Sector analysis The future of EOR in Oman

Regarding deployment of EOR in the Middle East, Oman in particular has taken the lead, joined by neighbouring countries, for instance, the UAE. Oman has been the pioneer of EOR technology in the region. Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), the national oil company of Oman led the country in EOR with first trials of EOR in the late 1980s and the first EOR programme completed in 1989. As for full operations commissioning of an EOR project, PDO successfully commissioned an EOR project in Marmul in October 2010. The Marmul project was the first project in the Middle East to use chemical polymers as a thickening agent for water injection. PDO’s EOR activities are mainly focused on the technically and commercially challenging heavy and ultra-heavy oil fields. In terms of the technologies, PDO’s EOR activities in Oman are more focused on chemical EOR and thermal EOR deployment.

isham

PDO is currently aiming to develop a technically challenging block in Oman known as Block 6 in the Khuff and Sudair reservoirs at the Yibal field. The EOR project at the field is worth approximately US$2.5bn and is located in the North of Oman. PDO’s target for the EOR project includes a production target of 20,000b/d of oil and 211 MMcf/d of gas for a period of 20 years. The project is still ongoing with first gas and oil due in Q1 2021. Other EOR projects in the country include phase 3 of the Block 6 Marmul polymer project in southern Oman. The Marmul project has been developed in phases with phase 1 starting in 2011, phase 2 in 2015 and phase 3 since 2017. Phase 3 of the project aims to develop 80 million barrels of incremental oil, with first oil targeted by Q1 2023. Another interesting project in Oman is the integration of renewable energy in the oil industry project called the Miraah Solar Steam Oil Recovery project by PDO and GlassPoint. The project will comprise of a 1,021MW solar EOR plant in the Amal oil field located in southern Oman and expected to come online in 2023.

Oil has been the heart of energy for the Middle East countries for many years. While the energy sector is looking towards alternative sources of energy, demand for oil is still high as oil is still relevant in our daily lives. In layman’s terms there is nothing around us that is not directly or indirectly contributed by oil. For instance, bicycles, house mops, roofs, trash bags, paints, speakers, cosmetic products, and the list goes on. According to BP’s 2020 statistical review report, world oil consumption has recorded an increase of 1.4% annually since 2008, with the Middle East reported at 2.2% annually. As such, there is a need to ensure that oil recovery is maximised to meet these demands. In terms of the technology used to maximise oil recovery, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) comes into play. EOR or tertiary recovery is a technique utilised for decades by operators to further extract oils from depleted reservoirs when the conventional natural flow or waterflooding is no longer efficient in recovering remaining oil in reservoir. Oil recovery rate for the conventional primary and secondary recovery method can generally go up to 50%. However, with EOR, the recovery rate of reserves is ramped up to more than 50% and can go as high as 80%. The three main EOR methods implemented throughout the world can be categorised as chemical EOR, thermal EOR and gas injection EOR. The selection for the best method of EOR to be implemented is done based on a detailed study of the specific field; the reservoir depth, oil viscosity etc. Part of the early stage for the project is a technical and financial feasibility study. Field trials done during this stage can be very expensive and should the results not meet the company’s technical and financial requirements, the project can either take another route suited to the requirements with lesser uncertainty or be abandoned completely.

Noor H

In Oman, due to the technical challenges and high cost implementation of EOR, the government is incentivising international oil companies to implement exploration and field development in depleted reservoirs; which in turn makes EOR favourable in the country. As stated in EIA’s 2019 Oman report, the incentives include generous contract terms for IOCs such as significant equity share in a project, making Oman more favourable for EOR implementation compared to their neighbouring countries in the region. Inside this issue... At the time of writing, we’re now halfway through the Virtual Energy Exports Conference 2020 Mark R isley after two packed-full days of conference sessions, networking and one-to-ones. We’re all used to attending webinars, but I’m sure I wasn’t alone in wondering how a full-scale conference and exhibition could make the same switch to a virtual setting. So far the event has been hugely successful, and we’ve had some great feedback from delegates, speakers and exhibitors. Of course, you would expect a few technical hitches but the EIC team has responded brilliantly to ensure each session took place and all attendees had access. The BP session on the Net Zero Teesside project has been my personal highlight, as it was fascinating to hear about a relatively untested energy transition technology such as CCUS being developed on a commercial scale in the UK. We still have two exciting days to come, with Aramco, Petronas, Pale Blue Dot, Total and Petrofac just some of the companies confirmed to speak. Following the International Delegation from Oman session yesterday, featuring PDO, businessgateways and DIT, EIC Research Analyst Nur Ain Noor Hisham discusses the future of enhanced oil recovery in Oman in this month’s sector analysis on page 2. ABB features in spotlight on technology, looking at its analytics and AI software that combines operational data with engineering and IT data, allowing producers to optimise their operations. Find out about the newest EIC members from page 8, followed by the latest news from our members on pages 12-15, including EIC Company of the Year 2017 Servelec Controls and their rebrand to Innovation Transforming Industry (ITI). As always, our regional directors provide great regional updates from the UK and Europe, Middle East, Asia Pacific, North and Central America and South America.

