The Legacy Of John Marrant

T

he legacy of John Marrant lies in his published writings. Marrant contributed to religion, literature, and the progress of African Americans in the midst of slavery. Born June 15, 1755 in the colony of New York, Marrant eventually traveled to the South with his mother, after his father’s death in 1759. The family settled in Charleston, South Carolina, after stays in St. Augustine, Florida and in Georgia. Marrant was able to read and to spell by the age of eleven. Thereafter Marrant received an education in the arts; he learned to play the French horn and violin in eighteen months. Like many African American men at the time, he entertained white gentry at balls and other events. As Julien-Joseph Virey noted in his eighteenth-century work, Natural History of the Negro Species Particularly , the sensual and artistic human characteristics were considered to be a temperament divinely bestowed to Africa and its descendants; hence African Americans’ musical talent was respected in spite of the fact that musicians themselves were denied basic human rights. In spite of his artistic skills, Marrant was required to be an apprentice in order to learn a pragmatic trade—carpentry. Eventually he returned to his pursuit of music, which indirectly led to his fame. Marrant had an extraordinary conversion at the age of thirteen. While playing a prank on the renowned evangelist George Whitefield, Marrant was stopped by the words of the preacher and converted to Christianity. Persecuted by his own family, Marrant sought comfort with a Cherokee tribe. Marrant remained with the tribe for some time before returning to Charles-

ton in 1772 to teach slaves. He joined the navy late in 1776. After serving Britain for six years, he was injured in the Dutch Anglo War and discharged in 1782. The years after that were spent in ministerial training under the Huntington Methodist Connexion, which was sponsored by Selina Hastings, who was one of the benefactors of Phyllis Wheatley. In 1785 he was ordained a minister and traveled to Nova Scotia to minister to over three thousand African American refugees who fled slavery by fighting in the war. Marrant’s marital status remains unclear. The New York City Inspection Roll of Negroes in 1783 identifies Marrant as the owner of Melia Marrant and her two children. Devona Mallory, in African American Lives , argues that there is no reason to believe that the woman and children were not Marrant’s family. However, Joanna Brooks and John Saillant, in Face Zion Forward , suggest that it is possible that Marrant owned slaves since he needed to avoid offending his Huntington Methodist Connexion. Chronology 1755 Born in the colony of New York on June 15 1759 Father dies; mother moves family to Florida and Georgia before settling in Charleston, South Carolina 1768 Converts to Christianity at the age of thirteen 1772 Runs a church school in South Carolina 1776 Serves the British Navy at the start of the Revolutionary War 1782 Discharged from military 1785 Ordained a minister; travels to Nova Scotia to

John Marrant, from August the 18th, 1785, to the 16th of March, 1790 1791 Dies in Islington, London, England Literary Influence In 1785 Marrant published A Narrative of the Lord’s Wonderful Dealings with John Marrant, A Black with the assistance of Reverend William Aldridge, who transcribed it. It has been argued by some critics that Marrant could not write at this time. Presumably Marrant had learned to write before he published his journal five years later, entitled A Journal of the Rev. John Marrant, from August the 18th, 1785, to the 16th of March, 1790 .In his review of Marrant’s writings in American Writers before 1800 , John C. Shields notes that the Journal is written in a more conservative tone than the Narrative . This difference may substantiate the idea that the first work was transcribed by someone else. Arthur P. Davis, in Dictionary of American Negro Biography , also notes differences in the tone of the two works. He argues that the Narrative is sensationalized with the incredible accounts of divine intervention in Marrant’s life. The Journal , in Davis’ opinion, is monotonous. Perhaps Henry Louis Gates Jr. articulates it best in The Signifying Monkey when he notes that many of the early African

American narratives were dictated to white editors, who possibly revised them in some ways. In an article in African American Review , Cedrick May contends that Marrant’s work is based on a theology rooted in black religion, which is founded on tradition and ambitious social change. Marrant’s work is also an Indian captivity narrative; it was one of the top three Indian captivity narratives in circulation during the eighteenth century. Antislavery Contributions In spite of Marrant’s popularity and influence as an African American writer, some critics still hold that Mar-rant failed to communicate much on behalf of his race. In his A Sermon Preached on the 24th Day of June 1789 … at the Request of the Right Worshipful the Grand Master Prince Hall, and the Rest of the Brethren of the African Lodge of the Honorable Society of Free and Accepted Masons in Boston , Marrant focused the text on love and virtue against evil. In relation to race, he does clearly note that blacks have a place of honor as the descendents of Cush, who were responsible for the creation of some of the ancient wonders and mathematics. Marrant died in Islington, London, England in 1791. As Shields aptly argues, Marrant’s life modeled liberty in mind, body and soul, which he desired for all humankind regardless of color; this desire for universal freedom only heightened his example for eighteenth century African Americans who were denied these liberties and thought to be less than human. Marrant was a man who stood in three worlds without limitations: the literary world, the religious world, and the world of progress for African Americans. http://enc yclope dia.jrank.org/articles/pages/4365/Marrant-John-1755-1791.html”>Marrant, John(1755–1791) - Writer, minister, Chronology, Literary Influence, Antislavery Contributions

S

ince the early 1980s, Fred Hammond has been a well regarded figure on the Contemporary Christian music scene, first with his group Commissioned and later as a solo artist with his own touring choir, Radical for Christ. After more than 20 years in the music business, however, Hammond has become almost as well known for his work as a Christian-music entrepreneur. He has worked on over 80 albums since establishing his own production company, Face to Face, in 1992. He has also taken his music to thousands of fans by keeping up a busy touring schedule. His own album releases have been accompanied by extensive promotional work to encourage urban radio stations to begin playing Contemporary Christian music. As Hammond told Billboard about his efforts to broaden his audience, “People in the AfricanAmerican church have this conception of praise and worship music as just being white music. So we decided that I would cover all the tunes they would normally do and remix them for the urban setting.”

B

orn in Detroit around 1961, Hammond grew up in a neighborhood where two of the dominant forces were music and religion. Raised in a churchgoing family, Hammond also studied the bass guitar; by the age of 17, he had started to pursue a career in music by playing and singing in his family’s church on a regular basis. Hammond’s adolescent years, however, were troubled as he struggled to find some direction in his life. “I would steal from the store down the street, then go to church,” he admitted to American Visions.”But my mother kept us connected to the church, and that gave us a sense of God.” He added, “I was another young African American walking around with no clue.” After leaving high school, Hammond joined the Army, but the experience did not turn into a career for the budding musician. After his stint in the Army, Hammond was inspired by the efforts of his friends in the Winan family to start recording and releasing their own music under the group name the Testimonials in the late 1970s. “We all lived together in the neighborhood, we all did music, we all did home recordings with cheesy albums that had covers drawn by our cousins,” Hammond later told American Visions. “But the Testimonials had taken it to a whole new level.” Impressed by the Winans’ professional approach to

The group had been my comfort zone, but I just felt like we released a series of albums in the 1980s with had peaked, and vision-wise we were growing a sound and style that differed little from the apart. It was like six people driving a car with contemporary sounds of urban-oriented music, only one steering wheel.” He also used his aside from its Christian-themed lyrics. As he creative vision to branch out as a producer with discussed his musical influences in an Ebony the opening of his own Face to Face production interview, “I’m from the old school. I’ve got a studios in the Detroit suburb of Southfield, bit of [Edwin] Hawkins and the Winans and Michigan, in 1992. Hammond hoped his actions would inspire others to serve the children of their own communities. As he told Ebony, “I wanted to be a role model, to help out. We need organizations like the Big Brothers and Big Sisters, but I wanted to go one step further. I wanted to be a father, where my son can see me every day and be right here with me.” In the 1990s Hammond released a string of successful albums with his backing choir, Radical for Christ. The 12-to-15-member group also accompanied him on numerous Online website, “I thought Commissioned tours, including the 1997 “Tour of Life” series, was my own group because I started it.... Up And Coming Artist Of Th e Month

Voices Of Glory

Owe Success To God...

