2016 MEMBERSHIP GUIDE
CELEBRATING
45 YEARS OF BOBCAT PRIDE The Bobcat Club was founded in 1971. That same year former president and distinguished alumnus Lyndon Baines Johnson made the first major donations to the Bobcat Club with a pledge of $25,000, plus 300 sets of books. With this gift, he became a lifetime member of the Bobcat Club. It was an enduring declaration of his commitment to supporting academic opportunity through collegiate athletics. It is the same mission and legacy we honor every day as we continue to support our student-athletes on the field and in the classroom.
“We talk about development as a student, as a person in society and on that football field because I think it all works together. We’re going to work really hard to make you guys proud and really excited about being a part of Bobcat Nation.” Head Football Coach Everett Withers
2
Each student-athlete at Texas State has worked hard to earn a place here, as a student and a competitor. The Bobcat Club exists to make sure they each have the resources they need to make the most of this opportunity. Our supporters are as vital to our success as any player or coach. As the fundraising arm of Texas State Athletics, the Bobcat Club is the link between our student-athletes and our most dedicated fans. Together, we are a team without limits. Bobcat Club Purpose and Values
LE T TER FROM THE ATHLE T IC DIREC T OR
Texas State Bobcats, In the world of college athletics, we often talk about commitment. Commitment to ourselves, commitment to our teammates, commitment to the plan, to hard work, and to excellence. 45 years ago, Lyndon Baines Johnson showed his commitment to the Bobcat Club when he gave the department its first major gift — a $25,000 donation. With that gift, our university’s most distinguished alumnus became a lifetime member of the Bobcat Club. In the decades following the 1971 establishment of the Bobcat Club by its first board members, it has grown into the organization it is today, contributing to the lives of countless student-athletes along the way. In much the same way as our student-athletes pledge their commitment to their teammates and coaches, I am asking for your total commitment to the mission of the Bobcat Club. With your help, we can transform the lives of our student-athletes with a quality athletic experience and a college degree that will benefit them the rest of their lives. As you turn the pages of this brochure, and see the individual lives affected by an athletic scholarship, I hope you will consider pledging your commitment to the Bobcat Club. It is the best way to ensure we can continue to help our student-athletes write their own success stories. Take that one step forward with us, and invest in the lives of Texas State student-athletes.
Dr. Larry Teis Director of Athletics, Texas State University 3
“BOBCAT FOOTBALL TEACHES YOU TO OVERCOME PROBLEMS,
ON THE FIELD
AND IN LIFE.
TO PLAY AT THIS LEVEL YOU HAVE TO
GIVE
AND
SACRIFICE.” GABE SCHRADE tight end, sophomore, finance and marketing major — “I think investing is more than just business. When I work on footwork or catching the ball, I’m building the habits that create success. We love our donors because they are investing in our success now and in the future.”
“IT’S SOMETHING NEW EVERY DAY,
IN CLASS OR
IN PRACTICE.
I COULDN’T IMAGINE A SCHOOL BEING
A BETTER FIT FOR ME
THAN TEXAS STATE.”
JORDAN KOHL right side hitter, junior, interdisciplinary studies major — “Our supporters are so great. We even have donors who follow us when we go on the road. Having our supporters and fans with us, supporting us and creating that ‘gym culture’ is what makes playing volleyball wonderful.”
“EARNING MY SCHOLARSHIP WAS
REALLY HELPFUL FOR ME
AND MY FAMILY. IT WAS A BIG RELIEF TO HAVE A WAY TO PAY FOR SCHOOL.”
THEODORE “TEDDY” HOFFMAN outfield / infield, sophomore, business management major — “There are a lot of parallels between success on the field and as a student. The focus and the discipline you need to build good habits in baseball is a lot like the work you have to put in to succeed academically or in business.”
A team will never reach its full potential if only 20 percent of the players are invested in success. That’s the portion of scholarship and academic costs currently covered by donor contributions.

