Knowledge is Power A Home for Memories, White Wall the Hundert at Berlin Fashion Week the Hundert at Startup Events Damien Elroy Vignaux Sophia Schwan, Luka Balint Making of... Shooting Locations Mediapartners , Thank You Berlin Fashion Map Imprint / Legal

Dear Readers, We are happy to present to you “the Hundert - Startups meet Fashion”, which is by far the most ambitious and glamorous issue of our young magazine series to date. Berlin is, without a doubt, Germany’s creative epicentre. Unfortunately, however, each creative scene here seems to be doing its own thing. It is high time to change this! For this reason, this issue of “the Hundert” brings together two creative heavyweights of Berlin that at first glance, may seem unrelated: the Startup scene and the Fashion scene. The vehicle of this collaboration was a simple idea: to let one hundred representatives of Berlin’s Startup-scene showcase the collections of one hundred top Berlin fashion labels - staged as an elaborate fashion shoot with the fantastic photographer Damien Vignaux along with the styling team surrounding Sophia Schwan. Hence “the Hundert - Startups meet Fashion” became, above all, a journal of encounters, of leaving the beaten tracks and discovering new horizons. Whoever enjoys travelling is familiar with the power of new encounters - especially when they happen unexpectedly. They enrich our lives, put a smile on our faces, remain in our memory, inspire and change us - often permanently. As publishers, we did not only find the synergy between the two fields interesting; the peculiarities and differences were just as exciting. During our conversations, we realized that both the startup and fashion scenes did not know much about each other. There are, however, many similarities between them such as the entrepreneurial vision, the persistence and the steadfast belief in their goal. Therefore, a deep conviction ripened within us; we can unlock Berlin’s true potential by combining the city’s creative scenes. Single tones could suddenly merge in harmony. Working on “the Hundert - Startups meet Fashion” was not a walk in the park, its execution turned out to be more complex than expected - not least because we had to coordinate two hundred instead of the usual one hundred participants. The greatest joy was to realize that the tremendous effort was really worth it! A project, whose realization seemed utopian, pushed our small publishing house to its limits - and a magnificent team ensured with blood, sweat and tears and many sleepless nights that we cross those limits. As the German saying goes: Your duties make you grow… While I consciously chose to refrain from using names in this editorial, I do want to take this opportunity to point out someone, without whom this project would have not been possible in the

first place: my colleague Katarzyna Oldziejewska, who made the success of “the Hundert” her personal moon-landing and who has pursued it with a unique commitment, determination and perfectionism from the very beginning. Kata, I can say with full conviction that this issue is mainly your masterpiece. Thank you for everything!! I only want to add now that we hope you all will enjoy this journey through creative worlds. Until next time on this or the other side of the horizon! Yours, Jan Thomas Editor in Chief, “the Hundert”

We would appreciate your feedback and, in particular, your recommendations sent via E-mail, Facebook or Twitter. Make sure to inform your good friends and colleagues. Our kindest thanks in advance!

THE HUNDERT // STATEMENTS

STATEMENTS ON

THE BERLIN FASHION SCENE I love Berlin. No other European city has such a great influx of international creatives, because it is a stomping ground for design, art and innovation. Berlin has quickly developed into an internationally relevant fashion capital with great economic impact. At each international season kick-off, Berlin attracts thousands of fashion-curious visitors. As a digital catalyst, Berlin also developed into the epicentre of the international Startup scene. Platforms such as re:publica, Plug&Play and The Hundert give the growing scene a voice. Stagnation costs more than investing in innovation and the future.

I believe that Berlin is one of the few fashion metropolises, where young talents still have a chance to make their way without investors. That’s also the reason why so many talents choose Berlin to study in. It’s a pity that some of the big names left Berlin despite the German market being one of their biggest. If you compare the level of publicity of designers showcasing in Berlin to the big names - Paris, New York or even London - there is still a lot to do. On the other hand, Berlin doesn’t stand behind the big cities in terms of shopping experience and selection.

ANITA TILLMANN, PREMIUM EXHIBITIONS

The evolution of Berlin has seen the city establish itself as a new Mecca for fashion crowds from around the world. While Paris is defined by its chic, high-end style - much like the streets of Tokyo are by their overwhelming craziness - what defines Germany’s capital is its laid-back attitude towards fashion, which lures and entices visitors desperately seeking inspiration. Global fashion players have found a new playground in Berlin, where trends are constantly being established and adapted almost instantaneously. From Normcore to Vintage - Berliners have adhered for years without ever giving their style a name or labelling it as a trend. They practice but they don’t preach.

