Yngwie Malmsteen Performs at Warehouse Live Virtuosic Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen will be performing this month at Warehouse Live on Friday, April 26th. Yngwie is touring in support of his new blues-based album, Blue Lightning. Yngwie is credited for originating the fleetfingered neo-classical style that took the heavy metal world by storm in the early 1980s. Combining a dazzling technique honed over years of obsessive practice, and with a love for rock gods such as Jimi Hendrix and Ritchie Blackmore and composers like Bach, Beethoven, and Paganini, Malmsteen’s distinctively Baroque, gothic compositional style and lightning-fast arpeggiated solos rewrote the book on heavy metal guitar. His debut album, 1984’s Rising Force, upped the ante for aspiring hard rock guitarists and proved the major catalyst for the ’80s guitar phenomenon known as “shredding.” Malmsteen blazed a fiery path through the ’80s and early ’90s, though like many artists in the metal realm, he was forced to lie low during the grunge and alternative rock boom. Following a series of personal setbacks, tragedies, and injuries, Malmsteen eventually resurfaced and then recorded at a prolific, rapid pace, continuing to play the music he loved in his patented neo-classical style well into the next century, with highlights arriving via 2002’s Attack!!, 2008’s Perpetual Flame, and 2019’s Blue Lightning. Yngwie (pronounced “ING-vay”) was born Lars Johann Yngwie Lannerback in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1963, later adopting his mother’s maiden name following his parents’ divorce. His mother tried without initial success to interest him in music as an outlet, however, when seven-year-old Yngwie saw a television special on the death of Jimi Hendrix featuring live performance footage of Hendrix setting his guitar on fire, he became obsessed with the guitar, learning to play the music of both Hendrix and favorites Deep Purple. Through Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore’s use of diatonic minor scales over simple blues riffs, Malmsteen was led toward classical music, and his sister exposed him to composers like Bach, Beethoven, Vivaldi, and Mozart. He spent hours practicing obsessively until his fingers bled, and by age ten, his mother allowed him to stay home from school to develop his musical talents. Also at age ten, Malmsteen became enamored of the music of 19th century violinist/composer Niccolo Paganini, as well as Paganini’s flamboyant style and wildman image; this would provide the blueprint for Malmsteen’s synthesis of classical music and rock. By the time he was 18, Malmsteen was playing around Sweden with various bands attempting to find an audience for his technically staggering instrumental explorations, but most listeners preferred more accessible pop music; frustrated, Malmsteen sent demo tapes to record companies overseas. When Mike Varney, president of Shrapnel Records — a label synonymous with the term “shredder” — heard Malmsteen’s tape, he invited the guitarist to come to the United States and join the band Steeler in 1981. Steeler recorded one album with Malmsteen on guitar, but dissatisfied with the band’s slick, commercial sound, Malmsteen moved on to the group Alcatrazz, whose Deep Purple and Rainbow influences better suited the guitarist’s style. Still not quite satisfied,
Malmsteen formed his own band, Rising Force, with longtime friend and keyboardist Jens Johansson. The new band’s first album, also called Rising Force, was released in 1984; it was a largely instrumental affair spotlighting Malmsteen’s incendiary guitar work and Johansson’s nearly equally developed technique. The album was an immediate sensation in guitar circles winning countless reader’s polls in guitar magazines and reaching number 60 on Billboard’s album chart (no mean feat for an instrumental album), and he received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Malmsteen’s subsequent albums, Marching Out and Trilogy, also sold quite well and consolidated his reputation and influence as a composer as well as a soloist. However, on June 22, 1987, a speeding Malmsteen crashed his Jaguar into a tree; in breaking the steering wheel with his head, he received a blood clot in his brain that nearly killed him and extensively damaged the nerves leading to his picking hand. Undaunted, Malmsteen regained the use of his hand and recorded Odyssey, his most accessible, radio-friendly collection to date; the single “Heaven Tonight” widened his audience beyond a devoted core of guitar fans and helped push the album into Billboard’s Top 40. Following a world tour including the thenSoviet Union, the Rising Force unit disbanded and Malmsteen formed a new band in his native Sweden for 1990’s Eclipse. The album was a success in Europe and Japan. Malmsteen left PolyGram and released his next album, 1992’s Fire and Ice. Fire and Ice debuted at number one on the Japanese charts. However, disaster struck frequently over the next two years. Hurricane Andrew destroyed Malmsteen’s Miami property; his manager of four years died of a heart attack; Elektra dropped him from their roster; a freak accident left the guitarist with a broken hand, in addition to frequent bouts of tendinitis caused by his lightning technique. Malmsteen secured a deal with the Japanese label Pony Canyon after his hand had healed completely in 1993. He returned to recording with a vengeance, releasing The Seventh Sign in 1994, as well as two mini-albums (Power and Glory and I Can’t Wait), and then Magnum Opus in 1995 and the all-covers album Inspiration in 1996. Malmsteen returned to the headlines in 2002, after a fellow airline passenger threw water on him after he allegedly made a slanderous comment about homosexuals. This incensed Malmsteen, who had to be escorted away by security, all the while screaming to the passenger that she had “unleashed the f*cking fury.” This stint proved to be so popular in revitalizing his career that his comeback album in 2005 — Unleash the Fury — appropriated the phrases as its title. 2008’s Perpetual Flame saw Malmsteen team up with Iced Earth and Judas Priest vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens, but he returned to instrumental work on 2009’s Angels of Love. Relentless arrived the following year — once again featuring Owens behind the mike — and was promoted via a blazing performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Malmsteen handled all of the instruments and vocals on 2012’s Spellbound, and in 2016 he issued his 20th studio long-player, World on Fire. In 2019, Malmsteen released his first blues LP, Blue Lightning.

