Evangelist Lascelles Anglin

brought joy and cheer to those in his hometown. At a tender age Lasecelles accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior and continue to use is singing ministry to promote the Gospel of Jesus and to uplift and comfort the heart of others. He is an excellent husband to his loving wife Cynthia and an outstanding father and grandfather to his three children, their spouses, and eight wonderful grandchildren. In 1986 Evangelist Anglin migrated to the United States of America upon arrival in the U.S. he was instrumental in the re-organization of the All Nation United Church of God in Paterson, New Jersey, where he remains a devoted member. As a child Evangelist Anglin would dream of becoming a gospel recording artist, which for a long time seemed unattainable, however through the grace of God it became a reality; In August 2004 Evangelist Anglin released his first Album “Millionaire “and was nominated for several awards over the past six years. In 2006 he received the Gospel

Music Award for Solo Artist of the year Male and the Caribbean Gospel Music Award for the Most Improved Caribbean Artist. His second album “Let the Whole Church Dance” was release in 2006. Evangelist Anglin has not rest since the release of is 2nd albums. He continues to use his strong desire to lead others to Christ through music and the spoken word. Impressing upon listeners it is not about the music but the message in the song. Evangelist Anglin has helped “True Grace Promotions Company” to be recognized as one of the leading Caribbean Gospel Promotions company in the world for Caribbean Gospel Music. He knows that unjustified criticisms can push young people away from the Lord instead of bringing them closer, so he has made it his duty to correctly explain to the youths that there is freedom in worshiping Christ. Always reminding them that man looked at the outward appearance but Christ sees the heart. Evangelist Anglin is about to release his third album which has received excellent reviews, it filled with many inspirational songs with the title track “Mount Calvary” also “I am a child of a King and Through the Storm.” These songs express his love and passion for Christ. This album will build your faith, encourage and uplift you with words and soul filled rhythems. These songs that were written and selected for this album are able to minister to people no matter what level you are in your walk with Christ. UPCOMING ARTIST

Caribbean American trio with a contemporary gospel twist, Latreia is Greek for “divine service in worship”. Their ministry is based on John 4:23 " But the hour is coming and is now here when the true worshippers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him." Since 2005, the three sisters, Chandele Isaac- The Alto, Vivian James, Soprano (married to Minister Orlando James) and the youngest sister; Melody Isaac – the Tenor, formerly known to many as Forever Harmony, have been singing in churches, weddings, banquets and concerts. Managed by their mother, Pastor Cynthia their ministry began to grow adopting band members, Latoya James (Keyboardist) and Alex Jeremiah (Drummer) When the girls were very young they began singing with the song, Precious Jewels. They began making up harmony with their brother Craig who is 95% deaf and who was their drummer until 2009. Amazingly, the young voices so similar to each other and yet unique made the sweetest harmony. While they sang they would adept at interchanging

parts between the three of them. Due to their Caribbean heritage, Latreia has always felt contented singing contemporary praise and worship as well as Caribbean style gospel songs. Latreia bases their unique style on artists such as" Mary Mary", "Out of Eden" , "Take 6" “Grace Thrillers” and a variety of others. Although very young they are a blend of the modern and the good old time sounds. Beginning 2009-2010 Latreia ministered with artists including "Grace Thrillers" Sandra Brooks, Yankee B, Maxine Duncan, Pastor Son and made guest appearances on numerous radio shows throughout the Tristate area. Latreia is in the process of making their first CD Album and is currently seeking an innovative and anointed Bass Player as well as a Producer. The sisters see themselves ministering around the world as they go into the places where they sent by the Holy Spirit. Bishop Foster’s Sermon Spirit Led and Spirit Fed live holy and to be set apart for God. A life of holiness and righteousness is a choice. We must daily choose to subject our old nature and natural desires to Christ. In the subjecting, comes our deliverance. Making a choice to serve God is good; however, choices must be demonstrated in behavior. That is, faith must be revealed through our works. The Holy Spirit is given to us as a helper; to help us live right. The Holy Spirit never fails to do his work; we are the ones who must recognize, receive and be continually led by the Holy Spirit. How do we know that the Spirit of God is leading us? Through prayer, reading of God’s word, fellowship and obedience, we are able to hear from God. We know that we are true sons of God when we consciously make every effort to be led by the Holy Spirit. Spirit Fed: “But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life”.