Member news Buss Energy takes stake in drone specialist Aero Enterprise

The Buss Energy Group from Hamburg has taken a strategic stake of 24.9% in Aero Enterprise GmbH from Linz. The Austrian company has been operating inspection flights on onshore and offshore wind turbines with self-developed flying robots since 2013. The drones are based on helicopter technology and can be used even at high wind speeds. This is particularly relevant at sea where the weather conditions are a frequent obstacle. Also, long flight times of the drones are a great advantage especially for offshore use.

Buss Energy’s professional sales structures and many years of operational experience in the wind sector will help to further establish our technology on the market.

Intertek launches Protek

Mobile test kits allow Intertek’s experts to analyse swabs immediately after sampling offshore, with actionable results available within five hours of sample collection.

The swabbing and testing of surfaces for the presence of COVID-19 is an essential part of any strategy to verify that cleaning practices are fit for purpose and have reduced the risk of employees contracting the virus. This is particularly important on offshore installations where there is a high volume of personnel in an enclosed space. Initial studies have shown that COVID-19 can survive for significant periods of time on certain surfaces and it is for these reasons that an effective verification programme is needed.

The new surface testing capability complements the existing suite of services provided to the sector and allows Intertek to deliver total quality assurance to employers in increasingly challenging operating conditions. There is a growing need in the global oil and gas industry for independent E&P services, expertise and specialist knowledge to provide third party verification of the safety of assets.

Intertek, the FTSE 100 total quality assurance provider, has launched COVID-19 surface hygiene testing for the UK offshore oil and gas market as part of its Protek offering – the world’s first health, safety and wellbeing assurance programme for people, workplaces and public spaces.

Intertek utilises Reverse Transcription quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (RTqPCR), the same method used by governments worldwide for the detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

MAN to supply compression technology for offshore gas production

MAN Energy Solutions has won a gas-compression order from energy solutions provider Yinson, comprising four RB-type centrifugalcompressor trains for gas production and export, as well as two screwcompressor trains. The units will be deployed on the FPSO Anna Nery, which will be built and operated by Yinson. The FPSO will be located in the Marlim and Voador field of the Campos Basin, about 150km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. MAN Energy Solutions’ scope of supply covers four RB-type compressor trains (2×RB 56-4+4 and 2×RB 28-7) with hydraulic, variablespeed gearboxes driven by an electric motor, which will be designed, manufactured and tested at MAN’s facility in Zurich, Switzerland. The machines will be used for gas export as well as gas lift to maximise the quantity and efficiency of gas production. The Anna Nery will eventually have a production capacity of up to 70,000 barrels of oil and 6,600Nm3 of natural gas per day.

Overseas events Looking ahead to 2021

As we start heading towards the end of the year, and what a year it has been, the overseas events team is now starting to look forward to our 2021 schedule. We hope 2021 will see more live exhibitions and events coming back to life once more. We will look, where we can, to run hybrid events, virtual delegations and host ‘meet the buyer’ sessions online when required so that we can continue to support our members and exhibitors if we still see some events postponed at the beginning of the year.

