Welcome / Croeso Summer 2009 at The Riverfront

We are very pleased that The Riverfront, now well into its fifth year of operation, continues to increase the amount of activity taking place and the numbers of people attending events here. Following another successful panto season, when nearly 20,000 came to see ‘Sleeping Beauty’, we have now completed the planning for our next production for the festive period. On 1 December 2009 ‘Peter Pan’ will open, starring the irrepressible Brian Hibbard as Hook, and tickets are already going fast. To get the best seats, make sure you book early! More immediately, the summer programme goes from family entertainment, ‘Bink and the Hairy Fairy’, to Hip-Hop dance and theatre: ‘Exit and Out’ in April and ‘Flhip Flhop’ in May. Also included are the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Tony Jacobs, The Blues Band and Foster and Allen in the music series; Diversions and Independent Ballet Wales in Dance and the welcome return of theatre piece, ‘Stones in his Pockets’. There is a lot more in this brochure too, so do read on! At the end of June we will be holding our annual Open Weekend, which showcases the building and all the classes and other activities that take place within it. It is a time to experience The Riverfront in a different way, and the previous events have been very successful and enjoyable. The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari

Stones in his Pockets

London Mozart Players

The West End Hit Back on Tour 2009!

The London Mozart Players brings a special performance to The Riverfront. Ten musicians will perform live music to the silent film ‘The Cabinet of Dr Caligari’. Composer Lynne Plowman has written a new score to accompany this fantastic film. ‘The Cabinet of Dr Caligari’ is regarded as one of the most influential German expressionist films and also as the first true horror film. Made in 1920, it tells the tale of Dr Caligari and his sleepwalking friend Cesare, who is an attraction at a local carnival and he prophesises someone’s death. The villagers chase Dr Caligari and Cesare as they suspect their involvement with the murder. The plot twists and turns to bring the film to an unexpected end. It will make for an entertaining evening combining great music and great cinema.

By Marie Jones Back by popular demand, this wonderful comedy by Marie Jones has won numerous Theatre Awards including the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, as well as three Tony nominations on Broadway. After five fabulous years in the West End and numerous sell out tours, ‘Stones in his Pockets’ returns to The Riverfront for two nights to delight audiences this spring.

Another fabulous family musical from the creators of ‘The Witch’s Bogey’. Lord Murkor is a wicked elf. An incredibly powerful, wicked elf with an incredibly evil and sinister plan, and if that plan works then soon the royal family will be dead and Murkor will rule the Kingdom of the Elves in their place! The only chance the Elves have is if Bink can think of a way to save them... But thinking is not exactly Bink’s strong point. Can the loyalty of his friends, the love of the princess or a wonderful sprite secret help Bink defeat Lord Murkor, or is he going to need something altogether more magical...and just a teensy bit hairier?

Rannel Theatre Company present this hilarious and exhilarating performance combining the elements of Hip-Hop and comedy theatre to create something thrillingly unique. Curiosity meets one-upmanship as the dynamic duo of Matt Bailey and Joey D compete to entertain each other in an attempt to forget about the monotony of everyday working life. The story and music of Chet Baker, told by Mike Maran and directed by Patrick Sandford. It’s 1961 and Chet Baker is in jail in Lucca. Voted best trumpet player in the world only five years before – now he’s doing time in an Italian jail for drug offences. Italians strolling around the town walls stop and listen to the sound of Chet’s golden trumpet wafting through the prison bars. Chet shared his prison cell with a storyteller. The storyteller became his friend. 28 years later, Chet shared a hotel room in Amsterdam with his friend. That was the night Chet Baker died. Only the storyteller knows what really happened. He knows the whole story – and now he’s telling it. With live music by Colin Steele and Dave Milligan.

Walk the Dead Dog

Pete Brown & The Volunteers

Skin Deep

Volcano presents Mr & Mrs Clark

For the most part of the last 20 years, Pete Brown has produced, played, engineered, written, lived and breathed music...in all its creative guises.

Vesica

‘Walk the Dead Dog’ is a macabre cabaret that delves into the world of culture and entertainment, to see how the spotlight affects those who live in the shadow. Expect a musical freakshow with laughs, masks, dummies and real people who sing and dance. Unknown Pleasures is a series of experiments in theatre brought to you by Volcano Theatre Company, Taliesin Arts Centre and Swansea Metropolitan University. This innovative partnership brings together Wales’s finest artists and its best emerging talents, creating adventurous new work that laughs in the face of commercial pressure and tweaks the nose of convention. Unknown Pleasures aims to nurture and inspire the next generation of theatre artists and spread the tentacles of risk and innovation across Wales and beyond. Not surprising really since he comes from a musical heritage. His sister Sam, had a world-wide No. 1 with ‘Stop’ and frequently appeared with Jools Holland, his legendary father Joe has never stopped playing in 50 years while his late mother Vicki was an esteemed singer both in the UK and abroad. Finally Pete has found time to record his own album, aptly titled ‘Not Before Time’. The CD is Pete’s first foray into the world of solo artistry...and not a minute too soon. In today’s climate of canned, labelled and processed music, this is one musician who’s totally the real deal!