The Berlin fashion scene is constantly evolving. Berlin has a large population of creative designers but we must now have patience, because the progress in this industry takes time. The existing potential is enormous and the prospects are good. Berlin is going its own way, even as a fashion metropolis. VOLKER TIETGENS, MICHALSKY HOLDING Berlin is the international hot spot, standing for creativity, diversity and change. This heady mixture of music, film, art and fashion, plus the special Berlin spirit is what attracts creative people from all over the world. And this is exactly what Berlin’s fashion scene reflects: it is bold, creative and visionary. There are many young, aspiring fashion designers in Berlin with lots of talent. They can develop their huge potential optimally here. One vision of the future presents a combination of fashion with the digital economy and the new technologies with innovative solutions - a fantastic opportunity for start-up hub Berlin! NADINE JÜDES, BERLIN PARTNER Berlin’s dynamic fashion scene is championed by a growing number of supportive journalists. This of course is necessary to spread the creative message, but does not automatically build a bridge into sales. On top of good media coverage and in order to grow the business successfully, designers also need courageous retailers and financially strong entrepreneurs who are willing to give new ideas a platform. This platform should not be mistaken as a charity event, but should be seen as an important proposition for the High Street customer who is looking for orientation in a mass market. OLIVER MACCONNELL, HTW BERLIN

CLAUDIA RETH, ZALANDO

HERBERT HOFMANN, VOO STORE No other city has altered so radically in the last two decades than Berlin. This constant change process, that still takes place, sets large amounts of creative energy free – which naturally reflects in fashion, too. This makes Berlin to one of the most thrilling trend metropolises. ULI MORANT, ME.STYLE Berlin and fashion are a perfect match. Here, young and established fashion designers find an environment where they can experiment, exchange experiences and give free reign to their creativity. On top of that, the Fashion Week with about 200 thousand specialist-visitors and an economic performance of €200 million annually speaks for itself. JÜRGEN SCHEPERS, KREATIVWIRTSCHAFT Berlin benefits a lot from the interplay of creative enterprises, culture and digital economy. This unique mix is the reason for Berlin’s special appeal and for the growing digital and fashion scene. Berlin stands for talents and inspiration. TANJA MÜHLHANS, SENATE FOR ECONOMICS, TECHNOLOGY AND RESEARCH

Having 100+ Berlin-based fashion labels - ranging from startups to established firms - shows how vibrant Berlin’s fashion scene is. But the city is no longer only where fashion design comes from. Successful fashion trade fairs and a growing number of highclass fashion stores prove that Berlin has also become a place for fashion-business and is on its way to playing a trendsetter-role in some fields. Becoming THE place where high-class designers for sustainable fashion meet buyers and consumers could be largely what differentiates Berlin from other fashion cities.

From party-metropolis to the world’s most vibrant creative hub – Berlin’s journey continues. The former “poor but sexy” capital gains momentum as genuine creativity becomes the new global-money. At the forefront of fashion, Panorama Berlin supports young fashion start-ups and connects fresh talent with corporate power. As fashion is always looking forward, we are proud to be involved in ‘The Hundert’ project and welcome the following style entrepreneurs. JÖRG WICHMANN, PANORAMA BERLIN

INTRODUCTION TO THE AXEL SPRINGER PLUG AND PLAY ACCELERATOR Launched in 2013, the Axel Springer Plug and Play Accelerator is a Berlin-based accelerator aimed at trailblazing digital entrepreneurs. Axel Springer Plug and Play is more than just an accelerator. From day one, it opens the door to global opportunities and creates connections to an international network spanning Europe and Silicon Valley. Three times a year, the accelerator team holds a three-month-long program in a representative space in the heart of Berlin. In addition to individual coaching, mentoring, workshops, networking opportunities, events, and â‚Ź25,000 in support, the program especially stands out due to the two powerful companies behind it. Participating start-ups reap the benefits of close connections to Axel Springer, a German publishing powerhouse with myriad success stories on its record, as well as to the Plug and Play Tech Center in Silicon Valley. An optional three-month extension at the Plug and Play Tech Center adds another dimension to the program, giving teams the chance to learn first-hand from their American forebears and collect American investment. The program ends with a Demo Day, where start-ups have the opportunity to pitch to an elite audience of local and international venture capital firms for additional seed and Series A funding.