UK and Europe news Regional update

This year so far has been both unique and exciting for the UK events team who have continuously adapted to offer our members, and non-members, a relevant Jo Cam pbell up-to-date series of industry webinars to help maximise opportunities in the global energy industries. As we reached the end of summer, we focused our attention on Energy Storage on 18 August. Participants heard from DNV GL, Upside Energy and Storengy on their project activities, potential challenges faced during COVID-19, supply chain experiences and growing trends in the sector. There was a real sense of progress and a further push for renewable energy installations as they continue to provide flexibility and balanced services across the UK and Europe. Our regional committees are an integral part of how we operate and now more than ever they offer an insight into how we can better support our members and partners. Our southern committee met virtually in August to reconnect and draw upon our members experiences and key learnings during the COVID-19 crisis. We look forward to catching up with our regional UK committees and are eager to set a positive course for the remainder of 2020. Our final event in August was the Floating Offshore Wind webinar which attracted over 130 attendees and heard from a host of expert speakers. Our very own Lara Juergens provided an industry overview and was followed by Andronikos Kafas from Ocean Winds, a newly formed joint venture controlled in equal parts by EDP Renováveis and ENGIE. Further industry insights came from KBR, our supporting partner ONE and The Carbon Trust, who highlighted the importance of innovation to drive cost reduction, accelerate deployment and make processes safer. We were delighted to welcome Balmoral, Bridon Bekaert and GWEC as our digital supporters. Taking us into September we hosted An Audience with Petrofac which saw over 200 delegates log on to hear from EIC’s CEO Stuart Broadley, Nick Shorten, Managing Director Western Hemisphere and Craig McCartney, Director of Projects at Petrofac. They spoke at length about Petrofac’s heritage of service delivery and combining decades of engineering, construction and operations know-how with the latest digital technologies. The webinar ended with an insightful interactive panel session whereby attendees could direct any questions to Nick and Craig alongside offering vital insights on positioning to support a new era of efficiency and innovation for the UKCS. We would also like to thank ABB for supporting this webinar as a global digital supporter. Sign up for the EICOnline newsletter

September also saw the return of the Energy Exports Conference, or vEEC week as it became affectionately known due to this year seeing the event go virtual. The full global EIC team came together to host a series of webinars from world-wide speakers presenting on project updates and supply chain requirements. Representatives from Petronas, PDO, Repsol Sinopec, COSIA, KBR, Booth Welsh and many more joined our international delegations and exhibitors for a hectic but highly successful week of knowledge, business opportunities and virtual networking. We would like to thank everyone who supported this unique event. Special thanks go to the sponsors, Petrofac, Brainwave and Unit Birwelco, and the organising partners Aberdeen City Council, DIT, Oil & Gas Authority, OGUK, ONE, SDI, Scottish Enterprise and UK Export Finance. To finish this month’s events update we would like to thank those who have joined our online journey via EIC LIVE e-vents so far and hope you continue to do so as we strive to deliver more exciting webinars in the coming months. Thank you to all our global digital supporters who have embraced this marketing initiative, which provides companies with a cost-effective opportunity to promote their brand using our webinar platform, and continues to be a popular addition to our e-vents offering. This month we were delighted to welcome Balmoral, Bridon Bekaert, GWEC and ABB as our valued supporters. In addition, and allowing us to expand our virtual offering further, we are able to provide bespoke hosting opportunities via the EIC online platform. If you and your organisation want to reach a larger global audience, put your business front and centre, strengthen your brand in the energy sector, reconnect with customers and expand your network, please contact a member of the team. We look forward to discussing what ways we can support your organisation further: aberdeen@the-eic.com Jo Campbell, Regional Director (UK & Europe) jo.campbell@the-eic.com

Middle East news Regional update

The final quarter of the year is usually one of the busiest in the region, and while we are likely to experience limited travel and continued social distancing measures, the Ryan M cPhers on team here has put together an excellent programme of events to see out the calendar year on a positive note. ADIPEC week, taking place from 9-12 November 2020, will include a virtual strategic and technical programme which we are looking to supplement with several business opportunity presentations and 1-to-1 meetings for those who had originally planned to exhibit at the event. I am delighted to announce that we held the initial advisory committee meeting for our forthcoming KSA Connect event which will take place on a virtual platform from 24-25 November 2020 allowing attendees to connect from across the globe. This is in an exciting development in the evolution of our Connect model and one that I have personally been looking forward to since I stepped into the role. Full details can be found on our website with the programme and sponsorship opportunities to be announced shortly. Our series of weekly webinars continue to thrive where recent events have seen an increased focus on the African market with our Nigeria market update attracting a record number of attendees. We are keen to develop this series as we venture into the likes of Mozambique, Angola, Egypt and others. Our African membership and forthcoming Africa EICAssetMap illustrates our continued commitment to this region which we look forward to building on in the months ahead. Plans are also underway to follow up with an update into the Russia and CIS market with Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner (HMTC). This is a growing market for many of our members where this overview will help to provide some valuable insight while establishing some key contacts in the region. With a continued range of webinars throughout the coming months anyone interested in sponsoring one of our webinars as part of our Global Digital Supporter initiative can find out more by contacting baqhtawar.shaikh@the-eic.com New members continue to join us from the region and we recently welcomed Aramex, PACC Offshore Services Holdings (POSH) and Equilibrium Engineering Consultancy Group. We are delighted to welcome them all into the EIC family and look forward to working together in the months ahead. Get in touch Share your news and views...