Confined in the small sanctuary of Winners church, the harmony of Voices of Glory reverberated off the walls and with no exit the melody exploded. The synchronization of their voices is something they believe was ordained and destined by God. Voices Of Glory is comprised of Iris Moore, Maryanne Pinkey-O’Neal, and Carol Stephens, and started blending songs into one accord in 2005. “I always like to sing” Stephens said. “In 2001 the Lord started giving me praise and worship songs.” Stephens’ husband, Henry Stephens, said one morning his wife said to him, “God gave me some songs.” He dismissed her machinations. Stephens continued writing, finally giving the songs to her husband who’ d onece been immersed in the music industry. He was impressed and passed the songs along to a friend who was still in the music business and was given the thumbs up. For a time, Stephens’ songs went to other artists while she remained in the background. Slowly, her songs emerged with her melody and voice. The ladies formed a bond through one song. Moore and Stephens knew each other because they attended the same church. The song “Winner In Me” brought Pinkey-O’Neal to the group. Henry Stephens, who’ d left the

music industry behind more than 10 years prior, found himself back at home in the studio producing. He said both his wife and Moore, tried their voices at Winner In Me, but the sound was off. A mutual acquaintance of Henry Stephens and Pinkey-O’Neal suggested her for the song. Henry Stephens said he couldn’t describe or identify the sound that was missing in the song, but “I just knew when I heard it, I would know it” In one phone conversation Pinkey-O’Neal decided she’ d add her voice to the song and when Henry Stephens heard her, he knew he’ d found the voice. “She started singing and we were like “that’s it” “Stephens said. “She brought soul to the song” The trio’s grouping was only supposed to last through December 2005, when they perform at at benefit concert, but according to them, God had other plans. “Our relationship blossomed,” Pinkey-O’Neal said. “After the concert we recognized that God really had a hand in this.” Almost 4 years after Voices Of Glory was solidified, the group is featured on a compilation CD, dubbed “The Family Gospel Project” Three of groups seven songs have charted in Gospel USA Magazines top 30 new gospel songs from independent labels. One of their songs charted in the top 10 with “Dont Worry About A Thang” peaking at the ninth spot, which “Winner in Me” also held late last year. Ask them about their success, and the answers vary. Stephens was skeptical, Moore knew this is where she was meant to be and Pinkey-O’Neal was supposed to be a solo artist Pinkey-O’Neal said when she signed on she made it clear. “I’m a solo artist.” She said God spoke to her spirit. “I have something inside of me that I have to get out that God gave me to give to the world.” Pinkey-O’Neal said. She added that the group “Made me change my entire mindset.” Moore said God spoke to her at the age 3 and told her “I was always going to have money and I would sing for him.” Her response. “Whenever you need me Lord, let me know.” Moore added that when she met the ladies, she knew.

e have crossed over the middle of 2013 and we are at the eight month. I hope that whatever you have decided to accomplish is already established or on its way. Romans 1:17 says “For in it God’s righteousness is revealed from faith to faith, “The righteous will live by faith”. But James 2:26 says “Faith with works is dead”. At the beginning of the year I wrote these words to you: “In this year 2013 you should focus on your dreams coming through”. “This is the year that we should intercede more than ever, those obstacles are shaken down and purposes be fulfilled”. Have you interceded and stepped out with courage? “It’s time to get involved if you haven’t started yet “.

t’s time for young men to wake up from sleeping under the influence of drugs; too many sleepers are waking up just to sleep again!! Too many are sleeping in prison and in the grave!! It’s time to wake up to God’s words. God says; “Young man I call upon you because you strong”. God is looking to hand out some blessings. Blessings that people with strength can handle. What about you? Aren’t you longing for something great to happen in your life?

chose to. Psalms 37: 23 - 24 says “A man steps are established by the LORD, and He takes pleasure in his way”. “Though he falls, he will not be overwhelmed, because the LORD holds his hand”. Friends, while we have only four months to go in 2013, God has your interest at heart and he has a purpose for you. So keep pursuing and keep trusting him.

THE PRAYER OF THE RIGHTEOUS Pastor Felicia Bowman

T

he effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16b). I’m sure you’re familiar with this verse of Scripture. You’ve read it often. You may even have it memorized. Yet, this verse seems far from daily reality, especially concerning your prayer life and mine.Maybe you’re discouraged in your prayer life. You pray but your praying doesn’t seem to live up to what James 5:16 says it can be. You don’t feel like your prayers avail much. Yet, God has given this promise to His people. God gives it to us to encourage us and to motivate us to pray. James 5:17-18 says, “Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.”God gives us the promise in James 5:16 and then offers the example in James 5:17-18He provides us with a flesh and blood example of James 5:16. God shows us that we can pray with great power and effectiveness. This kind of praying is not beyond us; God deals with our discouragement and strengthens our faith.

God wants you to know that powerful and effective praying is not out of your reach. Elijah’s success in prayer was not because he had some special power. Elijah had the same nature we have but he prayed powerfully and effectively and we can do the same. What kind of a person do you have to be to pray with power and effectiveness? We must be righteous;we become righteous by believing God’s promise of salvation through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. To come to the Father in effective prayer, you must first come to Jesus by faith (John 14:6).A righteous person prays according to God’s Word. Elijah is referred to as a righteous man; his praying was based on God’s Word. The prayer of a righteous man, the praying that avails much, has its foundation in the Word of God.

W

e must confess our sins. Once we trust Christ, we seek to live a righteous life. We do this by confessing our sin and striving to obey God. We cannot expect God to hear and answer us if we are not living in a way pleasing to Him. (1 John 3:22) We must have confidence in God. The Bible tells us that Elijah prayed fervently and ear-

nestly. Why did he pray this way? He understood that only the Lord God of Israel could do what he asked. Have faith in God and not your prayers. (Heb. 11:6) The prayer of a righteous person can bring both physical and spiritual blessing. Israel needed revival before it needed rain. Elijah prayed first for a return to God and then His blessing. While it is important to pray about the physical/material needs of others, our primary praying should focus on their spiritual need. he righteous person prays that God would be exalted.Elijah’s prayer focused on the exaltation of God and His Word. He desired that the people see and know that God alone is the true God and that His Word is real and powerful. Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Phil 4:6-7)

Overcoming Your “Fears”By Maizie Vassell A

few years ago, after a heavy snow storm, I fell face down on a sidewalk, hitting my nose with tremendous force. I lost about a pint of blood and thought I procured a broken nose. I was taken to the hospital, and after careful examination, I was assured that everything was well. From that day, however, I developed a phobia for the winter and prayed that God would grant us three seasons instead of four!

F

ear is defined as “an emotion induced by a perceived threat which causes entities to quickly pull away from it and hide.” Fear is not something that we were born with. It is acquired through a process known as fear conditioning. According to a study done by NYU, ‘the brain amygdala is known to be critical to the acquisition and expression of fears from personal experience’. For example, a person who was bitten by a snake may re-live the experi-

ence simply by looking at a picture of a snake.

A

ll of us at some point, have experiences of one fear or another – fear of rejection, fear of failure, fear of inadequacy, fear of the future, only to name a few. But no matter our fears, they do not have to control us; we can control them. In other words they can be conquered. Paul reminded Timothy in Timothy 1:7, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

L

et’s examine the great leader Moses and the fears he encountered. In Exodus 3, God called Moses to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt. But Moses feeling a fear of inadequacy responded in verse 11, “Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?” He thought himself too small to do a big job.

A

fear of rejection was also experienced by Moses after God gave him further instructions as to what He (God) is going to do for his people. In Exodus 4:1, Moses said, “But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice for they will say, “The Lord hath

not appeared unto thee.” Again God reassured him through a series of signs and wonders that he will be with him. Finally, in Exodus 4:10 Moses complained, “O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.” Here Moses encountered a fear of failure. He thought his speech would have let him down, but what an eloquent speaker he was!

L

ike Moses, there are times when God called us to do something and instead of obeying him, we find all kinds of excuses. We allowed our fear of inadequacy, rejection and failure to dictate our decision to follow him wherever he leads. These fears are nothing but evidences of mistrust in the God who promised to be with us to the end. God will never ask you to do what he knew you can’t. He will go before you and pave the way. Face your fears head on. Nobody says it will be easy, but you can overcome. Visualize yourself doing the opposite of what the fear is saying to you. Pray consistently for the strength and courage you need and like Esther, say,“If I perish, I perish.”