Bob Seger Brings His ‘Runaway Train’ Farewell Tour To The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion After a career that has spanned more than 50 years, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band will hit the road for one last time on their final tour. His final show in Houston will be May 2nd at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. This is reported to be Bob’s Big Farewell Tour as he ends his touring career on a big note with a big tour. The tour had been previously scheduled for last year, but he had to take time out when he underwent back surgery. Unfortunately he had to cancel his ‘Runaway Train’ tour before it ever hit the tracks. Now he is feeling well enough to board the train to retirement with one last musical fling. Seger joins a growing list of classic rock stars that have announced farewell tours, including Paul Simon, Elton John, Ozzy Osbourne, Joan Baez, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Peter Frampton. Seger released his “I Knew You When’ album on November 17, his first studio release since 2014. He suspended his Runaway Train tour on Oct. 3, 2017, upon receiving his doctor’s orders to attend to an urgent medical issue concerning his vertebrae. On Nov. 22, 2017, Seger revealed to his hometown Detroit Free Press about the procedure. As the paper’s Bob McCollum noted, Seger felt a “numb tingle” creep into his hands three weeks into the tour, which began Aug. 24, 2017. “Whoa, this is weird,” he quoted the musician. t turns out Seger had a ruptured disc in his neck, leading to “intense spinal surgery. I’ve been singing real hard for 52 years. That’s a strain on the upper shoulders and neck. And I guess I finally just popped one out.” Seger did not provide a specific reason for his decision to cease touring. However, as Rolling Stone points out, the 73-yearold Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has mentioned retirement as far back as 2011, saying at the time: “I can’t do this much longer. My manager is 70. We’ve been together for 45 years now and we need to stop pretty soon and turn it over to the Kid Rocks and Eminems. I guess we’re in the final stages here. When I got offstage the other night I said to my security guy, ‘That was surreal. I can’t believe I just did a full-on rock show.’ It’s just surreal.” Last year, Seger was forced to postpone several tour dates in order to have back surgery to repair a ruptured disc. Seger began playing music in 1961 as the leader of the Detroit-based trio the Decibels; his future manager, Eddie “Punch” Andrews was also a member of the band. Moving to Ann Arbor, he played with the Town Criers before he became the keyboardist and vocalist for Doug Brown & the Omens. Billing themselves as the Beach Bums, the band released “The Ballad of the Yellow Beret,” a parody of the Sgt. Barry Sadler song “The Ballad of the Green Beret.” The single was withdrawn shortly after its release after Sadler threatened a lawsuit. In 1966, Seger released his first solo single, “East Side Story,” which became a regional hit. Several other local hit singles followed on Cameo Records, including “Persecution Smith” and “Heavy Music,” before his label folded. In 1968, he formed the Bob Seger System and signed with Capitol Records, releasing his debut album, Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man, in the spring of that year. The title track became a national hit, climbing to number 17, but the group’s follow-up, Noah, stiffed and Seger decided to quit the music business in 1969 to attend college. One year later, Seger had returned to rock & roll with a new backing band, releasing Mongrel at the end of 1970. For 1971’s Brand New Morning, he disbanded his group

and recorded a singer/songwriter effort. Following its release, he began performing with the duo Dave Teegarden and Skip “Van Winkle” Knape, and they provided support on 1972’s Smokin’ O.P.’s, which was the first release on Palladium Records, a label he formed with Andrews. The album failed to sell, as did Back in ’72 (1973) and Seven (1974), and he moved back to Capitol Records for 1975’s Beautiful Loser. For the recording of Beautiful Loser, Seger formed
The groundswell behind Live Bullet sent Seger’s next studio album, Night Moves (1976), into the Top Ten early in 1977. Night Moves became a blockbuster, generating the hit singles “Night Moves,” “Mainstreet,” and “Rock & Roll Never Forgets.” Stranger in Town, released in the summer of 1978, was just as successful, featuring the hits “Still the Same,” “Hollywood Nights,” “We’ve Got Tonite,” and “Old Time Rock & Roll.” Stranger in Town confirmed his status as one
the Silver Bullet Band, which consisted of guitarist Drew Abbott, bassist Chris Campbell, keyboardist Robyn Robbins, saxophonist Alto Reed, and drummer Charlie Allen Martin. Seger supported Beautiful Loser with an extensive tour with the Silver Bullet Band, and while it didn’t make the album a hit, it provided a widespread grassroots following across the country. The touring paid off in 1976, when Live Bullet, a double album recorded in Detroit, became a hit, spending over three years on the U.S. charts and going gold; the album would eventually go quadruple platinum.
America’s most popular rockers. Seger’s next album, 1980’s Against the Wind, became his first number one album and all of its big hits — “Fire Lake,” “Against the Wind,” “You’ll Accomp’ny Me” — were ballads. The live album Nine Tonight continued his multiplatinum success in 1981, selling three million copies and peaking at number three. Seger returned with The Distance in 1982. The Distance was the first album since Seven to be recorded with the addition of session musicians, which caused guitarist Abbott to quit the band in frustration. Over the course of the next decade, the member-
ship of the Silver Bullet Band shifted constantly. While The Distance featured “Shame on the Moon,” his biggest hit single to date, its sales plateaued at a million copies, suggesting that his popularity was beginning to level off. Seger also began to drastically reduce his recording and touring schedules — he only released one other album, 1986’s Like a Rock, during the ’80s. Like a Rock and its supporting tour were both successes, paving the way for “Shakedown,” a song taken from the 1987 soundtrack to Beverly Hills Cop II, which became Seger’s lone number one hit. Four years after its release, he returned with The Fire Inside. Although the album went platinum and reached the Top Ten, it only appealed to Seger’s devoted following, as did 1995’s It’s a Mystery, which became his first album since Live Bullet to fail to go platinum, leveling off at gold status. A long hiatus followed, where Seger kept his head down and spent time with his family. These quiet years were only interrupted by his 2004 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Finally, in 2006, after an 11-year hiatus, Seger released Face the Promise, his first record since 1975’s Beautiful Loser not to feature the Silver Bullet Band. Although it spawned no big hit singles — “Wait for Me” made it into the Billboard adult contemporary Top 20 — Face the Promise performed well, debuting at four on the Billboard charts on its way to a platinum certification. A couple archival projects followed: the 2009 compilation Early Seger, Vol. 1, which balanced previously released cuts with re-recorded old tunes, and the 2011 double-disc set Ultimate Hits: Rock & Roll Never Forgets, which was certified platinum and generated a modest adult contemporary hit cover of Tom Waits’ “Downtown Train.” A new album titled Ride Out appeared in October of 2014, debuting at number three on the Billboard charts. Seger next released I Knew You When, a 2017 album that was dedicated to the recently deceased Glenn Frey.

