he trip to Grenada was a tremendous blessing. There were a total of twenty four people that went from Liberty Hall Cathedral of Praise Inc. and various churches; the unity was excellent between the group. They visited two different parts of Grenada, La Portre and Maribu. The mission of the trip was to feed, clothe and educate the people in the word of God. They were able to feed and clothe over 250 people in both parts of Grenada. There was also a vocational Bible school set up for the children and through that outreach the group was able to feed and clothe over 350 children in both locations. Revival was for six days, three days in each location and a total of 26 people came to the altar in both locations. The people were so excited for the word of God that they came in the rain while Bishop Scott preached, to hear the word. They did not leave until it was over. The people received the group with an open and thankful heart. The group also went to those who were shut in, brought them care packages filled with food, bed linens, and toiletries. The group also prayed with and for them and encouraged them as well. Some areas were not reachable by transportation, so the group walked to those families who were in need of food, clothing and much needed prayer. Minister Goulbourne was mostly touched by the people who were shut in because they were not able to move and to be able to give a hand to those was a true blessing for her. Overall the group went to accomplish what God sent them to Grenada to do which was to love, feed and clothe his people while encouraging them in the things of the Lord.

GOSPEL ARTIST OF THE MONTH
w
orld renowned gospel singing group the Grace Thrillers keeps the fire burning after thirty eight years of excellence in local and international performances. The group was founded in 1971 by Mr. Noel Willis. The group has not lost its flavor and still is the most outstanding gospel group from the Caribbean. The original Grace Thrillers are now watching the continuous growth as the new younger members are taking the US among other countries by storm, performing original Grace Thriller hits as well as fresh new songs. The standard is a well kept one, as Mr. Noel Willis Jr. Mr. Noel Willis Sr. and Mr. Grub Cooper one of Jamaicans most outstanding song writers and arranger, an icon in the music business, select members of the group as time goes by. Mr. Noel Jr. son of Shirley Willis and Noel Willis the only child in the group, express the necessity of keeping the standard. Not only in their individual characters but also as a group carrying on the great legacy of the former grace thrillers. The trail that the grace thrillers have made is without a doubt a difficult one to keep up with. As they have acquired an impressive lineup of achievement and a number of awards to accompany them, they’ve performed throughout the US, the UK and the Caribbean among other places and have had the privilege of performing alongside some of gospel grates icons, such as the Hawkins Family, the Commissions, the Richard Smallwood Singers, Shirley Caesar, Jesse Dixon and the Williams Brothers. Never the less the newer members which have been singing together for 6 years are taking on the challenge and are running well with the baton, and seem eager to take the group to an even higher level. The members of the group presently are Natalie Evans, Althea Hemmings, Mary Samuels, Cadian Brown, Shalli Buchell, Latoya Hall-Dowlder, Noel Willis Jr. and Alrick O’Connor.

COURTNEY
tephanie Courtney is a young, inspirational singer-songwriter, rapidly developing a following as an independent artist. A talented teenager, she’s focused on writing and singing songs of purpose – moving, thought-provoking lyrics and melodies written to inspire greater meaning in the hearts of her fans. Music plays a special role in Stephanie’s life and career. While many in her position are focused solely on stardom she’s on a mission. Her goal is achieving greater success to become the conduit of positive messages to greater numbers of people in need of hope and confidence. Stephanie first came to the attention of the musical world at just three years old. As she grew older she endured the typical teasing common among school children. She pleaded with her pastor to let her sing, knowing it would be a positive form of expression, soothing her hurt and anger. She soon discovered her talent was an inspiration to others as churches, festivals, and concert organizers asked her to participate in high-profile musical events. Stephanie now has an active schedule, recording and performing throughout the Northeast, at venues across the country and around the world including the Naparima Bowl in San Fernando, Trinidad, and Harlem’s legendary Cotton Club. She’s appeared in numerous media including appearances on the radio broadcast of the civil rights organization, the National Action Network. In 2008 she released her first album, Lord, Just Me and You. She is currently working on a new inspirational project with some of New York City’s premiere writers and musicians. Minister Patrick Tyson’s Enormous Turn Out As He Launched His 2nd New CD Minister Patrick Tyson received an enormous turn out at the launching of his new album entitled Walk With Me. This was held at the Bronx Wood church of God International on the eighth of August 2009. The concert was very enjoyable. There was a full house of entertainers, as many churches, friends, well wisher and other influential personnel’s gathered to celebrate with him. Mr. Tyson took the time to acknowledge and introduce all the people who assisted him, in making his album a success, as well as those who encouraged him. When he took the microphone and started singing, the crowd was wowed by his powerful performance and his ministry touched the heart of those were present. As he delivered “Tis so sweet” the seventh selection on his cd, the audience was in a serene worship mood as they rocked to the melody, some with lifted hands. Mr. Tyson also brought on stage two of his associates who worked with him on this selection. It was marvelous as their voices captivated the listeners. Radio personality Steve from Royal Radio Brother Devon and Brother Timmy was the MC of the evening.