Hopefully, we are now starting to see the green shoots of recovery in the industry or at the very least a period of consolidation. According to Saudi Arabia’s energy minister global oil demand is expected to recover to 97% of pre-pandemic levels by the end of the year, following record slumps in demand in the first half of the year, certainly something to be optimistic about. On that note I once again want to remind our members of the wealth of market intelligence tools that we have on offer to help you stay on top of your business during this time. Anyone requiring either initial training or a refresher of these tools is welcome to get in touch and we will arrange for this to be delivered. Please continue to keep safe and we look forward to seeing as many of you in person when the time permits, and it is deemed safe to do so. Saudi renewables sector could generate 750,000 jobs

The development of Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy sector could result in the creation of up to 750,000 jobs over the next decade as the kingdom pushes to generate 7% of its total electricity output from renewables by 2030. The kingdom’s energy ministry set up a renewable energy project development office in 2018 to oversee the development of solar and wind projects. It is pursuing an ambitious renewable power strategy and plans to add 60GW of clean energy capacity to the national grid by 2030. Of this, 40GW will come from solar photovoltaic plants, 16GW from wind turbines and 2.7GW from concentrated solar power.

Asia Pacific news Regional update

The COVID-19 situation has taken a turn in comparison with the previous month where we noted that the situation in most countries Azman in Asia was showing Nasir improvements. Due to new outbreaks of the virus mostly due to imported cases, we are seeing a few countries re-introducing restrictions to curb its spread. In Vietnam for example, despite being one the earliest countries to lift lockdown restrictions, a second outbreak occurred in Da Nang which resulted in a number of deaths. Vietnam borders are closed again and gathering of people is not allowed for more than 30 at any one time. In Malaysia, compulsory quarantine at government-designated centres was re-instated for incoming travellers. For other countries such as India, Indonesia, Philippines, Pakistan and Bangladesh, the COVID-19 situation is still dangerous with the number of cases and deaths at worrying levels. For EIC APAC, the immediate impact is on the planned EIC Connect Indonesia 2020 which has now been postponed for the second time and is scheduled for October 2021. EIC Connect Vietnam which is scheduled for March 2021 will proceed as originally planned but is looking more likely to be a fully virtual event. We do not have a date yet for EIC Connect Malaysia which was scheduled originally for September 2020. In our latest series of live webinars our analysts successfully deliver presentations on the latest updates on progress of energy projects in the region. Regional analyst Farhana Borhanudin spoke on the list of projects which have been delayed and also covered the outlook for oil and gas projects. Nasheena Laing presented on renewables and indicated where the most interesting projects are and Hirzi Iskandar spoke on hydrogen and carbon capture and storage opportunities. A total of 90 participants listened to the webinar and the feedback we obtained afterwards indicated the information given was relevant and beneficial. Our next webinar will be on electrical project costs and safety with Panduit Singapore talking about their specific approach and solutions. Following that will be another webinar with Petrofac speaking on well integrity. We are seeing healthy interest in our new offering, EIC Inform which provides chargeable specific services for members to capitalise on EIC’s network and market intelligence in order to reach new or difficult markets. Santos submits decommissioning plan for Bayu-Undan gas field

Santos is now preparing for the cessation of production at its Bayu-Undan gas field. The company has submitted its environment plan with Australia’s National Offshore Petroleum Safety & Environmental Management Authority (Nopsema) for the decommissioning of the pipeline from the field. Under the submitted plan, Santos includes the decommissioning of the pipeline between the BayuUndan platform and a tie-in point, designated KP380. It also includes the removal of the section of pipeline which lies in Timor-Leste waters. It is understood that the decommissioning activities are expected to take around 39-46 weeks to be completed.

Gas prices set to be at decade-low level in India

India is likely to cut domestic natural gas prices from October 2020 until March 2021 by more than 20% to what would be its lowest level in more than a decade. The price range of domestically produced natural gas is likely to be between US$1.9 to US$1.94 per MMBtu and this will be the third straight reduction in rates in one year. The new gas price will apply to production from existing onshore and shallow-water fields, but not to deep-water and other difficult gas fields that have not yet come on stream. Companies like Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Oil India Limited (OIL), which are responsible for India’s gas output, are likely to be further impacted with the current reduction in gas prices in India. Vedanta Resources and other domestic companies are also likely to be impacted by the price cut.

