GOSPEL ARTIST OF THE MONTH

Cleve ‘Stichie’ Laing H

e is a gifted lyrical genius, with a superb and unique style, combined with a powerful delivery that made his music stand up to the harshest critic. Cleve ‘Stichie’ Laing has been transformed from being one of dancehall’s most acclaimed icons into the love child of gospel, and his amazing abilities only get better by every minute. Ordained a minister of the Gospel, a Psalmist and a born-again kingdom citizen, his repertoire is totally dedicated to all things Christ-like. Sticvhie, like the great characters of the bible, had his name changed after conversion by doing away with the ‘Lieutenant’ part of his moniker, which was a throwback to the days when he was king of the dancehall as ‘Lt. Stichie, the Governor’ There is only one General in the Army of God, the Lord, Jesus Christ, and he is reverenced and worshipped by Stichie. He is a former high school teacher who graduated from G.C. Foster College of physical Education and Sports. He was destined to teach va. Tluable lessons in the school of life. Stichie’s conversion was the culmination of two years spent in quiet reflection on his life’s purpose, and contemplating eternity shortly after the death of his

mother. Following a near-death car crash on the way to perform at Reggae Sumfest in August 1997, he was in receipt of a Gideon new testament Bible from a Canadian Missionary. That very night on his versatility and creativityreturning to his hotel, Stichie read the bible, prayed, asked for forgiveness of his sins, and accepted Jesus Christ as his savior. Now comfortably preaching and teaching the gospel, Stichie since his baptism on December 14, 1997 has witnessed the mighty power of god in his career and in every other area of his life; even his boundaries have been enlarged. Inspired by the Lord, and motivated by his spiritual father Dr. Myles Munroe, Stichie has once again demonstrated his versatility and creativity as an author. Stichie and his wife Sophia worship with the family of God Mt. Carmel New Life Church of God in Spanish Town, Jamaica. Occasionally, Stichie would preach the word of God when he is not on tour. Totally consumed by the Gospel, Stichie feels it vital to surround himself with musicians and singers who are of the same vision; therefore all his band members are \Ambassadors for Christ. Easily and undoubtedly one of the most sought after gospel artist in the genre of reggae and dancehall, Stichie has a reputation for high energy, electrifying performance, excellent stage craft and an effective kingdom ministry, which he has used to reap thousand s of souls for the kingdom of God. Since the year 2000, he has been touring as a headliner and speaker; performing and ministering at gospel concerts, crusades, conferences, street meetings, church services, and various music festivals in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Wales, Poland, Switzerland, Ger-

many, Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, Jamaica, and many other Caribbean islands. Although not one to revel in awards and take any praise unto himself, nevertheless, the excellence of this Bond Servant and Ambassador for Christ has been recognized nationally and internationally since the release of his Reggae/Dancehall gospel album ‘Real Power’, by various awarding bodies. Among them is the Jamaican Federation of Musicians (JFM), which awarded Stichie the Best Gospel Artist in 2001; the Caribbean Gospel Music Awards (Marlin) – Most Outstanding Reggae Vocalist of the Year; Song of the Year – ‘Solid Rock’, and Most Outstanding Packaging; The Canadian Caribbean Gospel Award for Top Gospel Album in 2002 and again the J.F.M., also in 2002 for the Number One Gospel Artist in Jamaica and the Caribbean; the French International Caribbean Awards – Top Gospel Artist 2003; Reggae / Soca Music, Song of the Year 2004 – ‘Fast & Pray’; The Caribbean Gospel Music Awards, New York, for the Caribbean Song of the Year International 2005- ‘Gospel Reggae’, from his second album ‘Kingdom Ambassador’, and Original song International 2005, ‘Gospel reggae’. Maja Awards, Jamaica, 2006saw Stichie receiving two awards namely: The Best Gospel Deejay of the Year, and Long Service and Dedication to the Gospel Music Industry. Stichie proclaims that one of the main concerns is to live a life according to the principles of the kingdom that will be an example to others, especially his former neighbors in the garrisons of the inner city communities where he grew up and his fellow dancehall colleagues. This trendsetter continues to set a blistering pace and since then he has raised the bar in Reggae/Dancehall Gospel Music ten feet higher with his latest release “Real

Life Story’. This production brings an offering of praise and worship, powered by the Holy Spirit, specially designed to reach the unreachable, conquer the invincible, giving hope to the hopeless and to rescue those who are lost/. The title track ‘Real Life Story’ is a personal testimony of Stichie’s life story as a Youth growing up in the inner-city. The album has seventeen pulsating Reggae/Dancehall bullets aimed at penetrating the kingdom of darkness empowering those in the Body of Christ. ‘Real Life Story’ addresses real life issues and offers spiritual and practical solutions with rewarding results. The album also contains a lyrical book on one side of the fold out and a military picture of Stichie on the other side as a poster. Scripture references for each song have also been embedded on the CD as a digital read out as well as on the fold out of the insert. The presentation and concept of the packaging of the compact disc comprises a prelude and an interlude.. Included in the seventeen songs there is also a hidden accapella version of ‘Real Life Story’ at the very end of the CD. ‘Real Life Story’ is another project for Stichie’s independent label – Drum & Bass Music. Producers and Engineers who have credits on the CD include the Grammy Award Winners Barry O’Hare, Michael Fuller, Shane Brown, Delroy “Fatta” Pottinger, and others such as Colin ‘Bulby’ York, Roland ‘Rollie McDermott, and Don McDowell, in addition to Reggae’s number one producer, Bobby ’Digital’ Dixon. Stichie has also pioneered a completely new path in the history of Reggae Music, by becoming the first Dancehall Artist to write a book entitled “The power of Determination”, his autobiography for global distribution.

By Bishop Gregory A. Foster

T

oday I would like to encourage you to focus on the things that are above, that is, the spiritual things of God, and not on the things of the earth, which are natural and transitory. This timeless message for the saints reminds us that our hearts and affections must be totally devoted to God, because it is impossible to love and serve two masters, for either you will love the one and hate the other. Our heart’s desire must be for God’s Kingdom and His righteousness, but in order for us to fulfill this desire we must be risen with Christ and renewed in our understanding. The following are reflections on Bishop Foster’s teachings, which focused on the conditions of the heart and the mind.