INTERNATIONALIZATION

FOLLOW-UP FINANCING

Since July 2014, the Axel Springer Plug and Play accelerator has become even more international: Seven of the eight companies of the fourth program cycle are from abroad: Israel, Ireland and Austria. After this great success Axel Springer Plug and Play is planning to strengthen the connections to the Israeli startup hub even more and will host another Pitching Day in Tel Aviv in January 2015. Furthermore Axel Springer Plug and Play is excited to now connect more with the CEE startup scene and hosted the first Krakow Pitching Day in September to introduce the accelerator program and to present Berlin‘s attractiveness for young companies.

Meanwhile, many of the Axel Springer Plug and Play Alumni have received follow-up financing from external investors. Investments were made in startups such as Number26 (formerly Papayer), Zenmate, embraase, Jobspotting, and truffls. This means that a high percentage of the participants from the first three rounds of the program have received subsequent financing.

KLAUS SIEGERS CEO at Weberbank, a Berlin-based Private Bank offering a broad range of financial services for entrepreneurs.

In this edition, the Hundert is focusing on good design and the people who are responsible for creating it – a cause that we’re delighted to support as partners of the Hundert. That’s because good design and good consultancy have a lot in common. Design is always customised and can be tailored to the point of perfection. You can always recognize excellent design not just by the designer’s signature but also by the way it reflects the personality and goals of the particular client. It’s often the details that make all the difference. And it’s exactly the same with consultancy. Investment strategies are tailor-made to suit each individual’s personal circumstances according to their needs and objectives. It’s essential to determine whether, say, the focus should be on accumulating or preserving assets, whether plans include any business projects, or what type of risks investors need to consider. So whether we’re talking about design or about consultancy, it’s ultimately up to the people who determine the quality. And it’s our awareness of this that makes Weberbank different. I hope you enjoy this latest edition of the Hundert, in which you can read all about people who are genuinely inspirational. Best wishes,

STARTUPS + FASHION

THE BERLIN WAY

Fashion represents the main share of the creative industries in Berlin. With 3,500 companies and 19,200 fashion sector employees, the German capital has developed into a trendsetting fashion center. Young, creative companies receive extensive support and incentives. In Berlin alone, ten fashion schools are turning young talents into fashion designers.

Start-ups and fashion – in Berlin, Germany’s start-up capital, the two themes are inseparable! A total of 43,000 companies were established here in 2013 alone. The digital industry is not the only sector to experience a start-up boom – Berlin’s creative industries are also full of start-ups with over 1,000 companies from the creative sector being created annually. Hardly any other city is home to so many young entrepreneurs who are eager to make their mark in the areas of music, fashion and life style. Berlin attracts creative minds with an entrepreneurial spirit from around the globe, providing them with the best possible infrastructure for their companies. The city’s unique quality of life and creative spirit contribute to the “start-up-friendly” climate.

Berlin’s Senate Department for Economics, Technology and Research has initiated a fashion competition called “Start Your Fashion Business”. With monetary awards and coaching, it aims to support young fashion designers in Berlin as they establish their labels. Within the program, “Opening New Markets”, the Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Technology and Research finances six joint presentations of Berlin-based fashion designers during the Paris and New York Fashion Week. In addition, up to twelve shows and presentations are funded annually during the Berlin Fashion Week. Furthermore, fashion labels are assisted with the acquisition of industrial and retail partners, and investor readiness workshops are in preparation. Investitionsbank Berlin (IBB) assists them with micro loans of up to €25,000 involving a minimum of red tape and the Coaching BONUS program. To support startup activity in all sectors of the German

And Berliners are constantly launching new online publications featuring the fashion scene, including fashion blogs and online magazines.

The Fashion Week is responsible for a large share of Berlin’s fashion sector revenues of around €3 billion. According to a model calculation made by the economists at IBB, the semi-annual week devoted to fashion generates additional GDP of around €120 million. The fashion spectrum ranges from high-priced couture and excellent tailoring to organic fashion and street wear, all from unique pieces to entire collections. In addition to women’s wear labels, around twenty fashion labels focusing on men have started up in Berlin in recent years. The accessory and shoe sectors are also gaining in significance. Alongside the labels, fashion companies are sprouting up throughout the capital. They follow a new approach to sales: curated shopping. With innovative tools such as the Virtual Dressing Tool from fits.me, fashionistas can leave the dressing room behind and see if a certain piece fits or flatters by trying it on online. Fashion start-ups such as Modomoto and Outfittery have specialized in putting together stylish complete outfits for

UDK Fashion design at the UDK differs from the other universities because it’s just one part of a complete course. Together with “product design”, these classes build the main course: “design”. This offers many opportunities for the students, who can work in different workshops to experiment and find out how to express themselves. It is not only about textile but also about materials like wood, porcelain, metal etc. Julian Zigerli and Mads Dinesen are just two graduates who prove that this freedom creates artists who can succeed in many jobs in the art and fashion world.

