Letter From The Desk of Chris Park Dear Bobcat Club Donors, The start of a new fall semester is always an exciting time for everyone within the Texas State Athletic Department. The end of August closes down the busy summer preparation period and welcomes in the start of a new athletic year with football, volleyball, soccer, and cross country. Many donors ask if we take off a lot of time in the summer and while we do try to get away for a week or two, those months are crucial in our department for raising funds needed to be successful in the fall. As you know last year was a record setting year for dollars raised and new donors added to the Bobcat Club. Our staff is happy to report that we have already surpassed our record numbers from last year with four months of fundraising in this fiscal year to go! As a staff we have continued to make a consensus effort to increase Bobcat Club gifts at a rate never before seen at Texas State. For the second year in a row a big thank you goes out to our Bobcat Club Leadership Council for putting in the hard work and bringing on board new donors this summer. This group did a fabulous job organizing teams around the state, renewing current donors, and using their networks to get more people involved in supporting Texas State Athletics. Below are some quick facts as to where the Bobcat Club stands currently regarding dollars raised for student athlete scholarships: • To date the Bobcat Club has seen a 20% increase in dollars raised for scholarships over this time last year • To date the Bobcat Club has seen a 45% increase in donors to the Bobcat Club • The Bobcat Club Gift In Kind program has seen an increase of $65,000 in trade supporting our athletic programs and athletic department. As you can see, everyone who is a Bobcat Club donor deserves a pat on the back. Tremendous strides continue to be made and our goals are still within reach. We continue to encourage existing donors to reach out to their Bobcat friends and ask that they to get involved with Texas State Athletics and support scholarships for student athletes. ----------------------I am excited to announce that the Athletic Development office added a new member to the team this summer in John Sorsby. John joins the staff as a Development Assistant after graduating this past May from Texas State. During his time at Texas State, John was active on main campus involved with IFC and lettered on the 2008 Bobcat championship football team. Please welcome John to the team at our next Bobcat Club event. ----------------------Until our next letter, see you in the Sac-N-Pac room this Saturday or in the stands at volleyball and soccer! With Bobcat Pride, Chris Park

Track and Field Stadium

Texas State completed construction on its new Track and Field Stadium, located behind Bobcat Stadium, this past August. The scope of work includes a regulation NCAA track with locations for high jump, pole vault, triple jump, and steeple race. The new facility also includes locations for field events including discus, shot put, javelin and hammer throw. The complex can accommodate seating for 1,000, and provides restrooms, a small concession area, and storage for track equipment. Former Oklahoma associate head women’s coach Dana Boone has been named the new Texas State track and field head coach. She brings with her 20 years of experience from top programs such as Oklahoma, LSU, Texas, Tulane, Middle Tennessee and South Carolina. She has added four assistants to help her guide the program. Joining Coach Boone’s staff is Bryan Jackson (distance), Giles McDonnell (sprints/hurdles), Keith Herston (jumps/multis) and Greg Watson (throws). Coach Boone and her team are ready to get to work in their new stadium. It should be an exciting 2011-2012 for Bobcat Track and Field.

Campus Growth and Construction Texas State is currently undergoing construction on a new 189,448 square-foot residence hall, currently being referred to as the North Campus Housing Complex. It will be comprised of 612 beds and will be centrally located near the LBJ Student Center. Occupancy is scheduled for new residents in the fall of 2012. Each floor will feature study and lounge spaces. A two-story community building will provide a central entrance point and will offer a 24-hour reception desk, meeting rooms and study lounges, as well as gathering spaces for recreation and social events.

Texas State is also building a new Undergraduate Academic Center (UAC). The UAC, located adjacent to Evans Hall and spanning over Guadalupe Street, is expected to be completed in the fall of 2012. It will house the Personalized Academic and Career Exploration Center (PACE). The PACE Center will provide academic advising, career counseling, and mentoring programs for freshmen.

Originally designed with four suites, Bobcat Ballpark will feature a fifth suite for the 2012 season after a caboose was installed down the right-field line at the home of the Texas State baseball team. The caboose made its way to San Marcos from California. Renovations to the caboose are currently being planned, and will include a fresh coat of maroon and gold paint, couches, a kitchenette, a restroom, flat screen TVs and decks both in front of and on top of the caboose.