Colombia to ban fracking?

Various members of the Colombian congress have backed proposed legislation that would ban hydraulic fracturing in the country. They argue that fracking would cause irreparable damage to the environment, posing risks to fauna and flora as well as human health. The move comes at a time when Colombian energy authorities are in the final stages of putting forward a regulatory framework for fracking, which – in the view of the Colombian Oil Association (ACP) – has the potential to unlock US$5bn in annual investment.

Guyana to increase capacity The country’s recently inaugurated government has announced plans to install 400MW of new power capacity within the next five years. The government plans to reduce the cost of electric power by 50% by introducing gas-fired power plants, hydro and solar power plants as well as wind farms.

On 20 August we hosted an EIC LIVE e-vent with an emerging player in the local industry, the Oil Group. Their managing director for business development and investor relations, Mr Gustavo Zumel gave an insight into the recently announced MoU for the development of a modular refinery at the Açu port complex in Rio de Janeiro. The project is being developed in partnership with Entrepose Group, Axens, Tridimensional, Intech and Header Engenharia. They also announced a downstream programme with two modular refineries and one mini refinery on top of the Carandá, Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo refineries. The final Q&A session provided details on who to do business with in the company. Clarisse Rocha, Head of Americas clarisse.rocha@the-eic.com

Brazil sees potential for 16GW of offshore wind by 2050

According to a long-term energy expansion plan drafted by Brazil’s Energy Research Office (EPE), there is potential for the development of 16GW of offshore wind capacity in the country by 2050. Brazil has no offshore wind farms at present, but a preliminary assessment of wind speeds off the coast has identified high potential areas in the country’s northeast, southeast and south regions. The EPE estimate may be conservative, as players such as Iberdrola and Equinor have already started the licensing process for offshore wind projects across the country amounting to a total capacity of 14GW.

INFORM Access our premium market research service

Example of EIC Inform service delivery ABC Valves is a manufacturer and supply company to major projects and applications in the UK oil and gas industry. Its products meet complex specifications for end users such as BP, Shell, Equinor and ExxonMobil, among others. The company has been active in the UK and Middle East region for over 50 years with much success. However, its attempts to infiltrate the US market have proved difficult. The company undertook several, expensive, market visits to find they were not meeting with the right contacts, never would receive a response from follow-up emails or calls; or could not get an appointment at all. The MD took forward 40 hours of EIC Inform which provided the following: • A detailed conversation with EIC staff (analyst and regional director) to understand the company’s offering and an understanding of efforts taken thus far to entering the US market. • The EIC undertook extensive EICDataStream research in identifying specific project opportunities over a two five-year period, and identified specific contacts consisting of category management with operators, and front-end engineering and procurement for specific EPCs known to be potentially bidding on specific projects. • The EIC then undertook outreach to over 40 contacts in the USA with operators and contractors, introducing ABC Valves, its specific product offering and how it could solve problems for operators and EPCs. This outreach also ascertained interest in meeting with ABC Valves during a planned visit to Houston for OTC. • The EIC received interest from eight companies to meet with ABC Valves, and eight inquires for further information. The EIC confirmed eight meetings developing a visit programme for ABC Valves and put ABC Valves in direct contact with all 16 companies. • The project took the EIC about 60 hours to complete over a course of six weeks. Feedback from the client was excellent, and they have commissioned a second EIC Inform service for Mexico. • Within one year, the company had received several orders and opened a virtual office with the EIC in Houston.

The company wants to tell clients in a truthful and factual manner about its tools and what they can expect from them. was very much reliant on the CAPEX oil and gas opportunities, which at the time accounted for more than 50% of its revenues back then. Following the 2014 downturn in oil and gas prices, however, the company refocused on the O&M segment and related services, while relying less on the oil and gas market. The company doubled its distributors and reduced its CAPEX reliance to 25% of overall revenues, while increasing margins due to higher labour content. customers and the key to attracting international ones. Indra’s internationalisation process started about five years ago. With the increase of the company’s trust in its quality and track record, the management has decided to be present on international markets to start exporting its products. Instead of a big leap forward, Indra had a steady growth plan: the company started selling through agents, slowly building connections with big EPC players and end users outside of Italy. In recent years, the company has been able to devote its direct sales resources to the export management, combined with the work of agents. As part of a global process, Indra has

decided to move closer to the LNG market. In recent years, the company has been involved in the design, manufacture, and supply of cryogenic valves for two important LNG projects: Yamal LNG (2012) and Arctic LNG 2 (2019). The latter, a multimillion-dollar opportunity, was an example of direct sales to the project. The company is now actively dedicating resources to appear on the list of valve suppliers for the main LNG projects while participating in large LNG events to publicise the skills acquired in the sector. Already a protagonist in the Italian market, Indra is therefore ready to seize opportunities in new sectors and markets. Starting with the agents and moving to direct sales, the company participates in various projects in Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom.