Romans 8:14 In Romans, chapter 8, Paul the Apostle states that as Christians, we must reject everything that pertains to the flesh, and we must put on the Spirit man that leads to righteousness. When we made a decision to accept and follow Jesus Christ, we made a decision for God to have full control of our lives. This decision was a choice to

Romans 6:22 The condition of the fruit, speaks to the condition of the root. In other words, the quality of the fruit that you bear depends on the quality of nutrients that you receive from the root. Whatever you are feeding on will reveal itself in your body. For example, a person who eats a lot of fatty foods will consequently develop medical conditions of high cholesterol and clogged arteries, among other things. A tree that is not firmly rooted, or is planted on stony ground, or does not receive good food will either produce no fruit, rotten fruit or immature fruit. A Christian who is rooted in the Word of God will develop the fruit of the Spirit that leads to eternal life. A carnal Christian who is rooted in the world will produce fruit of the flesh, which leads to death. What you sow is what you reap; these are principles of life that changes for no one. In order to bear fruit of righteousness and holiness, we must be planted and rooted in the things that are righteous and holy.

respect for their partner, for the home and for the union of Holy Matrimony. Couples talk to each other any old way, say any old things, and do things without consideration for their partner. God said two shall become one flesh, Ephesians 5:31 “ 31For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.” Brothers and sisters, I encourage you to take this word of God serious, let us meditate on these words and practice it in our daily lives with our partners. I bring to mind some scriptures that gives us clear and concise guidance as to how to respond to our partners with respect and how to show appreciation, for this is God’s desire for us as husbands and as wives. God even went on to say to us, if we do not follow his instructions, our prayers would be hindered. 1 Peter 3:1” 1Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;

Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; Ephesians 5:28 “So husbands ought to love his wife as his own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. LEGEND OF

Eleanor Marjorie Riley, the second of nine children born to Edison St. Verlie and Gwendolyn Mahalia Ridgeway, hails from May Pen, Clarendon in Jamaica, West Indies. She is the wife and help meet of Bishop Dr. Cecil George Riley and mother of two anointed and marvelously gifted daughters, Elizabeth and Esther. College and Seminary of California). She is also a professional Bookkeeper and a licensed Cosmetologist. Renaissance: Eleanor’s spiritual renaissance occurred at the Church of the First Born Clarendon, Jamaica, West Indies where she sang in the Sunday school and children’s choir. She then moved up to the young adult choir and represented her church by singing occasional solos at various functions across the Island of Jamaica. Eleanor continued her singing ministry after she migrated to the United States of America. She was joined in holy matrimony to Cecil Riley and soon after they founded the Freedom Hall Church of God. For many years now, she has been very active in the church’s ministry and served as Sunday School Superintendent for twenty two years. She is presently an Evangelist, the Youth Director, Choir Coordinator and soloist—along with her other duties as the First Lady. Eleanor Riley continued singing internationally throughout the United States, Canada, England, and the Eastern Caribbean Islands, going on various crusades with her husband. Always singing before he brings the WORD. Her skillful presentation of the gospel in song and her sense of civil and

community duty brought her to the attention and demand of many distinguished religious organizations. After several years of a fruitful singing ministry, Eleanor Riley, soloist and songwriter recorded her debut album “From the Setback.” The title song, written by Eleanor, is still gaining the attention of everyone who has ever experienced a setback in life. She was inspired by a sermon preached by Bishop Riley, her husband. She recorded eight albums including “Christmas at Home with Eleanor”, “Taste the Victory”, “Flying Higher (Than I’ve ever been)”, “My Story”, “From My Heart”, “Goodness and Mercy”, and “Be Happy”, respectively. Her ninth album, “Watch The Lamb”, was released during the Easter season of 2010. Eleanor Riley is now holding the title of Author. Rungs on My Ladder, a compelling memoir of faith, a must-read for all Christians, is available at Barnes and Noble, on Amazon.com’s eBook – Kindle, and other leading book stores. Eleanor Riley has received numerous recognitions for her accomplishments across the country.Among them are: Letter of congratulations from President and Mrs. Bill Clinton, The Borough President’s

Award, The Caribbean-American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. Recognition Award, The Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace Award, The Gil & Pat Bailey Caribbean Gospel Award, The Hopeton Lewis Caribbean-American International Gospel Award, The Me and My First Lady Award of Orlando, Florida, First Runner-up for the Annual Carib News Mother of the Year award 2009, accolades from The Freedom Hall Churches of God, Inc., The New York Christian Times, The New Genesis Christian Centre, The Universal Temple Churches of God, Inc., music reviews from Air Jamaica Sky Writings, community service award presented during the fortysixth year celebration of Jamaica’s Independence, along with several proclamations and citations from state senators and certificates of appreciations and achievements from assembly members. Eleanor Riley has always been in consecration to stay in a relationship with God in order for her singing ministry to continuously be a success. More importantly, her dedication is to reach others for the kingdom of God. This is evident in the Healing Touch Foundation Ministry that she launched in the Eastern Caribbean to help sufferers of kidney disease.