Spotlight On

The Bobcat Club recently caught up with Amber Calhoun to get some insight into the 2011 Texas State Volleyball team. Amber is a senior Middle Blocker and captain from Houston.

What are your goals individually and for the team this year? Personally, I have set a goal for myself to finish highly ranked in the overall Conference stats for both hitting percentage as well as blocking percentage. In the past, these have been my strengths. As for the team, my goal and expectation is for us to win the Conference outright as well as going on to win the Conference tournament and advancing to the NCAA tournament. What is your most memorable moment in your time playing for the Bobcats? Throughout my three years here, there have been countless memorable moments, but one that I will never forget is my sophomore year when our team won the Conference tournament and was able to proceed to the NCAA tournament. Those moments after the final match of the tournament were amazing as we all realized all of our hard work paid off and we achieved our goal of being the best in the Southland Conference and we were going to get to advance to a National level of competition. How does it feel to be a senior captain on the team? To be honest, it’s weird to think about! I don’t think a day has passed this semester that I haven’t made a comment about how it’s crazy to think it’s my senior year. These three years have really gone by so fast that I can’t believe it’s finally here. But being a captain for this team is such a privilege, we have a great group of girls so they make it easy to be their leader. I enjoy the challenges that being a leader of the team brings. It’s difficult, but it also makes me feel important, and who wouldn’t want that!

Amber Calhoun What do you like to do in your spare time? My spare time usually consists of playing with my dog, Pretty. Pretty is a pit-bull/lab mix who I got last summer and is very much mama’s girl! Whenever I’m not in class or in volleyball she is usually with me or I am at home playing with her because she literally follows me around everywhere. Other than playing with my sweet puppy, I’m hanging out with my teammates who are also my best friends off of the court. What is something that we don’t know about Coach Chisum? Even though Coach Chisum HATES texting, she’s technologically savvy enough that she has her own iPad that she is always on, especially when we travel. You always see her playing games or watching movies on it! So don’t let her fool you, she’s up to date with things! Describe yourself in 3 words. Competitive, easy-going, driven What’s in store for you in the future, after you are done playing for the Bobcats? Who knows! I still have some time left in school so my options are still very much open about where I will end up after graduating. I would love to stay in the San Marcos area and I for sure see myself still being involved with volleyball. After years of playing, I am still not burnt out on volleyball and can’t imagine myself having a job that won’t include it. But I am keeping an open mind as to where I end up after school!

Volleyball Update Longtime head coach Karen Chisum will lead the Texas State volleyball team into the program’s 45th season in 2011. The sixth winningest active NCAA Division I head coach, Chisum begins her 32nd season with a roster that features eight returning letterwinners, including three starters, along with nine Bobcat newcomers. Also joining Chisum in leading the Bobcats will be associate head coach Tracy Smith, who will begin her 10th season with Texas State, and assistant coach Sean Huiet, who will begin his sixth season. The Bobcats will look to improve upon a 2010 season in which the team compiled a 19-12 record to finish second in the Southland Conference West Division and earn a third seed in the SLC Tournament. The postseason appearance was the eighth consecutive for Texas State, which has averaged more than 21 wins per season over the past four years. The 2011 season will be the final one in the Southland Conference for Texas State which will transition to the Western Athletic Conference beginning in 2012, giving the Bobcats one more opportunity to add to their five Southland Conference regular season championships and six SLC Tournament titles. “I’m excited about the upcoming season and, of course, have mixed feelings about our last one in the Southland Conference,” Chisum said. “I have many great friends and colleagues in this conference but am very anxious for our new adventures in the WAC! Our goal is to make this a very memorable season in this conference.”

The Bobcats are 9-5 on the season after winning the North Texas tournament in Denton this weekend. Amber Calhoun was named the MVP of the tournament. Melissa Toth, Amber Calhoun and Amari Deardoff lead the team in kilss with 99, 99 and 97 respectively. Laura Whalen leads the team in digs with 134. As a team, Texas State leads the Southland Conference in hitting percentage and kills and is second in the SLC in assists. The Bobcats will begin conference play against UT - San Antonio on September 22 at 6:30 in Strahan Coliseum.