Inverroy Delivering Resilience Solutions

How is Inverroy thriving? Inverroy hand picks team members with diverse backgrounds & skill sets and bolsters these with with further CPD & BCI training allowing Inverroy to consolidate its position as a fastgrowing player in emergency response, crisis management, business continuity, security and cybersecurity. The company has been translating clients’ corporate policies into trainable and deliverable plans for operating on time and on budget in high-risk and complex environments.

The challenge Back in 2011, Inverroy’s Founder Matthew Wardner had been serving in the British Army for 27 years. He was due to move away from the UK when an old army friend approached him and suggested it was time for a change, that Matthew’s extensive experience in back-up plans and working in operation rooms could be a valuable asset outside the armed forces. It was suggested he could use his extensive army experience in the oil and gas sector.

The solution After initially working for two risk management consultancies, he felt he could do more. Using his army pension, in 2015 he decided to set up his own company and founded Inverroy Crisis Management. Adopting honesty, integrity and professionalism as the company’s core values, the company would work with clients and not just for them. In a world where risk is an inherent part of any operation, Inverroy’s goal would be to understand customers’ drivers and scope of work in order to best serve them.

As the company started to grow its client base, one of Inverroy’s key business opportunities involves Cairn Energy in Mexico, where the oil company started a drilling campaign in 2019. It took four years – from preliminary discussions to first order – to get their trust for a crucial contract: to write emergency response plans compliant with Mexican requirements in addition to the provision of training.

Inverroy overcame many challenges to accomplish its contract on time. To begin with, Mexico’s requirements for international companies were not very clear, as they were set up recently following the opening of the country’s oil and gas sector to private players. The operator lacked understanding of those requirements as well as its ability to meet them all. In addition, Inverroy had to write emergency plans in a way that addressed all issues and satisfied

all parties – Cairn Energy and Mexican regulators. Following a 12-month process, Inverroy successfully delivered on its contract. Emergency response plans passed assessment following their submission, with no impact to the schedule of Cairn’s drilling campaign. In addition, a strong relationship developed between personnel working at the rig and employees working in Mexico City and Edinburgh, ensuring that any emergency response will be carried out according to plan in case anything goes wrong. Inverroy’s culture to go beyond the minimum on time and on budget while following the highest standards places the company on an accelerated growth path: while in 2018-19 the company earned £180,000, in the last financial year revenues rose to £505,000. Inverroy also knows the importance of giving back to society: all employees get five days of paid leave to carry out voluntary work of their choice, while 3% of the company’s operating profit is directed to charity. Inverroy also makes regular presentations at universities to discuss risk management from an industry perspective.

About Inverroy UK-based Inverroy Crisis Management was founded in 2015 with the goal of enhancing the resilience of companies in the Oil & Gas sector and assisting them in preparing for adversity. Their service focuses on enabling companies to do business wherever and whenever they choose by supporting them in four focus areas: emergency response, crisis management, business continuity, and security. Inverroy provides solutions through a delivery model that seeks to analyse the company’s vulnerabilities, design personalised solutions, build capability in the form of one-to-one and team trainings, and validate their created method by testing it in a safe but realistic environment.

McMenon Engineering Services Inspired by the past and motivated by the future

How is McMenon Engineering Services thriving? McMenon’s decision to acquire ABB’s Workington business was a transformative one. Benefiting from a culture of collaborative trust, the recently created SME focuses on investing in product development, acquiring new certifications and exploring new markets.

The challenge In 2013, before the creation of McMenon Engineering Services, the company’s Workington facility was one of many ABB units. At the time working as the site’s General Manager, Anand Puthran remembers telling himself: this Workington business had excellent prospects to succeed as an independent entity. He moved on his career, but that idea lingered on his mind. A few years later, the downturn in the oil and gas industry posed a choice to Anand: continue working harder as an employee during those uncertain times or work for himself and make things happen?