Th en Am I Strong Carol Ann Ossenfort W

hen does the Bible say we are the strongest? Is it when we’re on a “mountaintop” experience and full of the Holy Spirit, with all things seeming well and right; when we feel respected and good about ourselves and what we’re accomplishing? Is this really when we are the strongest? The Bible says in 2 Corinthians, “When I am weak, then I am strong.” When we know and admit that we of ourselves are powerless, and perhaps even under attack from the evil one, that is precisely the time we need to claim our strength in the Lord, because nothing is stronger than the Christ who works in us, in spite of our weakness and sin. We have only to say and believe that our strongest times are those in which we are not confident in our own selves but in Christ Jesus alone. If we think we’re strong and “up” and in control, that’s the time we’re usually in the pride of our own “self-righteousness” and our own ability to overcome. That’s the “I can and will fix this” syndrome, because we often believe we’re doing God’s Will. We think that’s being strong. But God tells us just the opposite. Those are the times when we’re due for a major fall; some calamity of body or soul that wakes us up out of a false sense of security and brings us back, face to the ground, to repent and acknowledge our sinful, pride-filled nature and our need for complete dependence on the Almighty, Forgiving, and Gracious Power of God. he stronger we think we are in our own strength, the harder we have to fall at the feet of Jesus. The only way

T

we seem to really understand the Truth is when we come repeatedly to the face-down place in our lives. It is when we are in that lowly, humble position, that He can gently pick us up off the floor and we are then able to hear Him say, “You have My strength; you are made strong in your weakness when you acknowledge that weakness and give it all to Me.” When we accepted Christ as our Lord and Savior, He washed us whiter than snow with His shed Blood. We know, therefore, that we already have salvation. But because we are His children, He wants us to admit that we are constantly falling into fleshly thoughts and actions. When we do, He has mercy on us, and gives us His strength to move on and in the direction He chooses.

R

emember, even Paul who became a devoted Apostle of Christ, who brought the Word to many said, “Therefore, to keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a message of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated” (2 Cor. 12:7); meaning to keep himself from being too full of his own good works and too proud of his accomplishments (worthy though they were), and to make him aware of his own weakness. Paul was forced by his thorn to repeatedly approach Christ and then to receive Grace. And Scripture tells us that the thorn, the weakness, never left him, but that Christ’s strength, Christ’s Grace, was sufficient for him. Paul accepted that Grace; he relied on His Savior and not on himself. Rejoice, then, in those times when you feel the weakest and most ineffectual…when you feel defeated by the world or by your own failure and sin, or when others seem to be lifted up sooner or higher than you are. Know that you are right where He wants you to be and that the Father is right there with you

to comfort you, to cover you with His righteousness, and to love you into His strength.

T

his, too, was Paul’s declaration. “For we rejoice when we’re weak and you are strong.” We should never be too proud to rejoice in the strength of others but always stay humble, for that is the place where God does His greatest work in us, because it brings Him the full Glory. “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness. So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weakness, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.” (2 Cor. 12:9) “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you in due time. Cast all your anxieties [not some, but all] on Him, because He cares for you.” “And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you. To Him be the power forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 5:6, 10, 11)

T

here is an affirmative post-script to this devotional; in Bible study class this morning where we are finishing up the Book of Matthew, our leader for today turned to another book of the Bible to read a particular supporting Scripture. It was, “When I am weak, then I am strong.” When we search for a word of Truth, it is often confirmed by someone else. Today, it was not only confirmed/affirmed once for me but twice, as later in the day while reading a final chapter in a pastor’s book of testimony that very same Bible verse appeared again. Praise God! His Word is Truth, and He speaks to the sheep of His flock always…if and when we are ready to hear and receive.

The Good News Chronicles

Natural Treatment for Attention Deficit / Attention Deficit Hyper and Autism Spectrum Disorders At Pompa Health Solutions, children with ADD / ADHD like behavior and those within the autism spectrum (ADD through autistic) all start out on the same program. The approach is the same because the root causes are the same; that is, nutritional imbalance and neurotoxicity leading to neurological damage. The further a child is to the right of the spectrum (exhibiting disorders like sensory integration, aspergers, and autism), the more neurotoxic he/she is. We know that such children will not recover without proper detoxification; therefore, we apply all the steps outlined below. To the left of the scale, however, we need only assist the body back to balance with chiropractic care, dietary modification, and education. Besides Dr. Pompa’s Healing Diet, very little detox is needed with this condition. Numerous studies over many years have conclusively linked AD(H) D type behaviors to such things as traumatic birth process (leading to misalignments of the spine called subluxations), the consumption of sugarrich and processed foods containing preservatives and dyes which create subluxations, and to metal and chemical toxicity from environmental sources and vaccinations. In our practice, without prescribing medication, we have overcome the ill effects of these things at a 100% success rate when parents partner with us in following our program for the well-being of their children on the autism spectrum. Before we begin the program, our behavior consultant conducts an initial assessment to explore the severity of behavior and level of need. The consultant attempts to identify external factors (environmental and nutritional) and internal factors (emotional, dental, and visual) that may be triggering behavioral issues. Following the assessment, we use a series of protocols to treat and remove central nervous system interference. We also work with other specialists who treat and remove additional interferences. As a result, we can better guide the parents and the child into an individualized

plan of care or treatment plan according to our prescribed protocols. In some cases, it may be necessary to begin at a more advanced level due to individual sensitivities or extreme levels of behavior. STEP 1: DR. POMPA TESTING PROTOCOLS Testing is essential in determining if neurotoxicity is a factor and in identifying the toxins we are up against. It also helps us target the source and remove it prior to detox. Knowing that each child is different, the doctor decides what particular tests are needed (for a listing of tests and detailed information about our protocols, contact Pompa Health Solutions at 724940-7733 or visit http://www.drpompa.com). STEP 2: SUBLUXATION EVALUATION You must have your child checked for subluxations. Anywhere on the spectrum, these kids usually have a loss or reversal of the normal cervical curve, as mentioned above. This is typically the first neurological upset to the immune system and nerve system, and it sets off a complex dysfunction inhibiting the immune system from dealing normally with its surroundings, particularly the toxic stress from the standard American diet, vaccines, and the environment. For most children, all we need do is remove the interference from this structural problem, and then the nerve system (God’s healthcare plan) does the healing. In more severe cases, we need to go to the next step, and possibly beyond. STEP 3: DR POMPA’S “HEALING DIET” This is the most specific diet for neurotoxic syndrome because it is the only diet that detoxifies and heals at the cellular level. It also includes specific supplementation (for detailed information about our protocols, contact Pompa Health Solutions at 724-940-7733 or visit www.drpompa.com). Using exercise, dietary changes, and supplementation with children on the autism spectrum, we typically progress them through treatment at a much slower rate; therefore, we approach treatment with smaller steps to thoroughly accomplish our goal of system detox.

August - September 2013

STEP 4: DR POMPA’S DETOX MODALITIES FOR SEVERE CASES Stronger detox modalities are typically needed only when children are on the far right of the spectrum; that is, with conditions like Asbergers Syndrome, sensory integration, and autism (for detailed information about our protocols, contact Pompa Health Solutions at 724-940-7733 or visit http:// www.drpompa.com). Steps 1-3 must precede this step in order to properly detoxify children with this level of toxicity. Pompa Health Solutions is the only clinic in the Pittsburgh and Wexford, PA area combining these specific types of protocol. These life changing protocols are developed from years of research and personal experience (call Pompa Health Solutions at 724–940 –7733 or visit www.drpompa.com to receive a copy of Dr. Pompa’s son Dylan amazing recovery story). Because of this, we feel confident that we lead the Pittsburgh, PA in the treatment of children with neurotoxic syndrome. Finally, please note that we ultimately treat children — not syndromes or diseases. Pompa Health Solutions and Dr. Daniel Pompa’s passion is to see kids enjoy normal happy lives, behaving as normal children do — not perfectly, but in a balanced way. You see, during years of toxic exposure, a child can learn certain behaviors, and, in time, he will use those behaviors to acquire desired things and to control situations. His success reinforces the behaviors, thereby creating positive experiences for him, and then the behaviors become tools for future use. After treatment and the completion of our protocols, these “tools” often present themselves even though toxicity and/or interference in the central nervous system have been removed. At times, it may be difficult for parents, and others directly involved, to approach positive behavior modification in a balanced way. This is when our behavior consultant can step back into the picture with additional ideas to address the learned behaviors and help bring balance, harmony, and peace back into your family life..................... Yes, there is hope.