J

oy Houston was born in Whitby, in the parish of Manchester, Jamaica West Indies. She is the eldest of eight siblings and the wife of assistant Pastor Livingston Houston for the past 31 years. They both attend the Triumphant Church of God, 7 Sutter Avenue in Brooklyn, NY. She is the mother of three adorable daughters: Jaime, Candace, and Briana. Her involvement with singing started at the age of ten, when she sang in her local church at an event they were having. Everyone seemed elated and impressed that she sang so beautifully. She was informed that one lady in particular wanted to know who she was; coincidentally, she later became her daughter-in-law. The choir director of her local assembly realized that she had talent, and wanted her to work on it. He then asked her mother if she would allow her to practice with him. Without any hesitation, her mother agreed. The choir director then would go to her home, and they would practice together. Singing was her thing, and she would sing any kind of lyric to keep her voice tuned. She was later asked to join the Youth Choir, where practice was rigid. Her singing caused a change in her life, and she began to do things differently. A great joy was visible whenever she would perform at a concert or sing gospel songs. She received the gift of God, being saved through faith, and singing the good old songs of Zion. The choir launched out, and was later named The Manchester Youth Choir. They travelled all over the country to different parishes to sing and take part in competitions, where she was one of the soloists. The Manchester Youth Choir would win in almost every competition. Sis. Houston migrated to New York in the early 70’s, where she became a member of the Triumphant Church of God in Brooklyn, where she continued to sing. She joined the choir, and at one point, she was the Assistant Choir Director. She had always had the desire to do a recording, but did not know how to proceed. So after consulting with her husband who gave her much encouragement, she spoke with her pastor who directed her to someone who was already in the music ministry. This individual showed her the necessary steps to take, and the result was the release of her first CD entitled ‘Redeemed’. Many people who heard this CD stated that the songs are a blessing. Sis. Houston has not only ministered in the tri-state area, but in England, Canada, and Jamaica. She also sang in many local churches at regular services, concerts and conventions. She has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with great legends such as Hopeton Lewis, Shelly Thunder, Evangelist Grace Mathis, Bro. Marlon Anderson (Bro. Paul), Wayne Johnson, and others. She received an award from the Gil and Pat Bailey Gospel Awards in the category of New Voices, in May 2009. She is now working on her second CD.

The Heart The Mind The Service

JOY HOUSTON

4

H

The Heart Matthew6:21 – “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also”. Heart as is used in this verse represents the center of all physical and spiritual life. Every

thought, desire, passion, emotion, affection, will, character, and intellect of man, they are contained in this word heart. Treasure refers to the actual place where you keep valuables and riches, for example, like a treasury, storehouse or even casket. What Jesus seems to be indicating here is that the place that contains all that is good and precious to you, is the place where your heart is. Do you know what place that is in your life? Is your house, car, job, family, friends more precious to you than God? Do you spend more time taking care of these things than seeking the things of God? These are some hard questions, but answers to which separate the spiritual Christian from the carnal saint. It’s a heart change.

The Mind Colossians 3:1-2 – “If then ye be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sits on the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth”. Paul’s letter to the Colossian church emphasizes the need for Christians to make every effort to seek out, direct and focus their attention and understanding on the things of God. The context of these scripture verses clearly shows that Paul expects every believer to put to death any deeds or thoughts that are carnal, earthly, and fleshly, and to adopt and put on the mind of Jesus Christ. What is important to note in this particular scripture is that Paul is making this demand based on the fact that we have been risen and re-

A Prayer For All

newed in Jesus Christ, without which it would be impossible to live right. Now that Jesus Christ has given us the power through His Holy Spirit to mind the things of God, we have to take it upon ourselves to train and discipline our minds and bodies to think like Christ, to do like Christ, and to be like Christ. In other words we must offer our whole selves to God. One full proof strategy that Paul mentions is putting off the old things of the flesh, and putting on of the new spirit in Christ Jesus. It’s a mind change.

The Service Luke 16:13 – “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon”. With all hearts and minds renewed in Christ, the desire to serve earthly treasures, money and anything that takes our focus away from God decreases. As long as we live on this earth we will have to struggle with the duality of our nature, which seeks to do good and bad. However, with the help and comfort of the Holy Spirit we can defeat all masters that compete against the sovereignty and dominion of God. We cannot fool ourselves to think that we can love money and God. The scriptures state clearly that the love of money, riches and treasures is the root of all evil. Our service must instead be rich toward God, and poor toward the world. It’s a service change.

Heavenly Father, I come to thee in the name of Jesus. I pray for the outpouring of your Holy Spirit to come unto all flesh. Your words are forever pure; therefore, I love your word. The entrance and unfolding of your words give life. Look down upon me, be merciful unto me, and show me thy favor. Establish my steps and direct them by your words. Hear my voice according to your steadfast love. O Lord, quicken me and give life according to your righteous decree. Lord, I cry with my whole heart. Hear me so that I may keep your testimonies - by Hearing, Receiving, Loving, and Obeying them.

Thank you, Father, for hearing and answering. My tongue shall sing praises for the fulfillment of your word. In Jesus Name, AMEN. By The Rt. Hon. Rev. Dr. Rabbi Keith Elijah Thompson REPEAT FAITHFULLY

Marriage

By Betty-ann Berazzah

Love 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (New King James Version) Love suffers long and is kind; Love does not envy; Love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 Does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; Does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; Bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (New International Version) Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

Beloved brothers and sister, I encourage all to read this scripture, meditate on it and apply it to your marriage. We need to live this scripture in our marriage daily. Love is Not a feeling; Love Is An Act. Love sometimes requires us to make sacrifices through long suffering for our marriage and for our partners to preserve our marriage and for the happiness of our marriage. Do not hesitate to go the extra mile for your partner. In this scripture, God is saying that it is okay to suffer, and to suffer long Is to Love. Be Kind to your partner at all times, even when he/she is not deserving of it. Be not envious of your partner when good things happens for him/her, and not for you; be happy for your partner, you are both one in flesh, the word of God said, Genesis 2:24. Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Love does not allow you to be boastful to your partner of how much more you have achieved that your partner may not have ,or how well you can do things better than they can. Love is sharing; about denying oneself and helping each other up, every time. Love does not say hurtful words to your partner for revenge, Love does not let anger control your relationship with your partner. Love does not do evil acts to the one that we are suppose to love till ‘death do you part.’ Love encourages, it builds each other up; Love says “I am sorry” as much as is needed. The words,” I am sorry” are powerful words in any relationship, it is life changing, situation changing words, which we all should use to empower our relationships. A good soldier protects their fellow soldiers, and so a good partner, always protect each other. The bible said, “two shall become one”, this indicates that we should do nothing to bring hurt or harm to

yourself, your partner is a part of you, because two became one when God brought you together. You first have to trust yourself before anyone can trust you; a good marriage needs trust. Your partner needs a inner peace about your relationship and marriage, that allow them to know, ‘I can look away and know that you would do nothing to harm me, or our relationship.’ Trust in a marriage can make “The Difference”. When times get rough, and your marriage seems like it may fall apart, search deep and far, and let Love strengthen you to persevere to succeed at your marriage. Matthew 24:13 “But he who endures to the end shall be saved. I know a man that loved us all, so much that he allowed His only Son to die for us. That is God’s great love. We were first loved by God, who created us out of love, we all were born with Love in our heart and soul, but our love is challenged by the enemy who roams the earth to destroy the love that God placed in us from the beginning of the earth’s creation. Romans 5:5 “because the love of God shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.’ We are over comers by Christ, as we have overcomed the works of the enemy, and so we have to work hard and persevere to let this Love inside of us rise above and beyond and spread throughout the world; we were born out of Love, God is Love, and we were created by God, so we are Love . Proverbs 17:17 (New King James Version) A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity. Ecclesiastes 9:9 (New King James Version) Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of your vain life which He has given you under the sun, all your days of vanity; for that is your portion in life, and in the labor which you perform under the sun. 1 Corinthians 16:14 (New King James Version) Let all that you do be done with love. 1 Peter 4:8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 1 John 4:9-12

