Welcome / Croeso Spring 2009 at The Riverfront
The Riverfront is still only four years old, but we are beginning to feel as if parts of our programme are becoming very well established, and our pantomime becoming a real tradition. ‘Sleeping Beauty’ is running through until 3 January 2009, and at the time of writing is on track to equal last year’s 20,000 attendances. When this brochure comes out there will still be an opportunity to get tickets… so if you haven’t already got yours, don’t miss out on our glittering set and costumes, fantastic cast led by the irrepressible Brian Hibbard and some great songs. The Riverfront will kick off the new year with students from the University of Wales, Newport in the Studio while Circus of Horrors are in the Main Theatre. These will be followed by a range of high quality drama, music, dance and comedy in the performance spaces, classes in the workshops and exhibitions in the two galleries. We are delighted to be welcoming back so many very successful previous visitors, such as the Syd Lawrence Orchestra, Sinfonia Cymru, Swansea City Opera, CandoCo and Joe Brown. We’ve also got new formats for some other companies who have been before: Hijinx have brought small scale shows to our Studio in the past, but this time we have the premiere of a larger scale piece, ‘Miss Brown to You’, in the theatre; Hugh Cornwell did an excellent solo gig in the Studio, and this time returns with a full band and material from his new album as well as old favourites; Count Arthur Strong also has a new show. A fun night out, the Comedy Shed, is increasing from one night a month to two. On the last Thursday and Friday on each month you’ll be able to see three comedians while enjoying food and drink at your tables, with the Studio Theatre converted to a cabaret style layout. As ever, there is plenty to choose from, and we look forward to meeting you here – whether you have already become part of our established audience and participants or are joining us for the first time.

Apocalypse in the Asylum
Listen to the running footsteps. A killer runs. In his head the blood is drumming. A plague engulfs a city. A man searches for the truth. A family is torn apart by civil war. Welcome to the city of Thebes...
Paris, France, The late 1800’s. The back streets and opium dens are buzzing with the news that a new operetta, The Moulin Rouge; is set to open, but unlike the usual cheap dance halls in this area, this new venture was to offer a new kind of high for the flamboyant gentry of France. Side Show owner Doktor Haze had landed on French soil after fleeing his native home of Transylvania. He had sat in the opium dens and listened for weeks, as people plotted and now it was time for him to make his move, Doktor Haze was going to beat The Moulin Rouge and open his own den of iniquities. He immediately located a beautiful country retreat, however, on closer inspection, Dr Haze found that his property was not entirely empty, but full of lunatics...

University of Wales’ Newport Vista Theatre returns to The Riverfront with their stimulating and thought provoking adaptations of the greatest plays of Western drama. Sophocles’ ‘Oedipus’ explores moral and political issues that still resonate with a modern audience today, exposing the gulf between individual conscience and the needs of the state. Who are we? Where do we come from? What are we hiding? These age old questions are brought to life by Vista’s unique interpretation and performance style. Changes
Sweetness and Badness
Red Wave Dance
Welsh National Opera Max
Red Wave Dance’s most recent work by choreographer Carl Butcher creates a space in which cultures collide, taking us on a journey where values and aesthetics are challenged and examined, engaging in a process of transformation through dreams, flashbacks and future hopes.
‘Sweetness and Badness’ is a dynamic and powerful high impact performance for teenagers, exploring risk and dare, danger, adrenalin, love and jealousy.
In a contemporary setting, an international cast of dancers confront notions of love and loss, the sacred and the profane, presenting a kaleidoscopic view of an emotional and cultural landscape of shifting boundaries during an imaginary train ride to the upbeat sounds of the latest Asian fusion music.
It explores issues of exclusion, violence and personal responsibility combining poetic language, thrilling music and outstanding singing and acting.
The Elixir of Love (L’Elisir d’Amore) Swansea City Opera. By Gaetano Donizetti Co-production with Theatr Brycheiniog, Brecon and The Coliseum, Aberdare. Sung in English. Following highly successful productions of ‘The Daughter of the Regiment’ and ‘The Magic Flute’, Swansea City Opera now bring this timeless and charming comic opera to life, updating it to the 1920’s and setting it in the beautiful village of Portmeirion, North Wales. A shy young farmer loves a beautiful landowner. She possesses money, education and sophistication, he doesn’t. They’re worlds apart and his unrequited love looks like it will never be reciprocated. That is until the day a travelling salesman breezes into the village selling a magic elixir. The score is full of memorable tunes including ‘Una Furtiva Lagrima’, the aria that catapulted Pavarotti to fame.

