Welcome / Croeso Autumn 2008 at The Riverfront
As The Riverfront approaches the Autumn of 2008, it continues to host a wide range of performances, activities and other events, and we are delighted to be able to report that in the last financial year, we exceeded 70,000 attendances at those events by a comfortable margin for the second year in succession. This autumn, we are excited about the international collaboration ‘Osez!’ which includes performances taking place outside on the quayside. 14 dancers, half from Wales and half from Quebec, will make a new dance everyday for a week. It is a unique initiative that has been running for six years in Canada and now takes place in the UK for the first time. We have also got a good range of drama, from AJTC’s adaptation of ‘On the Black Hill,’ making a welcome return, to Northern Broadsides’ ‘Accidental Death of an Anarchist’. Northern Broadsides will pay their first visit to Newport, thanks to support from the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation for a project co-ordinated by Creu Cymru that The Riverfront are part of. Ever since opening we have had ongoing support from The Arts Council of Wales, which makes much of the rest of the programme possible. Look out for hip-hop events with Rannel and Half Moon Theatre at one end of the spectrum, and Mid Wales Opera at another! Alongside 37 different professional productions, there are our weekly film screenings, workshops and classes, plus schools and community events such as the Shakespeare Schools Festival, SPARK, First Films and Newport Cathedral Choir. The autumn wraps up, as you would expect, with our fifth pantomime, ‘Sleeping Beauty’. With a great cast again, including the inimitable Brian Hibbard, we anticipate beating last year’s record of 20,000 attendances this time round. So book soon to get the best seats! There’s plenty more too, so we hope to see you soon.

Osez!
Cibler
Osez! is a remarkably successful outdoor dance project from Canada, which comes to the UK for the first time this year. Seven Canadian dancers and seven from Wales will work with choreographers Karine Ledoyen from Quebec and Sean Tuan John from Wales to create a new dance each day of the week.
Danse K par K
Performed on the quayside around The Riverfront, each day will be different, building from 20 minutes to 45 minutes of performance over the week.
Positioned half way between theatre and dance, this piece is sometimes dark, sometimes illuminating, but always performed with energy and conviction and always accessible to its audience.
Come along to see Newport in a new light, and to enjoy the fruits of this international exchange. The café and bar will be open, live music will be playing... This project is a chance for dance artists from Wales and Quebec to exchange techniques and knowledge, as well as to perform together. It has the support of Wales Arts International, Newport City Council and the Québec Government Office, London.
Cibler is the most recent work of choreographer Karine Ledoyen. Three dancers reflect on isolation and the ways in which people become together or separate.
First performed at the Grand Theatre de Québec, Cibler received excellent reviews. This is the only UK performance by Danse K par K of this piece.

While never letting his extraordinary technique overshadow the beauty of his music, the multi award winning Reed engages the entire instrument, creating a rock/jazz rhythm section, melody line and chordal accompaniment simultaneously; hauling out an orchestra you never knew was hidden inside. At full tilt, his fingers, thumbs, fists and hands at once suggest a drummer, keyboardist, bassist and several guitarists at work. The word virtuoso doesn’t even come close.
Flhip Flhop - Everything Happens on the Break Rannel Theatre Company and Makin Projects, in association with Swindon Dance and Redbridge Drama Centre Curiosity meets one-upmanship as the company’s dynamic pair - Matt Bailey and Joey D - compete to entertain each other in an attempt to forget about the monotony of every day working life. ZU2 To see U2 live is an unbeatable experience. To see ZU2 live is the next best thing. U2 are one of the biggest rock bands in the world today and has maintained a high level of popularity since the late 1980’s. With sales of approximately 50.5 million albums in the U.S. and over 150 million albums worldwide, six No 1 albums in the U.S. and nine No. 1 albums in the United Kingdom, it is no wonder that they are widely considered one of the most successful groups of all time. With this in mind it would seem impossible to emulate the unique sound of U2. Until now.
Following a training day for teacher/directors with the MAP Consortium, workshops with the UK’s National Youth Theatres and a six month journey of rehearsals, these talented young people are now ready to step into the Shakespearean spotlight…
Perspective plays the strangest tricks. When ZU2 set out they made no secret for their love of the sound of U2. As for the way they looked they clearly had thought this through too, creating a tribute which transcends all the trappings of the genre. Aside from their consummate skill as performers, it is their complete regard for U2 that has made them already Europe’s most authentic U2 tribute band.