REMAINING COST OF EDUCATION
LET’S GET EVERY BOBCAT IN THE GAME.
Picture playing 1-on-5 in basketball or a quarterback leaving his receivers and offensive line on the bench. Our teams wouldn’t have a chance to succeed. Likewise, only providing 20 percent of the support needed for our student-athletes limits our potential. The other 80 percent of scholarship funding must come from other areas of the athletic department budget, diverting resources that could be used for recruiting, facilities or attracting and retaining the best coaches and staff. But there is good news. Our task is not impossible. More than 1,800 fans like you stepped up in 2015 and set a Texas State fundraising record, giving $1.3 million to support scholarships for our student-athletes. We’re truly grateful to every supporter who helped get us to this point and who gave us a historic fundraising year. Our growth over the last decade would not have been possible without you. Closing our funding gap is essential to making sure Texas State does not fall behind our peer institutions. We need your help to continue providing opportunities for student-athletes to pursue their dreams through education. It’s a big challenge, but Bobcats have thrived on challenge for generations.

Randi Rupp pitched her first collegiate no-hitter against UL Monroe in March 2015, followed by a perfect game against Houston Baptist on April 15 — the first Bobcat perfect game in seven seasons.
BOBCATS SUPPORT OUR TEAMS. ON THE FIELD, IN THE CLASSROOM.
WE RISE TOGETHER.
12
Cost of attendance, starting with scholarships, is the single greatest expense faced by every collegiate athletics program. Across the nation, schools are expanding the definition of “cost of attendance” to include additional aid to student-athletes, like transportation and lodging.
In 2016, 375 athletes on 16 teams will represent the Bobcats in competition across the nation. Our cost to provide them with the academic and athletic experience they deserve will rise above $7 million. This is the landscape of collegiate sports. As hard as student-athletes and coaches work to perform their best on the field, we need to be just as dedicated to keeping Texas State on our upward track. Note: Covering “cost of attendance” will mean about $500,000 in additional aid this year.

NEXT F OR WA R D This year, we are setting the bar higher for each member of our team — players, students, coaches, alumni and fans. To build on the progress we’ve made and to meet our growing needs, giving levels will rise for the first time in more than five years. Your contribution is essential, whether you are a first-time donor, a returning member or you’ve been a reliable supporter for years.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Earned their second consecutive post-season tournament berth in 2015 (Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament)
STEP
FIRST-TIME GIFT
You love Texas State, and you believe in its mission to advance our student-athletes in the classroom and in competition. With your first gift you are making a positive impact on our programs and creating opportunities for success.
We decided to support the Bobcat Club because these are the competitive young people that upon graduation will take our companies into the future.

RENEW YOUR
UPPORT
If you’ve given to the Bobcat Club before, you know the benefits of joining and the impact you’ve made on our student-athletes. Renewing your pledge strengthens our foundation and helps us build momentum toward future success.
LEVEL
Much of who I am and what I achieved started at Texas State. Any opportunity to give back to Texas State is vital to me. As a Bobcat Club donor, my contributions directly impact student-athletes who give so much of themselves on a daily basis for Texas State.
Diana Spiller, Bobcat Club Member
MULTI-YEA
UP If you’ve been giving to the Bobcat Club at the same level for some time, take the next step by increasing to the next highest donor level. If you’re a Maroon Level donor, consider Bronze. Gold Level donor? Consider Diamond. You’ll receive improved benefits and make an even greater impact on our program.
COMMITMENT
Success over time takes commitment. The student-athlete for whom your gift may have the biggest impact may not even be a student here yet. If you’re committed to the ongoing mission of the Bobcat Club, consider a multi-year agreement. You can choose a giving plan that increases your pledge each year or sign a multi-year agreement for the same amount each year to make an impact on current Bobcats and future Bobcats as well.
IMPACT
AR
GIVING
I donate to the Bobcat Club to give back to the university that gave so much to me. I know my support helps fund student-athletes and gives them a chance to fall in love with Texas State as I did and grow with our rising star. It is our duty as alumni to support future Bobcats and their development.
Trent Burk, Bobcat Club Member
Leave a legacy with our program. Ensure that your passion for Texas State Athletics is remembered for years to come and for future generations of student-athletes. Consider starting an endowment in your family name, include Texas State Athletics in your planned giving or donate to an upcoming construction project to ensure that Texas State student-athletes know the level of your commitment to their success and the success of this department.