HTW Students graduating from HTW have a wide field of job-opportunities to choose from. With a department for design and culture, the course of study trains the students not only to become designers like Hien Le or Sissi Goetze but to also be product managers and so on. The practically based courses are just one part of the education, which is completed with classes about marketing, management and business studies – all relating to fashion. Creativity and working innovatively is one of the fundamental HTW aspects. This is what studying is about: a passion for fashion.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

MD.H To study fashion design at the MD.H is not only about producing collections but also to learn about the medial transformation processes of fashion. Basics of designing are as important as theory. Therefore, the courses also cover classes like marketing, fabric-production and visual communication so that the students are prepared for everything they will face on the market. Also, the MD.H communicates the importance of ecological and social responsibility, which is important for the plan-, production- and communication-progress, and the future!

Fashionstreet-Berlin untangles the diversity of the German capital’s institutions of higher fashioneducation. What we discovered: a lot of potential and many opportunities! Author: Christina Birke

AMD Studying at AMD does not just mean learning about trends and fabrics – it also means understanding what fashion is. Working creatively and innovatively is as important as getting to know the history of fashion and experiencing looks behind the scenes. The practical and theoretical methods are taught by people from the industry who can really pass on what it means to work in the fashion-world. This does not only apply to the course of study in “fashion design”, but also to all other courses offered here such as “fashion journalism” and “fashion management”.

OSZ

THE HUNDERT // ARTICLE

The OSZ teaches everything that is important to know when creating fashion. Sewing, cutting and technical techniques for clothes design form the basis of the main classes that are part of the myriad of courses specialising in fashion design offered at this school. Although fashion design is not yet a course at the OSZ - it will be offered as a three-year apprenticeship at the training college from September 2015 - the specific studies train the students in the best possible way so that OSZ-graduates can start a successful career in the fashion-industry.

LETTE-VEREIN The Lette-Verein is an important training centre for people who want to work in the fashion-industry and become a certified fashion-designer. The department for fashion design teaches the know-how on how to plan collections, recognize trends and how to create wearable fashion. The main classes are theoretically and practically based and train the students to work in the business to become freelancers, costume or fashion designers like the known graduates; Kostas Murkudis or Frank Wojczewski, who is the head-designer at Windsor.

ESMOD ESMOD is globally known for its unique and innovative take on teaching the global fashion trade. Learning the craftsmanship of fashion design is one of the biggest parts of the courses at ESMOD because it prepares its students for success in the best possible way. Another perfect preparation is ESMOD’s huge network of fashion-companies, recruitment agencies and well known graduates like Marina Hoermannseder, Alexandra Fischer-Roehler and Johanna Kühl from Kaviar Gauche – evident proof that the ESMOD methods work!

WEISSENSEE KUNSTHOCHSCHULE The Weißensee Kunsthochschule (college of art) offers a lot of freedom to its students. The education connects working practically and theoretically on a high and real level: teaching the specific and technical basics of fashion design goes hand in hand with seminars about art and culture. This prepares the students not only for working as a fashion designer but also for many other fields of work. Nevertheless, designing and creating builds the centre of the artistic course, where talents like Michael Sontag and Bobby Kolade started their career.

About Fashionstreet Berlin As a rather young magazine, Fashionstreet Berlin understands the struggles of an up-and-coming designer. This is why we are committed to not only covering internationally active designers, but young graduates as well. Therefore, we are very well-informed about Berlin‘s different educational institutions and what makes them unique. With our „New Blood Berlin“ award, we aim to create a stepping stone for new talents. We see the fashion industry as a fascinating melting pot of cultures, philosophies, visions and dreams. www.fashionstreet-berlin.de 87

DAMIEN ELROY VIGNAUX

Damien Vignaux is a French photographer and director based in Berlin. Together with his fiancé, Jacqueline Szymczak, he runs a studio for fashion productions in film and photography, while still working in the fields of illustration and motion design. Their highly praised personal visual touch, and a predilection for artistic approaches, led them to work for clients such as YSL, Adidas, Nike, Universal, MTV, Redbull... and their love for experimenting together often leads to rare and unique results, giving their project a timeless feel.

