Letter From The Desk of Matt Peters Fellow Bobcats, The start of 2013 provides the opportunity to reflect on the athletic department’s accomplishments during 2012, of which there were many! The Bobcat Club had a record year in 2012 raising over $760,000 through the support of over 1200 donors. This is an increase of almost 400% toward the student-athlete scholarship fund since 2009. Your gift truly makes a difference in the lives of these student-athletes. I want to personally thank you for helping to make 2012 the most successful year in the history of the Bobcat Club. Last year also saw the unveiling of our new track and field stadium and a renovated Bobcat Stadium doubling its capacity. We packed over 33,000 people in to Bobcat Stadium in our football home opener and played our first season in the Football Bowl Subdivision. We broke ground on a new golf practice facility at Plum Creek Golf Course which is now the home course for the men’s and women’s golf teams. And most importantly, 57 student-athletes earned their diplomas from Texas State. None of these milestones would have been possible without your support. Looking forward, our baseball, softball, and track teams are preparing for their upcoming seasons which will be getting underway in February. Bobcat Bonanza will take place March 23rd. And in August, the Texas State athletic department will begin competing in the Sunbelt Conference. 2013 promises to be another exciting year in Bobcat Athletics! Thanks again for your continued support and for helping to make 2012 a historic year for Texas State athletics. Best Regards and Go Bobcats!

Fall 2012 Sports Recap It is no longer “WAC- We Are Coming,” but WE ARE HERE! Texas State fall sports created history during our first season in the Western Athletic Conference. From football to volleyball to soccer to golf to cross country, Texas State had some historic victories this fall.

Football began their season with a monumental victory over the University of Houston as they stunned the Cougars with a 30-13 victory at Robertson Stadium in Houston. It was the first time the Bobcats had beaten an FBS team since 2000 when they defeated Louisiana Monroe. Football completed their season with a 66-28 victory over New Mexico State and a 4-8 overall record. Volleyball finished their season with an overall record of 14-16 with a conference record of 9-10 with victories over WAC opponents San Jose, Seattle University, UTA, La Tech, UTSA, and New Mexico. One match that stands out is the Bobcat’s sweep against Seattle U, which tallied 750 career wins for head coach Karen Chisum, the sixth winningest active head coach in NCAA Division I.

Charles Austin Charles Austin to be Inducted in USATF Hall of Fame Former Texas State high jumper Charles Austin has been selected as one of six individuals to be inducted into the USA Track & Field Hall of Fame as part of the 2012 class. The group will be inducted into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame on Saturday, December 1, at the Jesse Owens Hall of Fame Banquet as part of the 2012 USATF Annual Meeting in Daytona Beach, Fla. Austin’s career began as a high school athlete who fell short of qualifying for the Texas High School State Championships. It finished with an Olympic gold medal, world championship and American record. Austin became a dominant high jumper in the latter part of the 1990s by winning six consecutive USA Outdoor championships from 1995-2000. His proudest moment came when he won the gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games, the last time a member of Team USA has done so. His career was also one of longevity. When he won his last USA Indoor championship in 2003, it was 12 years after his first world title and the year he set the American record (2.40m/7-10.5). Austin’s career also included World Indoor gold, a World Cup title, an Olympic record and a total of nine combined USA Indoor and Outdoor titles. Austin, who competed at Texas State until 1990, was an NCAA champion in the 1990 outdoor season, clearing 7-7 ¾ to earn the title. During his time with the Bobcats, he qualified for four NCAA Championships and still holds the school record for both indoor and outdoor high jump.

Where Are They Now? David Dickey is a Southwest Texas Alumni as well as an athletic alumni for Bobcat Golf. In recent years, David has become a Bobcat Club member in efforts to give back to his University. We sat down with David to catch up on his career since graduation and how he stays involved with Bobcat Athletics.

Tell us about your history with Texas State.