TOTAL HEALTH PRINCIPLES:OUR HEALTH MATTERS TO GOD - Part 4 Rev. Mengue M. Eka Abila

C

hild of God, I hope you realize that every dimension, every aspect of your life and wellbeing matters to God.

When we consider Prenatal & Perinatal health factors such as mother’s nutrition or diet during pregnancy and after pregnancy, breastfeeding, physical activities, intellectual activities, emotional state, environment, religious or spiritual belief system, among others, I have a few questions: what is wrong with our ways and what is wrong with our values? Based on Roman 10:14 (How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?), what are we preaching? What is the content of the message we preachers preach? What do we believe in? Is it the Bible? And if it is the Bible, do we model what we preach? How did we, as a minority group, get here (we have the greatest rates in all the unflattering statistics: incarceration, obesity, school drop-out, chronic disease/illness, economic poverty, etc.)? Let me take the benefits of Breastfeeding for example: • Bearing in mind all the health benefits bestowed on the infant and the mother by Breastfeeding, how many mothers in our congregations and community at large are breastfeeding their babies for at least one year? • How many breastfeeding mothers understand that the quality of breast milk is influenced by the quality and quantity of the mother’s diet? Regarding the issue of Food Quality: • How many of us associate the amount of sodium and carbohydrates we consume through our foods and beverages influences our health positively or negatively, depending on the amount? • How many of us check the labels on the food items we all buy and consume daily? • How many of us read, or listen to, the health education information

that is available to us? • How many of us participate in all the free health seminars available to us? • And when we do read, listen and participate, how many of us practice what we learn from these resources? • How many of us allow the unchangeable biblical principles to guide our diet, our decision making processes and/or life style? If the New York City Government, along with organizations such as the Association of Black Cardiologists, among other, was able to launch initiatives that are beginning to yield positive results (see following links), I dare believe that the Church, especially Minority churches, can proactively depend on God for greater health outcomes in our communities and cities. Living Healthy, 2009-2011 http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/downloads/pdf/report/nycdohmh-triennial09-11.pdf http://www.abcardio.org/ Proposed Solution Points • Let’s humble ourselves and pray: confessing our sins of unbelief and its corollaries to the Lord (1 John 1:9; 2 Chronicles 7:14); • Let’s eat healthy: according to the Partnership for a healthier New York City: Nearly nine out of ten New York City public high school youth do not eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables a day.2 Approximately nine out of in ten New York City adults (12.3%) do not eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables a day.3 One out of three New York adults (30.3%) drinks at least one sugary drink per day.3 One out of five New York City public high school youth (20.9%). • Let’s cry out to God for Deliverance from the Demons of Addiction to Sugary Beverages; • Let’s cry out to God for Deliverance from the Demons of Addiction to High Calories, High Cholesterol, High Carbohydrate, and High So-

dium Diets; • Let’s be more proactive in Chronic Illness Prevention Education, Activities, and Wellness Improvement Endeavors in our Minority Church Community, based on Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.; and Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, [which is] your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. I believe the Church can achieve Total Health, by God’s grace and through our more proactive involvement. • Let’s get more involved in Local and City wide, State and Nation wide health initiatives and activities. Personally, I & my congregation (Helper Ministries International, Inc), although we believe and demonstrate divine healing (based on Isaiah 53:5; Mark 16:15-18; and Luke 10:18-19) are involved in various Faith Based Health Task Forces (High Blood Pressure, Cancer, HIV/AIDS, Breast Feeding Initiative) with the Office of Minority Health (OMH), and with the Partnership for a Healthier New York (Healthy Eating, etc. - Brooklyn: Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration). We ensure that the food items in our food pantry are generally healthy. We work in partnership with Time Square Church’s Feed New York City Program, and more recently with the Bowery Mission. We promote Physical Health through health educational activities with the collaboration of Cornell University Cooperative Extension, Brooklyn, the American Heart Association, and physical exercise. Our Spiritual Health is Christ-centered: Christ-centered Prayer, Counseling, Deliverance, Bible Study & Discipleship Classes, and Prayer Nights. This is how we define and endeavor to demonstrate Total Health Principles that include the spirit, the soul, the mind and the body. For details, feel free to contact us at: tel: 718-858-9733 or email at mengue@ helperministries.org, visit our website at www.helperministries.org, or you may write to Helper Ministries International 399 Atlantic Avenue, LL, Brooklyn, NY 11217.

Restoring The Jewish Roots Of Our Christian Faith - (Part V)

Boundary Stones By Pastor Ken Rabinowitz

W

hat is a Boundary Stone? In biblical times, territorial borders were marked off with boundary stones. This was a landmark stone set on its end to indicate the border between a man’s field and that of his neighbors. Unfortunately, not everyone had integrity, and out of pride, envy, and greed these boundary markers would be moved to gain an advantage. Deut. 19:14 says, “You shall not move your neighbors’ landmark which the men of old have set...” Yahweh puts a curse on anyone that moves a boundary stone. Yahweh says, “Cursed is anyone who moves his neighbors’ landmark...” Deut. 27:17. There are boundary stones in Christianity which should not be moved. If you were playing checkers, there are certain rules on how to play the game. Your opponent makes a move and you say it’s against the rules. Your opponent says, “I just changed the rules.” You are not playing checkers; the rules have changed. The boundaries have changed. Our country has changed the boundary stone

Let’s dig a little deeper. Acts 21:20-21, Jewish & Gentile believers through Paul and the Apostles were zealous for the Law. Paul took Nazarite vows to prove he didn’t teach against the Torah. 1John 5:2-3, We know we love God’s children if we love God and obey his commandments. Loving God means keeping His commandments, and His commandments are not burdensome. So what do we do with the Niocene, Laodicen, and Antioch Councils. They outlawed the Sabbath and the 7 Holy Festivals of Leviticus 23. The bible is clear, if you do signs and wonders but teach to not obey or to change the Old Covenant commandments, you are a false apostle, and the penalty is death. These Councils outlawed Yahweh’s holy festivals, and as a result man made holidays have taken their place – Christmas, Easter, and St. Valentine’s Day. I respectfully submit to all of my Brothers & Sisters, please study to show yourself approved, and keep the boundary stones that Yahweh and our Messiah Yeshua has set in place. They teach us how to live and walk as Christians. Lastly, the Holy Spirit does not replace the Torah. The Holy Spirit is the inner resource which enables us to obey the Torah. Ezekiel 36:26-27 and John 14:15-16,& 21.

of marriage set by Yahweh by allowing “Gay Marriages”. The same with abortion; nowhere in the Bible does anyone have permission to do this. The boundary stones were changed. Changing the rules Yahweh has set up changes our faith, our Christianity. If any of the landmarks of the Torah has been moved or removed, then we have compromised the integrity of the Bible. We may have to re-think some of our long held assumptions. Moses warns Israel: even a miracle worker who tells the people to neglect the commandments is a false prophet and should be put to death, Deut.13:1-5. Yeshua and Paul obeyed the Law. Why would Yahweh give a command to execute one who leads them away from the Torah, and then send Paul to tell them they are free from the Law? So what can we conclude? Either: a) Paul was a false prophet (Deut. 13). or b) Yahweh is forgetful, malicious and incoherent, or c) The Book of Galatians and Paul’s teaching about the Torah has been misunderstood. A prophecy is given through Moses in Deut. 30:6-8: we will again obey and keep His Commandments. If you believe the Torah is for the Jews and that Gentile believers don’t need to obey because we now have the Holy Spirit to teach us until Yeshua comes back, then I encourage you to “study to show yourself approved.”