“We know that new projects are always a challenge. But we have hardly ever had to handle so many shoots, in so many interesting and different places, in such a short time. This project with the team behind “The Hundert” was a very exciting 10-day journey that allowed us to meet more people and discover more locations than we usually do in 6 months! It was definitely a unique and enriching experience to get the chance, whilst shooting, to talk about all the creative‘s and investor‘s original business initiatives, and on top of that, to be able to collaborate with 100 fresh Berlin labels. The Hundert did fantastic job bringing all these people and labels together because it certainly was a crazy idea! We are very thankful for this project and sincerely wish you will enjoy the results of our work!” www.elroy.fr // hello@elroy.fr

Media partnerships with:

We really enjoyed producing the latest issue of “the Hundert” and we would like to acknowledge the many helpers, without whom this current issue would not have been possible. Thank you to our photographic team. Together with his delightful assistant, Jacqueline Szymczak, the remarkable Damien Vignaux was responsible for all of the one hundred photo shoots in this issue. It was a magnificent collaboration and words alone will not match your performance! Equally, we would like to thank Sophia Schwan (with her loyal dog) and Luka Balint. Your styling and make-up skills transformed our photos to genuine compositions. Our sincerest thanks also to Balázs Tarsoly and his team from Operation Butterfly; Susanna Pozzi for yet another brilliant design and yet another wonderful collaboration, Johnnie Clapper for his watchful eye and steady hand, Lilian Eßer, Riccardo Volpato and Simon Gottwalles for support and the 100 covers - it is (as always) a pleasure to work with you all. Much gratitude also goes to our jury for their expertise and uncomplicated collaboration. We would not have found our way through the thicket of Berlin’s fashion world without your support. In this context, we would especially like to thank Anita Tillmann from Premium Exhibitions who significantly supported us in the composition of the jury. We do not want to miss the opportunity to thank Hung Yu Huang, who was responsible for the collection of Berlin’s fashion labels. This issue of “the Hundert” was produced in premium locations for the first time. Thus, we want to express our gratitude for the provision of the premises which would not have been possible without our contact persons Christiane Anstötz and Ingvi Carlsson from Swissôtel, Andrea Grassow from Honigmond Hotel, Tugba Temel from 25hours Hotel Bikini Berlin, Stephan Lehmann from Mietstudio Torstrasse, Lena Günther from Malzfabrik, Dennis Merkin from Hotel Zoo and Rocco von Steht from The Grand. In this context, we also thank Sascha Wolf from Außergewöhnlich Berlin, Johannes Schwark and Johanna Schirm from Designhotels as well as Dennis Boehres from PopUp Berlin for the friendly establishment of contacts. A big thank you also goes to the team from Axel Springer Media Entrepreneurs: Uli Schmitz, Jan Bechler, Dirk Walsh, Catharina Dieckmann, Daniela Voss, Ulrike Schonert, Julia Spors, Philipp Stöhr and Florian Reinartz. All of them put an incredible effort into our joint-release party. Obviously, we cannot look into the future but we now firmly believe that we have put together one of the best parties of the year. As always, we would most notably like to thank our sponsors and advertising partners without whom we would not have been able to realize “the Hundert”. For this issue, we would like to point out Nadine Jüdes, Henning Ravn, Beatrice Vogel from Berlin Partner, Ingrid Walther, Cornelia Yzer, Tanja Mülhans, Claudia Hamboch, Katrin Tobies from the Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Technology and Research, Tim Dümichen and Marius Sternberg from KPMG, Chris Bartz from Weberbank, Moritz Baumann and Michael Prasch from Audi, as well as Florian Kiener from Zalando. Same goes for Steffen Setzer and Manuela Wachs from our printing partner Laserline for the reliable cooperation; Zoe Remund for proofreading, Christina Birke for her article about fashion schools, Kristina Hellhake und Sandra Schumann, Konstantin Iwanow, Dita Perzhaku and all our media and event partners. Of course a special thank you to all of the participating start-up entrepreneurs who embarked on this crazy idea (and, almost without exception, were punctual for the shootings) and thank you also to all of the fashion labels and PR agencies that provided us with their collections in spite of their own hectic schedules. Last but not least, we would like to thank you, our readers. You ensured that “the Hundert” has become what it is today. THANKS TO ALL!