A PRAYER FOR ALL By The Rt. Hon. Rev. Dr. Rabbi Keith Elijah Thompson

Heavenly Father, I come to thee in the name of Jesus. I pray for the outpouring of your Holy Spirit to come unto all flesh. Your words are forever pure; therefore, I love your word. The entrance and unfolding of your words give life. Look down upon me, be merciful unto me, and show me thy favor. Establish my steps and direct them by your words. Hear my voice according to your steadfast love. O Lord, quicken me and give life according to your righteous decree. Lord, I cry with my whole heart. Hear me so that I may keep your testimonies - by Hearing, Receiving, Loving, and Obeying them. Thank you, Father, for hearing and answering. My tongue shall sing praises for the fulfillment of your word. In Jesus Name, AMEN. REPEAT FAITHFULLY

INTERNET RADIO AND ITS ADVANTAGES TO THE INDEPENDENT GOSPEL ARTISTS

CHILD ABUSE AND THE COPING STRATEGIES THE SPIRITUAL IMPLICATIONS

Internet radio has certainly helped the independent artists by providing them global recognition and exposure that they would not otherwise be able to obtain. Any artist who is not embracing internet radio is not seeing the big picture, and chances are, that artist’s success will be very limited. For many internet broadcasters, internet radio is no longer a hobby but a business. The independent artist must recognize this and endeavor to deliver quality recording consistently. An artist has to pay attention to everything including pitch, production, background vocals, mix, mastering etc… Serious internet broadcasters look for the same standards as terrestrial “local” radio so the artist must come correct and realize that internet radio has significantly changed the game, is here to stay, and MUST not be taken for granted. Why should artists and listeners support internet radio? Artist must support internet radio that is playing their music and Black Gospel internet stations need support the most. Let’s just be real about this, one of many reasons why major radio stations do not play indie artists, has to do with the fact that these artists and labels do not have adequate finances to properly market and promote their artists and music. Radio has to make money in order to stay in business and pay its staff therefore it is no different with internet radio stations. If you are an artist, your financial support by way of purchasing a banner ad on the station’s website, a thirty second commercial, an eblast or by just sending a donation can significantly increase your chance of getting more plays than the artist who does not support financially. If you are a listener, you can send in a donation and email the station and let them know that you are listening and whether or not you think that

By Dr. James A. Gordon

Behind a child naive face and jovial laugh may lie scars of abuses from the past and even from the present. So how can innocence handle trauma? Dr. James A. Gordon uncovers the denials of society and confronts the reality of shame and guilt of children who are struggling with low self-esteem caused by physical, mental, and emotional abuse. In Child Abuse and the Coping Strategies, he deals with the values and the importance of children, their many problems, and the Bible’s solutions to them. Many children are living with scars. On the inside, they are hopeless. Discover how you can help them overcome the dark past and move on to take a beautiful journey with God through facing life’s brighter sides. they are doing a great job. Nothing motivates a broadcaster more than artist/listener input and support. I have found over the years that the greater percent of artists and listeners do not support internet stations financially or by sending feedbacks. Why is artist Support so important? Artists gain massive exposure through internet radio as most of these stations have blogs, and are linked in to social network websites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and others that can greatly increase your visibility. You may already have the previously mentioned sites but it certainly does not hurt to drive more traffic to yourself by tapping into others efforts. Many internet stations have massive databases of subscribers and correspond with them on a daily or weekly basis. By plugging into these stations you automatically get your information through to their databases. To advertise on internet radio is very inexpensive but keep in mind that costs may vary based on the average number of listeners a station generate monthly. Furthermore, when an artist advertises on internet radio, it helps to cover the expenses: Internet connection, electricity, telephone, streaming costs etc. In addition, it motivates the broadcaster to play the music and he or she will be more likely to play and plug your music more. In conclusion, Internet radio provides the independent Gospel artists much more exposure than they can ever imagine! Now, it is up to you to make your career work for you by utilizing internet radio to your advantage by supporting through advertising, feedbacks, emailing others about the fact that those stations are playing your music and sending them the links so that they can in turn listen and support these stations. Don’t let your music die before the world gets an opportunity to hear it.

SPIRITUAL WARFARE OVERCOMING HOUSEHOLD WICKEDNESS PART II

Pastor K. Femi Akojenu Another strategy household wickedness uses is to work hand in hand with familiar spirits. Familiar spirits are demonic spirits responsible for transferring curses from one generation to the other. They are demonic spirits that psychics, sorcerers, witches, warlock, Babalawos, voodoo priests, obeah priests and Santeria priests consult to get information about their clients. There are two sources of power: God and Satan. Familiar spirits are satanic spirits. Don’t be deceived, God didn’t give any of the groups