As he welcomed the artists to the stage, one after the other, they performed with great compassion and spirituality. The contribution from artists such as bother Clavore, Desmond White, Bronx Miracle Tabernacle Choir, sis Burchell, Barrington Reid, Marvet Goodly, Evang. Gobourn, Sister Ivy, Winsome Douglas and the legendary Hopeton Lewis all did a tremendous job in making this event a success. The concert was supported by Doctor Glorie McKay from the All Nation Tabernacle of prayer, Rabbi Keith Elijah Thompson from Bronx Miracle Tabernacle Pastor A.G Quarry from Bronx Wood Church of God and other pastors who took the time out, to show their appreciation for Mr. Tyson’s work for the Almighty. The Blessing of God through the concert was recognizable as the attendees gave their donation to assist children with supplies for back to school. Rabbi Keith Elijah closed the event with a prayer. While the supporters left the forum the end separated it was great to hear this new cd playing melodies of praise in the air.

Dextor Mckenzie For City Council MCK09 Campaign HQ, Brooklyn, NY.
Os
ne afternoon, a lady handed me a bit of religious literature. Having a few of my own, pertaining to my political campaign and candidacy for a City Council seat from the 45th District, Brooklyn, I took the liberty to give her one. She hardly noticed my pamphlet but quickly asked me if I was prepared for the coming of the Savior. We had a brief conversation about religion, at the end of which I inquired about my pamphlet she held in her hand. She smiled and explained with earnest that this earth is the devil’s dominion and that God had departed, on a promise to return. She further went on to state that since Satan governs the earth, then governments of the earth are of the devil and by default evil and explains why she is utterly uninterested in politics… and my pamphlet for that matter. I immediately thought of the pool of Siloam (John 8) and how a full bath, head to toe therein, could be of benefit to her. But then a more sober contemplation supervened. We are living in a society where the very foundation thereof erodes. World-wide recession is a foremost menace, as the underpinning of greed—upon which it is erected—buckles below the load of ill-gotten gain. In the wealthiest nation in modern history, one in eight Americans now live below the poverty level. In certain communities the number is one out of four, even one in three. Unemployment is in the double digits and can be multiplied by two or three to more accurately reflect that of minority communities. Parents, many single heads of households, work multiple jobs just to make ends meet, leaving their children without supervision. Our state prisons swell under the burgeoning numbers of young men and women cast aside and out of sight so as
not to be a reminder of our own failures. A full 95% of these are high school dropouts supplied largely by a failing education system, where only 4 out of 10 students ever graduate high school. Disaster can be the only outcome when as a society we see it fit to expel God from school under the guise of separation of Church and State. Thousands of these men and women return to the community each year, disenfranchised and without hope or opportunity, fall back into criminal behavior and recidivism. We have made unprecedented advancement in medicine and indeed people are living longer. Yet, they are sicker and require more and more resources as health care cost soar and health insurance becomes more elusive. Premiums and co-payments skyrocket as struggling employers shift the burden of cost onto already weakened workers. I can see why some, like the lady in this story may contend—even by aid of parts of certain scriptures—that God has abandoned this world and only the devil walks here. I can see how it may seem futile to attempt to intervene given the enormity of the problems we face. But Colossians 1:16-18, tells us that by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions or principalities or powers: all things were created by Him and for Him. The most holy and glorious God our father is in heaven but his kingdom has arrived here on earth and we should expect all things as are in heaven. Luke 6:9, tells us,” Our father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.” My friends, this is God’s world and we as Saints in God’s army have a solemn duty to put on the full armor of God and serve with conviction in the spiritual battle for the minds, hearts and souls of all God’s children. We will not concede an inch of ground to the evil forces which amass and align themselves against the purveyor of truth