The House of Bernada Alba
CandoCo
Presented by Theatr Peña By Federico García Lorca Translated by Gwynne Edwards
Are you feeling dangerous today? Do you want to uncover the truth behind lies and love? Have you ever wondered what makes a perfect human?
Obsessed with family honour, Bernarda Alba rules her household with an iron fist. Following the death of her second husband, she announces to her five unmarried daughters that their period of mourning will last eight years. But under the heat of the oppressive Andalusian sun, passions reach boiling point and an explosion of desire, jealousy, hatred and despair threatens to bring down ‘The House of Bernarda Alba.’ Written in 1936, ‘The House of Bernarda Alba’ deals with the human struggle between oppression and freedom, and was to be the last play written by Spain’s most famous young poet and playwright, as just two months after it was completed, he was murdered by Franco’s supporters. Theatr Peña is a gathering of some of Wales’ finest actresses, theatre practitioners and associated artists who share a passion for engaging and challenging theatre and the desire to create contemporary productions of classic plays. Miss Brown To You
Count Arthur Strong
Hijinx Theatre In association with The Riverfront By Alan Harris Directed by Gaynor Lougher
The Man Behind the Smile
Sent from the city to a small mid Wales village, Emily struggles with loneliness and prejudice. Set during World War II, ‘Miss Brown to You’ follows the plight of Emily, a young woman with Down’s Syndrome. Leaving behind her sick mother and the security of the life she knows, Emily is confronted with a new life of unknown challenges, loneliness and prejudice, particularly from the local policeman who finds her arrival a threat to his own schemes and ambitions. A strong bond develops between Emily and her cousin David but this is shattered when he goes off to fight. Emily seeks to escape; lost and afraid on the mountain she meets Stanley, a young man in hiding and desperate. Both are outsiders and alone and both have the need for a friend. But secrets are so hard to keep and Aunt Rhoda is becoming suspicious. As for Sergeant Price, he is becoming very impatient with this whole situation and will do anything to get his way.
Fresh from the continued success of his BBC Radio 4 comedy series and recent run at the 2008 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Count Arthur Strong, showbiz legend and raconteur, reminds us just what we’ve been missing since his last television series, ‘The Robin Hood Club’, was axed in 1960-something. As Arthur himself says, “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could just turn the telly on after a hard day at the abattoir... or whatever it is you do... and there I was, smiling back at you, in my own programme again, again.” “Forever the nearly man of show business and an expert mangler of words, Count Arthur is nothing less than wonderful... One of the greatest comic creations of this century, Count Arthur is compulsory viewing.” The Mirror www.komediaentertainment.com/count_arthur_strong

Private Peaceful Presented by Scamp Theatre and Poonamallee By Michael Morpurgo Adapted & Directed by Simon Reade Private Peaceful relives the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young First World War soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night he looks back at his short but joyful past growing up in rural Devon: his exciting first days at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; his adventures with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line. Winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year, Private Peaceful is by third Children’s Laureate, Michael Morpurgo. His inspiration came from a visit to Ypres where he was shocked to discover how many young soldiers were court-martialled and shot for cowardice during the First World War.

