Sinfonia Cymru

Summer Sessions

Osez!

Sinfonia Cymru concludes its 2009 National Tour of Wales at The Riverfront with a programme of classics from the chamber orchestral repertoire. The orchestra will be joined by sensational Welsh pianist Llyr Williams, an artist with whom the orchestra enjoys a special relationship. Fresh from recitals at the Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall and Concertgebouw, Williams’ performance of Chopin’s masterpiece promises to be something quite extraordinary.

Open Mic Night and Boutique Market

‘Osez!’ is a remarkably successful outdoor dance project which came to The Riverfront last year for the first ever UK version of the event. This year, five Canadian dancers and seven from Wales will work with choreographers Louise Bedard from Quebec and Sean Tuan John from Wales to create a new dance each day of the week. The music will be live, too.

Programme Chopin’s Piano Concerto No 2 in F Minor Also works by Mozart and Mendelssohn www.sinfoniacymru.co.uk

Boutique stalls adorn the foyer from 5pm until 11pm and music will fill the air out on the terrace from 7pm until 11pm. All types of performers are welcome from comedians to poets and musicians, to perform and all you need to do is turn up on the night. If you’re a creative person and would like to sell your wares, be it hand-made jewellery, bespoke fashion or something completely unusual, please get in touch to pre-book a stall. There will be special offers on food and drink. So come along and chill out whilst enjoying some local performers and bag yourself a boutique bargain. For more information contact; rachel.kinchin@newport.gov.uk

Performed on the quayside around The Riverfront, each day will be different. Each performance will also draw on the previous day’s experience, so you can follow the threads of the piece if you come on separate days. Come along to see Newport in a new light, and to enjoy the fruits of this international exchange. The café and bar will be open. Meet up in the foyer of The Riverfront and the dancers will lead you outside. www.osezdance.com Part of ‘Discover Dance’ at The Riverfront.

Wardrobe Diaries

How Green was My Valley

Playing Burton

Presented by Citrus Arts Directed by James Roberts

Independent Ballet Wales. By Richard Llewellyn

Theatre Tours International in association with Joshua Richards Productions

In a rich mix of aerial and acrobatic skills, dance, honest imagination and quirky humour; the Citrus crew move up, down and around a wall of 20ft climbing poles and two tonnes of discarded clothing. ‘Wardrobe Diaries’ is based on those Sunday afternoon clothing clear-out moments that remind you of not going to bed without your favourite Spiderman pyjamas, things that belonged to Grandparents, the costumed Hen/Stag-night you had last summer and clothes you bought, but never wore. Featuring the music of Ted Barnes (composer to Beth Orton), the lively, soulful beats of Mr Scruff and a cast of top-end circus and dance artists, ‘Wardrobe Diaries’ is set to become Wales’ new must-see show. Truly, a Rumble in the Jumble.

‘Critics Circle Award’ winning company Independent Ballet Wales present a breathtaking version of one of Wales’ best known stories. Based on the bestselling novel by Richard Llewellyn, an Oscar winning film and an authentic BBC Wales television series, this outstanding new production features choreography from ‘Creative Wales Award’ winner Darius James and some of the best young dancers in Europe. ‘MacMillan Young Composer of the Year’ Thomas Hewitt Jones provides an atmospheric and stunning new commissioned score. Thomas worked with the company in 2008 providing the mesmerising music for ‘Under Milk Wood’. www.welshballet.co.uk

BALLET

The great Welsh roaring boyo, one of the most powerful actors and personalities of the 20th Century, Richard Burton appeared to waste his talent, squander his millions and drink himself to an early death. He was the most nominated actor never to win an Oscar. Presented in Burton’s own words and those of the great writers he admired, Welshman Josh Richards reincarnates both the actor and the myth in a moving, powerfully charming, deeply profound performance. And have things changed? As we witness this passion fuelled genius crash to a vodka sodden wreck, we ask how steep is the price we still demand our idols to pay? Directed by Burton’s great nephew, Guy Masterson, Mark Jenkins’ play was first presented in Edinburgh in ‘94. www.theatretoursinternational.com Dates: Wednesday 23 September at 7.30pm Prices: £8, Reductions £6, Schools £5 Venue: Theatre

Shakespeare Schools Festival

The Searchers

Rhod Gilbert

“We are such stuff as dreams are made on” The UK’s largest youth drama festival returns to Newport in October 2009. “The isle is full of noises, sounds and sweet airs, that give delight.” This year the Festival is hosted by 65 theatres across the country mounting 500 productions of Shakespeare’s plays. The Shakespeare Schools Festival works in partnership with the National Theatre to support 10,000 young people on their journey to become Shakespearean players in professional theatres. Join four local schools each night as they stage four different half-hour plays. Details of participating schools and their performance night can be obtained from the Box Office.

John McNally, Frank Allen, Spencer James and Eddie Rothe

Rhod Gilbert & the Cat that looked like Nicholas Lyndhurst

With such classic hits as ‘Sweets For My Sweet’; ‘Needles and Pins’; ‘Don’t Throw Your Love Away’ and ‘When You Walk In The Room’, The Searchers have contributed enormously in establishing the UK as the world’s leading nation in the music industry. With total record sales well in excess of 40 million, their recent compilation album ‘The Very Best of The Searchers’, which includes all of their hits, has seen a recent welcome and deserved return to the UK charts. The Searchers return to The Riverfront with their fully self-contained concert which includes all their famous hits, plus many of their original album recordings, B-sides and a selection of other collector and well known favourites.