and justice. Saints, upon my announcement to seek the office of New York City Council for the 45th District in Brooklyn, I made that bold step, audacious and unafraid. And since then I have seen the alignment of certain powers and principalities against me for the sole purpose of suppressing the truth so a lie can live. But I am undaunted and confident that truth, which is divine, will always prevail. So I march forward on to the glory of the spiritual victory. If you by discernment understand what I have conveyed herein and are desirous to walk with me, please contact my office at:718-629-4110-1 or mckenzie2009@Ymail.com --End— Contact: Aubrey L. McKenzie (left), all the best in the run up to the September 15 Democratic Primary. Candidate McKenzie promised that it will not be politics as usual after January 1, 2010. McKenzie is running in the 45 district that includes parts of Flatbush, East Flatbush, Flatlands, Midwood and Canarsie. Clifton Edwards Photo.
Bishop Stewart delivered a powerful message as he spoke about the blind man who cried out to Jesus as Jesus passes bye. Who never stop crying out Jesus thou son of David have mercy upon me until he received his sight. His words were basically that “ Opportunity comes but one”.

An outspoken advocate for equal opportunity during his tenure with the New York State Assembly (1984-1996), he launched an investigation into hiring practices by employment agencies that resulted in significant legislation barring employment discrimination and increasing penalties for civil rights violations. He created the “Drug Trader Arrests and Conviction Program” (DTAC) that led to over a thousand drug-related arrests and liberated Bronx neighborhoods from the scourge of drugs and drug-related crimes and violence. This model program won strong bi-partisan support and recognition and earned editorial praise from the Daily News, which declared, “If ever there was a gold medal in the war against drugs, Assemblyman Larry Seabrook should be considered”. Rise of the African Church By Herbert Pinnock
T
hough the number of people who declare themselves as Christians have diminished in the United States, according to the last census, from 60.6 percent in 2001 to fewer than 50 percent in 2006, there is a powerful Christian groundswell, currently taking hold in Latin America, Asia, and Africa that is nothing short of awe inspiring. African Christians, especially, are having a major influence on the direction and growth of Christianity throughout the world. The numbers have been simply astonishing. At the beginning of the last century, the number of Christians in Africa was just over an impressive 10 million, by 2000 that number had grown to an amazing 360 million. Perhaps there is no better testament to the rise and influence of African Christians than their prominence in the Anglican Church. According to the Associated Press, Africans account for about half of the world’s 76.5 million Anglicans. Nigerians, alone, represent the biggest Anglican congregation outside of England, with 17.5 million members. Over the years, the African Anglican Church has extended its sphere of influence way beyond its immediate borders. In fact, the continent, through many of its provinces, has played an active role of overseeing a number of churches within the United States. This is quite unbelievable, when you consider the long familiar imprinted images of missionaries trekking to the continent to bring the light of the gospel to a Christian challenged world, and after considering the resigned acceptance by many that Christianity had always been, and would always be, a Western faith. An acceptance that is not embraced by Reverend Emma Lisbeth Banson, of the Divine Favor Assembly of God, in the Bronx, New York. A minister from the
Republic of Ghana, Reverend Banson is quick to point out that “Africans have known the gospel ever since the time of Jesus,” a point to be made, as she notes the contribution of the continent and its people in many stories of the bible. Still, today, there is a sense that the West, which had promoted Christianity throughout the continent, has now lost its core and found its energy sapped, while Africa has taken up the message and has now become the fire that is burning wildly with the spirit of God and lighting the world with his message. One of the driving forces behind the growing dominance of the African Church, in the international Christian community, is it’s allegiance to biblical orthodoxy. The sentiment of many is that Church leaders in England and the United States have deviated too far from traditional teachings, and it is that traditional word of God, with its challenge to obedience and promise of rewarding grace that has attracted so many worshipers. “Our God is an old God,” said Reverend Banson, as she explains that God is the one remaining constant in a changing and modernized world. “I notice that, today, many try to explain away the word of God,” she continued, “but we accept God for the totality of who he is.” Reverend Banson is one of many evangelical ministers of the gospel, from the continent of Africa, who has seen a steady increase of members to her church. A minister for over twenty years, she credits the increase in members to her message. “We approach preaching with a message from God. I come with an energy that has been given to me from God. I come knowing that what I have to preach is going to impact someone’s life,” she explained, enthusiastically. The Message is being heard loud and clear, not only in churches, but in guiding institutional agendas. An examination of the Anglican Church, once again, would In an article covering the Lambeth Conference of 2008, the once-every-ten-years convened conference of