Chvrches Perform at White Oak Music Hall Scottish rock band, Chvrches will be performing at White Oak Music Hall on Friday, April 26th. Chvrches is touring in support of their most recent album, Love Is Dead, which was released just last year, and their Hansa Session EP, which was released last year as well. Crafting songs with big synths and bigger hooks, Chvrches combine their roots in Glasgow’s indie community — the band features former members of Aerogramme and the Twilight Sad — with a love of chartfriendly pop. They made an immediate impact on the music scene with 2013’s bittersweet-yet-anthemic debut album The Bones of What You Believe, and later found ways of bringing an extra sheen to their music without sacrificing any of its depth. On 2018’s Love Is Dead, their collaborators ranged from pop producer Greg Kurstin to the National’s Matt Berninger. In September 2011, keyboardist/vocalist Iain Cook, a former member of Aerogramme and a film and television music composer, and keyboardist/vocalist Martin Doherty, a touring member of the Twilight Sad, invited vocalist Lauren Mayberry, who previously played with the band Blue Sky Archives and holds a law degree as well as a Master’s degree in journalism, to sing on some demos. The sessions went so well that the trio christened itself Chvrches — spelling it with a “v” instead of a “u” to differentiate themselves in Internet searches — and began writing songs inspired by Prince, Depeche Mode, and Kate Bush. Two of these songs, “The Mother We Share” and “Lies,” earned online buzz, and in November 2012, the band released “The Mother We Share” as their debut single. Late that year, Chvrches were among the acts selected for the BBC’s Sound of 2013, ultimately finishing fifth. The trio began 2013 by playing a few North American dates, releasing the Recover EP and recording its debut album in Cook’s basement studio. That September, they released The Bones of What You Believe, which debuted at number nine on the U.K. albums chart and was later certified gold in the U.K.; it also entered the Top 20 on the charts in Canada, Australia, and the United States, among other countries. After covering Bauhaus’ “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” for the movie Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters, Chvrches began working on new material in January 2015 at their own Alucard Studios. Taking inspiration from Quincy Jones’ lean yet massivesounding production style, their second album, Every Open Eye, appeared in September 2015. The album’s singles included a version of “Bury It” that featured Paramore’s Hayley Williams. In 2016, the band collaborated with Solar Fields on “Warning Call,” which appeared in the video game Mirror’s Edge Catalyst. The following year, Chvrches contributed a cover of Tegan and Sara’s “Call It Off” to the tenthanniversary edition of the duo’s album The Con, and went into the studio with producers Greg Kurstin and Dave Stewart to work on their third album. Boasting a bigger, more straightforward sound than their previous releases, 2018’s Love Is Dead included the
singles “Get Out” and “My Enemy,” a collaboration with the National’s Matt Berninger. Following its release, the album topped Billboard’s Top Rock Albums and Alternative Albums charts. Late that year, Chvrches released the Hansa Session EP. Named after the Berlin studio in which it was recorded (and also hosted David Bowie and Nick Cave among other artists), it featured acoustic and string-driven arrangements of several of Love Is Dead songs.

(Hed) p.e. Perform at The Scout Bar on May 4 (Hed) p.e. will be performing this next month at The Scout Bar on May 4th. Since the show is so early in May, we thought we’d better give you a heads-up on it. The band always puts on a good show, so we figured you’d want to know about it real quick so you can get your tickets ahead of time. Originally based in Huntington Beach, CA, (Hed) p.e. (the “pe” stands for “Planet Earth”) was founded in 1994 by frontman Jahred Gomes, whose goal was to fuse the region’s long-standing punk rock heritage with G-funk-inflected hip-hop — a sound he labeled “G-punk.” He was shortly joined by bassist Mark who has remained alongside the band until present day. The line up is currently
rounded out by guitarist Jaxon and drummer Trauma. Three years and a self-financed 1995 EP entitled Church of Realities later, (hed) p.e. (also comprising lead guitarist Wesley “Wesstyle” Geer, rhythm guitarist Chad “Chizad” Benekos, bassist Mark “Mawk” Young, drummer Ben “B.C.” Vaught, and Doug “DJ Product @ 1969” Boyce on turntables and samples) released their eponymous debut through Jive Records, then hit the road with Ozzfest and bands like Korn, Static-X, and System of a Down. However, it wasn’t until the year 2000 when they released the album “broke” that they received mainstream success. It was this
album that solidified them as a mainstay in the rock and metal community. Blackout, arrived in 2003 which continues to be their most successful album to date. After the release of Blackout, (hed) p.e. switched labels from Jive to Koch and underwent something of an overhaul (welcoming new guitarist Jaxon Benge and drummer Mark “Moke” Bistany) prior to recording their fourth album, 2005’s Only in Amerika. The all-new Back 2 Base X and the Best of (hed) Planet Earth compilation arrived in 2006, followed by Flat Bill Hat in the summer of 2007 and the politically charged New World Orphans in 2009. A second compilation, titled Major Pain 2 Indee Freedom: The Best of Hed P.E., was released in 2010, featuring a new track and a limited-edition DVD of the group performing live in Los Angeles. That same year they dropped Truth Rising, which broke into the Billboard Top 100. Yet another compilation was released in 2013, just as DJ Product parted ways with the band. More departures came the next year as Benge and Young left, replaced by Greg “Gregzilla” Harrison and Kurt “Kid Bass” Blankenship, respectively. The group is infamous for changing the image and style of the band and music from release to release. Infusing moments of punk, metal, rap, reggae, and rock into their very eclectic yet precise sound. Many have asked what the name (Hed) p.e. means and stands for. According to vocalist Jahred, “The name (Hed) p.e. is a name I came up with which basically means our consciousness is connected to the planet and the planet is evolving, therefore, we as her children, evolve with her. The “p.e.” originally was defined as PLANETARY EVOLUTION, and sometimes morphs to PLANET EARTH and back, but both carry the same message, the (Hed) is the symbol for consciousness. WE ARE ON THE MOTHERSHIP!” Despite many bands and peers from their genre, (Hed)p.e. has never taken a break from releasing albums and touring, which has enabled them to survive and meet with very strong independent success over the years. As a member that has been with the band from inception, bassist Mark attributes this to a passion for music and for playing in (Hed)p.e. for over 2 decades. “I moved from NewCastle England to pursue music in the United States and have never looked back.” says Mark. “Our goal is to be a band that can connect with fans for decades to come, much like bands like the Rolling Stones have been able to do for over four generations of music.” Staying true to the (Hed)p.e. standard of change and growth both personally and musically, the album Evolution (previously titled Ascension) was issued in the summer of 2014. It took the band back to their metal and underground roots they grew up on as kids. With tracks like “One More Body” and “No Tomorrow” holding down the metal and aggressive front, to the Led Zeppelin infused track “2 Many Games”, this album delivers every style imaginable and even rounds the album out with three reggae inspired/infused album closers. In 2015, it was confirmed that 12-year guitarist Jaxon Benge and original bassist Mark Young had left the band. They were replaced by guitarist Greg “Gregzilla” Harrison and bassist Kurt “Kid Bass” Blankenship, leaving vocalist Jared Gomes as the group’s only remaining original member. Forever!, their ninth effort and first with only one founding member, arrived in 2016. In a time when so many bands are playing it safe and going through the motions, whether it be out of fear of failure or lack of new ideas, (Hed)p.e. embraces change and “Evolves” with their greatest work to date.