10

H

O

M

E

mentioned above their power. They all got their power from Satan. Some of them have had their demonic abilities since childhood because their parent, grand parent or an ancestor transferred the demonic power to them. Many people, including church people, are ignorant of this truth. Their ignorance has led them into a lot of trouble. Let me give you a scenario: Mr. A has a spiritual problem. He visits a psychic or any of the satanic priests mentioned above. They tell him his life history and the reason for his problem. They ask him to bring some money and they do some rituals for him so that his problems can be solved. Most people in this kind of scenario are ignorant of spiritual warfare. Most people are easily deceived by the psychic’s ability to reveal the things only Mr. A knows about. They are impressed and they think this man must be gifted by God. The truth is that the psychic uses various medium in communicating with familiar (demonic) spirit to get information about Mr. A. The problem with visiting such demonic places is that when you

&

N

A

T

I

O

do, you automatically open the door of your life to Satan. At that point, demonic spirits are given legal right to come into your life. The psychic, Babalawo, voodoo priest, obeah priest and Santeria priest don’t solve problems. What they do is move your problem from one area of your life to another. So if the problem is with your health, they will move it from your health to your finances. As far as you know, the health problem is solved. But a few weeks later, you will visit the priest again for your financial problem. So it goes on and on like that and you keep giving them your money. Another thing you need to be careful of is when psychics, Babalawos, Voodoo priests, Obeah priests and Santeria priests pretend to be Christian Ministers. They advertised themselves as Reverends or ordained ministers. Some even have a church. They combine their rituals with the Bible. They mention Jesus in their prayer. Some wear white garments. Some burn candles and incenses to do their rituals. They sell their demonic oils and soap. They offer to bath you

N

W

I

D

E

to remove your problems. To make it deceiving, they ask you to read the book of psalms in addition to the rituals they do. Since they read the bible, most people are easily deceived. Some of them are on radio and TV. The only solution to your problems is Jesus Christ. If they have given you something to wear for protection, please throw them away. Anything you depend on for protection other than the name of Jesus is purely satanic and it will continue to bring bad luck into your life. Besides, as long as you keep the things they gave you in your possession, demonic spirits have a legal right to come in to your life and home. Haven’t you been deceived enough? Haven’t you suffered enough? Haven’t they taken enough of your money? There is only one way out of your problem: Jesus Christ. Come to The LifeZone Church and we will pray for you free of charge. Pastor Femi holds deliverance and spiritual warfare services every week in Jamaica and Saint Albans. For more information or for prayer, please call 718-787-5268.

The event kicks of on Friday, August 6 with a welcome networking session, and later – one of the best Gospel music showcases ever! On Saturday, August 7, it’s the awards ceremony where trophies will be handed out to some of the best artists around in 22 categories including Holy hip hop, Reggae, Urban Contemporary and traditional Gospel…. cert that will feature more awesome talents, and will be held at Greater St. Matthews Baptist Church – 14919 South Main Street also in the city of Houston. In light of the economy, it is extremely important to uplift the hearts of not just the artists who sometimes spend their life’s savings on their music, but also everyone else who maybe going through. The ESMA will not only allow you to forget about your troubles for a few days; it will serve as a morale booster for all who will be in attendance, it will be a celebration of God’s goodness and how he has kept us all, including En Sound Entertainment in these difficult times. It’s another affirmation of what can be accomplished when you believe in your dreams, dismiss the negativity and stick to God and your calling. The 2010 En Sound Music Awards and Conference promises to draw a huge gathering in the city of Houston and features some of the best independent talents you will ever hear anywhere.

INDEPENDENT GOSPEL ARTISTS TO CONVERGE ON THE CITY HOUSTON, TEXAS IN HUGE NUMBERS After taking a two-year hiatus to regroup and refocus, the En Sound Music Awards and Conference (ESMAC) is back bigger and stronger! This event will be held at The Power Center – 12401 South Post oak Road in the city of Houston, TX on August, 6-8. The En Sound music awards was started in 2006 by independent Gospel recording artists and En Sound Entertainment’s Founder & CEO, Delroy Souden to recognize independent Christian artists – who are often ignored by other awards shows that cater to major-label artists. The independent gospel artist, who also founded the En Sound online radio network, came up with the awards concept and in 2006 and bankrolled the event himself. In commemoration of his company’s 10th Anniversary, Souden, who had no intentions of putting on the event ever again, after much prayer and the public’s inquiries into whether the event would return, decided that the only way to celebrate was to honor once again, the artists he has been serving for a decade. “I had reached a point where I wanted