Dealing With Depression D

epression affects about 6.7% of our population and is the result of a chemical imbalance in our bodies, genetics, environment, or psychological factors. Many things can create that imbalance – stress, fear, strife, hormones and spiritual conflict. There are varying degrees of depression. The level of the depression often determines how it is treated. Seasonal Affective Disorder can be treated with increased exposure to light. Severe depression is often treated with drugs or electrical stimulation under the supervision of a doctor. Mild depression may be treated with drugs but can be helped with physical exercise and dealing with our thought life and the things we allow to affect us. Recently, while in prayer, I received the following suggestions to deal with mild depression and would like to share them with you. I do believe that there are spiritual roots to many diseases, and in the case of mild depression I believe it relates to our thought life and how we deal with life issues.

For every thought that we have, there is a nerve transmission, a secretion of a hormone or a neurotransmitter that reacts to it somewhere in our body. These influence us chemically. Below are the insights that I received and hope that they help you in dealing with your depression. Commit your thought life to God each day. 1. Think of something funny and allow yourself to laugh. 2. Think of moments when you were most happy and ask God to take those moments and paste them over any sense of darkness or depression. Light drives away darkness; they cannot coexist. 3. See light consume any sense of darkness in you and see if you feel lighter. 4. Think about God’s unconditional love for you and ask God to let that permeate and touch your wounds of soul and spirit and heal them. Love heals. 5. Ask God to drive out anything that is negative in you and fill you with a spirit of peace and wellness. 6. Ask the Holy Spirit that is within you to fill you up to overflowing with a sense of His presence in you. 7. Ask God to remove any desire (conscious or unconscious) for death (death wish). Yes, we must die to sin and self, but that is different.

8. Speak out loud and confess that you want life and all that God has for you. 9. Give thanks for all that God has done for you in your life. Thank Him for what He is doing in you right now. 10. Ask God to take away any unhealthy guilt or shame that you have and release it to Him. 11. Ask God to take away any un-forgiveness you have towards others and yourself. Ask Him to forgive you for any idle words that you have spoken. 12. Ask God to cleanse your body, soul and spirit of anything that is not of Him. 13. Let go of any anger you are experiencing as soon as possible so that it does not begin to affect your body. 14. Pray in tongues for a period of time, because healing will take place as you pray and your spirit will connect with God’s Spirit and pray what you need. Do this each day for a period of time, and thank God for the resurrection power at work in your life. If you suffer from severe or chronic depression, we recommend that you see a medical professional for evaluation and help. We believe that God uses doctors and medicine to help us.

Communication In Marriage P r o v e r b s 2 : 1 0 - 11 When wisdomenters your heart, And knowledge is pleasant to your soul, Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you.

C

ommunicating in marriage is all about being able to handle the message. When two people are able to handle the message, honesty increases. And when honesty in a relationship increases, you grow more as an individual and closer together. Through this growth you are capable of reaching new levels of passion and intimacy.

C

ommunication problems happen because you don’t like what the other person has to say. For instance, you may want your spouse to be more emotionally open and share their feelings, but you interrupt them when they say things you find unpleasant or disagree with (in your view, you may just want to keep the conversation “accurate”). You want a more expressive spouse, but want to control what they express. So how do you increase thehonesty in marriage? 1. Speak up. By speaking up I’m not saying that you remove the filter between your brain and mouth, but speak up more. How often do you

avoid replying or bringing something up out of fear of your partner’s reaction? There are times when you need to speak up in order to help your marriage and each other grow.

M

any couples fall victim to thinking “if my spouse really cared about me, they’d be able to figure out what I’m feeling or thinking.” What part of your vows stated you’d read each other’s minds for as long as you both shall live? I’m guessing that wasn’t part of the ceremony. Stop sitting, back waiting for your spouse to pick up on the fact that you’re frustrated, pissed, hurt, or lonely and speak up. Two things will happen. One, you will grow up a bit more because you’ve taken charge of your thoughts and emotions and two, your partner will grow up because you’re treating them like an adult who’s capable of handling your thoughts and emotions. 2. Make the obvious, obvious. If you’ve had a stressful day at work, when you come home you know it’s likely to be stressful there as well, right? So rather than letting the elephant in the room (the stress level in your life) walk around freely, point it out before you and your spouse get in to it. A simple “hey honey, good to see you, (kiss), I’d like about 5 minutes to decompress from my day be-

fore I hear about your day, alright?” Another way to make the obvious is when the discussion starts to get heated, point it out. When you raise your voice in a conversation, it’s no longer about what’s best for all the people involved, it’s about your power and your pride. 3. Grow up. Many people go kicking and screaming into adulthood. I was one of them. I wanted things my way! Still do at times. I used to think that life was all about me. And problems occurred when other people didn’t know this. Marriage grows you up. Living with another person forces you to grow up. And just when it seems your spouse is done growing you up, your kids take over. That’s a simple fact of marriage. Recognize this and harness the energy it creates. Rather than seeing your spouse as someone who doesn’t get you, see them as someone who may want more from you. They may be looking for an erotic lover, a passionate friend, a warrior, a true supporter, or simply a partner in life’s adventure. Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct[a] your paths.

Artist Of The Month - Fred Hammond - contd. from page 6 Despite his activities as a producer, concert performer, and actor, however, Hammond continued to be best known for his music. His sophomore solo effort, Deliverance, arrived in 1993 and his releases with Radical for Christ, 1995’s Inner Court and 1996’s The Spirit of David, sold about 350,000 combined copies. The 1998 release Pages of Life: Chapters 1 and 2, however, was Hammond’s greatest success to date. In addition to hitting number one on the Billboard gospel album chart, the release eventually earned platinum sales certification. The 2000 release, Purpose by Design, was another number one album on the gospel charts. The album also earned a Dove Award for Best Contemporary

Gospel Album of the Year. After more than 20 years as a professional musician, Hammond took a great deal of satisfaction that his work reached a large cross section of the audience for Christian music. “We have a youth-oriented sound, but now our audience includes people from as early as eight years of age to 60 years old,” he told Hundley. “Everybody is targeting the youth now, and although I understand that, I’m trying to give the general body something.” Although he was an avid promoter of Contemporary Christian music to a broad audience, Hammond remained focused on his primary reason for making music. “It feels now that people are starting to get into praise and

worship. It’s like I’m teaching them what to expect. It’s like, ‘Lord, I appreciate you for hooking me up! I’ll teach the people with diligence,” he told Clark, adding, “Still a large part of the urban community is not into the praise and worship scene. They like my music, but they don’t know why they enjoy what I do.” by Timothy Borden Fred Hammond’s Career Formed Commissioned, early 1980s; started solo career with release of I Am Persuaded, 1991; founded Face to Face production company, 1992; signed deal with Verity Records, 1996.

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

With God on your side, there is nothing to be afraid of. Our attitude should always be, “The Lord protects me from danger. Why should I be afraid? Though an army surrounds me, though they attack me from every side, I may feel trapped. I don’t see a way out. Medical report doesn’t look good. My bank statement tells me I’m not going to make it. But that’s okay, God is still on the throne. Nothing I’m facing is a surprise to Him.” Remember, the enemy doesn’t have the final say; God has the final say. And when you put your faith and trust in Him, He says, “I will always cause you to triumph.” Be strong and be of good courage. Keep God first place in your life and move forward in confidence knowing that He is working things out for your good.

Who do you share your deepest secrets with? Most people only share their inner thoughts with those who are closest to them. People they trust. People they’ve gone through experiences with. Do you know who God share’s His secrets with? This passage goes on to say, “Who can know a man’s thoughts except his own spirit?” In other words, God’s Spirit knows His thoughts. As believers, His Spirit lives inside of us, revealing to us the heart and thoughts of God Himself.