Anglican bishops, the New York Times wrote a headline which declared: “As the Old-Line Anglican Churches Wilt, Those in Africa Flower Profusely.” The article, by Gustav Niebuhr, then went on to report the astonishing news that for the first time in over a century the heads of dioceses of Africa and Asia outnumbered “the bishops who are heads of dioceses in the Church of England, the Episcopal Church, and the Anglican Churches of Canada and Australia.” We are witnessing a dynamic sea change in the Christian faith, where, for decades, missionaries have traveled to Africa as preachers and teachers determined to impart the word of God. Today, the roles appear to have been switched, as teachers have become students, and a whole new generation of ministers, now from Africa, are traveling across the world to bring their former teachers back into the fold, and to spread the true meaning of the gospel, an Irony of all Ironies with echoes of Zechariah 8:12, which says, “The seed will grow well, the vine will yield its fruit, the ground will produce its crops, and the heavens will drop their dew. I will give all these things as an inheritance to the remnant of his people. “

The Harvest Is Plenty But The Laborers Are Few. Columnist: Whitney Hudson
1 BEDROOM For Rent In Canarsie CONTACT VERONICA TODAY For Details
347-737-8729
There are so many people in the world today who don’t know about Christianity and God’s saving grace. In my column today I chose to take the time to pray for the unsaved. It is true as the bible reveals that the work is plenty and the laborers are few. At this time we really need more souls to be won for the Kingdom of God. Individuals who have never heard about Christ we want them to become a part of the family, those who have turned away we need you back, so God’s work can be accomplished on the earth, with your help. For those who have heard the word but have harden your hearts please say yes today as great will be your reward for trusting him in your life. A Prayer for the Unsaved: Lord Almighty u reign supreme above all. You are an ever seeing ever knowing God. Father I am thankful for your grace and mercy, your unconditional love which is made new every day. There are so much evildoers in your world right now and today I want to present them before u mighty God. Lord have your way with them, let them know that you still love them and want to change to their present situation. Let them know you will grant to them a new life one which is everlasting; it will bring peace, joy and happiness. Father for those who have heard and understand your words but still have not committed their heart, lord let them know that tomorrow is promised to know man. Give them the wisdom to know that the things they want to give up before committing to you, you surely understand and you will be their strength to overcome all their weakness. For all those who have separated themselves from you Father; they started to walk in your light, but had some hard times and have turned away. Let them know that exactly where they chose to let go, you are still waiting there for them with open arms. Lord you said that no man that comes to you, you will no wise cast out. If they repent of their sins right now and restore power to their prayer life, you will take them through day by day. Dear father it is so sad to know that there are countries around the world that have never heard of the name Jesus which is the only way they can be saved. They have never seen the wonders of your work. Lord I know its your desire for all to know about him. So at this time I pray for your believers to do the work you have given them. I pray that they will not be afraid to go where you send them. So your word may be fulfilled. Lord through your son who died, and rose again and will live forever more. In Jesus name I pray that there will be more souls in your kingdom so work will be can be seen in all the earth. Amen Email comments: whitanee@hotmail.com

Favor Fest 2009
By Whitney Hudson
F