Family of Christ Annual Convention

Evangelist Maxine Johnson, Pastor of Miracle Worship Center

Bishop Michael A. Frith

E

vangelist Maxine Johnson, Pastor of Miracle Worship Center on Thursday June 10th had many people reflecting on their way of living as she spoke on the topic "What is love", at the Annual Convention of Family of Christ Church of God Ministries Inc; which is located at 1448 Ferris Place in the Bronx where Dr Michael A Frith is Pastor and Overseer. Evangelist Johnson selected scripture was 1John 4 verse 7. The question, "What is love?" is being asked casually many times but Evangelist Johnson by the movement of the Holy Spirit enforced these three words into the hearts of the people bringing believers and unbelievers to their knees. The Evangelist did not show sympathy to those on the pulpit or in the pew, as her voice echoed across the congregation challenging everyone to abide in love. How can you say that you are abiding in God if you

fail to show mercy and not have compassion. The Evangelist went on to say that there are no separation in the body of Christ and stated that she has been saddened by the way many in the churches are operating; for there are many who are prophesy and speaking in tongues but yet have no love. She went on to say that we allow the Spirit of jealousy to creep into the church and that the love of many have waxed cold. Pastor Johnson told the congregation that to abide in God's love means to be our brothers keeper and have a heart of forgiveness. She made mention of the Apostle Paul in Romans 8 verse 35; when he said "who shall separate us from the love of God." As she continued she said that those who were speaking against their leaders should ask forgiveness and repent; people did not hesitate to run to the altar. It was truly a night of truth, blessings, and deliverance as many visiting Pastors joined in to assist in

The year 1972 marked the birth of the New Greater Bethel Ministries and the Pastorship of John Haywood Boyd, Sr., a compassionate and humble businessman whom God called upon and commanded to preach, teach and to lead His flock. Under the divine guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit, the journey began in June of 1972. Pastor Boyd was led by God to erect a small canvas tent on the corner of Linden and Francis Lewis Boulevards in Cambria Heights, New York. In September of the same year, he and his family were led to a small building on the corner of 221st Street and Linden Boulevard in Cambria Heights, New York. There our first church was established and the New Greater Bethel Ministry became a living reality. The church grew in number and spirit. On Easter Sunday, 1975, the “Little Bethel” family acquired the Cambria Heights theater complex including a movie theater, a suite of offices, a poolroom, a liquor store and a construction company. great deal of effort, patience and perseverance, renovations coasting in excess of half a million dollars were accomplished and this complex came to house the New Greater Bethel Ministries’ Main sanctuary, a Recording & Reproduction studio, a modern suite of offices, the Bethel Christian Learning Center (Established in 1979) serving prekindergarten through sixth grade, and the New Greater Bethel Bible Institute. During this same time we had established and maintained a food pantry and soup kitchen that is housed in a separate facility; distributing emergency food and serving hot, wholesome meals to hundreds of homeless daily, our Set Free Prison Ministry, which tends to the spiritual needs of our incarcerated brothers and sisters; a 24-hour prayer line with counselors who are ready to minister day and night to all in need; our Ferndale House Facility, provides care for people who are incapacitated or ill for an indefinite period of time; and a series of radio broadcasts that span the globe, reaching nearly 150 million persons weekly. In 1993 we again expanded our borders to include our new building complex located at 215-32 Jamaica Avenue, Queens Village. Once, again, with great effort, patience and perseverance, renovations costing in excess of 1.5 million dollars were done. This site, once a night club, dance hall and movie theater, now houses our main sanctuary which can hold nearly 1,500 people to the glory of God, our new Christian Literature and Media Center, a state of the art Dig-

In 2002, once again we find ourselves with a familiar problem of being out of space, so the work continues. Today, The New Greater Bethel Ministries is a live, vibrant, dynamic institution dedicated to serving God and the needs of all His people. We serve young or old, needy or satisfied, troubled or serene; we make no distinctions, we reach out to all, because they are His children and we are His servants. Under the leadership of our pastor and through a spirit filled staff of full time professionals and volunteers, we address all types of problems at all levels. We perform a wide array of functions and services ranging from clerical and administrative to all levels of ministerial and technical support. Communication is the key to our ability to respond and provide for the needs of both our members and our community. Throughout his pastoral career, he has dedicated his life fully to this ministry. As a result, many who have been under his tutelage have been blessed by his gift of wisdom and leadership. By promoting the teaching of the gospel and setting Godly examples of Christian character, he continues to make a positive difference to our world and our future.

PIMENTO CARIBBEAN RESTAURANT

The Pimento Caribbean Restaurant was established in the year of 2007. Mr. James who owns and operates the business said that it was by an accident that he started the restaurant; he also stated that he had no vision of owning a restaurant but believed in himself as being a good business man and took the opportunity when it was available. Although Mr. James is from the island of Jamaica he caters to a wide Caribbean community which also includes Spanish. Mr. James said that one of his every day effort is to make sure that his customers gets good quality service, good quality food, enjoy a comfortable atmosphere and to provide his customers with reasonable prices. The Pimento Restaurant has a team of seven workers who are very courteous and believes that the customers come first. The owner is now branching into catering, using his white gloves service to cater at special events. Interestingly, there are some of the islands native foods that can be found at the Pimento Restaurant such as Fugi know as turn cornmeal, Blue Draws which is a native Caribbean favorite and also for the Spanish is the Arroz-Pon- Polow. Some other fancy recipes from Pimento Restaurant are spinach rolls, coconut shrimps, coconut plantain