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Colossians 3:12-17 Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Let Love turn Anger into Joy, Sadness Into Happiness; Discouragement into Excitement; Loneliness into Companionship. Ask God He Will Do it for you. LEGEND OF LEGENDS

Dorothy Norwood Biography

B

orn in Atlanta, Georgia, Dorothy began singing and touring with her family at the age of eight. In 1956, she moved to Chicago, Illinois, and was soon singing with such notables as the great Mahalia Jackson, the world renowned Caravans, and the incomparable Reverend James Cleveland. Evangelist Norwood launched her solo career in 1964 and recorded her first album Johnny and Jesus on Savoy Records. It brought her national attention and was certified Gold. She followed it up with the stirring Denied Mother, which also went Gold, and earned her the title "World's Greatest Storyteller". In her over 36 years in the Gospel Music Industry, Dorothy has recorded over 40 albums, five of which were certified GOLD. She has also received numerous awards and citations, including six Grammy nominations. As renowned as she is in America, she is just as large in Europe. She has performed in Germany, France, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, and England. Believing that "if the mountain won't come to you, then you must go to the mountain‌" Dorothy agreed to do a 30 state American tour with Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones in 1972.

She was able to spread the Gospel in a mission field that was virtually closed to gospel artists. In February 1991, Evangelist Norwood signed with Malaco Records and recorded Live with the Northern California GMWA Mass Choir. It was an immediate hit, reaching the Number 1 position on Billboard's Top Forty after only 7 weeks. Her second project earned a Stellar Award nomination as well as a Grammy Award nomination. Every album released since, has been nothing short of miraculous, propelling Dorothy further into the ranks of greatness. Her latest album, released October 2007, is entitled No Request. This offering is a memorable, powerful release recorded "Live" in Jackson, Mississippi with the internationally renowned Mississippi Mass Choir. Ms. Norwood's talents are many; not only is she the vocalist we all know and love, she is a songwriter and very sought after producer. Whether she is with a choir, or her own group, this Gospel Storyteller has an amazing capacity to offer her gifts to God in a most refreshing manner. Because of this, she has become one of the most sought after Gospel artists of today.

Gabriel Laine Amidst the trauma inflicted from devastation, pain, and suffering, there are glimmers of hope for the island of Haiti. From the tender age of eleven, Gabriel Laine had a burning desire to help people. He was so passionate about this somewhat divine inspiration, that his desire superseded the constraints which he experienced having been born in Haiti. Onlookers at this man were faced with one question, “How could he help others when he needed help himself?” As he grew older, Mr. Laine’s love for God and for his people led him to enroll in Seminary school. He fondly remembers that every time he received his meals, he would often ask for extra so that he could give to the hungry of the town

he lived in. Each time he asked, he would be given at least five boxes of milk, and he would take them to the town to distribute. At that time, he also formed a group of apostolic youth, and engaged them in community service, volunteer and charity work. In 1983 he migrated to the United States, where although he pursued his own dreams and development, his primary focus was to find ways to help his fellow countrymen. “My people are suffering, and I must do something to help,” he said. In 2005 he had a dream, in which an unknown woman appeared to him, and asked him what he wanted to see himself doing in five years. His response was, “To help my people”. After that encounter, Mr. Laine formed the Caiman Haiti Foundation. The Caiman Haiti Foundation is a non- profit organization that is designated a 501 © 3 status. It is actively pursuing and executing strategies to enhance the lives and well being of the Haitian people. Some of the organization’s goals are: to help alleviate the suffering in Haiti through donations and volunteer services; to promote Intellectual development and the exchange of intellectual ideas among Haitian people in the United States and the Diaspora. These goals amongst others

are the fuel to the fire in Mr. Laine’s heart, the organization and its members. The recent crisis in Haiti is an exclamation point to the many years of continuous pain and suffering and the decline of human dignity being experienced there. The harsh reality is that the world’s compassion will eventually wand, and people will return to their normal routine. But, at the end of the day, it is going to be non-profit organizations like the Caiman Haiti Foundation that will consistently keep giving aid and literally save lives. The word ‘Caiman’ is representative of a time and place where the Haitian people gathered to plan the revolt against their captors in response to the abuse and injustice that they were subjected to. After a fact finding mission to Haiti, Mr. Laine solidified his desire to help his people. He states that one of the harsh realities is that many Haitians go through the period from birth to death, never knowing what the inside of a clinic looks like. The foundation collects clothing, shoes, water, food, non-perishable goods, and financial support to aid the Haitian people.

New Testament Temple Church of God is a bible believing Pentecostal church located at 3356 Seymour Avenue in the Bronx New York. This vibrant ministry is shepherded by Bishop Paul Peart and his lovely wife, Rev. Ingrid Peart. They have been the pastors of this congregation of over 400 people for the past 17 years. Our newest addition to the pastoral staff is Rev. Shawn Walker and his wife Sis. Cameal Walker. They joined the New Testament church family in June of 2009 as the Youth and Children’s pastors; these ministries have flourished under their leadership, especially to the teens. On Friday nights there is Youth prayer at 6pm and Youth fellowship at 7pm. The youth are engaged in fellowship, bible study, performance ministry, topical discussions and much more. During the summer months, they participate in many activities geared to meet the needs of their peer group but with an emphasis on evangelism. This year they will be having their first Youth Conference from July 23 – 25. This promises to be a powerful weekend of peer to peer ministry, workshops,

and a concert One of the sub ministries that meets under the umbrella of the Youth Department are the Performance Ministries, comprised of a mime/drama team, ’Unspoken truth’, and a vocal ensemble, ‘Lighthouse’ The Youth are extremely gifted, and have participated annually in Teen Talent and junior talent competitions sponsored by the Church of God. Upon entering the upper foyer of the church, you will see the many trophies won by our young people. In 2008, our state competition winners were blessed to attend the Church of God’s General Assembly in San Antonio, texas, where they competed against other state champions from the UK, and the West Indies. New Testament Temple sent 3 participants in this state’s contingent, and brought home its first trophy in the category of Male Vocal Solo, second place, won by Christopher Lilley. Pastor Shawn, as he is affectionately called by the youth, continues to execute the vision of the Youth Department. We expect to see great growth and progress in the lives of the children and teens of NTT.