The Leslie Doak Band Performs at Loaded Barrels We’re at Loaded Barrels tonight and onstage is our old friend, Leslie Doak! Leslie started playing guitar at the age of 8. He performed in rock bands as a kid for a while and then discovered his Country roots, and it’s been Country now for a long time. That’s something we’re certainly glad about. Leslie does a great job recreating those great old Country Classics. In addition to Classics, Leslie also performs his own material. He released his first single, “Cowboy’s Dream” in 2017 amd has quite a few other originals as well. Leslie performed some great material from Radney Foster (“Texas In 1880”), Cross Canadian Ragweed (“Alabama”), The Mavericks (“What A Crying Shame”) and even George Strait (“Check Yes Or No”). Our buddy Kendall Mason called us up and wanted us to come and see the debut of his new lineup at The BFE Rock Club this evening, so we headed out there for the show. We’ve always enjoyed Kendall’s singing and his choice of backing musicians has always been impeccable, so we knew we were in for a treat, and right we are. From the moment the band started to perform, they held our attention. The camaraderie among the band was fantastic and they just blended together beautifully. Joining Kendall on stage was his long time guitarist, Bill Nelson. Bill has been performing with Kendall for years. The new members of the band are Jeff Spike Wong on bass. This guy just steals the show as he bounces all over the place performing some of the tastiest bass licks you’ve ever heard. Keep an eye out for this guy folks. On drums, keeping the backbeat flowing is Mark Moreno. Mark really knows how to keep this band together and on time. The combination of the four of them really made for an excellent show. And what can we say about Kendall’s new songs. They were extremely good. All in all, this was one of the best performances from Kendall we’ve ever seen. He just gets better and better. His vocals were spot on. Anyway, we’ve got a couple of videos from the show to share with you, so if you tune into HMNTV - Houston Music News Television, you can check them out right now, so sit back and start watching now at http://www.houstonmusicnews.net rock and metal music. Erykah Badu Performs at The Arena Theatre
R’n’B/neo-soul artist Erykah Badu will be performing this month at The Arena Theatre on April 27th. Erykah Badu (born Erica Abi Wright on February 26, 1971 in Dallas, Texas) is an American R’n’B/neo-soul artist whose work crosses over into jazz. She is best known for her singles You Got Me her collaboration with The Roots, as well as her own songs Tyrone, Love of My Life, On & On, Bag Lady, The Healer, Honey and Soldier. Her lyrics are highly personal urban philosophy which throw emotional challenges in the face of the listener. She weaves unusual musical influences together creating a rich texture of sound. Some music journalists have labeled her Nu soul, nouvelle-soul or neo soul, often comparing her to Billie Holiday in lyrical delivery and grouping her with Maxwell and D’Angelo in musical genre. She grew up listening to ’70s soul and ’80s hip-hop, but Erykah Badu drew more comparisons to Billie Holiday upon her breakout in 1997, after the release of her first album, Baduizm. The grooves and production on the album are bass-heavy R&B, but Badu’s languorous, occasionally tortured vocals and delicate phrasing immediately removed her from the legion of cookiecutter female R&B singers. A singer/songwriter responsible for all but one of the songs on Baduizm, she found a number 12 hit with her first single, “On & On,” which pushed the album to number two on the charts. The New York Times described Badu’s groundbreaking debut, 1997’s Baduizm, as “traditional soul vocals, staccato hip-hop rhythms and laid-back jazzy grooves.” Yet, hindsight reveals that Badu’s debut was more than just an album, it was the introduction of a new lifestyle. The music evoked speakeasies, incense, head wraps, and boho coffee shop culture all in one easy breath. Propelled by the lead single “On & On,” the album went multi-platinum, winning her two Grammys for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Album. Badu topped Rolling Stone’s Reader’s poll for Best R&B Artist, and Entertainment Weekly named her Best New Female Singer of 1997. Born Erica Wright in Dallas in 1971, Badu attended a school of the arts and was working as a teacher and part-time singer when she opened for D’Angelo at a 1994 show. D’Angelo’s manager, Kedar Massenburg, was impressed with the performance and hooked her up with the singer to record a cover of the Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell duet “Precious Love.” He also signed Badu to his recently formed Kedar Entertainment label, and served as producer for Baduizm, which also starred bassist Ron Carter and members of hip-hop avatars the Roots on several tracks. The first single, “On & On,” became a number one R&B hit in early 1997, and Baduizm followed it to the top of the R&B album charts by March. Opening for R&B acts as well as rap’s Wu-Tang Clan, Erykah Badu stopped just short of number one on the pop album charts in April. Lead single On & On

reached #12 on the singles charts in both the U.S. and UK. Badu received notice for her introspective lyrics and jazzy, bass-heavy sound, and was hailed as one of the leading lights of the burgeoning neo soul genre. Baduizm eventually went triple platinum and, along with On & On, won Grammy Awards at the 1998 ceremonies. During that year, Badu became involved with rapper André 3000 of OutKast, with whom she had a child, Seven, who was born in 1997. Their relationship ended sometime in the late 90s. Badu recorded her first live album, Live, while pregnant with Seven, and the release of the recording coincided with the birth to her child. Live reached #4 on the Billboard charts, selling double platinum, and spawned another R&B hit single in Tyrone a song chiding a selfish, cheap, and inattentive boyfriend. Badu also collaborated with The Roots (who had previously handled production duties on a number of tracks on Baduizm) on their breakthrough 1999 release, Things Fall Apart. She was featured on the song You Got Me co-written by Jill Scott, which hit the top 40 and won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. In 2000 she returned with her highly anticipated second studio album, Mama’s Gun, which was co-produced by Badu, James Poyser, Bilal, and Jay Dee and contained the hit single “Bag Lady.” Worldwide Underground, a loose affair billed as an EP despite being longer than many full-lengths, was released in 2003. In 2003, she founded her non-profit group, B.L.I.N.D. (Beautiful Love Incorporated Non-Profit Development), which is geared toward creating social change through economic, artistic, and cultural development. Among B.L.I.N.D.’s many accomplishments, the organization has