Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire was beautiful, glamorous and adored by the public - like her direct descendent, Princess Diana. Her beauty and charisma made her a household name, but she was stuck in a loveless marriage. Frustrated by the limitations imposed on her by virtue of her sex and her class, she scandalised the nation by becoming a political campaigner and entering into an intense ménage a trois with the beautiful Lady Foster. Couscous (Le Graine et Le Mulet) (15) Monday 10 & Tuesday 11, 7.45pm Director: Abdel Kechiche Starring: Habib Boufares, Hafsia Herzi France, 2007, 2 hours 31 minutes, subtitles

Suddenly finding himself unemployed, Slimane tries to achieve a lifelong dream of opening a restaurant and so has to overcome bureaucratic authorities, his neighbours and members of his own quarrelling family. Much, much more than a conventional tale of triumph-over-adversity, director Kechiche makes good use of a fine cast who maintain a realistic tone throughout. This affectionate portrait of a port, a community and a culture succeeds as both a damning indictment of intolerance and a fascinating, unsentimental family melodrama.

Brideshead Revisited (12A) Monday 17 & Tuesday 18, 7.45pm, Wednesday 19, 1.00pm Bring Baby Cinema* - Monday 17, 11am Director: Julian Jarold Starring: Ben Whishaw, Matthew Goode, Hayley Atwell, Emma Thompson, Michael Gambon UK, 2008, 2 hours 12 minutes

Tuesday performance only

If you can let go of your memories of Evelyn Waugh’s classic novel and the celebrated TV adaptation, this is a thoroughly enjoyable, tasteful melodrama. Certain elements of the story – of forbidden love and loss of innocence in a family of aristocratic Catholics prior to the start of World War 2 – have been ‘straightened out’. But the changes heighten the drama, sharpening the focus on inheritance, class and the lovely country estates - the wonderful Castle Howard is again the real star of the piece.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (12A) Monday 24 & Tuesday 25, 7.45pm Director: Mark Herman Starring: David Thewlis, Asa Butterfield, Vera Farmiga, Sheila Hancock UK, 2008, 1 hour 34 minutes

Tuesday performance only

When his father is made commandant of a concentration camp, eight year-old Bruno finds himself all alone, then he meets a strange boy, sat behind a wire fence, wearing pyjamas. Bruno is hungry for friendship, Schmuel is just plain hungry. But their meeting will have terrible repercussions... A powerfully affecting and unusual childs-eye view of the Holocaust.

December Burn After Reading (15) Monday & Tuesday 2, 7.45pm Directors: Joel & Ethan Coen Starring: George Clooney, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, John Malkovich, Brad Pitt USA, 2008, 1 hour 36 minutes

Tuesday performance only

Oh what fun! Guaranteed to have you in stitches, this is a hilarious and at times very silly piss-take of the sleazy spies and the climate of paranoia rife in Washington DC. When CIA analyst Osborne Cox (Malkovich) is fired he returns home to dedicate himself to writing his memoirs and drinking. When two clueless blackmailers get hold of his memoirs things turn really crazy. Like The Big Lebowski this is a farcical shaggy dog story into which are worked a series of great scenes, fabulous dialogue and fine actors having a ball. A joy to watch.

A wonderful story about the strength of women and their ability to come alive against the odds. After 15 years in prison, Juliette moves in with Lea, her younger sister who she hardly knows. Gradually, the two women learn to overcome the secrets and things left unsaid that so brutally tore them apart. With the help of Lea, her family and friends, Juliette starts the process of reconciliation and forgiveness. This features a host of superb performances - particularly from Scott Thomas.

Easy Virtue (PG) Monday 15 & Tuesday 16, 7.45pm, Wednesday 17, 1.00pm Bring Baby Cinema* - Tuesday 16, 11am Director: Stephan Elliott. Starring: Colin Firth, Jessica Biel, Kristen Scott Thomas, Ben Barnes UK, 2008, 1 hour 33 minutes

However, things start to unravel when they arrive at the family home and John’s mother Veronica instantly takes against Larita and sparks soon fly.