Christopher Lilley was born on October 17, 1991 to Michael and Sherrie lilley in Brooklyn, New York. He sang his first solo with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Children’s Choir at the age of eight. This was the beginning of a beautiful friendship between him and music that lasts to this day. Chris won his first singing competition at the tender age of eleven, and has since competed and won three local competitions, and came in second place at the international level. Christopher’s love of music is very broad; but his greatest passion is classical and gospel music. He was afforded the opportunity to attend Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music, Art, and the Performing Arts; graduating in June of 2009 with a specialized NYSSMA Diploma of Musical Excellence Diploma of Musical Excellence. He was also awarded Excellence in Senior Chorus, Gospel Choir, and Operea Workshop, in which he performed lead roles in the Mikado and the gondoliers; both by Gilbert and Sullivan. In the summer of 2005 Chris joined ‘Songs of Solomon’ an inspirational ensemble dedicated to the advancement of African - American sacred music and the empowerment of minority youths in an urban environment.. Under the direction of Professor Chantel Wright, Chris sang at such venues as the US Open, and the New York Historical society. Chris is currently a freshman at Manhatten School of Music on a partial scholarship studying Vocal Performance under the tutelage of Ms. Joan PatenaudeYarnell. He has had a successful freshman year thus far and looks forward to the many doors that will open as he pursues his dream to sing internationally. Some of Chjris’s other talents include acting, drums, guitar, composing, and is a self taught pianist. The most important aspect of Christopher Lilley’s life is his love for God. And along with his pursuit to become a great opera singer, he ultimately desires to give his greatest gift, his voice, back to God as a minister of Music.

Grace be unto you and peace, from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine, for you all making request with joy, your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now; being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. Father I thank you that I have been delivered from the power of darkness and translated into the kingdom of your dear Son, Jesus. I commit to live free from worry in the name of Jesus, for the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. I humble myself under your mighty hand, that in due time, you may exalt your people. We cast all of our cares, all of our worries, all of our concerns, once and for all on you. You care for us affectionately and care about us watchfully; forever You sustain us. You will never allow the consistently righteous to be moved—made to slip, fall, or fail. Father we

That’s not the way life was meant to be So open your eyes and begin to see God’s love for all humanity. Begin to see: Life’s uncertainty as a doorway to God’s perfect will Life’s obstacles as a stepping stones towards our purpose and destiny Life’s mistakes as a part of our testimony to others Life’s consequences as a building block to our relationship with God Life’s trials as a main ingredient in our faith pie Life’s burdens as motivation to go even further and reach even higher.

Ashley Brimm is sixteen years old, and a junior in high school who has strong aspirations to become a M e d i c a l Lawyer. To achieve that goal, she has set her focus on doing extremely well academically. Thus far, she has achieved the status of being ranked number one on the honor roll, and by the end of her senior year, will have completed twenty college credits. This year alone she has earned seven, and in the last month she accepted the Black Achievement Award. This award is given to African – American students who do exceptionally well in school. For her, this is her seventh time winning this award. She enjoys helping others, and as a result, she tutors at her local library and at her school. Ashley’s other love is music. She has been professionally trained in the clarinet, and has been playing for eight years. For three of those years, she has been a part of the school district’s marching band. During that time, she has found a new interest in several other instruments including the saxophone, and keyboard. She is involved in the school’s drama club, and is currently playing in the school orchestra for the spring musical. As a result of her church foundation and background, Ashley’s lifestyle and beliefs are bible – based. She does her best to be as involved as possible in the youth ministry at her church. delight in you and your perfect will, that which concerns us. We cast down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of You, and we bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Jesus Christ. We lay aside every weight and the sins of worry, which does so easily try to beset us. We run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith. We thank you, Father that you are able to keep that which we have committed unto you. We think on and fix our minds on those things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, praiseworthy and virtuous. We will not let our hearts be troubled. We abide in Your word, and Your word abides in us. Therefore Father, we do not forget what manner of person we were. We are looking into the perfect law of liberty and continue therein, being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the word and thus, blessed in our doing. Thank you Father that we are carefree. We walk in that peace that passes all understanding, in Jesus name: Amen. Reverend Linus Baptiste, Lifestyle Global Prayer Ministries

IS THE DOOR OF YOUR LIFE OPEN TO SATAN? Part 2

Pastor K. Femi Akojenu Here are a list of things that opens the door to the devil. 1. A family background in the occult or false religions. See Exodus 20:1-5 Examples of cults and false religions include: Rosicrucian, Masons, Mormonism, Jehovah’s Witness, Palm Reading, Psychics, Tarot Card Reading, Bush Bath, etc. Whenever you visit the psychic, root workers or spiritual readers, you open the door of your life to their God, Satan. Many people are deceived because the things these psychics or “readers” tell them about themselves are true or come true. They submit to the commands or advice of these people because they think they possess gifts from God. What they don't know is that the devil too has the ability to see. These psychics work hand in hand with familiar or demonic spirit and get information about people from the spirits. Just because someone is able to perform signs and wonders does not mean they are doing it through the power of God. In Exodus 7:11, we see that Pharaoh’s wise men, sorcerers and magicians did some of the miracles that Moses, a servant of God, did with their demonic enchantments. They even operate out of churches. There are many spiritual or “white garment” churches around the City. Some of them worship angels or African deities like Sango, Orisha, Yemoja or Ogun. If you involve yourself with these people and their practices, you open your life to demonic attacks and need deliverance. Every time you go to the devil for protection or anything, he gives you his demonic spirits which manifest themselves in your life as bad luck, curses, night visitors etc. You must repent of your worship of false gods and renounce them. 2. Negative prenatal influences, such as visiting a witch doctor before or while pregnant or even the thought of having an abortion. 3. Pressures in early childhood such as sexual abuse and childhood rivalry. 4. Emotional shock or sustained emotional pressure. For examples witnessing a murder or being in a burning building. 5. Sinful acts or habits. Because of their sin, Ananias and Sapphira opened themselves to be filled with spirits of covetousness, lying and deceit. See Acts 5:3 and John 5:14. 6. Laying on of hands. Just as the Holy Spirit can be imparted through the laying on of hands (Acts 19:6), demonic spirits can be transferred through laying of hands (transference of spirits). You can’t allow just anybody to lay hands on you. It does not matter what their title or position is. You need to test all spirits and make sure they are of God before you allow them to lay hands on you. It is very dangerous going from church to church in search of help. Many people have become possessed and their problem gotten worse because they visit a pastor with “another spirit” not of God. Be careful.