I went SWT in 1973 and graduated in 1977 with BBA with a concentration in management. I transferred from Laredo Junior college and played on the golf team in ’73 – ’74. I also joined Theta XI fraternity much to the chagrin of the golf coach. I was elected President in 1976. After I stopped playing on the golf team I worked many jobs including Aquarena Springs hotel and various other jobs. I also owned a carpet and an apartment cleaning company in ’75 & ’76. The apartment cleaning was quite an experience since we had to clean apartments that were vacated by the students at the end of the semester. That could be nasty! My son graduated from Texas State in 2008, and my Dad also went to Southwest Texas State for a year about the time of the great depression.

What has been your career path since leaving Texas State?

After graduation, I went to work for Solar-X Corporation, a manufacturer of window films. I was the branch manager of the Houston operation. In 1980 my original boss and I bought the branch office from Solar-X. In February of 1981, we started Enpro Distributing. We distributed window films in a 16 state region and grew the company from myself as the sole employee to 30 people with branch offices in Houston, DFW and Charlotte, N.C. We sold our distribution business this January and have retained our contracting, Retail Services division and our distribution of window tinting products and software exclusively to new car dealers.

How have you stayed involved with Texas State and athletics since graduating?

I was out of touch for about twenty years building our business but started to become a little active when I was invited to lunch with about 6 to 8 other alumni and the great Jim Wacker who was then the Athletic Director. He showed us a rendering of a new football stadium that Texas State wanted build and wanted to be active Alumni. That had to be about 11 to 12 years ago. About 5 years ago, because of Travis Comer, I started becoming more active by joining the Bobcat Club and buying season tickets for football and following the golf team.

Where Are They Now Cont’d What is your favorite memory from being a Bobcat athlete?

That is a tough one. We didn’t have a very good team at the time and I didn’t play very well as Bobcat golfer, but qualified for all the conference tournaments. However, the memory that stands out was signing to play with the Bobcats and living in the athletic dorm with some track athletes who convinced me to join the fraternity. We had another golf team member who joined the fraternity the same time I did and we have stayed in touch and are still close friends to this day. The same goes to my other fraternity brothers and a lot of us still get together and go to football games, especially homecoming.

How have things changed since your time in San Marcos?

The changes have been remarkable! There were only about 14,000 students when I was there and we were division II NAIA school. The McCoy College of business is very impressive. Our business classes used to be in one small building. The football stadium is unbelievable along with the baseball stadium, the new golf practice facility and all the other upgraded and improvements that have occurred. It was really just a matter of time that Texas State would grow into what it is today. Much of that is attributed to Denise Trauth’s leadership.

What has being a Texas State Bobcat meant to you?

It means that I can say with pride, that this is the University from which I graduated. Where students who graduate will have the tools to become successful and be leaders in their chosen fields of endeavor.

Basketball Behind the Scenes With Basketball season fully underway, the Bobcat Club sat down with men’s basketball head coach Doug Davalos and women’s head coach Zenarae Antoine to get their thoughts on the season. Men’s basketball ended their 2012 season with an overall record of 13-17 and were one game shy of making it to the SLC Tournament for the fourth straight year, but suffered a two-point loss to Sam Houston State in the regular season finale. Texas State capped its season with the 24th best scoring offense in the nation at 76.4 points per game and 26th in three-point field goals per game (8.2). Being in a new conference, what are going to be some differences that you are anticipating?

The unfamiliarity with many of the teams in the WAC (style of play, players, arenas) will be an adjustment. There will be longer trips, of course, and more plane trips and less bus rides. We will also have a different officials chapter.

Do you have a specific game this season you are most looking forward to? Tell us about your off season training in preparation for season.

We were fortunate to have some extra offseason conditioning this year. Due to NCAA legislation, we were able to work with our players 2 hours a week during the summer. We also went on a foreign tour to Costa Rica in August, which allowed us 10 full practices prior to departure. Include this with our normal fall preseason and we were much further along (conditioning and execution) for our 1st official practice on October 12th.