Soccer Update The Texas State soccer team had six players named to the All-Southland Conference Preseason Team, as announced by the conference office. Kelsey Bernard was the Bobcats’ lone first team member, while five players were named to the second team. Texas State’s six total players on the team was the most in the conference. On the second team for the Bobcats were forwards Erica Michaud and Serena Hines, defenders Emma Staley and Alissa Scott and goalkeeper Lauren Frazier. Bernard is one of two team captains this year, along with junior midfielder Taylor Person. Last season she earned Second-Team All-Conference honors following her season in which she was second on the team in points with three goals and four assists, for 10 points. Michaud is the Bobcats’ leading active scorer with 44 career points through her first three seasons. Hines has five goals through her first two years as a Bobcat, for 10 total points. Sophomore Forward Gabbi Cottee As a team the Bobcats placed third in both the presearson coaches’ poll along with the SID poll. Texas State totaled 65 points, including one first place vote to tie for third with UTSA in the coaches’ poll, while earning 61 points to place solo third in the SID poll. Texas State Head Soccer Coach Kat Conner hired two new assistant coaches, Link Scoggins and Jason Wichman, for the 2011 season. Wichman, who comes to Texas State from Drake University, will primarily work with the Bobcat goalkeepers. Scoggins has been at Cistercian Prep in Irving, Texas the last three years. He has also coached on a variety of club teams. Earlier in his career he was with Hardin Simmons where he finished his playing eligibility in 2005 before staying on as an assistant coach during the 2006 season. The Cowboys won the American Southwest Conference Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament both seasons. The Bobcats are currently 3-4 on the season, but started a 6 game home stand on Friday with an overtime win against Louisiana Tech. That record should be improving quickly with the support of the Bobcat home crowd. Sydney Curry and Serena Hines are leading the team with two goals each. Kendell Webber, Erica Michaud, Taylor Kelley and Kelsey Bernard are right behind hem with one goal a piece. Goalie Lauren Frazier has 14 saves and two shutouts on the year so far.

Football Update San Marcos, Texas - The Texas State football team took advantage of a strong rushing attack and ran for three touchdowns in the second half to defeat Tarleton State 38-28. The win was in front of a record setting crowd on Saturday night at Bobcat Stadium in Dennis Franchione’s first home game since he returned as head coach last January. The game began as a duel between a pair of kickers as Tarleton State’s Jerry Owens opened the game with a 44-yard field goal before Texas State’s Will Johnson came right back to break a school record with a 53-yard field goal to tie the score at 3-3 with 9:23 left to play in the first quarter. Johnson’s field goal was one-yard longer than the previous school record that was held by Andrew Ireland and Jason Howee. After Owens kicked a 40-yard field goal to give the Texans a 6-3 lead, Texas State went ahead for the first time in the game when redshirt freshman Terrence Franks scored the first touchdown of the game on a seven-yard run. Johnson added the extra point to give the Bobcats a 10-6 advantage with 13:52 left in the first half. Linebacker

In the second half, Tarleton State regained the lead at when a snap sailed over the head of punter Ben Follis in Texas State's end zone and Follis was forced to hit ball out of the back of the end zone for a safety. After the Texans tied the score again, on a 37-yard TD pass,Texas State scored 17 straight points to go up for good. Tim Hawkins changed the momentum of the game when he ran for a 54-yard touchdown and Franks scored his final TD on a 31 yard gallop. In between the two touchdown runs, Johnson added a 37-yard field goal. Franks' third TD run of the night gave the Bobcats a 38-21 lead with 6:48 left to play. The Texans tacked on their final points in the game when Evan Robertson scored a touchdown on a two-yard run. The game was played in front of a crowd of 15,800 which is the largest crowd for a season opening game at Texas State and the third-largest crowd in school history. It marked the largest crowd at Bobcat Stadium since Nov. 6, 1982 when 16,000 fans watched the Bobcats play against Angelo State. “The crowd was awesome tonight and they were really into the game,” added Franchione. “Our players felt the energy from the fans, students and the band. We appreciated them being here tonight. It meant a lot to the players and it meant a lot to me. For the process through which we are going with the move to the WAC, it is going to take the whole village.” The victory was the first win of the season for the Bobcats, who improved to 1-2 this season. Texas State will travel to Nacogdoches, Texas next Saturday and play Stephen F. Austin in a game that kicks off at 6:00 p.m.