Gabe was told his football career could end in high school after two serious injuries to his knee and back. It took nine months of rehab to return to the sport he loves. Even post recovery, Gabe puts in extra work to keep developing his football skills.
Jordan’s road to Texas State began with summer volleyball camps in high school. She was named 2014 SBC Freshman of the Year, and 2015 Second-Team All-SBC.
As a youth, Teddy Hoffman played many sports including basketball and football. In fact, he only played one season of little league before committing to baseball full time in high school.
Jordan was born with a hearing impairment, but it’s never held her back. She initially chose to study audiology, but changed her major to interdisciplinary studies. “I want a degree that gives me options to start a career right away or go on to grad school.”
A business management major at the McCoy College of Business Administration, Teddy earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. “I would definitely love to be at the top of a company or to start my own,” he said. “My degree will open a lot of gateways and directions I can go.”
He brings the same passion and energy off the field, as an honor roll student and by serving in the student senate. “I’m just so honored to represent Texas State. I wear my maroon and gold everywhere I go.”

“As a former Texas State student-athlete, I can speak to the transformative impact of an athletic scholarship from personal experience. Looking back on my professional career, both in the NFL and now as the owner of my own business, I know it all started with what I learned on the field and in the classroom. Giving back to the Bobcat Club to support today’s student-athletes is my way of paying it forward, and I’m proud to call myself a Texas State graduate and Bobcat Club member.”
“My time on campus and as a member of the Bobcat football team had an indelible impact on my life. The lessons I learned on the field and in the classroom have carried me into my professional life. Now I want to help create opportunities for the next generation of Bobcat student-athletes, and for that reason, I’m proud to support the Bobcat Club.”

S T UDENT — CON T INUING OUR AC A DEMIC SUCCESS S T ORY — As much as we love to compete, academics come first at Texas State. 56 Bobcat student-athletes were recognized for making the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner’s List with GPAs of 3.5 and above. (Academic year 2014–2015)
Our student-athletes’ dedication to scholarship is reflected by their graduation rate (74%), as they prepare for outstanding careers beyond college sports.
Business administration and exercise and sports science are the most popular majors, but our student-athletes are pursuing degrees from electrical engineering to criminal justice to studio art and more.

CLOSER TO THE GOAL. IMPACT-GIVING BUILDS OUR LEGACY. In November 2015 San Antonio philanthropists Dan and Cindee Diepenhorst gave $1 million to support Bobcat athletic scholarships. Their gift creates a matching fund that doubles each new endowment established in athletics. Gifts ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 will qualify for this match. The goal is to encourage involvement from other passionate Texas State alumni to increase the overall athletics endowment by $2 million. The Board of Regents approved naming the Champions Club Level at Bobcat Stadium the Dan and Cindee Diepenhorst Champions Club Level.
Impact gifts provide a solid foundation as our programs continue to grow. There are many impact-giving options that allow you to make the gift of your choice while benefiting your personal finances, including: Endowments Naming Opportunities Planned Giving

When LBJ made his initial $25,000 donation to the Bobcat Club in 1971, he issued a challenge. He wanted to see Bobcats everywhere unite to match his gift, giving at whatever level they could afford. The original board not only rose to meet that challenge, they more than doubled their goal. The goals may have grown over the years, but Bobcats still rise to meet the challenge.
Payment Info The Bobcat Club accepts checks, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. Payments can be made all at once or spread throughout the year via automatic checking account withdrawals or automatic credit card payments. Contact the Bobcat Club office to set up payments. If you make a pledge and choose to send payments on your own schedule, half of the payment must be received by August 1, 2016, for you to receive your Bobcat Club benefits.