Rhod Gilbert and the Award-Winning Mince Pie The multi award-winning Welsh Misery returns with his hilarious new show. A service station somewhere. Christmas 2007. About 2.40am. Rhod Gilbert finds himself standing in the coffee shop bit, armed with a travel pillow, a flask and a very powerful torch, aggressively demanding to know more about an “AwardWinning Mince Pie” on display on the counter. Suddenly aware of what he is doing, Rhod is forced to acknowledge that he may be having a very mild nervous breakdown. How did it come to this? He doesn’t even like mince pies. The pressures of living in a tedious, pointless and absurd world surrounded by idiots have finally taken their toll. Perhaps he should never have left his fantasy world of Llanbobl in the first place. This is the slightly ridiculous story of how one mince pie broke the camel’s back. Accidental Death of an Anarchist
First Films
By Dario Fo, presented by Northern Broadsides Directed by Conrad Nelson
Into its second year, groups of young people from all over Newport were once again given the opportunity to experience the process of filmmaking through producing and crafting their own films.
A man has “fallen” to his death from a window whilst in police custody. Accidents happen, but did he jump or was he pushed? And what is the significance of the ill-fated Mancunian Salsa dancer? Brace yourselves for an evening of riotous political farce and sparkling satire as Northern Broadsides brings you Dario Fo’s comic tour de force, ‘Accidental Death of an Anarchist.’ A brilliant expose of police corruption rooted in real events in 1960s Italy – this contemporary adaptation brings the play closer to home, to northern England, and revels in Dario Fo’s anarchic genius. Northern Broadsides exuberant cast of charismatic northern actors will unashamedly ‘big up’ the sheer lunacy of the plot whilst chillingly exposing the issues of our time…with disturbing hilarity. Think ‘Have I Got News For You’ meets ‘Life on Mars’, and be prepared for an outrageously entertaining theatre experience.

The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged) The Reduced Shakespeare Company It is apocalypse now as the three cultural guerrillas of The Reduced Shakespeare Company set their reductive sites on The Bible. Can bolts of lightning be far behind?
Hansel and Gretel Lyngo Theatre in collaboration with The Egg & Theatre Royal Bath By Marcello Chiarenza, music by Carlo Cialdo Capelli, English adaptation by Patrick Lynch Is hunger stronger than love?
Yes, it’s an affectionate, irreverent roller coaster ride from fig leaves to Final Judgment as the boys tackle the great theological questions: Did Adam and Eve have navels? Did Moses really look like Charlton Heston? And why isn’t the word ‘phonetic’ spelled the way it sounds?
It’s easier to feed two mouths than four and the poor woodsman’s empty stomach goes to his head - he gives in to his bony wife and Hansel and Gretel have to be left in the forest. Instead they follow their noses to the sugary heart of darkness...
Whether you are Catholic or Atheist, Muslim or Jew, Protestant or Purple People Eater, you will be tickled by the RSC’s romp through old time religion. Remember... Someone is watching.
Hansel and Gretel’s journey takes them from a house with empty cupboards and a mother who doesn’t like children to a house made of sweets and someone who just loves children - on toast!

SPARK
The Searchers
The beehive queen of retro pop is back this autumn.
This year’s SPARK project celebrations will draw on many art forms to showcase Newport’s young talent. Over 700 pupils will be involved in the project this year including pupils from Alway, Millbrook, Pillgwenlly, Ringland and Somerton Primary Schools and Duffryn Junior School.
John McNally, Frank Allen, Spencer James and Eddie Rothe
Mari Wilson will take listeners back to the 80’s with her renditions from The Platinum Collection, featuring a selection of her hits that was released in September. Stunning the music scene in the early 80’s with her skyscraper hairdo and her 12 piece band The Wilsations, Mari Wilson had a series of catchy iconic hits, such as ‘Cry Me a River’ and ‘Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps’. See her live and in person at this gig as she turns back the clock to the glory days of soul.
SPARK is Provident Financial’s flagship education programme taking place across the UK and Republic of Ireland. Of the eight theatres involved, The Riverfront is the only theatre in Wales taking part in the project.
With such classic hits as ‘Sweets For My Sweet’; ‘Needles and Pins’; ‘Don’t Throw Your Love Away’ and ‘When You Walk In The Room’, The Searchers have contributed enormously to the British music industry, with record sales well in excess of 30 million. No doubt the decade that gave us The Beatles and The Searchers was unique and pervades all cultural and age barriers today. They have devised a special solo concert for UK touring, which is highly entertaining and which has been enthusiastically and warmly received. Their fully self-contained two and a half hour concert includes all their famous hits, plus many of their original album recordings, B-sides and a selection of other collector favourites.

Edmond Rostond’s play Cyrano De Bergerac was a dramatic sensation when it was first performed on the French stage in 1897. Over a century later, Theatr na n’Og, in this specially commissioned version of the tale from Keiron Self, takes you back to a time of honour and chivalry.