provided arts, crafts, and dance classes to children displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Also in 2004, Badu’s charitable efforts helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the scholarship fund at St. Phillips School and Community Center in Dallas, Texas. After almost four years and the birth of a daughter, Puma, it was revealed in 2007 that Badu had three albums in the works over the course of 2007 and 2008. Honey, a new single produced by 9th Wonder, was leaked online in November 2007, and the new album, titled New Amerykah Part One (4th World War), was released on February 26, 2008. Her next step, 2008’s New Amerykah, Pt. 1: 4th World War, was a heavy and abstract release featuring collaborations with the members of Sa-Ra and Georgia Anne Muldrow; it reached number two on the Billboard 200 and Hot R&B/ Hip-Hop Albums charts. New Amerykah, Pt. 2: Return of the Ankh, looser and more playful than Pt. 1, followed in 2010. Appearances on Flying Lotus’ Until the Quiet Comes (2011), Robert Glasper’s Black Radio (2012), Tyler, The Creator’s Wolf and Bonobo’s The North Borders (both 2013), brought the artist to 2015, when she released the official mixtape But You Caint Use My Phone on the Motown label.

Tonight we dropped by Rockefellers to see guitarist Eric Gales Perform. Eric is a blues-rock guitarist, originally hailed as a child prodigy. As of 2019 Gales has recorded eighteen albums for major record labels and has done session and tribute work. He has also contributed vocals on several records by the Memphis rap groups Prophet Posse and Three 6 Mafia under the name Lil E. As both an African-American left-handed guitarist of extraordinary ability and an expressive vocalist, it is natural for people to compare Eric to Hendrix. But Eric has developed a unique hybrid blues/rock sound that also draws upon influences as diverse as Albert King and Frank Gambale. A unique amalgam of styles, Eric Gales stands head and shoulders among other guitarists in his genre. Eric’s show this night at Rockefellers was nothing less than incendiary. He was smokin’ the entire time, and put on one of the best shows we’ve ever seen. Our friend Val Seals let us know that her new cover project, The ArchiveZ were performing over at Rock N Ray’s, so we decided to check them out this night. In the past we’ve always seen Val perform with her original project, WolfeBlitzer, so we figured that this was probably going to be a good act to check out. We’ve always been pretty impressed with WolfeBlitzer. Well, it looks like we made a good decision. The ArchiveZ were really good, as we expected. The band performs a bit of old school Metal, which is right up our alley. From AC/DC to Heart to Judas Priest to Black Sabbath, The ArchiveZ covered all the bases. Val sounded great, as usual, and the rest of the band was equally as impressive. When you get a chance, check out The ArchiveZ. In the meantime, you can catch a little of their performance live on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television at http://www.houstonmusicnews.net. We’ve got three videos from the show to share with you, so you can start watching anytime. Here they are performing “The Green Manalishi With The Two Pronged Crown”, originally written by Fleetwood Mac, but made famous by Judas Priest @houstonundergroundofficial or on Facebook at facebook.com/ houstonundrgrnd. Robin Trower Performs At The House Of Blues New Album • Coming Closer To The Day The legendary Robin Trower will be returning to Houston this month for a special intimate concert at the House of Blues on Saturday, April 27th. Robin is touring in support of his new album release, Coming Closer To The Day. This is Robin Trower’s 23rd solo album since leaving the band, Procol Harum. At the age of 74, Robin shows no sign of slowing down. Every couple of years he releases a new album. He had recorded six albums with that group before he felt the need to move out on his own, which was definitely a wise choice on his behalf. His catalog of music is certainly something to be marveled at. He has produced countless wonderful songs and albums and maintains a fan base to be envied at by virtually any musician out there today. During this time, Robin has rarely strayed from being a solo musician and you won’t find him guesting on other people’s albums. The only time that these two things happened was when he joined up with Cream bassist/vocalist Jack Bruce for two albums, 1981’s B.L.T. and 1982’s Truce before returning back to his solo career, and then back again with Jack Bruce in 2008 for Seven Moons. He told us that “Jack and I had a great time making Seven Moons. We were both proud of that album.” The next foray out was when he joined up with ex-Roxy Music pioneer, Bryan Ferry, for two of Bryan’s albums, 1993’s Taxi, 1994’s Mamouna and 2002’s Frantic. As he explains it, “Working with Bryan, I loved the album Mamouna. I liked my time with Bryan Ferry. With Bryan it was a completely different experience. I was only there to help him. That was a great time really. I really loved working with him. He’s such a gifted artist.” Then of course, there was that brief Procol Harum reunion in 1991, which resulted in the album, Prodigal Stranger. Other than those few times, Trower has remained true unto himself producing some of the finest rock albums ever made. His most recent albums include The Playful Heart (2010), Roots And Branches (2013), Something’s About To Change (2015), Where You Are Going (2016), and Time And Emotion (2017) which debuted at #2 on Billboard’s Blues Chart. Was there any other artist that Robin Trower would have liked to work with… You bet! “I really would have loved to work with James Brown,” says Robin. “Of course there’s no chance of that now.” Robin tells us that he just can’t stop. He’s continuously writing and coming out with new material. “The thing is that I’m just writing new songs all the time,” says Robin. “When I get to the point where I have six or seven new songs, I just get into the studio and do them. It doesn’t just stop. It’s something I love to do. It’s my hobby, as well as my living as it were. I just love to do it. While I keep coming up with new songs, I’m going to keep doing albums. That’s really all it is. The songs always come when I’m playing the guitar,” explains Trower of his creative process. “Everything starts from there…” Even as we talked to him about this new album, he told us that he’s already recorded 7 songs for a new album that should be out within another year or two. As he told us, “If you’re not moving forward, you’re just standing still.” He just finds inspiration in everything that he does and always keeps an electric guitar close to him at all times for when the inspiration strikes him. Basically the guitar is just another appendage for him, like another arm. It’s always there. His trusty Fender Stratocaster