and many more. One of Pimento’s regular customer Mr. Neptune says that he enjoys going there to get his favorite soup. Mr. James mentioned that very soon the restaurant will be serving a slice of cornbread or banana bread with meals. He cares about the needs of the people and does not waste food but instead he gives whatever food they do not need to churches. There will be a website launch and customer appreciation day on the 7th of July; where everyone will be treated to food samples, music and other entertainments. Several dignitaries are also slated to attend. Delivery service is available to customers who wish to order by phone and very soon they will be able to order on-line. Mr. James takes pride in his business and believes his customers come first. He likes to talk to his customers daily to get their views and to make sure that they are satisfied. At the Pimento Restaurant parking is available and service is dependable. They are open from 6:30 am until 10pm and are available for catering throughout the tri-state area. LOSE 15LBS IN JUST 10 By Victor Miller

Why now is the perfect time to start?

“August is the ideal month to complete a rawfood detox plan since supermarket are overflowing with what you need to succeed: with a huge variety of delicious fruit and vegetables,” says nutrition researcher Eric Plasker, author of The 100 year lifestyle (Adams Media, 2007). “And the bountiful produce that’s available right now is seasonal, so it’s at its enzyme-rich, nutrient-dense peak.” What’s more, Tufts University research suggests that midsummer’s ample sunshine significantly increases the body’s production of vitamin D and serotonin. These key compounds stabilize blood sugar, reduce appetite and dampen carb cravings by as much as 81 percent, making it far easier to stick to a healthy eating plan. To begin healing your body and shedding weight fast—up to 15 pounds in the first 10 days—enjoy a diet that contains a least 70 percent raw foods, including unlimited fruit, vegetables, nuts, sprouts, and seeds that haven’t been heated above enzyme denaturing 106 degrees F. “You can eat as much you’d like, whenever you’d like,” says nutrition researcher Susan Schenck. “You won’t be hungry, yet losing weight will be a breeze.”

Your slim-quick strategies Choose organics for these produce picks Organic peaches, berries, peppers, and spinach contain 80 percent fewer pesticides and up to50 percent more enzymes and nutrients than conventionally farmed produce, report researchers at the university of Stirling in the United Kingdom. But it’s fine to skip organic with produce that you intend to peel. Enjoy fruits in the morning The body’s ability to flush trapped fluid and toxins and metabolize stored fat peaks between 6 A.M and noon, according to researchers at the Stanford School of Medicine. “That makes morning the ideal time to fill up on easy-to-digest fruits.” says Plasker. “You’ll maximize your intake of the enzymes needed to perform fat burning biochemical processes, and you won’t slow your detoxification with foods

DAYS!

that are hard to digest.

Follow the “20 chews” rule Salvia is full of digestive enzymes, such as lingual lipase (which breaks down fat) and ptyalin (which converts insoluble starches into simple sugars). “Chewing thoroughly gives these enzymes time to efficiently do their job.” Says holistic healer Michael B. Finkelstein, M.D. “This significantly reduces the strain on the liver and pancreas since fewer digestive enzymes need to be recruited to break down and absorb that food in the gut.” ONE CAUTION: DO THIS TO KEEP ENERGY HIGH Supplement with vitamin B12, which cuts the risk of fatigue in half by increasing the liver’s ability to convert food into energy, according to research in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine. That’s key during the first 10 days of a raw-food plan, when up to 55 percent of women feel draggy due to rapid detoxification. “A raw-food diet is lacking B12, which is found mainly in meat, dairy and eggs,” says Schenck. “And B12 supplements and destroyed by stomach acid, so taking a sublingual tablet daily is the best way to maintain energy levels fast.” Try: The Vitamin Shoppe B-12 sublingual 1,000 mcg ($8 for 100 lozenges, at VitaminShoppe.com) DAY 10 AND BEYOND “To keep slimming at a rapid rate, it’s healthy to continue eating raw for as long as you’d like.” says Dr. Finkelstein. Indeed, raw- food dieters lose up to 100 months. And when you are ready to ease up on the diet, gradually add back 1 oz. of cooked lean protein or whole grains daily, until your diet is 50 percent raw. “Also, consider taking an enzymes supplement, which can prevent deficiencies from sneaking up again.” Suggest Ellen W. Cutler, author of MicroMiracles: Discover the Healing Power of Enzymes (Rodale, 2005). One with a five-star customer review: NSI Ultra Enzymes Complex ($19 for 200 capsules, at Vitacost.com)