Rob Brydon Following on from his ‘Identity Crisis’ documentary, the multi-award winning star of ‘Marion & Geoff’, ‘Human Remains’, ‘Director’s Commentary’, ‘The Keith Barrett Show’, ‘Supernova’, ‘Rob Brydon’s Annually Retentive’, ‘A Cock and Bull Story’, ‘I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue’, ‘Q.I.’, ‘The Big Fat Quiz of The Year’, ‘Little Britain’ and ‘Gavin and Stacey’ returns to Wales for an evening of stand up comedy.
The Man of Mode (or, Sir Fopling Flutter) Vista Theatre presents The Man of Mode (or Sir Fopling Flutter) is possibly the most outrageous, witty and thought-provoking comedy of Restoration Theatre. The play holds up a mirror to a libertarian society obsessed with fashion, promiscuity, sex and celebrity. Rather like today! This production mischievously makes the connections as it drifts from the world of Charles II into the 21st Century. Using the original text, and drawing on both Restoration and modern conventions of behaviour and gesture, the production questions whether there can be any truth in love when we are obsessed with sensuality and appearance.

Pantomime / Pantomeim
A sparkling story of a princess who sleeps for a hundred years... All is not well in the medieval court of King Dafydd and Queen Myfanwy when the evil magician Morgan the Bad isn’t invited to the christening of the beautiful baby Princess Rose. Determined to get his revenge, he casts a spell declaring she will die on her 18th birthday by pricking her finger on a cursed spinning wheel. However, good Fairy Blodwen is having none of this but the best her magic powers can do is to make Princess Rose fall into a deep, deep sleep for a hundred years. Enter our wonderful, wacky comedy characters of Nanny Thoroughgood, Muddles the Genial Jester and the lusty Prince Cedric Lostalot...and so begins a medley of madcap mayhem in the fight of good against evil. But who will save the day and will our very own Sleeping Beauty wake to live happily ever after? Once again The Riverfront joins with The Hiss & Boo Company to bring back the unrivalled pantomime team that brought you last year’s hilarious ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and the unforgettable ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Dick Whittington’ pantomimes. And of course Brian Hibbard, the one you love to hate, is back leading a strong company featuring several familiar Welsh faces. Can the irrepressible Brian Hibbard as Morgan the Bad be even more evil than last year? – OH YES HE CAN! – Will our Fairy Blodwen (Gillian Elisa) conjure up the most powerful of spells? Will our Princess (Jacquelyn Kent) be as beautiful as in every fairy tale? – OH YES THEY WILL! Can Prince Cedric Lostalot (Michael Luxton) be as handsome in the flesh? – OH YES HE WILL! Can Muddles (Andrew Beavis) be as silly as his name sounds? – Will his Mum, that dimpled dumpling of a delicious Dame, (Phylip Harries) be as outrageous as ever? – YOU BET! Will lots of lively local lads and lasses sing and dance their hearts out? – OH YES THEY WILL!

Metamorphosis ‘Transforming Life into Art’
Serialist Art Collective This new exhibition of twelve works by the Serialist Art Collective is based on the idea of change. It is a series of paintings which unfolds like a game of Chinese Whispers. Abstract and often surreal, this is a visual epic story, inspired by the tales of the same name by Franz Kafka and Ovid. It reflects the transformations a modern society undergoes. Change is all around us - how we live, what we wear, how we travel, what we eat, our environment, the climate etc. We embrace this and try to influence it by being the change we want to see. We believe in transforming life into art and express this in ‘Metamorphosis’.
2 Aug - 17 Sept, Art Gallery
Ghosts in Armour ‘Follow me, I’m right behind you’ Stephanie Roberts & Dan Romer Follow me, I’m right behind you, familiar but contradictory words reflecting the relationship between industry and nature, masculinity and femininity and the chaos and harmony that encircle our lives. Dan Romer revels in the organic chaos of the city through screen and digital prints, while Stephanie Roberts manages to find beauty in the nooks and crannies of Newport through mosaic and ceramic art.
27 Sept - 25 Oct, Art Gallery
‘Ghosts in Armour’ is a multi-disciplinary artistic response to a space, a time and a declining Welsh industry. Centred around a former Steelworks site in Newport the exhibition explores concepts of family, abandonment, loss and ultimately rebirth of both an industrial location and its associated community. Presented by Punctum Photographic and supported by The Riverfront and CORUS. Curated by Matt Wright & Janire Najera.

Music lovers will be pleased to know that The Riverfront’s Recording Studio is now being used regularly by musicians, producers and DJ’s with the launch of The Pentalk Lab, created by The Riverfront’s very own in-house Hip-Hop producer and scratch wizard, DJ Winchester. Winchester first got into Hip-Hop music in 1983 when he heard the Herbie Hancock classic ROCKET playing from his parent’s pub jukebox. From then on he started collecting Hip-Hop records. A few years later he bought his first set of turntables and in 1988 entered in his first ever DMC champs. He has been active on the UK Hip-Hop scene ever since, with many releases to his name and now we’re lucky enough to have him in-house at The Riverfront. He is currently working on his Winchester presentz album which so far features Hip-Hop legend Craig G, Verbal Kent, Soweto Kinch, MSI and Nomadic Poet. Although specialising in Hip-Hop, the Recording Studio has the capacity to support all musical genres.