is always close to hand with a Marshall amp waiting nearby. In addition to constantly writing and recording, Robin also indulges himself in his next passion, touring. He seems to make a lot of forays onto the road spreading the gospel of rock wherever he goes. Robin’s technique in recording is very meticulous. He does just about everything himself on his albums. He writes the songs, performs the guitar, performs the bass, does all the vocals, and then utilizes a drummer for the other parts. He performs everything on his albums, except the drums. He joked with us about perhaps he should learn to play those too. When Robin first burst onto the music scene, there were those obvious comparisons between him and the late Jimi Hendrix. His first recordings did kind of bear an uncanny resemblance to Jimi’s blues/psychedelic sound from his Electric Ladyland era, but Robin quickly illustrated his own sound and despite being a big fan of Jimi Hendrix, he definitely had a style all his own. By the time his second album, Bridge Of Sighs hit the charts, despite being heralded as the next coming of Hendrix, he also proved he was in a different category altogether. After that the hits just came on coming. Al-
bums like For Earth Below, Robin Trower Live!, Long Misty Days, and In City Dreams just propelled him into a league of his own. Now Robin is back with his latest masterpiece of music, Coming Closer To The Day. Coming Closer To The Day is filled with 12 magnificent songs showcasing his extreme talents on guitar, bass, and vocals, along with his wonderful writing ability. Each song also reveals a little bit about the man himself, making them small vignettes looking into the soul of Robin Trower himself and revealing a bit of his introspective self. “The title song “Coming Closer To The Day,” explains Robin, “was very much about me thinking about what was going on in my life… What I’ve been through… and also coming to terms with the fact that I’m nearer the end than the beginning. But I think also that I’m saying to myself, ‘If you want to get where you want to be, you’ve got to work harder.” “Ghosts,” continues Robin, “is me. I’m talking about me. Things from the past come up to haunt you. Things that you felt you didn’t do right, or you could have done better. They’re really small things. They just pop into your mind and you think, ‘oh, I didn’t do right there.’ That kind of thing. That’s basically what that song is about.” The song “Diving Bell” as explained by Robin, “is a straight forward, ‘I lost my girl song.’” And although Robin didn’t necessarily lose his girl, he didn’t really lose the girl. He explains, “Not in that way, I lost my wife five years ago. She passed away. However, I think that song is more of a fictional story. It’s not about me.” “Don’t Ever Change” is a love song to my late wife. That’s very personal,” continues Trower. We were married in 1968, We were partners in our life together. We did what was right for each other.” “‘Diving Bell’ is probably my favourite track on the album,” he says. “That one went down really early, and it’s got that funky bluesy kinda thing that just hits me right where I live. “Truth Or Lies,” that one was quite hard to pull off. I love the song, but I recorded it once and wasn’t happy with it, so I started from scratch
again. It’s got quite a strong early R&B flavour to it. That song is not really about me. I’m writing from the viewpoint of a guy whose loved one has been messing around – y’know, ‘I can’t make up my mind if it’s truth or lies’. “Someone Of Great Renown,” again, that song isn’t about me, but it’s maybe someone that I’d like to be. It sort of reminds me a bit of Hoochie Coochie Man, harks back to that Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf kind of thing. The calibre of the songwriting on Coming Closer To The Day is matched by Trower’s performances, with the bandleader handling all instruments except the drums. His basslines are supple and rhythmic, his vocals growl and soar (“I think I’m getting better at picking keys to sing in”) and the lead guitar work only adds to his reputation as an all-time-great soloist. “When I’m working on a song idea,” he says, “it has to be something I’d really like to play lead guitar on, otherwise I don’t bother with it. In terms of the lead guitar, I tried to make it as soulful as possible. With the solos, I’ve got a rough idea of the area that a piece of lead work will work in. Then I just go in and see what happens. There’s always a certain amount of freedom. It’s loose and relaxed, messing about and trying different things. I’m trying to capture something that happens, rather than something that’s preworked out. It’s got to come from the gut.” Now, Robin is back on the road on tour in support of his new album, and as he tells us, life on the road isn’t quite that bad. He has his own way of coping with it. “Well, I’ve got it down to a fine art now. It doesn’t have to be too stressful or too tiring. I think still the traveling can be a bit much. It can be a long week. If you do five on the trot, by the end of that run, you can be a little burned out. I did a lifetime of being on the road. I don’t do it very much now. It’s usually one tour of the States, and I might do two or three weeks in Europe. That’s all the touring I do now.” Walking on stage is still a thrill for Robin. It’s something that he loves more than anything. He tells us that the first thought through his mind is, “How lovely to see you all. That’s the great thing about walking on stage and seeing a lot of happy faces that are glad to see you. You know what I mean. That’s great! I had two really excellent tours in ’17 and ’18,” he reflects. “A really great turnout, great response from the crowd. It’s been wonderful, really.” This month’s show with Robin Trower at the House of Blues is definitely going to be a great trip down memory lane, however he tells us to expect to hear some of the new numbers. There will probably be “A minimum of four,” says Robin. “You can expect to hear “Diving Bell,” “Tide Of Confusion,” “Ghosts,” and “Truth Or Lies.” I think those (songs) have a good chance at working live. Not all of the songs on the album would be transferable (live). I think they’ve got a good chance at working live.” Robin tells us that he just loves performing all his songs for his fans. They never get old to him nor does he get tired of performing them. “I wouldn’t have a song in the set that I didn’t love to play. I love to play “Too Rolling Stoned.” I really enjoy playing all the old songs, but “Too Rolling Stoned” is great.” Fans attending Robin Trower’s show this month at the House of Blues on Saturday, April 27th can be guaranteed that this will be a great concert and one that they’ll be remembering for a long time. I’m sure everybody attending with have a great time, so we’ll see you at the Robin Trower concert this month.