What should Bobcat fans be most excited about with your current season?

This is a very talented an athletic team. Our newcomers, as a whole, make up the best recruiting class we have assembled. Couple this with the experienced players we have back, and we have a reason for optimism. This is our deepest team to date, which will improve the day to day competition in the program.

12

Bobcat club e-magazine

Our schedule is very tough. We play Texas (Big 12), Northwestern (Big 10), Utah (Pac 12), SMU (Conference USA), Fordham (Atlantic 10) and Oral Roberts. Our new WAC opponents including regular NCAA participants New Mexico State and Utah State will be the toughest conference schedule for men’s basketball in program history. Every game is a challenge.

Basketball Behind the Scenes Last year, the Texas State women’s basketball team experienced a resurgence in their 2011-12 season. In head coach Zenarae Antoine’s first year, the Bobcats (17-14) almost doubled their wins from the previous year, reached the Southland Conference Tournament for the first time in four years, and recorded their first SLC Tournament win since 2003. Being in a new conference, what are going to be some differences that you are anticipating?

I think size is going to be a huge difference. Looking at the Western Athletic Conference I feel that size is going to have an impact on the game quite a bit. It won’t be as up and down of a conference as the previous conference, but transitioning from that conference to the next conference, that conference is kind of more of an up and down but we’re going to stick to who we are regardless and just hope they can defend us.

With losing and gaining new players every season, do you have a way you encourage and develop team chemistry?

We don’t have necessarily a buddy system, but I spend a lot of time individually with each one of our girls as well as my staff is divided up academically to where you have a one on one meeting with a coach every single week. And we do foster an environment of a lot of family fun because we do a lot of events at my house, just the team, just the scout guys, and it doesn’t revolve around recruiting. We play games, and just eat and break bread, and I think that helps out quite a bit as well. When we’re on the road we’ll do some fun things as well, just so they understand we are family and that we truly care outside of basketball.

What should Bobcat fans be most excited about with your current season?

I think what they’ll like is that there will be fresh faces, so there will be different people for each fan to kind of identify with. In addition to that, it’s my hope that our style of play stays somewhat similar where it’s pretty high powered offensive team yet knowing we’ve got to get better defensively as well.

Which player(s) on your team are you looking to for leadership this season?

I think you’re naturally going to say the two young women that were all conference for us but really and truly the leader who has emerged over the past year for us has been Kaylan Martin. She’s not necessarily a silent leader because not only does she work hard but she’s also been more and more vocal which is something we’ve needed. You know I would say definitely anyone on the team would be able to tell you that Kaylan Martin is a leader for this team both on and off the court, receiving academic awards as well I think this young woman is deserving of some basketball awards here soon.

Soccer Season Recap The 2012 season was a list of new experiences for the Texas State soccer team. With new players at key positions, the Bobcats became better each week making their way to the conference tournament semi-finals. Texas State entered the 2012 season in a new league, the Western Athletic Conference, with five new starters, after having to replace Southland Conference Tournament MVP Lauren Frazier, who was the starting goalkeeper in 2011. Frazier joined the Bobcat coaching staff following the championship season. Natalie Gardini and Catlyn Rinehart battled for playing time in the preseason, before Gardini won the job during the year, going 7-10-1 with four shutouts. In the midfield, Taylor Person moved back to center midfielder after playing at right outside defender the previous year, and teamed with freshman Landry Lowe to help replace graduates Kelsey Bernard and Kendell Webber. The two played in all but one game during the year. Person, who graduated following the 2012 campaign, scored three goals, fourth on the team in that category. Up top, the Bobcats welcomed in a pair of new forwards in freshman Lynsey Curry and transfer Tori Hale. Curry became the third member of her family to play under Kat Conner, along with sisters Britney and current midfielder Sydney. Lynsey earned WAC Freshman of the Year honors after tallying five goals and adding two assists. Her most memorable goal came against Idaho in the first round of the WAC Tournament, scoring in overtime to break the 1-1 tie. Hale, a transfer from TCU, led the team in scoring on the year with five goals and six assists for 16 points. Against Texas Southern, she had a breakout game with two goals and two assists for six points. In the first round game against Idaho she was responsible for many scoring opportunities, finishing the game with five shots.