Under Pressure With Test Score Results

By Veronica Lyle Educators in various schools have anxiously awaited the results of the achievement tests for ELA and Math. For the principal and assistant principal, high scores could buoy their careers at a time when success is increasingly measured by such tests. For some teachers, the rewards are more tangible: a bonus of $2,850, and still for other teachers, this means that their professional reputation is at stake. However, when the results are scrutinized some seem

too good to be true as in the case of an investigation by the Galena Park Independent School District, the principal, assistant principal and three teachers resigned May 24 in a scandal over test tampering in 2009. The district said the educators had distributed a detailed study guide after stealing a look at the state science test by “tubing” it — squeezing a test booklet, without breaking its paper seal, to form an open tube so that questions inside could be seen and used in the guide. The district invalidated students’ scores. Of all the forms of academic cheating, none may be as startling as educators tampering with children’s standardized tests. But investigations in Georgia, Indiana, Massachusetts, Nevada, Virginia and elsewhere this year have pointed to cheating by educators. Experts say the phenomenon is increasing as the stakes over standardized testing ratchet higher — including, most recently, taking students progress on tests into consideration of teacher performance and ratings. Colorado passed a sweeping law last month making teachers’ tenure dependent on test results, and nearly a dozen other states have introduced plans to evaluate teachers partly on scores. Many school districts already link

teachers’ bonuses to student improvement on state assessments. Houston decided this year to use the data to identify experienced teachers for dismissal, and New York City will use it to make tenure decisions on novice teachers. The federal No Child Left Behind law is a further source of pressure. Like a high jump bar set intentionally low in the beginning, the law — which mandates that public schools bring all students up to grade level in reading and math by 2014 — was easy to satisfy early on. But the bar is notched higher annually, and the penalties for schools that fail to get over it also rise: teachers and administrators can lose jobs and see their schools taken over. It is no wonder that educators feel that their schools’ reputation, their social well-being and their livelihood are at stake. While the concern grows among honest teachers who have worked hard to get their students on grave level and are still not meeting the mandate of the AYP (Yearly Annual Progress), this is a good opportunity to get the “dead beat” teachers on track. The honest hard-working teachers will remain just that while the proverbial “dead beats” will continue to smear this noble profession.

In Georgia, the state school board ordered investigations of 191 schools in February after an analysis of the 2009 reading and math tests suggested that educators had erased students’ answers and penciled in correct responses. Computer scanners detected the erasures, and classrooms in which wrong-to-right erasures were far outside the statistical norm were flagged as suspicious. The Georgia scandal is the most far-reaching in the country. It has already led to the referral of 11 teachers and administrators to a state agency with the power to revoke their licenses. More disciplinary referrals, including from a dozen Atlanta schools, are expected. To alleviate this monumental problem, there must be a refocusing education away from high-stakes testing because of the distorted incentives it introduces for teachers. “When you add in performance pay and your evaluation could possibly be predicated on how well your kids do testing-wise, it’s just an enormous amount of pressure. There is no excuse for doing what was done by these professionals, but I believe this problem is going to intensify before it gets better.”

HEALTH HYPERTENSION

By Morrine Foster-Huey, PA-S. Blood pressure is the pressure of the blood against the walls of the arteries. This is produced by two forces: one is the pressure created by the heart as it pumps blood through the arteries into the circulatory system and the other is created by the resistance of the arteries against the flow of the blood. Blood pressure measurement is generally written as a fraction. The numerator is the Systolic blood pressure, which is the pressure, created as the heart pumps blood into the circulatory system and the denominator is the Diastolic pressure created when the heart relaxes between beats. Therefore 120/80 –120 is the Systolic pressure (Numerator) and 80 is the Diastolic (denominator) Based on the JNC-7 (Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evalu-

H

O

M

E

&

ation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure 7th report), normal blood pressure should be a Systolic less than 120mmHg and a Diastolic of less than 80mmHg. High blood Pressure (Hypertension) is diagnosed when the systolic blood pressure is consistently elevated above 140mmHg and the Diastolic is consistently above 90mmHg. A single episode is not sufficient to provide the diagnosis of Hypertension. Hypertension is a major risk factor in the development of Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular diseases and renal diseases. Based on the results of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) approximately 58.4 million individuals living in the United States have hypertension. In the United States, heart disease is the number one leading cause of death and stroke is the third. According to the Center for Disease Control, Hypertension was listed as a leading or contributing cause of death for 326,000 Americans in 2006. The report also states that in 2010 hypertension will cost the United States $76.6 billion in health care services, medication and missed days at work. African Americans develop hypertension more often and at an earlier age than people of other ethnicity do. Within the African American race, women are more prone to develop hypertension than men are. The last report from the CDC indicated that 44.1% women as compared to 42.2% male develop hypertension in the African American communities. Hypertension may be primary or secondary. Primary or Essential Hypertension is used to describe 95% of all cases with no identifiable cause of hypertension. In this situation, the causative factors are generally