When The Deadbolt Breaks Performs at The 19th Hole
When we go to The 19th Hole, we always expect something a bit heavier than what we normally run into around town. We really like that. It’s always great so see something completely different. Tonight at The 19th Hole, it was exactly what we expected. On stage was the heavy metal band, When The Deadbolt Breaks. For more than a decade, When the Deadbolt Breaks have carved a niche for themselves within the interplay of extreme genres. They are no less at home in grind than they are in pummeling sludge or ambient soundscaping, casting forth triumphant riffs or proffering murder-dirge nods at a volume level that can only be considered violent. Led by guitarist/vocalist Aaron Lewis, their four to-date full-lengths read as a chronicle of threat that even unto the Connecticut-based outfit’s moniker tells of some lurking danger in the dark. When the Deadbolt Breaks are immediately recognizable style and malice, and they continue to push forward into a filth and Treasures Estate in emotion. So, as you can expect, we’ve got some great grind for you on Sales & More HMNTV - Houston Music News Television to check out right now. Just Treasures Estate tune into http://www.houstonmusicnews.net and start watching When Sales & More says, “We The Deadbolt Breaks. work for you”! They cover Houston to Galveston and the surrounding areas, and handle all types of Estate Sales from a simple downsizing project to a major liquidation sale. No job is too small. They offer a free no-obligation meeting and are here to help take care of the worries of liquidating your family’s treasures and do the best for YOU. Estate sales will be advertised on the Web, Facebook, Estatesale.com, Estatesales.net, Estatesales.org, and more. You get: Nothing up front, and you’re only charged 30%, receive 70% of the sales, and paid 5-7 days after the sale. You also get a free visit to your residence for prep work. Treasures will set up your estate sale, promote it, provide supplies that are needed, and provide clean-up afterwards. Hours are from 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week. Call 832-671-3793 to make your appointment.
The Weeds Perform at the Jailhouse Saloon Tonight we’re at The Jailhouse Saloon to see The Weeds. The Weeds are a pretty popular band here at The Jail, and it’s no surprise. These guys put on a pretty good show. Tonight’s show was filled with a little of everything... rock... country... you name it. From Sublime’s “Santeria” to Johnny Cash’s “Fosolm Prison Blues, The Weeds mixed it up with some great tunes. They even managed to squeez out a little Santana and Grand Funk Railroad for us. It definitely was a great evening.

When we saw that Buddy Whittington was performing at Katie’s Bar in Bailiff, we hightailed it over there to see him. Buddy is just an extraordinary guitarist and always puts on a fine performance. For those of you who didn’t know, Buddy was a member of the legendary John Mayall’s band for many years, where he learned all the secrets of being a fine Blues musician. There’s nothing like training under the best, and without a doubt, John Mayall is one of the best. During the early 1980s, he formed and sang with his own band, The Sidemen. In 1991, they opened for John Mayall and when Coco Montoya left the Bluesbreakers in 1993, Mayall called him to take his place in the band. In Mayall’s band Whittington sang occasionally and contributed to songwriting. When, after fifteen years, Mayall disbanded the Bluesbreakers, Whittington continued to gig in Texas, but also joined forces with Roger Cotton and Pete Stroud, who had toured with Mayall as part of Peter Green’s band. Since then, Buddy has either released or performed on 14 albums with other performers, so there’s a lot of his work out there to be enjoyed. For us, we really enjoy seeing him perform live and Katie’s is more often the place we catch him at. As we expected, tonight’s show at Katie’s was a lot of fun and Buddy was performing at his best. Actually, he’s always at his best. It’s always a good show. Right now we’d like to share a couple of performances from this Katie’s show with you, so here he is on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television at http://www.houstonmusicnews.net. Sit back now and enjoy the amazing Buddy Whittington.

We dropped by Diamond Jim’s to visit with our old friend Pee Wee Bowen this Saturday Night. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Pee Wee, he has been performing around the Texas City area for about 50 years now and has built up quite a following. His repertoire consists greatly of early R&B songs, but he also throws a couple of rock classics in there. The band is also one of the top acts around. It’s filled with a lot of veteran musicians, including our friends Jim Fulton (guitar) and Ken Woodard (drums). Check ‘em out sometime if you’re into a little R&B and be sure to drop by Diamond Jim’s whenever you’re in the Texas City area. B2B Lanke 3am-4am. The Bannisters Perform at Vollie Ray’s Circus When we came through the door at Vollie Ray’s this evening, we knew we were in for something special. The Bannisters, from Austin, were here performing. Their energetic performances and irresistible rock jams have brought them to various festivals including SXSW and Deep Ellum Arts Fest. You just never know what you’re going to be seeing at Vollie Ray’s/. This act was definitely a breathe of fresh air. We had a great time listening to them perform.
Leo Trio Perform at Loaded Barrels On stage at Loaded Barrels this night was the Leo Trio. Here’ a tight three piece outfit with a lot of great material to choose from. They performed some Hendrix (“Little Wing”), Tom Petty (“Last Dance With Mary Jane”), Sublime (“Caress Me Down”), and Alice In Chains (“Would?”) to name a few. It really made for a good evening of rock, as interpreted by the Leo Trio, who definitely put their own spin on it. Leave it up to Loaded Barrels to keep bringing in great acts. We always have a blast there!