God wants you to know what He thinks about you. He wants you to know about the plans He has for you. He wants to show you things you’ve never seen, heard about or even imagined. As a believer in Jesus, you are His child, but you are also His friend. He wants you as His closest companion. A PRAYER FOR TODAY He wants to walk with you, talk with and Father, today I choose to put my trust in share with you. What a wonderful, amazYou, my light and salvation. A PRAYER FOR TODAY

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE “Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.” (Psalm 42:7, NIV)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria Friend, I believe God wants to release a flood of His power in your life. Not a trickle, not a stream, not a river, but a flood. A flood of increase, a flood of healing, a flood of ideas. Don’t get stuck in a rut believing for small things. Don’t settle where you are because you think you’ve reached your limits. No, you need to get ready. I can see something in your future. Through my eyes of faith, I can see a tidal wave coming your way. It’s not a wave of defeat, a wave of bad breaks, a wave of more of the same. No, things have shifted. It’s a wave of increase, a wave of favor, a wave of healing! It’s God releasing His goodness like a flood. It’s going to help you to overcome that obstacle. It’s going to cause you to accomplish your dreams. Today, why don’t you dare to believe? Don’t just think “trickle.” Switch over into faith and start thinking “flood.” If you’ll believe for His overflow, God can bring you into overflow. If you’ll dare to believe “tidal wave,” then God will release a tidal wave of His goodness in your life!

Father in heaven, I am so humbled that You call me friend. I am honored to be connected with You and invite You to share Your today’s scripture heart with me. I surrender all that I am to A PRAYER FOR TODAY “That is what the Scriptures mean when You in Jesus’ name. The Passing Of Pastor Samuel Lamb One of the most impactful leaders of China’s house church movement, Pastor Samuel Lamb (also known as Samuel Lam), passed away last Saturday at the age of 88. “The death of Samuel Lamb leaves a hole in

the Chinese Church,” said an Open Doors USA spokesperson. “Together with other heroes of faith like Wang Mindao and Allen Yuan, he symbolized the brave faith of a Church that grew at an unprecedented speed in world history. Long after his passing it will be said in many churches that more persecution only has one outcome: more growth.” Every Sunday after church service, Lamb (Lin Xingiao in Chinese) invited foreign guests into his office and immediately began to tell the story of his life, which he summarized in the one “holy principle” of “more persecution, more growth,” Open Doors said in a statement released on Monday.

Lamb was born in a mountainous area overlooking Macau. His father pastored a small Baptist church and he was raised as a Christian. Lamb was arrested during one of

the first big waves of persecution in Mao’s China and was held in prison from 1955 to 1957. The Chinese authorities sentenced

him a second time in 1958. He spent 20 gruesome years in labor camps, where he mostly worked in coal mines. Despite the harsh punishments, Lamb continued to teach, Open Doors stated. The Chinese government targeted Lamb mainly for his refusal to merge his illegal house church into the Three-Self Patriotic Movement, the state-led Protestant Church, according to Open Doors. The government prohibited Christian leaders from preaching about the second coming of Christ and teaching minors under 18 years old. China closely monitors the state church with principals geared toward government support more so than Christian beliefs. In 1979, Lamb restarted his house church in 35 Da Ma Zhan in Guangzhou. Attendance grew quickly and he moved his congregation to a bigger building in the same city. Now his urban house church is still unregistered, but tolerated by the authorities. The church has over 4,000 attendees each week with four services.

praying the word

ince God’s Word commands us to give constant attention to the Word and to meditate on it night and day,

(Proverbs 4:20-22; Joshua 1:8), it is clear that our praying should not be something separate from the Word, but rather, that God’s Word should direct our praying. For example, Daniel found the promise of the time of deliverance for God’s people and prayed according to that. (Daniel 9:2). His prayer acknowledged openly the truth of God’s Word (Daniel 9:10-15). Many other examples could be given. Elijah’s prayer for the heavens to be shut was based on the promise of God to do this if the people turned away to idols. Praying the Word in a strict sense includes quoting it and using it in our prayers. God responds to his own Word. It will not return to Him void (Isaiah 55:11). We can take general promises from the Bible and using the words of Scripture pray as if we expect God will fulfill them for us personally. This is a powerful form of prayer.

DEDICATION TO PRAYER

fast is where we do not eat (although we may drink water). This intensifies our focus on God, puts down the power of our flesh and enables us to pray more easily, with less mental effort. The only way to pray without ceasing and to have maximum results in prayer is to be willing to practice self-denial where necessary. This includes Spirit-led fasting. Fasting for a day is normal and often very necessary where we are not aware of the reason for which our communion with God is weak. The other kind of self-denial needed in the life of a person serious about prayer is “watching” or denying yourself sleep. This could mean late nights of prayer or getting up early in the morning to pray. Jesus practiced Dr Shirley Maxwell (Luke 18:1). “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalo- both of these in His busy ministry (Mark 1:35; nians 5:17). “Watch therefore and pray always” Luke 6:12) (Luke 21:36). More Than 73 Churches Attacked In Egypt “Undoubtedly, the last week’s wave of fierce attacks on Christians in Egypt is shocking and unprecedented,” a Christian leader in Egypt writes to Open Doors USA. “We’ve always witnessed occasional incidents of variable attacks on churches by radical Muslims in villages or towns, Christian families harassed or forced to migrate from their hometowns, and repeated everyday discrimination against Christians, wherever they lived or worked. But the systematic violence conducted against the Christians of Egypt over the last five days has left the largest church in the Middle East with a long list of losses -- and a number of questions that only God’s holy servant Jesus can show us how to answer. The list is

long, and may not mean much to a reader who has not visited Egypt before, or is unable to grasp its geography. But it is certainly painful! According to the latest report published by the head of the Coptic Cultural Center, Christian losses since the violent dismantling of the two sit-ins of the Muslim Brotherhood last Wednesday are massive: 73 churches and monasteries, as well as 22 adjunct church service buildings (including orphanages, schools and Bible bookshops), were either partially or totally burned down or damaged. Moreover, 212 private Coptic Christian properties have been attacked, looted or set on fire, and seven Christians’ deaths confirmed.”

Fun In The Son Gospel Festival

Congresswoman Clarke to Host a Forum on the U.S. Census Brooklyn, N.Y. – On Monday, August 26, 2013, at 10:00 a.m., Representative Yvette D. Clarke will host a public information forum about the U.S. Census at Kings County Hospital Center, “T” Building, 2nd Floor, 451 Clarkson Avenue. In the 2010, the Census Bureau claimed that New York City had a population of 8,175,133, about 200,000 less than the agency itself had previously estimated. An investigation by the New York Times determined that there are several neighborhoods, particularly in Brooklyn, in which the Census Bureau had not counted every resident, referred to as an “undercount.” “We must consider participation in the census our duty as members of a civil society,” said Representative Clarke. “We cannot allow the neighborhoods of Brooklyn to receive a disproportionately lower share of state and federal support as a result of lower completion rates for the U.S. Census. We need this support to keep our hospitals open to the public, to reduce class sizes in our schools, and to maintain our roads and bridges.” An “undercount” of Brooklyn’s population reduces both the amount of funds allocated to New York State for programs such as Medicaid, transportation, community development, and education. Speakers at the forum will include Pastor Gilford T. Monrose of Mt. Zion Church of God, Rosemarie Fogarty, an Information Services Specialist with the Census Bureau, and Barbara Ferry, a Data Dissemination Specialist with the Census Bureau. U.S. Representative Yvette D. Clarke is a member of the House Committee on Small Business, Ethics, and Homeland Security, where she is the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection, and Security Technologies. She represents many neighborhoods in central and southern Brooklyn, NY which include Brownsville, Crown Heights, East Flatbush, Flatbush, Gerritsen Beach, Madison, Midwood, parts of Park Slope and Flatlands, Prospect Heights, Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, Sheepshead Bay, and Windsor Terrace. Bronx first staging a Blast

Denise (Lady D) Gomez Email: insidethezone64@yahoo.com

Known for its raving success and prolific staging as the premier gospel festival in Jamaica, New York got up close and personal in the limelight of Fun In The Son the Glory Music, Good Neighbors Community Outreach Agency and IHOP Restaurant high-energy production. The event producers placed their indelible mark on an unforgettable event for the entire community as the Stars of gospel – Glacia Robinson, Carlene Davis, Sean Sobers, Eddie James and Pastor Levi shone at the first staging held in the Bronx on Saturday, August 17. The over one thousand eager patrons who gathered on the St. Philip and James playfield on Boston Road had the most energizing experience as beautifully bedecked tents lined the perimeter of the playfield. Under those tents were delectable dishes, care packages, clothing, counseling and assorted paraphernalia that created a truly festive aura. Fly Jamaica, JN Money Transfer and New York Life Insurance Company complemented the vendor lineup with promotional items. Live radio broadcast by Touch FM 105.5 brought coverage par excellence to the highly anticipated event. With a multiplicity of businesses and churches collaborating with sponsors and stakeholders, the epitome of goodwill and unity was unmistakable.