Come along to an evening of fun and laughter! A truly enjoyable show.
The London Mozart Players brings a special performance to The Riverfront. Ten musicians will perform live music to the silent film ‘The Cabinet of Dr Caligari’. Composer Lynne Plowman has written a new score to accompany this fantastic film. ‘The Cabinet of Dr Caligari’ is regarded as one of the most influential German expressionist films and also as the first true horror film. Made in 1920, it tells the tale of Dr Caligari and his sleepwalking friend Cesare, who is an attraction at a local carnival and he prophesises someone’s death. The villagers chase Dr Caligari and Cesare as they suspect their involvement with the murder. The plot twists and turns to bring the film to an unexpected end. It will make for an entertaining evening combining great music and great cinema. www.imp.org

Pentalk Lab
The Pentalk Lab... Music lovers will be pleased to know that The Riverfront’s Recording Studio is now being used regularly by musicians, producers and DJ’s with the launch of The Pentalk Lab, created by The Riverfront’s very own in-house Hip-Hop producer and scratch wizard, DJ Winchester. Winchester first got into Hip-Hop music in 1983 when he heard the Herbie Hancock classic ROCKET playing from his parent’s pub jukebox. From then on he started collecting Hip-Hop records. A few years later he bought his first set of turntables and in 1988 entered in his first ever DMC champs. He has been active on the UK Hip-Hop scene ever since, with many releases to his name and now we’re lucky enough to have him in-house at The Riverfront. He is currently working on his Winchester presentz album which so far features Hip-Hop legend Craig G, Verbal Kent, Soweto Kinch, MSI and Nomadic Poet. Although specialising in Hip-Hop, the Recording Studio has the capacity to support all musical genres.

January
Quantum of Solace (12A) Monday 19 at 7.45pm Tuesday 20, 11am* & 7.45pm Wednesday 21 at 1pm
This takes off from where ‘Casino Royale’ ended with Bond seeking revenge for the killing of Vesper Lynd, the love of his life. As he tracks down the mysterious organisation responsible for her death, Bond finds himself drawn to a slimeball tycoon, Dominic Greene, and the beautiful but vengeful Camille.
Changeling (15)
Monday 5, Tuesday 6, 7.45pm
Monday 26, Tuesday 27, 7.45pm
Director: Oliver Stone Starring: Josh Brolin, Thandie Newton, James Cromwell, Ellen Burstyn USA, 2008, 2 hours 9 minutes
Director: Clint Eastwood Starring: Angelina Jolie, John Malkovich, Jeffrey Donovan USA, 2008, 2 hours 21 minutes
Stone sees Dubya’s rise to power as a great, almost Capraesque story: how did the black sheep of his famous family rise to become Leader of the Free World? ‘W’ shifts back and forth between Bush’s partying younger years and his first term in office. Even when he transformed his life, Dubya was still desperate for his father’s approval. A terrifically entertaining tragi-comic portrait of a man driven by a simplistic view of the world that almost leaves you feeling sorry for him.
Like a good wine, Eastwood just seems to get better and better with age. This compelling thriller displays all the clear-eyed intelligence and subtle understatement we’ve come to expect from his later movies. Based on real events in L.A. in 1928, this starts with a desperate mother searching for her missing son only for him to be mysteriously returned to her a few months later. However, she soon discovers that he’s not her little boy at all... At the centre is a brilliant performance by Angelina Jolie, set against a big, bold backdrop that tackles his usual themes – justice, wrath, revenge. And there are echoes of ‘Chinatown’ and ‘L.A. Confidential’ in the way Eastwood throws in his own sharp take on the heyday of Hollywood.
Monday 12, Tuesday 13, 7.45pm Director: Barry Levinson Starring: Robert De Niro, Sean Penn, Catherine Keener, John Turturro USA, 2008, 1 hour 42 minutes
De Niro plays a successful middle-aged producer with one eye on satisfying the studio boss and one on artistic integrity as he juggles the demands of two ex-wives, preening ‘talent’, a slimy agent and other specimens from the Hollywood menagerie. The script is sharp, and the ensemble cast a treat: Bruce Willis and Sean Penn send themselves up nicely, while De Niro gives an effortlessly engaging performance at the centre of the vanity merry-go-round. Like ‘The Player’, and ‘Wag The Dog’ this affectionate kick in Tinseltown’s ribs is extremely funny.