April The Wrestler (15) Monday 6, Tuesday 7, 7.45pm Director: Darren Aronofsky Starring: Mickey Rourke, Evan Rachel-Wood, Marisa Tomei USA, 2008, 1 hour 49 minutes

Vicky Cristina Barcelona (12A) Monday 20, Tuesday 21, 11am* & 7.45pm, Wednesday 22, 1pm Director: Woody Allen Starring: Rebecca Hall, Scarlett Johansson, Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz USA, 2008, 1 hour 39 minutes

With its amusing script, good performances and its tongue-in-cheek, knockabout nature this spicy comedy is a distinct return to form for Allen. When two young Americans with opposing ideas of love and romance encounter a laid back Latin seducer, events take a surprising turn, then get crazier still when his mad ex-wife Maria enters the picture. Great performances all round from a fine cast with Bardem and Cruz sending themselves up as the sexy, volatile Spaniards, with evident gusto and consummate ease. Winner of the Best Supporting Actress Oscar Please note: Tuesday 21, 11am is a ‘Bring Baby Cinema’ screening only.

A funny, powerful, affecting drama with Mickey Rourke in the role of a lifetime as Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson, a dead-beat pugilist making ends meet on the wrestling circuit. The result is the most brutally honest performance of the year as he wrestles for his conscience, his soul and his life at the same time. Winner of the BAFTA and Golden Globe Award for Best Actor Nominated for Oscars for Best Actor & Best Supporting Actress

The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari Tuesday 28, 7.30pm The London Mozart Players brings a special performance to The Riverfront.

May Milk (15) Monday 11, Tuesday 12, 7.45pm Director: Gus Van Sant Starring: Sean Penn, James Franco, Josh Brolin, Diego Luna USA, 2008, 2 hours 8 minutes

This year’s ‘Brokeback Mountain’ is a deeply moving portrait of the inspirational Harvey Milk, the first openly gay American politician, who was assassinated in San Francisco in 1978. Sean Penn magnificently captures Milk’s fire and flamboyance. This really captures the flavour of those liberating times and Milk’s unfailing commitment to what everyone should have: justice, equality, and fairness. “A total triumph. Penn’s performance is phenomenal.” Rolling Stone “A masterpiece.” Red Winner of Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay Oscars.

Revolutionary Road (15) Monday 18, Tuesday 19, 7.45pm Director: Sam Mendes Starring: Kate Winslet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kathy Bates USA, 2008, 1 hour 59 mins

Prices: £12, £15, Reductions £10, £12.50, CLC £9.50, £11.50,

Kate and Leo are finally back together again in this beautifully acted dissection of a troubled marriage in suburban ‘Revolutionary Road’, where happy faces are put on lives of quiet desperation. April hates their stultifying life and dreams of reclaiming their lives (and love) as free spirits by moving to Paris. However, their incredulous neighbours react to their getaway plan as a threat to world order. Will they break away or break apart? A fantastic film about aging and the death of dreams, DiCaprio and Winslet are both absolutely compelling.

Restricted View £7, Schools £8

Nominated for three Oscars including Best Supporting Actor.

Please note: This performance will take place in the Theatre. This film does not qualify for the Special Offer.

Deaf and hard of hearing and blind and visually impaired people can now enjoy the magic of cinema at The Riverfront with subtitled and audio described screenings - just look out for the films with these logos on:

Tuesday 26, 11am* & 7.45pm, Wednesday 27, 1pm & 7.45pm Director: Franny Armstrong Starring: Pete Postlethwaite UK, 2008, 1 hour 40 minutes

A powerful, shocking, in some ways quite extraordinary documentary that carries on from where ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ left off. This takes on climate change, consumerism, and the need for massive personal and social change if we are to avert disaster. Pete Postlethwaite plays an archivist in the devastated world of the future, introducing wellchosen clips and asking the question: “Why didn’t we stop climate change when we still had the chance?”. A truly radical, thoughtprovoking film, this is simply unmissable for anyone who cares about the future of the planet, their children or grandchildren.