The solution Naturally an entrepreneur, Anand chose the latter option. He set up McMenon Associates – a business that would invest in firms in need of a turnaround. His long-term goal, however, was to acquire a business in full. An interesting thought came to him: what about the ABB Workington site he used to work at? Anand did what any interested buyer would do: he called and asked if ABB

would sell its business unit. Several contacts were made and eventually Anand was able to discuss this opportunity with ABB’s M&A team. ABB agreed with Anand’s proposition and, following a period of due diligence, ABB’s Workington site became McMenon Engineering Services. The acquisition was entirely funded by Anand and two minority shareholders, with no private equity involvement. The newly created company was nominated as ABB’s preferred supplier for differential pressure (DP) flow and temperature measurement equipment, which meant that ABB badged products are still manufactured in the Workington facility and sold globally. In parallel,

McMenon’s own brand of products and engineering solutions are also gaining considerable market share globally with recent major successes in the US. Products manufactured in Workington are employed in nearly 60 countries worldwide. Anand’s leadership proved vital in the creation of McMenon Engineering Services. He had to make sure that the transition from a large corporate owner to a start-up SME did not cause staff to fear the unknown. The newly created company held quarterly town meetings and presented successful case studies to bring everyone on board. Anand’s objective was to let employees know they were able to actively contribute to the business.

Product development is a key part of McMenon’s recent journey. The company has invested in building up the site’s second-to-none welding capabilities, which now cater for higher specification projects, as well as new certifications, for example ISO 3834-2 and the AD 2000 HPO both secured after the acquisition. This has allowed McMenon to sell more products and reach new markets. OGM Growth success

How is OGM thriving? A leading metering and sampling OEM, the company has taken the chance to invest, engineer and diversify into the high-pressure and high-corrosion water injection market. Following a major recent contract in the Middle East, OGM is opening a wide pipeline of new growth opportunities.

The challenge Founded in 2012, OGM was created by its parent company OGH to provide engineered metering and sampling products for the oil and gas industry. This was an ambitious goal, as the market already had well-established players in this segment with an extensive global coverage. OGM invested in its own technologies – one for turbine metering and another for ultrasonic metering and eventually became an alternative to the status quo of the competition. This was not enough, however, as there were

segments in which the company had yet to enter.

The solution In 2018, OGM was presented with a game-changing opportunity to enter the niche segment of highpressure metering for water injection applications. In that year, a large Middle East based company was awarded an EPC contract by large oil and gas company in the Region. The contract called for the use of high-pressure metering technology with high-end materials and stringent equipment accuracies. OGM became aware of this EPC contract and set to work. The company saw this was a challenging requirement and analysed the situation, concluding the metering scope required by the project would be a natural extension of their activities. After conducting some engineering work and addressing supply chain gaps, OGM approached

CPECC and assured them that they would be capable of meeting the project’s technical scope within the tight schedule required. Following a disputed tender process with traditional players, OGM’s company Metering & Technology (M&T) emerged as the winning bidder for the supply of large amount (over hundred) helical turbine flow meters to the EPC. The company placed a strategic bid knowing that this project would open up more opportunities in this highend segment. This order required OGM, responsible for manufacturing the equipment in the UK, to design, engineer, supply and calibrate the meters from scratch. OGM’s foray into the niche highpressure metering segment for the water injection market has allowed continued growth. The contract for the project catapulted OGM into the competitive water injection market in the Middle East and served as a proof that the company’s commercial model

Osbit has created better bespoke modular solutions for clients in the oil and gas and renewables sectors, ensuring a higher percentage of repeat business with closer relationships, and an authentic, fun and collaborative problem-solving mindset.

The challenge The definition of a business’ success is usually expressed objectively.

Growing revenues, higher margins and increased productivity are all well-defined goals which fit easily in an Excel spreadsheet. But is success always measured in hard numbers? Which subjective factors can be equally important for a company to be considered successful?

