundtrack to Martin Scorsese’s Gangs Of New York. The album reached #1 in 13 countries and was also the 12th best selling album of 2002. When our copy showed up in the mail the other day, we were definitely poised and

ready to hear it. We had been expecting it for a while and the anticipation was literally killing us. That’s another problem being a U2 fan. It’s never quick enough. The crystal clear clarity of the songs with the warmth of the vinyl quickly blew us away. It was definitely a far cry from the CDs we had been used to listening to. There’s just something about listening to vinyl albums that really warms up the senses…. Listening wise that is. It sounds basically the same as what we were used to, but there were some subtle differences. For one, there were some new mixes on the album. Three of the songs had undergone new mixes by British producer / engineer Mike Hedges. For the most part, Mike stayed pretty true to the original mixes, but did add a couple of his own touches to the mix. But believe me, he definitely knew what he was doing. Mike is the only British producer that has been nominated for Grammy awards four years in a row. He’s also worked with U2 in the past, so he knows what they expect out of one of his mixes. I also can’t stress enough about the album being pressed on to a double LP of 180g vinyl. This definitely adds to the life of the album. It will also help to keep warpage down over the years, not to mention cut down the vibration from your turntable. However, the key to this is the original source that the album was pressed from. Being that this is an extremely limited release, it also means that

the quality of the recording will be the same for all the albums. No over pressing on these masters.

view copy. More over, we’d like to thank U2 for recording some of the most memorable music we’ve ever heard. Now, don’t waste any time. These are just hitting the shelves this month and may not last long. Get yours before it’s too late. The track listing for The Best of 1990-2000 is: Side 1 1. Even Better Than The Real Thing 2. Mysterious Ways 3. Beautiful Day 4. Electrical Storm (William Orbit Mix) Side 2 1. One 2. Miss Sarajevo 3. Stay (Faraway, So Close!) 4. Stuck In A Moment You Can’t Get Out Of Side 3 1. Gone (Mike Hedges Mix) 2. Until The End Of The World 3. The Hands That Built America (Theme From ‘Gangs Of New York’) 4. Discothèque (Mike Hedges Mix)

At any rate, this new release will be a welcome addition to any U2 fans library or collection. Kudos goes out to Scott Sedillo at Bernie Grundman Mastering for the Remastering Engineering on these songs, as well as Arnie Acosta at The Mastering Lab and Declan Gaffney for the Audio Master Transfer. Digital Editing was handled by Pat Sullivan at Bernie Grundman. It was a splendid job by all of these audio experts. And of course, thanks to the folks at Umusic for sending us the re-