avor fest 2009 was held August first at the St. Albans Park in Queens. The event was truly favored by almighty God after a week of continuous rain there was not even a dark cloud in the sky on that Saturday morning. The sun shined brightly and spectators gathered with their umbrellas and lawn chair to enjoy the festivity and entertainment. There were viewers and entertainers from different churches, communities and countries creating and environment for fellowship. Shamiela from 106.3 who is also apart of the Evangelism Media Radio 93.5 FM hosted the show with the assistance of Pastor Claudine Hamilton. The show was opened by bother Damion Rowe who ministered well. The theme, a family restoration was exhibited as several ministers performed with there family . Brother Royston Williamson who is only fourteen followed by his mom Cora Williamson brought some holy ghost energy to the place and had the scattered crowd united. Sister Veronica, performed with her son, Evangelist Dwayne Hudson truly brought some anointing in the atmosphere and created the grounds for worship. Ten year old Shamylia Mighty with a very big voice ministered with her mom .‘The potter wants to put u back together again.” While the splendid spiritual performance continued there were some individuals enjoying the food and drinks stand and others receiving prayers of blessing from Pastor Femi and other pastors; as there was special area for this. The Highland Church choir led by sister Lavonne Jackson-Wright lifted their voice with praise and worship and had the audience singing along. Followed by a gracious dance also from Island Church. As the day grew older the entertainment never got less interesting, as the performers never failed to deliver superbly; from traditional to contemporary gospel in a variety of styles . There was Rap gospel from bother Lavoisier ,a Sing J done by Sister Abbi K and brother Warren Brady ministered some traditional songs with a mix
of reggae. Remarkable was the ministry of Latrina, sister Jastlette ,Phophet Jones and Richard Anderson who had the crowd moving. Orbin Brown aka Pastor Son really had the crowd with his dance and melodies having the spectators singing along with him with in songs such as ‘If Satan a call mi mi nah answer ’ and ‘We come against fall prophet.’ He was invited back unto the stage to pray for the people. The Grace Thrillers trilled the crowd with their holy ghost performance and song some of their well known songs. The audience loved it both old and young were familiar with the grace thrillers and were singing along. Singing, dancing and food was not all there was to Favor Fest 2009, the pastors from different churches gave their contribution also. Ministering the gospel and reaching out to souls. Pastor Femi , Pastor Garden, Pastor Subash, Pastor Butler, Pastor Clark and Pastor Larry W. Davidson came together and help to make this possible. As the event came to a conclusion brother Sheldon gave thanks to all who made it possible; the police from 113 Precent, the spectators and the participants. Spectators seem like they didn’t want this to come to a end but the announcement that this event will be continuous through-out the years to come, brought contentment. Everyone left filled with joy and looking forward to Favor Fest 2010.

unity that is well built and only seems to get stronger is the inseparable bond of Micheal and Bridgette Harons. After sixteen years of being married and twenty three years of togetherness the couple demonstrated what true love is, as they renewed their vows and said I do for the second time. As the groom waited with anticipation at the altar, the beautiful wife and her bridal party made their way down the aisle to the accompanying prelude of “Here comes the bride”. They were prepared to exchange vows and rings as the ceremony began with an opening prayer. Pastor Everton Sterling who is also their pastor, from the Living Faith Ministry gave a great word of wisdom and encouragement, from various scriptures. Pastor Sterling made it clear that being joined as a couple meant that they are now one flesh and no one should hurt his own flesh. He continued and stated, that the wife should reverent her husband and the husband should honor his wife. He also emphasized that love is not a commodity, but comes from within. After the ceremony ended, the bridal party, family, friends and well wisher made their way to the reception. It was a lovely setting, where everyone enjoyed themselves. It was great to see how one and all made the couple’s day such a memorable one; by giving toast, taking pictures, enjoying the food and socializing among themselves. The celebration was truly an unforgettable moment for Mr. and Mrs. Harons, as happiness shined from within; while they danced, cut their cake and fed each other. The evening was incredible; a true representation that with God’s blessing you will find genuine love and with love comes great happiness that will never die.