7. Inheritance. Sometimes the source of your problem is not you. Sometimes it is your ancestors. They made a covenant with Satan years ago on your behalf and you are suffering from the result of the agreement. Just like a person can inherit diabetes because it is in their family or gene, a person can inherit curses, hindrances and blockages. There are many people who can’t make headway in life today because of the sins and covenants of their ancestors. The bible makes it clear that God visits the iniquities of the father upon the children to the third and fourth generation. (Exodus 20:5) That means you may be suffering from the sins and evil work that your ancestors have committed 160 years ago. They may have gone to these evil doers to help them conceive a child-you! These acts become destiny changers in your life; the devil does not give anything without demanding a great price in return. Do you really know your ancestors? Do you know what kind of evil and idolatry they were involved in? Like Daniel and Jeremiah (Daniel 9:16), you may need to confess the sins of your ancestors and ask for forgiveness on their behalf so that the curse may be lifted. If they have signed any contract with the devil, you need to break and destroy those covenants. 8. Demonic contact such as playing with Ouija board. 9. Cultural dance, rituals and pagan festivals. Some of these events allow the worship of deities and idol worship. We look at these as being merely cultural and see no harm in participating. You allow your children to dress up for Halloween and other festivals without knowing what doors you are opening. Be careful! 10. Unforgiveness– The failure to forgive caused the unjust steward to be turned over to the “tormentors”. Demon spirits are tormentors. See Matthew 18. 11. Carved objects—some of the African or cultural art work are representation of deities. They usual have residual demonic spirits and powers in them. Many people have noticed strange occurrences when they bring these objects to their home. There is a lot of interest among many African Americans to trace their root to the motherland (Africa). While there is nothing wrong with that itself, the problem is that many embrace everything that comes out of Africa without question. The truth is that some of the things they embrace are demonic and cursed. Not all things about Africa or America are Godly. Be careful. 12. Charms. Good luck charms or charms worn for protection are demonic. Only God can protect. Any other source of protection is demonic and invites demons and curses into your life. 13. Haunted Places. The name alone should make you beware; use caution . 14. Music and Movies and Books—There is a demonic agenda to demonize people, especially children. Some of the movies and music youths listen to are demonic. These mediums are used in a subtle way to introduce children to witchcraft and magic. Books like Harry Porter make it seem alright to dabble into magic and witchcraft. Be careful. This is an excerpt from Pastor Femi’s message on Demonic Doorways, you can purchase the message in its entirety by visiting our online store or calling us to place an order. Bishop Herbert Noelin Scott

H

erbert Noelin Scott was born in Clarendon, Jamaica West Indies and was raised in Birming-

ham, England. His mother, Blanche Scott consistently brought Herbert to church with her. She instilled in him the importance of knowing the Lord as his personal Savior and emphasized the necessity of having a good education. It was during his adolescent years that Herbert recognized the hand of God on his life. At age ten he accepted the Lord as his personal Savior, and was baptized at age 12. Like young Samuel he acknowledged and responded to the call of God, and immediately stepped into his role

with a clear sense of purpose and destiny. At age 15 he was appointed Evangelist of Triumphant Church of God, Aston England under the leadership of Rev. E. Wilks. While attending secondary school his zeal to learn more about God burned stronger in him and propelled him to attend Ebenezer Bible Institute in Lozells Birmingham. His gift and talent for music led him to study at the Trinity College of Music under the leadership of Mr. Harold Wilcox. Upon completion of Secondary School he went on to Aston University to major in Medicine, but the Lord led him to a different career. At age 19 he was appointed Pastor of Triumphant Church of God, Aston Branch. This appointment became a major turning point in his life. At age 20 he migrated to the United States of America, where he worshipped at Triumphant Church of God Howard Ave. Brooklyn. Before his 21st birthday the late Bishop Phillip Burris asked him to serve as the Pastor of the church. Under his leadership the body of Christ grew tremendously, particularly in the area of youth ministry. In 1980 acting on a vision from the Lord he moved on to propagate the Gospel. God’s Master Plan For Your Life

E

S

Part.2

By: Suzette Smith

“The thoughts that I have towards you is of good and not of evil to give you an expected end” (KJV) Jer. 29:11. It is God’s intentions, and divine will for you to seek, and find your purpose in this life. Have you ever wondered, even pondered, what the will of God is for your life? You felt the tug, urgency, a pull within your spirit, and the desire for the next level. However, you were uncertain or unsure, where to begin and how to start. Questions about your purpose here on earth plague you, and your conscience relied on, how do I bring this passion of Christ into fruition? Beloved, don’t be dismayed, uneasy, discontented, frustrated, neither incomplete? God’s question to you is, “Will thou be made whole?” (KJV) Jn. 5:6. God wants to fill every void and emptiness in you by you doing his pleasure. In the midst of your imperfection, God sees you in his master plan. He looks at you as good work that is already finished. “So God created man into his own image, in the image of God created he him. And God blessed them, be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth …” (KJV) Gen. 1:27, 28. Though you may make mistakes, and display imperfections. “It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect” (KJV) Ps. 18:32. Consider the desire, and will to strive which he placed in your heart. The bible declares that, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before you camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee…” (KJV) Jer. 1:5. God selected and orchestrated you for his plan, even before you were thought of. Yes, through lives experiences that brought you turmoil, distress, disappointments, shame, hardship, defame mishap, and devastation. “All things work together for good to them that love the Lord to them who are the called according to his purpose” (KJV) Rom. 8:28. God still chose you to be a valuable asset to his kingdom. God always shows you the ending before the be-

ginning. He won’t fail to reveal the light at the end of the tunnel. However, consider others in the Bible who was called for purpose, such as, Job, David, Esther, Daniel, Ruth, Jeremiah and more. Their stories may have differed, but their battles were for the same cause, they are the “called out.” Take David, “It was good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy (his) stature” (KJV) Ps. 119:71. The father looks beyond your circumstances, and what you have gone through, and how you are doing, and he sees your strength. Every disappointment is a God appointment. He visions his plan, and then he sets the stage for your purpose. He is aware and knows that you are equipped to do what he calls you to do. “But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold” (KJV) Job 23:10. Granted, despise not days of struggle, they are days of favor, because you are a chosen vessel. In this process perhaps, you asked yourself, why me? It is precisely because God has called and chose you. “So the last shall be first, and the first shall be last: for many are called but few chosen.” (KJV) Matt. 20:16. God’s timing is never your timing. It is a process. It takes your cooperation and diligence for his plans to progress in your life. During this stage you may feel weighed down, growing pains, and the modification of the father’s push. His goal is to thrust you where he wants you; in his perfect will. “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye” (KJV) Ps. 32:8. In the mean time, you will want to interrogate God in prayers for answers, direction, and clarity on your chosen purpose. “… Brethren give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if you do these things, ye shall never fall” (KJV) 2 Pet. 1:10. God wants you to draw even closer to him

during your time of cultivation. “…Men ought always pray, and not faint.” (KJV) Luke18:1. I believe that when you consistently pray he will expose you to yourself, whether it is good, bad, worthy or unworthy. Prayer is communication with God and it results in a growing and flourishing relationship with you and the father. “Pray without ceasing” (KJV) 1 Thess. 5:17. Prayer will assist God with the divine transformation on what God wants from, and out of you (the absolute best). Furthermore, be certain, and be clear of where, and what, he wants you to do, stay yourself. We are all unique and original, be the best you, you could ever be. Do the lords work in integrity, diligence, grace, sincerity, enthusiasm, love, consistence, so that he will be glorified, and pleased. “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him” (KJV) Col. 3:16 Allow your gift, and characteristic to draw souls for the kingdom. There are so many gifts and talent in the kingdom, one of these might be yours, find your niche; a prayer warrior, leader, pastor, minister, teacher, life coach, evangelist, watchman on the wall, singer, praise dancer, administration, outreach ministry, entertainment, hospitality, server, secretary, helps, encourager, an armor bearer, counselor, driver, and so much more. “A man’s gift maketh room for him and bringeth him before great men” (KJV) Prov. 18:16. Use what you have, and stay in your calling. It will open doors of possibilities. “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: …” (KJV) Eph. 4:11-13 God is faithful and just to fulfill his perfect will for your life. Therefore, you must adjust, adhere, obey, and prepare. Be sure to