The event kicked off precisely at 12 noon with legendary promoter extraordinaire Tommy Cowan, CEO of Glory Music, who declared Fun In The Son open. The children segment took center stage right after and showcased set pieces in dance, music and drama while the youth segment displayed multitalented expressions indicative of the performing arts with a touch of brilliance. Their set ended at 3:30pm. A day clearly planned with children in mind saw The Children’s Village distributing one hundred backpacks and assorted back to school materials, bouncer castle, cotton candy, snow-cone, popcorn machine and obstacle course – a nostalgic moment for the adults. Prior to show time, Paul Peart, pastor of New Testament Temple Church of God graced the stage and outlined the objective of the festival to the already anxious audience. While patrons milled around and strutted to the beat of soul- stirring music amidst the eighty-two degree New York heat, the crystal clear sound came alive at 4 o’clock with the main event hosted by Nadine Blair of Love 101 in Jamaica. The Garnet Works Crew band pumped the rhythm as the seasoned emcee’s cool, calm and ‘yaad style’ entry paved the way for the electrifying Pastor Levi to the stage. Levi’s fluid poetic pieces from the ‘Psalm’ combined with his deejaying skills heightened the audience in sweet Caribbean style As the audience raved in approval, the beautiful Glacia Robinson with her backup singers in tow held them captive with well known hits as I’m A Winner, Give Thanks To The Lord, Take A Moment And Live, I Am Blessed, You Are My Servant and Hold My Hand. Her stirring performance left the audience mesmerized. But their recovery was swift when the “Cool” Guyanese Pastor Sean Sobers with his calypso rhythm belted tunes like I Believe, Living, I Choose Life and his remix of Eddie James’ Freedom had the perfect set for an enthusiastic audience. With the introduction of the indomitable Carlene Davis’ Holy Holy, emcee Nadine Blair was on cue. Carline’s bursts of energy knew no bounds as she got the audience in a New York state of mind. The classy gospel icon, obviously in good physical form, sang the crowd-favorites Rivers of Babylon, Handful of Salt, Nobody Greater, Days of Elijah and Wish I Knew Then. A dynamic performance coupled with her tastefully choreographed dance moves by her back up vocalists was superb.

The grand finale with Eddie James and his power packed set piece was phenomenal. His engaging style and commanding presence won the hearts of those who heard and saw his forty-team multiracial group of young men and women whose lives were rescued from the grueling existence of drugs and gang-related initiations. . The hour and a half long repertoire from Break Every Chain, Freedom, Fire and Shift dared anyone to leave their sitting or standing position for a second. From this vantage point, that was the perfect ending to a beautiful event in Bronx New York. The chronicle has begun and plans are already underway for the second staging.

OPEN DOORS AROUND THE WORLD CAPSULES Ugandan Pastor Continues Treatment Following Acid Attack “I have so far undergone seven surgeries and have three more to go. The next one is scheduled for Aug. 28. It seems like a never-ending battle for me, but I am glad that I have not let it put me down. I have recently been encouraged by visits from some long time Ugandan friends. I also thank you so much for all your prayers and support. Please keep praying for me.” These were the words written by Pastor Umar Mulinde from Israel recently where he is continuing his stay for the sake of medical treatment. On Dec. 24, 2011 just after a Christmas Eve service at the Gospel Life Church, Namasuba in Kampala, unknown attackers tossed concentrated acid into his face. Umar told an Open Doors (OD) worker who visited him within hours of the attack that he was approaching his car when he heard a voice shouting, “Allah Akbar! (God is Greatest)” Next he felt a stinging sensation in his face, followed by intense

burning and eventually excruciating pain. The agony as the acid ate away at his flesh caused him to lose consciousness. He awoke at the Kampala International Hospital where he had been rushed. Doctors reported that the acid had badly damaged his skin and some facial bones. It also blinded one eye. From there Umar was flown to Israel for specialized treatment where he remains. The financial pressures of his situation are a constant concern for Umar, but he isthankful for the help and support he has received from OD and other individuals and organizations. “I am trusting God for a quick recovery, and for the provision in all the needs of my family and ministry. For sure I have gone through challenging, painful moments of my life but I really thank you for quickly coming to my rescue at my very point of need. God bless you indeed.”

Pakistani Christians Ensure Police Arrest Key Murder Suspect

Forty-five-year-old Ishaq Masih, a resident of a village in the Okara district, near Lahore, Pakistan, was shot dead on July 27, his children say, by a man named Muhammad Luqman (alias Ranjha) who, accompanied by others, had illegally occupied Masih’s land. Fearing the police would not follow “due process” as a minority Christian was involved, local Christians rushed

to the scene. They then refused to bury the body for three days (contrary to Pakistani practice of burial the next day) until police had agreed to register the murder, arrest two of the suspects and conduct an autopsy. On July 29, police promised that they would arrest all other suspects (including Ranjha) within a week, but only if the Christians would bury Masih, and then

Police, however, failed to arrest prime suspect Ranjha by their self-imposed deadline of Aug. 5, the outcome Bahadur and others had feared. Meanwhile, seven suspected accomplices were released on bail.

Global Affairs & Christianity Pray For The Most Persecuted Faith Group In The World - Christians Open Doors USA Offering Resources to Observe International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church on Nov. 3 SANTA ANA, Calif. (Aug. 15, 2013) – After three months in

prison, Indonesian Pastor Bernard Maukar was released on April 29. Maukar was imprisoned for leading his church without a permit. An Open Doors field worker visited him during his incarceration and told him that many Christians around the world were praying for him. “I was strengthened when I learned that many people whom I never knew were praying for me,” Maukar said. Maukar is one of more than 100 million Christians who face persecution in more than 60 countries around the world because of their faith in Jesus Christ. Almost 75 percent of the world’s 6.8 billion people live in countries with high or some restrictions on religion, according to a study by the Pew Research Forum on Religion & Public Life. Also, Christians are the most widely persecuted faith group in the world. The persecution and lack of religious freedom often leave believers feeling like they suffer alone. For this reason, Open Doors is asking free Christians to be One With Them. OneWithThem is a call to action to unite with persecuted believ-

ers, not just on the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church (IDOP), but during the months leading up to Sunday, Nov. 3. Through OneWithThem Open Doors USA is mobilizing churches and Christians across the United States to get on their knees in prayer and on their feet in action to show that American Christians are in unity with those who live where being a follower of Christ costs the most. IDOP is a global day of intercession on behalf of persecuted Christians worldwide. Its primary focus is uniting Christians to pray and act for those who face imprisonment, harassment, disenfranchisement and even death for their faith in Jesus Christ. Although Open Doors USA has set the first Sunday in November as IDOP observance, churches, schools, small groups and families can honor this annual call to prayer any day of the year. Open Doors is offering a free IDOP prayer kit. The kit includes a prayer event leader’s guide, several powerful videos, four PowerPoint presentations and resources for worship music and scriptural passages about persecution. The prayer kit can be ordered at www.OneWithThem.comor call 888-5-BIBLE-5 (888-5242535). “Every one who loves Jesus and knows the life and freedom His forgiveness brings should be deeply troubled to know that every day believers are persecuted, imprisoned and even martyred for daring to follow Jesus,” says Dr. David Curry, Open Doors USA President/CEO. “The International Day of Prayer for the Perse-

Egypt Is Bleeding

Pastors Arrested

Two men arrested for reading Bible.....

