Martin Stephenson Leader/songwriter with the Daintees, Martin’s musical education came from Ray Manzerac’s piano in The Doors, Jim Morrison and Patti Smith, John Cooper Clarke and Jonathan Richman. These were the foundation of Stephenson’s eclectic music education, paid for not by the state, but by busking to escape the Workhouse. Martin evolved into an unusual songwriter in the early 80’s, writing idiosyncratic flavours way beyond his years. Making his name more as a strong performer and anti-industry bard, relating more to outsiders than the fame hungry. Releasing four critically acclaimed albums between the years 85/92, he continues to plough his own furrow living in the Highlands of Scotland, releasing over 20 albums and performing concerts throughout the UK. www.daintees.com

The Trojan Women
The Pearl Fishers
Sylvia Anderson
Theatr Peña
By Georges Bizet, Swansea City Opera
Following the success of their first production - Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba – Theatr Peña return to The Riverfront with Brendan Kennelly’s The Trojan Women by Euripides.
A fishing village in ancient Ceylon (Sri Lanka) is the setting for Bizet’s steamy tale of a tautly woven friendship, loyalty and forbidden love. The brave fishermen, Zurga and Nadir, recall a pact they made not to pursue Leila; a woman for whom both had developed a deep affection. When a veiled virgin arrives to pray for the fisherman on their upcoming expedition, the real pearl remains hidden - her true identity. When Leila finally reveals herself, she pits the old friends against each other in a deadly love-triangle. This Swansea City Opera production is a visual, dramatic spectacle and a torrent of passion, loyalty and tension.

The Overtures
I, Julian Clary, have done for mincing what Michael Flatley did for Irish dancing.
The story of a band that encapsulates the world outside with songs, film and extreme dances of love and loathing. The transient and turbulent relationships, trashed instruments, bloody noses and drunken reconciliations are witnessed as they struggle to make sense of their world.
The Sixties were without doubt the most dynamic and innovative of decades, and their impact upon society is still being felt even now. The huge changes in music, fashion and culture which the Sixties brought about have left an indelible mark on the world, one which will probably never be equalled. Many of the creators and innovators of the Sixties were, of course, British, a fact of which we can all be proud, so in recognition of such everlasting achievements, The Overtures have devised a special concert. This show is packed with great music from all the classic artists of the decade, and is backdropped by fantastic visual footage, including archive material from each town and city hosting the show. Add in some guest appearances, some fab 60’s costumes and, of course, The Overtures’ own inimitable performance, and you’ve got a show which is sure to delight audiences of all ages. www.thebootlegsixties.com
But has the bottom fallen out of the homosexual meat market? I must tour my kingdom to find out... In these difficult times I feel I should go and comfort my people in the provinces. My friend Damien tells me the men are very hard up in Sheffield. I only hope I’m not too late. I’m 50. The shame of it. This will be an intimate evening – a celebration, no less, of my 25 years in the camp spotlight: how I got there and why I refuse to leave.
This 20th anniversary production follows a band on tour, living in a surreal world removed from the reality of life. Transporting you on an emotional ride, it takes you from the exciting to the ridiculous and the comical to the poignant. www.thisisgig.com

Steve never fails to surprise and engage audiences with his hybrid of bizarre stories, larger than life physicality, spontaneous improvisation and skewered view of everyday life.

Celebrating the beauty and versatility of the harp music of Colombia and Cymru, this extraordinarily vibrant and popular project returns to Wales following the ecstatic response to two sell-out shows in 2009 and Cimarron’s triumphant set at WOMAD festival. From the cattle-rearing plains of rural Colombia on the Orinoco delta, Cimarron make wild, untamed joropo music that preserves the spirit of freedom found in one of the world’s most untouched regions. Rooted in a deep peasant tradition defined by the mestizo mixed heritage of African, Spanish and indigenous cultures and led by harpist and composer Carlos Rojas, harp, bandola, cuatro, maracas, bass and cajon hammer out rippling melodies and mesmerizing rhythms with jaw-dropping speed and passion. Since Catrin first met Cimarron in Caernarfon in 2007 to exchange traditional Welsh and Colombian tunes, their captivating musical chemistry has brought audiences across the country to their feet! Described as “The Queen of Harps”, Catrin has delighted audiences with her performances in the UK and worldwide. Her versatility in different musical genres is demonstrated in her many recordings, which range from solo classical recitals and concertos, through to an eclectic cross-over mix and her own 14 piece band ‘CF47’. www.catrinfinch.com