remain under right leadership, and receive the mentor who God has place over you. Be ready, receptive, attentive, to digest every word of instructions given for your life’s purpose. “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (KJV) Prov. 3:5, 6. Though you might get dreary and weary; do not sleep in this process. You are in the stage of anticipation and waiting. Spiritually, your leader is gearing you up, and he or she is taking you some where; a place you have never been. It is called another dimension of God’s phenomenon exploits. “… But the people that do know their God shall be strong and do exploits” (KJV), Dan. 11:32. Believer let nothing deter, distract, and lure you from your place of dwelling; you will need this place of refuge for birthing. Walk in the obedience of God. Acknowledge and reverence those who he place as shepherds over your soul. If not you may reap serious consequences and repercussions. Stay on the right path, in other words, when you are told to go, or do something line up with God’s word (the way), do not chose to do the contrary, (your own pleasure). As a result, this will lead to destruction for your life. “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat” (KJV) Matt. 7:13. Listen to wise counsel and receive instructions from authority. During your phase of preparation this phase is imperative. Do get all, and keep all of the Godly substance, deposits and investments that are imparted, carved out, custom made for your life. God’s purpose must be fulfilled and manifested in your life. God’s master plan is to materialize his will and power in you. “…Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.” (KJV) Matt. 6:10

All bountiful hands. I will not be a beggar, asking for limited mortal prosperity, Health and knowledge. I am thy child, as such I demand, without limitations, a divine child’s share of thine unlimited riches. Divine Father, I care not what I permanently possess but give me the power to acquire at will, whatever I daily need. I am submerged in eternal light, it permeates in every particle of my being, I am living in that light. Thy divine spirit fills me within and without. O Father, break the boundaries of the little waves of my life that I may joint he ocean of thy vastness.

Because I know that within me is the intelligence to understand and the power to overcome. For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light. Encouraging Proclamations & Positive Confessions “YOU ARE THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD”

By: Suzette Smith We proclaim the word! God’s word will become evident in our lives. Manifest your word Lord as we profess your name. We will embrace the seed of righteousness in us. We are not only “hearers of the word, but doers also." God’s word is “sharp,” “quick,” “piercing” and sure. We reactivate our spirit in righteousness by God’s word. “We believe in the Lord God and his promises and we will be established.” We are “saved by his grace”. “We are the righteousness of God.” “The Lord knows who belongs to him”. We will set our affections and concerns on the (spiritual) heavenly things (above). The battle and warfare (natural trial, tribulation, persecution, and affliction) belongs to the lord. We render and surrender our cares to the Lord. God gave us the potential to endure the challenges of life. We inherit resistant power, power to endure, power to recover, and the power to bounce back from our God the Father. He has given us the right to war in the spirit, to nullify, apprehend, and destroy the works of the adversary. “When the enemy comes in like a flood the Spirit of the lord will lift up a standard against him.” “The Lord is the saving strength of his anointed.”

“You are the head and not the tail, above only and not beneath.” “He will not have you confounded neither ashamed, but he is with you.” Your due season will come; no one can stop your due season. The righteous of God always wins. “He causes us to triumph over the adversary.” Jesus Christ stands as your mediator, and for every dull, dreary, complicated moment, and circumstance in your life, he recompenses you a just reward. You have the “victory”, for you hold the keys to your destiny. Prayer is your means of restitution, and will bring you “the treasure of God”. You are born to overcome all obstacles and hindrances. You have the vigor to exceed and accelerate, and the God potential, gifts and talents, that he has bestowed on you. The Lord equips you for the task ahead. He prepares you for your assignment. I acknowledge the heavenly father for who “He is” and I appreciate him, “for what he has done,” in my life. I am God’s child, and the righteousness of God. I am not “weak but I am strong.” I will be strengthened, abound and be unmovable in god’s righteousness. I see his goodness, mercy, grace, and greatness, which are all I need. Favor is my honor, and preferential treatment is his requite towards me. I bear the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. He gives me rest in the midst of controversy. He is my manufacturer, and I am a product of his reflection. I am an original, and I am secured in who I am. I believe in God and I believe in myself. My struggles are over. God takes care of his children. “The Lord is my shepherd I have everything I want.” My needs are always met. Everyone of my disappointment is God’s appointment. The Lord consistently pours out his merited favor on my life. All principalities and demonic influences, and rulers of darkness of this world concerning me, are destroyed, in Jesus name. I walk in God’s righteousness and by his grace I am sustained. By his goodness and mercy I have peace, assurance, restoration,

recovery, healing and comfort, help, solemn and shield. Though the enemy vaunts, flaunts, and magnify his plans concerning my situation, “the situation is only temporary. “I call those things that are not as though they were, and it will accomplished”. I walk with the authority and power of God. I “pull down, and bring to naught, every imagination and vain things in high places that is not of him.” Doors and opportunities are opening for me. The righteous are blessed and favored by the lord. “Only if I confess and believe, I will conceive, whatsoever, I believe, then I will have whatsoever I say according to the father’s will.” I am the “righteousness of God” and “joint heir” of the king. “I love him because he first loved me.” My desires must be according to his will. “He directs and orders my steps”. I am his creation, and God said, “It is good.” The Lord forgives my iniquity. I forgive myself, and those who sinned against me. I let go of the old and negative things that try to suppress me, and grab a hold of new possibilities and positive reinforcement. My thoughts are pure. My spirit is at peace with God and his people. God sees the good in me. Therefore, I look for the best in others. I am my brother’s keeper. I choose to uphold the others in prayer, and if necessary, physical support. I use God’s source as my resource to assist people. I am a “wise soul winner.” I have compassion and love for people. My love is not tainted nor fake, but sincere and genuine. I am not barren but I bear fruit consistently, in season and out of season. I will not covet the gift of others nor their possession. “It is not wise for me to compare myself to another.” I am “content” with what I have, and what I have obtained. I pursue and go after the God things and his kingdom. In all I do, he causes me to utilize my God given potential. The Lord allows me to achieve and succeed in every good work. God gives me (seed inside) the ability and competency to love (be charitable), help, en-