14

Bobcat club e-magazine

Texas State reached the first round game against Idaho by virtue of a thriller in the regular season finale against UTSA. Junior midfielder Kelsie Townsend scored her first goal of the season as time was winding down in double overtime, to break a scoreless tie and give the Bobcats a 1-0 win in San Antonio. She followed it up with a goal just before halftime, in the team’s next game against Idaho to tie the game at 1-1. The Bobcats finished the year by reaching the semifinals of its conference tournament for the fifth consecutive year. Texas State will again change conferences next year, going from the WAC to the Sun Belt, marking the third conference in as many years. After having to go through one of its most challenging seasons to date in terms of change, the Bobcats will be ready to take on any challenge that comes their way in 2013.

Spotlight On The Bobcat Club caught up with Taylor Person to talk about the 2012 Soccer season and their first year in the WAC. Taylor just completed her senior season as a defender for the Bobcats and is a native to Georgetown, TX.

Taylor Person What are you majoring in and what do you intend to do after you graduate? I’m majoring in Biology with a minor in Chemistry and I plan on going to nursing school after I graduate. What is the best or worst injury you’ve endured while playing soccer? Well the worst would probably be when I got kicked in the face and broke my nose….but the most interesting was when we were in Maryland to play Navy last year and I got appendicitis and the team flew home while I stayed and had surgery.

What were some differences this year being in a new conference? The main difference, other than traveling further, was just facing new opponents. Since I was in the Southland my first three years, we become somewhat comfortable with the competition and even sometimes just went through the motions. Being in a new conference, we didn’t know what to expect so each game seemed new and exciting and it kept us on our toes more. With all of the new competition, what was your favorite place to travel to? Out of all the places we traveled to this year, my favorite would have to be San Jose. My sister just moved out there so it was nice to get to see her and experience their great weather. Denver and Utah State were both gorgeous places with beautiful scenery, but being able to see my sister made San Jose better for me. How did you and your teammates stay entertained with a busy travel schedule? We spend a lot of time doing homework and helping each other study. But we also spend a lot of time hanging out in each others hotel rooms and watching movies together on the plane rides. Does Coach Kat Conner have a favorite saying? Coach Conner has several phrases and motions that are used repeatedly. I would say the one that gets to us the most would be this thing she does where she acts like she’s licking her fingers and makes this smacking noise with her mouth, which she uses to show that we should be “hungry” or “salivating” for the ball. It kind of grosses us out.

Describe yourself in 15 words or less. Faithful, loyal, friendly, sarcastic, loving, smart, hard working, stubborn, fun, and outgoing. As a senior, is there one game from your career that stands out as most memorable? There are several memorable moments from my career. The first that comes to mind would have to be starting my first game as a freshman, then there’s also when we beat SFA to win Southland Conference tournament after they had an undefeated season, and then beating UTSA this season which caused them to not go to the conference tournament. What helped you decide to come to Texas State for soccer four years ago? I wanted to go somewhere where it was Division I but here I wouldn’t be redshirted my freshman year and I had a fair chance to earn playing time. I also wanted somewhere decently close to home without being too close. Once I visited Texas State, I fell in love with the beautiful campus with the river and the Hill Country and just everything about San Marcos. And from there I was sold. What has receiving an athletic scholarship here at Texas State meant to you and your educational pursuits? Receiving an athletic scholarship here has really been a blessing in my life. My parents started a Texas Tomorrow Fund when I was young, which would have paid for my four years of school but I would have needed loans to go to nursing school. Receiving athletic scholarship has allowed me to save my Texas Tomorrow Fund to be put towards nursing school so that I can graduate as free from debt as possible.