Q&A with Will Johnson Freshman punter/kicker Will Johnson talked with TXStateBobcats.com for the second installment of a weekly Q&A with student-athletes from every sport. Johnson has kicked a field goal to help Texas State score first in each of the Bobcats last two games. It's a good start for a true freshman with a long career ahead. As an incoming freshman this year, what were your reasons for choosing to play for the Texas State Football Team? I chose Texas State because I wanted to be close to my family, since I am from Bryan. I like to be able to see them regularly. Being a true freshman and no other kickers on the roster..... Does that put any extra pressure on you? Yes, but I try not to think a lot about the pressures and more about what I need to do for the team. Rumor has it you can drill a field goal from 50 maybe 60 yards, how true is that? I did kick a field goal of 58 yards during one of the practices. I have been able to kick many 50 to 60 yard field goals in the past, but sometimes I would be in an indoor gym where there isn't any wind. Your field goal against Texas Tech looked easy. How much of a relief was it to get your first college field goal behind you? It was a big relief and really exciting. I was happy to see and have the support of my family. It was also my dad's birthday that day. What do you currently have playing in your iPod/mp3 player? pretty

I like listening to country and some rap. I like much all types of music though. What are your hopes or expectations for entering the WAC next year? I have good expectations for the WAC. I think we will be ready for the new challenge.

Two Former Bobcats Make MLB Debut Former Texas State baseball players, Paul Goldschmidt and Thomas Field both made their major league debut this year. Goldschmidt got the start at 1st base for the Diamondbacks on August 1st and singled in his first at bat. Field made his debut on September 12th for the Rockies and turned two double plays while starting at shortstop. Goldschmidt spent the majority of the season playing for Arizona's Double-A affiliate (Mobile Bay Bears). The power-hitting first baseman proved himself in the minors this season, leading the entire minor leagues with 30 home runs and 94 RBIs while also sporting a .306 batting average and .435 on-base percentage. While at Texas State, Goldschmidt set career records for home runs (36), doubles (45), walks (110) and RBIs (369) during his three-year career. He also left San Marcos holding the team's single-season home runs record (18), which was eclipsed this past season by Casey Kalenkosky (21), along with the record for RBIs (88) and doubles (21). He was named a Louisville Slugger All-America Second Team selection and American Baseball Coaches Association AllAmerica Third Team selection after the 2009 season in which he led the Bobcats to a team record 41 wins and berth in the NCAA Regionals. Prior to his call-up, Field played 134 games for the Rockies Double-A affiliate in Tulsa, playing both second base and shortstop. A 24th round selection by the Rockies in 2008, Field hit .271 in 472 at-bats with 17 home runs, 77 runs scored, 61 RBIs and nine stolen bases in Tulsa this season.

Goldschmidt at first for the Diamondbacks

Field played three seasons in San Marcos from 2006-2008 and still appears in several categories of the Texas State record book. He is third in career triples (10), fourth in runs scored (168) and doubles (36), sixth in hits (190) and stolen bases (39), and 12th in home runs (17). Three former Bobcats are currently on MLB rosters with Field and Goldschmidt joining 12-year veteran pitcher Scott Linebrink of the Atlanta Braves. Goldschmidt and Field become the fifth and sixth players from Texas State to make it to the big leagues, joining pitchers Scott Linebrink, Jeremy Fikac, William Brunson and Joe Vance. Goldschmidt is currently batting .250 with 7 home runs and 21 RBI’s in 38 games as the primary 1st baseman for the Diamondbacks. Field is batting .231 in limited action since his September call-up to the big leagues.