hance, emotionally support, and encourage my church family, immediate family, extended family, kinships, relatives, friends, and my community. I bear the fruit of righteousness. I produce more “love, joy, peace, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance and long suffering”. I imitate and follow the attributes and legacy of Jesus Christ. I am a powerful asset to society, and a threat to the adversary. I am an effective servant of the Lord, and “the righteousness of God.” “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” I am not “forsaken”, neither am I forgotten. God guides and looks out for me. I expect great things, and I look for spectacular events to happen in my life. I am grateful, thankful, honored and fortunate to be the righteous of God. When I call him, I am privilege that he hears me. He makes my heart merry and glad. I get God (good) results when I pray. I am motivated in righteousness. Therefore, my prayer is not in vain. God reveals and manifest his love for me daily. I will continuously put my trust in the Lord. God gives me a reason and a purpose to live. He speaks “life and light to every dark and dead” situation that affects me. I am the righteousness of God, I will do his will, and good pleasure in Jesus name… (KJV) John15-16, 2 Tim. 2:15, Heb. 4:12, James 1:22, Rom. 5:19, 2 Corinth. 5:17/21, Ps. 34:17, Rom. 10:10, Ps. 23:3, Prov. 10:30-32, Matt. 13:43. 1 John 2:1, Ps. 111: 3, Rev. 22:1, Ps. 23: 1-5, Prov. 14:34, 35, Phil 4:13/19, Ps.1:1-3, 2 Corinth. 4:18, Eph. 6:14, Phil.3:9, 1 Ps. 51:10, Pet. 2:24, 2 Tim. 3:16, Ps. 51:12, Eph. 10-18, 1 Thess. 5:17, Ps. 28:8, Heb. 10:23, 2 Pet. 3:9, Ps. 31:1-3, Matt. 5:44, Rom. 12:20, Eph. 3:20, Ps. 25:2, John 16:13/22-24, Prov. 3:5, 6, Prov. 4:23, Luke 11:13, Eph. 2:4-7, Ps.6:9, 2 Corinth. 10:12, John 4:34, Prov. 11:30, Rm. 12:10, Ps. 55:22, Matt. 11:30, Gal. 6:2, Rom. 13:10-14, Prov. 10:12, 1 John 4:7, Ps. 37:7, Luke 12:15, Matt. 6:33, Eph. 4:25, Gal. 5:13, Matt.25:21.

Dreams, commitment, and hard work is the reason for the great accomplishment of Brother Llyod Williams’s third gospel CD entitled ‘I Am Blessed’, which was recently released. Brother Llyod whose formal name is Llyod Churchill St. Clare Williams, told the Good News Chronicles that the CD had been in the making for the past two years. He termed the success as satisfactory, making it known that he always strove for the best. This was not the first time we had the opportunity of speaking to Mr. Williams about the history of his musical career. This legend’s talent was discovered at the age of five years old, and he has been singing for over forty-five years. He has toured the world, singing and performing with some of the most famous internationally known artiste in the world of music. Bro. Llyod is now a born again Christian and expresses his music by

•A US atheist group began its attention seeking ‘Holy book - for – Porn’ program on Monday at the University of Texas in San Antonio. For three days, members of the Atheist Agenda gave students pornographic magazines in exchange for any religious texts, as part of their annual “Smut for Smut” campaign. Leaders of the group argue that religious books contain violence, spark religious wars, advocate for the mistreatment of women, and are therefore no better than pornography. University officials admit that the atheist event is controversial, and the majority of students do not agree with it. But they also said the event is legal, and students have the right to freedom of speech and assembly. – Ethan Cole, Christian Post- March 4, 2010. •Two churches have been burnt to the ground and Christians attacked after tension erupted over the publication of an offensive poster of Jesus Christ in Punjab, in India. Police said that trouble began after some Christian youth protested against a poster of Jesus holding a beer can and a cigarette, which appeared in some newspapers. …It follows controversy in the state of Meghalaya, where a similar image was printed in a primary school textbook. – John Malhotra – Christian Today •Cheatham County Schools have agreed to the American civil liberties Union’s demands to end the promotion of religion by teachers and officials during school hours. haps the world’s most famous college dropout, has poured more than $2 billion into programs and scholarships to help more students complete college. It is comforting, however to see that President Obama has included readiness for both college and careers in his discussions of education reform-most recently when he announced an overhaul of the No Child Left Behind law. What’s still getting lost though is that some argue that too many students are going to college not because they want to, but because they think they have to. What is the solution you might ask for students who are not college minded? THE APPRENTICE MODEL should be instituted from as early as middle school. This model gives the students who would normally drop and fall through the cracks a chance to work their way through a check list of industry skills in a standard-based program. This program should work in tandem with the high school curriculum and a certificate given to confirm these students have met these standards. When this is done then, everyone would enjoy success and the “forgotten half” would be a phrase of the past.

spreading the gospel. We asked Bro. Llyod what makes this CD different, and he responded by saying that God has taken him to a higher level and he is now more experienced in serving the Lord. Mr. Williams added that he is accustomed to the ‘big band’ sound and states that he will use the same quality sound in his gospel music to maintain a quality standard. Greatly supported by his wife Mrs. Jean Williams, whom he referred to as his rock, and his daughters Carla and Nicole, Bro. Williams shared his appreciation by saying that he feels truly blessed to have God in his life, and a wonderful family. His daughter Nicole who is also a professional recording artist gave him tremendous support and encouragement in putting his CDs together. ‘Sky is the limit’, and ‘with God, all things are possible’, says Bro. Llyod as he continued to tell about his hard work and his faith. He spoke of the passion and desire he and his wife share for helping people. As he works in the comfort of his own studio, he says that he is able to do things his way; referring to his music. He is very satisfied with the outcome of his CD, and said that he will continue to give God all the glory for his talent, wisdom, and strength. He thanks God for all the musicians who helped him to make the album a success; especially his cousin Bill Campbell in England, his engineer Kirk Swaby for putting everything together, Mr. Jerry Hutchinson who is an inspiration to him, Nicole Sharpe, Betty Wells, Lataya HallDowner, and others. lege is widely seen as the ticket to personal economic security and to global competitiveness. And the message has gotten through: The percentage of students who went on to college or trade school within a year of high school climbed from 47% in 1973 to 67%in 2007, Census data show. Yet there is an understanding of concern about a group of students-sometimes called “the forgotten half,” a phrase coined 22 years ago by social scientists studying at-risk young peoplewho, for whatever reason, do not think college is for them. It’s expressed by soul.-searching parents such as Carol, whose son doesn’t thrive in the classroom, It’s also expressed increasingly by educators, economists, and policy analysts, who question whether it’s realistic and responsible to push students into college even if the odds of academic success seem low. These students are swimming against a powerful tide. A small but growing number of states now require all high schoolers to take a college entrance exam. Philadelphia’s mayor has opened an office in City Hall last month to help residents get information about how to attain a college degree. Bill Gates, per-