Celebrity Classical Concert Series 2010
*Not Quite Right - Acronym formally used in medical records to describe unexplained difference. New work by Lost Dog choreographer and dancer Ben Duke. “To tell you the story of my life, or at least what happened to me yesterday, I’ll need a large stage, twenty four lights, some of my neighbour’s music, about ten dancers and a microphone. You watch. I’m fascinating.” Scottish Dance Theatre (SDT) is Scotland’s national contemporary dance company and is part of Dundee Rep Theatre. It’s programme includes work by Artistic Director, Janet Smith, as well as by internationally celebrated and emerging choreographers.
Trio Sfera brings together three established Amsterdam chamber music players. Eva Stegemann a member of Combattimento Consort Amsterdam and Director of a leading Chamber Music Festival in the Hague, Erik de Witt who has played principal cello in the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the European Union Chamber Orchestra and pianist Shuann Chai who has given recitals across Europe in the USA, the UK and in China. A Brush with Light screening
A Brush with Light Symposium
Finzi Quartet
A Brush with Light will showcase collaborative work between the University of Wales, Newport and partner institutions in Brazil. This will include collaborative films - many screened for the first time as well as community based photographic projects from Newport and South America. As part of A Brush with Light, there will be a programme of artist’s talks and presentations. These aim to set the exhibited works in context, and provide an invaluable opportunity to hear artists and other practitioners from both Wales and Brazil explaining their creative responses to the environments and communities around them.
The Brush with Light symposium will be a one day event that will explore and reflect upon the divergence in practice that many photographic practitioners now readily employ. This will be an opportunity to draw out themes and emerging contexts that have defined the art-form in the last decade or so - particularly within areas of trans-disciplinary practice. As part of A Brush with Light, there will be a programme of artist’s talks and presentations. These aim to set the exhibited works in context, and provide an invaluable opportunity to hear artists and other practitioners from both Wales and Brazil explaining their creative responses to the environments and communities around them.
Celebrity Classical Concert Series 2010 The Finzi Quartet formed at the Royal Northern College of Music. The Quartet have participated in masterclasses with the Endellion Quartet and Gabor Takacs-Nagyand in 2008 and were selected for the International Musicians Seminar in Prussia Cove. The Finzi Quartet has benefited the Alban Berg Quartett at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, and are currently studying at the Instituto Internacional de Música de Cámara de Madrid. They are laureates of this year’s 31st London International String Quartet and have given numerous recitals throughout the United Kingdom. The Quartet was recently selected for the Tillett Trust’s Young Artists’ Platform 2009. An Evening with... Peter Karrie & Friends
Ruby Wax - Losing it?
Peter Karrie (Phantom of the Opera star) will make his first ever appearance at The Riverfront, with his hugely popular... An Evening With... Peter Karrie & Friends. The show features the many different roles that Peter has performed throughout his long career at the top of the World’s musical theatre tree. It is an evening full of amusing anecdotes, of great theatrical solos, of informal conversations and gentle audience repartee. The show will also feature famous duets with both his leading lady, the multi talented Kate Quinnell and his ‘Live & Dangerous’ BBC Wales accompanist John Quirk. Should anyone like to share a celebration or would like to dedicate a song for someone special then please let The Riverfront Box Office know on the night. www.peterkarrie.com
Ruby Wax and acclaimed musician Judith Owen combine their talents in a new show for one night only, prior to the West End. Ruby had it all - career, dream house, husband, kids - but people soon realised something was wrong when she painted her house the same colour ‘beige’ for the 47th time! There was only one thing for it - send her to the Priory! Told with wit, humour and a lot of heart, this is Ruby at her belting best - when she’s losing it!