Buckcherry Performs Songs From Their New Album “Warpaint” at Warehouse Live Buckcherry will be returning to Houston for a very special performance at Warehouse Live this month on April 20th. They just released their eighth studio album, Warpaint on March 8 of this year, so the band is hitting the road in support of the new release. Their show in Houston is bound to be a very special show for the band, April 20 marks 20 years since the 1999 release of Buckcherry’s self-titled debut album. It’s been a wild ride and one that Todd refers to as “absolutely insane.” “After spending all fall recording our new album Warpaint, we are excited to play these new songs along with all of the Buckcherry favorites on the road throughout all of 2019,” commented frontman Josh Todd. “I want everybody to draw their own conclusions, but for me, it’s the best Buckcherry record since 15. I just feel like it’s so reminiscent of that time as well. Back at that time, we had gone through a lot of lineup changes. We had been out of the public eye for a while. We had a lot to prove and we really were thorough in the songwriting. The same thing has happened for Warpaint, and I’m so very proud of it. We worked really hard on it and there was a lot of passion. It’s such a great band and there’s a lot to celebrate. This is our eighth record, 20 years in the game. I’m just so happy to have a record this good after all these years.” In addition to the new album, Josh
looks back at the last 20 years and feels that he’s accomplished everything musical in life that he’s set out to do so far. “That’s really what I visualized and dreamed about when I was a kid. I wanted to create a catalog of music and be in one band for a long time, and I’ve definitely accomplished it. I’ve worked really hard for it. It’s been really humbling at times, but such is life. I’m so passionate about what I do, and it really comes out of passion, because there’s always going to be peaks and valleys and you’ve got to make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons.” The trek, which also features rising rockers Joyous Wolf, began on March 6 in Sacramento, Calif. and will finish up two months later on May 5, circling the U.S. and parts of Canada before returning to California to close it out in Montclair. “Good things come to those who wait and we have been very patient and thorough with the song writing for Warpaint, we took into consideration all the factors and what this record means to not only us but the great Buckcherry fans around the world,” Todd said of the album. “This record takes the listener on an unforgettable journey and I’m very proud of it.” Buckcherry’s new disc will mark the band’s first release since the departures of guitarist Keith Nelson and drummer Xavier Muriel and addition of Kevin Roentgen and Sean Winchester, respectively.
When it comes to the album’s title, Josh reveals that it follows kind of a theme from what’s happening today with the art of tattooing. “We’re fans of one-word record titles. I think that’s really a statement. We kept coming back to “Warpaint.” There’s this trend going on in music and mostly in the rap with the hip-hop artists … everybody’s tattooing their faces and tattooing has just really gotten to a whole new level than when I was a kid. Before I got tattooed, I was really fascinated with Indians and I loved the warpaint. Indians tattooed themselves. The boys would tattoo themselves when they became men and women would tattoo themselves when they were pregnant. It was like a celebration and it was also something they would do to get ready for war. There’s much meaning be-
hind symbolism and putting symbols on yourself, and I always loved that. We’re pretty heavily tattooed as well, so it was just fitting. I haven’t been tattooed in a long time and I’m entering this other phase of my life. I just went through a lot of change and it’s just starting to get really good inside my body, my head space, and so I’m ready for phase two. I always wanted to be bodysuited. I’m pretty close to being body-suited, but I’ve got some sections to fill up. Next, I think I’m adding some filler on my stomach. It’s time to transition out of this “Chaos” on my stomach. I got it when I was very young and it meant a lot to me and I’m done with it. So I’m going to cover that up and throw some spider webs under my spider and then blend all the Japanese flow up on my chest.”

The pedigree of hallowed ’60s trio Cream - Ginger Baker’s son Kofi Baker, Jack Bruce’s son Malcolm Bruce and Eric Clapton’s nephew Will Johns - will bring to Houston The Music of Cream - 50th Anniversary World Tour at the House Of Blues on April 18th. The outing celebrates the extraordinary music and legacy their family members created on the heels of the 50th anniversary since the original lineup’s farewell U.S. tour of 1968. . Throughout the extensive multi-media show, Baker (drums), Bruce (bass, vocals) and Johns (guitar, vocals) perform songs such as “Sunshine of Your Love,” “Crossroads,” “Spoonful” and “White Room” and tell personal stories, while footage of their fathers and mentors is shown on the big screen. First launched in 2017 to rave reviews in Australia and New Zealand, The Music of Cream performed over 40 shows in 2018 across North America and the United Kingdom. Throughout the extensive multi-media show, Kofi Baker (drums), Malcolm Bruce (bass, vocals) and Will Johns (guitar, vocals) perform songs such as “Sunshine of Your Love,” “Crossroads,” “Spoonful” and “White Room” and tell personal stories, while footage of their fathers and mentors is shown on the big screen. Now, Baker says, “I feel more positive that we played the music the way Cream did; we were able to stretch out and improvise and the audience was right there with us. I really enjoyed playing with Will and Malcolm as we share a bond over this music that our fathers created. And meeting the fans after the shows and hearing their thoughts really validated and inspired me to keep playing this music.” Bruce adds, “The uniqueness of the approach to Cream’s music means that I learn and grow every night we play. There is always something new to be discovered in the music: tempo, feel, groove, notes, dynamics, inflection. It is truly wonderful to be able to improvise onstage.” “The audiences seemed to appreciate, and enjoy, that we were not just copying and actually putting our own slant on things,” notes Johns. During its heartbreakingly short lifespan, Cream was an explosive musical cocktail that provided the super-group blueprint for others to follow. The group’s third album, Wheels of Fire (1968), was the world’s first platinum-selling double album, and collectively they sold more than 15 million copies of their albums worldwide. Not surprisingly, Rolling Stone ranked the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group (inducted in 1993) as 67th in their ‘100 Greatest Artists of All Time’ list. Apart from an equally brief reunion in 2005 of seven shows at London’s Royal Albert Hall and New York’s Madison Square Garden, Cream retained an almost mythological status in the music world, right up until the passing of Jack Bruce in 2014. This, for many fans, marked the end of an era and an acceptance that there would never really be another opportunity to celebrate the group’s legacy. That is, until The Music of Cream - 50th Anniversary World Tour emerged.
“...delivered a stunning set of music that celebrated the legacy that was and still is Cream...The Music of Cream was carefully, faithfully and vividly re-created.” - Neon Grafitti
“This band does a great job of not only paying tribute to the music but ‘keeping it alive.’” - Glide Magazine “[This] isn’t your usual tribute band playing the hits...what sets this show apart is probably the shared DNA between the players and the members of Cream...If you’re a fan of Cream, I recommend catching this tour if it comes to your town.” - VintageRock.com “These three can play and the music of Cream sounds as innovative and electrifying as it did more than 50 years ago.” - The Daily Item