Sleep and Sleep Disorders

By: Morrine Foster-Huey, PA-S Sleep is a state, which is actively produced by the brain. It constitutes a period of reduced activity, reversible immobility, reduced sensitivity as well as specie-specific body positions and sleep sites. Sleep is more conducive in a situation where there is no eminent danger, there is boredom or after extended periods of wakefulness. There are two kinds of sleep: optional sleep, which increases when there is boredom, and safety and which decreases in the presence of danger. Core sleep, which increases with increasing wakefulness and brain development. The Electroencephalograph (EEG) is a machine used to measure the brain activity. Using this machine one can measure the brain waves during wake and sleep periods as well as in different disease states. The brainwaves identified by the EEG are Delta (slow waves), Theta, Alpha and Beta waves and REM sleep (Rapid eye movement). These waves are identified at different stages of the sleep cycle. While awake, the EEG can identify two states because different brain waves are associated with them: 1) a mentally alert stage indicated by beta waves or, 2) a relaxed mental state indicated by alpha waves. Sleep is a very important part of our lives as it occupies approximately onethird of our day. It is estimated that an adult needs approximately seven to eight hours of sleep daily in order to function optimally, while a baby sleeps approximately sixteen hours daily. There is an internal clock located in the brain that drives the sleep wake cycle and other activities. It is also known that the general timing of sleep is based on the changing from day to night, a twentyfour hour cycle. It is the custom that most humans sleep during the night when light is less intense. Also that most people sleep in darkened rooms, as this is more conducive to a good nights sleep. Sleep serves various functions such as resting of the muscles, decrease in metabolism, rebuilding proteins in the brain, reorganizing synapses and strengthening memories and an overall conservation of energy. Loss of sleep results in a reduction in the level of concentration and performance

as well as making the body more vulnerable to diseases. This indicates a reduction in the efficiency of the immune system to function in the protection of the body. Inadequate sleep is a major cause of accidents on the roadways, as well as, by workers and students. A sleep-deprived driver can be compared to someone driving under the influence of alcohol. A Polysomnograph is used specifically in the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. There are many sleep disorders such as insomnias-inadequate sleep, Sleep Apnea, Narcolepsy, Periodic Limb Movement Disorders, REM Behavior Disorders, Night Terrors, Sleep walking and Sleep Talking. Insomnias—inadequate sleep – may be caused by noises, uncomfortable temperatures, stress, pain, diet and medications. It can also be a result of different disease states such as epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, brain tumors, depressions, anxiety or other psychological or neurological conditions. Inability to sleep may also result from a change in the time schedule, such as moving an hour forward in the spring or shifting an hour backward in the fall. This affects the natural circadian rhythm of the body generated by the internal clock in the brain. Another cause, surprisingly, may be the result of sleeping pills. Excessive use may result in dependence on these medications and patient may be unable to fall asleep or maintain sleep without them. Sleep Apnea is problem breathing while one is asleep—this can cause sleepiness during the day, impaired attention, depression, and sometimes heart problems. This disorder may be a result of genetic abnormalities, hormones, obesity or old age deterioration of brain mechanisms that reg ulate breathing. Treatment for sleep apnea include weight loss, as well as ,avoiding alcohol and sleep medication as these worsen the situation by further depressing the sleep muscles. Surgery may be an option to reduce the excess tissue that results in obstruction of the breathing passageway. Another option in the treatment of this disorder is the use of a CPAP machine (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure). A mask is snugly fitted over the nostrils and the machine provides a fixed pressure of air strong enough to keep the breathing passage open. Narcolepsy is a condition in which there is excessive daytime sleepiness, which can be gradual or sudden. It is generally accompanied by Cataplexy, which is muscle weakness while the person is awake. There can also be sleep paralysis and hypnagogic hallucinations (dreamlike experiences in which the person has problems distinguishing from reality). The most common treatment for this disorder is stimulant drugs, such as Ritalin (Methylphenidate) Periodic Limb Movement Disorder is repeated involuntary movement of the legs and sometimes the arms. In many cases, this may not be a problem for the person experiencing this problem, but it may be a major

&

N

A

T

I

O

problem for the partner. In severe cases, tranquilizers are prescribed to help in the control of this disorder. REM sleep disorder is one in which people move around vigorously in their REM sleep period. It is thought that they are acting out the contents of their dreams. Most of the movements may be related to dreams in which they are been attacked and are therefore defending themselves. They may therefore punch, kick and leap about in this particular disorder. This increases the chances of them injuring themselves, others or damaging property. This disorder is more common in elderly people, especially elderly men with brain diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease. In these cases, there is damage to the section of the brain that sends messages to the spinal cord to suppress spinal nerves and prevent muscle movements during sleep. Night Terror is not a regular nightmare. People generally awaken screaming in terror. It is an experience of extreme terror. It is much more common in children than in

adults. Sleep talking is a very common occurrence and is generally harmless. People can sleep talk for years and unless someone tells you about it, you will never know. Sleep walking generally runs in families and the behavior is generally poorly planned, executed, and generally not remembered. It is thought that a part of the brain is awake while the other part is still asleep. This can be potentially dangerous especially if the person starts driving a car in this condition. No precautions are taken and the rules of the road are totally disregarded. The Late Rev. Dr, Basil Joseph Small By: Veronica Thawney

Jodi Ann Small

Reverend Dr. Basil Joseph Small was born in the Island of Jamaica on July 2, 1957, in the Parish of Clarendon and he passed away on March 10, 2010 in Brooklyn NY. Dr. Small was the youngest of four children; Harry Hurd, Kenneth Hurd, and Deloris Small. He was the only child from the union of his parents Mr. Phillip Small who was also a pastor and Mrs. Louise Small. Even though it was a time of grief, everyone experienced a hallelujah time as family, clergy, friends and associates gathered to support his wife Mrs Dorrett Bernice Small his children Kerridene Judene, Nicole, Joel and other relatives. The wake was held at the Pentecostal Deliverance Tabernacle located at 702 Nostrand Ave Brooklyn NY, where Dr Small

was the Pastor and Overseer. This was followed by the viewing and celebration service held at Bethesda Healing Centre at 167 East 98th Street in Brooklyn NY, where Bishop Dr. Annette Lazarus-Rose is the pastor and overseer. The last moment of Dr Basil Small's life was spent with his wife whom he loved dearly. Dr Small was preparing to take his wife to work. He walked to his van and got inside, and while in his van he said these last words “bye Dor bye forever" then went to eternity. Every one spoke of the wonderful experiences they shared with Dr Small. His grieving family certainly showed the spirit of boldness as they participated individually and collectively to celebrate the life of their hero. His eldest daughter Kerridene Small gave a wonderful rendition of a song she said that her father loved. His son Joel gave a very spirit- felt selection, while his daughter Judene danced in celebration of their dad's life. Judene told the audience that her father was always with her wherever she went to compete in her dancing. At the end both mother and children joined together and sang one of Dr. Small's favorite songs, ‘Don’t be grieving because I am leaving, don’t you cry when I say good bye". The moderator for the day was Bishop Dr. Annette Lazarus-Rose. Other pastors and ministers who participated were:

Dr. Farley said in his speech that living with God is reserved for the righteous and that Dr. Small had inherited his place. Many other Bishops and pastors came out to give their condolences. Bishop Hardin, Pastor Roach, pastor Gordon among others were present. Some of the comments we heard about Rev. Dr. Basil Joseph Small were: " He was a small man with a big Holy Ghost' he was a ' stand up guy and a dynamic preacher', he was a preaching machine, he was a man who "liked to debate especially politics" a man who "gave support and encourage young people", a man who would treat his friends like family, a good father and a great husband. Rev. Dr Basil Small was an advertiser with Good News Chronicles Christian News Paper. He advertise in our Church Directory as well as other events that he would usually have. He was the first person to bring us back good news from abroad about our paper; when he said to us ' I was in Jamaica at a convention and a pastor look at