abbi Bishop Dr. Keith Elijah Thompson gave a warm welcome to City Council member, the honorable Larry B Seabrook and his associates Mr. Daniel Baez, Mr. Carl Green and Mr. Alfred Battle as they came out to support the church’s fourteenth annual Women of Excellence Conference Service which was held on August 16, 2009 hosted by First Lady Yvonne May Thompson. After a refreshing moment of praise and worship, gospel entertainment, by Sis Ivy, Bro Patrick Tyson, Bronx Youth Choir the praise dancers and Brother Claver and others Bishop Thompson along with the members of the congregation prayed for Mr. Brooks and his team. Mr Seabrooks was then invited to make his presentation. In his addressed to the congregation he made mention of how much of a spiritual environment the Bronx Miracle Tabernacle has always been. He then spoke briefly of the work that he has done and is presently doing. You could tell that the he and his team were very appreciative of the warm hospitality as they eagerly participated throughout the progression of the service. First Lady Yvonne May Thompson who was the speaker of the afternoon delivered a powerful message on the topic forgetting the pass. The First Lady said that we should never let the past ruing the future, because when you are born again old things are pass away and all things become new. At the end Bishop made mention that his place of worship is always open to all people for prayer and that he was happy to have MR Larry B Seabrook and his team.

Are We What We Eat? HEALTH CORNER
a
By: Minister Victor Miller
few years ago, a group of investigators claimed to have trained some worms to do a task and then they chopped up those worms and fed them to another group of worms. According to the investigators the second group of worms now knew what the first group has been trained to do. This experiment set off what is proving to be one of the most exciting scientific fights in the history of science. Some laboratories claim that they not only can train worms, but can train large animals, such as mice and isolate chemicals from these mice that will transfer the learned information to nontrained mice, either by feeding or by injection. The response to this has been rather vocal: fraud; liars; cheats; incompetents; not really shown; and so forth. Not in the lay press mind you, but in so-called scientifically detached scientifically detached scientific literature. In fact, one of these authors got his paper published in a very prestigious journal, despite the objections of the reviewer, who clearly did not believe what he read and did not believe it so forcefully that the journal published his rebuttal in the same issue of the journal. This is good science. But let us consider the implications of these experiments. After all, they mean that in a very real sense the smarter the source of your food, the smarter you will be. Could it explain the fact that some people, who have been meat eaters all of their lives begin eating nothing but grass? Is the reason for the vegetarianism of some persons an influential cow chemical they had for dinner one night? Or perhaps we can look forward to an increased desire for cannibalism. Imagine parents fighting for their youngsters to eat the brain of a Rubinstein or Picasso, or screaming for their kids to get a bite of Henry
Aaron or Johnny Unitis. Scholars will probably be safe for a while, while politicians might scurry for dishes made out of movie personalities. Can a person really become like what he eats? Ridiculous? Maybe yes; maybe no. After all, what happens to the information stored in our memory? Our brain allows us to drive a car, to remember telephone numbers, to recall previous occasions, whether they are pleasant or not. This information is available for recall later in life, sometimes many years later in life. Could it possibly be stored in a form that could be transferred to another animal or person? It is possible. From knowledge of computers we get the concept of stored information that can be used and reusedwhether information is stored in the proteins of the human brain or in the sequence of nucleotides in some long RNA molecule can’t even be guessed at, unless the findings resulting from some of the research I mentioned earlier are accurate. Such researchers think information is stored in the human brain in the form of a short peptide, which is simply a very small protein –a few amino acids strung together in a special sequence. There is some evidence that memory requires the production of a special kind of protein or peptide, since chemicals that interfere with learning and memory, at least in animals. So the possibility is quite real, although difficult to believe. The old cannibal custom of eating the heart or other such organ of a most respected enemy may not have been so naïve. But what do we do now? Start breeding cattle with democratic ideals and degrees in mathematics? Is this the end of the use of sheep or pigs for food? Should we get our Navy to serve more fish and our Air Force to serve more fowl? Where will it all lead? Let your imagination carry you to the extremes of speculation. Can’t you just see the advertising copy of the future!