MURRIETA, Calif. – Two men who were arrested for reading the Bible aloud outside of a California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office were found not guilty today in a state superior court. Riverside County Judge Timothy Freer agreed with attorneys for Pastor Brett Coronado and Mark Mackey that the prosecution failed to prove that the men had violated the law with their evangelistic activities. As previously reported, the incident occurred in February 2011 when Coronado and Mackey, along with their friend Edward Florez, Jr., went to the DMV in Hemet early one morning to evangelize those who were waiting for the facility to open. As they stood in the publicly-owned parking lot, approximately 40 feet from the entrance, Mackey began to read out loud from the Bible. However, soon after, he was approached by a security officer at the DMV, who asked him to move elsewhere. The men then asserted that they had a First Amendment right to engage in their activities, and Mackey continued to read from the Scriptures. Approximately 10 minutes later, California patrol officer Darrin Meyer arrived on the scene, grabbed Mackey’s Bible, and put him in handcuffs. He informed the men that they could not “preach to a captive audience.” “This is what the United States is coming to,” Mackey began to call out, holding his hands behind his back. “You can preach on your own property,” Meyer said. Connect with Christian News “What law was he breaking?” Coronado and Florez asked. “Were you preaching too?” Meyer respond-

ed. “Do you want to leave or do you want to be arrested?” When the men continued to inquire from a second officer as to why Mackey’s activities were considered unlawful, he put them both in handcuffs, citing them for “impeding an open business.” After being released, the men retained the help of the Christian legal organization Advocates for Faith and Freedom, which soon filed a federal lawsuit against California Highway Patrol. However, Riverside County District Attorney Paul Zellerbach responded by charging two of the men, Mackey and Coronado, with trespassing for failing to obtain a permit to conduct a “demonstration or gathering in or upon any state buildings or grounds” and ordered the Christians to stand trial. “This was a misdemeanor case, but it was so important to District Attorney Paul Zellerbach that he had one of his top felony prosecutors handling this case,” Bob Tyler, who represented the men in court along with affiliate attorney Nic Cosis, told Christian News Network. “It goes to show how politically motivated and ideologically driven this prosecution is.” Tyler said that he found it interesting that the prosecution decided not to call the arresting officer to the stand. “I think part of it is because they knew we would have cross examined him significantly on this idea that the officer claimed that they were violating the law [by] preaching to a captive audience,” he stated. Instead, with the new trespassing charge leveled by Zellerbach’s office, the prosecution had to prove that the men were engaged in a “demonstration or gathering.” In order to evince guilt, prosecutor Scott Mason had to establish that the men drew a crowd, as opposed to merely speaking in

cuted Church is an opportunity to engage, advocate and support those around the world who worship Jesus at all cost. I urge all believers to stand in the gap for persecuted Christians during IDOP and all year long.” The kit also includes an OneWithThem wristband. Wearing the flexible, silicone wristband that looks like barbed wire is a unique reminder to pray for persecuted followers of Christ and a great conversation starter with your friends, family, neighbors and strangers to show that you are supporting suffering Christians. Pastor Maukar was given a wristband while in prison by the Open Doors representative. “I really liked the wristband,” he said. “It is unique and many people in prison asked me about it and what it meant.” To order additional wristbands, visit www.OneWithThem.com. The wristbands cost $1 each and will provide financial support to Open Doors programs which strengthen persecuted Christians. A pack of 25 wristbands is $25. The wristbands come in two sizes – regular (20 cm/7.8 in) and large (22 cm/8.6 in). Open Doors is also offering a 6-by-4 foot world wall map filled with inspirational quotes to use as a tool to pray for countries on the Open Doors World Watch List of the 50 worst persecutors of Christians. Price is $50 including shipping. Also, country profiles, testimonies and prayer requests from the countries where Christian persecution is most severe can be downloaded at the OneWithThem website.

the vicinity of those who were waiting in line to enter the DMV. “They were not able to prove that they drew a crowd of onlookers, ” Tyler explained. “They didn’t present any witnesses who said they walked over and stood there and watched the men reading the Bible.” “The prosecution failed to meet their burden of proof. They did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that our clients committed a crime under the law that they charged them with,” he outlined. During the trial Tuesday, Tyler made a motion for a directed verdict just before it came time to put on evidence for the defense. Judge Freer granted the motion, stating that the prosecution’s argument was unconvincing. “He agreed with us that the prosecution failed to meet their burden of proof, and entered a defense verdict on behalf of and in favor of our clients,” Tyler explained. “As part of his statement, he [also] said that he believed that the law is unconstitutional, but that he does not have to make that ruling because that issue is moot since he found that [the prosecution] did not meet their elements in the first place.” Tyler says that he will now proceed with the civil suit that he filed against California Highway Patrol, which has been on hold pending the outcome of the trial. “Our clients are very satisfied with the ruling,” he said. “In a judicial system where justice seems to be fleeting in many instances, we are very excited that we won this case and are pleased to have had a judge who seriously considered the evidence and applied the law in a fashion that was intellectually honest regardless of his personal views.” By: Heather Clarke.

Christian Leader Pleads for Prayers; Says ‘Those Are the Hardest Days We’ve Ever Witnessed’ (The following analysis about the hor-

rific violence across Egypt was written by a Christian leader in Egypt. He is unnamed due to security concerns). The words are heavy to put together this morning. The sad day of yesterday (Aug. 14) resulted in a sleepless night not only for me, but also for millions of Christian and Muslim Egyptians who love this country and genuinely seek its good and welfare. It was a day of many tears, pain and agony for what Egypt witnessed for the violence that resulted. According to the official report of the Egyptian Ministry of Health, there were 235 deaths and 2001 injuries. The number of casualties and injuries reported by the Muslim Brotherhood and promoted by Al-Jazeera and other Muslim Brotherhood-supporting media channels are of course much higher. This is not the time to sit to at a discussion table to decide who is right and who is wrong or what should or should not have been done in the first place. The issue now is not either to decide whether Muslim Brotherhood protesters who were forced to leave Rabaa-el Adawia and NahdaSquares (where they have camped and blocked the streets for the last 45 days) were peaceful protestors who had a legitimate political case to defend or were not. I can pretty much go further to say that it’s not even the time to weep over tens of churches, Christian buildings, schools, Bible bookshops, shops and houses of Christians that have never systematically been targeted, looted, attacked or burnt down like what happened yesterday in Minya, Assiut, Sohag and several other cities. The murder last week of the 10-year-old girl, Jessica Boulos, as she was walking back home from her Bible study class at one of Cairo’s evangelical churches by a fanatic Muslim gunman is unbearable and continues to throw it’s shadows of pain on her broken family and the entire Christian community of Egypt. In all of this mess, the loss of church

buildings great, but not to be compared with the loss of the many souls, the pains of the wounds and the fear and anxiety that have filled the hearts of all that can yet happen in Egypt today and the days to come. Buildings can eventually be re-built, but when lost, souls can never be restored. It was announced last night by our interim President Adly Mansour for Egypt to follow the emergency law for one month. Fourteen governorates (including Cairo, the capital) are now under curfew from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. after the numerous attacks of the Muslim Brotherhood on public services buildings and private properties. We see and hear angry Muslim Brotherhood members coming on TV screens threatening to burn Egypt down entirely to form what is so called “Egypt’s free army” and fight against the current army to accelerate the battle with the Jihadists in Sinai and that Egyptians will not be able to sleep until former president Morsi is back into office. Please continue to pray for my country. Those are the hardest days we’ve ever witnessed. The peaceful Egypt is now soaked into violence, hatred and desire to revenge. My heart and the hearts of millions of Christian and Muslim Egyptians are bleeding as we see Egypt turning into a strange country we’ve never knew before. Please pray for: Peace to come back to our cities Wisdom to Egyptian police and army forces as they handle the major upcoming security issues that are facing them Tremendous power of love and forgiveness to fall on the hearts of the Christians as we seek to follow to the teachings of Jesus to pray for our attackers and persecutors and forgive them • The voice of reason to come back to the crowds of Muslim Brotherhood protestors so the brainwashed followers may stop, think and follow the sound of reason, not the orders of deceiving leadership. “Ya Rab” ((my Lord) save Egypt from evil!