Following last year’s sell-out tour and sensational performances on ‘The Royal Variety Performance’, ‘Live At The Apollo’, and ‘Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow’, the Welsh Wonder is back on the road with a brand new show. Last year, he punched a shop-assistant over the duvet tog-rating system and went berserk over a mince pie. This year Gilbert’s given his show a ridiculous title just to annoy someone in Canterbury. Is he, as he believes, a visionary in a sea of closed minds, or has he, as everyone else believes, got anger-management problems? Total sell-out, Edinburgh 2005-2008. ‘If.’ Comedy Nominee 2008. The Big Read

Dead Cat Bounce

Salomé

The Big Read is a fantastic event for the whole family. Throughout the day there will be plenty of book-filled, hands-on fun for both adults and children.

Presented by the Volcano Theatre Company

By Sound Affairs. Music by Charlie Barber

Boing! A dead cat bounce is a term used by traders in the finance industry to describe a pattern where a spectacular decline in the price of a stock is immediately followed by a small temporary rise before resuming its downward movement. It is derived from the notion that “even a dead cat will bounce if it falls from a great height”. An informal performance with three wise men who discuss the modern world, the economic and cultural crisis and the possible futures suggested by the ‘experts’. This hilarious onstage think-tank culminates in a thorough, bizarre and surreal guide as to how a person may ‘survive and thrive’ in the uncertain and scary world that is the future. Directed by John Hardwick. Featuring Paul Davies, Eric MacLennan and Philip Ralph.

Sound Affairs celebrates its 20th birthday with a percussion concert featuring the 1923 film Salomé, starring the tempestuous, Russian-born actress Alla Nazimova. Inspired by traditional Arabic ensembles, acclaimed composer Charlie Barber’s new score is performed live by four percussionists with vocal samples and electronics. Adapted from the controversial Oscar Wilde play, the film Salomé is as equally notorious with an abundance of sumptuously fantastic visuals. Following the biblical story of King Herod and his unbridled lust for his young stepdaughter, it is Salomé’s desire for Jokanaan (John the Baptist) that causes her to dance before Herod... The evening promises an exotic cocktail of rare silent cinema, sensuality, melodrama and dramatic percussion...

There will be a wide range of talks from authors including Trevor Fishlock, Bernard Knight and Dai Smith and local up and coming Author, Mathew Scott. Workshops will include Creative Writing, Arts and Crafts, Storytelling, Poetry and more! Want to find out how to get your work published? Do you want to know who wrote the first crime story? Have you ever wondered who creates the illustrations on the front of books? Do you wonder where Authors get their creative ideas from? Would you like to know how to make your own cartoons and characters for stories? If so, The Big Read at The Riverfront is the place for you!

Duco invites you to follow a couple’s journey from nervous flirtations to physically charged exchanges accompanied by Warren’s compositions played live on stage. “Chloe Loftus’s ‘‘Scuse Me’ was a model of effective pace, confidence, grace and accomplished performance... her assured elegance and presence is something to look forward to.” David Adams Huw Warren - “One of the UK’s truly independent spirits” The Guardian

A story of adventures great and small and of the writer who imagined them all. Here, in a unique and delightful style, Hijinx brings to life the weird and wonderful world of Gulliver’s Travels, with its tiny Lilliputians, giants, mad scientists and even talking horses! Inspired by Jonathan Swift’s fantastical satire, this biting new play explores the relationship between the mysterious Dr. Gulliver and his tormented creator Swift, as they travel through the writer’s unruly imagination and try not to lose their way. Capturing the humour and darkness of a man struggling to survive in an absurd world, this classic story is as fresh and relevant as ever!

Andy Parsons

She Stoops to Conquer

The Europeans

Citizens!

A Mappa Mundi | Theatr Mwldan | Torch Theatre Co-production. Directed by Peter Doran

Presented by Vista Theatre. By Howard Barker

From BBC 2’s ‘Mock the Week’ & ‘Q.I.’, BBC1’s ‘Live At The Apollo’, Radio 2’s ‘Parsons and Naylor’s Pull-Out Sections’ and star of The Comedy Store’s ‘Cutting Edge’, Andy Parsons is back with a brand new show for 2009. Andy’s delivery and style are unique and his jokes are clever, substantial and beautifully crafted. And very, very funny. This is political comedy without the leaflet, satire without the lecture, ridicule without the sanctimony - all brushed with a bit of showbiz glitter. You will leave fulfilled, energised, emotionally uplifted and, maybe, a little bit giddy - come on, you owe it to yourself. “Perfectly calibrated... the King of Political Comedy” The Guardian www.andyparsons.co.uk

The Europeans dramatises the conflict between public duty and private suffering, projected against the backdrop of war between the Christian and Turkish Empires in the 17th Century. The Siege of Vienna, 1683. The Ottoman Turks have finally been defeated. The hero of the Siege, General Starhemberg, prepares to welcome back the victorious returning Monarchy. Meanwhile Katrin, a teenage victim of a war atrocity, prepares to give testimony to a corrupt priest. The Emperor attempts to rebuild the city and its culture but is soon drawn into conflict with Starhemberg and Katrin. The Europeans is a powerful, poetic and exhilarating experience brought to you by students on the BA(Hons) Performing Arts degree at the University of Wales, Newport. Warning: This play contains scenes of a sexual nature and language that some may find offensive.

Hot on the heels of their recent success at The Riverfront, ‘The Canterbury Tales’, the irrepressible Mappa Mundi invite you to a sumptuous society romp with Oliver Goldsmiths classic 18th Century farce ‘She Stoops to Conquer’. Expect larger than life characters, big laughs and even bigger hairpieces... With an outrageous mix of secret elopements and nocturnal confusions, this satirical poke at polite society paints a ribald and hilarious portrait of life and love in the town and country. Cult Welsh theatre company Mappa Mundi have built a reputation for gloriously irreverent, populist and accessible adaptations of classic theatrical and literary works and you can expect an original and flamboyant take on Goldsmith’s classic social comedy.