Human Papilloma Virus E Written by: Morrine Foster-Huey, PA-S
very year approximately 10,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and about 3,700 of these women die from cervical cancer yearly in the United States. Cervical cancer is the second leading of death related to cancer among women around the world. Human Papilloma virus has been identified as one of the leading causes of cervical cancer. Human papilloma virus, as its name indicates is a virus, not a bacteria, which is spread through sexual contact with an infected person. The virus affects the skin and mucous membrane. More than 40 different of the virus has been identified and the majority can infect the genital areas of men and women. The areas affected include the skin of the penis, vulva (area outside of the vagina) anus and lining of the vagina, cervix and the rectum. Many of the people who are infected with this virus are completely unaware of it because they do not develop any symptoms. Therefore, many people are not aware that they are infected or that they are infecting other people. A pregnant mother with this disease has the ability of infecting her baby during normal vaginal birth because of the infection within the vaginal canal. Some types of HPV will cause genital warts while other types may cause cancer in both men and women. The type that causes genital wart is not the same type as causes cancer. This virus can cause normal cells on infected surfaces to change and become abnormal based on their location and function. These changes are not felt and many times the immune system may be strong enough to fight these changes and the cells will revert to normal. When the immune system is unable to clear the system and
cause a reversion of the cell type that cancer will develop. The best way to prevent the transmission of HPV is abstinence from sex. Since this, not a choice for the majority of people the next best thing to do is to practice safe sex by using a condom at all times, in addition, to being in a long-term monogamous relationship with a partner who has had no or very few sexual partners. This type of commitment is essential for both partners. Limiting the number of sex partners and choosing a partner less likely to be infected may lower the risk of been infected with HPV. However, it is very difficult to determine who is infected and when they became infected with HPV. There is a test for HPV currently available on the market; however, it is used only at the point of screening for cervical cancer. There is no general test for any man or woman to check their “HPV status”. Genital warts are usually diagnosed by inspection of the specific area, while a routine Pap smear can detect cervical cell changes. It is therefore of utmost importance for women to have a Pap smear as a part of their yearly physical series. Even if a hysterectomy was done, as long as the cervix was not removed, a Pap smear should be completed. Early detection of changes of the cervix can be treated and reduce the chances of the development of cervical cancer. Prevention is far better than treatment. There is currently a HPV vaccine available, but this does not offer protection against all the HPV viruses that have been identified. It offers protection against four (4) major types of HPV. This includes two (2) types that cause about 70% of cervical cancers and two (2) types that cause about 90% of genital warts. Therefore, if this vaccine were admin-
istered women would still need to have pap smears to screen for the other HPV viruses capable of causing cervical cancer. The drawback for this vaccine is that is highly recommended for girls who have not had any type of sexual contact before the administration of this vaccine. Therefore, it is targeted at girls around 11-12 years of age before the girl has had a chance to be exposed to the HPV virus. If given in these circumstances, maximum protection is provided against the diseases caused by the types of HPV targeted by the vaccine. However, it will not offer any protection against any disease caused by HPV to which the girl has been exposed. If you are interested in information concerning whether or not to get this vaccine, please speak with your family doctor. Protecting your health is of utmost importance. For additional information concerning Human Papilloma Virus please visit the following website http://www.cdc.gov/std/HPV/STDFact-HPV.htm