N

A

T

I

O

N

complex interactions between multiple genetics and environmental factors. However as systems improve to detection, the ability to determine the causes will help in reducing the percentage of primary hypertension. Approximately 5% of people with hypertension have readily identifiable causes that are recognized during the physical examination, history and routine laboratory schedules. Hypertension is generally asymptomatic, until complications develop in target organs such as the heart, kidneys and eyes and brain. Some complications include dizziness, flushed facies, headache, fatigue and epistaxis. Severe hypertension can cause severe cardiovascular, neurological, renal and retinal symptoms. The higher the blood pressure the greater or more severe the effect on the abovementioned organs. Primary hypertension has no cure, but some of the causes of secondary hypertension can be corrected. Recommendation include lifestyle changes such as weight loss, regular aerobic exercise, smoking cessation, increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables in the diet, reducing saturated and total fat content of the diet and reducing salt intake. Drugs are also used in the treatment of hypertension. These include diuretics such as Hydrochlorothiazide and Furosemide, Betablockers such as Propranolol and Metoprolol, Ace Inhibitors such as Captopril, Calcium Channel Blockers such as Verapamil and combinations of different classes of medication. It is of extreme importance that as a community we become more aware of the risk factors that are a part of our lives, whether they are cultural or newly adapted. It is essential that we try to reduce or eliminate these risk factors to aid in the reduction

of the morbidity and mortality related to this disease state. Get your blood pressure checked regularly, exercise, eat healthy, reduce intake of alcohol and discontinue smoking. If you have been diagnosed with hypertension, ensure that you are complaint in taking medication and contact your doctor if there are any adverse side effects. IMPRISONED, But Not Captive By Betty-ann Berazzah

“Sinned by betraying innocent blood” Matthew 27:4 Psalm 146:7 Who executes justice for the oppressed, Who gives food to the hungry. The LORD gives freedom to the prisoners. It is a very painful and emotional moment to sit in a court room and listen to men and women lie to a jury to put away your loved one. That pain is enormous, heart wrenching and tormenting. But it is even more painful to see your loved one convicted for a crime he or she did not commit. But do not despair, God has sent a word for you, Psalms 46:10 “ Be still, and know that I am God;” My friend, God sees all things, and He does not slumber nor sleep. 1 Corinthia2:5 “that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. Put all your trust and faith in God. When a loved one is incarcerated, lives are disrupted; children face challenges that stem from single parenthood, lacking the stability of both parents and in most cases the bread winner of the home. Wives lose their partners who are supposed to be by their sides during making decisions. A wife now becomes the bread winner, the decision maker and she still has to be the strong pillar for her husband. She has to fill the roles of mother and father, homemaker; she has to be an emotional and physical support for her husband.

A mother who has the heart-breaking task of visiting a child in prison carries unspoken words. It is a sensitive moment every time one has to visit a prison facility to spend time with a loved one. These are just some of the aspects that should be considered by men and women of this society, before we take on the responsibility in the timely process of deciding if a man or woman is guilty or not guilty. It could be you sitting in the defense chair. Wouldn’t you want a fair chance. Matthew 27:4 saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” Friends, don’t be the one to sin by betraying innocent blood. But God gave us promises to hold on to in His word. Isaiah 42:6-7 “ I, the LORD, have called You in righteousness, And will hold Your hand; I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people, As a light to the Gentiles, To open blind eyes,, To bring out prisoners from the prison, Those who sit in darkness from the prison house. Psalm 142:7 Bring my soul out of prison, That I may praise Your name; The righteous shall surround me, For You shall deal bountifully with me.” Hold fast to the promises of God, His promises never fails; I know that He is a God that said He opens prison doors. God is our

strength in whom we will trust (Psalms 18:2). He is the God that will light our lam; He will enlighten our darkness; for b Him we can run against a troop; for by Him we can leap over a wall. God’s way is Perfect; His word is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him. (Psalms 18 28-30) It is God who arms us with strength and ways and makes our ways perfect; and makes our feet like the feet of a deer; and sets us on high places.( Psalms 18:31-33) If you feel in your heart, you need Jesus Christ to come in and help you at this time of your life, and you want to give your life to Jesus so He can be the head of your life, guide you and help you through every situation and trial that you are facing, say this pray to Jesus with all your heart: Dear Jesus,.... I come to you in prayer asking for the forgiveness of my Sins. I confess with my mouth and believe with my heart that Jesus is my Lord and Savior, he died on the Cross at Calvary that I might be forgiven and have Eternal Life in the Kingdom of Heaven. I believe that Jesus rose from the dead, and I ask you right now to come in to my life and be my personal Lord and Savior.

I repent of my Sins and will Worship you all the day's of my Life!. Because your word is truth, I confess with my mouth that I am Born Again and Cleansed by the Blood of Jesus! In Jesus Name, Amen. If you read this Prayer and truely believe the words as you prayed them, we thank God for you as you have been saved and your name will appear in the “Lambs Book Of Life” Romans: 10 9-10-13 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be Saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto Salvation. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be Saved...