unlocks innovation. Osbit values a teamwork environment that boosts personal development but is also authentic, fun and enjoyable for its employees. Understanding problems and building relationships is a key Osbit skill. In 2019, the Global Marine Group (GMG) approached the company with a subsea boulder problem linked to cable installation work for an offshore wind farm. Osbit wanted to get a full understanding of the problem to consider a solution and suggested speaking to GMG’s client Vattenfall. The idea was welcomed by GMG, and Osbit had the opportunity to run an insight session with both client and end-client. This turned out to be a great suggestion. The meeting marked the beginning of a trust relationship between the three companies and eventually led to a £5m contract award to Osbit. Four months after contract signing, the company delivered an innovative boulder clearance plough for GMG. Osbit developed a solution

capable of clearing the way for subsea cables as well as backfilling over the cable afterwards, enabling savings of £3m to the client. After trials in the second half of 2019, the plough has been certified and is currently being used at the project site. Getting clients involved in problemsolving and earning their trust is key to Osbit’s success. The company’s culture of establishing loyal and genuine relationships has been central to the company’s growth strategy: while in 2012 the company earned £1.2m, in 2019 revenues hit £18.5m – with approximately 80% coming from repeat orders. Osbit’s achievements are not limited to financials, however. The company knows that its culture, working environment and relationships are equally important for their success.

Oxford Flow Disruptive technology in action

How is Oxford Flow thriving? Despite the global COVID-19 crisis, and the downturn in the oil and gas sector, Oxford Flow has remained buoyant. This is largely down to its diverse portfolio and a steady interest in operators seeking cost reductions and efficiency. The company’s IP-series pressure regulating valve, a proven solution for the water industry due to its superior performance, and ease of installation and maintenance, is now being successfully applied in the gas distribution segment (IM series), with 70% of lifecycle cost savings compared to traditional regulating valves.

The challenge A key concern faced by gas distribution companies is to reduce maintenance costs and improve performance. These companies struggle with a consolidated supplier market which does not provide pressure control innovations at a hopedfor pace. A solution was needed to improve reliability and reduce operating costs.

The solution Oxford Flow was founded to solve industry challenges with innovative, problem-solving products. Created at Oxford University with investment from Oxford Sciences Innovation (OSI), the company was formed to answer accuracy issues arising from research on gas turbines. Testing needed carefully controlled heated airflow in addition to controlled inlet pressure, which required more accurate valves.

Design work on a new type of pressure regulator started ten years ago, leading to the launch of Oxford Flow in 2015. The company’s new high-pressure regulator was accurate and compact, proving a commercial success after launch. Oxford Flow then started to look at polymers for its regulator as the water industry was already moving away from brass and other metals due to corrosion and other water quality

issues. The company’s diaphragm-free polymer regulator is up to nine times smaller and lighter than traditional designs, which allows manual installation without any cranage. Performance is also better than conventional diaphragm valves, as the regulators more accurate control prevents and reduces leakage within water networks. Within nine months, Oxford Flow’s innovative polymer pressure regulator was certified and commercialised in the water segment. After its success in the water business, Oxford Flow was eager to diversify into the gas distribution market. The company engaged with Scotia Gas Networks (SGN), a UK-based gas distribution company, as part of an industry-wide innovation project. Regulators were again identified as an issue as SGN devoted too much maintenance to them while experiencing a lack of competitivity

and innovation in the supply chain. Following the successful completion of the project, including extended field trials in SGN’s network, Oxford Flow was able to launch in February 2020 its new IM-series gas regulator for operators in the gas distribution, power generation, industrial gases and oil and gas sectors. The IM valve showed evidence of increased reliability compared to traditional gas regulators. The increase in reliability can result in up to 70% life-cycle cost reduction over a 25 year period, which for UK gas networks has the potential to save them several million pounds per year if they were to change out all their current regulators due to reduced installation and maintenance costs.

strategic investment in Oxford Flow which included the exclusive rights to manufacture the polymer water valve for all markets and to sell all Oxford Flow products into the utility and waste water sector. Following another capital raise from both existing and new investors, Oxford Flow looks set to grow and consolidate its diversification into the oil and gas sector, where it will shortly be launching its new stemless actuated axial flow valve, which eliminates the failure modes and fugitive emissions associated with existing valves.

About Oxford Flow

Oxford Flow’s disruptive technology is paying dividends for the company as it prepares to tap into opportunities within the UK and beyond globally. After sales of just under £300,000 in 2019, the company expects its revenues to grow rapidly in 2020 and to exceed £10m within 2 -3 years. In 2020, Switzerlandbased Georg Fischer (GF) made a

Created in 2015, Oxford Flow designs and manufactures innovative pressure control equipment using technology developed at Oxford University. Their main products are the pressure reducing valves (PRVs) and gas pressure regulators, which were engineered to be smaller and lighter than competing technology and can significantly reduce costs for the Energy, Water and Process industries.
